  1. Chapter 9, starting at verse 30. If you are looking at one of the Pew Bibles, that is page 845.

  2. So, you can turn there if you want to follow along, or I think it will also be up on the screen.

  3. Do whichever one works best for you.

  4. So, let me begin by reading the passage, and then I'll give some teaching on it, and then we'll have a song of reflection, and then there's going to be a time of open question and answer.

  5. So, if you have questions along the way, feel free to jot those down or keep them in mind, because you'll have a chance to ask them, and we can interact over them at the end.

  6. All right, Mark chapter 9, beginning at verse 30.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  7. It says,

  8. And they came to Capernaum.

  9. And when he was in the house, he asked them,

  10. What were you discussing on the way?

  11. But they kept silent.

  12. For on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.

  13. And he sat down and called the twelve.

  14. And he said to them,

  15. If anyone would be first, he must be last of all, and servant of all.

  16. And he took a child and put him in the midst of them.

  17. And taking him in his arms, he said to them,

  18. Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.

  19. And whoever receives me receives not me, but him who sent me.

  20. John said to him,

  21. Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name,

  22. and we tried to stop him because he was not following us.

  23. But Jesus said,

  24. Do not stop him.

  25. For no one who does a mighty work in my name

  26. will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me.

  27. For the one who is not against us is for us.

  28. For truly I say to you,

  29. Whoever gives you a cup of water to drink

  30. because you belong to Christ

  31. will by no means lose his reward.

  32. Whoever causes one of these little ones

  33. who believe in me to sin.

  34. It would be better for him

  35. if a great millstone were hung around his neck

  36. and he were thrown in the sea.

  37. And if your hand causes you to sin,

  38. cut it off.

  39. It is better for you to enter life crippled

  40. than with two hands to go to hell,

  41. to the unquenchable fire.

  42. And if your foot causes you to sin,

  43. cut it off.

  44. It is better for you to enter life lame

  45. than with two feet to be thrown into hell.

  46. And if your eye causes you to sin,

  47. tear it out.

  48. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God

  49. with one eye

  50. than with two eyes to be thrown into hell

  51. where their worm does not die

  52. and the fire is not quenched.

  53. For everyone will be salted with fire.

  54. Salt is good,

  55. but if the salt has lost its saltiness,

  56. how will you make it salty again?

  57. Have salt in yourselves

  58. and be at peace with one another.

  59. Let's pray together.

  60. Amen.

  61. Lord, high and holy,

  62. meek and lowly,

  63. let me learn that the way down

  64. is the way up,

  65. that to be low

  66. is to be high,

  67. that the broken heart

  68. is the healed heart,

  69. that to bear the cross

  70. is to wear the crown.

  71. Let me find your light

  72. in my darkness,

  73. your life

  74. in my death,

  75. your joy

  76. in my sorrow,

  77. your grace

  78. in my sin,

  79. your riches

  80. in my poverty,

  81. your glory

  82. in my valley.

  83. Amen.

  84. So how would you define

  85. your life purpose?

  86. If you go online,

  87. you can find several websites

  88. devoted to helping you craft

  89. your very own life purpose statement

  90. or personal mission statement

  91. in 20 minutes or less,

  92. summarizing what you're all about

  93. and what success looks like to you.

  94. I won't ask you to raise your hand

  95. if you have one of these statements,

  96. but one website lists 15 questions

  97. that you should ask

  98. to craft one of these purpose statements

  99. or mission statements,

  100. including these.

  101. Number one,

  102. what makes you smile?

  103. Number two,

  104. what makes you feel great about yourself?

  105. Number three,

  106. what are you naturally good at?

  107. Number four,

  108. what do people ask you for help in?

  109. Number five,

  110. what are your deepest values?

  111. Number six,

  112. imagine you're 90 years old

  113. looking back over your life.

  114. What memories or accomplishments

  115. will matter most to you.

  116. I won't go through all 15,

  117. but you get the idea.

  118. Now,

  119. here are a few examples

  120. of personal mission statements

  121. that people have posted.

  122. Number one,

  123. my mission is to create,

  124. nurture,

  125. and maintain

  126. an environment of growth,

  127. challenge,

  128. and unlimited potential

  129. for all those around me.

  130. Second one,

  131. my purpose in life

  132. is to be a mom,

  133. to empower independence,

  134. self-reliance,

  135. and confidence in others

  136. through being a positive,

  137. supportive role model.

  138. Third,

  139. what matters most

  140. is my connection with myself,

  141. being present

  142. and feeling blissful.

  143. Now,

  144. at the beginning of this passage,

  145. Jesus

  146. gives his disciples

  147. something like

  148. a personal mission statement

  149. in verse 31.

  150. And it goes like this.

  151. He says,

  152. the Son of Man

  153. is going to be delivered

  154. into the hands of men

  155. and they will kill him.

  156. And when he is killed,

  157. after three days,

  158. he will rise.

  159. Now,

  160. by almost any standard,

  161. that's a really weird

  162. personal mission statement

  163. or life purpose statement

  164. for two reasons,

  165. really.

  166. First,

  167. Jesus defines himself

  168. in a very odd way.

  169. He refers to himself

  170. as the Son of Man.

  171. Not just a Son of Man,

  172. but the Son of Man.

  173. In other words,

  174. it's like somebody

  175. identified themselves

  176. and said,

  177. I am the human being.

  178. I am the perfect expression

  179. of true humanity

  180. as God always intended it to be.

  181. I am the perfect expression

  182. of bearing the image of God

  183. and ruling over the earth.

  184. I am the human being.

  185. destined to rule

  186. over the world.

  187. And you think,

  188. boy,

  189. that's a little unusual way

  190. to describe yourself.

  191. But then he says,

  192. I'll be handed over

  193. to human beings

  194. and killed by them.

  195. And my purpose in life

  196. will be achieved

  197. through my suffering

  198. and through my death.

  199. Now,

  200. this isn't the only time

  201. Jesus said something like this.

  202. He already said this

  203. if you look back

  204. in chapter 8,

  205. verse 31 and 32.

  206. It says,

  207. He began to teach

  208. his disciples

  209. that the Son of Man

  210. must suffer

  211. and be rejected

  212. and killed

  213. and after three days

  214. rise again.

  215. In other words,

  216. this isn't just an accident,

  217. a bad accident

  218. that's going to happen

  219. to him.

  220. He says,

  221. I must do this.

  222. In other words,

  223. this is part of

  224. my divinely ordained destiny.

  225. This is the way

  226. I will fulfill

  227. my God-appointed mission

  228. through suffering

  229. and death

  230. and then rising again.

  231. I mean,

  232. just think of it.

  233. How would you react

  234. if your best friend

  235. said to you,

  236. I'm the perfect expression

  237. of humanity

  238. and I'm going to fulfill

  239. my purpose in life

  240. by being handed over

  241. to people

  242. unjustly accused

  243. suffering and dying

  244. and only through that

  245. fulfilling my purpose

  246. in life.

  247. Well,

  248. verse 32 says

  249. the disciples

  250. didn't get it either.

  251. Right?

  252. You sort of think,

  253. are you making a bad joke?

  254. Are you having a bad day?

  255. Like,

  256. what's going on?

  257. See,

  258. the disciples,

  259. they were starting

  260. to get this idea

  261. that Jesus is the Messiah.

  262. Peter had said it

  263. back in chapter 8

  264. in the last chapter

  265. and they liked that idea.

  266. He was the king.

  267. He was going to

  268. rule the world

  269. and bring them

  270. with him to glory

  271. and bring them

  272. to victory.

  273. It's like

  274. getting a star player

  275. joining your team

  276. and you think,

  277. we're going to win

  278. the championship this year

  279. because we've got

  280. the star player.

  281. And then he says,

  282. I'm going to totally lose it.

  283. I'm going to lose it all.

  284. And you think,

  285. what?

  286. The other thing

  287. Jesus says

  288. is not only

  289. is this

  290. his personal mission,

  291. but he says,

  292. if you follow me,

  293. my mission

  294. becomes yours.

  295. Your mission

  296. or my mission

  297. shapes yours.

  298. That's really

  299. what this whole passage

  300. tonight is about.

  301. How Jesus'

  302. mission on earth,

  303. in particular,

  304. his mission

  305. to suffer and die

  306. and then rise again,

  307. how that shapes

  308. our mission

  309. and our lives

  310. if we follow him.

  311. In other words,

  312. if we follow Jesus,

  313. our personal mission

  314. becomes replaced

  315. with his mission

  316. for us

  317. and his purpose

  318. for us.

  319. And instead of being

  320. defined by

  321. what makes me smile

  322. or what I'm good at

  323. or what I like

  324. or what I envision

  325. for my future,

  326. we become defined by

  327. how Jesus sees us

  328. and what he has

  329. in store for us.

  330. Instead of being

  331. self-centered

  332. and self-defined,

  333. we become

  334. self-sacrificially

  335. identified with Jesus.

  336. That's the main theme

  337. that we'll see

  338. running through this passage

  339. is that

  340. the cross of Jesus

  341. makes us

  342. self-sacrificial

  343. instead of self-centered.

  344. And the passage

  345. fleshes out

  346. what that looks like

  347. in three specific areas.

  348. So first,

  349. verse 33 to 37.

  350. And in these verses,

  351. we see that

  352. instead of seeking

  353. to be the greatest,

  354. we seek to serve people

  355. who are the least.

  356. You know,

  357. it's very natural

  358. for us to define ourselves

  359. by comparing ourselves

  360. to somebody else

  361. and by seeking

  362. to be great

  363. in comparison

  364. to others.

  365. Maybe that's

  366. what motivates you

  367. to study every day

  368. and to pull all-nighters

  369. is because you want

  370. to get a certain

  371. class rank

  372. so that when you graduate,

  373. you can have

  374. a certain GPA

  375. on your resume

  376. and then you'll have

  377. a better chance

  378. than others

  379. who have a lower GPA

  380. to get the job

  381. that you want.

  382. Or maybe that's

  383. what motivates you

  384. to work

  385. because you want

  386. to advance

  387. to a certain level

  388. in your career field

  389. and you know

  390. that to get there,

  391. you're going to have

  392. to surpass everybody else.

  393. And so you work hard,

  394. you're motivated

  395. by this desire

  396. to excel

  397. compared to

  398. the norm,

  399. compared to

  400. everyone else

  401. around you.

  402. Maybe that's why

  403. you play sports

  404. or play music

  405. or exercise

  406. or diet

  407. or all kinds

  408. of things.

  409. We want to

  410. feel better

  411. about ourselves

  412. because

  413. we pursue

  414. some kind

  415. of greatness

  416. and we define

  417. that greatness

  418. in comparison

  419. to others.

  420. Now maybe you feel

  421. satisfied because

  422. you've achieved

  423. a certain level

  424. of excellence

  425. and you feel

  426. gratified by that.

  427. Maybe you feel

  428. discouraged.

  429. Maybe every day

  430. you wake up

  431. and you know

  432. you haven't made it

  433. and you look around

  434. at everybody else

  435. and everybody else

  436. seems really successful

  437. and you feel

  438. like a failure.

  439. See, both of those

  440. ways we're defining

  441. ourselves in comparison

  442. to other people

  443. around us.

  444. Now the disciples,

  445. they were the

  446. ambitious types.

  447. They were arguing

  448. about who was

  449. the greatest.

  450. They were ashamed

  451. to admit it

  452. when Jesus asked them.

  453. Jesus says,

  454. what were you

  455. talking about?

  456. They all sort of

  457. look at one another.

  458. I'm not telling.

  459. I'm not telling.

  460. I'm not telling.

  461. But Jesus knows

  462. he had heard them.

  463. Right?

  464. So he says,

  465. if you want to be first,

  466. if you want to be

  467. the greatest,

  468. you have to be the last.

  469. You have to be

  470. the servant of all.

  471. He says,

  472. if you want an example

  473. of what that looks like,

  474. think about what it means

  475. to receive a child.

  476. Now if you're a parent

  477. or if you've been

  478. around parents a lot,

  479. you know that

  480. receiving a child

  481. into your life

  482. does not make

  483. your life easier.

  484. It will not help you

  485. advance faster

  486. along your career path.

  487. It will not give you

  488. more free time

  489. to pursue your hobbies

  490. and hang out

  491. with your friends.

  492. A child will slow you down

  493. and interrupt your plans

  494. and make your life a mess.

  495. And make your house a mess.

  496. And make your sleep patterns

  497. a mess.

  498. There's no such thing

  499. as sleeping peacefully

  500. through the night

  501. with a baby

  502. in your house.

  503. Or sleeping in

  504. on a Saturday morning

  505. with toddlers.

  506. Right?

  507. There's no such thing

  508. as a quiet,

  509. leisurely dinner.

  510. When you receive

  511. a child into your family,

  512. whether by birth

  513. or adoption,

  514. your life isn't

  515. your own anymore.

  516. It's not just

  517. you and your spouse.

  518. Right?

  519. It's not just you.

  520. If your kid gets sick,

  521. you have to take care of them.

  522. And half the time

  523. you get sick too

  524. because you're around them

  525. so much.

  526. Every winter

  527. you get sick a lot more

  528. than you used to.

  529. Right?

  530. If your kid grows up,

  531. if they need clothes,

  532. if they need school supplies,

  533. I could go on and on.

  534. Right?

  535. Children are helpless

  536. and needy

  537. and they make a mess

  538. all the time.

  539. And Jesus says

  540. true greatness

  541. looks like

  542. receiving someone

  543. into your life

  544. who's helpless

  545. and needy

  546. and makes a mess

  547. all the time.

  548. And not just

  549. serving them

  550. grudgingly

  551. from a distance,

  552. but welcoming them.

  553. That's what that word

  554. receives means.

  555. To welcome them,

  556. to embrace them

  557. self-sacrificially.

  558. To love them.

  559. Now maybe,

  560. you know,

  561. this could look like

  562. if you're married,

  563. having a child.

  564. Or if you have a child

  565. seeking to be

  566. the parent,

  567. as much,

  568. as involved in your life,

  569. in their life as you can.

  570. And caring for them.

  571. And seeking to love them.

  572. And making the sacrifices

  573. necessary

  574. in whatever situation

  575. you're in

  576. to seek to raise them

  577. as well as you can.

  578. Even if it holds you back

  579. in other ways.

  580. Or if you're single,

  581. or if you're not at a point

  582. where you're having children,

  583. it might mean

  584. taking someone else

  585. into your home

  586. who needs a place to stay.

  587. Or meeting up with someone

  588. once a week

  589. who needs help.

  590. It could look

  591. all different ways.

  592. But Jesus,

  593. but when you think about it,

  594. this is why

  595. Jesus came into the world.

  596. He says,

  597. I came to be

  598. the servant of all.

  599. I came to receive you

  600. as my children.

  601. As my brothers and sisters.

  602. As children of God the Father.

  603. Jesus was the greatest,

  604. but he didn't come

  605. into the world

  606. to gain greatness

  607. in comparison to others.

  608. He came to humble himself

  609. to the point of death

  610. on a cross as a servant.

  611. So that he could welcome us

  612. into his family.

  613. I mean, think of it this way.

  614. Jesus had the Father

  615. and the Holy Spirit

  616. from all eternity.

  617. He was the Son.

  618. He had the perfect family.

  619. If you want to think

  620. about it that way,

  621. nothing ever came between

  622. the Father,

  623. the Son,

  624. and the Holy Spirit.

  625. They were united

  626. in perfect love.

  627. They perfectly understood

  628. one another.

  629. They carried out their plans

  630. in perfect harmony.

  631. They ruled over

  632. the whole universe.

  633. Unlimited in power

  634. and glory.

  635. They were completely

  636. satisfied in one another.

  637. They didn't need anybody

  638. outside of them.

  639. They had everything

  640. that they could ever desire.

  641. All the glory

  642. was contained in them.

  643. But for some

  644. unfathomable reason

  645. that I still don't understand,

  646. the Father,

  647. Son,

  648. and Holy Spirit

  649. chose to create

  650. beings

  651. outside themselves.

  652. And then when

  653. they had created us,

  654. they saw us.

  655. They saw the human race

  656. after we had rebelled

  657. against God.

  658. Creatures,

  659. right?

  660. What do you see

  661. when you look around

  662. at the human race?

  663. Creatures who are not only

  664. weak and helpless,

  665. but also rebellious

  666. and proud

  667. and jealous

  668. and divisive.

  669. Compared to God,

  670. we have nothing to add

  671. to Him.

  672. We don't bring Him

  673. anything that He

  674. didn't have already.

  675. We don't add anything

  676. to His life,

  677. to His glory,

  678. to His satisfaction.

  679. But the message

  680. of the Bible

  681. is that the Father

  682. and the Son

  683. and the Holy Spirit,

  684. God Himself

  685. chose

  686. to reach out to us

  687. and bring us

  688. into

  689. His fellowship.

  690. And that Jesus Christ,

  691. the eternal Son of God,

  692. said,

  693. I am going to share

  694. my glory

  695. and my righteousness

  696. and my status

  697. and my honor

  698. with these people

  699. so that they too

  700. can be called

  701. sons and daughters

  702. of God.

  703. And I'll pay

  704. whatever price

  705. it takes

  706. to bring them in

  707. and adopt them

  708. and keep them

  709. all the way

  710. to the end,

  711. even if that price

  712. is me

  713. being rejected

  714. and killed by them.

  715. You see,

  716. that's why

  717. Jesus had to come

  718. and suffer and die.

  719. is to pay the price

  720. to bring us home

  721. with Him.

  722. You see,

  723. Jesus is the greatest,

  724. but He displayed

  725. His greatness

  726. by becoming

  727. the last of all

  728. and the servant of all,

  729. by receiving

  730. and welcoming us

  731. when we had nothing

  732. to offer Him

  733. at great cost

  734. to Himself,

  735. at a great sacrifice

  736. to Himself.

  737. But He did it

  738. with great,

  739. for He considered

  740. it a joy

  741. to receive us.

  742. So Jesus says,

  743. instead of seeking

  744. to be the greatest,

  745. if you follow Me,

  746. seek to love people

  747. who are the least,

  748. since I've loved you

  749. and welcomed you.

  750. So that's the first contrast.

  751. The second one

  752. is in verse 38

  753. through 41.

  754. And I'd summarize it

  755. this way.

  756. Instead of assuming

  757. that God's kingdom

  758. is centered around

  759. us,

  760. we seek to encourage

  761. anyone else

  762. who is centered

  763. around Jesus.

  764. So John says,

  765. Teacher,

  766. we saw someone

  767. casting out demons

  768. in your name

  769. and we tried

  770. to stop him

  771. because he wasn't

  772. following us.

  773. Now,

  774. there are several

  775. ironic things

  776. about this statement.

  777. First,

  778. if you were here

  779. last week,

  780. or if you look

  781. in verse 14

  782. through 29

  783. of this chapter,

  784. Jesus' disciples

  785. just failed

  786. to cast out a demon.

  787. So,

  788. they're trying

  789. to stop someone else

  790. from doing

  791. what they just

  792. failed to do.

  793. Second,

  794. they want these people

  795. who are doing

  796. what they can't

  797. to follow them

  798. and get behind them.

  799. Third,

  800. it says,

  801. we tried to stop him,

  802. which implies

  803. we tried

  804. and we failed.

  805. They weren't able

  806. to stop him

  807. even though

  808. they tried.

  809. When you think

  810. of it,

  811. this is a very

  812. foolish statement.

  813. Now,

  814. why did they say,

  815. why did John say

  816. something so foolish?

  817. Why do we say things

  818. that are sometimes

  819. very foolish?

  820. The problem was,

  821. the disciples saw

  822. doing mighty works

  823. in Jesus' name

  824. as a mark

  825. of their own greatness.

  826. And they didn't want

  827. to share their greatness

  828. with anybody else.

  829. They thought

  830. the kingdom of God

  831. revolves around us.

  832. And as a result,

  833. they ended up

  834. saying and doing

  835. some pretty foolish things.

  836. And you know,

  837. we can fall into

  838. the same trap.

  839. Things like envy

  840. or jealousy

  841. or pride

  842. or divisiveness

  843. can be just as much

  844. of a problem

  845. for us.

  846. We can fall into

  847. the trap of thinking

  848. the kingdom of God

  849. depends on me

  850. or it depends on

  851. my church

  852. and nobody else.

  853. Now,

  854. this can be a

  855. particular temptation

  856. for church leaders

  857. and ministry leaders.

  858. So,

  859. if you're thinking

  860. of going into

  861. full-time Christian ministry

  862. or becoming a leader

  863. in the church,

  864. beware.

  865. Because I can guarantee

  866. you,

  867. you will face

  868. this temptation.

  869. Sometimes we want

  870. to judge our success

  871. by how much

  872. our church

  873. or our ministry

  874. is growing.

  875. And we don't think

  876. about how are we

  877. contributing

  878. to the work

  879. of God's kingdom

  880. more broadly.

  881. So,

  882. example.

  883. You hear through

  884. the grapevine

  885. that someone is

  886. starting a new church

  887. in town.

  888. What is our,

  889. what is the immediate

  890. reaction?

  891. Suspicion.

  892. Right?

  893. They must be trying

  894. to compete with us.

  895. They must not recognize

  896. the good ministry

  897. that we're already doing.

  898. They must be

  899. naive and foolish

  900. outsiders.

  901. Maybe their ministry

  902. will fail.

  903. Maybe it should fail.

  904. They didn't bother

  905. to reach out to us,

  906. so we shouldn't bother

  907. to reach out to them.

  908. Or maybe,

  909. on the other hand,

  910. maybe you're the one

  911. wanting to start

  912. a new ministry

  913. or plant a new church

  914. or go to a new area

  915. and you think,

  916. God is going to use me

  917. to save

  918. this city,

  919. to change

  920. the world.

  921. But,

  922. do you take the time

  923. to do research

  924. beforehand

  925. to see,

  926. what is God

  927. already doing?

  928. Who are the people

  929. that God's already using?

  930. What are the ministries

  931. or churches

  932. that are already here

  933. that are teaching

  934. the truth about Jesus?

  935. How can we

  936. work together

  937. and come alongside

  938. one another?

  939. You see,

  940. whichever side you're on,

  941. we can fall into this trap

  942. or on an individual level.

  943. Sometimes we can be

  944. very focused on

  945. how is God

  946. using me?

  947. I want to use

  948. my gifts.

  949. We think,

  950. if I'm not using

  951. all my gifts,

  952. then

  953. my church

  954. must be wrong

  955. because they're not

  956. using all the gifts

  957. that I know I have.

  958. But sometimes

  959. we need to,

  960. sometimes God

  961. allows us

  962. to take a back seat

  963. and play the role

  964. of encouraging

  965. other people

  966. in using their gifts.

  967. So,

  968. I had an experience

  969. after my freshman year

  970. in college.

  971. I was a camp counselor

  972. for one week

  973. at a Christian camp

  974. on Martha's Vineyard.

  975. And I felt like

  976. a total misfit

  977. the whole week.

  978. I felt like

  979. all the other counselors,

  980. it was my first time there,

  981. I'd never been there before,

  982. it seemed like

  983. all the other counselors

  984. had been there before

  985. and knew the students

  986. who were there

  987. and the campers

  988. and they were all

  989. more talented,

  990. all the other counselors

  991. seemed more talented,

  992. more exciting to be around,

  993. had better speaking skills,

  994. connected more deeply

  995. with the kids,

  996. and I felt like

  997. God was doing

  998. some really neat things

  999. in people's lives

  1000. during that week.

  1001. but I felt like

1002. none of it was going

  1003. through me.

  1004. I felt like I was

  1005. relatively useless.

1006. And it forced me to ask,

  1007. do I compare myself

  1008. with other people

  1009. and feel frustrated

  1010. or can I rejoice

  1011. in what God's doing

  1012. through the other people

  1013. around me

  1014. and think,

  1015. how can I

  1016. encourage them

  1017. or just

  1018. pray for them

  1019. and just

  1020. get behind them?

  1021. You see,

  1022. we often get it

  1023. upside down.

  1024. Jesus says,

  1025. the kingdom of God

1026. is not centered around us,

  1027. it's centered around Jesus.

  1028. Jesus is the king

  1029. and his kingdom

  1030. is bigger than

  1031. us.

  1032. It's bigger than

  1033. any one church

  1034. or any one

  1035. denomination

  1036. or any one

  1037. network.

  1038. And so we should

  1039. never do anything

  1040. to hinder

  1041. someone else

  1042. who's doing ministry

  1043. in Jesus' name.

1044. Now what does that mean

  1045. in Jesus' name?

  1046. That doesn't just mean

  1047. anybody who says

  1048. the name of Jesus,

  1049. but in Jesus' name

  1050. means doing things

  1051. under the authority

  1052. of Jesus

  1053. and according

1054. to the word of Jesus

  1055. and in line

  1056. with the character

  1057. of Jesus.

  1058. So when we see

  1059. someone

  1060. serving other people

  1061. or even doing

  1062. powerful things

  1063. that maybe

  1064. you've never,

  1065. maybe we've never

  1066. experienced

  1067. ourselves,

  1068. we shouldn't become

  1069. jealous or envious,

  1070. Jesus,

  1071. but we should

  1072. come behind them

  1073. as long as it's

  1074. proclaiming the truth

  1075. about Jesus

  1076. and bringing glory

  1077. to Jesus.

  1078. Now Jesus tells us

  1079. in other places

  1080. that we should

  1081. exercise discernment

  1082. because he warns

  1083. that some people

  1084. will go around,

  1085. he says some people

  1086. are false prophets.

  1087. In other words,

  1088. they're preaching

  1089. a false message

  1090. or a confused message

  1091. that doesn't

  1092. clearly reflect

  1093. the biblical picture

  1094. of Jesus.

  1095. And so Jesus says

  1096. be careful,

  1097. be discerning,

  1098. don't just support

  1099. anyone and everyone

  1100. who's a religious

  1101. teacher.

  1102. But he says

  1103. it's not about,

  1104. in this passage

  1105. his emphasis is

  1106. it's not about you.

  1107. We should rejoice

  1108. whenever someone else

  1109. does a mighty work

  1110. in Jesus' name

  1111. and to encourage them.

  1112. Verse 41 says

  1113. whoever gives you

1114. a cup of cold water

  1115. because you belong

  1116. to Christ

  1117. will by no means

  1118. lose their reward.

  1119. In other words,

  1120. doing something

  1121. as small

  1122. as bringing someone

  1123. a glass of water

  1124. to quench their thirst

  1125. because they love Jesus

  1126. and because you want

  1127. to support them

  1128. in what they're doing

  1129. to love others

  1130. in Jesus' name,

  1131. Jesus says

  1132. you won't lose

  1133. your reward.

  1134. That's an important

  1135. ministry in itself.

  1136. Sometimes God

1137. will put you up front

  1138. and sometimes

  1139. he'll have you

  1140. sitting back.

  1141. And you know what?

  1142. It's all the same

  1143. in God's eyes.

  1144. if you're focused

  1145. on him.

  1146. When my wife

  1147. Jane

  1148. was in

  1149. Boston

  1150. in seminary

  1151. she went to

  1152. a little church

  1153. in Boston

  1154. called

  1155. South End

  1156. Neighborhood Church

  1157. and it was a

  1158. it's a really neat

  1159. church.

1160. If you go to Boston

1161. if you have a Sunday

1162. and you have to visit

  1163. somewhere

  1164. it's a neat place

  1165. to visit.

  1166. It's been around

  1167. for about 40 years.

  1168. it meets in

  1169. a rented

  1170. building space

  1171. that about

  1172. three other

  1173. churches use

  1174. and it's never

  1175. grown more

  1176. than 100 people.

  1177. But it has

  1178. all kinds

  1179. of people there.

  1180. There's homeless

  1181. people,

  1182. there's people

  1183. with drug

  1184. addictions

  1185. and recovering

  1186. from drug

  1187. addictions,

  1188. there's Harvard

  1189. students and MIT

  1190. students,

  1191. there's couples

  1192. and families

  1193. who have

  1194. been doing

  1195. ministry in

  1196. Boston all

  1197. their lives.

  1198. There's the

  1199. whole range,

  1200. young,

  1201. old,

  1202. any racial

  1203. group you can

  1204. think of,

  1205. rich,

  1206. poor,

  1207. but it's

  1208. never grown

  1209. to be a

  1210. large church.

  1211. But in

  1212. 40 years

  1213. they have

  1214. planted

  1215. six other

  1216. churches.

  1217. They've started

  1218. six other

  1219. churches.

  1220. One of them

  1221. is a

  1222. Spanish-speaking

  1223. church that

  1224. now has

  1225. several hundred

  1226. people.

  1227. So almost

  1228. all the other

  1229. churches they've

  1230. planted are

  1231. bigger than

  1232. them.

  1233. But they've

  1234. sent people

  1235. out,

  1236. they've

  1237. supported

  1238. pastors,

  1239. they've

  1240. encouraged

  1241. other people

  1242. to go into

  1243. other parts

  1244. of the city

  1245. to be

  1246. doing ministry

  1247. in Jesus'

  1248. name.

  1249. Now their

  1250. annual church

  1251. budget is

  1252. less than

  1253. a hundred

  1254. thousand

  1255. dollars.

  1256. It's a,

  1257. it's not

  1258. a power,

  1259. you know,

  1260. if you look

  1261. up, if you

  1262. look them up

  1263. on the

  1264. website,

  1265. they have a

  1266. very simple

  1267. website,

  1268. they're not

  1269. part of any

  1270. of the

  1271. flashy networks,

  1272. you won't

  1273. see the

  1274. pastor speaking

  1275. at a big

  1276. conference that

  1277. thousands of

  1278. people go to,

  1279. but he's a

  1280. faithful pastor,

  1281. and he loves

  1282. the people,

  1283. and he teaches

  1284. them God's

  1285. word every

  1286. week, and

  1287. he spends

  1288. time in

  1289. their lives,

  1290. and God's

  1291. used him,

  1292. he's been

  1293. there for

  1294. thirty years,

  1295. he and his

  1296. wife have

  1297. ministered

  1298. together to

  1299. people in

  1300. that church,

  1301. and raised

  1302. their kids in

  1303. that church,

  1304. and it's

  1305. been hard,

  1306. but God's

  1307. used them,

  1308. because they

  1309. have this

  1310. kind of

  1311. humble attitude,

  1312. saying we

  1313. want to be

  1314. about Jesus,

  1315. and not about

  1316. us.

  1317. So that's the

  1318. second thing,

  1319. instead of assuming

  1320. that God's

  1321. kingdom is centered

  1322. around us,

  1323. seek to

  1324. encourage anyone

  1325. else who's

  1326. centered around

  1327. Jesus.

  1328. Third, the

  1329. third contrast

  1330. is in verse

  1331. 42 through

  1332. 50, instead

  1333. of doing

  1334. whatever feels

  1335. good to us,

  1336. we make

  1337. sacrifices to

  1338. fight against

  1339. sin in our

  1340. lives.

  1341. Now if you

  1342. read verse

  1343. 42 through

  1344. 50, it

  1345. sounds sort

  1346. of harsh at

  1347. first, and

  1348. there are

  1349. strong words,

  1350. if your hand

  1351. causes you to

  1352. sin, cut it

  1353. off, if your

  1354. foot causes you

  1355. to sin, cut it

  1356. off, if your

  1357. eye causes you

  1358. to sin, cut it

  1359. off.

  1360. And you

  1361. think, what

  1362. does that

  1363. mean?

  1364. Now obviously,

  1365. Jesus isn't

  1366. speaking literally,

  1367. okay, so don't

  1368. go home and

  1369. amputate yourself.

  1370. There's been a

  1371. couple people in

  1372. church history who've

  1373. gone a little

  1374. overboard on this

  1375. verse.

  1376. I won't go into

  1377. details.

  1378. But what he's

  1379. saying here is,

  1380. kill sin, or

  1381. sin will be

  1382. killing you.

  1383. Sin is like a

  1384. deadly virus or

  1385. an infection, and

  1386. unless you deal

  1387. with it, it will

  1388. spread and infect

  1389. the rest of your

  1390. body and your

  1391. relationships, and

  1392. so deal with it

  1393. seriously.

  1394. You know, in

  1395. order to, just

  1396. like a doctor,

  1397. might have to

  1398. amputate a leg to

1399. save a life if you

  1400. have a terrible

  1401. infection or

  1402. gangrene in your

  1403. leg.

  1404. And so Jesus is

  1405. saying it's better

  1406. to be alive with

  1407. one leg instead of

  1408. dead with two.

  1409. So what might,

  1410. now what might this

  1411. look like?

  1412. Well, some

  1413. examples.

  1414. You might need to

  1415. cut off an

  1416. unhealthy dating

  1417. relationship if it's

  1418. leading you into

  1419. emotional

  1420. codependence and

  1421. sexual compromise.

  1422. Or you might need

  1423. to cancel your

  1424. Facebook account,

  1425. account, or your

  1426. internet access if

1427. it's, if the web is

  1428. sucking up all your

  1429. free time in vain

  1430. pursuits.

  1431. You might need to

  1432. cut up your credit

  1433. cards and throw them

  1434. away if you're

  1435. spending money

  1436. unwisely and getting

  1437. yourself into a

  1438. hole of debt.

  1439. You might need to

  1440. go to someone else

  1441. and say, I'm

  1442. struggling in this

1443. area, I need you to

  1444. help keep me

  1445. accountable because I

  1446. can't fight this

  1447. battle on my own.

  1448. Now all those

  1449. things are painful

  1450. to do at first.

  1451. But in the long

  1452. run, it's the only

1453. way that you can be

  1454. truly free.

  1455. The alternative is

  1456. far worse.

  1457. It's painful now or

  1458. it's much more

  1459. painful later.

  1460. You know, Jesus' words

  1461. may sound harsh, but

  1462. he says, sin is

  1463. destined for hell.

  1464. Now the word Jesus

  1465. used for hell was

  1466. Gehenna.

1467. And that was the name

  1468. of the garbage dump

  1469. outside the city of

  1470. Jerusalem.

1471. It was a place where

  1472. the fire was

  1473. perpetually burning,

  1474. where worms and

  1475. maggots fed on

  1476. decaying flesh, and

  1477. where the stench was

  1478. horrible.

  1479. It's not a

  1480. pleasant image.

  1481. But Jesus is saying

1482. this is a reality to

  1483. be avoided at all

  1484. costs.

  1485. It's much better to

  1486. suffer terribly in

1487. this life than have a

  1488. pain-free life on

  1489. earth and suffer for

  1490. all eternity.

  1491. And Jesus spoke more

  1492. than any other

  1493. biblical author about

  1494. hell.

  1495. It's a hard teaching.

  1496. You may have

  1497. questions about it.

  1498. We may need to

  1499. grapple with that.

  1500. But Jesus said these

  1501. things very seriously.

  1502. And he said them

  1503. because he doesn't

  1504. want this to happen

  1505. to us.

  1506. And Jesus also said

  1507. this because he knew

  1508. better than anyone

  1509. else what he was

  1510. talking about.

  1511. Because you know

  1512. what?

  1513. When Jesus came to

  1514. earth, he didn't

  1515. just come to suffer

  1516. by having his leg

  1517. amputated or having

  1518. his hand cut off.

  1519. He didn't just have

  1520. his eye gouged out.

1521. He had his hands and

  1522. feet nailed to a

  1523. cross.

  1524. And his head was

  1525. bleeding from a

  1526. crown of thorns

  1527. pressed into his head.

  1528. His back was

  1529. scourged by a whip

  1530. containing pieces of

  1531. bone and metal.

1532. He was mocked by the

  1533. crowds and abandoned

  1534. by his friends.

1535. And on the cross he

  1536. cried out,

  1537. my God, my God,

  1538. why have you forsaken

  1539. me?

  1540. When Jesus was

  1541. hanging on the cross,

  1542. he literally went

  1543. through hell

1544. to save us from it.

1545. When he was on the

  1546. cross, he offered

  1547. himself as a sacrifice

  1548. on our behalf

  1549. so that we

  1550. might be

  1551. cleansed

  1552. cleansed

  1553. and forgiven

  1554. and made whole

  1555. and made complete

  1556. in him.

  1557. You see, Jesus

  1558. knows what he's

  1559. talking about

  1560. when he speaks

  1561. about hell

  1562. because he actually

  1563. went through that.

  1564. He went through that

  1565. to pay the penalty

  1566. that we could not

  1567. pay.

  1568. He went through that

  1569. so that we might

  1570. become part of

  1571. his family

  1572. and be with him

  1573. forever.

  1574. You see, when that

  1575. hits home,

  1576. when we realize

  1577. that that is

  1578. the extent,

  1579. that is how far

  1580. Jesus has gone

  1581. to love us

  1582. and serve us

  1583. and rescue us

  1584. and bring us

  1585. into his family,

  1586. you see,

  1587. then we start to

  1588. look at life

1589. in a whole new way

  1590. and this passage

  1591. starts to make sense

  1592. and we realize

  1593. that when Jesus

  1594. calls us to

  1595. sacrifice,

  1596. it's not because

  1597. he wants to take

  1598. away our joy

  1599. or our happiness

  1600. but because he

  1601. wants us to have

  1602. true and pure

  1603. and eternal

  1604. joy and happiness

  1605. in him.

  1606. And when we see

  1607. the great promise

1608. that he has for us,

  1609. then we're set free

  1610. to become

  1611. self-sacrificial

  1612. instead of

  1613. self-centered.

  1614. Because it's not

  1615. just about

  1616. getting as much

  1617. as we can

  1618. in this life

  1619. or becoming

  1620. the greatest

  1621. or being better

  1622. than someone else.

  1623. But it's about

  1624. living for him

  1625. who loved us

  1626. so much

  1627. and who promises

1628. that just as he died

  1629. and rose again,

  1630. that whatever

  1631. we have to suffer

  1632. or die to

  1633. for his sake,

  1634. he'll restore it

  1635. many times over

  1636. either in this life

  1637. or in the life

  1638. to come.

  1639. He promises that

1640. at the end of the

  1641. next chapter.

  1642. We'll get there

  1643. in two weeks.

  1644. He says,

  1645. whatever you give up

  1646. for my sake,

  1647. I'll restore it

  1648. many times over.

  1649. You won't lose it

  1650. forever.

  1651. That's how we

  1652. can become

  1653. self-sacrificial

  1654. instead of self-centered.

  1655. And that's what

  1656. the last two verses

  1657. are about.

  1658. Verse 49 and 50

  1659. talk about fire

  1660. and salt.

  1661. You might think,

  1662. what in the world

  1663. is that?

  1664. Well, it's about

  1665. a sacrifice.

  1666. Because all the

  1667. sacrifices in the

  1668. temple were burnt

  1669. on the altar,

  1670. on the fire,

  1671. and all of them

  1672. had salt sprinkled

  1673. on them.

  1674. Leviticus 2.13

  1675. says that.

  1676. With all your

  1677. offerings,

  1678. you shall offer

  1679. salt.

  1680. So the point

  1681. about these verses

  1682. about salt and

  1683. fire is about

  1684. offering our

  1685. lives as a

  1686. sacrifice that

  1687. is pleasing to

  1688. God through

  1689. Jesus in

  1690. response to

  1691. the unique

  1692. sacrifice that

  1693. he made for

  1694. us.

  1695. So instead of

  1696. pursuing greatness

  1697. for ourselves,

  1698. we love those

  1699. who are the

  1700. least because

  1701. Jesus came as

  1702. a servant of

  1703. all.

  1704. Instead of

  1705. assuming that

  1706. God's kingdom

  1707. is centered

  1708. around us,

  1709. we seek to

  1710. encourage anyone

  1711. else who's

  1712. centered around

  1713. Jesus because

  1714. it's about him

  1715. and not about

  1716. us.

  1717. And instead of

  1718. doing what feels

  1719. good to us,

  1720. we're willing to

  1721. make sacrifices

  1722. to fight sin

  1723. in our lives

  1724. because Jesus

  1725. made the ultimate

  1726. sacrifice to

  1727. free us from

  1728. sin and its

  1729. consequences.

  1730. So let me

  1731. close with a

  1732. verse from

  1733. Romans that I

  1734. think captures

  1735. the message of

  1736. this passage.

  1737. And the

  1738. apostle Paul says

  1739. this, he says,

  1740. therefore I

  1741. urge you,

  1742. brothers and

  1743. sisters, in

  1744. view of God's

  1745. mercy, offer

  1746. your bodies as

  1747. a living sacrifice,

  1748. holy and

  1749. acceptable to

  1750. God, for this

  1751. is your reasonable

  1752. service.

  1753. Do not be

  1754. conformed to the

  1755. pattern of this

  1756. world, but be

  1757. transformed by the

  1758. renewing of your

  1759. mind.

  1760. Let's pray.

  1761. Lord Jesus, we

  1762. thank you for the

  1763. price you paid to

  1764. reclaim us, to

  1765. adopt us, and to

  1766. take us in as

  1767. your children with

  1768. all the mess and

  1769. all the sin and

  1770. all the weakness and

  1771. all the neediness

  1772. that we bring with

  1773. us.

  1774. We thank you for

  1775. the love and joy

  1776. that you have in

  1777. bringing us near to

  1778. you and in

  1779. welcoming us into

  1780. your family.

  1781. We thank you for

  1782. the great sacrifice

  1783. you made for us.

  1784. Lord, we pray that

  1785. what you have done

  1786. for us would

  1787. shape us and

  1788. change us.

  1789. For your sake.

  1790. Amen.

  1791. Amen.

  1792. Mindy.

  1793. Yes.

  1794. Yes.

  1795. So the word

  1796. translated hell here

  1797. is a Greek word

  1798. Gehenna, which is

  1799. from the, it's a

  1800. word that referred,

  1801. that was used to

  1802. refer to the garbage

  1803. dump outside the

  1804. city of Jerusalem in

  1805. what's called the

  1806. Valley of Ben-Hinnom.

  1807. So the Hebrew

  1808. Hinnom and

  1809. Gehenna, that sort

  1810. of came, the words

  1811. are related.

  1812. It was an image

  1813. that was common in

  1814. Jesus' day for

1815. hell as a place of

  1816. punishment and

  1817. separation from

  1818. God's presence.

1819. So he was using a

  1820. familiar image that

  1821. would have brought

  1822. up these images in

  1823. people's minds of

  1824. a stinky, rotting,

  1825. burning,

  1826. dump.

  1827. So.

  1828. Should we take him

  1829. literally?

  1830. Is that what hell

1831. was going to be like?

  1832. Should we take him

  1833. literally?

  1834. Yeah.

  1835. Yeah, that's a good

  1836. question.

  1837. No, that's a good

  1838. question.

  1839. I think, so I think

  1840. there's several, there's

  1841. a few different images

  1842. that come up in

  1843. scripture for hell.

  1844. Some are related to

  1845. fire.

  1846. some are related to

  1847. darkness, being the

  1848. outer darkness.

  1849. Some are related to

  1850. anguish and frustration

  1851. that's never resolved.

  1852. And hell is described

  1853. as a place where

  1854. there's, where things

  1855. are never made right

  1856. with God.

  1857. where people continue

  1858. in their

  1859. rebellious

  1860. attitude toward God

  1861. and

  1862. don't.

  1863. That there's

  1864. sort of a

  1865. point of no return.

  1866. How literally

  1867. should we take those

  1868. things?

  1869. I think if

  1870. if they're not

  1871. literal,

  1872. they're meant to

  1873. point to something

  1874. if, so if it's a

  1875. metaphor, the reason

  1876. why we have

  1877. metaphors is because

  1878. it's a reality that's

  1879. greater than we can

  1880. literally describe.

  1881. And so, if it's

  1882. metaphorical, I think

  1883. it's basically saying,

  1884. it's not saying it's

  1885. not that bad, it's

  1886. saying it's worse.

1887. So, the point is, I

  1888. think in all the

  1889. descriptions of hell,

1890. the point is not to

  1891. figure out exactly what

  1892. hell is like.

  1893. It's to realize you

  1894. don't want to be

  1895. there.

  1896. And thank God that

  1897. Jesus has been

  1898. willing to go through

  1899. that to provide a

  1900. way out.

1901. And I think it puts

  1902. some of our

  1903. sufferings in this

  1904. life in perspective

  1905. where Jesus is

  1906. saying, you know,

  1907. consider the

  1908. alternative.

1909. Yeah, is it hard to

  1910. follow me?

  1911. Yes.

  1912. Does it require

  1913. sacrifices to follow

  1914. me of things that

  1915. feel like giving up

  1916. a lot?

  1917. Yes.

  1918. But when we think

  1919. in light of eternity,

  1920. both in light of

  1921. hell, but also in

  1922. light of what he

  1923. promises in heaven.

  1924. And I think we'd

  1925. see our lives

  1926. differently and be

  1927. free to sacrifice

  1928. some things now for

  1929. a good purpose instead

1930. of holding on to them

  1931. because we feel like

1932. this is all we've got

1933. and this is what we're

  1934. living for in this

  1935. life.

  1936. more questions.

  1937. Yes.

  1938. Yes.

  1939. That's a very good question.

1940. How do you know what to take literally versus figuratively in the Bible?

1941. And what are the criteria that we would use to, you know, responsibly determine that?

  1942. That's a great question.

  1943. So it's a big question.

1944. So some parts of the Bible, so if you take one of the Psalms, the Psalms are poetry.

1945. And in other parts of the Bible, some of the prophetic literature is poetic literature.

1946. And so when you're reading poetry, you look for symbols.

  1947. You look for metaphors.

1948. You look for things that are describing things, not in a scientifically precise way, but in an evocative way,

1949. in a way that engages your emotions and conveys some of the reality of what they're talking about.

1950. When you're reading some of the narratives, say some of the gospel narratives about Jesus,

1951. they're written in a very historical narrative format.

1952. And, you know, if you can compare them to other literature, they're not written in the same way as, you know,

1953. myths about Greek gods or something like that.

1954. It's a different form of literature that's rooted in history.

1955. So I think some of it is the kind of literature sort of looking at what kind of book are we reading.

1956. So that's why it's always helpful when you face a particular verse or a paragraph or passage

1957. and you're thinking, how do I interpret this?

1958. We have to step back and say, well, what book am I reading this in?

1959. And what's the main point of this book and how does this passage fit into the larger point of this book?

1960. So, and then also comparing it to other passages that are teaching similar things here.

1961. So I think whenever the Bible is describing things that haven't happened yet or that are in the future in our experience.

1962. So in the Old Testament, when there are prophecies about the Messiah, there were descriptions,

1963. but a lot of it is, it's something that people hadn't yet experienced and so they couldn't fully put it into words.

1964. So in the same way in the New Testament, when there's descriptions of heaven or descriptions of hell,

1965. they are metaphorical because we haven't yet experienced them fully and so we can't fully put them into words,

1966. which is different than writings about things that have happened, like writings about what happened in Jesus' life.

1967. Well, that had already happened, they'd experienced it, so they're putting it into words in a historical way.

1968. Looking towards something in the future, I think God is giving us a picture of what it's going to be like,

1969. but it's, but it is, there's a metaphor involved in that we haven't yet been there.

1970. But he's giving us a description of what it's going to be like so that we can live our life in light of that.

  1971. It's, how would I put it?

1972. It's, I mean, it's like if you're trying, I mean, it's like if you're trying to tell someone, you know, where you're going on a road trip,

1973. and they've never been, it's like if you're trying to tell someone about the Grand Canyon,

1974. and they've never been there, and let's say you don't have any photographs, you know,

1975. and you have to describe it, and you're trying to describe this amazing thing.

1976. If you've been there, if you've seen it, or if you've been to any sort of natural wonder,

1977. it's almost beyond what you can describe in words.

1978. Even if you, like, draw a little diagram, that doesn't quite do it.

1979. And so you're trying to describe this great reality so that, so the person will be like,

1980. yeah, like, it's worth the road trip to get there.

1981. It's worth driving all the way across the country through the desert for days and days,

1982. and hiking down to the bottom of it, or something.

1983. Whatever you want, you know, you get the idea.

1984. But this is a very good question.

1985. We could talk more about that, but maybe that's a beginning to it.

1986. All right, well, if you have more questions, stick around.

  1987. Talk with one another.

1988. Talk with me if you want.

1989. But there's snacks in the back.

1990. Get a bulletin as you go out.
