  1. We'll go with that.

  2. Good evening, church.

  3. Let's turn to Mark 10, verses 1 to 16.

    Mark 10:1–16

  4. In the words of the priest from the princess bride,

  5. marriage is what brings us to Geza tonight.

  6. It's page 845.

  7. And it goes as follows.

  8. And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan.

  9. And crowds gathered to him again.

  10. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.

  11. And Pharisees came up.

  12. And in order to test him, asked,

  13. Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?

  14. He answered them,

  15. What did Moses command you?

  16. They said,

  17. Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.

  18. And Jesus said to them,

  19. Because of your hardness of heart, he wrote you this commandment.

  20. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.

  21. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife,

  22. and the two shall become one flesh.

  23. So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

  24. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.

  25. And in the house, the disciples asked him again about this matter.

  26. And he said to them,

  27. Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.

  28. And if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.

  29. And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them.

  30. And the disciples rebuked them.

  31. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them,

  32. Let the children come to me.

  33. Do not hinder them.

  34. For to such belongs the kingdom of God.

  35. Truly, I say to you,

  36. Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.

  37. And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

  38. Let's pray.

  39. Heavenly Father, I thank you for this time that you have allowed us to gather in worship.

  40. Lord, I ask that as the word goes forth that you bless it,

  41. that you soften the hearts of the hearers.

  42. Lord, by your spirit, continue to shape each of us into the image of your son.

  43. As we seek to obey what you tell us to do, Lord.

  44. I pray these things in the name of your son, Jesus Christ,

  45. and by the power of your Holy Spirit.

  46. Amen.

  47. So, in going through the book of Mark,

  48. we've been keeping an eye on who Christ is

  49. and what it means for us to follow him.

  50. In these few verses,

  51. we get some specific teachings

  52. and some specific guidelines.

  53. Not only what it means to follow him,

  54. but how to do it.

  55. He does that in chapter 10 by reversing expectations.

  56. Two statements.

  57. The two shall become one,

  58. and adults are to be as children.

  59. When we dive into chapter 10,

  60. we see the Pharisees trying to trap Jesus.

  61. Verse 2.

  62. And the Pharisees came up in order to test him,

  63. and they asked him,

  64. is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?

  65. So, what is this trap?

  66. The first thing we're going to have to learn about

  67. is what Jewish people were talking about

  68. in this divorce issue.

  69. There are essentially two camps.

  70. One would say that a man can divorce his wife

  71. for any cause whatsoever,

  72. even if she burns his food.

  73. The other would say

  74. that divorce can only take place for a serious offense.

  75. Specifically, premarital sex would be one of them.

  76. So, Jesus seemingly has two options.

  77. He could answer yes,

  78. but if he answers yes,

  79. he's going to be vocally aligning himself with one party,

  80. and members of the other party could stir up opposition.

  81. But if he says no,

  82. he could be accused of trying to negate the law of Moses,

  83. which is not on the list of best things to do

  84. in front of Jewish authorities.

  85. So, all things considered,

  86. the Pharisees have got him.

  87. Jesus is backed into a corner

  88. with nowhere to turn, right?

  89. Oh, no.

  90. Jesus does not fall into that trap.

  91. Instead, he digs right to the heart of the issue.

  92. What the Pharisees meant as a political maneuver,

  93. Jesus uses as an opportunity

  94. to reveal to us the divine intention of marriage.

  95. As with all of Jesus' teachings,

  96. we get a glimpse into the mind of God.

  97. What does he say?

  98. Well, he begins by turning the question back on the Pharisees.

  99. He says,

  100. What did Moses command you?

  101. They respond with their understanding of Deuteronomy 24,

  102. that Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce

  103. and to send her away.

  104. But why did Moses allow that?

  105. According to Jesus,

  106. it was because of their hardness of heart.

  107. Note Jesus' consistency in tone and focus.

  108. The questions posed are general.

  109. Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?

  110. Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce

  111. and to send her away.

  112. But Jesus' response is personal.

  113. What did Moses command you?

  114. He gave this commandment because of your hardness of heart.

  115. You can feel the Pharisees squirming.

  116. First of all, he's saying

  117. that the general teaching on divorce

  118. is neither ideal

  119. nor is it indicative of God's purpose for marriage.

  120. Like much of the Mosaic law,

  121. while it is good and holy,

  122. it's not the fullness of God's will for his people.

  123. In essence, the talking about divorce

  124. is an allowance made

  125. because of Israel's and our sinful hardness of heart.

  126. Too often we, like the Jewish people

  127. of Jesus' time and before,

  128. see divorce as an unfortunate occurrence,

  129. but one that is necessary

  130. when we fall out of love

  131. or find ourselves having irreconcilable differences.

  132. But that's not the paradigm that Jesus is setting here.

  133. His teaching is clear from the next few verses,

  134. starting in verse 6.

  135. But from the beginning of creation,

  136. God made them male and female.

  137. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother

  138. and hold fast to his wife,

  139. and the two shall become one flesh.

  140. So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

  141. What therefore God has joined together,

  142. let no man separate.

  143. One can imagine Jesus hitting the Pharisees

  144. with this statement

  145. and dropping the proverbial microphone.

  146. What began as an attempted trap

  147. actually results in an accusation

  148. and the invoking of divine authority.

  149. I want us to catch what he's just said.

  150. The central idea of Christ's statement

  151. is that marriage is a divinely ordained institution.

  152. The agent in these verses is God.

  153. God created us male and female.

  154. When it says that the man shall hold fast to his wife,

  155. that's a passive verb.

  156. The man will be joined to his wife,

  157. presumably by God.

  158. In saying that the two are no longer two,

  159. but one flesh,

  160. Christ declares God's intention

  161. for marriage is permanence.

  162. The divine pairing of the vows

  163. and sexual consummation in marriage

  164. seals the deal.

  165. This is not a thing that you just get into

  166. because, well, we've been dating for a while

  167. and it's the logical next step.

  168. If you're going to get into this,

  169. you better be good and sure you're in it for life.

  170. Till death do you part.

  171. Christ puts the lid on this in verse 9

  172. when he says,

  173. what God has joined together,

  174. let not man separate.

  175. The contrast made here is between God

  176. and what God has done

  177. and man and what man seeks to do.

  178. Seeking to separate what God has joined?

  179. Do we see the perversity in that?

  180. Do we see that this is literally

  181. the tearing of a one flesh union?

  182. This is why the halls of divorce courts

  183. are the most miserable halls of a courthouse.

  184. This is the scriptural reason

  185. for the fact that the three most stressful events

  186. in a person's life,

  187. according to the American Institute of Stress,

  188. are the death of a spouse first,

  189. which is God breaking the union,

  190. and divorce and marital separation

  191. in spots two and three.

  192. What takes place in a divorce

  193. is not that two people disagree

  194. and peacefully go their separate ways.

  195. What God has joined,

  196. man has sought to separate.

  197. And chances are,

  198. we have all,

  199. in one way or another,

  200. suffered the effects of that trauma.

  201. Desiree and I,

  202. over winter break,

  203. got into watching

  204. My Strange Addiction on TLC.

  205. It's a show where individuals

  206. suffer from strange,

  207. often dangerous,

  208. compulsive behaviors,

  209. like eating couch cushions

  210. or drinking gasoline

  211. or bathing in bleach.

  212. Just all kinds of ridiculous things.

  213. But there are three major reasons

  214. why these behaviors started.

  215. It could have been

  216. the death of a family member.

  217. It could have been sexual

  218. or physical abuse.

  219. But the most common one

  220. was divorce of their parents.

  221. As children witnessing

  222. the breaking of a covenant,

  223. something inside them snapped.

  224. Witnessing what is essentially portrayed

  225. as decapitation scripturally,

  226. the separation of the husband as head

  227. from the wife as body,

  228. is not something that anyone

  229. walks away from without scars.

  230. Of course,

  231. this does not elevate divorce

  232. to some kind of unforgivable sin level.

  233. In all such situations,

  234. Christ reaches out

  235. when we turn to him in repentance.

  236. When he met the woman at the well

  237. in John 4

  238. and referred to her past five husbands

  239. and the current man that she lived with

  240. who was not her husband,

  241. he still offered her living water.

  242. But I hope we see from this

  243. that divorce is not to be taken lightly.

  244. Ideally,

  245. it ought not even be a Christian option.

  246. But how in the world do we do that?

  247. When the disciples hear these words in Matthew,

  248. they respond saying,

  249. if such is the case of a man with his wife,

  250. it's better not to marry.

  251. How can married couples,

  252. specifically Christian married couples,

  253. uphold that standard?

  254. And no remarriage?

  255. Doesn't that seem unnecessarily restrictive?

  256. Not just that,

  257. what about single people?

  258. All this talk about marriage

  259. seems to be leaving them out, right?

  260. Well,

  261. let's see why this leads into a discussion of children.

  262. Verses 13 through 16.

  263. And they were bringing children to him

  264. that he might touch them,

  265. and the disciples rebuked them.

  266. But when Jesus saw it,

  267. he was indignant and said to them,

  268. let the children come to me,

  269. do not hinder them,

  270. for to such belongs the kingdom of God.

  271. Truly I say to you,

  272. whoever does not receive the kingdom of God

  273. like a child

  274. shall not enter it.

  275. So after saying these things about divorce,

  276. people are bringing their children to Jesus,

  277. and the disciples shoo the children away.

  278. After all, they're children,

  279. and this is the Messiah.

  280. I mean, Jesus just,

  281. two chapters ago,

  282. Jesus just came down off of a mountain,

  283. having been transformed

  284. with radiant, blazingly white clothes.

  285. Surely Jesus has better things to do

  286. than deal with snot-nosed kids.

  287. As Pastor Greg pointed out last week,

  288. children are helpless,

  289. needy,

  290. and they make a mess all the time.

  291. Surely Jesus doesn't have time for them, right?

  292. Again, wrong.

  293. Jesus got mad at the disciples

  294. for pushing them away.

  295. And he got mad because the disciples,

  296. as is often their problem,

  297. especially in the book of Mark,

  298. don't get it.

  299. And they don't get it

  300. in the same way that we often don't get it.

  301. They don't understand

  302. that to enter into the kingdom of God,

  303. in order to be able to do

  304. what Christ tells us to do,

  305. what he desires us to do,

  306. we must receive the kingdom of God

  307. as a child would.

  308. We must be like children.

  309. So what does that mean?

  310. I can tell you what it doesn't mean.

  311. It's not a reference to innocence.

  312. We've got a cultural understanding

  313. of children as innocent creatures

  314. that's unhelpful

  315. and unbiblical.

  316. And I'm sure that anyone here

  317. who has children

  318. can back me up when I say,

  319. well,

  320. just from, you know,

  321. studying the habits of babies,

  322. that babies are little selfish monsters.

  323. Gifts from God, of course,

  324. according to Psalm 127,

  325. a heritage from the Lord,

  326. but from birth,

  327. we know their and our sinful nature.

  328. Crying and whining to get what you want,

  329. willful disobedience,

  330. no care for whether the parents are sleeping,

  331. or the fact that it's four o'clock in the morning

  332. and the baby's woken you up

  333. every 45 minutes.

  334. That doesn't sound innocent to me.

  335. So what is Christ saying here?

  336. He's saying that we, like children,

  337. must act in continuous dependence

  338. on our loving Father.

  339. This goes back to what Greg said last week

  340. about children.

  341. They're helpless, needy,

  342. and they make a mess all the time.

  343. Is that not us?

  344. Are we not helpless when we face situations

  345. that we can't control and don't understand?

  346. Are we not constantly needy?

  347. Do we not make constant messes,

  348. whether in our relationships

  349. or in our personal lives?

  350. But the advantage that we have

  351. is that, as John says,

  352. to all who received Christ,

  353. who believed in his name,

  354. he gave the right to become children of God.

  355. To receive the kingdom of God as a child

  356. is to live a life

  357. where you consistently remind yourself

  358. of your dependence on the power,

  359. love, and support

  360. of your heavenly Father.

  361. To go back to this portrayal as children,

  362. when we soil ourselves in sin,

  363. it is the Father who cleans us up.

  364. As a matter of fact,

  365. that's why he sent his son.

  366. His son got down and dirty,

  367. sharing with us our experiences of pain,

  368. hunger, and thirst,

  369. and ultimately being brutally tortured,

  370. humiliated, and killed.

  371. But he did that to save us.

  372. He did that because we were helpless

  373. to save ourselves.

  374. And by that sacrifice,

  375. he reminds us,

  376. as he says in John 15, 5,

  377. apart from me,

  378. you can do nothing.

  379. So how does this help us

  380. with the preceding scripture

  381. about marriage and divorce?

  382. Well, it's a reminder

  383. of our dependence

  384. on our loving Father

  385. for the strength and resolve

  386. to consistently do

  387. what he wants us to do.

  388. When you get two sinful people

  389. into a marriage,

  390. which is every marriage,

  391. a deep, profound,

  392. and intensely personal relationship,

  393. stuff gets real complicated

  394. and real messy real fast.

  395. But this is at its core

  396. a question of discipleship.

  397. We need to consistently

  398. remind ourselves

  399. of the grace and forgiveness

  400. that he shows us

  401. when we repent

  402. so that we can show

  403. that same grace and forgiveness

  404. to our spouses.

  405. We must remember

  406. the love that he showed us

  407. so that we can show

  408. that same love to our spouses.

  409. We must remember,

  410. believe in,

  411. and meditate on his death

  412. so that the husband and wife

  413. in Christian marriage

  414. can die continually

  415. to themselves

  416. for one another.

  417. We don't get married

  418. for self-actualization.

  419. We don't get married

  420. to foist our own selfishness

  421. on another person

  422. demanding that they satisfy us

  423. or we roll out.

  424. Therefore,

  425. they are no longer two,

  426. but one.

  427. What God has joined,

  428. let no man separate.

  429. Christian marriage

  430. is meant to exemplify

  431. Christ's relationship

  432. with the church.

  433. Permanent,

  434. uniting,

  435. divinely ordained,

  436. and beautiful.

  437. And that's where

  438. I want us to end.

  439. The beauty.

  440. Paul calls marriage

  441. a mystery

  442. that refers to

  443. Christ's relationship

  444. with the church.

  445. Now,

  446. when we hear

  447. the word mystery,

  448. we think a whodunit

  449. or something that's

  450. mysterious,

  451. inaccessible,

  452. out in the ether somewhere

  453. and we'll never figure out

  454. what it's about.

  455. That's not,

  456. that's not how mysteries

  457. function in scripture.

  458. When we see a mystery

  459. in the New Testament,

  460. it refers to something

  461. that we couldn't have

  462. figured out

  463. but something that God

  464. had to reveal.

  465. In many cases,

  466. it's something hinted at

  467. in the Old Testament

  468. and more fully revealed

  469. in the New.

  470. The meaning of marriage

  471. is just such a mystery.

  472. So,

  473. married people,

  474. how is your marriage

  475. to image Christ's

  476. relationship with the church?

  477. The constant

  478. self-sacrificial love

  479. that is the cornerstone

  480. of your relationship

  481. with Christ,

  482. the fact that he died

  483. for you

  484. when you were still

  485. his enemy,

  486. that is to be

  487. the defining factor

  488. of your marriage.

  489. That dynamic

  490. empowered by the Holy Spirit

  491. is the glorious glue

  492. that holds you together.

  493. It has its unique challenges

  494. but it also has

  495. its unique rewards.

  496. The world needs to see that

  497. and our church

  498. needs to see that.

  499. Now,

  500. for the single,

  501. to the engaged

  502. like myself,

  503. this seems perhaps

  504. like an exaltation

  505. of human marriage

  506. above all else.

  507. So,

  508. here's another secret.

  509. Jewish marriage

  510. came in three stages.

  511. First,

  512. the couple would get engaged

  513. which would be a contract

  514. to marry each other

  515. at a future time.

  516. The next step

  517. would be betrothal

  518. where the couple

  519. is considered

  520. legally married

  521. but they don't have

  522. conjugal rights yet.

  523. The bride lives

  524. with her parents

  525. while the bridegroom

  526. goes to prepare

  527. a place for her.

  528. Some of you can already

  529. see where this is going.

  530. The last stage

  531. of the marriage

  532. is the actual

  533. wedding feast

  534. after which the couple

  535. consummates their marriage.

  536. One could see

  537. the gospel work

  538. in three stages as well.

  539. Christ has been

  540. promised to us

  541. from the Old Testament,

  542. we might say,

  543. from the law

  544. and the prophets.

  545. In his death

  546. and his resurrection,

  547. he has secured us

  548. legally,

  549. but we don't quite

  550. have conjugal rights yet,

  551. so to speak.

  552. Paul says in Romans

  553. 3, 21 to 25,

  554. But now the righteousness

  555. of God has been

  556. manifested apart

  557. from the law,

  558. although the law

  559. and the prophets

  560. bear witness to it.

  561. The righteousness

  562. of God through faith

  563. in Jesus Christ

  564. for all who believe.

  565. For there is no distinction,

  566. for all have sinned

  567. and fallen short

  568. of the glory of God

  569. and are justified

  570. by his grace

  571. as a gift

  572. through the redemption

  573. that is in Christ Jesus,

  574. whom God put forth

  575. as a propitiation

  576. by his blood

  577. to be received

  578. by faith.

  579. This redemption

  580. in Christ Jesus,

  581. whom God put forward

  582. as an atoning sacrifice

  583. for our sin,

  584. when we receive it

  585. by faith,

  586. we are declared

  587. just.

  588. That's what justified

  589. means for us.

  590. By faith,

  591. we are legally declared

  592. not guilty,

  593. not on our own merit,

  594. but on the all-sufficient

  595. merit of our Lord

  596. Jesus Christ.

  597. All of that is to say,

  598. as the betrothed spouse

  599. is legally married,

  600. so have we been

  601. legally acquired

  602. by our heavenly bridegroom.

  603. And as Christians,

  604. we eagerly await

  605. to be reunited

  606. to our Lord

  607. and to enjoy

  608. his presence

  609. for eternity.

  610. As single Christians,

  611. we have a unique opportunity

  612. for, as Paul says,

  613. undistracted devotion

  614. to the Lord.

  615. And I assure you,

  616. Christ has more for you

  617. in his person

  618. than any other person

  619. on this earth.

  620. You see,

  621. human marriage

  622. is meant to be permanent

  623. as long as both parties

  624. are alive.

  625. But when we die,

  626. that's actually

  627. when the real feast begins.

  628. That's the real marriage

  629. that we're a part of.

  630. As Christians,

  631. by faith

  632. and by utter grace,

  633. we have entered

  634. into this marriage.

  635. And it's the Holy Spirit's

  636. cooperative work with us

  637. that's basically

  638. just wedding prep.

  639. sanctification is just that.

  640. Preparing ourselves

  641. and being prepared

  642. for our wondrous bridegroom.

  643. Marriage is what

  644. brings us together.

  645. But not just human marriage.

  646. We're talking about

  647. the marriage

  648. that we have

  649. with our Lord and Savior,

  650. Jesus Christ.

  651. And as Christians,

  652. regardless of our

  653. marital state,

  654. that is the reality

  655. that should animate us

  656. and excite us,

  657. motivating us

  658. to live the lives

  659. that God commands us

  660. to live through Christ

  661. and enables us to live

  662. by His Holy Spirit.

  663. Let's pray.

  664. Heavenly Father,

  665. we thank you for

  666. purchasing us

  667. with a price.

  668. Lord,

  669. all of us have

  670. sinned and fallen

  671. short of your glory.

  672. But Lord,

  673. by faith,

  674. when we take hold

  675. of Christ's sacrifice,

  676. we know that

  677. when you look at us,

  678. you no longer see

  679. us and all of our flaws

  680. and all of our

  681. constant sin, Lord,

  682. but we have been washed

  683. by the blood of Christ.

  684. Lord,

  685. I pray for all those

  686. present here

  687. that you continue

  688. to wash them,

  689. continue to forgive

  690. each and every one of us

  691. as we continue

  692. to struggle

  693. in this age

  694. that we're currently in.

  695. But Lord,

  696. I ask that you continue

  697. to prepare each

  698. and every one of us

  699. for that glorious

  700. wedding feast

  701. that we have

  702. to look forward to.

  703. Lord,

  704. for the married couples,

  705. bless their unions.

  706. Lord,

  707. remind them

  708. that their marriage

  709. is an image

  710. of Christ

  711. and the church.

  712. And as Christ

  713. would not leave

  714. His church,

  715. I pray that

  716. that same commitment

  717. is present

  718. in each of the marriages

  719. here, Lord.

  720. For the single Christians

  721. here, Lord,

  722. I pray that

  723. I pray that our devotion

  724. to the Lord

  725. continue to grow.

  726. That for all of us

  727. our relationship

  728. with you

  729. is first and foremost.

  730. Lord,

  731. I pray these things

  732. in the name of

  733. your Son,

  734. Jesus Christ,

  735. and by the power

  736. of your Holy Spirit.

  737. Amen.

  738. So,

  739. after every

  740. sermon

  741. in the evening service,

  742. sorry,

  743. you can be seated.

  744. I'm sorry,

  745. that was my fault.

  746. So,

  747. after every

  748. evening service,

  749. we have

  750. a question

  751. and answer

  752. portion.

  753. So,

  754. you may ask

  755. whatever question

  756. you wish.

  757. It can be about

  758. the passage,

  759. it can be about

  760. anything that came up

  761. over the course

  762. of the sermon,

  763. anything at all.

  764. Yes,

  765. yes.

  766. Yes.

  767. I was commanded to,

  768. that's what I,

  769. but,

  770. but second part?

  771. Okay,

  772. so,

  773. first of all,

  774. why this one?

  775. As I said,

  776. I was commanded to.

  777. This was the weekend

  778. that Desiree was going

  779. to be in town.

  780. I had chosen

  781. another week.

  782. I told her that.

  783. She said she was going

  784. to be in town this week,

  785. so I'd better be

  786. preaching that week.

  787. And it just happens

  788. to be the weekend

  789. of Valentine's Day,

  790. which is also

  791. a sermon on divorce,

  792. so it's just like,

  793. okay,

  794. I guess this is happening.

  795. As for how it's,

  796. as for how it's affected

  797. me,

  798. going into,

  799. so,

  800. so going into,

  801. you know,

  802. proposing and going

  803. into the engagement

  804. and all that,

  805. my first,

  806. my first emotion

  807. has always been

  808. excitement

  809. and anticipation.

  810. As I've continued

  811. to do this,

  812. specifically doing this,

  813. doing this kind of prep,

  814. it was sobering for me

  815. in seeing what,

  816. what Christ says

  817. marriage is.

  818. Ideally,

  819. in,

  820. in,

  821. in it being the picture,

  822. in it being the picture

  823. of Christ's relationship

  824. with the church,

  825. like,

  826. that's a,

  827. that's a really,

  828. really big deal.

  829. It's made me really

  830. even more excited,

  831. but it's,

  832. but it's,

  833. but,

  834. but,

  835. but that excitement

  836. is also,

  837. it's present with

  838. a very,

  839. very deep soberness

  840. about the,

  841. just,

  842. just the,

  843. just the magnanimity

  844. of the,

  845. of the institution

  846. that I'm in,

  847. that I'm entering into.

  848. But for me,

  849. what's been really important

  850. for me,

  851. and this is what

  852. initially prompted me

  853. to,

  854. to,

  855. to,

  856. to propose,

  857. was essentially

  858. when the Lord

  859. revealed to me

  860. that the,

  861. that,

  862. that the two of us

  863. would bring more glory

  864. to him together

  865. than apart from one another.

  866. And at that,

  867. and at that point

  868. I was like,

  869. okay,

  870. well I just gotta buy this ring

  871. and go ahead and do this.

  872. So,

  873. at that point,

  874. there it was.

  875. But,

  876. but,

  877. but this,

  878. but this preparation process

  879. has,

  880. has,

  881. it's,

  882. it's sobered me,

  883. it's sobered me deeply.

  884. As I,

  885. as I,

  886. as I think about the commitment

  887. that I'm gonna make

  888. and 160 days.

  889. Yeah.

  890. What's that?

  891. Uh.

  892. Main Wohn-

  893. Mm-hmm.

  894. Does marriage have any meaning?

  895. I think, and I think this comes from,

  896. it comes from, I mean, what Christ says in Mark,

  897. and also what Paul says in Ephesians,

  898. but I think that we as Christians

  899. must be willing to stand on the fact

  900. that marriage does have meaning.

  901. And I think we have to stand on that

  902. because it's a model of Christ's relationship

  903. with the church.

  904. And so as such, that's not something

  905. that we can sacrifice.

  906. And I really think that the burden

  907. is really on us specifically

  908. because God has told us what marriage is about.

  909. And so as such, the marriages in the church,

  910. that's something that we have to be willing to commit to.

  911. A knowledge that when I enter into this,

  912. I'm entering into something

  913. that is to represent Christ's relationship

  914. with the church.

  915. So in that sense, yes,

  916. marriage absolutely does have meaning.

  917. And I think that we as the church

  918. have a unique responsibility

  919. to really be an image of that.

  920. Because, I mean, I deeply believe

  921. that it's only by the power of the Holy Spirit

  922. that marriage can be as beautiful

  923. as God meant for it to be.

  924. And so, and we as the body of Christ

  925. have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us.

  926. And so I think that's something

  927. that we need to consistently uphold.

  928. Yeah.

  929. Yeah.

  930. What is the best way to cut this path

  931. on people that are divorced to take this path?

  932. Yeah.

  933. Yeah.

  934. Yeah.

  935. Yeah.

  936. Sure, sure, sure.

  937. So what is the,

  938. or what's the best thing for couples

  939. who are divorced to deal with this passage?

  940. So one of the things,

  941. and this is,

  942. I mean, Paul talks about this too,

  943. but the message of it is

  944. that there are essentially two things,

  945. two things to do if you are divorced.

  946. You either remain unmarried

  947. or you're reconciled to your husband.

  948. One of the things that,

  949. and I think this is another thing

  950. that I think the church needs to be

  951. really adamant about

  952. is that the single life is not

  953. a torturous,

  954. unsustainable life.

  955. It's,

  956. and I,

  957. and I tried to,

  958. I tried to touch on this

  959. a little bit in the sermon,

  960. but the single,

  961. the single person as single

  962. has a,

  963. has a unique opportunity

  964. to image Christ's relationship

  965. with the church.

  966. And so,

  967. and so both options,

  968. whether it is remaining unmarried

  969. or,

  970. or being reconciled,

  971. or being,

  972. or being reconciled to your spouse,

  973. in both situations,

  974. there is,

  975. there is an image of Christ

  976. in the church

  977. that you are to,

  978. that,

  979. that we're to shine forth.

  980. And in,

  981. and in all those cases,

  982. we always seek reconciliation

  983. as the first,

  984. as the first,

  985. as,

  986. as the first option.

  987. But sometimes that's,

  988. sometimes that doesn't,

  989. that doesn't work out.

  990. But our commitment to the Lord

  991. is first,

  992. is first and foremost.

  993. And so that's,

  994. that's the,

  995. that's the response to that.

  996. But one of,

  997. but,

  998. but,

  999. but also as I said,

1000. I don't want it to seem like

1001. divorce is some kind of

  1002. unforgivable sin that like,

  1003. if you're,

  1004. if you're divorced,

1005. we kick you out of the church

1006. and we're no longer fellowship with you.

  1007. That's,

  1008. that's absolutely not

  1009. the way that we,

1010. the way that we ever want to,

  1011. want to approach it.

  1012. As I was saying,

  1013. you know,

  1014. it's a,

  1015. it's a painful,

  1016. it's a deeply,

  1017. deeply painful process.

1018. And we as the church

1019. should be willing to come up,

1020. to come alongside one another

  1021. through that,

  1022. through that pain,

  1023. praying for one another.

  1024. So.

  1025. Yeah,

  1026. Matt.

  1027. Yeah,

1028. so why don't you touch on

  1029. just in your answer,

  1030. but our society

1031. gives us a lot of

  1032. bad,

  1033. I mean,

  1034. we have good,

  1035. you know,

  1036. examples like this sermon

  1037. and God's words

1038. tell us what a good marriage is,

1039. but at that same time

  1040. we have our society,

  1041. you know,

  1042. bombarding us

  1043. with also,

  1044. you know,

  1045. their own marriage

1046. of what marriage is like.

  1047. Yeah.

  1048. For example,

1049. if you see on a new television show,

1050. you look at a marriage,

  1051. it's usually the woman

  1052. who's calling this out

  1053. to the man

  1054. who just says there,

  1055. like,

  1056. yes,

  1057. David,

  1058. yes,

  1059. whatever you say.

  1060. there,

  1061. you know,

  1062. the law is good.

  1063. And the legalistic things

  1064. are not the law,

1065. but what you should expect

  1066. and,

  1067. you know,

  1068. there's nothing

1069. to do wrong with it.

  1070. And then,

  1071. on the flip side,

  1072. you know,

1073. the church is not necessarily,

  1074. I mean,

  1075. I think it's better

  1076. at doing this,

1077. but at the same time

1078. as you were just talking about,

  1079. you know,

  1080. the church can,

  1081. especially certain churches

  1082. can really crush it,

1083. but if you're not married,

  1084. you're somehow

  1085. a second class,

  1086. you know,

  1087. Christian type thing

1088. or certain notions about marriage

1089. can be messed up as well.

  1090. So, can you comment

1091. on some of those things

1092. and just how, you know,

1093. what are the lies and pitfalls

  1094. that perhaps crashed through

  1095. your own personal,

  1096. your most commonly called

  1097. religious subjections.

  1098. It's up to you.

  1099. Sure.

  1100. Oh.

  1101. Oh.

  1102. Oh.

1103. Traps that we are particularly

  1104. parallel.

  1105. Oh.

  1106. Oh.

1107. No, I want to do this.

  1108. No, this is, no,

1109. I want to do this.

  1110. Yeah.

1111. It was kind of, okay.

  1112. Okay.

1113. I'll express an iteration of it.

  1114. So, I'll say, okay,

  1115. so like what is,

  1116. we'll say,

  1117. what's a big,

  1118. what's a big danger

  1119. that we'll say

1120. that the church can fall into

  1121. when it comes to,

  1122. we'll say specific,

  1123. just marriage.

  1124. Let's just say

1125. a danger to fall into

1126. when it comes to conceiving of it,

  1127. preaching it,

  1128. whatever.

  1129. We'll do that.

  1130. Okay.

  1131. So, I think,

  1132. so we'll,

  1133. I'll just,

  1134. I'll just pick one

1135. because there's all this stuff.

  1136. One is that,

1137. that second class citizen thing

  1138. that you were,

  1139. that you were,

  1140. that you were,

1141. that you were talking about before.

  1142. Because it's funny

  1143. when Paul,

  1144. when Paul is talking

  1145. to the Corinthians,

1146. when you get all that,

  1147. you know,

  1148. it's,

  1149. it's,

  1150. it's better to marry

  1151. than to burn

  1152. and all that,

  1153. all that,

1154. all that kind of stuff.

  1155. He's speaking to them

  1156. where marriage is seen

  1157. as a bad,

1158. seen as a bad thing.

  1159. It's like,

  1160. you just don't,

  1161. don't do it.

1162. To which his response is,

  1163. no,

  1164. it's a good thing.

1165. While I would like you all

  1166. to be single

1167. because then you could be like me

1168. and you could have this

  1169. undistracted devotion

  1170. to the Lord,

  1171. I understand that there,

  1172. that,

1173. that not everyone is gifted in that,

1174. that not everyone is gifted

  1175. in that way.

  1176. Christ essentially says that

  1177. in the parallel passage

  1178. in Matthew 19

1179. where he says that there are some,

1180. there are some who have been eunuchs

  1181. from birth,

1182. some who have been made,

1183. some who were made eunuchs

  1184. by men

1185. and some who have made themselves eunuchs

  1186. for the,

1187. for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.

  1188. But,

  1189. the thing is,

  1190. and some,

  1191. and something that I,

  1192. that I,

1193. that I wanted to emphasize here

  1194. is that

  1195. the single,

  1196. the single life

  1197. and the married life,

1198. both of them have their,

  1199. have their,

  1200. have their unique challenges

  1201. and both have,

1202. and both have unique benefits.

  1203. There are things that,

  1204. there are things that,

  1205. there are things that,

1206. are much easier for single people

  1207. than for married people.

1208. Things that are much easier

  1209. for married people

  1210. than for single people.

  1211. And so,

  1212. one of the things

  1213. that the church,

  1214. one of the ways

  1215. that the church

  1216. can live that out

1217. is by married people offering hospitality to single people

1218. and single people offering hospitality to married people.

1219. There's a capacity of time and flexibility that single people have

  1220. that married people don't.

1221. There are resources that married people have

1222. that single people don't have access to.

1223. And if we're to be truly, I mean, as the body of Christ,

1224. that's something that we should be willing to support one another in.

1225. And single people, pray for the marriages in the church.

1226. Because if this is meant to be an image of Christ in the church,

1227. this is something that requires constant prayer.

1228. And married people, pray for the single people in the congregation.

1229. Because there are deep, deep, deep, intense struggles

1230. that go on in the single person's mind.

1231. Even whether it's dealing with kind of unchecked,

1232. in some cases, just unchecked selfishness.

1233. Because when you're on your own, you know,

1234. I can do whatever I want in my apartment.

  1235. I don't know, like nobody knows.

1236. And so, but that's dangerous.

1237. And so there's a support in both arenas that needs to happen, I think.

  1238. Yeah.

  1239. Yeah.

  1240. Hi, Mindy.

1241. Why does Moses allow the Lord?

  1242. Why?

1243. Why does Moses allow the Lord?

  1244. Good.

  1245. Good, good, good.

1246. So the question is, it's a difference between

1247. what does Moses command and what does Moses permit?

1248. So the commandment is whoever divorces,

1249. like basically, like the commandment is never,

1250. there is never a command to divorce in scripture.

1251. Never a command to divorce.

1252. Never a command, if someone does this, divorce them.

  1253. No.

1254. The command is whoever divorces his wife

1255. must write her a certificate of divorce.

1256. Which is to say that it's an issue of justice.

1257. If you marry, if you marries,

1258. if a man were to marry a woman

1259. and then just put her out on the street,

1260. she would be utterly defenseless.

1261. The certificate of divorce would allow,

1262. would essentially allow her to remarry,

  1263. which is like, it's a safety,

  1264. it's a safety issue.

1265. And so one of, so that's kind of one of the,

1266. I think that's one of the things

1267. that Jesus was referring to when he says,

1268. he did this because of your hardness of heart.

1269. It was because it's like, why would you put,

1270. why would you, first of all,

1271. why would you divorce your wife is the idea.

1272. Because that's not what marriage was meant.

1273. Marriage was never meant to have this kind of thing.

1274. But the commandment to give a certificate of divorce

  1275. was specifically, you know,

  1276. to maintain that justice

1277. so that women wouldn't be, you know,

  1278. left out defenseless.

1279. But what Jesus is essentially doing here is he's,

  1280. I mean, he's showing us,

1281. he's showing us the way that it's supposed to be.

1282. And in that next part that we see about children,

1283. he's giving us how that's supposed to happen.

1284. He gives us the Holy Spirit

1285. so that this can be a reality.

  1286. And I think that's,

  1287. I think that's where,

1288. I think that's where we need to focus our attention.

  1289. Yeah.

1290. But then it said in Mark that

  1291. if you are divorced,

1292. you're not going to be there.

  1293. In other words,

  1294. if you're a certificate of divorce,

  1295. doesn't make a person safe

1296. by allowing them to marry

1297. and it has to be not.

  1298. Right.

  1299. So this is the,

1300. and this is him dealing with,

1301. there are a number of Jewish,

1302. there are a number of Jewish schools at the time,

1303. going back and forth about what this means,

  1304. who can divorce,

  1305. who can,

1306. all that kind of stuff.

1307. But if you look at just Jesus' response to the question,

  1308. where the question is,

1309. is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?

1310. It just seems that his answer,

1311. if you had to choose between yes or no,

1312. it just seems that his answer would be no.

  1313. In which case,

  1314. that,

  1315. that,

  1316. that,

  1317. this,

  1318. this is,

1319. this is not even a thing that he,

1320. that he wants Christians to even deal with.

  1321. The,

  1322. the answer,

  1323. the,

  1324. the question of the,

1325. the question of the certificate

  1326. was an issue.

  1327. I mean,

  1328. that was,

  1329. it was an,

  1330. it was an,

1331. it was an issue for the Jewish people at the time.

  1332. And,

  1333. and it was,

1334. let me think of the best.

  1335. Yeah,

  1336. I think that,

  1337. I,

  1338. I,

  1339. I mean,

1340. I really think the best,

  1341. I think,

1342. I really think the best way to approach that is just that.

  1343. Christ,

1344. Christ in his statement is saying,

1345. this is not the way,

1346. this is not the way that it's been,

1347. that that it's been meant to,

1348. that it's been meant to be.

  1349. All,

1350. all those things that he was saying about a certificate of divorce

1351. and all those things were allowances

  1352. because of their,

1353. because of their hardness of heart.

  1354. But now,

  1355. in the church,

  1356. he's,

  1357. he's,

1358. and now that he's been resurrected,

  1359. ascended,

  1360. and sent the,

1361. and sent the Holy Spirit,

  1362. there's a new,

1363. there's a new capacity for us to be able to do

  1364. what he's,

1365. what he's commanded us to do.

  1366. So.

  1367. Okay.

  1368. And,

  1369. and I'll be,

  1370. I'll be around.

1371. We can still continue this conversation.

  1372. Thanks,

  1373. guys.

  1374. Bye.

  1375. Thank you.

  1376. Thank you.
