  1. This morning we're looking at Hebrews chapter 7 verses 20 through 28.

    Hebrews 7:20–28

  2. If you're looking in one of the Pew Bibles, that is page 1004.

  3. We are over halfway through February.

  4. That means that spring is only one month and four days away.

  5. Even though that may seem hard to believe, it will come.

  6. Some of faith is believing what we don't currently see, but what we have reliable reasons to know will occur in the future.

  7. Hebrews 7, starting at verse 20.

  8. And it was not without an oath.

  9. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath.

  10. But this one was made a priest with an oath.

  11. By the one who said to him,

  12. The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind.

  13. You are a priest forever.

  14. This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

  15. The former priests were many in number.

  16. Because they were prevented by death from continuing in office.

  17. But he holds his priesthood permanently.

  18. Because he continues forever.

  19. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost.

  20. Those who draw near to God through him.

  21. Since he always lives to make intercession for them.

  22. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest.

  23. Holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

  24. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily.

  25. First for his own sins, and then for those of the people.

  26. Since he did this once for all, when he offered himself.

  27. For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests.

  28. But the word of the oath, which came later than the law,

  29. Appoints a son, who has been made perfect forever.

  30. I've never particularly enjoyed going to the doctor.

  31. But there have been a couple of times in my life when I am very thankful that I did.

  32. One of those times was just about a year ago, last February.

  33. I'd been in bed for two and a half days with a fever and stomach pain.

  34. It felt sort of like the flu, but I wasn't throwing up.

  35. And it just felt different.

  36. I felt like it wasn't something I had had quite ever the same before.

  37. So I called the doctor's office on a Thursday morning.

  38. Got the last appointment on a Thursday afternoon.

  39. Long story short, I was diagnosed with possible appendicitis.

  40. I was sent to the hospital that night.

  41. A CAT scan revealed my appendix had actually ruptured.

  42. And if your appendix ruptures and you don't get any medical treatment, you could possibly die.

  43. So it's quite serious.

  44. The next day, Friday and Saturday, February 8 and 9, I think, of last year, was Blizzard Nemo.

  45. Which, if you were in New Haven last year, you certainly remember that.

  46. New Haven received three feet of snow in 24 hours, and the city was basically shut down for five days.

  47. So I watched the snow come down from my hospital bed on the fifth floor of St. Raphael's Hospital.

  48. While my wife, Jane, and our two young children, Nathan and Grace, were confined in our house for three days because our street wasn't plowed.

  49. And there was no way to get out.

  50. Now, looking back, I'm thankful for a lot of things.

  51. Throughout the whole process, I was well taken care of by the doctors and hospital staff and nurses of various kinds.

  52. But I'm also thankful that I made it.

  53. And that I made it to the doctors that Thursday afternoon, because if I didn't go then, then I might not have made it before the blizzard began.

  54. And then who knows what I would have done with a ruptured appendix for three days in a blizzard.

  55. Once I left, thankfully, most of the bill was covered by our health insurance.

  56. Without that, we would still be in debt.

  57. Now, when you face real problems that you can't fix yourself, it makes a big difference whether or not you are covered, as we say.

  58. If you have distressing physical symptoms and you don't know what's causing them, or you do know what's causing them and you know it's pretty serious,

  59. in our society, it makes a big difference if you're covered by health insurance.

  60. If you're covered by a good insurance policy, you feel the freedom to go see a doctor, pursue a diagnosis, and if necessary, get the treatment you need.

  61. If you're not, it's possible that you might be tempted to deny the problem or delay getting treatment,

  62. until, at least in my case, it might have been too late.

  63. But the same is true, not only when we face problems that are bigger than ourself,

  64. but also when we face a mission that is bigger than ourself.

  65. For example, if you want to start a medical practice to help all the rest of us when we get sick.

  66. Or the same example could apply if you're wanting to open a restaurant,

  67. or revitalize a troubled neighborhood,

  68. or rebuild a troubled marriage,

  69. or train for the Olympics.

  70. Any mission that is bigger than you can sustain by yourself,

  71. you need to have resources outside yourself.

  72. You need to have someone who's going to stand behind you and cover you,

  73. as you go forward in your mission.

  74. Somebody who's maybe going to loan you some money,

  75. so you can rent a building,

  76. and buy equipment,

  77. and hire staff,

  78. and advertise in the community,

  79. and defend yourself against malpractice suits,

  80. and all the other things that doctors have to consider.

  81. If you're covered with the resources and the support that you need,

  82. on an ongoing basis,

  83. not only financially,

  84. but also personally,

  85. it makes all the difference.

  86. If you aren't covered,

  87. if you don't have what you need,

  88. you'll tend to be either crippled by anxious pessimism,

  89. or blinded by naive optimism.

  90. Nothing's going to go wrong.

  91. Ever.

  92. But if you are covered,

  93. if you know that someone is standing behind you,

  94. going before you,

  95. protecting you from the dangers that you see,

  96. as well as the dangers that you can't see,

  97. you can go forward with freedom and confidence in your mission.

  98. Now, what this morning's passage is telling us,

  99. is that in our most difficult problems,

  100. and in our most important missions,

  101. there is one person who can cover us,

  102. like no one else.

  103. At the heart of this passage is verse 25,

  104. which says,

  105. consequently,

  106. he, Jesus,

  107. is able to save to the uttermost

  108. those who draw near to God through him,

  109. because he always lives

  110. to make intercession for them.

  111. In other words,

  112. if you approach God through Jesus,

  113. you are covered,

  114. completely and forever,

  115. to the uttermost,

  116. without qualifications or limitations or exclusions.

  117. Now, as we look into this verse,

  118. and this passage as a whole,

  119. we'll see three things.

  120. First, why do we need to be covered?

  121. Second, why Jesus is able to cover us,

  122. and third, how he covers us continually.

  123. So first, why we need to be covered by Jesus.

  124. Now, the assumption of this passage

  125. is that we need to be covered.

  126. That every one of us is facing great spiritual dangers

  127. that we cannot defend ourselves against.

  128. Problems that we cannot fix on our own.

  129. Verse 25 says,

  130. Jesus is able to save us.

  131. And it presents that as good news,

  132. but that only makes sense

  133. if there's actually something

  134. that we need to be saved from.

  135. You know, if you told me today

  136. that I need to spend the next month of my life

  137. in the hospital,

  138. being treated by doctors,

  139. my immediate reaction would be annoyance.

  140. I don't want to spend the next month of my life

  141. in the hospital.

  142. I want to be home with my family,

  143. and here at the church,

  144. and out in the community,

  145. and free to do what I want to do.

  146. But if you told me,

  147. and you really knew,

  148. that I needed surgery tomorrow

  149. to save my life,

  150. and the doctors could do it tomorrow,

  151. but I'd have to stay in the hospital

  152. recovering for a month,

  153. then I would gladly do it.

  154. I'd embrace every single day

  155. that I was in the hospital

  156. as a precious gift,

  157. and I would live the rest of my life

  158. knowing that I had been rescued.

  159. You see, it's basically the same way

  160. with the Christian faith.

  161. If you believe that you're basically okay,

  162. and you don't need any outside help,

  163. Christianity will feel like

  164. an annoying imposition.

  165. Right?

  166. Like the new healthcare reform law feels

  167. to a person

  168. if you don't have any interest

  169. in buying health insurance.

  170. You feel like,

  171. I'm perfectly fine without it.

  172. I don't need it.

  173. Well, why is there this law?

  174. Right?

  175. It feels constricting

  176. and has all these rules

  177. with penalties attached

  178. that infringe upon your freedom.

  179. And Christianity will feel the same way.

  180. Or at best,

  181. Christianity will be

  182. an interesting enrichment activity,

  183. a hobby to fill your time

  184. until you find something better to do

  185. on Sunday mornings.

  186. But you know,

  187. according to the Bible,

  188. every one of us

  189. is desperately in need

  190. of spiritual help.

  191. even if we don't realize it.

  192. The prophet Jeremiah said,

  193. the human heart

  194. is deceitful above all things

  195. and desperately sick.

  196. In other words,

  197. we're infected

  198. with a deadly virus.

  199. But one of the effects

  200. of this virus

  201. is to make us numb

  202. so that we don't recognize

  203. its symptoms.

  204. And so especially

  205. when our circumstances

  206. are going well,

  207. we may feel

  208. very self-sufficient.

  209. We might not feel

  210. a great need for God.

  211. But our present feelings

  212. and our self-assessments

  213. are not always

  214. a reliable indicator

  215. of our spiritual condition.

  216. You know,

  217. when I was single,

  218. I thought that I was

  219. generally a selfless

  220. and servant-hearted person.

  221. And then I got married.

  222. And now there's at least

  223. one person in the world

  224. who knows otherwise.

  225. The experience of marriage

  226. has shown me

  227. my self-centeredness

  228. and my self-defensiveness

  229. in ways that I wasn't

  230. previously aware of.

  231. It's not that marriage

  232. made me a different person.

  233. It just showed me

  234. aspects of who I was

  235. that I hadn't

  236. seen before.

  237. Sometimes when life,

  238. or sometimes another thing

  239. that can do that

  240. is when life doesn't go

  241. the way that we hope.

  242. we become more aware

  243. of our fallen

  244. and needy human condition

  245. more clearly than before.

  246. You know,

  247. think about the things

  248. that make your life work

  249. on a day-to-day basis,

  250. that hold your life together,

  251. that give you stability.

  252. Physical health,

  253. mental capabilities,

  254. social connections,

  255. a job,

  256. a place to live,

  257. a relationship,

  258. your good reputation.

  259. And then imagine

  260. if over the next year,

  261. just two or three

  262. of those things

  263. were removed

  264. or seriously damaged.

  265. On most Wednesdays,

  266. I spend time talking

  267. with people

  268. at the Columbus House

  269. homeless shelter.

  270. And sometimes,

  271. I'll ask people,

  272. what brought you here?

  273. Now, that's never

  274. the first question I ask.

  275. But as I get to know

  276. people better

  277. and they open up,

  278. sometimes I will.

  279. If it seems like

  280. they're willing

  281. to share about things.

  282. And many people

  283. have said to me,

  284. I never expected

  285. to be here.

  286. I grew up in the suburbs,

  287. a nice suburb.

  288. My wife and I

  289. had two cars.

  290. I was going to college.

  291. I was a mother of three.

  292. I had a thriving business

  293. and I was earning good money.

  294. And then somehow,

  295. over time,

  296. my life fell apart

  297. and here I am.

  298. Now, if you've been through

  299. a traumatic event

  300. or a major loss,

  301. you know deep inside

  302. how vulnerable we are

  303. at any time

  304. to changing circumstances,

  305. some of which are totally

  306. beyond our control

  307. and some of which we provoke

  308. through our own foolish tendencies.

  309. But you know,

  310. this isn't only the experience

  311. of someone

  312. who's become homeless

  313. or experienced

  314. a major loss.

  315. A few months ago,

  316. I received an email

  317. from a guy who I had known

  318. when he was in college.

  319. And he gave me permission

  320. to share this.

  321. He graduated from

  322. a top-tier college.

  323. He moved to New York,

  324. found a high-paying job.

  325. He's been very successful

  326. in his field.

  327. But he wrote this.

  328. This email came to me

  329. completely out of the blue.

  330. He hadn't been in touch

  331. for a couple years.

  332. He said,

  333. I really enjoy my current job.

  334. I love the people I work with.

  335. Unlike my last job,

  336. I also have time.

  337. I have time to spend

  338. with family and friends

  339. and to pursue other things

  340. I enjoy.

  341. But I feel very strongly

  342. that something is missing.

  343. I was raised Catholic.

  344. The way I was taught growing up,

  345. you are what you do.

  346. You will ultimately be judged

  347. by the sum of your actions,

  348. good and bad.

  349. And that became the source

  350. of my self-worth.

  351. Until approximately

  352. junior year in college,

  353. my sense of self-worth

  354. was tied to a few

  355. specific things.

  356. Athletic performance,

  357. academic performance,

  358. and my relationship

  359. with the girl I had been

  360. seeing for some time.

  361. One by one,

  362. all of those things

  363. went downhill.

  364. Some of it was my fault,

  365. but not all of it.

  366. My life had essentially

  367. been one big victory lap

  368. up until that point.

  369. I had always tried

  370. to do right by others,

  371. and I thought that good things

  372. happened to me

  373. because of that.

  374. And now I did not understand

  375. and couldn't accept

  376. what was now happening.

  377. Nothing was going my way.

  378. I felt lied to.

  379. I was angry

  380. and turned away

  381. from the Catholic Church

  382. and religion in general.

  383. Embraced the philosophy

  384. of Ayn Rand.

  385. But I felt so strangely

  386. unfulfilled ever since.

  387. Prestigious job,

  388. lots of money,

  389. expensive clothes,

  390. nice apartment.

  391. None of it means

  392. very much to me.

  393. And none of it

  394. has substituted

  395. for whatever it was

  396. I was missing.

  397. You see,

  398. whether your life

  399. has totally fallen apart

  400. and you're forced

  401. to depend on others

  402. for your basic needs,

  403. or whether you

  404. achieve everything

  405. that you hoped

  406. and realize

  407. that that still

  408. isn't enough,

  409. sometimes God uses

  410. the circumstances

  411. of our lives

  412. to awaken us

  413. to our spiritual need

  414. that we cannot

  415. fix on our own.

  416. our need for something

  417. outside ourselves.

  418. And as we get older,

  419. the signs alerting us

  420. to our own dependence

  421. only increase in frequency

  422. because the older we get,

  423. the closer we come

  424. to the one reality

  425. that is 100% sure

  426. for every one of us,

  427. which is death.

  428. When every one of the things

  429. that hold our life together

  430. and that we hold dear

  431. will finally be taken

  432. out of our hands

  433. and everything

  434. that held us together

  435. will fall apart.

  436. Every one of us

  437. will face death alone.

  438. We can take nothing

  439. and no one with us.

  440. And Hebrews 9 says

  441. it is appointed

  442. for human beings

  443. to die once

  444. and after that

  445. comes judgment

  446. when each one of us

  447. will give an account

  448. of our lives

  449. to a holy

  450. and pure God

  451. whose presence

  452. is like a consuming fire.

  453. And on that day

  454. there will be nowhere

  455. to hide.

  456. All our illusions

  457. about ourselves

  458. and our own self-sufficiency

  459. will disappear

  460. in the blazing light

  461. of God's all-knowing,

  462. all-searching,

  463. all-revealing gaze.

  464. And when we come

  465. into the holy presence

  466. of God,

  467. we will recognize ourselves

  468. to be sinners.

  469. Maybe for the first time

  470. we will recognize

  471. that we rightly deserve

  472. to be forever excluded

  473. from His presence.

  474. And on that day

  475. there will be only one person

  476. who can help us

  477. in any way at all.

  478. Now the good news

  479. of this passage

  480. and the point

  481. of this passage

  482. is that unlike anyone else,

  483. Jesus Christ

  484. is able

  485. to cover us.

  486. He's able

  487. to save us

  488. to the uttermost.

  489. That means completely

  490. and forever

  491. in this life

  492. and in the life to come.

  493. for all who draw near

  494. to God

  495. through Him.

  496. And you know,

  497. when it says

  498. Jesus is able

  499. to save us completely,

  500. it's not merely

  501. presenting

  502. a hypothetical possibility.

  503. It's not saying

  504. Jesus might

  505. possibly save you

  506. if you come to Him.

  507. It's saying

  508. He is powerful

  509. to save

  510. completely

  511. those who come to God

  512. through Him.

  513. The same phrase

  514. is used

  515. three other times

  516. in Hebrews

  517. to describe

  518. the work of Jesus

  519. or God.

  520. In chapter 2,

  521. verse 18,

  522. it says Jesus is able

  523. to help

  524. those who are being

  525. tempted

  526. and He does.

  527. 4.15 says

  528. Jesus is able

  529. to sympathize

  530. with us

  531. in our weakness.

  532. Chapter 5,

  533. verse 7 says

  534. God was able

  535. to save

  536. Jesus from death

  537. and He did

  538. in the resurrection.

  539. And the point is

  540. Jesus is powerfully

  541. able to save us

  542. and He has proved

  543. His willingness

  544. to do so

  545. for everyone

  546. who draws near

  547. to God

  548. through Him.

  549. Unlike anyone else,

  550. He is qualified

  551. to cover us

  552. completely

  553. and forever.

  554. Now you might ask

  555. what makes Jesus

  556. able to do this?

  557. How can I know

  558. that He will?

  559. How can I have

  560. confidence

  561. to trust

  562. that this isn't

  563. just an empty promise

  564. like all the other

  565. empty promises

  566. out there in the world?

  567. Well, this passage

  568. gives three reasons

  569. why Jesus is able

  570. to save us.

  571. Verse 20-22,

  572. it says that God

  573. Himself is guaranteed

  574. that Jesus is able

  575. to save us.

  576. In last week's passage

  577. we saw how the ceremonial

  578. law of the Old Testament

  579. was set aside.

  580. Verse 18-19 says

  581. because it was weak

  582. and useless.

  583. And in the person

  584. of Jesus,

  585. God had introduced

  586. a better hope.

  587. But you know,

  588. the people who first

  589. read this letter

  590. were most likely

  591. Jewish Christians

  592. who had lived

  593. most of their lives

  594. under the Old Testament

  595. law.

  596. And for them,

  597. this would have felt

  598. tremendously destabilizing.

  599. Right?

  600. God Himself

  601. had given Moses

  602. the law

  603. at Mount Sinai

  604. and instructed him

  605. to build the tabernacle

  606. and establish the priesthood

  607. in the line of Aaron.

  608. And now,

  609. they might wonder,

  610. wait a minute,

  611. God is doing away

  612. with what He Himself

  613. established?

  614. If that is so,

  615. how can we really trust

  616. that anything God says

  617. is His final word?

  618. Maybe Jesus is just

  619. a precursor

  620. to another prophet

  621. to come.

  622. Maybe we should

  623. keep our eyes out

  624. for something else

  625. that God might send

  626. to us.

  627. Maybe it's like

  628. an operating system upgrade

  629. and Jesus is just

  630. one of many

  631. forthcoming upgrades

  632. to your Mac OS

  633. or your Windows

  634. operating system.

  635. But the author of Hebrews

  636. is saying no.

  637. He says,

  638. when you read

  639. the Old Testament

  640. carefully,

  641. it points forward

  642. to something greater

  643. than itself.

  644. And it's an unfinished story

  645. crying out

  646. for a lasting resolution

  647. and Jesus is

  648. that lasting,

  649. eternal resolution.

  650. And He will not

  651. be replaced.

  652. God commanded Aaron

  653. and his sons

  654. to be priests

  655. in the temple

  656. but there was never

  657. any oath involved.

  658. In other words,

  659. there was never a sign

  660. that it was absolutely

  661. unchangeable

  662. and would never

  663. point forward

  664. to anything else.

  665. God never swore

  666. an oath to them.

  667. By contrast,

  668. in this verse

  669. that He quotes

  670. from Psalm 110

  671. which talks about

  672. a different kind

  673. of priest,

  674. not in the order

  675. of Aaron

  676. but in the order

  677. of Melchizedek,

  678. God did swear an oath.

  679. So the point is,

  680. Jesus is this priest

  681. whom God has guaranteed

  682. will be there forever.

  683. So God has guaranteed

  684. that Jesus is able

  685. to save us.

  686. That's the first reason.

  687. The second reason

  688. is because Jesus lives

  689. forever.

  690. This is verse 23 and 24.

  691. The second contrast,

  692. the former priests

  693. were many

  694. and they were many

  695. because they all died.

  696. But Jesus is the one

  697. who lives forever.

  698. And God has guaranteed

  699. that Jesus is able

  700. to save us

  701. and He has demonstrated

  702. that by raising Jesus

  703. from the dead.

  704. You know,

  705. if you are not sure,

  706. if you doubt

  707. that Jesus is powerful

  708. and able to save,

  709. consider the fact

  710. of Jesus' resurrection.

  711. If you doubt

  712. that it really happened,

  713. look into the historical evidence.

  714. It's quite strong.

  715. There's a booklet

  716. on the back table.

  717. If you want to read

  718. something short

  719. or if you want to read

  720. something long,

  721. you can read N.T. Wright's

  722. 800-page book,

  723. The Resurrection

  724. of the Son of God,

  725. which is a powerful case

  726. by a leading scholar

  727. for the bodily resurrection

  728. of Jesus.

  729. You know,

  730. one of the most remarkable

  731. aspects of the gospel accounts

  732. about the empty tomb

  733. is that the first witnesses

  734. were women.

  735. Now, at that time,

  736. women were not allowed

  737. to be legal witnesses

  738. in either Jewish courts

  739. or Roman courts.

  740. They were seen as,

  741. there was one writer

  742. who said,

  743. women are inferior to men

  744. in every way.

  745. And that was just

  746. a common statement.

  747. Nobody really challenged

  748. him on that.

  749. So if you were going

  750. to make up a story

  751. back then

  752. that somebody had been

  753. raised from the dead

  754. and you wanted people

  755. to believe it,

  756. you wouldn't make up

  757. this detail that women

  758. were the first witnesses

  759. as all the gospels do

  760. unless it really happened

  761. that way.

  762. You see,

  763. you would never make that up

  764. back then in that context

  765. unless that's how

  766. it really happened.

  767. And they really went

  768. to the tomb

  769. and it was really empty

  770. and Jesus had really risen.

  771. You see,

  772. the early Christians

  773. were confident

  774. in the resurrection

  775. of Jesus

  776. because they were convinced

  777. by reliable witnesses,

  778. by women and men

  779. who testified

  780. that it really happened.

  781. Even the early opponents

  782. of Christianity

  783. admitted that the tomb

  784. was empty.

  785. Nobody claimed

  786. that Jesus' body

  787. was still there.

  788. That would have been

  789. the easiest way

  790. to disprove it.

  791. You could go on and on.

  792. But the more you look

  793. into it,

  794. the historical evidence

  795. is strong,

  796. pointing to the reality

  797. of Jesus' resurrection.

  798. And because Jesus

  799. lives forever,

  800. we can be confident

  801. that he is able

  802. to save us

  803. forever,

  804. unlike anyone else.

  805. So God has guaranteed it.

  806. Jesus lives forever.

  807. And third,

  808. the third reason

  809. that we see

  810. that Jesus is able

  811. to save

  812. is that he is

  813. our exalted brother.

  814. This is verse 26

  815. through 28.

  816. Jesus wasn't only

  817. raised from the dead

  818. to live on earth,

  819. he was exalted

  820. to the right hand

  821. of God

  822. in heaven,

  823. the position

  824. of ultimate authority

  825. over everything

  826. in the universe.

  827. Verse 26 and 28

  828. describes Jesus

  829. as fully identified

  830. with God

  831. in his moral perfection,

  832. holy,

  833. innocent,

  834. unstained,

  835. separated from sinners,

  836. the son who has been

  837. made perfect

  838. forever.

  839. And yet,

  840. verse 27 says

  841. he is fully identified

  842. with us

  843. as our brother,

  844. that he offered himself

  845. up as a sacrifice

  846. on behalf of sinful people

  847. once for all.

  848. You see,

  849. Jesus is perfectly qualified

  850. to stand before

  851. a holy God

  852. because he is morally pure

  853. and without blemish,

  854. unlike anyone else.

  855. And he is perfectly qualified,

  856. unlike the angels

  857. or other heavenly beings,

  858. he is perfectly qualified

  859. to represent us

  860. because he took on

  861. our human nature.

  862. And on the cross,

  863. he paid the price

  864. to cover us

  865. completely and forever,

  866. to pay the debt

  867. that we owed

  868. for our sin.

  869. And when Jesus

  870. ascended back into heaven,

  871. you know,

  872. he didn't just

  873. leave his human nature

  874. behind on earth.

  875. He carried it with him

  876. into the very presence

  877. of God.

  878. And so Jesus stands today

  879. in the very presence

  880. of God,

  881. not only as the eternal

  882. Son of God,

  883. but also as

  884. our brother,

  885. our fellow human being.

  886. And him standing

  887. in God's presence

  888. is a sign

  889. that he is perfectly

  890. and powerfully

  891. able to save us

  892. with whom he identified

  893. and bring us

  894. with him

  895. into God's presence

  896. forever.

  897. Jesus is able

  898. to save us

  899. completely

  900. and forever.

  901. Well, finally,

  902. this passage describes

  903. how Jesus continually

  904. carries out

  905. his work

  906. of covering us,

  907. of saving us.

  908. Verse 25 says,

  909. he always lives

  910. to make intercession

  911. for us.

  912. Now, to intercede

  913. for someone

  914. means to approach

  915. an authority figure

  916. with an appeal

  917. or a request

  918. on behalf

  919. of someone else.

  920. So what this verse

  921. is saying is that

  922. Jesus,

  923. our exalted brother,

  924. our ever-living Savior

  925. and Lord,

  926. is continually

  927. approaching God the Father

  928. with requests

  929. and appeals

  930. on our behalf.

  931. Now, you might wonder,

  932. what does that look like?

  933. Well, you know,

  934. we can actually get a clue

  935. of what that looks like,

  936. even though we can't

  937. look into heaven

  938. directly

  939. and hear what Jesus

  940. is saying to God the Father.

  941. But when you read

  942. in the Gospels,

  943. there's some

  944. records of the prayers

  945. of Jesus

  946. that he prayed

  947. for his disciples.

  948. So Luke 22,

  949. 31 and 32,

  950. Jesus says to Peter,

  951. he says,

  952. Simon,

  953. Simon,

  954. behold,

  955. Satan demanded

  956. to have you.

  957. Satan was out

  958. to get you.

  959. He wanted to sift you

  960. like wheat.

  961. But I have prayed

  962. for you

  963. that your faith

  964. may not fail.

  965. And when you have

  966. turned back,

  967. strengthen your brothers.

  968. Jesus prays for us

  969. that our faith

  970. in him

  971. might not fail.

  972. because it's not

  973. something that we

  974. can sustain on our own.

  975. He prays to God

  976. the Father

  977. that our faith

  978. would not fail.

  979. And when we do

  980. stumble

  981. and fall

  982. as Peter did

  983. when he denied Jesus

  984. that very night,

  985. Jesus continues

  986. to intercede

  987. for us

  988. that we might

  989. not only turn

  990. back to him,

  991. but then strengthen

  992. our brothers

  993. and sisters.

  994. John 17,

  995. 15,

  996. Jesus prayed

  997. for his disciples.

  998. He said,

  999. I do not ask

  1000. that you take them

  1001. out of the world,

1002. but that you keep them

  1003. from the evil one.

  1004. Sanctify them

  1005. in the truth.

  1006. Your word

  1007. is truth.

  1008. Jesus does not

  1009. promise

  1010. to shield us

  1011. from the harsh realities

  1012. of life

  1013. in this world.

  1014. Jesus does not pray

  1015. that nothing bad

  1016. would ever happen

  1017. to us.

  1018. But he does pray

1019. that in all the things

  1020. that happen to us

1021. that we would be kept

  1022. from the evil one.

  1023. That even through

  1024. our greatest trials

  1025. and our hardest temptations

1026. that we would be set apart

  1027. for holy service

  1028. to God.

  1029. That's what sanctify

  1030. means.

  1031. To be set apart

  1032. for a holy purpose

  1033. by the truth

  1034. of his word.

  1035. Perhaps the most famous

  1036. prayer of Jesus

1037. is what we now call

  1038. the Lord's Prayer

  1039. in Luke 11.

  1040. And actually,

  1041. the context of that

  1042. is Jesus was praying.

  1043. And back then,

  1044. most people

  1045. prayed out loud

  1046. a little more

  1047. than we do today.

  1048. If you think

  1049. if you find somebody

  1050. praying,

  1051. you might expect

  1052. that they're praying

  1053. quietly.

  1054. But it's probably

  1055. Jesus was praying

  1056. out loud.

  1057. His disciples heard him

1058. and they said to him,

1059. Lord, teach us to pray.

1060. And then he taught them

1061. based on what he was praying.

1062. And then the second half

  1063. of the Lord's Prayer,

  1064. he makes three requests

  1065. on our behalf.

  1066. He says,

  1067. give us each day

  1068. our daily bread.

  1069. He's praying for what

1070. that we would be provided

  1071. with what we need

  1072. on a day-to-day basis.

  1073. Second, he says,

  1074. forgive us our sins.

  1075. Now clearly,

  1076. Jesus isn't praying

  1077. for himself there.

  1078. Right?

  1079. But even when he's

  1080. on earth,

  1081. Jesus is already

1082. praying to God the Father

  1083. that our sins

  1084. would be forgiven.

  1085. And third,

  1086. lead us not

  1087. into temptation.

  1088. Even while Jesus

  1089. was on earth,

  1090. he was already

  1091. praying for his disciples

  1092. before the Father.

  1093. And how much more

1094. since he is in heaven,

  1095. since he has completed

1096. the work of the cross,

  1097. which paid the price

  1098. for our forgiveness

  1099. and for everything else

  1100. that we need.

  1101. So in summary,

1102. what does Jesus pray for?

  1103. Well, Peter O'Brien,

  1104. a commentator on Hebrews,

  1105. summarizes it this way.

  1106. He says,

  1107. Jesus prays for anything

  1108. and everything

  1109. that might prevent us

  1110. from receiving

  1111. the final salvation

1112. that he has won for us

  1113. at the cross.

  1114. In other words,

  1115. through Jesus dying

  1116. on the cross

  1117. once for all,

  1118. he has accomplished

  1119. our redemption.

  1120. And through his

  1121. continual intercession

  1122. on our behalf,

  1123. he applies to us

  1124. all the benefits

  1125. that he has won

  1126. and paid for

  1127. in his death

  1128. and resurrection.

  1129. You see,

  1130. Jesus has not only

  1131. saved us by dying

  1132. on the cross

  1133. in the past,

1134. he continues to save us

  1135. by interceding

1136. for us in the present.

  1137. And one day,

  1138. Hebrews 9, 28,

  1139. says he will appear

  1140. a second time

  1141. to save those

  1142. who are eagerly

  1143. waiting for him.

  1144. In other words,

  1145. he has saved us

  1146. by his death

  1147. on the cross

  1148. in the past,

1149. he continues to save us

  1150. in the present

1151. and he will one day

  1152. bring us to glory

  1153. and complete that.

  1154. That's what the

  1155. Romans 8 passage

  1156. that Kyle read

  1157. earlier this morning

  1158. is all about.

  1159. Called,

  1160. justified,

  1161. sanctified,

  1162. glorified.

  1163. He doesn't miss anything.

  1164. He carries us

  1165. all the way through.

1166. So if you approach God

  1167. through Jesus,

  1168. Jesus says,

  1169. I've got you covered

  1170. completely and forever.

  1171. I've forgiven you

  1172. of your past.

  1173. I'm upholding you

  1174. in the present

1175. and I hold your future

  1176. in my hands.

  1177. That's what it means

  1178. that he makes intercession

  1179. for us.

  1180. Finally,

  1181. if you know

  1182. that you're covered

  1183. by Jesus,

  1184. let me end with

  1185. three brief applications.

  1186. Number one,

  1187. if you know

  1188. that you're covered

  1189. by Jesus,

  1190. we can honestly

  1191. deal with

  1192. and face

  1193. our spiritual

  1194. sicknesses,

  1195. our besetting sins.

  1196. We don't need

  1197. to live in denial

  1198. or fear

  1199. that our problems

  1200. will be too great

  1201. to handle

  1202. or too much

  1203. for us

  1204. to pay for.

  1205. We can examine

  1206. our own hearts.

  1207. We can even receive

  1208. critical feedback

  1209. from others

  1210. without becoming

  1211. angry and defensive

  1212. because we have

  1213. a remedy

  1214. that is available

  1215. to us.

  1216. We have free access

  1217. to our great physician

  1218. who is already seen

  1219. into the depth

  1220. of our sin-sick heart

  1221. and paid the price

  1222. to bring us

  1223. the healing

  1224. and forgiveness

  1225. that we need

  1226. so we can face

  1227. our spiritual sicknesses,

  1228. our sin.

  1229. Second,

  1230. we can go forth

  1231. confidently

  1232. into the mission

  1233. to which God

  1234. has called us.

  1235. When Jesus prayed

1236. for all who had come

  1237. to believe in him,

  1238. you know,

  1239. surprisingly,

  1240. perhaps,

  1241. he didn't only pray

  1242. about our problems.

  1243. Sometimes our problems

  1244. themselves can seem

  1245. totally overwhelming

  1246. and especially

  1247. when we see them

  1248. in the light

  1249. of God's presence

  1250. but Jesus not only

  1251. prayed about our problems,

1252. he prayed about our mission.

1253. He prayed for his disciples

1254. that we might be one,

1255. that they may all be one,

  1256. just as you, Father,

  1257. are in me

  1258. and I in you,

1259. that they may also be in us

  1260. so that the world

  1261. may believe

1262. that you have sent me.

1263. So for those of you

  1264. who are involved

  1265. in,

  1266. for one example,

  1267. for those of you

  1268. who are involved

  1269. in the church plan

  1270. in New London,

  1271. Jesus is interceding

  1272. for you

1273. that you may be united

  1274. with one another,

  1275. that you may enjoy

  1276. rich fellowship

1277. with Jesus and the Father

1278. and that you may declare

  1279. the unsearchable riches

  1280. of Jesus

  1281. to New London

  1282. and that people

1283. in that part of the world

  1284. would come to believe

  1285. and love Jesus

  1286. as a result.

  1287. And you know what?

  1288. That's already happening

  1289. because Jesus has already

  1290. been interceding

  1291. on your behalf.

  1292. And so go forward

1293. and continue in your mission

  1294. prayerfully and humbly

  1295. but also boldly.

  1296. For those of us

1297. who are here in New Haven

1298. and if you're not planning

1299. to move to New London,

  1300. the same thing applies

  1301. to the mission

1302. that God has given us

  1303. here in New Haven.

1304. He has brought us together

1305. as one body in Christ

  1306. and Jesus is constantly

  1307. interceding for us

  1308. that we might be

  1309. united to declare

  1310. to the world

  1311. how awesome He is

  1312. and that others

  1313. might come to believe

  1314. in Him.

  1315. So go forward

  1316. in the mission

1317. that God has given you

  1318. with confidence.

  1319. Third,

  1320. finally,

  1321. in all the trials

  1322. and temptations

  1323. that we face,

  1324. be encouraged.

  1325. because even

  1326. if you don't know

  1327. what to pray

  1328. or how to pray

1329. or if you feel like

  1330. your prayer life

  1331. is weak,

  1332. you have someone

  1333. who is praying

  1334. for you.

  1335. You have Jesus

  1336. who is praying

  1337. for you.

  1338. Louis Burkhoff

  1339. wrote this.

  1340. He said,

1341. that it is a comforting

  1342. thought

  1343. that Christ

  1344. is praying for us,

  1345. that He is presenting

  1346. to the Father

  1347. those spiritual needs

  1348. which were not present

  1349. to our minds,

  1350. which we often neglect

1351. to include in our prayers,

  1352. and that He prays

  1353. for our protection

  1354. against the dangers

1355. of which we are not

  1356. even conscious

  1357. and against the enemies

  1358. which threaten us

1359. though we do not notice it.

  1360. He is praying

  1361. that our faith

  1362. may not fail

1363. and that we may come out

  1364. victoriously

  1365. in the end.

  1366. So be encouraged.

  1367. Let's pray.

  1368. Lord Jesus,

  1369. we thank You

  1370. this morning

  1371. that You are able

  1372. to save us.

  1373. And we thank You

  1374. that You are

  1375. continually carrying out

  1376. that work

  1377. by interceding for us

  1378. at the right hand

  1379. of God the Father.

  1380. That we may know

  1381. that You may apply

  1382. to us all

  1383. of the benefits

  1384. that You purchased

  1385. for us

  1386. in Your death

  1387. on the cross.

  1388. Lord,

  1389. this morning

  1390. we join together

  1391. in the prayer

  1392. that You taught us

  1393. to pray

  1394. that reminds us

  1395. of how You are

  1396. praying for us.

  1397. Our Father,

  1398. who art in heaven,

  1399. hallowed be Thy name.

  1400. Thy kingdom come,

  1401. Thy will be done

  1402. on earth

1403. as it is in heaven.

  1404. Give us this day

  1405. our daily bread.

  1406. Forgive us

  1407. our trespasses

  1408. as we forgive those

  1409. who trespass against us.

  1410. Lead us not

  1411. into temptation,

  1412. but deliver us

  1413. from evil.

1414. For Thine is the kingdom

  1415. and the power

  1416. and the glory

  1417. forever.

  1418. Amen.

  1419. Amen.

  1420. As the music team

  1421. comes forward,

  1422. we're going to

  1423. join together

  1424. in one last song

  1425. that speaks of Christ

  1426. as interceding

  1427. for us

  1428. before the throne

  1429. of God above.
