  1. I'll just open this up by praying for us tonight.

  2. Lord, those are great words for us to recite and to sing, that we would surrender all to

  3. you.

  4. And I just pray that that would sink from our mouths into our minds and right down into

  5. our hearts as we look to love and to serve you, Lord, to surrender all things to you,

  6. and that we may find true joy, true satisfaction, that you would truly be all that we need.

  7. In Christ's name, amen.

  8. Tonight we'll continue to look at the book of Mark.

  9. We'll be in chapter 10, starting in verse 17.

  10. We kind of see in this section of Mark, Jesus continues to teach his disciples and to show

  11. them the nature and the character of the kingdom of God.

  12. So, and right here in this passage, we'll begin with verse 17 and go through verse 31.

  13. And I'll read that for us as we start.

  14. And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him,

  15. good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  16. And Jesus said to him, why do you call me good?

  17. No one is good except God, God alone.

  18. You know the commandments.

  19. Do not murder.

  20. Do not commit adultery.

  21. Do not steal.

  22. Do not bear false witness.

  23. Do not defraud.

  24. Honor your father and mother.

  25. And he said to him, teacher, all these I've kept from my youth.

  26. And Jesus looking at him, loved him and said to him, you lack one thing.

  27. Go, sell all that you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven.

  28. And come follow me.

  29. Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful for he had great possessions.

  30. And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, how difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God.

  31. And the disciples were amazed at his words.

  32. But Jesus said to them, children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God.

  33. It is easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter in the kingdom of God.

  34. And they were exceedingly astonished.

  35. And he said to him, and they said to him, then who can be saved?

  36. Jesus looked at them and said, with man it is impossible, but not with God.

  37. For all things are possible with God.

  38. Peter began to say to him, see, we have left everything and followed you.

  39. Jesus said, truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the gospel.

  40. Who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life.

  41. But many who are first will be last.

  42. And the last verse.

  43. Hmm.

  44. There was this missionary.

  45. He left his home.

  46. He gave up his culture.

  47. He gave up his language.

  48. He buried three of his family members in one year.

  49. He was robbed for almost everything he had.

  50. But except send the guy to jail.

  51. Because of the harsh penal code, he writes him a letter.

  52. In the midst of all this, I guess he's in China, by the way.

  53. And in the midst of all this, there's the Boxers' Rebellion.

  54. In the missionary agency he's working with, they lose 58 of their people and about 21 of their children.

  55. And in the midst of that, he takes no reparations.

  56. He takes no action to defend them against that.

  57. But yet, his whole goal in that is to reach the people of this country and to see that they know Christ.

  58. And towards the end of his life, he makes this statement.

  59. He says, I never made a sacrifice.

  60. Wouldn't that be kind of odd or strange?

  61. Maybe for some of us, kind of romantic, that kind of thing where I never sacrificed anything.

  62. And can you imagine that?

  63. Everything you've been through, every agonizing decision you've made,

  64. everything that you've given up, whether voluntarily or involuntarily,

  65. of course we were like, that's a sacrifice.

  66. We've given this up.

  67. We've let this thing go of value that we've treasured for so long.

  68. And could you make that kind of statement at the end of your life?

  69. You said, I've never sacrificed anything.

  70. But what does he mean by this?

  71. What does his life say about this?

  72. In kind of interpreting life, it seems to say,

  73. it means living a life of following Jesus brings a certain fullness

  74. and a certain satisfaction that comes by no other means.

  75. It doesn't come by staying in the comfort of your own home

  76. or your own country, in his case.

  77. It only comes by following Christ and knowing his will

  78. and treasuring just the fullness and the joy that comes in him.

  79. So as we look at this rich young ruler tonight,

  80. we see certain things about him.

  81. Not all of these are bad things.

  82. Not all of these are good things.

  83. But we definitely see here him being sincere.

  84. As you kind of look in verse 17, it says,

  85. And as Jesus was setting out on his journey,

  86. a man ran up to him and knelt before him and asked him,

  87. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  88. So Jesus is on his way, and this guy just kind of runs along

  89. and kneels before him.

  90. From the different, from the gospels,

  91. we kind of see that he's wealthy, he's rich, he's a ruler,

  92. so he runs out and kneels before Jesus, this teacher.

  93. And that to be kind of a strange thing for him to do during that time,

  94. being in his kind of position of authority,

  95. him being a ruler, him having that status in society.

  96. But we see him running out before Jesus.

  97. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  98. So we see a sincerity there,

  99. him not just thinking about himself,

  100. but what's to come,

  101. him thinking about eternal life.

  102. Wouldn't that be kind of a noble thing

  103. for him to earnestly to be seeking about

  104. what will happen in his life as it comes to an end?

  105. And what if we kind of all thought that way?

  106. Like, if I knew what was to happen when I die,

  107. like, would that change how I live now?

  108. And I think he was kind of in that same mode here.

  109. He was wondering, like, if I die,

  110. what is going to happen to me?

  111. So, he's sincere, he's earnest,

  112. he's anxious to know where his life is headed.

  113. And Jesus says to him,

  114. why do you call me good?

  115. No one is good except God alone.

  116. You know the commandments.

  117. Do not murder.

  118. Do not commit adultery.

  119. Do not steal.

  120. Do not bear false witness.

  121. Do not defraud.

  122. Honor your father and mother.

  123. And just considering this,

  124. Jesus starts off,

  125. why do you call me good?

  126. God is good.

  127. Only God is good.

  128. So, he gets the mind of this rich,

  129. young, little working.

  130. He gets him to kind of see how he's defining good.

  131. Because either, right here,

  132. he's going to say,

  133. well, if only God is good,

  134. then who is the good teacher I'm talking to?

  135. Is he defining Jesus as being good?

  136. And in that, defining him,

  137. making him to be God?

  138. Well, his view of goodness

  139. is merely from a human standpoint,

  140. where he's subjectively comparing himself

  141. to others around him

  142. and coming up with his own moral standard,

  143. where he's kind of saying,

  144. well, according to these things,

  145. he's good.

  146. He teaches people.

  147. I'm good.

  148. I'm rich.

  149. I'm a ruler.

  150. People respect me.

  151. So, how's he defining good here?

  152. And of course,

  153. he doesn't take the Peter approach.

  154. He doesn't run up and say,

  155. you are the Christ.

  156. We don't see that here

  157. because we see how the rest of the passage goes.

  158. We see it doesn't go in that direction.

  159. It takes another turn.

  160. Because his response is,

  161. teacher,

  162. all these I've kept from my youth.

  163. Hmm.

  164. What does he mean by this?

  165. He's kept all these things from his youth.

  166. He's never stolen.

  167. He's never lied.

  168. He's always honored his father and mother.

  169. He's never murdered.

  170. He's never bore false witness.

  171. Not in any aspect.

  172. Between the law and the Talmud,

  173. he's been able to keep himself holy

  174. and pure and undefiled in every way.

  175. The holiest guy I know.

  176. Thank you.

  177. Thank you.

  178. Thank you.

  179. So,

  180. what are we seeing here in his response?

  181. Could it be self-righteousness?

  182. Is he truly that genuine,

  183. that he's never sinned,

  184. that he's never

  185. done anything wrong in his entire life?

  186. And as we get to his response,

  187. we're going to see that,

  188. that this is all self-deception.

  189. He's blinding himself in,

  190. and thinking he's obtained some type of perfection in this life

  191. that he can kind of hang his head on.

  192. And we can see that,

  193. that we were all born into sin,

  194. that not outwardly,

  195. we tend to do these things a lot,

  196. but in our minds and in our hearts,

  197. we can,

  198. we can see us,

  199. ourselves,

  200. hating our brother,

  201. and Jesus calls that murder.

  202. And can we somehow undo this nature?

  203. No.

  204. And yet,

  205. we see this guy here,

  206. he's,

  207. he's externalized the law that was given to him.

  208. It's by saying,

  209. what must I do?

  210. In all his,

  211. in all his life,

  212. these are just things that he's been doing.

  213. He's kind of building his checklist up.

  214. He's doing all these things,

  215. and he's considering himself good.

  216. And we kind of see that

  217. every wrong thought,

  218. every misplaced emotion,

  219. every thoughtless action

  220. judges us guilty before God.

  221. God in his holiness is unique and perfect

  222. and moral in every way,

  223. and we can't measure up to that standard.

  224. He can't even tolerate a single sin.

  225. As we kind of,

  226. as we see where sin kind of derived from,

  227. we see Adam,

  228. we see Eve,

  229. we see this one sin

  230. separates man from God completely.

  231. So he's,

  232. in his holiness,

  233. unique and perfect

  234. and set apart from us.

  235. He's not ordinary,

  236. he's not casual

  237. in any way,

  238. shape,

  239. or form.

  240. He's,

  241. he's not us.

  242. He's holy,

  243. he's perfect.

  244. And all of us have been tainted in some way.

  245. And a quote from,

  246. from J.C.

  247. Rowe says,

  248. so long as we think we can keep the law,

  249. Christ profits us nothing.

  250. And we're going to see this in,

  251. in the life of this rich young ruler.

  252. So his,

  253. his ignorance,

  254. he's searching for this other,

  255. this other tool,

  256. this other thing that he can kind of

  257. add to his arsenal of,

  258. of his to-do list,

  259. where he said,

  260. I've done this and this and this.

  261. And these things have,

  262. have caused me to gain eternal life.

  263. But it all just boils down to a trap.

  264. It's,

  265. it's become a trap from him

  266. because he doesn't,

  267. he's not seeing where,

  268. where those things are leading him.

  269. And,

  270. we kind of go on.

  271. And it says,

  272. Jesus looking at him,

  273. loved him and said to him,

  274. you lack one thing.

  275. Go sell all you have

  276. and give to the poor.

  277. And you will have treasure in heaven.

  278. Come,

  279. follow me.

  280. So we see here,

  281. he's kept all these things,

  282. yet,

  283. yet he's lacking.

  284. And,

  285. and I think when Jesus tells him

  286. he's lacking,

  287. he's probably not thinking

  288. in the same way that,

  289. that Jesus thinking.

  290. Because in his self-righteous state,

  291. he's,

  292. he's thinking that he's done

  293. all that he can do.

  294. And he just kind of

  295. needs a,

  296. an extra piece of that.

  297. He just needs kind of

  298. a bonus to,

  299. to boost him along

  300. a little bit.

  301. So Jesus

  302. kind of tells him,

  303. or,

  304. or better yet,

  305. reveals where,

  306. where this rich young ruler's

  307. heart,

  308. heart is at.

  309. And we see him

  310. go away.

  311. It says,

  312. disheartened by

  313. this saying,

  314. he went away sorrowful,

  315. for he had great possessions.

  316. He loved money

  317. better than he loved his soul.

  318. He loved his possessions

  319. more than he loved himself.

  320. It's not much the fact

  321. that he had money.

  322. The fact is that

  323. he trusted in it.

  324. He took comfort in it.

  325. He made it

  326. security for himself.

  327. It was the one thing

  328. that Jesus wanted him

  329. to give up

  330. that he,

  331. he couldn't live without.

  332. isn't this kind of

  333. the,

  334. the story that we all face?

  335. A little raise here,

  336. a raise there.

  337. Maybe paid a lottery

  338. a little bit

  339. and

  340. get a little extra money

  341. and,

  342. and that'll bring comfort

  343. into our lives.

  344. We can

  345. take all the trips

  346. that we were thinking

  347. about taking.

  348. We can

  349. pay off all the debt

  350. that we have

  351. and,

  352. and that will somehow

  353. kind of put us

  354. in a position

  355. where we,

  356. where we no longer

  357. need anything.

  358. And does God

  359. kind of fall

  360. under that category

  361. in our comfort?

  362. Do we,

  363. do we really need him?

  364. Do we really seek him out?

  365. Is he really

  366. the one

  367. that we're trusting in

  368. and trusting to provide

  369. for us in that

  370. when we have

  371. all that we need

  372. right here?

  373. So what do we do

  374. to,

  375. to keep our good

  376. intentions good?

  377. How do we,

  378. how do we

  379. fend against this?

  380. I think it's

  381. just knowing

  382. that,

  383. that Christ is Lord

  384. and just knowing

  385. that he's Lord

  386. over all that we have,

  387. whether it's our lives,

  388. our,

  389. our time,

  390. our talents

  391. and gifts,

  392. our money,

  393. not just 10%

  394. of those things,

  395. but all of it,

  396. he calls us

  397. to be good stewards

  398. in the way we

  399. handle our time,

  400. the way we handle

  401. our money

  402. and all these things.

  403. So,

  404. just with that,

  405. I love your soul

  406. better than you

  407. love your possessions.

  408. and,

  409. and next,

  410. Jesus,

  411. Jesus responds

  412. to him.

  413. It doesn't just kind of,

  414. in there,

  415. he just doesn't,

  416. doesn't walk away

  417. disheartened.

  418. It says,

  419. Jesus looking at him

  420. loved him.

  421. Hmm.

  422. so this guy,

  423. he,

  424. he's overwhelmed

  425. by

  426. this demand

  427. that Jesus makes

  428. on his life.

  429. He,

  430. he's about to go away

  431. disheartening

  432. and,

  433. and Jesus looks at him,

  434. loves him,

  435. and,

  436. and tells him

  437. what he needs to hear.

  438. And,

  439. you may think

  440. this is,

  441. this is kind of unloving.

  442. He's,

  443. he's putting too high

  444. a demand on this man.

  445. Or,

  446. we may think

  447. it's pretty reasonable.

  448. This guy's pretty wealthy.

  449. He can afford

  450. to give it away.

  451. He's in the one percent.

  452. He can do a little bit more

  453. for society,

  454. pay some extra taxes

  455. or something.

  456. And then we get to,

  457. then we continue

  458. to look at verse 21.

  459. Maybe it's unreasonable

  460. because we look

  461. at this verse

  462. and,

  463. if he has to do this,

  464. then I have to do this too.

  465. Jesus is commanding him

  466. to do this.

  467. See,

  468. he's also commanding me

  469. to give up everything

  470. I have.

  471. Don't we kind of

  472. think that way?

  473. We'll end up

  474. selling off

  475. all our possessions,

  476. moving to some

  477. deserted island

  478. where we read

  479. the Bible to cannibals

  480. or something like that.

  481. But Jesus looks at him

  482. and he loved him.

  483. He had his best benefit

  484. in mind.

  485. He wanted to see

  486. this man prosper,

  487. not in the way

  488. that the rich young ruler

  489. wanted himself to prosper,

  490. but in a different way.

  491. He sees this guy

  492. caught up in his

  493. self-righteousness

  494. and the comfort

  495. that his wealth

  496. kind of brings to him.

  497. And we see

  498. that's why he

  499. experiences this anguish.

  500. He's holding this thing

  501. so tightly

  502. that

  503. he just can't let it go.

  504. And yet Jesus

  505. knows this already.

  506. He's God.

  507. He knows that this man

  508. is coming to him.

  509. We kind of see that

  510. in his dialogue

  511. with the Syrophoenician woman.

  512. Well, the Samaritan woman

  513. at the well,

  514. we see that there,

  515. him knowing

  516. and poking

  517. and prodding

  518. and asking these questions.

  519. But yet here,

  520. he still extends love

  521. to this guy,

  522. even though his affections

  523. are elsewhere.

  524. Not only does he love him,

  525. he promises him treasure.

  526. And he says,

  527. and you will have treasure

  528. in heaven.

  529. Come and follow me.

  530. And I guess this isn't

  531. the treasure he wanted.

  532. And we see in this

  533. statement that

  534. Jesus is offering him

  535. this treasure,

  536. this treasure of eternal life

  537. that he's so desperately

  538. looking for.

  539. but yet,

  540. he's so,

  541. so tied to his

  542. earthly possessions

  543. that

  544. he's unwilling

  545. to let this go.

  546. And this idol

  547. in his heart

  548. just dethrones God

  549. and

  550. it draws his affections

  551. away from this good teacher

  552. who,

  553. who he's running to

  554. for,

  555. for this great answer

  556. that he thinks

  557. is going to

  558. impact his whole eternity.

  559. And we kind of

  560. respond to

  561. our,

  562. our idolatrous actions

  563. in,

  564. in the same way.

  565. God couldn't possibly

  566. want me to get rid of that.

  567. It's just so near

  568. and dear to my heart

  569. that

  570. I really can't let it go.

  571. And then we kind of

  572. justify,

  573. justify when people

  574. try to hold us accountable.

  575. God knows my heart.

  576. I mean,

  577. indeed he does,

  578. but,

  579. but do you know your heart?

  580. Are you deceived

  581. like this rich young ruler?

  582. And have you confronted

  583. the,

  584. the things in your heart

  585. that,

  586. that pull you away

  587. from Christ?

  588. And going back

  589. a few chapters

  590. to,

  591. to Mark chapter four,

  592. he's,

  593. he's telling the parable

  594. of the sword here

  595. and,

  596. and I definitely think

  597. it,

  598. it applies,

  599. applies to the rich young ruler

  600. here when,

  601. in verses 18 and 19,

  602. he says,

  603. and others are sown

  604. among thorns.

  605. There are those

  606. who wear,

  607. who hear the word,

  608. but the cares of the world

  609. and the,

  610. the see,

  611. the seefulness of riches

  612. and the desires

  613. of other things

  614. enter in

  615. and choke the word

  616. and it proves

  617. unfruitful.

  618. so this,

  619. our fruitfulness

  620. leaves him kind of,

  621. kind of useless.

  622. He,

  623. he goes away

  624. and

  625. we never know

  626. if

  627. this ever

  628. comes back

  629. and he ever

  630. thinks about it again

  631. but he walks away

  632. disheartened

  633. and sorrowful.

  634. you see Jesus here

  635. lovingly offering

  636. truth

  637. and

  638. this great gift

  639. that should be

  640. satisfying this young

  641. rich ruler's soul

  642. but yet he couldn't

  643. give himself fully

  644. to Jesus

  645. because,

  646. because of these

  647. possessions

  648. and

  649. we see here

  650. Jesus' verdict

  651. on the love

  652. of money

  653. and Jesus looked around

  654. and said to his disciples,

  655. how difficult it is

  656. for those who have wealth

  657. to enter the kingdom of God

  658. and his disciples

  659. were amazed

  660. at his words

  661. but Jesus said to them,

  662. children,

  663. how difficult

  664. it is

  665. to enter the kingdom

  666. of God

  667. it is easier

  668. for a camel

  669. to go through

  670. an eye of an eel

  671. than for a rich person

  672. to enter the kingdom

  673. of God

  674. and they were

  675. exceedingly

  676. astonished

  677. and said to him,

  678. then who can be saved?

  679. through this account

  680. Jesus just continues

  681. to preach

  682. that the demands

  683. of the kingdom of God

  684. are so,

  685. so radically different

  686. than our expectations

  687. and the bar

  688. is set high.

  689. If the gate was broad

  690. then we all

  691. would enter.

  692. If everyone

  693. could follow

  694. their own path

  695. to God

  696. then why would

  697. he be so strict

  698. here

  699. as to say

  700. that it's harder

  701. for a rich

  702. to enter

  703. the kingdom of God

  704. than the camel

  705. to pass

  706. through an eye

  707. of a needle

  708. the biggest animal

  709. they ever seen

  710. in Palestine

  711. at this time.

  712. Not only was he saying

  713. that it was

  714. a difficult puzzle

  715. that could

  716. be sometime

  717. someday

  718. eventually figured out

  719. this was

  720. an impossibility

  721. and the same

  722. holds true

  723. for the rich

  724. who merely

  725. trust in their riches

  726. who are merely

  727. satisfied

  728. by the riches

  729. that they have.

  730. Their difficulty

  731. turns into

  732. an impossibility

  733. at this point.

  734. And we're quick

  735. to point out

  736. the explicitly

  737. bad things

  738. that we see

  739. in our own lives

  740. and around us

  741. murdering

  742. stealing

  743. lying

  744. and all of these

  745. things but

  746. what about

  747. our idolatrous

  748. attitude

  749. towards good

  750. things

  751. the good

  752. things in our

  753. lives

  754. that we desire

  755. and hope

  756. for

  757. what is our

  758. attitude like

  759. towards those

  760. things?

  761. Are we merely

  762. trusting God

  763. because he's

  764. going to get us

  765. those things

  766. or

  767. are those

  768. things just

  769. kind of icing

  770. on the cake?

  771. Are they

  772. extra?

  773. Are we truly

  774. satisfied in

  775. Christ?

  776. And as we

  777. continue to move

  778. through this

  779. passage

  780. we see here

  781. we see him

  782. here with his

  783. disciples

  784. and they were

  785. exceedingly

  786. astonished

  787. and said

  788. to him

  789. then who

  790. can be

  791. saved?

  792. And Jesus

  793. looked at them

  794. and said

  795. with man

  796. it is

  797. impossible

  798. but with

  799. God

  800. for all

  801. things

  802. are

  803. possible.

  804. You can

  805. almost hear

  806. them gasp

  807. here

  808. because as

  809. he says

  810. this twice

  811. they were

  812. amazed

  813. they were

  814. astonished

  815. if this

  816. guy comes

  817. to him

  818. somehow

  819. has a

  820. leg up

  821. on them

  822. on the

  823. highway to

  824. heaven

  825. then

  826. what are

  827. their chances?

  828. How can

  829. they get

  830. there?

  831. And this

  832. is right

  833. in line

  834. with first

  835. century

  836. Jewish

  837. thinking

  838. that wealth

  839. and prosperity

  840. those things

  841. were signs

  842. of blessing

  843. from God

  844. that people

  845. that had

  846. these things

  847. were blessed

  848. they had

  849. favor

  850. on their

  851. lives

  852. and

  853. somehow

  854. that

  855. status

  856. showed

  857. that

  858. God

  859. delighted

  860. in them

  861. in a

  862. sense

  863. so these

  864. bunch of

  865. fishermen

  866. were together

  867. and they

  868. were wondering

  869. if this

  870. guy

  871. who's

  872. followed

  873. the law

  874. who's

  875. has this

  876. status

  877. who appears

  878. to be

  879. blessed by

  880. God

  881. can't answer

  882. the kingdom

  883. then what

  884. about us?

  885. How can

  886. we be

  887. saved?

  888. And we

  889. see here

  890. the disciples

  891. having to

  892. unlearn

  893. some of

  894. the things

  895. they grew

  896. up with

  897. in their

  898. society

  899. and in

  900. their

  901. culture

  902. they had

  903. to

  904. unlearn

  905. the things

  906. that they

  907. were

  908. hearing

  909. about

  910. salvation

  911. they had

  912. to unlearn

  913. the things

  914. that they

  915. were learning

  916. about

  917. deliverance

  918. from

  919. their

  920. sin

  921. and what

  922. they

  923. would

  924. look like

  925. their

  926. good works

  927. were becoming

  928. useless

  929. their ethnicity

  930. was pretty

  931. much awash

  932. and high

  933. social

  934. standard

  935. high social

  936. standing

  937. was becoming

  938. meaningless

  939. as they

  940. began

  941. as they

  942. continued

  943. to hear

  944. and to

  945. learn

  946. and to

  947. follow

  948. Jesus'

  949. teaching

  950. God

  951. but surely

  952. there

  953. can be

  954. something

  955. they

  956. can

  957. cling

  958. to

  959. but

  960. Jesus

  961. continues

  962. to tear

  963. all this

  964. down

  965. he

  966. continues

  967. to

  968. remove

  969. all of

  970. these

  971. other

  972. things

  973. and

  974. deconstruct

  975. everything

  976. that

  977. their

  978. worldview

  979. kind of

  980. brought

  981. together

  982. for them

  983. so who

  984. can be

  985. saved

  986. and he

  987. looked at

  988. them

  989. and said

  990. with man

  991. it is

  992. impossible

  993. but with

  994. God

  995. for all

  996. things

  997. are

  998. possible

  999. with

  1000. God

  1001. so

  1002. in this

  1003. the rich

  1004. young

  1005. ruler

  1006. sheds

  1007. light

  1008. on what

  1009. we should

  1010. hold dear

  1011. to our

  1012. hearts

  1013. he

  1014. he gives

  1015. us

  1016. this picture

  1017. kind of

  1018. contrasting

  1019. what comes

  1020. in the

  1021. passage

  1022. before

  1023. where

  1024. the disciples

  1025. are kind

  1026. of holding

  1027. the little

  1028. kids off

  1029. from coming

  1030. and like

  1031. Jesus is

  1032. like no

  1033. let them

  1034. come to

  1035. me

  1036. but we

  1037. see the

  1038. rich young

  1039. ruler

  1040. coming

  1041. here

  1042. he seems

  1043. to have

  1044. access

  1045. he comes

  1046. he kneels

  1047. and Jesus

  1048. in this

  1049. shows us

  1050. that

  1051. the rich

  1052. who

  1053. who value

  1054. their treasure

  1055. who value

  1056. their possessions

  1057. they're more

  1058. far off

  1059. than those

  1060. little children

  1061. that you've

  1062. seen before

  1063. and we

  1064. see here

  1065. the gospel

  1066. isn't

  1067. gained

  1068. it's

  1069. received

  1070. and this

  1071. is just

  1072. a valuable

  1073. lesson

  1074. right here

  1075. that

  1076. by faith

  1077. alone

  1078. through

  1079. grace

  1080. alone

  1081. in Christ

  1082. alone

  1083. that's where

  1084. our salvation

  1085. comes from

  1086. that's

  1087. that's

  1088. where

  1089. we're

  1090. saved

  1091. he says

  1092. with man

  1093. it is impossible

  1094. but with God

  1095. all things are

  1096. possible

  1097. and yet

  1098. in that

  1099. he makes

  1100. a promise

  1101. to them

  1102. as well

  1103. we see

  1104. we see

  1105. Peter here

  1106. maybe a little

  1107. antsy

  1108. after this

  1109. he sees

  1110. this

  1111. rich

  1112. young ruler

  1113. coming

  1114. he

  1115. he's

  1116. observing

  1117. what's

  1118. going on

  1119. he's

  1120. he's

  1121. seeing

  1122. he's

  1123. he's

  1124. hearing

  1125. and Peter

  1126. says

  1127. see

  1128. we have

  1129. left

  1130. everything

  1131. to follow

  1132. you

  1133. and Jesus

  1134. said

  1135. truly

  1136. I say

  1137. to you

  1138. there is

  1139. no one

  1140. who has

  1141. left

  1142. house

  1143. or brothers

  1144. or sisters

  1145. or mothers

  1146. or fathers

  1147. or children

  1148. or lands

  1149. for the sake

  1150. for my sake

  1151. and for the gospel

  1152. who will not

  1153. receive a hundredfold

  1154. now in this time

  1155. houses

  1156. and brothers

  1157. and sisters

  1158. and mothers

  1159. and children

  1160. and lands

  1161. with persecutions

  1162. and in the age

  1163. to come

  1164. eternal life

  1165. and in this

  1166. we see

  1167. Jesus

  1168. kind of

  1169. going back

  1170. to what he was

  1171. saying to the

  1172. rich young ruler

  1173. come and follow

  1174. me

  1175. he's promising

  1176. these things

  1177. as they follow

  1178. him

  1179. the rich young

  1180. ruler

  1181. leaves this heart

  1182. and then we see

  1183. the disciples

  1184. here

  1185. they're still

  1186. persevering

  1187. they're following

  1188. Christ

  1189. and Peter interjects

  1190. like we've left

  1191. everything

  1192. he seems to be

  1193. searching for

  1194. an answer

  1195. from Jesus

  1196. to give him

  1197. some hope

  1198. like this guy

  1199. he's not

  1200. leaving anything

  1201. behind

  1202. but we've

  1203. left everything

  1204. and for the

  1205. present

  1206. he says

  1207. they'll receive

  1208. a hundredfold

  1209. and we don't

  1210. see them

  1211. we don't

  1212. see the

  1213. disciples

  1214. going back

  1215. to their

  1216. homes

  1217. we don't

  1218. we don't

  1219. see them

  1220. obtaining

  1221. great wealth

  1222. throughout

  1223. the

  1224. history

  1225. that is

  1226. to unfold

  1227. after this

  1228. they're

  1229. moderate

  1230. for their

  1231. faith

  1232. so

  1233. how is

  1234. this

  1235. true

  1236. and Christ

  1237. gives us

  1238. such a

  1239. marvelous

  1240. family

  1241. of brothers

  1242. and sisters

  1243. of mothers

  1244. and brothers

  1245. as we

  1246. as we

  1247. as you

  1248. kind of think

  1249. about Mark

  1250. 3

  1251. verse

  1252. verse 35

  1253. where he says

  1254. whoever does

  1255. the will of God

  1256. he is my

  1257. brother

  1258. and my

  1259. sister

  1260. and mother

  1261. so we

  1262. see

  1263. so we

  1264. see here

  1265. manifested

  1266. in our

  1267. day

  1268. the church

  1269. the body

  1270. of Christ

  1271. knitted

  1272. together

  1273. all of us

  1274. being many

  1275. members

  1276. being this

  1277. family that

  1278. he's talking

  1279. about here

  1280. but yet he

  1281. also says

  1282. persecutions

  1283. that may turn

  1284. some of us

  1285. off

  1286. but he says

  1287. persecution

  1288. will come

  1289. with these

  1290. things

  1291. and I

  1292. just kind

  1293. of think

  1294. about

  1295. the book

  1296. of John

  1297. right before

  1298. his high

  1299. priestly

  1300. prayer

  1301. and at the

  1302. end of

  1303. chapter 16

  1304. he says

  1305. I have said

  1306. these things

  1307. to you

  1308. that in me

  1309. you may

  1310. have peace

  1311. and in the

  1312. world

  1313. you will

  1314. have

  1315. tribulation

  1316. so he

  1317. continues

  1318. to promise

  1319. them

  1320. suffering

  1321. persecution

  1322. knowing

  1323. what's

  1324. in store

  1325. for them

  1326. once

  1327. he

  1328. leaves

  1329. and

  1330. suffering

  1331. can

  1332. be an

  1333. ugly

  1334. thing

  1335. it can

  1336. break

  1337. the

  1338. strongest

  1339. of people

  1340. that we

  1341. know

  1342. in Tim

  1343. Kell's book

  1344. walking

  1345. with God

  1346. through pain

  1347. and suffering

  1348. he says

  1349. while the

  1350. world views

  1351. lead us

  1352. to sit

  1353. in the

  1354. midst

  1355. of life's

  1356. joys

  1357. foreseeing

  1358. the coming

  1359. sorrows

  1360. Christianity

  1361. empowers

  1362. its people

  1363. to sit

  1364. in the

  1365. midst

  1366. of the

  1367. world's

  1368. sorrows

  1369. tasting

  1370. the joy

  1371. to come

  1372. and at

  1373. the end

  1374. of the

  1375. day

  1376. persecution

  1377. it makes

  1378. us more

  1379. like Christ

  1380. we see

  1381. the apostles

  1382. in jail

  1383. we read

  1384. Paul's

  1385. letters

  1386. where he's

  1387. always talking

  1388. about this

  1389. identifying

  1390. with Christ

  1391. and his

  1392. sufferings

  1393. and as

  1394. we read

  1395. Hebrews

  1396. the joy

  1397. set before

  1398. him

  1399. that came

  1400. of suffering

  1401. so

  1402. persecution

  1403. is

  1404. is just

  1405. another thing

  1406. that we

  1407. as Christians

  1408. have to

  1409. face

  1410. and to

  1411. embrace

  1412. as we

  1413. walk

  1414. this

  1415. journey

  1416. and in

  1417. the age

  1418. to come

  1419. he promises

  1420. eternal

  1421. life

  1422. and

  1423. Keller

  1424. also says

  1425. in this

  1426. book

  1427. but

  1428. resurrection

  1429. is not

  1430. just

  1431. consolation

  1432. it is

  1433. restoration

  1434. we get

  1435. back all

  1436. the love

  1437. the loved

  1438. ones

  1439. the goods

  1440. the beauties

  1441. of this

  1442. life

  1443. but

  1444. unimaginable

  1445. degrees

  1446. of glory

  1447. and joy

  1448. and strength

  1449. can you

  1450. imagine

  1451. that

  1452. unimaginable

  1453. glory

  1454. and Paul

  1455. talks about

  1456. this weight

  1457. of glory

  1458. that is

  1459. to come

  1460. that

  1461. whatever we

  1462. lose here

  1463. whatever we

  1464. gain here

  1465. in the life

  1466. to come

  1467. there is

  1468. there's just

  1469. so much

  1470. more waiting

  1471. for us

  1472. my friends

  1473. this is

  1474. eternal

  1475. life

  1476. Jesus

  1477. promises

  1478. abundance

  1479. only found

  1480. in him

  1481. that

  1482. he's not

  1483. a means

  1484. to joy

  1485. he's not

  1486. a means

  1487. to happiness

  1488. he's not

  1489. a means

  1490. to great

  1491. possessions

  1492. he's the

  1493. end of

  1494. all those

  1495. things

  1496. joy

  1497. is

  1498. Christ

  1499. is joy

  1500. he is

  1501. happiness

  1502. he's everything

  1503. that we

  1504. are looking

  1505. for

  1506. and jumping

  1507. back to

  1508. verse 17

  1509. we see

  1510. here

  1511. Christ is

  1512. setting out

  1513. on a

  1514. journey

  1515. in all

  1516. three of

  1517. the synoptic

  1518. gospels

  1519. Matthew

  1520. Mark

  1521. and Luke

  1522. we see

  1523. this story

  1524. in the same

  1525. place

  1526. in all

  1527. of them

  1528. he's

  1529. setting out

  1530. on his

  1531. journey

  1532. with his

  1533. disciples

  1534. and they're

  1535. heading to

  1536. Jerusalem

  1537. and we

  1538. all know

  1539. what happens

  1540. there

  1541. it's kind

  1542. of a

  1543. final

  1544. showdown

  1545. of sorts

  1546. and we

  1547. see this

  1548. rich young

  1549. ruler

  1550. kind of

  1551. meeting him

  1552. on the way

  1553. to that

  1554. and Christ

  1555. is giving

  1556. him a

  1557. glimpse of

  1558. that

  1559. and the

  1560. things that

  1561. he's telling

  1562. them

  1563. and the

  1564. instructions

  1565. that he's

  1566. giving them

  1567. as he's

  1568. heading to

  1569. the cross

  1570. at this

  1571. point

  1572. and he's

  1573. teaching his

  1574. disciples

  1575. and preparing

  1576. them for

  1577. that very

  1578. thing to

  1579. come

  1580. he's

  1581. continuing

  1582. to disciple

  1583. them

  1584. and teach

  1585. them

  1586. and give

  1587. them this

  1588. hope for

  1589. the rough

  1590. road that

  1591. is to

  1592. come

  1593. and about

  1594. the nature

  1595. and the

  1596. character of

  1597. the kingdom

  1598. of God

  1599. that they

  1600. will have

  1601. something to

  1602. hope in

  1603. and even

  1604. going back

  1605. to chapter

  1606. eight he

  1607. he continues

  1608. to he

  1609. he starts

  1610. to instruct

  1611. them this

  1612. way

  1613. and in

  1614. verse 34

  1615. he says

  1616. if anybody

  1617. will come

  1618. after me

  1619. let him

  1620. deny himself

  1621. and take

  1622. up his

  1623. cross and

  1624. follow me

  1625. for whoever

  1626. would save

  1627. his life

  1628. will lose

  1629. it

  1630. whoever

  1631. loses

  1632. his life

  1633. for my

  1634. sake

  1635. and the

  1636. gospels

  1637. will save

  1638. it

  1639. for what

  1640. does it

  1641. profit a

  1642. man to

  1643. gain the

  1644. whole world

  1645. and forfeit

  1646. his soul

  1647. wealth and

  1648. possessions

  1649. are fleeting

  1650. marriage and

  1651. family

  1652. those things

  1653. aren't

  1654. ultimate

  1655. the idea

  1656. here is to

  1657. to take

  1658. hold of

  1659. Christ daily

  1660. treasure him

  1661. above everything

  1662. because he's

  1663. worth more

  1664. than all

  1665. those things

  1666. and I

  1667. just want

  1668. to leave

  1669. you with

  1670. one thought

  1671. from 2

  1672. Corinthians

  1673. 8-9

  1674. and though

  1675. he was

  1676. rich

  1677. yet for

  1678. your sake

  1679. he became

  1680. poor

  1681. so that

  1682. you might

  1683. so that

  1684. you by

  1685. his poverty

  1686. might become

  1687. rich

  1688. I'll pray

  1689. for us

  1690. Lord

  1691. Lord that

  1692. we would

  1693. give you

  1694. all our

  1695. affections

  1696. that we

  1697. would

  1698. lose the

  1699. illusion

  1700. of power

  1701. that we

  1702. think we

  1703. have over

  1704. our lives

  1705. and all

  1706. the hard

  1707. work that

  1708. we

  1709. put in

  1710. to claim

  1711. the things

  1712. that you've

  1713. blessed us

  1714. with

  1715. that we

  1716. would come

  1717. to you

  1718. to surrender

  1719. ourselves

  1720. and our

  1721. lives

  1722. to give

  1723. back all

  1724. the things

  1725. that you've

  1726. given us

  1727. and

  1728. that we

  1729. would

  1730. treasure

  1731. you

  1732. as the

  1733. giver

  1734. rather than

  1735. the gifts

  1736. that

  1737. with our

  1738. whole hearts

  1739. we would

  1740. seek to

  1741. love you

  1742. and to

  1743. know you

  1744. and to

  1745. follow you

  1746. and it's in

  1747. your name

  1748. that I pray

  1749. Amen
