  1. Good evening, church.

  2. Let's turn in our Bibles to Mark 11, 27, which is page 848 in your pew Bibles.

  3. We're going to read through to chapter 12, verse 12, as we'll be focusing most of our

  4. time on that parable of the wicked farmers.

  5. Page 848, Mark 11, verse 27.

    Mark 11:27

  6. Verse 27, and they came again to Jerusalem.

  7. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came

  8. to him.

  9. And they said to him, by what authority are you doing these things?

  10. Or who gave you this authority to do them?

  11. Jesus said to them, I will ask you one question.

  12. Answer me.

  13. And I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

  14. Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?

  15. Answer me.

  16. And they discussed it with one another, saying, if we say from heaven, he will say, why then

  17. did you not believe him?

  18. But shall we say from man?

  19. They were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet.

  20. So they answered Jesus, we do not know.

  21. And Jesus said to them, neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

  22. And he began to speak to them in parables.

  23. A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the wine press and built

  24. a tower and leased it to tenants and went into another country.

  25. When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit

  26. of the vineyard.

  27. And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty handed.

  28. Again, he sent to them another servant.

  29. And they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully.

  30. And he sent another and him they killed.

  31. And so with many others, some they beat and some they killed.

  32. He had still one other, a beloved son.

  33. Finally, he sent him to them saying, they will respect my son.

  34. But those tenants said to one another, this is the heir.

  35. Come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours.

  36. And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.

  37. What will the owner of the vineyard do?

  38. He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others.

  39. Have you not read this scripture?

  40. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

  41. This was the Lord's doing and it is marvelous in our eyes.

  42. And they were seeking to arrest him, but feared the people.

  43. For they perceived that he had told the parable against them.

  44. So they left him and went away.

  45. The word of the Lord.

  46. Let's pray.

  47. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the opportunity we have this evening to gather and worship.

  48. Father, we praise you this evening for your lordship, your sovereignty, and your authority.

  49. As we marinate in your word this evening, continue to soften hearts and turn us to you in love, humility, and obedience.

  50. Let us know and praise you truly as you reveal yourself in the scriptures.

  51. Amen.

  52. Amen.

  53. In the name of your son and by the power of your Holy Spirit, I pray.

  54. Amen.

  55. Mom, I don't want to clean my room.

  56. Dad, I don't want to mow the lawn.

  57. That's a really annoying sound.

  58. And any parent here probably recognizes it, though.

  59. It is universally known as whining.

  60. My parents tell me that for the first few years of my life, I was the perfect fat little baby.

  61. Who just laid around and didn't want to move or make any noise.

  62. But when I got older, I began to whine.

  63. Whenever I was given orders that seemed unreasonable, unpleasant, or inconvenient, I did the thing that we as sinful human beings do.

  64. Whine.

  65. And do we understand what creates this impulse?

  66. Do we understand the heart that produces such an annoying high-pitched sound?

  67. It is a heart of rebellion.

  68. It is a heart that wants authority for itself.

  69. It is a heart that is confined to a body that is too weak to fight.

  70. So it feebly struggles through whining.

  71. But as we get older and feel like we have got a little more power,

  72. that whining blossoms into full-fledged rebellion.

  73. Rejection of authority.

  74. It is this rejection that Christ is warning us against in this passage.

  75. In the end of Mark 11, he faces a question from the religious authorities.

  76. Verse 28.

  77. By what authority are you doing these things?

  78. Or who gave you this authority to do them?

  79. Jesus has just been cleansing the temple and healing on the Sabbath and people are really thrown off by that.

  80. And so Jesus doesn't directly answer this question.

  81. Because he knows the heart behind it.

  82. This is why he deflects to the question about John.

  83. If the Pharisees are waffling on the identity of John the Baptist,

  84. how will they deal with the Son of God?

  85. If middle ground doesn't make sense with John,

  86. it sure doesn't make sense with Jesus.

  87. Jesus' response, as foreshadowing of Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men,

  88. you can't handle the truth.

  89. But, of course, Jesus actually does give them the truth,

  90. though indirectly.

  91. He does it through the parable of the tenants.

  92. So we're going to see a few things.

  93. What authority Christ has,

  94. how we and the corrupt Jewish leaders approach that authority,

  95. and how we should approach that authority.

  96. Let's take a look at verse 1 of chapter 12.

  97. Christ begins with the story of a man who plants a vineyard

  98. and puts a fence around it

  99. and digs a pit for the wine press

  100. and builds a tower

  101. and leases it to tenants

  102. and goes to another country.

  103. What Jesus is doing here is he's quoting Isaiah 5,

  104. which begins almost exactly like this.

  105. But in this case,

  106. the tenants are the corrupt Jewish authorities

  107. that he's speaking to.

  108. And so the parable continues.

  109. When the season came,

  110. he sent a servant to the tenants

  111. to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.

  112. This is verse 2.

  113. And they took him and beat him

  114. and sent him away empty-handed.

  115. Again he sent to them another servant,

  116. and they struck him on the head

  117. and treated him shamefully.

  118. And he sent another,

  119. and him they killed.

  120. And so with many others,

  121. some they beat and some they killed.

  122. He had still one other,

  123. a beloved son.

  124. Finally he sent him to them,

  125. saying,

  126. They will respect my son.

  127. But those tenants said to one another,

  128. This is the heir.

  129. Come let us kill him,

  130. and the inheritance will be ours.

  131. And they took him and killed him

  132. and threw him out of the vineyard.

  133. This is, at first glance,

  134. the story of the Old Testament.

  135. The Pharisees would have suspected that

  136. from the beginning,

  137. since Jesus is starting with a quote of Isaiah.

  138. This is beginning with God's creation

  139. and claim of his people.

  140. It is God who plants the vineyard,

  141. which we are told in Isaiah

  142. is the people of Israel.

  143. It is God who protects them

  144. with the fence and the watchtower in the parable.

  145. And through numerous historical events in Scripture,

  146. whether it's the miracle of the crossing of the Red Sea,

  147. or the Lord's many military victories.

  148. But the bad news comes

  149. in the tenants' response

  150. to the Lord's provision.

  151. They methodically, consistently,

  152. and violently reject the Lord himself.

  153. He sends servants,

  154. specifically the prophets,

  155. and they treat them horribly.

  156. They chased Elijah.

  157. They beat Jeremiah.

  158. They sawed Isaiah in two.

  159. They had John the Baptist beheaded.

  160. Yet another recurring theme

  161. that we see in Scripture.

  162. God provides,

  163. and yet we continually,

  164. faithlessly reject him.

  165. But then the sending of the Son.

  166. The heir.

  167. While the tenants should have seen this

  168. as an extension of grace from the owner,

  169. who could have given up

  170. at any time along the way.

  171. Instead, they seize this as an opportunity.

  172. They think,

  173. Oh, it's the Son.

  174. We can take this guy out,

  175. and the vineyard is ours.

  176. So they kill him

  177. and throw him out.

  178. Friends, Jesus is on the offensive.

  179. With this parable,

  180. he utters his indictment.

  181. In the last week of his life,

  182. which is where we are

  183. in the Gospel of Mark right now,

  184. he faces those who will soon have him killed,

  185. looks them in the face,

  186. tells them what they're about to do to him,

  187. and he tells them

  188. what the result of their action will be.

  189. What will the owner do?

  190. He will come and destroy the tenants

  191. and give the vineyard to others.

  192. The result of rejection of the Son,

  193. both for the corrupt Jewish leadership

  194. and for us,

  195. is destruction.

  196. In fact, to make it even more explicit,

  197. it is conscious eternal suffering.

  198. The verdict ends

  199. with an assertion of Christ's identity

  200. as he quotes Psalm 118,

  201. a well-known psalm about the Messiah,

  202. verses 10 and 11 of chapter 12.

  203. The stone that the builders rejected

  204. has become the cornerstone.

  205. This was the Lord's doing,

  206. and it is marvelous in our eyes.

  207. Wait.

  208. Marvelous in our eyes.

  209. We've just been talking about destruction.

  210. How is this marvelous?

  211. Well, for the Pharisees,

  212. it surely isn't.

  213. But for us,

  214. it's the greatest news of all.

  215. Why?

  216. Well, let's back this up

  217. to the beginning.

  218. Let's say the very beginning.

  219. The first verse of this parable

  220. is not just about God's calling of Israel.

  221. It's about God's creation of you

  222. and his provision for you.

  223. The continuing stories of the tenant's

  224. rejection of God's authority

  225. and righteous desires

  226. are the story of you and I

  227. and our consistent rejection

  228. of his authority.

  229. It's the story of the time

  230. when we're tempted by lust,

  231. when the desire boils up

  232. and the word comes in telling us

  233. that everyone who lusts after a woman or man

  234. has already committed adultery

  235. with them in their heart,

  236. but we ignore it

  237. and push it out

  238. and continue to dwell in our sin.

  239. When we in pride

  240. exalt ourselves over others

  241. and the word comes in

  242. reminding us that God says,

  243. I will punish the world for its evil

  244. and the wicked for their iniquity.

  245. I will put an end

  246. to the pomp of the arrogant

  247. and lay low the pompous pride

  248. of the ruthless.

  249. But we push it out

  250. and continue to dwell in our sin.

  251. When we are consumed

  252. with a desire for wealth,

  253. for power,

  254. for position,

  255. for status

  256. and the word comes in

  257. reminding us

  258. all that is in the world,

  259. the desires of the flesh,

  260. the desires of the eyes

  261. and the pride of possessions

  262. is not from the Father

  263. but is from the world

  264. and the world is passing away

  265. along with its desires,

  266. we ignore it.

  267. Pushing it away,

  268. thinking that we know best.

  269. You see,

  270. we are not innocent creatures.

  271. We are rebels

  272. against the sovereign authority

  273. of the almighty God.

  274. We want that authority

  275. for ourselves.

  276. We want to be gods

  277. in our own lives.

  278. And as a result of that,

  279. we deserve the destruction

  280. that the Pharisees are promised.

  281. But this fate hinges

  282. on how we treat

  283. the authority of the Son,

  284. the last hope.

  285. The tenants thought,

  286. this is our chance.

  287. We take this guy out,

  288. the vineyard's ours,

  289. no more pesky owner

  290. getting in the way

  291. of my plans for my life.

  292. Are we going to respond

  293. the same way?

  294. Or will we agree

  295. with the psalm?

  296. Will we see the authority

  297. of Christ as marvelous?

  298. Will we see the authority

  299. of Christ as the authority

  300. of God,

  301. who disciplines us

  302. not to break us down,

  303. but so that we can bear

  304. the peaceful fruit

  305. of righteousness?

  306. Instead of seeking

  307. to exalt ourselves,

  308. will we yield

  309. to the authority

  310. of our creator

  311. as revealed in Christ?

  312. This is the command

  313. that Christ gives

  314. in the beginning

  315. of the Gospel of Mark

  316. in chapter 1,

  317. verse 15.

  318. The time is fulfilled

  319. and the kingdom of God

  320. is at hand.

  321. Repent

  322. and believe

  323. in the Gospel.

  324. Repent.

  325. Recognize that you are

  326. a rebel.

  327. Not just that you rebel,

  328. but that you are

  329. a rebel.

  330. And that we are in need

  331. of a full overhaul

  332. of being.

  333. A new birth.

  334. And believe

  335. in the good news

  336. of the authority

  337. of Christ.

  338. That he deserves

  339. that authority

  340. as heir

  341. and that he wields it

  342. with wisdom,

  343. strength,

  344. and perfect love.

  345. That instead of attempting

  346. to take that authority

  347. for ourselves,

  348. a task that is guaranteed

  349. to fail,

  350. we seize the opportunity

  351. to be co-heirs

  352. with Christ

  353. as fellow children

  354. of God.

  355. Believe that in his sacrifice

  356. of his life,

  357. he took the righteous

  358. wrath of God

  359. upon himself for you.

  360. And that by faith

  361. in him

  362. and his substitutionary

  363. death and glorious

  364. resurrection,

  365. you can be brought

  366. back to life.

  367. To live a life

  368. that's pleasing to him

  369. and worthy of him.

  370. We're not just people

  371. who occasionally rebel,

  372. who just need to stop

  373. rebelling and then

  374. everything will be fine.

  375. Our identity

  376. apart from Christ

  377. is marked

  378. by our foolish rebellion.

  379. The Greek word

  380. for sin

  381. means to miss

  382. the mark.

  383. But it's not that

  384. we're firing an arrow

  385. at a bullseye

  386. and we just miss

  387. by a few inches.

  388. If the bullseye

  389. is over there,

  390. I'm firing my arrow

  391. over here.

  392. That's the foolishness

  393. of our rebellion.

  394. Through faith in Christ,

  395. he turns us around,

  396. gives us a new heart,

  397. and a new desire for

  398. and closeness

  399. with himself.

  400. But a huge part of that

  401. is submission

  402. to his authority.

  403. So let's boil this

  404. authority thing down.

  405. We've got three

  406. loci of authority

  407. that this text

  408. is telling us

  409. to submit to.

  410. The entire Gospel of Mark

  411. is all about Jesus.

  412. Who he is

  413. and what that requires

  414. of us.

  415. Such a task revolves

  416. around how we view

  417. his authority.

  418. Now the Pharisees

  419. came to Jesus

  420. with that question,

  421. however insincere it was.

  422. And Jesus' answer was,

  423. well, if you're not

  424. willing to take a stand

  425. when it comes to

  426. John the Baptist's authority,

  427. you sure can't handle me.

  428. So, I won't tell you plainly.

  429. But I will tell you

  430. in this parable.

  431. So the first

  432. and greatest authority

  433. that we are to submit to

  434. is the authority

  435. of Christ.

  436. Which is,

  437. as he notes in verse 11,

  438. the authority

  439. of the Lord.

  440. Instead of seeking

  441. to save ourselves,

  442. he tells us

  443. to put ourselves

  444. under his lordship.

  445. He is our Lord

  446. and our Savior.

  447. In our thoughts,

  448. in our words,

  449. and in our actions.

  450. And this isn't just

  451. a lofty,

  452. God's out there

  453. and I've just got to

  454. do what he says,

  455. I can ignore the people

  456. around me.

  457. It is our submission

  458. to his authority

  459. that informs

  460. and necessitates

  461. our submission

  462. to earthly authorities.

  463. It's because Christ

  464. is our Lord

  465. that we submit

  466. to our parents.

  467. It's because Christ

  468. is our Lord

  469. that we submit

  470. to our bosses.

  471. It's because Christ

  472. is our Lord

  473. that we submit

  474. to the police officer

  475. who pulls us over

  476. for driving 20,

  477. 15, 10, 5,

  478. or 1 mile

  479. past the speed limit.

  480. Christ is to have

  481. authority

  482. over every aspect

  483. of our life.

  484. And he wields

  485. that authority

  486. completely,

  487. lovingly,

  488. and wondrously.

  489. Now the second

  490. tier of authority

  491. is the word.

  492. We view the scripture

  493. as fully authoritative

  494. and fully true

  495. because of Christ.

  496. This whole parable

  497. is soaked

  498. in scripture.

  499. Isaiah 5,

  500. Psalm 118,

  501. callbacks to

  502. 2 Chronicles 36,

  503. 15 to 16,

  504. which says this,

  505. The Lord,

  506. the God of their fathers,

  507. sent persistently

  508. to them

  509. by his messengers

  510. because he had

  511. compassion on his people

  512. and on his dwelling place.

  513. But they kept

  514. mocking the messengers

  515. of God,

  516. despising his words,

  517. and scoffing

  518. at his prophets

  519. until the wrath

  520. of the Lord

  521. rose against his people

  522. until there was

  523. no remedy.

  524. Christ is showing us

  525. that God is truly

  526. revealed in the scriptures

  527. and we are to submit

  528. to its view

  529. of the world,

  530. to its view of us,

  531. and to its view

  532. of God.

  533. Lastly, however,

  534. and this may be surprising

  535. to some of you,

  536. this authority

  537. is applied

  538. to the elders

  539. of the church.

  540. Let's take another look

  541. at verses 9 and 10.

  542. What will the owner

  543. of the vineyard do?

  544. He will come

  545. and destroy the tenants

  546. and give the vineyard

  547. to others.

  548. Have you not read

  549. this scripture?

  550. The stone

  551. that the builders

  552. rejected

  553. has become

  554. the cornerstone.

  555. Who are these others

  556. that the owner

  557. is giving the vineyard to?

  558. Immediately,

  559. it's a reference

  560. to the gospel

  561. going out to Gentiles.

  562. Ultimately,

  563. it's the gospel

  564. going out from the church.

  565. In redemptive history,

  566. Christ is signaling

  567. that the call

  568. that was initially

  569. confined to Israel

  570. was always meant

  571. to extend beyond them

  572. as well.

  573. What does it mean

  574. for Christ

  575. to be the cornerstone?

  576. Not only is he

  577. the Jewish Messiah,

  578. but Paul,

  579. in Ephesians,

  580. understands this

  581. to be a reference

  582. to the church.

  583. When he says,

  584. speaking to the Ephesians,

  585. you are fellow citizens

  586. with the saints

  587. and members

  588. of the household of God,

  589. built on the foundation

  590. of the apostles

  591. and prophets,

  592. Christ Jesus himself

  593. being the cornerstone,

  594. in whom the whole structure

  595. being joined together

  596. grows into a holy temple

  597. in the Lord.

  598. The church draws

  599. from all nations.

  600. And there are men

  601. who have been called

  602. to authority

  603. in the church,

  604. namely the elders.

  605. Hebrews 13, 17.

  606. Obey your leaders

  607. and submit to them,

  608. for they are keeping

  609. watch over your souls

  610. as those who will have

  611. to give an account.

  612. Let them do this

  613. with joy

  614. and not with groaning,

  615. for that would be

  616. of no advantage to you.

  617. Let us also submit

  618. with joy

  619. and not with groaning.

  620. First,

  621. to the all-encompassing

  622. authority of the Son.

  623. also,

  624. to the all-penetrating

  625. authority of his word,

  626. and then to the loving,

  627. wise leadership

  628. of the elders

  629. in the church

  630. of which he is

  631. the cornerstone.

  632. Let's pray.

  633. Amen.

  634. Heavenly Father,

  635. we are sobered

  636. by your word.

  637. The plight of these tenants

  638. who,

  639. like us,

  640. Lord,

  641. have rejected

  642. your word.

  643. Lord,

  644. I pray that you continue

  645. to soften our hearts,

  646. that you continue

  647. to draw us

  648. toward yourself,

  649. that we seek you

  650. in your word

  651. and through prayer.

  652. And Lord,

  653. that when we fall,

  654. that when we fall

  655. into sin,

  656. that we heed,

  657. that we heed your warnings,

  658. that we heed your instruction,

  659. that we submit

  660. to your authority.

  661. Lord,

  662. I pray that we,

  663. I pray that we trust you,

  664. knowing that you,

  665. because you created us

  666. and you gave us

  667. our purpose,

  668. Lord,

  669. that you will,

  670. that you will fulfill

  671. that purpose.

  672. Lord,

  673. anyone here,

  674. Lord,

  675. who has not

  676. taken you by faith,

  677. I pray that you

  678. soften their hearts

  679. and draw them

  680. towards yourself.

  681. And for those of us,

  682. Lord,

  683. who have,

  684. I pray that you

  685. kindle our love for you

  686. and our love

  687. for one another.

  688. I pray these things

  689. in the name of your Son,

  690. Jesus Christ,

  691. and by the power

  692. of your Holy Spirit.

  693. Amen.
