  1. Well, good evening.

  2. Tonight we're looking at the Gospel of Mark, chapter 14, verses 1 through 31.

    Mark 14:1–31

  3. I'll read it in just a minute, but as you're turning there, let me give a little brief introduction.

  4. So in 1997, MasterCard began a memorable series of advertisements entitled Priceless.

  5. The ad campaign is run in 98 countries and 46 languages over the past 17 years with many variations on the same theme.

  6. Maybe you recognize it already, but here's one.

  7. There's a picture of a one-year-old playing with a cardboard box.

  8. And it says this, most popular toy for toddler, $500.

  9. Goodness, did you realize that?

  10. Most popular toy for toddler, cost $500.

  11. Most popular stuffed animal for a toddler, $350.

  12. Most popular picture book for a toddler, $60.

  13. Watching her play with a cardboard box instead, priceless.

  14. Then there's one with a dad bringing his son to a baseball game.

  15. Two tickets, $28.

  16. Hot dog, soda, and popcorn, $18.

  17. An autographed baseball, $45.

  18. Having a real conversation with an 11-year-old son, priceless.

  19. Now, all these ads end in the same way, right?

  20. There are some things money can't buy.

  21. For everything else, there's MasterCard.

  22. Now, all joking aside, what is priceless to you?

  23. What's something that you would never trade, never sell, and never give away just to a random person?

  24. Or even to a close friend?

  25. What's something that you hope to keep with you for the rest of your life?

  26. Now, maybe it's a physical thing.

  27. Maybe it's a book of photos or memories.

  28. Maybe it's a handwritten note or series of notes from someone significant in your life.

  29. Maybe it's a painting or an antique or a family heirloom passed down from one generation to another.

  30. Maybe it's an experience or a memory that you would only share with someone that you deeply trust and respect.

  31. Maybe you've received such a precious, priceless gift.

  32. Maybe someone else has shared something with you or given something to you that's truly priceless.

  33. In tonight's passage, we see two people who do something totally unexpected.

  34. They give a priceless gift to someone else.

  35. So let me read Mark 14.

  36. It's a bit of a long passage, but we're reading verse 1 through 31.

  37. We're going to focus in on two parts of it.

  38. So Mark 14, beginning at verse 1.

  39. It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

  40. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him, Jesus, how to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

  41. For they said, not during the feast, but lest there be an uproar from the people.

  42. And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,

  43. as he was reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly.

  44. And she broke the flask and poured it over his head.

  45. There were some who said to themselves indignantly,

  46. why was the ointment wasted like that?

  47. For this ointment could have been sold for more than 300 denarii, a year's wages, and given to the poor.

  48. And they scolded her.

  49. But Jesus said, leave her alone.

  50. Why do you trouble her?

  51. She has done a beautiful thing to me.

  52. For you always have the poor with you.

  53. And whenever you want, you can do good for them.

  54. But you will not always have me.

  55. She has done what she could.

  56. She has anointed my body beforehand for burial.

  57. And truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world,

  58. what she has done will be told in memory of her.

  59. Then Judas Iscariot, who is one of the twelve,

  60. went to the chief priests in order to betray him,

  61. in order to betray Jesus to them.

  62. And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money.

  63. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.

  64. And on the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb,

  65. his disciples said to him,

  66. Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?

  67. And he sent two of his disciples and said to them,

  68. Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.

  69. Follow him.

  70. And wherever he enters, say to the master of the house,

  71. The teacher says, Where is my guest room,

  72. where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?

  73. And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready.

  74. There, prepare for us.

  75. And the disciples set out and went to the city,

  76. and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

  77. And when it was evening, he came with the twelve.

  78. And as they were reclining a table and eating,

  79. Jesus said, Truly I say to you,

  80. one of you will betray me,

  81. one who is eating with me.

  82. They began to be sorrowful,

  83. and to say to him one after another,

  84. Is it I?

  85. He said to them,

  86. It is one of the twelve,

  87. one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.

  88. For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him.

  89. But woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.

  90. It would have been better for that man if he had never been born.

  91. And as they were eating,

  92. he took bread.

  93. And after blessing it, he broke it and gave it to them and said,

  94. Take.

  95. This is my body.

  96. And he took a cup,

  97. and when he had given thanks,

  98. he gave it to them,

  99. and they all drank of it.

  100. And he said to them,

  101. This is my blood of the covenant,

  102. which is poured out for many.

  103. Truly I say to you,

  104. I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine

  105. until that day when I drink it new

  106. in the kingdom of God.

  107. And when they had sung a hymn,

  108. they went out to the Mount of Olives.

  109. And Jesus said to them,

  110. You will all fall away.

  111. For it is written,

  112. I will strike the shepherd,

  113. and the sheep will be scattered.

  114. But after I am raised up,

  115. I will go before you to Galilee.

  116. Peter said to him,

  117. Even though they all fall away,

  118. I will not.

  119. And Jesus said to him,

  120. Truly I tell you,

  121. this very night,

  122. before the rooster crows twice,

  123. you will deny me three times.

  124. But he said emphatically,

  125. If I must die with you,

  126. I will not deny you.

  127. And they all said the same.

  128. This passage is actually a pretty dark passage.

  129. It begins with people plotting

  130. to kill Jesus.

  131. And then talks about

  132. one of his disciples

  133. who makes an agreement

  134. to hand him over

  135. for some money.

  136. And then Jesus is telling

  137. his disciples

  138. that one of them,

  139. one of the twelve,

  140. those who had been closest to him

  141. for his earthly ministry,

  142. one of them

  143. would betray him.

  144. And in the end,

  145. he says,

  146. You're all going to

  147. leave me alone.

  148. You're all going to fall away.

  149. But in the midst of this passage,

  150. in the midst of a pretty dark passage,

  151. there's two

  152. points of light

  153. that we might say.

  154. We see two people

  155. who do something

  156. totally unexpected.

  157. They give a priceless gift.

  158. They pour out

  159. their most precious possession

  160. in an act of lavish generosity.

  161. So first we see a woman

  162. who pours out

  163. an alabaster jar

  164. of costly ointment,

  165. perfume,

  166. on Jesus.

  167. And then we see Jesus

  168. symbolically preparing

  169. to pour out

  170. his body

  171. and his blood,

  172. his very life

  173. for his disciples.

  174. Now in the structure

  175. of the passage,

  176. both of these acts

  177. of lavish generosity

  178. are surrounded

  179. on both sides

  180. by acts

  181. that are self-serving

  182. and self-seeking.

  183. So verse 1 and 2

  184. describes the plot

  185. to kill Jesus.

  186. Verse 3 through 9

  187. describes the woman

  188. pouring out

  189. her treasure on Jesus.

  190. And then verses 10 and 11

  191. describe Judas

  192. who agrees to betray Jesus

  193. for some money.

  194. And then verse 17 through 21,

  195. Jesus says one of his disciples

  196. will betray him.

  197. And then Jesus

  198. symbolically

  199. gives his disciples

  200. his body and his blood

  201. demonstrating what he's going

  202. to do for them.

  203. And then right afterwards

  204. he says,

  205. you're all going to fall away.

  206. So in the midst of this,

  207. of these dark moments

  208. of failure,

  209. of human failure,

  210. I want to focus in

  211. on these two unexpected acts

  212. of generosity

  213. and then ask what we can learn

  214. from each of them.

  215. So first,

  216. let's look at the woman.

  217. In verses 3 through 9,

  218. she pours out

  219. her most precious

  220. possession

  221. on Jesus.

  222. Now,

  223. what she does here

  224. is totally unexpected.

  225. Jesus is

  226. at somebody's house

  227. reclining at the table

  228. probably after a meal

  229. with his disciples

  230. and a woman enters.

  231. Now,

  232. in John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  233. we learn that this woman

  234. is Mary.

  235. But here in Mark,

  236. she's left unnamed.

  237. There's also a similar story

  238. in Luke chapter 7,

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  239. but several of the details

  240. in that story

  241. are different.

  242. So,

  243. there's probably

  244. two different occasions

  245. going on.

  246. So,

  247. we're just going to focus

  248. on this story

  249. right now.

  250. But if you want,

  251. you can compare it

  252. with the one in Matthew

  253. and in John

  254. because this story

  255. appears in both Matthew

  256. and John.

  257. Now,

  258. in that culture,

  259. women were not supposed

  260. to interrupt

  261. a group of men

  262. who were talking

  263. unless they were coming

  264. in to serve food.

  265. That was the cultural

  266. expectation.

  267. But this woman

  268. doesn't follow

  269. the cultural expectation.

  270. She comes in

  271. and she comes

  272. right to Jesus

  273. and she breaks

  274. open this jar

  275. and pours it out

  276. on his head

  277. and all over.

  278. It's just,

  279. it's just,

  280. Mark describes it

  281. as an alabaster flask

  282. of ointment

  283. of pure nard

  284. very costly

  285. worth 300 denarii.

  286. That's a year's wages.

  287. One denarii

  288. was a day's wages.

  289. So,

  290. 300,

  291. that's about a year.

  292. So,

  293. I don't know

  294. what you think

  295. a year's wages is.

  296. Say,

  297. 40,000 bucks,

  298. 50,000 bucks,

  299. whatever you want

  300. to call the median wage.

  301. Probably,

  302. this would have been

  303. a family heirloom

  304. passed down

  305. from one generation

  306. to another.

  307. The most valuable thing

  308. that this woman owned.

  309. If she was a widow,

  310. it would have been

  311. her savings account

  312. and her insurance policy

  313. all rolled into one.

  314. The thing that,

  315. if everything

  316. goes downhill,

  317. you can sell this

  318. and you'll survive.

  319. And she breaks the jar

  320. and she pours it out

  321. all over Jesus' body.

  322. Which meant

  323. she didn't just

  324. pour out a couple drops

  325. and then close the lid.

  326. She broke it,

  327. which meant

  328. you couldn't

  329. close it ever again.

  330. It was

  331. broken

  332. and poured out

  333. and gone.

  334. It's an act of

  335. total,

  336. irreversible,

  337. lavish generosity

  338. and devotion

  339. toward Jesus.

  340. Now,

  341. the disciples

  342. are a little weirded out.

  343. And probably

  344. you would be too

  345. if this happened to you.

  346. You know,

  347. imagine if after church

  348. some of us decide

  349. to go out for pizza.

  350. Sometimes we do that.

  351. Occasionally.

  352. Right?

  353. And while we're sitting

  354. in the booth

  355. waiting for our pizza

  356. to come,

  357. somebody comes in

  358. and gives you

  359. a $50,000 check.

  360. And everybody else

  361. sees exactly

  362. what it says

  363. on the check.

  364. Or,

  365. they pour out

  366. this bottle

  367. of perfume

  368. worth $50,000.

  369. And,

  370. you all know

  371. what it is.

  372. I mean,

  373. I'd be sort of embarrassed.

  374. I wouldn't know

  375. what to do.

  376. I mean,

  377. I might be thinking

  378. what the disciples

  379. are thinking.

  380. You know,

  381. wouldn't it be

  382. more responsible

  383. to give that money

  384. to the poor?

  385. I mean,

  386. really?

  387. Especially to

  388. just pour it out

  389. and waste it.

  390. I mean,

  391. do I really deserve

  392. that?

  393. Do I really deserve

  394. $50,000

  395. more than everybody else

  396. who's sitting next to me

  397. at the table?

  398. Isn't this

  399. sort of awkward?

  400. Now,

  401. there's some truth

  402. to what they're saying.

  403. Jesus acknowledged it

  404. in verse 7.

  405. He says,

  406. you will always

  407. have the poor

  408. with you.

  409. Whenever you want,

  410. you can do good

  411. for them.

  412. And that's not

  413. a dismissive remark.

  414. He's actually

  415. quoting from

  416. Deuteronomy 15,

  417. which says,

  418. where God said

  419. to the Israelites,

  420. the poor you will

  421. always have among you.

  422. Therefore,

  423. I command you,

  424. open wide your hand

  425. to your brother,

  426. to the needy

  427. and the poor

  428. in your land.

  429. So Jesus says here

  430. and in many other places,

  431. not only can we

  432. help the poor,

  433. we should love

  434. people around us

  435. who are poor.

  436. We should love

  437. our neighbors

  438. as ourselves,

  439. which means we should

  440. be as easy

  441. to meet

  442. our neighbors'

  443. needs

  444. as we are

  445. to meet

  446. our own.

  447. So that's the truth

  448. in their objection.

  449. But there are two

  450. problems with their

  451. objection.

  452. Now the first

  453. is their attitude.

  454. They're not only

  455. puzzled by something

  456. that they don't

  457. fully understand,

  458. they are angry

  459. and judgmental.

  460. They scold her,

  461. sort of like

  462. a naughty child.

  463. And if you

  464. carry this argument

  465. to its logical

  466. extreme,

  467. you could use it

  468. as an objection

  469. to any gift

  470. to anyone

  471. beyond bare

  472. necessities.

  473. How can you

  474. give anyone

  475. a gift that you

  476. don't really need

  477. when some people

  478. in the world

  479. are starving?

  480. How can you

  481. eat pizza

  482. when you could

  483. eat plain rice

  484. every day

  485. and you would

  486. still survive?

  487. survive?

  488. Maybe you'd

  489. lose a year

  490. or two

  491. off your life

  492. because of

  493. iron deficiency

  494. or something.

  495. Right?

  496. But depending

  497. on how far

  498. you go

  499. with that

  500. statement,

  501. it can be

  502. used in a

  503. way that's

  504. incredibly

  505. guilt-inducing

  506. and crippling.

  507. And that is

  508. not God's

  509. intention.

  510. God's intention

  511. is for people

  512. to share

  513. in the joy

  514. that he takes

  515. in showing

  516. mercy

  517. and generosity.

  518. When God

  519. made the world,

  520. he didn't only

  521. make it useful

  522. and functional,

  523. he also

  524. made it

  525. beautiful.

  526. And he

  527. made us

  528. so that

  529. in enjoying

  530. his beauty

  531. that we

  532. might be

  533. motivated

  534. to extend

  535. it,

  536. even

  537. sacrificially,

  538. to others.

  539. So that's

  540. the first

  541. problem.

  542. But the

  543. second problem

  544. is that they

  545. fail to

  546. perceive

  547. the unsurpassed

  548. beauty of

  549. Jesus.

  550. Jesus says

  551. she's done

  552. a beautiful

  553. thing.

  554. He doesn't

  555. just say

  556. be nice to

  557. her,

  558. be polite

  559. to her,

  560. don't be rude

  561. to her.

  562. She was

  563. trying to

  564. do her

  565. best.

  566. She was

  567. trying to

  568. make a

  569. nice gesture.

  570. Maybe she

  571. didn't really

  572. think it

  573. through.

  574. Maybe she

  575. was just

  576. being emotional,

  577. you know,

  578. but you

  579. should be

  580. kind to

  581. her.

  582. No!

  583. He says

  584. she understands

  585. something that

  586. you don't.

  587. What she

  588. did was

  589. absolutely

  590. appropriate.

  591. She anointed

  592. me because

  593. she realized

  594. that I'm

  595. the Messiah,

  596. the King

  597. of Israel,

  598. and the

  599. Son of

  600. God.

  601. she poured

  602. out her

  603. most precious

  604. treasure on

  605. me because

  606. there's no

  607. one else in

  608. the world

  609. more worthy

  610. of such a

  611. gift.

  612. You see,

  613. if somebody

  614. came up to

  615. you and gave

  616. you that

  617. $50,000

  618. check,

  619. and other

  620. people made

  621. some objections,

  622. and you said,

  623. well, hey,

  624. you'll always have

  625. poor people to

  626. give it to,

  627. but you won't

  628. always have

  629. me,

  630. that would

  631. be very

  632. arrogant.

  633. Right?

  634. I mean,

  635. if you've got

  636. that amount

  637. of money,

  638. there's at least

  639. an obligation

  640. to give some

  641. of it away

  642. to help

  643. other people

  644. and not use

  645. it all on

  646. yourself.

  647. But Jesus

  648. is saying,

  649. I'm not

  650. just an

  651. ordinary human

  652. being.

  653. I'm the one

  654. who is,

  655. I'm the king.

  656. I'm the one

  657. who is more

  658. worthy of

  659. your devotion

  660. and of

  661. everything in

  662. the world.

  663. I'm the one

  664. who's made

  665. everything in

  666. the world.

  667. And the

  668. woman saw

  669. that.

  670. She saw

  671. that there

  672. was something

  673. about Jesus

  674. that attracted

  675. her and

  676. that motivated

  677. her to

  678. pour out

  679. her most

  680. precious

  681. treasure on

  682. him.

  683. Because you

  684. see,

  685. what the

  686. woman does

  687. with her

  688. costly

  689. ointment

  690. is a

  691. picture of

  692. what Jesus

  693. is preparing

  694. to do

  695. with his

  696. very own

  697. body

  698. and blood,

  699. his life.

  700. She breaks

  701. it and

  702. pours it

  703. out.

  704. And the

  705. same

  706. words,

  707. the same

  708. concepts

  709. are used

  710. later in

  711. this passage

  712. in the

  713. second example

  714. of a

  715. lavish

  716. gift.

  717. Verses

  718. 23-25,

  719. says,

  720. as they

  721. were eating,

  722. Jesus took

  723. bread and

  724. after blessing

  725. it,

  726. he broke

  727. it and

  728. gave it

  729. to them

  730. and said,

  731. take this

  732. is my

  733. body.

  734. And he

  735. took a

  736. cup and

  737. when he

  738. had given

  739. thanks,

  740. he gave

  741. it to

  742. them and

  743. they all

  744. drank of

  745. it and

  746. he said

  747. to them,

  748. this is

  749. my

  750. blood

  751. of the

  752. covenant

  753. which is

  754. poured

  755. out

  756. for many.

  757. people

  758. said,

  759. now the

  760. context

  761. in which

  762. Jesus said

  763. these

  764. words was

  765. a Passover

  766. meal.

  767. I don't

  768. know if

  769. you've

  770. ever had

  771. the

  772. opportunity

  773. to

  774. visit

  775. a

  776. Passover

  777. meal

  778. or

  779. experience

  780. a

  781. Passover

  782. meal.

  783. Passover

  784. happens once

  785. a year

  786. in the

  787. spring.

  788. And according

  789. to the

  790. Old Testament,

  791. every head

  792. of household

  793. was required

  794. to travel

  795. to Jerusalem

  796. to celebrate

  797. Passover.

  798. Passover.

  799. Many times

  800. the whole

  801. family would

  802. go as

  803. well.

  804. People would

  805. gather

  806. together,

  807. they'd eat

  808. a meal

  809. together as

  810. sort of a

  811. big extended

  812. family in

  813. somebody's

  814. house,

  815. remembering

  816. how God

  817. had delivered

  818. them from

  819. slavery in

  820. Egypt and

  821. looking forward

  822. to the day

  823. when the

  824. Messiah would

  825. come and

  826. establish God's

  827. kingdom on

  828. earth in its

  829. fullness.

  830. And there

  831. was an

  832. established

  833. routine to

  834. the meal.

  835. And if

  836. you visit

  837. a Jewish

  838. Passover

  839. meal,

  840. many of

  841. these things,

  842. you will

  843. still experience

  844. them.

  845. If you

  846. have the

  847. opportunity

  848. to visit

  849. one.

  850. So the

  851. host of

  852. the meal

  853. would break

  854. bread,

  855. unleavened

  856. bread,

  857. to remember

  858. that when

  859. they were

  860. leaving Egypt

  861. they were

  862. in a hurry.

  863. They didn't

  864. have time

  865. to wait

  866. for the

  867. yeast to

  868. make the

  869. bread rise,

  870. so they

  871. ate

  872. unleavened

  873. bread.

  874. So that's

  875. why they

  876. would always

  877. eat unleavened

  878. bread

  879. throughout

  880. Passover.

  881. The host

  882. of the meal

  883. would break

  884. the bread,

  885. pronounce a

  886. blessing over

  887. it,

  888. and share

  889. with everyone

  890. at the

  891. table,

  892. remembering

  893. God's

  894. provision for

  895. his people.

  896. when they

  897. left Egypt

  898. and through

  899. the wilderness.

  900. And then

  901. during the

  902. meal they

  903. would share

  904. four cups

  905. of wine

  906. or grape

  907. juice,

  908. thanking God

  909. for bringing

  910. them into

  911. the promised

  912. land where

  913. they could

  914. enjoy,

  915. where they

  916. could have

  917. freedom and

  918. joy,

  919. and looking

  920. forward to the

  921. day when the

  922. Messiah would

  923. return.

  924. bread.

  925. They would

  926. eat unleavened

  927. bread,

  928. they'd eat

  929. bitter herbs,

  930. remembering the

  931. bitterness of

  932. their slavery,

  933. and they'd

  934. eat a

  935. roast lamb,

  936. remembering the

  937. night when God

  938. had told the

  939. Israelites to

  940. kill a lamb

  941. for each

  942. family and to

  943. put the blood

  944. on their

  945. doorposts.

  946. And he

  947. said,

  948. when I see

  949. the blood,

  950. I will pass

  951. over you.

  952. When the

  953. destroying

  954. angel comes,

  955. he will see

  956. the blood and

  957. pass over you,

  958. and you

  959. will be

  960. safe.

  961. So the

  962. whole routine

  963. of the meal

  964. emphasized

  965. remembrance of

  966. what God

  967. had done in

  968. the past in

  969. the Exodus,

  970. and also

  971. anticipation of

  972. what God

  973. would do in

  974. the future,

  975. when he

  976. would come

  977. again and

  978. lead them to

  979. this ultimate

  980. freedom.

  981. Now in the

  982. middle of this

  983. meal,

  984. with a very

  985. established routine

  986. that was followed

  987. pretty much the

  988. same way each

  989. year,

  990. Jesus does

  991. something completely

  992. off the

  993. script,

  994. completely

  995. unexpected.

  996. He takes

  997. the bread,

  998. he blesses

  999. it,

  1000. thanks God

  1001. for it,

  1002. he breaks

  1003. it,

  1004. and gave

  1005. it.

  1006. All that's

  1007. normal.

  1008. And then

  1009. he says,

  1010. take,

  1011. this is my

  1012. body.

  1013. And then

  1014. he takes

  1015. the cup of

  1016. wine,

  1017. and gives

  1018. thanks,

  1019. and gave

  1020. it to

  1021. them,

  1022. and he

  1023. says,

  1024. this is my

  1025. blood.

  1026. Do you

  1027. realize how

  1028. shocking those

  1029. words would

  1030. be in the

  1031. context of a

  1032. Jewish Passover

  1033. meal?

  1034. Maybe you've

  1035. gotten used to

  1036. hearing them at

  1037. communion services,

  1038. so they feel

  1039. like some of

  1040. the verses in

  1041. the Bible that

  1042. are most familiar

  1043. to you,

  1044. but do you

  1045. realize how

  1046. shocking that

  1047. would be for

  1048. Jesus to say,

  1049. this Passover

  1050. meal is about

  1051. me?

  1052. What he was

  1053. saying,

  1054. symbolically,

  1055. was,

  1056. I am the

  1057. true Passover

  1058. lamb,

  1059. whose body

  1060. will be broken,

  1061. and blood

  1062. will be poured

  1063. out,

  1064. to save you

  1065. from God's

  1066. judgment.

  1067. He's saying,

  1068. I'm the

  1069. redeemer,

  1070. I've come to

  1071. pay the price

  1072. to buy you

  1073. out of

  1074. slavery,

  1075. by giving

  1076. my very own

  1077. life in your

  1078. place.

  1079. He's saying,

  1080. my blood is

  1081. the sign and

  1082. the seal of

  1083. a new

  1084. covenant,

  1085. a new

  1086. relationship,

  1087. a new

  1088. arrangement

  1089. between God

  1090. and his

  1091. people.

  1092. When Moses

  1093. instituted the

  1094. covenant at

  1095. Mount Sinai,

  1096. he sprinkled

  1097. blood on the

  1098. people.

  1099. It was a

  1100. sign that the

  1101. covenant was

  1102. signed and

  1103. sealed.

  1104. Jesus said,

  1105. I'm here to

  1106. set up a new

  1107. covenant, a

  1108. new basis

  1109. on which people

  1110. can relate to

  1111. God,

  1112. through the

  1113. sacrifice that

  1114. I am about

  1115. to make.

  1116. I'm here to

  1117. fulfill what

  1118. the Passover

  1119. was always

  1120. pointing forward

  1121. to, the

  1122. day of the

  1123. Messiah.

  1124. Now, Jesus'

  1125. actions were

  1126. symbolic.

  1127. He was

  1128. pointing forward

  1129. to what he

  1130. would do on

  1131. the cross,

  1132. when his body

  1133. would be broken

  1134. and his blood

  1135. would be

  1136. poured out.

  1137. So, Jesus

  1138. pours out his

  1139. life for his

  1140. disciples in

  1141. this act.

  1142. Now, the

  1143. woman poured

  1144. out her most

  1145. precious treasure

  1146. on Jesus because

  1147. she saw that

  1148. Jesus was

  1149. surpassingly

  1150. worthy.

  1151. worthy.

  1152. But Jesus,

  1153. when Jesus

  1154. poured out his

  1155. blood for the

  1156. disciples,

  1157. he poured out

  1158. his blood

  1159. not because

  1160. he saw that

  1161. we were

  1162. worthy.

  1163. Right?

  1164. That's why

  1165. right before

  1166. and right after

  1167. he does this,

  1168. he says,

  1169. one of you is

  1170. going to betray

  1171. me and you're

  1172. all going to

  1173. abandon me.

  1174. And they

  1175. say, oh,

  1176. no, no, no,

  1177. I certainly

  1178. wouldn't.

  1179. And Jesus

  1180. says, oh,

  1181. yes, you

  1182. will, even

  1183. before the

  1184. night's out.

  1185. You're going

  1186. to fail.

  1187. But he

  1188. says, but I'm

  1189. not going

  1190. to the cross.

  1191. I'm not

  1192. giving my

  1193. life for you

  1194. because you're

  1195. worthy.

  1196. I'm giving

  1197. my life

  1198. because I

  1199. love you.

  1200. Because I've

  1201. called you to

  1202. belong to me.

  1203. Jesus poured

  1204. out his most

  1205. precious treasure

  1206. on people who

  1207. would betray

  1208. him, deny

  1209. him, abandon

  1210. him, crucify

  1211. him.

  1212. He knew it

  1213. very well.

  1214. You see, in

  1215. his great love,

  1216. this is the

  1217. heart of this

  1218. passage, in

  1219. his great love,

  1220. Jesus lavished

  1221. his most

  1222. precious treasure,

  1223. his very own

  1224. self, his body

  1225. and his blood

  1226. on us.

  1227. Romans 5, 8

  1228. says, God

  1229. demonstrates his

  1230. love for us

  1231. in this.

  1232. While we were

  1233. still sinners,

  1234. Christ died

  1235. for us.

  1236. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  1237. chapter 1

  1238. says, Christ

  1239. Jesus came

  1240. into the

  1241. world to

  1242. save sinners.

  1243. Jesus poured

  1244. out everything

  1245. for us

  1246. so that we

  1247. could become

  1248. his priceless

  1249. treasure.

  1250. A possession

  1251. that he will

  1252. never sell

  1253. or trade

  1254. or lose

  1255. because he's

  1256. paid for us

  1257. such a great

  1258. price.

  1259. Ephesians 1

  1260. says, in

  1261. Jesus Christ,

  1262. we have

  1263. redemption.

  1264. That means

  1265. we have

  1266. freedom from

  1267. bondage

  1268. through his

  1269. blood.

  1270. The forgiveness

  1271. of our

  1272. trespasses

  1273. according to

  1274. the riches

  1275. of his

  1276. grace which

  1277. he lavished

  1278. upon us.

  1279. 1 Peter 1

  1280. says, you

  1281. were ransomed

  1282. not with

  1283. perishable

  1284. things such

  1285. as silver

  1286. or gold,

  1287. but with

  1288. the precious

  1289. blood of

  1290. Jesus Christ.

  1291. Do you

  1292. ever wonder,

  1293. does God

  1294. really love

  1295. me?

  1296. How could

  1297. he love

  1298. me?

  1299. Someone so

  1300. small and

  1301. insignificant,

  1302. someone guilty

  1303. of sin and

  1304. full of shame.

  1305. Remember

  1306. this, Jesus

  1307. Christ, the

  1308. Son of God,

  1309. loved you

  1310. and gave

  1311. himself for

  1312. you.

  1313. every time

  1314. that you

  1315. take communion,

  1316. remember

  1317. that.

  1318. Jesus gave

  1319. his life

  1320. for you.

  1321. He says,

  1322. this is my

  1323. body,

  1324. broken

  1325. for you.

  1326. This is my

  1327. blood of

  1328. the new

  1329. covenant,

  1330. poured out

  1331. for many,

  1332. for everyone

  1333. who would

  1334. believe

  1335. and put

  1336. their trust

  1337. in him.

  1338. you see,

  1339. Jesus poured

  1340. out his

  1341. life for

  1342. us so

  1343. that we

  1344. might

  1345. become

  1346. his

  1347. treasure.

  1348. And so

  1349. that he

  1350. might become

  1351. our

  1352. greatest

  1353. treasure.

  1354. What's

  1355. your most

  1356. priceless

  1357. possession?

  1358. What are

  1359. the things

  1360. that you

  1361. would never

  1362. want to

  1363. lose,

  1364. would never

  1365. want to

  1366. sell,

  1367. would never

  1368. want to

  1369. trade?

  1370. may it

  1371. be Jesus

  1372. because he

  1373. gave his

  1374. life for

  1375. us.

  1376. Let's

  1377. pray.

  1378. Lord Jesus,

  1379. we see in

  1380. the act of

  1381. this woman

  1382. a picture

  1383. of what

  1384. our devotion

  1385. to you

  1386. ought to

  1387. look like

  1388. because you

  1389. are the

  1390. worthy

  1391. lamb of

  1392. God,

  1393. the king

  1394. of all

  1395. kings,

  1396. and the

  1397. lord of

  1398. all lords,

  1399. the son

  1400. of God,

  1401. the one

  1402. and only.

  1403. And yet,

  1404. Lord,

  1405. so often

  1406. we treasure

  1407. so many

  1408. other things.

  1409. we thank

  1410. you that

  1411. you were

  1412. devoted to

  1413. us,

  1414. that you

  1415. came and

  1416. poured out

  1417. your life

  1418. even unto

  1419. death.

  1420. While we

  1421. were still

  1422. sinners,

  1423. you died

  1424. for us.

  1425. Lord,

  1426. would you

  1427. impress upon

  1428. our hearts

  1429. the depth

  1430. of your

  1431. love for

  1432. us?

  1433. Lord,

  1434. would you

  1435. speak to

  1436. us tonight

  1437. as we

  1438. prepare to

  1439. receive the

  1440. lord's

  1441. supper

  1442. together,

  1443. that you

  1444. gave your

  1445. body and

  1446. your blood

  1447. that we

  1448. might become

  1449. your

  1450. treasure,

  1451. and that

  1452. you might

  1453. become our

  1454. greatest

  1455. treasure,

  1456. for you

  1457. are worthy.

  1458. We pray

  1459. this in

  1460. your name.

  1461. Amen.
