  1. Thank you.

  2. It's 63 minutes long.

  3. That's four hours in the 20s of three minutes.

  4. And this is one of the longest movies ever made in English.

  5. And when you watch it, at some point in the movie, you recognize just how long it is.

  6. You recognize that you're sitting on the couch for three hours and stuff in the middle of the movie.

  7. The other thing you'll notice is that the movie has several endings.

  8. A city is defended against people, but then assaults on people's self-made, a ring is destroyed, and a king is converted, and on and on.

  9. And so it goes.

  10. But it wasn't to be an annoying event in the movie or the book.

  11. It also calls to recognize that the story is over there.

  12. As grand as it is, it must have all of those endings in order to include all the generic strengths that have been done.

  13. The movie would actually be an interesting thing.

  14. Without it.

  15. You know, John ends like the Lord brings.

  16. He has multiple endings.

  17. Look at chapter 20.

  18. That chapter concludes by giving the reason why the book of John was written.

  19. Jesus has already been raised from the dead and appeared to the apostles, and things look like they can wrap up here pretty well.

  20. In fact, many more liberal biblical scholars say that chapter 21 shouldn't even be in this book for precisely that reason.

  21. It seems to act on to the ending of the book, which properly ends in chapter 20.

  22. But it seems to me that there are really good reasons to say that chapter 21 is original to the book.

  23. And therefore, the better argument is to see John, like the Lord of the Rings, having multiple endings.

  24. Each given the conclusion of a particular narrative thread that has woven its way throughout the book.

  25. So the gospel of John is incomplete without chapter 21.

  26. Our task tonight, therefore, is to determine what exactly this ending, chapter 21 of the book of John,

  27. tells us about the work of redemption that Jesus brought about through his death.

  28. So, we're going to take it up and read it now.

  29. It's page 907 in your pew Bibles, if you'd like to follow along.

  30. The gospel according to John, chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  31. After this, Jesus reveals himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.

  32. And he revealed himself in this way.

  33. Simon Peter, Thomas, called the twin,

  34. Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee,

  35. the sons of Zebedee,

  36. and two others of the disciples were together.

  37. Simon Peter said to them,

  38. I'm going fishing.

  39. And they said to him,

  40. We'll go with you.

  41. And they all went out and got into the boat.

  42. But that night, they caught nothing.

  43. Just as day was breaking,

  44. Jesus stood on the shore.

  45. And the disciples did not know it was Jesus.

  46. Jesus said to them,

  47. Children, do you have any fish?

  48. And they answered him,

  49. Nope.

  50. He said to them,

  51. Cast a net on the right side of the boat,

  52. and you will find some.

  53. So they cast it,

  54. and now they were not able to haul it in

  55. because of the quantity of fish.

  56. And that disciple whom Jesus loved,

  57. therefore, said to Peter,

  58. It's the Lord.

  59. And when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord,

  60. he put on his outer garment,

  61. for he was stripped for work.

  62. And he threw himself into the sea.

  63. And the other disciples came in the boat,

  64. dragging the net full of fish,

  65. for they were not far from the land,

  66. but about a hundred yards off.

  67. And when they got out onto the land,

  68. they saw a charcoal fire in place,

  69. with fish laid on it and red.

  70. And Jesus said to them,

  71. Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.

  72. So Simon Peter went aboard

  73. and hauled the net ashore full of large fish,

  74. a hundred and fifty-three of them.

  75. And although there were so many,

  76. the net was not torn.

  77. Jesus said to them,

  78. Come and have breakfast.

  79. Now, none of the disciples dared ask him,

  80. Who are you?

  81. They knew it was the Lord.

  82. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them,

  83. and so with the fish.

  84. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed

  85. to his disciples,

  86. after he was raised from the dead.

  87. And when they had finished breakfast,

  88. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  89. Simon, son of John,

  90. do you love me more than these?

  91. He said to him,

  92. Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  93. He said to him,

  94. Feed my lambs.

  95. He said to him a second time,

  96. Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  97. He said to him,

  98. Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  99. He said to him,

  100. Tend my sheep.

  101. He said to him the third time,

  102. Simon, son of John,

  103. do you love me?

  104. And Peter was grieved,

  105. because he said to him the third time,

  106. Do you love me?

  107. He said to him,

  108. Lord, you know everything.

  109. You know that I love you.

  110. And Jesus said to him,

  111. Feed my sheep.

  112. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  113. when you were young,

  114. you used to dress yourself

  115. and walk wherever you wanted.

  116. But when you are old,

  117. you will stretch out your hands

  118. and another will dress you

  119. and carry you

  120. where you do not want to go.

  121. This he said to show

  122. by what kind of death

  123. he was to glorify God.

  124. And after saying this,

  125. he said to him,

  126. Follow me.

  127. Peter turned and saw the disciple

  128. whom Jesus loved following them,

  129. the one who had also leaned against him

  130. during the supper,

  131. and said,

  132. Lord, who is it

  133. that is going to betray you?

  134. When Peter saw him,

  135. he said to Jesus,

  136. Lord, what about this man?

  137. Jesus said to him,

  138. If it's my will

  139. that he remain until I come,

  140. what is that to you?

  141. You follow me.

  142. So the saying spread abroad

  143. among the brothers

  144. that this disciple was not to die.

  145. Yet Jesus did not say to him

  146. that he was not to die,

  147. but if it is my will

  148. that he remain until I come,

  149. what is that to you?

  150. This is a disciple

  151. who is bearing witness

  152. about these things

  153. and who has written these things,

  154. and we know

  155. that his testimony is true.

  156. Now,

  157. there are also

  158. many other things

  159. that Jesus did.

  160. And were every one of them

  161. to be written,

  162. I suppose that the world itself

  163. could not contain

  164. the books

  165. that would be written.

  166. So, tonight I will argue

  167. that the point of chapter 21

  168. is this.

  169. Jesus' faithfulness

  170. restores

  171. what our faithlessness

  172. has lost.

  173. Jesus' faithfulness

  174. restores

  175. what our faithlessness

  176. has lost.

  177. We'll see this

  178. in four ways.

  179. First,

  180. Jesus' faithfulness

  181. restores meaning

  182. in his disciples' lives.

  183. notice here,

  184. the chapter opens

  185. after the disciples

  186. have seen the risen Lord.

  187. Jesus has appeared

  188. to them in chapter 20

  189. and given them a blessing.

  190. Peace be unto you.

  191. That greeting

  192. appears nowhere

  193. in the gospel

  194. before the resurrection.

  195. It seems not only

  196. to be a simple greeting

  197. but even more

  198. to tell the disciples

  199. something about

  200. their condition

  201. in the eyes of God

  202. as a result

  203. of the work of the cross.

  204. It will later form

  205. part of Paul's

  206. favorite greeting

  207. grace and peace

  208. to you.

  209. Christ has secured

  210. for them already

  211. the acceptance of God

  212. and therefore

  213. the immediate disciples

  214. and we,

  215. the followers of Christ

  216. centuries later

  217. have peace.

  218. But it seems unlikely

  219. that the apostles

  220. understood this peace

  221. at the moment.

  222. There's no evidence

  223. in this chapter

  224. of a clear

  225. spirit-filled

  226. mission and vision.

  227. We find the disciples

  228. in this chapter

  229. not busying themselves

  230. about the work

  231. of telling people

  232. about the resurrection,

  233. not working and striving

  234. eagerly to bring about

  235. the promised kingdom,

  236. but fishing.

  237. Now, why fishing?

  238. Well, this was their

  239. profession before

  240. they met Jesus

  241. and after their time

  242. with Jesus

  243. looks like it

  244. might be completed,

  245. they're not really sure

  246. what exactly

  247. they ought to do

  248. and so they take up

  249. their previous life.

  250. They go fishing.

  251. Now, we have

  252. the book of Acts

  253. and the bit of church

  254. history that has

  255. transpired between

  256. the apostles and us

  257. and so we know

  258. how the story ends.

  259. We know something

  260. of the meaning

  261. of the resurrection

  262. but it seems like

  263. the apostles don't.

  264. So they seem

  265. neither to have

  266. rejected Jesus

  267. nor to have been

  268. eagerly calling to mind

  269. all the things

  270. that he had said

  271. while he was with them

  272. in order to understand

  273. what the resurrection

  274. meant.

  275. They just were fishing.

  276. And besides,

  277. let's remember

  278. that these disciples

  279. didn't leave Jesus

  280. on good terms

  281. last time.

  282. They abandoned him

  283. in his darkest hour

  284. when the hour

  285. of Jesus' crucifixion

  286. came,

  287. the hour that he

  288. pleaded with them

  289. more than ever

  290. in his life

  291. for them to watch

  292. and pray with him

  293. because his soul

  294. was in agony.

  295. They slept.

  296. They abandoned.

  297. Their courage

  298. failed them

  299. in the heat of battle

  300. and they deserted.

  301. And now their leader

  302. has returned to them

  303. and what will he do

  304. with the deserters?

  305. Certainly any friendship

  306. between them

  307. and Jesus

  308. must now be

  309. in ruins.

  310. Imagine

  311. the greatest shame

  312. that you felt

  313. after you acted

  314. far less noble

  315. than you know

  316. you should have

  317. when you betrayed

  318. or abandoned

  319. a close friend.

  320. Knowing full well

  321. how terrible

  322. your actions were

  323. and then you have to

  324. face that person again.

  325. Can you imagine

  326. the shame

  327. that Peter felt

  328. after he betrayed

  329. the Lord three times

  330. and Jesus looked

  331. across the courtyard

  332. at him

  333. just as the rooster

  334. crowed?

  335. Surely now

  336. Jesus will have

  337. nothing to do

  338. with his disciples.

  339. That would be

  340. the just thing to do.

  341. And so the disciples

  342. drift.

  343. They spend their time

  344. fruitlessly

  345. and the author

  346. highlights this fruitlessness

  347. and vanity

  348. of their work

  349. by making it literal.

  350. They literally

  351. catch nothing.

  352. They're literally

  353. wasting their time.

  354. That is

  355. until Jesus arrives

  356. and at his command

  357. they acquire fish

  358. so numerous

  359. they have difficulty

  360. in hauling them in.

  361. There's a metaphor

  362. here I think.

  363. Jesus has called

  364. his apostles earlier

  365. and told them

  366. they would be

  367. fishers of men

  368. and here the only

  369. difference between

  370. their catching no fish

  371. and their catching

  372. far too many fish

  373. to manage

  374. is the fact that

  375. they are obedient

  376. to God.

  377. but God

  378. is ultimately

  379. responsible

  380. for the success

  381. of their efforts.

  382. This is true

  383. even in the evangelistic

  384. task they are given

  385. later.

  386. So

  387. Jesus' faithfulness

  388. restores meaning

  389. in the disciples'

  390. lives.

  391. Second

  392. Jesus' faithfulness

  393. restores the disciples'

  394. history.

  395. Restores the disciples'

  396. history.

  397. The second

  398. purpose of this story

  399. is to walk

  400. these disciples

  401. through the history

  402. of their discipleship.

  403. Do you recall

  404. where it was

  405. when Jesus first

  406. called many of

  407. these men

  408. to be the disciples?

  409. This story is given

  410. to us in Luke 5.

  411. There in that story

  412. Jesus comes to

  413. the disciples

  414. while they're

  415. fishing or they're

  416. in the boat.

  417. He employs one

  418. of their boats

  419. as a platform

  420. for his preaching

  421. and then he instructs

  422. them to cast their

  423. nets into the water

  424. and they catch

  425. so many fish

  426. the boats begin

  427. to sink.

  428. And only at that

  429. point when the nets

  430. are almost breaking

  431. Peter recognizes

  432. the power of Jesus

  433. and Jesus calls him

  434. to follow him.

  435. Peter at that point

  436. leaves his nets

  437. and immediately

  438. follows Jesus.

  439. And so begin

  440. three years of his life

  441. where Peter's

  442. impetuousness

  443. and stubbornness

  444. clash often

  445. with the wishes

  446. of Jesus

  447. and where he

  448. frequently misunderstands

  449. the doings of Jesus.

  450. And while over the course

  451. of these three years

  452. Peter seemed to show

  453. improvement,

  454. faithfulness,

  455. even a fierce loyalty

  456. it was only a

  457. superficial loyalty.

  458. For in the end

  459. Peter betrayed Jesus.

  460. Think of the bitter

  461. weeping he had

  462. when he betrayed him.

  463. We have no account

  464. of what Peter did

  465. between Good Friday

  466. and Easter Sunday.

  467. Was it spent

  468. mourning his

  469. unfaithfulness to Christ?

  470. Was he ever tempted

  471. to look at

  472. and apply to himself

  473. the Old Testament

  474. prophecies

  475. of the people of God

  476. abandoning their Lord?

  477. Did he weep more bitterly

  478. over the death

  479. of a comrade

  480. or the death

  481. of his courage?

  482. We can't be sure.

  483. But certainly

  484. there must have been

  485. a hint

  486. by this time

  487. in the story

  488. that Peter

  489. had squandered

  490. his opportunity.

  491. His history

  492. it seems

  493. would now be

  494. forever marred

  495. by the indelible

  496. stain

  497. of betraying

  498. the one he loved.

  499. But now

  500. that setting

  501. of the original call

  502. is being reconstructed.

  503. Look, the boat

  504. the fishermen

  505. the fish

  506. the Lord

  507. it's all there.

  508. God seems

  509. to be giving Peter

  510. a second chance

  511. to walk through

  512. his own history

  513. and this time

  514. to redeem it.

  515. But this is

  516. seen more clearly

  517. in the following section

  518. where Jesus

  519. restores Peter.

  520. We have already

  521. considered that

  522. the apostles

  523. all abandoned Jesus

  524. and Peter

  525. did so

  526. most obviously.

  527. Peter's boast

  528. before Jesus

  529. crucifixion

  530. was the loudest

  531. and the brashest.

  532. Even if all

  533. others deny you

  534. I will never

  535. deny you.

  536. I will even

  537. go to death

  538. with you

  539. but I will

  540. never deny you.

  541. But betray him

  542. he did.

  543. And it is ironic

  544. that the gospels

  545. give more attention

  546. to the details

  547. of Peter's betrayal

  548. than to the betrayal

  549. of any of the others

  550. except for Judas.

  551. Jesus said

  552. that all the apostles

  553. would abandon him

  554. but what about

  555. Bartholomew?

  556. We don't really

  557. know much about him.

  558. His boasting

  559. is absent.

  560. It didn't seem

  561. to boast

  562. that he was the best

  563. and would punch

  564. the bad guys

  565. in the face.

  566. His boasting

  567. is absent

  568. and his betrayal

  569. seems minimal

  570. in the text.

  571. He's gone

  572. but the gospel

  573. doesn't emphasize it.

  574. But Peter's boasting

  575. was loud

  576. and his betrayal

  577. is given

  578. in great detail.

  579. This is difficult

  580. you see.

  581. It introduces

  582. a problem.

  583. The ancient

  584. Greek philosophers

  585. were fond

  586. of a certain saying

  587. there is one thing

  588. that even the gods

  589. cannot do.

  590. Undo

  591. what has been done.

  592. That is

  593. the past

  594. cannot be altered

  595. even by the gods.

  596. And perhaps

  597. you feel that way

  598. sitting here today.

  599. Perhaps you are aware

  600. of your many failures.

  601. perhaps they run

  602. through your mind

  603. even as I'm speaking

  604. these words.

  605. Perhaps you can't

  606. break an addiction

  607. that plagues you

  608. every week.

  609. Perhaps you fight

  610. in vain

  611. against the temptation

  612. to compare

  613. your accomplishments

  614. to those

  615. of the people

  616. around you.

  617. Perhaps you have

  618. some betrayal

  619. that you committed

  620. embedded so deeply

  621. in your history

  622. that it has come

  623. to define

  624. the way you

  625. view yourself.

  626. The past

  627. cannot be altered.

  628. even by the gods.

  629. So what hope

  630. is there for you?

  631. Well I think

  632. this section

  633. is illuminating

  634. and it actually

  635. gives us great hope.

  636. You see

  637. Jesus

  638. in this section

  639. restores Peter

  640. by walking him

  641. through his failures.

  642. Look here

  643. we mentioned

  644. that the boats

  645. are there

  646. the fish are there

  647. the fisherman

  648. is there.

  649. Look even at

  650. the charcoal

  651. fire.

  652. Do you see it

  653. there in

  654. verse 8?

  655. Not to put

  656. too much emphasis

  657. on this

  658. but there's only

  659. two places

  660. in the whole book

  661. of John

  662. where a charcoal

  663. fire like this

  664. is mentioned.

  665. And interestingly

  666. enough the previous

  667. time all the

  668. characters are the same.

  669. The last time

  670. in John 18

  671. Peter sat

  672. before a fire

  673. early in the morning

  674. it was in the

  675. courthouse

  676. of the courtyard

  677. of the high priest

  678. and he was asked

  679. a question

  680. you are one

  681. of his disciples

  682. are you not?

  683. In fact

  684. the gospel of John

  685. recounts that this

  686. question or a variant

  687. of it was asked

  688. to Peter three times

  689. all of them

  690. by the same

  691. fireside

  692. and three times

  693. Peter emphatically

  694. answers no

  695. I did not know

  696. the man

  697. I have no

  698. association

  699. with him.

  700. Three questions

  701. three denials

  702. and here he is

  703. again

  704. by a sunrise

  705. fire set

  706. being asked

  707. if he would

  708. associate himself

  709. with Jesus

  710. but this time

  711. it's the crucified

  712. one himself

  713. who is asking

  714. the question

  715. what can be

  716. made of this?

  717. I suspect

  718. that this is

  719. Jesus

  720. reminding Peter

  721. in word

  722. and in deed

  723. about his

  724. betrayal

  725. and proceeding

  726. to negate

  727. to erase

  728. the denials

  729. one by one.

  730. You are also

  731. one of this

  732. man's disciples

  733. aren't you?

  734. I am not.

  735. Simon son

  736. of Jonah

  737. do you love

  738. me more

  739. than these?

  740. Yes Lord

  741. you know

  742. that I love

  743. you.

  744. You also

  745. are not

  746. one of his

  747. disciples

  748. are you?

  749. I am not.

  750. Simon son

  751. of Jonah

  752. do you love

  753. me?

  754. Yes Lord

  755. you know

  756. that I love

  757. you.

  758. Did I not

  759. see you

  760. in the garden

  761. with him?

  762. I tell

  763. you I

  764. do not

  765. know

  766. the man.

  767. Simon

  768. son of

  769. Jonah

  770. do you

  771. love me?

  772. Lord

  773. you know

  774. everything

  775. you know

  776. that I

  777. love you.

  778. Jesus

  779. recounting

  780. Peter's

  781. denials

  782. one by

  783. one

  784. and negating

  785. each of

  786. them

  787. shows

  788. both to

  789. Peter

  790. and to

  791. those

  792. around

  793. him

  794. that his

  795. sins

  796. are forgiven

  797. and his

  798. position

  799. is restored.

  800. And note

  801. that this

  802. happens at

  803. breakfast

  804. with the

  805. other

  806. disciples

  807. around

  808. after

  809. Peter's

  810. boast

  811. made

  812. in front

  813. of all

  814. of them

  815. they would

  816. all know

  817. he had

  818. failed

  819. to maintain

  820. his

  821. faithfulness

  822. to the

  823. Lord

  824. and if

  825. he was

  826. called

  827. to

  828. strengthen

  829. and

  830. encourage

  831. the

  832. apostles

  833. how was

  834. he to

  835. do

  836. that

  837. with

  838. such a

  839. blot

  840. on his

  841. record?

  842. So

  843. Jesus

  844. walks

  845. him

  846. through

  847. the

  848. painful

  849. recounting

  850. of his

  851. failures

  852. in

  853. public

  854. in

  855. order

  856. to

  857. deal

  858. with

  859. them

  860. and

  861. finally

  862. to

  863. erase

  864. them.

  865. He

  866. won't

  867. let

  868. Peter

  869. hide.

  870. He

  871. goes

  872. right

  873. to

  874. the

  875. source

  876. of

  877. betrayal.

  878. Consider

  879. an

  880. example.

  881. If

  882. you've

  883. ever

  884. had

  885. a

  886. sports

  887. injury

  888. you've

  889. likely

  890. had

  891. to

  892. go

  893. to

  894. a

  895. physical

  896. therapist

  897. during

  898. the

  899. process

  900. of

  901. your

  902. recovery

  903. and

  904. when

  905. you

  906. have

  907. an

  908. injury

  909. it's

  910. your

  911. body's

  912. natural

  913. reaction

  914. to

  915. attempt

  916. to

  917. shield

  918. that

  919. muscle

  920. from

  921. further

  922. injury

  923. by

  924. using

  925. other

  926. muscles

  927. to

  928. compensate

  929. for the

  930. work

  931. that

  932. muscle

  933. ought

  934. to

  935. do.

  936. Your

  937. body

  938. hides

  939. the

  940. injured

  941. muscle.

  942. But

  943. that's

  944. not how

  945. the

  946. muscle

  947. gets

  948. healed

  949. and

  950. so

  951. it's

  952. the job

  953. of the

  954. physical

  955. therapist

  956. to put

  957. your

  958. body

  959. through

  960. exercises

  961. and

  962. stretches

  963. that

  964. isolate

  965. exactly

  966. that

  967. muscle

  968. and

  969. exercise

  970. it

  971. directly

  972. often

  973. with

  974. great

  975. pain

  976. in order

  977. finally

  978. to restore

  979. the health

  980. of that

  981. very

  982. muscle

  983. that has

  984. been

  985. injured.

  986. I think

  987. this is what

  988. Jesus is

  989. doing with

  990. Peter

  991. here.

  992. Or

  993. another

  994. example

  995. perhaps

  996. more

  997. intimate

  998. and

  999. maybe

  1000. even

  1001. childish

  1002. but

  1003. I

  1004. think

  1005. God

  1006. sometimes

  1007. buries

  1008. his

  1009. greatest

  1010. truths

  1011. in

  1012. shallow

  1013. sand.

  1014. When I

  1015. was a

  1016. little

  1017. boy

  1018. and

  1019. would

  1020. be

  1021. playing

  1022. outside

  1023. I

  1024. would

  1025. sometimes

  1026. get a

  1027. scratch

  1028. or two

  1029. go cry

  1030. to my

  1031. mother

  1032. and she

  1033. would pick

  1034. me up

  1035. sit me

  1036. down

  1037. in the

  1038. kitchen

  1039. top

  1040. counter

  1041. and ask

  1042. me

  1043. where's

  1044. the

  1045. boo-boo

  1046. and I

  1047. would

  1048. of course

  1049. point to

  1050. the

  1051. scratch

  1052. on my

  1053. elbow

  1054. or my

  1055. knee

  1056. and my

  1057. mother

  1058. would

  1059. lean

  1060. over

  1061. and kiss

  1062. it

  1063. and she

  1064. said

  1065. there

  1066. now it's

  1067. all better

  1068. she would

  1069. identify the

  1070. direct source

  1071. of the pain

  1072. and she

  1073. would give

  1074. me the

  1075. loving care

  1076. that I

  1077. need

  1078. right there

  1079. you know

  1080. she even

  1081. did this

  1082. for the

  1083. injuries

  1084. that I

  1085. incurred

  1086. because I

  1087. had

  1088. disobeyed

  1089. her

  1090. I think

  1091. that's

  1092. something

  1093. like what

  1094. Jesus

  1095. is doing

  1096. for Peter

  1097. here

  1098. and this

  1099. is why

  1100. confession

  1101. of sin

  1102. is also

  1103. so important

  1104. for the

  1105. health

  1106. of the

  1107. Christian

  1108. soul

  1109. confession

  1110. requires us

  1111. to look

  1112. our sin

  1113. directly

  1114. in the

  1115. eye

  1116. and renounce

  1117. them

  1118. to expose

  1119. our injury

  1120. in order

  1121. to treat

  1122. it

  1123. we admit

  1124. to a

  1125. fellow

  1126. believer

  1127. or to

  1128. God

  1129. himself

  1130. that we

  1131. have not

  1132. kept

  1133. our

  1134. vows

  1135. to the

  1136. Lord

  1137. we hear

  1138. the

  1139. condemnation

  1140. of that

  1141. sin

  1142. and the

  1143. good

  1144. news

  1145. that

  1146. Christ

  1147. has

  1148. taken

  1149. away

  1150. our

  1151. condemnation

  1152. this

  1153. is the

  1154. true meaning

  1155. of Martin

  1156. Luther's

  1157. doctrine

  1158. of the

  1159. priesthood

  1160. of all

  1161. believers

  1162. not that

  1163. each

  1164. individual

  1165. is his

  1166. own

  1167. church

  1168. and doesn't

  1169. need

  1170. others

  1171. no

  1172. but on

  1173. the

  1174. contrary

  1175. that each

  1176. individual

  1177. believer

  1178. can intercede

  1179. for the

  1180. rest

  1181. can beg

  1182. that God's

  1183. grace be

  1184. given to

  1185. his fellow

  1186. church

  1187. member

  1188. and that

  1189. he might

  1190. be kept

  1191. from stumbling

  1192. once again

  1193. here

  1194. here at

  1195. Trinity

  1196. we often

  1197. do this

  1198. in a

  1199. morning

  1200. service

  1201. during

  1202. some

  1203. prayer

  1204. time

  1205. where we

  1206. confess

  1207. our

  1208. sins

  1209. to

  1210. God

  1211. and we

  1212. hear

  1213. the

  1214. forgiveness

  1215. of them

  1216. or we

  1217. do so

  1218. in the

  1219. quiet

  1220. time

  1221. before we

  1222. receive

  1223. the

  1224. Lord's

  1225. supper

  1226. we

  1227. take

  1228. time

  1229. to

  1230. examine

  1231. our

  1232. consciences

  1233. confess

  1234. our

  1235. sins

  1236. and make

  1237. sure

  1238. we are

  1239. in

  1240. right

  1241. standing

  1242. before

  1243. we

  1244. receive

  1245. the

  1246. bread

  1247. and

  1248. the

  1249. wine

  1250. don't

  1251. think

  1252. lightly

  1253. of these

  1254. times

  1255. of

  1256. confession

  1257. they're

  1258. not a

  1259. formality

  1260. they're

  1261. abalmed

  1262. the

  1263. soul

  1264. redemption

  1265. of our

  1266. failures

  1267. you see

  1268. always

  1269. comes

  1270. by walking

  1271. through

  1272. those

  1273. failures

  1274. the

  1275. first

  1276. time

  1277. when we

  1278. sin

  1279. we walk

  1280. through

  1281. our

  1282. failures

  1283. away

  1284. from

  1285. Christ

  1286. but

  1287. in

  1288. repentance

  1289. we walk

  1290. through

  1291. our

  1292. failures

  1293. again

  1294. this

  1295. time

  1296. with

  1297. Jesus

  1298. at

  1299. our

  1300. side

  1301. the

  1302. first

  1303. time

  1304. in

  1305. this

  1306. story

  1307. it

  1308. is

  1309. Peter

  1310. siding

  1311. with

  1312. his

  1313. sin

  1314. against

  1315. Jesus

  1316. here

  1317. Peter

  1318. takes

  1319. the

  1320. side

  1321. of

  1322. Jesus

  1323. against

  1324. his

  1325. sin

  1326. this

  1327. is

  1328. what

  1329. makes

  1330. his

  1331. restoration

  1332. possible

  1333. so

  1334. Jesus

  1335. faithfulness

  1336. restores

  1337. the

  1338. disciples

  1339. history

  1340. third

  1341. Jesus

  1342. faithfulness

  1343. restores

  1344. the

  1345. disciples

  1346. calling

  1347. the

  1348. result

  1349. of

  1350. this

  1351. process

  1352. of

  1353. restoration

  1354. through

  1355. which

  1356. Jesus

  1357. takes

  1358. Peter

  1359. is

  1360. a

  1361. strange

  1362. one

  1363. he

  1364. is

  1365. commissioned

  1366. three

  1367. times

  1368. feed

  1369. my

  1370. sheep

  1371. feed

  1372. my

  1373. sheep

  1374. feed

  1375. my

  1376. sheep

  1377. but

  1378. then

  1379. Jesus

  1380. predicts

  1381. Peter's

  1382. end

  1383. verse

  1384. 18

  1385. and

  1386. 19

  1387. there

  1388. when

  1389. you

  1390. were

  1391. young

  1392. you

  1393. used

  1394. to

  1395. dress

  1396. yourself

  1397. and

  1398. walk

  1399. wherever

  1400. you

  1401. wanted

  1402. but

  1403. when

  1404. you

  1405. are

  1406. old

  1407. you

  1408. will

  1409. stretch

  1410. out

  1411. your

  1412. hands

  1413. and

  1414. another

  1415. will

  1416. dress

  1417. you

  1418. and

  1419. carry

  1420. you

  1421. where

  1422. you

  1423. do

  1424. not

  1425. want

  1426. to

  1427. go

  1428. this

  1429. is a

  1430. strange

  1431. consolation

  1432. this

  1433. is a

  1434. strange

  1435. encouragement

  1436. and

  1437. Peter

  1438. ministers

  1439. with

  1440. this

  1441. prophecy

  1442. hanging

  1443. above

  1444. his

  1445. head

  1446. for

  1447. three

  1448. decades

  1449. before

  1450. his

  1451. martyrdom

  1452. comes

  1453. to

  1454. pass

  1455. but

  1456. do

  1457. you

  1458. note

  1459. that

  1460. there's

  1461. also

  1462. a

  1463. hope

  1464. that's

  1465. hidden

  1466. in

  1467. this

  1468. prophecy

  1469. the

  1470. gospel

  1471. writer

  1472. John

  1473. in

  1474. verse

  1475. 19

  1476. says

  1477. this

  1478. is

  1479. the

  1480. death

  1481. by

  1482. which

  1483. he

  1484. would

  1485. glorify

  1486. God

  1487. you

  1488. you

  1489. see

  1490. Peter

  1491. will

  1492. be

  1493. killed

  1494. at

  1495. the

  1496. end

  1497. but

  1498. his

  1499. death

  1500. will

  1501. bring

  1502. glory

  1503. to

  1504. God

  1505. and

  1506. why

  1507. because

  1508. the

  1509. next

  1510. time

  1511. he's

  1512. challenged

  1513. concerning

  1514. whether

  1515. he

  1516. belongs

  1517. to

  1518. Christ

  1519. he

  1520. will

  1521. not

  1522. fail

  1523. the

  1524. test

  1525. where

  1526. once

  1527. Peter

  1528. shrunk

  1529. back

  1530. in

  1531. fear

  1532. at

  1533. the

  1534. interrogation

  1535. of

  1536. a

  1537. mere

  1538. slave

  1539. girl

  1540. now

  1541. Peter

  1542. will

  1543. stand

  1544. firm

  1545. even

  1546. in

  1547. the

  1548. face

  1549. of

  1550. torturers

  1551. and

  1552. assassins

  1553. Peter

  1554. has

  1555. failed

  1556. once

  1557. but

  1558. Jesus

  1559. promises

  1560. here

  1561. that

  1562. he

  1563. will

  1564. not

  1565. need

  1566. to

  1567. be

  1568. restored

  1569. again

  1570. and

  1571. in

  1572. the

  1573. book

  1574. of

  1575. Acts

  1576. we

  1577. read

  1578. stories

  1579. of

  1580. a

  1581. very

  1582. different

  1583. Peter

  1584. in

  1585. Acts

  1586. Peter

  1587. is

  1588. preaching

  1589. to

  1590. thousands

  1591. of

  1592. people

  1593. instead

  1594. of

  1595. cowering

  1596. before

  1597. just

  1598. a

  1599. few

  1600. he's

  1601. going

  1602. to

  1603. jail

  1604. being

  1605. flogged

  1606. and

  1607. beaten

  1608. and

  1609. praising

  1610. the

  1611. Lord

  1612. for

  1613. all

  1614. of

  1615. it

  1616. this

  1617. is

  1618. a

  1619. changed

  1620. Peter

  1621. what

  1622. accounts

  1623. for

  1624. this

  1625. change

  1626. Jesus

  1627. has

  1628. sent

  1629. his

  1630. Holy

  1631. Spirit

  1632. to

  1633. dwell

  1634. in

  1635. Peter

  1636. and

  1637. as

  1638. Pastor

  1639. Nick

  1640. said

  1641. this

  1642. morning

  1643. those

  1644. who

  1645. have

  1646. the

  1647. Holy

  1648. Spirit

  1649. never

  1650. fall

  1651. finally

  1652. away

  1653. but

  1654. in

  1655. this

  1656. story

  1657. Peter

  1658. does

  1659. not

  1660. yet

  1661. see

  1662. this

  1663. prophecy

  1664. as

  1665. having

  1666. even

  1667. a

  1668. hint

  1669. of

  1670. good

  1671. news

  1672. in

  1673. it

  1674. he

  1675. attempts

  1676. to

  1677. evade

  1678. what

  1679. about

  1680. this

  1681. one

  1682. he

  1683. says

  1684. but

  1685. Jesus

  1686. will

  1687. have

  1688. none

  1689. of

  1690. it

  1691. what

  1692. does

  1693. it

  1694. matter

  1695. to

  1696. you

  1697. he

  1698. says

  1699. you

  1700. follow

  1701. me

  1702. you

  1703. see

  1704. there is

  1705. a

  1706. certain

  1707. simplicity

  1708. about

  1709. the

  1710. Christian

  1711. life

  1712. we

  1713. simply

  1714. do

  1715. what

  1716. God

  1717. commands

  1718. us

  1719. to

  1720. do

  1721. we

  1722. don't

  1723. take a

  1724. poll

  1725. to

  1726. determine

  1727. the

  1728. popularity

  1729. of

  1730. our

  1731. actions

  1732. we

  1733. just

  1734. do

  1735. what

  1736. we're

  1737. called

  1738. to

  1739. do

  1740. so

  1741. we

  1742. ought

  1743. to

  1744. encourage

  1745. Christian

  1746. teenagers

  1747. and

  1748. young

  1749. people

  1750. that

  1751. while

  1752. this

  1753. is

  1754. difficult

  1755. and

  1756. sounds

  1757. rough

  1758. there

  1759. are

  1760. many

  1761. voices

  1762. in

  1763. the

  1764. lives

  1765. of

  1766. our

  1767. young

  1768. people

  1769. in

  1770. our

  1771. church

  1772. that

  1773. cloud

  1774. their

  1775. path

  1776. and

  1777. tell

  1778. them

  1779. to

  1780. do

  1781. things

  1782. that

  1783. the

  1784. Lord

  1785. doesn't

  1786. tell

  1787. them

  1788. to

  1789. do

  1790. we

  1791. ought

  1792. to

  1793. tell

  1794. them

  1795. that

  1796. while

  1797. they

  1798. may

  1799. feel

  1800. alone

  1801. and

  1802. isolated

  1803. they

  1804. have

  1805. a

  1806. higher

  1807. calling

  1808. God

  1809. has

  1810. called

  1811. them

  1812. to

  1813. greatness

  1814. and

  1815. they

  1816. are

  1817. to

  1818. do

  1819. what

  1820. God

  1821. commands

  1822. knowing

  1823. that

  1824. therein

  1825. lies

  1826. the

  1827. way

  1828. of

  1829. truth

  1830. and

  1831. happiness

  1832. in

  1833. my

  1834. years

  1835. I

  1836. have

  1837. found

  1838. this

  1839. to

  1840. be

  1841. true

  1842. that

  1843. God

  1844. is

  1845. a

  1846. faithful

  1847. father

  1848. who

  1849. desires

  1850. our

  1851. happiness

  1852. and

  1853. he

  1854. will

  1855. not

  1856. let

  1857. us

  1858. down

  1859. we

  1860. have

  1861. a

  1862. high

  1863. and

  1864. noble

  1865. call

  1866. to

  1867. God

  1868. be

  1869. faithful

  1870. you

  1871. see

  1872. that

  1873. this

  1874. calling

  1875. and

  1876. Jesus

  1877. rejection

  1878. of

  1879. Peter's

  1880. comparison

  1881. to

  1882. John

  1883. also

  1884. destroys

  1885. competitiveness

  1886. competitiveness

  1887. characterizes

  1888. many

  1889. perhaps

  1890. all

  1891. other

  1892. aspects

  1893. of

  1894. our

  1895. lives

  1896. it's

  1897. a

  1898. competitiveness

  1899. that

  1900. ought

  1901. not

  1902. exist

  1903. at

  1904. all

  1905. in

  1906. the

  1907. Christian

  1908. life

  1909. we

  1910. cannot

  1911. compare

  1912. the

  1913. work

  1914. that

  1915. God

  1916. has

  1917. called

  1918. us

  1919. to

  1920. do

  1921. with

  1922. the

  1923. work

  1924. that

  1925. he

  1926. has

  1927. called

  1928. another

  1929. to

  1930. do

  1931. the

  1932. work

  1933. that

  1934. God

  1935. has

  1936. called

  1937. each

  1938. of

  1939. us

  1940. to

  1941. do

  1942. is

  1943. not

  1944. identical

  1945. faithfulness

  1946. for

  1947. you

  1948. may

  1949. look

  1950. like a

  1951. life

  1952. of

  1953. pain

  1954. and a

  1955. martyr's

  1956. death

  1957. for

  1958. the

  1959. one

  1960. in

  1961. the

  1962. pew

  1963. in

  1964. front

  1965. of

  1966. you

  1967. it

  1968. may

  1969. mean

  1970. bearing

  1971. under

  1972. the

  1973. weight

  1974. of

  1975. a

  1976. disease

  1977. year

  1978. after

  1979. year

  1980. and

  1981. tenaciously

  1982. clinging

  1983. to the

  1984. words

  1985. of

  1986. Job

  1987. though

  1988. he

  1989. slay

  1990. me

  1991. yet

  1992. will

  1993. I

  1994. praise

  1995. him

  1996. for

  1997. still

  1998. another

  1999. God's

  2000. call

  2001. to

  2002. you

  2003. may

  2004. be

  2005. to

  2006. spend

  2007. the

  2008. prime

  2009. of

  2010. your

  2011. life

  2012. raising

  2013. a

  2014. goodly

  2015. heritage

  2016. of

  2017. children

  2018. or

  2019. working

  2020. in a

  2021. nine

  2022. to

  2023. five

  2024. job

  2025. at

  2026. the

  2027. office

  2028. where

  2029. you

  2030. steadily

  2031. lay

  2032. down

  2033. your

  2034. life

  2035. to

  2036. provide

  2037. for

  2038. your

  2039. family

  2040. and

  2041. be

  2042. faithful

  2043. to

  2044. your

  2045. church

  2046. and

  2047. God

  2048. is

  2049. glorified

  2050. in

  2051. all

  2052. of

  2053. these

  2054. things

  2055. yes

  2056. we

  2057. can

  2058. and

  2059. we

  2060. ought

  2061. to

  2062. strategize

  2063. about

  2064. how

  2065. we

  2066. can

  2067. bring

  2068. most

  2069. glory

  2070. to

  2071. God

  2072. but

  2073. once

  2074. we've

  2075. received

  2076. a

  2077. calling

  2078. from

  2079. God

  2080. we

  2081. ought

  2082. to

  2083. fight

  2084. the

  2085. temptation

  2086. to

  2087. compare

  2088. ourselves

  2089. to

  2090. our

  2091. brothers

  2092. and to

  2093. lament

  2094. that we

  2095. have

  2096. a

  2097. less

  2098. noble

  2099. calling

  2100. than

  2101. they

  2102. you

  2103. will

  2104. not

  2105. bring

  2106. a

  2107. copy

  2108. of

  2109. your

  2110. resume

  2111. to

  2112. the

  2113. final

  2114. judgment

  2115. so

  2116. we

  2117. have

  2118. many

  2119. missionary

  2120. biographies

  2121. that

  2122. recount

  2123. the

  2124. mighty

  2125. works

  2126. that

  2127. God

  2128. did

  2129. through

  2130. a

  2131. certain

  2132. preacher

  2133. or

  2134. teacher

  2135. and

  2136. I

  2137. think

  2138. these

  2139. books

  2140. are

  2141. great

  2142. and

  2143. they

  2144. encourage

  2145. us

  2146. to

  2147. consecrate

  2148. our

  2149. lives

  2150. to

  2151. God

  2152. but

  2153. let

  2154. me

  2155. tell

  2156. you

  2157. about

  2158. a

  2159. story

  2160. about

  2161. a

  2162. friend

  2163. of

  2164. mine

  2165. about

  2166. whom

  2167. you'll

  2168. never

  2169. read

  2170. a

  2171. book

  2172. his

  2173. name

  2174. is

  2175. Tim

  2176. and

  2177. I

  2178. had

  2179. the

  2180. honor

  2181. of

  2182. working

  2183. with

  2184. him

  2185. in

  2186. northern

  2187. Iraq

  2188. two

  2189. years

  2190. ago

  2191. where

  2192. he

  2193. was

  2194. a

  2195. missionary

  2196. the

  2197. work

  2198. is

  2199. hard

  2200. and

  2201. the

  2202. converts

  2203. are

  2204. few

  2205. one

  2206. day

  2207. I

  2208. asked

  2209. him

  2210. Tim

  2211. are

  2212. you

  2213. ever

  2214. discouraged

  2215. and

  2216. tempted

  2217. to

  2218. believe

  2219. you

  2220. misread

  2221. the

  2222. hand

  2223. of

  2224. God

  2225. he

  2226. replied

  2227. to

  2228. me

  2229. sometimes

  2230. but

  2231. you

  2232. know

  2233. I

  2234. made

  2235. my

  2236. peace

  2237. a long

  2238. time

  2239. ago

  2240. with

  2241. the

  2242. 30

  2243. the

  2244. 50

  2245. and

  2246. the

  2247. 100

  2248. do

  2249. you

  2250. get

  2251. what

  2252. he

  2253. means

  2254. by

  2255. this

  2256. do

  2257. you

  2258. remember

  2259. in the

  2260. parable

  2261. of the

  2262. four

  2263. soils

  2264. the

  2265. good

  2266. soil

  2267. receives

  2268. the

  2269. word

  2270. of

  2271. God

  2272. and

  2273. what

  2274. does

  2275. Jesus

  2276. say

  2277. it

  2278. does

  2279. it

  2280. bears

  2281. fruit

  2282. some

  2283. of it

  2284. bears

  2285. 30 fold

  2286. some

  2287. 50 fold

  2288. some

  2289. 100 fold

  2290. see

  2291. even

  2292. there

  2293. in the

  2294. parable

  2295. is

  2296. embedded

  2297. the

  2298. recognition

  2299. that

  2300. in terms

  2301. of sheer

  2302. numbers

  2303. we won't

  2304. all

  2305. have

  2306. the

  2307. same

  2308. amount

  2309. of

  2310. success

  2311. and

  2312. just

  2313. a

  2314. year

  2315. ago

  2316. Tim

  2317. and

  2318. his

  2319. wife

  2320. had

  2321. to

  2322. leave

  2323. Iraq

  2324. because

  2325. she

  2326. was

  2327. diagnosed

  2328. with

  2329. Lou Gehrig's

  2330. disease

  2331. and she

  2332. died

  2333. in

  2334. January

  2335. seeing

  2336. only

  2337. a few

  2338. converts

  2339. from

  2340. nine

  2341. hard

  2342. years

  2343. of

  2344. labor

  2345. in

  2346. northern

  2347. Iraq

  2348. but I

  2349. ask you

  2350. this

  2351. is

  2352. God

  2353. not

  2354. glorified

  2355. in

  2356. that

  2357. so

  2358. keep

  2359. on

  2360. my

  2361. friend

  2362. keep

  2363. on

  2364. do

  2365. not

  2366. put

  2367. your

  2368. hand

  2369. to

  2370. the

  2371. plow

  2372. and

  2373. turn

  2374. back

  2375. be

  2376. faithful

  2377. in

  2378. the

  2379. furrow

  2380. of

  2381. God's

  2382. field

  2383. in

  2384. which

  2385. he

  2386. has

  2387. placed

  2388. you

  2389. knowing

  2390. that

  2391. a

  2392. harvest

  2393. of

  2394. righteousness

  2395. awaits

  2396. all

  2397. those

  2398. who

  2399. are

  2400. faithful

  2401. to

  2402. do

  2403. the

  2404. work

  2405. that

  2406. God

  2407. has

  2408. called

  2409. them

  2410. to

  2411. do

  2412. not

  2413. be

  2414. weary

  2415. in

  2416. well

  2417. doing

  2418. for

  2419. in

  2420. due

  2421. season

  2422. we

  2423. shall

  2424. reap

  2425. if

  2426. we

  2427. do

  2428. not

  2429. lose

  2430. heart

  2431. and

  2432. what

  2433. is

  2434. the

  2435. motivation

  2436. for

  2437. this

  2438. well

  2439. doing

  2440. and

  2441. the

  2442. assurance

  2443. of

  2444. this

  2445. harvest

  2446. this

  2447. is

  2448. my

  2449. fourth

  2450. and

  2451. final

  2452. port

  2453. tonight

  2454. finally

  2455. fourth

  2456. Jesus

  2457. restores

  2458. the

  2459. earth

  2460. Jesus

  2461. restores

  2462. the

  2463. earth

  2464. he

  2465. restores

  2466. history

  2467. he

  2468. restores

  2469. vision

  2470. he

  2471. restores

  2472. calling

  2473. and he

  2474. restores

  2475. the

  2476. earth

  2477. look at

  2478. the

  2479. last

  2480. verse

  2481. of

  2482. the

  2483. chapter

  2484. it

  2485. says

  2486. now

  2487. there

  2488. are

  2489. many

  2490. also

  2491. many

  2492. other

  2493. things

  2494. that

  2495. Jesus

  2496. did

  2497. and

  2498. were

  2499. every

  2500. one

  2501. of

  2502. them

  2503. to be

  2504. written

  2505. I

  2506. suppose

  2507. that

  2508. the

  2509. world

  2510. itself

  2511. could

  2512. not

  2513. contain

  2514. the

  2515. books

  2516. that

  2517. would

  2518. be

  2519. written

  2520. some

  2521. people

  2522. tend

  2523. to think

  2524. this

  2525. is an

  2526. exaggeration

  2527. I

  2528. don't

  2529. you

  2530. see

  2531. Jesus

  2532. John

  2533. ends

  2534. this

  2535. book

  2536. by

  2537. reminding

  2538. us

  2539. there

  2540. are

  2541. many

  2542. things

  2543. that

  2544. Jesus

  2545. did

  2546. he

  2547. began

  2548. the

  2549. book

  2550. by

  2551. telling

  2552. us

  2553. that

  2554. the

  2555. divine

  2556. word

  2557. of

  2558. God

  2559. the

  2560. second

  2561. person

  2562. of

  2563. the

  2564. trinity

  2565. is

  2566. the

  2567. blueprint

  2568. for

  2569. all

  2570. creation

  2571. he

  2572. says

  2573. all

  2574. things

  2575. were

  2576. made

  2577. through

  2578. him

  2579. and

  2580. without

  2581. him

  2582. was

  2583. not

  2584. anything

  2585. made

  2586. that

  2587. was

  2588. made

  2589. you

  2590. see

  2591. it

  2592. is

  2593. Jesus

  2594. who

  2595. is

  2596. the

  2597. blueprint

  2598. for

  2599. all

  2600. of

  2601. creation

  2602. consider

  2603. this

  2604. therefore

  2605. if

  2606. Christ

  2607. created

  2608. the

  2609. whole

  2610. world

  2611. and

  2612. he

  2613. was

  2614. also

  2615. active

  2616. in

  2617. loving

  2618. the

  2619. father

  2620. and

  2621. the

  2622. holy

  2623. spirit

  2624. before

  2625. the

  2626. foundation

  2627. of

  2628. the

  2629. world

  2630. and

  2631. if

  2632. Christ

  2633. in

  2634. his

  2635. flesh

  2636. taught

  2637. and

  2638. healed

  2639. and

  2640. prayed

  2641. far

  2642. more

  2643. often

  2644. than

  2645. is

  2646. recounted

  2647. in

  2648. this

  2649. book

  2650. and

  2651. if

  2652. through

  2653. his

  2654. resurrection

  2655. he

  2656. began

  2657. the

  2658. process

  2659. of

  2660. rolling

  2661. back

  2662. the

  2663. curse

  2664. then

  2665. of course

  2666. the world

  2667. itself

  2668. cannot

  2669. contain

  2670. the books

  2671. that

  2672. would

  2673. be

  2674. written

  2675. the

  2676. world

  2677. itself

  2678. is

  2679. just

  2680. one

  2681. of

  2682. the

  2683. books

  2684. that

  2685. would

  2686. be

  2687. written

  2688. and

  2689. do

  2690. you

  2691. know

  2692. that

  2693. Jesus

  2694. is

  2695. active

  2696. still

  2697. do

  2698. you

  2699. know

  2700. that

  2701. he

  2702. intercedes

  2703. for

  2704. you

  2705. this

  2706. is

  2707. the

  2708. power

  2709. of the

  2710. man

  2711. who

  2712. ate

  2713. fish

  2714. with

  2715. his

  2716. friends

  2717. on

  2718. the

  2719. beach

  2720. in

  2721. Galilee

  2722. and

  2723. this

  2724. is

  2725. the

  2726. power

  2727. that

  2728. stands

  2729. behind

  2730. and

  2731. assures

  2732. each

  2733. of

  2734. us

  2735. of

  2736. every

  2737. one

  2738. of

  2739. his

  2740. promises

  2741. promises

  2742. to

  2743. restore

  2744. meaning

  2745. promises

  2746. to

  2747. restore

  2748. history

  2749. promises

  2750. to

  2751. restore

  2752. our

  2753. calling

  2754. promises

  2755. to

  2756. restore

  2757. our

  2758. world

  2759. this

  2760. is

  2761. our

  2762. God

  2763. let us

  2764. go forth

  2765. this

  2766. week

  2767. and

  2768. praise

  2769. him

  2770. in

  2771. word

  2772. in

  2773. song

  2774. and

  2775. in

  2776. deed

  2777. let's

  2778. pray

  2779. Lord I

  2780. thank you

  2781. for your

  2782. resurrection

  2783. I thank

  2784. you that

  2785. death

  2786. by death

  2787. has been

  2788. defeated

  2789. and that

  2790. you are

  2791. in the

  2792. process

  2793. of a

  2794. great

  2795. restoration

  2796. of this

  2797. world

  2798. I pray

  2799. that we

  2800. would have

  2801. eyes

  2802. to see

  2803. this

  2804. restoration

  2805. going on

  2806. around

  2807. us

  2808. and we

  2809. would have

  2810. zeal to

  2811. be

  2812. participants

  2813. in this

  2814. restoration

  2815. we pray

  2816. that you

  2817. would do

  2818. this work

  2819. quickly

  2820. we pray

  2821. that you

  2822. would give

  2823. us

  2824. faith

  2825. we pray

  2826. these things

  2827. in the name

  2828. of your son

  2829. amen

  2830. so there's

  2831. anything

  2832. unclear about

  2833. the sermon

  2834. or you'd like

  2835. to hear more

  2836. about

  2837. or anything

  2838. in general

  2839. fire away

  2840. we have

  2841. not that

  2842. long so

  2843. try to keep

  2844. the questions

  2845. short and I'll

  2846. keep the answers

  2847. short as well

  2848. yes sir

  2849. short answer

  2850. no

  2851. long answer

  2852. if you

  2853. if you want

  2854. to have

  2855. some fun

  2856. tonight

  2857. go home

  2858. and look up

  2859. various historical

  2860. interpretations

  2861. of the

  2862. 153 fish

  2863. because there

  2864. are lots

  2865. of them

  2866. and I think

  2867. all of them

  2868. are nonsense

  2869. but they're

  2870. all a lot

  2871. of fun

  2872. if you do

  2873. really weird

  2874. multiplication

  2875. triangles

  2876. and stuff

  2877. it ends up

  2878. sort of

  2879. Illuminati-esque

  2880. probably the

  2881. reason is

  2882. these guys

  2883. are like

  2884. oh my goodness

  2885. there's a lot

  2886. of fish

  2887. I wonder

  2888. how many

  2889. of them

  2890. are

  2891. I don't

  2892. know

  2893. Peter

  2894. let's

  2895. count

  2896. them

  2897. and they

  2898. ended up

  2899. with

  2900. 103

  2901. yeah

  2902. yeah

  2903. yeah

  2904. yeah

  2905. yeah

  2906. yeah

  2907. yeah

  2908. yeah

  2909. yeah

  2910. good question

  2911. so

  2912. a similar

  2913. question

  2914. on this

  2915. text

  2916. is

  2917. this

  2918. play

  2919. between

  2920. these

  2921. two

  2922. verbs

  2923. do you

  2924. love

  2925. me

  2926. and it's

  2927. a phileo

  2928. and agape

  2929. so basically

  2930. in Greek

  2931. it's two

  2932. different

  2933. verbs

  2934. what you'll

  2935. notice

  2936. throughout

  2937. John

  2938. frequently

  2939. is he likes

  2940. to make

  2941. these subtle

  2942. changes

  2943. in his

  2944. words

  2945. so I

  2946. actually

  2947. don't think

  2948. there's any

  2949. real difference

  2950. between Jesus'

  2951. three answers

  2952. or the three

  2953. questions

  2954. if you notice

  2955. the questions

  2956. are also

  2957. different

  2958. slightly

  2959. different

  2960. but then

  2961. it says

  2962. here

  2963. in

  2964. verse

  2965. 17

  2966. Peter

  2967. was grieved

  2968. because he

  2969. said to him

  2970. the third

  2971. time

  2972. do you

  2973. love

  2974. me

  2975. so it

  2976. seems

  2977. like

  2978. it seems

  2979. like

  2980. Peter

  2981. is receiving

  2982. this as

  2983. the same

  2984. question

  2985. three times

  2986. so

  2987. the variations

  2988. I don't

  2989. think

  2990. there's

  2991. much

  2992. there

  2993. the significance

  2994. of the

  2995. feed my

  2996. sheep

  2997. though

  2998. I think

  2999. it's calling

  3000. Peter back

  3001. to what he

  3002. was going

  3003. to do

  3004. originally

  3005. what Jesus

  3006. had told

  3007. him to do

  3008. I find it

  3009. fascinating

  3010. before the

  3011. crucifixion

  3012. Jesus has

  3013. the whole

  3014. disciples there

  3015. and he says

  3016. Simon

  3017. the devil

  3018. has asked

  3019. for

  3020. and then in

  3021. Greek

  3022. it's

  3023. y'all

  3024. has asked

  3025. for y'all

  3026. that he might

  3027. sift you

  3028. like wheat

  3029. but I

  3030. prayed

  3031. for you

  3032. singular

  3033. that your

  3034. faith

  3035. would not

  3036. fail

  3037. and when

  3038. you

  3039. were

  3040. restored

  3041. go

  3042. encourage

  3043. the

  3044. brothers

  3045. so it

  3046. seems

  3047. like

  3048. Peter

  3049. has

  3050. some

  3051. sort

  3052. of

  3053. responsibility

  3054. here

  3055. to

  3056. have

  3057. a

  3058. pastoral

  3059. role

  3060. toward

  3061. the rest

  3062. of

  3063. the

  3064. apostles

  3065. and you

  3066. see

  3067. he

  3068. continues

  3069. to do

  3070. that

  3071. in

  3072. the

  3073. book

  3074. of

  3075. Acts

  3076. in

  3077. the

  3078. Jerusalem

  3079. church

  3080. there

  3081. yes

  3082. Patrick

  3083. yeah

  3084. that's a

  3085. great

  3086. question

  3087. I have

  3088. found

  3089. I asked

  3090. my mother

  3091. this question

  3092. I was having

  3093. some sort

  3094. of like

  3095. dark night

  3096. of the soul

  3097. and I said

  3098. mom

  3099. it just

  3100. seems like

  3101. I get

  3102. a new

  3103. sin

  3104. every year

  3105. like I

  3106. can look

  3107. at the

  3108. calendar

  3109. and tell

  3110. you

  3111. this is

  3112. the year

  3113. of anger

  3114. and this

  3115. is the year

  3116. of impatience

  3117. and like

  3118. what's going

  3119. on am I

  3120. just getting

  3121. worse

  3122. and my mom

  3123. said no

  3124. it may be

  3125. the case

  3126. that when

  3127. you become

  3128. more spiritually

  3129. mature

  3130. the Holy

  3131. Spirit

  3132. sort of

  3133. turns up

  3134. the magnification

  3135. on the

  3136. microscope

  3137. and you can

  3138. see more

  3139. clearly all

  3140. these things

  3141. you didn't

  3142. see before

  3143. and what I

  3144. found is that

  3145. repentance

  3146. needs to be

  3147. an ongoing

  3148. thing

  3149. over and

  3150. over and

  3151. over

  3152. Martin Luther's

  3153. first thesis

  3154. of the 95

  3155. is when the

  3156. Lord said

  3157. repent

  3158. he meant

  3159. that the

  3160. life of the

  3161. believer

  3162. should be

  3163. one of

  3164. continual

  3165. repentance

  3166. so repentance

  3167. is a thing

  3168. that I tend

  3169. to do

  3170. try to do

  3171. every day

  3172. sometimes

  3173. I can

  3174. tell

  3175. when

  3176. sort of

  3177. the channel

  3178. to the

  3179. Holy Spirit

  3180. is a little

  3181. bit clogged

  3182. and I

  3183. know

  3184. that I'm

  3185. harboring

  3186. sins

  3187. that I

  3188. have not

  3189. yet

  3190. confessed

  3191. so what

  3192. I'll often

  3193. do is

  3194. just like

  3195. in the

  3196. morning

  3197. you pray

  3198. through your

  3199. schedule

  3200. of the

  3201. day

  3202. at the

  3203. end

  3204. you do

  3205. it again

  3206. you say

  3207. Lord

  3208. I really

  3209. failed

  3210. there

  3211. I was

  3212. impatient

  3213. with that

  3214. person

  3215. there

  3216. I really

  3217. want to

  3218. do

  3219. better

  3220. would you

  3221. give me

  3222. the grace

  3223. to do

  3224. it

  3225. and thank

  3226. you

  3227. for the

  3228. cross

  3229. that I

  3230. know

  3231. that my

  3232. efforts

  3233. at repentance

  3234. here

  3235. don't even

  3236. have to be

  3237. perfect

  3238. I can

  3239. trust you

  3240. with the

  3241. sins

  3242. I don't

  3243. even see

  3244. and know

  3245. that you

  3246. have taken

  3247. care of

  3248. them on

  3249. the cross

  3250. and so

  3251. strangely enough

  3252. repentance

  3253. makes the

  3254. cross sweeter

  3255. for you

  3256. okay

  3257. okay

  3258. thank you

  3259. right

  3260. thank you
