  1. We are going to read Matthew chapter 4 verse 18 to Matthew chapter 5 verse 2.

    Matthew 4:18 Matthew 5:2

  2. Tonight we're beginning our summer evening service series in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

  3. It's one of the most well-known parts of Jesus' teaching, including the golden rule, the Lord's

  4. prayer, the command to love our enemies, the invitation to seek, and the promise that

  5. those who seek will find, and all kinds of other things that you might have heard somewhere

  6. before.

  7. But we want to look more deeply into it and see what it has to say to us.

  8. So tonight I want to paint the big picture and look at some of the background of the Sermon

  9. on the Mount and sort of give you the 30,000 foot view and then we'll walk through the forest

  10. over the next 12 weeks.

  11. All right, so Matthew chapter 4 starting at verse 18, it's page 809 if you're looking in

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  12. one of the pew Bibles.

  13. Here we go.

  14. While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he, Jesus, saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter

  15. and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen.

  16. And he said to them, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.

  17. Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

  18. And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his

  19. brother in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets.

  20. And he called them.

  21. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

  22. And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel

  23. of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.

  24. So his fame spread throughout all Syria and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted

  25. with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics.

  26. And he healed them.

  27. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis and from Jerusalem and Judea

  28. and from beyond the Jordan.

  29. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain.

  30. And when he sat down, his disciples came to him and he opened his mouth and taught them.

  31. So we're looking at tonight the introduction to the Sermon on the Mount.

  32. Many people have admired the Sermon on the Mount throughout history.

  33. Thomas Jefferson said that Jesus' moral teachings embodied in this sermon were the most sublime

  34. and benevolent code of morals which has ever been offered to mankind.

  35. Or Gandhi, the Indian leader who is not a Christian, said,

  36. Christ's Sermon on the Mount fills me with bliss even today.

  37. Its sweet verses have the power to quench my agony of soul.

  38. He read from the Sermon on the Mount every day and found in it the inspiration for his

  39. non-violent resistance movement.

  40. But while some people have been inspired by the Sermon on the Mount, others have found

  41. it intimidating.

  42. Jesus says things like,

  43. If your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away.

  44. Now he didn't mean that literally, but still, it's a very serious statement.

  45. Or, if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other also.

  46. Or, you must be perfect, as your heavenly father is perfect.

  47. Or, do not be anxious about your life.

  48. Do not be anxious about tomorrow.

  49. Period.

  50. And at the end, he says,

  51. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  52. but only the one who does the will of my father, who is in heaven.

  53. And, several years ago, there was an English professor named Virginia Stem Owens

  54. at a large university down in Texas.

  55. And she assigned the Sermon on the Mount to her freshman English class.

  56. It was part of a, it was sort of a great books class in the history of literature and ethics.

  57. And she asked him to write brief response papers.

  58. Here are what some of the students wrote.

  59. One student wrote,

  60. Another student said,

  61. So we might say that throughout history,

  62. people have had a love-hate relationship with the Sermon on the Mount.

  63. And with Jesus, himself.

  64. On the one hand, we're attracted by its vision of the good life.

  65. On the other hand, we're overwhelmed by its uncompromising moral demands.

  66. Now, if you look at the Sermon on the Mount, and you take it seriously,

  67. the one thing that is really hard to do is remain neutral and complacent.

  68. And say, eh, whatever.

  69. If you really read this, you can't say that.

  70. And Jesus, in the end, he insists that there are two ways to go.

  71. And there is no third way in the middle.

  72. There's a narrow road that leads to life,

  73. or there's a broad road that leads to destruction.

  74. There's a house built on the rock,

  75. and there's a house built on the sand.

  76. And the house built on the rock survives the storm,

  77. and the one built on the sand collapses with a great crash.

  78. Jesus insists that a decision must be made one way or the other,

  79. and you can't be neutral.

  80. So over the next three months,

  81. we want to dive into Jesus' Sermon on the Mount

  82. and really wrestle with it.

  83. And seek to hear and be affected by what Jesus is saying.

  84. So we're going to go through it part by part.

  85. But tonight, I want to give you the big picture.

  86. Because when people read the Sermon on the Mount,

  87. as well as some other parts of the Bible,

  88. sometimes you can lose the forest for the trees.

  89. Okay, you can ask,

  90. well, what does it mean when Jesus says

  91. you should not take any oaths?

  92. Does that mean you shouldn't swear on the Bible

  93. if you have to testify in court?

  94. You know, if you start there,

  95. with those kind of picky questions,

  96. you can miss the whole point.

  97. But I want to give us the big picture

  98. that will help put all the details into perspective.

  99. And the big picture theme is this.

  100. The Sermon on the Mount describes

  101. what life looks like

  102. when Jesus brings us into God's kingdom

  103. by his grace.

  104. It's a description of life in God's kingdom

  105. when we've been called in by grace,

  106. by Jesus' grace.

  107. Now, I want to step back for a minute

  108. and sort of set this in the whole story of the Bible.

  109. In the Old Testament,

  110. the people of Israel were slaves in the land of Egypt.

  111. And they were under the rule of a cruel king,

  112. Pharaoh,

  113. who wanted to abuse them and use them and kill them.

  114. And they were helpless.

  115. They couldn't do anything to rescue themselves,

  116. but they cried out to God,

  117. and God heard their cry,

  118. and God came and listened to them

  119. and brought them out.

  120. And in Exodus chapter 19,

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  121. he says,

  122. I carried you on eagle's wings

  123. and brought you to myself.

  124. And he said,

  125. now you will be for me

  126. a kingdom of priests

  127. and a holy nation.

  128. In other words,

  129. set apart people for myself.

  130. So God saved them by his grace

  131. and brought them into his kingdom.

  132. And then what happens next?

  133. Then he says,

  134. well, since you're part of my kingdom,

  135. instead of that cruel tyrant Pharaoh's kingdom,

  136. since you're part of my kingdom now,

  137. I want to teach you

  138. what it means to live with me as your king.

  139. A life that reflects my character

  140. and my ways

  141. and my purposes in the world.

  142. So he led them to Mount Sinai,

  143. and Moses went up the mountain

  144. to receive the law from God,

  145. and then he gave them the law,

  146. beginning with the Ten Commandments

  147. and going on from there.

  148. So the law wasn't

  149. God saying to the people,

  150. here's what you have to do

  151. to live up to the standard,

  152. and if you live up to the standard,

  153. then I'll accept you.

  154. No, he had already

  155. saved them by his grace,

  156. brought them into his kingdom,

  157. and he gave them the law

  158. to teach them how to live

  159. in his kingdom.

  160. Now, if you look at the book of Matthew,

  161. the reason why I'm

  162. doing all this background,

  163. you see the same pattern

  164. in the first chapters

  165. of the book of Matthew.

  166. If you want to flip back

  167. a little bit,

  168. Jesus' life actually follows

  169. many of the same patterns

  170. of Moses.

  171. So when Jesus is born,

  172. the people of Israel

  173. are under the rule

  174. of a cruel king named Herod.

  175. Chapter 2, verse 13 through 18

  176. describes this.

  177. And Herod actually targets Jesus

  178. and wants to kill him.

  179. Just like Pharaoh

  180. targeted the Hebrew babies

  181. and Moses in Exodus.

  182. But God preserved Moses

  183. and he preserves Jesus.

  184. Then, chapter 2, verse 13,

  185. Jesus actually goes down

  186. to Egypt with his family

  187. and then he is brought back

  188. to the land of Israel.

  189. And Matthew points out

  190. that that's a fulfillment

  191. of this pattern

  192. of the Old Testament

  193. that follows the same pattern

  194. as the story of Israel

  195. being brought out of Egypt

  196. by God.

  197. Then you go on, chapter 4.

  198. It says Jesus was led

  199. by the Spirit

  200. into the wilderness.

  201. Well, isn't that the same thing

  202. that happened to the Israelites, right?

  203. When they left Egypt,

  204. where did they go?

  205. They went in the wilderness

  206. for 40 years.

  207. And Jesus was in the wilderness

  208. for 40 days

  209. and 40 nights.

  210. So we see many

  211. of the same patterns

  212. except that

  213. in the Old Testament,

  214. the people of Israel

  215. failed in the wilderness,

  216. but Jesus is perfectly faithful

  217. to God in the wilderness.

  218. Now we get to chapter 4.

  219. Jesus calls people out

  220. to follow him.

  221. He says, repent,

  222. chapter 4, verse 17,

  223. for the kingdom of heaven

  224. is at hand.

  225. And then he calls

  226. his disciples

  227. to follow him.

  228. And eventually

  229. he calls 12 disciples

  230. just like there were

  231. 12 tribes of Israel.

  232. So you see,

  233. Jesus is following

  234. this same pattern

  235. of God calling people

  236. out by his grace,

  237. rescuing them by grace,

  238. and calling them

  239. into his kingdom.

  240. Notice how Jesus

  241. calls his disciples

  242. in verses 18 through 22,

  243. which we read earlier.

  244. Jesus doesn't

  245. set up interviews

  246. to interview

  247. a long list of candidates

  248. and figure out

  249. who's best fit

  250. for the job.

  251. He doesn't

  252. recruit lots of people

  253. to fill out applications.

  254. He's not like

  255. a college admissions office.

  256. Right?

  257. They want to recruit

  258. as many people

  259. as they can to apply

  260. so that they can

  261. lower their acceptance rate

  262. so that they can be seen

  263. as the most exclusive

  264. among all the schools.

  265. Jesus doesn't do that.

  266. He just sees people

  267. and he calls them

  268. personally,

  269. intentionally,

  270. and effectually.

  271. He says,

  272. follow me

  273. and I will make you

  274. fishers of men.

  275. In other words,

  276. I will be

  277. your resume.

  278. I will be the one

  279. who qualifies you

  280. for the job.

  281. And he says,

  282. drop everything

  283. and follow me.

  284. And that's true

  285. for everyone

  286. who comes

  287. to follow Jesus,

  288. that Jesus has

  289. called you

  290. by his grace

  291. into his kingdom.

  292. You know,

  293. if you want

  294. to follow Jesus,

  295. you don't have

  296. to prove yourself.

  297. Instead,

  298. it's exactly

  299. the opposite.

  300. All that you need

  301. is nothing.

  302. All that you need

  303. is to recognize

  304. your need

  305. for Jesus

  306. and to cling

  307. to him.

  308. And Jesus says,

  309. I will make you

  310. what I've called

  311. you to be.

  312. You're not

  313. what you need

  314. to be,

  315. but I will make you

  316. fishers of men.

  317. I will make you

  318. what I've called

  319. you to be.

  320. And that is

  321. very encouraging.

  322. Let me just

  323. stop for a moment.

  324. If you're a follower

  325. of Jesus,

  326. this should be

  327. very encouraging

  328. that

  329. God has called

  330. you by his grace.

  331. He's reached

  332. out to you

  333. personally

  334. and intentionally

  335. and affectionately.

  336. He's brought you

  337. in to his kingdom.

  338. And he said,

  339. I want you

  340. to follow me.

  341. I see you

  342. and I will make you

  343. what I've called

  344. you to be.

  345. It's a beautiful thing.

  346. You can't live up

  347. to it on your own.

  348. You can't qualify

  349. it for it

  350. on your own.

  351. You can't prove

  352. yourself

  353. because we are

  354. all sinners

  355. and we all fall short.

  356. But he has called

  357. us into his kingdom.

  358. So now

  359. we come to chapter 5.

  360. The Sermon on the Mount.

  361. And what Jesus does here

  362. is he tells us

  363. this is what it means

  364. to live in

  365. my kingdom.

  366. This is actually

  367. the first of five

  368. large sections

  369. of Jesus' teaching

  370. in the Gospel of Matthew.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  371. Chapter 5 through 7

  372. is the Sermon on the Mount.

  373. Chapter 10

  374. he sends the disciples

  375. out on mission.

  376. Chapter 13

  377. is parables

  378. about the kingdom.

  379. Chapter 18

  380. is teaching about

  381. the community

  382. of believers.

  383. Chapter 24 and 25

  384. is about the coming

  385. of the Son of Man.

  386. The point is

  387. there's these five

  388. large sections

  389. of Jesus' teaching

  390. and many people think

  391. and I think it's likely

  392. that Matthew

  393. deliberately arranged

  394. his book this way.

  395. That just as there

  396. were five books

  397. of Moses

  398. in the Old Testament

  399. that comprise

  400. the law

  401. or the teaching

  402. for the people

  403. of Israel.

  404. In Matthew

  405. Jesus has five

  406. large sections

  407. of teaching

  408. that summarize

  409. his teaching

  410. for the church

  411. for those

  412. who follow him.

  413. And it's reinforcing

  414. this theme

  415. of Jesus

  416. as sort of

  417. the new Moses

  418. the deliverer

  419. and the teacher

  420. of God's

  421. renewed people.

  422. So chapter 5

  423. verse 1

  424. seeing the crowds

  425. he went up

  426. on the mountain

  427. again

  428. just like Moses

  429. went up Mount Sinai

  430. Jesus goes up

  431. the mountain

  432. and then he sat down

  433. that was the typical

  434. posture of a teacher

  435. back then

  436. and he

  437. and his disciples

  438. the word disciple

  439. simply means

  440. a student

  441. or a follower

  442. means someone

  443. who listens.

  444. His disciples

  445. his students

  446. came to him

  447. and he opened

  448. his mouth

  449. and taught them.

  450. Jesus is deliberate

  451. and earnest

  452. and his words

  453. have weight

  454. and authority

  455. to them.

  456. So just like

  457. Moses

  458. taught the people

  459. of Israel

  460. how to live

  461. as God's people

  462. rescued by his grace

  463. and brought

  464. into his kingdom

  465. Jesus

  466. is teaching

  467. his disciples

  468. he's teaching us

  469. what it means

  470. to live

  471. in his kingdom

  472. when we've been

  473. brought in

  474. by his gracious

  475. call.

  476. So

  477. from this

  478. we can see

  479. a couple of things

  480. that the Sermon on the Mount

  481. is not

  482. and some people

  483. think this is what it is

  484. but it's not this

  485. the Sermon on the Mount

  486. is not

  487. a list of

  488. general ethical

  489. principles

  490. that are common

  491. to all religions

  492. and that can be

  493. put into practice

  494. apart from

  495. belief in Jesus.

  496. Now it's true

  497. there are parallels

  498. to many of the

  499. individual teachings

  500. in other religious

  501. traditions

  502. that's true

  503. but that's not

  504. actually

  505. the main point.

  506. It's not simply

  507. meant to be

  508. a general list

  509. of ethical principles

  510. set up

  511. that are

  512. just as relevant

  513. apart from Jesus.

  514. It's not like

  515. you know

  516. if you

  517. go to a Chinese

  518. restaurant

  519. and get

  520. fortune cookies

  521. at the end

  522. they have

  523. those little

  524. sayings

  525. those little

  526. proverbs

  527. on them

  528. you can sort

  529. of take it

  530. or leave it

  531. and they don't

  532. you know

  533. there's one at a time

  534. and you never know

  535. what you're going to get

  536. and they're totally

  537. random

  538. that's not what

  539. the Sermon on the Mount

  540. is.

  541. It's not a random

  542. collection

  543. of wisdom

  544. for life

  545. that you can sort

  546. of take what you

  547. like

  548. and leave the rest

  549. and it's not

  550. something that we

  551. can simply admire

  552. from a distance

  553. like a beautiful

  554. sunset.

  555. Jesus is describing

  556. what our lives

  557. can and must

  558. increasingly look

  559. like when we're

  560. part of his

  561. kingdom.

  562. It's marching

  563. orders from the

  564. king

  565. if you want to

  566. put it that way.

  567. It's an authoritative

  568. teaching for us

  569. who are Jesus'

  570. disciples.

  571. So that's sort of

  572. the background

  573. leading up to the

  574. Sermon on the Mount.

  575. Now let me

  576. briefly walk you

  577. through chapters

  578. five through seven.

  579. So again if you've

  580. got a Bible

  581. this is a good one

  582. to flip through.

  583. There are two

  584. major parts to the

  585. Sermon on the Mount.

  586. There's first a

  587. general part.

  588. Jesus starts in

  589. chapter five

  590. verses three

  591. through sixteen

  592. by telling his

  593. disciples who

  594. we are

  595. in general

  596. as people saved

  597. by his grace

  598. and belonging to

  599. his kingdom.

  600. So if you read

  601. the Beatitudes

  602. in chapter

  603. verse three

  604. through twelve

  605. they all start

  606. with this word

  607. blessed

  608. or blessed.

  609. In other words

  610. we're

  611. to be blessed

  612. means to receive

  613. God's favor

  614. and his delight.

  615. Means that God

  616. delights in you

  617. and that you

  618. share in that

  619. joy and delight.

  620. And the first

  621. Beatitude

  622. is the key

  623. to all the rest.

  624. It says

  625. blessed are the

  626. poor in spirit.

  627. In other words

  628. blessed are those

  629. who admit

  630. that they have

  631. nothing

  632. to prove

  633. themselves to

  634. God.

  635. Again

  636. we come

  637. empty handed

  638. and Jesus

  639. gives us

  640. his joy

  641. and delight

  642. and blessing.

  643. And then

  644. Jesus goes on

  645. to say

  646. blessed

  647. are

  648. the poor

  649. in spirit.

  650. Those who have

  651. nothing in themselves

  652. and find everything

  653. we need in Jesus.

  654. And he goes on

  655. to say blessed

  656. are those who are

  657. persecuted.

  658. Who have nothing

  659. in this world.

  660. But who love

  661. Jesus and belong

  662. to the kingdom

  663. of heaven.

  664. It's a pretty

  665. amazing promise.

  666. Right?

  667. I mean

  668. almost everything

  669. else in this world

  670. you have to

  671. qualify for

  672. in some way

  673. or other.

  674. You have to

  675. prove that you're

  676. eligible for this.

  677. And Jesus

  678. says

  679. if you've got

  680. nothing

  681. I've come

  682. to give you

  683. everything you need.

  684. and I've

  685. come not just

  686. to give you

  687. bare subsistence

  688. but I've

  689. come to

  690. bring you

  691. joy and

  692. delight.

  693. Because I'm

  694. the fountain

  695. of those

  696. things.

  697. So we're

  698. blessed

  699. as part of

  700. Jesus'

  701. kingdom.

  702. Then

  703. verse 13

  704. and 16

  705. this is

  706. again

  707. sort of

  708. the more

  709. general part

  710. about who

  711. we are.

  712. He uses

  713. three metaphors

  714. the salt

  715. of the earth

  716. the light

  717. of the world

  718. and a city

  719. on a hill.

  720. And all

  721. three of

  722. those

  723. metaphors

  724. were used

  725. in the

  726. Old Testament

  727. for the

  728. people of

  729. God.

  730. And all

  731. three of

  732. them remind

  733. us that

  734. as Jesus'

  735. followers

  736. we're not

  737. taken out

  738. of the

  739. world.

  740. Jesus isn't

  741. talking about

  742. leaving

  743. this physical

  744. universe

  745. but he is

  746. calling us

  747. to be

  748. distinct from

  749. the patterns

  750. of the world

  751. that we live

  752. in.

  753. And Jesus

  754. explains this

  755. further later

  756. on in the

  757. Sermon on

  758. the Mount.

  759. If you read

  760. through the

  761. sermon I

  762. encourage you

  763. read through

  764. the whole of

  765. chapters 5

  766. through 7

  767. sometime this

  768. week and

  769. just notice

  770. some of the

  771. general patterns

  772. that run

  773. through these

  774. chapters.

  775. And you'll

  776. see there

  777. were two

  778. contrasts that

  779. stuck out to

  780. me.

  781. Two of the

  782. contrasts that

  783. stuck out to

  784. me here when

  785. I read it

  786. through.

  787. So on the

  788. one hand

  789. Jesus says

  790. if you're

  791. my disciples

  792. you are not

  793. to be

  794. just like

  795. the religious

  796. people of

  797. the day.

  798. The Pharisees

  799. and scribes.

  800. In chapter 6

  801. he describes

  802. them as

  803. hypocrites

  804. who do their

  805. good works

  806. in order to

  807. gain praise

  808. from other

  809. people.

  810. Or as

  811. self-righteous

  812. critics who

  813. are always

  814. looking for

  815. minor flaws

  816. in other

  817. people but

  818. are blind

  819. to their

  820. own more

  821. serious

  822. failings.

  823. And Jesus

  824. says that's

  825. not what

  826. life in

  827. God's

  828. kingdom is

  829. meant to

  830. be.

  831. It's not

  832. simply what

  833. people might

  834. stereotype

  835. religion to

  836. be.

  837. On the

  838. other hand

  839. Jesus says

  840. don't be

  841. like the

  842. Gentiles.

  843. Don't be

  844. like sort

  845. of the

  846. secular

  847. world.

  848. Who are

  849. ultimately

  850. self-centered

  851. in their

  852. life apart

  853. from God.

  854. Jesus calls

  855. his disciples

  856. to a

  857. higher

  858. standard

  859. than

  860. either

  861. traditional

  862. religion

  863. or

  864. the

  865. secular

  866. culture.

  867. Now

  868. Jesus says

  869. I'm calling

  870. you to

  871. something

  872. greater

  873. than both

  874. of those.

  875. Your

  876. righteousness

  877. must surpass

  878. the Pharisees

  879. and scribes

  880. because it's

  881. dealing with

  882. your heart

  883. before God

  884. and your

  885. love must

  886. be greater

  887. than the

  888. people of

  889. this world.

  890. It must

  891. extend even

  892. to your

  893. enemies.

  894. So Jesus

  895. calls us

  896. to something

  897. greater than

  898. life in this

  899. world.

  900. To life in

  901. God's

  902. kingdom.

  903. So that's

  904. the first

  905. major section.

  906. Jesus saying

  907. this is who

  908. you are

  909. and this is

  910. what your

  911. relationship to

  912. the world

  913. is meant to

  914. look like.

  915. The second

  916. section of the

  917. Sermon on the

  918. Mount is

  919. starting at

  920. chapter 5

  921. verse 17

  922. and going

  923. to the

  924. end of

  925. chapter 7.

  926. And this

  927. tells us

  928. how we're

  929. to live

  930. in God's

  931. kingdom in

  932. more particular

  933. areas.

  934. So the

  935. point is

  936. our identity

  937. as disciples

  938. of Jesus

  939. should shape

  940. every part

  941. of our

  942. lives.

  943. And you

  944. know if you

  945. read through

  946. this sermon

  947. it's very

  948. comprehensive.

  949. Jesus

  950. teaches on

  951. anger,

  952. lust,

  953. marriage,

  954. divorce,

  955. truthfulness,

  956. love,

  957. forgiveness,

  958. prayer,

  959. giving,

  960. fasting,

  961. worrying about

  962. money,

  963. worrying about

  964. the future,

  965. being judgmental

  966. of others,

  967. and asking

  968. God for

  969. good gifts.

  970. I mean

  971. that's a

  972. pretty

  973. comprehensive

  974. list of

  975. a lot of

  976. things that

  977. we deal

  978. with.

  979. He teaches

  980. about inner

  981. attitudes and

  982. motives as

  983. well as

  984. external actions

  985. and relationships.

  986. So if you

  987. want to

  988. learn

  989. practically

  990. what does

  991. it mean to

  992. be a

  993. Christian?

  994. If you

  995. want to

  996. grow in

  997. your life

  998. with Jesus

  999. read this

  1000. sermon on

  1001. the mount.

  1002. Dig into

  1003. it because

  1004. it'll get

  1005. at lots

  1006. of different

  1007. parts of

  1008. your life

  1009. and you

  1010. won't be

  1011. able to

  1012. escape

  1013. without having

  1014. nearly your

  1015. whole life

  1016. changed and

  1017. impacted by

  1018. Jesus.

  1019. Jesus.

  1020. If you're

  1021. meeting with

  1022. somebody

  1023. maybe who's

  1024. a new

  1025. Christian who's

  1026. just starting

  1027. to follow

  1028. Jesus,

  1029. this could be

  1030. a great

  1031. passage of

  1032. scripture to

  1033. read through

  1034. together and

  1035. talk through

  1036. together.

  1037. It's where

  1038. Jesus began

  1039. with his

  1040. disciples.

  1041. Matthew put

  1042. it right at

  1043. the start of

  1044. his gospel.

  1045. And it's not

  1046. a bad place

  1047. for us to

  1048. begin either.

  1049. As we teach

  1050. one another

  1051. what does

  1052. it mean to

  1053. live in

  1054. the kingdom

  1055. of God

  1056. by the

  1057. grace of

  1058. Jesus Christ.

  1059. Now I'm

  1060. not going to

  1061. go through

  1062. this second

  1063. section in

  1064. detail.

  1065. The rest of

  1066. chapter 5 is

  1067. about obeying

  1068. God's law

  1069. from our

  1070. heart.

  1071. Chapter 6 is

  1072. about trusting

  1073. God as our

  1074. father.

  1075. And chapter 7

  1076. is about living

  1077. in the fear

  1078. of the Lord.

  1079. Those are

  1080. sort of the

  1081. big themes

  1082. that we'll

  1083. see throughout

  1084. those sections.

  1085. But I want

  1086. to fast

  1087. forward to

  1088. the end

  1089. a little bit.

  1090. So look

  1091. toward the

  1092. end of

  1093. chapter 7.

  1094. At the

  1095. end,

  1096. Jesus

  1097. challenges

  1098. us

  1099. with

  1100. four

  1101. contrasts.

  1102. Chapter 7

  1103. verse 13

  1104. and 14

  1105. he says

  1106. there are

  1107. two roads.

  1108. Well,

  1109. there are

  1110. two gates.

  1111. gates.

  1112. The narrow

  1113. gate

  1114. and the

  1115. wide

  1116. gate.

  1117. The narrow

  1118. road and

  1119. the wide

  1120. road.

  1121. And then

  1122. he says

  1123. there are

  1124. two trees

  1125. in the

  1126. next section.

  1127. Every

  1128. healthy tree

  1129. bears good

  1130. fruit,

  1131. but the

  1132. diseased

  1133. tree

  1134. bears bad

  1135. fruit.

  1136. And then

  1137. he goes

  1138. on in

  1139. 21 through

  1140. 23.

  1141. He says

  1142. there are

  1143. two kinds

  1144. of people.

  1145. The people

  1146. who say

  1147. to me,

  1148. Lord,

  1149. Lord,

  1150. and the

  1151. people who

  1152. do the

  1153. will of

  1154. the

  1155. father.

  1156. And

  1157. finally,

  1158. 24 through

  1159. 27,

  1160. he says

  1161. there are

  1162. two houses.

  1163. There's a

  1164. house built

  1165. on the

  1166. rock and

  1167. the house

  1168. built on

  1169. the sand.

  1170. And only

  1171. one will

  1172. survive

  1173. God's

  1174. judgment

  1175. in the

  1176. end.

  1177. You see,

  1178. this is a

  1179. challenging

  1180. sermon.

  1181. Because at

  1182. the end,

  1183. Jesus pushes

  1184. the issue.

  1185. He says,

  1186. you can't

  1187. stay neutral.

  1188. There's no

  1189. third way.

  1190. There are

  1191. only two

  1192. ways.

  1193. You're

  1194. either on

  1195. one road

  1196. or the

  1197. other.

  1198. He pushes

  1199. the issue.

  1200. He says,

  1201. whose kingdom

  1202. are you

  1203. living in?

  1204. Who are

  1205. you living

  1206. for?

  1207. And where

  1208. is your

  1209. life going?

  1210. And he

  1211. says,

  1212. come to

  1213. me and

  1214. follow me.

  1215. You see,

  1216. Jesus is

  1217. teaching the

  1218. disciples about

  1219. what it

  1220. means,

  1221. those who

  1222. had been

  1223. called to

  1224. him and

  1225. were committed

  1226. to follow

  1227. him.

  1228. And he's

  1229. saying,

  1230. this is

  1231. what it

  1232. means to

  1233. live in

  1234. my kingdom.

  1235. But you

  1236. know,

  1237. he also

  1238. had a ton

  1239. of other

  1240. people who

  1241. were listening.

  1242. The people

  1243. in the

  1244. crowds.

  1245. There were

  1246. whole crowds

  1247. who followed

  1248. Jesus around,

  1249. but they

  1250. weren't

  1251. committed.

  1252. They were

  1253. interested.

  1254. They were

  1255. curious.

  1256. They saw

  1257. his miracles.

  1258. They probably

  1259. wanted to

  1260. see more

  1261. miracles.

  1262. They wanted

  1263. to experience

  1264. some of

  1265. his power,

  1266. but they

  1267. weren't yet

  1268. committed and

  1269. loyal to

  1270. him.

  1271. So the

  1272. Sermon on

  1273. the Mount,

  1274. Jesus asks

  1275. us that

  1276. question.

  1277. He'll be

  1278. asking us

  1279. that question

  1280. throughout this

  1281. summer as we

  1282. look into it.

  1283. He says,

  1284. are you a

  1285. disciple?

  1286. Have you

  1287. been called,

  1288. have you

  1289. responded to

  1290. my call

  1291. to follow

  1292. me?

  1293. me?

  1294. Have you

  1295. become part

  1296. of my

  1297. kingdom?

  1298. Totally by

  1299. his grace?

  1300. Or are you

  1301. interested but

  1302. still on the

  1303. outside?

  1304. And the

  1305. invitation is,

  1306. if you're

  1307. interested but

  1308. still on the

  1309. outside,

  1310. the invitation

  1311. from Jesus is,

  1312. come and

  1313. follow me,

  1314. and I will

  1315. make you what

  1316. I've called

  1317. you to be.

  1318. Jesus says,

  1319. in my

  1320. kingdom,

  1321. there's great

  1322. blessing and

  1323. there's great

  1324. joy and it'll

  1325. last forever.

  1326. And outside,

  1327. there's no hope

  1328. and everything

  1329. will perish.

  1330. let's pray.

  1331. Lord Jesus,

  1332. we pray

  1333. that as you

  1334. called the

  1335. first disciples,

  1336. that you

  1337. would be

  1338. calling us

  1339. to you.

  1340. Lord,

  1341. we thank you

  1342. Lord,

  1343. for those

  1344. of us who

  1345. have been

  1346. called to

  1347. you,

  1348. we pray

  1349. that we

  1350. would hear

  1351. your voice.

  1352. Lord,

  1353. that your

  1354. Holy Spirit

  1355. would work

  1356. in us,

  1357. that you

  1358. would teach

  1359. us more

  1360. and more

  1361. what it

  1362. means to

  1363. reflect your
