  1. Good evening, everyone. Welcome back, or for the first time today, whichever one it is.

  2. Tonight we'll continue with our series in the Sermon on the Mount.

  3. We'll be looking at verses 13 through 16 tonight of chapter 5.

  4. We'll just continue to pick up and to build on what Greg and Nick have already preached on throughout this time.

  5. Let me start us off with a word of prayer.

  6. Lord, you've called us. You've elected us. You have a purpose laid out before our lives.

  7. You've made us unique. You've separated us in so many ways.

  8. Lord, we need to know. We need to yearn and desire to know you better and to know how it is that we fit into your great plan,

  9. what it is that you've called us to.

  10. And I just pray that through this series, through us looking at what salt and light is,

  11. that we will see how we could be that in the lives of those around us as you send us out.

  12. And I pray that all these things in Christ's name. Amen.

  13. So Greg started off this series about two weeks ago, giving an overview of the Sermon on the Mount.

  14. And thank God for a podcast. I was sick that week. I couldn't make it. I would have loved to turn it in person.

  15. But the thing that from that that stuck out to me was that he said that this life we live in Christ,

  16. this is what our lives can and must look like, these verses, this sermon.

  17. As he points out a lot of things, as he speaks these blessings,

  18. as he gives all of these practical lessons on these different topics,

  19. as I kind of like to look at the Sermon on the Mount, is this lesson in practical holiness.

  20. It's something we can live out on a daily basis as these things that, well,

  21. all these things may not always be affecting our lives at the same time,

  22. or these things may never touch us, but he's equipping us and he's giving us the tools to live this out,

  23. to live this life out that he's calling us to.

  24. And we see a little bit earlier than this, he just calls his first disciples,

  25. like right before this, at the end of chapter 4, he calls them.

  26. And even as we see in Luke, he begins to teach a little bit more after that.

  27. His disciples are around him, and this is a perfect opportunity for him to bring them in,

  28. to start to teach them, for them to see what his ministry is going to entail,

  29. what their ministry is going to entail, what it looks like to follow God.

  30. And it isn't clear what they kind of thought of him during these early times,

  31. but there was something there that made them leave their fishing boats and their tax booths

  32. to follow this great or good teacher, however they may have thought of him.

  33. And we see, we don't really see Jesus giving them verses to remember wise.

  34. We don't see him giving them laws to follow and things like that,

  35. but he's just saying, follow me, continue to follow me.

  36. And we can take that example into our lives.

  37. And he's going to break down some things and give us some warnings.

  38. He's going to give us some exhortations.

  39. He's going to encourage us in all these different ways.

  40. So whether we continue to follow him or continue not to follow him,

  41. he's going to speak on both of those things.

  42. And as we kind of see his disciples, they really didn't have the social capital to go anywhere.

  43. No other teachers were clamoring to make them.

  44. They're star pupils as we kind of see in Acts like the Sanhedrin,

  45. as they stand before him, like they perceive that these were uneducated men.

  46. And another point to pick up is when he called them, they really weren't qualified.

  47. They weren't the right people.

  48. They didn't have the right stuff.

  49. So as we see him calling them,

  50. as we see him calling them,

  51. it wasn't because of who they were or what they were doing,

  52. but it was because of his great plan.

  53. And we see that in these verses.

  54. And he starts off, you are.

  55. He doesn't say you could be.

  56. You have the potential to be.

  57. You might be.

  58. He says, you are.

  59. There was no posters of hope or progress or change.

  60. There wasn't an image of President Obama looking at them with these bold words in Hevetica,

  61. staring them right in the face that encouraged them and spurred them on.

  62. But this was God sitting before them, teaching them, telling them who they were,

  63. giving them a new identity.

  64. He was preparing them.

  65. Though they might not use these things now,

  66. though they may not perceive fully what was going on there,

  67. but he was giving them something and equipping them for their future ministry of what was to come.

  68. And we see Jesus training and teaching them here

  69. of what was pretty much wasn't fulfilled to Pentecost came,

  70. to the Spirit came upon them

  71. and gave them the power to live these things out better.

  72. And as we dive into this section,

  73. we're just going to look at what salt is,

  74. what light is,

  75. what Jesus has to say about us

  76. going out and living out these things in the world.

  77. And I'll go ahead and read this for us real quick.

  78. Matthew 5, verses 13 through 16.

    Matthew 5:13–16

  79. I believe that's on page 810 of your pew Bibles.

  80. Everybody there?

  81. You are the salt of the earth,

  82. but if salt has lost its taste,

  83. how shall its saltiness be restored?

  84. It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out

  85. and trampled under people's feet.

  86. You are the light of the world.

  87. A city set upon a hill cannot be hidden.

  88. No other people light a lamp and put it under a basket,

  89. but on a stand,

  90. and it gives light to all the house.

  91. In the same way,

  92. let your light shine before others

  93. so that they may see your good works

  94. and give glory to your Father who's in heaven.

  95. So,

  96. why do I even need to continue?

  97. I should be done here.

  98. Be salt.

  99. Be light.

  100. Glorify your Father in heaven.

  101. Pretty simple instructions, right?

  102. We can all kind of get that and grasp that.

  103. But what are we doing there?

  104. Are we assuming that we know what these things mean?

  105. Are we assuming that the person next to us

  106. has the same gospel-centered worldview

  107. that's going to point them in the same direction that we are?

  108. And I'm just thankful that the Lord gives us this body,

  109. this community.

  110. He gives us preaching.

  111. He gives us teaching

  112. to bring us together,

  113. to be on one accord.

  114. And I guess a lot of times when we look at this,

  115. we look at this salt,

  116. and we look at this light,

  117. and we think we have it figured out.

  118. We kind of look at the salt,

  119. but a lot of times we just want to talk about being light.

  120. We're a light to our coworkers.

  121. We're a light to our friends.

  122. We want to be a light to our families.

  123. But what does that really look like?

  124. What is Jesus calling us to here?

  125. And then in that,

  126. if we just kind of skip the salt,

  127. then how do we be light?

  128. And I think it's really important,

  129. as much as the substance is,

  130. the way he ordered it here,

  131. the salt comes before the light.

  132. And I think there's something to that

  133. that he really wants us to see.

  134. So, in glorifying God,

  135. do we just become salty?

  136. And setting upon a hill,

  137. does that make the light brighter?

  138. Like, how do all these things fit together?

  139. And we're seeing here,

  140. to glorify God,

  141. he says,

  142. and to glorify God,

  143. he says,

  144. your light must shine before others.

  145. In order for your light to shine before others,

  146. it can't be hid.

  147. And if it's not hid,

  148. it should be set upon a hill.

  149. It should be put in a prominent place.

  150. But in order for this light to shine,

  151. there must be salt.

  152. You must be salt.

  153. Not just something that fades away,

  154. loses its saltiness,

  155. but he's talking about a salt

  156. with lasting effects,

  157. with a lasting savoring

  158. that we get from that.

  159. And a lot of us think,

  160. being light is easy,

  161. we can sound spiritual,

  162. we won't judge people,

  163. we can be open and affirming,

  164. and most importantly,

  165. we can be nice.

  166. And we're a light to people,

  167. and that's what we see a lot of times,

  168. people just want to be nice,

  169. and we think that's being a light to someone.

  170. So what is salt saying right here?

  171. We're like,

  172. what's tying all this together?

  173. And as we look at this first section

  174. of the Sermon on the Mount,

  175. he's telling us who we are,

  176. who he's calling us to be,

  177. what he's calling us to do.

  178. And as we look at the salt,

  179. we see before that,

  180. he says,

  181. we're to be poor in spirit,

  182. we're to be merciful,

  183. we're to be meek,

  184. we're to be peacemakers,

  185. pure in heart,

  186. hungering and thirsting for righteousness.

  187. So what I see him saying here is,

  188. who we know,

  189. who we see ourselves to be

  190. will affect how we operate,

  191. it'll affect what we do,

  192. it'll affect how we think,

  193. how we talk,

  194. and it'll affect how we are salt

  195. and light in the world.

  196. So for us to operate it

  197. in salt and light,

  198. we have to be continually

  199. reminding ourselves

  200. of who we are,

  201. remembering Jesus,

  202. describing who we can be

  203. and who we should be

  204. as believers.

  205. And it can be tough,

  206. like,

  207. we can be people pleasers,

  208. we can be feeling the weight

  209. of our own sin,

  210. we can be feeling condemned,

  211. we can think that we're not quite there

  212. in our faith where we don't understand

  213. the gospel enough to be

  214. salt and light in the world.

  215. Or it could be that

  216. we just have this humongous log in our eye

  217. and we're always looking out,

  218. like,

  219. that speck in their eye

  220. is just so horrifying

  221. that we don't see what's going on with us,

  222. we're not aware of who we are,

  223. we're ignoring that.

  224. But Christ steps in and says,

  225. you are,

  226. you are the salt of the earth,

  227. you are the light of the world.

  228. And we just can't leave this,

  229. leave this teaching here

  230. and be like,

  231. okay,

  232. I'm salt,

  233. I'm light,

  234. I'm just going to go out

  235. and love people.

  236. What does that mean?

  237. How does that live itself out?

  238. What embodies that?

  239. Or do we just think

  240. these are too lofty

  241. a characteristic of our lives

  242. to attain?

  243. Do we think,

  244. well,

  245. I'll get there someday,

  246. I'll work on

  247. this other thing first

  248. and then I'll work on

  249. being salt in life.

  250. I'll work on myself first

  251. before I go out

  252. and be a light to others.

  253. And so,

  254. I would kind of view this

  255. as kind of like

  256. bearing fruit.

  257. We have love,

  258. we have kindness,

  259. gentleness,

  260. peace,

  261. patience,

  262. self-control.

  263. I can never say all of them

  264. for some reason.

  265. But we have all these fruits

  266. that we,

  267. we have all these fruit

  268. that we bear

  269. and how do we get there?

  270. Like,

  271. what does that come from?

  272. How does Paul get us

  273. to that point?

  274. And he says,

  275. walk by the Spirit.

  276. That's his way

  277. of getting to these fruit,

  278. walking by the Spirit.

  279. And to live this out,

  280. to live out our lives

  281. as being salt,

  282. we,

  283. we need to be regenerated.

  284. We need to

  285. be walking in the Spirit.

  286. We need to be

  287. the living out

  288. and not just

  289. acting these things out.

  290. And what I mean by that

  291. is,

  292. is to live these things out,

  293. is to,

  294. is to have our hearts changed

  295. and not just our actions.

  296. to,

  297. to live them out,

  298. to,

  299. to know what it is,

  300. to,

  301. to genuinely love someone,

  302. to genuinely have kindness,

  303. to genuinely want to

  304. have self-control

  305. and not just to be

  306. disciplined for a little while

  307. and,

  308. and then kind of

  309. fall away from it.

  310. But if our hearts change,

  311. that,

  312. that changes the rest of us.

  313. And as we,

  314. as we look to be salt,

  315. we,

  316. we see around us,

  317. we live in a fallen world.

  318. And,

  319. and salt serves many purposes.

  320. It can preserve,

  321. it can,

  322. it can,

  323. it can season,

  324. it can,

  325. it can do all these things.

  326. And I,

  327. I don't think

  328. Christ right here

  329. is just calling us

  330. to do one thing.

  331. He's not just calling us

  332. to,

  333. to evangelism.

  334. He's not just calling us

  335. to,

  336. to love our neighbor.

  337. He's just not calling us

  338. to,

  339. to love our brothers.

  340. He's,

  341. he's calling us

  342. to do all these things

  343. as we are salt.

  344. And in that,

  345. we're,

  346. we're,

  347. we're,

  348. we begin to embody this word

  349. that he's speaking to them.

  350. So,

  351. we're embodying this word,

  352. we're living by the spirit.

  353. And we also kind of see that

  354. in the vision of our church

  355. where we are

  356. reaching locally

  357. and,

  358. and affecting globally

  359. through the word of life.

  360. And,

  361. and I think

  362. that's just a,

  363. a cool vision

  364. for us to have.

  365. And I think

  366. that's just

  367. embodies the fact

  368. that,

  369. that we're to be salt

  370. in this world.

  371. And Jesus seems

  372. to,

  373. to liken light

  374. to being a,

  375. a city set upon a hill.

  376. It's like

  377. in this prominent place.

  378. You can't,

  379. you can't ignore it.

  380. You can't miss it.

  381. It's just right there

  382. in front of you.

  383. It's a beacon

  384. to all who see it.

  385. But what else

  386. is light?

  387. What do we think of

  388. when we,

  389. when we think of being light?

  390. Is it just

  391. kind of

  392. exemplifying

  393. a few things

  394. in front of a person?

  395. Or is it more than that?

  396. Is it,

  397. how is it affecting

  398. our relationship with God?

  399. How is it coming

  400. out of that relationship?

  401. Is our,

  402. is the life

  403. we're living

  404. giving praise to God?

  405. How does that,

  406. how does that

  407. become light?

  408. And how,

  409. and how in that

  410. when we walk

  411. by the spirit

  412. and the fruit

  413. being made,

  414. manifest,

  415. how,

  416. how is that

  417. exemplifying light?

  418. in our small group

  419. we've been,

  420. we've been looking

  421. at the book of Luke

  422. and,

  423. and I think

  424. is,

  425. is really,

  426. is really telling

  427. with,

  428. with the Lord's,

  429. the mission statement

  430. for,

  431. for his ministry

  432. as he,

  433. as he points out

  434. in chapter four,

  435. he says a few things.

  436. He says,

  437. proclaim good news

  438. to the poor,

  439. proclaim liberty

  440. to the captive,

  441. recover sight

  442. before the blind,

  443. proclaim the year

  444. of our Lord's favor.

  445. And we see

  446. in these things

  447. that he,

  448. that he's come

  449. to do something.

  450. He's making himself

  451. known,

  452. he's making himself

  453. visible before the people

  454. so that they know

  455. what he's,

  456. what he's coming for.

  457. But before that,

  458. he,

  459. he says one thing.

  460. He says,

  461. the spirit of the Lord

  462. is upon me

  463. and he's anointed me.

  464. And with that,

  465. he goes into

  466. these other things.

  467. And,

  468. and not only

  469. as we look at light,

  470. is it,

  471. is it this beacon

  472. that people kind of

  473. see from afar off

  474. and,

  475. and come to?

  476. But,

  477. but with light,

  478. there has to be

  479. something else.

  480. He's,

  481. I don't think he's saying

  482. you are the light

  483. of the world,

  484. you're just kind of

  485. added to the light

  486. that was there.

  487. If he,

  488. if he was saying that,

  489. then,

  490. then why would,

  491. why would he,

  492. why would we need

  493. this extra light?

  494. Why would we,

  495. why would we need

  496. more light?

  497. Why would he need

  498. us to be light?

  499. Why would he specifically

  500. say you are light

  501. and not say

  502. the world is light

  503. as well?

  504. And I think we need

  505. to look at that

  506. because

  507. in this world

  508. we live in,

  509. there,

  510. there is darkness.

  511. And not only

  512. being a weakness,

  513. but,

  514. but shedding light

  515. on that,

  516. that light piercing

  517. into the darkness.

  518. Even if you're

  519. in a dark room

  520. and you see

  521. like a tiny flicker,

  522. that's something

  523. you,

  524. you acknowledge,

  525. something you can,

  526. you can notice

  527. in a dark,

  528. in a dark room.

  529. You can see

  530. that tiny flicker.

  531. You can see

  532. the light

  533. in contrast

  534. to that darkness.

  535. And,

  536. and it's kind of

  537. been,

  538. been our natural state

  539. since the fall

  540. of Adam.

  541. Being,

  542. being blinded

  543. to this truth

  544. of the darkness

  545. within our own hearts

  546. and in the darkness

  547. around us.

  548. And the defibrillator

  549. of God's word

  550. is we're

  551. unresponsive

  552. to that

  553. on our own.

  554. We,

  555. we have no way

  556. or no ability

  557. to respond

  558. to that.

  559. And how,

  560. and how do people

  561. get along

  562. so well

  563. in this world

  564. if we know

  565. this is the truth?

  566. Well,

  567. if you,

  568. if you aren't

  569. responsible to that,

  570. then,

  571. then you're not

  572. able to respond

  573. to that.

  574. how you know,

  575. how do you know

  576. what you're being

  577. saved from?

  578. Is it hell?

  579. Is it an angry God?

  580. Am I being saved

  581. to follow these rules?

  582. When am I going

  583. to get out

  584. of my salvation?

  585. And we can

  586. just go on

  587. and on

  588. with that,

  589. with that list.

  590. and we were,

  591. and we can

  592. continue to realize

  593. how we once

  594. walked

  595. and lived

  596. and lived

  597. in that darkness.

  598. You were once

  599. that way,

  600. I was once

  601. that way.

  602. For me,

  603. it was,

  604. I can do it

  605. all myself.

  606. I've been driving

  607. since I was

  608. in the second grade.

  609. I've been

  610. working

  611. ever since

  612. middle school.

  613. I mean,

  614. what do I have

  615. that I can't

  616. just provide

  617. for myself?

  618. And,

  619. and God

  620. gave me

  621. a pretty good

  622. gut check

  623. my freshman

  624. year of college.

  625. Asking myself

  626. a lot of hard

  627. questions,

  628. not coming up

  629. with any answers,

  630. trying to make

  631. my own explanations,

  632. those things

  633. not working out.

  634. and in the midst

  635. of that,

  636. hearing the gospel

  637. and,

  638. and seeing,

  639. and seeing

  640. these,

  641. these believers

  642. around me

  643. who,

  644. who genuinely

  645. followed

  646. and loved Christ

  647. and in that being,

  648. my mind being,

  649. being open

  650. to the truth.

  651. And,

  652. and John says,

  653. in him being Jesus

  654. was life

  655. and the life

  656. was the light

  657. of men.

  658. Hmm.

  659. So this,

  660. so this light

  661. that,

  662. that pierces,

  663. pierces the darkness

  664. brings life

  665. with it.

  666. It just doesn't

  667. come to,

  668. to illuminate.

  669. It is bringing,

  670. it's bringing life,

  671. it's bringing

  672. something living

  673. with it.

  674. And with that

  675. being said,

  676. we,

  677. we need to

  678. be constantly

  679. being reminded

  680. that,

  681. that this world

  682. is broken

  683. and,

  684. and sin

  685. has severely

  686. wounded

  687. our minds,

  688. our bodies,

  689. our soul.

  690. But we see here

  691. that,

  692. that all is not lost.

  693. Like,

  694. you,

  695. you wouldn't

  696. break out

  697. the salt

  698. to,

  699. to preserve

  700. something

  701. that was already

  702. rotting,

  703. that was already,

  704. already gone.

  705. There's something

  706. left to preserve,

  707. there's something

  708. left to,

  709. to save.

  710. So,

  711. so for us

  712. to be,

  713. to be salt

  714. in this world,

  715. there's something

  716. left that,

  717. that God is doing,

  718. that God is working

  719. in this world.

  720. Like,

  721. we're not the,

  722. just the salt

  723. of the church,

  724. we're not just

  725. the salt

  726. of our houses,

  727. but,

  728. but he calls us

  729. the salt

  730. of the earth.

  731. And he calls us

  732. the light

  733. of the world.

  734. And metaphorically,

  735. metaphorically here,

  736. he,

  737. he calls us

  738. a lamp.

  739. And I think

  740. in that,

  741. we,

  742. we can be ones

  743. that,

  744. that reveals

  745. the riches

  746. of God's great glory

  747. in the world

  748. and to the people

  749. around us.

  750. We have

  751. great opportunities

  752. with,

  753. with whoever

  754. it may be,

  755. co-workers,

  756. classmates,

  757. friends.

  758. We,

  759. we have great

  760. opportunities

  761. to,

  762. to be a light

  763. into these

  764. people's lives.

  765. And,

  766. and something,

  767. I,

  768. I thought about,

  769. um,

  770. talking to a friend

  771. who,

  772. who came from the city.

  773. He was,

  774. um,

  775. he was visiting me,

  776. he was visiting the country.

  777. He was like,

  778. when I'm out here,

  779. it's a lot darker

  780. than I like.

  781. It's a lot darker,

  782. darker than the city.

  783. It's a lot,

  784. there's no light out here

  785. when it,

  786. when the sun goes down.

  787. And that scares me.

  788. So,

  789. so whether you're

  790. walking down

  791. Elm Street

  792. or,

  793. or York Street,

  794. let's kind of

  795. think about that.

  796. Like,

  797. when you're walking

  798. down the street,

  799. you're just kind of,

  800. it's the normal thing

  801. for us to do.

  802. Like,

  803. we're not noticing,

  804. like,

  805. the lights.

  806. We're not noticing

  807. how beautiful

  808. these

  809. DOT

  810. fixtures,

  811. how beautiful

  812. these DOT fixtures are.

  813. We're,

  814. we're just kind of

  815. walking and we're,

  816. we're realizing that

  817. there,

  818. there's light

  819. to,

  820. to light our path.

  821. And,

  822. and hopefully we can be that

  823. to the,

  824. in the lives of the people

  825. around us,

  826. that they,

  827. they're now,

  828. they're not looking to us,

  829. but they're doing

  830. what it says right here.

  831. In the same way,

  832. let your light shine

  833. before others

  834. so that they may see

  835. your good works

  836. and give glory

  837. to your Father

  838. who is in heaven.

  839. So,

  840. there,

  841. there's a summation

  842. here

  843. to be salt,

  844. to be light,

  845. and that pushes us

  846. into these good works

  847. that are going to

  848. point other people

  849. to Christ.

  850. And I'll leave you,

  851. leave you guys

  852. with that.

  853. Lord,

  854. as we

  855. depart,

  856. as we go about

  857. our weeks,

  858. that,

  859. that we may be

  860. confronted with

  861. the,

  862. the truth of this word

  863. to be,

  864. to be salt

  865. and,

  866. and light

  867. in this world

  868. and in this earth,

  869. that,

  870. that you haven't

  871. called us

  872. to a faith

  873. that,

  874. that is private

  875. and that,

  876. and that is our own,

  877. but you called,

  878. you called us

  879. to,

  880. to live it out

  881. amongst the,

  882. the people around us

  883. and,

  884. and I just pray

  885. that we would

  886. use that,

  887. just that,

  888. with your power

  889. upon us,

  890. in Christ's name.

  891. Amen.

  892. Anytime.

  893. Anybody have anything?

  894. Anything?

  895. Well,

  896. I don't know

  897. if I can't

  898. say it's different

  899. by the,

  900. but I am listening

  901. to you

  902. and when Jesus

  903. was on earth,

  904. he was the right

  905. to the Lord

  906. and he,

  907. his one that

  908. states all

  909. these examples

  910. of us,

  911. he said,

  912. the light

  913. and the darkness

  914. cannot take

  915. so we are

  916. there to be

  917. goodness

  918. and you are

  919. a great Christian

  920. and you cannot

  921. stand it.

  922. So you have

  923. to speak up

  924. to correct

  925. and to get

  926. the gospel

  927. straight.

  928. That's me,

  929. so that's what

  930. we want to get

  931. people,

  932. people,

  933. peacemakers

  934. and everything

  935. because we

  936. cannot.

  937. So we are

  938. the ones

  939. who are supposed

  940. to correct

  941. the becadness

  942. and get

  943. peace on earth

  944. because

  945. God

  946. really

  947. wants us

  948. to do that

  949. for his

  950. kingdom.

  951. That's how

  952. I see the

  953. gospel

  954. and that's

  955. how I

  956. learned

  957. because we

  958. have to

  959. become people

  960. but still

  961. we don't

  962. put up,

  963. I'm going to

  964. put up

  965. the wrongs,

  966. we don't

  967. cover it

  968. wrongs.

  969. So we

  970. as a church

  971. have to

  972. speak out

  973. that the

  974. rules of

  975. God

  976. can find

  977. people in

  978. the right

  979. way

  980. on the

  981. cross.

  982. yeah,

  983. I think

  984. in our

  985. love for

  986. people,

  987. we can't

  988. be silent

  989. on that.

  990. Yeah.

  991. Yeah.

  992. Yeah.

  993. Yeah.

  994. I think

  995. I think

  996. I think

  997. I can

  998. give an

  999. example.

  1000. There I

  1001. have,

  1002. there was

  1003. this single

  1004. lady and I

  1005. watched her

  1006. and they were

  1007. trying,

  1008. and then one

  1009. came,

  1010. suddenly I

  1011. hand,

  1012. and I

  1013. told her,

  1014. and it was

  1015. all right,

  1016. and I said,

  1017. well, I have to

  1018. say to her.

  1019. Then I

  1020. embraced her,

  1021. I told her,

  1022. and that

  1023. was like

  1024. the correction,

  1025. and she's

  1026. like,

  1027. she's not

  1028. perfect,

  1029. but she's

  1030. coming.

  1031. So that's

  1032. how we

  1033. have to

  1034. spread the

  1035. news.

  1036. We have

  1037. to teach,

  1038. we have

  1039. to rebuke,

  1040. we have

  1041. to correct.

  1042. Yeah.

  1043. So that's

  1044. all I see

  1045. there in the

  1046. gospel,

  1047. and love,

  1048. and peace,

  1049. and joy,

  1050. and happiness.

  1051. Yeah.

  1052. Thank you.

  1053. Thank you.

  1054. Anybody

  1055. else?

  1056. I would

  1057. say that

  1058. there is

  1059. something

  1060. separate and

  1061. unique about

  1062. both of

  1063. those,

  1064. but I think

  1065. the way he

  1066. groups them

  1067. here is

  1068. because they

  1069. go together.

  1070. You have

  1071. one,

  1072. and you

  1073. have the

  1074. other.

  1075. They go

  1076. hand in

  1077. hand.

  1078. Can I

  1079. say something

  1080. again?

  1081. So would

  1082. you summarize

  1083. Salt as

  1084. maybe being

  1085. the,

  1086. probably being

  1087. distinct,

  1088. something about

  1089. being distinct

  1090. for God

  1091. and that

  1092. light is

  1093. displaying that?

  1094. How would

  1095. you summarize

  1096. what's distinct

  1097. about salt

  1098. and light?

  1099. I guess

  1100. I would

  1101. put it,

  1102. I've been

  1103. searching for

  1104. words all

  1105. week to

  1106. describe them.

  1107. man.

  1108. I would

  1109. say salt

  1110. is,

  1111. hmm,

  1112. I would

  1113. say salt

  1114. is a lot

  1115. like,

  1116. it kind of

  1117. like embodies

  1118. the characteristics

  1119. of the beat

  1120. attitudes.

  1121. it's kind

  1122. of,

  1123. it's kind

  1124. of like,

  1125. I want to

  1126. say character

  1127. in a sense.

  1128. It's kind

  1129. of,

  1130. uh,

  1131. I don't

  1132. know,

  1133. I just,

  1134. when I,

  1135. when I have

  1136. the word for

  1137. it,

  1138. I'll tell

  1139. you.

  1140. But yeah,

  1141. I would,

  1142. I would view,

  1143. view light

  1144. as,

  1145. as the thing

  1146. that,

  1147. that goes

  1148. forth,

  1149. light,

  1150. light is the

  1151. thing that,

  1152. that's visible

  1153. and seen

  1154. in our

  1155. lives.

  1156. I am

  1157. a good

  1158. day,

  1159. you know,

  1160. but I'm

  1161. just saying

  1162. what is

  1163. inside of

  1164. me.

  1165. The Bible

  1166. says,

  1167. we are

  1168. the church,

  1169. we are

  1170. a royal

  1171. priesthood,

  1172. a holy

  1173. nation,

  1174. and that

  1175. means we

  1176. are safe

  1177. and home.

  1178. So,

  1179. that means

  1180. that we

  1181. are the

  1182. strong

  1183. of this

  1184. church,

  1185. so we

  1186. supposed

  1187. to,

  1188. I'm

  1189. a great

  1190. day,

  1191. you know,

  1192. that's what

  1193. I'm

  1194. seeing

  1195. that way,

  1196. that our

  1197. lives should

  1198. be lived

  1199. in such

  1200. way that

  1201. people can

  1202. be

  1203. like us,

  1204. or not,

  1205. as a bad

  1206. sense,

  1207. we should

  1208. be the

  1209. imitator

  1210. of Jesus

  1211. Christ,

  1212. so that's

  1213. how we

  1214. should be

  1215. more alive,

  1216. that other

  1217. people can

  1218. see and

  1219. try to

  1220. be like

  1221. us.

  1222. We have

  1223. good deeds,

  1224. we can

  1225. correct,

  1226. we can

  1227. love,

  1228. we love,

  1229. we are

  1230. loving people,

  1231. Christian,

  1232. we are

  1233. really loving

  1234. people,

  1235. we are

  1236. humble,

  1237. we are

  1238. gentle,

  1239. we are

  1240. kind,

  1241. and

  1242. everything,

  1243. but then

  1244. there is

  1245. forgiveness,

  1246. we don't

  1247. love,

  1248. we talk

  1249. about it,

  1250. and then

  1251. we love

  1252. me,

  1253. that we

  1254. embrace

  1255. our

  1256. love,

  1257. so that's

  1258. how I

  1259. see,

  1260. we are

  1261. soft.

  1262. Yeah.

  1263. Yeah.

  1264. great.

  1265. God's

  1266. love,

  1267. it's

  1268. taste,

  1269. what does

  1270. that

  1271. store mean?

  1272. How does

  1273. his saltiness be restored.

1274. Oh, flip that real quick.

1275. If salt has lost its taste,

1276. how shall his saltiness be restored?

1277. I've kind of read that as being like a rhetorical question.

1278. It's like in a sense like if salt loses its saltiness,

1279. then it can't get it back.

1280. You really can't reclaim that for it.

  1281. So once it's gone, it's gone.

  1282. You had a question?

1283. I'm just stretching my head.

  1284. Oh.

1285. I tend to agree with you guys.

  1286. It's a character, a characteristic of a person.

1287. You know, you've heard of his question,

  1288. he's a normal salt, or she's salt.

1289. You know, sort of like almost the third year of a snack.

1290. I think that as Christians, we shouldn't be snarky.

1291. I think we should be like salt.

1292. Salt is rubbed into a hole and it's stint.

1293. And so, like our sisters and others, look at this.

1294. I think we're allowed for our wives to tell that person that what you're doing and what's going on.

  1295. It's not a right.

1296. It's not in accordance with God's will.

1297. And therefore, that way, we become salt.

  1298. And it may sting.

1299. It may not be well received, but we're told to be salt.

  1300. We have taste.

1301. We have a certain character.

  1302. That's different.

  1303. Yeah.

1304. Yeah, that saltiness does call us to be distinct.

1305. Because if we were, it's kind of like both of these things.

1306. Like, if these things were already in existence, if they were already in the world,

1307. then why would Christ be calling his disciples to embody these things and to be these things

1308. if they were already there?

  1309. Jeff?

1310. Do you, what do you say when a person can be very moderate and say,

1311. I just turn on my light when I'm at work and to turn it on when I go home again?

1312. Do you think that that's, that there's a problem with that scripturally, even with the salt?

1313. Can salt choose when it's effective and choose when it's going to be just like sand?

1314. Or what do you think about that?

  1315. I wouldn't say that there's much of a choice there.

1316. When he calls them these things, he calls it, he does it in a way that makes it definite,

1317. a definite thing, like all the time, 24-7, 365.

1318. Like, like you'll always be salt and light.

1319. Though we may not always feel that way, we're called to be that.

  1320. One more?

  1321. What?

  1322. Do you have?

  1323. Okay.

  1324. Okay.

1325. How would you connect your passage to the attitudes?

1326. I can see you connecting to the entire world,

1327. and it's like all, and it's just a stress that's connected just to be can,

  1328. plus every university.

  1329. What are your thoughts?

  1330. What was that again?

1331. How would you connect your passage to the attitudes?

  1332. Come back and forth.

1333. I would say that they're connected in the way that all these things embody who we are.

1334. They connect in that way.

1335. So just as we're peacemakers, just as we're meat, just as we're poor in spirit, we are salt and we are light.

1336. These things are what we're supposed to represent and what we're supposed to be.

  1337. So.

1338. Got to dig way back in the vaults for that one.

1339. Oh, he wanted to know when I said like I was making my own explanation, explanations and doing all those things before I came to Christ, came to Christ.

1340. And how those things are kind of fleshing those things, fleshing out in my life now.

1341. I would say that I really, really didn't have a belief in anything or any God.

1342. I mean, I grew up in going to church in the South, just as everybody else in the South does.

1343. It's kind of expected of you.

1344. But it wasn't much that I paid attention to or learned from.

1345. But, yeah, I would say probably my senior year of high school into my freshman year of college is just kind of getting all of this knowledge, learning all these new things.

1346. And trying to think through those things logically and nothing really sticking, nothing really making sense until hearing the gospel and learning what it did for me.

1347. Does that kind of answer your question?

  1348. Oh.

  1349. Great.

1350. Let me give just a couple quick announcements before and try to give us the benediction.

1351. If you're both on the way in, there's more on the chair back there.

1352. If you could get one.

  1353. Thank you.
