  1. Tonight we're looking at Matthew chapter 7 verses 13 through 20.

    Matthew 7:13–20

  2. I think it'll be up, it may be up on the screen, but it is on page 812 if you're looking in one of the pew Bibles.

  3. We're looking at Jesus' Sermon on the Mount this summer.

  4. We are wrapping it up over the next couple weeks. It's starting to come to its conclusion.

  5. And this is really the beginning of the conclusion of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

  6. What we're looking at tonight.

  7. And then next week we'll look at the rest of the conclusion.

  8. And then the following week we'll finish by looking at the reaction of the crowds.

  9. So, Luke, sorry, Matthew. Matthew chapter 7, starting at verse 13.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  10. These are Jesus' words to his disciples and to the crowds.

  11. Enter by the narrow gate.

  12. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction.

  13. And those who enter by it are many.

  14. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life.

  15. And those who find it are few.

  16. Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing.

  17. But inwardly are ravenous wolves.

  18. You will recognize them by their fruits.

  19. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?

  20. So, every healthy tree bears good fruit.

  21. But the diseased tree bears bad fruit.

  22. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit.

  23. Nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

  24. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

  25. Thus, you will recognize them by their fruits.

  26. A long time ago, the poet wrote,

  27. Two roads diverged here in a wood.

  28. I took the one less traveled by.

  29. And it has made all the difference.

  30. Many times in life, you come to a crossroads.

  31. And there are only two ways to go.

  32. You can propose.

  33. Or you can break up.

  34. You can take the job offer.

  35. Or you can reject it.

  36. You can sign on the dotted line and buy the car.

  37. Or you can pass on the offer.

  38. You can choose to pack up and move.

  39. Or you can choose to stay here in New Haven.

  40. And you can't do both.

  41. You can only do one or the other.

  42. Now, many of us do all that we can to avoid these kinds of either-or decisions.

  43. My generation, some people call us the millennials, whatever you want to call us,

  44. were notorious for postponing commitment.

  45. Wanting to keep all our options perpetually open.

  46. At least wanting to keep the door open to future course corrections

  47. if we decide we want to change and move a different way.

  48. Not get locked into something that we can't get out of.

  49. Now, in some areas of life, there can be good reasons for this.

  50. And the technology available to us today allows us to consider some options

  51. that were just simply not possible 50 or 100 years ago.

  52. Like chatting on Skype or calling into work from halfway across the country.

  53. But in the passage we're looking at tonight,

  54. Jesus challenges our avoidance of commitment.

  55. He says, spiritually speaking, no one is truly neutral.

  56. No one is just uncommitted.

  57. You can't have it both ways at once.

  58. Jesus says there are ultimately two ways to live.

  59. You can live in the kingdom of Jesus,

  60. as he's described it in the Sermon on the Mount.

  61. Or you can live in the kingdoms of this fallen world.

  62. And you can't be loyal to both kingdoms at the same time.

  63. You know, in the ancient world, there was no such thing as dual citizenship.

  64. Because if you were loyal to one kingdom,

  65. that meant you could not be

  66. completely loyal to another kingdom at the same time.

  67. And if you wanted to become a citizen of a new kingdom,

  68. you had to leave behind your old citizenship.

  69. Jesus gives several contrasts in this passage.

  70. The narrow gate that few people enter versus the wide gate that many enter.

  71. The easy way that leads to destruction versus the hard way that leads to life.

  72. The healthy tree that bears good fruit versus the diseased or sick tree that bears bad fruit.

  73. The false prophet, a wolf in sheep's clothing versus the true prophet,

  74. a sheep who follows the good shepherd.

  75. And all of these are either or contrasts.

  76. Now, as we've seen this summer, if you've been coming here,

  77. the Sermon on the Mount is a description of life in Jesus' kingdom of grace.

  78. Jesus came into this world to call out a people,

  79. to belong to God,

  80. and to form them into a kingdom

  81. unlike anything that this world has ever seen or known.

  82. And the Sermon on the Mount describes what life looks like

  83. when Jesus has called us and brought us into God's kingdom

  84. by his grace,

  85. by his mercy,

  86. by his love that has drawn us in.

  87. And the Sermon on the Mount describes

  88. the life that we're meant to live.

  89. It's a life characterized by humility.

  90. Jesus starts by saying,

  91. blessed are the poor in spirit.

  92. It's the first thing he says.

  93. The people who recognize that we have nothing before God,

  94. that we're desperately needy,

  95. and that only God in his mercy

  96. can save us and rescue us.

  97. It's a life characterized by humility.

  98. It's a life characterized by being different from the world,

  99. being salt and light

  100. in the midst of a decaying and corrupt world.

  101. And Jesus says,

  102. probably the world will misunderstand you

  103. and dislike you

  104. and maybe even persecute you.

  105. But Jesus says,

  106. even when that happens,

  107. you are called to love your enemies

  108. and do good to those who hate you.

  109. Because that's the kind of behavior

  110. that reflects my kingdom.

  111. So it's a life characterized by humility,

  112. by distinctiveness from the world,

  113. by intimate trust in God the Father.

  114. We see this especially in chapter 6 of Matthew,

  115. the middle of the Sermon on the Mount.

  116. And it's, as we saw last week,

  117. a life characterized by careful discernment,

  118. but not self-righteous judgment.

  119. Now, many people have responded

  120. to the Sermon on the Mount

  121. by admiring the ethical ideal

  122. that is presented here.

  123. You know, many people,

  124. even people throughout the world,

  125. not simply Christians,

  126. but many other people have said,

  127. the Sermon on the Mount

  128. is the most beautiful piece

  129. of ethical teaching ever.

  130. Gandhi greatly admired it

  131. and was deeply moved by it.

  132. But Jesus said,

  133. you know,

  134. the response I'm looking for

  135. is not just to admire

  136. my teaching from a distance,

  137. sort of like looking

  138. at a beautiful sunset.

  139. You say,

  140. wow, isn't that nice?

  141. And you sort of sit

  142. and bask in it

  143. and enjoy it for a little while.

  144. And then you go on with your life

  145. and you feel a little more peaceful.

  146. Right?

  147. But Jesus says,

  148. no,

  149. I'm not calling you

  150. to admire it from a distance.

  151. I'm calling you to enter in

  152. and to become a citizen of my kingdom

  153. and leave behind your former loyalties

  154. and become loyal to me

  155. above everything else.

  156. And in the conclusion

  157. of the Sermon on the Mount,

  158. which we're starting to look at tonight,

  159. Jesus presses the point home.

  160. He insists on a decision,

  161. a response.

  162. He says,

  163. I'm not just giving this to you

  164. to be like a beautiful sunset

  165. that you can look at

  166. and walk away

  167. and feel a little more peaceful

  168. and then sort of goes away

  169. after a couple days.

  170. But I'm calling you

  171. to a whole new life,

  172. a whole new kingdom.

  173. So he says two things tonight.

  174. First, he says,

  175. enter by the narrow gate.

  176. Verse 13 and 14.

  177. If you go to New York City

  178. and you want to ride in the subway,

  179. you have to enter through a turnstile

  180. at almost every station.

  181. And only one person at a time can fit.

  182. Right?

  183. And I don't know if you've ever tried to,

  184. once I was in New York

  185. and I was coming back

  186. from flying somewhere else

  187. and I had a big suitcase.

  188. And I was trying to get this suitcase

  189. through the turnstile

  190. of the New York City subway

  191. and it got caught.

  192. It was trouble.

  193. I had to figure out

  194. how to maneuver it around.

  195. But the point is,

  196. you can only go one at a time

  197. through the gate

  198. into the subway.

  199. It's the same thing

  200. if you go to a Yankees game.

  201. I'm even using a Yankees example.

  202. I'm a Red Sox fan,

  203. but I'll give you

  204. the Yankees example, okay?

  205. Even if you go to Yankee Stadium,

  206. you can't just blend into the crowd

  207. and sort of slide in.

  208. You have to hand in your ticket

  209. to the guard,

  210. the ticket person, right?

  211. Whatever you call them.

  212. I don't know what you call them.

  213. Anyway, it's the same thing

  214. you go on a plane, right?

  215. You've got to go through security.

  216. And there's lots of things

  217. that they will not let you bring

  218. through security.

  219. Jesus says,

  220. the way to enter the kingdom of God

  221. is through a narrow gate.

  222. You can't enter anonymously.

  223. You can't just slide in

  224. as part of the crowd

  225. and have nobody see you.

  226. You can't just sort of slip in

  227. and be hidden

  228. and just make it in

  229. somehow like that.

  230. Jesus says,

  231. you don't get in automatically.

  232. You don't get in by walking

  233. into a church building.

  234. You don't get in by being born

  235. into a Christian family.

  236. You enter through personally

  237. trusting in Jesus.

  238. Jesus is the gatekeeper.

  239. He's the gate, actually.

  240. You enter by going through Him.

  241. It's the only way in.

  242. You enter by realizing that one day

  243. every one of us will face God's judgment.

  244. And what we need more than anything else

  245. is to be right with God.

  246. And the way that that can happen

  247. is by trusting Jesus

  248. and by accepting what He's done.

  249. And when you enter the kingdom of God

  250. by trusting Jesus,

  251. you must leave some other things behind.

  252. They won't fit with you

  253. into the kingdom of God.

  254. They don't belong in the kingdom of God.

  255. Jesus talks about some of these things.

  256. He says,

  257. entering the narrow gate

  258. means leaving behind

  259. other people's opinions

  260. and our attachments

  261. to what other people think of us.

  262. It means leaving behind

  263. our attachment to worldly possessions.

  264. Jesus talked to a rich young man

  265. later in the Gospels.

  266. And Jesus said,

  267. there's one thing that you're missing.

  268. Sell what you have

  269. and follow me.

  270. And the man walked away very sad.

  271. And we never hear of him again.

  272. Because he was more attached

  273. to his possessions

  274. than to Jesus.

  275. This week I was talking with someone

  276. from Eritrea,

  277. which is a country in eastern Africa.

  278. And he's someone who's considering

  279. becoming a follower of Jesus Christ

  280. and identifying himself as a Christian.

  281. And he said,

  282. I know Christians

  283. back in my country

  284. who were physically tortured.

  285. They were put in metal storage containers

  286. in the middle of the desert

  287. when it was 100 degrees.

  288. He knows that becoming a Christian

  289. is a very serious matter,

  290. even a dangerous matter.

  291. He knows that it's not something

  292. to be taken lightly,

  293. to identify himself

  294. as a follower of Christ.

  295. You know, sometimes I think

  296. in the United States

  297. or in parts of the world

  298. where Christians aren't going through

  299. intense physical persecution,

  300. we can forget this.

  301. But Jesus reminds us

  302. his way is a hard way.

  303. Whether that means

  304. facing physical persecution

  305. from an oppressive government,

  306. or whether it means

  307. living in the midst

  308. of worldly wealth and privilege

  309. and not becoming entangled

  310. and drawn into it,

  311. or living as salt and light

  312. in a nominally Christian culture

  313. where lots of people

  314. are talking the talk,

  315. but not many people

  316. are walking the walk.

  317. Jesus said,

  318. whatever situation

  319. you find yourself in,

  320. following me

  321. is a hard way.

  322. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  323. put it this way,

  324. referring to other things

  325. Jesus has taught

  326. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  327. He says,

  328. to testify to the truth

  329. as it is in Jesus,

  330. and at the same time

  331. to love the enemies

  332. of that truth

  333. with the infinite love

  334. of Jesus Christ

  335. is indeed a narrow way.

  336. To believe the promise

  337. of Jesus

  338. that his followers

  339. will inherit the earth

  340. and at the same time

  341. preferring to be wronged

  342. than to do wrong ourselves

  343. is indeed a narrow way.

  344. Or to see the weakness

  345. and the wrong

  346. in other people

  347. and at the same time

  348. to refrain

  349. from judging them

  350. and writing them off

  351. is indeed a narrow way.

  352. The way is unutterably hard

  353. and at every moment

  354. we are in danger

  355. of straying from it.

  356. As we've studied

  357. the Sermon on the Mount

  358. this summer,

  359. I've been struck

  360. by how challenging

  361. Jesus' demands are.

  362. It's hard

  363. what he calls us to.

  364. It's extremely hard.

  365. And Jesus doesn't

  366. try to hide that fact.

  367. You know,

  368. sometimes my tendency

  369. is to sort of downplay that

  370. and to emphasize

  371. encouraging,

  372. kind,

  373. nice,

  374. soft things.

  375. And Jesus says,

  376. no, actually,

  377. it's important

  378. that you know

  379. that the way

  380. I am calling you

  381. to walk

  382. is a hard way.

  383. But he also says

  384. it's a way

  385. that is worth it.

  386. He says

  387. it's a way

  388. that leads

  389. to life.

  390. To eternal life.

  391. And he says

  392. the other way

  393. it leads

  394. to destruction.

  395. So Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  396. goes on to say this.

  397. He says

  398. if we

  399. walking the narrow way,

  400. if we behold

  401. Jesus Christ,

  402. if we look

  403. to Jesus Christ

  404. going on before us

  405. step by step,

  406. we will not

  407. go astray.

  408. He says

  409. if we worry

  410. about all the dangers

  411. that beset us,

  412. if we gaze

  413. at the road

  414. instead of

  415. at him

  416. who goes before,

  417. we are already

  418. straying from the path.

  419. For Jesus

  420. is himself

  421. the way.

  422. He and he alone

  423. is our journey's end.

  424. And when we know that,

  425. we are able

  426. to proceed

  427. along the narrow way,

  428. through the gate

  429. of the cross

  430. and on to eternal life.

  431. He's saying

  432. the way is hard.

  433. But Jesus Christ

  434. has gone before us.

  435. And Jesus has walked

  436. this hard way.

  437. And he walked it

  438. all the way

  439. to the cross.

  440. He lived a life

  441. of faithful trust

  442. and obedience to God

  443. all the way

  444. to the end.

  445. He walked a harder way.

  446. He blazed

  447. the trail

  448. where there was

  449. no trail before.

  450. And all that we do

  451. is walk behind him.

  452. And Bonhoeffer says

  453. just look to him.

  454. Because he's the way.

  455. And he's

  456. eternal life.

  457. He's the destination

  458. that we're going for.

  459. And the one

  460. that makes it all worth it.

  461. So that's the first thing

  462. Jesus says.

  463. Enter by the narrow gate.

  464. Second thing,

  465. he says beware

  466. of false prophets.

  467. Verse 15 through 20.

  468. Now the basic problem

  469. with false prophets

  470. false teachers

  471. or false leaders

  472. is that they don't

  473. tell you about

  474. the narrow gate

  475. and they don't walk

  476. in the hard way.

  477. Jesus says

  478. they come in sheep's clothing.

  479. In other words,

  480. they appear

  481. and claim to be

  482. Christian teachers

  483. following Jesus,

  484. the good shepherd.

  485. But in reality,

  486. he says,

  487. on the inside,

  488. they're ravenous wolves.

  489. They're not serving Christ

  490. and advancing his kingdom,

  491. but ultimately,

  492. they're serving

  493. their own interests

  494. and building

  495. a different kingdom.

  496. And Jesus says,

  497. be careful.

  498. False prophets

  499. are dangerous

  500. because they're deceptive.

  501. So he says,

  502. first,

  503. they don't tell you

  504. about the narrow gate.

  505. The Old Testament

  506. talks quite a bit

  507. about false prophets,

  508. especially if you read

  509. the book of Jeremiah.

  510. Jeremiah was dealing

  511. with a lot of false prophets

  512. in his day.

  513. And in his day,

  514. the people of Jerusalem

  515. had walked away from God.

  516. They were committed to idols.

  517. They were perpetuating injustice

  518. in their society.

  519. They were disobeying God's commands.

  520. And the false prophets

  521. in that day basically said,

  522. everything's just going

  523. to be all right.

  524. Don't worry.

  525. Peace, peace.

  526. Nothing bad will happen to you.

  527. God will protect you.

  528. And Jeremiah said,

  529. that's a false comfort.

  530. The false prophets

  531. are saying,

  532. peace, peace.

  533. But there isn't any peace.

  534. They're trying to sweep reality

  535. under the rug.

  536. He says, look,

  537. you're following idols.

  538. You're mistreating each other.

  539. You're oppressing the poor.

  540. You're disobeying God's commands.

  541. You're ignoring his word.

  542. It's not okay.

  543. Everything's not going to be okay for you.

  544. And all those nice sounding words

  545. won't help you

  546. when God's judgment

  547. comes to visit you one day.

  548. And they'll disappear really fast.

  549. And it happened.

  550. People were taken away

  551. into exile in Babylon.

  552. Their city was conquered

  553. and destroyed.

  554. And then after they were taken

  555. to Babylon,

  556. there were some more false prophets.

  557. And those other false prophets said,

  558. oh, you know what?

  559. This isn't going to last very long.

  560. God's going to bring you home soon.

  561. He's going to fix it all

  562. and life will be easy for you again

  563. and you can go home.

  564. And Jeremiah said,

  565. oh no,

  566. that's not what God's doing here.

  567. You're going to be here for 70 years.

  568. It's going to be a long time.

  569. It's going to be a long road

  570. because God has a lot to teach you.

  571. But God also has good plans for you

  572. even while you're in exile.

  573. You see,

  574. the problem with false prophets

  575. is not just that they sometimes

  576. tell things that are outright lies.

  577. It's that they don't tell the whole truth.

  578. A false prophet might only talk about

  579. God's love

  580. and never about God's holiness

  581. or God's righteous judgment.

  582. Or they might be always comforting

  583. and reassuring.

  584. But always vague

  585. and never clear about anything.

  586. But by never mentioning

  587. some parts of God's truth,

  588. they distort the whole picture.

  589. They give false comforts

  590. and false hopes

  591. that aren't rooted in God's character

  592. and God's will.

  593. And the New Testament

  594. is also full of warnings

  595. against false prophets.

  596. Paul said in Acts 20,

  597. he said,

  598. after I leave,

  599. there will be fierce wolves

  600. who will come in among you,

  601. not sparing the flock.

  602. People will arise

  603. speaking twisted things

  604. to draw away the disciples after them.

  605. He says,

  606. therefore,

  607. be alert.

  608. Beware.

  609. Don't be deceived.

  610. False prophets

  611. don't tell you

  612. about the narrow gate.

  613. They say,

  614. you can go on

  615. doing whatever you want to do

  616. and everything will be all right.

  617. And Jesus says,

  618. beware

  619. because that teaching

  620. will only harm you

  621. in the end.

  622. Second,

  623. Jesus says,

  624. these false prophets

  625. don't walk the hard way.

  626. He says twice,

  627. verse 16 and verse 20,

  628. he says,

  629. you'll recognize them

  630. by their fruits.

  631. You might say,

  632. what does that mean?

  633. What are the fruits

  634. that we should look for?

  635. Well,

  636. there are three,

  637. at least.

  638. First,

  639. character.

  640. Galatians chapter 5

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  641. talks about

  642. the fruit of the Spirit.

  643. Love,

  644. joy,

  645. peace,

  646. patience,

  647. kindness,

  648. goodness,

  649. faithfulness,

  650. gentleness,

  651. self-control.

  652. That's the character

  653. of Jesus Christ himself.

  654. And it's the mark

  655. of a true believer

  656. and a faithful

  657. Christian teacher.

  658. Jesus says,

  659. false prophets

  660. might look good

  661. on the outside,

  662. but on the inside,

  663. they're divisive,

  664. they're angry

  665. and bitter,

  666. they're selfish.

  667. They might show

  668. favoritism,

  669. they might abuse

  670. the message of forgiveness

  671. into license.

  672. They might

  673. make themselves

  674. the center

  675. instead of making

  676. Jesus the center.

  677. So,

  678. their character

  679. is the first aspect.

  680. Second,

  681. their words.

  682. Jesus says,

  683. every healthy tree

  684. bears good fruit,

  685. every,

  686. the diseased tree

  687. bears bad fruit.

  688. And later on

  689. in Matthew chapter 12,

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  690. Jesus uses the same image

  691. of a tree and its fruit

  692. to talk about our heart

  693. and our words.

  694. He said,

  695. out of the abundance

  696. of the heart,

  697. the mouth speaks.

  698. And so,

  699. a part of how we

  700. can tell,

  701. a part of how we can

  702. beware

  703. of false prophets

  704. is by listening

  705. carefully

  706. to people's words.

  707. Looking at their character,

  708. listening to their words.

  709. Do their words

  710. line up with what

  711. Jesus says

  712. or not?

  713. One of the marks

  714. of a faithful teacher

  715. is their words

  716. align with the words

  717. of Jesus.

  718. So,

  719. character,

  720. words,

  721. and third influence.

  722. Paul said in

  723. 2 Timothy,

  724. he says,

  725. false teaching

  726. eats its way

  727. like gangrene,

  728. like an infection.

  729. He says,

  730. it promotes ungodliness,

  731. it causes bitter divisions,

  732. and upsets people's faith.

  733. But true doctrine

  734. is healthy teaching.

  735. It produces godliness,

  736. it promotes unity,

  737. and it strengthens

  738. the faith of God's people.

  739. In Acts,

  740. it says,

  741. many times

  742. the word of the Lord

  743. grew and multiplied.

  744. It spread out,

  745. and it went deep

  746. and bore fruit

  747. for God's glory.

  748. So,

  749. character,

  750. teaching,

  751. influence.

  752. Those are three fruits

  753. that we can look at,

  754. three aspects

  755. of the fruit

  756. that Jesus is talking

  757. about here.

  758. So,

  759. let me

  760. conclude by saying,

  761. how do we apply

  762. this teaching?

  763. First,

  764. Jesus is saying,

  765. be discerning.

  766. There are some

  767. preachers and teachers

  768. on TV,

  769. on the internet,

  770. in churches,

  771. writing popular books,

  772. who don't measure

  773. up to these standards

  774. in their character,

  775. in their words,

  776. and in their influence.

  777. And Jesus says,

  778. be careful.

  779. They can be deceptive

  780. because they have

  781. good appearances.

  782. They might be

  783. a wonderful public speaker.

  784. They might

  785. have an attractive

  786. personality.

  787. They might be

  788. handsome or beautiful.

  789. But Jesus says,

  790. look at their character,

  791. look at their words,

  792. look at their influence,

  793. be discerning.

  794. Don't immediately

  795. attach yourself

  796. to someone

  797. who claims

  798. to be

  799. a Christian teacher

  800. without

  801. looking carefully

  802. at those things.

  803. Jesus says,

  804. don't be naive.

  805. You can't assume

  806. that just because

  807. somebody says,

  808. I'm a Christian

  809. and I love Jesus,

  810. that they're

  811. a true follower

  812. of Christ.

  813. He says,

  814. be careful.

  815. Second,

  816. be patient.

  817. The danger

  818. here,

  819. for some of us

  820. at least,

  821. is that you may

  822. be tempted

  823. to respond

  824. to this passage

  825. by becoming

  826. extremely suspicious

  827. and excessively

  828. critical

  829. of everyone,

  830. probably everyone

  831. except yourself.

  832. And you're

  833. always looking

  834. for a reason

  835. to decide

  836. that someone

  837. is a false teacher

  838. or a fake Christian

  839. and write them off.

  840. Do you

  841. find

  842. a question

  843. O Snoop

  844. with

  845. her

  846. help

  847. her

  848. and

  849. she

  850. will

  851. get

  852. her
