  1. Well, tonight we're looking at the letters of the Philippians, chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  2. If you want to turn in a Bible, you can feel free to do that.

  3. It'll also be up on the screen if you're looking in one of the Pew Bibles, page 981,

  4. Philippians chapter 2, beginning at verse 12.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  5. As we go through this passage tonight, if you have questions, you can save them in your

  6. mind or jot them down because we'll have a time, as we usually do at the end of our evening

  7. service, for you to ask any questions that come to your mind about the sermon passage tonight.

  8. Tonight we're looking at Philippians chapter 2, verses 12 through 18, as we continue through

    Philippians 2:12–18

  9. this letter of Paul to his dear friends.

  10. So let's read together.

  11. Philippians chapter 2, beginning at verse 12.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  12. Paul says this,

  13. Well, if you do any driving around the New Haven area, one of the most striking changes

  14. that is going on right now is the construction of the new Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, also

  15. known as the Q Bridge.

  16. It's where Route 95 crosses the Quinnipiac River.

  17. The bridge is the centerpiece of a massive construction project, which includes widening

  18. Route 95 for 13 miles in each total in two directions and redesigning the intersection of Route 95 and

  19. Route 91.

  20. Now, even if you don't drive, let me say this to you.

  21. This is a project that has needed to happen for a long time.

  22. The old Q Bridge was constructed 60 years ago, almost.

  23. It was designed for 90,000 vehicles a day.

  24. Now it has to deal with 150,000 vehicles crossing it each day.

  25. The intersection between 95 and 91 has been ranked at times one of the 10 worst bottlenecks in the entire country,

  26. causing numerous accidents, traffic delays, and frustrations.

  27. But while this project has been needed, it has not always been easy.

  28. It started back in 1989, 25 years ago.

  29. The Connecticut Department of Transportation initiated a study because they realized that

  30. the bridge and the highway would need a major overhaul.

  31. It took 12 years and over 100 alternative proposals being considered and rejected until in 2001 a plan was finally approved.

  32. The cost was estimated at $800 million.

  33. Well, preparations began for construction in 2001, but then the New Haven City government

  34. and the Connecticut Department of Transportation couldn't agree on what to do with two historic buildings

  35. that stood in the path of the new bridge.

  36. Well, they figured that one out, finally put the project out to bid, and for six months, nobody bid on it.

  37. Because construction companies didn't like the structure of the project and how it was put out to bid.

  38. So then they had to redesign it and cut it up into different pieces.

  39. Now the total cost is estimated to be over $2 billion, more than twice the original estimate.

  40. Now, despite all these complications, when the project will be finally finished next fall,

  41. hopefully, it will be pretty amazing, I think.

  42. The new bridge will accommodate five lanes of traffic in each direction.

  43. Thirteen miles of Route 95 from Brantford to West Haven, a big bottleneck, a big traffic problem,

  44. will be significantly widened.

  45. And the whole downtown New Haven intersection and exits and on-ramps will be totally redesigned.

  46. Instead of a rickety, overcrowded, rusty bridge that as you drive over it, you wonder,

  47. will it just start falling into the river as I'm driving over it?

  48. The new bridge will be elegant, solid, and enduring.

  49. According to some architects, it's one of the first bridges of its kind in the United States.

  50. It's called an extra-dose bridge.

  51. You can go on Wikipedia and find out what that means.

  52. It will be the centerpiece of the highway restoration project,

  53. facilitating traffic going from north to south and east to west.

  54. Now, even now, though the project...

  55. So, some of you are...

  56. I don't know, maybe some of you are...

  57. You live on campus and you never get more than three blocks off,

  58. and you haven't even seen this bridge.

  59. I guess I'll just have to admit this taps into my childhood fantasy of being a civil engineer,

  60. which I've never totally lost.

  61. And fascination with civil engineering.

  62. But, anyway, someday you can see it.

  63. So, though the project is still unfinished, you can get a glimpse of how amazing it will be.

  64. If you're going on 95 North, you take the 34 ramp to New Haven,

  65. you get this really neat view of the whole New Haven skyline as you come into the downtown,

  66. which you never had before.

  67. Or if you go to the top of East Rock,

  68. the new bridge now stands out as a thing of beauty,

  69. spanning the water.

  70. Or if you look from below at the orange-red steel girders that hold up the bridge,

  71. you can see their strength and enduring nature.

  72. Now, tonight in Philippians 2,

  73. the Apostle Paul gives a vision of the church

  74. as God's new construction project,

  75. as a thing of beauty,

  76. shining in the midst of darkness,

  77. as a solid pathway

  78. in a crooked and twisted world.

  79. So, tonight I want to look at three questions

  80. that our passage answers.

  81. First, why is God's church

  82. desperately needed?

  83. Second,

  84. if it's needed,

  85. why is it so hard

  86. to build?

  87. And third,

  88. why is it worth it,

  89. after all?

  90. So, first,

  91. why is God's church

  92. desperately needed?

  93. Well, the answer Paul gives

  94. is that the church

  95. is the visible demonstration

  96. of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  97. Now, last week we looked at

  98. verses 5 through 11,

  99. and if you have a Bible open,

  100. look up at those verses.

  101. There may be the most important verses

  102. in this whole book of Philippians,

  103. because they summarize

  104. the gospel message.

  105. In other words,

  106. the basic, central,

  107. Christian message

  108. from which everything else flows out.

  109. It says in verse 6,

  110. Christ Jesus,

  111. though he was in the form of God,

  112. did not count equality with God

  113. as a thing to be grasped,

  114. but emptied himself.

  115. In other words,

  116. Jesus Christ,

  117. the eternal Son of God,

  118. humbled himself

  119. and became a human being.

  120. He entered into this world.

  121. And then verse 8 goes on to say,

  122. he didn't just enter into this world,

  123. he humbled himself

  124. to the point of dying on a cross.

  125. He poured himself out

  126. in obedience to God

  127. and in sacrificial love

  128. for flawed and sinful people like us.

  129. And then,

  130. God looked upon what Jesus had done

  131. and said,

  132. that is true humility.

  133. That is faithful obedience.

  134. That is sacrificial love

  135. more than anyone else

  136. has ever demonstrated

  137. or would ever demonstrate.

  138. That is a sacrifice

  139. perfect

  140. and sufficient to cover every sin,

  141. even the worst.

  142. And that is faithful,

  143. complete obedience to God

  144. worthy of the highest praise.

  145. And so verses 9 through 11

  146. says that God raised Jesus

  147. from death to life

  148. and he exalted Jesus

  149. as the Lord over all.

  150. And one day,

  151. this Jesus who died on the cross

  152. and rose again

  153. will rule over everything

  154. and all creation

  155. will acknowledge

  156. his rightful rule.

  157. Every knee will bow

  158. and every tongue confess.

  159. That's the basic,

  160. that's the heart

  161. of the Christian message.

  162. Now maybe you've heard it before,

  163. but let me ask you,

  164. it raises a question.

  165. Have you bowed your knee

  166. before Jesus?

  167. Have you acknowledged him

  168. as the rightful Lord

  169. over everything,

  170. including you?

  171. A few years ago,

  172. a friend of mine

  173. became a Christian in college

  174. and he was talking

  175. with his dad about faith

  176. and his dad was in the military

  177. and his dad wasn't very religious.

  178. And his dad said,

  179. what's the deal

  180. with all this Christian stuff?

  181. I mean,

  182. what are you saying

  183. I need to do

  184. to become a Christian?

  185. I mean,

  186. I've heard people talk about

  187. accepting Jesus into your heart.

  188. I just don't get

  189. what that means.

  190. His son said,

  191. Dad,

  192. let me put it this way.

  193. If you want to become

  194. a Christian,

  195. you need to swear

  196. allegiance to Jesus.

  197. In other words,

  198. bow your knee before him

  199. and confess that he is Lord.

  200. And it made sense.

  201. Maybe that's what

  202. you need to do tonight

  203. to acknowledge Jesus

  204. as the rightful Lord

  205. and the Savior.

  206. You know,

  207. the wonderful promise

  208. in the Bible

  209. is that anyone who does

  210. swear allegiance to Jesus

  211. as Lord and Savior

  212. is forgiven of their sins

  213. and filled with the Holy Spirit

  214. and called to be a part

  215. of God's mission

  216. to restore and renew

  217. the world

  218. under Jesus' Lordship.

  219. In other words,

  220. through the good news,

  221. through what Jesus has done,

  222. we're called into

  223. God's new construction project.

  224. The centerpiece of his plan

  225. to restore and renew the world.

  226. If you want to carry

  227. the analogy on,

  228. God the Father

  229. is the architect

  230. who in his eternal wisdom

  231. has laid out

  232. the perfect plan.

  233. Jesus Christ

  234. is the federal,

  235. state,

  236. and local governments

  237. all combined

  238. in one person

  239. who is the one

  240. supreme authority

  241. but also

  242. the one who's paid

  243. the entire cost

  244. through his faithful obedience,

  245. through his death

  246. and resurrection.

  247. And we

  248. are the construction workers

  249. who have the great privilege

  250. and responsibility

  251. of being part of God's plan

  252. to restore and renew

  253. the world

  254. under the Lordship

  255. of Jesus.

  256. It's a high

  257. and holy calling.

  258. That's what the church

  259. is meant to be,

  260. the visible demonstration

  261. of what Jesus has done

  262. in his death

  263. and resurrection.

  264. A people who

  265. proclaim this message

  266. and are defined

  267. by this message

  268. and go into the world

  269. with this message

  270. and a people

  271. whose lives

  272. are gradually

  273. being shaped

  274. and transformed

  275. and changed

  276. by this message

  277. of Jesus

  278. who humbled himself

  279. to the point of death

  280. and was raised

  281. to life

  282. as Savior

  283. and Lord.

  284. So that's why

  285. the church is necessary

  286. because it's a visible

  287. demonstration

  288. of the gospel

  289. of Jesus Christ.

  290. That's why Paul says

  291. in verse 12,

  292. therefore,

  293. at the beginning

  294. of this section,

  295. everything comes back

  296. to this gospel

  297. of Jesus

  298. that shapes

  299. what we do.

  300. So that's why

  301. the church is necessary.

  302. It's a visible demonstration

  303. of the gospel.

  304. But second,

  305. if building the church

  306. is necessary

  307. and it's what God

  308. has always intended to do,

  309. why is it so hard?

  310. Maybe you can relate to this.

  311. Maybe you've been

  312. part of churches

  313. that have had

  314. lots of struggles.

  315. Maybe you stopped

  316. going to church

  317. for a while

  318. because you got fed up

  319. with it.

  320. Or you felt like

  321. maybe it's not worth it.

  322. Why is building

  323. the church so hard?

  324. Well, Paul acknowledges

  325. that's hard.

  326. In verse 12,

  327. he says,

  328. work out your salvation

  329. with fear and trembling.

  330. Now, notice,

  331. he doesn't say

  332. work for your salvation.

  333. That's not possible.

  334. Salvation is a gift

  335. from God

  336. by grace alone.

  337. But he does say

  338. work out

  339. or live out

  340. the salvation

  341. that you have

  342. in Jesus

  343. with fear and trembling,

  344. with reverent awe

  345. and godly fear.

  346. In other words,

  347. living out the gospel

  348. or working out

  349. the implications

  350. of your salvation

  351. is not an easy task.

  352. If you've ever worked

  353. on designing

  354. a skyscraper

  355. or constructing a bridge

  356. or even just

  357. building a house

  358. or even just

  359. repairing a room,

  360. it's a complicated project

  361. with all kinds

  362. of potential pitfalls.

  363. Sometimes lives

  364. are at stake.

  365. It's a challenge.

  366. And Paul acknowledges

  367. that living out

  368. the gospel

  369. is not easy.

  370. And he points

  371. to two particular

  372. challenges

  373. that we face

  374. in building

  375. God's church.

  376. First of all,

  377. in verse 14,

  378. he says,

  379. do all things

  380. without grumbling

  381. or disputing.

  382. You know,

  383. that's been

  384. one of the most

  385. difficult parts

  386. of this whole bridge

  387. project that has

  388. caused years of delays

  389. is that the state

  390. government,

  391. the local government,

  392. the construction company

  393. just haven't been able

  394. to agree sometimes.

  395. It's taken a long time.

  396. And one of the biggest

  397. challenges

  398. that we face

  399. in the church

  400. is the same thing.

  401. Grumbling

  402. and disputing.

  403. It's the pitfall

  404. that the people

  405. of Israel

  406. fell into

  407. when they walked

  408. through the desert

  409. after God

  410. had saved them

  411. out of Egypt

  412. in the Old Testament.

  413. And it's the same

  414. words that are used

  415. in the Old Testament.

  416. They were grumbling

  417. or complaining

  418. against Moses

  419. and disputing

  420. or accusing

  421. God

  422. of not caring

  423. about them

  424. and wanting

  425. to accuse

  426. God of

  427. doing them wrong.

  428. And Paul says

  429. don't fall into

  430. the same trap

  431. that they did.

  432. And sometimes

  433. we need to hear

  434. this reminder

  435. sometimes over

  436. and over.

  437. Sometimes I've even

  438. quoted this verse

  439. to my kids.

  440. But you know

  441. I imagine

  442. I'll have to

  443. either quote it

  444. or convey

  445. the same idea

  446. over and over

  447. and over again.

  448. And you know what?

  449. I need to hear

  450. this verse

  451. over and over

  452. and over again.

  453. Just yesterday

  454. I failed.

  455. I did the exact

  456. opposite

  457. with my wife.

  458. I was a

  459. contentious

  460. complainer.

  461. Back in chapter 2

  462. verses 1 through 4

  463. Paul calls us

  464. to humility.

  465. He says

  466. preferring one another

  467. above ourselves.

  468. Seeking not only

  469. our own interests

  470. but also those

  471. of others.

  472. You know

  473. this can be

  474. I mean

  475. it's very

  476. simple.

  477. There's no

  478. theological debate

  479. about what this

  480. verse means.

  481. Do everything

  482. without arguing

  483. or disputing

  484. or however

  485. it translates it.

  486. Grumbling or disputing.

  487. It's very simple

  488. but it's hard

  489. to put into practice.

  490. And that's why

  491. Paul returns

  492. to this theme

  493. so often

  494. and reminds us

  495. of what Christ

  496. did in humbling

  497. himself

  498. and sacrificing

  499. himself

  500. for us

  501. and saying

  502. that very

  503. same mind

  504. that was in

  505. Christ Jesus

  506. let that be

  507. in you

  508. by the power

  509. of the Holy Spirit.

  510. So that's the

  511. first challenge

  512. we face

  513. is

  514. disunity

  515. grumbling

  516. and disputing.

  517. The second

  518. challenge we face

  519. is transitions.

  520. Now for the

  521. church in Philippi

  522. Paul had been

  523. the major leader

  524. who had begun

  525. the process

  526. of building

  527. the church

  528. and in one sense

  529. for a time

  530. it might have

  531. seemed like

  532. Paul was the

  533. one who was

  534. holding this

  535. together.

  536. He was sort of

  537. like the head

  538. of the construction

  539. firm that got

  540. the project

  541. going.

  542. But in this

  543. passage Paul

  544. reminds them

  545. in a couple

  546. places

  547. I won't be

  548. around forever.

  549. In verse 12

  550. he says

  551. not only as in

  552. my presence

  553. but much more

  554. in my absence.

  555. He refers to

  556. him being

  557. absent from

  558. them.

  559. And in 17

  560. and 18

  561. he actually

  562. talks about

  563. the possibility

  564. of his own

  565. death.

  566. In fact

  567. it's the

  568. inevitability

  569. it's only a

  570. question of

  571. when not

  572. if.

  573. Paul says

  574. I'm not

  575. going to be

  576. here with

  577. you forever.

  578. I'm not

  579. going to hold

  580. you guys

  581. together.

  582. But whether

  583. or not I'm

  584. here the

  585. calling of

  586. God on

  587. your life

  588. hasn't

  589. changed.

  590. that's why

  591. he says

  592. work out

  593. your own

  594. salvation.

  595. It's not

  596. me

  597. who's going

  598. to hold

  599. everything

  600. together.

  601. I was

  602. given

  603. authority

  604. from God

  605. to care

  606. for you

  607. and oversee

  608. you but I'm

  609. not the

  610. ultimate

  611. overseer of

  612. this project.

  613. I'm not

  614. going to

  615. carry this

  616. work from

  617. beginning to

  618. end.

  619. Only God

  620. is.

  621. You know

  622. sometimes this

  623. can be hard

  624. if there's a

  625. leader that you

  626. respect or a

  627. Christian mentor

  628. or a friend

  629. that you look

  630. up to who's

  631. invested in

  632. you and for

  633. whatever reason

  634. they move

  635. on or maybe

  636. they pass

  637. away or

  638. maybe you

  639. have to move

  640. somewhere else

  641. and they're not

  642. part of your

  643. life anymore.

  644. And maybe you

  645. come to a new

  646. church and you

  647. haven't as hard

  648. to feel as hard

  649. to connect with

  650. people and you

  651. feel like I

  652. don't know if

  653. it's going to be

  654. what it was.

  655. And Paul

  656. encourages them

  657. I'm not the

  658. one who

  659. started this

  660. project.

  661. God is the

  662. one who

  663. started this

  664. project and

  665. God is the

  666. one who's

  667. going to

  668. carry it to

  669. the finish.

  670. It's hard

  671. to build

  672. the church

  673. of God.

  674. We have to

  675. face the

  676. challenge of

  677. the temptation

  678. to disunity

  679. and we have to

  680. face the

  681. challenge of

  682. transition.

  683. But Paul

  684. says in the

  685. end, Paul

  686. says it's all

  687. worth it.

  688. It's

  689. necessary, it's

  690. hard, but in

  691. the end, it's

  692. worth it.

  693. Verse 13, he

  694. says it is God

  695. who works in

  696. you, both to

  697. will and to

  698. work for his

  699. good pleasure.

  700. God the

  701. Father made the

  702. plan from

  703. eternity past.

  704. Jesus Christ

  705. paid the cost

  706. and we are the

  707. workers, but

  708. that's not it.

  709. God the

  710. Holy Spirit

  711. dwells in

  712. us and

  713. empowers us

  714. to get the

  715. job done.

  716. And when

  717. Jesus left

  718. and went

  719. back to

  720. heaven, he

  721. didn't just

  722. leave it up

  723. to us.

  724. He didn't

  725. just say,

  726. over to

  727. you, you

  728. all can

  729. figure it

  730. out.

  731. He sent

  732. the Holy

  733. Spirit to

  734. be another

  735. comforter,

  736. another helper,

  737. just like Jesus

  738. had been with

  739. his own

  740. disciples,

  741. carrying them

  742. through,

  743. watching over

  744. them, reminding

  745. them of the

  746. truth.

  747. And he sent

  748. the Holy

  749. Spirit into

  750. our lives to

  751. do just

  752. that.

  753. Philippians

    Philippians 1:6

  754. 1, verse 6

  755. says, he who

  756. began a good

  757. work in you

  758. and among you

  759. will bring it

  760. to completion

  761. at the day of

  762. Jesus Christ.

  763. What God has

  764. started, he's

  765. going to finish.

  766. And even

  767. if it's in a

  768. work in

  769. progress now,

  770. God's not

  771. going to let

  772. it go.

  773. And that's a

  774. word of

  775. encouragement to

  776. us, that what

  777. God has started

  778. in your life,

  779. by bringing

  780. you to Jesus,

  781. by drawing you

  782. near to Jesus,

  783. he's going to

  784. continue and

  785. carry on.

  786. And he's

  787. faithful to

  788. his promise.

  789. You know,

  790. just like Paul,

  791. we live in a

  792. crooked and

  793. twisted generation.

  794. We live in a

  795. city that's

  796. divided by

  797. mistrust between

  798. people of

  799. different races

  800. and different

  801. political ideas

  802. and different

  803. education levels.

  804. We live in a

  805. society that

  806. increasingly lacks

  807. a foundation for

  808. clear moral

  809. guidance.

  810. We live in a

  811. world that's

  812. broken and

  813. messed up.

  814. And in the

  815. midst of this

  816. world, God has

  817. called us to be a

  818. people who shine

  819. as lights in

  820. the world.

  821. That word can be

  822. translated like

  823. stars in the

  824. sky.

  825. You know, do you

  826. remember long

  827. ago when God

  828. talked to Abraham

  829. and he brought

  830. him outside on a

  831. clear night and

  832. he said, look up

  833. at the sky and

  834. see if you can

  835. count the stars.

  836. And that's how

  837. many children,

  838. descendants,

  839. offspring, that's

  840. how many children

  841. I'm going to make

  842. out of you.

  843. That's how big

  844. your family is

  845. going to grow.

  846. And he wasn't

  847. just talking about

  848. Abraham's physical

  849. descendants, right?

  850. Because Abraham's

  851. descendant was

  852. Jesus Christ.

  853. And Jesus Christ

  854. says, anyone who

  855. believes in me

  856. becomes a child of

  857. God, a part of

  858. God's family.

  859. And so Paul's

  860. saying, this is

  861. what God's doing

  862. in the church.

  863. As he's fulfilling

  864. the promise to

  865. Abraham, a people

  866. likes the stars in

  867. the sky.

  868. But you know, also

  869. in the ancient

  870. world, we don't

  871. think of it as much

  872. today, because we

  873. have GPSs and all

  874. kinds of other

  875. navigational tools,

  876. but if you were a

  877. sailor and you were

  878. lost at sea, you

  879. look up at the

  880. stars, and the stars

  881. show you where to

  882. go.

  883. Because the stars

  884. don't change,

  885. they're low, well

  886. the stars, I

  887. understand there's

  888. orbits and all that

  889. stuff, but basically

  890. the stars stay put.

  891. They don't switch

  892. their formation

  893. around.

  894. They reliably point

  895. you in the right

  896. direction.

  897. And Paul's saying

  898. that's what the

  899. church is called to

  900. be, a people who

  901. stand firm, and who

  902. can light the way, and

  903. who can show the way

  904. to a world that's

  905. lost, and who can

  906. point the way back

  907. to God through

  908. Jesus Christ.

  909. We're called to be

  910. God's new

  911. construction project,

  912. a living demonstration

  913. of the gospel, a

  914. living demonstration

  915. in the present of

  916. what God's glorious

  917. kingdom will look like

  918. in the future.

  919. A thing of beauty

  920. shining in a dark

  921. world, and a solid

  922. pathway.

  923. That's God's vision

  924. for his church.

  925. Now I know, we're

  926. still a work in

  927. progress.

  928. If you were around

  929. here ten years ago,

  930. do you remember what

  931. the new Q

  932. Bridge looked like?

  933. It looked like a few

  934. big mounds of dirt

  935. that they were, for

  936. some reason, they

  937. started by making

  938. these big huge

  939. mounds of dirt in

  940. the middle of Route

  941. 34 and some other

  942. highways.

  943. And you look at them

  944. and you're like, what

  945. in the world is going

  946. on?

  947. There's these big

  948. piles of dirt.

  949. But actually now,

  950. that's where the new

  951. exit ramps are going

  952. on.

  953. Right?

  954. Or even if you

  955. remember five years

  956. ago, you know,

  957. it's a long process

  958. to get this

  959. construction work

  960. done.

  961. And you know, as a

  962. church, we're a work

  963. in progress.

  964. We're not the finished

  965. product.

  966. Okay?

  967. If you're hoping for a

  968. perfect church, we're

  969. not it.

  970. And you know what?

  971. If we were perfect, you

  972. would spoil it anyway.

  973. But we are a church

  974. that's a work in

  975. progress.

  976. For the glory of God.

  977. I want to end by

  978. sharing a story about

  979. God's work in this

  980. particular church.

  981. I shared it this

  982. morning, so if you're

  983. here this morning, you

  984. hear it twice.

  985. But it fits with this

  986. passage tonight.

  987. And I hope it encourages

  988. you as we conclude.

  989. So 15 years ago this

  990. fall, Trinity Baptist

  991. Church had 20 members

  992. and no pastors and no

  993. building to meet in.

  994. We're renting a space.

  995. The church has existed

  996. since the 70s, but it

  997. had gone through a

  998. split in the mid-90s

  999. and it had barely

  1000. survived.

  1001. And so the members

  1002. thought, you know

  1003. what?

  1004. We've tried to make

  1005. this work.

1006. We've given it what we

  1007. can, but maybe it's

  1008. just time to close

  1009. down.

1010. And so they called a

  1011. meeting.

  1012. The church council

  1013. called a meeting to

  1014. discuss how to

  1015. gracefully close the

  1016. doors.

  1017. Well, at 1030 that

  1018. morning, October 12 of

1019. 1999, the wife of the

  1020. chairman of the church

1021. council got a phone call

  1022. from her neighbor.

  1023. Said, are you guys

  1024. still looking for a

  1025. pastor?

  1026. She said, well, I

  1027. guess so.

  1028. He said, well, we

  1029. interviewed this

  1030. candidate at our

  1031. church and he wasn't

1032. quite the right fit for

  1033. our church, but we

  1034. think he's a great

  1035. candidate and we think

  1036. that you should

  1037. consider calling,

  1038. inviting him to be

  1039. your pastor.

  1040. Well, the church

  1041. council decided to

  1042. change their agenda

  1043. that evening from

  1044. deciding how to close

  1045. down to deciding how

1046. to call a new pastor

  1047. and get him over

  1048. here from the UK,

  1049. from another country.

  1050. Right?

  1051. And most of the

  1052. church members had

  1053. never met him in

  1054. person.

  1055. Well, we'll probably

  1056. never call a pastor

1057. in quite the same way

  1058. again.

  1059. But that was the

  1060. first step in what's

1061. in an amazing work of

  1062. God, to restore and

  1063. renew this church so

1064. that we can hold fast

1065. to the word of life

1066. and hold out the word

1067. of life to the city

  1068. of New Haven.

  1069. You know, God has

  1070. been faithful to us

1071. in the past and he's

  1072. begun a good work

  1073. among us and he

  1074. promises to continue

  1075. that work.

  1076. So brothers and

  1077. sisters, let us work

  1078. out our salvation with

  1079. fear and trembling,

1080. knowing that it is God

1081. who works in and among

  1082. us.

  1083. Let's pray.

1084. Lord, we thank you for

  1085. this glorious calling

  1086. that you've set before

1087. us to be lights in the

1088. world, to be like stars

1089. in the sky, pointing the

1090. way to life, holding fast

  1091. to your word.

  1092. Lord, you know the

  1093. challenges that we face,

  1094. you know the challenges

1095. that each of us face.

1096. Lord, you know the ways

  1097. that we can become

  1098. discouraged.

1099. We pray that you would

  1100. encourage us by the

  1101. power of your Holy

  1102. Spirit.

  1103. Lord, that you have

  1104. called us into fellowship

1105. with each other and with

1106. you and you're going to

  1107. continue the good work

  1108. that you've begun and

  1109. bring it to completion.

  1110. Give us that great

  1111. assurance and Lord, may

  1112. that strengthen us to

  1113. walk faithfully with you

  1114. each day.

  1115. In Christ's name we

  1116. pray.

  1117. Amen.

  1118. Amen.

  1119. Amen.

  1120. Amen.

  1121. Amen.

  1122. Amen.

  1123. Amen.

  1124. Amen.

  1125. Amen.

  1126. Amen.
