  1. it's uh wonderful to see the lehman family up here and to see them testify to god's grace

  2. in their lives um we're going to talk a lot about families today uh i don't know about you

  3. but uh i grew up uh in a family that didn't really have family reunions closest thing was my

  4. grandfather's 90th birthday uh but um so we didn't have that sort of culture and i don't know if you've

  5. had that culture or not but i want you to imagine with me for a minute the worst family reunion ever

  6. imagine a gathering of a family where two brothers won't speak to each other because one slept with

  7. the other's wife imagine a bitter grandma masking the sadness of the loss of relationship with her

  8. daughters in bitterness endlessly attacking with criticism and out being outspoken about their

  9. failures as daughters imagine uncle joe nursing his second six-pack in the corner wondering why his

  10. family has never engaged him about his depression attempted suicide let alone his drinking habits

  11. and to top it off at the end of the time a father and son have a fist fight in the front yard about

  12. who's going to pay for the damage for the car that got wrecked last weekend that would be a pretty

  13. unpleasant family reunion wouldn't it it would speak to a fractured and broken family wouldn't it walking

  14. on eggshells hiding dark secrets full of grief and regret but you know this may be not far off for some

  15. of you from what your family may actually be like and we wouldn't be surprised would we by that for as we

  16. look at the bible and as we look at the first family as we look at adam and eve and their sin their rebellion

  17. against god as that rippled out into their family what do we see strife envy murder bloodshed

  18. brokenness fragmentation over and over again there's a concept in the bible in the old testament it's a

  19. word you've heard a lot of shalom shalom means peace and flourishing and well-being and togetherness

  20. in the garden of eden shalom was shattered

  21. and today we're going to start to look at god's work of shalom in genesis chapter 43 you can turn

    Genesis 43 chapter mention

  22. there in your bible and uh page 36 as we go ahead and the reason why we're looking at this is because

  23. jacob's family if you remember your history of the old testament uh the promise to abraham abraham and his

  24. son isaac the son of the promise was jacob and we're looking at jacob's family and jacob's family

  25. is as bad if not worse than that worst family reunion that i told you about before he rose he he uh was

  26. raised in a family full of jealousy deception and favoritism he managed to repeat that quite effectively

  27. uh he had two wives he loved one and hated the other uh he had 12 sons he loved two and hated the

  28. others uh his marriages were full of strife and sadness uh his children kept coming from the wrong

  29. women that he was sleeping with and he was increasingly frustrated by that and by the end you see that not

  30. only that but his three oldest sons have gone off and create committed egregious sins against him and

  31. against the family to such an extent that they have lost their place as a firstborn reuben simeon levi

  32. have all been dispossessed from their favored role as firstborn and as we started this series if you've been

  33. here for a while you remember in chapter 37 greg described it one big hot mess of a family

  34. a family torn apart by envy by lies by cruelty as joseph's brothers joseph the favored one was sold

  35. into slavery and sent away by his brothers because of their envy and jealousy because of their father's

  36. favoritism for this beloved son and they go back and they lie to their brother to their father and say

  37. jacob is dead here's his bloody robe and jacob is filled with grief and we think what can god do

  38. what can god do in this mess what is god going to do in the face of such fragmentation

  39. where shalom is completely gone from this family

  40. maybe you feel like that in your life too maybe it is your family relationships that make you think

  41. what can god do to repair what is so shattered maybe you feel like it in your life what can god do to fix

  42. the brokenness the brokenness in my heart and in my life we ask god what are you up to where are you what are you doing

  43. god is at work and that's what we're going to look at this morning god is at work restoring

  44. shalom restoring broken shattered lives

  45. in his people forever how does god do this we're going to look at genesis 43 and 44 this morning let

  46. me pray and then we're going to dive in and we'll look at it together god we ask for your help this

  47. morning as we look at this passage we pray for your spirit to awaken our minds and stir our hearts

  48. so that we would understand your truth god we pray you would help us today to understand your word

  49. and as we understand your word will we see the greatness of your grace to us

  50. lord your power to restore and to fix to repair that which is broken for your glory and for our good

  51. we pray in jesus name amen i'm not going to read genesis 43 and 44 we'd be here till 11 30 just reading

  52. the passage so i'm going to read parts of it and we're going to summarize and i'm going to bring you

  53. along in the story um but if you remember uh uh well as we look at over these two chapters there are

  54. three movements of how god is at work doing this restoring work in his family's life three things that

  55. he does he removes idols he overcomes fear and thirdly he repudiates envy in the hearts of the family

  56. so this is what we're going to look at verses 1 through 15 he removes idols let's look at it this

  57. is actually probably worth reading so we're going to read verses 1 through 15 to set the context

  58. uh so you can look with me as we read this now the famine was severe in the land and when they had

  59. eaten the grain that they had brought from egypt the brother said to them go again buy us a little

  60. food but judah said to him the man solemnly warned us saying you shall not see my face unless your

  61. brother is with you if you send if you will send your brother with our brother with us we will go

  62. down and buy you food but if you will not send him we will not go down for the man said to us we you

  63. shall not see my face unless your brother is with you israel said why do you treat me so badly

  64. as to tell the men that you had another brother and they replied the man questioned us carefully

  65. about ourselves and our kindred saying is your father still alive do you have another brother

  66. what we told him is was an answer to those questions could we have in any way known that

  67. he would say bring your brother down and judah said to israel his father send the boy with me and

  68. we will rise and go that we may live and not die both we and you and are also our little ones

  69. i will be a pledge of his safety from my hand you shall require him if i do not bring him back to you

  70. and set him before you then let me bear the blame forever if we had not delayed we would now have

  71. returned twice then their father israel said to them if it must be so then do this take some of

  72. the choice fruits and the land in your bags and carry a present down to the man a little bomb a little

  73. honey gum myrrh pistachio nuts and almonds take double the money with you carry back with you the

  74. money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks perhaps it was an oversight take also your brother

  75. and arise and go to the man may god almighty grant you mercy before this man and may he send back

  76. your other brother and benjamin and as for me if i'm bereaved of my children i am bereaved

  77. so this is the opening section this is the opening moon if you remember what it is is jacob's family up in

  78. up in israel up in palestine canaan at this point are suffering a famine and the only place in the

  79. world to get grain is egypt so they've already gone down to egypt once and encountered their brother

  80. joseph but they didn't notice him joseph treated them severely initially and then mercifully blessed

  81. them not only with all the food that they could want but repaying their money back by putting it back

  82. in the sacks but he kept simeon uh one of the brothers as a uh as a down payment as a deposit as

  83. a bond so to speak and said you must come back with your brother benjamin and so uh this is where we

  84. start the famine has continued we see it in this scene that there are two pressures going on and

  85. they're in conflict because one of the pressures is the famine they're out of food they have nothing more

  86. to eat what are they going to do there's only one place to go but then there are these conditions

  87. to go back requires them to bring back benjamin and it's the very thing that jacob will not do

  88. because jacob loved rachel not leah and he had 12 sons but only two came from rachel and one was joseph

  89. and he's gone benjamin is the only one left and over and over and over again jacob's favoritism

  90. is shown in this idolatry of loving his one son of his one wife that he would probably call his true

  91. wife and everyone else is just along for the ride he has loved his one wife and therefore his two

  92. their those sons more than anything

  93. and in this scene god is prying jacob's hands off of that idol he brings along judah judah now steps

  94. into the forefront in chapter 42 he was not even mentioned but now he steps into the forefront god

  95. has moved in judah if you remember there's a whole work he did in chapter 38 god is now moving in judah

  96. to be the spokesman to lead the family of jacob in a new direction and he pleads with jacob please

  97. let him go please if you don't let him go we will die we have no food you and we and our little ones

  98. will all die but if we go if we take benjamin with us if you let go of your desperate desire

  99. to try to keep this favored son if you will release your hand from this idol

  100. then we will go and i promise you i'll bring him back i promise you that i will do it

  101. notice that even judah or notice that even as jacob agrees to this even as jacob says all right let's do

  102. it his plans change the first time when he sent them down he said go get grain this time he says

  103. okay if you're going to get grain and you're taking benjamin well here's how we're going to do it here's

  104. the strategy you got to take all this stuff to make sure that you're going to bless them and and make

  105. sure that you have favor with this guy and and oh by the way make sure you take tons of money repay the

  106. money that that was in your bag that that joseph had put back into their sacks take that plus enough

  107. money to buy the new grain so that there's no question about your your intentions you're not

  108. wanting to steal your status do everything you can to position this so that this is going to succeed

  109. so that you may bring back your other brother whatever his name is i don't remember him and

  110. benjamin my beloved one and that's that's what god is doing here god is prying jacob's hands off of this

  111. beloved son i don't even think at the end the blessing is a faith-filled joyful one but even

  112. there you see jacob turn back to god may god almighty meaning may the god of the covenants

  113. the god who made the covenant to abraham and isaac may that god have mercy on you

  114. he is at least resigned to god's plan even though he says yeah maybe if i'm bereaved i'm bereaved you

  115. can just see him old jewish man sitting there being sad uh well but think about it by letting him go

  116. he is letting go all of his family he now has when these guys go out to egypt he has no sons he is alone

  117. in canaan and so let us not be too hard on him but let us recognize how hard it must have been for

  118. him to release all of his sons to do this

  119. not only did he have to let go of all of his sons but he had to let go of all of his control

  120. he had to let go of all of his schemes to save his family

  121. he was driven by the providence of god and by the working of joseph which is also a hand of the

  122. providence of god he's driven by these things to have to take this step of faith this step of

  123. letting go of the idols and it's essential because it's the only way that god can do the work of

  124. actually restoring the shalom of the family he needs to get god is working to get all of the

  125. family together in one place so that shalom can be restored and benjamin's favoritism and his

  126. separation from his other brothers is the barrier to god accomplishing that purpose and so he has to go

  127. friends i wonder if there are things that you cling to in your life

  128. things that like suitcases of gold that you would clutch to even as the ship is sinking around you

  129. the opinion of others the love of a particular person your comfort your plans

  130. maybe it's sin patterns that you return to for comfort over and over and over again

  131. idols that have captured our hearts such that we grasp them so tightly

  132. that only great moves of god's providence and even compulsion can pry our hands off of them

  133. friends what's the one thing that if god said i want you to let go of this

  134. would you want to run and hide instead of willingly saying lord i give to you

  135. do you see that those things that capture our hearts like that

  136. end up becoming then these magnetic centers that warp our relationships with one another

  137. because we're unable to love fully and how these things harden our hearts towards god a loving god

  138. who knows our needs before we ask them

  139. friends just like jacob god is at work in our lives he wants to pry our fingers off of those idols

  140. so that he might do restoring work in our life

  141. so that's the first movement that's what he does in chapter in verses 1 through 14 and then verse 15

  142. is really fun it's kind of like if you've ever been to a theater show it's like when the curtain comes

  143. down and two characters walk across the stage in front there's a scene change going on behind

  144. that's what that's what verse 15 is it's just a reminder that and then they all went the men took

  145. they went all went down and suddenly at the end the curtain comes back and for the first time in

  146. five chapters all of jacob's brothers are in the same place in egypt and in the second one what you

  147. see is that god overcomes the fear that joseph's brothers have as they enter into this they come down

  148. jacob or joseph is looking from afar he sees benjamin with them he tells his servant go out

  149. welcome these men invite them to our house for dinner now remember when joseph's brothers left

  150. he put the money that they had paid for the grain back in their sacks and they got back and jacob

  151. looked at and said what you come back with all this money but not simeon did you do it again it looks

  152. shady it looks really shady and now they have to go back to the same person and ask for more grain

  153. and it looks like they've stolen the grain the first time around and so they are afraid they are

  154. sore afraid look with me verses 18 through 25 just so we can capture this story and the men were afraid

  155. because they were brought to joseph's house and they said it is because of the money which was

  156. replaced in our sacks the first time that we brought that we are brought in so that he may assault us and

  157. fall upon us make us servants and seize our donkeys

  158. you see their fear and they have every good reason to be afraid don't they they have every good reason

  159. to let go of it or to come in and think we could be done he could just kill us all he could put us all

  160. in prison what in the world is going to happen and remember they've already protested in chapter 42

  161. we're honest men so they're trying to protest their honesty they go to the steward they know joseph man

  162. i don't know what he's going to say we're going to try to get in with the steward first so they go to

  163. the steward and they try to explain what's happened and that's what they do in verses 19 through 24

  164. and do you see what happened they come in and say when we came in we we found our money in the sacks and

  165. we don't know where we don't know where it came from but we didn't put it there we didn't steal it we

  166. really didn't pay for it friends look at what god does in the mouth of a pagan egyptian in the mouth

  167. of someone who didn't know god at all look what he says in verse 23

  168. he said peace to you oh by the way that's shalom that's where it shows up the first time in the

  169. passage peace be to you do not be afraid your god and the god of your fathers has put treasure in your

  170. sacks for you i received my money he's saying there's no outstanding debt there's no bill we're not

  171. wondering where the money is that paid for your grain i got that god has provided for you god has

  172. lavished undeserved grace upon you you got all the grain you needed to live and the money to come back

  173. and do it again and all i know is that if i could read into what the servant is thinking all i know is

  174. that i've seen this dude joseph enough to know that god is up to something through him he has blessed

  175. our country he has saved our country and now he god has worked to save you god has lavished undeserved

  176. favor upon you and this is what god does and so then the servant takes them treats them like honored

  177. guests he washes their feet he washes their feet he washes their feet he washes their feet he washes their

  178. donkeys he invites them to a feast and brings them into this feast where joseph interacts with them

  179. about his family and you see the question is your father well is he in shalom is the idea

  180. and when he hears that it's all well he feasts them like honored guests

  181. he lavishes upon them

  182. he lavishes upon them

  183. riches wealth imagine they've been in a famine and suddenly they're at a feast

  184. friends

  185. this is god's restoring work and this is how he does it

  186. sometimes he pries our hands off of our idols but sometimes he just lavishes undeserved grace upon us

  187. it touches the brothers they make glad and marry and have a big party and celebrate

  188. it washes over joseph joseph joseph sees the first dream that he had back in chapter 37 fulfilled

  189. his 11 brothers are now bowing down before him

  190. simeon has been restored to the brothers he's no longer a bond

  191. and he's overcome with

  192. passion

  193. love

  194. for his brothers and he weeps he has to hide it

  195. because his long con isn't done yet

  196. friends i wonder for you how you respond when god

  197. lavishes grace upon you

  198. i wonder if your instinct to be afraid as you approach god is greater

  199. than he

  200. than his grace to you sometimes

  201. i wonder if you ever wonder whether his grace

  202. just seems too good to be true

  203. and it becomes instead for you a burden

  204. if god has been so good to me then i have to do everything i can

  205. to try to repay him

  206. for it

  207. our guilty conscience thinks

  208. i don't deserve this it can't be real

  209. our fallen hearts i think make us grace resistant

  210. and god lavishes

  211. his grace upon us

  212. his goodness his favor

  213. in everything from common grace of everyday blessings

  214. to miraculous healings and provisions

  215. to ultimately

  216. his son in salvation

  217. he lavishes grace on us over

  218. and over and over and over

  219. and over and over again

  220. to free our hearts from our fear

  221. he has made us to receive this gladly

  222. but we often

  223. we often struggle with it

  224. don't we

  225. sometimes we struggle with false guilt

  226. where we think there's no way god could ever love me

  227. sometimes we struggle with true guilt

  228. i've done things that are so bad

  229. is it possible that god could love me

  230. god wants to break us

  231. break us of our self-reliance

  232. and of our self-saving strategies

  233. by showing us grace upon grace upon grace

  234. and when we get to the end of chapter 43

  235. we think maybe this is the time

  236. joseph is going to step forward

  237. and take off his egyptian clothing

  238. and say brothers now we're together

  239. isn't this great we're having this great feast

  240. but god isn't done with his brothers

  241. and the shalom is not perfect yet

  242. god has more to do

  243. and that's what chapter 44 is all about

  244. chapter 44 is the one more step

  245. that god wants to do in their hearts

  246. to restore shalom to the family

  247. and you see it set up at the very end

  248. joseph when he sets them up for the feast

  249. which is great

  250. he sets he seats them in order of birth

  251. how could he know that

  252. they must have been a little freaked out by that

  253. like how did that happen

  254. and then

  255. benjamin

  256. gets five times what the other guys get

  257. in this feast

  258. and if you're one of his brothers

  259. overwhelmed with the goodness

  260. rejoicing this

  261. and then suddenly like

  262. wait a minute

  263. again

  264. are you kidding me

  265. we've lived with this

  266. our whole lives

  267. he's the favored one

  268. we get it

  269. but here

  270. this guy doesn't even know who he is

  271. how could this be

  272. you don't see that in the story

  273. but you might have wanted

  274. they might have

  275. they must have noticed

  276. the storyteller is very clear

  277. to make it

  278. exact

  279. and then

  280. having had a long party

  281. they fall asleep

  282. for a long time

  283. probably

  284. they might have even

  285. hung up

  286. woke up with a hangover

  287. the next day

  288. and

  289. in the meantime

  290. joseph now

  291. activates his last

  292. movement

  293. the last scene

  294. in the act of the long con

  295. that god is working

  296. in these chapters

  297. to try to bring restoration

  298. to this family

  299. he tells his servant

  300. restore

  301. their money

  302. fill their sacks

  303. as full as they could be

  304. and put a cup

  305. in the sack

  306. of the youngest one

  307. so he does this

  308. the brothers wake up

  309. the next morning

  310. they load up their donkeys

  311. they ride off

  312. back to their brother

  313. back to their father

  314. they have everything

  315. they want

  316. they're thinking

  317. hey this was a success

  318. we have Simeon

  319. we have Benjamin

  320. we have food

  321. this is great

  322. and then the servant

  323. comes out after him

  324. and says

  325. how can you treat

  326. this host

  327. with such disdain

  328. how can you be

  329. such a bad guest

  330. you stole

  331. his cup

  332. and they

  333. and they

  334. they think

  335. no no no

  336. you don't understand

  337. verse 8

  338. this cannot be

  339. we would not do this

  340. we came back

  341. we were ready

  342. to pay back money

  343. we are not

  344. going to be

  345. we are not

  346. dishonest men

  347. don't think about

  348. as a matter of fact

  349. we are so sure

  350. of our innocence

  351. that if you find

  352. the guy who stole

  353. the cup

  354. kill him

  355. and that begins

  356. this fascinating

  357. back and forth

  358. about the consequences

  359. of the cup

  360. being found

  361. you see it

  362. in 9 and 10

  363. you see it again

  364. in 16 or 17

  365. the servant says

  366. oh no no no

  367. we don't need to

  368. kill anyone

  369. we just want

  370. the one who stole it

  371. we'll take him back

  372. and make him our servant

  373. because he's broken

  374. the rule

  375. right

  376. and so this then

  377. and so then

  378. again in birth order

  379. from the oldest

  380. to the youngest

  381. they take down

  382. their sacks

  383. they open them

  384. and as they go along

  385. the brothers must be saying

  386. see

  387. we haven't done anything

  388. and then they get

  389. to the end

  390. and Benjamin

  391. and there's the cup

  392. oh no

  393. and for the first time

  394. it seems

  395. the brothers

  396. stand in solidarity

  397. they mourn

  398. they tear their clothes

  399. they pack up their stuff

  400. and with Benjamin

  401. they go back to Egypt

  402. for the first time

  403. they've acted

  404. in solidarity

  405. and then they get

  406. back to Joseph

  407. and they recount

  408. the whole thing again

  409. and again we have

  410. this back and forth

  411. Judas says

  412. hey you know

  413. like we can all

  414. like if

  415. we are guilty

  416. they admit it

  417. in verse 16

  418. God has found out

  419. our guilt

  420. and we have no defense

  421. and it's probably

  422. not talking about

  423. the cup

  424. because they must

  425. still be confused

  426. about how the cup

  427. got in there

  428. it's probably

  429. about their guilt

  430. going all the way

  431. back to chapter 37

  432. God has now

  433. revealed

  434. their guilt

  435. so profoundly

  436. and to the very one

  437. whom they have hurt

  438. by their sin

  439. that they have

  440. confessed it

  441. and Joseph

  442. presses home

  443. how much

  444. have you actually

  445. repented

  446. of that sin

  447. that's what verse

  448. 17

  449. is about

  450. just leave

  451. the youngest

  452. one with me

  453. the favored

  454. one

  455. the one

  456. who has caused

  457. you so much

  458. grief

  459. the one

  460. your father

  461. loves

  462. the one

  463. who as Judah

  464. will say later

  465. is the one

  466. who's treated

  467. like the only

  468. real son

  469. and everyone

  470. else is

  471. illegitimate

  472. just leave him

  473. the rest of you

  474. go on back

  475. you can have

  476. all the money

  477. all the grain

  478. just go

  479. just give him

  480. to me

  481. Joseph has

  482. recreated

  483. the very

  484. scene

  485. of chapter 37

  486. to give them

  487. an opportunity

  488. to repent

  489. to repudiate

  490. their envy

  491. their jealousy

  492. their sin

  493. and rather

  494. than working

  495. to destroy

  496. and fragment

  497. their family

  498. to give them

  499. an opportunity

  500. to begin

  501. to act

  502. righteously

  503. in response

  504. to restore

  505. their family

  506. it might have

  507. been tempting

  508. for a moment

  509. for the brothers

  510. to think

  511. we could do

  512. this

  513. but Judah

  514. says no

  515. Judah rises up

  516. again as the

  517. spokesperson

  518. as the representative

  519. of all the

  520. brothers

  521. and he says

  522. no

  523. and he recounts

  524. in painstakingly

  525. Hebrew narrative

  526. detail

  527. over and over

  528. again

  529. what

  530. what the

  531. situation was

  532. and how

  533. for the love

  534. of his father

  535. who will be

  536. heartbroken

  537. if Benjamin

  538. does not return

  539. and for the love

  540. of his brother

  541. who they will

  542. not abandon

  543. like they

  544. abandoned

  545. Joseph

  546. so long

  547. ago

  548. he says

  549. no

  550. we will

  551. not

  552. do

  553. this

  554. and it

  555. comes to

  556. its climax

  557. in verse

  558. 30 through

  559. 34

  560. let's read

  561. those together

  562. now

  563. therefore

  564. as soon

  565. as I

  566. come

  567. to your

  568. servant

  569. my father

  570. and the

  571. boy

  572. is not

  573. with me

  574. with us

  575. then

  576. his life

  577. is bound

  578. up

  579. in the

  580. boy's

  581. life

  582. that is

  583. Jacob's

  584. life

  585. is bound

  586. up

  587. in the

  588. boy's

  589. life

  590. as soon

  591. as he

  592. sees

  593. that the

  594. boy

  595. is not

  596. with us

  597. he will

  598. die

  599. and your

  600. servants

  601. will bring

  602. down

  603. the gray

  604. hairs

  605. of your

  606. servant

  607. our father

  608. with sorrow

  609. to Sheol

  610. for your

  611. servant

  612. became

  613. now he's

  614. talking about

  615. himself

  616. for your

  617. servant

  618. became a

  619. pledge of

  620. safety

  621. for the

  622. boy

  623. to my

  624. father

  625. saying

  626. if I

  627. do not

  628. bring

  629. him

  630. back

  631. to you

  632. then I

  633. shall

  634. bear

  635. the

  636. blame

  637. before

  638. my

  639. father

  640. all

  641. my

  642. life

  643. now

  644. therefore

  645. please

  646. let your

  647. servant

  648. remain

  649. instead

  650. of the

  651. boy

  652. as a

  653. servant

  654. for my

  655. lord

  656. and let

  657. the boy

  658. go back

  659. with his

  660. brothers

  661. for how

  662. can I

  663. go back

  664. to my

  665. father

  666. if the

  667. boy is

  668. not with

  669. me

  670. I fear

  671. to see

  672. the evil

  673. that would

  674. find

  675. my

  676. father

  677. instead

  678. of abandoning

  679. the brother

  680. Judas

  681. says take

  682. me instead

  683. if justice

  684. must be done

  685. even though it

  686. doesn't feel

  687. like justice

  688. I will

  689. bear

  690. the unjust

  691. imprisonment

  692. for we

  693. didn't steal

  694. the cup

  695. but I

  696. will bear

  697. that injustice

  698. for the

  699. sake

  700. of this

  701. brother

  702. for the

  703. sake

  704. of love

  705. for my

  706. father

  707. I will

  708. give myself

  709. to restore

  710. my brother

  711. so that

  712. my family

  713. will have

  714. peace

  715. I cannot

  716. go back

  717. without

  718. Benjamin

  719. my father

  720. would die

  721. envy

  722. rivalry

  723. jealousy

  724. and hatred

  725. are replaced

  726. by self

  727. sacrificial

  728. love

  729. that which

  730. is broken

  731. is restored

  732. I wonder

  733. friends

  734. if you

  735. ever

  736. experience

  737. times

  738. when God

  739. has brought

  740. you back

  741. to the

  742. same

  743. thing

  744. again

  745. to the

  746. same

  747. trial

  748. or the

  749. same

  750. temptation

  751. and you

  752. wonder

  753. why am

  754. I doing

  755. this

  756. is God

  757. punishing

  758. me

  759. am I

  760. a failure

  761. maybe I

  762. can't

  763. maybe

  764. maybe I'll

  765. be stuck

  766. with this

  767. forever

  768. what I want

  769. you to see

  770. is that

  771. just like

  772. here

  773. God

  774. gives us

  775. opportunities

  776. sometimes

  777. to repeat

  778. the same

  779. circumstances

  780. again

  781. so that

  782. we can

  783. show

  784. our repentance

  785. so that

  786. we can

  787. turn from

  788. the sin

  789. that captured

  790. our hearts

  791. before

  792. and see

  793. his gracious

  794. work

  795. in our

  796. lives

  797. bearing

  798. fruit

  799. by living

  800. differently

  801. in those

  802. circumstances

  803. the

  804. restoration

  805. has

  806. begun

  807. love

  808. sacrificial

  809. love

  810. has

  811. replaced

  812. envy

  813. fear

  814. has

  815. been

  816. overcome

  817. by

  818. grace

  819. idolatry

  820. of the

  821. heart

  822. has been

  823. removed

  824. by

  825. sovereign

  826. acts

  827. of God

  828. now

  829. all

  830. the

  831. brothers

  832. eleven

  833. brothers

  834. are

  835. united

  836. in

  837. love

  838. and have

  839. given

  840. themselves

  841. in

  842. love

  843. for one

  844. another

  845. jacob's

  846. heart

  847. has been

  848. turned

  849. back

  850. towards

  851. the lord

  852. as his

  853. hands

  854. have been

  855. pried

  856. off

  857. the

  858. idol

  859. he's

  860. given

  861. up

  862. his

  863. own

  864. scheming

  865. and his

  866. protection

  867. self

  868. protection

  869. and his

  870. self

  871. provision

  872. and we

  873. see the

  874. arcs

  875. the story

  876. lines

  877. of

  878. this

  879. last

  880. section

  881. of

  882. Genesis

  883. beginning

  884. to come

  885. together

  886. chapter

  887. 37

  888. we saw

  889. that

  890. Jacob

  891. or

  892. that

  893. Jacob's

  894. sons

  895. Joseph

  896. and

  897. Judah

  898. were the

  899. two

  900. key

  901. people

  902. in

  903. this

  904. and now

  905. we see

  906. Judah

  907. restored

  908. his brothers

  909. restored

  910. Jacob

  911. turning a

  912. corner

  913. and the

  914. only one

  915. left to be

  916. restored now

  917. is Joseph

  918. you have to

  919. come back

  920. next week

  921. because that's

  922. what Greg's

  923. going to

  924. preach about

  925. is the

  926. restoration

  927. of

  928. Joseph

  929. as he

  930. makes himself

  931. known to

  932. his family

  933. but in the

  934. meantime

  935. we see that

  936. the restoration

  937. of the

  938. brothers

  939. and particularly

  940. Judah

  941. Judah

  942. who

  943. for the

  944. love

  945. of his

  946. father

  947. gave

  948. himself

  949. to

  950. redeem

  951. his

  952. brother

  953. and

  954. restore

  955. shalom

  956. to his

  957. family

  958. what a

  959. powerful

  960. story

  961. that is

  962. who

  963. points us

  964. ahead

  965. points us

  966. through

  967. chapter

  968. 49

  969. where the

  970. blessing

  971. of Jacob

  972. on Judah

  973. will be

  974. from your

  975. line

  976. will come

  977. the future

  978. king

  979. the scepter

  980. shall not

  981. depart

  982. from your

  983. mouth

  984. and further

  985. on as we

  986. get to the

  987. genealogies

  988. in the

  989. beginning

  990. of Matthew

  991. we see

  992. that through

  993. the line

  994. of Judah

  995. comes

  996. the ultimate

  997. brother

  998. who for

  999. the love

  1000. of his

  1001. father

  1002. gave himself

  1003. to bear

  1004. the unjust

  1005. punishment

  1006. upon himself

  1007. because he

  1008. did no wrong

  1009. in order to

  1010. redeem his

  1011. brothers

  1012. and sisters

  1013. and to

  1014. restore

  1015. his family

  1016. forever

  1017. this is what

  1018. Paul points

  1019. us to in

  1020. Ephesians 2

  1021. that we read

  1022. earlier

  1023. that in

  1024. Jesus Christ

  1025. God has

  1026. broken down

  1027. the wall

  1028. of hostility

  1029. caused by

  1030. our sin

  1031. that in

  1032. Jesus the

  1033. forgiveness

  1034. that is there

  1035. because of his

  1036. substitutionary

  1037. death for us

  1038. restores us

  1039. to a relationship

  1040. with God

  1041. but not only

  1042. that it

  1043. brings us

  1044. into a new

  1045. family and a

  1046. new household

  1047. and God

  1048. is building

  1049. the household

  1050. on the

  1051. foundation of

  1052. God's grace

  1053. so that we

  1054. might be his

  1055. family

  1056. forever

  1057. that's a

  1058. family reunion

  1059. worth looking

  1060. forward to

  1061. God so

  1062. gracious as to

  1063. rescue a family

  1064. as broken as

  1065. Jacob's is at

  1066. work to rescue

  1067. us from our

  1068. broken fragmented

  1069. lives from our

  1070. broken fragmented

  1071. families to bring

  1072. us to him and

  1073. into his family

  1074. what a love we

  1075. have what a

  1076. savior we have

  1077. let's pray

  1078. oh Lord we

  1079. worship you this

  1080. morning as a

  1081. God who has

  1082. pursued us that

  1083. we might know

  1084. peace with you

  1085. peace to those

  1086. who are far

  1087. off and peace

  1088. to those who

  1089. are near

  1090. peace to us

  1091. who knew

  1092. nothing of your

  1093. grace and yet

  1094. you have revealed

  1095. yourself

  1096. proclaimed yourself

  1097. drawn us to

  1098. yourself

  1099. turned our

  1100. hearts to you

  1101. given us faith

  1102. to believe and

  1103. carried us into

  1104. your family

  1105. God we

  1106. praise you for

  1107. that today

  1108. in Jesus

  1109. name

  1110. amen

  1111. as the

  1112. worship team

  1113. comes forward

  1114. we're going to

  1115. sing a great

  1116. hymn

  1117. a great hymn

  1118. about the

  1119. amazing grace

  1120. and mercy

  1121. that God

  1122. has shown

  1123. us in

  1124. Christ

  1125. and can

  1126. it be that

  1127. I should

  1128. gain an

  1129. interest in

  1130. my savior's

  1131. blood

  1132. died he

  1133. for me

  1134. who caused

  1135. his pain

  1136. for me

  1137. to him

  1138. who him

  1139. to death

  1140. pursued

  1141. amazing love

  1142. how can it

  1143. be

  1144. that thou

  1145. my God

  1146. should die

  1147. for me

  1148. please stand

  1149. as we sing

  1150. together

  1151. as we sing

  1152. together

  1153. all

  1154. plats

  1155. I

  1156. like

  1157. more

  1158. than

  1159. I

  1160. love

  1161. to

  1162. where

  1163. to

  1164. Über
