  1. A story from Genesis 37 to 50.

  2. Peter Jackson had to do that with the movies is because Tolkien had written this beautiful

  3. story with so many storylines and he was weaving them back together at the end of the book

  4. in such a way that you would have just left all these storylines hanging if he hadn't

  5. had seven endings in this movie.

  6. I feel a little bit like that about Genesis 50.

  7. Genesis 50, we're going to pick up storylines that the writer of Genesis has been weaving

  8. and sort of laying out throughout the book.

  9. And in fact, as we will see later, it points us even to the greater weaving work of God

  10. as he weaves together his work in this world.

  11. And so that's what we're going to be looking at this morning.

  12. And you know, one of the things we haven't talked about very much as we've thought about

  13. this Genesis series, but I want to point out is that as I understand it, the context of

  14. the writing of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, it was as Moses was leading

  15. the people to the brink of the promised land, as they were wandering through the wilderness

  16. for 40 years, as they were waiting and slowly approaching this promised land that God had

  17. said they would take.

  18. God, through Moses, was recording what he had done up to that point in the history of

  19. his people.

  20. Think about this for a minute.

  21. They're standing on the brink of entering into a land that is full of people, full of other

  22. tribes.

  23. They're entering into a land where they have never lived and they're going to claim it as

  24. their own.

  25. Perhaps they were filled with fear.

  26. Perhaps their minds were captured by this question.

  27. Will God be good to us as we go across the Jordan?

  28. I wonder if that's a question that we all ask.

  29. Different places, different times in our lives we ask, is God really going to be good to us?

  30. Why do we ask it?

  31. Well, it's not hard.

  32. Open the page on CNN and what will you see?

  33. Well, there's racism in Ferguson.

  34. There's Ebola devastating West Africa.

  35. There's civil wars in various countries around the world and so on and so forth.

  36. We live in a world where there's lots of suffering and pain.

  37. But my guess is that that's not the most powerful argument for most of you.

  38. Probably for most of you as it is for me as well.

  39. It's that our experience, our own personal story has moments of trial, moments of pain, moments

  40. of injustice, moments of tragedy and disappointment.

  41. And even if you have lived one of those blessed lives where you feel like, no, I haven't really seen that.

  42. Even then, I wonder if you live with an insecurity.

  43. How long will it last?

  44. Will it continue forever?

  45. You see, the challenge that we have is that our experience doesn't always seem to match with our theology.

  46. God says that He is good and we want to believe Him.

  47. But then we look at our world and we look at our own lives and we wonder.

  48. We wonder why it's so hard and where is God's goodness in all of that.

  49. And you know, without diving into the whole philosophy of it, I'll refer you to great books if you want after the service to delve into it.

  50. We can resolve it one way by denying that God's good.

  51. We can just say God's sovereign but He doesn't care very much.

  52. He doesn't care about the details of your life.

  53. We could resolve it by saying that God is good but not sovereign.

  54. He's like a great-grandfather who's going to hold your hand and say, I'm so sorry.

  55. But He can't do anything to help you.

  56. But this will not do.

  57. It is not what the Scriptures tell us.

  58. Jeremiah 29, 11,

  59. For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord.

  60. Plans for welfare.

  61. And not for evil.

  62. To give you a future and a hope.

  63. And Isaiah 46, 9 says,

  64. Remember the former things of old.

  65. I am God and there is no other.

  66. I am God and there is no one.

  67. There is none like me.

  68. Declaring the end from the beginning.

  69. And from ancient times.

  70. And from ancient times.

  71. Things not yet done.

  72. Saying, my counsel shall stand and I will accomplish my purpose.

  73. And so the Bible says that God has good plans.

  74. And He will accomplish His purposes.

  75. It's hard, isn't it?

  76. When your best friend in high school decides that you're now the target of her mockery.

  77. When you watch the self-destructive patterns of a loved one spiral down.

  78. When that thing you'd hoped for.

  79. A spouse, a job, an opportunity.

  80. Snatched out of your hands.

  81. And an untimely death rocks your family.

  82. As you are worn down by the wearying battle.

  83. Depression.

  84. Chronic pain.

  85. Slow, painful tearing apart of a marriage relationship.

  86. How is God good in these things?

  87. Will God be good to us?

  88. This is what our passage is about this morning.

  89. As we end the book of Genesis.

  90. We see God drawing together these strands of His story.

  91. To answer the question, will God be good?

  92. Will God be good to Joseph and his family?

  93. Will God be good to the people of Israel?

  94. Standing on the brink of the promised land.

  95. Will God be good to you and to me today?

  96. So, turn with me, if you will, to Genesis chapter 50.

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  97. The page number is in your bulletin.

  98. I'm sorry, I forgot to get it.

  99. Genesis 50.

  100. As you're turning there, we will see that in the first 14 verses of chapter 50,

  101. it's this record of Jacob being taken up into Egypt and being buried with a great train of Egyptian court officials and people.

  102. He's buried in the tomb of the Bible.

  103. He's buried in the tomb of his fathers.

  104. And it leads us to verse 15, chapter 15, which is where I'm going to read from.

  105. I'm going to read 15 through 21 as the simple text today.

  106. So, please read with me.

  107. When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said,

  108. It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.

  109. So, they sent a message to Joseph saying,

  110. Your father gave this command before he died.

  111. Say to Joseph,

  112. Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin because they did evil to you.

  113. And now, please forgive the transgressions of the servants of God, your father.

  114. The servants of the God of your father.

  115. Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

  116. His brothers also came and fell down before him and said,

  117. Behold, we are your servants.

  118. Joseph said to them,

  119. Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?

  120. As for you, you meant evil against me.

  121. But God meant it for good.

  122. To bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today.

  123. So, do not fear.

  124. I will provide for you and your little ones.

  125. Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

  126. Please pray with me.

  127. God, we thank you that you have not left us to strive to understand you in our own efforts.

  128. Lord, we thank you that it is not in our reasonable mind alone that, Lord, we know you.

  129. But God, it is that you have revealed yourself to us.

  130. You have shown us and told us what kind of a God you are.

  131. Lord, I pray this morning that we would be comforted.

  132. Comforted as we see you as you truly are.

  133. We pray in Jesus' name.

  134. Amen.

  135. Amen.

  136. In this central passage.

  137. It's quite a story, isn't it?

  138. If you haven't been here, remember?

  139. Joseph's brother sold him into slavery long ago in chapter 37.

  140. God was with Joseph sovereignly through great trials and sufferings.

  141. And miraculously and sovereignly brought them back together years later where Joseph was in a position to provide for and to care for his family.

  142. And in the middle of that, God worked not only provision for his family but also reconciliation.

  143. God brought them together and brought, in fact, Jacob, his father and his sons and all of their families down to Egypt to live.

  144. And at the end of the story, Jacob, the patriarch, dies.

  145. And now it is his 12 sons who are left.

  146. And 11 of them are afraid.

  147. They remember the evil that they did.

  148. And even though Joseph had spoken words of forgiveness and pardon, even though he had demonstrated through his actions to them, they don't believe it.

  149. Maybe now that Jacob's gone, maybe he'll finally take revenge on us.

  150. Maybe he'll finally mete out the punishment that we know that we deserve and never got.

  151. So they come up with a scheme.

  152. They make up a story.

  153. What Jacob probably didn't say.

  154. They make up a story about how his father asked them to tell Joseph to forgive them.

  155. Joseph sees through this ploy and he weeps.

  156. He weeps because his brothers still don't understand.

  157. He weeps because they don't get the God that he knows.

  158. And therefore the ways that he has acted towards them.

  159. They come and they fall down before them.

  160. They bow down again.

  161. Fulfilling the dream in chapter 37 that sparked the whole story.

  162. They say, we are your servants.

  163. Please don't kill us for what we did to you.

  164. Just make us your servants.

  165. Just make us your servants.

  166. That's enough.

  167. They beg to be his slaves rather than be executed.

  168. Joseph's reply is a complex one, isn't it?

  169. Joseph says, you did do evil to me.

  170. He remembers the suffering.

  171. He's not forgotten.

  172. He remembers the years of slavery in Potiphar's house.

  173. He remembers the time when he was unjustly accused and then sent to prison.

  174. He remembers when he was abandoned by the cupbearer.

  175. Spent more years.

  176. He's totaling probably close to 17 years as a slave in prison in Egypt.

  177. He remembers all of those things.

  178. And he does not sweep it under the rug or make it go away and say, ah, it's fine.

  179. He says, you did mean it for evil.

  180. He called it what it is.

  181. But then he says, am I in the place of God?

  182. I am not the one to be your judge and jury and executioner.

  183. That is God's job.

  184. And I will not presume to take it.

  185. I will not make myself the arrogant one who believe that I have to bring judgment and make the world right.

  186. He says, am I in God's place?

  187. Your sin certainly deserves punishment.

  188. It certainly deserves judgment because of the suffering that I endured.

  189. But I won't inflict it on you.

  190. I will not take revenge on you.

  191. He trusts the judgment to God.

  192. And he turns.

  193. And in verse 20 makes the most astounding comment.

  194. The most surprising thing.

  195. A few minutes for evil.

  196. But God meant the devil.

  197. Joseph saw that through all of the trials and all of the suffering and all of the injustice that he endured,

  198. God had a good plan that he was working out.

  199. What did that goodness look like?

  200. Let's remember this story.

  201. Let's think through some of these threads of what God's goodness has looked like to Joseph.

  202. First of all, Joseph and his brothers.

  203. These brothers that sold him into slavery.

  204. They hated him for his dreams.

  205. They hated him because he was the favored one.

  206. And they wanted to get rid of him.

  207. They only didn't kill him because in an act of sudden and unexplained mercy,

  208. Judah decided to intervene.

  209. And instead of killing him, they sold him off.

  210. And he was gone for 17 years.

  211. And they never looked for him.

  212. And they never went to find him.

  213. And God brought them back together.

  214. God sovereignly worked through all of Joseph's cycles of suffering and trial and injustice

  215. so that he could be exalted to the right hand of Pharaoh

  216. so that he could be the one in charge of a grain distribution

  217. in the middle of a grand famine.

  218. And then brought his brothers from Canaan down to Egypt

  219. because it was the only place where there was food

  220. so that they could be reconciled.

  221. God worked.

  222. You remember chapters 42, 3, and 4

  223. in surprising ways through Joseph

  224. to help his brothers see their sin,

  225. to help his brothers confess their sin,

  226. to help his brothers overcome the guilt

  227. by repenting of it.

  228. He reconciled them

  229. and brought them together

  230. so that they together were family again.

  231. Not only a family, but they were provided for.

  232. They had everything they needed in Egypt.

  233. They had land.

  234. They had the protection of the right hand man of the king.

  235. Joseph says, and you see in verse 21,

  236. this blessing wasn't just for them too,

  237. it was for their posterity.

  238. Which was a remarkable thing

  239. because in that culture,

  240. one of the best ways to wreak vengeance on your enemies

  241. is to kill their children.

  242. Joseph wouldn't do that.

  243. Instead, God brought them together

  244. into this unity,

  245. into this reconciliation.

  246. The second thing that God did

  247. is that He brought the promise of Abraham

  248. to the next step.

  249. Do you remember Abraham chapter 12?

  250. God comes to him and says,

  251. Abraham,

  252. I am calling you to God

  253. and I'm going to bless you

  254. and I'm going to make you a great nation.

  255. Your descendants will be as many

  256. as the stars in the sky

  257. and the sand in the seashore.

  258. And I will give you land

  259. for you to dwell in.

  260. I will make your descendants

  261. a great nation

  262. and I will bless the nations through you.

  263. I will raise up you to be my people

  264. so that the world may know

  265. what kind of God I am.

  266. Well,

  267. you think about the storyline of Genesis

  268. from 12 to 50.

  269. What have we had?

  270. Abraham had two sons.

  271. Isaac had two sons.

  272. The family isn't growing very big, is it?

  273. And certainly none of these men

  274. showed exemplary character

  275. and faithfulness to God.

  276. God surprisingly and graciously

  277. fulfilled His promise

  278. to an undeserving people.

  279. And here we are in Genesis 50.

  280. And Jacob's household,

  281. now more than 70,

  282. is positioned to thrive.

  283. Positioned to explode

  284. in multiplication.

  285. Positioned even in,

  286. one commentator pointed out

  287. the fact that God brought

  288. the family of promise

  289. down to Egypt

  290. in a culture where

  291. the Egyptians would have

  292. nothing to do with them

  293. so that they couldn't intermarry

  294. with the people around them.

  295. But that they would live

  296. in this isolated

  297. setting

  298. so that they could grow

  299. like an incubator

  300. from a small family

  301. into a great nation of people.

  302. God did all of this.

  303. All of this providing

  304. and all of this furthering

  305. of His promises

  306. being fulfilled

  307. to the patriarchs

  308. through Joseph's suffering,

  309. through his pain.

  310. Not only were they blessed,

  311. but they were a blessing.

  312. Egypt consolidated its power.

  313. Egypt,

  314. through this famine,

  315. was exalted to

  316. the highest place

  317. in the nations.

  318. And the people of Egypt

  319. lived

  320. when other nations

  321. came to them for food

  322. because of Joseph.

  323. Because God,

  324. through suffering,

  325. had brought Joseph

  326. to this place

  327. where God would provide

  328. and be a blessing

  329. to the nations.

  330. Wind the lens again.

  331. Think about the Israelites

  332. standing on the brink

  333. of the promised land.

  334. Looking in

  335. to where the Canaanites were,

  336. the tall men

  337. who scared all the spies

  338. 40 years before.

  339. Wondering.

  340. But then remembering.

  341. How has God been good

  342. to Israel?

  343. Not only did God

  344. preserve the family

  345. of promise

  346. and take them down

  347. into Egypt,

  348. but by the time

  349. Moses is writing this,

  350. they've also been delivered.

  351. They've seen God

  352. work with a mighty hand.

  353. That they became

  354. a great nation,

  355. so great that they

  356. became a threat

  357. to the Pharaoh

  358. who did not know

  359. Joseph anymore.

  360. And then God came

  361. and the book of Exodus

  362. is about

  363. God's powerful

  364. deliverance

  365. of his people.

  366. And the rest

  367. of the Pentateuch

  368. all the way up

  369. to the beginning

  370. of Joshua

  371. is God providing

  372. for his people,

  373. shaping them

  374. to be his people,

  375. teaching them

  376. what kind of a God

  377. he is through the law,

  378. providing for them

  379. as they wander

  380. in the wilderness

  381. and as they face

  382. various trials

  383. and enemies.

  384. God's goodness

  385. is all over.

  386. All over

  387. the history

  388. of his people.

  389. All over

  390. the history

  391. of his people.

  392. I want to stop

  393. for a second

  394. and think about

  395. a little bit

  396. of application

  397. for us.

  398. Sometimes when we

  399. in a church setting

  400. like this

  401. talk about

  402. God's goodness,

  403. isn't God good?

  404. And you're sitting there

  405. and you're going

  406. through a really

  407. hard trial.

  408. You're facing

  409. something that's

  410. overwhelming

  411. and painful

  412. beyond what you

  413. think you can endure.

  414. You think,

  415. that just sounds

  416. like happy power.

  417. That's not real.

  418. Friends,

  419. I want you to think

  420. about Joseph

  421. for a minute.

  422. Joseph spent

  423. those 20 years

  424. prison,

  425. in prison,

  426. treated as a slave,

  427. wrong and unjust.

  428. I think one

  429. of the challenges

  430. that we face

  431. in the trials

  432. that we go through

  433. is a question

  434. of perspective.

  435. We think

  436. that God

  437. ought to fix

  438. things now

  439. for him to be good.

  440. Joseph

  441. clearly didn't

  442. think that

  443. that was necessary.

  444. God's timing

  445. is not our timing.

  446. And his greatest

  447. good for us

  448. is not simply

  449. alleviating the pain

  450. of our life

  451. in this moment.

  452. No matter how

  453. great it is.

  454. Joseph did not

  455. forget

  456. the evil

  457. and the suffering.

  458. He did not

  459. pretend that it

  460. didn't exist.

  461. He acknowledged

  462. it and looked

  463. beyond it

  464. to the goodness

  465. of God.

  466. We're going

  467. through trial.

  468. May we have

  469. this perspective

  470. and be able

  471. to wait

  472. to see

  473. God's goodness.

  474. May we also

  475. do as Joseph

  476. did.

  477. May we focus

  478. on his

  479. goodness.

  480. May we see

  481. that

  482. every day

  483. there are things

  484. that are good

  485. about what God

  486. has done

  487. in our life.

  488. every day

  489. God gives you

  490. blood.

  491. Every day

  492. there are people

  493. who love you.

  494. Every day

  495. there's food

  496. on the table.

  497. And you know

  498. what?

  499. Even when one

  500. of these

  501. is taken away

  502. there are other

  503. ones that are

  504. still there.

  505. I know some

  506. of you may not

  507. experience those

  508. three things I

  509. just mentioned.

  510. But still

  511. there is God's

  512. goodness in your

  513. life.

  514. And even if you

  515. don't see it

  516. right now.

  517. Even if you

  518. are in the

  519. place of Psalm

  520. 88 where

  521. darkness is my

  522. only friend.

  523. And you can't

  524. see any goodness

  525. in your current

  526. situation.

  527. Stop and think

  528. and remember

  529. God's goodness

  530. in the past.

  531. He has been

  532. good to you.

  533. I have no doubt.

  534. It may be hard

  535. to remember

  536. but see it

  537. all.

  538. Focus on

  539. God's goodness

  540. and not just

  541. the tragedy

  542. or the evil

  543. or the pain

  544. that you are

  545. facing now.

  546. That's what

  547. Joseph did

  548. to be able to

  549. say you meant

  550. it for evil

  551. but God

  552. meant it for

  553. good.

  554. Friends I

  555. want to

  556. say that

  557. there are

  558. times when

  559. we do lose

  560. sight of

  561. any goodness

  562. in this world.

  563. There are

  564. times when

  565. we think

  566. it would be

  567. better to

  568. not be

  569. here.

  570. But you

  571. know

  572. the bedrock

  573. the bedrock

  574. of the

  575. Christian

  576. hope

  577. for us

  578. is that

  579. the greatest

  580. evil

  581. ever

  582. in this

  583. world

  584. accomplished

  585. the greatest

  586. good

  587. ever

  588. in this

  589. world.

  590. Joseph

  591. spoke

  592. better than

  593. he knew

  594. when he

  595. said

  596. the words

  597. we meant

  598. it for

  599. evil

  600. but God

  601. meant it

  602. for good

  603. because he

  604. spoke

  605. without

  606. knowing

  607. the details

  608. of what

  609. God would

  610. do

  611. in the

  612. future.

  613. This is

  614. what

  615. Kyle read

  616. earlier

  617. from Acts

  618. but let

  619. me read

  620. Acts 2

  621. 22

  622. again

  623. for you

  624. to remind

  625. you.

  626. Men of

  627. Israel

  628. hear these

  629. words

  630. Jesus

  631. of Nazareth

  632. a man

  633. attested

  634. to you

  635. by God

  636. with mighty

  637. works

  638. and wonders

  639. and signs

  640. that God

  641. did through

  642. him

  643. in your

  644. midst

  645. as you

  646. yourselves

  647. know

  648. this

  649. Jesus

  650. delivered

  651. up

  652. according

  653. to the

  654. definite

  655. plan

  656. and

  657. foreknowledge

  658. of God

  659. you

  660. crucified

  661. and killed

  662. by the

  663. hands

  664. of lawless

  665. men.

  666. Friends

  667. Jesus

  668. was the

  669. best

  670. human being

  671. ever.

  672. He was

  673. attested

  674. to by

  675. mighty

  676. works

  677. of good.

  678. He healed

  679. the sick

  680. and the

  681. lame.

  682. He raised

  683. the dead.

  684. He loved

  685. the outcast.

  686. He challenged

  687. the injustice

  688. in his

  689. world.

  690. He exposed

  691. the religious

  692. hypocrisy.

  693. He exhibited

  694. love in

  695. every time.

  696. Jesus

  697. was the

  698. only

  699. person

  700. who did

  701. not deserve

  702. to die.

  703. Who could

  704. never say

  705. you meant

  706. it for evil

  707. for there

  708. was no

  709. evil in

  710. Jesus.

  711. Jesus.

  712. He did

  713. no evil

  714. and there

  715. was none

  716. in him.

  717. He alone

  718. of all

  719. the human

  720. beings who

  721. have walked

  722. the earth

  723. did not

  724. deserve

  725. to die.

  726. Yet he

  727. the creator

  728. of the world

  729. was crucified

  730. by his

  731. creation.

  732. He the author

  733. of life

  734. was beaten

  735. mocked

  736. and killed

  737. and killed

  738. by those

  739. that he

  740. gave life

  741. to.

  742. He the

  743. sinless

  744. righteous

  745. one

  746. who in

  747. all of

  748. history

  749. alone

  750. did not

  751. deserve

  752. to die

  753. was accused

  754. and executed

  755. as a

  756. common

  757. criminal.

  758. The greatest

  759. evil

  760. the greatest

  761. wrong

  762. that has

  763. ever

  764. happened

  765. is the

  766. death

  767. of Jesus

  768. Christ.

  769. If you

  770. are a

  771. crusader

  772. for injustice

  773. in the world

  774. hear this.

  775. This is the

  776. worst injustice

  777. ever

  778. that Jesus

  779. would not

  780. be

  781. honored

  782. and exalted

  783. but instead

  784. treated

  785. with great

  786. harshness

  787. ultimately

  788. being

  789. crucified.

  790. Not only

  791. did this

  792. great injustice

  793. happen but

  794. as Peter

  795. says in

  796. Acts 2

  797. it happened

  798. by the

  799. definite

  800. plan and

  801. foreknowledge

  802. of God.

  803. God did

  804. not send

  805. Jesus to

  806. try to make

  807. the world

  808. a better

  809. place and

  810. then suddenly

  811. these evil

  812. people

  813. jumped out

  814. and out

  815. of his

  816. control

  817. and beyond

  818. his plan

  819. suddenly did

  820. something that

  821. completely derailed

  822. his plan

  823. and he had

  824. to think

  825. what do I do

  826. now I guess

  827. I'll raise

  828. him from the

  829. dead that

  830. might help.

  831. From the

  832. very beginning

  833. this was

  834. God's plan.

  835. And the

  836. father and

  837. the son

  838. agreed upon

  839. it before

  840. the foundations

  841. of the

  842. earth

  843. God

  844. and Jesus

  845. willingly

  846. came

  847. forsaking

  848. the privilege

  849. of being

  850. God

  851. himself

  852. humbling

  853. himself to

  854. take on

  855. human flesh

  856. making

  857. himself a

  858. servant

  859. and submitting

  860. himself even

  861. to the cross

  862. for us.

  863. for this

  864. was the

  865. greatest

  866. good.

  867. The

  868. greatest

  869. good that

  870. God would

  871. redeem for

  872. himself out

  873. of this

  874. fallen broken

  875. world that

  876. deserves only

  877. judgment for

  878. the evil.

  879. The evil that's

  880. out there and

  881. the evil that's

  882. in our hearts.

  883. God wanted to

  884. bring something

  885. good.

  886. So he would

  887. redeem a

  888. people through

  889. the death and

  890. resurrection of

  891. Christ.

  892. What good is

  893. there for us in

  894. Jesus' death and

  895. resurrection?

  896. Let's think about

  897. it for a minute.

  898. First of all,

  899. we have

  900. forgiveness of

  901. our sins.

  902. Just like

  903. Joseph's

  904. brothers who

  905. bore the

  906. burden of

  907. guilt and

  908. therefore the

  909. fear of

  910. judgment throughout

  911. their whole

  912. lives.

  913. So we,

  914. knowing our

  915. sin, bear

  916. that burden of

  917. guilt and a

  918. fear of

  919. judgment.

  920. And God

  921. comes and

  922. he says,

  923. I will do

  924. for you what

  925. you can't do

  926. for yourself.

  927. I will die in

  928. your place and

  929. take the

  930. punishment for

  931. you just as

  932. Joseph suffered

  933. for his

  934. brothers.

  935. Instead of

  936. inflicting

  937. vengeance, he

  938. offers forgiveness,

  939. freedom, welcome,

  940. reconciliation.

  941. You who don't

  942. deserve it, come

  943. back to me.

  944. This is what God

  945. says is a good

  946. for us.

  947. Secondly, he

  948. brings reconciliation

  949. with God and

  950. adoption into his

  951. family.

  952. just as God

  953. brought Joseph

  954. and Jacob's

  955. family back

  956. into a unity

  957. and into a

  958. place of health

  959. and prosperity

  960. in Egypt.

  961. So God in

  962. Christ calls

  963. all who believe

  964. in him into

  965. his family,

  966. breaking down the

  967. dividing wall,

  968. not only between us

  969. and God because of

  970. our sin, but

  971. between each other,

  972. between Jew and

  973. Gentile.

  974. And he's made us

  975. one people in

  976. Christ and a

  977. great family, a

  978. family that will

  979. be forever with

  980. God.

  981. Not only does he

  982. bring us into

  983. this reconciled

  984. relationship with

  985. God and with one

  986. another, but he

  987. gives us a purpose

  988. in this world.

  989. 1 Peter 2, 9,

  990. that we may

  991. declare the

  992. excellencies of

  993. him who called

  994. us out of

  995. darkness into

  996. his marvelous

  997. light.

  998. God is

  999. that all

  1000. the things

  1001. of our

  1002. life, our

  1003. jobs, our

  1004. family, our

  1005. work, our

  1006. friendships, our

  1007. hobbies, that

  1008. were meant to be

  1009. blessings that we

  1010. so often look for

  1011. to give us meaning

  1012. and purpose and

  1013. significance in our

  1014. world.

  1015. God says, no, I've

  1016. already given you a

  1017. purpose.

  1018. It's to tell about

  1019. the great Savior who

  1020. has rescued you.

  1021. He will one day

  1022. come and

  1023. renew the world.

  1024. He's given us a

  1025. purpose like the

  1026. dying man who

  1027. finally found water

  1028. in the desert is

  1029. refreshed and ran

  1030. around for the rest

  1031. of his life saying,

  1032. do you know where

  1033. the water is?

  1034. It's here.

  1035. Come, find it.

  1036. Drink of it and

  1037. live.

  1038. The goodness of God

1039. to us on the cross

  1040. is forgiveness,

  1041. it's reconciliation,

  1042. it's adoption,

  1043. it's purpose,

  1044. and it's hope.

  1045. God did not

  1046. abandon the

  1047. Egyptians.

  1048. He did not

  1049. abandon his

  1050. covenant people.

  1051. You meant this

  1052. for evil, but God

  1053. meant it for good,

  1054. for the saving of

  1055. many lives as you

  1056. see it now.

  1057. God, the hope

  1058. is that our lives

  1059. will be saved

  1060. because of Christ.

  1061. Death is no longer

  1062. the end, but the

  1063. beginning for all who

  1064. have put their hope

  1065. in Christ.

  1066. We don't need to

  1067. live to seek our

  1068. life just here,

1069. but we can see that

1070. the 70 years that we

  1071. have now are merely

  1072. a preparation for an

  1073. eternity of life with

  1074. God.

  1075. And our pain,

  1076. and our sickness,

  1077. and our trials,

  1078. no matter how deep

  1079. they are,

  1080. no matter how

  1081. overwhelming they

  1082. are,

  1083. they will not last.

  1084. The trial will not

  1085. be forever.

  1086. The evil that was

  1087. done to us will

  1088. not triumph.

  1089. God raised Christ

  1090. from the dead.

  1091. And one day,

  1092. Christ will return,

  1093. and He will make

  1094. all things new.

  1095. And He will redeem

  1096. this fallen,

  1097. broken world.

  1098. And when He does

  1099. it,

  1100. evil will be judged.

  1101. And we will see

  1102. goodness that we've

  1103. never seen before.

  1104. There will be no

  1105. more tears.

  1106. There will be no

  1107. more sorrow.

  1108. There will be no

  1109. more sickness.

  1110. There will be no

  1111. more suffering.

  1112. There will be no

  1113. more death.

  1114. that we will be

  1115. with the author

  1116. of life

  1117. forever.

  1118. So everything

  1119. we do now

  1120. is in preparation

  1121. for that ultimate

  1122. renewal that is

  1123. yet to come.

1124. We have all we need.

  1125. 2 Peter

  1126. says,

  1127. the apostle

  1128. writes this,

  1129. His divine power

  1130. has granted to us

  1131. all things that

  1132. pertain to life

  1133. and godliness

  1134. through the knowledge

  1135. of Him who called

1136. us to His own glory

  1137. and excellence,

  1138. by which He has

  1139. granted to us

  1140. His precious

  1141. and very great

  1142. promises,

  1143. so that through

  1144. them you may

  1145. become partakers

  1146. of the divine

  1147. nature,

  1148. having escaped

  1149. from the corruption

  1150. that is in the

  1151. world because

  1152. of sinful

  1153. desire.

  1154. God has

  1155. granted to us

  1156. great and

  1157. precious promises.

  1158. His goodness

  1159. stands.

  1160. We look at the

  1161. cross and we look

  1162. at the empty tomb

  1163. and if the darkness

1164. in your life is so

  1165. completely overwhelming,

  1166. if the evil

  1167. seems so great,

  1168. look there.

  1169. There is where

  1170. you can stand

  1171. in the midst

  1172. of it.

  1173. There is where

  1174. in the midst

  1175. of the storm

  1176. of your life

  1177. there is not

  1178. just

  1179. resigned

  1180. hope.

  1181. But there is

  1182. real hope.

  1183. God

  1184. needs it

  1185. for good.

  1186. He has

  1187. good for you.

  1188. And friends,

  1189. He may not

  1190. explain it to you.

  1191. He's not

  1192. answerable to us.

  1193. We don't always

  1194. get to see

  1195. in this life

  1196. what the good

  1197. is.

  1198. Friends,

  1199. I know He's

  1200. good.

  1201. and I stand

  1202. at the foot

  1203. of the cross

  1204. in front of you

  1205. and I know

  1206. that He is

  1207. there.

  1208. If you are here

  1209. this morning,

  1210. you are not

  1211. a believer

  1212. in Christ.

  1213. I want to urge

  1214. you.

  1215. I want you to

  1216. hear what I

  1217. have said.

  1218. hope.

  1219. I don't

  1220. hope there is

  1221. because I

  1222. don't honestly

  1223. know what

  1224. hope there is

  1225. outside of

  1226. Christ.

  1227. I don't

  1228. know what

  1229. will keep you

  1230. going when

  1231. it gets that

  1232. hard.

  1233. But I know

  1234. what God has

  1235. done in the

  1236. world.

  1237. I know what

  1238. God did in

  1239. Joseph's life

  1240. and I know

  1241. what God has

  1242. done at the

  1243. cross.

  1244. And I know

  1245. that there

  1246. is a refuge

  1247. and a hope.

  1248. So come to

  1249. Christ.

  1250. Believe today

  1251. in this God

  1252. who loved the

  1253. world so much

  1254. that He did not

  1255. abandon it but

  1256. entered into it

  1257. and endured the

  1258. greatest evil

  1259. ever for your

  1260. good.

  1261. For you who

  1262. have put your

  1263. faith in Christ

  1264. hold fast.

  1265. Hold fast

  1266. to what you

  1267. know.

  1268. Look again

  1269. and again

  1270. and again

  1271. to the Savior

  1272. who loves you.

  1273. He's done good

  1274. for you.

  1275. God what

  1276. love have you

  1277. shown to us

  1278. that you

  1279. are God.

  1280. What amazing

  1281. grace you

  1282. have shown

  1283. to us.

  1284. Lord we

  1285. thank you.

  1286. We praise

  1287. you.

  1288. Even in the
