  1. Merry Christmas to everyone. Merry Christmas season, that is. I've been thinking about the

  2. Christmas season, I've been thinking about Santa Claus, which you might be surprised about,

  3. but I've actually been thinking about him because, well, partly because my son went to the tree

  4. lighting in the New Haven Green last Thursday, and he stood in line until he got to the door,

  5. and then he said, I don't want to go in, I don't want to go in, I don't want to see him, he's scary,

  6. which I don't get, but because I think most of us think, who is, you know, who is Santa Claus? Santa

  7. Claus is this really nice guy who has a big white beard and a big red suit, and he gives us the

  8. things that we want, right? Like, what a great cultural icon of Santa, you know, what better

  9. could we have than that? But then I was listening this week to the song, Santa Claus is Coming to

  10. Town. Do you remember the words to it? You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout,

  11. I'm telling you why. Santa Claus is coming to town. It's actually a little creepy. He knows when you're

  12. sleeping, he knows when you're awake, he knows if you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness

  13. sake. And in the hearts of many kids, and indeed even maybe in some of our own families, we use this

  14. as a motivation during the Christmas season. Be good, or you'll get a coal, lump of coal in your

  15. stocking this year. So kids go to sleep every night. If they've actually listened to the song

  16. and overcome the cultural picture that we paint of Santa Claus, they go to bed in fear. Have I done

  17. enough? Have I been good enough? Have I been good enough this year to get what I want? Friends, I wonder

  18. if we do the same thing with our God. I wonder if we live wondering whether we've been good enough

  19. this year. Seriously, think back to your year of 2014. Can you think of something that you're pretty

  20. sure puts you on the naughty instead of the nice list? A moment of cowardice when you weren't the person

  21. you want to be. An ungracious word spoken from the ugliness of your heart. Maybe a missed opportunity

  22. to bless or help someone else, missed because of selfish preoccupation.

  23. Maybe a failure to invest your life in this past year in the things you say. We can all start with

  24. our prayer life, and that'll pretty much just bury us, right? Maybe helping others, maybe love

  25. your spouse or your children or your roommates, maybe just daily Bible reading. All of us can think

  26. of the things that put us not on the nice list but on the naughty list. And what do we do with that?

  27. Self-condemnation rises up in our hearts. You're not good enough. It can lead us to despair.

  28. Okay, I'm not good enough. I never will be. And we own that. Leads us to performance. I'm going to try

  29. better. Try harder. Do better. I'm going to overcome this. I can do this. And in the midst of it all, we live

  30. with this insecurity. And it's an insecurity, I think, ultimately rooted in our relationship with God

  31. and if God really accepts us. But it plays itself out in all of our other relationships too. And so we look

  32. at our peers and we think, will you accept me into the cool crowd at school? We look at our professional

  33. peers and we think, will you accept me? Am I good enough to have your respect? We look at our spouse

  34. or our families and we think, will you love me or will you leave me? So we think about our naughty list,

  35. we can be buried in shame. We live a life hiding those failures, afraid to let other people see them,

  36. constantly putting on a face so that others will see, won't see who we really are.

  37. And so we live this life of fear and insecurity like we're on probation.

  38. Probation with God, probation with everyone, wondering whether the next step, misstep, is going to

  39. actually blow it for us. Well friends, this brings us to our passage this morning. We're continuing in

  40. our series about the new things that have come with the advent of Christmas. We're looking at Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  41. chapter 31. I failed to get the page number, but it's in your bulletin if you want to look there.

  42. Jeremiah 31, 31 through 34. And as we're looking at this, this is going to be the second in our

  43. four-week series on the advent of what is new. Last week, Nick talked about Jesus coming as our new

  44. king and the joy and freedom that comes from that. Next week, Greg will talk about having a new heart

  45. from Ezekiel. And finally, the week before Christmas, we will talk about the new creation that Jesus will

  46. bring when he will make all things new. But today, Jeremiah talks about a new covenant,

  47. a new covenant between God and his people. And in it, he proclaimed something that is good news.

  48. Good news to the people in their context, good news to us today. So let's read that together. Jeremiah 31,

    Jeremiah 31:31–34

  49. verses 31 through 34.

  50. Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel

  51. and the house of Judah. Not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them

  52. by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. My covenant that they broke, though I was their

  53. husband, declares the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after

  54. those days, declares the Lord. I will put my law within them and I will write it on their hearts,

  55. and I will be their God and they will be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and

  56. each his brother, saying, Know the Lord, for they shall all know me. From the least of them to the

  57. greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquities and I will remember their sin

  58. no more. Let's pray.

  59. Lord, we thank you that your word is a book of hope. That, Lord, in the midst of the messiness

  60. of our lives and the ugliness of our hearts, the ravages of sin, both in and out,

  61. God, you speak words of hope. That you have not abandoned this world, but you are at work

  62. redeeming this world for our good and for your glory. God, I pray that we would hear the hope of

  63. the proclamation of Jeremiah this morning. God, speak it to our hearts and, Lord, may it enrich and

  64. deepen our celebration of this Christmas season. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  65. Jeremiah speaks a word of hope that God will secure for his people a certain and eternal relationship

  66. with the coming of Jesus to earth. We're going to look at what Jeremiah predicted. We're going to look

  67. at how Jesus accomplished it and what it means for us. So, let's do that together this morning.

  68. Jeremiah, as he proclaims it, has kind of two points. He has the bad news and the good news of it.

  69. The first thing that he says in verse 31, having announced, I will bring a new covenant,

  70. as he says in verse 32, that the old covenant was insufficient. The old covenant was faulty.

  71. He says, my people were unable to keep it, and that is why it is an old covenant that no longer will work.

  72. And friends, to understand the significance of this, let me tell you a little bit about where

  73. Jeremiah was speaking and to whom he was speaking. If you remember your Old Testament history,

  74. going back to Abraham, God called a man and said, I will make your descendants a great nation.

  75. And then through his descendants over many years, he raised them up to be a large nation. But remember,

  76. they were in slavery in Egypt. So, God came and he rescued them with a mighty hand and doing great

  77. things. And he delivered them out of Egypt and brought them through great trials and overcoming

  78. insurmountable odds into a promised land where they were meant to be blessed and be a blessing to the

  79. world. And God raised up David to be their king. And they were going to be a kingdom which displayed

  80. the greatness of God. And yet they failed over and over and over again. The covenant, the old covenant

  81. that was made with Moses and with the people, through Moses, with the people at Sinai as God delivered

  82. them from Egypt, was the Old Testament law. It's what the book of Deuteronomy is all about and Leviticus

  83. and all those things. And it was God's instructions on this is what it means for you to be my people.

  84. I will be your God and you will be my people if you keep these laws and commandments and statutes that

  85. I give you today. But the flaw in it is that they could not keep it. And nor could we.

  86. And so God begins to bring judgment to his people.

  87. And so if you remember in the nation of Israel, the northern kingdom in 722 was conquered by a pagan

  88. nation. Assyria came in and those tribes no longer held that land.

  89. For another, I got to do math here, about 130 years or so, the southern kingdom held on.

  90. But with kings who over and over again would turn to other things rather than the Lord.

  91. With people who over and over again, rather than worshiping the one true God,

  92. would turn and worship the idols of their neighbors and their friends.

  93. And if you read the first 30 chapters of Jeremiah, you see that it is a message of judgment.

  94. My people have deserted me. They have turned away from me.

  95. They have forsaken me and I will bring judgment on them.

  96. And Jeremiah, if I understand the history right, spoke this word of hope to people between

  97. the dates of 598 and 586.

  98. Now, you may not remember what happens then.

  99. 598 is the first incursion of the Babylonian empire into Israel.

  100. They came and they took away many of the people and many of the treasures as tribute.

  101. Babylonians came and said, if you give us all these things, we won't completely wipe you out.

  102. So their nation had already lost most of its glory, had become a vassal state under the Babylonian rule.

  103. But there was still a puppet king in place and he rebelled.

  104. And in 586, the Babylonians would come back and they would tear down the walls of the temple

  105. and they would destroy the walls of the city and they would salt the fields

  106. and they would make it an unlivable place.

  107. The destruction was great.

  108. And in the midst of it, the people must be thinking, God, where are you?

  109. Have we blown it so badly that you have forsaken us forever?

  110. Have we violated our probation in such a way that all we get is judgment?

  111. Friends, I wonder if you ask the same question.

  112. Have I blown it so badly?

  113. There's no hope for me.

  114. God has abandoned me.

  115. There's no way that he can bring me back.

  116. When you look deep at the heart of what drives you, what drives you to be a great student,

  117. what drives you to be a great husband and father, what drives you to succeed in your career,

  118. what drives you to please your friends in your high school,

  119. is it this fear that maybe you're not good enough at all

  120. and you're trying desperately to overcome it?

  121. Friends, this is why what Jeremiah has to say to Israel in 590 B.C.

  122. is also what he has to say to us today.

  123. And he says, the old covenant is faulty,

  124. but the good news is that I'm not done.

  125. The good news is that there is a new covenant that will come.

  126. And a covenant is the words that we don't use today,

  127. but that God uses in his Bible to talk about what is the arrangement or what's the framework,

  128. what are the stipulations on how God and his people relate?

  129. How does that work?

  130. And what God said is,

  131. I know that you can't keep the old covenant.

  132. I knew it when I gave it to you.

  133. Go back and read Deuteronomy carefully.

  134. He knew it.

  135. He knew it when he gave it.

  136. He said, I'm going to tell you how to do it,

  137. and you're not going to be able to do it.

  138. And that's why I've put in provisions for God,

  139. for my gracious work to cover over your sin,

  140. even in the law.

  141. But as Galatians reminds us,

  142. the law was given to point us to something greater than that.

  143. And Jeremiah,

  144. in the place of the deepest darkness and the greatest despair of the people of Israel,

  145. spoke this word of hope.

  146. Behold, the days are coming when I will make a new covenant.

  147. I'm going to rework this relationship.

  148. I'm going to reframe it in a different way.

  149. What does he say that he does?

  150. Let's look at it.

  151. So, the new, he says,

  152. I'm going to bring a new covenant that's better.

  153. I'm going to bring a better plan for my people.

  154. And look with me again,

  155. verses 33 and 34.

  156. Do you see what he says?

  157. There are lots of things that he says here.

  158. One thing he says is,

  159. look, I'm going to change the place of the law.

  160. Rather than it being something that's posted on the wall,

  161. I'm going to write it on your heart.

  162. Rather than being something that's simply held out for you to hold on to,

  163. I'm going to actually put it inside of you so that you can actually do it.

  164. Greg is going to preach on this next week,

  165. so I'm not going to say a lot more about this.

  166. Come back next week for the great heart transformation that God will work

  167. to make his people not only able,

  168. but wanting to please and honor and obey him.

  169. He says it's not going to be an external ritualism anymore.

  170. It's going to be this internal transformation

  171. that produces the kind of people

  172. who reflect the kind of God that he is.

  173. He reminds them of the promise in Exodus 19.

  174. Then I will be their God,

  175. and they will be my people.

  176. It's the exact same words

  177. that he used when he established the Mosaic Covenant.

  178. Here he repeats it again.

  179. He says this new covenant is going to be

  180. not simply overrunning the old one.

  181. It's going to be fulfilling it.

  182. It's going to be finally enabling this relationship to happen

  183. where I will be a God to my people,

  184. and they will be mine.

  185. And it will give them an identity,

  186. and it will give them a purpose in the world.

  187. They will know that beyond anything else,

  188. they are my people,

  189. and that will be the most important thing about them.

  190. And their purpose will be to live for my glory,

  191. and that will be for their good in the world.

  192. And they won't have to have other people speaking to them,

  193. saying,

  194. Know the Lord!

  195. Know the Lord!

  196. There will be no priests.

  197. There will be no temple.

  198. There will be no courtyards.

  199. There will be no curtains.

  200. But as you see in verse 34a,

  201. they will all know the Lord

  202. from the least to the greatest.

  203. God opens up his doors.

  204. That not only will his people be restored,

  205. but he will open up the invitation

  206. wide to the whole world.

  207. And what good news that is for us,

  208. because for most of us,

  209. we aren't descendants of Abraham.

  210. And yet he says to us,

  211. Come, this new covenant is for all people,

  212. for all tribes and tongues and nations.

  213. But the most important thing,

  214. I want you to look with me in verses 32 and 33.

  215. I'm sorry, 33 and 34.

  216. I want you to look at the subject and verb again.

  217. This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after these days.

  218. I will put my law within them.

  219. I will write it on their hearts.

  220. And I will be their God.

  221. And they shall be my people.

  222. And then skipping down to the end of 34,

  223. I will forgive their sins.

  224. And I will remember their sin no more.

  225. Friends, the most amazing and the most wonderful thing about the new covenant

  226. is that God says, I will do this.

  227. In the Mosaic covenant,

  228. there was this amazing mix of conditionality and unconditionality

  229. where God makes great promises,

  230. but then there's always this,

  231. if you keep my commandments,

  232. if you will obey me,

  233. if you will keep my laws.

  234. And constantly throughout the Old Testament,

  235. you see the people wrestling with these two things,

  236. the unconditionalness and the conditionalness of what God has done.

  237. In the new covenant, God says,

  238. I will do this.

  239. I have seen your weakness.

  240. I have seen your sin.

  241. I've seen your failure.

  242. And I know you can't be good enough.

  243. I know you will never be able to measure up

  244. to what is necessary to be my people.

  245. And I will accomplish this.

  246. I will do it.

  247. I will make a new covenant with my people.

  248. This is the word of hope for us.

  249. Isn't it?

  250. Because like Israel,

  251. we know we can't keep it.

  252. We know that if there is a cosmic list of naughty and nice,

  253. we are on the naughty side.

  254. Maybe not in the balance.

  255. Maybe some of you are really good people,

  256. and there's only some over on the naughty side.

  257. There's a lot on the good side.

  258. I know when I look into my heart,

  259. there's as much on the naughty side

  260. as there is in the good.

  261. Probably more.

  262. I look at my life.

  263. I see how little I live out what I hope

  264. and what I want to be.

  265. But like the nation of Israel,

  266. our personal history can hear this word of hope.

  267. Because when we see that all of our trying

  268. and all of our efforts to be good enough,

  269. to try to measure up,

  270. to try to get out of probation,

  271. can't ever do anything

  272. but ultimately bring us to a point of despair.

  273. I can't do it.

  274. I give up.

  275. Only condemnation.

  276. God speaks this word of hope.

  277. I will do this for you.

  278. I will do for you what you can't do for yourself.

  279. Friends, this is what Christmas is all about.

  280. This is about God initiating His plan

  281. of establishing this covenant,

  282. not because people had earned it or deserved it,

  283. but simply because out of God's eternal redemptive plan,

  284. He had determined that He would do this,

  285. that He would show the kind of God that He is

  286. by redeeming a people for Himself,

  287. that He would establish this final covenant

  288. on His own terms

  289. and by His own work.

  290. Friends, this is what Jeremiah predicted,

  291. and this is what we celebrate at Christmastime.

  292. Because Jesus, as He comes,

  293. establishes the new covenant.

  294. Look at verse 34b.

  295. This is at the very core of it, isn't it?

  296. Because it was their sin and their iniquity,

  297. their inability to obey the law

  298. that condemned Israel.

  299. And it is our sin and our inability

  300. to live a life of goodness perfectly

  301. that puts us in this same place

  302. of failure before God.

  303. And God comes and He says,

  304. alright,

  305. my beloved human beings who are unable,

  306. I will send a human being to do for you

  307. what you can't do for yourself.

  308. At Christmas, we celebrate the incarnation,

  309. God become flesh.

  310. Jesus really was a human being,

  311. and it was really, really important

  312. that He was.

  313. Because only a human being,

  314. living out the life that He did,

  315. could solve this conundrum.

  316. Jesus came

  317. to live the perfect life

  318. that Israel was called to live.

  319. Jesus came

  320. to be the perfect good human

  321. that we long to be,

  322. but aren't.

  323. And He couldn't have done this

  324. if He wasn't actually human.

  325. Hebrews reminds us

  326. that the blood of bulls and goats

  327. can't deal with the problem of sin.

  328. Sometimes, I think,

  329. we wonder,

  330. can't God just wave His hand?

  331. I don't know if you know

  332. the movie,

  333. The Prince of Egypt,

  334. but there's this great scene

  335. where Moses comes back

  336. and he sees his brother

  337. and he's like,

  338. hey,

  339. and Moses is feeling like,

  340. I broke the laws.

  341. And Pharaoh says,

  342. I am the Pharaoh,

  343. the morning star,

  344. and the evening sun,

  345. and I say that it is not so.

  346. And it's,

  347. we wish that God would do that.

  348. Just wave His hand

  349. and say,

  350. ah,

  351. don't worry about it.

  352. But in fact,

  353. God had a much better plan.

  354. Because for God,

  355. sin is just a terrible,

  356. terrible thing.

  357. It is evil in the world

  358. and it is evil in our hearts.

  359. And He's not willing to just say,

  360. it's not as bad as you think it is.

  361. He's actually going to say,

  362. it's worse than you think it is.

  363. It is.

  364. But the good news is

  365. that I will take care of it for you.

  366. And so Jesus,

  367. this God man comes

  368. and He lives a life

  369. of perfect obedience

  370. for us.

  371. He is the perfect human.

  372. He is the Israel

  373. that was not,

  374. the Son who actually followed

  375. all of the laws.

  376. He was tempted in every way

  377. as we were

  378. because He was human,

  379. yet without sin.

  380. And so He lives

  381. this perfect life

  382. for us.

  383. And then,

  384. having done that,

  385. He offers Himself up

  386. as a substitute

  387. to pay the penalty

  388. for our

  389. sin.

  390. sin.

  391. So having lived

  392. the perfect life for us

  393. that we could not live,

  394. now He does,

  395. in His flesh,

  396. He receives upon His body

  397. the punishment of sin

  398. that we deserve.

  399. The death that we deserve.

  400. The wrath of God

  401. against cosmic evil

  402. that resides in our hearts

  403. and plays itself out

  404. in our petty

  405. unkindnesses

  406. every day.

  407. Jesus went to the cross

  408. in our place

  409. to remove

  410. that

  411. stain of sin,

  412. to take

  413. the punishment

  414. for that sin,

  415. and He could only do it

  416. as a human.

  417. And friends,

  418. there's one more stage

  419. in this,

  420. isn't there?

  421. because the human

  422. who came

  423. and lived a perfect life,

  424. the human

  425. who then died

  426. the most unjust death

  427. in the world,

  428. is a human

  429. who rose again

  430. from the dead.

  431. He rose

  432. not as a spirit,

  433. but as a man

  434. with a body.

  435. And His disciples

  436. could put their hands

  437. and touch

  438. the nails,

  439. the holes in His hands.

  440. They could feel

  441. the scar in His side

  442. where He was pierced.

  443. Jesus rose

  444. as a man

  445. so that

  446. in His victory

  447. over sin

  448. and death,

  449. He might then

  450. invite us

  451. to join

  452. with Him.

  453. Nick,

  454. Greg,

  455. this is what you guys

  456. get to unpack

  457. for the next two weeks.

  458. A new heart

  459. and a new creation.

  460. The outworking

  461. of the human

  462. who rose

  463. from the dead.

  464. That we get

  465. caught up

  466. in His train.

  467. Caught up in Him

  468. as He establishes

  469. this new kingdom

  470. for us.

  471. By rising from the dead,

  472. He reminds us

  473. that the old covenant

  474. doesn't have

  475. the last word.

  476. But by rising

  477. from the dead,

  478. we now have

  479. this new covenant.

  480. Because do you see

  481. what Jesus has done

  482. through His life

  483. and death

  484. and resurrection?

  485. He has now

  486. become the guarantor

  487. of our relationship

  488. with God.

  489. He comes

  490. and He says,

  491. I have met

  492. all the stipulations.

  493. I have met

  494. all the requirements.

  495. What God requires

  496. of His people,

  497. I have done.

  498. So there's no more

  499. probation.

  500. There's no more

  501. fear of,

  502. if I blow it

  503. this time,

  504. will He just

  505. cast me off?

  506. There's no more

  507. wondering,

  508. can I be good enough?

  509. Because the answer is,

  510. no, you can't.

  511. But He has been

  512. for you.

  513. Friends,

  514. this is the last covenant

  515. that God makes

  516. with His people.

  517. This is the final covenant.

  518. This is what

  519. the writer of the Hebrews

  520. reminds us

  521. is the eternal covenant.

  522. That before the beginning

  523. of time,

  524. God planned

  525. that this would be

  526. the pinnacle

  527. of His work

  528. of relating

  529. to His creation.

  530. And that's what

  531. we celebrate

  532. with Christmas.

  533. Christmas is the

  534. opening movement

  535. of this final work

  536. that accomplishes

  537. this new covenant

  538. with God.

  539. We've sung

  540. this song a lot

  541. in the last

  542. year and a half.

  543. What reason

  544. have I to doubt?

  545. Why would I dwell

  546. in fear?

  547. All I have known

  548. is grace.

  549. My future

  550. in Christ

  551. is clear.

  552. My sins

  553. have been paid

  554. in full.

  555. There's no

  556. condemnation here.

  557. I live in the

  558. good of this.

  559. My Father

  560. has brought me near.

  561. I'm leaving

  562. my fears

  563. behind me now.

  564. The old

  565. is gone.

  566. The new

  567. has come.

  568. What you

  569. complete

  570. is completely

  571. done.

  572. We're heirs

  573. with Christ.

  574. The victory won.

  575. What you complete

  576. is completely

  577. done.

  578. I don't know

  579. what lies

  580. ahead.

  581. What if I

  582. fail

  583. again?

  584. You are

  585. my confidence.

  586. You will

  587. keep me

  588. till the end.

  589. The old

  590. is gone.

  591. The new

  592. has come.

  593. What you

  594. complete

  595. is completely

  596. done.

  597. Friends,

  598. what we

  599. celebrate

  600. in the

  601. coming of

  602. Jesus

  603. is the

  604. establishing

  605. of this

  606. new covenant

  607. between God

  608. and his

  609. people.

  610. God is not

  611. out to get

  612. you.

  613. He's not

  614. watching you

  615. when you

  616. sleep and

  617. when you

  618. wake,

  619. wondering

  620. if you'll

  621. be naughty

  622. or nice

  623. anymore.

  624. God has

  625. come not

  626. to get

  627. you,

  628. but to

  629. make you

  630. his.

  631. He has

  632. come to

  633. rescue you

  634. from your

  635. insecurity,

  636. from your

  637. fear,

  638. from your

  639. performance,

  640. from your

  641. ritual.

  642. He has

  643. come to

  644. make you

  645. his.

  646. And he

  647. has done

  648. everything

  649. necessary for

  650. him to

  651. make you

  652. his in

  653. Christ.

  654. So if

  655. you're here

  656. this morning

  657. and you're

  658. wondering what

  659. is this

  660. Christianity

  661. about,

  662. this is

  663. what God

  664. calls you.

  665. God calls

  666. you to

  667. look at

  668. Jesus and

  669. what he

  670. has done

  671. and consider

  672. that he

  673. alone has

  674. done the

  675. one thing

  676. that you

  677. need to

  678. know God,

  679. the one

  680. thing that

  681. you can't

  682. do.

  683. And he

  684. calls you

  685. to come

  686. and humble

  687. yourself

  688. before him

  689. and throw

  690. yourself on

  691. faith,

  692. on Christ,

  693. what he

  694. has done,

  695. forsaking all

  696. your goodness

  697. and all the

  698. things you're

  699. trying to do

  700. in hopes that

  701. God might

  702. accept you.

  703. He says,

  704. come,

  705. enter into

  706. this new

  707. covenant

  708. relationship

  709. that I

  710. have established

  711. and I

  712. have sealed.

  713. Come and

  714. by faith

  715. enter in.

  716. Friends,

  717. for those

  718. of you

  719. who have

  720. already

  721. entered into

  722. that

  723. relationship,

  724. the new

  725. covenant

  726. reminds us

  727. that we

  728. are called

  729. to live

  730. as his

  731. people now,

  732. to be

  733. freed from

  734. the fear

  735. and insecurity

  736. that consume

  737. us,

  738. from the

  739. performance

  740. that so

  741. easily

  742. drives

  743. our every,

  744. to free

  745. us from

  746. the despair

  747. in the face

  748. of our

  749. failure

  750. that buries

  751. us,

  752. we are now

  753. free to

  754. love,

  755. free to

  756. serve,

  757. free to

  758. worship,

  759. free to

  760. rest,

  761. free to

  762. trust and

  763. obey,

  764. free to

  765. sing of

  766. a great

  767. God who

  768. has done

  769. this great

  770. thing for

  771. me.

  772. Celebrating

  773. Christmas is

  774. celebrating

  775. this new

  776. work.

  777. As the

  778. angel told

  779. Joseph,

  780. you shall

  781. call his

  782. name Jesus

  783. for he will

  784. save his

  785. people from

  786. their sin.

  787. let's pray.

  788. Lord, we

  789. thank you.

  790. We thank

  791. you that you

  792. have done

  793. what we

  794. could not

  795. do.

  796. God, what

  797. a great

  798. Savior we

  799. have in

  800. Jesus.

  801. What a

  802. great hope

  803. and a great

  804. joy we

  805. celebrate

  806. every Christmas

  807. as we

  808. remember your

  809. initiative

  810. that you

  811. will do

  812. this for

  813. us.

  814. God, I

  815. pray, I

  816. pray that in

  817. the midst of

  818. the busyness

  819. of our

  820. cultural

  821. celebration

  822. of this

  823. holiday,

  824. God, that

  825. you would

  826. work in

  827. our hearts,

  828. Lord, that

  829. a deeper,

  830. more rich

  831. appreciation of

  832. what we are

  833. celebrating when

  834. we talk about

  835. comfort and

  836. joy.

  837. Lord, that

  838. what would

  839. spring from

  840. our hearts

  841. would be a

  842. true worship

  843. of knowing

  844. that we are

  845. yours because

  846. of what you

  847. have done

  848. for us.

  849. We pray this

  850. in Jesus'

  851. name.

  852. Amen.

  853. We're going

  854. to stand and

  855. sing,

  856. Hark, the

  857. herald angels

  858. sing, and it

  859. doesn't mean

  860. that the

  861. angel's name

  862. is Harold.

  863. It means

  864. that he is

  865. pronouncing

  866. the good

  867. work of

  868. God, born

  869. to raise

  870. the sons

  871. of earth,

  872. born to

  873. give them

  874. second birth.

  875. Hark, the

  876. herald angels

  877. sing, glory

  878. to the

  879. newborn king.

  880. Hark, the

  881. herald angels

  882. sing, glory

  883. to the

  884. newborn king.

  885. Wraith

  886. to the
