  1. Haggai chapter 2, beginning at verse 1.

    Haggai 2 chapter mention

  2. In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came

  3. by the hand of Haggai the prophet.

  4. Speak now to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua, the son

  5. of Jehoshadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, who is

  6. left among you who saw this house in its former glory?

  7. How do you see it now?

  8. Is it not as nothing in your eyes?

  9. Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the Lord.

  10. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehoshadak, the high priest.

  11. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord.

  12. Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts.

  13. According to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt, my spirit remains

  14. in your midst.

  15. Fear not.

  16. For, thus says the Lord of hosts, yet once more in a little while I will shake the heavens

  17. and the earth and the sea and the dry land, and I will shake all nations so that the treasure

  18. of all nations shall come in.

  19. And I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts.

  20. The silver is mine and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts.

  21. The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts.

  22. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lord of hosts.

  23. On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the

  24. Lord came by Haggai the prophet.

  25. Thus says the Lord of hosts, ask the priests about the law.

  26. If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread

  27. or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?

  28. The priest answered and said, no.

  29. Then Haggai said, if someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of

  30. these, does it become unclean?

  31. The priest answered and said, it does become unclean.

  32. Then Haggai answered and said, so is it with this people.

  33. And with this nation before me, declares the Lord.

  34. And so with every work of their hands and what they offer there is unclean.

  35. Now then, consider from this day onward.

  36. Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the Lord, how did you fare?

  37. When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten.

  38. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty.

  39. I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail,

  40. yet you did not turn to me, declares the Lord.

  41. Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month.

  42. Since the day that the foundation of the Lord's temple was laid, consider, is the seed yet in the barn?

  43. Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing.

  44. But from this day on, I will bless you.

  45. The word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month.

  46. He speaks to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth

  47. and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms.

  48. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations

  49. and overthrow the chariots and their riders and the horses and their riders shall go down,

  50. every one by the sword of his brother.

  51. On that day, declares the Lord of hosts,

  52. I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the Lord,

  53. and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the Lord of hosts.

  54. So last week, we looked at Haggai chapter 1 and saw two key phrases.

    Haggai 1 chapter mention

  55. First, Haggai said, consider your ways.

  56. This is chapter 1, verse 5 and 7.

    Isaiah 1:5

  57. We saw there that God confronts us about our misplaced priorities.

  58. Haggai was prophesying to the people who had returned to Jerusalem from the exile in Babylon.

  59. They had been back in Jerusalem for 18 years,

  60. but the temple which the Babylonians had destroyed was still in ruins.

  61. And Haggai confronted the people.

  62. He said, you've repaired your own houses, you've rebuilt your own houses,

  63. but the house of God is an abandoned construction site.

  64. It looks terrible.

  65. And it's an indication of how little you care about God.

  66. Because He promised that He would dwell among you if you build a house for Him.

  67. Your priorities have been out of whack,

  68. and your life has not been going well as a result.

  69. So consider.

  70. But the second phrase we saw in chapter 1, verse 13, was a word of encouragement.

  71. I am with you.

  72. When we take His word to heart, God encourages us.

  73. Now, unlike many other Old Testament prophets who were ignored or persecuted,

  74. the people actually listened to Haggai.

  75. They took His word to heart and they obeyed it.

  76. And so God encouraged them and gave them energy from His word and from His spirit.

  77. And they began this project of building the temple once again.

  78. But building the temple was a massive multi-year project.

  79. I wonder, have you ever begun a new habit?

  80. Or started a big project?

  81. Or embarked on a long journey?

  82. For the first couple of days or even couple of weeks, it's exciting.

  83. Because it's new.

  84. But after a few days or a few weeks, the initial enthusiasm dies down.

  85. And the difficulty of the project sets in.

  86. You know, many people, perhaps you, have made a New Year's resolution to start going to the gym.

  87. But according to one study, of all the people who bought gym memberships in December,

  88. 20% of them quit by June.

  89. Another 20% quit by the following December.

  90. And the reason why fitness clubs stay in business is only half the people who still have their gym membership

  91. actually go regularly, twice a week or more.

  92. At this point in the year, the holiday season has come and gone.

  93. And we're facing two or three more months of short days, long nights, cold and sometimes dreary weather.

  94. And it's easy to get discouraged and defeated.

  95. And the same pattern can happen spiritually.

  96. If you're planting a new church, or starting a new ministry, starting a new small group,

  97. the first couple of months or even a year can be exciting.

  98. But after some time, all kinds of challenges can come up.

  99. Relational tensions, disagreements about strategy and priorities, disappointing lack of response.

  100. And you can begin to wonder, was it really worth it anyway?

  101. Maybe there was a time in your life when you had great energy for God.

  102. Maybe as a young believer.

  103. But now that energy and that drive that you once had has faded away.

  104. And your life as a Christian feels like the gray skies on a bone-chilling, rainy New Haven day.

  105. Now what we'll see in this chapter, in Haggai chapter 2, is that God not only encourages us in our new beginnings,

    Haggai 2 chapter mention

  106. He encourages us at each step along the way as well.

  107. What we're going to see is that God encourages us in three ways.

  108. He encourages us despite slow progress in the past.

  109. He encourages us despite, sorry, despite slow progress in the present.

  110. Despite lingering defilements from the past.

  111. And despite dim prospects for the future.

  112. So we'll look at each of those in turn.

  113. So first, God encourages us despite slow progress in the present.

  114. This is verses 1 through 9.

  115. The end of chapter 1 tells us it was the 24th day of the 6th month when the people began to work on the temple.

  116. And God sent them a message of encouragement.

  117. I'm with you.

  118. And just four weeks later, 7th month, 21st day of the month, God sent Haggai to the people with another message of encouragement.

  119. Actually the same, He says the same thing.

  120. I'm with you.

  121. It expands on it.

  122. But the date is significant, 21st day of the 7th month, because the 21st day of the 7th month, which would be late October in our calendar, was the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles.

  123. It was sort of the end of the major Israelite holiday season.

  124. The 7th month began with the Feast of Trumpets.

  125. And then there was a fasting and prayer day, the Day of Atonement.

  126. And then there was a week-long Feast of Tabernacles from the 15th to the 21st.

  127. And large numbers of visitors would come to Jerusalem for that great feast.

  128. It was sort of like a national campout.

  129. They'd camp out in tents for a week, remembering how when they came out of Egypt, God had sustained them in the wilderness, when they lived in tents or tabernacles, temporary dwellings.

  130. And they would also remember, at that same time, how hundreds of years ago, the great King Solomon, at the height of Israelite history, had dedicated his magnificent temple to the Lord in Jerusalem at the end of the Feast of Tabernacles, on the exact same day.

  131. And the glory of God had come down in a cloud to dwell in this temple.

  132. So the feast was a reminder not only of the Exodus, but also of the glory days of Jerusalem.

  133. But for the returned exiles, for the people of Haggai's time, those glory days were long gone.

  134. The king was gone.

  135. The temple, once glorious, had been plundered and destroyed by the Babylonians.

  136. And there was only a foundation that hadn't been worked on for 15 years.

  137. In verse 3, Haggai put into words what people were thinking and feeling.

  138. He says, who's left among you who saw this house in its former glory?

  139. How do you see it now?

  140. Is it not as nothing in your eyes?

  141. I mean, after four weeks of working on an abandoned construction site, even with modern tools, it doesn't look like much.

  142. And Haggai acknowledged the discouragement that the people felt when they saw the slow progress of the work.

  143. And it was beginning to sink in how long it was going to take to carry out this project.

  144. They looked back to a glorious past that was long gone.

  145. They saw slow progress in the present.

  146. And they projected their present condition onto their vision for the future.

  147. But Haggai acknowledged that.

  148. He gave voice to their discouragement.

  149. But he didn't stop there.

  150. In verse 4, he continued.

  151. He says, yet now, be strong, O Zerubbabel.

  152. Be strong, O Joshua.

  153. Be strong, all you people of the land.

  154. Work, for I am with you.

  155. Haggai drew on the words that the Lord had spoken to Joshua a long time ago.

  156. When Joshua was leading the people of Israel from the wilderness,

  157. where they had lived in tents into the promised land for the first time.

  158. And they had nothing.

  159. They had no king, no temple, no land.

  160. Nothing except the clothes on their backs and the tents they were living in.

  161. And the Lord said to Joshua, just as I was with Moses,

  162. so I will be with you.

  163. I will not leave you or forsake you.

  164. Be strong and courageous.

  165. Be strong and very courageous.

  166. Have I not commanded you, be strong and courageous?

  167. Three times he repeats, be strong.

  168. Don't be frightened.

  169. Don't be dismayed.

  170. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

  171. Haggai echoed those same words over 500 years later.

  172. Three times he said, be strong.

  173. To Zerubbabel, to Joshua, and to the people as a whole.

  174. And he reassured them, I am with you.

  175. God is with you just like he was when you came out of Egypt.

  176. Remember what you were just celebrating in this Feast of Tabernacles,

  177. that God was with you in the desert when you were living in tents,

  178. when you had nothing,

  179. and he led you with the pillar of cloud by day

  180. and the pillar of fire by night,

  181. the signs of his Holy Spirit dwelling among you.

  182. He says, my spirit remains in your midst.

  183. I promised that I would never leave you nor forsake you,

  184. and I haven't and I won't.

  185. So fear not.

  186. Now in one sense, it's right to fear the Lord.

  187. When Haggai confronted the people in chapter 1

  188. about their misplaced priorities,

  189. verse 12 says they responded by fearing the Lord.

  190. In other words, with a reverential awe

  191. that motivated them to listen and obey

  192. because they realized who was speaking to them.

  193. That's a right kind of fear.

  194. But in chapter 2, verse 5,

  195. Haggai warned them against a wrong kind of fear,

  196. a paralyzing, faithless, debilitating fear.

  197. He said, if you stand in awe of the Lord,

  198. you don't need to be terrified by anything else,

  199. and you will never be alone.

  200. My spirit remains among you, fear not.

  201. When we feel discouraged and defeated,

  202. when we face long-term challenges

  203. and see little or no progress in the present,

  204. God mercifully speaks.

  205. He speaks into our despondency and our depression,

  206. and he speaks to us about his sufficiency

  207. and his faithfulness.

  208. Three times, Haggai reminded the people

  209. who is speaking to them,

  210. declares the Lord, declares the Lord,

  211. declares the Lord of hosts.

  212. That means the Lord of the armies of heaven.

  213. When you're discouraged,

  214. it's good to acknowledge

  215. the source of the discouragement, to name it.

  216. It's right to acknowledge our own feelings,

  217. whether that's sadness or anger or disappointment

  218. or whatever they may be,

  219. but Haggai says, don't stop there.

  220. Yet now hear the word of the Lord.

  221. You see, it's very easy to focus in

  222. on our present troubles

  223. and our present lack of progress

  224. and project that,

  225. our present experience, into the future.

  226. But Haggai says no.

  227. Instead, you must fix your eyes

  228. on what God has certainly promised to do

  229. in the future

  230. and let God's future promises

  231. shape your present experience

  232. rather than the other way around.

  233. Verse 6 begins with the word for.

  234. It's an important word.

  235. Fear not for,

  236. because thus does the Lord of hosts

  237. yet once more in a little while

  238. I will shake

  239. the heavens and the earth

  240. and the sea and the dry land.

  241. And he promised

  242. that one day he would fill

  243. that house,

  244. he would fill his temple

  245. with glory

  246. and peace.

  247. God says you can know

  248. that I'm with you now

  249. despite the slow progress

  250. because I'm telling you in advance

  251. what I've resolved to do

  252. in the future

  253. with this.

  254. Haggai said to the people,

  255. I'm going to make

  256. this temple more glorious

  257. than it ever was.

  258. More glorious

  259. than when King Solomon

  260. built it with gold

  261. and silver

  262. and bronze

  263. and cedar

  264. when he was the richest

  265. and wisest man in the world

  266. and all kinds of people

  267. from all over the nations

  268. as far away

  269. as the Queen of Sheba

  270. came to give tribute

  271. to honor

  272. this great king

  273. and this great God.

  274. Now you might ask,

  275. did that ever really happen?

  276. Did the temple

  277. that they were building

  278. actually become

  279. that glorious?

  280. Well in one sense

  281. it did.

  282. According to Ezra chapter 6

    Ezra 6 chapter mention

  283. in Haggai's own lifetime

  284. the Persian emperor Darius

  285. paid the construction costs

  286. for the rebuilt temple

  287. in Jerusalem.

  288. The treasures

  289. from the treasury

  290. of another nation

  291. that built up

  292. the house of the Lord.

  293. And a few centuries later

  294. the temple was expanded

  295. and adorned by King Herod.

  296. Treasures from a few

  297. other nations

  298. were brought into the temple

  299. but only a few.

  300. And it was never

  301. a place

  302. of lasting peace.

  303. But in the New Testament

  304. we see God

  305. beginning to fulfill

  306. Haggai's prophecy

  307. in an even greater way.

  308. We see God

  309. beginning to shake

  310. the heavens and the earth

  311. to bring in the treasures

  312. from all nations

  313. and fill his house

  314. with glory.

  315. You see in the New Testament

  316. the New Testament

  317. shows us

  318. that in the person

  319. of Jesus

  320. God was establishing

  321. a greater temple.

  322. A place where his glory

  323. would dwell on earth.

  324. Where God

  325. and humanity

  326. would meet

  327. and be reconciled

  328. for all eternity.

  329. Jesus said in John chapter 2

    John 2 chapter mention

  330. he said destroy this temple

  331. and in three days

  332. I will raise it up.

  333. And the people

  334. couldn't figure out

  335. what he meant.

  336. But John says

  337. he was speaking

  338. about the temple

  339. of his own body.

  340. At Jesus' baptism

  341. the heavens were torn open

  342. and the glory of God

  343. descended

  344. in the form of a dove

  345. on Jesus.

  346. At Jesus' crucifixion

  347. the earth shook.

  348. And after his resurrection

  349. we see Jesus

  350. the risen Lord

  351. breathing peace

  352. on his disciples.

  353. sending his spirit

  354. upon them

  355. sending them out

  356. to the ends of the earth

  357. to gather in people

  358. from all nations.

  359. You see the New Testament

  360. says that

  361. we who believe in Jesus

  362. are God's temple.

  363. That God now lives in us

  364. by his spirit.

  365. But the temple

  366. isn't a physical building

  367. but it's a community

  368. of people

  369. who are filled

  370. with the spirit of God.

  371. Through Jesus

  372. we have peace

  373. with God

  374. we're now his ambassadors

  375. extending that grace

  376. and peace to the world.

  377. And the book of Revelation

  378. speaks of a future day.

  379. It says there'll be a day

  380. when there'll be

  381. a great multitude

  382. that no one can count

  383. from every tribe

  384. and every language

  385. and every nation

  386. and every people

  387. who will stand before

  388. the throne of God

  389. and of the Lamb King Jesus.

  390. And this Jesus

  391. will one day

  392. make all things new.

  393. And God will dwell

  394. with us forever

  395. and wipe every tear

  396. away from our eyes

  397. and the new Jerusalem

  398. will be a temple

  399. filled with the glory

  400. of God.

  401. The kings of the earth

  402. will bring their glory

  403. and honor into it

  404. and a river of life

  405. will run through it.

  406. And on either side

  407. of the river

  408. the tree of life

  409. and the leaves of the tree

  410. are for the healing

  411. of the nations.

  412. And it says

  413. we will see his face

  414. and there will be

  415. no more night

  416. for the Lord God

  417. will be our light

  418. and we will reign

  419. with him forever

  420. and ever.

  421. God says

  422. this is what

  423. I'm going to do

  424. with you in the future.

  425. This is why

  426. you can be confident

  427. that I'm with you

  428. in the present

  429. as you build

  430. the house of the Lord

  431. even if it looks

  432. small and shabby

  433. right now.

  434. God said

  435. I'm committed

  436. to building

  437. a glorious temple

  438. with my treasured

  439. possession

  440. my people

  441. from all the nations

  442. of the earth

  443. for all eternity.

  444. So if you're making

  445. slow progress

  446. in your life

  447. as a Christian

  448. if you're discouraged

  449. by slow progress

  450. in the church

  451. in loving one another

  452. and building one another up

  453. in sharing

  454. the hope

  455. of Jesus Christ

  456. with our city

  457. and our world

  458. if you're discouraged

  459. by slow progress

  460. don't project

  461. your present circumstances

  462. onto the future

  463. and remain

  464. despondent

  465. and apathetic

  466. but listen to what

  467. God has promised

  468. to do

  469. for you

  470. through you

  471. to you

  472. with you

  473. let God's future promises

  474. shape your present experience

  475. and the New Testament

  476. says this too

  477. 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  478. he says

  479. beloved

  480. we are God's children now

  481. and what we will be

  482. has not yet appeared

  483. but we know

  484. that when he appears

  485. we shall be like him

  486. because we shall see him

  487. as he is

  488. and everyone

  489. who has this hope

  490. in him

  491. purifies themselves

  492. just as he

  493. is pure

  494. I urge the people

  495. be strong

  496. and work

  497. on the temple

  498. in Jerusalem

  499. because that temple

  500. was a physical sign

  501. of God's promise

  502. to one day

  503. fill his temple

  504. with glory and peace

  505. and as followers

  506. of Jesus

  507. our job is not

  508. to build a physical temple

  509. our job is to build up

  510. the people of God

  511. and even though

  512. that's sometimes

  513. a slow and difficult process

  514. it's all worth it

  515. because God has promised

  516. us a glorious future

  517. so God encourages us

  518. despite our slow progress

  519. in the present

  520. that's the first thing

  521. second

  522. we see that God

  523. encourages us

  524. despite our lingering

  525. defilements

  526. from the past

  527. this is verse 10

  528. through 19

  529. verse 10

  530. through 14

  531. Haggai had a dialogue

  532. with some of the priests

  533. it might seem confusing

  534. at first

  535. like some obscure

  536. bible trivia

  537. but the basic point

  538. is this

  539. contamination

  540. spreads

  541. purity

  542. doesn't

  543. if you have

  544. Ebola virus

  545. you are a danger

  546. to anyone

  547. that you come

  548. in close contact with

  549. if you are in good health

  550. unfortunately

  551. you can't pass that on

  552. just by touching

  553. someone else

  554. but the point

  555. is what he said

  556. in verse 14

  557. he says

  558. the people

  559. were spiritually

  560. contaminated

  561. they were polluted

  562. they were defiled

  563. they were unclean

  564. in their hearts

  565. and so everything

  566. they did

  567. was contaminated

  568. by their idolatry

  569. by their sin

  570. their work

  571. was contaminated

  572. their worship

  573. offerings

  574. were contaminated

  575. nothing they did

  576. was pure

  577. because their hearts

  578. weren't right

  579. with God

  580. it's the same thing

  581. he said in chapter 1

  582. he said

  583. your priorities

  584. are out of whack

  585. you've disobeyed

  586. God's command

  587. and to build a temple

  588. and it shows

  589. how little you care

  590. about him

  591. verse 15

  592. through 17

  593. he reminded them

  594. how their misplaced

  595. priorities

  596. has resulted

  597. in frustration

  598. and curse

  599. sent by God

  600. himself

  601. but then in verse 18

  602. and 19

  603. Haggai unexpectedly

  604. turns a corner

  605. he says

  606. consider

  607. from this day

  608. onward

  609. it's the same word

  610. that he used

  611. back in chapter 1

  612. when he said

  613. consider your ways

  614. consider your misplaced

  615. priorities

  616. consider how your life

  617. is not going well

  618. because your priorities

  619. are not right

  620. but then he says

  621. consider

  622. God's priorities

  623. consider from this day

  624. onward

  625. consider

  626. verse 19

  627. from this day on

  628. I will bless you

  629. it's a strike

  630. see

  631. the book of Haggai

  632. is not just about

  633. our priorities

  634. it's also about

  635. God's priorities

  636. and God is saying

  637. my priority

  638. is to bless

  639. you

  640. to care for you

  641. to restore you

  642. it's a striking

  643. transition

  644. in this section

  645. from confronting

  646. the people

  647. about how

  648. spiritually

  649. contaminated

  650. they are

  651. and how devastating

  652. the effects

  653. of that

  654. is

  655. to promising

  656. from this day

  657. on

  658. I will bless you

  659. they had begun

  660. rebuilding the temple

  661. they had begun

  662. responding in obedience

  663. to God's word

  664. but they were still

  665. dealing with

  666. the lingering

  667. pollution

  668. from their past

  669. can you identify

  670. with that

  671. are you haunted

  672. by lingering

  673. defilement

  674. from your past

  675. do you look back

  676. to a time

  677. when you were

  678. a slave

  679. to addiction

  680. deceiving

  681. and being deceived

  682. hated by others

  683. and hating

  684. one another

  685. being foolish

  686. and disobedient

  687. and led astray

  688. and even if you're

  689. not using anymore

  690. do you feel

  691. discouraged

  692. and defeated

  693. and despairing

  694. when you look

  695. at the wreckage

  696. caused by your

  697. past life

  698. or are you

  699. living in shame

  700. because

  701. you've defiled

  702. your body

  703. you've secretly

  704. indulged in behavior

  705. that you know

  706. is not pleasing

  707. to God

  708. and some days

  709. in your mind

  710. you may try

  711. to justify it

  712. other days

  713. you may try

  714. to forget

  715. about it

  716. but deep down

  717. you still feel

  718. dirty

  719. and when Paul

  720. says present

  721. your bodies

  722. as a living

  723. sacrifice

  724. holy and

  725. acceptable to

  726. God

  727. that seems

  728. like an

  729. impossible

  730. demand

  731. instead of

  732. a joyful

  733. response

  734. to God's

  735. liberating

  736. mercy

  737. friends if

  738. that's you

  739. if you're

  740. haunted by

  741. lingering

  742. defilement

  743. from the

  744. past

  745. there is

  746. good news

  747. for you

  748. the Bible

  749. says that

  750. Jesus Christ

  751. is the

  752. atoning

  753. sacrifice

  754. who has

  755. taken our

  756. sin and guilt

  757. and shame

  758. upon himself

  759. and carried

  760. it away

  761. in his

  762. death on the

  763. cross

  764. and now he

  765. stands as the

  766. risen and

  767. victorious Lord

  768. who promises to

  769. all who turn to

  770. him from this

  771. day forward

  772. I will bless you

  773. you see Jesus

  774. Christ is a

  775. rebuilder of

  776. broken lives

  777. he's the

  778. redeveloper

  779. who loves to

  780. buy boarded up

  781. houses in bad

  782. neighborhoods

  783. not so he can

  784. move far away

  785. and make lots of

  786. money by renting

  787. out substandard

  788. apartments as an

  789. absentee landlord

  790. but so he can

  791. move in

  792. and renovate

  793. them personally

  794. and reside in

  795. them himself

  796. and shine light

  797. into the whole

  798. neighborhood

  799. as a result

  800. that's what he's

  801. done

  802. with you

  803. and me

  804. with anyone

  805. who turns to

  806. Jesus in

  807. faith

  808. he's bought

  809. us

  810. with his

  811. very own

  812. blood

  813. he's come to

  814. live in us

  815. by his spirit

  816. personally

  817. so that we

  818. might be

  819. channels of

  820. his blessing

  821. to the world

  822. and so that we

  823. might be part

  824. of the eternal

  825. city

  826. that he is

  827. building

  828. yes

  829. the road ahead

  830. may be long

  831. you may still

  832. be reaping

  833. painful results

  834. of what you

  835. have sown

  836. in the past

  837. Haggai

  838. acknowledged this

  839. verse 19

  840. he was speaking

  841. exactly three

  842. months

  843. after they

  844. started rebuilding

  845. the temple

  846. on the 24th

  847. day of the

  848. ninth month

  849. and he said

  850. is the seed

  851. in the barn

  852. yet

  853. none of your

  854. trees have

  855. yielded anything

  856. in other words

  857. the people

  858. had obeyed

  859. God for three

  860. months

  861. and on the

  862. outside

  863. nothing seemed

  864. to have got

  865. better in their

  866. life

  867. that Haggai

  868. said just

  869. wait

  870. you see

  871. Haggai

  872. was speaking

  873. in December

  874. the ninth

  875. month

  876. of the

  877. Israelite

  878. calendar

  879. and in the

  880. agricultural

  881. rhythm of

  882. ancient Israel

  883. they would

  884. sow the seed

  885. for the

  886. following year

  887. in October

  888. and November

  889. after the

  890. harvest in

  891. August and

  892. September

  893. and from

  894. December

  895. through February

  896. they were the

  897. cold months

  898. and the seed

  899. would lie

  900. dormant in

  901. the ground

  902. and only in

  903. March and

  904. April and

  905. after that

  906. would they

  907. see the

  908. result

  909. Haggai was

  910. saying just

  911. wait God

  912. is determined

  913. to bless you

  914. and a plentiful

  915. harvest is to

  916. come

  917. the apostle Paul

  918. says the same

  919. thing in Galatians

  920. he says if we

  921. sow to the

  922. spirit we

  923. will from the

  924. spirit reap

  925. eternal life

  926. he says so

  927. let us not

  928. become weary

  929. in doing

  930. good for

  931. in due

  932. season we

  933. will reap

  934. a harvest of

  935. holiness if

  936. we do not

  937. give up

  938. see God

  939. encourages us

  940. despite our

  941. slow progress

  942. in the present

  943. despite our

  944. lingering defilements

  945. from the past

  946. and finally God

  947. encourages us

  948. despite our

  949. dim prospects

  950. for the future

  951. this is the end

  952. of the chapter

  953. verses 20

  954. through 23

  955. Haggai concludes

  956. with a word to

  957. Zerubbabel

  958. who was the

  959. governor of

  960. Judah

  961. and Zerubbabel

  962. had a glorious

  963. lineage in the

  964. past he was

  965. descended from

  966. King David

  967. the grandson

  968. of King

  969. Jehoiachin

  970. one of the

  971. last kings of

  972. Israel he had

  973. survived the

  974. Babylonian exile

  975. but his

  976. personal prospects

  977. for the future

  978. would have seemed

  979. dim

  980. he was not the

  981. king of an

  982. independent nation

  983. he was the

  984. governor

  985. of a minor

  986. outlying

  987. province in

  988. the Persian

  989. empire

  990. he had no

  991. empire to

  992. rule

  993. no palace

  994. to reign

  995. from

  996. no fortified

  997. city to

  998. defend

  999. he was

  1000. responsible for

  1001. governing a

  1002. bunch of

  1003. refugees

  1004. and rural

  1005. poor people

  1006. who were

  1007. periodically harassed

  1008. by their

  1009. northern neighbors

  1010. and he was

  1011. subject at any

  1012. time to the

  1013. shifting demands

  1014. of his Persian

  1015. superiors

  1016. it wasn't

  1017. exactly an

  1018. enviable job

  1019. but Haggai

  1020. spoke his

  1021. final words

  1022. directly to

  1023. this man

  1024. verses 21

  1025. and 22

  1026. he says

  1027. to Rebabel

  1028. I want you

  1029. to know

  1030. that I'm

  1031. going to

  1032. bring judgment

  1033. on this

  1034. wicked world

  1035. he uses

  1036. the same

  1037. language

  1038. that was

  1039. used back

  1040. in the

  1041. exodus

  1042. about when

  1043. Pharaoh and

  1044. his armies

  1045. were and

  1046. their horses

  1047. and chariots

  1048. and riders

  1049. were pursuing

  1050. the Israelites

  1051. to capture

  1052. them and

  1053. enslave

  1054. them

  1055. and they

  1056. were drowned

  1057. in the

  1058. Red Sea

  1059. God says

  1060. I will bring

  1061. judgment

  1062. on this

  1063. wicked world

  1064. but he

  1065. said

  1066. verse 23

  1067. on that

  1068. day

  1069. I will

  1070. take you

  1071. my servant

  1072. and make you

  1073. like a signet

  1074. ring for I

  1075. have chosen

  1076. you

  1077. he says

  1078. to Rebabel

  1079. your personal

  1080. prospects for

  1081. the future

  1082. may look

  1083. dim

  1084. but in

  1085. God's

  1086. great

  1087. redemptive

  1088. plan

  1089. you have

  1090. a glorious

  1091. destiny

  1092. just like

  1093. I took

  1094. David

  1095. from the

  1096. humble

  1097. obscure

  1098. task of

  1099. tending

  1100. sheep

  1101. in the

  1102. middle

  1103. of

  1104. nowhere

  1105. to become

  1106. a great

  1107. king

  1108. of

  1109. Israel

  1110. I

  1111. will

  1112. take

  1113. you

  1114. as

  1115. my

  1116. own

  1117. just

  1118. like

  1119. I

  1120. called

  1121. David

  1122. my

  1123. servant

  1124. you

  1125. too

  1126. will

  1127. be

  1128. my

  1129. servant

  1130. I

  1131. will

  1132. make

  1133. you

  1134. like

  1135. a

  1136. signet

  1137. ring

  1138. for I

  1139. have

  1140. chosen

  1141. you

  1142. a

  1143. signet

  1144. ring

  1145. bore

  1146. the

  1147. owner's

  1148. name

  1149. and

  1150. mark

  1151. it

  1152. signified

  1153. a

  1154. close

  1155. relationship

  1156. even a

  1157. bestowal

  1158. of the

  1159. owner's

  1160. authority

  1161. two

  1162. generations

  1163. back

  1164. the prophet

  1165. Jeremiah

  1166. had

  1167. pronounced

  1168. God's

  1169. judgment

  1170. on

  1171. Zerubbabel's

  1172. grandfather

  1173. Jehoiachin

  1174. for his

  1175. wickedness

  1176. and

  1177. Jeremiah

  1178. said

  1179. though

  1180. Jehoiachin

  1181. were the

  1182. signet ring

  1183. on my

  1184. right hand

  1185. I would

  1186. tear you

  1187. off

  1188. and

  1189. give you

  1190. into

  1191. the

  1192. hand

  1193. of

  1194. those

  1195. who

  1196. seek

  1197. your

  1198. life

  1199. Jehoiachin

  1200. was

  1201. removed

  1202. from his

  1203. position

  1204. of

  1205. authority

  1206. and

  1207. taken

  1208. into

  1209. exile

  1210. but

  1211. here

  1212. Haggai

  1213. says

  1214. that

  1215. judgment

  1216. is now

  1217. reversed

  1218. the

  1219. exile

  1220. was

  1221. God's

  1222. judgment

  1223. on the

  1224. wicked

  1225. kings

  1226. and the

  1227. rebellious

  1228. people

  1229. of

  1230. Israel

  1231. but

  1232. it

  1233. was

  1234. a

  1235. temporary

  1236. judgment

  1237. and

  1238. not

  1239. a

  1240. final

  1241. one

  1242. in

  1243. other

  1244. words

  1245. he's

  1246. saying

  1247. God's

  1248. not

  1249. done

  1250. with

  1251. you

  1252. yet

  1253. despite

  1254. appearances

  1255. I'm

  1256. not

  1257. done

  1258. with

  1259. the

  1260. royal

  1261. line

  1262. of

  1263. David

  1264. because

  1265. I

  1266. promised

  1267. to

  1268. him

  1269. long

  1270. ago

  1271. that

  1272. his

  1273. throne

  1274. would

  1275. be

  1276. established

  1277. forever

  1278. and

  1279. I

  1280. don't

  1281. go back

  1282. on my

  1283. promises

  1284. even if

  1285. it appears

  1286. that I

  1291. now

  1292. Zerubbabel

  1293. didn't

  1294. become

  1295. king

  1296. in fact

  1297. we're

  1406. in

  1410. maybe

  1411. you're

  1412. facing

  1425. a

  1429. in

  1430. Jesus

  1431. Christ

  1432. God

  1433. says

  1434. I've

  1435. chosen

  1436. you

  1437. to

  1438. be

  1439. my

  1440. servant

  1441. you're

  1442. precious

  1443. to

  1444. me

  1445. and

  1446. I

  1447. love

  1448. you

  1449. I've

  1450. placed

  1451. my

  1464. the

  1465. word

  1466. of

  1467. the

  1468. Lord

  1469. of

  1470. hosts

  1471. so

  1472. to

  1473. begin

  1474. this

  1475. new

  1476. year

  1477. brothers

  1478. and

  1480. let

  1481. us

  1482. be

  1483. encouraged

  1484. be

  1485. encouraged

  1486. despite

  1487. slow

  1488. progress

  1489. in the

  1490. present

  1491. be

  1498. be

  1499. encouraged

  1500. despite

  1501. dim

  1502. prospects

  1503. for the

  1504. future

  1505. because

  1506. God

  1507. is

  1508. with

  1509. us

  1510. and

  1511. we

  1512. have

  1513. a

  1514. glorious

  1515. destiny

  1516. in

  1517. Jesus

  1518. Christ

  1519. let's

  1520. pray

  1521. a

  1522. prayer

  1523. for the

  1524. new

  1525. year

  1526. oh

  1527. Lord

  1528. length

  1529. of

  1530. days

  1531. does

  1532. not

  1533. profit

  1534. me

  1535. except

  1536. the

  1537. days

  1538. are

  1539. passed

  1540. in

  1541. your

  1542. presence

  1543. in

  1544. your

  1545. service

  1546. to

  1547. your

  1548. glory

  1549. give

  1550. me

  1551. your

  1552. grace

  1553. that

  1554. goes

  1555. before

  1556. me

  1557. that

  1558. follows

  1559. me

  1560. that

  1561. guides

  1562. sustains

  1563. sanctifies

  1564. and helps

  1565. me

  1566. every

  1567. hour

  1568. that I

  1569. might not

  1570. live one

  1571. moment apart

  1572. from you

  1573. but may

  1574. rely on

  1575. your

  1576. spirit

  1577. to supply

  1578. every

  1579. thought

  1580. speak

  1581. in every

  1582. word

  1583. direct

  1584. every

  1585. step

  1586. prosper

  1587. every

  1588. work

  1589. build

  1590. up

  1591. every

  1592. mustard

  1593. seed

  1594. of

  1595. faith

  1596. and give

  1597. me a

  1598. desire

  1599. to show

  1600. forth

  1601. your

  1602. praise

  1603. and testify

  1604. your

  1605. love

  1606. and advance

  1607. your

  1608. kingdom

  1609. I launch

  1610. my boat

  1611. on the

  1612. unknown

  1613. waters

  1614. of this

  1615. year

  1616. with you

  1617. oh

  1618. father

  1619. as my

  1620. harbor

  1621. with you

  1622. oh

  1623. son

  1624. as my

  1625. helm

  1626. with you

  1627. oh

  1628. holy

  1629. spirit

  1630. filling

  1631. my

  1632. sails

  1633. guide me

  1634. to heaven

  1635. with my

  1636. lamp

  1637. burning

  1638. my ear

  1639. open to

  1640. your call

  1641. my heart

  1642. full of

  1643. love

  1644. my soul

  1645. free

  1646. give me

  1647. your grace

  1648. to sanctify

  1649. me

  1650. your comforts

  1651. to cheer

  1652. your wisdom

  1653. to teach

  1654. your right

  1655. hand to

  1656. guide

  1657. your counsel

  1658. to instruct

  1659. your law

  1660. to judge

  1661. your presence

  1662. to stabilize

  1663. may your fear

  1664. be my awe

  1665. and your triumphs

  1666. my joy

  1667. amen
