  1. A series in this book, and we'll be continuing for a while in our evening service

  2. looking at the book of 1 Samuel and what it has to teach us for today.

  3. So let me read chapter 8, 1 Samuel chapter 8, and then we'll dig into it together.

    1 Samuel 8 chapter mention

  4. 1 Samuel chapter 8, when Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel.

    1 Samuel 8 chapter mention

  5. The name of his firstborn son was Joel, the name of his second Abijah, they were judges

  6. in Beersheba.

  7. Yet his sons did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after Gain.

  8. They took bribes and perverted justice.

  9. Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him,

  10. Behold, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways.

  11. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.

  12. But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, Give us a king to judge us.

  13. Samuel prayed to the Lord, and the Lord said to Samuel, Obey the voice of the people in

  14. all that they say to you.

  15. For they haven't rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

  16. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of

  17. Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing also to you.

  18. Now then, obey their voice.

  19. Only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.

  20. So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who are asking for a king from him.

  21. He said, These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you.

  22. He will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to

  23. run before his chariots.

  24. And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties,

  25. some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest and to make his implements of war

  26. and the equipment of his chariots.

  27. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.

  28. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants.

  29. He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants.

  30. He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men and your donkeys

  31. and put them to his work.

  32. He will take the tenth of your flocks and you shall be his slaves.

  33. And in that day you will cry out because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves.

  34. But the Lord will not answer you in that day.

  35. But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel and they said,

  36. No, but there shall be a king over us that we also may be like all the nations and that our king may judge us

  37. and go out before us and fight our battles.

  38. When Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the Lord.

  39. And the Lord said to Samuel, Obey their voice and make them a king.

  40. Samuel then said to the men of Israel, Go every man to his city.

  41. A long time ago, an unknown soldier wrote the following.

  42. I asked God for strength that I might achieve.

  43. I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.

  44. I asked for health that I might do greater things.

  45. I was given infirmity that I might do better things.

  46. I asked for riches that I might be happy.

  47. I was given poverty that I might be wise.

  48. I asked for power that I might have the praise of men.

  49. I was given weakness that I might feel my need for God.

  50. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life.

  51. I was given life that I might enjoy all things.

  52. I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I hoped for.

  53. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.

  54. I am among all men most richly blessed.

  55. Very often there's a difference between what we want and what we need.

  56. In tonight's passage, we see a group of people facing a national crisis.

  57. Facing a real problem.

  58. And demanding what they wanted.

  59. What they thought that they needed.

  60. And then we see God through the prophet Samuel warning them that what they think they need.

  61. What they were saying.

  62. What they really wanted.

  63. Wasn't really what they needed.

  64. Now we'll look at this passage in three parts.

  65. We'll look at first, the problem they were facing.

  66. Second, the demand.

  67. For what they wanted.

  68. And third, God's provision in the long run of what they really needed.

  69. So first, their problem.

  70. Just to set a little bit of the background in this book of Samuel.

  71. So far in the first seven chapters, we've seen God raising up Samuel to lead the people of Israel in a dark time.

  72. The book of Samuel begins at one of the low points of Israel's history.

  73. It was a time when the leaders were corrupt.

  74. When their enemies were a constant threat.

  75. When they were dissolving at times into civil war.

  76. Spiritually speaking, it was a time of approaching darkness.

  77. And increasing chaos.

  78. And ominous silence.

  79. And God raised up Samuel as a prophet.

  80. To speak his word into the silence.

  81. And to bring order into the chaos.

  82. And to shine light into the darkness.

  83. And in chapter seven, the last chapter, God used Samuel to deliver the people from the enemies who were threatening them.

  84. The Philistines.

  85. And to judge the people with wisdom.

  86. And fairness.

  87. But the problem we see here in verses one through three.

  88. Samuel's getting old.

  89. And his sons didn't walk in his ways.

  90. Samuel loved God.

  91. And he loved the people.

  92. And so his leadership resulted in stability.

  93. His sons loved money.

  94. And they loved themselves.

  95. And the result was instability.

  96. And chaos.

  97. The future didn't look good.

  98. For the people of Israel.

  99. And it's a pattern, interestingly, that happens multiple times in this book of Samuel.

  100. That God-fearing, a God-fearing generation is then succeeded by a self-centered generation.

  101. So Eli the priest knew the Lord.

  102. His sons didn't.

  103. And his sons used their authority in the priesthood for their own gain and their own benefit.

  104. Samuel judged wisely and impartially.

  105. His sons took bribes.

  106. And sought after dishonest gain.

  107. David would later become the greatest king of Israel.

  108. But then his sons ended up literally killing each other.

  109. And you might ask, how does that happen?

  110. How does one generation, parents who love God, how are they succeeded by people who could care less?

  111. It shouldn't be that way.

  112. Now the Bible doesn't tell us exactly how that happened.

  113. But it does say that it happened.

  114. And sometimes it still happens.

  115. Now Samuel wasn't directly responsible for the selfish behavior, self-serving behavior of his adult children.

  116. But what he was responsible for was he put his sons in leadership positions.

  117. And he didn't really hold them accountable.

  118. Verse 1 says, when Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel.

  119. But if you read the book of Judges, which is sort of the background of the book of Samuel, Samuel actually didn't have to do that.

  120. The office of judge was not a hereditary office that was supposed to be passed on from father to son.

  121. From parent to child.

  122. Right?

  123. In fact, in Judges 8, the men of Israel came to Gideon, one of the judges, and they said, rule over us.

  124. You and your son and your grandson.

  125. Set up a dynasty.

  126. And Gideon said, no.

  127. I won't rule over you.

  128. Nor will my son rule over you.

  129. The Lord will rule over you.

  130. So Samuel put his sons in positions of spiritual leadership, but they failed to live up to their responsibility.

  131. And he didn't act decisively.

  132. Now, he did put them down in Beersheba.

  133. Now, that was in the southern, it was sort of the remote southern part of the country.

  134. So he sort of put them off in a remote place, maybe to limit their influence.

  135. But the problem was they weren't fit to lead anywhere.

  136. Not in the remote part of the country, not in the central part of the country where Samuel was.

  137. And putting them there only contained the problem temporarily.

  138. It didn't actually solve it.

  139. You know, one of the biggest challenges for every generation is passing on the responsibility for spiritual leadership to the next generation.

  140. So in the New Testament, 2 Timothy 2.2, Paul says to Timothy,

  141. What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.

  142. And along with teaching others, Paul talks about setting an example for others.

  143. So if you're in a position of Christian leadership, whether that's leading a Bible study for other college students,

  144. or whether that's being an elder or a deacon in a church, or whatever it might be, being a parent,

  145. one of the most important tasks that you're called to, is to train up other people who love God, who can lead alongside you,

  146. and then who you can eventually pass on your responsibility to.

  147. Because one day, like Samuel, you'll grow old.

  148. And you won't be, or you might have to move out of town.

  149. Or for whatever reason, you won't be able to be that leader anymore, and you'll have to find someone else to succeed you.

  150. And this is where many otherwise godly Christian leaders have failed.

  151. Many times through the years.

  152. Either they haven't been willing to share leadership at all,

  153. and so, when they finally die, their whole organization, their whole ministry falls apart,

  154. because they don't let anyone else have,

  155. they don't let anyone else into that leadership circle,

  156. or, they're not careful about who they invite to lead with them,

  157. or who they pass on the leadership to,

  158. and it goes downhill.

  159. So this is a warning.

  160. That we see.

  161. And this is the problem that the people were facing.

  162. And so the elders, what we see is the elders of Israel,

  163. they recognize this problem, rightly,

  164. but then the second thing we see is what they think they need.

  165. They come to Samuel, and say,

  166. here's what we want.

  167. Verse 4.

  168. Or verse 5.

  169. They say,

  170. Behold, you are old, and your sons don't walk in your ways.

  171. Now appoint for us a king,

  172. to judge us like all the nations.

  173. Now just as a background,

  174. there hadn't been a king in Israel so far.

  175. So the people of Israel had been led by different judges,

  176. who were raised up sort of one by one,

  177. generation by generation, person by person,

  178. that God raised up at different times to lead the people of Israel.

  179. And the people say,

  180. enough of this judge stuff.

  181. Give us a king.

  182. Give us a dynasty.

  183. Now verse 6 says,

  184. Samuel was immediately displeased.

  185. On the one hand,

  186. he probably felt personally offended.

  187. Because he had been a judge.

  188. And he had,

  189. he probably felt like,

  190. man, like,

  191. you're coming to me and saying,

  192. my replacements aren't doing well,

  193. and we need to restructure.

  194. And I'm at the end of my career path.

  195. Facing the end of his life,

  196. felt like they were criticizing his leadership.

  197. But God says more than that,

  198. it's not just about them criticizing you,

  199. it's about them rejecting me.

  200. God said,

  201. what's really behind their request

  202. is not them rejecting you as a person,

  203. it's them rejecting me.

  204. And,

  205. and clinging on to

  206. other things.

  207. Other gods instead.

  208. You see,

  209. their request for a king,

  210. it wasn't wrong in principle.

  211. In fact,

  212. God has,

  213. God had always planned

  214. to one day establish a king in Israel

  215. and carry out his purposes through a king.

  216. So even before this place in the Bible,

  217. there had been promises.

  218. In Genesis 49,

  219. God had promised

  220. that one day a ruler would arise

  221. from the tribe of Judah

  222. who all the nations would obey.

  223. And in the book of Deuteronomy,

  224. God had said to the people of Israel,

  225. when you go into the land

  226. and you say,

  227. I want to have a king

  228. like all the nations around me,

  229. he says,

  230. you may indeed set a king over you

  231. whom the Lord your God will choose.

  232. It wasn't wrong in principle

  233. to have a king.

  234. What was wrong?

  235. You might ask

  236. with their request.

  237. The problem wasn't their request,

  238. it was their attitude.

  239. And we see three indications

  240. of what was wrong with their attitude.

  241. The first indication we see

  242. is they demanded from Samuel

  243. instead of depending on God.

  244. You know,

  245. when we face real problems,

  246. real dangers,

  247. real insecurities,

  248. if we don't cry out to God

  249. in prayer and dependence on Him,

  250. we'll often turn to other people

  251. and start demanding

  252. insistently from them.

  253. Notice what Samuel did.

  254. Verse 6.

  255. He heard the people's request.

  256. The first thing he does,

  257. he prayed to the Lord.

  258. Even before he responded to them,

  259. he prayed to God.

  260. And then again,

  261. verse 21.

  262. He heard all the words of the people

  263. and it says he repeated them

  264. in the ears of the Lord.

  265. He went right to God

  266. and said,

  267. here's what they're saying.

  268. What do I do with this?

  269. But by contrast,

  270. the other leaders of Israel

  271. don't pray at all.

  272. Now interestingly,

  273. if you look back

  274. just in the last chapter,

  275. in chapter 7,

  276. three times,

  277. three times,

  278. the leaders of Israel pray.

  279. Chapter 7,

  280. verse 3 says,

  281. all the house of Israel

  282. lamented after the Lord.

  283. Chapter 7,

  284. verse 6,

  285. they gathered at Mizpah

  286. and fasted and said,

  287. we have sinned against the Lord.

  288. Chapter 7,

  289. verse 8,

  290. the people came to Samuel

  291. and asked him,

  292. don't stop crying out to the Lord

  293. on our behalf.

  294. And Samuel cried out to the Lord

  295. for them

  296. and God answered him.

  297. But here in chapter 8,

  298. they don't ask Samuel

  299. to pray for them.

  300. They don't pray to God themselves.

  301. They just come to Samuel

  302. and they demand.

  303. They say,

  304. give us a king.

  305. Samuel,

  306. you can solve our problems.

  307. Has someone ever come to you like that?

  308. You can solve all my problems.

  309. This is what you need to do.

  310. Now.

  311. And if you do that,

  312. they're going to come to you again.

  313. A week later.

  314. And say,

  315. this is what I need you to do.

  316. And only you can do it.

  317. It's not a fun place to be in.

  318. You see,

  319. when we don't come before God

  320. and ask him for what we need,

  321. we can sometimes end up making

  322. excessive demands

  323. from other people.

  324. So that's the first issue

  325. with their attitude.

  326. They demanded from Samuel

  327. instead of depending on God.

  328. The second issue with their attitude

  329. is that they spoke,

  330. but they refused to listen.

  331. In fact,

  332. Samuel listened to them,

  333. but they didn't listen to him.

  334. Three times,

  335. God said to Samuel,

  336. obey the voice of the people.

  337. And that word obey

  338. could also be translated

  339. something like,

  340. listen carefully,

  341. or heed,

  342. or take to heart

  343. what they're saying,

  344. and respond appropriately to it.

  345. God said to Samuel,

  346. don't disregard what they're saying.

  347. Even though their motives are bad,

  348. listen to them.

  349. But the people didn't,

  350. and Samuel also listened

  351. to what God said

  352. in verse 7 through 9.

  353. But the people didn't want to listen.

  354. Even though Samuel was a prophet

  355. who spoke God's word,

  356. even though Samuel was a trusted,

  357. wiser, older man

  358. who had shown his trustworthiness

  359. throughout his life

  360. over and over,

  361. even though his words were reasonable

  362. and sensible,

  363. they didn't want to hear it.

  364. And do you notice

  365. that after Samuel gave them

  366. all his warnings,

  367. what the people said

  368. in verse 19 and 20,

  369. they just repeated

  370. what they had said before.

  371. They said,

  372. no,

  373. there shall be a king over us.

  374. They just become

  375. a broken record,

  376. and they keep repeating themselves

  377. and keep insisting

  378. on the same thing,

  379. louder and louder,

  380. over and over.

  381. Now the irony is,

  382. if you look at

  383. why they want a king,

  384. verse 19 and 20,

  385. they say,

  386. there shall be a king

  387. so that we may be

  388. like all the nations

  389. and that our king

  390. may judge us

  391. and go out before us

  392. and fight our battles.

  393. But if you look back

  394. at chapter 7,

  395. they had done

  396. exactly the opposite.

  397. They hadn't followed

  398. the pattern

  399. of all the other nations

  400. who were worshipping idols.

  401. They had served

  402. only the Lord.

  403. Chapter 7,

  404. verse 2.

  405. And then when they were

  406. attacked by the Philistines,

  407. it says,

  408. the Lord went out

  409. before them

  410. and the Lord

  411. fought on their behalf

  412. and delivered them

  413. from their enemies.

  414. And then the Lord

  415. provided Samuel

  416. to judge them wisely.

  417. You see,

  418. God had done

  419. everything

  420. that they wanted

  421. this king to do.

  422. God had already

  423. done it

  424. in the past

  425. for them.

  426. And God was willing

  427. to do it again.

  428. But they said,

  429. no,

  430. we want a king.

  431. And they didn't

  432. want to listen.

  433. They didn't want

  434. to listen to Samuel.

  435. They didn't want

  436. to listen to God.

  437. They just wanted

  438. to talk

  439. and repeat themselves

  440. over and over.

  441. The Bible says

  442. there's wisdom

  443. in being quick

  444. to listen

  445. and slow to speak.

  446. That's a question

  447. that all of us

  448. need to ask ourselves.

  449. Am I teachable?

  450. Will I listen

  451. and obey

  452. God's word

  453. even when it's not

  454. what I want to hear?

  455. Will I listen

  456. to older,

  457. wiser,

  458. trusted people

  459. who have shown

  460. their trustworthiness?

  461. Will I stop

  462. and reconsider

  463. if one of them

  464. comes to me

  465. and says,

  466. I'm not sure

  467. what you're doing

  468. is the best course

  469. of action.

  470. Are you open

  471. to reason?

  472. Or do you just

  473. dig in your heels

  474. and start repeating

  475. yourself over

  476. and over

  477. and louder

  478. and louder?

  479. So they demanded

  480. from Samuel

  481. instead of depending

  482. on God,

  483. they spoke

  484. but didn't listen.

  485. And the third thing,

  486. the third issue

  487. with their attitude

  488. was they latched

  489. onto a substitute

  490. instead of

  491. the source.

  492. Verse 8,

  493. the Lord said,

  494. ever since I brought

  495. them up out of Egypt,

  496. they've been forsaking me

  497. and serving other gods.

  498. They're doing

  499. the same thing now.

  500. God had delivered them

  501. because they were

  502. slaves in Egypt

  503. and God had

  504. brought them out

  505. and set them free

  506. and provided for them.

  507. And God says,

  508. what they've done

  509. in return

  510. is they've gone

  511. and latched on

  512. to these other things

  513. as substitutes

  514. for me.

  515. And here,

  516. it was just

  517. the king.

  518. The king became

  519. their god.

  520. The office

  521. or the ideal

  522. of a king

  523. had become

  524. in their mind

  525. the answer

  526. to all of their

  527. problems.

  528. They were just

  529. like the people

  530. back in chapter 4.

  531. A couple weeks ago

  532. we looked at chapter 4

  533. when they were

  534. defeated by the Philistines

  535. in battle.

  536. They said,

  537. let's bring the ark

  538. here

  539. so that the ark

  540. of God

  541. can save us

  542. from our enemies.

  543. And God said,

  544. no.

  545. The ark is meant

  546. to be a symbol

  547. of my presence

  548. with you,

  549. a sign

  550. and a reminder

  551. that I'm with you,

  552. but the ark

  553. isn't a magic box.

  554. I'm not in that

  555. magic box.

  556. And you can't put me

  557. in that box.

  558. And it's not

  559. going to work

  560. if you think

  561. that that box

  562. is going to

  563. protect you.

  564. It can't replace

  565. who I am.

  566. And the people

  567. were doing

  568. the same thing here.

  569. They were

  570. latching on to

  571. not the ark

  572. but here

  573. a king

  574. as the answer

  575. to all their problems

  576. as a substitute

  577. for God.

  578. Is there something

  579. that you really,

  580. really want?

  581. Like the people.

  582. That it's become

  583. a substitute

  584. for God

  585. in your heart

  586. or in your life.

  587. Maybe you're

  588. constantly looking

  589. to be

  590. in a relationship.

  591. And if someone

  592. else questions you

  593. and says,

  594. is this really

  595. the right time

  596. for you to pursue that?

  597. Or,

  598. is that person

  599. really,

  600. is this really

  601. a healthy relationship

  602. or is it,

  603. has it become

  604. codependent?

  605. Or are you really

  606. pointing one another

  607. towards,

  608. God?

  609. Or are you just

  610. sinking more deeply

  611. into each other?

  612. If people ask you

  613. those questions,

  614. you immediately

  615. become defensive

  616. and you say,

  617. no!

  618. I'm going to be

  619. in my relationship

  620. and don't you dare

  621. question me.

  622. Or maybe all your

  623. energies are

  624. focused on

  625. getting into a

  626. certain

  627. grad school program

  628. or landing a

  629. fellowship

  630. or getting a

  631. certain kind of

  632. job.

  633. And you think,

  634. once I get that,

  635. I'll have it

  636. made.

  637. And then I can

  638. worry about

  639. everything else

  640. in my life.

  641. But right now,

  642. that's what I'm

  643. focused on.

  644. You know,

  645. the ladder

  646. just keeps going

  647. up and up.

  648. And you think

  649. you see the top

  650. and then you get

  651. there and you

  652. realize there's a

  653. bunch of people

  654. further up.

  655. And even when you

  656. get to the top,

  657. then you have to

  658. worry about how

  659. long can you

  660. stay there.

  661. and if that's

  662. the one thing,

  663. if that's the one

  664. thing that you

  665. focus all your

  666. life around,

  667. you can never

  668. be completely

  669. satisfied.

  670. You can never be

  671. fully secure.

  672. No, none of

  673. these things are

  674. bad in themselves.

  675. Relationships

  676. are good.

  677. God meant us to

  678. be in community

  679. with each other.

  680. God provided

  681. marriage as a

  682. good thing.

  683. God calls us to

  684. pursue friendships

  685. in all kinds of

  686. different ways.

  687. God gives us the

  688. opportunity to work.

  689. That's a blessing

  690. from God.

  691. That's a good thing.

  692. It's worth pursuing.

  693. But when it

  694. becomes a substitute

  695. for God,

  696. when it becomes

  697. that one thing

  698. that defines you

  699. more than everything

  700. else,

  701. and that one thing

  702. that you're always

  703. thinking about,

  704. that's always in the

  705. back of your mind,

  706. and that's driving

  707. you,

  708. then it's become

  709. a substitute

  710. instead of the

  711. source.

  712. And Samuel warned

  713. the people.

  714. Substitutes end

  715. in slavery.

  716. Samuel said,

  717. you think this

  718. king is going to

  719. fix all your

  720. problems,

  721. but you don't

  722. realize he's

  723. going to create

  724. all kinds of

  725. new problems

  726. that you haven't

  727. even thought of.

  728. Notice what he

  729. says about what

  730. the king's going

  731. to do.

  732. Verse 10

  733. through 19.

  734. Verse 10

  735. through 18.

  736. He said,

  737. a king will

  738. take,

  739. take,

  740. take,

  741. take.

  742. He'll take

  743. your sons.

  744. He'll take

  745. your daughters.

  746. He'll take

  747. a 10%

  748. of your grain

  749. and the best

  750. of your fields

  751. and vineyards.

  752. He'll take

  753. from you

  754. and keep

  755. on taking.

  756. And he says,

  757. finally,

  758. you'll be his

  759. slaves.

  760. You'll be just

  761. like it was

  762. all the way

  763. back in Egypt,

  764. except this time

  765. you chose it

  766. for yourselves.

  767. others.

  768. And if a

  769. relationship

  770. or if work

  771. or whatever

  772. else,

  773. a good thing,

  774. if it becomes

  775. your God,

  776. it will just

  777. start to take

  778. and take

  779. and take

  780. and take

  781. until it

  782. leaves you dry

  783. and broken

  784. and you become

  785. a shell of who

  786. you once were.

  787. you've come

  788. to that place.

  789. Maybe you've

  790. been there.

  791. Maybe you are

  792. there.

  793. You've latched

  794. on to something,

  795. hoping to find

  796. life in it,

  797. thinking this is

  798. what I really,

  799. really want,

  800. and you've got

  801. it.

  802. And you end

  803. up in slavery.

  804. Maybe you lose

  805. it.

  806. And you feel

  807. like you don't

  808. have anything.

  809. And you cry

  810. out and you

  811. wonder if

  812. anybody will

  813. hear you.

  814. You know,

  815. there's good

  816. news in this

  817. passage.

  818. Samuel warned

  819. the people of

  820. what would

  821. happen.

  822. He warned

  823. them what you

  824. want isn't

  825. really what you

  826. need.

  827. You know,

  828. if you keep

  829. reading in the

  830. Bible, the

  831. good news is

  832. God doesn't

  833. just say no to

  834. them and leave

  835. it at that.

  836. He doesn't just

  837. give them what

  838. they want.

  839. Ultimately,

  840. God provides

  841. what we need.

  842. God told

  843. Samuel, listen,

  844. obey their

  845. voice and make

  846. them a king.

  847. Some ways it's

  848. surprising.

  849. With all the

  850. warnings about it,

  851. God seems to

  852. give in to their

  853. demand.

  854. But God had

  855. always planned to

  856. carry out his

  857. purposes through a

  858. king.

  859. And so God chose

  860. to work through

  861. their flawed and

  862. wrong motives for

  863. his ultimate good

  864. purposes.

  865. You know,

  866. sometimes God

  867. refuses to give

  868. us what we

  869. demand, what we

  870. want, out of his

  871. love for us.

  872. To protect us

  873. from getting

  874. entangled and

  875. enslaved in

  876. something that we

  877. latch onto too

  878. much.

  879. Sometimes God

  880. gives us what we

  881. ask for.

  882. He says, okay,

  883. this is what you

  884. want, I'll give it

  885. to you.

  886. And then I'll show

  887. you that that's not

  888. really what you

  889. need.

  890. And it's not really

  891. what's going to

  892. satisfy you in the

  893. end.

  894. And I'll let you

  895. have it because you

  896. so deeply want it.

  897. I'll let you have

  898. it.

  899. But in the end,

  900. I'll bring you to

  901. see that it's me

  902. that you really

  903. want.

  904. And it's me that

  905. you really need

  906. more than anything

  907. else.

  908. They got a king.

  909. But you know

  910. what?

  911. Their hopes that the

  912. king would save

  913. them and do

  914. everything for them

  915. and fix all their

  916. problems were

  917. disappointed over and

  918. over.

  919. If you read the rest

  920. of the Old Testament,

  921. many of the kings

  922. failed.

  923. They all fell

  924. short.

  925. They got what

  926. they wanted.

  927. And then they

  928. realized that what

  929. they wanted wasn't

  930. what would satisfy

  931. them deep down.

  932. But God didn't

  933. give up on them.

  934. And he doesn't

  935. give up on us.

  936. He always had a

  937. plan to give

  938. them what they

  939. really needed.

  940. And what they

  941. really needed was

  942. for the Lord

  943. himself to be

  944. their king.

  945. Not a king like

  946. all the kings of

  947. all the other

  948. nations who would

  949. take and

  950. take and take

  951. but a king like

  952. God himself

  953. who would give

  954. and give

  955. and give.

  956. And ultimately

  957. that's why God

  958. sent his one and

  959. only son Jesus

  960. Christ into the

  961. world.

  962. Not to come to

  963. us and take and

  964. take and take and

  965. demand

  966. but to give

  967. and give and

  968. give.

  969. all the way to

  970. the end.

  971. Jesus said the

  972. son of man

  973. referring to

  974. himself came

  975. not to be

  976. served but to

  977. serve and to

  978. give his life as

  979. a ransom for

  980. many.

  981. as we sung

  982. as we sung

  983. about how Jesus

  984. paid it all

  985. how he laid

  986. down his life

  987. on the cross

  988. he gave himself

  989. for us

  990. that's the kind

  991. of king

  992. that we really

  993. want

  994. that we really

  995. need

  996. a king

  997. a leader

  998. who deserves

  999. our full

  1000. loyalty and

  1001. allegiance

  1002. who is

  1003. sacrificially

  1004. committed to

  1005. us

  1006. even to the

  1007. point of

  1008. giving up

  1009. his own

  1010. life.

  1011. That's what

  1012. Jesus did.

  1013. That's why he

  1014. deserves our

  1015. full loyalty and

  1016. our full

  1017. allegiance

  1018. more than

  1019. anything else

  1020. because he's the

  1021. source.

  1022. He's not a

  1023. substitute

  1024. that's going to

  1025. end up in

  1026. slavery.

  1027. He's the

  1028. source

  1029. who gives us

  1030. life.

  1031. tonight we're

  1032. going to

  1033. celebrate

  1034. what we call

  1035. communion

  1036. which is

  1037. simply

  1038. reminding us

  1039. of the

  1040. sacrifice that

  1041. Jesus made

  1042. how he gave

  1043. his life

  1044. for us

  1045. so that

  1046. everyone

  1047. who turns

  1048. to him

  1049. and trusts

  1050. in him

  1051. and says

  1052. Jesus

  1053. I want

  1054. you

  1055. to be

  1056. my king

  1057. the promise

  1058. is that

  1059. everyone who

  1060. does that

  1061. receives

  1062. forgiveness

  1063. of all of

  1064. our sins

  1065. and life

  1066. now and

  1067. forever with

  1068. God.

  1069. So that's

  1070. what we come

  1071. to celebrate

  1072. and remember

  1073. that God

  1074. provided for

  1075. us what we

  1076. really really

  1077. needed

  1078. and he doesn't

  1079. always give us

  1080. what we think

  1081. we want

  1082. but he does

  1083. give us what

  1084. we need.

  1085. So as we

  1086. prepare to do

  1087. that let's

  1088. pray.

  1089. Lord

  1090. our hearts

  1091. are often

  1092. fickle

  1093. we want

  1094. all kinds

  1095. of things

  1096. and we

  1097. think we

  1098. know what

  1099. we need

  1100. but often

  1101. Lord

  1102. we are so

  1103. short sighted

  1104. and we see

  1105. all of the

  1106. potential

  1107. and none

  1108. of the

  1109. danger

  1110. and we

  1111. latch on

  1112. to good

  1113. things that

  1114. you've made

  1115. good gifts

  1116. from you

  1117. but we

  1118. neglect you.

  1119. Lord

  1120. forgive us.

  1121. I pray

  1122. that we

  1123. would

  1124. listen to

  1125. you

  1126. and receive

  1127. from you

  1128. and trust

  1129. in you

  1130. with all

  1131. our hearts.

  1132. Thank you

  1133. Lord that

  1134. you're a

  1135. king like

  1136. nobody else.

  1137. Lord you

  1138. didn't come

  1139. to take

  1140. and take

  1141. and take

  1142. because you

  1143. already had

  1144. everything.

  1145. Everything

  1146. was already

  1147. yours.

  1148. You came

  1149. to give.

  1150. You came

  1151. to give

  1152. your life

  1153. for us

  1154. and we

  1155. thank you

  1156. for that.

  1157. Help us

  1158. be shaped

  1159. by what

  1160. you've done

  1161. for us.

  1162. In Jesus

  1163. name we

  1164. pray.

  1165. Amen.
