  1. Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and you are going there again?

  2. Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day?

  3. If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

  4. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.

  5. After saying these things, he said to them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,

  6. but I go to awaken him. The disciples said to him, Lord, if he's fallen asleep, he will recover.

  7. Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest and sleep.

  8. Then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus has died.

  9. And for your sake, I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe.

  10. But let us go to him. So Thomas, called the twin, said to his fellow disciples,

  11. Let us also go, that we may die with him.

  12. Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

  13. Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off,

  14. and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.

  15. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him.

  16. But Mary remained seated in the house.

  17. Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn't have died.

  18. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.

  19. Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again.

  20. Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.

  21. Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life.

  22. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.

  23. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

  24. Do you believe this?

  25. She said to him, Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ,

  26. the Son of God who is coming into the world.

  27. When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private,

  28. The teacher is here and is calling for you.

  29. And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.

  30. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.

  31. When the Jews, who were with her in the house, consoling her,

  32. saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her,

  33. supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

  34. Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him,

  35. she fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  36. When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her also weeping,

  37. he was deeply moved in spirit and greatly troubled.

  38. And he said, Where have you laid him?

  39. They said to him, Lord, come and see.

  40. Jesus wept.

  41. So the Jews said, See how he loved him?

  42. But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?

  43. Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb.

  44. It was a cave and a stone lay against it.

  45. Jesus said, Take away the stone.

  46. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him,

  47. Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.

  48. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?

  49. So they took away the stone, and Jesus lifted up his eyes and said,

  50. Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

  51. I knew that you always hear me.

  52. But I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.

  53. When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice,

  54. Lazarus, come out!

  55. The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips,

  56. and his face wrapped with a cloth.

  57. Jesus said to them, Unbind him and let him go.

  58. Many of the Jews, therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him.

  59. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

  60. So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said,

  61. What are we to do?

  62. For this man performs many signs.

  63. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him,

  64. and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.

  65. But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to him,

  66. You know nothing at all.

  67. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people,

  68. not that the whole nation should perish.

  69. He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year,

  70. he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

  71. and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one,

  72. the children of God who are scattered abroad.

  73. So from that day on, they made plans to put him to death.

  74. John 11.

  75. All flesh is grass,

  76. and all its beauty,

  77. like the flower of the field.

  78. The grass withers,

  79. the flower fades and falls.

  80. Surely, the people are grass.

  81. The grass withers,

  82. the flower fades and falls.

  83. Even so,

  84. death comes upon us

  85. with steady and unfailing step,

  86. and will gather us all up.

  87. We know it infallibly comes,

  88. but at times,

  89. it seems to come upon some

  90. a pace,

  91. with fleeter foot

  92. in speedier rendezvous,

  93. and the flower falls

  94. before it is faded.

  95. It withers and dies

  96. while yet in bloom,

  97. with still so much in the bud.

  98. It's at times like these

  99. when our hearts

  100. are especially anguished,

  101. and from the turmoil

  102. of our tortured hearts

  103. comes the voiced feeling,

  104. how tragic.

  105. This is not the way

  106. it should be.

  107. There is a sense

  108. that the fabric

  109. of so many strands

  110. that makes life good,

  111. the heart glad,

  112. mouths full of laughter,

  113. have been savagely torn into

  114. and left frayed beyond repair.

  115. Death,

  116. the terrible tearing,

  117. the jarring,

  118. the jarring full stop

  119. in the punctuation of life

  120. that comes,

  121. it would sometimes seem,

  122. mid-sentence.

  123. It leaves us numb,

  124. stupefied,

  125. hollowed out.

  126. Is this not something

  127. of what we feel

  128. when we grow

  129. in our visceral verdict?

  130. What a tragedy.

  131. There seems a senselessness to it.

  132. There seems to be no point.

  133. Well, I want to bring

  134. some words of Jesus

  135. into this sorrow

  136. and hollowness we feel,

  137. into the confusion,

  138. into the pain.

  139. I want to take this account

  140. of Jesus among the mourners

  141. that Rick has just read.

  142. here at the death of Lazarus,

  143. as a window

  144. into his heart

  145. and mind

  146. when he stands

  147. before death.

  148. And as an invitation,

  149. even a summons,

  150. not perhaps so much

  151. to see death

  152. entirely differently

  153. than we feel it to be,

  154. it remains a great terror

  155. and a tearing.

  156. but to have this feeling

  157. mingled with something more,

  158. mingled with something

  159. of the way

  160. Jesus looked upon it.

  161. Friends,

  162. death,

  163. especially for those

  164. to whom it falls

  165. the closest,

  166. can make us feel raw.

  167. and for such a one,

  168. words intended to console

  169. can easily chafe.

  170. The very effort

  171. to bind up

  172. can bruise

  173. in such a sober

  174. and sacred season.

  175. I can feel my heart

  176. to be one of simply

  177. sharing and shedding tears

  178. with you.

  179. But Jesus tells us

  180. that he will not

  181. break the bruised reed.

  182. even the most tender

  183. and sorrowing among us

  184. is safe with him.

  185. So it's well and right

  186. that we go to him

  187. and seek to see

  188. and hear him

  189. amidst our sorrow.

  190. Let's pray.

  191. Come among us, Jesus.

  192. speak into the heaviness

  193. of our hearts

  194. and by your tender

  195. living spirit

  196. meet us

  197. as you alone can do.

  198. Our good

  199. and gentle shepherd,

  200. the God of all comfort,

  201. the one alone

  202. who is mighty to save.

  203. Amen.

  204. Well, I want,

  205. as I have said,

  206. to open for us

  207. some windows

  208. into Jesus' thoughts

  209. and heart

  210. as he stands

  211. before death.

  212. The first

  213. is found

  214. in his opening words.

  215. The news

  216. has come

  217. of Lazarus'

  218. illness

  219. with the implicit

  220. plea

  221. to come

  222. and heal him

  223. lest he die.

  224. There in verse 3.

  225. Lord,

  226. he whom you love

  227. is ill.

  228. And to this,

  229. Jesus responds,

  230. verse 4,

  231. this illness

  232. does not lead

  233. to death.

  234. Now, on the surface,

  235. this might,

  236. he might seem to be

  237. saying,

  238. oh, don't worry.

  239. He won't die.

  240. But are we

  241. to presume

  242. that Jesus

  243. here gives

  244. a forecast

  245. that would

  246. prove mistaken?

  247. I mean,

  248. after all,

  249. Lazarus' sickness

  250. would indeed

  251. lead to death.

  252. No.

  253. No,

  254. Jesus clearly

  255. realizes this.

  256. And when pressed

  257. for clarification,

  258. states plainly

  259. in verse 14,

  260. Lazarus

  261. is dead.

  262. He's saying

  263. something else.

  264. He's not

  265. speaking

  266. of the immediate

  267. outcome

  268. of the illness.

  269. He's going

  270. deeper

  271. and reflecting

  272. upon

  273. the purpose.

  274. What is the

  275. point

  276. of Lazarus'

  277. illness?

  278. What is it

  279. for?

  280. We might

  281. render the words

  282. this sickness

  283. is not

  284. with a view

  285. to death.

  286. So,

  287. Jesus

  288. raises

  289. his sights

  290. higher,

  291. further.

  292. He sees

  293. beyond

  294. Lazarus'

  295. dying

  296. to an

  297. ultimate

  298. issue.

  299. Death

  300. is not

  301. the final

  302. thing

  303. to come

  304. out of

  305. this

  306. fatal

  307. illness.

  308. So,

  309. when Jesus

  310. saw beyond

  311. death,

  312. further

  313. than that

  314. immediate

  315. outcome,

  316. what did

  317. he see?

  318. What was

  319. the point

  320. of Lazarus'

  321. death?

  322. What was

  323. it for?

  324. If the

  325. view of

  326. Lazarus'

  327. death for

  328. Jesus

  329. didn't end

  330. with death,

  331. what did

  332. his view

  333. open to?

  334. the glory

  335. of God.

  336. Verse 4,

  337. this illness

  338. does not

  339. lead to

  340. death,

  341. it is

  342. for

  343. the glory

  344. of God.

  345. So,

  346. when Jesus

  347. looked at

  348. death,

  349. he saw

  350. further

  351. with

  352. elfin

  353. eye.

  354. Death

  355. is not

  356. the last

  357. word

  358. as to

  359. what this

  360. is about.

  361. The point

  362. is not

  363. the period

  364. at the

  365. end of

  366. death.

  367. The point

  368. is the

  369. glory of

  370. God.

  371. Oh,

  372. friends,

  373. if we

  374. would see

  375. death as

  376. Jesus did,

  377. we must

  378. raise our

  379. sights.

  380. Death

  381. is so

  382. dark

  383. and dense,

  384. it would

  385. seek to

  386. pull in

  387. our perspective

  388. like a

  389. black hole

  390. becoming its

  391. final resting

  392. place.

  393. But let's

  394. lift our

  395. eyes with

  396. Jesus and

  397. see more,

  398. for it

  399. will be a

  400. sight to

  401. behold,

  402. the glory

  403. of God.

  404. What do

  405. those words

  406. mean?

  407. The phrase

  408. crops up

  409. throughout the

  410. scriptures,

  411. and we

  412. even may

  413. use it

  414. ourselves on

  415. occasion.

  416. but for

  417. many its

  418. meaning

  419. remains

  420. vague.

  421. Glory of

  422. God.

  423. Think of

  424. it as

  425. the sum

  426. total

  427. of the

  428. splendidness

  429. of God,

  430. the dazzling

  431. array of

  432. his

  433. attributes,

  434. his

  435. unspeakable

  436. wisdom,

  437. beauty,

  438. goodness,

  439. love,

  440. love.

  441. Jesus is

  442. saying,

  443. Lazarus'

  444. death will

  445. be in

  446. some way

  447. a lens

  448. through which

  449. is displayed

  450. the glory

  451. of God,

  452. a prism

  453. through which

  454. the light

  455. of his

  456. beauty,

  457. wisdom,

  458. goodness,

  459. and love

  460. will be

  461. breathtakingly

  462. cast before

  463. our view.

  464. but not

  465. simply in

  466. the sense

  467. of a

  468. dazzling

  469. 4th of

  470. July

  471. fireworks

  472. display

  473. where we're

  474. bedazzled

  475. and we sing

  476. the star

  477. spangled

  478. banner

  479. and then

  480. go home.

  481. No.

  482. No,

  483. the display

  484. of his

  485. glory

  486. is the

  487. revelation

  488. of his

  489. person

  490. so ravishing

  491. that it

  492. draws us

  493. into the

  494. unspeakable

  495. raptures

  496. of his

  497. own

  498. self-delight

  499. within his

  500. own

  501. Trinitarian

  502. self.

  503. The glory

  504. of God

  505. gathers

  506. us

  507. into

  508. the

  509. dance

  510. of the

  511. divine

  512. joy

  513. within

  514. the

  515. Godhead.

  516. The glory

  517. of God

  518. displayed

  519. brings us

  520. to cry

  521. out

  522. in amazed

  523. wonder

  524. how good

  525. how wonderful

  526. how loving

  527. how gracious

  528. how wise

  529. is he

  530. and our

  531. hearts

  532. melt.

  533. And God

  534. can do

  535. even that

  536. gather

  537. us up

  538. into his

  539. own

  540. rapturous

  541. self-delight

  542. and melt

  543. our hearts

  544. through the

  545. death

  546. of a

  547. dearly

  548. loved

  549. one?

  550. Yes,

  551. he can.

  552. That's what

  553. the death

  554. of Lazarus

  555. is about?

  556. Yes,

  557. it is.

  558. Well,

  559. if that's

  560. what he's

  561. doing

  562. and if

  563. that's

  564. what it's

  565. about,

  566. it certainly

  567. isn't

  568. obvious.

  569. No.

  570. No,

  571. it seldom

  572. is.

  573. Indeed,

  574. it is

  575. hardly

  576. ever

  577. apparent

  578. how many

  579. things

  580. somehow

  581. glorify

  582. God,

  583. show his

  584. goodness

  585. and so

  586. show his

  587. goodness

  588. so much

  589. that our

  590. hearts are

  591. melted into

  592. loving

  593. attraction

  594. and bursting

  595. with joy.

  596. Usually,

  597. with things

  598. so horrible

  599. and heartbreaking,

  600. we can't

  601. imagine,

  602. even remotely,

  603. any good

  604. coming out

  605. of them.

  606. Least of all,

  607. anything gloriously

  608. good,

  609. it just

  610. looks all

  611. wrong,

  612. at least

  613. from our

  614. perspective,

  615. from our

  616. capacity to

  617. imagine

  618. good.

  619. We don't

  620. cry out

  621. in enraptured

  622. wonder,

  623. how beautiful.

  624. We rather

  625. cry out

  626. in anguished

  627. pain,

  628. what is

  629. God doing?

  630. We may

  631. strain to

  632. see,

  633. but we have

  634. no elfin eye

  635. to catch

  636. any glimpse

  637. of glory.

  638. glory.

  639. And not

  640. only do

  641. we miss

  642. of any

  643. sight of

  644. glory,

  645. even a

  646. pinkish sky

  647. dawning with

  648. some prospect,

  649. no,

  650. we're pretty

  651. sure we

  652. see the

  653. opposite,

  654. and we're

  655. just plain

  656. confused

  657. and hurting.

  658. Well,

  659. that was

  660. certainly

  661. true of

  662. those around

  663. Jesus when

  664. he spoke

  665. of glory,

  666. right after

  667. making his

  668. statement about

  669. Lazarus'

  670. sickness being

  671. for the

  672. glory of

  673. God,

  674. the first

  675. thing Jesus

  676. did seemed

  677. all wrong.

  678. Mary and

  679. Martha had

  680. sent word

  681. that Lazarus

  682. was seriously

  683. ill.

  684. Well,

  685. what did

  686. they expect?

  687. After all,

  688. Jesus was

  689. really close

  690. to them

  691. and Lazarus,

  692. surely he

  693. would come

  694. right away.

  695. But Jesus

  696. acts clean

  697. contrary to

  698. their hopes,

  699. inexplicably

  700. so.

  701. We read

  702. of his

  703. response and

  704. glance back

  705. over the

  706. sentence,

  707. wondering if

  708. we've somehow

  709. misread it.

  710. Verse 5,

  711. now Jesus

  712. loved Mary

  713. and her

  714. sister and

  715. Lazarus.

  716. so when

  717. he heard

  718. that Lazarus

  719. was ill,

  720. he stayed

  721. two days

  722. longer

  723. in the

  724. place where

  725. he was.

  726. What?

  727. What are you

  728. doing,

  729. Jesus?

  730. If you want

  731. to bring good

  732. out of this,

  733. come immediately

  734. and heal him

  735. before it's too

  736. late.

  737. it is

  738. difficult to

  739. hold Jesus'

  740. action together

  741. with the

  742. knowledge that

  743. he is

  744. compassionate,

  745. caring,

  746. and loving.

  747. Even

  748. those

  749. who love

  750. him and

  751. trust him

  752. most,

  753. they're

  754. confused.

  755. Perhaps

  756. there's even

  757. a mild

  758. accusation

  759. in Martha's

  760. words

  761. that she

  762. speaks to

  763. him when

  764. he finally

  765. does arrive.

  766. Verse 21,

  767. Lord,

  768. if you

  769. had been

  770. here,

  771. my brother

  772. would not

  773. have died.

  774. And Mary

  775. too,

  776. in her

  777. hurt and

  778. confusion,

  779. speaks the

  780. very same

  781. words through

  782. her tears.

  783. Verse 32,

  784. Lord,

  785. if you

  786. had been

  787. here,

  788. my brother

  789. would not

  790. have died.

  791. if the

  792. point,

  793. if the

  794. fuller

  795. view of

  796. the death

  797. of a

  798. loved one

  799. is that

  800. it will

  801. somehow

  802. be to

  803. the glory

  804. of God,

  805. that

  806. somehow

  807. it will

  808. show God's

  809. wisdom,

  810. love,

  811. goodness,

  812. and beauty

  813. such that

  814. we will

  815. through it

  816. be drawn

  817. to adore

  818. him and

  819. delight in

  820. him more

  821. clearly.

  822. Well,

  823. clearly,

  824. we're presently

  825. in the dark

  826. as to how

  827. that could

  828. possibly be.

  829. We stand

  830. among the

  831. graves and

  832. amidst tears

  833. and see

  834. few,

  835. if any,

  836. shafts of

  837. glory.

  838. Indeed,

  839. so ungood

  840. and unglorious

  841. do things

  842. appear

  843. that one

  844. can easily

  845. understand

  846. how cruel,

  847. bitter,

  848. seemingly

  849. tragic

  850. realities put

  851. what at

  852. times feels

  853. like an

  854. unbearable

  855. strain

  856. upon trusting

  857. Jesus on

  858. this.

  859. It is

  860. hard to

  861. hold his

  862. care and

  863. compassion

  864. together with

  865. the outcomes

  866. of our

  867. experience.

  868. but to

  869. ease the

  870. tension

  871. by imagining

  872. that Jesus

  873. does not

  874. care,

  875. does not

  876. feel compassion

  877. for us in

  878. our sorrow,

  879. that can

  880. never be.

  881. Such a

  882. supposition

  883. must melt

  884. away

  885. before

  886. who he

  887. truly is.

  888. when we

  889. see him

  890. as indeed

  891. he truly

  892. is.

  893. And when

  894. we see

  895. him here

  896. before

  897. the grave

  898. of Lazarus,

  899. verse 35,

  900. Jesus

  901. wept.

  902. Jesus

  903. is among

  904. the mourners.

  905. He

  906. shares

  907. in the

  908. same

  909. sorrows.

  910. He is

  911. stricken

  912. by the

  913. same

  914. grief.

  915. He

  916. is

  917. alike

  918. with

  919. us

  920. in

  921. heaving

  922. sighs

  923. and

  924. trembling

  925. tears.

  926. And

  927. here's

  928. an

  929. extraordinary

  930. thing.

  931. Let's

  932. call it

  933. another

  934. window

  935. by which

  936. we may

  937. peer

  938. into

  939. his

  940. heart.

  941. We

  942. cannot

  943. doubt

  944. that

  945. Jesus

  946. knew

  947. that

  948. he

  949. would

  950. restore

  951. Lazarus

  952. to

  953. life.

  954. Indeed,

  955. in only

  956. a few

  957. moments,

  958. restore

  959. him to

  960. life.

  961. And yet,

  962. even knowing

  963. that,

  964. it does

  965. not blunt

  966. his sorrow

  967. or restrain

  968. his tears.

  969. there is a

  970. heart of

  971. sympathy.

  972. There

  973. is a

  974. heart

  975. tuned to

  976. the sorrow

  977. of humanity

  978. which

  979. trembles

  980. resonantly

  981. with every

  982. tear and

  983. sigh.

  984. Jesus

  985. wept.

  986. And he

  987. has wept

  988. with you

  989. for

  990. every tear

  991. of yours

  992. that has

  993. fallen

  994. and every

  995. numb

  996. hollowing

  997. out

  998. that you

  999. have

  1000. endured.

  1001. Do not

  1002. think he

  1003. does not

  1004. care.

  1005. Jesus

  1006. wept.

  1007. See how

  1008. he loved

  1009. him,

  1010. said those

  1011. around about.

  1012. And so

  1013. might it be

  1014. said of

  1015. you.

  1016. See how

  1017. he loves

  1018. you.

  1019. But

  1020. before we

  1021. move from

  1022. this window

  1023. there is

  1024. something more

  1025. to see

  1026. in the

  1027. heart of

  1028. Jesus.

  1029. For

  1030. there is

  1031. another

  1032. description

  1033. of his

  1034. emotion

  1035. at the

  1036. grave

  1037. here.

  1038. Verse

  1039. 32.

  1040. Our

  1041. few

  1042. Bibles

  1043. render it.

  1044. He was

  1045. greatly

  1046. moved

  1047. in his

  1048. spirit

  1049. and

  1050. deeply

  1051. troubled.

  1052. I won't

  1053. hide the

  1054. fact that

  1055. this phrase

  1056. has generated

  1057. a great

  1058. variance in

  1059. translation.

  1060. The difficulty

  1061. is that

  1062. most think

  1063. the story

  1064. requires

  1065. that the

  1066. words

  1067. communicate

  1068. an emotion

  1069. of grief

  1070. strickenness.

  1071. And yet

  1072. one of the

  1073. terms is

  1074. typically used

  1075. of beasts

  1076. neighing,

  1077. snorting,

  1078. roaring,

  1079. but when

  1080. used of

  1081. humans

  1082. invariably

  1083. refers

  1084. to

  1085. anger

  1086. and can

  1087. really only

  1088. indicate

  1089. a shudder

  1090. of vent

  1091. of indignation

  1092. and outrage.

  1093. Ah!

  1094. The problem

  1095. with this

  1096. otherwise

  1097. clear meaning

  1098. is answering

  1099. the question,

  1100. at what

  1101. then

  1102. was

  1103. Jesus

  1104. angry?

  1105. Several

  1106. suggestions

  1107. are offered.

  1108. Maybe

  1109. he was

  1110. angry

  1111. at Mary

  1112. and Martha

  1113. for trying

  1114. to force

  1115. him into

  1116. a miracle.

  1117. Maybe

  1118. he was

  1119. angry

  1120. at the

  1121. mourners

  1122. because he

  1123. detected

  1124. some hypocrisy

  1125. in their

  1126. mourning.

  1127. Or maybe

  1128. he was

  1129. angry

  1130. at the

  1131. mourners

  1132. because

  1133. they invaded

  1134. his privacy

  1135. when he

  1136. wanted to

  1137. have a

  1138. quiet

  1139. moment

  1140. with Mary

  1141. and Martha.

  1142. Some

  1143. suggest

  1144. he was

  1145. angry

  1146. at the

  1147. unbelief

  1148. of the

  1149. mourners

  1150. including

  1151. Mary

  1152. and Martha

  1153. who

  1154. grieved

  1155. as though

  1156. they had

  1157. no hope.

  1158. But the

  1159. intensity

  1160. of the

  1161. anger

  1162. that's

  1163. here

  1164. indicated

  1165. is

  1166. surely

  1167. disproportionate

  1168. to such

  1169. a supposed

  1170. cause.

  1171. I mean

  1172. none of

  1173. them I

  1174. think

  1175. can be

  1176. the

  1177. answer.

  1178. I

  1179. believe

  1180. the

  1181. object

  1182. of

  1183. Jesus'

  1184. outrage

  1185. his

  1186. vent

  1187. of

  1188. indignation

  1189. at the

  1190. grave

  1191. was

  1192. death

  1193. itself.

  1194. Surrounded

  1195. by the

  1196. sorrow

  1197. of the

  1198. mourners

  1199. and

  1200. particularly

  1201. of Mary's

  1202. grief

  1203. Jesus

  1204. contemplated

  1205. the

  1206. general

  1207. misery

  1208. of the

  1209. whole

  1210. human

  1211. race

  1212. and he

  1213. burns

  1214. with

  1215. rage

  1216. at

  1217. death

  1218. the

  1219. oppressor.

  1220. In

  1221. death

  1222. he sees

  1223. the skeleton

  1224. face of

  1225. the world

  1226. and traces

  1227. everywhere

  1228. its grim

  1229. and morbid

  1230. rain.

  1231. Indeed

  1232. the whole

  1233. earth

  1234. has

  1235. become

  1236. but the

  1237. valley

  1238. of a

  1239. shadow

  1240. of

  1241. death.

  1242. In the

  1243. tears

  1244. shed

  1245. in his

  1246. presence

  1247. Jesus

  1248. saw

  1249. that

  1250. ocean

  1251. of

  1252. time

  1253. whose

  1254. waters

  1255. of deep

  1256. woe

  1257. are brackish

  1258. with the

  1259. salt

  1260. of human

  1261. tears.

  1262. tears

  1263. of sympathy

  1264. filled

  1265. his eyes

  1266. and

  1267. beneath

  1268. them

  1269. there

  1270. burned

  1271. a

  1272. rage.

  1273. Oh

  1274. friend

  1275. he knows

  1276. your

  1277. woe.

  1278. All

  1279. the hurt

  1280. and havoc

  1281. that death

  1282. has wrought

  1283. and the

  1284. vials

  1285. of suffering

  1286. it has

  1287. poured

  1288. out

  1289. he hates

  1290. it with a

  1291. deep

  1292. indignation

  1293. and the

  1294. one behind

  1295. death

  1296. who wields

  1297. this terrible

  1298. weapon.

  1299. Of course

  1300. it is one

  1301. thing to

  1302. sympathize

  1303. to sincerely

  1304. have your

  1305. heart go

  1306. out to

  1307. the sufferer

  1308. to weep

  1309. with those

  1310. who weep

  1311. even to

  1312. burn with

  1313. inextinguishable

  1314. indignation

  1315. before the

  1316. grave.

  1317. but it's

  1318. quite another

  1319. thing

  1320. to be able

  1321. to do

  1322. anything

  1323. about it.

  1324. To be

  1325. able to

  1326. rescue

  1327. someone

  1328. from the

  1329. grave.

  1330. But is

  1331. this not

  1332. what we

  1333. truly need

  1334. in the

  1335. face of

  1336. death?

  1337. Not

  1338. merely a

  1339. sympathizer

  1340. but a

  1341. savior.

  1342. One who

  1343. can reverse

  1344. the dread

  1345. finality

  1346. of it.

  1347. Stop in

  1348. its tracks

  1349. its grim

  1350. triumphant

  1351. march.

  1352. So look

  1353. with me

  1354. through one

  1355. final window

  1356. into the

  1357. heart of

  1358. Jesus

  1359. where we

  1360. see him

  1361. again

  1362. groaning

  1363. in spirit.

  1364. Verse

  1365. 38

  1366. It's the

  1367. same

  1368. flaming

  1369. rage

  1370. but the

  1371. setting

  1372. has changed.

  1373. Before

  1374. he was

  1375. among the

  1376. mourners

  1377. now

  1378. he is

  1379. striding

  1380. toward the

  1381. tomb

  1382. as a

  1383. warrior

  1384. to do

  1385. battle.

  1386. Before

  1387. he was

  1388. among the

  1389. ravages

  1390. of his

  1391. kinsmen.

  1392. Now

  1393. he turns

  1394. from the

  1395. smoldering

  1396. rubble

  1397. of the

  1398. city

  1399. of humanity

  1400. toward the

  1401. enemy

  1402. who has

  1403. despoiled

  1404. them.

  1405. This

  1406. is the

  1407. king

  1408. going

  1409. forth

  1410. to do

  1411. battle.

  1412. It is

  1413. the

  1414. princely

  1415. valor

  1416. that must

  1417. stir

  1418. every

  1419. heart.

  1420. the

  1421. true

  1422. going

  1423. forth

  1424. to

  1425. which

  1426. all

  1427. the

  1428. great

  1429. tales

  1430. of

  1431. myth

  1432. and

  1433. story

  1434. gesture.

  1435. He

  1436. smites

  1437. the

  1438. grave

  1439. with

  1440. his

  1441. voice.

  1442. Verse

  1443. 43

  1444. He cried

  1445. with a

  1446. loud

  1447. voice

  1448. Lazarus

  1449. come

  1450. forth.

  1451. hearing

  1452. hearing

  1453. that

  1454. voice

  1455. of

  1456. kingly

  1457. power

  1458. the

  1459. jaws

  1460. of

  1461. death

  1462. open

  1463. releasing

  1464. its

  1465. prey.

  1466. The

  1467. great

  1468. enemy

  1469. lifts

  1470. its

  1471. foot

  1472. from

  1473. the

  1474. neck

  1475. of

  1476. its

  1477. victim

  1478. and

  1479. the

  1480. prisoner

  1481. goes

  1482. free.

  1483. And

  1484. yet

  1485. this

  1486. was

  1487. but a

  1488. skirmish

  1489. on the

  1490. outskirts.

  1491. The

  1492. real

  1493. battle

  1494. lay

  1495. ahead

  1496. to

  1497. where

  1498. he

  1499. had

  1500. set

  1501. his

  1502. face

  1503. like

  1504. flint.

  1505. Lazarus

  1506. was

  1507. merely

  1508. resuscitated.

  1509. Death

  1510. would

  1511. still

  1512. have

  1513. him

  1514. as

  1515. its

  1516. prey.

  1517. The

  1518. grave

  1519. would

  1520. yet

  1521. have

  1522. its

  1523. fill.

  1524. Jesus

  1525. knew

  1526. this.

  1527. This

  1528. skirmish

  1529. at the

  1530. grave

  1531. was

  1532. just

  1533. a

  1534. foreshadow

  1535. of the

  1536. real

  1537. battle.

  1538. That

  1539. battle

  1540. which lay

  1541. ahead

  1542. upon a

  1543. hill

  1544. outside

  1545. Jerusalem.

  1546. There

  1547. would

  1548. be the

  1549. true

  1550. contest

  1551. with

  1552. every

  1553. fiend

  1554. and

  1555. demon

  1556. hell's

  1557. denizens

  1558. gathered

  1559. in strength

  1560. to afflict

  1561. their

  1562. worst.

  1563. There

  1564. in the

  1565. heart

  1566. of the

  1567. enemy

  1568. stronghold

  1569. he

  1570. would

  1571. spill

  1572. his

  1573. soul

  1574. for

  1575. his

  1576. brethren.

  1577. There

  1578. he

  1579. would

  1580. cry

  1581. out

  1582. not

  1583. simply

  1584. come

  1585. forth

  1586. but

  1587. as

  1588. his

  1589. own

  1590. blood

  1591. flowed

  1592. forth

  1593. cry

  1594. out

  1595. it

  1596. is

  1597. finished

  1598. as

  1599. he

  1600. himself

  1601. the

  1602. champion

  1603. would

  1604. lay

  1605. down

  1606. his

  1607. life

  1608. in

  1609. ransom

  1610. and

  1611. himself

  1612. sink

  1613. down

  1614. into

  1615. death.

  1616. At

  1617. the

  1618. grave

  1619. of

  1620. Lazarus

  1621. he

  1622. contemplated

  1623. this

  1624. fearsome

  1625. battle

  1626. that

  1627. would

  1628. cost

  1629. him

  1630. his

  1631. life.

  1632. Sever

  1633. the

  1634. never

  1635. broken

  1636. communion

  1637. with

  1638. the

  1639. father

  1640. and

  1641. he

  1642. was

  1643. troubled

  1644. in

  1645. spirit.

  1646. He

  1647. shuddered

  1648. at

  1649. the

  1650. cost

  1651. he

  1652. would

  1653. pay

  1654. for

  1655. the

  1656. real

  1657. rescue

  1658. of

  1659. his

  1660. people.

  1661. The

  1662. cost

  1663. not

  1664. as

  1665. with

  1666. Lazarus

  1667. of

  1668. a

  1669. momentary

  1670. reprieve

  1671. from

  1672. death

  1673. only

  1674. finally

  1675. to

  1676. sink

  1677. down

  1678. into

  1679. it

  1680. again

  1681. at

  1682. the

  1683. last

  1684. but

  1685. to

  1686. for

  1687. his

  1688. people

  1689. burst

  1690. its

  1691. bonds

  1692. forever

  1693. not

  1694. merely

  1695. resuscitation

  1696. but

  1697. resurrection

  1698. unto

  1699. everlasting

  1700. life

  1701. across

  1702. which

  1703. death's

  1704. dark

  1705. shadow

  1706. would

  1707. never

  1708. again

  1709. fall

  1710. that

  1711. in

  1712. the

  1713. morning

  1714. of

  1715. the

  1716. resurrection

  1717. would

  1718. sound

  1719. from

  1720. his

  1721. voice

  1722. a

  1723. come

  1724. forth

  1725. that

  1726. would

  1727. issue

  1728. in

  1729. a

  1730. life

  1731. which

  1732. would

  1733. roll

  1734. on

  1735. through

  1736. all

  1737. the

  1738. years

  1739. of

  1740. endless

  1741. ages

  1742. yes

  1743. at

  1744. the

  1745. tomb

  1746. of

  1747. Lazarus

  1748. his

  1749. eye

  1750. was

  1751. on

  1752. the

  1753. cross

  1754. the

  1755. groan

  1756. that

  1757. issued

  1758. gutturally

  1759. from

  1760. his

  1761. inner

  1762. being

  1763. was

  1764. brother

  1765. to

  1766. the

  1767. sweat

  1768. like

  1769. drops

  1770. of

  1771. blood

  1772. in

  1773. gethsemane

  1774. indeed

  1775. when word

  1776. was first

  1777. brought

  1778. to

  1779. Jesus

  1780. of

  1781. Lazarus

  1782. illness

  1783. his

  1784. eye

  1785. was

  1786. upon

  1787. the

  1788. cross

  1789. he

  1790. knew

  1791. Lazarus

  1792. would

  1793. die

  1794. he

  1795. knew

  1796. he

  1797. would

  1798. raise

  1799. him

  1800. and

  1801. he

  1802. knew

  1803. this

  1804. great

  1805. miracle

  1806. would

  1807. galvanize

  1808. those

  1809. who

  1810. sought

  1811. his

  1812. destruction

  1813. as

  1814. was

  1815. so

  1816. verse

  1817. 53

  1818. tells

  1819. us

  1820. from

  1821. that

  1822. day

  1823. on

  1824. they

  1825. made

  1826. plans

  1827. to

  1828. put

  1829. Jesus

  1830. to

  1831. death

  1832. thus

  1833. Lazarus

  1834. illness

  1835. would

  1836. propel

  1837. Jesus

  1838. to

  1839. the

  1840. cross

  1841. and

  1842. this

  1843. was

  1844. a

  1845. great

  1846. part

  1847. of

  1848. the

  1849. meaning

  1850. of

  1851. how

  1852. Lazarus

  1853. illness

  1854. would

  1855. glorify

  1856. God

  1857. did

  1858. you

  1859. notice

  1860. how

  1861. Jesus

  1862. put

  1863. it

  1864. there

  1865. in

  1866. verse

  1867. four

  1868. that

  1869. Lazarus

  1870. death

  1871. is

  1872. in

  1873. order

  1874. that

  1875. the

  1876. son

  1877. of

  1878. God

  1879. himself

  1880. may

  1881. be

  1882. glorified

  1883. through

  1884. it

  1885. what

  1886. did

  1887. that

  1888. mean

  1889. well

  1890. there

  1891. is

  1892. no

  1893. mystery

  1894. in

  1895. John's

  1896. gospel

  1897. as

  1898. to

  1899. the

  1900. meaning

  1901. of

  1902. Jesus

  1903. glorification

  1904. his

  1905. hour

  1906. in

  1907. which

  1908. he

  1909. would

  1910. be

  1911. lifted

  1912. up

  1913. and

  1914. glorified

  1915. it

  1916. was

  1917. the

  1918. cross

  1919. so

  1920. Lazarus

  1921. his

  1922. deadly

  1923. illness

  1924. brought

  1925. the

  1926. glorification

  1927. of

  1928. Jesus

  1929. on

  1930. the

  1931. cross

  1932. in

  1933. God's

  1934. sovereign

  1935. scheme

  1936. that

  1937. was

  1938. what

  1939. it

  1940. was

  1941. for

  1942. but

  1943. who

  1944. could

  1945. have

  1946. known

  1947. but

  1948. Jesus

  1949. to

  1950. all

  1951. but

  1952. him

  1953. it

  1954. simply

  1955. seemed

  1956. a

  1957. tragic

  1958. death

  1959. simply

  1960. an

  1961. aching

  1962. sorrow

  1963. of

  1964. course

  1965. it

  1966. would

  1967. be

  1968. so

  1969. too

  1970. and

  1971. more

  1972. so

  1973. for

  1974. a

  1975. death

  1976. that

  1977. would

  1978. follow

  1979. so

  1980. soon

  1981. upon

  1982. its

  1983. heels

  1984. when

  1985. Jesus

  1986. would

  1987. climb

  1988. the

  1989. hill

  1990. and

  1991. then

  1992. the

  1993. cross

  1994. try

  1995. to

  1996. imagine

  1997. how

  1998. full

  1999. of

  2000. sorrow

  2001. and

  2002. confusion

  2003. were

  2004. his

  2005. disciples

  2006. as

  2007. they

  2008. stood

  2009. at

  2010. the

  2011. cross

  2012. and

  2013. watched

  2014. their

  2015. master

  2016. expire

  2017. executed

  2018. as an

  2019. imposter

  2020. and a

  2021. malefactor

  2022. what a

  2023. pointless

  2024. tragedy

  2025. they must

  2026. have

  2027. thought

  2028. it

  2029. was

  2030. can

  2031. you

  2032. not

  2033. hear

  2034. them

  2035. saying

  2036. in

  2037. their

  2038. dismay

  2039. surely

  2040. nothing

  2041. good

  2042. could

  2043. come

  2044. of

  2045. this

  2046. how

  2047. could

  2048. God

  2049. possibly

  2050. even

  2051. remotely

  2052. glorify

  2053. himself

  2054. in

  2055. this

  2056. they

  2057. didn't

  2058. see

  2059. it

  2060. they

  2061. could

  2062. not

  2063. have

  2064. seen

  2065. it

  2066. they

  2067. could

  2068. only

  2069. sorrow

  2070. Jesus

  2071. knew

  2072. this

  2073. too

  2074. he

  2075. had

  2076. told

  2077. his

  2078. disciples

  2079. and

  2080. their

  2081. foreboding

  2082. sense

  2083. of

  2084. impending

  2085. doom

  2086. in

  2087. the

  2088. final

  2089. day

  2090. before

  2091. the

  2092. cross

  2093. what

  2094. I

  2095. am

  2096. now

  2097. doing

  2098. you

  2099. do

  2100. not

  2101. now

  2102. understand

  2103. but

  2104. afterward

  2105. you

  2106. will

  2107. understand

  2108. John

  2109. 13

  2110. 7

  2111. friends

  2112. this

  2113. side

  2114. of

  2115. glory

  2116. we

  2117. are

  2118. as

  2119. his

  2120. disciples

  2121. so

  2122. often

  2123. confused

  2124. and

  2125. sorrowful

  2126. hollowed

  2127. out

  2128. unable

  2129. to

  2130. see

  2131. or even

  2132. catch a

  2133. glimpse

  2134. of

  2135. glory

  2136. times

  2137. all

  2138. we

  2139. see

  2140. through

  2141. our

  2142. tears

  2143. are

  2144. those

  2145. strewn

  2146. graves

  2147. of

  2148. precious

  2149. ones

  2150. and

  2151. treasured

  2152. things

  2153. so

  2154. let us

  2155. cling

  2156. to

  2157. his

  2158. words

  2159. and

  2160. take

  2161. them

  2162. into

  2163. our

  2164. hurting

  2165. heavy

  2166. hearts

  2167. what

  2168. I

  2169. am

  2170. doing

  2171. you

  2172. do

  2173. not

  2174. now

  2175. understand

  2176. but

  2177. afterward

  2178. you

  2179. shall

  2180. understand

  2181. will

  2182. you

  2183. not

  2184. trust

  2185. him

  2186. he

  2187. weeps

  2188. at

  2189. your

  2190. graveside

  2191. will

  2192. you

  2193. not

  2194. trust

  2195. him

  2196. he

  2197. has

  2198. girded

  2199. his

  2200. loins

  2201. and

  2202. run

  2203. with

  2204. burning

  2205. indignation

  2206. against

  2207. our

  2208. great

  2209. and

  2210. terrible

  2211. enemy

  2212. will

  2213. you

  2214. not

  2215. trust

  2216. him

  2217. he

  2218. has

  2219. in

  2220. his

  2221. kingly

  2222. valor

  2223. gotten

  2224. the

  2225. victory

  2226. for

  2227. his

  2228. people

  2229. will

  2230. we

  2231. not

  2232. trust

  2233. him

  2234. with

  2235. our

  2236. sorrows

  2237. where

  2238. else

  2239. will

  2240. we

  2241. trust

  2242. when

  2243. it

  2244. comes

  2245. to

  2246. death

  2247. our

  2248. great

  2249. enemy

  2250. so

  2251. let

  2252. us

  2253. hear

  2254. again

  2255. his

  2256. promise

  2257. for

  2258. it

  2259. and

  2260. he

  2261. who

  2262. makes

  2263. it

  2264. shall

  2265. alone

  2266. pierce

  2267. the

  2268. dark

  2269. gloom

  2270. with

  2271. a

  2272. strong

  2273. hope

  2274. a

  2275. hope

  2276. that

  2277. shall

  2278. not

  2279. disappoint

  2280. I

  2281. am

  2282. the

  2283. resurrection

  2284. and the

  2285. life

  2286. whoever

  2287. believes

  2288. in me

  2289. though

  2290. he

  2291. die

  2292. yet

  2293. shall

  2294. he

  2295. live

  2296. and

  2297. everyone

  2298. who

  2299. lives

  2300. and

  2301. believes

  2302. in

  2303. me

  2304. shall

  2305. never

  2306. die

  2307. do

  2308. you

  2309. believe

  2310. this

  2311. let's

  2312. pray

  2313. Lord

  2314. we

  2315. say

  2316. with

  2317. those

  2318. women

  2319. at

  2320. another

  2321. tomb

  2322. we

  2323. would

  2324. see

  2325. Jesus

  2326. Lord

  2327. as

  2328. we

  2329. set

  2330. and

  2331. stay

  2332. our

  2333. sight

  2334. upon

  2335. the

  2336. face

  2337. of

  2338. Jesus

  2339. would

  2340. you

  2341. by

  2342. your

  2343. gentle

  2344. and

  2345. strong

  2346. spirit

  2347. cause

  2348. that

  2349. face

  2350. to

  2351. become

  2352. for

  2353. us

  2354. that

  2355. place

  2356. where

  2357. the

  2358. glory

  2359. of

  2360. God

  2361. is

  2362. revealed

  2363. to

  2364. us

  2365. and

  2366. so

  2367. melt

  2368. our

  2369. hearts

  2370. and

  2371. when

  2372. we

  2373. finally

  2374. come

  2375. to

  2376. cross

  2377. that

  2378. dread

  2379. river

  2380. may

  2381. its

  2382. experience

  2383. be

  2384. changed

  2385. for

  2386. us

  2387. because

  2388. of

  2389. Christ

  2390. as

  2391. we

  2392. go

  2393. down

  2394. into

  2395. the

  2396. chill

  2397. waters

  2398. may

  2399. we

  2400. feel

  2401. that

  2402. underneath

  2403. are

  2404. the

  2405. everlasting

  2406. arms

  2407. and

  2408. may

  2409. we

  2410. feel

  2411. that

  2412. firm

  2413. strong

  2414. tender

  2415. hand

  2416. from

  2417. which

  2418. hand

  2419. no one

  2420. shall

  2421. snatch

  2422. us

  2423. conduct

  2424. us

  2425. through

  2426. that

  2427. river

  2428. to

  2429. the

  2430. other

  2431. side

  2432. to

  2433. open

  2434. our

  2435. eyes

  2436. upon

  2437. that

  2438. same

  2439. face

  2440. we

  2441. have

  2442. long

  2443. loved

  2444. who

  2445. will

  2446. forever

  2447. be the

  2448. center

  2449. of our

  2450. love

  2451. and life

  2452. as the

  2453. ages

  2454. roll

  2455. on

  2456. without

  2457. end

  2458. amen
