  1. Ah, well, good evening, friends. Good to see you tonight. We are looking at 1 Samuel,

  2. the book of 1 Samuel, chapters 9 and 10. That's page 231 in the Pew Bible, if you want to turn

    1 Samuel 9 chapter mention

  3. there. 1 Samuel 9 and 10. Both chapters, the whole way through. We're going to do it tonight.

  4. It's a big chunk of Bible we're looking at this evening. These two chapters tell the story

  5. of how Israel got its first king, King Saul.

  6. Let me just say a brief prayer for us before we jump in. God, we pray that you would indeed open

  7. our eyes and our hearts and our wills and our affections to hear and to receive what you're

  8. saying to us tonight. Lord, we ask this for Christ's sake. Amen.

  9. So over the next few weeks, we're actually going to be following the story of Saul as we work our

  10. way through 1 Samuel. We're going to look at Saul's rise to the kingship in chapters 9 through 11,

  11. and then in chapter 12 as sort of Samuel's farewell. And then in verses 13, 14, and 15 are sort of

  12. Saul's downfall. So we're going to look at his rise and fall over the coming weeks. But tonight,

  13. in these two chapters, we're focusing on Saul's beginning. Where did he start? In chapter 8,

  14. remember, that we looked at a couple weeks ago, the people demanded a king. And so here he is. In

  15. chapter 9, Saul is introduced. Then in the beginning of chapter 10, as we'll see, Saul's privately anointed

  16. to be king by the prophet Samuel. And then at the end of chapter 10, that choice is made public.

  17. The Lord makes known his choice of Saul before the whole nation. That's basically the flow of these

  18. two chapters. Now, obviously, there's lots that we could learn here, and we won't get to all of it

  19. tonight. So tonight, I want us to just focus on three lessons in particular that we see in these

  20. two chapters. So three lessons. The first that we see in the opening verses is a lesson in God's

  21. providence. So let's pick up the story in chapter 9, verse 1.

  22. There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of

  23. Bechoreth, the son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth. And he had a son whose name was Saul,

  24. a handsome young man. There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he.

  25. From his shoulders upwards, he was taller than any of the people. Now, the donkeys of Kish,

  26. Saul's father, were lost. So Kish said to Saul, his son, take one of the young men with you and arise,

  27. go and look for the donkeys. And he passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the

  28. land of Shalishah, but they did not find them. And they passed through the land of Shalim, but they

  29. were not there. Then they passed through the land of Benjamin, but did not find them. When they came to

  30. the land of Zuf, Saul said to his servant who was with him, come, let's go back, lest my father cease to

  31. care about the donkeys and become anxious about us. But the servant said to him, behold, there's a man

  32. of God in this city and he has a man who is held in honor. All that he says comes true. Now, so now

  33. let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go. And Saul said to his servant, but if we

  34. go, what can we bring the man for the bread in our sacks is gone and there's no present to bring the

  35. man of God. What do we have? The servant answered Saul again, here, I have with me a quarter of a shekel

  36. of silver and I will give it to the man of God to tell us our way. Formerly in Israel, when a man

  37. went to inquire of God, he said, come, let us go to the seer for today's prophet was formerly called

  38. a seer. And Saul said to his servant, well said, come, let us go. So they went to the city where the

  39. man of God was. As they went up the hill to the city, they met young women coming out to draw water

  40. and said to them, is the seer here? They answered, he is behold, he's just ahead of you. Hurry. He has

  41. come just now to the city because the people have a sacrifice today in the high place. As soon as you

  42. enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat for the people will not

  43. eat till he comes since he must bless the sacrifice. Afterward, those who are invited will eat. Now go up

  44. for you will meet him immediately. So they went up to the city as they were entering the city.

  45. They saw Samuel coming out toward them on his way up to the high place. Now the day before Saul came,

  46. the Lord had revealed to Samuel tomorrow about this time, I will send you a man from the land of

  47. Benjamin and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people, Israel. He shall save my people from the

  48. land, from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people because their cry has come to me.

  49. When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, here's the man of whom I spoke to you.

  50. He it is who shall restrain or govern my people.

  51. Then Saul approached Samuel in the gate and said, tell me, where is the house of the seer?

  52. Samuel answered Saul, I am a seer.

  53. Go up before me to the high place, for today you shall eat with me.

  54. And in the morning I will let you go and tell you all that is on your mind.

  55. As for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them,

  56. for they have been found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel?

  57. Is it not for you and for all your father's house?

  58. Saul answered, am I not a Benjaminite from the least of the tribes of Israel?

  59. And is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin?

  60. Amen.

  61. Why then have you spoken to me in this way?

  62. Let's pause there.

  63. We know it must have seemed like an ordinary day at the start of it.

  64. Some livestock had gotten loose and wandered away.

  65. And so Saul is sent to find them.

  66. It's a pretty typical scene in ancient Palestine.

  67. Little did Saul know that God was orchestrating one of the most surprising and important days of his life.

  68. Look at all the little details as you scan back over this portion we just read.

  69. Look at all the little details that come together.

  70. The donkeys that just happened to go missing.

  71. The servant who just happens to have a silver coin in his pocket.

  72. The women who just happen to be coming out drawing water.

  73. And at just the right moment, who should meet them but Samuel, the great prophet himself.

  74. And we know that none of this is just mere coincidence.

  75. Look again down at verse 16.

  76. Tomorrow about this time, God says, I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin.

  77. You see, God was working in and through all these ordinary events to bring about his plan for Saul and for Israel.

  78. This chapter is a striking picture of what we often call God's providence.

  79. Here's one way God's providence has been described.

  80. Providence is the almighty and ever-present power of God by which he upholds as with his hand heaven and earth and all creatures.

  81. And so rules them that leaf and blade, rain and drought, fruitful and lean years, food and drink, health and sickness, prosperity and poverty.

  82. All things, in fact, come to us not by chance, but from his fatherly hand.

  83. In other words, God orders all things for the good of his people.

  84. Look again at verse 16.

  85. Why is God bringing Saul to Samuel?

  86. Why has he orchestrated things in this way?

  87. Why is God going to make Saul king?

  88. After all, we know from chapter 8 that the people wanted a king for all the wrong reasons, right?

  89. They wanted to be just like the nations around them.

  90. Why does God even entertain the thought?

  91. Well, even though the people are rebellious, you see, God is still merciful toward them.

  92. Here's why God's going to make Saul king.

  93. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines, for I've seen my people because their cry has come to me.

  94. Verse 16.

  95. That sounds a lot like the hand of Exodus chapter 2, doesn't it?

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  96. Where God hears the people groaning in slavery in Egypt.

  97. And the text says he sees and he knows.

  98. And what happens?

  99. He raises up a deliverer.

  100. God's providential control of all things, you see, is motivated by his mercy for his people.

  101. Of course, in the middle of our life stories, we certainly don't see how all of it fits together, right?

  102. I mean, how could we?

  103. Think about Saul.

  104. After the young Saul had trucked all around the hill country in the hot sun, only to not find the donkeys,

  105. the only thing he was probably thinking was, I'm tired of looking for donkeys, and it's time to go home, right?

  106. He wasn't thinking, I know this is part of God's providential plan for my life, and today is going to be a very special day.

  107. No, he didn't know how it was all fitting together.

  108. And yet what he couldn't see was that losing the donkeys meant finding the kingdom.

  109. And there's a lesson here for all of us.

  110. The lesson to trust that God is working through the everyday events of your life to bring about God's good work.

  111. Again, it's not our job to try to figure it all out.

  112. To try to guess in the middle of the story how and why God does certain things.

  113. Because no doubt if we try to do that, we'll probably get it wrong.

  114. But we can trust that even in the little things, God is working his fatherly mercy in our lives.

  115. Now there's a lot more that we could say about that, and maybe afterwards if we have some time we can engage that in Q&A.

  116. But I think that's the first brief lesson we see here, is this lesson about God's providence.

  117. The next thing we have is a lesson in assurance.

  118. Let's pick up in 9, 22.

  119. Then Samuel took Saul and his young man and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head of those who had been invited, who were about 30 persons.

  120. And Samuel said to the cook,

  121. Bring the portion I gave you, of which I said to you, put it aside.

  122. So the cook took up the leg and what was on it, it set them before Saul.

  123. And Samuel said,

  124. See, what is kept is set before you.

  125. Eat, because it was kept for you until the hour appointed that you might eat with the guests.

  126. So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

  127. And when they came down from the high place into the city, a bed was spread for Saul on the roof, and he lay down to sleep.

  128. And at the break of dawn, Samuel called to Saul on the roof,

  129. Up, that I might send you on your way.

  130. So Saul rose, and both he and Samuel went out into the street.

  131. As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul,

  132. Tell the servant to pass on before us.

  133. And when he has passed on, stop here yourself for a while, that I may make known to you the word of God.

  134. Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul's head and kissed him and said,

  135. Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people, Israel?

  136. And you shall reign over the people of the Lord, and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies.

  137. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage.

  138. When you depart from me today, you will meet two men by Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah.

  139. And they will say to you, The donkeys that you went to seek are found,

  140. and now your father has ceased to care about the donkeys and is anxious about you,

  141. saying, What shall I do about my son?

  142. Then you shall go on from there farther and come to the oak of Tabor.

  143. Three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you there,

  144. one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread,

  145. and another carrying a skin of wine.

  146. And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread,

  147. which you shall accept from their hand.

  148. After that, you shall come to Gibeath Elohim,

  149. where there is a garrison of the Philistines.

  150. And there, as soon as you come to the city,

  151. you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place

  152. with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying.

  153. Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you,

  154. and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.

  155. Now when these signs meet you,

  156. do what your hand finds to do,

  157. for God is with you.

  158. Then go down before me to Gilgal,

  159. and behold, I'm coming down to you to offer burnt offerings

  160. and to sacrifice peace offerings.

  161. Seven days you shall wait until I come to you

  162. and show you what you shall do.

  163. When he turned his back to leave Samuel,

  164. God gave him another heart,

  165. and all these signs came to pass that day.

  166. When they came to Gibeah,

  167. behold, a group of prophets met him,

  168. and the Spirit of God rushed upon him,

  169. and he prophesied among them.

  170. And when all who knew him previously saw

  171. how he prophesied with the prophets,

  172. the people said to one another,

  173. What has come over the son of Kish?

  174. Is Saul also among the prophets?

  175. And a man of the place answered,

  176. And who is their father?

  177. Therefore it became a proverb,

  178. Is Saul also among the prophets?

  179. When he had finished prophesying,

  180. he came to the high place.

  181. And Saul's uncle said to him and to his servant,

  182. Where did you go?

  183. And he said to seek the donkeys.

  184. And when we saw that they were not found,

  185. we went to Samuel.

  186. And Saul's uncle said,

  187. Please tell me what Samuel said to you.

  188. And Saul said to his uncle,

  189. He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found.

  190. But about the matter of the kingdom

  191. of which Samuel had spoken,

  192. he did not tell him anything.

  193. So it's clear from these verses

  194. that God had chosen Saul

  195. to be Israel's first king.

  196. And here we see how God goes to incredible lengths

  197. to give Saul such rich assurance of this fact.

  198. First, there's this feast, right?

  199. Imagine how Saul must have felt.

  200. He hadn't met Samuel before in his life,

  201. but Samuel in essence says,

  202. Ah, I've been expecting you.

  203. Here, sit at the head of the table,

  204. and I'll tell the cook to bring

  205. the choice portion of meat

  206. that I'd set aside for you.

  207. That must have been really strange for Saul.

  208. Here he is a stranger

  209. being welcomed as the guest of honor.

  210. Next, there are these signs

  211. that Samuel tells him will come true.

  212. And notice how concrete and specific they are.

  213. Two men by Rachel's tomb

  214. who will give you word about the donkeys.

  215. Three men going up to Bethel

  216. who will give you bread to eat.

  217. You know, these aren't your sort of general,

  218. horoscopy, could probably come true

  219. in a lot of different ways sort of things, right?

  220. They're super specific

  221. because God wants to give Saul assurance.

  222. And then comes the third sign.

  223. The spirit rushes upon Saul at Gibeah

  224. and he begins prophesying

  225. along with a group of prophets there.

  226. And Gibeah, as we find out a little later

  227. in chapter 10, is Saul's hometown.

  228. So some of his neighbors see this and say,

  229. is Saul also among the prophets?

  230. Which ends up becoming this sort of

  231. slang way of saying,

  232. well, you don't see that every day.

  233. That's kind of hard to believe.

  234. Those two things don't usually go together.

  235. Is Saul among the prophets?

  236. The feast, the signs,

  237. the rushing of the spirit,

  238. all of this is confirmation

  239. of the anointing that Saul receives

  240. at the beginning of chapter 10.

  241. Anointing, by the way,

  242. was a sort of symbolic way

  243. of setting someone apart

  244. for a special role,

  245. for a special task.

  246. And here, this anointing symbolizes

  247. that God is setting apart Saul

  248. to be Israel's king.

  249. And you might ask,

  250. well, why is God doing all of this in private?

  251. Why is he sort of anointing Saul

  252. without anybody around?

  253. And the answer

  254. is probably that God is preparing Saul

  255. for what's about to happen

  256. at the end of chapter 10.

  257. In other words,

  258. he wants Saul to be personally ready

  259. when God makes his choice public.

  260. He's preparing him in advance

  261. and God gives Saul

  262. all these assurances

  263. so he won't be afraid

  264. when that day comes.

  265. God wants Saul to know

  266. that he's chosen him

  267. and that he'll be with him.

  268. And that's what 10-7 is all about.

  269. Look at that verse again.

  270. It says,

  271. Now when these signs meet you,

  272. do what your hand finds to do.

  273. In other words,

  274. be assured of your kingship

  275. for God is with you.

  276. I think there's a lesson here for us

  277. about assurance.

  278. Now, of course,

  279. none of us will have an identical

  280. sort of experience as Saul.

  281. Right?

  282. On the one hand,

  283. none of us in this room

  284. is going to have God come to us

  285. and tell us that we're going to be

  286. the next king of Israel.

  287. I'm pretty confident of that.

  288. Even more so,

  289. I don't think we need to expect

  290. God to use

  291. similar kinds of miraculous signs

  292. or powerful outward manifestations

  293. of the Spirit

  294. to grant us assurance today.

  295. Not that God can't do those things.

  296. He certainly can.

  297. But we need not depend

  298. on those particular kinds

  299. of assurances.

  300. But having said all that,

  301. the reality is, friends,

  302. God doesn't want us

  303. to be timid

  304. or fearful

  305. in our relationship to Him.

  306. He wants us to be reverent.

  307. He wants us to be humble.

  308. But He doesn't want us to be afraid.

  309. He doesn't want us to be timid.

  310. You see, friends,

  311. the New Testament teaches us

  312. that everyone

  313. who turns from sin

  314. and places their trust in Jesus

  315. is completely forgiven

  316. and counted righteous

  317. in God's sight.

  318. That is, they're fully

  319. and objectively justified

  320. before God.

  321. And if that weren't enough,

  322. everyone who's justified in Christ,

  323. the New Testament says,

  324. is also fully adopted

  325. as one of God's own sons

  326. and daughters

  327. with all the rights

  328. and privileges

  329. and joys

  330. that come with that status.

  331. So you see,

  332. we're not just forgiven

  333. and given a perfect legal record

  334. before God in Christ,

  335. but we're also brought

  336. into the family.

  337. And you see, friends,

  338. the deeper you come to grip

  339. those twin truths

  340. that we've been made righteous in Him

  341. and that we've been brought

  342. into the family in Him,

  343. the deeper and deeper

  344. you cling to those

  345. and come to know those

  346. in your heart,

  347. the more and more

  348. your life begins to change

  349. and unfold

  350. in all sorts of ways.

  351. In some sense,

  352. that's the secret

  353. to Christian growth.

  354. Really coming to believe

  355. who we are in Christ.

  356. Forgiven family.

  357. And the question is,

  358. how do we grow

  359. in that deep,

  360. rich assurance

  361. of what we have

  362. in Christ?

  363. And you see here,

  364. the secret is not

  365. to try to replicate

  366. Saul's experience

  367. that we see in this chapter.

  368. The secret is not

  369. to try to hunt down

  370. coincidences

  371. that might confirm it

  372. or try to whip up

  373. ecstatic experiences

  374. that might sort of

  375. bring some assurance.

  376. Look, if God wants

  377. to give you those,

  378. fine, great.

  379. That's fun.

  380. But that's not really

  381. where assurance comes from.

  382. Don't try to replicate

  383. Saul's experience.

  384. Instead,

  385. if you want assurance,

  386. look more and more

  387. to the one

  388. who fulfilled

  389. Saul's experience.

  390. And what I mean is this.

  391. You see,

  392. when Saul was anointed

  393. king of Israel

  394. and when the spirit

  395. rushed upon him,

  396. it's as if God

  397. was tracing

  398. a pattern

  399. into history.

  400. It's as if God

  401. was making an outline

  402. in the midst

  403. of time.

  404. But you see,

  405. Saul himself,

  406. he couldn't fill in

  407. the outline.

  408. He couldn't fill in

  409. and complete the picture.

  410. We'll see in chapters 13

  411. and following

  412. that even though

  413. Saul started well,

  414. he didn't finish well.

  415. He ends up being

  416. one of the most

  417. tragic figures

  418. in the Old Testament.

  419. You see, friends,

  420. Saul was just a trace

  421. of the one to come.

  422. Because there would be

  423. one who would come

  424. who would be

  425. the truly

  426. anointed one.

  427. There would be one

  428. who came

  429. who would be

  430. utterly

  431. and completely

  432. filled with the spirit.

  433. And not in some

  434. sort of momentary way

  435. that sort of came

  436. and went,

  437. but one who would be

  438. filled with the spirit

  439. permanently

  440. in all of his ways.

  441. You see,

  442. when Jesus Christ

  443. began his public

  444. ministry

  445. and was baptized

  446. by John the Baptist,

  447. do you remember

  448. what happened?

  449. the heavens

  450. tore open

  451. and the spirit

  452. descended

  453. and remained

  454. on him.

  455. And then God

  456. the Father

  457. spoke these words

  458. of assurance.

  459. This is my beloved

  460. son

  461. in whom

  462. I am well pleased.

  463. And Jesus

  464. having

  465. began well,

  466. we know

  467. finished well.

  468. He obeyed

  469. his father

  470. to the end.

  471. He ascended

  472. the cross

  473. for our sins

  474. and he rose

  475. again three days

  476. later

  477. demonstrating

  478. that he had

  479. destroyed the power

  480. of sin and death

  481. through his death

  482. on the cross.

  483. And he ascended

  484. to God's right hand

  485. where he sits

  486. right now

  487. enthroned

  488. as the world's

  489. true Lord

  490. and true king.

  491. You see,

  492. that little sketch

  493. that Saul makes

  494. in history

  495. of one who would

  496. be anointed

  497. and filled

  498. and sent out

  499. to ministry,

  500. it was just

  501. an echo

  502. of what God

  503. has done

  504. once and for all

  505. in Jesus Christ

  506. for us

  507. and for our salvation.

  508. And friends,

  509. as we look

  510. to him,

  511. not to ourselves,

  512. as we look

  513. to him

  514. with growing

  515. love

  516. and with growing

  517. trust,

  518. that's where

  519. our assurance

  520. comes from.

  521. It's like the song

  522. we often sing

  523. here at Trinity.

  524. Before the throne

  525. of God above,

  526. I have a strong

  527. and perfect plea.

  528. A great high priest

  529. whose name is love,

  530. whoever lives

  531. and pleads for me.

  532. My name

  533. is graven

  534. on his hands.

  535. My name

  536. is written

  537. on his heart.

  538. I know that

  539. while in heaven

  540. he stands,

  541. no tongue

  542. can bid me

  543. thence depart.

  544. Behold him there,

  545. the risen lamb,

  546. my perfect,

  547. spotless righteousness,

  548. the great

  549. unchangeable

  550. I am,

  551. the king

  552. of glory

  553. and of grace.

  554. One with himself

  555. I cannot die.

  556. My soul

  557. is purchased

  558. by his blood.

  559. My life

  560. is hid

  561. with Christ

  562. on high,

  563. with Christ

  564. my savior

  565. and my God.

  566. Friends,

  567. that's where

  568. assurance comes from.

  569. That's what

  570. the Holy Spirit

  571. will take

  572. in your heart

  573. and it will cause

  574. to well up

  575. into a deep

  576. confidence,

  577. not in yourself,

  578. but in him.

  579. So God

  580. doesn't want us

  581. to be timid

  582. or fearful.

  583. He wants us

  584. to look to Christ

  585. and know that

  586. we're his

  587. and that he is

  588. with us.

  589. It's a lesson

  590. in assurance.

  591. The last lesson

  592. we learn from this

  593. chapter is a lesson

  594. in dependence.

  595. Let's read the end

  596. of chapter 10

  597. starting in verse 17.

  598. Now Samuel

  599. called the people

  600. together to the Lord

  601. at Mizpah

  602. and he said

  603. to the people

  604. of Israel,

  605. thus says the Lord,

  606. the God of Israel,

  607. I brought up Israel

  608. out of Egypt

  609. and I delivered you

  610. from the hand

  611. of the Egyptians

  612. and from the hand

  613. of all the kingdoms

  614. that were oppressing you.

  615. But today you have

  616. rejected your God

  617. who saves you

  618. from all your calamities

  619. and your distresses

  620. and you have said to him,

  621. set a king over us.

  622. Now therefore present yourselves

  623. before the Lord

  624. by your tribes

  625. and by your thousands.

  626. And Samuel brought

  627. all the tribes

  628. of Israel near

  629. and the tribe

  630. of Benjamin

  631. was taken by Lot.

  632. He brought the tribe

  633. of Benjamin near

  634. by its clans

  635. and the clan

  636. of the Matrites

  637. was taken by Lot

  638. and Saul,

  639. the son of Kish

  640. was taken by Lot.

  641. But when they sought him,

  642. he could not be found.

  643. So they inquired again

  644. to the Lord,

  645. is there a man

  646. still to come?

  647. And the Lord said,

  648. behold,

  649. he's hidden himself

  650. among the baggage.

  651. Then they ran

  652. and took him from there

  653. and when he stood

  654. among the people,

  655. he was taller

  656. than any of the people

  657. from his shoulders upward.

  658. And Samuel said

  659. to all the people,

  660. do you see him

  661. whom the Lord has chosen?

  662. There's none like him

  663. among all the people

  664. and all the people shouted,

  665. long live the king.

  666. Then Samuel told the people

  667. the rights and duties

  668. of the kingship

  669. and he wrote them

  670. in a book

  671. and laid it up

  672. before the Lord.

  673. Then Samuel sent

  674. all the people away,

  675. each one to his home.

  676. Saul also went

  677. to his home at Gibeah

  678. and with him went

  679. men of valor

  680. whose hearts

  681. God had touched.

  682. But some worthless fellow

  683. said,

  684. how can this man save us?

  685. And they despised him

  686. and brought him no present.

  687. But he,

  688. that is Saul,

  689. held his peace.

  690. So I want to end

  691. just focusing on verse 22.

  692. You know,

  693. it's,

  694. the narrator doesn't say

  695. why Saul was hiding

  696. among the baggage.

  697. But it's one of those details

  698. that when you read this chapter

  699. you just can't forget.

  700. There's Saul

  701. whose head and shoulders

  702. above everyone else

  703. hiding.

  704. You know,

  705. we can only speculate

  706. what was going on

  707. in his mind

  708. and his heart.

  709. You would think

  710. that after the sort of

  711. powerful experiences

  712. that had just happened

  713. to him,

  714. he'd be ready

  715. to sort of take up

  716. this new role

  717. with courage.

  718. But he's hiding

  719. among the baggage.

  720. Maybe it was humility.

  721. You know,

  722. maybe it was

  723. some political prudence.

  724. He didn't want to

  725. sort of just

  726. jump in there.

  727. First king,

  728. who knows what was

  729. going to happen.

  730. You know,

  731. sadly,

  732. maybe it was simply

  733. unbelief.

  734. Maybe Saul doubted

  735. God would be with him

  736. after all.

  737. We just can't say.

  738. We don't know.

  739. But what we do learn

  740. from verse 22

  741. is that the people

  742. of God

  743. are totally

  744. dependent

  745. on the Lord.

  746. And here's what I mean.

  747. Verse 21 ends,

  748. when they sought him,

  749. that is Saul,

  750. he could not be found.

  751. Even after God

  752. confirms

  753. his choice

  754. of a king publicly

  755. through the casting

  756. of lots,

  757. the Lord

  758. has to practically

  759. take the people

  760. by the hand

  761. and lead them

  762. to Saul

  763. who's nowhere

  764. to be found,

  765. who's hiding

  766. among the baggage.

  767. God's got to

  768. take him

  769. the whole way.

  770. You see,

  771. friends,

  772. it's the Lord

  773. the whole time.

  774. When the people

  775. want a king

  776. for all the wrong reasons,

  777. God in his mercy

  778. still acts

  779. in his providence

  780. to send him a rescuer.

  781. When Saul's doubtful

  782. that God could want him,

  783. a mere Benjaminite,

  784. as king,

  785. God showers him

  786. with these

  787. undeniable assurances.

  788. And when at last

  789. the human king

  790. God has chosen

  791. is hiding,

  792. perhaps still

  793. riddled with doubts.

  794. God in his mercy

  795. brings the people

  796. to him.

  797. You see, friends,

  798. we are dependent

  799. on God

  800. from first to last.

  801. And we can do

  802. nothing apart from him.

  803. And that

  804. is completely

  805. and utterly

  806. good news.

  807. Because the God

  808. that we know

  809. in Jesus,

  810. the true king,

  811. is a God

  812. who's utterly dependable.

  813. These two chapters

  814. are all about God

  815. finding a king

  816. for his people

  817. and overcoming

  818. Saul's doubts.

  819. But in Jesus,

  820. we have a king

  821. who comes to find us.

  822. We don't have to go

  823. searching for him.

  824. He comes to search

  825. for us.

  826. So tonight,

  827. do you acknowledge

  828. that you need

  829. a king like that?

  830. Can you admit

  831. that you're needy,

  832. that you're sinful

  833. even,

  834. and that you need

  835. a savior?

  836. friend,

  837. friend,

  838. if you can admit

  839. those things,

  840. then you are so close

  841. to being in the most

  842. secure place

  843. possible.

  844. Because Jesus

  845. is a king

  846. who can be trusted.

  847. If you can admit

  848. that you're needy,

  849. then step

  850. into him

  851. in faith.

  852. we're an utterly

  853. dependent

  854. people.

  855. But what Samuel

  856. shows us here

  857. is that we have

  858. an utterly

  859. dependable God.

  860. Let's pray.

  861. God,

  862. we're thankful

  863. that you

  864. overcome

  865. our fearful

  866. and our timid

  867. hearts

  868. and that,

  869. God,

  870. you come

  871. to find us.

  872. So,

  873. Lord,

  874. I pray tonight

  875. that you would

  876. open the eyes

  877. and hearts

  878. of those

  879. who are seeking

  880. for you

  881. and help

  882. them to see,

  883. God,

  884. that you

  885. have been

  886. seeking them.

  887. Lord,

  888. help us to

  889. trust your

  890. good providence

  891. in our lives.

  892. Lord,

  893. grant us

  894. assurance,

  895. we pray,

  896. of the salvation

  897. that we have

  898. in Christ.

  899. Lord,

  900. and help us

  901. to be a joyfully

  902. dependent people

  903. in you.

  904. We ask this

  905. in Christ's name.

  906. Amen.

  907. The music team

  908. is going to come up.

  909. We're going to

  910. continue worshiping

  911. God together.

  912. Let's stand together.

  913. Well,

  914. it's typically

  915. our practice

  916. in the evening service

  917. to end with just

  918. some time of interaction

  919. and Q&A,

  920. but we're out of time.

  921. So,

  922. I will hang around

  923. up front

  924. if you have

  925. any questions

  926. and want to

  927. sort of

  928. banter

  929. about the passage.

  930. I'd be happy

  931. to do that.

  932. But let me just

  933. end with a couple

  934. quick announcements.

  935. I hope you got a

  936. bulletin

  937. on the way in.

  938. If not,

  939. grab one on the way out.

  940. There's a bunch

  941. of stuff going on

  942. on the way out.

  943. There's a bunch of stuff

  944. going on.

  945. I'll be happy to do that.

  946. There's a bunch of stuff

  947. going on.

  948. I'll be happy to do that.

  949. I'll be happy to do that.
