  1. Amen. If you're looking in a Bible, turn to 1 Samuel chapter 13. That's what we're going to be looking at tonight.

    1 Samuel 13 chapter mention

  2. If you're looking in one of the Pew Bibles, that's page 234, 1 Samuel chapter 13.

    1 Samuel 13 chapter mention

  3. It's a bit of a long chapter, so we're going to read it section by section and go through it.

  4. But as you're turning there, let me ask you this question. Have you ever been spiritually tested?

  5. Been in a situation where you're put under pressure? You find yourself in a situation where trusting and obeying God seems like the hardest thing in the world to do.

  6. Maybe you're dealing with a difficult or even a toxic environment at work, where your co-workers are constantly gossiping or cursing or cutting people down or slacking off

  7. or lying to the boss or whatever. And if you don't join in with what they're doing, you feel isolated.

  8. You get ostracized.

  9. Or maybe when you go home or go back to wherever you're staying, there's somebody who provokes and irritates you.

  10. Maybe it's your roommate who never cleans the bathroom, never washes the dishes.

  11. Maybe it's your brother or sister who always criticizes and teases you.

  12. Maybe it's your husband or wife who has some annoying habit that they don't seem to care enough to stop.

  13. One of your kids is in a particularly difficult stage.

  14. Or somebody else is just getting on your nerves all the time.

  15. And it just seems to go on and on.

  16. And it doesn't seem to get any better.

  17. And so you're tempted to lash out in anger or to withdraw in bitterness because you feel frustrated and disrespected.

  18. Maybe you're battling an addiction.

  19. Drugs, alcohol, pornography, compulsive eating.

  20. And you're dealing with cravings.

  21. And the cravings feel overwhelming.

  22. And maybe your sponsor or your accountability partner is falling into the same stuff as you.

  23. Maybe they've fallen off the wagon completely.

  24. And maybe you think it's just not worth it to fight anymore.

  25. Maybe I should just give in.

  26. Indulge a little bit.

  27. Now in this passage what we see is King Saul being tested.

  28. Put under pressure.

  29. So let's read.

  30. Chapter 13.

  31. I'm going to read verse 1 to 8 to start.

  32. Saul lived for one year and then became king.

  33. And when he had reigned for two years over Israel, Saul chose 3,000 men of Israel.

  34. 2,000 were with Saul and Michmash and the hill country of Bethel.

  35. And 1,000 were with Jonathan and Gibeah of Benjamin.

  36. The rest of the people he sent home, every man to his tent.

  37. Jonathan defeated the garrison of the Philistines that was at Geba.

  38. And the Philistines heard of it.

  39. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land saying,

  40. Let the Hebrews hear.

  41. And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines.

  42. And also that Israel had become a stench to the Philistines.

  43. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.

  44. And the Philistines mustered to fight with Israel 30,000 chariots and 6,000 horsemen and troops like the sand on the seashore in multitude.

  45. They came up and encamped in Michmash to the east of Beth-Avon.

  46. When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble, for the people were hard-pressed,

  47. the people hid themselves in caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns.

  48. And some Hebrews crossed the fords of the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead.

  49. Saul was still at Gilgal.

  50. And all the people followed him, trembling.

  51. He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel.

  52. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal.

  53. And the people were scattering from him.

  54. Now what we've seen in the last few chapters of this book is Saul rising to power.

  55. So he was chosen by the people.

  56. He was anointed by the prophet Samuel.

  57. And he was used powerfully by God to defeat Nahash in chapter 11,

  58. who is the king of the Ammonites, who is coming against the people of Israel and attacking them

  59. and causing all kinds of chaos.

  60. The beginning of chapter 13, he begins his reign as king.

  61. The first verse is sort of a typical verse that's used in the rest of the Old Testament

  62. where it talks about the kings, where it says they, you know, lived for so many years

  63. and then they became king and were reigned for so many years.

  64. Now if you have different translations of chapter 13, verse 1,

  65. there's a little question about how many years exactly did he reign.

  66. I'm not going to get into that right now.

  67. If you want to ask about that in the question and answer at the end,

  68. I can explain that a little bit more.

  69. Acts chapter 13 says he reigned 40 years in total.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  70. It seems like perhaps this is just saying this happened two years after he started to reign.

  71. But anyway, how long he reigned is not that important.

  72. But he, so he faced, let's see, back in chapter 11, right, he had faced Nahash, king of the Ammonites,

  73. coming in from the east, and God had used him to push him back.

  74. Verse, but now the Philistines were coming from the west.

  75. So he'd been attacked from one side, and then he got attacked from the other side.

  76. And so verse 2 tells us he gathered an army, not a huge army, but a decent one,

  77. and sent the rest of the guys home to be with their families.

  78. Verse 3 goes on.

  79. His son Jonathan, Jonathan is Saul's son, won the first victory over the Philistines.

  80. The Philistines got mad, and so Saul called all the people to join him.

  81. So basically, they have these enemies who are coming at them, and Jonathan wins this little victory,

  82. and so they get even madder.

  83. It's like stirring up a hornet's nest.

  84. And so Saul says, let's come together.

  85. And then verse 5 we see that the Philistines are this huge army.

  86. 30,000 chariots, 6,000 horsemen, troops like the sand on the seashore, too many to count.

  87. I mean, just imagine yourself.

  88. You know, Saul has 3,000 people, or maybe it's three companies of people,

  89. but 3,000 people, and he faces 30,000 chariots, 6,000 horsemen, and so many troops they can't even count.

  90. He's totally outnumbered.

  91. And so the people get afraid.

  92. Verse 6 and 7, it says some of them basically play dead.

  93. They go hide in caves and tombs and cisterns.

  94. They try to hide in the ground because they're just totally freaked out.

  95. Some of them ran away.

  96. They go east across the Jordan River.

  97. So they basically ran away.

  98. And then the people who stayed with Saul at Gilgal says they were trembling, trembling with fear.

  99. So facing this overwhelmingly powerful enemy and feeling like, how in the world are we going to defend ourselves?

  100. In verse 8, we see what Saul does.

  101. So first he waited.

  102. Verse 8 says he's waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel.

  103. Now, Samuel was the prophet of God who had anointed Saul king, leader of the Israelites.

  104. And Samuel and Saul were meant to lead the people of Israel sort of as a team.

  105. Samuel would basically hear God's word and give the direction to Saul.

  106. And Saul would lead the people of Israel in carrying it out.

  107. Sort of like we have different branches of government.

  108. And the president is sort of the executive office to carry out what the legislator and the judiciary decides.

  109. A little bit like that.

  110. So Saul and Samuel were supposed to work as a team.

  111. And Saul was supposed to listen to Samuel because Samuel was a prophet who was hearing God's word.

  112. And it seems like Samuel had made an arrangement with Saul.

  113. So if you'll actually look back at chapter 10, verse 8.

  114. This is a little bit further back.

  115. But Samuel says to Saul, in chapter 10, verse 8, he says,

  116. Go down before me to Gilgal.

  117. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings.

  118. That was offerings of dedication to God and sacrifice peace offerings to celebrate God's provision.

  119. Then he says, seven days you shall wait until I come to you and show you what you shall do.

  120. So it seems like there's a similar arrangement going on here.

  121. Samuel basically said, wait for me.

  122. You know, basically if there's big trouble, I'll be there within seven days.

  123. You know, that was pretty fast when you're traveling the way they did back then.

  124. So Samuel would come within a certain time and give Saul directions.

  125. Then Saul would carry it out.

  126. That's how they would lead as a team.

  127. But verse 8 says, Samuel didn't show up.

  128. And it seems like it was the middle of the seventh day.

  129. Saul's thinking, man, people are afraid.

  130. Some of the people have run away.

  131. Some of the people are hiding in caves.

  132. And the people who are with me are completely afraid.

  133. And Samuel's not showing up.

  134. And he said he'd be here.

  135. Here's where we see Saul being tested.

  136. Because he knows what he's supposed to do.

  137. He's supposed to wait for Samuel to come.

  138. That was the plan that God had made with him.

  139. That Samuel had made.

  140. As the prophet of God.

  141. But he's in a situation where he's put under pressure.

  142. He's got enemies coming from the outside.

  143. And then he's got his own people who are...

  144. Don't believe...

  145. They just...

  146. They're just losing hope.

  147. So what's he going to do?

  148. Well...

  149. You know...

  150. I mean...

  151. Think about that.

  152. Have you been in a similar situation?

  153. You feel pressure from the outside?

  154. You feel pressure on the inside?

  155. You feel pressure from the people who you think are close to you and are on your team?

  156. And some of them seem to be turning tail and running away.

  157. And you think, what am I going to do?

  158. Verse 9.

  159. So Saul said,

  160. Bring the burnt offering here to me.

  161. And the peace offerings.

  162. And he offered the burnt offering.

  163. As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came.

  164. And Saul went out to meet him and greet him.

  165. Samuel said,

  166. What have you done?

  167. And Saul said,

  168. When I saw that the people were scattering from me and that you did not come within the days appointed,

  169. and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash,

  170. I said,

  171. Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal,

  172. and I have not sought the favor of the Lord.

  173. So I forced myself and offered the burnt offering.

  174. And Samuel said to Saul,

  175. You have done foolishly.

  176. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God,

  177. with which he commanded you.

  178. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.

  179. But now your kingdom shall not continue.

  180. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart.

  181. And the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people,

  182. because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.

  183. And Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal.

  184. The rest of the people went up after Saul to meet the army.

  185. They went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin.

  186. Now, when you first read this, you read verse 9,

  187. you might think,

  188. So why does it matter that Saul offered the burnt offering?

  189. You know, I don't get it.

  190. Why does Samuel get so mad at him?

  191. Right?

  192. It just doesn't seem to make sense to us.

  193. Why does he offer the burnt offering anyway?

  194. But the problem was,

  195. Samuel and Saul had a clear arrangement.

  196. They were supposed to lead as a team.

  197. And Saul was supposed to listen to Samuel,

  198. because Samuel was a prophet who was given God's word.

  199. And that was the one clear command that Saul had.

  200. And it's the one thing they didn't do.

  201. He didn't wait until Samuel came.

  202. He went ahead on his own.

  203. Other people were terrified, and so Saul panicked.

  204. And you know,

  205. sometimes fear

  206. can lead us to do all kinds of foolish things.

  207. And that's what Saul did.

  208. What Saul did is he took matters into his own hands,

  209. and he did what Samuel was supposed to do,

  210. to offer the burnt offering.

  211. The burnt offering was basically a sacrifice

  212. of dedication or consecration to God,

  213. sort of expressing submission to God.

  214. The problem was,

  215. he was offering this,

  216. making this offering,

  217. going through this ritual

  218. that was supposed to symbolize

  219. submission to God,

  220. but he wasn't following the directions of Samuel,

  221. who had said,

  222. wait till I come,

  223. and I'll tell you what to do.

  224. Instead of trusting

  225. and holding on to God's promise

  226. when it seemed like everything else

  227. was falling apart,

  228. Saul latched onto this ritual.

  229. And he believed that the ritual,

  230. the burnt offering,

  231. and the peace offerings,

  232. was the key

  233. to winning the victory.

  234. You know,

  235. sometimes that's what fear

  236. can drive us to do.

  237. It can drive us to

  238. latch onto rituals,

  239. or even superstitions.

  240. Even some things that God hasn't

  241. commanded us to do at all.

  242. But we hold onto these things.

  243. Lucky charms.

  244. Whatever it might be.

  245. Little patterns.

  246. Things that make us feel

  247. some kind of peace.

  248. Make us feel like

  249. it's going to be okay.

  250. But those are really

  251. substitutes for God himself.

  252. So that's the problem

  253. of what Saul did.

  254. Saul said,

  255. you know,

  256. I can't trust that God's

  257. going to come through for me,

  258. so I've got to

  259. take matters into my own hands.

  260. And I've got to act

  261. because I don't believe

  262. that God's going to

  263. do anything for me.

  264. And that was the beginning

  265. of Saul's downfall.

  266. You see,

  267. what Saul did here,

  268. he did the very same thing

  269. that Adam and Eve did

  270. way back in the Garden of Eden.

  271. You know,

  272. the one clear command

  273. that God gave Adam and Eve

  274. was what?

  275. He said,

  276. you can eat any tree,

  277. but don't eat from

  278. this one tree,

  279. the tree of knowledge

  280. of good and evil.

  281. And if you eat of it,

  282. you will surely die.

  283. And then Adam and Eve

  284. are going for a walk one day

  285. and they happen to be

  286. going near the tree

  287. and Eve gets into

  288. a conversation

  289. with this serpent

  290. who says,

  291. who says you shouldn't

  292. eat from this tree?

  293. You won't really die.

  294. Actually,

  295. it'll make you wise.

  296. It'll make you like God.

  297. It'll give you something

  298. that you don't have already.

  299. And so she listens

  300. to that serpent

  301. and she says,

  302. hmm,

  303. well,

  304. let me judge for myself.

  305. The fruit looks good.

  306. Looks like it'll give us

  307. wisdom.

  308. Looks ripe.

  309. Let me try it.

  310. Adam's standing right there

  311. beside her.

  312. She gives some to Adam.

  313. Adam's been just quiet

  314. the whole time.

  315. And he eats it too.

  316. And what happens?

  317. Everything falls apart.

  318. Because that was the one tree

  319. that represented

  320. that God was the owner

  321. of the garden.

  322. And they were trying

  323. to take over God's place

  324. as the owners of the garden

  325. instead of just the managers.

  326. And everything fell apart

  327. after that.

  328. Right?

  329. They ran away and hid.

  330. And God came to them

  331. and said,

  332. where are you?

  333. Just like Samuel

  334. came to Saul

  335. with a simple question.

  336. What have you done?

  337. And then,

  338. just like Adam,

  339. Saul starts making excuses.

  340. Right?

  341. What did Adam say?

  342. She made me do it.

  343. The woman you gave me,

  344. she made me do it.

  345. That's what Adam said

  346. back in the garden.

  347. What does Saul say here?

  348. Verse 11.

  349. The people were running away.

  350. You didn't come.

  351. You were late.

  352. So I didn't want to wait

  353. for you any longer.

  354. The Philistines

  355. are coming to get me.

  356. And then he says,

  357. so I made,

  358. I forced myself.

  359. In other words,

  360. I did this reluctantly.

  361. Saul makes all kinds of excuses.

  362. He blames everybody else.

  363. The Philistines,

  364. Samuel,

  365. his own people,

  366. he blames everybody else.

  367. He doesn't

  368. take responsibility.

  369. He doesn't confess his sin.

  370. He doesn't say,

  371. I'm sorry.

  372. I was wrong.

  373. That's the one thing

  374. he doesn't say.

  375. You see,

  376. Saul's failure here

  377. wasn't just

  378. that he disobeyed

  379. the initial arrangement

  380. with Samuel.

  381. But it's also

  382. that he

  383. responded

  384. to Samuel

  385. confronting him

  386. by blaming

  387. everyone else

  388. and by refusing

  389. to say,

  390. I was wrong.

  391. I'm sorry.

  392. You know,

  393. maybe,

  394. maybe you failed

  395. in a time of temptation.

  396. Maybe like Saul,

  397. you've been tested,

  398. you've been put under pressure

  399. and it was a hard situation

  400. and you

  401. turned away from God.

  402. and you latched

  403. onto something else

  404. and you know it.

  405. And maybe someone

  406. confronted you.

  407. Maybe someone

  408. has come to you

  409. and they said,

  410. look at what you did.

  411. You really messed up.

  412. That really wasn't right.

  413. How have you responded

  414. to that?

  415. Do you know

  416. that's God's mercy?

  417. Sometimes we don't think

  418. it's God's mercy.

  419. You know,

  420. when my wife

  421. comes to me

  422. and says,

  423. Greg,

  424. you've got to

  425. stop doing this

  426. or

  427. that wasn't really

  428. kind what you just said

  429. or

  430. you were being

  431. impatient

  432. with our kids.

  433. I don't see that

  434. as God's mercy

  435. coming to me,

  436. right?

  437. I'm defensive.

  438. I'm like,

  439. no,

  440. but

  441. do you realize

  442. how I feel?

  443. Do you realize

  444. how many people

  445. I've had to deal with

  446. already today?

  447. Do you realize

  448. how tired I am?

  449. Do you realize

  450. how early I had

  451. to get up this morning

  452. because I got up

  453. with the kids

  454. when they woke up

  455. at 5,

  456. 10 a.m.?

  457. That's my response.

  458. Often.

  459. Like Saul.

  460. Like Adam.

  461. I get defensive.

  462. I don't want to,

  463. I don't want to hear

  464. criticism.

  465. Even when it's

  466. by the one person

  467. who loves me

  468. more than anybody

  469. else in the world.

  470. But it's God's mercy

  471. because he wants us

  472. to come to that place

  473. where we say,

  474. I did it.

  475. I'm sorry.

  476. I was wrong.

  477. And he wants us

  478. to come to that place

  479. not so we can beat

  480. ourselves up

  481. and stay in a place

  482. of despair,

  483. but so we can

  484. come to him

  485. and be forgiven

  486. and be restored.

  487. That's the good news.

  488. But Saul doesn't,

  489. Saul never gets there

  490. because he stays

  491. in that defensive,

  492. self-justifying place.

  493. And the response

  494. from Samuel,

  495. Samuel basically says,

  496. your kingdom

  497. isn't going to last.

  498. You're not going to have

  499. a dynasty

  500. that goes on and on

  501. forever and ever.

  502. God's going to choose

  503. someone else

  504. to replace you.

  505. someone who has

  506. no relation to you.

  507. And then Samuel

  508. gets up and leaves.

  509. Let's go on

  510. and read the rest

  511. of the chapter

  512. starting at the end

  513. of verse 15.

  514. We'll see the results

  515. of Saul's response.

  516. Saul numbered

  517. the people

  518. who were present

  519. with him,

  520. about 600 men

  521. compared to 3,000

  522. at the beginning.

  523. So it's a lot

  524. smaller by then.

  525. And Saul

  526. and Jonathan,

  527. his son,

  528. and the people

  529. who were present

  530. with them

  531. stayed in Geba of Benjamin,

  532. but the Philistines

  533. encamped in Michmash.

  534. And raiders

  535. came out of the camp

  536. of the Philistines

  537. in three companies.

  538. One company

  539. turned toward Ophrah,

  540. which was in the north,

  541. in the land of Shual.

  542. Another company

  543. turned toward Beth Horon,

  544. which was to the west,

  545. and another company

  546. turned southeast

  547. toward the border

  548. that looks down

  549. on the valley

  550. of Zeboiim

  551. toward the wilderness.

  552. So basically,

  553. we see the Philistines

  554. are just swarming

  555. throughout the whole country.

  556. They're going

  557. in every direction,

  558. north, west, southeast.

  559. They're taking over the place.

  560. Verse 19.

  561. Now there was no blacksmiths

  562. to be found

  563. throughout all the land

  564. of Israel,

  565. for the Philistines said,

  566. lest the Hebrews

  567. make themselves swords

  568. or spears.

  569. But every one

  570. of the Israelites

  571. went down to the Philistines

  572. to sharpen his plowshare,

  573. his mattock,

  574. his axe,

  575. or his sickle,

  576. and the charge

  577. was two-thirds

  578. of a shekel

  579. for the plowshares

  580. and the mattocks

  581. and a third of a shekel

  582. for sharpening the axes

  583. and setting the goats.

  584. You can ask about the prices

  585. if you're interested.

  586. But on the day of the battle,

  587. there was neither sword

  588. nor spear

  589. found in the hand

  590. of any of the people

  591. with Saul and Jonathan,

  592. but Saul and Jonathan,

  593. his son,

  594. had them,

  595. and the garrison

  596. of the Philistines

  597. went out

  598. to the pass of Michmash.

  599. The point of this

  600. last paragraph

  601. is the people of Israel

  602. are now powerless.

  603. They're powerless

  604. to defend themselves.

  605. They have no weapons.

  606. They can't even sharpen

  607. their farm tools

  608. without going

  609. and paying

  610. the Philistines.

  611. They become almost

  612. completely dependent

  613. and helpless.

  614. And you know,

  615. that's what happens

  616. when we fail

  617. to obey the Lord

  618. and when we refuse

  619. to admit our guilt.

  620. It's a warning.

  621. We gradually lose

  622. our spiritual vitality

  623. and energy.

  624. And when we...

  625. First, it seems...

  626. First, we chose

  627. to indulge

  628. our sinful appetite

  629. and then gradually

  630. more and more

  631. we become slaves

  632. to our sin.

  633. Chapter 13

  634. is the beginning

  635. of a downhill slide

  636. for Saul

  637. and for his kingdom.

  638. And what we see

  639. is that Saul

  640. won't be

  641. the promised Messiah.

  642. He's not

  643. going to be

  644. the promised deliverer

  645. of God's people

  646. because he failed

  647. the test.

  648. And when he was

  649. confronted with his failure,

  650. he refused to admit

  651. his guilt.

  652. He didn't own up to it.

  653. So he becomes powerless.

  654. And that's a warning

  655. to us.

  656. But you know,

  657. thankfully,

  658. the story of the Bible

  659. doesn't end here.

  660. Aren't you thankful

  661. that the story of the Bible

  662. doesn't end here

  663. and in other passages

  664. like this

  665. which show us our failure?

  666. Verse 14

  667. gives us a word of hope.

  668. It says,

  669. The Lord has sought out

  670. a man

  671. after his own heart.

  672. In other words,

  673. according to God's own will.

  674. God is seeking out

  675. a man to lead his people.

  676. And soon,

  677. in a couple of weeks,

  678. as we go through

  679. this book of Samuel,

  680. we'll see who it is.

  681. It's David.

  682. And David is that king

  683. that God promises.

  684. But then,

  685. you know what happens?

  686. You keep reading

  687. the book of Samuel.

  688. You go into 2 Samuel

  689. and you see that David

  690. fails too in some ways.

  691. And David repents

  692. unlike Saul.

  693. He confesses his sin.

  694. That's one of the differences

  695. between David and Saul

  696. is David owns up

  697. to his mistakes

  698. where Saul never does.

  699. But the good news

  700. of the Bible

  701. is not just about David.

  702. David,

  703. who lived a long time ago,

  704. but about David's

  705. great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson,

  706. Jesus.

  707. Right?

  708. Jesus is

  709. the promised deliverer,

  710. the Messiah.

  711. And in the New Testament,

  712. it says that Jesus

  713. has been tested,

  714. he has been tempted

  715. in every respect.

  716. Every kind of temptation

  717. that you face,

  718. whatever it looks like,

  719. Jesus has faced

  720. every kind of temptation

  721. and testing

  722. that we face

  723. as human beings.

  724. Jesus.

  725. And it says,

  726. he has been tempted

  727. as we are,

  728. yet

  729. without sin.

  730. Jesus faced

  731. the most intense

  732. pressure

  733. imaginable.

  734. He was in the desert,

  735. hungry

  736. and alone,

  737. and he was tempted

  738. by the devil himself.

  739. The devil says,

  740. hey,

  741. you must be hungry.

  742. Why don't you use

  743. your power

  744. to turn these stones

  745. into bread?

  746. Why don't you

  747. make your life

  748. easy for yourself

  749. and use your power

  750. to make yourself

  751. comfortable?

  752. And Jesus says,

  753. no.

  754. Man doesn't live

  755. by bread alone,

  756. but by every word

  757. that comes

  758. from the mouth of God.

  759. He says,

  760. I've come

  761. to live a life

  762. in dependence

  763. on God's word,

  764. not to use my power

  765. to make myself

  766. more comfortable

  767. and get whatever

  768. I want right away.

  769. And Satan says,

  770. well,

  771. you know,

  772. not many people

  773. really believe in you.

  774. Why don't you

  775. show off

  776. and dazzle them all?

  777. Why don't you

  778. jump off the temple

  779. and

  780. call on the angels

  781. to rescue you

  782. so that you can

  783. say,

  784. ta-da!

  785. I'm Superman.

  786. Look,

  787. believe in me.

  788. And Jesus says,

  789. don't put the Lord

  790. your God to the test.

  791. That's not what

  792. I've come to do either.

  793. And then the devil says,

  794. look,

  795. see all the kingdoms

  796. of the world.

  797. All the kingdoms

  798. of the world

  799. and all their glory

  800. and all their wealth

  801. and all their power

  802. just bow down to me

  803. and I'll give it to you.

  804. It'll be so easy.

  805. I'll give you everything.

  806. Just swear loyalty to me.

  807. And Jesus says,

  808. worship the Lord your God

  809. and serve him only.

  810. Of course,

  811. the greatest test

  812. that Jesus faced

  813. was when he

  814. was in a garden

  815. of Gethsemane

  816. and his disciples

  817. had gone to sleep

  818. and he knelt down

  819. and prayed.

  820. He prayed,

  821. Father,

  822. if there's any other way,

  823. take this cup

  824. away from me.

  825. But not my will,

  826. but yours be done.

  827. You see,

  828. Jesus knew all the time

  829. that God's will

  830. for him

  831. was that he would

  832. lay down his life

  833. on a cross

  834. and bear the sin

  835. of the world.

  836. That was a heavy burden.

  837. That was the most

  838. intense pressure imaginable

  839. to take all of our sin

  840. on his shoulders

  841. and to take the punishment

  842. that we deserved

  843. and to hang there

  844. on the cross.

  845. We can hardly even imagine

  846. what it was like physically,

  847. let alone

  848. emotionally

  849. and spiritually

  850. to hang there

  851. and to trust

  852. and obey

  853. God the Father

  854. all the way to the end.

  855. But he did it.

  856. He did it for you.

  857. He did it for me.

  858. He did it for us.

  859. Jesus held on.

  860. He wasn't like Saul.

  861. Saul gave in

  862. and it all went downhill.

  863. Jesus

  864. persevered

  865. to the very end.

  866. It says

  867. to bring

  868. many sons

  869. and daughters

  870. with him

  871. to glory.

  872. That's why he did it.

  873. To bring us

  874. with him

  875. to glory

  876. so that our sins

  877. could be forgiven

  878. and so we could be brought

  879. from death

  880. to life.

  881. So we could be brought

  882. out of the pit

  883. and into

  884. his presence

  885. forevermore.

  886. So Hebrews says this.

  887. It says

  888. we don't have

  889. a high priest

  890. who is unable

  891. to sympathize

  892. with our weaknesses

  893. but one who

  894. in every respect

  895. has been tempted

  896. as we are

  897. yet without sin.

  898. So let us then

  899. with confidence

  900. draw near

  901. to his throne

  902. of grace

  903. that we may receive

  904. mercy

  905. and find grace

  906. to help

  907. in our time

  908. of need.

  909. So let me come back

  910. to the question

  911. I asked at the beginning.

  912. Where are you

  913. being spiritually

  914. tested?

  915. Is that work?

  916. Is it

  917. at home

  918. or wherever

  919. you're staying

  920. right now?

  921. Are you feeling

  922. impatient

  923. like Saul

  924. and wondering

  925. if God's ever

  926. going to

  927. do anything

  928. for you?

  929. you know

  930. you know

  931. Jesus

  932. if you

  933. have

  934. turned to

  935. Jesus

  936. and put

  937. your faith

  938. in him

  939. the Bible

  940. says he will

  941. never leave

  942. you nor

  943. forsake you.

  944. When you walk

  945. into work

  946. tomorrow morning

  947. or whenever

  948. you go there

  949. Jesus

  950. is living

  951. in you

  952. by his

  953. Holy Spirit.

  954. You are

  955. not alone.

  956. When you have

  957. to deal

  958. with

  959. all that

  960. gossiping

  961. or cursing

  962. or dishonest

  963. behavior

  964. or whatever

  965. you're dealing

  966. with at your

  967. work

  968. Jesus

  969. is right

  970. there with

  971. you.

  972. You are

  973. not alone

  974. and he

  975. will strengthen

  976. you and he

  977. will empower

  978. you to

  979. be faithful

  980. to him

  981. and to

  982. put your

  983. hope in him

  984. and know

  985. that you

  986. are not

  987. alone

  988. there.

  989. Maybe

  990. it's at

  991. home

  992. or wherever

  993. you're staying

  994. and the

  995. people around

  996. you,

  997. the people

  998. you're living

  999. with,

  1000. just drive

  1001. you up

  1002. a wall.

  1003. You know,

  1004. do you know

  1005. that Jesus

  1006. knows how

  1007. that feels

  1008. like?

  1009. Because Jesus

  1010. dwells within

  1011. every Christian

  1012. believer.

  1013. Do you know

  1014. what Jesus

  1015. has to deal

  1016. with every

  1017. day?

  1018. Think of

  1019. all the

  1020. worst things

  1021. you've said

  1022. in the last

  1023. year.

  1024. All the

  1025. crazy things

  1026. you've done

  1027. or that

  1028. you've seen

  1029. other people

  1030. do who

  1031. believe in

  1032. Jesus.

  1033. Jesus has

  1034. had to deal

  1035. with all

  1036. of those

  1037. very personally

  1038. because he

  1039. lives in

  1040. those people.

  1041. And he

  1042. doesn't give

  1043. up on us.

  1044. He's

  1045. patient with

  1046. us.

  1047. And sometimes

  1048. he sends

  1049. someone to

  1050. confront us

  1051. and say,

  1052. what have

  1053. you done?

  1054. But he

  1055. says that to

  1056. us out of

  1057. his love

  1058. because he

  1059. loves us

  1060. and he's

  1061. going to

  1062. bear with

  1063. us.

  1064. And he's

  1065. going to

  1066. carry us

  1067. through.

  1068. So that's

  1069. the kind of

  1070. savior we

  1071. have.

  1072. That's the

  1073. kind of

  1074. king we

  1075. have.

  1076. Not a

  1077. king like

  1078. Saul here,

  1079. but we

  1080. have King

  1081. Jesus.

  1082. Let's

  1083. pray.

  1084. Lord Jesus,

  1085. we thank

  1086. you that

  1087. you are

  1088. faithful,

  1089. that you

  1090. are faithful

  1091. even to the

  1092. point of

  1093. death on

  1094. the cross

  1095. for us.

  1096. And we

  1097. thank you

  1098. that you

  1099. are faithful

  1100. to us,

  1101. that you

  1102. dwell in

  1103. us by

  1104. your Holy

  1105. Spirit.

  1106. So we

  1107. pray that

  1108. you would

  1109. help us

  1110. where we

  1111. are facing

  1112. temptations

  1113. and trials

  1114. and testings.

  1115. Lord, I

  1116. pray that

  1117. we would

  1118. know that

  1119. we are

  1120. not alone.

  1121. I pray that

  1122. we would

  1123. not act

  1124. in

  1125. panic

  1126. or fear

  1127. or act

  1128. as if

  1129. you aren't

  1130. there

  1131. because you

  1132. are.

  1133. You were,

  1134. you are.

  1135. Lord, thank

  1136. you that

  1137. you are

  1138. the God

  1139. of second

  1140. chances

  1141. that you,

  1142. Lord, as

  1143. Samuel came

  1144. to Saul

  1145. and confronted

  1146. him and

  1147. gave him

  1148. an opportunity

  1149. to acknowledge

  1150. his sin.

  1151. Lord, as

  1152. later on

  1153. you would

  1154. send the

  1155. prophet Nathan

  1156. to David

  1157. to confront

  1158. him.

  1159. Lord, you

  1160. call us

  1161. to turn

  1162. from our

  1163. sin and to

  1164. repent and

  1165. to confess

  1166. and to say

  1167. I was wrong.

  1168. I'm sorry.

  1169. Lord, thank

  1170. you that

  1171. when we do

  1172. that, when we

  1173. confess our

  1174. sins, you

  1175. are faithful

  1176. and just

  1177. to forgive

  1178. us and to

  1179. purify us

  1180. from all

  1181. unrighteousness

  1182. so that we

  1183. can continue

  1184. walking with

  1185. you and know

  1186. that we are

  1187. not alone.

  1188. We pray that

  1189. we would know

  1190. that tonight

  1191. in Jesus'

  1192. name.

  1193. Amen.

  1194. Amen.

  1195. We're going

  1196. to sing one

  1197. more song to

  1198. close and

  1199. then we'll

  1200. have about

  1201. five minutes

  1202. where you

  1203. can ask

  1204. questions so

  1205. if you have

  1206. questions or

  1207. thoughts you

  1208. can think

  1209. about those

  1210. as well.

  1211. We've got

  1212. about five

  1213. minutes.

  1214. If you have

  1215. a question

  1216. feel free to

  1217. raise your

  1218. hand or

  1219. brief comment

  1220. and I'd love

  1221. to hear it

  1222. and I'll do

  1223. the best I

  1224. can to

  1225. respond.

  1226. this is a

  1227. time when we

  1228. can interact

  1229. a little bit

  1230. over what

  1231. we've just

  1232. talked about.

  1233. Any questions?

  1234. Anyone?

  1235. Anyone?

  1236. Anyone?

  1237. Anyone?

  1238. Anyone?

  1239. Anyone?

  1240. Anyone?

  1241. Jonathan?

  1242. I just

  1243. have an

  1244. obligation

  1245. to talk

  1246. about it

  1247. all.

  1248. It seems

  1249. like the

  1250. punishment

  1251. that Saul

  1252. got seems

  1253. so strong

  1254. when you

  1255. compare the

  1256. way he's

  1257. portrayed to

  1258. some of

  1259. the other

  1260. kings of

  1261. Israel

  1262. later on

  1263. who

  1264. basically

  1265. didn't listen

  1266. the prophet

  1267. at all

  1268. didn't care

  1269. about the

  1270. prophet

  1271. at all

  1272. and you

  1273. know

  1274. so I

  1275. was just

  1276. kind of

  1277. surprised to

  1278. hear the

  1279. reason why

  1280. his lineage

  1281. was cut

  1282. off

  1283. when it

  1284. seems like

  1285. such a

  1286. minor

  1287. thing

  1288. compared to

  1289. the other

  1290. kings.

  1291. Yeah.

  1292. Yeah.

  1293. So basically

  1294. Saul's punishment

  1295. seems pretty

  1296. strong for

  1297. what he did.

  1298. You know,

  1299. he sort of

  1300. gave in under

  1301. pressure and

  1302. then he got

  1303. his whole

  1304. kingdom taken

  1305. away.

  1306. So and

  1307. then other

  1308. kings did

  1309. a lot

  1310. worse things

  1311. and they

  1312. didn't seem

  1313. to have

  1314. as bad

  1315. a punishment.

  1316. So what's

  1317. going on

  1318. here?

  1319. So one

  1320. thing you'll

  1321. see is

  1322. that Saul's

  1323. kingdom is

  1324. not actually

  1325. taken away

  1326. from him

  1327. here.

  1328. What Samuel

  1329. says to him

  1330. here is that

  1331. your kingdom

  1332. won't endure

  1333. forever.

  1334. So what

  1335. we'll see is

  1336. Saul's son

  1337. Jonathan does

  1338. not become a

  1339. king, does

  1340. not become

  1341. leader of

  1342. Israel.

  1343. God chooses

  1344. David.

  1345. He goes to

  1346. a whole other

  1347. family line.

  1348. And so

  1349. what Saul

  1350. lost here in

  1351. this chapter

  1352. was particularly

  1353. that legacy

  1354. of his

  1355. family carrying

  1356. on this

  1357. role of

  1358. the king

  1359. or leader

  1360. of Israel.

  1361. And then

  1362. what happens

  1363. as we can

  1364. and we'll see

  1365. this over the

  1366. next couple

  1367. weeks is

  1368. that Saul

  1369. sort of keeps

  1370. going downhill.

  1371. Saul.

  1372. So Saul

  1373. starts, it's

  1374. interesting, it

  1375. starts with

  1376. this sin that

  1377. you think, is

  1378. it really such

  1379. a big thing

  1380. that he offered

  1381. that burnt

  1382. offering and

  1383. he went ahead

  1384. without Samuel

  1385. and he didn't

  1386. listen to the

  1387. prophet.

  1388. But you know,

  1389. isn't that how

  1390. sin often

  1391. starts?

  1392. Sin often

  1393. starts with

  1394. things that we

  1395. think are

  1396. sort of

  1397. insignificant.

  1398. you know,

  1399. not listening

  1400. to God's

  1401. word,

  1402. not being

  1403. in fellowship

  1404. with other

  1405. Christians and

  1406. just going

  1407. it alone.

  1408. And then

  1409. it sort of

  1410. grows and

  1411. it gradually

  1412. goes.

  1413. I mean,

  1414. an addiction

  1415. is a great

  1416. example, right?

  1417. Nobody picks

  1418. up their first

  1419. cigarette and

  1420. says, I'm

  1421. going to smoke

  1422. for the next

  1423. 30 years and

  1424. get lung

  1425. cancer.

  1426. nobody does,

  1427. right?

  1428. And most of

  1429. the time people

  1430. smoke their

  1431. first cigarette

  1432. and they're

  1433. like, ah,

  1434. it doesn't,

  1435. ah, it

  1436. makes me

  1437. cough, right?

  1438. But where do

  1439. you, how do

  1440. you get to that

  1441. point where

  1442. you're like,

  1443. man, I need

  1444. two packs a

  1445. day, right?

  1446. And isn't

  1447. it that, isn't

  1448. that true with

  1449. all kinds of

  1450. sins, not just

  1451. the things that

  1452. we think of as

  1453. addictions, but

  1454. things like

  1455. pride,

  1456. pride, not

  1457. wanting to,

  1458. just wanting

  1459. to do things

  1460. my own way

  1461. and I don't

  1462. really want to

  1463. listen to

  1464. anybody else's

  1465. advice.

  1466. And that

  1467. sometimes,

  1468. sometimes that's

  1469. the root issue

  1470. when, and

  1471. down the line

  1472. it causes all

  1473. kinds of

  1474. chaos and

  1475. relationships

  1476. break apart

  1477. and it goes

  1478. back to that

  1479. root issue

  1480. of pride.

  1481. pride.

  1482. So often, I

  1483. would say, sin

  1484. often starts

  1485. in ways that

  1486. we don't, that

  1487. we think are

  1488. very small.

  1489. And yet, if

  1490. it's not

  1491. acknowledged and

  1492. confessed, and

  1493. if we don't

  1494. turn back to

  1495. God and ask

  1496. His forgiveness

  1497. and ask Him to

  1498. change us, then

  1499. it just keeps

  1500. growing like a

  1501. cancer.

  1502. you know, like

  1503. an infection.

  1504. You get a

  1505. little infection,

  1506. it doesn't

  1507. seem like a

  1508. big deal, but

  1509. if you never

  1510. deal with it,

  1511. and if it just

  1512. keeps spreading,

  1513. it'll cause,

  1514. you'll have to

  1515. have surgery

  1516. someday.

  1517. So it's,

  1518. anyway, so I

  1519. think that's how

  1520. sin works.

  1521. And often,

  1522. you know, it's

  1523. true, other

  1524. kings did things

  1525. that seemed like

  1526. they were a lot

  1527. worse, and it

  1528. seemed like they

  1529. got away with it,

  1530. or at least

  1531. didn't have as

  1532. bad consequences

  1533. in this life.

  1534. And that's also

  1535. true, that we

  1536. don't, you know,

  1537. God's judgment on

  1538. sin is not fully

  1539. carried out in

  1540. our earthly lives.

  1541. And so, and

  1542. God's, and also

  1543. God's, you know,

  1544. we don't see the

  1545. full picture.

  1546. And so we can't

  1547. ever look at

  1548. somebody and say,

  1549. oh man, like,

  1550. their life is

  1551. awesome, they must

  1552. be perfect, you

  1553. know, in God's

  1554. sight.

  1555. Well, no.

  1556. And we also

  1557. can't look at

  1558. somebody and

  1559. say, oh man,

  1560. they're having

  1561. such a hard

  1562. time, they're

  1563. having all kinds

  1564. of disasters in

  1565. their life, they

  1566. must be the

  1567. worst sinner of

  1568. all.

  1569. That's not true

  1570. either.

  1571. Because in this

  1572. world, things are

  1573. mixed up.

  1574. We live in a

  1575. fallen world, and

  1576. so, you know,

  1577. sometimes, you

  1578. know, with

  1579. Saul, the, you

  1580. know, Saul was

  1581. the first, the

  1582. other thing is

  1583. Saul's the first

  1584. king.

  1585. And so, the

  1586. way God deals

  1587. with Saul is a

  1588. warning for those

  1589. in the future.

  1590. And so I think

  1591. that may be also

  1592. part of why it's

  1593. so severe in the

  1594. beginning.

  1595. Because if you

  1596. don't deal with

  1597. something seriously

  1598. from the start,

  1599. then the pattern

  1600. just easily carries

  1601. on in the future.

  1602. So, so that's a

  1603. little bit, but

  1604. that's a good

  1605. question.

  1606. All right.

  1607. One more question.

  1608. I rambled on a

  1609. little longer than

  1610. I need to.

  1611. Go ahead, Nord.

  1612. I want to ask

  1613. the opposite

  1614. question.

  1615. Yes.

  1616. Why was Saul's

  1617. question so

  1618. light?

  1619. Because the

  1620. sons of Aaron

  1621. were killed

  1622. immediately when

  1623. they offered

  1624. a strange fire

  1625. and the sons

  1626. of the world

  1627. were eaten by

  1628. the earth.

  1629. Yes.

  1630. So I thought

  1631. it was quite a

  1632. versatile happenstance

  1633. that does it

  1634. happen to Saul.

  1635. Yes.

  1636. So just to keep

  1637. you thinking.

  1638. Yes.

  1639. Yes.

  1640. Yes.

  1641. That's a great

  1642. question.

  1643. He says, you

  1644. know, what

  1645. about the

  1646. opposite question?

  1647. Why was Saul's

  1648. punishment so

  1649. light?

  1650. Some other

  1651. people were

  1652. killed right

  1653. away by God.

  1654. Right?

  1655. You know, the

  1656. Bible says the

  1657. wages of sin is

  1658. death.

  1659. I mean, think

  1660. about our own

  1661. lives and the

  1662. way that we

  1663. sometimes treat

  1664. God or each

  1665. other.

  1666. God.

  1667. And why

  1668. doesn't God

  1669. wipe us

  1670. out?

  1671. Thankfully, you

  1672. know, the

  1673. Bible says his

  1674. kindness is

  1675. meant to lead

  1676. us toward

  1677. repentance.

  1678. You know, his

  1679. kindness is

  1680. meant to lead

  1681. us to the

  1682. place where

  1683. we turn to

  1684. him and say,

  1685. forgive me.

  1686. And he's

  1687. made provision

  1688. for that

  1689. forgiveness.

  1690. That's the

  1691. best news of

  1692. all.

  1693. Is he's made

  1694. provision for

  1695. our forgiveness

  1696. from every sin

  1697. when we turn to

  1698. him.

  1699. So, thanks

  1700. Lord.

  1701. All right.

  1702. Anybody else?

  1703. I said one

  1704. more, but if

  1705. you have one,

  1706. yes, one

  1707. more.

  1708. One more.

  1709. So, this

  1710. story talks

  1711. about, I

  1712. think Saul is

  1713. very lucky to

  1714. have a prophet

  1715. like Samuel

  1716. speaking in his

  1717. life and to

  1718. give him such

  1719. a clearly

  1720. distinguishable

  1721. instance of

  1722. disobedience.

  1723. But for those

  1724. of us who

  1725. aren't as

  1726. lucky to have

  1727. prophets,

  1728. speaking into

  1729. alliance on

  1730. a regular

  1731. basis, how

  1732. do we

  1733. apply this

  1734. blessing more

  1735. directly and

  1736. in a way

  1737. that is

  1738. discernible?

  1739. Yeah.

  1740. Yes.

  1741. So, Saul had a

  1742. prophet Samuel

  1743. who was giving

  1744. him pretty

  1745. clear directions

  1746. and it was a

  1747. very specific

  1748. arrangement.

  1749. And so, Saul

  1750. had some very

  1751. direct guidance

  1752. on how to

  1753. carry out some

  1754. of his

  1755. responsibilities.

  1756. You know, what

  1757. about us?

  1758. We don't have

  1759. someone exactly

  1760. like Samuel who's,

  1761. you know, giving

  1762. us the same kind

  1763. of direct divine

  1764. guidance every

  1765. day.

  1766. So, a couple

  1767. things.

  1768. One is, what we

  1769. have that Saul

  1770. didn't have is

  1771. the Bible.

  1772. Now, Saul had

  1773. probably some

  1774. parts of the

  1775. Bible, the

  1776. law of Moses

  1777. in particular.

  1778. But that was

  1779. only the beginning

  1780. of God's

  1781. revealing himself

  1782. to his people

  1783. and to the

  1784. world.

  1785. And so, what

  1786. we have with

  1787. the whole Bible

  1788. showing the

  1789. story of not

  1790. just God's

  1791. dealings with

  1792. the people of

  1793. Israel, but

  1794. also how

  1795. that was, how

  1796. his plan for

  1797. Israel was

  1798. fulfilled in

  1799. Jesus.

  1800. So, we have

  1801. so much more

  1802. in here than

  1803. Saul had back

  1804. then.

  1805. So, one

  1806. application would

  1807. be, let's

  1808. really take

  1809. seriously and

  1810. dig into what

  1811. God has said

  1812. to us in

  1813. the Bible.

  1814. Because it's a

  1815. great blessing

  1816. that we have

  1817. it and that

  1818. it's so

  1819. available to

  1820. us.

  1821. And that

  1822. wasn't true

  1823. for Saul and

  1824. even less for

  1825. the people of

  1826. Israel.

  1827. Let's see, in

  1828. terms of more

  1829. specific guidance.

  1830. And the other

  1831. thing I would

  1832. say is that

  1833. there's a lot

  1834. of, even

  1835. with the

  1836. people who

  1837. heard, you

  1838. know, even

  1839. with Saul, or

  1840. with David, or

  1841. with Abraham, or

  1842. people who heard

  1843. the voice of

  1844. God in the

  1845. Bible, in the

  1846. Old Testament,

  1847. you know, if

  1848. you look at how

  1849. many times, even

  1850. someone like

  1851. Abraham, who

  1852. heard the voice

  1853. of God quite a

  1854. few times

  1855. directly, Abraham

  1856. maybe, there's

  1857. probably like 10

  1858. recorded instances

  1859. in the Bible

  1860. where Abraham

  1861. heard the

  1862. direct voice of

  1863. God telling him

  1864. to do something.

  1865. But Abraham

  1866. lived for 130

  1867. years.

  1868. So think about

  1869. that.

  1870. That would have

  1871. been maybe like,

  1872. the first time

  1873. was when he was

  1874. about 70,

  1875. probably.

  1876. So from 70

  1877. to 130, he

  1878. heard the voice

  1879. of God 10

  1880. times.

  1881. That's on

  1882. average once

  1883. every six

  1884. years.

  1885. So most of

  1886. his days, even

  1887. someone like

  1888. Abraham, who

  1889. heard the voice

  1890. of God, most

  1891. of his days, he

  1892. had to carry out

  1893. his life in

  1894. response to

  1895. what God

  1896. had already

  1897. said, not

  1898. with a new

  1899. special word

  1900. every day.

  1901. And so

  1902. that's, you

  1903. know, and I

  1904. think that's

  1905. true for us

  1906. often.

  1907. There's a lot

  1908. of decisions

  1909. that we face

  1910. that the Bible

  1911. doesn't tell

  1912. us, you

  1913. know, should

  1914. I marry this

  1915. person, or

  1916. should I,

  1917. you know,

  1918. choose this

  1919. career, or

  1920. should I,

  1921. you know, go

  1922. here, or do

  1923. this.

  1924. A lot of

  1925. really important

  1926. decisions that

  1927. the Bible

  1928. doesn't tell

  1929. you directly

  1930. one way or

  1931. the other, but

  1932. it gives us a

  1933. lot of wisdom

  1934. in how to

  1935. approach them.

  1936. And I think

  1937. the most

  1938. important issue

  1939. is God

  1940. wants to

  1941. shape our

  1942. hearts with

  1943. his wisdom

  1944. and his

  1945. priorities so

  1946. that we

  1947. approach our

  1948. decisions out

  1949. of a character

  1950. that loves

  1951. him above

  1952. everything else.

  1953. God

  1954. is a

  1955. God

  1956. so

  1957. anyway, that's

  1958. a lot.

  1959. And we can

  1960. talk more if you

  1961. have further

  1962. questions.

  1963. All right, let

  1964. me close us.

  1965. Yeah, look at

  1966. your bulletin if

  1967. you got one on

  1968. the way out.

  1969. There's a list of

  1970. small groups on

  1971. the back which

  1972. are Bible study

  1973. groups that meet

  1974. during the week.

  1975. I encourage you to

  1976. consider one of

  1977. those if you're

  1978. interested in that.

  1979. But let me pray

  1980. for us as we

  1981. leave.

  1982. Lord, we thank

  1983. you for your

  1984. word and thanks

  1985. for this time to

  1986. dig into it

  1987. tonight and to

  1988. discuss it a

  1989. little bit.

  1990. And we pray

  1991. that you would

  1992. help us to

  1993. keep asking

  1994. good questions

  1995. that you would

  1996. give us a hunger

  1997. to know more

  1998. about you.

  1999. And that you

  2000. would give us

  2001. a humility

  2002. to trust you

  2003. and to live

  2004. by what you

  2005. have shown to

  2006. us.

  2007. And we pray

  2008. that you would

  2009. bless us and

  2010. keep us this

  2011. night and

  2012. this week

  2013. ahead.

  2014. In Christ's

  2015. name we pray.

  2016. Amen.
