  1. That's what we're going to be looking at tonight, it's page 243.

  2. We've been going through the book of 1 Samuel in our evening services over the last few months

  3. and seen God's work through raising up the prophet Samuel first,

  4. and then we've seen sort of the rise and fall of Saul, Israel's first king,

  5. and we've seen David more recently come on the scene as God's chosen and anointed,

  6. the future king of Israel.

  7. But now, more recently, Saul has been plotting against David and opposing him.

  8. I wonder if you've ever been in a situation where it feels like the world is against you,

  9. where the people around you are out to get you.

  10. Maybe you have a fault-finding boss or professor who seems to be constantly criticizing you,

  11. constantly ignoring your request for help, trying to fire you or fail you.

  12. Maybe you've been in a situation where you don't trust the people that you're living with.

  13. You feel like you wonder if they're stealing from you.

  14. They talk behind your back.

  15. They undermine you.

  16. They accuse you.

  17. Perhaps you've been betrayed by a friend or a family member.

  18. Maybe you've been in a situation where someone literally wants to hurt you,

  19. where you've literally had to relocate for your own physical safety.

  20. Maybe you just feel alone and isolated.

  21. You know, when it feels like the world is against you,

  22. when people in authority over you can't be trusted, where do you turn?

  23. This is a situation that David was in at the beginning of this passage tonight.

  24. In the last two chapters, Saul, who is both the king of Israel, the ruler, and also David's boss,

  25. David worked in King Saul's court.

  26. Saul has tried to pin him to the wall with a spear on three separate occasions.

  27. Saul set him up by sending him out to fight against the Philistines,

  28. hoping that they would kill him, giving him no military support.

  29. Saul spoke to his son and his servants and told them to kill David.

  30. Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him all night and kill him in the morning.

  31. So David's on the run.

  32. And at the beginning of this chapter, David goes to the one person that he knows he can trust.

  33. Now surprisingly, this person is also King Saul's son, Jonathan.

  34. What we'll see in this chapter is Jonathan's loyalty to David.

  35. His steadfast, sacrificial loyalty to David.

  36. And this chapter is one of the most amazing stories of friendship, of brotherhood, of loyalty, anywhere in the Bible.

  37. So I want to walk us through the story.

  38. It's pretty long, so I'm going to read some of it and summarize other parts.

  39. And then I'm going to ask us what can we take away from this picture of loyalty and friendship.

  40. So verse 1, David fled from Naoth and Ramah and came and said before Jonathan,

  41. What have I done?

  42. What is my guilt?

  43. And what is my sin before your father that he seeks my life?

  44. In other words, is there any rhyme or reason to what Saul is doing?

  45. Is there anything that I need to understand?

  46. Is there anything I can do to avoid making him mad at me?

  47. Now at first, Jonathan's a little bit naive.

  48. Verse 2, he said to him, Far from it you shall not die.

  49. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me.

  50. And why should my father hide this from me?

  51. It is not so.

  52. But David vowed again, saying, Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes.

  53. And he thinks, Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.

  54. But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.

  55. Jonathan said to David, Whatever you say, I will do it for you.

  56. So David then proposes a plan for Jonathan to sound out Saul's motives at the king's monthly dinner party

  57. while David remains safely in hiding for a day or two.

  58. Verse 8, David says, Deal kindly with your servant.

  59. For you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you.

  60. Now flip back a page for just a second to chapter 18 and verse 3.

  61. It says, Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as his own soul.

  62. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David and his armor.

  63. And even his sword and his bow and his belt.

  64. Now that might sound a little odd.

  65. You might be wondering, What exactly is this covenant between David and Jonathan?

  66. In modern times, some people have speculated, perhaps Jonathan and David had, perhaps there was a sexual dimension to this covenant between Jonathan and David.

  67. But that's actually not what's going on at all.

  68. There's nothing sexual going on between them.

  69. What is going on is that Jonathan was the king's son.

  70. Which meant he was in line as the heir to the throne.

  71. He would receive the power and authority that belonged to his father, King Saul.

  72. But Jonathan also knew that God had said to Saul,

  73. Saul, you have disobeyed me.

  74. And so I am not going to let your kingdom continue.

  75. And God had instead chosen David to replace Saul as the future king of Israel.

  76. And Jonathan knew this because Samuel had proclaimed it as the prophet of God.

  77. And Jonathan says, You know what?

  78. I'm going to be loyal to what God says.

  79. Even when it conflicts with my own self-interest and my father's plans for my life.

  80. I'm going to be loyal to what God says, even if it means giving up everything that belongs to me.

  81. And so that's why Jonathan takes off his royal robe and gives David his armor and all the symbols of his authority.

  82. He was symbolically transferring his royal and military authority to David and saying,

  83. It belongs to you because God has chosen you.

  84. Now Jonathan and David do express deep affection for each other.

  85. It says their souls were knit together in loyalty.

  86. At the end of this chapter, chapter 20, they embrace each other and weep when they part.

  87. Their brothers, their comrades, their friends.

  88. And you know, just as a side point, deep affection is part of God's plan, not just for married couples,

  89. but also for same-sex friendships.

  90. You know, God didn't, in particular, God did not design men to be loners who never express any emotion to each other.

  91. God designed us to flourish in bonds of brotherhood, as a band of brothers.

  92. And with brotherly and sisterly love towards one another.

  93. As we're bound together by a common pursuit of God's purposes in our lives.

  94. So that's what we see with David and Jonathan, that they're bound together by a common pursuit of God's purposes in their lives,

  95. by their loyalty and their friendship.

  96. And Jonathan being willing to sacrifice his own position and his own future for the sake of what God had said.

  97. And God's plan for David.

  98. So, Jonathan's pledged allegiance to David as the future king of Israel.

  99. And Jonathan stands by his word to protect him even when David is in mortal danger.

  100. Now go back to chapter 20.

  101. Go down to verse 18.

  102. Jonathan and David work out a signal.

  103. Basically, David's going to go in, Jonathan says, verse 18,

  104. Tomorrow's the new moon, the monthly dinner party, and you will be missed because your seat will be empty.

  105. On the third day, go down quickly to the place where you hid yourself.

  106. And basically, Jonathan says, you go into a field, and here's our signal.

  107. We're going to have this signal.

  108. I'm going to shoot three arrows.

  109. And you're basically either going to know it's either going to be all clear or run for your life.

  110. And they're creating this signal so that nobody is able to see, that they're basically to protect David.

  111. So that nobody potentially even have to see them communicating.

  112. Anyway, so verse 24, David hides in the field.

  113. Jonathan goes to the dinner.

  114. That day, nothing happens.

  115. Saul doesn't say anything.

  116. Second day, Saul says, verse 27, he says,

  117. Why has not the son of Jesse come to the meal?

  118. Either yesterday or today.

  119. Now already, in the way that Saul speaks of David, there's a hint of his attitude.

  120. He calls him the son of Jesse.

  121. In other words, he doesn't even call him by his real name.

  122. That son of a farmer.

  123. Verse 28, Jonathan replies,

  124. David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem.

  125. He said, let me go.

  126. Our clan holds a sacrifice in the city.

  127. My brothers commanded me to be there.

  128. So now if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away and see my brothers.

  129. For this reason, he hasn't come to the king's table.

  130. In verse 30, everything comes to a climax.

  131. Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan.

  132. And he said to him, you son of a perverse and rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother's nakedness?

  133. For as long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established.

  134. Therefore, send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.

  135. We see here the darkness of Saul's heart.

  136. His murderous rage.

  137. Not just at David, but at Jonathan.

  138. For defending David.

  139. We see his blame shifting.

  140. His jealousy and envy.

  141. And his desperate, fearful desire to cling on to all the power that he has, even if it means killing one of his most loyal and faithful servants.

  142. But you know, even more than that, we see what's at stake for Jonathan in being loyal to David.

  143. And the answer is absolutely everything.

  144. Jonathan's future career.

  145. The approval of his parents.

  146. His inherited identity.

  147. His very own life.

  148. Everything's at stake.

  149. And yet Jonathan is unhesitating and unwavering in his loyalty to David.

  150. At the beginning of chapter 19, Saul was angry at David.

  151. Jonathan tried to step in the middle as a mediator.

  152. He sort of got Saul to calm down and got them to be happy and agree together.

  153. Saul agreed not to harm him.

  154. But you know, there wasn't any possibility for him to do that anymore.

  155. He had to choose.

  156. One side or the other.

  157. He had to choose to be loyal to Saul and kill and basically abandon David to be killed.

  158. Or to be loyal to David at the risk of his own life.

  159. And Jonathan completely identified himself with David.

  160. Jonathan said to Saul, but why should he be put to death?

  161. What has he done?

  162. Jonathan stands up for righteousness.

  163. Instead of holding on to his own self-interest.

  164. Even when everything was on the line, he didn't back down.

  165. And so Saul began to treat Jonathan the same way that he had treated David.

  166. He throws a spear at him to strike him and kill him.

  167. Just as he did to David.

  168. Basically all the anger and rage that was directed against David was now directed against Jonathan as well.

  169. And Jonathan left the king's table.

  170. He could no longer have a safe place in his own home.

  171. Now what do we take away from this story of Jonathan's sacrificial loyalty to David?

  172. First, I think Jonathan and David's relationship is a model for our human relationships.

  173. Human beings, we were meant to flourish in relationships like Jonathan and David.

  174. Relationships characterized by loyalty and steadfast love.

  175. You know, we live in a commercial world.

  176. Right?

  177. A consumer world where you pay for everything.

  178. Right?

  179. We have all these sort of short-term contractual arrangements.

  180. Where we enter into relationships with one another as long as it benefits us.

  181. Sometimes that's even how people approach friendships.

  182. Or dating relationships.

  183. I'll enter into this relationship as long as it seems to be benefiting me.

  184. And then I'll move on.

  185. When it doesn't.

  186. Now the Bible is very realistic.

  187. Proverbs 20, verse 6 says,

    Proverbs 20:6

  188. Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love,

  189. but a faithful man who can find.

  190. Let me ask you, is there someone like Jonathan in your life?

  191. Is there someone who stood by you

  192. even when everyone else has turned against you or left you alone?

  193. Maybe it's a parent.

  194. Maybe it's a spouse.

  195. Maybe it's a sibling.

  196. Maybe it's a friend.

  197. Maybe it's a brother or sister in Christ.

  198. If you have someone like that in your life,

  199. thank God.

  200. Thank God for putting that person in your life.

  201. who will stand by you

  202. and be loyal to you

  203. and take care of you

  204. even in your darkest hour.

  205. Let me also challenge us.

  206. Have you been that person to someone else

  207. when everyone else has turned against them or left them alone?

  208. Dale Ralph Davis

  209. was one of the commentators on this passage.

  210. He said something which I think is very wise

  211. and very challenging.

  212. He says,

  213. Life does not consist in achieving your goals,

  214. but in fulfilling your promises.

  215. You know,

  216. we live in a society

  217. that defines success

  218. by achieving your goals.

  219. But the Bible defines success

  220. in God's eyes as

  221. living up to your promises.

  222. So Jonathan and David's relationship

  223. is a model for human relationships.

  224. For friendships.

  225. But also,

  226. Jonathan and David's relationship

  227. is more than that.

  228. It's also a picture

  229. of our relationship with God.

  230. On the one hand,

  231. God requires

  232. our undivided devotion,

  233. our loyalty,

  234. our steadfast love.

  235. Love,

  236. what's the first and greatest commandment?

  237. Love the Lord your God

  238. with all your heart,

  239. with all your soul,

  240. with all your mind,

  241. with all your strength.

  242. Without holding anything back.

  243. Jesus Christ

  244. calls for

  245. undivided loyalty.

  246. He says,

  247. no man can serve two masters.

  248. You can't serve God

  249. and money.

  250. He says,

  251. don't be anxious about your life,

  252. about clothes,

  253. about food.

  254. The nations of the world

  255. seek after all these things,

  256. but as for you,

  257. seek first

  258. the kingdom of God

  259. and his righteousness.

  260. He also says,

  261. whoever loves father or mother

  262. more than me

  263. is not worthy of me.

  264. Whoever loves son or daughter

  265. more than me

  266. is not worthy of me.

  267. And whoever does not take his cross

  268. and follow me

  269. is not worthy of me.

  270. Strong words.

  271. Just like Jonathan's sacrifice

  272. in order to be loyal to David,

  273. God's anointed king,

  274. we're called to sacrifice

  275. in order to be loyal to Jesus.

  276. You know,

  277. sometimes following Jesus

  278. will be unpopular.

  279. You might lose the approval

  280. of some of your peers

  281. or even your parents

  282. or extended family.

  283. There's a guy

  284. who went to college with me.

  285. He

  286. became a Christian

  287. his freshman year.

  288. He was from another country,

  289. from another religious background.

  290. And when he became a Christian

  291. and told his mother,

  292. his mother threatened

  293. to commit suicide.

  294. You're dishonoring the family.

  295. You're abandoning

  296. the religion of our ancestors.

  297. You're rejecting

  298. the way we brought you up.

  299. She prohibited him

  300. from going to church

  301. or Christian meetings.

  302. He was patient

  303. and for a while

  304. he honored her request.

  305. In the meantime,

  306. the Christians he knew

  307. would come to his dorm room

  308. and pray with him.

  309. He wasn't going

  310. to any Christian meetings,

  311. but the Christians

  312. came to him.

  313. It's a good thing to do.

  314. But eventually he decided

  315. that since he believed,

  316. since he had trusted

  317. in Jesus Christ,

  318. that he couldn't stay,

  319. he needed to meet together

  320. with other Christian believers.

  321. And so he went back to church.

  322. And he,

  323. it took a long time

  324. and he always did

  325. what he could

  326. to honor his parents.

  327. He was an excellent student.

  328. He was really a genius,

  329. more than almost anyone else

  330. I've known.

  331. He was patient

  332. and honoring

  333. toward his parents,

  334. but his loyalties

  335. were first and foremost

  336. to Jesus Christ.

  337. Gradually his parents

  338. became more open

  339. to learning.

  340. What was this thing

  341. that had made

  342. such an effect

  343. on his life?

  344. In our story tonight,

  345. Jonathan,

  346. he was on track

  347. for a high-level

  348. leadership position,

  349. the highest of all,

  350. to be the king of Israel.

  351. And the rug was pulled out

  352. from under him

  353. for no fault of his own.

  354. It was his father, Saul,

  355. who disobeyed

  356. and messed everything up.

  357. And yet he wasn't envious.

  358. When God chose David,

  359. he gladly gave

  360. his full loyalty

  361. to the person

  362. that God had appointed

  363. to take his place.

  364. It's pretty amazing.

  365. It's not what people

  366. normally do.

  367. In the New Testament,

  368. this is exactly

  369. what happened

  370. to John the Baptist.

  371. Right?

  372. He was called by God

  373. to be a prophet.

  374. He gathered

  375. a group of followers.

  376. He was the leader

  377. of a movement.

  378. movement.

  379. But when he saw Jesus,

  380. he said,

  381. look,

  382. the Lamb of God

  383. who takes away

  384. the sin of the world.

  385. He says,

  386. I'm the voice of one

  387. calling in the desert.

  388. Prepare the way

  389. for the Lord,

  390. but he's the Lord.

  391. And so he said,

  392. he must become greater

  393. and I must become less.

  394. John the Baptist said,

  395. don't follow me anymore.

  396. Follow him.

  397. There's a cost

  398. of following Jesus.

  399. But you know,

  400. there's also

  401. an even greater reward.

  402. Because this passage

  403. isn't just about

  404. the cost

  405. of being loyal

  406. to Jesus.

  407. It also is about

  408. the cost that Jesus

  409. paid to be loyal

  410. to us.

  411. You know,

  412. most of this chapter

  413. is about

  414. Jonathan's steadfast

  415. love for David.

  416. When David was in trouble,

  417. but actually later on,

  418. the roles would be reversed.

  419. Because David

  420. would rise to power

  421. and Jonathan

  422. and his descendants

  423. would be completely vulnerable

  424. and powerless.

  425. Go to verse 14.

  426. There's this speech

  427. that Jonathan makes

  428. from verse 12 to 17

  429. that sort of

  430. sticks out

  431. in the middle

  432. of the story.

  433. And I didn't read it

  434. as we were reading

  435. the story.

  436. I skipped over it.

  437. But if you read

  438. the story,

  439. these verses stand out.

  440. And so it's what

  441. I want to end with.

  442. Particularly,

  443. go to the end

  444. of verse 13.

  445. Well,

  446. I'll read the whole thing.

  447. Verse 12.

  448. Jonathan said to David,

  449. the Lord,

  450. the Lord,

  451. the God of Israel,

  452. be witness.

  453. When I have sounded out

  454. my father about this time

  455. tomorrow or the third day,

  456. behold,

  457. if he is well disposed

  458. toward David,

  459. shall I not then send

  460. and disclose it to you?

  461. But should it please

  462. my father to do you harm,

  463. the Lord do so

  464. to Jonathan and more

  465. also if I do not

  466. disclose it to you

  467. and send you away

  468. that you may go in safety.

  469. So basically,

  470. he promises his loyalty

  471. to David.

  472. May the Lord be with you

  473. as he has been

  474. with my father.

  475. Then verse 14.

  476. He says,

  477. If I am still alive,

  478. show me the steadfast

  479. love of the Lord

  480. that I may not die.

  481. And do not cut off

  482. your steadfast love

  483. from my house forever

  484. when the Lord cuts off

  485. every one of the enemies

  486. of David

  487. from the face of the earth.

  488. And Jonathan made a covenant

  489. with the house of David

  490. saying,

  491. May the Lord take vengeance

  492. on David's enemies.

  493. And Jonathan made David

  494. swear again.

  495. By his love for him.

  496. You see,

  497. when David

  498. would one day

  499. ascend to the throne,

  500. everyone who was

  501. a potential rival

  502. was liable to be eliminated.

  503. In the ancient world,

  504. that's the way

  505. it normally went.

  506. There's even

  507. examples of this

  508. that happened

  509. in other places

  510. in the Old Testament.

  511. Some king comes to power,

  512. a new dynasty.

  513. What does he do?

  514. He kills off

  515. every male associated

  516. with the old dynasty.

  517. He cleans

  518. house.

  519. Fires everyone.

  520. Kills them.

  521. That's what they did

  522. back then.

  523. The Bible talks about

  524. a lot of things

  525. not approving them.

  526. It just,

  527. that's how it happened.

  528. But it was different

  529. between David

  530. and Jonathan's household.

  531. David says,

  532. As you have been loyal to me,

  533. I will be loyal to you.

  534. And you will have a place

  535. in my house forever.

  536. And in 2 Samuel chapter 9,

    2 Samuel 9 chapter mention

  537. David keeps his promise.

  538. By then,

  539. Jonathan has died,

  540. but David takes care

  541. of Jonathan's descendants,

  542. of his family.

  543. He doesn't wipe them out,

  544. even though they were

  545. part of Saul's family.

  546. Potential rivals.

  547. He takes care of them

  548. and gives them

  549. an honored seat

  550. in his kingdom.

  551. And,

  552. just like David,

  553. Jesus Christ

  554. extends to us

  555. his

  556. steadfast

  557. love,

  558. his

  559. loyalty,

  560. by including us

  561. in his kingdom.

  562. You know,

  563. this is how God

  564. is described

  565. in the Old Testament.

  566. Abounding

  567. in steadfast

  568. love

  569. and faithfulness,

  570. same words

  571. that are used

  572. in verse 14

  573. and 15.

  574. And this is how

  575. Jesus Christ

  576. is described

  577. in the New Testament,

  578. full of grace

  579. and truth.

  580. Now,

  581. sometimes when we hear

  582. that,

  583. we think,

  584. we think of truth

  585. as sort of an abstract

  586. thing.

  587. But it's the same

  588. idea,

  589. full of mercy,

  590. of grace,

  591. and full of truth

  592. and faithfulness

  593. because he keeps

  594. his word.

  595. He holds

  596. to his word.

  597. And Jesus

  598. keeps his word

  599. to us.

  600. Now,

  601. earlier I quoted

  602. two verses

  603. from Jesus

  604. where Jesus

  605. talks about

  606. the cost

  607. of following

  608. him,

  609. but I actually

  610. only quoted

  611. half the verses

  612. because at the

  613. end of the

  614. verse,

  615. there's a promise.

  616. So when Jesus

  617. says,

  618. seek first

  619. the kingdom

  620. of God

  621. and his

  622. righteousness,

  623. he also

  624. says,

  625. and all

  626. these things

  627. will be added

  628. to you as

  629. well.

  630. And when

  631. he says,

  632. whoever doesn't

  633. take up his

  634. cross and

  635. follow me

  636. isn't worthy

  637. of me,

  638. he also

  639. says,

  640. whoever finds

  641. his life

  642. will lose

  643. it,

  644. but whoever

  645. loses his

  646. life for my

  647. sake will

  648. find it.

  649. Jesus is

  650. saying,

  651. whatever you

  652. have to give

  653. up to follow

  654. me,

  655. I'm going

  656. to give you

  657. something far

  658. better and

  659. far more

  660. enduring.

  661. Jesus said

  662. to his

  663. disciples,

  664. truly I

  665. say to

  666. you in

  667. the new

  668. world,

  669. when the

  670. son of

  671. man will

  672. sit on

  673. his

  674. glorious

  675. throne,

  676. you who

  677. have

  678. followed

  679. me will

  680. also sit

  681. on twelve

  682. thrones

  683. judging the

  684. twelve tribes

  685. of Israel.

  686. That's a

  687. promise to

  688. the twelve

  689. disciples.

  690. And then he

  691. gives a

  692. promise to

  693. every one of

  694. his followers

  695. who has

  696. had to leave

  697. something in

  698. order to

  699. follow him.

  700. He says,

  701. everyone who

  702. has left

  703. houses or

  704. brothers or

  705. sisters or

  706. father or

  707. mother or

  708. children or

  709. lands for

  710. my name's

  711. sake will

  712. receive a

  713. hundredfold and

  714. will inherit

  715. eternal life.

  716. You may need

  717. to give up,

  718. maybe a lot,

  719. to follow

  720. Jesus.

  721. I don't know

  722. what that's

  723. going to look

  724. like for

  725. each of you.

  726. But if you

  727. join yourself

  728. to Jesus,

  729. there's one

  730. thing that you

  731. will never

  732. lose.

  733. You'll never

  734. lose a place

  735. in his kingdom,

  736. a place at

  737. his table,

  738. a place in

  739. his house,

  740. a place where

  741. you belong as

  742. part of his

  743. family forever.

  744. And there's a

  745. peace in

  746. knowing that

  747. you belong to

  748. him.

  749. Go to the

  750. conclusion of

  751. chapter 20,

  752. verse 41 and

  753. 42.

  754. basically Jonathan

  755. goes out to

  756. the field,

  757. shoots the

  758. arrows,

  759. gives a

  760. signal to

  761. David that

  762. all is not

  763. well with

  764. Saul and

  765. that he

  766. needs to

  767. flee.

  768. As soon as

  769. the boy who

  770. had gone to

  771. fetch the

  772. arrows had

  773. gone,

  774. David rose

  775. from beside

  776. the stone

  777. heap and

  778. fell on his

  779. face to the

  780. ground and

  781. bowed three

  782. times.

  783. And they

  784. kissed one

  785. another and

  786. wept with

  787. one another,

  788. David weeping

  789. the most.

  790. Then Jonathan

  791. said to

  792. David,

  793. go in

  794. peace,

  795. because we

  796. have sworn

  797. both of us

  798. in the name

  799. of the Lord

  800. saying,

  801. the Lord

  802. shall be

  803. between me

  804. and you

  805. and between

  806. my offspring

  807. and your

  808. offspring forever.

  809. And he

  810. rose and

  811. departed and

  812. Jonathan went

  813. into the

  814. city.

  815. We see a

  816. tearful parting

  817. of two close

  818. friends.

  819. David still

  820. running for

  821. his life,

  822. Saul still

  823. out to get

  824. him,

  825. he's still

  826. facing great

  827. trials and

  828. tribulations,

  829. his future

  830. is still

  831. completely

  832. uncertain,

  833. at least

  834. from his

  835. own

  836. experience.

  837. experience.

  838. But Jonathan

  839. says,

  840. go in

  841. peace,

  842. because the

  843. Lord is

  844. between us

  845. forever.

  846. Have you

  847. ever felt

  848. like the

  849. world is

  850. against you,

  851. you don't

  852. know who

  853. you can

  854. trust,

  855. but there's

  856. at least

  857. one person

  858. in the

  859. world that

  860. you know

  861. you can

  862. trust,

  863. and because

  864. of that

  865. person being

  866. there,

  867. you have

  868. peace.

  869. in the

  870. midst,

  871. in the

  872. midst of all

  873. the turmoil,

  874. in the

  875. midst of all

  876. the uncertainty,

  877. there's a

  878. peace in

  879. knowing that

  880. someone is

  881. there for you,

  882. and isn't

  883. going to leave

  884. you.

  885. And Jesus

  886. says,

  887. I am that

  888. person

  889. who will

  890. never leave

  891. you,

  892. who will

  893. never die,

  894. who will

  895. never betray

  896. you,

  897. more than

  898. anyone else in

  899. the world,

  900. because everyone

  901. else,

  902. at the

  903. very least,

  904. they'll one

  905. day die,

  906. and they

  907. won't be

  908. able to

  909. help you

  910. anymore,

  911. or they

  912. might move

  913. away,

  914. and circumstances

  915. might change,

  916. and sometimes

  917. people disappoint

  918. you,

  919. even closest

  920. friends.

  921. But Jesus

  922. said to his

  923. disciples,

  924. I've told you

  925. these things so

  926. that in me,

  927. you might have

  928. peace.

  929. In the world,

  930. you'll have

  931. tribulation,

  932. but take heart,

  933. I've overcome

  934. the world.

  935. So whatever

  936. trouble,

  937. you may be

  938. facing,

  939. whoever else

  940. may be

  941. against you,

  942. or seeking

  943. to undermine

  944. you,

  945. Jesus is

  946. offering you

  947. his friendship,

  948. his peace,

  949. his steadfast

  950. love.

  951. And if you

  952. receive him,

  953. and if you

  954. trust him,

  955. he will never

  956. leave you,

  957. nor forsake

  958. you.

  959. Tonight,

  960. we're going to

  961. celebrate communion,

  962. where we see

  963. what Jesus

  964. sacrificed to

  965. bring us into

  966. his kingdom

  967. forever.

  968. we're going

  969. to take the

  970. bread and

  971. the cup

  972. that remind

  973. us of

  974. Jesus'

  975. death

  976. on the

  977. cross,

  978. his body

  979. that was

  980. broken,

  981. his blood

  982. that was

  983. shed for

  984. us.

  985. It's a

  986. reminder of

  987. Jesus'

  988. steadfast love

  989. for us,

  990. the price

  991. that he

  992. paid,

  993. the sacrifice

  994. that he

  995. made,

  996. so that

  997. we could

  998. be included

  999. in his

  1000. family,

  1001. so that

  1002. we could

  1003. know his

  1004. love,

  1005. so that

  1006. we could

  1007. be forgiven.

  1008. It also

  1009. calls us

  1010. every time

  1011. we take

  1012. the bread

  1013. and the

  1014. cup,

  1015. it calls

  1016. us to

  1017. reaffirm

  1018. our loyalty

  1019. to him

  1020. as well.

  1021. You know,

  1022. the apostle

  1023. Paul says,

  1024. he says,

  1025. before you

  1026. take the

  1027. bread and

  1028. the cup,

  1029. examine

  1030. yourself.

  1031. And it's

  1032. good to do

  1033. that,

  1034. periodically.

  1035. The Bible

  1036. says if

  1037. you're living

  1038. in what

  1039. the Bible

  1040. calls unrepentant

  1041. sin,

  1042. that means

  1043. if there's

  1044. some era

  1045. of your

  1046. life where

  1047. you're

  1048. shutting

  1049. God out,

  1050. and you're

  1051. saying,

  1052. I don't

  1053. want you,

  1054. I'm not

  1055. going to

  1056. listen to

  1057. you.

  1058. Don't

  1059. come in.

  1060. Paul warns

  1061. us,

  1062. don't take

  1063. the bread

  1064. and the

  1065. cup with

  1066. that kind

  1067. of attitude.

  1068. But if

  1069. that's what

  1070. God is

  1071. showing you,

  1072. if God

  1073. is showing

  1074. you some

  1075. part of

  1076. your life

  1077. where you've

  1078. been disloyal

  1079. to him,

  1080. where you've

  1081. fallen short

  1082. or failed,

  1083. this is an

  1084. opportunity to

  1085. not just

  1086. stay in a

  1087. place of

  1088. guilt and

  1089. shame.

  1090. Don't

  1091. just stay

  1092. isolated and

  1093. feeling far

  1094. away from

  1095. God,

  1096. draw near to

  1097. him.

  1098. Because Jesus

  1099. has drawn

  1100. near to you

  1101. and he is

  1102. drawing near

  1103. to you

  1104. tonight.

  1105. So Jesus

  1106. is inviting

  1107. you to

  1108. admit your

  1109. sin,

  1110. admit where

  1111. you've

  1112. fallen short,

  1113. ask his

  1114. forgiveness,

  1115. receive that

  1116. promise of

  1117. forgiveness,

  1118. and receive

  1119. his renewing

  1120. power through

  1121. the Holy

  1122. Spirit.

  1123. And when

  1124. you take

  1125. the bread,

  1126. remember

  1127. just as

  1128. surely as

  1129. you hold

  1130. that piece

  1131. of bread in

  1132. your hand

  1133. and put it

  1134. in your

  1135. mouth,

  1136. you can

  1137. know that

  1138. surely,

  1139. that Jesus

  1140. Christ has

  1141. forgiven your

  1142. sins if you

  1143. turn and

  1144. trust in

  1145. him.

  1146. So if you're

  1147. trusting Jesus,

  1148. come and be

  1149. renewed.

  1150. If you've

  1151. fallen short,

  1152. we're just

  1153. going to take a

  1154. moment of

  1155. silence.

  1156. If you need to

  1157. confess the sin

  1158. to the Lord,

  1159. if there's

  1160. something God's

  1161. brought to

  1162. mind,

  1163. if you need

  1164. to renew

  1165. your commitment

  1166. to Christ,

  1167. let's just

  1168. take a moment

  1169. of silence

  1170. to do that.
