  1. Let's read together.

  2. After this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.

  3. And he revealed himself in this way.

  4. Simon Peter, Thomas called the twin, Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.

  5. Simon Peter said to them, I'm going fishing.

  6. They said to him, we'll go with you.

  7. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

  8. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore, yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

  9. Jesus said to them, children, do you have any fish?

  10. They answered him, no.

  11. He said to them, cast the net on the right side of the boat and you'll find some.

  12. So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because of the quantity of fish.

  13. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, it is the Lord.

  14. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.

  15. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

  16. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place with fish laid out on it and bread.

  17. Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish that you have just caught.

  18. So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them.

  19. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.

  20. And Jesus said to them, come and have breakfast.

  21. Now none of the disciples dared ask him, who are you?

  22. They knew it was the Lord.

  23. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so would the fish.

  24. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

  25. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  26. Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?

  27. He said to them, he said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  28. He said to him, feed my lambs.

  29. He said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  30. He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  31. He said to him, tend my sheep.

  32. He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  33. Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, do you love me?

  34. And he said to him, Lord, you know everything.

  35. You know that I love you.

  36. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.

  37. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted.

  38. But when you were old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.

  39. This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.

  40. And after saying this, he said to him, follow me.

  41. Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them,

  42. the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper,

  43. and had said, Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?

  44. When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, Lord, what about this man?

  45. Jesus said to him, if it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?

  46. You follow me.

  47. Well, this morning, for our send-off Sunday, we're looking at the final chapter of John's gospel.

  48. Some of Jesus' last words to his disciples before he would leave them on earth and return to the Father.

  49. This season of the year is a time of looking back to the past and looking forward to the future.

  50. And whether you're graduating or moving on or whether nothing in your life is changing

  51. and everything is simply just the same as it was,

  52. it's a good opportunity periodically to look back and to look forward.

  53. So we're going to look into this passage this morning.

  54. As Jesus, what we'll see is that as Jesus equips his disciples for the future,

  55. he does it by reminding them of the past

  56. in three particular ways.

  57. This closing chapter of John is fascinating in that

  58. what Jesus says and does points back to at least three prior incidents

  59. in the course recorded in the New Testament gospels

  60. that Jesus and his disciples have already been through.

  61. One at the beginning of Jesus' ministry,

  62. one at the middle,

  63. and one toward the end.

  64. And I think Jesus deliberately orchestrates the way this scene unfolds

  65. in order to sort of replay these prior events in his disciples' minds.

  66. It's as if he was, you know, if you're graduating,

  67. perhaps you may walk around the campus this weekend

  68. and remember the first day that you arrived

  69. and a conversation that you had during sophomore year with a friend

  70. or perhaps something that happened just last week.

  71. And you'll have these memories that are triggered in your mind

  72. as you look at the places where you've been

  73. and the people you've been with.

  74. Or it's sort of like,

  75. so this last chapter is a bit like that

  76. or it's a bit like watching the highlights on SportsCenter

  77. after a baseball game.

  78. And they point out the defining moments of a game

  79. or the end of a symphony where the theme and the variations

  80. are woven together in a grand climax

  81. or a surprising conclusion of a movie

  82. that puts a new twist on various strands of the plot.

  83. So what we want to, the main point here

  84. is that Jesus equips us for our future

  85. by reminding us of our past.

  86. So I want to look at three lessons that he teaches us

  87. looking back and looking forward.

  88. So first, Jesus teaches us to abide in him.

  89. The story begins with Simon Peter and six disciples

  90. going fishing in the Sea of Galilee,

  91. or here it's called the Sea of Tiberias.

  92. Now it's a bit of an ambivalent beginning.

  93. You know, if you've read the Gospel of John,

  94. the last couple of chapters,

  95. Jesus has been crucified.

  96. He's now risen from the dead.

  97. He's revealed himself to his disciples.

  98. And now we see the disciples are sort of hanging out.

  99. Peter's like, let's go fishing.

  100. And they're like, sure, we'll go with you.

  101. Now on the one hand,

  102. fishing is a perfectly legitimate activity

  103. for Jesus' disciples.

  104. One person said even though Jesus was crucified

  105. and now is risen,

  106. his disciples still have to eat.

  107. And that's very reasonable.

  108. And according to Matthew and Mark,

  109. Jesus had actually told them to go to Galilee

  110. where he would see them.

  111. On the other hand,

  112. I think in these first few verses,

  113. the disciples seem rather aimless,

  114. even a little bored,

  115. and powerless.

  116. They fish all night.

  117. Experienced fishermen,

  118. then they catch nothing.

  119. Now, of course,

  120. this wasn't the first time

  121. that they had found themselves

  122. in such a situation.

  123. The whole situation would have reminded them

  124. of what we read earlier

  125. in the service from Luke 5.

  126. This is the first flashback from the past.

  127. At the beginning of Jesus' ministry,

  128. when he first called these men

  129. to follow him,

  130. if you want to turn back there,

  131. the same guys,

  132. at least Simon Peter

  133. and the sons of Zebedee,

  134. were fishing in the same lake.

  135. Luke calls it the Lake of Gennesaret.

  136. John calls it the Sea of Tiberias.

  137. It's the same thing.

  138. It had multiple names.

  139. And they fished all night

  140. and they had caught nothing.

  141. And then Jesus had come along

  142. and he had the nerve

  143. to give these experienced fishermen

  144. advice on how to catch some fish.

  145. He had said,

  146. go out into deep water,

  147. let down your nets for the catch.

  148. At first, Peter was protesting,

  149. but we've worked all night.

  150. We've caught nothing.

  151. He says, okay, fine, I'll do it.

  152. Does it?

  153. Lo and behold,

  154. the nets are full.

  155. And so when the same kind of thing

  156. happened again,

  157. the disciples immediately recognized

  158. who it was standing on the shore

  159. in the early morning light.

  160. It's the Lord.

  161. Both times,

  162. the disciples had been working hard

  163. apart from Jesus

  164. and their work had resulted in nothing.

  165. And when they heard

  166. and obeyed Jesus' voice,

  167. their nets were filled to overflowing.

  168. What's Jesus trying to remind them of?

  169. He's trying to remind us

  170. of our dependence.

  171. Now, of course,

  172. in a general sense,

  173. all of us are dependent on God

  174. as his creatures.

  175. The scientist Stephen Jay Gould

  176. wrote,

  177. the laws of science

  178. contain many fundamental numbers

  179. like the size of the electric charge

  180. of the electron

  181. and the ratio of the masses

  182. of the proton and the electron.

  183. Maybe you understand those things,

  184. maybe you don't.

  185. But he says,

  186. the remarkable fact

  187. is that the values of these numbers

  188. seem to have been

  189. very finely adjusted

  190. to make possible

  191. the development of life.

  192. Now,

  193. Stephen Jay Gould

  194. is an agnostic

  195. or was an agnostic,

  196. but he and many other scientists

  197. recognize that we live

  198. in a universe

  199. that seems amazingly fine-tuned

  200. to sustain physical life.

  201. And we've discovered

  202. the laws of gravity,

  203. we peer into the mysteries

  204. of quantum mechanics,

  205. we marvel at the capacities

  206. of human brain,

  207. but we did not create

  208. and we do not sustain

  209. any of these things,

  210. even though

  211. that is what sustains

  212. our physical life every day.

  213. These things that we

  214. don't even think about.

  215. The laws of the universe

  216. that remain constant

  217. and the way that God

  218. upholds our lives,

  219. even if we don't recognize him.

  220. We're fundamentally dependent

  221. on God as his creatures

  222. in a very basic way.

  223. You know,

  224. in a more particular way,

  225. Jesus is reminding us,

  226. those of us who believe in him,

  227. that we're absolutely dependent

  228. on him as his disciples.

  229. Jesus said in John 15,

  230. I am the vine,

  231. you are the branches.

  232. If you abide in me,

  233. you will bear much fruit,

  234. and apart from me,

  235. you can do nothing.

  236. Now what does it look like

  237. to abide in Jesus,

  238. to live in dependence upon Jesus?

  239. Well, Jesus talks about

  240. abiding in his word,

  241. letting his word constantly

  242. be sinking into our hearts

  243. and shaping our lives.

  244. He talks about abiding in his love,

  245. resting in the assurance

  246. that we belong to him,

  247. and nothing can snatch us

  248. away from his hand.

  249. And that if he was willing

  250. to lay down his life

  251. for us on the cross,

  252. how much more

  253. will he give us

  254. all things that we need?

  255. Jesus also speaks

  256. about abiding in prayer,

  257. coming before God every day

  258. to ask for what we need,

  259. abiding in communion

  260. with God,

  261. the Father,

  262. Son,

  263. and Holy Spirit.

  264. And I think one of the

  265. key indicators

  266. of whether we're living

  267. in dependence upon God,

  268. whether we're abiding in Christ,

  269. is our practice

  270. of prayer.

  271. Do we feel our need to pray

  272. as much as you feel

  273. the need to eat

  274. in order to satisfy

  275. your hunger every day?

  276. In the Lord's Prayer,

  277. Jesus taught us to pray

  278. for our daily provision.

  279. Give us this day

  280. our daily bread,

  281. for our daily pardon.

  282. Forgive us our trespasses

  283. as we forgive those

  284. who trespass against us

  285. for our daily protection.

  286. Lead us not into temptation,

  287. but deliver us from evil.

  288. Do we feel that need

  289. to pray every day

  290. for our provision,

  291. our pardon,

  292. and our protection?

  293. You know,

  294. even if we don't feel

  295. our need for prayer,

  296. are we so convinced

  297. of its importance

  298. for our spiritual well-being

  299. that we discipline ourselves

  300. to do it?

  301. You know,

  302. if you're sick,

  303. or if you're depressed,

  304. or if you're taking

  305. certain medications,

  306. you might not actually

  307. feel hungry.

  308. You might not actually

  309. feel like eating at all.

  310. But if you want to,

  311. if you want to care

  312. for your body,

  313. and if you want to promote

  314. your own physical health,

  315. you'll discipline yourself

  316. to eat,

  317. even if you don't feel

  318. the need for it,

  319. because you realize,

  320. my body isn't functioning

  321. the way it should.

  322. And in order for me

  323. to get better,

  324. I will have to eat

  325. healthy foods.

  326. And in the same way,

  327. there can be that discipline

  328. of praying,

  329. even when we don't feel like it,

  330. even when our spiritual senses

  331. are a little bit dull,

  332. and we have to discipline ourselves

  333. and say,

  334. I need to pray.

  335. Even though I feel

  336. self-sufficient,

  337. even though I feel like

  338. I'm not in

  339. a desperate situation,

  340. I need,

  341. I'm absolutely dependent

  342. on God,

  343. and I need to be

  344. in prayer.

  345. So God reminds us

  346. of our dependence.

  347. You know,

  348. sometimes God reminds us

  349. of our dependence

  350. in a situation like

  351. the disciples found themselves in.

  352. They fished all night

  353. and caught nothing.

  354. Maybe you've been searching

  355. for a job all year,

  356. and you still haven't found one.

  357. Sometimes God reminds us

  358. of our dependence

  359. through hard situations,

  360. sickness or job loss,

  361. loneliness.

  362. But you know,

  363. it's also a blessing

  364. when God sustains us

  365. in our dependence on Him

  366. through a time of prosperity,

  367. when everything's going well,

  368. and when you have the job

  369. you always wanted,

  370. and when you have

  371. great friends,

  372. and you might otherwise

  373. be tempted to embrace

  374. the illusion that

  375. we are self-sufficient

  376. and self-made.

  377. It's a blessing

  378. when God sustains us

  379. in dependence on Him.

  380. Whether it's in a time

  381. of adversity

  382. or a time of prosperity,

  383. it's true nonetheless.

  384. And so Jesus reminds us

  385. of that.

  386. Now Jesus reminds them

  387. of their dependence

  388. by pointing back

  389. to this first episode,

  390. but He also provides for them

  391. in great abundance.

  392. What happens

  393. in Luke chapter 5

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  394. and in John chapter 21?

    John 21 chapter mention

  395. Well, they throw out the nets,

  396. and then they get this

  397. amazingly large catch of fish.

  398. Now there's this interesting

  399. difference between the two stories.

  400. In Luke,

  401. everything starts to fall apart.

  402. The nets start breaking.

  403. The boats start sinking.

  404. Peter says,

  405. Go away from me, Lord.

  406. I'm a sinful man.

  407. They can't handle

  408. the abundance

  409. that Jesus provides.

  410. But in John,

  411. verse 11 points out,

  412. although there were so many fish,

  413. the net was not torn.

  414. And when Peter sees Jesus,

  415. he runs to Jesus

  416. because he knows

  417. He's the Lord.

  418. Now,

  419. what's the significance

  420. of this detail?

  421. Well,

  422. the nets full of fish

  423. are a symbol

  424. of the disciples' calling.

  425. Right?

  426. Jesus had said,

  427. Don't be afraid.

  428. From now on,

  429. you will be fishers

  430. of man.

  431. Right?

  432. This is a,

  433. I will send you out

  434. into all the world

  435. with the good news

  436. of Jesus Christ

  437. to welcome people

  438. and to gather people

  439. into my kingdom.

  440. And you know,

  441. that calling

  442. that Jesus gives us

  443. to proclaim

  444. the gospel

  445. of Jesus Christ

  446. and to bring

  447. all kinds of people

  448. from all over the world

  449. into his kingdom

  450. can feel overwhelming

  451. and intimidating.

  452. We might feel like

  453. Peter and the other disciples

  454. did in Luke.

  455. The nets are breaking.

  456. You might think,

  457. you know,

  458. what if God brings

  459. a whole bunch of people

  460. who are totally different

  461. than me

  462. into our church?

  463. Or what if God brings

  464. people into my life

  465. who have overwhelming

  466. physical needs?

  467. Or what if I'm asked

  468. to take on

  469. a position of leadership

  470. and responsibility

  471. that I feel like

  472. is over my head?

  473. Now it's true,

  474. following Jesus

  475. can feel overwhelming

  476. at times.

  477. But what Jesus wants

  478. to reassure

  479. his disciples here

  480. is that he's promised

  481. to be with us

  482. and to equip us.

  483. And that we can

  484. depend on him,

  485. we can abide in him,

  486. and he'll equip us

  487. for whatever task

  488. he calls us to.

  489. Although there were

  490. so many fish,

  491. the net was not torn.

  492. That we,

  493. and the net

  494. in one sense

  495. can represent

  496. the promises

  497. of the gospel of Jesus.

  498. Jesus says,

  499. anyone everywhere

  500. who believes in him

  501. will have eternal life.

  502. He's a merciful Savior,

  503. and anyone who comes to him

  504. will not be driven away.

  505. The promises are true,

  506. and they will hold,

  507. and they will not break.

  508. And that's what

  509. Christ has given us.

  510. So that's the first thing.

  511. Jesus calls us

  512. to abide in him

  513. by reminding us

  514. of our dependence.

  515. Second, he calls us

  516. to invest for him.

  517. Now this is verse 9

  518. through 14.

  519. When they got on land,

  520. they saw fish and bread

  521. prepared by Jesus.

  522. Jesus was acting

  523. as a host.

  524. He had cooked breakfast

  525. for them,

  526. inviting his disciples

  527. to share a meal.

  528. And verse 13 says

  529. he took the bread

  530. and gave it to them.

  531. Now, once again,

  532. Jesus was deliberately

  533. reminding them

  534. of an episode

  535. from the middle

  536. of his earthly ministry

  537. when he had fed

  538. a whole crowd of people,

  539. 5,000 men plus women

  540. and children,

  541. with bread and fish.

  542. And when he took it

  543. and gave it to the people.

  544. In the Gospel of John,

  545. it appears in chapter 6.

  546. It's the only one

  547. of Jesus' miracles

  548. recorded in all four

  549. of the Gospels.

  550. So if you want,

  551. you can flip back

  552. to John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  553. this event that Jesus

  554. was reminding

  555. his disciples of.

  556. Now, what was the point?

  557. Why did Jesus want

  558. to remind his disciples

  559. of this particular event?

  560. On the one hand,

  561. it was a symbol

  562. of his abundant provision.

  563. Going along

  564. with the first point,

  565. with only five small loaves

  566. of bread and two small fish,

  567. Jesus fed a large crowd

  568. and there were 12 baskets

  569. full of leftovers

  570. at the end,

  571. one for each of the disciples.

  572. But you know,

  573. the story isn't just about

  574. Jesus' amazing provision,

  575. amazing though it was,

  576. but also Jesus'

  577. insistence that his disciples

  578. be involved in the process.

  579. If you go back

  580. to John chapter 6,

    John 6:5

  581. verse 5,

  582. it says,

  583. Jesus saw that a large crowd

  584. was coming toward him

  585. and he said to Philip,

  586. where are we to buy bread

  587. so that these people may eat?

  588. Verse 6 said,

  589. he said this to test him

  590. for he himself knew

  591. what he would do.

  592. Jesus intentionally involved

  593. his disciples

  594. in his ministry.

  595. Now, Jesus was

  596. the Lord of all creation.

  597. All things had been

  598. made through him.

  599. If he, I mean,

  600. if he could really do

  601. this miracle

  602. and multiply five loaves

  603. of bread and two small fish

  604. to feed 5,000 people,

  605. he didn't really need

  606. the five loaves of bread

  607. and two small fish.

  608. He could have

  609. made it out of thin air.

  610. But no, he says,

  611. I want you

  612. to be invested

  613. in this with me.

  614. He received

  615. a small boy's lunch,

  616. willingly offered.

  617. He involved

  618. the disciples

  619. in organizing

  620. the people

  621. and distributing

  622. the food

  623. and cleaning up afterwards

  624. and in John 21,

  625. Jesus followed

  626. the same pattern.

  627. He says,

  628. he was already

  629. cooking the fish

  630. and bread

  631. on the fire

  632. and Jesus says,

  633. bring some of the fish

  634. that you have caught.

  635. You see,

  636. Jesus is sufficient.

  637. Jesus can accomplish

  638. his work on his own

  639. but he calls us

  640. to be invested

  641. alongside him.

  642. And even though

  643. our resources

  644. may seem insignificant

  645. and insufficient

  646. compared to his,

  647. he multiplies them

  648. for the good

  649. of his people

  650. and the glory

  651. of his name.

  652. So let me ask us,

  653. brothers and sisters,

  654. can you remember

  655. a time

  656. when Jesus called you

  657. to invest sacrificially

  658. from your own

  659. limited resources

  660. and then he multiplied

  661. what you offered him?

  662. Offered to others

  663. in his name.

  664. Maybe you heard

  665. that someone

  666. in the church

  667. was sick

  668. and you took

  669. the initiative

  670. to make dinner

  671. and bring it over

  672. to their house

  673. and encourage them.

  674. And maybe they sent you

  675. the sweetest thank you note

  676. about how much

  677. it meant to them

  678. to know that

  679. they have a church family

  680. and they have people

  681. who care for them

  682. in that kind of way.

  683. Or maybe you took

  684. the time to meet

  685. one-on-one

  686. for several months

  687. with someone

  688. who had questions

  689. about Christianity

  690. and they came

  691. to faith in Jesus

  692. and they're walking

  693. the same path

  694. with you now.

  695. Maybe you took

  696. the difficult step

  697. of gently confronting

  698. a brother or sister

  699. who seemed to be

  700. straying

  701. from the ways

  702. of Jesus

  703. and they listened.

  704. They listened

  705. to what you said

  706. and they changed

  707. their ways

  708. and they thank you

  709. for it.

  710. Maybe you introduced

  711. yourself to someone

  712. new before

  713. or after church

  714. even though

  715. you're naturally

  716. an introvert

  717. and they were

  718. standing 10 feet away

  719. not talking to anyone

  720. alone and you were

  721. standing by yourself

  722. and honestly

  723. you would have been

  724. more comfortable

  725. just standing 10 feet

  726. away and not saying

  727. a thing.

  728. But you thought

  729. because let me go

  730. and introduce myself

  731. because that would be

  732. a blessing to them

  733. even if it's not

  734. my personality type.

  735. And maybe they now

  736. tell others how

  737. welcoming they found

  738. this church to be.

  739. Now I know

  740. it doesn't always

  741. work that way

  742. right?

  743. Sometimes you invest

  744. and you give

  745. and you

  746. share God's word

  747. and share what

  748. he's given you

  749. and you don't see

  750. multiplying fruit

  751. of your labor

  752. in the Lord.

  753. Jesus was very

  754. realistic about this

  755. in the parable

  756. of the sower.

  757. Jesus says

  758. sometimes the word

  759. falls along the path.

  760. People don't want

  761. to hear it at all.

  762. They just brush you aside.

  763. They don't thank you

  764. at all for the ways

  765. that you're trying

  766. to do good to them

  767. spiritually.

  768. They don't even care.

  769. He says sometimes

  770. the word falls

  771. on rocky ground

  772. and people get

  773. really excited

  774. about it for a little while

  775. but then when the

  776. going gets tough

  777. the excitement

  778. doesn't last.

  779. He says sometimes

  780. the word falls

  781. among thorns

  782. and it gets choked

  783. out by the worries

  784. and cares

  785. and riches

  786. of this life

  787. and it doesn't mature.

  788. But he says

  789. sometimes

  790. the word falls

  791. into good soil

  792. and takes root.

  793. And he says

  794. through perseverance

  795. over time

  796. it multiplies

  797. thirty, sixty

  798. or even a hundred

  799. fold.

  800. And you know

  801. doesn't that make

  802. it all worth it?

  803. When we see Jesus

  804. taking our humble

  805. offerings

  806. our humble efforts

  807. that we offer

  808. to him

  809. as expressions

  810. of worship

  811. and share

  812. with others

  813. and in some cases

  814. he multiplies

  815. them far more

  816. than we could

  817. ever expect

  818. or imagine.

  819. So Jesus

  820. is encouraging us

  821. invest

  822. for him.

  823. Abide in him

  824. invest

  825. for him

  826. and don't

  827. hold back.

  828. Bring what you have

  829. to Jesus

  830. and let him

  831. multiply what you offer.

  832. Third

  833. abide in him

  834. invest for him

  835. and finally

  836. be restored

  837. through him.

  838. Jesus reminds us

  839. of our dependence

  840. he reminds us

  841. of his power

  842. to multiply

  843. what we invest

  844. in his kingdom

  845. but finally

  846. he reminds us

  847. of our failure

  848. and his forgiveness.

  849. You know

  850. when we look back

  851. honestly

  852. on our lives

  853. whether it's

  854. just the last week

  855. or the last year

  856. or the last decade

  857. we look honestly

  858. we will be reminded

  859. not only

  860. of our dependence

  861. on him

  862. and his abundant

  863. provision for us

  864. or our investment

  865. in his kingdom

  866. and his multiplying

  867. of our efforts

  868. but we will also

  869. be reminded

  870. of our shameful

  871. failures

  872. and our darkest

  873. moments.

  874. verse 9 says

  875. Jesus made a charcoal

  876. fire

  877. on the beach

  878. the only other time

  879. in the entire Bible

  880. where a charcoal

  881. fire is mentioned

  882. is three chapters

  883. beforehand

  884. in John chapter 18

    John 18:18

  885. verse 18

  886. and Jesus was on trial

  887. before the high priest

  888. and Peter

  889. was standing

  890. in the courtyard

  891. and the servants

  892. and officers

  893. had made a charcoal

  894. fire because it was cold

  895. and three times

  896. someone asked Peter

  897. Peter

  898. you aren't

  899. one of

  900. that man's

  901. disciples

  902. are you

  903. and three times

  904. he replied

  905. I'm not

  906. Peter said

  907. more than a few

  908. stupid things

  909. in the course

  910. of his

  911. life with Jesus

  912. but that night

  913. had been the worst

  914. of them all

  915. the same night

  916. that Jesus

  917. was handed over

  918. to die

  919. and what we see

  920. here

  921. is that knowing

  922. his past

  923. failure

  924. Jesus pursues

  925. Peter

  926. with forgiveness

  927. you know

  928. Jesus doesn't

  929. wait

  930. for Peter

  931. to approach him

  932. with repentance

  933. instead

  934. he pursues him

  935. with forgiveness

  936. sometimes

  937. if we have been

  938. wronged

  939. our response

  940. is simply

  941. to wait

  942. for the other

  943. person to approach

  944. us with repentance

  945. we say

  946. they wronged

  947. me

  948. they ought

  949. to take

  950. the initiative

  951. to make

  952. amends

  953. if they

  954. genuinely

  955. repent

  956. I'll consider

  957. forgiving

  958. them

  959. but they

  960. ought to

  961. make the

  962. first move

  963. but that

  964. is not

  965. what Jesus

  966. does

  967. here

  968. or with

  969. us

  970. generally

  971. Jesus

  972. doesn't

  973. wait

  974. for us

  975. to repent

  976. he

  977. graciously

  978. pursues

  979. us

  980. with his

  981. forgiveness

  982. now

  983. how does

  984. Jesus

  985. do that

  986. well

  987. first

  988. he

  989. brings

  990. us

  991. face

  992. to

  993. face

  994. with

  995. our

  996. past

  997. failure

  998. Jesus

  999. approached

  1000. Simon

  1001. Peter

  1002. and took

  1003. him

  1004. aside

  1005. Simon

  1006. son

  1007. of

  1008. John

  1009. do

  1010. you

  1011. love

  1012. me

  1013. more

  1014. than

  1015. these

  1016. now

  1017. you

  1018. might

  1019. wonder

  1020. why

  1021. does

  1022. Jesus

  1023. apparently

  1024. compare

  1025. Simon's

  1026. love

  1027. for

  1028. Jesus

  1029. with

  1030. the

  1031. other

  1032. disciples

  1033. love

  1034. for

  1035. Jesus

  1036. why

  1037. does

  1038. he

  1039. ask

  1040. him

  1041. do

  1042. you

  1043. love

  1044. me

  1045. more

  1046. than

  1047. they

  1048. do

  1049. well

  1050. on

  1051. the

  1052. night

  1053. that

  1054. Jesus

  1055. was

  1056. arrested

  1057. that's

  1058. exactly

  1059. what

  1060. Peter

  1061. said

  1062. you

  1063. will

  1064. all

  1065. fall

  1066. away

  1067. but

  1068. after

  1069. I'm

  1070. raised

  1071. up

  1072. I'll

  1073. go

  1074. ahead

  1075. of

  1076. you

  1077. to

  1078. Galilee

  1079. and

  1080. Peter

  1081. immediately

  1082. replied

  1083. even

  1084. though

  1085. they

  1086. all

  1087. fall

  1088. away

  1089. I

  1090. will

  1091. not

  1092. and

  1093. later

  1094. that

  1095. night

  1096. Peter

  1097. had

  1098. denied

  1099. Jesus

  1100. three

  1101. times

  1102. and

  1103. so

  1104. Jesus

  1105. asked

  1106. do

  1107. you

  1108. love

  1109. me

  1110. more

  1111. than

  1112. these

  1113. in

  1114. other

  1115. words

  1116. he

  1117. was

  1118. bringing

  1119. Peter

  1120. to

  1121. face

  1122. this

  1123. question

  1124. would

  1125. will

  1126. you

  1127. confuse

  1128. your

  1129. love

  1130. me

  1131. with

  1132. a

  1133. false

  1134. sense

  1135. of

  1136. superiority

  1137. over

  1138. all

  1139. the

  1140. other

  1141. disciples

  1142. and

  1143. I

  1144. think

  1145. Peter

  1146. got

  1147. it

  1148. because

  1149. he

  1150. didn't

  1151. say

  1152. yes

  1153. Jesus

  1154. I

  1155. love

  1156. you

  1157. more

  1158. than

  1159. they

  1160. do

  1161. he

  1162. just

  1163. said

  1164. yes

  1165. Lord

  1166. you

  1167. know

  1168. that

  1169. I

  1170. love

  1171. you

  1172. and

  1173. he

  1174. didn't

  1175. compare

  1176. himself

  1177. anymore

  1178. because

  1179. he

  1180. had

  1181. been

  1182. humbled

  1183. and

  1184. then

  1185. two

  1186. more

  1187. times

  1188. Jesus

  1189. asked

  1190. Peter

  1191. the same

  1192. question

  1193. do

  1194. you

  1195. love

  1196. me

  1197. verse

  1198. 17

  1199. says

  1200. Peter

  1201. was

  1202. grieved

  1203. he

  1204. was

  1205. hurt

  1206. sometimes

  1207. it's

  1208. painful

  1209. to be

  1210. brought

  1211. face to

  1212. face

  1213. with

  1214. our

  1215. past

  1216. failures

  1217. you

  1218. know

  1219. when

  1220. Jesus

  1221. pursues

  1222. us

  1223. with

  1224. his

  1225. forgiveness

  1226. he

  1227. brings

  1228. us

  1229. face

  1230. to

  1231. face

  1232. with

  1233. our

  1234. past

  1235. failure

  1236. many

  1237. times

  1238. we're

  1239. afraid

  1240. to

  1241. do

  1242. this

  1243. past

  1244. when

  1245. when

  1246. we've

  1247. been

  1248. wronged

  1249. or

  1250. when

  1251. others

  1252. have

  1253. wronged

  1254. us

  1255. and

  1256. our

  1257. instinct

  1258. is

  1259. pretend

  1260. that

  1261. nothing

  1262. ever

  1263. happened

  1264. or

  1265. sweep

  1266. it

  1267. under

  1268. the

  1269. rug

  1270. or

  1271. make

  1272. excuses

  1273. for

  1274. ourselves

  1275. or

  1276. others

  1277. or

  1278. we're

  1279. afraid

  1280. that

  1281. if

  1282. we

  1283. really

  1284. face

  1285. what

  1286. happened

  1287. that

  1288. we'll

  1289. never

  1290. be

  1291. able

  1292. to

  1293. get

  1294. beyond

  1295. it

  1296. isn't

  1297. that

  1298. why

  1299. we

  1300. don't

  1301. face

  1302. the

  1303. past

  1304. because

  1305. we're

  1306. afraid

  1307. if we

  1308. really

  1309. face

  1310. it

  1311. we'll

  1312. never

1313. get beyond. And so we suppress and deny and minimize and blame and excuse and don't talk

1314. about it and remain distant from each other, but Jesus doesn't do that. Jesus brings Peter face to

1315. face with his greatest failure, precisely so that Peter will be able to move beyond it forever.

1316. Jesus takes a far more painful route, and yet it is ultimately a far more healing and restoring

1317. route. Jesus exposes Peter's shame, Peter's unfaithfulness, Peter's impulsiveness rooted in

1318. his insecurity and fear and pride, and he does it not in order to rub salt on Peter's wounds,

1319. not to punish him, not to shame him, not to exclude him. Instead, it's as if Jesus puts his hand on

1320. Peter's shoulder and walks him back to the scene of his greatest failure by a charcoal fire in the

1321. early morning light where Peter had denied him. And in that same setting, Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd,

1322. calls Peter into a new future of faithfully following him. As you look back on the past year

1323. over the last few years or your time in New Haven, is there a dark night that haunts you?

1324. Is there a failure or series of failures that has left a stain on your memory and shame in your

1325. conscience and you wish you could forget? The good news of this passage is that Jesus forgives

1326. and heals and restores, even after our worst failures, that he walks with us to the place of our

1327. sin and folly and shame. And in that same place, he stands with us as our Savior who was crucified,

1328. bearing our sins, and as our risen Lord who sets us free from bondage, and he calls us into a new

1329. future of faithfully walking with him. He redeems and restores, and he even reinstates. Peter's past

1330. past failure did not permanently prevent him from future usefulness in God's kingdom.

1331. In fact, Jesus entrusts Peter with the responsibility to care for his people,

1332. to feed my lambs, take care of my sheep. And in verse 18, Jesus says to Peter, he basically says,

1333. one day you're going to die for me. Even though you deny me three times, even though you've said a bunch

1334. of stupid things, and you still will say some more stupid things, you will be faithful to the end.

1335. In your life and even in your death, you will bring glory to God, so follow me.

1336. The end result of Jesus' conversation with Peter is that Peter is no longer defined by his past

1337. failure. Peter has been restored and commissioned and called to follow Jesus and glorify God all the

1338. way to the end. This is the power of Jesus who pursues us with his forgiveness and calls us into a future

1339. of following him. And Peter responds, verse 20 to 21, he says one more stupid thing.

1340. Even after all this, he turned and saw John and said, Lord, what about him?

  1341. Goodness, Peter.

1342. Isn't it encouraging that Peter is one of the disciples? It means we, you can be in.

1343. Jesus said, if I want him to remain alive until I come back, what is that to you? You follow me.

1344. Abide in me. Invest for me. Be restored through me. And don't get distracted by comparing yourself to

1345. someone else. Peter was called to an active life, public preaching, sometimes getting thrown in

1346. prison for preaching about Jesus, being set free by angels, traveling from place to place, healing the

1347. sick, raising a dead person to life. Even once, he was a doer, we might say. John was a thinker,

1348. insightful and reflective and extensive writer, giving us not only his gospel, but three letters in the book

1349. of Revelation. Peter's life ended in martyrdom, bringing glory to God in his death. John lived the longest of any

1350. of the apostles, as far as we know. Which was better? Wrong question. Their callings were just different.

1351. They were both called to follow Jesus wholeheartedly, just to express that in different ways.

1352. Some of you will be called to a life of influential leadership. Others of you will be called to a life of

1353. faithful obscurity. Some of you will stay in New Haven the rest of your life until you die here. You might as well

1354. reserve the cemetery plot in advance. Some of you will go and travel the world and move 20 times in your adult life.

1355. Some of you will glorify God through public gifts of teaching and leadership. Others of you will glorify

1356. God behind the scenes by serving and showing mercy and helping and administrating.

1357. And Jesus' final word in the Gospel of John is don't compare yourself to your brother or sister in

1358. Christ. Don't be constantly looking at them. Simply look to Christ. He's the author and the

1359. finisher of our faith. He's the one who's gone before us and paved the way. He's the one who sent his

1360. spirit to equip us for everything that he's called us to. Brothers and sisters, abide in Jesus, invest for

1361. Jesus, and be restored by Jesus. Let's pray.
