  1. It's the last book in your Bible, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

  2. We are starting a series in this book.

  3. We won't be going through the whole book.

  4. We might do that some other time.

  5. This summer we'll be looking at the first few chapters

  6. and at least getting, digging into it,

  7. starting to look into its message.

  8. So let me read Revelation chapter 1,

    Revelation 1:1–8

  9. verses 1 to 8,

  10. and we're looking at tonight.

  11. Revelation chapter 1, starting verse 1.

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  12. The revelation of Jesus Christ,

  13. which God...

  14. ...by sending his angel to his servant John,

  15. who bore witness to the word of God

  16. and to the testimony of Jesus Christ even to all that he saw.

  17. Blessed is the one who reads aloud

  18. the words of this prophecy,

  19. and blessed are those who hear

  20. and who keep what is written in it,

  21. for the time is near.

  22. John,

  23. to the seven churches...

  24. ...do and peace

  25. from him who is

  26. and who was

  27. and who is to come

  28. and from the seven spirits

  29. who are before his throne

  30. and from Jesus Christ,

  31. the faithful witness,

  32. firstborn of the dead

  33. and the ruler of kings on earth.

  34. ...

  35. kingdom,

  36. priests to his God and Father,

  37. to him be glory.

  38. Behold,

  39. even though

  40. all tribes of the...

  41. ...one of him...

  42. ...the Alpha

  43. and the Omega,

  44. says the Lord God,

  45. who is and who was

  46. and who is to come.

  47. Well, ever since the early church,

  48. we have had, I think,

  49. two opposite reactions

  50. to the book of Revelation.

  51. On the one hand,

  52. some Christians have been fascinated

  53. by this book.

  54. And on the other hand,

  55. other Christians have kept

  56. their distance from it.

  57. So back in the second century,

  58. early church history,

  59. there was this group of Christians

  60. called the Montanists

  61. who were really into

  62. the book of Revelation.

  63. And they had their own

  64. really special interpretation

  65. of what it meant.

  66. They believed

  67. that the new Jerusalem

  68. was going to come down from heaven

  69. in western Turkey

  70. in two cities

  71. where they set up

  72. their sort of headquarters.

  73. And they were known

  74. for prophesying,

  75. speaking in tongues,

  76. having visions

  77. and ecstatic experiences,

  78. or so they claimed.

  79. Now, other Christians

  80. at the time

  81. didn't like these guys at all.

  82. They sort of looked at them

  83. and they're like,

  84. we don't want to be like that.

  85. And they said,

  86. you know,

  87. these guys are giving Christianity

  88. a bad name

  89. because of their weird behavior.

  90. And so many other Christians

  91. weren't that excited

  92. about the book of Revelation

  93. and some people at that time

  94. even questioned,

  95. should it really be included

  96. in the Bible?

  97. And the same pattern

  98. has sort of continued

  99. throughout history.

  100. Back in the 1970s,

  101. my wife's aunt and uncle

  102. became Christians

  103. here in Connecticut

  104. and they joined this group

  105. called The Move.

  106. and they lived on a farm

  107. in Massachusetts

  108. and they were waiting

  109. for Jesus to come again.

  110. And then they decided

  111. that they should

  112. really go off the grid

  113. and so they went

  114. to the Alaskan wilderness

  115. and went to the middle of nowhere

  116. and lived off the land

  117. and they survived.

  118. I mean,

  119. it was pretty amazing.

  120. Like,

  121. they were able to do it.

  122. They worked really hard

  123. and,

  124. but eventually

  125. the group that started

  126. as sort of an intentional

  127. Christian community

  128. coming out of the Jesus movement,

  129. stuff like that,

  130. sort of turned into something

  131. a little more like a cult

  132. and so thankfully

  133. my wife's aunt and uncle left.

  134. And,

  135. now many of us

  136. look at groups like that

  137. and say,

  138. you know,

  139. we don't want to be like that.

  140. Right?

  141. Revelation's full of

  142. weird imagery

  143. and confusing symbols

  144. and scary visions

  145. and the people

  146. who really get into the book

  147. seem to become weird

  148. and confusing and scary.

  149. And so we sort of

  150. keep our distance,

  151. right?

  152. Now,

  153. Christians have basically

  154. agreed that Revelation

  155. is part of the inspired

  156. word of God.

  157. You know,

  158. yes,

  159. there were a couple,

  160. there were people

  161. who raised questions

  162. about it at the beginning,

  163. but the church has,

  164. I think,

  165. rightly understood

  166. that the Holy Spirit

  167. was inspiring John

  168. and it should be included

  169. in the Bible.

  170. But I think many of us

  171. just don't dig deep

  172. into it.

  173. Right?

  174. You're fascinated

  175. or you're sort of

  176. hesitant.

  177. So I don't know

  178. what you are,

  179. if you fit into

  180. one of those categories

  181. or not.

  182. But tonight,

  183. we're going to dig

  184. into it.

  185. Because we believe

  186. here at Trinity,

  187. we believe that God

  188. did inspire John

  189. to write this book.

  190. And in the Bible

  191. it says,

  192. all scripture

  193. is useful,

  194. is inspired by God

  195. and useful

  196. for teaching,

  197. correcting,

  198. rebuking,

  199. and training in righteousness

  200. so that the man

  201. or woman of God

  202. may be equipped

  203. for every good work.

  204. And we think

  205. the revelation

  206. is part of that.

  207. What God has given us

  208. to equip us

  209. for every good work

  210. that he wants us

  211. to accomplish.

  212. So,

  213. tonight we're looking

  214. at the opening verses

  215. of the book

  216. and I want to ask

  217. three basic questions.

  218. First,

  219. who is this book for?

  220. Second,

  221. who is this book from?

  222. And third,

  223. what's this book about?

  224. Each of these questions

  225. are addressed

  226. in these opening verses.

  227. So first,

  228. who is this book for?

  229. Verse one,

  230. the revelation

  231. of Jesus Christ

  232. which God gave him

  233. to show to his servants

  234. the things

  235. that must soon take place.

  236. So this book is for

  237. the servants of Jesus.

  238. That means everyone

  239. who belongs to Jesus

  240. and who knows him

  241. as Savior and Lord.

  242. Now,

  243. if you're here tonight,

  244. if you're not a Christian,

  245. if you're just

  246. exploring Christianity,

  247. I hope that you'll see

  248. more about who this Jesus is.

  249. But you know,

  250. if you have a friend

  251. who's interested

  252. in exploring Christianity,

  253. don't tell them

  254. to start with this book.

  255. Okay?

  256. Start with a book like

  257. the Gospel of John

  258. or the Gospel of Mark

  259. which were actually written

  260. in order,

  261. partly in order

  262. to introduce people

  263. to Jesus

  264. for the first time

  265. and actually explain

  266. who he was,

  267. what he did,

  268. and the central message

  269. of his life.

  270. So start there

  271. and then

  272. when you read the Gospels

  273. and then read the Old Testament,

  274. then you'll be able

  275. to understand

  276. this last book of the Bible

  277. a bit better.

  278. You need some background.

  279. You know,

  280. one of the things

  281. about Revelation

  282. is it has over

  283. 300 references

  284. to the Old Testament

  285. in it.

  286. and none of them

  287. are actual quotes.

  288. So that's what makes

  289. it even more challenging.

  290. Okay?

  291. You can't just look

  292. and say,

  293. oh,

  294. here's the quotation

  295. from the Old Testament.

  296. No,

  297. it's just woven

  298. into the language

  299. of the book.

  300. But the way

  301. that you'll understand

  302. what this book means

  303. is by understanding

  304. what he's referring back to.

  305. Right?

  306. Sort of like,

  307. well,

  308. I can't give a good example.

  309. Someone who's,

  310. I was trying to think

  311. of like a song

  312. that quotes another song.

  313. Maybe if you know,

  314. you can give a good example

  315. of that.

  316. But I can't think

  317. of a good one right now.

  318. Anyway,

  319. so,

  320. this book is for

  321. the servants of Jesus.

  322. More specifically,

  323. verse 4 says,

  324. John was writing to

  325. the seven churches

  326. that are in Asia.

  327. Now,

  328. that's not what we think

  329. of as Asia.

  330. It's the Roman province

  331. of Asia Minor,

  332. which is today

  333. Western Turkey.

  334. Now,

  335. chapter 2 through 3,

  336. we have specific messages

  337. for each of these

  338. seven churches.

  339. We'll be looking

  340. at each of those

  341. one by one.

  342. But at the end,

  343. of each of those

  344. messages,

  345. so if you look down

  346. like in chapter 2,

  347. verse 7,

  348. it says,

  349. he who has an ear,

  350. let him hear

  351. what the Spirit

  352. says to the churches.

  353. In other words,

  354. there's a book

  355. for each church,

  356. but we're all

  357. supposed to listen

  358. to all the messages.

  359. In other words,

  360. the messages are relevant.

  361. Jesus wants

  362. all of his servants

  363. to listen to

  364. all the messages.

  365. And, you know,

  366. you might ask,

  367. well,

  368. why does John

  369. write to seven

  370. churches in Asia?

  371. There are actually

  372. more than seven cities

  373. in Asia that had churches.

  374. For example,

  375. we know the city

  376. of Colossae.

  377. Paul actually wrote

  378. a letter,

  379. Colossians,

  380. to that church.

  381. That's also

  382. in that same province.

  383. John doesn't mention

  384. it in Revelation.

  385. Well,

  386. I think he writes

  387. to seven churches

  388. because seven

  389. was the number

  390. throughout the Bible

  391. and especially

  392. in Revelation

  393. that symbolizes

  394. completion.

  395. And so the seven

  396. churches in Asia,

  397. they're sort of

  398. representing all

  399. Christians and all

  400. churches everywhere.

  401. And so, again,

  402. it reinforces that message.

  403. This book is for all

  404. the servants of Jesus

  405. wherever they are

  406. scattered throughout

  407. the world.

  408. And this book is also

  409. for the benefit

  410. of Jesus' servants.

  411. It's not primarily

  412. intended to be

  413. weird and confusing.

  414. In fact,

  415. the Bible says

  416. God is not a God

  417. of confusion

  418. but of order

  419. and peace.

  420. Now, it's true

  421. that Revelation

  422. can be confusing

  423. for a whole bunch

  424. of reasons.

  425. Partly it's written

  426. in a style

  427. that we're,

  428. for the most part,

  429. not familiar with.

  430. Partly it has

  431. some symbols

  432. that we might not

  433. always understand

  434. at the first read.

  435. But God has given

  436. us this book

  437. for our good.

  438. And he's given

  439. us this book

  440. not to just

  441. make things

  442. really mysterious

  443. and unclear

  444. but actually

  445. to show us

  446. something important.

  447. Verse 1 says,

  448. this is

  449. the revelation

  450. of Jesus Christ.

  451. And that word

  452. means

  453. unveiling

  454. or unfolding.

  455. Right?

  456. Opening up.

  457. Disclosing.

  458. God gave

  459. Jesus this revelation

  460. in order to show

  461. something to

  462. his servants.

  463. In order to make

  464. it known to us.

  465. Keep us in the dark.

  466. Not to hide

  467. himself from us.

  468. Not to just

  469. make us

  470. confused and

  471. wondering what

  472. in the world

  473. does it mean.

  474. But actually

  475. he knows our needs

  476. and he's given

  477. us this book

  478. for our benefit.

  479. And verse 3

  480. specifically

  481. reminds us of that.

  482. Verse 3

  483. gives a blessing

  484. to those who

  485. read this book

  486. aloud and those

  487. who hear it

  488. and keep it

  489. or hear and obey.

  490. You might wonder

  491. why does it say

  492. read aloud.

  493. Well most

  494. Christians in the

  495. ancient world

  496. didn't own books.

  497. Books were very

  498. expensive.

  499. You had to copy

  500. them by hand.

  501. You had to preserve

  502. them in the midst

  503. of all kinds of

  504. difficult weather

  505. and leaky roofs

  506. and houses that

  507. weren't as stable

  508. as those that we

  509. have today.

  510. And so most people

  511. didn't own books.

  512. And so the way

  513. that Christians

  514. came together

  515. the way that

  516. Christians read

  517. the Bible

  518. was they met

  519. together and

  520. read it aloud

  521. to one another.

  522. And that's still

  523. even today when

  524. you can read

  525. your Bible on

  526. your phone

  527. or in your

  528. own room

  529. or almost

  530. anywhere in the

  531. world there's

  532. still something

  533. unique and

  534. there's a blessing

  535. that God bestows

  536. on us when we

  537. come together

  538. and read his

  539. word aloud

  540. and hear it

  541. and take it

  542. to heart.

  543. So this book

  544. is for Jesus'

  545. servants and

  546. for our benefit.

  547. second, who

  548. is this book

  549. from?

  550. Well, on a

  551. human level

  552. it's from

  553. John who

  554. introduces himself

  555. as a servant

  556. of Jesus Christ.

  557. Most likely

  558. this was the

  559. Apostle John,

  560. the Gospel of

  561. John and the

  562. Three Letters

  563. of John.

  564. Now it's true

  565. John doesn't

  566. call himself an

  567. apostle right

  568. here, but he

  569. writes as someone

  570. who would have

  571. been well known

  572. to his readers.

  573. And it seems

  574. to be this

  575. that, you

  576. know, this

  577. John who

  578. would introduce

  579. himself without

  580. really clarifying

  581. who he is

  582. would have been

  583. already most

  584. well known to

  585. them because he

  586. was that

  587. apostle.

  588. So it's from

  589. John, but in

  590. the bigger picture

  591. it's ultimately

  592. from God.

  593. And verses

  594. four to five

  595. elaborate more

  596. on this.

  597. So look down

  598. at those verses.

  599. He says,

  600. grace to you

  601. and peace

  602. from him

  603. who is

  604. and who was

  605. and who is

  606. to come

  607. and from

  608. the seven

  609. spirits who

  610. are before

  611. his throne

  612. and from

  613. Jesus Christ

  614. the faithful

  615. witness,

  616. the firstborn

  617. of the dead

  618. and the ruler

  619. of kings

  620. on earth.

  621. So there's

  622. three clauses

  623. here.

  624. From, from,

  625. from.

  626. Right?

  627. First, from

  628. he who is

  629. and who was

  630. and who is

  631. to come.

  632. And again,

  633. here's one of

  634. these echoes

  635. of the Old

  636. Testament.

  637. It's not a

  638. quotation.

  639. But what do

  640. you think of

  641. the God who

  642. is and who

  643. was?

  644. You might

  645. think back to

  646. when God

  647. revealed himself

  648. to Moses.

  649. And how did

  650. God reveal

  651. himself to

  652. Moses?

  653. In the burning

  654. bush he said,

  655. I am who

  656. I am.

  657. Or it could

  658. be translated,

  659. I will be

  660. what I will

  661. be.

  662. Right?

  663. This God

  664. who has

  665. always

  666. existed

  667. and who

  668. always is.

  669. And who

  670. is eternal.

  671. Glorious.

  672. Who's not

  673. limited by

  674. our space

  675. or time.

  676. And the

  677. one who

  678. is to

  679. come.

  680. So he

  681. emphasizes

  682. just as

  683. God has

  684. come to

  685. his people

  686. in the

  687. past,

  688. he will

  689. come

  690. again.

  691. So,

  692. from God,

  693. who is and

  694. who was and

  695. who is to

  696. come.

  697. Second,

  698. from the

  699. seven spirits

  700. who are

  701. before his

  702. throne.

  703. Now,

  704. here's a

  705. phrase that

  706. you might

  707. read and

  708. you might

  709. say,

  710. hmm,

  711. what does

  712. that mean?

  713. Seven spirits

  714. who are

  715. before God's

  716. throne.

  717. You know,

  718. you might

  719. say,

  720. well,

  721. is that

  722. seven angels

  723. who are

  724. before God's

  725. throne?

  726. There are

  727. seven angels

  728. who come

  729. later in

  730. Revelation,

  731. who blow

  732. the trumpets

  733. and pour

  734. out the

  735. bowls of

  736. God's

  737. judgment

  738. and carry

  739. out God's

  740. judgment on

  741. the earth.

  742. You might

  743. say,

  744. is it that?

  745. Or is it

  746. something else?

  747. So,

  748. let me use

  749. this as an

  750. example,

  751. and I want

  752. to try to

  753. show you

  754. how you can

  755. figure out

  756. what a

  757. confusing

  758. phrase means,

  759. or what a

  760. phrase that

  761. you read it

  762. at first and

  763. you say,

  764. seven spirits

  765. before God's

  766. throne,

  767. what does

  768. that mean?

  769. Let me show

  770. you how to

  771. figure that

  772. out.

  773. And sometimes

  774. you'll have a

  775. clearer answer

  776. than others,

  777. but here's a

  778. few questions

  779. you can ask.

  780. Number one,

  781. does the

  782. book of

  783. Revelation

  784. explain what

  785. this phrase

  786. means directly

  787. somewhere?

  788. So,

  789. look down at

  790. verse 12,

  791. here's another

  792. example.

  793. Verse 12,

  794. John says,

  795. then I turned

  796. to see the

  797. voice that

  798. was speaking

  799. to me.

  800. On turning,

  801. I saw seven

  802. golden lampstands.

  803. You might

  804. wonder,

  805. okay,

  806. what are the

  807. seven golden

  808. lampstands?

  809. Well,

  810. verse 19,

  811. sorry,

  812. verse 20,

  813. gives you the

  814. answer.

  815. The end of

  816. verse 20,

  817. the end of

  818. the chapter,

  819. says,

  820. the seven

  821. lampstands are

  822. the seven

  823. churches.

  824. So,

  825. there are some

  826. symbols in

  827. the book of

  828. Revelation that

  829. the book actually

  830. directly explains

  831. what they mean.

  832. The seven

  833. lampstands are

  834. the seven

  835. churches.

  836. So,

  837. you say,

  838. okay,

  839. that's clear.

  840. Now,

  841. what about the

  842. seven spirits

  843. before God's

  844. throne?

  845. Well,

  846. the same

  847. phrase appears

  848. in two other

  849. places in

  850. Revelation.

  851. Okay,

  852. and if you

  853. want to find

  854. it,

  855. if you have

  856. a computer,

  857. you have a

  858. phone,

  859. go online,

  860. go to

  861. Bible Gateway,

  862. and type

  863. in the

  864. phrase.

  865. It's called

  866. a keyword

  867. search,

  868. and you'll

  869. find the

  870. places that

  871. that same

  872. phrase appears

  873. elsewhere.

  874. So,

  875. if you do

  876. that with

  877. seven spirits,

  878. you'll find

  879. that it

  880. appears in

  881. chapter 4,

  882. verse 5.

  883. So,

  884. look at

  885. chapter 4,

  886. verse 5.

  887. It says,

  888. before the

  889. throne of

  890. God,

  891. there were

  892. burning seven

  893. torches of

  894. fire,

  895. or other

  896. translations say

  897. seven blazing

  898. lamps,

  899. which are

  900. the seven

  901. spirits of

  902. God.

  903. And then

  904. look at

  905. chapter 5,

  906. verse 6,

  907. which is the

  908. other reference.

  909. Now you

  910. might say,

  911. this just

  912. seems to get

  913. more confusing.

  914. What are the

  915. seven spirits?

  916. Are they the

  917. seven eyes of

  918. God sent out

  919. into all the

  920. earth,

  921. or are they

  922. the seven

  923. blazing lamps?

  924. And what does

  925. that mean?

  926. Okay,

  927. see,

  928. so it's not

  929. giving us a

  930. direct answer,

  931. but it's

  932. making a

  933. connection

  934. between three

  935. symbols.

  936. Spirits,

  937. lamps,

  938. eyes.

  939. So,

  940. the first

  941. question is,

  942. does the

  943. book of

  944. Revelation

  945. explain what

  946. it means?

  947. And so we've

  948. seen it makes

  949. this connection,

  950. but we might

  951. say, hmm,

  952. not totally

  953. sure what to

  954. make of that.

  955. Second

  956. question,

  957. does this

  958. phrase appear

  959. somewhere in

  960. the Old

  961. Testament?

  962. Now if you

  963. type in

  964. seven spirits,

  965. it doesn't.

  966. But if you

  967. type in

  968. seven eyes,

  969. or seven

  970. lamps,

  971. it does.

  972. So go to

  973. Zach 4.

  974. Because that

  975. is the

  976. reference.

  977. It is page

  978. 794.

  979. A few

  980. Bible.

  981. So Zachariah

  982. chapter 4,

  983. verse 2.

  984. So Zachariah

  985. chapter 4,

  986. it's a

  987. vision.

  988. Okay,

  989. Zachariah's

  990. having a

  991. vision,

  992. just like

  993. John is

  994. having a

  995. vision.

  996. And he

  997. says,

  998. the angel

  999. who talked

  1000. with me,

  1001. I'll start

  1002. at chapter

  1003. 4,

  1004. verse 1,

  1005. the angel

  1006. woke me up

  1007. like a man

  1008. who's awakened

  1009. out of his

  1010. sleep,

  1011. and he

  1012. said to

  1013. me,

  1014. what do

  1015. you see?

  1016. I said,

  1017. I see and

  1018. behold a

  1019. lampstand,

  1020. all of gold,

  1021. with a bowl

  1022. on top of it

  1023. and seven

  1024. lamps on it.

  1025. Okay,

  1026. so we have

  1027. seven lamps.

  1028. So he's

  1029. with seven

  1030. lamps.

  1031. In other

  1032. words,

  1033. seven

  1034. torches

  1035. of fire.

  1036. Then as

  1037. you go

  1038. through the

  1039. chapter,

  1040. verse 4,

  1041. he says,

  1042. well,

  1043. what are

  1044. these?

  1045. And the

  1046. angel doesn't

  1047. answer directly

  1048. at first.

  1049. He at first

  1050. says,

  1051. don't you

  1052. know?

  1053. He says,

  1054. nope.

  1055. Verse 6,

  1056. then he

  1057. said to

  1058. me,

  1059. this is

  1060. the word

  1061. of the

  1062. Lord,

  1063. not by

  1064. might nor

  1065. by power,

  1066. but by

  1067. my

  1068. spirit,

  1069. says the

  1070. Lord of

  1071. hosts.

  1072. And he

  1073. goes on to

  1074. promise that

  1075. by the

  1076. power of

  1077. the Holy

  1078. Spirit,

  1079. God's

  1080. temple will

  1081. be rebuilt

  1082. and God's

  1083. people will

  1084. be renewed

  1085. and God's

  1086. grace will

  1087. be poured

  1088. out.

  1089. Now look

  1090. down at

  1091. verse 10.

  1092. And this

  1093. is where

  1094. it might

  1095. start to

  1096. come together

  1097. for you.

  1098. Verse 10,

  1099. he says,

  1100. these seven

  1101. are the

  1102. eyes of

  1103. the Lord

  1104. which range

  1105. through the

  1106. whole earth.

  1107. Aha!

  1108. Right?

  1109. So in

  1110. Zechariah we

  1111. have,

  1112. so right,

  1113. Revelation,

  1114. we have seven

  1115. lamps,

  1116. seven

  1117. spirits,

  1118. seven

  1119. eyes.

  1120. In

  1121. Zechariah we

  1122. have seven

  1123. lamps,

  1124. seven

  1125. eyes,

  1126. and by

  1127. my

  1128. spirit.

  1129. The

  1130. spirit of

  1131. God.

  1132. The

  1133. Holy

  1134. Spirit of

  1135. God.

  1136. So that

  1137. would seem

  1138. to indicate

  1139. that the

  1140. seven

  1141. spirits could

  1142. be a

  1143. reference to

  1144. the Holy

  1145. Spirit of

  1146. God who

  1147. renews God's

  1148. people and

  1149. pours out

  1150. his grace

  1151. upon them.

  1152. And that

  1153. also makes

  1154. sense,

  1155. if you go

  1156. back to

  1157. Revelation,

  1158. in verse

  1159. four and

  1160. five.

  1161. Because you

  1162. have grace

  1163. and peace

  1164. from God

  1165. who is and

  1166. was and

  1167. will be,

  1168. and from the

  1169. seven spirits

  1170. and from

  1171. Jesus Christ.

  1172. So you have

  1173. God the

  1174. Father,

  1175. Jesus Christ the

  1176. Son,

  1177. and God the

  1178. Holy Spirit,

  1179. so that would

  1180. seem to make

  1181. sense.

  1182. But then you

  1183. might say,

  1184. well, why does

  1185. he say seven

  1186. spirits?

  1187. Right?

  1188. Why does he

  1189. make it confusing

  1190. for us?

  1191. Why doesn't

  1192. he just say

  1193. from the

  1194. Holy Spirit?

  1195. Well, look

  1196. at verse

  1197. four.

  1198. John, to

  1199. the seven

  1200. churches that

  1201. are in

  1202. Asia.

  1203. Right?

  1204. The seven

  1205. churches are

  1206. the servants

  1207. of Jesus

  1208. Christ gathered

  1209. together everywhere.

  1210. The seven

  1211. spirits, I

  1212. think is a

  1213. reference to

  1214. the spirit of

  1215. Jesus powerfully

  1216. at work among

  1217. his people

  1218. everywhere.

  1219. the seven

  1220. churches

  1221. represent God's

  1222. people everywhere.

  1223. The seven

  1224. spirits, it's

  1225. sort of an

  1226. image of God's

  1227. Holy Spirit

  1228. resting upon

  1229. his people

  1230. everywhere as

  1231. they gather

  1232. together.

  1233. Right?

  1234. And it goes

  1235. along with the

  1236. lampstand imagery,

  1237. right?

  1238. If the seven

  1239. lampstands are

  1240. the seven

  1241. churches, think

  1242. of that, think

  1243. of our church,

  1244. our group of

  1245. people who

  1246. gather together,

  1247. right?

  1248. We're a

  1249. lampstand.

  1250. And on

  1251. top of it is

  1252. that blazing

  1253. torch of the

  1254. Holy Spirit's

  1255. presence who's

  1256. among us.

  1257. So that's what

  1258. he's saying.

  1259. And I think

  1260. that's a little

  1261. bit of how we

  1262. can sort of

  1263. figure out some

  1264. of these phrases

  1265. in Revelation

  1266. that seem a

  1267. little confusing

  1268. at first.

  1269. And again, it

  1270. takes a little

  1271. while, right?

  1272. Sometimes you've

  1273. got to dig deep

  1274. into the Old

  1275. Testament and put

  1276. some things

  1277. together.

  1278. But it makes

  1279. sense.

  1280. that the

  1281. Holy Spirit

  1282. is that

  1283. burning lamp,

  1284. that shining

  1285. light who

  1286. comes among

  1287. us, who

  1288. descends upon

  1289. us, and who

  1290. empowers us to

  1291. shine with

  1292. God's glory as

  1293. we faithfully

  1294. witness to Jesus

  1295. Christ throughout

  1296. the world.

  1297. So that's the

  1298. spirits.

  1299. The Holy

  1300. Spirit upon

  1301. God's

  1302. churches.

  1303. All right,

  1304. going on.

  1305. Verse 5,

  1306. from Jesus

  1307. Christ, Jesus

  1308. is described as

  1309. the faithful

  1310. witness, the

  1311. firstborn of the

  1312. dead, and the

  1313. ruler of the

  1314. kings on earth.

  1315. And all these

  1316. three titles of

  1317. Jesus,

  1318. characteristics of

  1319. who he is,

  1320. are going to

  1321. come back.

  1322. We'll see them

  1323. more as we go

  1324. through Revelation.

  1325. So Jesus is the

  1326. faithful witness.

  1327. He was faithful to

  1328. the point of

  1329. death.

  1330. And he's the

  1331. one who

  1332. strengthens us

  1333. to faithfully

  1334. witness to him

  1335. wherever we go.

  1336. Jesus is the

  1337. firstborn from

  1338. the dead.

  1339. He's the one

  1340. who's the first

  1341. one who has

  1342. triumphed over

  1343. death in his

  1344. resurrection, and

  1345. he's the one who

  1346. promises and

  1347. guarantees that

  1348. we who believe

  1349. in him will be

  1350. raised with him

  1351. forever.

  1352. And the ruler of

  1353. the kings on

  1354. earth, Revelation

  1355. was written to

  1356. people who were

  1357. persecuted under

  1358. the Roman Empire.

  1359. And he says to

  1360. them, Jesus

  1361. Christ is the

  1362. ruler of the

  1363. kings on earth.

  1364. He is more

  1365. powerful and

  1366. more enduring, and

  1367. his authority will

  1368. endure forever more

  1369. than any human

  1370. government, more than

  1371. any human leader,

  1372. more than any

  1373. regime that's

  1374. persecuting you.

  1375. So it's, it's, he's

  1376. giving a word of

  1377. comfort, but also a

  1378. call to be faithfully

  1379. and unswervingly loyal

  1380. to Jesus above

  1381. everything else.

  1382. All right.

  1383. So who's this book

  1384. for?

  1385. It's for all the

  1386. servants of Jesus

  1387. everywhere.

  1388. Who's this book

  1389. from?

  1390. God the Father, Son,

  1391. and Holy Spirit.

  1392. And third, what's

  1393. this book about?

  1394. All right.

  1395. Now, verse one

  1396. says, God gave

  1397. Jesus this revelation

  1398. to show to his

  1399. servants the things

  1400. that must soon take

  1401. place.

1402. Now this is sort of

  1403. one of the big

  1404. debates in the book

  1405. of Revelation is,

  1406. what are these things

  1407. that must soon take

  1408. place?

  1409. And what does that

  1410. mean since John was

  1411. writing almost 2,000

  1412. years ago?

1413. I mean, he said it

  1414. was supposed to be

  1415. soon.

1416. As he, you know, so

  1417. some people say,

  1418. some people say,

  1419. John was talking

  1420. mostly about events

  1421. that were just about

  1422. to happen in his

  1423. time, in the first

  1424. century.

  1425. In the book, we

  1426. really have to

  1427. understand the

  1428. ancient context and

  1429. ancient history and

  1430. the world that John

  1431. lived in.

  1432. So that's the main

  1433. interpretation of

  1434. Revelation.

  1435. Most people, I

  1436. think, take another

  1437. view and say

  1438. Revelation is mostly

  1439. about future events

  1440. and particularly about

  1441. the things that are

  1442. going to happen

  1443. immediately leading up

  1444. to the return of

  1445. Jesus.

  1446. Right?

1447. We all agree how it

  1448. ends, right, with

  1449. Jesus comes again.

  1450. Right?

  1451. But many people say

  1452. most of Revelation is

  1453. about those things

  1454. that are in the

  1455. generation or so

  1456. before Jesus returns.

  1457. And so people often

  1458. try to be guessing,

  1459. and people have

  1460. always done this

  1461. throughout history,

  1462. is try to say,

  1463. hmm, maybe the

  1464. beast is this.

  1465. Or maybe 666 is,

  1466. you know, this

  1467. political leader today.

  1468. Other people say

  1469. Revelation is more

  1470. symbolic.

  1471. And it sort of

  1472. reflects patterns that

  1473. often happen throughout

  1474. history.

  1475. And so it's not

1476. meant to be a sort

  1477. of chronological thing

1478. and it's not to be

  1479. only for one time

  1480. or another.

  1481. So you might say,

  1482. well, what one of

  1483. those views is the

  1484. best one?

  1485. In some sense, I'm

  1486. going to say there's

  1487. some truth in all

  1488. three of them, right?

  1489. John was writing to

  1490. people in the first

  1491. century.

  1492. And God inspired him

  1493. to write a letter

  1494. that would be

  1495. encouraging them to

  1496. stand firm and

  1497. stand fast despite

  1498. persecution and

  1499. hardship.

  1500. And so whatever

  1501. Revelation means,

  1502. it has to be

  1503. something that

  1504. would have meant

  1505. something to the

  1506. people back then

  1507. and that would

  1508. have encouraged

  1509. them and pointed

  1510. them to be

  1511. faithful to Jesus.

  1512. And so that's the

  1513. truth in the first

  1514. view.

  1515. Truth in the second

  1516. view is

  1517. Revelation, it has

1518. to be not only for

  1519. the first century but

  1520. also for God's people

  1521. throughout history.

  1522. Right?

  1523. Not only in

  1524. John's time, not

  1525. only in the last

  1526. generation before

  1527. Jesus returns, but

  1528. for all God's

  1529. people throughout

  1530. history.

  1531. And of course it

  1532. will be for the

  1533. last generation of

  1534. Christians who see

  1535. Jesus return in

  1536. person.

  1537. So some of you

  1538. are like, ah, he's

  1539. avoiding the question.

  1540. He's just saying

  1541. there's some truth in

  1542. all three views.

  1543. We'll get into this

  1544. more.

1545. You can ask in the

  1546. we'll have Q&A

  1547. tonight so you can

  1548. ask more questions.

  1549. But again, there's a

  1550. verse from the Old

  1551. Testament that sheds a

  1552. little bit more light

  1553. on this.

  1554. So John talks about

  1555. the things that must

  1556. soon take place, or

  1557. if you look at

  1558. chapter 4 verse 1, he

  1559. uses a similar

  1560. phrase.

  1561. I will show you

  1562. what must take

  1563. place after this.

1564. If you go back to

  1565. Daniel chapter 2,

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

1566. I'm just going to do

  1567. this as the last

  1568. Old Testament

  1569. reference.

  1570. But Daniel is

1571. pretty key in a lot

  1572. of things.

  1573. Daniel chapter 2,

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  1574. page 739, if you're

  1575. looking at a few

  1576. Bible.

  1577. So basically, King

  1578. Nebuchadnezzar has a

  1579. dream about four

  1580. successive world

  1581. empires.

  1582. His own, the

  1583. Babylonian, and then

  1584. the Persians, and then

  1585. the Greeks, and the

  1586. Romans.

1587. And if you look at

  1588. verse 44, it says,

1589. in the days of those

  1590. kings, particularly the

  1591. fourth kingdom, the

  1592. God will break in

  1593. pieces all these

  1594. kingdoms, and bring

1595. them to an end, and

  1596. it shall stand forever.

1597. And then at the end

1598. of verse 45, it says,

1599. a great God has made

  1600. known to the king

  1601. what shall be after

  1602. this.

  1603. So what he's talking

  1604. about, first of all,

  1605. he's talking about the

  1606. coming of Jesus Christ.

  1607. Christ came into this

  1608. world, 2000, at the

  1609. time of the Roman

  1610. Empire.

  1611. And so Daniel was

  1612. prophesying and looking

  1613. forward to the coming

  1614. of Jesus Christ, who

  1615. established God's

  1616. kingdom on earth.

1617. But he also says that

  1618. that kingdom that Jesus

  1619. established is going to

  1620. endure forever, and

1621. that it will bring all

  1622. other kingdoms to an

1623. end, and it will stand

  1624. forever.

  1625. forever.

1626. And verse 45 uses that

  1627. phrase, what shall be,

1628. God has made known to

1629. the king, what shall be

  1630. after this.

  1631. And that's the same

1632. phrase that John uses in

  1633. the book of Revelation.

1634. So you might say, well,

  1635. what's the connection, and

1636. why does he make that

  1637. connection?

1638. Why does he use that?

  1639. Well, he's using that

  1640. phrase because what he

1641. wants to say is, first of

  1642. all, Daniel's prophecy has

  1643. come true.

1644. That Jesus Christ is the

  1645. Messiah, he's come into

1646. the world, and by his

  1647. life and death and

  1648. resurrection, he's

  1649. established God's kingdom

  1650. on earth among his

  1651. people.

  1652. And John's also saying

  1653. that that kingdom that

  1654. Jesus established, where

1655. he rules and reigns and

  1656. brings life and healing

  1657. and salvation to his

  1658. people, that kingdom is

  1659. going to remain forever,

1660. and it's going to be

  1661. established in his

  1662. fullness when he comes

  1663. again.

  1664. And right now, we're

  1665. living between that

  1666. first coming of Jesus,

  1667. and that second coming

  1668. of Jesus.

1669. And what John is saying

1670. is, it's sort of like

  1671. we're living in sudden

  1672. death over time.

1673. Okay, I grew up playing

  1674. ice hockey.

1675. The way it goes in the

1676. playoffs of ice hockey is

1677. you play, and if you're

1678. tied, you go into sudden

  1679. death over time.

1680. And sudden death over time

1681. could actually go on for a

1682. long time, but the minute

  1683. somebody scores a goal, it's

  1684. all over.

  1685. The game's over.

1686. And it could be over at

  1687. any time.

1688. And so whenever you go out

  1689. there, you play your

  1690. hardest, because you know

1691. that the end could come

1692. any time, and the end is

1693. near, and you're in sudden

  1694. death.

  1695. And that's basically what

  1696. John is saying.

1697. All right, at the end of

1698. verse 1, he says the time

  1699. is near.

  1700. In 1 John, John's first

  1701. epistle, 1 John 2, 18, he

1702. says, children, this is the

  1703. last hour.

  1704. He doesn't even say it's the

  1705. last day or year.

1706. He says this is the last

  1707. hour.

1708. And he says, as you've heard

  1709. that Antichrist is coming,

1710. so now many Antichrists have

1711. come, therefore we know it's

  1712. the last hour.

1713. So he sort of, you know,

1714. there's going to be a lot of

1715. things that are going to be

1716. happen sort of in this,

  1717. between Jesus' first coming

1718. and his second coming, but

1719. the end is always near.

1720. And we need to live knowing

  1721. that that's true.

1722. And live giving our full

  1723. allegiance to Jesus, and

  1724. trusting that he's in

1725. control, and living our lives

  1726. fully and unreservedly for

  1727. him.

  1728. And that's, you know, that's

1729. sort of the main point of

  1730. Revelation.

1731. He's saying, things are in

1732. God's hands, and Jesus is

1733. going to win, so stand firm,

  1734. and don't waver.

1735. And don't grab onto something

1736. else as your ultimate hope.

1737. But stand firm and hold onto

1738. Jesus, because he's going to

  1739. win.

1740. And he says he's brought us

  1741. into his kingdom.

1742. This is verse 5 in Jesus.

1743. He's freed us from our sins by

  1744. his blood.

1745. He's that ultimate Passover lamb

  1746. who's the sacrifice, who's paid

  1747. the price for us.

  1748. He's made us a kingdom and

1749. priests, just like God made

1750. Israel in the Old Testament a

1751. kingdom and priests, just as

1752. God called Adam and Eve to be

1753. rulers and priests, rulers over

  1754. his creation, and priests

  1755. worshiping before his throne.

1756. Christ has come and through him,

  1757. we can fulfill that.

1758. And verse 7, so again, verse 6

1759. talks about what Christ has done in

  1760. establishing his kingdom.

1761. Verse 7 talks about that he's going

  1762. to come again.

1763. He'll come with the clouds, every

1764. eye will see him, even those who

  1765. pierce him.

1766. All tribes of the earth will wail on

  1767. account of him.

1768. He will reign over the nations, and

1769. the response is, even so, amen.

  1770. Amen.

  1771. So what's Revelation about?

1772. It's about the time between Jesus'

  1773. first and second coming.

1774. But it's not just about a time, or

1775. about events, or about things that

1776. are going to happen, it's about the

  1777. person of Jesus himself.

1778. It's about the person of God, the

1779. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

1780. And that's what shines through, right,

1781. in this introduction, and really

  1782. throughout the book.

1783. And so I want to encourage you, you

  1784. know, if you're someone who's

1785. fascinated by Revelation, maybe you're

1786. sort of wondering, ooh, what does he

  1787. think about the rapture?

1788. What does he think about the

  1789. tribulation?

1790. What does he think about the

1791. millennium, and the mark of the beast,

1792. and 666, and let me remind you, this

1793. book is primarily not about the

1794. details, but the book is primarily

  1795. about King Jesus.

1796. And it's meant to lead us to worship

  1797. at his throne.

1798. So we can talk about the details, but

1799. don't lose the forest for the trees.

1800. It's about King Jesus, and leading us

1801. to worship at his throne, and to say

1802. praise and glory be to the only God who

1803. is and was and who is to come, to him

1804. be glory and dominion forever and ever,

  1805. amen and amen.

  1806. Amen.

  1807. Let's pray.

1808. Father, we thank you for this book.

1809. Lord, we thank you that for how you've

1810. revealed yourself to us in your word, and

1811. how this book just wraps up your great

1812. revelation throughout the Bible, and how it

  1813. shows us your glory.

1814. Lord, we pray that you would open our

1815. eyes as we study it.

1816. Lord, we pray that we would not shy away

1817. from it out of fear, or out of past

1818. confusion, or even bad experiences, or...

1819. But Lord, we pray that we would not be

1820. fascinated in an unhealthy way with the

1821. details, and miss the main point.

1822. As our Savior, as our great God.

1823. Lord, we pray that we would also see your work

1824. more fully, the work of the Father, and the

1825. Son, and the Holy Spirit, and the way that you

1826. work in harmony, as one God in three persons.

1827. And Lord, we pray all these things in Jesus' name.

  1828. Amen.

  1829. Amen.

  1830. Amen.

  1831. Amen.

  1832. Amen.

  1833. Amen.

  1834. Amen.

  1835. Amen.

  1836. Amen.

  1837. Amen.

  1838. Amen.

  1839. Amen.

  1840. Amen.

  1841. Amen.

  1842. Amen.

  1843. Amen.

  1844. Amen.

  1845. Amen.

  1846. Amen.

  1847. Amen.

  1848. Amen.

  1849. Amen.

  1850. Amen.

  1851. Amen.

  1852. Amen.

  1853. Amen.

  1854. Amen.

  1855. Amen.

  1856. Amen.

  1857. Amen.

  1858. Amen.

  1859. Amen.

  1860. Amen.
