  1. And seven stars, I know your works.

  2. You have the reputation of being alive when you are dead.

  3. Wake up and strengthen what remains and is about to die,

  4. for I have not found your works complete in sight of my God.

  5. Remember, then, what you received and heard.

  6. Keep it and repent.

  7. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief,

  8. and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.

  9. Yet, you have still a few names in Sardis,

  10. people who have not soiled their garments,

  11. and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.

  12. The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments,

  13. and I will never cast his name out of the book of life.

  14. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

  15. He who has near, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  16. When I was a kid, our family took a vacation to California once,

  17. and while we were there, we went to this church called the Crystal Defeat Room.

  18. When it was built, it was the largest glass building in the world,

  19. 10,000 paintings of glass, specially built to withstand 8.0 earthquake.

  20. It seated 3,000 people for multiple services on Sundays.

  21. The pastor was in the National TV program,

  22. and when we went there, we saw their concert production.

  23. It included live donkeys, lambs, goats, peacocks, a camel, and even a tiger.

  24. It was quite impressive.

  25. Five years ago, that same church filed for bankruptcy and sold their building.

  26. Churches rise, and churches fall.

  27. Sometimes churches begin with great energy and vigor,

  28. and sometimes churches decline and eventually collapse.

  29. But very often, there's a current time in the middle

  30. when a church appears to be lively and actively outside,

  31. and on the inside, it's falling apart.

  32. And this is the case for the church in Sardis.

  33. And this letter is written to you.

  34. The first one said they had a reputation or a name of being alive,

  35. but in reality, they were dead.

  36. There was an appearance of vitality and activity

  37. and a reality of complacency and compromise.

  38. Tonight, we'll be at Jesus' words to this church

  39. that looked very impressive on the outside,

  40. and on the inside, it was dying.

  41. So if you want to look at this letter in two parts,

  42. we make those parts.

  43. First, the warning that Jesus gives in verses 2 and 3,

  44. and second, the promise that he extends in verses 4 and 5.

  45. So first, the warning that Jesus gives in verses 2 and 3.

  46. Now, a little bit of background.

  47. The city of Sardis had an impressive history.

  48. In the 6th century B.C., it was one of the most powerful cities

  49. in the ancient world.

  50. It was the capital of an ancient kingdom called Lydia.

  51. It explained the thing was it was the first city

  52. to make gold and silver coins.

  53. They mined gold from the river nearby,

  54. and they claimed to have invented the process for dying gold.

  55. The city was also in a powerful location.

  56. It was on top of a 1,500-foot cliff.

  57. Now, look at Eastrop that way.

  58. That's four times the height of Eastrop.

  59. And the city was on top of the cliff,

  60. but on three sides.

  61. It had these very steep cliff sides,

  62. and only one side was a way to reasonably approach it.

  63. And so it was almost impossible to attack and conquer.

  64. Sometimes people would say,

  65. that would be like a conquering Sardis,

  66. which meant that's impossible.

  67. The city also expanded.

  68. It had both an upper site and a lower site.

  69. It had a leader, a stadium, a temple.

  70. It had a great reputation.

  71. But by the time this letter was written,

  72. Sardis had gone into some decline.

  73. There was a magnificent temple,

  74. column 60 feet high,

  75. that's about as high as the ceiling,

  76. built in the ancient world.

  77. It had been destroyed,

  78. and it was only half rebuilt,

  79. and it was never fully rebuilt.

  80. Standing in the middle of the city,

  81. half rebuilt.

  82. 1817, there was a catastrophic earthquake.

  83. Much of the city was destroyed,

  84. and the city was rebuilt.

  85. It only was held five years,

  86. so that's the relief funds from the Roman Emperor.

  87. But it never achieved its former glory.

  88. It never got back to its glorious past.

  89. And Jesus is saying to the church of the city,

  90. he's saying beware,

  91. because the same thing can happen to your city,

  92. can also happen to your church.

  93. It gives a strong warning.

  94. There's five things that the Denver Church,

  95. two and three systems,

  96. five commands,

  97. imperatives,

  98. wake up,

  99. strengthen our veins,

  100. remember,

  101. keep,

  102. repent.

  103. It's an urgent message,

  104. sort of like a fire alarm.

  105. It's not pleasant to hear.

  106. Eminent danger,

  107. immediate response required,

  108. wake up.

  109. Jesus is saying,

  110. it's possible to have an impressive appearance.

  111. Glorious history,

  112. awesome films,

  113. and all kinds of exciting stuff going on.

  114. Even think about our own church.

  115. Turn together,

  116. glorious history.

  117. We have a pretty cool story.

  118. You can read it on our website.

  119. 15 years ago,

  120. the church was about to close.

  121. There were 20 or 30 people,

  122. and I brought a new pastor,

  123. this is the right time,

  124. and brought new life to this church.

  125. It's a pretty cool history.

  126. They're just pretty neat building.

  127. Right?

  128. If you like to take glass windows,

  129. they're pretty good at staying glass windows.

  130. They're exterminators.

  131. They're,

  132. you know,

  133. they're a special kind.

  134. They weren't in very many places.

  135. Right?

  136. We've got all kinds of exciting stuff going on.

  137. New people coming into town.

  138. Young families having kids.

  139. a great pastor,

  140. John Stav,

  141. excited to be through.

  142. But the question is,

  143. for our church,

  144. or for any church,

  145. where does all of our activity come from?

  146. Is our activity,

  147. is it rooted in a life-based relationship with Jesus,

  148. or is it motivated

  149. by all kinds of other temporary motivations?

  150. You know,

  151. people come to church,

  152. and do church stuff

  153. for all kinds of reasons.

  154. Here's just a few.

  155. Some people,

  156. some kids don't please their parents,

  157. right?

  158. That'll last until you grow up

  159. and leave the house,

  160. if that's the reason.

  161. Some people come and please their

  162. boyfriend or girlfriend.

  163. That'll last until you break up

  164. or you decide you can please

  165. your boyfriend or girlfriend

  166. in other ways,

  167. and so it doesn't matter

  168. too much about the church.

  169. Some people come with their loan,

  170. and more.

  171. Nothing better to do.

  172. Well,

  173. that'll last until you find a job,

  174. or find a new hobby,

  175. or find something else

  176. you want to do on Sundays.

  177. Some people come

  178. because they want to have power

  179. and be respected

  180. in coming to church.

  181. Maybe not sometimes in Goodhaven,

  182. maybe not in parts of the world,

  183. in parts of the country.

  184. That's the thing to do.

  185. That's the perspective of the thing to do.

  186. Some people come

  187. because they're desperate.

  188. Right?

  189. Some people realize,

  190. my life is falling apart,

  191. I don't have any money,

  192. I'm going to come on the verge

  193. of being homeless,

  194. and I need help,

  195. I need to pray,

  196. I need to go to church.

  197. And then a couple months later,

  198. their life gets better.

  199. What happens?

  200. Right?

  201. Some people come

  202. because they've been going to church

  203. and prevented them

  204. from having to deal with,

  205. it'll be sort of like a lucky charm.

  206. I went to church this Sunday,

  207. I'll be okay this week.

  208. Nothing really bad will happen to me.

  209. But then what if something

  210. really bad does happen to you?

  211. You're going to get angry,

  212. you're not going to leave.

  213. You see, all those motivations

  214. are temporary.

  215. They don't last.

  216. Now, I just don't want to sleep.

  217. Why do I come to church?

  218. Maybe it's one of those weeks,

  219. I mean, to be honest,

  220. right?

  221. I mean, I started coming to church

  222. before I knew it

  223. with my parents' property.

  224. I had no choice in that.

  225. Right?

  226. None of us start coming to church

  227. for purely God-centered reasons.

  228. We all come

  229. for a mixed reason.

  230. But the question is,

  231. over time,

  232. what does your reason become?

  233. And if you begin to see

  234. that Jesus Christ

  235. is the greatest treasure

  236. in all the world,

  237. He's the holy and awesome

  238. King of the universe,

  239. He's our merciful

  240. and faithful

  241. Savior

  242. and advocate,

  243. you begin to see that.

  244. Then,

  245. you will begin to have

  246. a truly lasting motivation

  247. to come to church

  248. and participate

  249. in church activities.

  250. And,

  251. for the rest of your life.

  252. because you'll be

  253. abiding in Jesus,

  254. that's what the Bible

  255. calls it,

  256. abiding in Jesus.

  257. Jesus said,

  258. I'm the vine,

  259. you are the branches,

  260. and you abide in me

  261. like a branch

  262. is connected to the vine

  263. and have my life

  264. flowing into you,

  265. then you'll bear

  266. the fruit,

  267. and the fruit

  268. will last.

  269. That's what Jesus says.

  270. It's a true life

  271. in a church

  272. that has to come from

  273. abiding in Jesus Christ.

  274. And you can motivate people

  275. in all kinds of other ways.

  276. But all those other ways

  277. are eventually

  278. are only going to be tempered.

  279. And they won't matter.

  280. So Jesus is warning

  281. this church in Sarnis.

  282. He says,

  283. I know it hurts.

  284. You're doing all kinds of stuff.

  285. It looks really impressive

  286. on the outside.

  287. You've got a great reputation.

  288. And I see the inside.

  289. And you're not abiding

  290. and rooted in

  291. the life of Jesus.

  292. Verse 2,

  293. he says,

  294. I've not found

  295. your works complete

  296. in the sight of my God.

  297. And I say,

  298. what does that mean?

  299. I mean,

  300. really,

  301. aren't all our works

  302. in the sight of heaven?

  303. Well,

  304. in one sense,

  305. yes.

  306. In another sense,

  307. no.

  308. In that same chapter,

  309. John 15,

  310. where Jesus is talking about

  311. abiding in Him

  312. as the mind,

  313. he says,

  314. this is like women

  315. that you love

  316. and others

  317. that you enjoy,

  318. saying be,

  319. complete

  320. or full.

  321. So when we abide in Jesus,

  322. when we obey

  323. and love each other,

  324. He gives us

  325. a fullness

  326. and a complete

  327. joy.

  328. Or in James,

  329. it says,

  330. testing your faith

  331. and persevere

  332. and let persevere

  333. and finish its work

  334. so you'll be

  335. mature and complete.

  336. See,

  337. the problem

  338. with the church

  339. in Sardis

  340. is that they

  341. weren't persevering

  342. in Jesus.

  343. They weren't

  344. abiding in Jesus,

  345. so they didn't have

  346. that completeness

  347. of joy,

  348. that completeness

  349. that God

  350. builds in us

  351. as we persevere

  352. and as we

  353. abide in Jesus.

  354. It seems like,

  355. it seems like

  356. what happened

  357. is the church

  358. in Sardis

  359. just sort of

  360. blended into

  361. the pagan society

  362. that they lived in.

  363. And the way

  364. temple opened their city,

  365. it wasn't a temple

  366. just wanted to God,

  367. it was a temple

  368. of the hearts

  369. of the Greek

  370. pagan gods.

  371. And it seemed

  372. like in this pagan city

  373. the churches

  374. just wanted to

  375. blend in.

  376. And if you notice,

  377. all the letters

  378. you've read so far

  379. in the other four

  380. churches,

  381. Ephesus,

  382. Philadelphia,

  383. Thyatira,

  384. Pergamum,

  385. all four of those

  386. churches were

  387. experiencing opposition

  388. from the outside.

  389. Or,

  390. some false teachers

  391. tried to undermine

  392. from the inside

  393. in Sardis,

  394. there's no reference

  395. to either of those.

  396. they don't seem

  397. to be facing

  398. any opposition

  399. from the surrounding

  400. altar,

  401. from the surrounding

  402. world,

  403. and they don't seem

  404. to be having

  405. any false teaching

  406. that's destroying

  407. the church,

  408. but they just

  409. were pointing in.

  410. So,

  411. they're not facing

  412. opposition

  413. because they're

  414. just,

  415. you can't really

  416. tell them

  417. to be different.

  418. So,

  419. Jesus says,

  420. wake up,

  421. spread the wrong

  422. names.

  423. Then he says,

  424. remember and repent.

  425. He tells them

  426. how to find

  427. life again.

  428. And what he

  429. basically says is,

  430. go back to where

  431. you started.

  432. Remember what you

  433. received and heard.

  434. If you get lost

  435. in the woods,

  436. I don't know if

  437. you've ever been

  438. lost in the woods,

  439. what the same

  440. thing to do

  441. is to retrace

  442. your steps

  443. until you find

  444. a landmark

  445. that you recognize.

  446. you're lost

  447. on the roads,

  448. right,

  449. my tendency is,

  450. I'm going to

  451. find a shortcut,

  452. right?

  453. There's a triangle

  454. over here,

  455. I'm going to

  456. find a shortcut.

  457. And it never

  458. works.

  459. Right?

  460. Sometimes,

  461. when I was

  462. dating my wife,

  463. we were up

  464. with my family

  465. in the White

  466. Mountains

  467. in New Hampshire,

  468. we went for a

  469. drive,

  470. watched the sunset,

  471. and we were

  472. driving on this

  473. road,

  474. and I thought,

  475. we've gone here,

  476. we're over here,

  477. we just need to

  478. go here.

  479. And I led us

  480. through a dirt

  481. road,

  482. saw a moose,

  483. and it was

  484. not best,

  485. it was a couple

  486. weeks before I

  487. was riding on the

  488. road,

  489. it wasn't quite

  490. the best thing

  491. that I did,

  492. to show my

  493. trustworthiness,

  494. right,

  495. and wisdom,

  496. or my

  497. stubbornness,

  498. we wanted to

  499. get it home,

  500. but,

  501. anyway,

  502. go back to

  503. where we

  504. started,

  505. and he said,

  506. remember what

  507. you received

  508. and heard.

  509. So,

  510. all the facts

  511. mean,

  512. remember the

  513. gospel,

  514. Jesus Christ

  515. is what he

  516. said,

  517. right?

  518. They received

  519. a message

  520. about Jesus,

  521. who lived,

  522. who died,

  523. who rose again,

  524. who ascended

  525. to heaven,

  526. who ascended

  527. in his Holy

  528. Spirit,

  529. he said,

  530. remember that.

  531. Remember the

  532. thing that

  533. first brought

  534. you to life

  535. as a Christian?

  536. What was the

  537. thing that

  538. you first heard

  539. and God did

  540. something in your

  541. heart and

  542. who said,

  543. and you woke

  544. up and got

  545. brought you to

  546. life?

  547. Remember that

  548. message,

  549. that first

  550. brought you to

  551. life,

  552. and don't

  553. never let it

  554. go.

  555. Don't ever

  556. turn away

  557. from it.

  558. turn back

  559. to the

  560. Lord Jesus.

  561. He said,

  562. Luke,

  563. the morning

  564. in the section

  565. of verse 3.

  566. He said,

  567. if you don't,

  568. wait up.

  569. If you will

  570. come,

  571. you're excused,

  572. that here

  573. this morning,

  574. I will not

  575. let you leave,

  576. and you won't

  577. know what hour

  578. I can be

  579. against you.

  580. And the people

  581. of Sardis

  582. probably will

  583. never let

  584. you

  585. back.

  586. because twice

  587. in your

  588. street,

  589. they are

  590. an uncomfortable

  591. city on top

  592. of the cliff

  593. that you

  594. conquer.

  595. And you

  596. don't mind

  597. having both

  598. times,

  599. because they

  600. weren't watchful.

  601. Right?

  602. In the

  603. 90s,

  604. Persians had

  605. a really good

  606. rock climb.

  607. And he

  608. climbed up

  609. the face

  610. of the cliff

  611. where nobody

  612. expected it to,

  613. and he

  614. found his

  615. way inside

  616. the city

  617. and then

  618. he ran

  619. to the gate

  620. and opened

  621. the gate

  622. for the

  623. army to

  624. come in.

  625. And they

  626. were coming.

  627. And then,

  628. 300 years

  629. later,

  630. it happened

  631. again.

  632. The Greeks

  633. sent 15

  634. guys who

  635. climbed up

  636. into the

  637. wreckage.

  638. And again,

  639. they thought,

  640. ah,

  641. they're going

  642. to come up

  643. that way.

  644. It's a park.

  645. We're just

  646. flying up

  647. off this hill.

  648. Nobody's

  649. ever going to

  650. talk for us

  651. until they

  652. did once

  653. before a

  654. long time

  655. to go out.

  656. It's just

  657. 300 years

  658. ago.

  659. Yes,

  660. it did.

  661. It's the

  662. same thing

  663. that we

  664. used to

  665. spiritually.

  666. But the

  667. church

  668. died.

  669. And you

  670. know,

  671. if you're

  672. in church

  673. history,

  674. there are

  675. some churches

  676. that have

  677. actually

  678. been wiped

  679. out.

  680. Christians

  681. called

  682. historians

  683. complicated

  684. and they

  685. went to

  686. China

  687. in the

  688. 7th

  689. century

  690. and

  691. established

  692. Christian

  693. churches

  694. in the

  695. 7th

  696. cities

  697. of China.

  698. But 200

  699. years later,

  700. they were

  701. completely

  702. extinct.

  703. And the

  704. reason

  705. that they

  706. died out,

  707. is the best

  708. thing you can

  709. know,

  710. is they

  711. lost

  712. their

  713. Christian

  714. distinctiveness.

  715. they

  716. became

  717. dependent

  718. on favors

  719. from the

  720. Chinese

  721. emperor,

  722. and then

  723. the emperor

  724. turned against

  725. them,

  726. and they

  727. didn't have

  728. the strength

  729. to stand

  730. on their

  731. persecution.

  732. And they

  733. blended

  734. with

  735. Buddhism and

  736. Taoism.

  737. And they

  738. lended them

  739. so much

  740. that you

  741. couldn't

  742. really tell

  743. what was

  744. Christian

  745. anymore.

  746. They

  747. lost their

  748. pursuit of

  749. distinctiveness

  750. and so

  751. they

  752. were wiped

  753. out.

  754. They

  755. didn't

  756. last.

  757. Many

  758. other

  759. examples

  760. in

  761. church

  762. history.

  763. So

  764. Jesus

  765. gave a

  766. strong

  767. warning

  768. to this

  769. church.

  770. That's

  771. the first

  772. part of

  773. his message.

  774. But he

  775. doesn't just

  776. give them

  777. a warning.

  778. In

  779. verse 4-5

  780. he also

  781. gives out

  782. a glorious

  783. promise.

  784. Verse 4-5

  785. he says

  786. yet

  787. you have

  788. still

  789. a few

  790. names

  791. and starts

  792. people who

  793. have not

  794. soiled

  795. their

  796. garments.

  797. Now

  798. first one

  799. he's speaking

  800. to the

  801. church

  802. as a

  803. reputation

  804. that's

  805. the same

  806. orphan.

  807. You have

  808. a name

  809. as a

  810. whole

  811. as a

  812. group.

  813. You have

  814. a name

  815. of people

  816. like

  817. you're

  818. dead.

  819. But

  820. then

  821. he says

  822. within

  823. this

  824. church

  825. that

  826. there's

  827. a few

  828. names

  829. a few

  830. people

  831. who

  832. still

  833. have

  834. a

  835. life

  836. human

  837. relationship

  838. with

  839. me.

  840. They

  841. haven't

  842. soiled

  843. their

  844. garments.

  845. What does

  846. that mean?

  847. A lot of

  848. phrases in

  849. your

  850. relationship

  851. that you

  852. create

  853. that

  854. you

  855. are

  856. like

  857. what

  858. does

  859. that

  860. exactly

  861. mean?

  862. Well

  863. imagine

  864. the

  865. cross

  866. prepared

  867. for

  868. wedding

  869. day.

  870. She's

  871. standing

  872. right

  873. back

  874. in that

  875. way.

  876. Doors

  877. are

  878. closed.

  879. Using

  880. display

  881. to try

  882. to make

  883. her

  884. possessing

  885. in.

  886. She

  887. looks

  888. stunning

  889. and

  890. glorious.

  891. She's

  892. been

  893. terribly

  894. prepared.

  895. She got

  896. her hair

  897. done

  898. that

  899. morning.

  900. Her

  901. cousin

  902. is

  903. standing

  904. right

  905. up

  906. the

  907. earth.

  908. They

  909. could

  910. walk

  911. you

  912. for

  913. this

  914. moment

  915. where

  916. they

  917. reunited

  918. as

  919. husband

  920. and

  921. wife.

  922. And

  923. she

  924. looks

  925. out

  926. the

  927. window

  928. and

  929. she

  930. sees

  931. a

  932. $20

  933. bill

  934. blowing

  935. across

  936. the

  937. sidewalk

  938. of

  939. the

  940. wind

  941. and

  942. it

  943. drops

  944. into

  945. the

  946. sewer

  947. drain.

  948. And

  949. she

  950. goes

  951. out

  952. the

  953. door

  954. and

  955. pulls

  956. out

  957. the

  958. cover

  959. of

  960. the

  961. sewer

  962. drain

  963. and

  964. starts

  965. descending

  966. down

  967. into

  968. the

  969. sewer

  970. to

  971. get

  972. that

  973. $20

  974. bill.

  975. And

  976. if

  977. you

  978. saw

  979. her

  980. doing

  981. that

  982. and

  983. say

  984. you're

  985. insane

  986. what

  987. are

  988. you

  989. doing

  990. wake

  991. up

  992. why

  993. did

  994. you

  995. give

  996. up

  997. the

  998. precious

  999. of what

  1000. you

  1001. have

  1002. for

  1003. something

  1004. that's

  1005. so

  1006. relatively

  1007. worthless

  1008. and

  1009. that's

  1010. what

  1011. Jesus

  1012. says

  1013. to

  1014. Christians

  1015. who

  1016. be

  1017. clothed

  1018. in the

  1019. righteousness

  1020. of Jesus

  1021. and

  1022. who

  1023. run

  1024. and

  1025. embrace

  1026. sin

  1027. he

  1028. says

  1029. that's

  1030. insane

  1031. are you

  1032. are you

  1033. defiled

  1034. are you

  1035. cultivating

  1036. the beauty

  1037. of your

  1038. relationship

  1039. with Christ

  1040. by

  1041. embracing

  1042. something

  1043. that's

  1044. contrary

  1045. to

  1046. you

  1047. instead of

  1048. trying to

  1049. be

  1050. care

  1051. because

  1052. this is

  1053. the beauty

  1054. and

  1055. sorrows

  1056. who

  1057. remember

  1058. and who

  1059. haven't

  1060. forgotten

  1061. how

  1062. precious

  1063. it is

  1064. to

  1065. belong

  1066. to

  1067. Jesus

  1068. and

  1069. despite

  1070. the

  1071. abathy

  1072. complacent

  1073. most

  1074. of the

  1075. people

  1076. in

  1077. their

  1078. church

  1079. to

  1080. say

  1081. that

  1082. is

  1083. one

  1084. of

  1085. their

  1086. perfect

  1087. now

  1088. it

  1089. doesn't

  1090. mean

  1091. they

  1092. are

  1093. perfect

  1094. first

  1095. we

  1096. ought

  1097. to

  1098. say

  1099. they

  1100. are

  1101. worthy

  1102. of

  1103. our

  1104. life

  1105. are

  1106. any

  1107. just

  1108. worthy

  1109. have

  1110. anybody

  1111. done

  1112. smaller

  1113. garments

  1114. it doesn't

  1115. mean

  1116. they're

  1117. perfect

  1118. and

  1119. flawless

  1120. in

  1121. every

  1122. way

  1123. but it

  1124. does

  1125. mean

  1126. they

  1127. held

  1128. on

  1129. to

  1130. Jesus

  1131. despite

  1132. pressure

  1133. to

  1134. give

  1135. up

  1136. they

  1137. live

  1138. lives

  1139. and

  1140. live

  1141. to

  1142. God

  1143. call

  1144. us

  1145. to

  1146. be

  1147. as

  1148. believers

  1149. right

  1150. not

  1151. as

  1152. we

  1153. worthy

  1154. of

  1155. grace

  1156. somebody

  1157. said

  1158. grace

  1159. only

  1160. but

  1161. Paul

  1162. says

  1163. the

  1164. living

  1165. life

  1166. worthy

  1167. of

  1168. the

  1169. gospel

  1170. and

  1171. Paul

  1172. says

  1173. throughout

  1174. his

  1175. letters

  1176. in fact

  1177. all

  1178. he

  1179. prays

  1180. may

  1181. our

  1182. God

  1183. be

  1184. worthy

  1185. of

  1186. his

  1187. calling

  1188. to

  1189. call

  1190. him

  1191. as

  1192. Christians

  1193. and

  1194. sometimes

  1195. God

  1196. he

  1197. described

  1198. as

  1199. worthy

  1200. group

  1201. of

  1202. Boaz

  1203. described

  1204. as

  1205. worthy

  1206. people

  1207. in other

  1208. words

  1209. faithful

  1210. people

  1211. people

  1212. call

  1213. to

  1214. be

  1215. perfect

  1216. we're

  1217. called

  1218. to

  1219. hold

  1220. on

  1221. not

  1222. keep

  1223. our

  1224. eyes

  1225. on

  1226. Jesus

  1227. Paul

  1228. he

  1229. says

  1230. in

  1231. verse 5

  1232. he

  1233. says

  1234. he

  1235. can't

  1236. hold

  1237. the

  1238. top

  1239. he

  1240. can't

  1241. fall

  1242. down

  1243. but

  1244. you

  1245. don't

  1246. just

  1247. lay

  1248. there

  1249. as

  1250. you

  1251. can

  1252. come

  1253. to

  1254. Jesus

  1255. and

  1256. lay

  1257. to

  1258. up

  1259. he

  1260. keeps

  1261. you

  1262. going

  1263. so

  1264. Jesus

  1265. has

  1266. three

  1267. promises

  1268. in

  1269. verse 5

  1270. they're

  1271. all

  1272. in

  1273. common

  1274. persevere

  1275. overcome

  1276. verse 5

  1277. the one

  1278. he

  1279. conquers

  1280. will be

  1281. closed

  1282. like this

  1283. in white

  1284. garments

  1285. that's

  1286. promise

  1287. number

  1288. one

  1289. second

  1290. I

  1291. will

  1292. never

  1293. call

  1294. his name

  1295. on

  1296. the

  1297. life

  1298. third

  1299. I

  1300. will

  1301. confess

  1302. his name

  1303. before

  1304. my

  1305. father

  1306. before

  1307. his name

  1308. he

  1309. tried

  1310. to

  1311. have

  1312. a

  1313. name

  1314. people

  1315. like

  1316. instead

  1317. there's

  1318. few

  1319. names

  1320. who've

  1321. been

  1322. faithful

  1323. and

  1324. Jesus

  1325. saying

  1326. his

  1327. promise

  1328. I

  1329. will

  1330. never

  1331. block

  1332. your

  1333. name

  1334. I

  1335. will

  1336. come

  1337. I

  1338. will

  1339. confess

  1340. his name

  1341. so

  1342. three

  1343. promises

  1344. close

  1345. in

  1346. white

  1347. garments

  1348. promises

  1349. one

  1350. day

  1351. we'll

  1352. leave

  1353. as

  1354. a

  1355. church

  1356. the

  1357. pride

  1358. of

  1359. Jesus

  1360. he

  1361. clothed

  1362. in

  1363. his

  1364. Christ

  1365. and

  1366. his

  1367. church

  1368. and

  1369. joy

  1370. you

  1371. know

  1372. back

  1373. to

  1374. us

  1375. just

  1376. now

  1377. don't

  1378. you wear

  1379. white

  1380. clothes

  1381. to a

  1382. wedding

  1383. you

  1384. can

  1385. ride

  1386. more

  1387. like

  1388. back

  1389. that

  1390. soon

  1391. or

  1392. you

  1393. know

  1394. white

  1395. to

  1396. the

  1397. world

  1398. to

  1399. the

  1400. world

  1401. to

  1402. the

  1403. world

  1404. to

  1405. the

  1406. military

  1407. victory

  1408. you

  1409. wear

  1410. white

  1411. you

  1412. first

  1413. step

  1414. back

  1415. into

  1416. the

  1417. city

  1418. and

  1419. the

  1420. great

  1421. peace

  1422. to

  1423. Jesus

  1424. saying

  1425. that we

  1426. clothed

  1427. white

  1428. garments

  1429. you'll

  1430. share

  1431. in

  1432. my

  1433. joy

  1434. in

  1435. my

  1436. eternal

  1437. victory

  1438. hold on

  1439. that's the first promise

  1440. of eternal joy

  1441. the second promise

  1442. won't be plotted out

  1443. with the broken

  1444. fire

  1445. you know

  1446. in each

  1447. Roman city

  1448. there was a list

  1449. of a register

  1450. of citizens

  1451. and when you

  1452. were born

  1453. a citizen

  1454. or when you

  1455. became

  1456. citizens

  1457. your name

  1458. was written

  1459. down

  1460. in that book

  1461. when you

  1462. died

  1463. your name

  1464. will be

  1465. erased

  1466. or if you

  1467. were good

  1468. reason

  1469. or some

  1470. other

  1471. act

  1472. deserving

  1473. definitely

  1474. your name

  1475. will be

  1476. erased

  1477. in the old

  1478. testament

  1479. there's a similar

  1480. idea that

  1481. God

  1482. has a book

  1483. and written

  1484. in that book

  1485. are all

  1486. the names

  1487. of his

  1488. righteous

  1489. people

  1490. the people

  1491. who belong

  1492. to him

  1493. and Jesus

  1494. promises

  1495. while

  1496. overcome

  1497. the way

  1498. you

  1499. make it

  1500. to the

  1501. end

  1502. your name

  1503. will never

  1504. be erased

  1505. from that

  1506. book

  1507. not to the

  1508. death

  1509. right

  1510. if you live

  1511. in

  1512. Sarnis

  1513. or a citizen

  1514. of Sarnis

  1515. you die

  1516. in grace

  1517. Jesus

  1518. says

  1519. your citizens

  1520. of my

  1521. heavenly kingdom

  1522. none

  1523. not to the

  1524. death

  1525. and separate

  1526. you

  1527. from

  1528. belonging

  1529. to me

  1530. and being

  1531. part of my

  1532. kingdom

  1533. forever

  1534. he gave that

  1535. a promise

  1536. third

  1537. promise

  1538. that would

  1539. confess

  1540. his name

  1541. to the

  1542. poor

  1543. father

  1544. and his

  1545. angels

  1546. the angels

  1547. are like

  1548. the armies

  1549. of heaven

  1550. and Jesus

  1551. made the same

  1552. promise

  1553. on earth

  1554. and his disciples

  1555. that everyone

  1556. who acknowledge

  1557. people for men

  1558. or confess

  1559. people for men

  1560. I also

  1561. will be

  1562. acknowledged

  1563. and profess

  1564. what my

  1565. father

  1566. is heaven

  1567. when I

  1568. graduated

  1569. from college

  1570. I'm the dean

  1571. of my college

  1572. all these

  1573. names

  1574. of the graduates

  1575. one by one

  1576. walked forward

  1577. received our

  1578. diplomas

  1579. from birth

  1580. took her

  1581. hand

  1582. she said

  1583. you are

  1584. now

  1585. behind all

  1586. the rights

  1587. and privileges

  1588. and responsibility

  1589. to the graduate

  1590. of this

  1591. college

  1592. now

  1593. I don't

  1594. know

  1595. maybe

  1596. you've

  1597. been in

  1598. a lot

  1599. of

  1600. graduations

  1601. sometimes

  1602. they get

  1603. boring

  1604. maybe they

  1605. don't

  1606. send

  1607. them

  1608. out

  1609. but

  1610. they're

  1611. long

  1612. long

  1613. speeches

  1614. they're

  1615. a little

  1616. boring

  1617. most people

  1618. you don't

  1619. know

  1620. why do you

  1621. go to

  1622. graduation

  1623. why do you

  1624. travel

  1625. thousands of

  1626. months

  1627. and help

  1628. every spring

  1629. to New Haven

  1630. to attend

  1631. college or

  1632. high school

  1633. or other

  1634. graduations

  1635. why do you

  1636. care

  1637. do you care

  1638. because you

  1639. come for one

  1640. person

  1641. you come to

  1642. see them

  1643. walk up to

  1644. the front

  1645. and have

  1646. your name

  1647. called

  1648. and be

  1649. publicly

  1650. honored

  1651. and publicly

  1652. recognized

  1653. and publicly

  1654. given

  1655. the

  1656. degree

  1657. they

  1658. will

  1659. receive

  1660. something

  1661. special about

  1662. what Jesus

  1663. is saying

  1664. is that

  1665. there's going

  1666. to be

  1667. a graduation

  1668. and all

  1669. renovations

  1670. and King

  1671. Jesus

  1672. is going

  1673. to

  1674. stop

  1675. one

  1676. night

  1677. he

  1678. is going

  1679. to

  1680. be

  1681. the

  1682. names

  1683. of

  1684. all

  1685. these

  1686. people

  1687. who have

  1688. been

  1689. in his

  1690. grace

  1691. that

  1692. go

  1693. forth

  1694. and he

  1695. will

  1696. confess

  1697. that

  1698. before

  1699. his

  1700. father

  1701. in

  1702. heaven

  1703. before

  1704. the

  1705. angels

  1706. before

  1707. the

  1708. arms

  1709. in

  1710. heaven

  1711. before

  1712. all

  1713. creation

  1714. years

  1715. can

  1716. saying

  1717. so

  1718. live

  1719. that

  1720. jesus

  1721. to call our enemies.

  1722. He will give us

  1723. the opportunity

  1724. that he will say,

  1725. you're my children.

  1726. You can now

  1727. rule with me

  1728. in the new creation,

  1729. in the new heavens,

  1730. in the new earth.

  1731. That's the promise.

1732. You see, Jesus gives a strong warning

  1733. to this church.

1734. That's all the sleep church

1735. that's doing all this stuff

  1736. that they've lost

1737. from the name of Jesus

  1738. as a whole.

  1739. And he says,

1740. if you have to make faithful,

  1741. hang in there.

  1742. And he says,

1743. if everyone in the Lord comes,

  1744. I'll give this promise.

  1745. Because we're part of

1746. anything you can have this world.

  1747. Hold on.

  1748. Whoever has a year,

  1749. let's hear.

  1750. The Spirit says

1751. that the church is blessed.

  1752. Let's pray.

  1753. Father,

1754. we thank you for this word

1755. to the church at Sardis.

1756. We thank you for that

  1757. you speak to us,

  1758. both as individuals

1759. and as a church body.

  1760. Lord, we pray that

1761. we would listen to the warning,

  1762. take it seriously,

1763. and pray that we would,

  1764. that it would,

1765. that we would not just guard it.

  1766. Lord, we pray that

  1767. we would remember

1768. what we have seen at the time,

  1769. and hold on,

1770. and never let it go.

  1771. And Lord,

1772. we pray that we would

  1773. fix our eyes

  1774. and pray promises.

1775. Lord, we thank you that

  1776. we promise

1777. it's greater than anything else

  1778. in this world.

1779. We pray that we would

1780. treasure you above all of us.

1781. We would say we pray.

  1782. Amen.
