  1. On page 934, Acts 25.

  2. Alright, let me read this for us, starting with verse 27.

  3. When two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Portius Festus,

  4. and desiring to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison.

  5. Now three days after Festus had arrived on the province,

  6. he went up to Jerusalem, to hold Caesarea.

  7. And the chief priests and the principal men of the Jews

  8. laid out their peace against Paul and the Jews,

  9. asking as a favor against Paul and he summoned him to Jerusalem,

  10. because they were planning an ambush to kill him on the way.

  11. Festus replied that Paul was being come to Caesarea,

  12. and he himself intended to go there shortly.

  13. So, said he, let the men of authority among you go down with him.

  14. If there is anything wrong about the man,

  15. let them break charges against him.

  16. After he stayed among them not more than eight or ten days,

  17. he went down to Caesarea.

  18. And the next day he took his seat at the tribunal

  19. and ordered Paul to be brought.

  20. When he had arrived, the Jews were come down,

  21. and Jerusalem stood around him,

  22. bringing many serious charges against him

  23. that they could not prove.

  24. Paul argued in his offense,

  25. neither against all the Jews,

  26. nor against the temple, nor against Caesar,

  27. have I committed any offense.

  28. But Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor,

  29. said to Paul,

  30. Do you wish to go up to Jerusalem?

  31. Can there be tried on these charges before me?

  32. But Paul said,

  33. I am standing before Caesar's tribunal,

  34. for I ought to be tried.

  35. To the Jews, I have done no wrong,

  36. as you yourself know very well.

  37. If then I am wrong,

  38. you are going to have committed anything

  39. for which I deserve to die.

  40. I do not seek to escape death.

  41. But if there is nothing but their charges against me,

  42. no one can give me up to them.

  43. I have to as a Caesar.

  44. Then Festus came and conferred with his counsel,

  45. answered,

  46. To Caesar, you have a meal.

  47. To Caesar, you shall go.

  48. Now in some days in the past,

  49. Agrippa the king and her niece

  50. arrived at Caesarea and greeted Festus.

  51. And as they stayed there many days,

  52. Festus laid a false case before the king,

  53. saying,

  54. There is a man left prisoner by feelings,

  55. and when I was at Jerusalem,

  56. the chief priests and the elders of the Jews

  57. laid out their case against him,

  58. asking for a sentence of condemnation against him.

  59. I answered them that it was not the custom

  60. of the Romans to give up anyone

  61. before the accused met the accusers face to face

  62. and had opportunity to make his defense

  63. concerning the charge of it against him.

  64. So when they came together here,

  65. I made no delay,

  66. but on the next day,

  67. I took my seat to the tribunal

  68. and ordered the man to be brought.

  69. When the accusers stood up,

  70. they brought no charge in his case

  71. of such evils as I supposed.

  72. Rather, they had certain points of dispute

  73. with him about their own religion

  74. and about a certain Jesus,

  75. who was dead,

  76. but who all asserted to be alive.

  77. Being at a false side of investigating

  78. these questions,

  79. I asked whether he wanted to go to Jerusalem

  80. and we tried there regarding him.

  81. The colonel had appealed to be kept in custody

  82. for the decision of the emperor.

  83. I ordered him to be held

  84. until I could save him to see him.

  85. Then a crampus said to Festus,

  86. I would look at the man myself.

  87. Tomorrow's the end of the year.

  88. Well, here we are.

  89. We're nearing the end of the book of Acts.

  90. And as Luke draws his account

  91. from the early church to a close,

  92. he's presenting us with the account

  93. of Paul's trials and defense.

  94. Five times, we find here,

  95. Paul will be brought before various authorities.

  96. And each time, he will offer a speech.

  97. And here in chapter 25,

  98. this is the fourth of these defenses.

  99. Next week, we'll get to the climax

  100. of Paul and chapter 26.

  101. But for now, you know,

  102. it's worth asking, isn't it,

  103. why is Luke spending so much time

  104. recounting this part of Paul's life?

  105. Maybe you're wondering the same thing.

  106. I mean, for the last four weeks,

  107. if you've been following our sermon series,

  108. Paul has been in prison,

  109. defending himself against baseless charges.

  110. I mean, for a whole month here at Trinity,

  111. it's like the record has been skipping.

  112. Each week, Paul in prison, in defense.

  113. And you know what?

  114. We have two more chapters to go.

  115. Why is Luke spending so much time

  116. on this part of the story?

  117. Well, on the one hand,

  118. he's building a case for Paul's innocence,

  119. isn't he?

  120. That's pretty obvious.

  121. And in doing so, Luke is showing

  122. that not just Paul,

  123. but the church itself is innocent

  124. of any accusations that are being thrown against it

  125. as being perhaps bad for the state

  126. or bad for society.

  127. But you know, more than that,

  128. we need to remember that Luke is writing

  129. his two-volume work,

  130. what we call the Gospel of Luke

  131. and the Acts of the Apostles.

  132. He's writing this two-volume work

  133. to his young friend, Theophilus.

  134. And he's writing so that Theophilus

  135. and other Christians like him

  136. might have certainty concerning the things

  137. they've been taught.

  138. That's what Luke says in the beginning

  139. of this whole work of the chapter 1.

  140. In other words,

  141. this is a work of discipleship.

  142. That is what he's writing.

  143. And so there are important things

  144. that we're meant to see in these chapters

  145. so that our grasp of the faith

  146. might grow deeper and more secure.

  147. And I think one of the things

  148. that we see dealt with here

  149. in chapter 25 along these lines

  150. is the issue of injustice.

  151. After all, is it the injustice

  152. of the world

  153. and the injustice that we sometimes

  154. face in our own lives

  155. one of the things

  156. that can shake our faith?

  157. When things aren't right,

  158. we can often wonder

  159. whether there's any substance

  160. to what we believe.

  161. So let's take a look

  162. at how this theme unfolds

  163. in chapter 25

  164. so that we might

  165. grow in our certainty

  166. concerning the things

  167. we're being taught.

  168. And I think as we open up

  169. this chapter,

  170. the first thing that we see

  171. is this.

  172. Don't let injustice

  173. shake your faith.

  174. Don't let injustice

  175. shake your faith.

  176. But chapter 25 opens.

  177. Did you catch that?

  178. Paul has been in prison

  179. for two years.

  180. And for no other reason

  181. than the fact that Felix

  182. was waiting for a bribe.

  183. Paul is the evicta

  184. of injustice.

  185. There's no real case

  186. against him

  187. if you can follow it along.

  188. The authorities of Jerusalem

  189. are trying to condemn him

  190. for flouting the law,

  191. defiling the temple,

  192. causing civil unrest,

  193. but they can't prove

  194. any of these charges.

  195. They don't have a single witness

  196. to bring before Felix

  197. or Festus here in 25.

  198. And Felix knows

  199. that none of these charges

  200. are true back in 24,

  201. but he leaves Paul

  202. in prison anyway,

  203. hoping to get some money

  204. out of all of his friends.

  205. And that goes on

  206. for two years,

  207. and Felix finally

  208. is replaced by Festus.

  209. You know, historically,

  210. we know that Festus

  211. wasn't very much liked

  212. by the Jews,

  213. so they ended up

  214. petitioning Rome

  215. to have him removed.

  216. They sent a delegation

  217. to the capital,

  218. made their case,

  219. and Felix was fired,

  220. so Festus gets the job.

  221. Not exactly the kind of shoes

  222. you want to be following him.

  223. And as soon as Festus

  224. arrives around 59 AD,

  225. the authorities in Jerusalem

  226. were making their move

  227. against Paul once more,

  228. again plotting

  229. to kill him in an ambush,

  230. just like they tried

  231. back in chapter 23.

  232. Of course, again,

  233. there's a deep irony here,

  234. isn't there,

  235. that the ones who are

  236. so zealous for the purity

  237. of the law

  238. are actually more than willing

  239. to break the law

  240. in order to get rid of Paul.

  241. They're happy for the ends

  242. to justify the means.

  243. And isn't that so often

  244. the reality of the unjust world

  245. that we live in?

  246. But you know, at first,

  247. Festus seems like a breath

  248. of fresh air, doesn't he?

  249. He refuses their request

  250. to have Paul transferred

  251. to Jerusalem,

  252. and as soon as he gets back

  253. to Caesarea,

  254. he opens Paul's case

  255. and brings him in

  256. for the hearing.

  257. It seems that with Festus,

  258. someone is finally

  259. going to do the right thing

  260. for Paul.

  261. But how quickly

  262. things change.

  263. In verse 9,

  264. Festus wares.

  265. He sees an opportunity

  266. to do the Jews' effect

  267. for him.

  268. He tries to send Paul

  269. back to Jerusalem.

  270. And it seems like the doors

  271. of injustice are again

  272. closing in around Paul.

  273. Two years he's been waiting

  274. for his just acquittal,

  275. and now we think

  276. from back to the Romans.

  277. The world is an unjust place.

  278. Of course, we know that.

  279. You know,

  280. read a newspaper,

  281. watch the news,

  282. live your life,

  283. and you see injustice

  284. all the time.

  285. And yet, isn't Luke

  286. taking all those

  287. special pains here

  288. to show us how Paul

  289. is personally

  290. undergoing injustice

  291. in these chapters?

  292. It's almost as if

  293. to tell us

  294. that we shouldn't be

  295. shocked or surprised

  296. if the same thing

  297. happens to us.

  298. The world's an unjust place,

  299. Theophilus.

  300. Don't be spiritually rocked

  301. or emotionally devastated

  302. or paralyzed to respond

  303. if some of that injustice

  304. hits you personally.

  305. In fact, you can expect it

  306. at some point or another.

  307. Christians live in the world.

  308. And if the world's an unjust place,

  309. then it's something

  310. we don't experience injustice.

  311. And maybe all this seems obvious.

  312. And it is.

  313. But I wonder, friend,

  314. have you ever questioned

  315. your belief in Christ

  316. when you've seen injustice

  317. in the world

  318. or experienced it

  319. in your own life?

  320. Has it ever rocked

  321. your certainty

  322. leaving a strain of doubt

  323. rippling in its wake?

  324. Well, Luke here

  325. is trying to give us

  326. a more robust

  327. and realistic picture

  328. of discipleship

  329. and what it means

  330. to really follow Jesus.

  331. Creation groans

  332. under the weight

  333. of injustice

  334. and believers

  335. will often join

  336. in that group.

  337. Now, is that a cause

  338. to abandon belief in God?

  339. Certainly not.

  340. After all,

  341. the very cry

  342. of your heart

  343. for things to be made right,

  344. the very cry

  345. of your heart

  346. for justice,

  347. your very deep sense

  348. that things are not

  349. the way they're supposed to be,

  350. all of that inner groaning

  351. is a sign

  352. that you're made

  353. in the image

  354. of the living God.

  355. All of that

  356. is a sign

  357. that you're more

  358. than just

  359. a different matter

  360. and time

  361. and chance.

  362. all that's a sign

  363. to God's reality.

  364. After all,

  365. if life were just atoms

  366. colliding into atoms,

  367. what sense would we have

  368. that things should

  369. be different after all?

  370. The strong would eat

  371. the weak

  372. and that's not

  373. things would just be.

  374. We might not like it,

  375. but we couldn't say

  376. it's unjust.

  377. We couldn't say

  378. it's not right.

  379. But friends,

  380. don't you see

  381. that injustice

  382. awaits in us?

  383. a deep echo

  384. of something

  385. that many of us

  386. have almost forgotten.

  387. We see the injustice

  388. of the world

  389. and our heart

  390. cries out for something

  391. to be made right.

  392. It's a deep echo

  393. of something

  394. that we've almost forgotten.

  395. That this world

  396. is God's.

  397. And God is a God

  398. of peace

  399. and justice.

  400. And as humans

  401. made in His image,

  402. we want the world

  403. to be put right

  404. with anger.

  405. Like watchmen

  406. long for the morning

  407. of the Psalms

  408. that said.

  409. Like watchmen

  410. long for the morning

  411. we long for God's

  412. kingdom to come

  413. in place.

  414. So Luke's reminding us

  415. that the world

  416. is an unjust place.

  417. Not a reason

  418. to abandon faith in God

  419. but a reminder

  420. that we will often

  421. grow under its weight

  422. so don't let

  423. injustice surprise

  424. and appreciate your faith.

  425. The second point

  426. we see here

  427. is this

  428. that in this

  429. unjust world

  430. we are to pursue

  431. justice

  432. with integrity.

  433. Notice how Paul

  434. in verse 8

  435. responds to the charges.

  436. It's quite simple

  437. and straightforward

  438. isn't it?

  439. Neither against

  440. the law of the Jews

  441. nor against the temple

  442. nor against Caesar

  443. have I committed

  444. any offense.

  445. be calmly

  446. clearly

  447. and with integrity

  448. declares what's right

  449. and what's true.

  450. You know this is not

  451. the fourth time

  452. as we've said

  453. that he's had to

  454. defend himself.

  455. This is the second time

  456. he's done it

  457. before this very

  458. same tribunal

  459. in Caesarea

  460. but isn't it amazing

  461. that again

  462. with the same

  463. sort of

  464. composure

  465. and integrity

  466. he lays out

  467. his case.

  468. And notice

  469. he's not just

  470. out to sort of

  471. win an argument

  472. and to save his skin.

  473. Look at verse 11.

  474. I mean it's not

  475. if I'm a wrongdoer

  476. if I've done

  477. something that

  478. deserves death

  479. then I'm willing

  480. to accept that sentence.

  481. He's perfectly

  482. willing to be

  483. justly tried

  484. in sentence.

  485. He cares about

  486. justice.

  487. Paul cares about

  488. what's right

  489. but

  490. he's also

  491. willing to pursue

  492. what's right

  493. through the means

  494. available.

  495. And so he

  496. appeals to Caesar.

  497. Seeing that

  498. Thessalonians

  499. is not going

  500. to judge

  501. his case

  502. with integrity

  503. he uses

  504. the means

  505. available to him

  506. as a running

  507. citizen

  508. to try

  509. to get a fair

  510. shame

  511. to try

  512. to get a fair

  513. trial.

  514. Send him to

  515. Caesar

  516. he says

  517. send him

  518. to him.

  519. And notice

  520. what Paul

  521. isn't doing

  522. here

  523. as he appeals

  524. to Caesar

  525. on the one

  526. hand

  527. he's not

  528. simply

  529. resigning

  530. himself

  531. to the

  532. injustice

  533. around him.

  534. That could

  535. have been

  536. easy to do

  537. he could

  538. have said

  539. this must

  540. just be

  541. my fate

  542. and given

  543. up

  544. and gone

  545. to Jerusalem.

  546. And on the

  547. other hand

  548. Paul wasn't

  549. kicking and

  550. screaming and

  551. raging

  552. demanding his

  553. rights

  554. he wasn't

  555. disrespecting

  556. all the

  557. authorities

  558. around him

  559. Jewish

  560. or Roman

  561. he wasn't

  562. seeking

  563. any way

  564. possible

  565. to get

  566. out from

  567. under

  568. this

  569. kangaroo

  570. court

  571. I mean

  572. after all

  573. why not

  574. escape for

  575. jail

  576. if you're

  577. being

  578. adjusted

  579. to help

  580. or not

  581. break out

  582. why not

  583. escape

  584. at night

  585. why not

  586. pay the

  587. bribe

  588. if you're

  589. there

  590. under

  591. false

  592. accusations

  593. don't the

  594. ends

  595. justify

  596. the

  597. means

  598. hasn't

  599. all sense

  600. of justice

  601. utterly

  602. collapsed

  603. in this

  604. bond

  605. group

  606. of law

  607. but no

  608. Paul wasn't

  609. falling off

  610. either side

  611. of it

  612. he wasn't

  613. getting up

  614. and he

  615. wasn't

  616. angerfully

  617. using any

  618. means

  619. possible

  620. instead he

  621. was pursuing

  622. justice

  623. with integrity

  624. now most

  625. of us tend

  626. to tip

  627. one way

  628. or the

  629. other

  630. don't we

  631. some of

  632. us avoid

  633. conflict

  634. like the

  635. plague

  636. I confess

  637. I often

  638. fall into

  639. that category

  640. we passively

  641. accept our

  642. faith

  643. never speaking

  644. up

  645. never standing

  646. up

  647. maybe we

  648. even kind

  649. of dress

  650. it up

  651. in theological

  652. language

  653. this must

  654. be the

  655. Lord's

  656. will

  657. we say

  658. but that's

  659. not the

  660. example

  661. we see

  662. here

  663. is it

  664. Paul

  665. believes

  666. in God's

  667. sovereignty

  668. oh yes

  669. but he

  670. still

  671. acts

  672. and pursues

  673. what's

  674. right

  675. but if

  676. some of

  677. us avoid

  678. conflict

  679. some of

  680. us

  681. are

  682. fighters

  683. and we'll

  684. do whatever

  685. it takes

  686. to stand

  687. up for

  688. what we

  689. think are

  690. our

  691. rights

  692. even if

  693. it means

  694. playing the

  695. game

  696. and bending

  697. the truth

  698. and fighting

  699. fire

  700. fire

  701. and yet

  702. the example

  703. of Paul

  704. here shows

  705. us a

  706. calmness

  707. confidence

  708. a courage

  709. to pursue

  710. justice

  711. with integrity

  712. but you

  713. know this

  714. way that

  715. Luke is

  716. sort of

  717. showing us

  718. in the

  719. apostle

  720. Paul

  721. pursuing

  722. justice

  723. doing the

  724. right thing

  725. doing it

  726. with integrity

  727. it's hard

  728. isn't it

  729. I don't

  730. know about

  731. you but

  732. I often

  733. feel more

  734. like Festus

  735. in this

  736. story

  737. than Paul

  738. Festus

  739. starts out

  740. with really

  741. good intentions

  742. not willing

  743. to be swayed

  744. but when

  745. the pressure

  746. comes

  747. when faced

  748. with a hard

  749. but clear

  750. decision to

  751. do the

  752. right thing

  753. when the

  754. pressure

  755. comes

  756. he caves

  757. look again

  758. at verse

  759. 9

  760. he knows

  761. the case

  762. against Paul

  763. is not

  764. a leg

  765. to stand

  766. on

  767. and yet

  768. he also

  769. sees that

  770. it would

  771. be

  772. advantageous

  773. to keep

  774. the Jerusalem

  775. of the

  776. four days

  777. happy

  778. why not

  779. do them

  780. a favor

  781. and get

  782. started

  783. on the

  784. right foot

  785. he thinks

  786. have they

  787. made life

  788. hard

  789. for his

  790. predecessor

  791. Felix

  792. have they

  793. got him

  794. fired

  795. why not

  796. do their

  797. good side

  798. Felix

  799. knows

  800. the

  801. right

  802. thing

  803. and he

  804. waves

  805. instead of

  806. pursuing

  807. justice

  808. with

  809. integrity

  810. he gives

  811. in

  812. the

  813. pressure

  814. and fear

  815. haven't you

  816. been there

  817. I know

  818. I have

  819. enough

  820. and look

  821. at the

  822. trouble

  823. it creates

  824. Festus

  825. drives

  826. his

  827. end

  828. all back

  829. to Jerusalem

  830. tries to

  831. win some

  832. favor

  833. with the

  834. local

  835. authorities

  836. and Paul

  837. appeals to

  838. Caesar

  839. and suddenly

  840. Festus

  841. is in

  842. trouble

  843. because

  844. as part

  845. of this

  846. appeal

  847. Festus

  848. has to

  849. send a

  850. report

  851. to the

  852. capital

  853. as to

  854. why

  855. this

  856. case

  857. is

  858. coming

  859. to the

  860. emperor

  861. and what's

  862. Festus

  863. going to

  864. say

  865. ah

  866. well

  867. I wanted

  868. to do

  869. the Jewish

  870. council

  871. a bit

  872. of a

  873. favor

  874. because

  875. you know

  876. you know

  877. how difficult

  878. they can

  879. be

  880. and Paul

  881. wouldn't

  882. go along

  883. with it

  884. so he

  885. killed

  886. to you

  887. so well

  888. here he

  889. is

  890. your problem

  891. now

  892. not exactly

  893. like I've had a

  894. legal breach

  895. that's going to

  896. make Festus

  897. a little

  898. problem

  899. clearly that's

  900. not going to

  901. work

  902. so Festus

  903. starts covering

  904. these tracks

  905. almost immediately

  906. look at verse

  907. 20

  908. he says

  909. well I was at a

  910. loss

  911. I'm investigating

  912. these things

  913. that's why

  914. I wanted

  915. to send

  916. Paul back

  917. to the

  918. first

  919. really

  920. Festus

  921. we know

  922. that was

  923. the real

  924. reason

  925. we wanted

  926. to do

  927. the Jews

  928. a favor

  929. friends

  930. haven't you

  931. been there

  932. you cave

  933. under pressure

  934. you don't

  935. do the right

  936. thing

  937. and suddenly

  938. the consequences

  939. start unfolding

  940. and you have

  941. to start

  942. weaving the story

  943. and backtracking

  944. and covering up

  945. and Festus

  946. is in a bigger

  947. pickle now

  948. than he was

  949. at Paul's

  950. hearing

  951. he was afraid

  952. of touching

  953. the anger

  954. of the authorities

  955. of Jerusalem

  956. now he's

  957. about to face

  958. the wrath

  959. of Rome

  960. itself

  961. unless he

  962. didn't come

  963. up with

  964. a story

  965. now what

  966. made these

  967. men so

  968. different

  969. Paul

  970. and Festus

  971. what gave

  972. Paul such

  973. courage

  974. while Festus

  975. caved

  976. it wasn't

  977. wealth

  978. that's not

  979. what Paul

  980. had

  981. going for

  982. Festus

  983. was

  984. aristocrat

  985. Paul

  986. was a

  987. poor

  988. tent

  989. baby

  990. missionary

  991. was it

  992. status

  993. or power

  994. that gave

  995. Paul the

  996. upper hand

  997. Festus

  998. was a

  999. Roman

  1000. leader

  1001. one of the

  1002. highest

  1003. seeds of

  1004. the empire

  1005. Paul was a

  1006. traveling

  1007. rapper

  1008. what was it

  1009. what made

  1010. Paul

  1011. able to

  1012. pursue

  1013. justice

  1014. with integrity

  1015. while Festus

  1016. wavered

  1017. and caved

  1018. out

  1019. fear

  1020. and

  1021. is this

  1022. a problem

  1023. that in an

  1024. unjust world

  1025. where more like

  1026. Festus

  1027. and Paul

  1028. you and I

  1029. are good

  1030. intentions

  1031. often give

  1032. way

  1033. under pressure

  1034. and very

  1035. little seems

  1036. to have

  1037. there is

  1038. a

  1039. there is

  1040. one last

  1041. point

  1042. that Luke

  1043. wants us

  1044. to see

  1045. and the

  1046. last point

  1047. here in

  1048. chapter 25

  1049. is this

  1050. that in

  1051. this unjust

  1052. world

  1053. God

  1054. is

  1055. accomplished

  1056. his just

  1057. purpose

  1058. and plan

  1059. that's the

  1060. difference

  1061. between Paul

  1062. and Festus

  1063. one had

  1064. come to

  1065. see this

  1066. truth

  1067. with blazing

  1068. clarity

  1069. and the

  1070. other had

  1071. thought

  1072. Festus was

  1073. probably a

  1074. good Roman

  1075. and as a

  1076. good Roman

  1077. you appeased

  1078. the gods

  1079. and you did

  1080. your best

  1081. Roman civic

  1082. life was

  1083. very pragmatic

  1084. ah but the

  1085. God of the

  1086. Bible

  1087. was a

  1088. different

  1089. sort of

  1090. God

  1091. altogether

  1092. the God

  1093. that called

  1094. him

  1095. was the

  1096. sovereign

  1097. creator

  1098. of all

  1099. things

  1100. who was

  1101. able to

  1102. use

  1103. even

  1104. injustice

  1105. to bring

  1106. about

  1107. his

  1108. purposes

  1109. think of

  1110. God's

  1111. history

  1112. with his

  1113. people

  1114. when Joseph

  1115. was sold

  1116. by his

  1117. brothers

  1118. into slavery

  1119. God was

  1120. there

  1121. to put

  1122. Joseph in

  1123. Egypt

  1124. and then

  1125. into power

  1126. and the

  1127. rest of

  1128. his team

  1129. when Daniel

  1130. was sent

  1131. into exile

  1132. by the

  1133. Babylonians

  1134. and he

  1135. was thrown

  1136. into a

  1137. lion's

  1138. den

  1139. there

  1140. God

  1141. was

  1142. working

  1143. to

  1144. exalt

  1145. Daniel

  1146. put him

  1147. in a

  1148. position

  1149. of

  1150. authority

  1151. and

  1152. broadcast

  1153. throughout

  1154. the

  1155. Persian

  1156. empire

  1157. as a result

  1158. of that

  1159. event

  1160. the greatness

  1161. of Daniel's

  1162. God

  1163. God

  1164. for think of

  1165. when Esther

  1166. was taken

  1167. from her

  1168. family

  1169. and put

  1170. into the

  1171. king's

  1172. herald

  1173. even there

  1174. God was

  1175. worthy

  1176. to make

  1177. her the

  1178. queen

  1179. so that

  1180. at the

  1181. right time

  1182. she could

  1183. advocate

  1184. for her

  1185. people

  1186. and save

  1187. them

  1188. from

  1189. destruction

  1190. this was

  1191. the God

  1192. that Paul

  1193. had

  1194. this is

  1195. the God

  1196. that Paul

  1197. had now

  1198. come

  1199. to know

  1200. in a new

  1201. way

  1202. you see

  1203. now Paul

  1204. had come

  1205. to know

  1206. what all

  1207. this history

  1208. was pointing

  1209. toward

  1210. now he

  1211. knew about

  1212. the one

  1213. who brought

  1214. Israel's

  1215. history to

  1216. its surprising

  1217. finale

  1218. now Paul

  1219. knew Jesus

  1220. God's

  1221. very son

  1222. and Jesus

  1223. who was

  1224. innocent

  1225. in every

  1226. way

  1227. was betrayed

  1228. and was

  1229. unjustly

  1230. condemned

  1231. by his

  1232. own people

  1233. and was

  1234. crucified

  1235. in a

  1236. miscarried

  1237. pro-injustice

  1238. class

  1239. in and

  1240. through that

  1241. most severe

  1242. and blatant

  1243. act of

  1244. injustice

  1245. God

  1246. was working

  1247. his just

  1248. delay

  1249. and at

  1250. the cross

  1251. God was

  1252. carried

  1253. away

  1254. our sin

  1255. and our

  1256. death

  1257. and death

  1258. Christ

  1259. and God

  1260. demonstrated

  1261. that fact

  1262. by raising

  1263. Jesus from

  1264. the dead

  1265. overturning

  1266. the just

  1267. unjust

  1268. verdict

  1269. that had

  1270. been cast

  1271. and in

  1272. overturning

  1273. that verdict

  1274. breaking

  1275. righteousness

  1276. and life

  1277. and vindication

  1278. to all

  1279. the world

  1280. you see

  1281. this God

  1282. that Paul

  1283. knew was

  1284. the God

  1285. who worked

  1286. out his

  1287. just purpose

  1288. in an

  1289. unjust

  1290. world

  1291. and now

  1292. Paul had

  1293. to know

  1294. this God

  1295. or better

  1296. put to be

  1297. known

  1298. by this

  1299. God

  1300. in Jesus

  1301. the crucified

  1302. and risen

  1303. world

  1304. in verse

  1305. 19

  1306. Festus

  1307. recounts

  1308. a little

  1309. more of

  1310. what Paul

  1311. had said

  1312. in his

  1313. defense

  1314. Festus

  1315. is a bit

  1316. confused

  1317. he says

  1318. it seemed

  1319. to be all

  1320. of us

  1321. serving

  1322. Jesus

  1323. who was

  1324. dead

  1325. but

  1326. he

  1327. called

  1328. out

  1329. to be

  1330. alive

  1331. why was

  1332. calling

  1333. to pursue

  1334. justice

  1335. with

  1336. integrity

  1337. and not

  1338. give

  1339. into

  1340. pressure

  1341. or fear

  1342. and what

  1343. will allow

  1344. us to

  1345. do the same

  1346. because in the

  1347. light of the

  1348. resurrection of

  1349. Jesus our

  1350. living king

  1351. we can know

  1352. that no matter

  1353. what happens

  1354. God

  1355. is at work

  1356. to bring

  1357. about his

  1358. just kingdom

  1359. even through

  1360. injustice

  1361. and that means

  1362. that the rulers

  1363. of the nations

  1364. are not beyond

  1365. the control

  1366. of the Lord

  1367. of the universe

  1368. you know as

  1369. Paul was in

  1370. prison in

  1371. Caesarea

  1372. I wonder how

  1373. often he

  1374. remembered

  1375. the words of

  1376. Jesus that

  1377. Ananias told

  1378. him right after

  1379. his conversion

  1380. Jesus said to

  1381. him Paul

  1382. you're a chosen

  1383. instrument of

  1384. mine to

  1385. carry my name

  1386. before Gentiles

  1387. and kings

  1388. and the children

  1389. of Israel

  1390. and I will

  1391. show you how

  1392. much he has

  1393. suffered

  1394. a saving

  1395. right here

  1396. you see

  1397. Paul's suffering

  1398. wasn't in vain

  1399. it was for

  1400. Jesus sake

  1401. he was testifying

  1402. to kings

  1403. our passage ends

  1404. with Agrippa

  1405. the Jewish king

  1406. at the time

  1407. wanting to hear

  1408. Paul

  1409. wanting to listen

  1410. to what he has

  1411. to say

  1412. and hear the

  1413. words of Jesus

  1414. coming true

  1415. testifying to

  1416. kings

  1417. and again

  1418. I wonder how

  1419. often the words

  1420. that Jesus spoke

  1421. to Paul

  1422. in prison

  1423. in Jerusalem

  1424. just two years

  1425. earlier

  1426. was comforting

  1427. to Paul

  1428. during those

  1429. years in

  1430. Caesar

  1431. take courage

  1432. Jesus

  1433. for as you

  1434. have testified

  1435. to the facts

  1436. about me

  1437. in Jerusalem

  1438. so you

  1439. must also

  1440. testify

  1441. in Rome

  1442. you must

  1443. testify

  1444. in Rome

  1445. no matter

  1446. what happened

  1447. Paul knew

  1448. that the

  1449. Lord was in

  1450. control

  1451. and that no

  1452. matter what

  1453. happened

  1454. he was going

  1455. to testify

  1456. to the grace

  1457. of God

  1458. in Christ

  1459. see if you

  1460. and Paul

  1461. appeals to

  1462. Caesar

  1463. in our

  1464. chapter

  1465. here

  1466. it's more

  1467. than just

  1468. a last

  1469. ditch

  1470. effort

  1471. to try

  1472. to save

  1473. his skin

  1474. it was

  1475. Paul

  1476. realizing

  1477. that the

  1478. words

  1479. of Jesus

  1480. were coming

  1481. true

  1482. this probably

  1483. wasn't how

  1484. Paul originally

  1485. thought he was

  1486. going to get

  1487. there

  1488. he probably

  1489. wasn't thinking

  1490. that his

  1491. trip to Rome

  1492. would be in

  1493. chains

  1494. but what Luke

  1495. has been trying

  1496. to show us

  1497. through this

  1498. whole section

  1499. of Acts

  1500. is that

  1501. Paul's chains

  1502. are the

  1503. gospel's wings

  1504. and the

  1505. injustice

  1506. that he suffered

  1507. only served

  1508. to advance

  1509. the gospel

  1510. and that gave

  1511. Paul great

  1512. reason

  1513. not only

  1514. to worship

  1515. Jesus as

  1516. the Lord of

  1517. Lords

  1518. but it gave

  1519. him incredible

  1520. courage

  1521. not to cave

  1522. but to waver

  1523. in the face

  1524. of injustice

  1525. the Lord

  1526. is my helper

  1527. Psalm 118

  1528. 6 says

  1529. what can

  1530. man do to

  1531. me

  1532. who

  1533. shall I

  1534. fear

  1535. friends

  1536. if Christ

  1537. died

  1538. and rose

  1539. again

  1540. for me

  1541. for you

  1542. if his

  1543. resurrection

  1544. proves that

  1545. he's going

  1546. to work

  1547. out his

  1548. just life

  1549. even through

  1550. injustice

  1551. what if

  1552. we

  1553. do

  1554. you know

  1555. if that

  1556. truth goes

  1557. deep for

  1558. us

  1559. just like

  1560. it did

  1561. for Paul

  1562. and we'll

  1563. find that

  1564. in the face

  1565. of injustice

  1566. we don't

  1567. need to

  1568. avoid

  1569. conflict

  1570. and give

  1571. in to

  1572. passivity

  1573. we'll find

  1574. that the gospel

  1575. actually gives us

  1576. the confidence

  1577. to appeal

  1578. as a

  1579. God

  1580. like Paul

  1581. because we

  1582. know that we

  1583. stand with

  1584. the king

  1585. and the guy

  1586. that was a

  1587. king

  1588. and his

  1589. just plan

  1590. cannot be

  1591. overthrown

  1592. isn't that

  1593. the confidence

  1594. that we

  1595. need

  1596. and at the

  1597. same time

  1598. we need not

  1599. fight fire

  1600. with fire

  1601. and use

  1602. unjust means

  1603. to fight

  1604. injustice

  1605. the gospel

  1606. gives us

  1607. the courage

  1608. to suffer

  1609. for the one

  1610. who died

  1611. and rose

  1612. again

  1613. stands

  1614. with us

  1615. and his

  1616. kingdom

  1617. will advance

  1618. even

  1619. through

  1620. suffering

  1621. there's the

  1622. courage

  1623. that we

  1624. need

  1625. and here's

  1626. why we can

  1627. do the right

  1628. thing even

  1629. under pressure

  1630. even when

  1631. it's hard

  1632. because no

  1633. matter what

  1634. trouble may

  1635. come as a

  1636. result

  1637. the risen

  1638. Lord's

  1639. working through

  1640. to advance

  1641. his kingdom

  1642. in our lives

  1643. and the world

  1644. his kingdom

  1645. of grace

  1646. and of peace

  1647. and of the

  1648. justice

  1649. our hearts

  1650. are so warm

  1651. Lord Jesus

  1652. we thank you

  1653. that in your

  1654. resurrection

  1655. there is

  1656. great courage

  1657. and great

  1658. confidence

  1659. for us

  1660. Lord we

  1661. confess this

  1662. morning that

  1663. we're often so

  1664. fearful

  1665. and so weak

  1666. God that so

  1667. many of our

  1668. response

  1669. fall so harsh

  1670. and yet

  1671. Father we

  1672. thank you for

  1673. your Holy

  1674. Spirit

  1675. that you

  1676. poured out

  1677. in the

  1678. house

  1679. through

  1680. Jesus

  1681. that helps

  1682. us to see

  1683. and to know

  1684. that your

  1685. kingdom is

  1686. going for

  1687. and that

  1688. nothing

  1689. is wrong

  1690. God grant us

  1691. the courage

  1692. that we need

  1693. and the confidence

  1694. that we need

  1695. in you

  1696. Lord Jesus

  1697. so that we

  1698. might be people

  1699. of justice

  1700. so that we

  1701. might be people

  1702. of righteousness

  1703. and truth

  1704. of mercy

  1705. and compassion

  1706. so that we

  1707. might bind

  1708. out of the

  1709. hearts of the

  1710. broken

  1711. so that we

  1712. might go to

  1713. the needy

  1714. and believe

  1715. you to stand

  1716. with them

  1717. so that we

  1718. might be able

  1719. to face

  1720. hope

  1721. with calmness

  1722. and composure

  1723. and grace

  1724. Lord knowing

  1725. that the very

  1726. people who

  1727. often sit in

  1728. the seat of

  1729. judgment are

  1730. really just

  1731. like us

  1732. or may

  1733. this be

  1734. the long

  1735. end of the

  1736. life of

  1737. my

  1738. everything

  1739. I pray

  1740. this in

  1741. Jesus

  1742. friends let's

  1743. stand

  1744. as the

  1745. music scene

  1746. comes out

  1747. and let's

  1748. use this

  1749. closing song

  1750. as an

  1751. opportunity

  1752. to respond

  1753. and worship

  1754. to Christ

  1755. our King

  1756. and let's

  1757. return

  1758. and proclaim

  1759. thank you

  1760. Alleluia, sing to Jesus

  1761. Here's the scepter, here's the throne

  1762. Alleluia, here's the china

1763. Here's the victory in me alone

1764. I will come to thee to Zion

  1765. Under thy almighty fire

  1766. Jesus, our every nation

1767. That's redeeming us by his love

1768. Alleluia, God and so on

1769. Are we glad in sorrow now?

  1770. Alleluia, keep his spirit

  1771. Faithfully, the blessed sound

1772. All the doubts of sight receding

1773. When the Lord is the Lord

1774. Shout out our hearts, forget his confidence

1775. I am with you evermore

  1776. Alleluia, let our better

1777. Through all earth, our fruit are saved

  1778. Alleluia, keep the simple

1779. Will flee to you from day to day

  1780. Intercessor, friend of sinners

1781. First redeeming early on me

1782. Where the Santa, Father, the Lord

1783. We are the best of sin

  1784. Alleluia, keep the simple

  1785. You, the Lord

1786. You, the Lord, the Lord

1787. We are the best of sin

  1788. Alleluia, Lord, O Mary

1789. Heard your force to heaven

  1790. Your crown

1791. You, with the end of the world

  1792. As an angel

  1793. And broken

  1794. Broken death

  1795. I bring thy feet

  1796. I, O Spirit

  1797. Be the song

  1798. For the love

  1799. In heavenly peace

1800. Amen, friends, well, that's the end of our service

1801. Feel free to stick around

  1802. Fellowship up here

  1803. Downstairs

  1804. Don't forget

1805. The pick-up in the park

  1806. Is happening

  1807. In Worcester Square

  1808. Right there, Worcester Square

  1809. So, grab some lunch

  1810. Take it over

  1811. Have a good time

  1812. Of just fellowshipping there

1813. Don't forget to come back tonight

  1814. For our brief service

  1815. We're working our way

  1816. For the opening chapters

  1817. Of the book

  1818. Of Revelation

1819. And Greg's gonna pick up that tonight

  1820. Let me end

  1821. With a benediction

1822. From the book of the Decients

  1823. A place where we've been landing

1824. Of the most these days

1825. At the end of our service

  1826. Now to Him

1827. Who is able to do

  1828. Far more above

  1829. And all we ask

  1830. With faith

  1831. According to the power

  1832. Of work and fitness

  1833. To Him

1834. The glory of the church

  1835. And in Christ Jesus

  1836. Through all generations

  1837. Forever and ever

  1838. Amen

  1839. Friends, go on, please

  1840. quase

  1841. Thank you

  1842. An ata
