  1. Well, by God's grace, I'm here this morning.

  2. So let's ask for the Lord's help before we look at his word together.

  3. Please pray with me.

  4. God, we do thank you for your grace.

  5. We thank you for your grace that has covered all of our sins in Christ.

  6. Lord, we thank you for your grace which shows itself to us in love that has no source in

  7. ourselves that we are lovable, but Lord, comes from you and your abundant and overflowing

  8. love for us.

  9. Thank you for your grace that enables us in our weakness, in our frailty, Lord, and even

  10. in our sin, Lord.

  11. And it was us to look to you, not despair, but find hope, hope of forgiveness, hope of strength,

  12. hope of life with you.

  13. God, as we look into your word this morning, we pray that you will help us.

  14. Lord, may our hearts be ready to receive your word.

  15. May our minds be alert to listen to what you have to say to us.

  16. God, I ask for your help this morning.

  17. Lord, give me clarity of thought and of expression.

  18. Give my body strength, I pray.

  19. In Jesus' name we pray.

  20. Amen.

  21. When you walk into a situation, reception, a new neighborhood, a block party, what's the

  22. first thing that you are asked?

  23. Well, it depends on where you are and depends on the context, doesn't it?

  24. Some places you'll be asked the question, what do you do?

  25. Other places you'll be asked, oh, where are you from?

  26. Some places you'll be asked, oh, who's your father?

  27. Who's your daddy?

  28. Some places you'll be asked, what family do you come from?

  29. All of these questions are different ways of trying to get at the core question, which

  30. is, who are you?

  31. Of course, the question, the answer is complicated to that, isn't it?

  32. I may actually go to a block party this afternoon in my neighborhood, and I've been thinking

  33. about how I might answer the question, oh, hi, who are you?

  34. Well, I live at 161.

  35. I lived there for five years.

  36. I'm a pastor.

  37. I'm a father.

  38. This is Eli and Katie.

  39. I'm a guy who lives in the neighborhood.

  40. I'm a widower.

  41. I'm from Boston and Pittsburgh.

  42. I have a degree from Princeton and a degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

  43. I'm a Pirates fan and a Red Sox fan.

  44. Hope I didn't step on any toes there.

  45. And here's the thing.

  46. All of those things are true of me.

  47. All of them are, in God's sovereignty, a part of who I am.

  48. But the question of who am I has to do not just with what those things are, but how I weight

  49. them.

  50. What do I trust in to be my core identity?

  51. And, you know, when we ask those questions of other people, it's worth thinking, why do

  52. we do that?

  53. Sometimes we ask those questions.

  54. Who are you?

  55. Who are you?

  56. Where are you from?

  57. Those kinds of questions.

  58. We do it because we want to make connections.

  59. Oh, oh, yeah.

  60. Maybe we know someone in common.

  61. We make connections humanly through asking those kinds of questions.

  62. But I think that often we can also use those questions to find our place in the pecking

  63. order.

  64. We walk into the room and we think, okay, who am I a peer with?

  65. Who is my superior socially, organizationally?

  66. Who am I over in this group?

  67. We often walk in and we ask these questions because we want to figure out where do I fit

  68. in all of this?

  69. But there can also be an even uglier side to this, can't there be?

  70. It's that we look for ways to distinguish ourselves, this is who I am, as opposed to who you are,

  71. so that we find those places of difference.

  72. And in those differences, then we can find ourselves comparing ourselves.

  73. Am I better than you or am I worse than you?

  74. That allows us to become snobs and critics and to separate ourselves from one another

  75. in an attempt to build ourselves up.

  76. It's the classic elementary school bully routine, isn't it?

  77. You walk into the playground as a bully.

  78. What do you look for?

  79. The one person who's a little different from everyone else.

  80. Oh, she wears glasses.

  81. He's from a different ethnic group.

  82. Um, he's really tall.

  83. She's really short.

  84. And you beat up on him.

  85. And you make fun of him.

  86. To make yourself feel better.

  87. One might argue that this dynamic in the smaller settings of our social lives

  88. are also the ones that are writ large on the social fabric of our world

  89. that lead to things like genocide, tribal warfare.

  90. Things that, as much as we wish would go away, they don't.

  91. We long for a world of peace and unity.

  92. We long for a place where people can get along.

  93. But there are those terrible people out there who do those terrible things.

  94. Well, friends, I think it's actually a little more complicated than that, isn't it?

  95. Because that very same dynamic that may happen largely

  96. in things like the Holocaust

  97. or the refugee crisis today

  98. and our response to it,

  99. the very same thing is in our hearts

  100. and plays out in all these little social settings

  101. day in and day out.

  102. Who are we?

  103. What does the Bible have to say about this?

  104. How does the gospel of Jesus Christ impact

  105. how we understand who we are

  106. and then how does that impact

  107. how we relate to one another?

  108. And that leads us to our passage this morning.

  109. We are continuing in our series in 1 Corinthians.

  110. If you're using the Pew Bible,

  111. we're in page 952.

  112. And for those of you who have asked,

  113. we are actually setting off on a series

  114. that will preach through the whole book of 1 Corinthians.

  115. Don't be afraid that the sermon schedule

  116. only gets us through chapter 4.

  117. That's just how we'll get to before we take a break for Advent.

  118. Then we'll come back after Christmas

  119. and we'll dive on in.

  120. Bucket your seatbelts.

  121. Here we go.

  122. It's going to be a great time

  123. because this book is such a powerful book

  124. where the Lord is going to help us think about

  125. what does it mean to know Christ

  126. and to be a follower of him in this world.

  127. And as Nick preached last week,

  128. Paul has just thanked God

  129. for this church in Corinth,

  130. for the work of grace that God has done in these people

  131. and for the evidence of his gifting,

  132. his calling,

  133. and his bringing them together

  134. into a unity in Christ,

  135. under Christ.

  136. All of it is focused on Jesus Christ.

  137. If you remember,

  138. he said verses 1 through 9,

  139. name the name of Jesus Christ 11 times.

  140. It's a powerful thing.

  141. And after having given thanks,

  142. Paul then begins.

  143. He begins to address concerns.

  144. The whole structure of the book

  145. is really about Paul addressing concerns.

  146. Chapters 1 through 6

  147. are dealing with concerns that he's heard about.

  148. Chapter 7 begins the concerns

  149. that the church themselves have written

  150. to Paul asking him about

  151. or dialoguing with him about certain things.

  152. So we see the first problem

  153. that Paul addresses surface in this passage.

  154. So let's read it together.

  155. 1 Corinthians chapter 1,

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  156. starting in verse 10.

  157. I appeal to you brothers,

  158. by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  159. that all of you agree

  160. that there be no distinctions among you,

  161. but that you be united

  162. in the same mind

  163. and the same judgment.

  164. For it has been reported to me

  165. by Chloe's people

  166. that there is quarreling among you,

  167. my brothers.

  168. What I mean is that

  169. each one of you says,

  170. I follow Paul,

  171. I follow Apollos,

  172. I follow Cephas,

  173. or I follow Christ.

  174. Is Christ divided?

  175. Was Paul crucified for you?

  176. Or were you baptized

  177. in my name?

  178. I'm sorry,

  179. were you baptized

  180. in the name of Paul?

  181. I thank God

  182. I baptized none of you

  183. except Crispus and Gaius

  184. so that no one may say

  185. you were baptized in my name.

  186. I did baptize

  187. the household of Stephanas.

  188. Beyond that,

  189. I don't know

  190. whether I baptized anyone else.

  191. For Christ did not send me

  192. to baptize,

  193. but to preach the gospel,

  194. not with words

  195. of eloquent wisdom,

  196. lest the cross of Christ

  197. be emptied of its power.

  198. Friends,

  199. this is what Paul wants us

  200. to hear today,

  201. is that God

  202. has called his people,

  203. God has called us

  204. into a unity

  205. that is based

  206. on the deepest

  207. and the most profound identity

  208. we can have,

  209. that of being in Christ.

  210. Paul is going to say

  211. that unity flows

  212. from a proper identity.

  213. And as we work

  214. through the passage,

  215. we're going to see

  216. Paul sort of presents

  217. the problem,

  218. and then he attacks,

  219. or then he puts forth

  220. a solution.

  221. He says,

  222. this is the problem,

  223. that's what we'll talk

  224. about first,

  225. and then this is the solution,

  226. this is how we respond

  227. to it in a proper way.

  228. So first,

  229. what is the problem?

  230. Really,

  231. it's in verses 10 through 12.

  232. Starts out by saying,

  233. there are divisions

  234. among you.

  235. Right?

  236. And these divisions

  237. seem to be related

  238. to a number of things,

  239. don't they?

  240. These divisions are related

  241. to personalities.

  242. Paul,

  243. Apollos,

  244. who was a follower

  245. of Paul's,

  246. a relative,

  247. who had probably

  248. ministered in Corinth

  249. at one point,

  250. silver-tongued Apollos.

  251. He's probably a great speaker.

  252. I follow Paul.

  253. Well,

  254. Paul is the original apostle

  255. to the Gentiles.

  256. I follow Cephas,

  257. which is the Aramaic name

  258. for Peter.

  259. Well,

  260. he was with Jesus.

  261. I want to be on his team.

  262. I follow Christ.

  263. Well,

  264. you guys follow human leaders.

  265. Look at me.

  266. I know that that's silly.

  267. I'm on the Christ team.

  268. And in doing this,

  269. they've separated themselves

  270. from one another.

  271. They've said,

  272. I'm better than you are

  273. by my identification

  274. with this person.

  275. It also seems to be

  276. connected to baptism.

  277. Well,

  278. I was baptized by John Stott.

  279. Well,

  280. I was baptized by Billy Graham.

  281. Well,

  282. I was baptized by the Pope.

  283. Well,

  284. I was baptized by Jesus himself.

  285. You know?

  286. And somehow,

  287. they latched on to baptism

  288. as one of these identifiers.

  289. It also seems

  290. that it was probably

  291. connected to gifting

  292. and speaking.

  293. We see that at the end

  294. and we'll see it much more

  295. as we go on

  296. in the next couple of chapters.

  297. That eloquence

  298. and being able to speak publicly

  299. in the frame

  300. of the Corinthian context

  301. with sophistry

  302. and rhetoric

  303. and filling the pattern

  304. of expected rhetoric

  305. so that you can impress

  306. impress your hearers.

  307. So for all these reasons,

  308. the church in Corinth

  309. was divided.

  310. They were divided

  311. like a piece of fabric

  312. that is meant to be whole

  313. that had been torn up

  314. into pieces.

  315. Notice how strong

  316. this identification

  317. with the leaders is.

  318. It's not just

  319. I like this guy

  320. better than this guy

  321. or I've been blessed

  322. by this guy

  323. and not that guy.

  324. It's not nearly

  325. that shallow.

  326. It's much more profound.

  327. Look at it again.

  328. It's in verse what?

  329. Verse 12, right?

  330. I follow Paul.

  331. I follow Paul.

  332. This is how the ESV

  333. translates it.

  334. You know how it is

  335. in the original?

  336. It actually just says

  337. I am of Paul.

  338. Look back to verse 2

  339. for a second.

  340. Who does the church

  341. really belong to?

  342. To the church

  343. of God.

  344. But these men and women

  345. in Corinth

  346. have lost sight of that.

  347. Haven't they?

  348. And they've divided themselves.

  349. And it seems like

  350. in identifying

  351. with these human leaders

  352. they're trying

  353. to ride their coattails

  354. to success.

  355. In the competitive context

  356. of the Corinthian world

  357. they're thinking

  358. how do I get ahead?

  359. And they've translated it

  360. from their business practices

  361. and from their social settings

  362. into the church itself.

  363. I want to be a part

  364. of the really cool church

  365. that's really getting ahead.

  366. I don't want to be a part

  367. of that backwater church

  368. over there

  369. that isn't very exciting.

  370. I want to be

  371. I want to follow

  372. these coattails

  373. to spiritual prominence

  374. in the church

  375. and in the world.

  376. Kind of like

  377. I want to find

  378. the right startup guy

  379. to invest my money in

  380. so that I can be in

  381. on the ground floor

  382. of the next

  383. Google, Twitter, Facebook

  384. whatever it is.

  385. they're wielding

  386. their identity

  387. against one another

  388. with this desire

  389. to get ahead.

  390. And it's become

  391. not just their

  392. preferred leader

  393. but it's become

  394. their identity.

  395. I am of Paul

  396. I am of Apollos.

  397. It's also important

  398. this is a slight side note

  399. but it's important

  400. to recognize

  401. that these divisions

  402. are not doctrinal.

  403. Right?

  404. For one thing

  405. Paul and Apollos

  406. and Peter

  407. would be horrified

  408. to know that

  409. their names

  410. are being used by this.

  411. None of these men

  412. advocated for this

  413. cultivated it

  414. or would support it

  415. if they knew

  416. that it was happening.

  417. But secondly

  418. recognize that

  419. this is not

  420. a Galatians situation.

  421. Paul clearly says

  422. there are times

  423. when the gospel

  424. is at stake

  425. the truth

  426. and the clarity

  427. of the gospel

  428. is at stake

  429. and divisions

  430. are important

  431. and to say

  432. that man

  433. is a false teacher

  434. that person

  435. is a false teacher

  436. because they are

  437. distorting the gospel

  438. is an important thing

  439. in the life

  440. of our church.

  441. And yet

  442. friends

  443. how often

  444. and maybe

  445. how often

  446. especially for us

  447. in the Protestant tradition

  448. have we allowed

  449. personality splits

  450. and secondary things

  451. like

  452. what version

  453. of the Bible

  454. do we follow

  455. or

  456. what color

  457. is the carpet

  458. or what kind

  459. of music

  460. do we play.

  461. There are so many ways

  462. that we then

  463. blow little

  464. secondary things up

  465. into

  466. primary and central

  467. things about the gospel

  468. and then divide

  469. over them

  470. in ways

  471. that are unhealthy.

  472. That's what

  473. these men did.

  474. They said

  475. the church here

  476. said

  477. here are men

  478. who I've been blessed

  479. by their ministry

  480. and then they've been

  481. inflated

  482. to a place of prominence

  483. in their identity

  484. and their understanding

  485. of the Christian life

  486. that has completely

  487. distorted it

  488. and torn the fabric

  489. of the church apart.

  490. So we need to be careful

  491. about our motivations

  492. when we go to the place

  493. of doctrinal division

  494. even though there are times

  495. when it is appropriate

  496. and right.

  497. This is why we at Trinity

  498. talk about ourselves

  499. as a gospel centered church

  500. because we want the gospel

  501. to be in the center.

  502. Now we always have to talk

  503. about what is the gospel

  504. and what's an entailment

  505. of the gospel

  506. and what's the implications

  507. of the gospel

  508. and all of those things

  509. and those are all

  510. good conversations

  511. but we say it explicitly

  512. because we want to make

  513. the important things

  514. the important things

  515. in our church.

  516. We are Baptist

  517. but we really want to be

  518. about the gospel.

  519. That's a conviction we hold

  520. but it's not

  521. the very core

  522. of our identity

  523. let alone our positions

  524. on the end times

  525. or our denominational affiliation

  526. or our support

  527. of a political party

  528. or a candidate.

  529. we could go on

  530. and on about

  531. different ways

  532. in which churches

  533. could be known

  534. for lots of different things

  535. and Paul says

  536. don't let yourself

  537. be divided

  538. over these things.

  539. This is the problem.

  540. Now

  541. is this really a problem

  542. in our church?

  543. This is a worthwhile question

  544. to explore

  545. don't you think?

  546. Is this really

  547. I thank the Lord

  548. that this is not

  549. a major problem

  550. in our church.

  551. I don't believe

  552. as I walk in here

  553. on Friday

  554. that there are

  555. four factions

  556. that are sitting

  557. amongst you all

  558. that are somehow

  559. fighting and backbiting

  560. and challenging

  561. one another

  562. for the control

  563. or direction

  564. or prominence

  565. in our church

  566. and I am so thankful

  567. for that.

  568. But having said that

  569. let me explore it

  570. a little bit with you.

  571. A couple of reflections

  572. on this.

  573. One

  574. we have a co-pastor

  575. model in this church.

  576. If you're new to it

  577. there are three of us

  578. Greg, Nick and I

  579. who are staff elders.

  580. That means that

  581. we are full time

  582. on the staff of the church

  583. we are called pastors.

  584. There are elders

  585. that we are peers with

  586. who are not

  587. on the staff of the church

  588. that we serve with.

  589. One of the dangers

  590. one of the fears

  591. when this model

  592. was put into place

  593. four or five years ago

  594. was that our church

  595. would very easily

  596. devolve into the

  597. I'm of Nick

  598. and I'm of Greg

  599. and I'm of Matt.

  600. Oh

  601. how thankful I am

  602. that by the grace of God

  603. that has not been true.

  604. And I will say

  605. that I think it is

  606. to a large extent

  607. because of the humility

  608. of the men

  609. that I serve with

  610. that they have

  611. discouraged it

  612. they have

  613. not done anything

  614. to encourage it

  615. they have refuted it

  616. when it has come up

  617. they speak well

  618. of one another

  619. and it's made

  620. a huge difference.

  621. But it has been

  622. God's grace

  623. that that is true.

  624. Friends

  625. may this always be true

  626. of our church.

  627. I think there might be

  628. a second kind of division

  629. in our church

  630. though

  631. that may be

  632. a little more salient

  633. and may strike

  634. a little bit closer

  635. to home.

  636. So let me explore this

  637. for a few minutes.

  638. It's a division

  639. that's woven

  640. into the very fabric

  641. of our community

  642. just like

  643. in the Corinthian community

  644. there was a culture

  645. that encouraged

  646. that kind of division.

  647. The division

  648. that I see

  649. that's at least

  650. possible

  651. in our church

  652. would be this

  653. I am of Yale

  654. I am not

  655. of Yale.

  656. Now this may not be true

  657. some of you

  658. are going to be

  659. fence sitters

  660. some of you

  661. are going to be married

  662. some in

  663. some out

  664. some of you

  665. may not feel this

  666. at all

  667. but let's explore it

  668. for a few minutes

  669. just to think about it.

  670. One of the things

  671. that I think is true

  672. is that

  673. when you come

  674. to a prestigious

  675. university

  676. like Yale

  677. it's very easy

  678. for that to become

  679. very central

  680. to your identity

  681. very quickly.

  682. It's just

  683. it's not a conscious

  684. decision.

  685. You walk into

  686. the culture

  687. and part of it

  688. is the university

  689. itself tells you

  690. that you are the best

  691. and the brightest

  692. and you're going

  693. to change the world

  694. and you're going

  695. to be presidents

  696. of the United States

  697. and you're special

  698. because you're at Yale.

  699. and you're repeated

  700. over and over

  701. and over again.

  702. And I'm not sure

  703. you always know

  704. how deep it is.

  705. I'm not sure

  706. you always

  707. recognize

  708. how much

  709. you communicate

  710. that

  711. to those around you

  712. who aren't

  713. a part of Yale.

  714. It plays out

  715. in really

  716. simple ways

  717. very normal

  718. human ways

  719. maybe your

  720. social cliques

  721. the people

  722. who are in

  723. your professional

  724. school

  725. or in your

  726. college

  727. or in your

  728. you just

  729. naturally

  730. gravitate

  731. towards those

  732. and those

  733. are the people

  734. you talk to

  735. after church

  736. and those

  737. are the people

  738. who you get

  739. a small group

  740. with

  741. and they're

  742. the church

  743. that you

  744. sort of

  745. hang out

  746. with.

  747. Another way

  748. I think it

  749. seeps in

  750. is if you

  751. haven't listened

  752. to Pastor Greg's

  753. sermon that he

  754. preached a couple

  755. years ago

  756. in Jeremiah 29

  757. go back and look

  758. it up on the

  759. website and listen

  760. to it.

  761. He said there

  762. are lots of

  763. people who come

  764. to New Haven

  765. for a while

  766. to get their

  767. stuff and to

  768. get out

  769. and it's very

  770. easy in a

  771. place like Yale

  772. to do that.

  773. You come in

  774. and you're only

  775. here to get

  776. your degree

  777. to get through

  778. your program

  779. and to move

  780. on and you've

  781. got your sights

  782. set on something

  783. else and this

  784. is just a

  785. way station

  786. and you know

  787. just like stopping

  788. at a rest area

  789. you may ignore

  790. all the restaurants

  791. if all you need

  792. is a bathroom

  793. you know

  794. you're just doing

  795. you're getting

  796. what you need

  797. and then you

  798. keep going.

  799. It's easy in the

  800. questions that you

  801. ask when you

  802. meet someone new

  803. oh who are you

  804. right?

  805. What do you do?

  806. Oh what department

  807. are you in?

  808. Well you know

  809. what if you're

  810. just working in a

  811. job in town

  812. those can really

  813. be off-putting.

  814. They communicate

  815. automatically

  816. I'm not a part

  817. of your world.

  818. I say you

  819. but I want

  820. to say this

  821. I remember

  822. doing this

  823. I was a student

  824. once

  825. when I went

  826. off to university

  827. I lived in a town

  828. but I didn't know

  829. anything about it

  830. I didn't care

  831. anything about it

  832. it wasn't until

  833. after I graduated

  834. and stayed

  835. for a little while

  836. that I began

  837. to learn

  838. about the region

  839. and about the

  840. spiritual condition

  841. of it

  842. and the place

  843. of the church

  844. I was thankful

  845. that I was in a church

  846. where I actually

  847. got to know

  848. some of the church

  849. members outside

  850. of just the

  851. university community

  852. through service

  853. it's a plug

  854. for the one thing

  855. you get involved

  856. in those things

  857. you get to meet

  858. people in the church

  859. who are different

  860. which is wonderful

  861. but one of the things

  862. that I realized

  863. is that when I

  864. didn't care

  865. about the town

  866. that I was in

  867. it communicated

  868. to those who

  869. lived there

  870. it doesn't matter

  871. that's very painful

  872. and it's very dividing

  873. now

  874. how about those

  875. of you

  876. who are not

  877. of Yale

  878. often

  879. everything seems

  880. to be about

  881. Yale

  882. doesn't it

  883. you might feel

  884. envious

  885. of all the

  886. attention

  887. all the

  888. resources

  889. all the

  890. opportunities

  891. that people

  892. who are

  893. of Yale

  894. have

  895. you might feel

  896. insecure

  897. and threatened

  898. well they're

  899. really smart

  900. people

  901. I'm not very

  902. smart

  903. how do I

  904. go to Bible

  905. study

  906. with smart

  907. people like

  908. that

  909. that's

  910. intimidating

  911. you may feel

  912. contemptuous

  913. because you've

  914. seen them

  915. try to change

  916. a tire

  917. and you know

  918. they can't

  919. do it

  920. you may be

  921. weary

  922. if you've

  923. been here

  924. for a while

  925. of the stream

  926. that's flowing

  927. through our

  928. church

  929. you may

  930. resent them

  931. for taking

  932. and not

  933. giving

  934. it seems

  935. and you may

  936. feel like

  937. an overlooked

  938. majority

  939. not valued

  940. or seen

  941. very well

  942. in our

  943. society

  944. here in

  945. New Haven

  946. maybe even

  947. here in

  948. our church

  949. church

  950. I expose

  951. this division

  952. not because

  953. I think

  954. it is

  955. tearing

  956. our church

  957. apart

  958. but because

  959. I think

  960. it could

  961. I expose

  962. it because

  963. I want

  964. us to see

  965. that if

  966. we have

  967. taken on

  968. these

  969. attitudes

  970. the root

  971. of them

  972. may be

  973. in our

  974. identity

  975. we see

  976. ourselves

  977. in one

  978. camp

  979. or the

  980. other

  981. and in

  982. doing so

  983. we allow

  984. ourselves

  985. to separate

  986. from people

  987. who are

  988. different

  989. from us

  990. we think

  991. we end up

  992. competing

  993. for the

  994. resources

  995. for the

  996. attention

  997. of the

  998. pastors

  999. for the

  1000. money

  1001. and the

  1002. budget

  1003. we could

  1004. end up

  1005. having a

  1006. mutual

  1007. attitude

  1008. of

  1009. superiority

  1010. one over

  1011. the other

  1012. we can

  1013. have a

  1014. disregard

  1015. or be

  1016. dismissive

  1017. of one

  1018. another

  1019. and friends

  1020. if we

  1021. embrace

  1022. that

  1023. then we're

  1024. a part

  1025. of the

  1026. problem

  1027. that Paul

  1028. is exposing

  1029. and confronting

  1030. in the

  1031. church

  1032. in

  1033. Corinth

  1034. let me

  1035. just say

  1036. this

  1037. out of

  1038. these

  1039. two

  1040. things

  1041. that I

  1042. think

  1043. are very

  1044. salient

  1045. in our

  1046. church

  1047. culture

  1048. I would

  1049. just want

  1050. to ask

  1051. a series

  1052. of questions

  1053. because there

  1054. are lots

  1055. of things

  1056. that we

  1057. can put

  1058. our identities

  1059. in

  1060. there are

  1061. lots

  1062. of ways

  1063. that we

  1064. can build

  1065. ourselves

  1066. up

  1067. and separate

  1068. ourselves

  1069. from those

  1070. around us

  1071. even within

  1072. the church

  1073. so let me

  1074. just ask you

  1075. some questions

  1076. to reflect

  1077. on your

  1078. own

  1079. when I

  1080. introduce

  1081. myself

  1082. what do

  1083. I say

  1084. what does

  1085. that say

  1086. who I

  1087. think I

  1088. am in

  1089. this

  1090. particular

  1091. relationship

  1092. how do

  1093. what

  1094. how I

  1095. share

  1096. myself

  1097. how does

  1098. that position

  1099. me with

  1100. regard to

  1101. the other

  1102. person

  1103. do I

  1104. use my

  1105. identity

  1106. subtly

  1107. or not

  1108. so subtly

  1109. to make

  1110. myself

  1111. look good

  1112. in the

  1113. eyes of

  1114. others

  1115. we need

  1116. to ask

  1117. ourselves

  1118. these

  1119. questions

  1120. I think

  1121. this tendency

  1122. runs pretty

  1123. deep

  1124. in human

  1125. and humanity

  1126. the good

  1127. news is

  1128. there's

  1129. hope

  1130. we don't

  1131. have to

  1132. be divided

  1133. our longing

  1134. for a

  1135. unity that

  1136. is real

  1137. and substantial

  1138. is possible

  1139. in the

  1140. kingdom of

  1141. God

  1142. and in

  1143. Christ

  1144. because when

  1145. we find

  1146. our identity

  1147. not in

  1148. all of

  1149. these other

  1150. things

  1151. but in

  1152. Christ

  1153. himself

  1154. this

  1155. then

  1156. produces

  1157. a unity

  1158. in us

  1159. that is

  1160. a beautiful

  1161. thing to

  1162. behold

  1163. let's

  1164. explore how

  1165. Paul talks

  1166. about this

  1167. in the

  1168. passage

  1169. look back

  1170. with me

  1171. in verses

  1172. we're going

  1173. to start

  1174. in verse

  1175. 10

  1176. because you

  1177. see

  1178. Paul's

  1179. initial

  1180. solution

  1181. it seems

  1182. to be

  1183. very easy

  1184. don't be

  1185. divided

  1186. agree

  1187. be of

  1188. the same

  1189. mind

  1190. think the

  1191. same

  1192. have the

  1193. same

  1194. judgment

  1195. just get

  1196. along

  1197. right

  1198. and he's

  1199. not doing

  1200. that superficially

  1201. you'll see

  1202. he's building

  1203. the case

  1204. for it

  1205. but at the

  1206. very beginning

  1207. he's saying

  1208. don't be

  1209. divided

  1210. if you

  1211. feel

  1212. divided

  1213. you are

  1214. doing

  1215. something

  1216. that is

  1217. contrary

  1218. to your

  1219. nature

  1220. and contrary

  1221. to the

  1222. nature

  1223. of the

  1224. community

  1225. that God

  1226. has called

  1227. you into

  1228. having

  1229. the same

  1230. judgment

  1231. and having

  1232. the same

  1233. mind

  1234. is not

  1235. just agreeing

  1236. to disagree

  1237. it's not

  1238. just shallow

  1239. tolerance

  1240. in the way

  1241. that our

  1242. world often

  1243. presents it

  1244. today

  1245. it's a

  1246. deeper

  1247. unity

  1248. of values

  1249. and of

  1250. priorities

  1251. and of

  1252. ends

  1253. it is that

  1254. there is a

  1255. core of

  1256. truth

  1257. that matters

  1258. to us

  1259. a truth

  1260. about who

  1261. God is

  1262. and what

  1263. he's done

  1264. in the world

  1265. and who

  1266. we are

  1267. in relationship

  1268. to him

  1269. and not

  1270. only is

  1271. that truth

  1272. true

  1273. but it

  1274. is the

  1275. most important

  1276. thing about

  1277. us

  1278. so it

  1279. is both

  1280. the truth

  1281. of it

  1282. and the

  1283. significance

  1284. of it

  1285. that brings

  1286. us together

  1287. that's what

  1288. Paul is saying

  1289. when he talks

  1290. about being

  1291. of the same

  1292. mind

  1293. and the

  1294. same

  1295. what is

  1296. the phrase

  1297. let me look

  1298. at it

  1299. same mind

  1300. and the

  1301. same judgment

  1302. right

  1303. he's saying

  1304. this is at

  1305. the core

  1306. in Christ

  1307. this is

  1308. where it

  1309. is

  1310. and there

  1311. are lots

  1312. of ways

  1313. that he

  1314. helps us

  1315. understand

  1316. the basis

  1317. of this

  1318. do you

  1319. notice

  1320. that one

  1321. of the

  1322. first

  1323. things

  1324. he did

  1325. is to

  1326. say

  1327. brothers

  1328. I

  1329. appeal

  1330. to you

  1331. brothers

  1332. and then

  1333. he repeats

  1334. it at the

  1335. end of

  1336. verse 11

  1337. my

  1338. brothers

  1339. he's

  1340. saying

  1341. God

  1342. has

  1343. called

  1344. us

  1345. in

  1346. Christ

  1347. into

  1348. a

  1349. family

  1350. now

  1351. your

  1352. family

  1353. may

  1354. be

  1355. completely

  1356. fractured

  1357. your

  1358. family

  1359. may

  1360. feel

  1361. like

  1362. there's

  1363. no

  1364. unity

  1365. in it

  1366. at all

  1367. but

  1368. the

  1369. biblical

  1370. picture

  1371. the

  1372. biblical

  1373. picture

  1374. of

  1375. unity

  1376. is

  1377. that

  1378. God

  1379. has

  1380. called

  1381. you

  1382. into

  1383. one

  1384. family

  1385. with

  1386. one

  1387. God

  1388. and

  1389. father

  1390. over

  1391. us

  1392. all

  1393. and

  1394. we

  1395. are

  1396. called

  1397. to be

  1398. brothers

  1399. and

  1400. sisters

  1401. of

  1402. Jesus

  1403. the

  1404. redeemer

  1405. and

  1406. the

  1407. king

  1408. what

  1409. a

  1410. glorious

  1411. thing

  1412. that

  1413. is

  1414. so

  1415. he

  1416. says

  1417. how

  1418. can

  1419. we

  1420. be

  1421. divided

  1422. against

  1423. one

  1424. another

  1425. if

  1426. Christ

  1427. has

  1428. called

  1429. us

  1430. into

  1431. one

  1432. family

  1433. and

  1434. then

  1435. secondly

  1436. he

  1437. says

  1438. and

  1439. I

  1440. appeal

  1441. to

  1442. you

  1443. in

  1444. the

  1445. name

  1446. of

  1447. Christ

  1448. this

  1449. is

  1450. in

  1451. verse

  1452. 10

  1453. again

  1454. he's

  1455. saying

  1456. we

  1457. are

  1458. not

  1459. only

  1460. called

  1461. into

  1462. this

  1463. family

  1464. but

  1465. we

  1466. have

  1467. one

  1468. authority

  1469. over

  1470. us

  1471. the

  1472. church

  1473. has

  1474. one

  1475. head

  1476. who

  1477. is

  1478. Jesus

  1479. Christ

  1480. he

  1481. alone

  1482. has

  1483. the

  1484. ultimate

  1485. authority

  1486. and

  1487. so

  1488. how

  1489. can

  1490. we

  1491. divide

  1492. ourselves

  1493. against

  1494. one

  1495. another

  1496. and

  1497. claim

  1498. identity

  1499. in

  1500. this

  1501. person

  1502. and

  1503. this

  1504. person

  1505. when

  1506. there

  1507. is

  1508. one

  1509. person

  1510. who

  1511. alone

  1512. has

  1513. the

  1514. authority

  1515. over

  1516. us

  1517. and

  1518. then

  1519. Paul

  1520. in

  1521. verse

  1522. 13

  1523. or

  1524. verse

  1525. 12

  1526. no

  1527. verse

  1528. 13

  1529. I

  1530. love

  1531. Paul's

  1532. rhetorical

  1533. questions

  1534. you should

  1535. look

  1536. particularly

  1537. in

  1538. first

  1539. Corinthians

  1540. he

  1541. pulls

  1542. them

  1543. out

  1544. a

  1545. lot

  1546. to

  1547. get

  1548. his

  1549. point

  1550. across

  1551. and

  1552. it's

  1553. always

  1554. worth

  1555. asking

  1556. when

  1557. there's

  1558. a

  1559. question

  1560. what

  1561. is

  1562. Paul

  1563. expecting

  1564. the

  1565. answer

  1566. to

  1567. be

  1568. right

  1569. look at

  1570. verse

  1571. 13

  1572. is

  1573. Christ

  1574. divided

  1575. well

  1576. of course

  1577. not

  1578. how can

  1579. you

  1580. divide

  1581. Christ

  1582. so

  1583. how

  1584. can

  1585. you

  1586. divide

  1587. his

  1588. church

  1589. that's

  1590. the

  1591. answer

  1592. that

  1593. he's

  1594. giving

  1595. and

  1596. then

  1597. he

  1598. keeps

  1599. going

  1600. was

  1601. Paul

  1602. crucified

  1603. for

  1604. you

  1605. well

  1606. this is

  1607. absurd

  1608. of course

  1609. not

  1610. only

  1611. Christ

  1612. was

  1613. crucified

  1614. then

  1615. why

  1616. are you

  1617. making

  1618. so much

  1619. of

  1620. Paul

  1621. that

  1622. you

  1623. are

  1624. diminishing

  1625. the

  1626. excellency

  1627. and the

  1628. supremacy

  1629. of

  1630. Christ

  1631. he keeps

  1632. going

  1633. were you

  1634. baptized

  1635. into the

  1636. name

  1637. of Paul

  1638. right

  1639. he picks up

  1640. this

  1641. this

  1642. baptized

  1643. thing

  1644. of course

  1645. you wouldn't

  1646. be baptized

  1647. in the name

  1648. of Paul

  1649. Paul hasn't

  1650. done anything

  1651. but proclaim

  1652. to you

  1653. what Jesus

  1654. has done

  1655. you

  1656. are baptized

  1657. in the

  1658. name

  1659. of Jesus

  1660. Christ

  1661. because

  1662. he's

  1663. done

  1664. the

  1665. work

  1666. of

  1667. redemption

  1668. for you

  1669. and we'll

  1670. explore that

  1671. as we get

  1672. down a little

  1673. bit further

  1674. and this

  1675. leads him

  1676. a little

  1677. bit into

  1678. this

  1679. place

  1680. of

  1681. baptism

  1682. and I

  1683. love

  1684. how he

  1685. does

  1686. this

  1687. because

  1688. he

  1689. says

  1690. look

  1691. I'm

  1692. glad

  1693. I didn't

  1694. baptize

  1695. many

  1696. of you

  1697. because

  1698. then it

  1699. might

  1700. look

  1701. like

  1702. I

  1703. was

  1704. trying

  1705. to

  1706. build

  1707. my

  1708. own

  1709. little

  1710. army

  1711. sort

  1712. of

  1713. counting

  1714. my

  1715. scalps

  1716. you know

  1717. I'm

  1718. trying

  1719. to

  1720. get

  1721. people

  1722. to

  1723. be

  1724. my

  1725. people

  1726. by

  1727. baptizing

  1728. him

  1729. he's

  1730. like

  1731. I'm

  1732. glad

  1733. I

  1734. didn't

  1735. baptize

  1736. and then

  1737. in

  1738. God's

  1739. sovereignty

  1740. this

  1741. little

  1742. aside

  1743. in

  1744. verse

  1745. 16

  1746. is

  1747. so

  1748. beautiful

  1749. isn't

  1750. it

  1751. right

  1752. because

  1753. it's

  1754. funny

  1755. Paul's

  1756. like

  1757. I

  1758. only

  1759. baptized

  1760. to

  1761. oh

  1762. this

  1763. what

  1764. is

  1765. Paul

  1766. saying

  1767. it

  1768. didn't

  1769. matter

  1770. to

  1771. him

  1772. it

  1773. wasn't

  1774. important

  1775. at

  1776. all

  1777. who

  1778. it

  1779. was

  1780. who

  1781. performed

  1782. the

  1783. baptism

  1784. ceremony

  1785. what Paul

  1786. cared

  1787. about

  1788. is

  1789. who

  1790. were

  1791. you

  1792. baptized

  1793. into

  1794. and

  1795. you

  1796. were

  1797. baptized

  1798. not

  1799. into

  1800. your

  1801. church

  1802. leader

  1803. not

  1804. into

  1805. your

  1806. denomination

  1807. not

  1808. into

  1809. your

  1810. particular

  1811. church

  1812. faction

  1813. you

  1814. were

  1815. baptized

  1816. into

  1817. Christ

  1818. and

  1819. in

  1820. the

  1821. name

  1822. of

  1823. Christ

  1824. so

  1825. how

  1826. can

  1827. you

  1828. divide

  1829. over

  1830. these

  1831. things

  1832. which

  1833. leads

  1834. us

  1835. to

  1836. verse

  1837. 17

  1838. in

  1839. some

  1840. ways

  1841. this

  1842. is

  1843. where

  1844. we

  1845. see

  1846. the

  1847. end

  1848. of

  1849. where

  1850. Paul

  1851. has

  1852. been

  1853. taking

  1854. this

  1855. argument

  1856. he's

  1857. saying

  1858. you

  1859. are

  1860. divided

  1861. don't

  1862. be

  1863. be

  1864. of

  1865. one

  1866. mind

  1867. be

  1868. of

  1869. one

  1870. mind

  1871. because

  1872. you

  1873. have

  1874. all

  1875. of

  1876. these

  1877. things

  1878. in

  1879. Christ

  1880. in

  1881. common

  1882. then

  1883. in

  1884. verse

  1885. 17

  1886. what

  1887. he

  1888. says

  1889. is

  1890. read

  1891. it

  1892. with

  1893. me

  1894. for

  1895. Christ

  1896. did

  1897. not

  1898. send

  1899. me

  1900. to

  1901. baptize

  1902. but

  1903. to

  1904. preach

  1905. the

  1906. gospel

  1907. not

  1908. with

  1909. words

  1910. of

  1911. eloquent

  1912. wisdom

  1913. lest

  1914. the

  1915. cross

  1916. of

  1917. Christ

  1918. be

  1919. emptied

  1920. of

  1921. its

  1922. power

  1923. now

  1924. look

  1925. Paul

  1926. didn't

  1927. not

  1928. baptize

  1929. people

  1930. right

  1931. Matthew

  1932. 28

  1933. 18

  1934. would

  1935. say

  1936. that

  1937. he

  1938. actually

  1939. was

  1940. called

  1941. to

  1942. baptize

  1943. people

  1944. just

  1945. like

  1946. everyone

  1947. else

  1948. in

  1949. the

  1950. church

  1951. is

  1952. called

  1953. to

  1954. go

  1955. and

  1956. make

  1957. disciples

  1958. and

  1959. baptize

  1960. people

  1961. but

  1962. what

  1963. Paul

  1964. is

  1965. saying

  1966. is

  1967. that

  1968. my

  1969. job

  1970. before

  1971. you

  1972. is

  1973. to

  1974. proclaim

  1975. what

  1976. God

  1977. has

  1978. done

  1979. in

  1980. Christ

  1981. and

  1982. don't

  1983. use

  1984. baptism

  1985. as

  1986. this

  1987. kingdom

  1988. I

  1989. wasn't

  1990. called

  1991. to

  1992. do

  1993. that

  1994. that's

  1995. not

  1996. why

  1997. I

  1998. came

  1999. I

  2000. came

  2001. to

  2002. proclaim

  2003. to

  2004. you

  2005. the

  2006. excellencies

  2007. of

  2008. what

  2009. God

  2010. has

  2011. done

  2012. in

  2013. Jesus

  2014. and

  2015. not

  2016. only

  2017. did

  2018. I

  2019. do

  2020. that

  2021. but

  2022. I

  2023. did

  2024. it

  2025. not

  2026. buying

  2027. into

  2028. the

  2029. impressive

  2030. ways

  2031. that I

  2032. could

  2033. have

  2034. spoken

  2035. to

  2036. impress

  2037. you

  2038. why

  2039. because

  2040. I

  2041. want

  2042. you

  2043. to

  2044. see

  2045. the

  2046. power

  2047. of

  2048. the

  2049. cross

  2050. friends

  2051. this

  2052. is

  2053. the

  2054. very

  2055. center

  2056. of

  2057. what

  2058. Paul

  2059. wants

  2060. us

  2061. to

  2062. get

  2063. to

  2064. it

  2065. is

  2066. the

  2067. cross

  2068. of

  2069. Christ

  2070. that

  2071. alone

  2072. has

  2073. the

  2074. power

  2075. to

  2076. give

  2077. us

  2078. an

  2079. identity

  2080. that

  2081. can

  2082. actually

  2083. produce

  2084. true

  2085. unity

  2086. when

  2087. we

  2088. grab

  2089. hold

  2090. of

  2091. other

  2092. identities

  2093. spiritual

  2094. leaders

  2095. theological

  2096. schools

  2097. who

  2098. baptized

  2099. me

  2100. what's

  2101. my

  2102. education

  2103. whatever

  2104. it

  2105. is

  2106. when

  2107. we

  2108. grab

  2109. on

  2110. those

  2111. things

  2112. and

  2113. make

  2114. them

  2115. our

  2116. primary

  2117. thing

  2118. we

  2119. deny

  2120. the

  2121. centrality

  2122. of

  2123. the

  2124. work

  2125. of

  2126. Christ

  2127. in

  2128. our

  2129. lives

  2130. we

  2131. deny

  2132. that

  2133. the

  2134. cross

  2135. is

  2136. as

  2137. significant

  2138. as

  2139. it

  2140. should

  2141. be

  2142. in

  2143. our

  2144. lives

  2145. but

  2146. friends

  2147. when

  2148. Christ

  2149. is

  2150. our

  2151. identity

  2152. when

  2153. he

  2154. is

  2155. central

  2156. in

  2157. our

  2158. lives

  2159. when

  2160. he

  2161. is

  2162. central

  2163. in

  2164. our

  2165. thoughts

  2166. about

  2167. who

  2168. we

  2169. are

  2170. oh

  2171. friends

  2172. it

  2173. makes

  2174. all

  2175. the

  2176. difference

  2177. because

  2178. we

  2179. gather

  2180. together

  2181. under

  2182. him

  2183. and

  2184. when

  2185. we

  2186. interact

  2187. with

  2188. one

  2189. another

  2190. we're

  2191. able

  2192. to

  2193. come

  2194. to

  2195. each

  2196. other

  2197. not

  2198. figuring

  2199. out

  2200. and

  2201. comparing

  2202. and

  2203. contrasting

  2204. figure out

  2205. where do

  2206. I fit

  2207. with these

  2208. people

  2209. but we

  2210. encounter

  2211. each

  2212. other

  2213. instead

  2214. with

  2215. the joy

  2216. of

  2217. exploring

  2218. and learning

  2219. about

  2220. the grace

  2221. of God

  2222. in this

  2223. person's

  2224. life

  2225. we get

  2226. to hear

  2227. their

  2228. story

  2229. and we

  2230. get

  2231. to see

  2232. how

  2233. Christ

  2234. and the

  2235. cross

  2236. of Christ

  2237. has

  2238. intersected

  2239. with

  2240. them

  2241. because

  2242. of this

  2243. when Christ

  2244. is our

  2245. central

  2246. identity

  2247. these

  2248. other

  2249. things

  2250. which are

  2251. true

  2252. of us

  2253. fade

  2254. into the

  2255. background

  2256. they don't

  2257. become the

  2258. thing that

  2259. we need

  2260. in order

  2261. to connect

  2262. with one

  2263. another

  2264. when Christ

  2265. is our

  2266. identity

  2267. we can

  2268. give up

  2269. our

  2270. comparison

  2271. we can

  2272. give up

  2273. our

  2274. competitive

  2275. spirit

  2276. of

  2277. where do

  2278. I fit

  2279. am I

  2280. more

  2281. spiritual

  2282. or less

  2283. spiritual

  2284. than this

  2285. person

  2286. am I

  2287. more

  2288. important

  2289. or less

  2290. important

  2291. in the

  2292. church

  2293. is my

  2294. role

  2295. more

  2296. significant

  2297. or less

  2298. significant

  2299. in the

  2300. church

  2301. none

  2302. of these

  2303. things

  2304. matter

  2305. we don't

  2306. need to

  2307. make much

  2308. of ourselves

  2309. because Christ

  2310. has called

  2311. us

  2312. and made

  2313. us his

  2314. own

  2315. and so

  2316. we can

  2317. instead

  2318. love

  2319. and serve

  2320. others

  2321. we can

  2322. make much

  2323. of others

  2324. and friends

  2325. when we know

  2326. that our

  2327. identity is in

  2328. Christ

  2329. we don't

  2330. spend so

  2331. much of

  2332. our time

  2333. so much

  2334. of our

  2335. heart

  2336. energy

  2337. so much

  2338. of our

  2339. passions

  2340. desperately

  2341. seeking

  2342. to find

  2343. something

  2344. that's going

  2345. to be so

  2346. significant

  2347. that will

  2348. actually

  2349. bear the

  2350. weight

  2351. of our

  2352. human

  2353. identity

  2354. we think

  2355. that if

  2356. my success

  2357. in my

  2358. career

  2359. or the

  2360. way that

  2361. I fulfill

  2362. my duties

  2363. at church

  2364. or whatever

  2365. it is

  2366. if we think

  2367. that those

  2368. things are

  2369. where we

  2370. will find

  2371. it

  2372. we find

  2373. that they

  2374. can't actually

  2375. bear the

  2376. weight

  2377. and when we

  2378. find that

  2379. Christ is

  2380. actually the

  2381. center of

  2382. it

  2383. then all

  2384. those other

  2385. things

  2386. are a part

  2387. of who we

  2388. are but they

  2389. don't have to

  2390. bear that

  2391. weight

  2392. and that's

  2393. a beautiful

  2394. gift

  2395. to us

  2396. I read a

  2397. story

  2398. I think it

  2399. wasn't in an

  2400. evangelism book

  2401. it was a long

  2402. time ago

  2403. I couldn't

  2404. find it

  2405. but I read

  2406. this great

  2407. story once

  2408. about

  2409. in the

  2410. 1970s

  2411. some of you

  2412. will remember

  2413. this

  2414. some of you

  2415. weren't born

  2416. yet

  2417. when people

  2418. used to wear

  2419. coats and ties

  2420. to church

  2421. all the time

  2422. everybody

  2423. and it

  2424. was expected

  2425. and it

  2426. was a way

  2427. to honor

  2428. the Lord

  2429. and it

  2430. was a good

  2431. thing

  2432. and during

  2433. the early

  2434. 70s there

  2435. was a revival

  2436. in America

  2437. and it was a

  2438. revival especially

  2439. among the young

  2440. people and

  2441. especially among

  2442. the people who

  2443. were counter

  2444. cultural

  2445. some of you

  2446. may have been

  2447. some of those

  2448. people

  2449. the hippies who

  2450. went to

  2451. Woodstock also

  2452. became followers

  2453. of Jesus

  2454. in lots

  2455. of ways

  2456. and he

  2457. tells of a

  2458. story of a

  2459. young man

  2460. with long

  2461. hair

  2462. and a tank

  2463. top

  2464. and flip

  2465. flops

  2466. who walked

  2467. into a

  2468. church

  2469. because he

  2470. had been

  2471. encountered

  2472. Christ

  2473. and been

  2474. changed

  2475. by him

  2476. and he

  2477. walked

  2478. into church

  2479. he looked

  2480. around

  2481. he looked

  2482. at all

  2483. the suits

  2484. thought well

  2485. and he

  2486. walked up

  2487. to the

  2488. front

  2489. and he

  2490. sat

  2491. on the

  2492. floor

  2493. right there

  2494. and it

  2495. was awkward

  2496. and it

  2497. was like

  2498. whoa

  2499. and one

  2500. of the

  2501. ushers

  2502. took off

  2503. his coat

  2504. walked down

  2505. the aisle

  2506. took off

  2507. his shoes

  2508. and sat

  2509. down next

  2510. to the

  2511. young man

  2512. and they

  2513. worshipped

  2514. together

  2515. it was a

  2516. very

  2517. practical

  2518. very

  2519. pragmatic

  2520. very

  2521. visible

  2522. way

  2523. in which

  2524. that usher

  2525. understood

  2526. that though

  2527. he wore

  2528. a church

  2529. tie to

  2530. church

  2531. because it

  2532. was the

  2533. culture

  2534. of the

  2535. day

  2536. that wasn't

  2537. what his

  2538. identity

  2539. was

  2540. and he

  2541. saw in

  2542. this young

  2543. man

  2544. with his

  2545. tank top

  2546. and his

  2547. long hair

  2548. and his

  2549. flip flops

  2550. Jesus

  2551. a brother

  2552. and he

  2553. welcomed him

  2554. friends

  2555. this is of

  2556. course the

  2557. very nature

  2558. of the

  2559. gospel

  2560. the reason

  2561. why

  2562. taking these

  2563. identities

  2564. and creating

  2565. divisions among

  2566. you

  2567. empties the

  2568. cross

  2569. of its

  2570. power

  2571. is because

  2572. it has

  2573. nothing to

  2574. do with

  2575. the one

  2576. who hung

  2577. on the

  2578. cross

  2579. Jesus

  2580. came

  2581. not in a

  2582. competitive

  2583. spirit

  2584. not to

  2585. assert himself

  2586. as the

  2587. ruler by

  2588. riding on a

  2589. horse with

  2590. an army

  2591. in his

  2592. back

  2593. but Jesus

  2594. came

  2595. not to

  2596. be served

  2597. but to

  2598. serve

  2599. to give his

  2600. life a

  2601. ransom for

  2602. many

  2603. money

  2604. he went

  2605. to the

  2606. cross

  2607. to die

  2608. for our

  2609. sins

  2610. he took

  2611. the penalty

  2612. that they

  2613. deserved

  2614. that we

  2615. deserve

  2616. so that we

  2617. don't have

  2618. to

  2619. he lived a

  2620. life not of

  2621. self

  2622. exaltation

  2623. but of

  2624. self

  2625. sacrifice

  2626. he bought

  2627. us with

  2628. the price

  2629. of his

  2630. very

  2631. life

  2632. and this

  2633. is why

  2634. Paul says

  2635. how can

  2636. you divide

  2637. the people

  2638. of Christ

  2639. around anything

  2640. when this

  2641. precious treasure

  2642. of the blood

  2643. of the very

  2644. son of God

  2645. has bought

  2646. you and

  2647. brought you

  2648. into a

  2649. unity

  2650. this is the

  2651. glory of the

  2652. church

  2653. this is the

  2654. goodness

  2655. so who are

  2656. you

  2657. is a really

  2658. important question

  2659. the Bible

  2660. would say

  2661. that the most

  2662. important question

  2663. for you to

  2664. ask is

  2665. are you in

  2666. Christ

  2667. or are you

  2668. not

  2669. and if you're

  2670. here this

  2671. morning and

  2672. you're exploring

  2673. Christianity

  2674. I hope you

  2675. will see

  2676. that though the

  2677. church may

  2678. look very

  2679. fragmented

  2680. in its

  2681. forms and

  2682. in its

  2683. modern day

  2684. expressions

  2685. this is not

  2686. the intent

  2687. and this is

  2688. not the

  2689. goal

  2690. and this is

  2691. not how

  2692. it will

  2693. be

  2694. there will

  2695. be a

  2696. unity

  2697. in the

  2698. people of

  2699. God

  2700. in eternity

  2701. that will

  2702. be a

  2703. beautiful

  2704. thing to

  2705. behold

  2706. and there

  2707. is in

  2708. fact even

  2709. now a

  2710. beauty in

  2711. the people

  2712. of God

  2713. as people

  2714. from different

  2715. denominations

  2716. and from

  2717. different

  2718. socioeconomic

  2719. levels

  2720. and from

  2721. different races

  2722. and from

  2723. Yale and

  2724. not Yale

  2725. gather together

  2726. every Sunday

  2727. to worship

  2728. God

  2729. and I hope

  2730. you will see

  2731. that this

  2732. is founded

  2733. in the very

  2734. work of

  2735. Christ

  2736. and he calls

  2737. you to

  2738. believe and

  2739. come in

  2740. and to

  2741. the rest

  2742. to those of

  2743. you who are

  2744. in the church

  2745. already

  2746. may we make

  2747. much of

  2748. Christ

  2749. I don't

  2750. want to

  2751. talk about

  2752. unity

  2753. every week

  2754. I want

  2755. to talk

  2756. about

  2757. Christ

  2758. and as

  2759. we talk

  2760. about

  2761. Christ

  2762. and as

  2763. we exalt

  2764. him in

  2765. our hearts

  2766. as we

  2767. treasure

  2768. him

  2769. as we

  2770. make

  2771. him

  2772. central

  2773. in our

  2774. identity

  2775. as all

  2776. the other

  2777. things that

  2778. we do

  2779. in our

  2780. lives

  2781. find their

  2782. place

  2783. under

  2784. him

  2785. and in

  2786. relationship

  2787. to him

  2788. then Christ

  2789. is great

  2790. for us

  2791. and then we

  2792. will be

  2793. a church

  2794. not divided

  2795. but united

  2796. let's pray

  2797. Lord thank you

  2798. for this

  2799. word

  2800. we thank you

  2801. for Christ

  2802. and that the

  2803. cross

  2804. has a power

  2805. to transform

  2806. us

  2807. to give us

  2808. a new

  2809. identity

  2810. far more

  2811. profound

  2812. than anything

  2813. we would

  2814. create on

  2815. our own

  2816. and Lord

  2817. in that

  2818. identity

  2819. you produce

  2820. in us

  2821. a unity

  2822. Lord

  2823. that has

  2824. beauty

  2825. to it

  2826. God we

  2827. pray you

  2828. would

  2829. we pray

  2830. that in

  2831. your mercy

  2832. Lord

  2833. you would

  2834. help us

  2835. help us

  2836. to be

  2837. that kind

  2838. of church

  2839. that your

  2840. love

  2841. and your

  2842. mercy

  2843. your

  2844. righteousness

  2845. and justice

  2846. seen at

  2847. the cross

  2848. would be

  2849. magnified

  2850. and proclaimed

  2851. through our

  2852. body

  2853. not by our

  2854. divisions

  2855. but by our

  2856. unity

  2857. we pray

  2858. these things

  2859. in Jesus

  2860. name

  2861. Amen
