  1. This land is your land.

  2. This land is my land.

  3. From California to the New York Islands,

  4. from the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters,

  5. this land was made for you and me.

  6. So sang Woody Guthrie in the 1940s about the United States,

  7. a land overflowing with promise and worthy of musical adulation.

  8. This song and the vision of America that it captures

  9. have found so much resonance that in 2002,

  10. the Library of Congress deemed the song a national treasure,

  11. worthy of a spot in the National Recording Registry.

  12. In a strange irony,

  13. the family of Guthrie would later report that on trips to Communist China,

  14. they would sometimes overhear little Chinese children singing

  15. in broken and stunted English those same words.

  16. California, New York, Redwood Forest, all of it, all about China.

  17. A deep and strange irony, but perhaps understandable,

  18. for men and women all over the world have often looked upon their own land

  19. with admiration, joy, excitement, and broken into song.

  20. Human beings are creatures of location, of place,

  21. and we tend to think of those places as important,

  22. as having an importance that cannot simply be minimized down to a particular bit of real estate.

  23. There's culture associated with the place.

  24. New Haveners brag about our pizza.

  25. Texans brag about their barbecue.

  26. In fact, all the South argues about their barbecue.

  27. Don't get in the middle of fights about the barbecue.

  28. Paris is synonymous with romance.

  29. New York City is identical with a young man or woman's desire

  30. to leave an old life behind and make it for themselves in the world.

  31. Location matters.

  32. In our text for this evening,

  33. we see God showing the importance of location

  34. by keeping a promise he made to David

  35. to make him king over all of Israel,

  36. which is itself a partial fulfillment of the promise that God made to Abraham.

  37. And this part of the promise is tied to a particular place.

  38. Jerusalem.

  39. The city of David.

  40. The city, indeed, of God.

  41. Think about all of the meaning associated with the city of Jerusalem.

  42. Perhaps one of the most important,

  43. perhaps the most important city in the history of mankind.

  44. Jerusalem.

  45. And in our passage tonight,

  46. we see Jerusalem fall into the hands of the Israelites for the first time.

  47. But just as a way of recap,

  48. let's talk about where we've been.

  49. Through our sermon series in 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel,

  50. which has been going on for a little while now,

  51. we have seen Israel cry out for a king.

  52. And God answers this cry in Saul.

  53. Saul is anointed to fill this position,

  54. but Saul very quickly, it seems,

  55. disqualifies himself.

  56. Just a few years previous to our passage now,

  57. he was killed in a fight with the Philistines,

  58. he and his son.

  59. But there was another one in Israel.

  60. Another one who was also anointed king,

  61. even before the death of Saul.

  62. And this was David.

  63. David had been anointed king over the southern tribes of Judah,

  64. but the northern tribes of Israel

  65. were still having a little bit of a power fight.

  66. Trying to see who would secede Saul.

  67. That power struggle has left both good men and bad men dead.

  68. And that's where we are in our story

  69. when we arrive at our text for this evening.

  70. 2 Samuel chapter 5.

    2 Samuel 5 chapter mention

  71. Let's look at that text now.

  72. And as we read it together and try to make some sense of it,

  73. I hope that we'll see one thing.

  74. My main overarching point for this evening is,

  75. the Lord establishes his servant in Zion.

  76. The Lord establishes his servant in Zion.

  77. So, let's read together 2 Samuel 5.

  78. Here's what we'll do.

  79. We'll read a section at a time,

  80. I'll make some brief comments on that section,

  81. and then at the end we'll come back and we'll sum it all up.

  82. Okay?

  83. So, 2 Samuel chapter 5.

    2 Samuel 5 chapter mention

  84. The first thing I want you to see is that

  85. the Lord establishes his servant in Zion

  86. among a united people.

  87. The Lord establishes his servant in Zion

  88. among a united people.

  89. 2 Samuel 5, verse 1.

    2 Samuel 5:1

  90. Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron.

  91. Let's back up for a minute.

  92. Quick geography lesson.

  93. Okay?

  94. What I want you to do is make a fist like this with your hands.

  95. This is the topography of Israel.

  96. Okay?

  97. On your knuckles, that's the west, that's the Mediterranean.

  98. And then Israel goes up,

  99. and your knuckles right here are the mountain range.

  100. Jerusalem sits right up here,

  101. and then it goes down into the Dead Sea.

  102. Okay?

  103. That's how it goes west to east.

  104. Now, north to south.

  105. Take your hand like this.

  106. This is the south.

  107. This is the north.

  108. You've got Golan Heights.

  109. Jerusalem is right about here.

  110. And this is Hebron down in this area,

  111. and then this desert.

  112. Okay?

  113. Now you can sort of use your two hands like this,

  114. and you've got your map of Israel.

  115. Okay?

  116. Here we go.

  117. All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron.

  118. Tribes of Israel are in the north.

  119. Hebron's down here.

  120. And said,

  121. Behold, we are your bone and flesh.

  122. In times past,

  123. when Saul was king over us,

  124. it was you who led out and brought in Israel.

  125. And the Lord said to you,

  126. You shall be shepherd of my people Israel,

  127. and you shall be a prince over Israel.

  128. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron,

  129. and King David made a covenant with him at Hebron before the Lord,

  130. and they anointed David king over Israel.

  131. David was 30 years old when he began to reign,

  132. and he reigned 40 years.

  133. At Hebron, he reigned over Judah seven years and six months.

  134. And at Jerusalem, he reigned over all Israel and Judea 33 years.

  135. So when you think of Israel,

  136. think of these northern tribes.

  137. When you think of Judah,

  138. think of these southern tribes.

  139. Okay?

  140. What's happening here

  141. is that our passage begins with this brief,

  142. yet tremendously important interaction

  143. between David and the elders of Israel.

  144. The elders of Israel recognized that

  145. even during the reign of Saul,

  146. it was David who led out Israel in battle

  147. and brought them back in in battle.

  148. It was David who had the real Lord's anointing,

  149. even during the reign of Saul.

  150. But this introduced a problem, you see,

  151. both the problem of succession

  152. and now a problem of geography.

  153. The elders want to go over to the side of David,

  154. but his kingdom is way down here in the south.

  155. How is he supposed to rule over these northern tribes

  156. if he's all the way down south?

  157. He needs to get up and move.

  158. The most strategic city for ruling over

  159. this entire kingdom of Israel

  160. had to be a centrally located, well-fortified city.

  161. Ah, but there was a problem.

  162. For precisely such a city existed

  163. and unfortunately it was inhabited by enemies.

  164. Don't you hate when that happens?

  165. This city, city of the Jebusites,

  166. existed right in the heart of Israelite territory

  167. in a city surrounded by mountains

  168. and difficult to lay siege to.

  169. A city so well defended and so fortified

  170. that none of the previous conquests

  171. were able to dislodge its inhabitants

  172. who were called Jebusites.

  173. Joshua 15, 63.

  174. Remember Joshua is, he comes in

  175. and he does the conquest over all of Israel

  176. or almost all of Israel.

  177. Joshua 15, 63 says that Judah

  178. could not dislodge the Jebusites

  179. who were living in Jerusalem.

  180. To this day, the Jebusites live there

  181. with the people of Judah.

  182. So they take over the whole area

  183. except this little citadel of the Jebusites.

  184. They stay surrounded by Israelites.

  185. Their presence there represented

  186. not only a threat to the safety

  187. of the Israelites in the area,

  188. but also the fact that God's promise

  189. to give that whole area to Israel

  190. was still unfulfilled.

  191. Now the people were united

  192. and that promise had to take a step forward.

  193. Unfulfilled until now.

  194. Let's keep reading and see what happens.

  195. And the king and his men

  196. went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites.

  197. Verse six.

  198. The inhabitants of the land

  199. who said to David,

  200. you will not come in here.

  201. The blind and the lame will ward you off.

  202. Thinking David can't come in here.

  203. Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion.

  204. That is the city of David.

  205. And David said on that day,

  206. whoever would strike the Jebusites,

  207. let him get up the water shaft

  208. to attack the lame and the blind

  209. who are hated by David's soul.

  210. Therefore it is said,

  211. the blind and the lame

  212. shall not come into the house.

  213. And David lived in the stronghold

  214. and called it the city of David.

  215. And David built the city all around

  216. from the millow inward.

  217. And David became greater and greater

  218. for the Lord, the God of hosts,

  219. was with him.

  220. I want you to see here

  221. that the Lord establishes his servant in Zion

  222. in keeping with his promise.

  223. In keeping with his promise.

  224. The promise was that he would give

  225. all of the land of Israel

  226. to the people of Israel.

  227. But they hadn't had this little bit yet.

  228. And insofar as it didn't have this little bit,

  229. the promise was still unfulfilled.

  230. So, David goes to take the city of the Jebusites.

  231. And indeed, David's triumph over Jerusalem

  232. is so swift that the narrator

  233. doesn't even give any lengthy account of the battle.

  234. Often you'll read verses and verses

  235. about how the battle went.

  236. These guys are smack talking

  237. and they don't even get a recounting of the battle.

  238. It's that decisive.

  239. We just know that David set a strategy.

  240. The strategy was quickly followed,

  241. precisely followed,

  242. and with devastating effect.

  243. Now, these passages here

  244. about the lame and the blind,

  245. they've vexed some.

  246. It seems that David really has it out

  247. for lame people and blind people.

  248. That's problematic, it seems.

  249. Let's see if we can give some explanation

  250. for what's going on here.

  251. Here's what I think is happening.

  252. I think what's happening here

  253. is that the Jebusites,

  254. emboldened by their generations

  255. of unbroken security,

  256. have gotten a little overconfident.

  257. And like a few cocky kids

  258. on a city basketball court

  259. who don't realize an NBA star

  260. is in their midst,

  261. they start smack talking David.

  262. The blind and the lame will ward you off.

  263. Which is something like

  264. the 11th century BC equivalent of

  265. you play ball like a girl.

  266. In response,

  267. David adopts the same language

  268. to describe the Jebusites,

  269. the lame and the blind,

  270. and he calls their bluff

  271. by soundly defeating them.

  272. So, it's not that David hates

  273. people with physical handicaps.

  274. He's just smack talking back

  275. to the Jebusites.

  276. Someone should write a theology

  277. of smack talking.

  278. I think it would be very interesting.

  279. You can read a lot of what Paul says

  280. about death

  281. as smack talking with death.

  282. Where is your victory?

  283. Where is your sting?

  284. Nana, Nana, Nana, Nana.

  285. You play ball like a girl.

  286. That's what Paul is saying to death.

  287. It's a beautiful thing.

  288. Can't get into that now.

  289. So, the promise that God made

  290. to Abraham to give his descendants

  291. this land is one step closer

  292. to fulfillment.

  293. David now makes his own abode

  294. in the fortress city

  295. that he just conquered,

  296. and his resounding victory

  297. attracts attention

  298. from his international neighbors.

  299. Let's keep reading here.

  300. Hiram, king of Tyre,

  301. sent messengers to David

  302. and cedar trees,

  303. also carpenters and masons

  304. who built David a house.

  305. And David knew

  306. the Lord had established him

  307. king over Israel

  308. and that he had exalted his kingdom

  309. for the sake of his people Israel.

  310. And David took more concubines

  311. and wives from Jerusalem

  312. after he came from Hebron

  313. and more sons and daughters

  314. were born to David.

  315. And these are the names of those

  316. who were born to him in Jerusalem.

  317. Shemua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

  318. Ibar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,

  319. Elishema, Eliada, and Eliphelet.

  320. David now controls

  321. a strategic fortress city.

  322. And he's demonstrated his ability

  323. to wage war against those

  324. who stand in his way.

  325. But we see here

  326. the Lord establishes his servant

  327. in Zion for the joy of the nations,

  328. the joy of the nations around him.

  329. The king of Tyre, you see,

  330. in Lebanon,

  331. wisely decides to make peace

  332. with the man of David's stature

  333. and strength.

  334. And this peace is solidified

  335. by the king of Tyre,

  336. bringing the wealth

  337. and riches of his country

  338. into the service of David.

  339. This is the third mention

  340. in this text

  341. of the fact that the Lord

  342. was with David.

  343. It was becoming more

  344. and more evident.

  345. The Lord is on David's side

  346. and everyone is realizing it.

  347. However, there is a dark shadow

  348. in this particular section as well.

  349. Another way that David

  350. will attempt to make

  351. his own power known

  352. is by taking lots and lots

  353. of foreign wives,

  354. which was a natural thing

  355. for a leader of the time to do

  356. to make alliances

  357. and sort of keep his fingers

  358. in the alliances

  359. in the countries around him.

  360. But it's also something

  361. that Deuteronomy explicitly

  362. prohibits the king from doing.

  363. The king shall not acquire

  364. many wives for himself,

  365. lest his heart be turned away.

  366. Deuteronomy 17, 17.

  367. This would be a problem

  368. for David's reign.

  369. Notice that one of the sons

  370. here is Solomon

  371. and all of David's sinful scheming

  372. surrounding his taking

  373. of Bathsheba, Solomon's mother,

  374. is skipped over here

  375. in this story.

  376. It's going to be a problem

  377. that he takes these wives,

  378. but the greater problem

  379. will be for David's son Solomon,

  380. who follows in his father's footsteps

  381. and comes to ruin because of it.

  382. Following your father's footsteps

  383. and you come to ruin.

  384. It's a bad fatherly example.

  385. Nevertheless,

  386. it is now beyond a doubt

  387. to all that would pay attention

  388. that David's is a kingdom

  389. that is anointed by God,

  390. even though it still has

  391. the sinful shadow

  392. of having taken too many wives.

  393. However, there's still work to do

  394. in pacifying the land,

  395. which is the last portrait

  396. provided to us in our story.

  397. And we'll turn there now.

  398. Verse 17.

  399. When the Philistines heard

  400. that David had been anointed

  401. king over Israel,

  402. all the Philistines went up

  403. to search for David.

  404. All the Philistines.

  405. But David heard of it

  406. and went down to the stronghold.

  407. Now the Philistines had come

  408. and spread out in the valley

  409. of Rephaim.

  410. This is right around Jerusalem,

  411. by the way.

  412. Did David inquire of the Lord,

  413. Shall I go up against the Philistines?

  414. Will you give them into my hand?

  415. And the Lord said to David,

  416. Go up,

  417. for I will certainly give

  418. the Philistines into your hand.

  419. And David came to Baal-Parazim

  420. and David defeated them there.

  421. And he said,

  422. The Lord has broken

  423. through my enemies

  424. before me like a breaking flood.

  425. Therefore the name of that place

  426. is called Baal-Parazim.

  427. And the Philistines

  428. left their idols there

  429. and David and his men

  430. carried them away.

  431. The Philistines came up yet again

  432. and spread out

  433. in the valley of Rephaim.

  434. Same place.

  435. When David inquired of the Lord,

  436. he said,

  437. You shall not go up.

  438. Go around their rear

  439. and come up against them

  440. opposite the balsam trees.

  441. And when you hear the sounds

  442. of marching the tops

  443. of the balsam trees,

  444. then rouse yourself.

  445. For then the Lord

  446. has gone out before you

  447. to strike down

  448. the army of the Philistines.

  449. And David did

  450. as the Lord commanded him

  451. and struck down the Philistines

  452. from Geba to Gezer.

  453. So then,

  454. the last way

  455. that we see the Lord

  456. establishes his servant in Zion,

  457. the Lord establishes

  458. his servant in Zion

  459. by defeating his enemies.

  460. The Lord establishes

  461. his servant in Zion

  462. by defeating his enemies.

  463. Now that David

  464. has captured

  465. the city of Jerusalem,

  466. he's in an important position

  467. to begin making

  468. military incursions

  469. against the Philistines

  470. who were just marauding

  471. across the northern parts

  472. of Israel

  473. whose leaders

  474. had just anointed

  475. David king over them.

  476. The Philistines

  477. were a seafaring people

  478. that came from

  479. the Mediterranean coast

  480. and they were coming in

  481. and they were waging war

  482. little by little

  483. against the tribes of Israel

  484. who had just signed

  485. their allegiance

  486. over to David.

  487. Now it's David's problem.

  488. And he goes

  489. to wage war against them.

  490. And he

  491. consults the Lord

  492. for his war plan

  493. and drives them out

  494. consistently.

  495. David's really,

  496. really good

  497. at killing Philistines.

  498. He's incredibly good at it.

  499. One of the strange things

  500. about David

  501. is when you read

  502. all these beautiful,

  503. romantic,

  504. glorious,

  505. emotive psalms,

  506. you should think of them

  507. as being written

  508. by a man

  509. with enormous biceps

  510. who probably can kill

  511. people with his hands

  512. in dozens of different ways.

  513. He's an incredibly

  514. complex figure.

  515. But notice what happens.

  516. In all of his war

  517. for and against

  518. the Philistines,

  519. the Lord is with

  520. David.

  521. The Lord is with David

  522. and the Lord being

  523. with David

  524. shows the Philistines

  525. and all those

  526. who are around

  527. who the true God is.

  528. Notice this insertion

  529. in verse 21.

  530. The Philistines

  531. left their idols there.

  532. Why?

  533. Why did they bring

  534. these idols?

  535. Presumably because

  536. they would support them

  537. in the war effort.

  538. Presumably because

  539. they would give them

  540. the victory.

  541. And as they were

  542. being routed,

  543. they quickly realized

  544. these aren't so important

  545. to us anymore.

  546. Let's leave them behind.

  547. And the Israelites

  548. captured the foreign gods

  549. showing that they are

  550. in fact nothing

  551. but sticks and stones.

  552. So then the conclusion

  553. of our passage,

  554. we see the Lord

  555. is with David

  556. in at least

  557. four different ways.

  558. And the Lord

  559. has established

  560. his servant

  561. in Zion.

  562. Now,

  563. now that we have

  564. a greater sense

  565. of what this passage

  566. is talking about,

  567. does it have anything

  568. for us

  569. beyond simply

  570. a fascinating

  571. and perhaps even

  572. encouraging

  573. history tale?

  574. I think it does.

  575. I think David

  576. himself

  577. thought so.

  578. Turn with me

  579. over to Psalm chapter 2.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  580. The second Psalm.

  581. I have said

  582. that this passage

  583. shows us

  584. God establishing

  585. his servant

  586. in Zion.

  587. Zion,

  588. Mount Zion,

  589. Jerusalem.

  590. Look what David

  591. says

  592. in Psalm 2,

  593. 6.

  594. As for me,

  595. speaking in the voice

  596. of God,

  597. I have set my king

  598. on Zion,

  599. my holy hill.

  600. So if you were

  601. to read this Psalm,

  602. you could immediately

  603. see a lot of parallels

  604. here.

  605. The Lord

  606. is protecting

  607. his people Israel

  608. against the nations

  609. all around them

  610. and the result

  611. of this

  612. is that he has

  613. placed his king

  614. on Zion,

  615. his holy hill.

  616. But as you

  617. continue reading,

  618. you see,

  619. for example,

  620. I will tell

  621. of the decree.

  622. The Lord said to me,

  623. you are my son,

  624. today I have begotten you.

  625. The ends of the earth

  626. shall be your possession,

  627. etc., etc.

  628. It goes on and on

  629. and quickly it becomes

  630. clear that if this is

  631. referring only and simply

  632. to David,

  633. it's a good bit

  634. of hyperbole.

  635. There seems to be

  636. something else

  637. going on here.

  638. And indeed,

  639. writers in the New Testament

  640. would see this Psalm

  641. as applying

  642. not only to David,

  643. but indeed even

  644. to Jesus.

  645. So then look at

  646. these points again

  647. in regard now

  648. not only

  649. to David,

  650. but to the Lord

  651. himself.

  652. The Lord

  653. establishes

  654. his servant

  655. in Zion

  656. at the head

  657. of a united people.

  658. David

  659. here stands

  660. in in some ways

  661. for our Messiah

  662. Christ.

  663. And just as

  664. David was the one

  665. who united

  666. the people of Israel

  667. around himself,

  668. so also

  669. Christ

  670. is the one

  671. who unites

  672. his people

  673. around himself.

  674. There were perhaps

  675. other Messiahs

  676. that we have

  677. sought after

  678. and chased after

  679. in previous lives,

  680. Saul,

  681. but these failed us.

  682. They didn't give us

  683. the security we desired,

  684. the satisfaction.

  685. They didn't unite

  686. our hearts together

  687. both with him

  688. and each other.

  689. They failed us.

  690. But this Messiah

  691. Christ

  692. is different.

  693. Like David

  694. leading

  695. the united tribes

  696. of Israel

  697. and Judah,

  698. so also Christ

  699. leads his

  700. united people.

  701. When Christ

  702. calls people

  703. to him,

  704. he calls them

  705. not only

  706. as individuals

  707. to him

  708. directly,

  709. but also

  710. to each other.

  711. We are,

  712. he says,

  713. a priesthood.

  714. We are

  715. a people.

  716. We're not just

  717. individual people.

  718. We are

  719. a people.

  720. The Lord's

  721. anointed

  722. who sits

  723. enthroned

  724. in Zion

  725. is at the

  726. head

  727. of a

  728. united

  729. people.

  730. And secondly,

  731. the Lord

  732. establishes

  733. his servant

  734. in Zion

  735. in keeping

  736. with the

  737. promise.

  738. He promised

  739. that he would

  740. give them

  741. Jerusalem.

  742. But then,

  743. in the book

  744. of Hebrews,

  745. you see this

  746. strange thing

  747. happening.

  748. The strange

  749. thing happening

  750. is the writer

  751. of Hebrews

  752. holds forth

  753. a vision

  754. of rest

  755. that is still

  756. to come

  757. and he makes

  758. this argument.

  759. He says,

  760. if Joshua

  761. in the

  762. conquest of

  763. Canaan

  764. had given

  765. them the

  766. rest they

  767. desired,

  768. the fullest

  769. rest,

  770. they would

  771. not have

  772. spoken of

  773. a rest

  774. that was

  775. yet to

  776. come.

  777. But even

  778. when the

  779. people of

  780. God conquer

  781. the land

  782. of Israel,

  783. they are not

  784. finally at

  785. rest.

  786. We know

  787. 500 years

  788. later they'll

  789. be kicked

  790. out,

  791. they'll be

  792. sent into

  793. exile.

  794. We know

  795. a thousand

  796. years later

  797. after that

  798. they'll be

  799. kicked out

  800. again by

  801. the Romans,

  802. this time

  803. with the

  804. king's

  805. palace and

  806. the temple

  807. smashed into

  808. pieces.

  809. This was

  810. not the

  811. final rest

  812. that God

  813. had promised.

  814. But when

  815. Christ,

  816. the better

  817. and new

  818. David came,

  819. he brought

  820. with him

  821. a more

  822. glorious

  823. peace.

  824. A full

  825. kingdom

  826. where no

  827. citadels of

  828. the enemy

  829. yet remain.

  830. And his

  831. kingdom is

  832. not only from

  833. the Mediterranean

  834. to the

  835. Jordan,

  836. his kingdom

  837. is from

  838. sea to

  839. sea to

  840. sea,

  841. from north

  842. to south,

  843. from east

  844. to west,

  845. all over

  846. the world.

  847. This is

  848. the kingdom

  849. of which

  850. Christ is

  851. a king.

  852. This is

  853. the promise

  854. of rest

  855. that was

  856. promised to

  857. the people

  858. of Israel,

  859. to Abraham,

  860. and indeed

  861. to us.

  862. In the book

  863. of Romans,

  864. Paul,

  865. the writer

  866. of Romans,

  867. will say

  868. the promise

  869. made to

  870. Abraham

  871. was that

  872. he and

  873. his heirs

  874. would be

  875. heirs of

  876. the entire

  877. world.

  878. The entire

  879. world.

  880. So this

  881. land promise

  882. back in the

  883. Old Testament

  884. was not the

  885. final chapter

  886. in the story.

  887. God was

  888. preparing for

  889. them a

  890. better rest,

  891. a greater

  892. promise

  893. in Christ.

  894. Christ.

  895. Again,

  896. the Lord

  897. establishes

  898. his servant

  899. in Zion

  900. for the

  901. joy of

  902. the nations.

  903. We see

  904. here the

  905. king of

  906. Tyre coming

  907. to try to

  908. support David

  909. perhaps a

  910. little bit

  911. out of

  912. fear.

  913. Think of

  914. the ways

  915. in which

  916. this truth

  917. that Christ

  918. enthroned

  919. in Zion

  920. is for

  921. the joy

  922. of the

  923. nations.

  924. Not only

  925. for the

  926. joy of

  927. Israel,

  928. but yes,

  929. for the

  930. joy of

  931. every

  932. people group

  933. in the

  934. world.

  935. Consider,

  936. for example,

  937. Isaiah

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  938. chapter

  939. 60.

  940. You don't

  941. need to

  942. turn there.

  943. But mark

  944. it perhaps.

  945. Go ahead

  946. and have

  947. a look

  948. and see

  949. how

  950. international

  951. Zion

  952. is when

  953. the Messiah

  954. will come.

  955. The flocks

  956. of Kadar

  957. will come.

  958. The young

  959. camels

  960. of Midian

  961. and Ephah.

  962. Those

  963. from Sheba

  964. will come.

  965. He says,

  966. foreigners

  967. shall build

  968. up your

  969. walls and

  970. the kings

  971. will minister

  972. to you.

  973. Your gate

  974. will be

  975. opened

  976. continually

  977. day and

  978. night.

  979. They shall

  980. not be

  981. shut that

  982. people may

  983. bring to

  984. you the

  985. wealth of

  986. the nations

  987. and their

  988. kings led

  989. in procession.

  990. The

  991. enthronement

  992. of David

  993. was bad

  994. news for

  995. some of

  996. the foreigners

  997. around him.

  998. Indeed,

  999. for the

  1000. Philistines,

  1001. for example.

  1002. But the

  1003. enthronement

  1004. of Christ

  1005. in Zion

  1006. is good

  1007. news for

  1008. all those

  1009. that would

  1010. be in

  1011. Christ.

  1012. This

  1013. is a

  1014. better

  1015. promise,

  1016. the joy

  1017. of the

  1018. nations.

  1019. Do you

  1020. know,

  1021. like that

  1022. treaty

  1023. that

  1024. Hiram of

  1025. Tyre made

  1026. with

  1027. David,

  1028. that Christ

  1029. has prepared

  1030. a way for

  1031. us to

  1032. have peace

  1033. with this

  1034. newly

  1035. enthroned

  1036. king?

  1037. Indeed,

  1038. even better

  1039. than the

  1040. simply building

  1041. of a house

  1042. that Hiram of

  1043. Tyre does

  1044. for David,

  1045. Christ has

  1046. made a way

  1047. through his

  1048. blood for

  1049. us to be

  1050. brothers and

  1051. sisters of

  1052. Christ himself.

  1053. Co-heirs

  1054. with Christ

  1055. is a language

  1056. the New

  1057. Testament

  1058. uses.

  1059. So we

  1060. need not

  1061. fear if

  1062. we are in

  1063. Christ,

  1064. covered by

  1065. the blood

  1066. of Jesus,

  1067. that this

  1068. enthroned

  1069. king in

  1070. Zion will

  1071. turn on us

  1072. in his

  1073. wrath.

  1074. Oh,

  1075. indeed,

  1076. he is a

  1077. wrathful

  1078. king.

  1079. And we

  1080. will see

  1081. in this

  1082. last

  1083. segment,

  1084. again,

  1085. that he

  1086. triumphs

  1087. over his

  1088. enemies from

  1089. Zion.

  1090. And we

  1091. are indeed

  1092. his enemies

  1093. if he is a

  1094. king of

  1095. righteousness,

  1096. if he is a

  1097. king of

  1098. peace,

  1099. and we

  1100. find in

  1101. ourselves

  1102. inclinations

  1103. toward

  1104. unrighteousness,

  1105. a perverse

  1106. longing for

  1107. not peace.

  1108. Any good

  1109. king of

  1110. Zion must

  1111. wage war

  1112. against those

  1113. like David

  1114. did against

  1115. the

  1116. Philistines.

  1117. But while

  1118. David could

  1119. only kill

  1120. his opponents,

  1121. Christ can

  1122. redeem his

  1123. opponents.

  1124. Christ has

  1125. two ways of

  1126. triumphing over

  1127. his opponents.

  1128. Those who

  1129. will not bow

  1130. the knee

  1131. willingly to

  1132. him will

  1133. be defeated.

  1134. But those

  1135. who eagerly

  1136. and willingly

  1137. receive the

  1138. invitation that

  1139. he has

  1140. offered to

  1141. freely accept

  1142. the truth of

  1143. the gospel

  1144. are not

  1145. only made

  1146. citizens of

  1147. his kingdom

  1148. but are

  1149. adopted into

  1150. his family.

  1151. So do you

  1152. see then that

  1153. the enthronement

  1154. of this king

  1155. in Zion

  1156. is good news

  1157. for all of

  1158. those who

  1159. place their

  1160. trust and

  1161. their hope

  1162. in this king?

  1163. do this.

  1164. If you have

  1165. not done

  1166. this, do

  1167. this.

  1168. Flee from

  1169. your sin

  1170. to Christ.

  1171. Trust in

  1172. the work

  1173. that Christ

  1174. alone can

  1175. do and

  1176. has done

  1177. for you

  1178. on the

  1179. cross.

  1180. Make peace

  1181. with this

  1182. newly

  1183. enthroned

  1184. king of

  1185. Zion

  1186. and live

  1187. in a

  1188. glorious

  1189. kingdom

  1190. forever.

  1191. Otherwise,

  1192. the Lord

  1193. establishes

  1194. his servant

  1195. in Zion

  1196. by defeating

  1197. his enemies

  1198. and you

  1199. will be

  1200. such an

  1201. enemy.

  1202. Make peace

  1203. with him

  1204. while time

  1205. yet remains.

  1206. Flee to

  1207. the king

  1208. of Zion

  1209. who is

  1210. newly

  1211. enthroned.

  1212. Amen.

  1213. Lord, I pray

  1214. now that you

  1215. would,

  1216. when we read

  1217. these stories

  1218. of David

  1219. and the

  1220. enthronement

  1221. of that king

  1222. in Zion

  1223. that we

  1224. would look

  1225. toward a

  1226. greater king,

  1227. a heavenly

  1228. king,

  1229. that reigns

  1230. over a

  1231. new

  1232. Jerusalem

  1233. that comes

  1234. down out

  1235. of heaven

  1236. made ready

  1237. for us.

  1238. We pray

  1239. that we

  1240. would make

  1241. our alliance

  1242. with him.

  1243. We thank

  1244. you that

  1245. you have

  1246. given us

  1247. a way

  1248. to peace

  1249. and righteousness

  1250. through the

  1251. blood of

  1252. Jesus,

  1253. this Davidic

  1254. king who

  1255. sacrificed

  1256. himself

  1257. for us

  1258. to make

  1259. us citizens,

  1260. to make

  1261. our standing

  1262. in the

  1263. heavenly

  1264. Zion

  1265. no less

  1266. secure

  1267. than Jesus'

  1268. standing

  1269. there is.

  1270. peace.

  1271. We thank

  1272. you that

  1273. you have

  1274. made a

  1275. way

  1276. of peace.

  1277. We thank

  1278. you that

  1279. you have

  1280. defeated

  1281. our enemies.

  1282. We pray

  1283. that we

  1284. would rejoice

  1285. in these

  1286. truths.

  1287. In the name

  1288. of Jesus

  1289. I pray.

  1290. Amen.
