  1. Well, our sermon text this morning is 1 Corinthians chapter 3, verses 1 through 9.

    1 Corinthians 3:1–9

  2. That's page 953 in the Pew Bible.

  3. Let me invite you to turn there with me.

  4. Let me read our text for us.

  5. Paul writes to the church in Corinth.

  6. But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.

  7. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it.

  8. And even now, you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh.

  9. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?

  10. For when one says, I follow Paul, and another, I follow Apollos, are you not being merely human?

  11. What then is Apollos?

  12. What is Paul?

  13. Servants.

  14. Through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each.

  15. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.

  16. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.

  17. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor.

  18. For we are God's fellow workers.

  19. You are God's field, God's building.

  20. Let's pray together.

  21. God, we acknowledge that our eyes are closed to spiritual things, to the things of you.

  22. Unless you, by your spirit, open our eyes for us.

  23. So God, we ask that you would do just that now, as we consider the message of this passage.

  24. That you would open blinded eyes.

  25. That you would soften hardened hearts.

  26. That you would awaken us from our sleep.

  27. So that we might see you in your son, Jesus Christ.

  28. And then we might turn from selfishness and waywardness and worship and trust you alone.

  29. Father, we pray this in the name of Jesus.

  30. Amen.

  31. Well, imagine with me a man named Phil.

  32. Phil has all the right theological books in his library.

  33. On a day like today, Reformation Sunday.

  34. Did you know that?

  35. It's Reformation Sunday.

  36. Is that actually right, John?

  37. Is today Reformation Sunday?

  38. I think it is.

  39. Well, Phil could show you a whole section devoted to the reformers in his library.

  40. Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, even Melanchthon, and Bucer.

  41. He's read and digested them all.

  42. It seems.

  43. And he's got a great stock of commentaries on every book of the Bible.

  44. Works from every period of the church.

  45. Phil really knows his stuff.

  46. Spiritually speaking, he looks like a pretty mature person.

  47. And then there's Wendy.

  48. Wendy loves her local church.

  49. After all, it's a growing, vibrant place.

  50. People are coming to know Christ.

  51. People care for and love each other.

  52. And she's there every Sunday.

  53. Singing from her heart.

  54. Taking notes on the sermon.

  55. Serving in children's ministry every few weeks.

  56. Heck, she even comes to the evening service sometimes.

  57. Wendy loves her church.

  58. Spiritually speaking, she looks like a pretty mature person.

  59. And of course, then there's Marcus.

  60. Marcus has an incredible conversion story.

  61. He was running headlong away from God.

  62. Worried about no one but himself and his own aspirations.

  63. Until one day, a friend invited him to church.

  64. It was a well-known church in a big city with a faithful, godly, well-known pastor.

  65. And over time, God's grace got a hold of Marcus.

  66. Pretty soon, everyone could see the difference.

  67. He had stopped chasing success and fame.

  68. And now he was humbly pursuing Christ.

  69. That was a number of years ago now.

  70. And Marcus's job has taken him to another city.

  71. But he's still following Jesus.

  72. He's still running the race after Christ.

  73. Spiritually speaking, he too looks like a pretty mature person.

  74. But what would you say if I told you that in fact, each of these three Christians were still dangerously immature in their faith?

  75. What if I told you that they were still, to use the Apostle Paul's words in verse 1, infants in Christ?

  76. You'd probably wonder, how could that be?

  77. I mean, we'd love to have more Phil's and Wendy's and Marcus's in the church, wouldn't we?

  78. In fact, maybe you see yourself in one of them.

  79. Maybe some of the people you know are just like them.

  80. What could possibly be wrong with them?

  81. After all, aren't genuine conversion like Marcus and active fellowship in a local church like Wendy

  82. and an understanding of the faith?

  83. Like Phil, aren't these the telltale signs of growing healthy Christianity?

  84. What could possibly be wrong?

  85. It would utterly shock us to think that they could be dangerously immature.

  86. And you know, in the same way, that's probably how the Christians in Corinth felt.

  87. Shocked.

  88. When they first heard, read to them this section of Paul's letter.

  89. Six times in these four verses of chapter 3, these first four verses,

  90. Paul calls them more or less dangerously immature in Christ.

  91. But wait a second, some of them must be thinking,

  92. us?

  93. Infants in Christ?

  94. Us behaving in a merely human way?

  95. Us, not spiritual, but of the flesh?

  96. Paul, come on.

  97. That can't be.

  98. I mean, think of what we know about the church in Corinth.

  99. By the time Paul wrote this letter, the church at Corinth had been around for a number of years,

  100. probably five or more.

  101. And for the first year and a half, the apostle Paul himself was their pastor and teacher.

  102. And then after that, they had Apollos, who was known for being a great teacher in the early church.

  103. So these weren't some newly planted, half-baked in the faith Christians.

  104. They seemed to have a good foundation, and they'd been around for a while, relatively speaking.

  105. And on top of all that, we know that they were not lacking in any spiritual gift,

  106. as Paul himself said back in chapter 1, verse 7.

  107. In other words, the Holy Spirit was visibly active in their midst.

  108. What we might call today miraculous gifts were perhaps a regular thing for them.

  109. So here it seemed was an established, vibrant, and yes, we would say spiritual church.

  110. Seminary students from all around were dying to get their internship credits at Corinth.

  111. Corinth.

  112. Church growth magazines were always calling for interviews.

  113. Corinth was the it church.

  114. But Paul says,

  115. I could not even address you as spiritual people.

  116. You're so woefully, dangerously immature.

  117. So what did Paul see that the Corinthians didn't?

  118. Look at verse 3.

  119. Less than halfway into that verse, he says,

  120. For while there is still jealousy and strife among you,

  121. are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?

  122. There it is.

  123. Jealousy and strife.

  124. Or perhaps we could put it this way.

  125. Comparison and competition.

  126. What this text is telling us is that if our hearts are ruled by jealousy and strife,

  127. if they're riddled with comparison and competition,

  128. if our minds are constantly asking,

  129. where do I fit?

  130. Am I ahead or falling behind?

  131. How can I make myself look a little better?

  132. Then we are still, friends, infants in Christ.

  133. Then we're still living out of our old, fallen nature.

  134. And at the general level, that's certainly true.

  135. Jealousy and strife in any form are signs that we need to keep growing in our walk with Christ.

  136. But at Corinth,

  137. this comparison and competition took a specific form,

  138. a particular shape.

  139. Look at verse 4.

  140. For when one says,

  141. I follow Paul,

  142. and another,

  143. I follow Apollos,

  144. are you not being merely human?

  145. Now we've seen this problem in previous weeks,

  146. haven't we?

  147. The church in Corinth was becoming divided into factions

  148. based on which leader or teacher they identified with.

  149. And literally they were saying,

  150. not I follow Paul or Apollos,

  151. but literally I'm of Paul.

  152. I'm of Apollos.

  153. I belong to this or that leader.

  154. And that makes me something special.

  155. That makes me a cut above.

  156. And that kind of comparison,

  157. that kind of competition,

  158. Paul says,

  159. proved that they were still infants in Christ.

  160. Immature.

  161. Merely human.

  162. But is this a specific problem that we deal with today?

  163. I mean,

  164. maybe not in the same way, right?

  165. But it still crops up

  166. in some less obvious forms.

  167. Think about Phil with his great theological library.

  168. Of course,

  169. a deep understanding of the faith is a good thing.

  170. We should all strive to grow in our biblical knowledge.

  171. Remember the church in Acts?

  172. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching.

  173. And so should we.

  174. At one point in Israel's history,

  175. God even said through the prophet Hosea

  176. that my people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge.

  177. Growing in our understanding of the faith

  178. is incredibly important.

  179. But when Phil,

  180. with his great theological library,

  181. hears about some of the books

  182. that his fellow church members are reading,

  183. he sometimes can't help but look down his nose.

  184. And you should have seen his face

  185. when someone recommended he read a new devotional

  186. that just came out.

  187. Devotional?

  188. Really?

  189. He thought.

  190. That's a little beneath me.

  191. I mean,

  192. I'm reading Calvin's Institutes.

  193. Again.

  194. In the Latin.

  195. And in the French.

  196. I don't think I'll have time for your quaint devotional.

  197. But here's the thing.

  198. That devotional could have been full of the gospel.

  199. Full of Christ crucified.

  200. Phil wasn't rejecting it

  201. because it was full of errors or heresy.

  202. He was rejecting it because in his mind

  203. he only reads big important Christian books,

  204. the real theology.

  205. In other words,

  206. he had propped up his identity

  207. in the church

  208. among other Christians

  209. over against other Christians

  210. with his reading habits

  211. and preferences.

  212. And in so doing,

  213. he was setting himself over

  214. against his brothers and sisters in Christ.

  215. Just because they recommended something

  216. a little less weighty and academic.

  217. And just like Corinth,

  218. the church is divided.

  219. Or think about Wendy

  220. who loved her local church.

  221. That, of course,

  222. is a great thing.

  223. Healthy Christianity

  224. is always lived out

  225. in a concrete,

  226. face-to-face body of Christ

  227. that we call the local church.

  228. Again, remember the church in Acts.

  229. They devoted themselves

  230. to the fellowship.

  231. Not to the podcast.

  232. To the fellowship.

  233. But Wendy,

  234. while she's thrilled

  235. about her own church,

  236. she isn't so thrilled

  237. about the fact

  238. that there's a new church

  239. starting up in town.

  240. Some of her friends

  241. visited the other Sunday

  242. and they told her

  243. that the gospel

  244. was really clearly preached.

  245. Wendy even went

  246. and checked out their website.

  247. And there doesn't seem

  248. to be anything wrong

  249. with the church.

  250. But that just makes her

  251. all the more uneasy

  252. and upset.

  253. Because people should want

  254. to come to her church.

  255. church.

  256. Not some other place.

  257. She wants her church

  258. to grow,

  259. not theirs.

  260. She wants her place

  261. to be doing the exciting work

  262. and getting the new visitors

  263. and starting the new programs.

  264. Of course,

  265. she might not

  266. consciously admit

  267. to all that.

  268. But the pit in her stomach

  269. says it all the same.

  270. Wendy,

  271. without even thinking of it,

  272. had been comparing

  273. and competing

  274. with other believers.

  275. Pitting her own congregation

  276. against another one.

  277. Even though they both

  278. preach

  279. Christ crucified.

  280. Lastly,

  281. what about Marcus?

  282. In his new city,

  283. Marcus has been faithful

  284. to find a new church.

  285. But you know,

  286. he can't help

  287. always feeling

  288. a bit disappointed.

  289. The pastor of his old church

  290. always seemed to speak

  291. right to him.

  292. And in his new church,

  293. he has a harder time

  294. connecting with the sermons.

  295. In his old church,

  296. he had a great group of guys

  297. who discipled him.

  298. But now,

  299. these guys,

  300. they all seem to be

  301. in different stages

  302. of life than him.

  303. And he's not sure

  304. he has a lot to learn

  305. from them.

  306. Nothing seems to measure up

  307. to his old church.

  308. In fact,

  309. he still listens

  310. to the podcast

  311. from his old church

  312. on Saturday nights.

  313. But then every Sunday morning

  314. in his new church,

  315. he just feels more

  316. and more disappointed.

  317. So you see,

  318. friends,

  319. even if today,

  320. our churches

  321. might not be

  322. ripping into factions

  323. around specific leaders,

  324. we can still

  325. let that same

  326. spirit of comparison

  327. and competition

  328. creep in.

  329. Whether it's pride

  330. over which Christian authors

  331. we do or don't read,

  332. or jealousy

  333. over whose church

  334. is attracting

  335. the most new visitors,

  336. or disappointment

  337. over a new church

  338. that doesn't match

  339. the memories

  340. of an old one.

  341. And when we let

  342. these sorts of things

  343. grow,

  344. according to this passage,

  345. we're living like infants

  346. in Christ.

  347. In fact,

  348. Paul is so bold

  349. even to say

  350. that we're acting

  351. as if we're still

  352. of the flesh.

  353. Now that's really

  354. strong language.

  355. The flesh

  356. in the New Testament

  357. means our old,

  358. selfish,

  359. sinful,

  360. unredeemed nature.

  361. This text is saying

  362. that when we let

  363. that kind of

  364. jealousy and strife,

  365. this sort of comparison

  366. and competition

  367. creep in,

  368. it's as if we're living

  369. like we don't even

  370. know Christ

  371. at all.

  372. It's as if we're living

  373. like the Holy Spirit

  374. isn't living

  375. inside of us

  376. in any way.

  377. Now Paul clearly

  378. addresses them

  379. as believers,

  380. right?

  381. He calls them

  382. brothers and sisters.

  383. He says they're

  384. in Christ

  385. even if they are

  386. infants in Christ.

  387. In other words,

  388. he considers them

  389. to be Christians.

  390. But then he turns

  391. around and says

  392. they're of the flesh.

  393. So is Paul

  394. contradicting himself?

  395. Are they Christians

  396. or not?

  397. Well,

  398. I think in some sense

  399. that's the point

  400. he's trying to make.

  401. Paul's saying

  402. that when you

  403. and I

  404. as believers

  405. live like this,

  406. riddled with

  407. comparison and

  408. jealousy,

  409. caught up with

  410. strife and competition,

  411. it's like we're

  412. walking

  413. contradictions.

  414. Walking

  415. contradictions.

  416. We know Christ

  417. but we're not

  418. living like it.

  419. We have the spirit,

  420. we're a new creation

  421. but we're acting

  422. like mere humans,

  423. like our old

  424. sinful selves.

  425. God's.

  426. Now as an aside,

  427. some people have

  428. thought that in this

  429. passage Paul is

  430. teaching that there

  431. can be such a thing

  432. as a genuine

  433. Christian who

  434. never really

  435. pursues holiness

  436. and lives just

  437. like the world

  438. their whole life

  439. and yet will still

  440. be saved in the end.

  441. this was sometimes

  442. referred to

  443. as a carnal

  444. Christian

  445. as opposed to

  446. a spirit-filled

  447. Christian.

  448. Carnal being another

  449. way of translating

  450. of the flesh

  451. in our passage.

  452. But I think it's

  453. clear

  454. that Paul's

  455. actually

  456. not teaching

  457. that here.

  458. Isn't it?

  459. He's not trying

  460. to introduce

  461. two sort of

  462. categories of

  463. Christians here.

  464. No,

  465. he's saying

  466. there's one

  467. sort of Christian,

  468. the growing

  469. kind.

  470. And if you're

  471. not growing,

  472. something is

  473. horribly wrong.

  474. Beth and I

  475. just had

  476. an infant.

  477. And friends,

  478. if our infant

  479. never grew up

  480. and started

  481. eating solid

  482. foods,

  483. if Owen

  484. always hit

  485. himself in the

  486. face like he

  487. does now,

  488. if he always

  489. pooped his

  490. pants like he

  491. does now every

  492. two to three

  493. hours,

  494. friends,

  495. you wouldn't

  496. say,

  497. oh,

  498. that's just

  499. a normal

  500. human being.

  501. No,

  502. something would

  503. be dreadfully

  504. wrong.

  505. In fact,

  506. Paul will go

  507. on to say

  508. in 2 Corinthians

  509. that if you

  510. persist in

  511. blatant,

  512. unrepentant sin

  513. and disobedience,

  514. then perhaps

  515. your conversion

  516. wasn't genuine

  517. to begin with.

  518. Examine

  519. yourself,

  520. Paul will

  521. say in 2

  522. Corinthians 13

  523. 5.

  524. Examine

  525. yourself

  526. to see

  527. whether you

  528. are in

  529. the faith.

  530. But Paul's

  531. not quite

  532. there yet

  533. with the

  534. Corinthians.

  535. Here he's

  536. still addressing

  537. them as

  538. believers.

  539. He's still

  540. trying to

  541. jolt them

  542. awake to

  543. get them

  544. to grow

  545. up by

  546. helping

  547. them to

  548. see how

  549. contradictory

  550. their lives

  551. have become.

  552. Now,

  553. if we take

  554. a step

  555. back,

  556. it's worth

  557. asking,

  558. isn't it?

  559. Is all

  560. this really

  561. so bad

  562. as Paul

  563. makes it

  564. out to be?

  565. I mean,

  566. come on,

  567. the Corinthians

  568. haven't killed

  569. anybody.

  570. They're just

  571. squabbling

  572. and one-upping

  573. each other

  574. through their

  575. petty little

  576. factions.

  577. It's foolish,

  578. sure,

  579. but is Paul

  580. just a little

  581. overreactive

  582. here?

  583. I mean,

  584. who cares

  585. if I get a

  586. little jealous

  587. at the church

  588. across the

  589. street?

  590. And who cares

  591. if I look

  592. down my nose

  593. at those

  594. fluffy,

  595. foolish books

  596. that those

  597. people are

  598. reading over

  599. there?

  600. And who cares

  601. if I put

  602. my previous

  603. pastor on a

  604. pedestal that

  605. no one can

  606. reach?

  607. Does that

  608. really mean

  609. I'm a walking

  610. contradiction?

  611. Well,

  612. friends,

  613. if we take

  614. the gospel

  615. seriously,

  616. then the

  617. answer is

  618. yes.

  619. On the

  620. one hand,

  621. at the very

  622. basic level,

  623. these kinds

  624. of divisions

  625. in the church

  626. misrepresent

  627. the God

  628. who saved

  629. us.

  630. Amidst

  631. the three

  632. eternal

  633. persons of

  634. the Trinity,

  635. Father,

  636. Son,

  637. and Holy

  638. Spirit,

  639. there is

  640. perfect

  641. unity.

  642. So perfect

  643. that Christians

  644. believe not in

  645. three gods,

  646. but in one

  647. God,

  648. Father,

  649. Son,

  650. and Holy

  651. Spirit.

  652. And if the

  653. church is

  654. meant to be

  655. a reflection

  656. of the

  657. glory of

  658. the God

  659. who saved

  660. us,

  661. then that

  662. partly happens

  663. through reflecting

  664. God's

  665. supreme,

  666. beautiful,

  667. lovely

  668. unity.

  669. Divisions

  670. in the

  671. church are

  672. serious

  673. friends because

  674. they tell

  675. a lie

  676. to the

  677. watching

  678. world about

  679. who God

  680. is.

  681. God is

  682. not a

  683. God of

  684. strife

  685. and conflict,

  686. but a

  687. God of

  688. perfect

  689. unity.

  690. But pushing

  691. a little

  692. deeper,

  693. there's another

  694. reason why

  695. divisions are

  696. such a

  697. contradiction to

  698. the gospel.

  699. people.

  700. Because

  701. underneath all

  702. the jealousy,

  703. the strife,

  704. the comparison,

  705. the competition,

  706. what I'm

  707. doing in

  708. all that is

  709. putting my

  710. identity and

  711. my significance

  712. in a

  713. human person

  714. and in so

  715. doing trying

  716. to make

  717. much of

  718. myself.

  719. When the

  720. Corinthians

  721. said I'm

  722. of Paul or

  723. I'm of

  724. Apollos,

  725. don't you see

  726. what they were

  727. doing?

  728. They were

  729. getting their

  730. self-worth

  731. and their

  732. status from

  733. their attachment

  734. to those

  735. human leaders

  736. and they

  737. were trying

  738. in doing

  739. that to

  740. make themselves

  741. better than

  742. each other

  743. through some

  744. sort of

  745. connection to

  746. this or

  747. that popular

  748. teacher.

  749. And in

  750. the same

  751. way,

  752. when you

  753. are jealous

  754. or suspicious

  755. of another

  756. local church

  757. or ministry

  758. across town,

  759. when you

  760. only read

  761. certain books

  762. and not

  763. others,

  764. when you're

  765. unimpressed

  766. by your

  767. current church

  768. or even

  769. more generally,

  770. when you

  771. compare yourself

  772. to someone

  773. else in

  774. any way

  775. and when

  776. you see

  777. yourself as

  778. being in

  779. competition

  780. with them,

  781. then your

  782. focus

  783. and your

  784. praise

  785. is on

  786. you,

  787. is it

  788. not?

  789. how

  790. significant

  791. you are,

  792. how you

  793. can be

  794. better than

  795. someone else.

  796. You're

  797. consumed

  798. with

  799. yourself

  800. and whether

  801. you're

  802. succeeding

  803. and you

  804. feel great

  805. or whether

  806. you're failing

  807. and you feel

  808. horrible,

  809. you're still

  810. all about

  811. you.

  812. and when

  813. we do

  814. that,

  815. we've

  816. completely

  817. lost

  818. sight

  819. of the

  820. truth

  821. of the

  822. gospel

  823. because at

  824. the center

  825. of the

  826. gospel

  827. is not

  828. me

  829. and it's

  830. not you

  831. but Jesus

  832. Christ

  833. and him

  834. crucified.

  835. we preach

  836. Christ

  837. crucified,

  838. Paul said

  839. in chapter

  840. one.

  841. That's the

  842. central

  843. message of

  844. Christianity

  845. that we

  846. were so

  847. helpless

  848. and sinful

  849. that only

  850. the death

  851. of God's

  852. perfect

  853. beautiful

  854. son

  855. could save

  856. us.

  857. But at

  858. the same

  859. time,

  860. God loved

  861. us so

  862. much

  863. that he

  864. willingly

  865. gave his

  866. son

  867. and that

  868. the son

  869. willingly

  870. came to

  871. do just

  872. that,

  873. to die

  874. on the

  875. cross

  876. for the

  877. sins of

  878. absolutely

  879. everyone

  880. who will

  881. turn and

  882. trust in

  883. him.

  884. We

  885. bring

  886. him

  887. nothing

  888. no matter

  889. who

  890. we are

  891. and he

  892. gives us

  893. everything

  894. no matter

  895. who.

  896. we are.

  897. That's the

  898. good news

  899. of the

  900. gospel,

  901. friends.

  902. And when

  903. God by

  904. the Holy

  905. Spirit

  906. causes that

  907. reality to

  908. sink down

  909. into your

  910. heart,

  911. it will be

  912. the death

  913. knoll to

  914. all comparison

  915. and competition.

  916. Why?

  917. Because now

  918. instead of

  919. having to

  920. belong to

  921. this leader

  922. or that

  923. leader to

  924. prop yourself

  925. up with

  926. theological

  927. tomes,

  928. to get

  929. your

  930. significance

  931. or your

  932. worth,

  933. instead of

  934. needing to

  935. build yourself

  936. up and prop

  937. yourself up in

  938. this way or

  939. that way,

  940. you can rest

  941. on the great

  942. and glorious

  943. fact that

  944. now you

  945. belong to

  946. God.

  947. You're God's

  948. field,

  949. Paul says

  950. at the end

  951. of our text.

  952. Christ,

  953. you don't

  954. belong to

  955. Paul or

  956. Apollos,

  957. you don't

  958. even belong

  959. to yourself,

  960. whether you're

  961. a total success

  962. worldly speaking

  963. or a total

  964. failure.

  965. And the

  966. gospel were

  967. all the

  968. same.

  969. You belong

  970. to God.

  971. He defines

  972. you now.

  973. Just like

  974. Isaiah saw

  975. so many

  976. years ago

  977. that God

  978. would pour

  979. out his

  980. spirit and

  981. we would

  982. be writing

  983. on our

  984. hands,

  985. the Lord's

  986. and we

  987. would grow

  988. up like a

  989. field in

  990. the desert

  991. full of

  992. life and

  993. beauty.

  994. Verses

  995. five through

  996. nine,

  997. the end of

  998. our text

  999. are there

  1000. to give

  1001. us some

  1002. much needed

  1003. perspective.

  1004. Christian

  1005. leaders aren't

  1006. celebrities,

  1007. Paul says,

  1008. they're servants.

  1009. They're field

  1010. workers and

  1011. God has sent

  1012. them out each

  1013. with their own

  1014. task, each

  1015. in their own

  1016. time.

  1017. One plants,

  1018. one waters,

  1019. in and of

  1020. themselves,

  1021. they're nothing.

  1022. Ultimately, it's

  1023. only God who

  1024. gives the

  1025. growth.

  1026. And these

  1027. laborers,

  1028. they're on the

  1029. same team.

  1030. They're one.

  1031. They're fellow

  1032. workers.

  1033. Yes, they'll

  1034. receive their

  1035. individual wages

  1036. for the work

  1037. they've done,

  1038. but ultimately

  1039. they work

  1040. together in

  1041. the field that

  1042. belongs to

  1043. God.

  1044. Brief side

  1045. advertisement,

  1046. if you're

  1047. thinking about

  1048. going into

  1049. ministry,

  1050. this is the

  1051. calling,

  1052. not glamour.

  1053. Pick up your

  1054. shovel and

  1055. hit the

  1056. fields.

  1057. So friends,

  1058. if you're

  1059. tempted to

  1060. make too

  1061. much of a

  1062. Christian

  1063. leader,

  1064. to get your

  1065. significance

  1066. through your

  1067. connection to

  1068. them,

  1069. you need to

  1070. remember that

  1071. they're merely

  1072. servants,

  1073. they're farm

  1074. hands,

  1075. and it's

  1076. God who

  1077. gives the

  1078. growth.

  1079. pastors and

  1080. teachers are

  1081. means.

  1082. Be thankful

  1083. for their

  1084. faithful labors.

  1085. Yes,

  1086. honor them

  1087. appropriately.

  1088. Yes,

  1089. but don't

  1090. worship them.

  1091. And when we're

  1092. tempted to pit

  1093. my leader over

  1094. against your

  1095. leader,

  1096. or my local

  1097. church over

  1098. against that

  1099. local church,

  1100. or my campus

  1101. fellowship over

  1102. against your

  1103. campus fellowship,

  1104. or my favorite

  1105. Christian writer over

  1106. against your

  1107. favorite Christian

  1108. writers,

  1109. remember that

  1110. they're all

  1111. one.

  1112. Insofar as they

  1113. hold to the

  1114. biblical gospel,

  1115. they're all on

  1116. the same team.

  1117. Yes,

  1118. God will

  1119. ultimately hold

  1120. them accountable

  1121. individually,

  1122. but ultimately

  1123. they're all

  1124. playing their

  1125. part.

  1126. They're all

  1127. doing the

  1128. work God

  1129. assigned to

  1130. them.

  1131. And friends,

  1132. if we really

  1133. internalize this

  1134. vision,

  1135. it means that

  1136. we can be

  1137. genuinely

  1138. thankful

  1139. for the

  1140. plurality of

  1141. gospel-believing

  1142. churches in

  1143. New Haven,

  1144. we're not

  1145. competing,

  1146. we're cooperating.

  1147. We can

  1148. encourage each

  1149. other without

  1150. unhealthy

  1151. comparison,

  1152. as long as we

  1153. preach Christ

  1154. crucified,

  1155. we're on the

  1156. same team.

  1157. After all,

  1158. if we're really

  1159. going to see our

  1160. whole city and

  1161. our region reach

  1162. for Christ,

  1163. wouldn't you

  1164. agree that we'll

  1165. need God to

  1166. raise up a

  1167. lot more

  1168. sowers and

  1169. a lot more

  1170. waterers.

  1171. We'll need God

  1172. to raise up a

  1173. lot more

  1174. healthy local

  1175. churches.

  1176. And as you

  1177. think about your

  1178. own story in the

  1179. faith,

  1180. friend, be

  1181. thankful for the

  1182. teachers and

  1183. pastors you've

  1184. learned from in

  1185. the past.

  1186. Praise God for

  1187. them.

  1188. But don't use

  1189. them as the

  1190. gold standard

  1191. whereby you

  1192. negatively judge

  1193. all the teachers

  1194. in your life

  1195. right now or

  1196. in the future.

  1197. In God's

  1198. wisdom, one

  1199. sowed and

  1200. now by God's

  1201. same wisdom,

  1202. another is

  1203. watering.

  1204. Trust the

  1205. owner of the

  1206. garden that he

  1207. knows what he's

  1208. doing and that

  1209. his timing is

  1210. always perfect.

  1211. So friends, if

  1212. you see comparison

  1213. and competition

  1214. lurking in your

  1215. heart, if it's

  1216. coloring your

  1217. relationships, then

  1218. I hope you

  1219. listen to the

  1220. rebuke of this

  1221. passage because

  1222. that's what it

  1223. is.

  1224. And I hope

  1225. you'll set them

  1226. aside along

  1227. with the rest of

  1228. your old sinful

  1229. nature.

  1230. Stop living as a

  1231. walking contradiction

  1232. and start living

  1233. the beauty that

  1234. God has ushered

  1235. you into.

  1236. That you are a

  1237. part of his

  1238. field.

  1239. The one

  1240. awesome church

  1241. of God

  1242. that he bought

  1243. with his own

  1244. blood and that

  1245. he will see

  1246. forth into

  1247. glory.

  1248. Let's pray.

  1249. Amen.

  1250. God, we pray that

  1251. you would convict

  1252. us now of

  1253. these things in

  1254. our hearts.

  1255. Lord, we know

  1256. that we need

  1257. your Holy Spirit

  1258. to do that.

  1259. We're so quick

  1260. to excuse

  1261. ourselves otherwise.

  1262. So, Lord, would

  1263. you show us in

  1264. very practical

  1265. ways now how

  1266. we've been

  1267. comparing ourselves

  1268. to one another,

  1269. how we've been

  1270. competing in

  1271. ungodly ways

  1272. even in your

  1273. church.

  1274. church.

  1275. And, Lord, we

  1276. turn to the

  1277. work of Christ

  1278. for forgiveness.

  1279. We pray, God, that

  1280. we would have a

  1281. new sense that we

  1282. belong to you,

  1283. each and every

  1284. one of us,

  1285. that we're equal

  1286. before the cross,

  1287. that you love us

  1288. all, that you've

  1289. shed your blood for

  1290. everyone who

  1291. believes.

  1292. And, God, give us

  1293. a vision for

  1294. ministry in our

  1295. time that embraces

  1296. not just our own

  1297. little tribe, but

  1298. all those who

  1299. take the name of

  1300. Christ crucified.

  1301. And, would you

  1302. raise up in this

  1303. field of yours

  1304. many new plants,

  1305. many oaks of

  1306. righteousness,

  1307. many lush gardens,

  1308. many fruitful

  1309. trees.

  1310. God, would we

  1311. see in our day

  1312. great growth.

  1313. God, would we

  1314. not thank

  1315. ourselves or

  1316. exult in

  1317. ourselves because

  1318. of the work that

  1319. we've done, but

  1320. would we look to

  1321. you, God, and

  1322. praise you and

  1323. say that it's you

  1324. and you alone who

  1325. gives the growth.

  1326. Father, we pray

  1327. this in Jesus' name.

  1328. Amen.

  1329. Amen.

  1330. Amen.

  1331. Amen.

  1332. Amen.

  1333. Amen.

  1334. Amen.

  1335. Amen.

  1336. Amen.

  1337. Amen.

  1338. Amen.

  1339. Amen.

  1340. Amen.

  1341. Amen.

  1342. Amen.

  1343. Amen.

  1344. Amen.

  1345. Amen.

  1346. Amen.

  1347. Amen.

  1348. Amen.
