  1. Well, good evening everyone.

  2. How are you?

  3. It's a bad question to ask from up here.

  4. You can't really answer.

  5. I love the parable of the unforgiving servant.

  6. Parable of the unforgiving servant.

  7. It's one of my favorite parables.

  8. So it kind of goes like this.

  9. There's someone that owes a lot, a lot of money to someone very important.

  10. And someone very important drags the someone that owes bags and bags of gold and money to court.

  11. And the servant throws himself on the mercy of the court.

  12. And the important person forgives the entire debt.

  13. And the unforgiving servant walks out of there a free man.

  14. But then he encounters someone that he knows that owes him money.

  15. And instead of bags of gold, it's just a pittance, some small amount of money.

  16. And he chokes the man and demands repayment and wants to press full charges.

  17. And of course, the important man hears of this and gets very angry and throws the unforgiving servant into jail.

  18. And the reason I love this parable so much is because it's about sin.

  19. And it's about underestimating sin.

  20. It's about undervaluing the debt that we owe to God.

  21. And tonight we have a passage that's all about sin.

  22. We're going to be looking at 2 Samuel chapter 11.

    2 Samuel 11 chapter mention

  23. It's the famous passage about David and Bathsheba.

  24. A quick note, by the way.

  25. Next week's passage is chapter 12.

    Isaiah 12 chapter mention

  26. And that's where all the repentance happens.

  27. So this week we're not going to be talking too much about repentance.

  28. Of course, it's a very important subject and I would love to preach a whole sermon about it.

  29. So our passage is on page 262 in the Pew Bible if you want to follow along.

  30. And let me pray for us as we get started.

  31. Our Father in heaven, I simply pray that you would be here by your spirit tonight.

  32. That you would be at work in each one of our hearts.

  33. And that your word would accomplish what you have for it.

  34. In Jesus' name, amen.

  35. So as we approach the text tonight, I'd like us to keep in mind that David was not just an ordinary Israelite.

  36. He was God's anointed.

  37. He was specially chosen by God and called by God to a particular task.

  38. And he had several responsibilities as God's anointed and as the king.

  39. Such as to save the people from their enemies.

  40. And to protect the people.

  41. And to establish and uphold God's law in the land.

  42. And to judge the people.

  43. The kings back then, they would hear people's cases.

  44. And they would discern between people's arguments.

  45. And they would also execute justice.

  46. When David was faithful, the people were blessed.

  47. And when David was unfaithful, the people suffered.

  48. So David was also a representative of the people to God.

  49. Okay, so with that in mind, let's read this familiar passage.

  50. In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel.

  51. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Graba.

  52. But David remained at Jerusalem.

  53. It happened late one afternoon when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king's house.

  54. That he saw from the roof a woman bathing.

  55. And the woman was very beautiful.

  56. And David sent and inquired about the woman.

  57. And one said,

  58. Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

  59. So David sent messengers and took her.

  60. And she came to him.

  61. And he lay with her.

  62. Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.

  63. Then she returned to her house.

  64. And the woman conceived.

  65. And she sent and told David,

  66. I am pregnant.

  67. So David sent word to Joab,

  68. Send me Uriah the Hittite.

  69. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

  70. When Uriah came to him,

  71. David asked Joab,

  72. David asked how Joab was doing and how the people were doing and how the war was going.

  73. Then David said to Uriah,

  74. Go down to your house and wash your feet.

  75. And Uriah went out of the king's house and there followed him a present from the king.

  76. But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord and did not go down to the house.

  77. When they told David,

  78. Uriah did not go down to his house.

  79. David said to Uriah,

  80. Have you come?

  81. Have you?

  82. Have you not come from a journey?

  83. Why did you not go down to your house?

  84. Uriah said to David,

  85. The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths.

  86. And my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field.

  87. Shall I then go down to my house to eat and drink and to lie with my wife?

  88. As you live, as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.

  89. Then David said to Uriah,

  90. Remain here today also and tomorrow I will send you back.

  91. So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.

  92. And David invited him and he ate in his presence and drank so that he made him drunk.

  93. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord.

  94. And he did not go down to his house.

  95. In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

  96. In the letter he wrote,

  97. Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting and then draw back from him that he may be struck down and die.

  98. And as Joab was besieging the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew there were valiant men.

  99. And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab and some of the servants of David among the people.

  100. Uriah the Hittite also died.

  101. Then Joab sent and told David all the news about the fighting.

  102. And he instructed the messenger,

  103. When you have finished telling all the news about the fighting to the king,

  104. Then, if the king's anger rises and if he says to you,

  105. Why did you go so near the city to fight?

  106. Why did you not know that they would shoot from the wall?

  107. Who killed Abimelech, the son of Jerubbosheth?

  108. Did not a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall so that he died at Thebes?

  109. Why did you go so near the wall?

  110. Then you shall say,

  111. Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

  112. So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him to tell.

  113. And the messenger said to David,

  114. The men gained an advantage over us and came out against us in the field.

  115. But we drove them back to the entrance of the gate.

  116. Then the archer shot at your servant from the wall.

  117. Some of the king's servants are dead.

  118. And your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

  119. David said to the messenger,

  120. Thus shall you say to Joab,

  121. Do not let this matter displease you.

  122. For the sword devours now one and now another.

  123. Strengthen your attack against the city and overthrow it.

  124. And encourage him.

  125. When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead,

  126. She lamented over her husband.

  127. And when the morning was over,

  128. David sent and brought her to his house.

  129. And she became his wife and bore him a son.

  130. And the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.

  131. Or literally,

  132. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  133. Well, if the charges were brought against David,

  134. Here's how it might read.

  135. Stealing another man's wife.

  136. Committing adultery with her.

  137. Betraying a close friend.

  138. Murdering innocent men.

  139. Commanding other people to commit sin.

  140. And then belittling the whole thing as no big deal.

  141. And you know, when we read it, we say,

  142. Ah, these are the real sins.

  143. These are the big ones.

  144. Adultery and murder and plotting and scheming and lying and covering it up.

  145. And this is what, now we're talking.

  146. This is real sin.

  147. But I'd like us to take a closer look, a deeper look tonight.

  148. The first move of the heart in sin

  149. Is a dethroning of God.

  150. Off of his rightful position in our hearts.

  151. As our number one love.

  152. And enthroning ourselves.

  153. So to use familiar language from 2 Samuel,

  154. David has become a man after David's own heart.

  155. He has stopped loving God in this period of time.

  156. And is now living by a different set of values.

  157. All sin is vertical first before it's horizontal.

  158. And by that I mean all sin is sin against God first before it's horizontal.

  159. And that's an interesting thing to observe when we have a passage like this.

  160. Because it's all these sins as they come at us in the passage are horizontal sins.

  161. It's lust.

  162. He sees.

  163. He takes.

  164. It's adultery.

  165. It's pride.

  166. And now I have to cover it up.

  167. And all these things are happening against other people.

  168. But it's interesting if we look in chapter 12 and we see the way God responds.

  169. I'm just going to read a couple.

  170. I'm going to paraphrase a couple verses from chapter 12.

  171. And God says through Nathan,

  172. By what you have done, you have utterly scorned the Lord.

  173. And David says in Psalm 51, his famous Psalm of repentance, he says regarding the sin,

  174. Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.

  175. And I'd like us to see that not only for David, but for all of us, this is the dynamic of sin.

  176. This is how sin works.

  177. If we go back to the law, if we go back to what God wants from us, here's how Jesus puts it.

  178. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

  179. This is the first and great commandment.

  180. And a second is like it.

  181. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  182. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.

  183. In other words, we love God.

  184. We see his goodness.

  185. We see his, for Christians, we see his grace.

  186. We see his undeserved mercy and love for us.

  187. And then we turn to other people and we live out of that paradigm of love and grace.

  188. So all sin in its first instance is against God.

  189. And that's why I think that when we hear Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, when we hear Jesus say things like this,

  190. when he says, you say it's sin to commit adultery.

  191. I say it's sin to even look at a woman lustfully at all.

  192. You say it's sin to commit murder.

  193. I say it's sin to even be angry with your brother and call him a fool.

  194. Now, how is Jesus saying that?

  195. What is the dynamic?

  196. If you are in a state of heart to look at a woman and lust, you haven't done anything, but you've lusted.

  197. God has been dethroned off out of your heart in those times.

  198. You have taken God from his rightful place as king of your heart, love of your life.

  199. You've put him down and you've enthroned yourself.

  200. If that makes you a little uncomfortable, the ramifications of that are pretty dramatic.

  201. Because the core of the sin is that we've take the God of the universe who created everything out of nothing,

  202. who is all-powerful, all-knowing, infinite, eternal,

  203. on top of that gracious, loving, merciful, kind.

  204. And we have put him in a position subordinate to us.

  205. If I can put it that way.

  206. When you pull God down off of his throne and erect yourself,

  207. you are putting God in a subordinate position to you.

  208. And what I want to argue, what I want to try to get us to think about tonight,

  209. is that that sin is the sin.

  210. That's the root of it.

  211. That's the heart of sin right there.

  212. Then it blossoms into actual evil that we do.

  213. And I think that if we don't see that, we're on the path to undervaluing sin.

  214. We're on the path to being able to read a passage like we just read and go,

  215. that's not me because I don't go that far.

  216. And we know we're not supposed to say that.

  217. I know no one's sitting in this room.

  218. But deep in our hearts, we minimize the standard.

  219. It's an inclination of our heart to pull the standard down so that we squeak under it.

  220. But when we actually see the standard, that it's a heart issue,

  221. and that we all know what it's like to just turn our heads,

  222. and all of a sudden God's down off the throne.

  223. And when we do that,

  224. that's the root of sin.

  225. So I want to talk a few minutes about the consequences of sin.

  226. The consequences of sin.

  227. Here again, I think, so often what we look at is David's and Bathsheba's baby died,

  228. okay, as a result of this.

  229. David's whole career now takes a turn for the worse.

  230. David starts making other mistakes, sinful errors.

  231. He begins, his rule begins to spiral down.

  232. God has, as we'll see next week in chapter 12,

  233. has responded by removing some of the blessings that he'd been giving to David

  234. and enacting some consequences for David that are temporal,

  235. that are in the here and now, as it were.

  236. In fact, as a result of David's sin,

  237. the people end up suffering.

  238. The people that David represents, they end up suffering

  239. because down the road, David starts making other bad choices and sinning.

  240. And further down the road, David's descendants,

  241. not too far after David, the wheels come off.

  242. And even though God had promised to bless David

  243. and set his steadfast covenant love on David

  244. and had promised that an heir of David would be on the throne forever,

  245. even though that promise was there in chapter 7,

  246. just three chapters later, four chapters later,

  247. we have this fall.

  248. And the descendants of David don't last long in their faithfulness to God.

  249. In fact, as we know, Israel ends up in exile.

  250. And there is not only no Davidic king on the throne,

  251. there's no king on the throne at all.

  252. The people are dispersed.

  253. Now, what I would like us to be careful about

  254. is that we do not view the temporal discipline of God on David

  255. as David paying for the sins that he committed in chapter 11.

  256. The temporal judgments of God

  257. are never payment for sin.

  258. The reason is because no temporal punishment

  259. can cover the sin of us dethroning God

  260. from his place as God of the universe.

  261. Us, created human beings,

  262. rising up in rebellion against God

  263. and putting him down.

  264. None of these temporal disciplines or punishments

  265. pay for that sin.

  266. Those sins are out there.

  267. God is infinite.

  268. The offense against God is infinite.

  269. The price to be paid,

  270. if it were to be paid by a person,

  271. could not be paid in space and time.

  272. And that's what hell is.

  273. Hell is us paying for our sins

  274. against God himself.

  275. And it never runs out

  276. because God is that holy.

  277. He is that

  278. majestic.

  279. However,

  280. David doesn't die.

  281. Nor does God revoke his covenant promises

  282. that he made back in chapter 7.

  283. I would like to suggest

  284. that when we're thinking rightly

  285. about God and who God is

  286. and when we're reading the Bible

  287. through the lens of seeing God properly,

  288. questions like,

  289. how is David survive this?

  290. Like,

  291. how is it

  292. that David

  293. goes on to be

  294. blessed by God,

  295. continued to be loved by God,

  296. established by God,

  297. forgiven by God?

  298. In other words,

  299. how is a good judge

  300. going to just pass over

  301. our offenses of sin against him?

  302. Well,

  303. the answer is

  304. that God himself

  305. has to come

  306. and become a man

  307. and pay for our sins

  308. by dying in our place

  309. himself.

  310. He is the only

  311. payment

  312. that will satisfy

  313. that kind of debt

  314. for David

  315. or for us

  316. or for any human being.

  317. And I'd like to go back

  318. and

  319. I've been trying

  320. to move along

  321. because I have

  322. several segments

  323. of scripture

  324. that I want to read to you

  325. and I'm just going to tell you up front.

  326. It's going to be

  327. a little bit of reading

  328. but I want to drop this on you.

  329. It's so beautiful.

  330. It is so

  331. as bad

  332. as the bad news

  333. of sin

  334. is.

  335. This is better.

  336. This is

  337. the good news.

  338. Okay.

  339. So God made a covenant

  340. promise to David

  341. to love him forever.

  342. When he made that promise

  343. he knew what he was getting into.

  344. He knew

  345. all of David's sin

  346. past,

  347. present,

  348. and future.

  349. He knew what was going to happen

  350. in chapter 11.

  351. And I want to read

  352. from

  353. Psalm

    Psalms 89 chapter mention

  354. chapter 89.

  355. You just listen along

  356. with me.

  357. It's about

  358. the covenant.

  359. God's covenant

  360. with David.

  361. I,

  362. God,

  363. will maintain

  364. my love

  365. to David

  366. forever.

  367. And my covenant

  368. with him

  369. will never fail.

  370. I will establish

  371. his line

  372. forever,

  373. his throne

  374. as long as the heavens

  375. endure.

  376. If his children

  377. forsake my law

  378. and do not walk

  379. according to my rules,

  380. if they violate

  381. my statutes

  382. and do not keep

  383. my commandments,

  384. then I will punish

  385. their transgressions

  386. with the rod

  387. and their iniquity

  388. with stripes.

  389. But

  390. I will not

  391. remove

  392. from him

  393. my steadfast

  394. love

  395. or be

  396. false

  397. to my

  398. faithfulness.

  399. I will not

  400. violate

  401. my covenant

  402. or alter

  403. the word

  404. that went

  405. forth from

  406. my lips.

  407. Once for all

  408. have I sworn

  409. by my holiness

  410. I will not

  411. lie to David.

  412. His offspring

  413. shall endure

  414. forever,

  415. his throne

  416. as long

  417. as the sun

  418. before me.

  419. Now,

  420. what I want

  421. to say

  422. is that

  423. when God

  424. says,

  425. if his

  426. offspring

  427. disobey

  428. my covenant

  429. and do not

  430. meet the terms

  431. of faithfulness

  432. that the covenant

  433. demands,

  434. I will discipline

  435. them.

  436. But as

  437. we've seen,

  438. what sin

  439. demands

  440. as a price

  441. is not

  442. temporal

  443. discipline.

  444. So God's

  445. talking about

  446. some other

  447. kind of

  448. discipline

  449. to some

  450. other

  451. son of

  452. David.

  453. Listen to

  454. this from

  455. Isaiah,

  456. about 300

  457. years later.

  458. It's Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  459. chapter 53.

  460. This is

  461. talking about

  462. Jesus.

  463. This is

  464. familiar,

  465. but it's

  466. so beautiful.

  467. Surely

  468. he has

  469. come to

  470. bore

  471. our

  472. griefs

  473. and

  474. carry

  475. our

  476. sorrows.

  477. Yet

  478. he was

  479. esteemed,

  480. yet we

  481. esteemed

  482. him

  483. stricken,

  484. smitten

  485. by God

  486. and afflicted.

  487. But he

  488. was pierced

  489. for our

  490. transgressions.

  491. He was

  492. crushed

  493. for our

  494. iniquities.

  495. Upon

  496. him

  497. was the

  498. chastisement

  499. that brought

  500. us

  501. peace.

  502. And with

  503. his wounds

  504. we are

  505. healed.

  506. All we

  507. like sheep

  508. have gone

  509. astray.

  510. We have

  511. turned

  512. everyone

  513. to his

  514. own way.

  515. And the

  516. Lord has

  517. laid on

  518. him the

  519. iniquity

  520. of us

  521. all.

  522. Jesus

  523. is the

  524. one that

  525. took

  526. the stripes

  527. of the

  528. rod of

  529. God's

  530. wrath

  531. against

  532. the sin

  533. of our

  534. unfaithfulness.

  535. We see

  536. that

  537. the promise

  538. to David

  539. is fulfilled

  540. in Jesus.

  541. I'm going

  542. to read a

  543. short

  544. passage

  545. from Luke.

  546. It's the

  547. angel Gabriel

  548. speaking to

  549. Mary.

  550. Behold,

  551. you will

  552. conceive in

  553. your womb

  554. and bear

  555. a son,

  556. and you

  557. shall call

  558. his name

  559. Jesus.

  560. He will

  561. be great,

  562. and he

  563. will be

  564. called the

  565. son of

  566. the most

  567. high.

  568. and the

  569. Lord God

  570. will give

  571. him the

  572. throne of

  573. his father

  574. David,

  575. and he

  576. will reign

  577. over the

  578. house of

  579. Jacob

  580. forever,

  581. and of

  582. his kingdom

  583. there will

  584. be no

  585. end.

  586. I think

  587. that if

  588. you're a

  589. Christian long

  590. enough,

  591. you begin

  592. to see

  593. how God

  594. is not

  595. just forgiving

  596. our sins.

  597. That's just

  598. the beginning

  599. of what

  600. God's

  601. doing.

  602. God is

  603. restoring

  604. us,

  605. renovating

  606. us.

  607. He is

  608. taking

  609. even our

  610. sins and

  611. turning them

  612. into things

  613. that he

  614. uses for

  615. his good

  616. purpose.

  617. And do

  618. you know

  619. that Jesus

  620. was a

  621. fulfillment

  622. of God's

  623. promise to

  624. David,

  625. God's

  626. love.

  627. And it

  628. came,

  629. and so

  630. Jesus,

  631. the line

  632. from David

  633. to Jesus

  634. includes

  635. Bathsheba,

  636. the very

  637. person that

  638. David went

  639. and stole

  640. and committed

  641. this horrible

  642. sin with.

  643. But through

  644. the fruit

  645. of David

  646. and Bathsheba

  647. comes the

  648. savior of

  649. the world.

  650. So we're

  651. not only

  652. forgiven,

  653. we're being

  654. restored.

  655. The bad

  656. things are

  657. being turned

  658. into good

  659. things.

  660. And I have

  661. one more

  662. passage to

  663. drop on

  664. you.

  665. Back to

  666. Isaiah

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  667. chapter 55.

  668. this is an

  669. invitation

  670. from God

  671. to us.

  672. Come all

  673. you who

  674. are thirsty,

  675. come to

  676. the waters.

  677. And you

  678. who have

  679. no money,

  680. come buy

  681. and eat.

  682. Come buy

  683. wine and

  684. milk without

  685. money and

  686. without cost.

  687. Why spend

  688. money on

  689. what is

  690. not bread

  691. and your

  692. labor on

  693. what does

  694. not satisfy?

  695. Listen,

  696. listen to

  697. me and

  698. eat what

  699. is good and

  700. you will

  701. delight in

  702. the richest

  703. affair.

  704. Give ear

  705. and come

  706. to me,

  707. listen,

  708. that you

  709. may live.

  710. I will

  711. make an

  712. everlasting

  713. covenant

  714. with you.

  715. My

  716. faithfulness,

  717. my faithful

  718. love promised

  719. to David.

  720. The same

  721. covenant

  722. love,

  723. that God

  724. set on

  725. David,

  726. we are

  727. all invited

  728. to

  729. partake

  730. of.

  731. And I

  732. want to

  733. add one

  734. more thing

  735. and then

  736. I'll close.

  737. When we

  738. see sin

  739. for what

  740. it is

  741. and when

  742. we see

  743. the magnitude

  744. of it,

  745. faith

  746. as a

  747. response,

  748. faith in

  749. Christ

  750. as our

  751. substitute

  752. becomes

  753. a

  754. joyful,

  755. wonderful,

  756. logical,

  757. reasonable

  758. thing to

  759. step into.

  760. When sin

  761. isn't sin,

  762. when sin

  763. is not

  764. an offense

  765. against the

  766. God of

  767. the universe

  768. by us,

  769. but it's

  770. just,

  771. oh,

  772. bad things

  773. we do,

  774. everyone's,

  775. no one's

  776. perfect.

  777. You know what,

  778. no one's

  779. perfect,

  780. you know how

  781. many people

  782. are probably

  783. going to hell

  784. right now

  785. because of

  786. no one's

  787. perfect?

  788. It's true,

  789. no one is

  790. perfect,

  791. but we

  792. need to

  793. see how

  794. bad sin

  795. is and

  796. let it

  797. drive us

  798. to Jesus

  799. and if we're

  800. already trusting

  801. in Jesus,

  802. we need to

  803. see how

  804. bad sin

  805. is and

  806. see what

  807. we're being

  808. saved from

  809. and let

  810. that grace

  811. grow in

  812. our estimation

  813. of it and

  814. let it

  815. fuel

  816. are

  817. living for

  818. God

  819. and a

  820. life of

  821. loving other

  822. people

  823. as we

  824. love

  825. ourselves.

  826. Let me

  827. pray for us.

  828. Our Father

  829. in Heaven,

  830. we pray that

  831. you would

  832. grant us

  833. eyes to

  834. see

  835. reality.

  836. We pray

  837. that you

  838. would not

  839. let us

  840. diminish

  841. the debt

  842. that our

  843. sin creates

  844. and Father

  845. we are so

  846. thankful

  847. and grateful

  848. that you

  849. came yourself

  850. to pay

  851. this debt

  852. for us.

  853. I pray that

  854. you would

  855. break our

  856. hearts.

  857. I pray that

  858. you would

  859. help us

  860. to love

  861. you

  862. in response

  863. and that

  864. you would

  865. help us

  866. to love

  867. other

  868. people.

  869. Thank you

  870. for your

  871. word.

  872. In Jesus'

  873. name,

  874. Amen.
