  1. Thank you.

  2. Thank you.

  3. Thank you.

  4. Thank you.

  5. Thank you.

  6. And though he had never met and knew nothing about any of these men, on this intuition he sent to 12 men the following telegram anonymously.

  7. Thank you.

  8. So let's not do that.

  9. What are you hiding?

  10. What are you hiding?

  11. Right now.

  12. Sitting politely and publicly in this congregation.

  13. What are you hiding?

  14. The knowledge of which would shame you.

  15. What is it that shames you even now to think of it in your mind?

  16. What?

  17. What grave and heinous sins have you done that you were not thinking of until this moment?

  18. And now what does your conscience say to you?

  19. Does it accuse you of some guilt?

  20. Does it tell you still to hide?

  21. To maintain a perfect posture to avoid all eye contact with anybody?

  22. With me?

  23. For fear of incriminating yourself?

  24. I have for you this evening horrifying news.

  25. All is discovered.

  26. The jig is up.

  27. You are found out.

  28. And if you let it.

  29. This discovery of your great evil will be to you a great mercy.

  30. On whether you will evade, deny, plead your own innocence, or instead confess, I am guilty, Lord have mercy.

  31. On that choice depends everything.

  32. In Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, after organizing the murder of one who stood in the way of her husband's ascent to the kingship,

  33. she's found sleepwalking, rubbing her hands together feverishly, incessantly, before she yells out in despair,

  34. Out, damned spot, out, I say.

  35. Who would have thought the old man to have so much blood in him?

  36. Will these hands never be clean?

  37. Here is the smell of blood still.

  38. All of the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand.

  39. The hand with which she murdered King Duncan.

  40. And if all the perfumes of Arabia could not conceal the blood of this one man,

  41. what, I beg you, will conceal the blood on your hands.

  42. Our text tonight will answer for you this question.

  43. But only if you let it.

  44. Only if you decide now, at this very moment, to permit this word from the Lord to read your soul.

  45. Will it have anything to say to that shame, guilt that you conceal so well?

  46. You must decide now, at this very moment, that the word of the Lord tonight is aimed directly at you.

  47. Forget for these moments a friend you came with, a neighbor to whom you are witnessing.

  48. This medicine will only heal you if you receive it.

  49. Our text for this evening is 2 Samuel chapter 12.

    2 Samuel 12 chapter mention

  50. Turn with me there, if you will.

  51. If you've been coming to these evening services now, you recognize the context.

  52. David is well ensconced in his throne in Jerusalem.

  53. And as his armies go out to war in the previous chapter, he sees a woman bathing on her rooftop.

  54. He knows her husband to be off at war, and therefore he invites her in.

  55. He sleeps with her.

  56. They have a child.

  57. He brings back her husband from war.

  58. Try to cover up his tracks.

  59. And when the husband won't do so, he has him killed.

  60. That's the context.

  61. And that brings us to our text this evening.

  62. We're focusing on verses 1 through 25.

  63. Let's read those together.

  64. 2 Samuel 12, verse 1.

    2 Samuel 12:1

  65. And the Lord sent Nathan to David.

  66. He came to him and said to him,

  67. There were two men in a certain city,

  68. the one rich and the other poor.

  69. The rich man had very many flocks and herds,

  70. but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb,

  71. which he had bought.

  72. And he brought it up.

  73. And it grew up with him and with his children.

  74. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms.

  75. And it was like a daughter to him.

  76. Now there came a traveler to the rich man,

  77. and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd

  78. to prepare for the guests who had come to him.

  79. But he took the poor man's lamb

  80. and prepared it for the man who had come to him.

  81. Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man.

  82. And he said to Nathan,

  83. As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die.

  84. And he shall restore the lamb fourfold,

  85. because he did this thing and because he had no pity.

  86. Nathan said to David,

  87. You are the man.

  88. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,

  89. I anointed you king over Israel,

  90. and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

  91. And I gave you your master's house

  92. and your master's wives into your arms

  93. and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah.

  94. And if this were too little,

  95. I would add to you as much more.

  96. Why have you despised the word of the Lord

  97. to do what is evil in his sight?

  98. You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword

  99. and have taken his wife to be your wife

  100. and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

  101. Now therefore,

  102. the sword shall never depart from your house

  103. because you have despised me

  104. and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite

  105. to be your wife.

  106. Thus says the Lord,

  107. behold, I will raise up evil against you

  108. out of your own house.

  109. And I will take your wives before your eyes

  110. and give them to your neighbor.

  111. And he shall lie with your wives

  112. in the sight of this son.

  113. For you did it secretly.

  114. But I will do this thing before all Israel

  115. and before the son.

  116. David said to Nathan,

  117. I have sinned against the Lord.

  118. And Nathan said to David,

  119. The Lord also has put away your sin.

  120. You shall not die.

  121. Nevertheless,

  122. because by this deed

  123. you have utterly scorned the Lord,

  124. the child who is born to you

  125. shall die.

  126. And Nathan went to his house.

  127. And the Lord afflicted the child

  128. that Uriah's wife bore to David

  129. and he became sick.

  130. David therefore sought God

  131. on behalf of the child.

  132. David fasted and went in

  133. and lay all night on the ground.

  134. And the elders of his house

  135. stood beside him

  136. to raise him from the ground,

  137. but he would not.

  138. Nor did he eat food with them.

  139. On the seventh day,

  140. the child died.

  141. And the servants of David

  142. were afraid to tell him

  143. that the child was dead.

  144. For they said,

  145. Behold,

  146. while the child was yet alive,

  147. we spoke to him

  148. and he did not listen to us.

  149. How then can we say to him

  150. the child is dead?

  151. He may do himself some harm.

  152. But when David saw

  153. that his servants

  154. were whispering together,

  155. David understood

  156. that the child was dead.

  157. And David said to his servants,

  158. Is the child dead?

  159. They said,

  160. He is dead.

  161. Then David arose

  162. from the earth

  163. and washed

  164. and anointed himself

  165. and changed his clothes.

  166. And he went

  167. into the house

  168. of the Lord

  169. and worshipped.

  170. He then went

  171. to his own house.

  172. And when he asked,

  173. they set food before him

  174. and he ate.

  175. Then his servants

  176. said to him,

  177. What is this thing

  178. that you have done?

  179. You fasted

  180. and wept for the child

  181. when he was alive,

  182. but when the child died,

  183. you arose and ate food.

  184. He said,

  185. While the child

  186. was still alive,

  187. I fasted and wept,

  188. for I said,

  189. Who knows

  190. whether the Lord

  191. will be gracious to me

  192. and the child may live.

  193. But now he's dead.

  194. Why should I fast?

  195. Can I bring him back again?

  196. I shall go to him,

  197. but he will not return

  198. to me.

  199. Then David comforted

  200. his wife,

  201. Bathsheba,

  202. and went into her

  203. and lay with her

  204. and she bore a son

  205. and he called his name

  206. Solomon.

  207. And the Lord loved him

  208. and sent a message

  209. by Nathan the prophet.

  210. So he called his name

  211. Jedidiah

  212. because of the Lord.

  213. This evening,

  214. I want to note

  215. two things together

  216. from this text.

  217. The first

  218. is that sin

  219. brings

  220. sure consequences

  221. and condemnation.

  222. Sin brings

  223. sure consequences

  224. and condemnation.

  225. Secondly,

  226. fleeing from sin

  227. brings

  228. sure

  229. consolation.

  230. Fleeing from sin

  231. brings

  232. sure consolation.

  233. First then,

  234. number one,

  235. sin

  236. brings

  237. sure consequences

  238. and condemnation.

  239. in chapter 11 the chapter previous to this one we see david comfortably ensconced on his jerusalem

  240. throne where instead of going out to fight battles on behalf of his people he sends others to do his

  241. bidding this is the operative word david sends six times in previous chapters he would go out

  242. and come in he would wage the wars but in this chapter he sends he has you see all the authority

  243. to move men and women around like pawns he sends this one and he sends that one and they go wherever

  244. he wills but in verse one of this passage in our chapter tonight we see there is another authority

  245. sending someone to david the lord sent nathan to david

  246. and with what tidings does nathan the prophet come but with a pressing legal question demanding

  247. immediate adjudication nathan tells a beautifully crafted story that could not help but appeal

  248. both to david's poetic soul after all this was the king who wrote all those glorious psalms

  249. and also to his kingly sense of justice and when presented with this heinous evil this rich man has

  250. done to this poor man david responds precisely as he should verse five his anger was greatly kindled

  251. against the men he said to nathan as the lord lives the man who has done this deserves to die and he

  252. shall restore the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and because he had no pity david's moral calculus

  253. is spot on in the abstract

  254. to this strange thought experiment david declares an unequivocal verdict

  255. condemnation

  256. and that's the right answer david knows his law david knows his law perfectly

  257. and in that perfect knowledge of the law he hides himself

  258. he hides himself even while he condemns himself without knowing

  259. he does not yet know that he has condemned himself until nathan delivers it to him straight

  260. you are the man

  261. you are the man

  262. you are the man who has trampled on the joys of those in your control

  263. you are the man that has abused your authority for murder

  264. you are the man that has stolen the precious possession of another simply to be your own plaything

  265. you david you are the man who must make restitution

  266. you are the man who must die

  267. you are the man

  268. and all at once

  269. david realizes that his sin is not concealed from god though it is concealed from every other person in the world

  270. and now he will die

  271. as saul died

  272. he has delivered the condemnation himself

  273. he deserves to die

  274. the kingdom must surely go to another

  275. sin brings sure condemnation

  276. david sees his sin for what it is

  277. for the first time

  278. not a simple lack of sexual self-control

  279. but the presumption that he the king can perform whatever he pleases with the pawns in his power

  280. he had ample wives to entertain himself

  281. this was not about that

  282. this was about him

  283. believing that he was the highest law of the land

  284. what did david lack

  285. that caused him to flee outside of god's direction for him

  286. several centuries later god will ask through his mouthpiece jeremiah

  287. what fault did your fathers find in me that they went far from me

  288. and it went after worthlessness

  289. and they became worthless

  290. and the answer here is simple

  291. david found no fault in god

  292. nathan opened up the royal histories

  293. and regales david with all the blessings that god had showered upon him

  294. like a very flood of grace

  295. i anointed you king over israel god says

  296. i delivered you out of the hand of saul

  297. i gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your arms

  298. and i gave you the house of israel of judah

  299. and if this were not enough

  300. i would add to you much more

  301. there was no fault in god's provision for david

  302. he simply looked grace right in the face and said

  303. i am bored with this

  304. david felt the smiling face of god upon his soul

  305. and said in response

  306. i do not love you

  307. as we sang in the song

  308. in the hymn just now

  309. i have sinned against thy grace

  310. and provoked thee

  311. to thy face

  312. and now death must ensue

  313. the sword shall never depart from your house

  314. says nathan

  315. prophesying about the civil war

  316. into which israel will soon be thrown

  317. after absalom's rebellion

  318. i will take your wives before your eyes

  319. and give them to your neighbor

  320. and he shall lie with your wives

  321. in the sight of the sun

  322. says nathan

  323. foreseeing that absalom

  324. david's rebellious son

  325. will soon drive david out of the city

  326. into hiding

  327. and he himself will go into the palace

  328. and sleep with all of david's concubines

  329. and wives

  330. in a tent

  331. on the roof

  332. of the palace

  333. in the sight of the sun

  334. for all of the sun

  335. and he has learned well

  336. from his father

  337. the sins of the fathers

  338. are visited upon the children

  339. the fathers have eaten sour grapes

  340. and the children's teeth

  341. are set on edge

  342. absalom

  343. looks just like his father

  344. and though david will escape this sin

  345. with his very life

  346. as we will see

  347. by only the pure grace of god

  348. he will lose the life of his son

  349. the heart of bathsheba will be shattered

  350. as her son dies

  351. the kingdom will shortly be thrown into disarray

  352. all because david did not apply to himself

  353. all his knowledge of the law

  354. he did not think

  355. it applied to him

  356. what then will we make of this

  357. will we do with david

  358. will you do with david

  359. what david did

  360. with this rich man

  361. and poor man

  362. will you think of this as a thought experiment

  363. or will you hear nathan's voice

  364. saying to you

  365. even now

  366. you

  367. are the man

  368. you have done this

  369. do you see yourself in david

  370. with that shameful sin you committed

  371. that i made you think of

  372. at the beginning of this sermon

  373. do you see yourself in david

  374. do you recall how your conscience

  375. speaks against you

  376. while you did that sin

  377. do you remember how you are recognized

  378. you recognize and admitted in the abstract

  379. that this is a sin

  380. but you somehow are exceptional

  381. doesn't apply to you

  382. you are not the man

  383. this is a mere thought experiment

  384. did you think you would not be found out

  385. sin this passage tells us

  386. brings sure consequences

  387. and certain condemnation

  388. and the harrowing thing about our text

  389. is that that condemnation

  390. and those consequences

  391. might fall on those around you

  392. more than they fall on you

  393. do you consider that those who pay the penalty

  394. for your sins

  395. may be your children

  396. your friends

  397. your parents

  398. while you get off with a minor sentence

  399. do you realize the very real possibility

  400. of leading a child of god astray

  401. you

  402. do you hear nathan saying

  403. that you

  404. you are the man

  405. you must hear it that way

  406. if you are to hear that sin

  407. brings consequences

  408. and condemnation

  409. i do not mean sin in the abstract

  410. i mean your sin

  411. brings consequences

  412. brings condemnation

  413. that's my first point

  414. of the evening

  415. sin brings sure consequences

  416. and condemnation

  417. secondly

  418. fleeing from sin

  419. brings sure

  420. consolation

  421. david

  422. knows himself

  423. to be found out

  424. the jig is up

  425. all is discovered

  426. he must flee

  427. he makes

  428. not a shade

  429. of an excuse

  430. plainly

  431. simply

  432. unequivocally

  433. he states

  434. i have sinned

  435. against the lord

  436. where

  437. first

  438. in nathan's story

  439. he may have said that

  440. such and such a man

  441. sinned against the lord

  442. now he says

  443. i have sinned

  444. against the lord

  445. and between those two

  446. is a world

  447. of difference

  448. between those two

  449. is

  450. the knowledge

  451. of the law

  452. the knowledge

  453. of what god demands

  454. the knowledge

  455. of sin

  456. the knowledge

  457. that i am a sinner

  458. the knowledge

  459. that i have sinned

  460. in fact

  461. in the 51st psalm

  462. that david writes

  463. after this whole affair

  464. he will confess

  465. to god

  466. that against you

  467. and you alone

  468. have i sinned

  469. you and you alone

  470. he's not trying

  471. to hide it

  472. and this

  473. i think

  474. is why david

  475. keeps his life

  476. while saul

  477. didn't

  478. this i think

  479. is why

  480. there is a note

  481. of consolation

  482. here

  483. in the middle

  484. of the consequences

  485. and calamities

  486. that are caused

  487. by sin

  488. there is still

  489. some consolation

  490. you david

  491. will not

  492. die

  493. the kingdom

  494. will not

  495. go to another

  496. it will remain

  497. with your house

  498. even though

  499. there will be

  500. a sword

  501. in your house

  502. so nathan

  503. can say to david

  504. a sword

  505. will never

  506. leave your house

  507. and still david

  508. can have another son

  509. and name him

  510. solomon

  511. which is derived

  512. from the hebrew word

  513. salem

  514. shalom

  515. peace

  516. the sword

  517. will never

  518. depart from your house

  519. and you shall

  520. name your son

  521. peace

  522. there is a note

  523. of consolation

  524. how

  525. does david

  526. have access

  527. to this

  528. consolation

  529. how might

  530. you have

  531. access

  532. to this

  533. consolation

  534. i have

  535. three

  536. suggestions

  537. for you

  538. first

  539. see yourself

  540. in the mirror

  541. of the word

  542. see yourself

  543. when the word

  544. comes to you

  545. condemningly

  546. see yourself

  547. when the bible

  548. says

  549. what can a man

  550. gain

  551. if he loses

  552. his soul

  553. ask yourself

  554. not in the

  555. abstract

  556. what can a

  557. president

  558. or world leader

  559. or senator

  560. gain

  561. if he gets

  562. the whole

  563. world

  564. but loses

  565. his soul

  566. ask yourself

  567. what can

  568. i gain

  569. if i gain

  570. the world

  571. and lose

  572. my own

  573. soul

  574. what does

  575. it profit

  576. me

  577. if i gain

  578. the world

  579. and lose

  580. my soul

  581. you must

  582. see yourself

  583. in the word

  584. the sin of the king

  585. is not hidden

  586. from the eyes

  587. of the lord

  588. he thought it

  589. was

  590. it wasn't

  591. the new

  592. testament

  593. says

  594. everything

  595. that is done

  596. in secret

  597. will be revealed

  598. on that day

  599. the lord

  600. is already

  601. keeping a catalog

  602. of every

  603. sin

  604. we've done

  605. all will be

  606. revealed

  607. everything is

  608. found out

  609. fully at once

  610. to receive

  611. some consolation

  612. you must

  613. not hear

  614. nathan

  615. saying only

  616. to david

  617. that he is

  618. the man

  619. you must

  620. instead hear

  621. that you

  622. are the man

  623. it is

  624. you

  625. to whom

  626. every

  627. command

  628. in scripture

  629. is addressed

  630. kirk

  631. guard

  632. soren kirk

  633. guard

  634. has a

  635. glorious

  636. sermon

  637. called

  638. what is

  639. required

  640. to see

  641. oneself

  642. in the

  643. mirror

  644. of the

  645. word

  646. and his

  647. second

  648. requirement

  649. is

  650. you must

  651. remember

  652. to say

  653. to yourself

  654. incessantly

  655. it is

  656. i to whom

  657. it is

  658. speaking

  659. it is

  660. i about

  661. whom

  662. it is

  663. speaking

  664. when you

  665. read the

  666. bible

  667. is it

  668. for you

  669. a set

  670. of morality

  671. tales

  672. about

  673. other

  674. people

  675. but is

  676. it

  677. reading

  678. your

  679. soul

  680. in order

  681. to receive

  682. the

  683. consolation

  684. that comes

  685. with fleeing

  686. from sin

  687. you must

  688. allow the

  689. word

  690. to read

  691. your

  692. soul

  693. charles

  694. spurgeon

  695. in a

  696. sermon

  697. called

  698. the special

  699. call

  700. and the

  701. unfailing

  702. result

  703. says this

  704. to repeat

  705. the old

  706. saying

  707. of john

  708. branford

  709. when he

  710. saw a

  711. cart full

  712. of men

  713. going off

  714. to tyburn

  715. to be

  716. hanged

  717. he said

  718. to himself

  719. there goes

  720. john

  721. branford

  722. me

  723. but for

  724. the grace

  725. of god

  726. when you

  727. see the

  728. swearer in

  729. the street

  730. or the

  731. drunkard

  732. rolling home

  733. at night

  734. there are

  735. you

  736. there am

  737. i

  738. but for

  739. the grace

  740. of god

  741. who am

  742. i and

  743. what should

  744. i have

  745. been if

  746. the lord

  747. in his

  748. mercy

  749. had not

  750. stopped

  751. me in

  752. my mad

  753. career

  754. i know

  755. there are

  756. some of

  757. us who

  758. can remember

  759. the old

  760. story of

  761. roland hill

  762. when a

  763. good scotchman

  764. called to

  765. see him

  766. and without

  767. saying a

  768. word sat

  769. still for

  770. some five

  771. minutes

  772. looking into

  773. the old

  774. gentleman's

  775. face

  776. roland hill

  777. is a

  778. is a

  779. preacher

  780. famous

  781. evangelical

  782. preacher

  783. advocate of

  784. the smallpox

  785. vaccination

  786. at last

  787. roland hill

  788. asked him

  789. what engaged

  790. his attention

  791. so much

  792. and the

  793. scotchman

  794. said to

  795. him

  796. i was

  797. looking at

  798. the lines

  799. of your

  800. face

  801. well what

  802. do you

  803. make of

  804. them

  805. i make

  806. of

  807. them

  808. this

  809. that if

  810. the grace

  811. of god

  812. had not

  813. been in

  814. you

  815. you would

  816. be the

  817. biggest

  818. scoundrel

  819. living

  820. spurgeon

  821. says and

  822. some of

  823. us feel

  824. just that

  825. that if

  826. it had not

  827. been for

  828. the grace

  829. of god

  830. we should

  831. have been

  832. out and

  833. out ring

  834. leaders in

  835. every kind

  836. of infamy

  837. and sin

  838. i know for

  839. myself i can

  840. never do

  841. things by

  842. halves

  843. if i had

  844. served bail

  845. i would

  846. have built

  847. him an

  848. altar and

  849. made victims

  850. smoke upon

  851. it day

  852. and night

  853. and if

  854. we serve

  855. god

  856. zealously

  857. and earnestly

  858. we have

  859. the more

  860. reason to

  861. be humble

  862. and to

  863. lay low

  864. in the

  865. dust

  866. for that

  867. very zeal

  868. of spirit

  869. would have

  870. been turned

  871. to the

  872. very worst

  873. account

  874. unless divine

  875. grace had

  876. been pleased

  877. to transform

  878. us

  879. do you

  880. recognize in

  881. yourself the

  882. possibility of

  883. great sin

  884. the reality

  885. of great

  886. sin

  887. and the

  888. possibility of

  889. even greater

  890. sin

  891. it is

  892. necessary

  893. before you

  894. receive

  895. consolation

  896. to hear

  897. this word

  898. to you

  899. secondly

  900. how can we

  901. receive

  902. consolation

  903. seek out

  904. a nathan

  905. seek out

  906. a nathan

  907. nathan

  908. you see

  909. has the

  910. king's

  911. ear

  912. and he

  913. comes into

  914. the king's

  915. court

  916. and the

  917. court and

  918. the king

  919. listens to

  920. him

  921. there is

  922. nothing that

  923. keeps david

  924. from killing

  925. nathan right

  926. there on the

  927. spot

  928. always revealed

  929. he can kill

  930. nathan right

  931. there

  932. he doesn't

  933. david

  934. had at least

  935. one person

  936. around him

  937. to whom he

  938. gave permission

  939. to be lovingly

  940. intrusive

  941. in his life

  942. david

  943. willed himself

  944. not to see

  945. his own sin

  946. and we

  947. are very

  948. liable to

  949. the same

  950. blindness

  951. therefore find

  952. for yourself

  953. a person

  954. several people

  955. perhaps

  956. who are to be

  957. lovingly intrusive

  958. in your life

  959. this is one of

  960. the functions

  961. of the local

  962. church

  963. you give to

  964. the people

  965. around you

  966. the permission

  967. to hold you

  968. accountable to

  969. the standards

  970. of the faith

  971. that you

  972. profess

  973. you have

  974. given them

  975. the opportunity

  976. to be lovingly

  977. intrusive

  978. in your life

  979. and the reason

  980. for this

  981. is that

  982. this word

  983. you are the

  984. man

  985. is a word

  986. of mercy

  987. if you will

  988. hear it

  989. before the

  990. judgment

  991. comes

  992. faithful

  993. says the

  994. proverbs

  995. are the

  996. wounds

  997. of a

  998. friend

  999. but the

  1000. kisses

  1001. of an

  1002. enemy

  1003. are deceitful

  1004. if all

  1005. the people

  1006. around you

  1007. are those

  1008. who flatter

  1009. you

  1010. beware

  1011. find some

  1012. at least

  1013. one

  1014. who will

  1015. say the

  1016. true things

  1017. to you

  1018. will hold

  1019. you accountable

  1020. to the

  1021. faith

  1022. you

  1023. profess

  1024. this

  1025. finding

  1026. for yourself

  1027. a Nathan

  1028. is required

  1029. for you

  1030. to feel

  1031. the consolation

  1032. that comes

  1033. from fleeing

  1034. from sin

  1035. thirdly

  1036. and finally

  1037. simply put

  1038. flee

  1039. in order

  1040. to feel

  1041. the consolation

  1042. to have

  1043. the consolation

  1044. that comes

  1045. from fleeing

  1046. from sin

  1047. you must

  1048. simply

  1049. flee

  1050. flee

  1051. from your

  1052. sin

  1053. flee

  1054. with everything

  1055. in you

  1056. from that

  1057. sin

  1058. do you

  1059. not know

  1060. that the

  1061. living God

  1062. the head

  1063. of the

  1064. armies

  1065. of heaven

  1066. has sworn

  1067. eternal

  1068. hatred

  1069. toward all

  1070. sin

  1071. and evil

  1072. in this

  1073. world

  1074. and he

  1075. is coming

  1076. revelation

  1077. 19

  1078. depicts him

  1079. like this

  1080. i saw

  1081. heaven

  1082. opened

  1083. and behold

  1084. a white

  1085. horse

  1086. the one

  1087. sitting

  1088. on it

  1089. is called

  1090. faithful

  1091. and true

  1092. and in

  1093. righteousness

  1094. he judges

  1095. and he

  1096. makes

  1097. war

  1098. his eyes

  1099. are like

  1100. a flame

  1101. of fire

  1102. and on

  1103. his head

  1104. are many

  1105. diadems

  1106. and he

  1107. has a

  1108. name

  1109. written

  1110. that no

  1111. one

  1112. knows

  1113. but himself

  1114. he is

  1115. clothed

  1116. in a

  1117. robe

  1118. dipped

  1119. in

  1120. blood

  1121. and the

  1122. name

  1123. by which

  1124. he is

  1125. called

  1126. is

  1127. the

  1128. word

  1129. of

  1130. god

  1131. do you

  1132. think

  1133. this is

  1134. jesus

  1135. do you

  1136. understand

  1137. this

  1138. making

  1139. war

  1140. robed

  1141. dipped

  1142. in

  1143. blood

  1144. this

  1145. is

  1146. jesus

  1147. and the

  1148. armies

  1149. of

  1150. heaven

  1151. arrayed

  1152. in

  1153. fine

  1154. linen

  1155. white

  1156. and

  1157. pure

  1158. were

  1159. following

  1160. him

  1161. on

  1162. white

  1163. horses

  1164. and

  1165. from

  1166. his

  1167. mouth

  1168. from

  1169. jesus

  1170. his

  1171. mouth

  1172. comes

  1173. a

  1174. sharp

  1175. sword

  1176. with

  1177. which

  1178. to

  1179. strike

  1180. down

  1181. the

  1182. nations

  1183. and

  1184. he

  1185. will

  1186. rule

  1187. them

  1188. with

  1189. a

  1190. rod

  1191. of

  1192. iron

  1193. he

  1194. will

  1195. tread

  1196. the

  1197. winepress

  1198. of

  1199. the

  1200. fury

  1201. of

  1202. the

  1203. wrath

  1204. of

  1205. god

  1206. the

  1207. almighty

  1208. on

  1209. his

  1210. robe

  1211. and

  1212. his

  1213. thigh

  1214. he

  1215. has

  1216. a

  1217. name

  1218. written

  1219. king

  1220. of

  1221. kings

  1222. and

  1223. lord

  1224. of

  1225. lords

  1226. god

  1227. jesus

  1228. has

  1229. pledged

  1230. holy

  1231. warfare

  1232. against

  1233. all

  1234. sin

  1235. and

  1236. he

  1237. has

  1238. with

  1239. him

  1240. all

  1241. of

  1242. the

  1243. armies

  1244. of

  1245. heaven

  1246. to

  1247. execute

  1248. his

  1249. wrath

  1250. on

  1251. that

  1252. sin

  1253. why

  1254. would

  1255. you

  1256. coddle

  1257. his

  1258. enemy

  1259. in

  1260. your

  1261. bosom

  1262. why

  1263. would

  1264. you

  1265. make

  1266. peace

  1267. with

  1268. the

  1269. very

  1270. thing

  1271. he

  1272. hates

  1273. do

  1274. not

  1275. dare

  1276. to

  1277. take

  1278. the

  1279. battlefield

  1280. with

  1281. the

  1282. forces

  1283. of

  1284. sin

  1285. against

  1286. the

  1287. armies

  1288. of

  1289. heaven

  1290. led

  1291. by

  1292. jesus

  1293. christ

  1294. himself

  1295. do

  1296. you

  1297. see

  1298. this

  1299. is

  1300. what

  1301. david

  1302. does

  1303. he

  1304. does

  1305. not

  1306. vacillate

  1307. he

  1308. openly

  1309. says

  1310. i

  1311. have

  1312. sinned

  1313. against

  1314. the

  1315. lord

  1316. i

  1317. am

  1318. the

  1319. guilty

  1320. one

  1321. i

  1322. am

  1323. the

  1324. man

  1325. who

  1326. has

  1327. done

  1328. this

  1329. i

  1330. will

  1331. not

  1332. coddle

  1333. the

  1334. sin

  1335. that

  1336. i

  1337. have

  1338. committed

  1339. i

  1340. will

  1341. separate

  1342. myself

  1343. from

  1344. it

  1345. i

  1346. realize

  1347. now

  1348. that

  1349. it

  1350. is

  1351. worthy

  1352. of

  1353. the

  1354. wrath

  1355. of

  1356. god

  1357. which

  1358. will

  1359. be

  1360. revealed

  1361. against

  1362. it

  1363. one

  1364. day

  1365. i

  1366. will

  1367. not

  1368. make

  1369. peace

  1370. with

  1371. it

  1372. i

  1373. will

  1374. flee

  1375. but

  1376. the

  1377. question

  1378. is

  1379. to

  1380. where

  1381. will

  1382. you

  1383. flee

  1384. david

  1385. has

  1386. no

  1387. immediate

  1388. refuge

  1389. except

  1390. simply

  1391. repentance

  1392. and the

  1393. amazing

  1394. thing

  1395. about

  1396. his

  1397. repentance

  1398. is that

  1399. as soon

  1400. as he

  1401. says

  1402. it

  1403. nathan

  1404. turns

  1405. to him

  1406. and says

  1407. the lord

  1408. has put

  1409. away

  1410. your

  1411. sin

  1412. you

  1413. shall

  1414. not

  1415. die

  1416. how can

  1417. the lord

  1418. put away

  1419. sin like

  1420. this

  1421. how can

  1422. he pass

  1423. over

  1424. sin

  1425. like

  1426. this

  1427. it's a

  1428. massive

  1429. theological

  1430. problem

  1431. for hundreds

  1432. of years

  1433. he has

  1434. sworn

  1435. warfare

  1436. against

  1437. those

  1438. who commit

  1439. this

  1440. sort

  1441. of

  1442. sin

  1443. and yet

  1444. he's

  1445. put

  1446. this

  1447. in

  1448. a

  1449. way

  1450. how

  1451. will

  1452. he

  1453. do

  1454. this

  1455. and the

  1456. christian

  1457. knows

  1458. that he

  1459. does

  1460. this

  1461. by

  1462. punishing

  1463. that

  1464. sin

  1465. in

  1466. his

  1467. own

  1468. body

  1469. on

  1470. the

  1471. cross

  1472. that

  1473. is

  1474. where

  1475. you

  1476. must

  1477. flee

  1478. if

  1479. you

  1480. would

  1481. escape

  1482. the

  1483. wrath

  1484. to

  1485. come

  1486. if

  1487. you

  1488. would

  1489. escape

  1490. the

  1491. sure

  1492. condemnation

  1493. that

  1494. comes

  1495. with

  1496. sin

  1497. and

  1498. receive

  1499. the

  1500. consolation

  1501. that

  1502. comes

  1503. from

  1504. fleeing

  1505. from

  1506. sin

  1507. to

  1508. Jesus

  1509. is

  1510. where

  1511. you

  1512. must

  1513. flee

  1514. look

  1515. to

  1516. the

  1517. cross

  1518. and

  1519. you

  1520. must

  1521. hear

  1522. both

  1523. of

  1524. these

  1525. words

  1526. of

  1527. Nathan

  1528. you

  1529. are

  1530. the

  1531. man

  1532. the

  1533. Lord

  1534. has

  1535. put

  1536. away

  1537. your

  1538. sin

  1539. you

  1540. will

  1541. not

  1542. die

  1543. this

  1544. is

  1545. the

  1546. message

  1547. the

  1548. cross

  1549. has

  1550. for

  1551. you

  1552. you

  1553. are

  1554. the

  1555. man

  1556. who

  1557. pinned

  1558. Jesus

  1559. to

  1560. the

  1561. cross

  1562. you

  1563. and

  1564. you

  1565. are

  1566. the

  1567. man

  1568. who

  1569. because

  1570. of

  1571. the

  1572. cross

  1573. will

  1574. not

  1575. die

  1576. you

  1577. and

  1578. that

  1579. consolation

  1580. can

  1581. only

  1582. apply

  1583. to

  1584. you

  1585. if

  1586. you

  1587. apply

  1588. also

  1589. that

  1590. condemnation

  1591. only

  1592. if

  1593. you

  1594. recognize

  1595. yourself

  1596. to

  1597. be

  1598. a

  1599. great

  1600. sinner

  1601. can

  1602. you

  1603. realize

  1604. yourself

  1605. to

  1606. be

  1607. a

  1608. recipient

  1609. of

  1610. great

  1611. grace

  1612. when

  1613. you

  1614. look

  1615. at

  1616. Jesus

  1617. on

  1618. the

  1619. cross

  1620. do

  1621. you

  1622. see

  1623. him

  1624. dying

  1625. for

  1626. your

  1627. sins

  1628. do

  1629. you

  1630. realize

  1631. it

  1632. was

  1633. for

  1634. you

  1635. he

  1636. did

  1637. this

  1638. for

  1639. you

  1640. he

  1641. loves

  1642. you

  1643. so

  1644. all

  1645. of

  1646. this

  1647. condemnation

  1648. is

  1649. washed

  1650. away

  1651. there

  1652. is

  1653. now

  1654. no

  1655. condemnation

  1656. to

  1657. those

  1658. who

  1659. are

  1660. in

  1661. Christ

  1662. Jesus

  1663. Romans

  1669. condemnation

  1670. you

  1671. shall

  1672. not

  1673. die

  1674. the

  1675. Lord

  1676. has

  1677. put

  1678. away

  1679. your

  1680. sin

  1681. yours

  1682. you

  1683. shall

  1684. not

  1685. die

  1686. Jesus

  1687. paid

  1688. it

  1689. all

  1690. all

  1691. to

  1692. him

  1693. I

  1694. owe

  1695. I

  1696. owe

  1697. all

  1698. sin

  1699. had

  1700. left

  1701. a

  1702. crimson

  1703. stain

  1704. he

  1705. washed

  1706. it

  1707. white

  1708. as

  1709. snow

  1710. the

  1711. blood

  1712. stain

  1713. of

  1714. Lady

  1715. Macbeth

  1716. that

  1717. could

  1718. not

  1719. be

  1720. stamped

  1721. out

  1722. by

  1723. all

  1724. of

  1725. the

  1726. perfumes

  1727. of

  1728. Arabia

  1729. sin

  1730. had

  1731. left

  1732. a

  1733. crimson

  1734. stain

  1735. Christ

  1736. washes

  1737. it

  1738. white

  1739. as

  1740. snow

  1741. Martin

  1742. Luther

  1743. would

  1744. say

  1745. often

  1746. that

  1747. the

  1748. devil

  1749. would

  1750. come

  1751. to

  1752. him

  1753. and

  1754. tempt

  1755. him

  1756. and

  1757. say

  1758. Martin

  1759. you

  1760. are

  1761. a

  1762. great

  1763. sinner

  1764. and

  1765. to

  1766. this

  1767. he

  1768. would

  1769. respond

  1770. I

  1771. yes

  1772. devil

  1773. but

  1774. Christ

  1775. came

  1776. to

  1777. save

  1778. great

  1779. sinners

  1780. and

  1781. therefore

  1782. you

  1783. are

  1784. defeated

  1785. with

  1786. your

  1787. own

  1788. weapon

  1789. do

  1790. you

  1791. see

  1792. that

  1793. the

  1794. consolation

  1795. of

  1796. salvation

  1797. comes

  1798. not

  1799. from

  1800. denying

  1801. that

  1802. you

  1803. are

  1804. the

  1805. man

  1806. who

  1807. is

  1808. sin

  1809. but

  1810. confessing

  1811. this

  1812. running

  1813. to the

  1814. bar

  1815. of

  1816. God's

  1817. mercy

  1818. saying

  1819. I

  1820. plead

  1821. guilty

  1822. be

  1823. merciful

  1824. to

  1825. me

  1826. and

  1827. Christ

  1828. will

  1829. say

  1830. to

  1831. you

  1832. your

  1833. sin

  1834. is

  1835. put

  1836. away

  1837. you

  1838. will

  1839. not

  1840. die

  1841. Jude

  1842. he

  1843. he's

  1844. given

  1845. you

  1846. a

  1847. hope

  1848. and

  1849. a

  1850. future

  1851. not

  1852. because

  1853. of

  1854. what

  1855. is

  1856. owed

  1857. to

  1858. you

  1859. but

  1860. because

  1861. of

  1862. what

  1863. is

  1864. owed

  1865. to

  1866. him

  1867. the

  1868. possibility

  1869. of

  1870. eternal

  1871. life

  1872. and

  1873. glory

  1874. forever

  1875. more

  1876. it's

  1877. yours

  1878. it's

  1879. yours

1880. if you let the word read your soul

1881. recognize yourself to be a sinner

  1882. flee to Christ

  1883. believe in him

1884. despair of any possibility you have

  1885. of earning your salvation

1886. through the work that you do

1887. and cling only to the goodness of Christ

1888. then you will hear the words

1889. your sin is put away

  1890. you shall not die

1891. then you can sing truly

  1892. Jesus paid it all

1893. all to him I owe

1894. sin had left a crimson stain

1895. but he washed my crimson stain

  1896. white as snow

  1897. let's pray

1898. I thank you for these words Lord

1899. I thank you for the way your word reads us

1900. I pray that you would apply your Holy Spirit

1901. to open up our souls and not be defensive

1902. but open up the wound

  1903. to the great physician

  1904. who will cut out

  1905. the tumor

1906. and replace it with health

1907. thank you Lord that you have given us

1908. the opportunity to hear from you

  1909. from you Lord

1910. your sin is put away

  1911. you shall not die

1912. I pray that we would revel in these things

  1913. this week

1914. that just as we hear from the Bible

  1915. that we are sinners

1916. we would hear in even greater tones

  1917. that we are forgiven

  1918. that we are redeemed

  1919. that I am saved

1920. that my sins put away

1921. that I shall not die

1922. because Christ died for me

1923. thank you for these glorious words

  1924. of consolation

  1925. and hope

  1926. and comfort Lord

1927. work them deep into our hearts

  1928. even tonight

1929. in the name of Jesus I pray

  1930. Amen

  1931. Amen
