  1. We'll be doing a series through this short book.

  2. As you're turning there, let me give a brief introduction.

  3. You might wonder, what does the Book of Ruth have to do with Advent and Christmas?

  4. Well, the Book of Ruth is set in a dark time,

  5. a time where ordinary people lived in fear of violent attacks,

  6. where once-stable family units broke apart,

  7. where refugees and immigrants struggled to survive in foreign lands,

  8. where cross-cultural relationships were marked by suspicion,

  9. where God's people endured their own depression and grief and loneliness

  10. and bore the burden of each other's depression and grief and loneliness.

  11. It is a world, of course, very much like ours.

  12. But in the midst of this dark and broken world,

  13. what we see in the Book of Ruth is God's merciful intervention

  14. on behalf of three otherwise unknown individuals,

  15. an elderly, embittered widow,

  16. a young, daring immigrant,

  17. and a successful, well-respected man.

  18. But God's provision for these three otherwise unknown individuals

  19. is part of a larger story of His provision for His people as a whole.

  20. We see God bringing life and hope to a broken family,

  21. and through this family we see God bringing life and hope to a broken people.

  22. The first words of the book,

  23. Ruth chapter 1 verse 1,

    Ruth 1:1

  24. are in the days when the judges ruled.

  25. The last word of the book is David.

  26. So what we see is through Naomi and Ruth and Boaz,

  27. these three people,

  28. God was establishing His kingdom in Israel.

  29. And as we look back on the story from 3,000 years later,

  30. we see that God was also preparing the way for Jesus the Messiah

  31. because Ruth and Boaz were ancestors not just of King David,

  32. but ultimately of King Jesus.

  33. And so we've entitled this Advent sermon series,

  34. Prelude to the King.

  35. Now to help you get the most out of this series,

  36. I want to recommend a book by Paul Miller called

  37. A Loving Life in a World of Broken Relationships.

  38. It's based on the book of Ruth.

  39. It has 23 short chapters,

  40. sort of reflections and meditations on the book of Ruth,

  41. walking slowly through it.

  42. So it's a great Advent devotional or sermon series companion.

  43. There are some copies on the back table.

  44. There are some copies on the book stall.

  45. If you order it on Amazon,

  46. you have to pay $8,

  47. but you can get it here for $5.

  48. And I think if you read it over the next few weeks,

  49. I think it can help you keep focused on what's really important

  50. in the midst of a season of the year

  51. that can easily become busy and distracting and stressful.

  52. So it's also available if you want it on Kindle or ebook or MP3.

  53. You can go online and buy it there.

  54. But it's called A Loving Life by Paul Miller.

  55. Anyway, so I highly recommend that.

  56. And you can pick one up afterwards if you're interested.

  57. All right, Ruth chapter 1.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  58. We are reading the whole chapter today.

  59. So let us read together.

  60. Ruth chapter 1.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  61. In the days when the judges ruled,

  62. there was a famine in the land,

  63. and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab,

  64. he and his wife and his two sons.

  65. The name of the man was Elimelech,

  66. and the name of his wife, Naomi,

  67. and the names of his two sons were Malon and Kilion.

  68. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah.

  69. They went into the country of Moab and remained there.

  70. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died,

  71. and she was left with her two sons.

  72. These took Moabite wives.

  73. The name of the one was Orpah,

  74. and the name of the other Ruth.

  75. They lived there about ten years,

  76. and both Malon and Kilion died,

  77. so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

  78. Then she arose with her daughters-in-law

  79. to return from the country of Moab,

  80. for she had heard in the fields of Moab

  81. that the Lord had visited his people and given them food.

  82. So she set out from the place where she was

  83. with her two daughters-in-law,

  84. and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

  85. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law,

  86. Go return, each of you, to her mother's house.

  87. May the Lord deal kindly with you

  88. as you have dealt with the dead and with me.

  89. The Lord grant that you may find rest,

  90. each of you, in the house of her husband.

  91. Then she kissed them,

  92. and they lifted up their voices and wept,

  93. and they said to her,

  94. No, we will return with you to your people.

  95. But Naomi said,

  96. Turn back, my daughters.

  97. Why will you go with me?

  98. Have I yet sons in my womb

  99. that they may become your husbands?

  100. Turn back, my daughters.

  101. Go your way,

  102. for I am too old to have a husband.

  103. If I should say I have hope,

  104. even if I should have a husband this night

  105. and should bear sons,

  106. would you therefore wait till they were grown?

  107. Would you therefore refrain from marrying?

  108. No, my daughters,

  109. for it is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake

  110. that the hand of the Lord has gone out against me.

  111. Then they lifted up their voices and wept again,

  112. and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law.

  113. But Ruth clung to her.

  114. And she said,

  115. See,

  116. your sister-in-law has gone back to her people

  117. and to her gods.

  118. Return after your sister-in-law.

  119. But Ruth said,

  120. Do not urge me to leave you

  121. or to return from following you.

  122. For where you go,

  123. I will go.

  124. And where you lodge,

  125. I will lodge.

  126. Your people shall be my people

  127. and your God,

  128. my God.

  129. Where you die,

  130. I will die.

  131. And there will I be buried.

  132. May the Lord do so to me

  133. and more also,

  134. if anything but death

  135. parts me from you.

  136. And when Naomi saw

  137. that she was determined

  138. to go with her,

  139. she said,

  140. No more.

  141. So the two of them went on

  142. until they came to Bethlehem.

  143. And when they came to Bethlehem,

  144. the whole town was stirred

  145. because of them.

  146. And the women said,

  147. Is this Naomi?

  148. She said to them,

  149. Do not call me Naomi.

  150. Call me Mara.

  151. For the Almighty has dealt

  152. very bitterly with me.

  153. I went away full

  154. and the Lord has brought me back,

  155. empty.

  156. Why call me Naomi

  157. when the Lord has testified against me

  158. and the Almighty has brought

  159. calamity upon me?

  160. So Naomi returned.

  161. And Ruth, the Moabite,

  162. her daughter-in-law with her

  163. who returned from the country of Moab.

  164. And they came to Bethlehem

  165. at the beginning

  166. of barley harvest.

  167. The book of Ruth begins

  168. in a dark time.

  169. In the days when the judges ruled,

  170. if you turn back one page

  171. to the end of the book of Judges,

  172. the last verse says,

  173. In those days,

  174. there was no king in Israel.

  175. Everyone did what was right

  176. in his own eyes.

  177. And the last five chapters of Judges

  178. describe a time of political

  179. and moral chaos.

  180. Chapter 17 begins

  181. with a young man

  182. who stole money from his mother

  183. and hired a superstitious priest

  184. who is motivated purely

  185. by financial gain.

  186. Chapter 18 describes violent gangs

  187. who preyed on unsuspecting people.

  188. Chapter 19 describes the brutal beating,

  189. rape, and murder

  190. of an innocent woman

  191. resulting in a brutal civil war,

  192. chapters 20 and 21.

  193. It was a dark time in Israel.

  194. The leaders were corrupt

  195. or non-existent.

  196. The nation was literally

  197. being torn apart.

  198. And so we come to the book of Ruth

  199. in the days when the judges ruled.

  200. There was a famine in the land.

  201. Now when the people of Israel

  202. prepared to enter the land of Canaan,

  203. God made promises to them

  204. that if they would obey his commands,

  205. he would bless them

  206. with fruitfulness and prosperity.

  207. But if they rejected his commands

  208. and persisted in unfaithfulness,

  209. God warned.

  210. Leviticus 26,

  211. I will make the heavens like iron

  212. and the earth like bronze.

  213. And your strength shall be spent in vain

  214. for the land shall not yield its increase.

  215. And the trees of the land

  216. shall not yield their fruit.

  217. You see, the famine

  218. was merely an outward sign

  219. that all was not well

  220. among the people of God.

  221. Ironically,

  222. the famine struck Bethlehem in particular.

  223. Some of the names in Ruth,

  224. we'll see as we go along,

  225. are important.

  226. Bethlehem means house of bread.

  227. It was a dark time in Israel

  228. when the house of bread had no bread.

  229. And what we see in verses 1 through 5

  230. is it was also a dark time

  231. for Naomi and her family.

  232. Because of the famine,

  233. Elimelech and his family

  234. left the promised land for Moab.

  235. The Moabites were Israel's pagan neighbors

  236. to the southeast.

  237. When the Israelites had tried

  238. to pass through Moab

  239. on their way to the promised land,

  240. the Moabite king opposed them,

  241. bribed Balaam to prophesy against them.

  242. When that didn't work,

  243. the women of Moab

  244. seduced many of the Israelite men.

  245. There was bad blood

  246. between Israel and Moab.

  247. And it sounds like not good news

  248. when the people of Israel

  249. are forced to take refuge in Moab

  250. in order to survive.

  251. But Elimelech's family

  252. didn't just sojourn in Moab.

  253. For a short time,

  254. it says, verse 2,

  255. they remained there.

  256. Verse 4,

  257. they lived there about 10 years.

  258. We see a similar pattern

  259. as back in Genesis

  260. with Abraham's nephew Lot.

  261. He first moved his tent

  262. near Sodom and Gomorrah,

  263. but pretty soon

  264. was dwelling in Sodom.

  265. And what we see here

  266. in this chapter

  267. is the people of God

  268. gradually losing

  269. their distinctive identity

  270. in the world,

  271. blending into the surrounding

  272. pagan world.

  273. Elimelech's name means

  274. my God is king.

  275. His son's names,

  276. Malon and Kilion,

  277. mean weak and frail.

  278. And what we see

  279. is that they assimilated

  280. not just to the Moabite culture,

  281. which would have been fine,

  282. but also to Moabite religion.

  283. The two sons took Moabite wives,

  284. verse 4,

  285. who presumably continued

  286. worshiping Moabite gods.

  287. Naomi didn't seem to care

  288. very much about that.

  289. Verse 15,

  290. Naomi makes an offhand comment.

  291. She says,

  292. your sister-in-law has gone back

  293. to her people and her gods.

  294. Now, like many offhand comments,

  295. it reveals some of where

  296. Naomi's heart was.

  297. And Naomi's heart was basically,

  298. well, she has her Moabite gods,

  299. I have my Israelite god,

  300. it's not really a big deal.

  301. Religion is mostly a function

  302. of culture and ethnicity,

  303. and she doesn't really care

  304. that much about it.

  305. So they leave the promised land,

  306. they begin to lose

  307. their distinctive identity

  308. as God's people in Moab,

  309. and finally the family

  310. literally starts dying off.

  311. First, Elimelech,

  312. my God is king,

  313. died.

  314. Then the two sons die,

  315. both of them childless.

  316. Naomi is now extremely vulnerable

  317. because in the ancient world,

  318. a woman's identity

  319. depended on

  320. her connection to a man

  321. and her legacy

  322. depended on the children

  323. that she bore.

  324. But for Naomi,

  325. she now had neither of those.

  326. She had no man to protect

  327. and provide for her,

  328. no child or grandchild

  329. to give her hope

  330. for a bright future.

  331. In the eyes of the world

  332. she lived in,

  333. and in her own eyes,

  334. Naomi had nothing.

  335. No security,

  336. no identity,

  337. no future,

  338. and no hope.

  339. Naomi was dying.

  340. Her life,

  341. her family,

  342. was falling apart

  343. just like the nation of Israel.

  344. Now maybe you can identify

  345. with Naomi

  346. in some way or another.

  347. Maybe you've come here

  348. from a foreign land.

  349. You feel misunderstood

  350. or ignored.

  351. Maybe it seems like

  352. no one will ever hire you

  353. for a decent job

  354. and you feel powerless.

  355. Maybe you're homeless

  356. and you cry yourself

  357. to sleep at night.

  358. Maybe you're married

  359. but it's not a happy marriage

  360. and the problems

  361. only seem to get worse.

  362. Maybe like Naomi,

  363. you're a widow

  364. or a widower

  365. and you feel an empty hole

  366. as you lay alone

  367. in bed every night.

  368. Maybe you've lost a spouse

  369. because they cheated on you

  370. or divorced you

  371. or abandoned you.

  372. Maybe you've always wanted

  373. to have kids

  374. but you're infertile

  375. or you haven't found

  376. a suitable person to marry.

  377. Maybe you've lost

  378. not just a spouse

  379. but a child.

  380. And it seems like

  381. the darkness haunts you

  382. and won't ever leave.

  383. It feels like nothing

  384. will ever really change.

  385. If that is you

  386. in one way or another,

  387. I pray that God

  388. will speak to you

  389. through this passage

  390. and through this book.

  391. If that's not you,

  392. if you're successful

  393. and secure,

  394. well-respected

  395. and well-off,

  396. there is also a message

  397. for you,

  398. particularly in the character

  399. of Boaz

  400. who we'll meet next week

  401. in chapter 2.

  402. But today I want to focus

  403. in on Naomi

  404. whose journey

  405. to Moab and back

  406. is the main storyline

  407. of chapter 1.

  408. And in today's passage,

  409. what we see,

  410. we see two ways

  411. that God extends

  412. his steadfast love

  413. toward us

  414. when our lives

  415. are falling apart.

  416. The first thing

  417. that we see

  418. is that God's kindness

  419. leads us

  420. to repentance.

  421. Verse 6,

  422. we see the first ray

  423. of hope

  424. for Naomi.

  425. She heard

  426. in the fields

  427. of Moab

  428. that the Lord

  429. had visited

  430. his people

  431. and given them food.

  432. The famine

  433. was over.

  434. Once more,

  435. there was bread

  436. in Bethlehem.

  437. And somehow,

  438. the good news

  439. of the Lord's

  440. undeserved kindness

  441. to his people

  442. found its way

  443. to her

  444. all the way

  445. in the far country

  446. of Moab.

  447. In the book of Ruth,

  448. there are only two verses

  449. that speak explicitly

  450. about God's action.

  451. One here at the beginning,

  452. another at the end.

  453. Here it says,

  454. the Lord visited

  455. his people

  456. and gave them food.

  457. Chapter 4,

  458. verse 13,

  459. it says,

  460. the Lord gave

  461. Ruth conception

  462. and she bore a son.

  463. And in both cases,

  464. what we see

  465. is the Lord

  466. provided in ways

  467. that no one

  468. could see at first.

  469. The seed began

  470. to grow

  471. below the ground.

  472. A child began

  473. to develop

  474. within the womb.

  475. The end result

  476. would be obvious,

  477. but the beginnings

  478. were hidden.

  479. Jesus said,

  480. the kingdom of God

  481. is like a mustard seed.

  482. The smallest

  483. of all seeds.

  484. You'd hardly

  485. even notice it.

  486. But when it's planted,

  487. it becomes

  488. the largest

  489. of all garden plants

  490. and the birds

  491. of the air

  492. take refuge

  493. in its branches.

  494. The point is,

  495. God often works

  496. in ways

  497. that are initially

  498. hidden from us.

  499. He works

  500. behind the scenes

  501. and within the hearts

  502. of women and men,

  503. often when we least

  504. expect it.

  505. The book of Ruth

  506. contains no dramatic

  507. miracles,

  508. no dreams

  509. or visions,

  510. no prophetic words.

  511. The main characters

  512. are two ordinary women

  513. who have no

  514. political authority,

  515. no military power,

  516. no economic leverage,

  517. no social prominence.

  518. Widows were some

  519. of the most powerless

  520. and disenfranchised

  521. people in the ancient world.

  522. And yet we see

  523. the Lord particularly

  524. caring

  525. for Naomi

  526. and somehow

  527. ensuring

  528. that even far away

  529. in the fields

  530. of Moab,

  531. she heard the news

  532. of the Lord's

  533. merciful provision

  534. for his people

  535. back home.

  536. And Naomi's response

  537. when she heard this news

  538. was to return.

  539. Now this word return,

  540. I don't know

  541. if you noticed it,

  542. it's the key verb

  543. in this chapter.

  544. It appears 12 times.

  545. Verse 6,

  546. she arose to return.

  547. Verse 7,

  548. they went on the way

  549. to return.

  550. Verse 8,

  551. Naomi says,

  552. go return.

  553. They say,

  554. no,

  555. we will return

  556. with you.

  557. Verse 11 and 12,

  558. turn back,

  559. same Hebrew word.

  560. Verse 15,

  561. return with her.

  562. Verse 16,

  563. Ruth says,

  564. don't urge me

  565. to return.

  566. Verse 21,

  567. the Lord has brought

  568. me back,

  569. same word.

  570. The Lord has returned

  571. me.

  572. And verse 22,

  573. so Naomi returned.

  574. Now you might wonder,

  575. why does the author

  576. use this verb

  577. so often?

  578. Right?

  579. You could tell the story

  580. without repeating

  581. the verbs 12 times.

  582. But the same verb

  583. is used throughout

  584. the Bible,

  585. especially in the prophets

  586. to speak of repentance.

  587. We read earlier,

  588. Isaiah 30,

  589. in returning and rest

  590. you shall be saved.

  591. In quietness and trust

  592. shall be your strength.

  593. Or Hosea 14,

  594. 1,

  595. return Israel

  596. to the Lord your God.

  597. Your sins have been

  598. your downfall.

  599. Take words with you

  600. and return

  601. to the Lord.

  602. If you consider

  603. the Bible as a whole,

  604. it's one big story

  605. of exile

  606. and return.

  607. In the very beginning

  608. of the Bible,

  609. God placed his people

  610. in a garden

  611. of his provision,

  612. in a temple

  613. of his presence.

  614. But people rebelled

  615. against his authority

  616. and distrusted

  617. his goodness

  618. and so they were exiled.

  619. They were sent away

  620. from that garden.

  621. They became wanderers

  622. in the wilderness,

  623. condemned to die.

  624. The very same pattern

  625. happened with the people

  626. of Israel.

  627. God brought them

  628. into the land of Canaan,

  629. a land of his provision,

  630. with a temple

  631. of his presence.

  632. But they rebelled

  633. against his authority

  634. and distrusted

  635. his goodness.

  636. The land was defiled

  637. and eventually

  638. they were sent

  639. into exile far away.

  640. Jesus told

  641. a famous parable

  642. that tells the same story.

  643. There was a man

  644. who had two sons.

  645. The younger son

  646. demanded his inheritance

  647. from his father,

  648. left home,

  649. journeyed into a far country,

  650. squandered his property

  651. there in reckless living

  652. and found himself

  653. destitute,

  654. lonely,

  655. and hungry.

  656. You see,

  657. according to the Bible,

  658. this is our human condition.

  659. We have all rebelled

  660. against God's authority

  661. and distrusted

  662. his goodness

  663. and the result is

  664. we find ourselves

  665. far from our true home,

  666. spiritually empty,

  667. profoundly alone.

  668. You see,

  669. by settling and staying

  670. in the land of Moab,

  671. Naomi had distanced herself

  672. from the Lord's people

  673. and from the Lord's provision.

  674. And in his kindness,

  675. the Lord was calling Naomi

  676. to return home,

  677. to come back to the Lord

  678. and come back to his people.

  679. Now you might say,

  680. well,

  681. well,

  682. wait a minute.

  683. I mean,

  684. how can you fault Naomi

  685. for leaving

  686. in the midst of a famine?

  687. I mean,

  688. she was only

  689. going along with her husband

  690. and providing for her children.

  691. I mean,

  692. and how can you fault her

  693. for staying there

  694. while there was still

  695. a famine going on?

  696. Well,

  697. fair enough.

  698. I think Naomi's family

  699. was bearing

  700. some of the consequences

  701. of the spiritual

  702. degeneration

  703. of their community

  704. as a whole,

  705. of Israel as a whole.

  706. But you know,

  707. when Naomi comes back

  708. in verse 21,

  709. Naomi makes no excuses.

  710. She says,

  711. I went away

  712. and the Lord

  713. has brought me back.

  714. You see,

  715. it's the kindness

  716. of the Lord

  717. that brings us

  718. to repentance,

  719. to return home

  720. to him.

  721. It's his merciful

  722. intervention

  723. that brings us home

  724. to his presence

  725. and to his people.

  726. In Jesus' parable,

  727. why does the younger son

  728. return home?

  729. It's because far off

  730. in the pig pen

  731. where he's hungry

  732. and alone,

  733. he remembers

  734. the kindness

  735. of his father.

  736. He says,

  737. even my father's

  738. hired servants

  739. have plenty of food

  740. to eat.

  741. And so he arose

  742. and started

  743. the long journey home.

  744. maybe like Naomi

  745. or like the prodigal son,

  746. you've lived far away

  747. from God

  748. or from the church

  749. for a long time.

  750. Maybe you left the church

  751. in a time of famine,

  752. in a time of spiritual dryness,

  753. in a time when the church

  754. didn't live up

  755. to what it should.

  756. Maybe your life

  757. has come crashing down

  758. around you

  759. and now you're alone,

  760. vulnerable,

  761. desperate,

  762. abandoned.

  763. You feel like you have

  764. no future

  765. and no hope.

  766. But can you see

  767. God's kindness

  768. extended to you

  769. even through

  770. ordinary circumstances

  771. of life,

  772. a meal paid for

  773. by a stranger,

  774. unexpected good news

  775. from far away

  776. or perhaps

  777. one dependable person

  778. who sticks with you

  779. through thick and thin

  780. when everyone else

  781. seems to have scattered.

  782. The Lord

  783. in his kindness

  784. is calling you

  785. to return,

  786. to repent,

  787. to come back home

  788. to him

  789. and to his people.

  790. Leave your idols behind,

  791. leave your life

  792. in Moab behind.

  793. Come back home

  794. to Jesus

  795. and to his church.

  796. What we see is

  797. Naomi was willing

  798. to leave behind

  799. everything

  800. and everyone

  801. that she had grown

  802. close to

  803. in the land of Moab.

  804. She had lost

  805. her husband

  806. and two sons

  807. but she still had

  808. her Moabite

  809. daughters-in-law

  810. and it's clear

  811. that they had developed

  812. a close emotional bond.

  813. Even after

  814. their husband's death,

  815. her daughters-in-law

  816. continued living with her.

  817. That was a bit unusual.

  818. But in verses

  819. eight and nine,

  820. we see that Naomi

  821. considered their future

  822. more highly

  823. than her own.

  824. She sent them off

  825. with a generous

  826. blessing

  827. and prepared

  828. to set out

  829. on the long journey

  830. to Bethlehem

  831. alone.

  832. Imagine

  833. in those days

  834. an elderly widow

  835. setting out

  836. on a seven

  837. to ten

  838. day journey

  839. journey

  840. which required

  841. crossing a national

  842. border,

  843. fording a major

  844. river,

  845. climbing over

  846. two thousand feet

  847. elevation

  848. in order to reach

  849. her hometown

  850. up in the hills,

  851. Bethlehem.

  852. She had only

  853. made this journey

  854. once before

  855. in her life.

  856. It was a great risk

  857. to travel

  858. such a distance

  859. alone.

  860. In verse

  861. ten,

  862. they both said,

  863. no,

  864. we will return

  865. with you

  866. to your people.

  867. They lifted up

  868. their voice

  869. and wept

  870. twice,

  871. verse nine,

  872. verse fourteen,

  873. but Naomi

  874. insisted,

  875. verse eleven

  876. through thirteen,

  877. she said,

  878. I want you

  879. two to leave,

  880. I want you

  881. two to have

  882. what I will

  883. never have.

  884. I want you

  885. two to have

  886. freedom.

  887. I want you

  888. two to have

  889. security.

  890. I want you

  891. two to have

  892. a happy marriage.

  893. And hope

  894. for the future.

  895. If you come

  896. with me,

  897. you will share

  898. in my grief

  899. and my loneliness

  900. and my poverty

  901. for the rest

  902. of my life.

  903. But if I let

  904. you go,

  905. you will have

  906. a bright future.

  907. So go.

  908. Naomi was

  909. willing to let

  910. go of everything

  911. and everyone

  912. that she had

  913. known in Moab

  914. to embrace

  915. a bitter present

  916. and an uncertain

  917. future.

  918. But she was

  919. determined to

  920. return home.

  921. God's kindness

  922. led Naomi

  923. to repentance.

  924. To leave

  925. behind her life

  926. in Moab

  927. and return

  928. home to the

  929. Lord's people.

  930. Now you might

  931. ask,

  932. what about

  933. Naomi's bitter

  934. complaints?

  935. If Naomi is

  936. returning home

  937. to the Lord

  938. and his people,

  939. what?

  940. verse 13,

  941. it is exceedingly

  942. bitter to me

  943. for your sake

  944. that the hand

  945. of the Lord

  946. has gone out

  947. against me.

  948. It could also

  949. be translated,

  950. it is more

  951. bitter for me

  952. than for you

  953. that the hand

  954. of the Lord

  955. has gone out

  956. against me.

  957. Verse 20,

  958. she says,

  959. don't call me

  960. Naomi,

  961. don't call me

  962. pleasant or

  963. lovely,

  964. call me bitter.

  965. I mean,

  966. imagine someone

  967. walking into

  968. church that

  969. you recognize

  970. from 10 years

  971. ago and

  972. they say,

  973. don't call me

  974. pleasant,

  975. call me bitter

  976. because the

  977. Lord has dealt

  978. very bitterly

  979. with me.

  980. I went away

  981. full and the

  982. Lord has brought

  983. me back empty.

  984. Why call me

  985. pleasant?

  986. When the

  987. Lord has

  988. testified against

  989. me,

  990. the Almighty

  991. has brought

  992. calamity upon

  993. me.

  994. Some people

  995. have defended

  996. Naomi's

  997. complaint.

  998. After all,

  999. she had lost

  1000. her husband

  1001. and two

  1002. sons.

  1003. She wasn't

  1004. complaining about

  1005. something trivial

  1006. or petty.

  1007. And Naomi

  1008. rightly recognized

  1009. that all things

  1010. come through

  1011. the sovereign

  1012. hand of God

  1013. and nothing

  1014. happens merely

  1015. by chance.

  1016. One person

  1017. said,

  1018. by holding

  1019. Yahweh

  1020. responsible for

  1021. her losses,

  1022. Naomi

  1023. affirmed

  1024. the Lord's

  1025. participation

  1026. in the

  1027. events.

  1028. Thus,

  1029. despite

  1030. appearances,

  1031. things were

  1032. not out of

  1033. control.

  1034. If he is

  1035. at least

  1036. involved,

  1037. Yahweh,

  1038. the Lord,

  1039. might very

  1040. well straighten

  1041. things out.

  1042. Bitter

  1043. complaint

  1044. cloaked

  1045. firm

  1046. faith.

  1047. Now,

  1048. other people

  1049. have criticized

  1050. Naomi's

  1051. complaint.

  1052. She does

  1053. indeed affirm

  1054. that God

  1055. is sovereign,

  1056. but she

  1057. certainly

  1058. doesn't rest

  1059. content

  1060. in that

  1061. truth.

  1062. Verse,

  1063. Naomi's

  1064. grieving

  1065. is also

  1066. twisted by

  1067. self-pity

  1068. and self-centeredness.

  1069. Verse 21,

  1070. she says,

  1071. I went away

  1072. full and the

  1073. Lord has brought

  1074. me back

  1075. empty.

  1076. She completely

  1077. ignores and

  1078. disregards her

  1079. loyal daughter-in-law

  1080. who has sacrificed

  1081. everything to

  1082. come with her.

  1083. She acts like

  1084. Ruth doesn't

  1085. even exist.

  1086. Now,

  1087. it's important

  1088. to realize

  1089. that Naomi

  1090. returns home

  1091. to the Lord

  1092. and to his

  1093. people

  1094. with bitterness,

  1095. with self-pity.

  1096. Because in

  1097. his kindness,

  1098. the Lord

  1099. calls us to

  1100. return to him

  1101. as we are.

  1102. He doesn't

  1103. say,

  1104. clean yourself

  1105. up and

  1106. then come

  1107. home to me.

  1108. When the

  1109. prodigal son

  1110. came home,

  1111. he stunk.

  1112. He was

  1113. dirty.

  1114. He was

  1115. not well-dressed.

  1116. He was

  1117. not used to

  1118. living in

  1119. his father's

  1120. house,

  1121. having been

  1122. gone for

  1123. so long.

  1124. If a

  1125. shepherd goes

  1126. and finds

  1127. a lost

  1128. sheep

  1129. that has

  1130. been stuck

  1131. in a

  1132. thicket of

  1133. thorn bushes,

  1134. that sheep

  1135. is going

  1136. to be

  1137. pretty prickly

  1138. until the

  1139. thorns get

  1140. combed out.

  1141. And that

  1142. may take

  1143. some time.

  1144. And Jesus,

  1145. the good

  1146. shepherd,

  1147. doesn't say,

  1148. stop being

  1149. so prickly.

  1150. He says,

  1151. come to me

  1152. and I will

  1153. give you

  1154. rest.

  1155. The content

  1156. of Naomi's

  1157. complaint is

  1158. mixed.

  1159. There's

  1160. honesty,

  1161. there's

  1162. bitterness,

  1163. there's

  1164. recognition of

  1165. God's

  1166. sovereignty,

  1167. there's a

  1168. discontentment

  1169. with it.

  1170. What do we

  1171. take from

  1172. that?

  1173. God's

  1174. love?

  1175. Let me

  1176. speak to you

  1177. for a minute

  1178. if you've

  1179. experienced

  1180. bitter

  1181. loss.

  1182. The Bible

  1183. makes room

  1184. for bitter

  1185. complaint.

  1186. Read many

  1187. of the

  1188. Psalms,

  1189. or the

  1190. book of

  1191. Lamentations,

  1192. or the

  1193. prophet

  1194. Jeremiah.

  1195. How long,

  1196. O Lord,

  1197. how long?

  1198. Why do you

  1199. hide your

  1200. face?

  1201. Why do you

  1202. forget our

  1203. affliction and

  1204. oppression?

  1205. You have

  1206. caused my

  1207. beloved and

  1208. my friend

  1209. to shun me,

  1210. and darkness

  1211. is my only

  1212. companion.

  1213. For some

  1214. of us,

  1215. these words

  1216. make us

  1217. uncomfortable.

  1218. If someone

  1219. comes into

  1220. church talking

  1221. like Naomi,

  1222. we want to

  1223. get out of

  1224. the conversation.

  1225. Or we

  1226. respond with

  1227. advice.

  1228. Well,

  1229. what can you

  1230. do differently

  1231. from now on?

  1232. Well,

  1233. you got

  1234. yourself into

  1235. this in the

  1236. first place.

  1237. Or

  1238. explanations.

  1239. Well,

  1240. every cloud

  1241. has a silver

  1242. lining.

  1243. Sometimes

  1244. advice and

  1245. explanations are

  1246. not helpful,

  1247. especially in

  1248. the moment.

  1249. That's what got

  1250. Job's friends

  1251. in trouble.

  1252. Now,

  1253. the bitter

  1254. complaints in

  1255. the Bible

  1256. are not

  1257. the last

  1258. word.

  1259. The Psalms

  1260. as a whole

  1261. take us

  1262. on a

  1263. journey from

  1264. bitter complaint

  1265. to joyful

  1266. praise.

  1267. Lamentations

  1268. is full of

  1269. complaint and

  1270. confession of

  1271. sin,

  1272. but smack in

  1273. the middle is a

  1274. resounding

  1275. declaration of

  1276. God's

  1277. faithfulness.

  1278. The steadfast

  1279. love of the

  1280. Lord never

  1281. ceases.

  1282. But, you

  1283. know,

  1284. sometimes you

  1285. need to go

  1286. through bitter

  1287. complaint in

  1288. order to

  1289. arrive at

  1290. joyful praise.

  1291. And sometimes

  1292. we need to

  1293. make space for

  1294. each other to

  1295. grieve bitterly

  1296. before God as

  1297. a necessary step

  1298. on the way to

  1299. praising God

  1300. with freedom

  1301. and joy.

  1302. In the

  1303. storyline of

  1304. Ruth, God

  1305. hears and

  1306. responds to

  1307. Naomi's

  1308. complaint in

  1309. three ways.

  1310. First, Ruth

  1311. and Orpah

  1312. weep with

  1313. her.

  1314. That's

  1315. verse 14.

  1316. When she

  1317. first says

  1318. how bitter

  1319. she is.

  1320. And that is a

  1321. Christian response

  1322. to weep with

  1323. those who

  1324. weep.

  1325. Second,

  1326. God sends

  1327. Ruth to

  1328. love Naomi

  1329. with steadfast

  1330. and sacrificial

  1331. love.

  1332. And as we'll

  1333. see, that's

  1334. what actually

  1335. begins to

  1336. transform Naomi.

  1337. From a

  1338. bitter,

  1339. self-pitying

  1340. person into

  1341. a joyful and

  1342. thankful person.

  1343. And third,

  1344. at the end of

  1345. the book,

  1346. chapter 4,

  1347. verse 15,

  1348. Naomi receives

  1349. a gentle

  1350. rebuke.

  1351. The women

  1352. of Bethlehem

  1353. say,

  1354. your daughter-in-law

  1355. who loves you

  1356. is worth more

  1357. to you than

  1358. seven sons.

  1359. They try to

  1360. reorient her

  1361. perspective.

  1362. Say, you

  1363. haven't

  1364. realized that

  1365. there's someone

  1366. right beside you

  1367. who's been

  1368. very loyal to

  1369. you.

  1370. Grieving people

  1371. sometimes need

  1372. rebuke,

  1373. just like the

  1374. rest of us.

  1375. But in Ruth,

  1376. at least,

  1377. it goes from

  1378. weeping to

  1379. loving and

  1380. later on

  1381. rebuking.

  1382. That's the

  1383. first thing we

  1384. see, that

  1385. God's kindness

  1386. leads us to

  1387. repentance, to

  1388. return home to

  1389. God and his

  1390. people.

  1391. That's the

  1392. first way God

  1393. extends his

  1394. steadfast love

  1395. toward us when

  1396. our lives are

  1397. falling apart.

  1398. His kindness

  1399. leads us to

  1400. repentance.

  1401. But second,

  1402. God's steadfast love

  1403. doesn't leave us

  1404. alone.

  1405. In his mercy,

  1406. the Lord provided

  1407. a loyal companion

  1408. for Naomi,

  1409. who would be a

  1410. living demonstration

  1411. of his promise

  1412. to never leave

  1413. her and never

  1414. forsake her.

  1415. Now, we've seen

  1416. Naomi considered

  1417. Orpah and Ruth's

  1418. future more highly

  1419. than her own.

  1420. She was willing

  1421. to let them go.

  1422. She was willing

  1423. to embrace a

  1424. bitter present and

  1425. an uncertain future

  1426. on her own so

  1427. that they could

  1428. enjoy a bright

  1429. future and hope

  1430. and flourishing.

  1431. Naomi was willing

  1432. to let go of

  1433. everything and

  1434. everyone that she

  1435. had known in the

  1436. land of Moab.

  1437. But what we see

  1438. here in Ruth,

  1439. verse 16 to the

  1440. end, is that

  1441. Ruth's love and

  1442. loyalty to Naomi

  1443. and to the Lord

  1444. surpassed even

  1445. Naomi's love and

  1446. loyalty to Ruth.

1447. Now, if you look at

  1448. the dialogue,

  1449. starting at verse

  1450. 8 and going to

  1451. verse 17, the way

  1452. it unfolds shows

  1453. how unusual

  1454. Ruth's response

  1455. is, right?

  1456. First, Naomi

  1457. blesses her

  1458. daughters-in-law

  1459. and send them

  1460. off.

  1461. And they say,

  1462. oh no, we'll

  1463. come with you.

  1464. And then Naomi

  1465. says, you have

  1466. absolutely no

  1467. future prospects

  1468. with me.

  1469. Then we see

  1470. Orpah turn back.

  1471. Orpah does the

  1472. sensible,

  1473. reasonable,

  1474. expected thing.

  1475. She stays in the

  1476. same place where

  1477. she's lived all

  1478. her life with the

  1479. people she's known

  1480. who speak her

  1481. language where she

  1482. will almost certainly

  1483. find another

  1484. husband.

  1485. Naomi says,

  1486. follow her

  1487. example.

  1488. And this back

  1489. and forth and

  1490. back and forth

  1491. leads to the

  1492. climax of this

  1493. chapter, verse 16

  1494. and verse 17,

  1495. where Ruth says

  1496. this, do not urge

  1497. me to leave you

  1498. or return from

  1499. following you.

  1500. For where you go,

  1501. I will go.

  1502. And where you

  1503. lodge, I will

  1504. lodge.

  1505. Your people shall

  1506. be my people and

  1507. your God, my God.

  1508. Where you die, I

  1509. will die.

  1510. And there will I

  1511. be buried.

  1512. May the Lord do

  1513. so to me and

  1514. more also if

  1515. anything but death

  1516. parts me from

  1517. you.

  1518. Ruth makes it

  1519. very clear.

  1520. She says, I'm

  1521. not just coming

  1522. with you for the

  1523. ride to make

  1524. sure you get

  1525. home safely.

  1526. I'm not clinging

  1527. on to you because

  1528. it's mutually

  1529. beneficial to both

  1530. of us.

  1531. I will join your

  1532. people and I will

  1533. worship your God.

  1534. I will not only

  1535. stay there for the

  1536. rest of your life,

  1537. I will stay there

1538. for the rest of my

  1539. life.

  1540. That's where I'll be

  1541. buried.

  1542. And I am making a

  1543. solemn oath, a

  1544. promise before

  1545. Yahweh, the God of

  1546. Israel, the Lord of

  1547. heaven and earth.

  1548. I won't leave you

  1549. because I won't leave

  1550. him.

  1551. Ruth's statement has

  1552. five parts.

1553. In the ESV, in the

  1554. Bibles, in the

  1555. pews, it's five

  1556. sentences.

  1557. And the central

  1558. statement is your

  1559. people shall be my

  1560. people and your God

  1561. my God.

  1562. That's the heart of

  1563. Ruth's promise to

  1564. Naomi.

  1565. It's not just about

  1566. Ruth's love for

  1567. Naomi and her care

  1568. and concern for her.

  1569. It's about Ruth

  1570. declaring her loyalty

1571. to the Lord and to

  1572. his people even at

  1573. the cost of leaving

  1574. everything else

  1575. behind.

  1576. See, Ruth's love and

  1577. loyalty to Naomi and

  1578. to the Lord surpassed

  1579. even Naomi's love and

  1580. loyalty toward Ruth.

1581. Let me give you three

  1582. contrasts.

  1583. Naomi was willing to

1584. let go of everything she

1585. had known for the last

1586. ten years in Moab in

1587. order to return home to

1588. where she had grown up.

  1589. Ruth was willing to

1590. let go of everything she

  1591. had known for her

1592. whole life in order to

1593. go to a land where she

  1594. had never lived.

  1595. Like Abraham.

  1596. Ruth left behind her

  1597. homeland and her pagan

  1598. religious background in

1599. order to be loyal to the

  1600. God of the Bible.

  1601. Now, unlike Abraham,

1602. as far as we know,

  1603. Ruth had received no

  1604. specific promises for

  1605. her personal future.

  1606. Ruth had received no

  1607. personal word from God.

1608. She had no spouse to

1609. accompany her, no army to

  1610. defend her, no possessions

  1611. to support her.

  1612. And yet Ruth went.

  1613. Because she had heard

1614. about the Lord and his

  1615. promises and his

  1616. kindness.

1617. And how he had promised

  1618. through this people,

  1619. through the nation of

  1620. Israel to bless every

  1621. nation on earth.

  1622. One day.

1623. And she said, I will give

1624. up everything to be part

  1625. of that people.

1626. To be included in that

  1627. promise.

  1628. Jesus said to his

  1629. disciples, any one of

  1630. you who does not

  1631. renounce all that he

  1632. has cannot be my

  1633. disciple.

  1634. But Jesus also

  1635. promised, truly I say

1636. to you, there was no

1637. one who has left behind

  1638. house or wife or

  1639. brothers or parents or

  1640. children for the sake

1641. of the kingdom of God

1642. who will not receive many

1643. times more in this time

1644. and in the age to come

  1645. eternal life.

1646. Jesus says in order to

1647. follow him we have to be

  1648. willing to give up

  1649. everything without

  1650. holding anything back.

1651. And yet he promises us

1652. that in the end God

1653. will never be in anyone's

  1654. debt.

1655. That God will repay us

1656. far more than we can

  1657. ever give to him.

1658. In his mercy and in his

  1659. generous love.

  1660. Ruth let go of

  1661. everything she had known

1662. to go to a foreign land

  1663. and yet, interestingly, in

  1664. a sense, she was

  1665. arriving at her true

  1666. home.

  1667. Verse 22 says, Naomi

  1668. returned and Ruth, the

  1669. Moabite, her daughter-in-law

  1670. with her, who returned

1671. from the country of Moab.

1672. You might read that and

1673. think, but Ruth has never

  1674. been to Bethlehem.

1675. How can she be returning

  1676. there?

1677. But she's coming to her

  1678. true home.

1679. She's coming to the Lord

1680. and to his people, to the

1681. place where she's meant to

  1682. be all along.

1683. So that's the first thing.

1684. Ruth left everything to go

1685. to a foreign land for the

1686. sake of God and his

  1687. promises.

  1688. Second contrast between

  1689. Ruth and Naomi.

1690. Naomi was an elderly woman

  1691. with no foreseeable

  1692. prospect of marriage or

  1693. posterity anywhere.

1694. She was willing to live

1695. the rest of her life on

1696. her own, in her loneliness,

1697. in her poverty, so that

1698. Ruth and Orpah could enjoy

  1699. marriage and a bright

  1700. future in Moab.

1701. Now, Ruth, as a young

  1702. woman with great prospects

1703. for a bright future in

1704. Moab, who chose to give up

1705. those very real prospects in

1706. order to devote herself to

1707. caring and providing for an

1708. old woman in a place where

1709. she had no prospects of

  1710. marriage and family.

1711. Ruth is one of the few

1712. examples of people in the

  1713. Old Testament voluntarily

  1714. embracing the likely prospect

  1715. of singleness long-term,

  1716. without sex, without marriage,

1717. without children, for the sake

1718. of obedience to the Lord and

  1719. service to his people.

1720. The Apostle Paul would later

1721. say singleness is a gift and

  1722. it's a call to undivided

  1723. devotion to the Lord.

1724. Jesus himself said some have

1725. renounced marriage for the sake

1726. of the kingdom of heaven.

1727. Now, the social dynamics are

1728. different today, but some of you

1729. may be called to embrace the

  1730. likely prospect of singleness,

1731. either for a long time or

1732. perhaps even for your whole

  1733. life.

1734. For the sake of obedience to

1735. Jesus and devoting yourself to

1736. his kingdom purposes in the

  1737. world.

  1738. That's the second contrast.

  1739. Naomi sacrificed a bright

  1740. future.

1741. Ruth sacrificed a bright future

1742. and marriage to care for a

  1743. dying widow.

1744. Third, Naomi sent off her

  1745. daughters-in-law with a

  1746. blessing.

1747. And in return, she received

  1748. multiple public displays of

  1749. affection and expressions of

  1750. love.

  1751. Ruth pronounced her unswerving

  1752. loyalty to Naomi.

1753. And what did she receive in

  1754. return?

  1755. Only silence.

  1756. Verse 18.

1757. And when she arrived with Naomi

1758. in Bethlehem, Naomi acted as if

1759. Ruth did not even exist.

1760. Have you ever made costly

1761. sacrifices for someone and they

1762. didn't even say thank you?

1763. This is what happened to Ruth.

1764. And she didn't become resentful.

1765. She didn't give up and return back

  1766. to Moab.

1767. She persevered in her steady,

  1768. devoted, unswerving loyalty to

  1769. Naomi.

1770. Ruth left everything she had known

1771. to go to a foreign land.

1772. She sacrificed a future of

1773. marriage and family to care for a

  1774. dying widow.

1775. She did it with no thanks.

  1776. No recognition.

  1777. At least not yet.

1778. In the midst of Naomi's darkness,

  1779. God sent Ruth.

1780. When Naomi's life had almost

1781. completely fallen apart, God sent

1782. Ruth to be a living demonstration

1783. of his steadfast, enduring love.

1784. God's kindness leads us to

  1785. repentance.

  1786. God's steadfast love doesn't leave

  1787. us alone.

1788. Perhaps God has sent someone into

1789. your life as a living reminder,

1790. a living demonstration of his

1791. steadfast love in the midst of your

  1792. darkness and brokenness.

1793. To be a living reminder that he has

  1794. not left you alone.

1795. But the message we proclaim in the season

1796. of Advent is that God's steadfast love

1797. has not left us alone.

1798. Ruth left her homeland in Moab.

1799. Jesus left his glory in heaven.

1800. God so loved the world that he gave his

1801. one and only son that whoever believes

1802. in him would not perish but have

  1803. eternal life.

1804. Jesus came to us, took on our frail

1805. humanity, lived his whole entire life

  1806. among us.

1807. It says he came to his own and his own

  1808. to not receive him.

1809. He came to us in our bitterness,

1810. in our self-pity, and he loved us

  1811. with steadfast, sacrificial, unfailing

  1812. love.

1813. And even death could not destroy his love.

1814. First John says this is love, not that

1815. we have loved God, but that he loved us

1816. and sent his son as an atoning sacrifice

  1817. for our sins.

1818. Jesus Christ is like the elder brother

1819. in the story of the prodigal son.

1820. Except he's a very different elder brother.

1821. The elder brother in that story stays home

1822. and is angry and is just as far away from

1823. the father as the younger one.

1824. But Jesus Christ is the elder brother

1825. who left his home and came to find us

1826. in the midst of the far country

1827. and show us his kindness

1828. and bring us home to the father with him.

1829. And so after his resurrection,

1830. Jesus said to Mary Magdalene,

1831. Jesus said, go tell my brothers,

1832. I'm ascending to my father and your father.

1833. To my God and your God.

1834. Ruth said to Naomi, your people will be my people.

1835. Your God will be my God.

1836. Jesus Christ says to us,

1837. because of what I have done for you,

1838. my father is now your father.

1839. My God is now your God.

1840. Lord, because I live, you also shall live.

  1841. Let us pray.

  1842. Father, we thank you

1843. that in the midst of the darkest seasons of our lives,

1844. in the midst of our brokenness,

1845. and in the midst of our sin,

  1846. our rebellion against you,

1847. that you have come to find us.

1848. To bring us the good news of your kindness

  1849. and faithfulness

1850. to bring us home to you.

1851. We thank you that you receive us

1852. along with our bitter complaints,

1853. along with our unresolved issues.

1854. we thank you that you love us.

1855. We thank you that you love us

  1856. with a steadfast,

  1857. undying,

  1858. unfailing,

  1859. relentless love.

  1860. Lord, we pray

1861. that you would fill our hearts,

1862. you would fill the empty places in our hearts

1863. with your steadfast and unfailing love,

  1864. with your loyal companionship.

1865. Lord, we pray that you would bring us back home to you,

1866. and we pray that we would know

1867. that you have not left us alone.

1868. And we pray that we would be your people in this world

1869. who reflect your steadfast love.

1870. So that others might see

  1871. who you are,

1872. what kind of a God you are.

1873. We pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ.

  1874. Amen.
