  1. Will you pray with me?

  2. Lord, now as we come to your word, we pray.

  3. When we pray for your help, we pray because we need you this morning.

  4. Lord, to illuminate your word to us so that we might understand it rightly.

  5. Lord, to apply it to our hearts, that we might respond as you have called us to respond.

  6. Lord, I ask for your help this morning.

  7. Lord, that I might speak your words and that you might use my words to speak your truth.

  8. Holy Spirit, be with us this morning.

  9. Lord, help us to see the glory and the majesty of Christ.

  10. Lord, what we have just sung, Jesus, in our place, what a great, great truth this is for us.

  11. Lord, we pray these things in Jesus' name.

  12. Amen.

  13. Well, Happy New Year.

  14. It's good to see you all.

  15. We just got back yesterday from traveling to see family, and it's good to be here this morning.

  16. As if you were here last week, you would know that we're doing a mini-series for these three weeks on the threefold offices of Christ.

  17. Jesus as our prophet, priest, and king.

  18. And so this morning, we are going to look at Jesus' high priestly ministry.

  19. And as I was thinking about this message, I asked myself this question.

  20. Why is Jesus' high priestly ministry good news for us?

  21. It doesn't strike us that this is something that is easily accessible.

  22. I don't walk down the street going to stop and shop thinking, I wish I had a better high priest today.

  23. It just doesn't cross our minds.

  24. It's not a part of our culture.

  25. It's not a part of our world.

  26. So we're going to explore what a high priest is, and then we're going to look at what Jesus' high priestly ministry is for us this morning.

  27. If you're here and you're exploring Christianity, we're going to explore and unfold some of the great truths of who Jesus is for us.

  28. If you've been a Christian for the whole of your life, as long as you can remember, we're going to explore Jesus and who He is.

  29. For us.

  30. And whether you're just exploring or have seen these truths for a long time, I hope that you will be encouraged this morning.

  31. So first, we're going to look at just what is a high priest.

  32. And it's interesting to think about the fact that priests have been a part of human, relating, religious life across the ages and across the times.

  33. If you think about cultures far away from our Western culture, they still have priests of some sort.

  34. Not always, but often.

  35. Often there are high priests.

  36. Why do we have this human impulse to have some kind of priest in our religious structure, regardless of what it is?

  37. Well, because I think we have a question of how do we relate to God?

  38. How is it that we as human beings stand before someone who in some way is greater than us or different than us, who is over us and to whom we have to give some kind of account or some kind of reckoning?

  39. And the fact is that we don't want to stand before God on our own.

  40. And so we have priests.

  41. We long for a priest to stand before us instinctively.

  42. I think we know our imperfection.

  43. We know our weakness.

  44. We know our need.

  45. And so the idea of a priest has been a part of religious life throughout, I think, human history.

  46. As we turn to the idea of it in the Bible, I want you to turn with me to Hebrews chapter 9.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  47. Excuse me.

  48. Hebrews chapter 9.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  49. We're going to look at Hebrews chapter 9, verses 1 through 10.

    Hebrews 9:1–10

  50. To get a New Testament account of what the high priest did, I thought I'd spare you reading chapters and chapters of Leviticus this morning.

  51. And so we're going to look at a summary in Hebrews chapter 9.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  52. I don't have the page number.

  53. It's 1,000 and something.

  54. And if that'll help.

  55. 1,005?

  56. Yeah, there we go.

  57. 1,005.

  58. Hebrews chapter 9.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  59. We're going to read verses 1 through 10 just to see how the Bible describes what the purpose of the high priest in the Old Testament was.

  60. Now, even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness.

  61. For a tent was prepared, the first section in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the presence.

  62. It is called the holy place.

  63. Behind the second curtain was a second section called the most holy place, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold,

  64. in which was a golden urn holding the manna and Aaron's staff that budded and the tablets of the covenant.

  65. Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

  66. That's simply a description of the temple in Jerusalem where the Jewish people would gather to worship.

  67. And then it goes on.

  68. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties.

  69. But into the second, that is the most holy place.

  70. But into the second, only the high priest goes.

  71. And he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.

  72. By this, the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing,

  73. which is symbolic for the present age.

  74. According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper,

  75. but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.

  76. If you want to understand this, go back on the Trinity website.

  77. There are some great sermons on the book of Hebrews from two years ago.

  78. It will get you a whole detail into this.

  79. But basically, what he's describing here is that there was in the temple a special day and a special place

  80. where this man, the high priest, would go once a year.

  81. And he would bear sacrifices for his own sin and for the sin of the nation.

  82. This is the pinnacle of a system of animal sacrifices in the Old Testament.

  83. And we might think, why would God do that?

  84. Isn't this barbaric?

  85. Isn't this primitive?

  86. This can't have anything to do with us.

  87. But I think that, in fact, this whole system was given to point us to a couple of truths.

  88. Pastor Alistair Begg summarized it this way.

  89. He said that the whole sacrificial system and the role of the high priest in it

  90. meant to show that forgiveness is costly

  91. and that the punishment due to sin is death

  92. and that without the shedding of blood, that is, without something actually dying,

  93. sin cannot be removed.

  94. And so the high priest had this essential role of offering up a sacrifice,

  95. an animal sacrifice, each year for the sins of the nation

  96. so that their sins might be covered.

  97. In this, God gave instructions to the people in the Old Testament

  98. about how they might approach him

  99. because it was God himself who dwelt in that most holy place.

  100. The question that I ask for us today is,

  101. with no temple and with no high priest and with no sacrifices,

  102. what do we do?

  103. How do we live seeking to approach God and seeking to please him?

  104. I posit to you that there are two different ways

  105. that we tend to address this question.

  106. The first is that, and this is probably the most common,

  107. that we seek success in trying to be good enough

  108. in our own estimation to be acceptable to God.

  109. We figure that we can actually be a good enough person somehow,

  110. that God ought to accept us.

  111. That seems right to us.

  112. It builds in us a self-confidence.

  113. I'm good enough, don't you think?

  114. But surprisingly, this attempt,

  115. which seems like a very common

  116. and not that hard to accomplish, right?

  117. But in fact, it has this dark underside, doesn't it?

  118. Because seeking to be good enough

  119. is a terrible prison for us, isn't it?

  120. Because it makes us live

  121. with an unending fear of failure.

  122. If we try to be good enough,

  123. we always wonder, what if we blow it?

  124. How badly do we have to blow it?

  125. If we blow it in this way,

  126. what happens to us then?

  127. And we live our lives driven

  128. to be good enough somehow.

  129. Some of this may look like

  130. the more uglier sides of getting ahead first at all costs,

  131. not caring about anything,

  132. but trying to be successful

  133. in the eyes of whatever your subculture is

  134. and however it measures it.

  135. Climbing the corporate ladder,

  136. having enough money,

  137. having power in your society,

  138. whatever it is.

  139. But I think that most of us see those

  140. and we think, well, that's kind of crass and ugly

  141. and an attempt to be good and successful.

  142. How about the more socially acceptable ways

  143. that we pursue this?

  144. I'm going to love my child better than anyone else.

  145. I'm going to be the best volunteer

  146. this nonprofit has ever had.

  147. I'm going to be the most zealous employee

  148. in this company,

  149. not out of self-promotion,

  150. but just so they'll see

  151. what a good hard worker I am.

  152. I'm going to be the straight-A student

  153. who's going to succeed.

  154. Even our best impulses to be good

  155. can be driven by this desire

  156. to be acceptable before God

  157. and make ourself good enough.

  158. And in doing so,

  159. we create a prison of our own success.

  160. Because one of the things that it does

  161. is it means we can't ever admit that we failed.

  162. We can't ever say,

  163. I couldn't do it.

  164. We can't ever admit a weakness,

  165. let alone just a blatant sin.

  166. I was selfish.

  167. I did it because I wanted to hurt that person.

  168. Or whatever it is that we do.

  169. Now, some of us have tried this hamster wheel

  170. of trying to be good enough,

  171. long enough to know

  172. that it doesn't work very well, does it?

  173. We don't want to live in that prison,

  174. but we think,

  175. what do we do?

  176. Where do we go?

  177. And often, I think,

  178. we respond with hopelessness

  179. and despair.

  180. We know we can't measure up.

  181. There's nothing we can do about it.

  182. And so we give up.

  183. Not only have we failed,

  184. but we have become a failure in this world.

  185. And then we just live trying to survive.

  186. But we have stopped seeking God.

  187. We have stopped seeking to approach Him

  188. boldly and confidently.

  189. We have stopped seeking to relate to Him at all

  190. because we know what He thinks of us.

  191. We're a loser.

  192. Friends, this may be true in our culture.

  193. It's actually true,

  194. in fact, as well,

  195. even in our church.

  196. Isn't it?

  197. It's so easy for us to put a religious,

  198. a Christian veneer over this same impulse

  199. and to think,

  200. well, if I know my Bible well enough,

  201. if I've memorized enough verses,

  202. if I'm active in enough activities,

  203. if I'm there at all the work days,

  204. if whatever it is,

  205. you pick your standard,

  206. if I can do it well enough,

  207. wouldn't that be great?

  208. Look at what a good church member I am.

  209. Or we feel like a failure.

  210. We think,

  211. what am I doing here?

  212. Why do I keep coming?

  213. It's just an exercise in hypocrisy.

  214. These people don't know what I'm really like,

  215. and if they did,

  216. they'd kick me out.

  217. That's how we often approach church,

  218. isn't it?

  219. We hide.

  220. We can't admit

  221. what's really going on.

  222. We hide.

  223. We can't admit our failure.

  224. Friends,

  225. this shouldn't be surprising.

  226. Isn't this what we see

  227. even back in the Garden of Eden?

  228. When Adam and Eve fall into sin,

  229. what do they do?

  230. They hide.

  231. They blame shift.

  232. They run away

  233. rather than admitting,

  234. confessing,

  235. revealing

  236. their sin

  237. and their neediness.

  238. I spent all this time

  239. exploring this

  240. because

  241. I hope you see

  242. that we in fact

  243. do need help

  244. in standing before God.

  245. We don't know

  246. how to approach God

  247. on our own.

  248. And instinctively,

  249. deep down,

  250. we know

  251. that we need someone

  252. to stand in our place.

  253. Friends,

  254. this is where

  255. Jesus' high priestly ministry

  256. steps in.

  257. It is God's glorious provision

  258. for us.

  259. And the book of Hebrews

  260. is the place to go

  261. in the New Testament

  262. to see the richness

  263. and the depth

  264. of Jesus' high priestly ministry

  265. for us

  266. and how He stands

  267. before God

  268. on our behalf.

  269. If you want a full account of this,

  270. go read Hebrews 2,

  271. chapter 2 through 9.

  272. It's about seven chapters.

  273. It's rich.

  274. It's deep.

  275. As I said,

  276. there's a great series

  277. of sermons

  278. that some other guys

  279. preached on it

  280. that I highly recommend

  281. and

  282. on our website.

  283. But what we're going to see

  284. is that

  285. Jesus' high priestly ministry

  286. does two things for us.

  287. First,

  288. we're going to look

  289. at chapter 4

  290. and see that

  291. Jesus,

  292. in His high priestly ministry,

  293. He stands with us

  294. in our humanity.

  295. And then secondly,

  296. we're going to see

  297. from chapter 9

  298. that He stands for us

  299. before God.

  300. So let's look first

  301. at Jesus,

  302. our high priest,

  303. standing with us.

  304. Turn with me

  305. to Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  306. just a few pages back.

  307. Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4:14–16

  308. verse 14 through 16.

  309. Since then,

  310. we have

  311. a great high priest

  312. who has passed

  313. through the heavens,

  314. Jesus,

  315. the Son of God.

  316. Let us hold fast

  317. our confession,

  318. for we do not have

  319. a high priest

  320. who is unable

  321. to sympathize

  322. with our weaknesses,

  323. but one who

  324. in every respect

  325. has been tempted

  326. as we are,

  327. yet without sin.

  328. Let us then

  329. with confidence

  330. draw near

  331. to the throne of grace

  332. that we may receive

  333. mercy

  334. and find grace

  335. to help

  336. in time of need.

  337. Friends,

  338. one of the glorious

  339. truths of Jesus'

  340. high priestly ministry

  341. is that He stands

  342. with us

  343. in sympathy

  344. with our weakness

  345. and our humanity.

  346. The writer of the Hebrews

  347. has developed

  348. the argument

  349. about Jesus

  350. and His uniqueness

  351. as being both

  352. the God,

  353. as being both

  354. God and man

  355. in His role

  356. that He comes

  357. to be our Redeemer

  358. and our Savior.

  359. And He comes

  360. to this point

  361. and He says,

  362. Jesus has identified

  363. by becoming human,

  364. He has identified

  365. with us

  366. in such a way

  367. that He knows,

  368. He knows what our life

  369. is really like.

  370. God is not a distant,

  371. sovereign dictator

  372. who is unacquainted

  373. and unfamiliar

  374. with the realities

  375. of life

  376. in a broken world.

  377. world.

  378. But as it says

  379. in verse 15,

  380. He is one

  381. who sympathizes

  382. with our weaknesses.

  383. That is,

  384. He feels

  385. with us

  386. what we feel.

  387. He does not

  388. come to us

  389. and berate us.

  390. He does not

  391. come

  392. to condemn

  393. us

  394. in the face

  395. of our temptations.

  396. why are you

  397. so weak?

  398. Buck up!

  399. Get on with it!

  400. What's wrong

  401. with you?

  402. This is what

  403. we hear often,

  404. whether from others

  405. or in

  406. the self-talk

  407. in our own mind.

  408. When we face

  409. temptations,

  410. when we face

  411. trials,

  412. we feel

  413. the weight

  414. of condemnation

  415. so easily.

  416. just for

  417. feeling

  418. our weakness,

  419. not for

  420. the sin.

  421. Jesus comes

  422. and He says,

  423. I understand.

  424. I have

  425. been there.

  426. I remember

  427. once,

  428. I had a coach

  429. in high school,

  430. played lacrosse,

  431. and

  432. He,

  433. one of the things

  434. that He did

  435. with us

  436. is that He

  437. never made us

  438. do a running

  439. drill,

  440. an exercise

  441. that He

  442. wouldn't do

  443. with us.

  444. So He'd be like,

  445. all right,

  446. boys,

  447. this is what

  448. we're doing

  449. today,

  450. right?

  451. And then we'd

  452. line up,

  453. and He'd do it

  454. with us

  455. every time.

  456. And I can't

  457. tell you how

  458. much authority

  459. that gave

  460. Him

  461. to encourage

  462. us,

  463. because He

  464. wasn't just

  465. sitting there

  466. in His lounge

  467. chair,

  468. sipping His

  469. lemonade,

  470. or His Diet

  471. Coke,

  472. or whatever,

  473. saying,

  474. all right,

  475. boys,

  476. go,

  477. go,

  478. you go work,

  479. and I'm

  480. going to sit

  481. here and watch

  482. you do it,

  483. like many coaches

  484. do.

  485. He said,

  486. I'm going to

  487. do this

  488. with you.

  489. And in doing

  490. that,

  491. His encouragement

  492. and His

  493. exhortation

  494. for us to

  495. keep going

  496. and not give

  497. up,

  498. had so much

  499. weight,

  500. because He knew

  501. what it would

  502. cost to do

  503. what He'd

  504. ask us to do.

  505. this is what

  506. Jesus does

  507. for us.

  508. Jesus,

  509. by becoming

  510. a human being

  511. and identifying

  512. with us,

  513. by taking on

  514. human flesh

  515. and walking

  516. in this world,

  517. He knows

  518. our trials.

  519. Now,

  520. some of you

  521. may be sitting

  522. there thinking,

  523. yeah,

  524. but you know

  525. what?

  526. Jesus never

  527. saw internet

  528. pornography.

  529. Jesus never

  530. felt the power

  531. of the boardroom

  532. and the seat.

  533. He never

  534. had two

  535. small children

  536. and two careers

  537. and tried to

  538. juggle that

  539. schedule.

  540. I had a

  541. professor in

  542. seminary who

  543. helped me

  544. understand this

  545. this way.

  546. For temptation

  547. to be real,

  548. it actually has

  549. to have the

  550. force to grab

  551. our attention.

  552. Right?

  553. So,

  554. I might be

  555. tempted.

  556. say I'm

  557. trying to

  558. eat well,

  559. I might be

  560. tempted by

  561. a donut.

  562. Right?

  563. But you know

  564. what?

  565. If I don't

  566. like donuts,

  567. there's no

  568. temptation there.

  569. I just walk

  570. right by it.

  571. It doesn't

  572. matter.

  573. Right?

  574. So,

  575. temptation

  576. only has

  577. power when

  578. there's an

  579. actual

  580. attraction to

  581. doing the

  582. thing that

  583. you're being

  584. tempted to

  585. do.

  586. Now,

  587. Jesus was

  588. rarely tempted

  589. to do many

  590. of the things

  591. that we do.

  592. it seems.

  593. But interestingly,

  594. in Matthew 4,

  595. when the devil

  596. comes to

  597. tempt Jesus,

  598. what does he

  599. tempt him

  600. with?

  601. He tempts

  602. him with the

  603. very thing

  604. that Jesus

  605. would most

  606. care about.

  607. Show the

  608. glory of God

  609. in these

  610. spectacular

  611. ways.

  612. Shortcut

  613. to the

  614. glory of

  615. your kingdom

  616. without the

  617. cross.

  618. Jesus

  619. knows

  620. temptation

  621. greater than

  622. we have

  623. ever faced.

  624. If the

  625. temptations we

  626. feel are like

  627. the waves that

  628. push a pebble

  629. up and down

  630. the beach,

  631. the temptations

  632. that Jesus

  633. faced were

  634. like the

  635. thundering

  636. breakers

  637. breaking on

  638. a rock

  639. on the

  640. main coast,

  641. world,

  642. Jesus

  643. really does

  644. understand.

  645. And he

  646. sympathizes

  647. with our

  648. weakness.

  649. He knew

  650. hunger and

  651. thirst,

  652. tiredness,

  653. the rejection

  654. of family,

  655. the betrayal

  656. of friends.

  657. He knew

  658. the sufferings

  659. of beatings

  660. and of nails

  661. piercing his

  662. hand.

  663. And he knew

  664. death,

  665. the very

  666. thing that we

  667. fear the

  668. most.

  669. He knew

  670. death for

  671. us.

  672. So he does

  673. understand how

  674. hard it

  675. can be to

  676. approach God.

  677. And he says,

  678. stop hiding,

  679. don't give in

  680. to despair,

  681. but because I

  682. understand,

  683. hold fast.

  684. Hold fast to

  685. the confession

  686. of your faith.

  687. Don't give up

  688. when it gets

  689. hard.

  690. Don't give up

  691. when it feels

  692. like you can't

  693. do it anymore.

  694. Don't give up

  695. when you

  696. fail.

  697. Draw near.

  698. Draw near

  699. to the

  700. throne of

  701. God

  702. to find

  703. help

  704. and grace.

  705. Undeserved,

  706. unearned.

  707. Grace that

  708. will help you

  709. in your time

  710. of trial.

  711. come in the

  712. midst of all

  713. the trials

  714. that you

  715. face.

  716. Come and

  717. sit in his

  718. presence

  719. in the depth

  720. of your pain.

  721. Come and

  722. rage against

  723. him in

  724. your anger.

  725. Come

  726. confess your

  727. weakness

  728. and despair.

  729. Come and

  730. receive from

  731. this high

  732. priest all

  733. that you

  734. need.

  735. God

  736. because he

  737. understands

  738. and he

  739. sympathizes

  740. with you.

  741. But you

  742. know,

  743. friends,

  744. maybe you've

  745. had a friend

  746. who's really

  747. good at

  748. sympathizing

  749. with you.

  750. Oh,

  751. I know

  752. that's really

  753. hard.

  754. Oh,

  755. yeah,

  756. that's very

  757. hard.

  758. Yes,

  759. it's very

  760. hard.

  761. And then

  762. at the end

  763. you walk

  764. away and

  765. you think,

  766. well,

  767. at least he

  768. gets it

  769. that it's

  770. hard.

  771. But my

  772. life hasn't

  773. been changed,

  774. has it?

  775. That's not

  776. been very

  777. much help.

  778. Thankfully,

  779. Jesus is

  780. not a

  781. friend like

  782. this.

  783. Because Jesus

  784. has done

  785. more than

  786. just identify

  787. with us

  788. and stand

  789. with us

  790. in weakness.

  791. But Jesus

  792. stands for

  793. us before

  794. God.

  795. And in

  796. doing that,

  797. he accomplishes

  798. something glorious

  799. and wonderful

  800. for us.

  801. Turn back

  802. with me to

  803. chapter 9

  804. of Hebrews.

  805. Hebrews

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  806. chapter 9,

  807. we're going

  808. to pick up

  809. in verse 11.

  810. We're going

  811. to read 11

  812. through 14.

  813. Remember,

  814. we read the

  815. beginning of

  816. this chapter

  817. about the

  818. high priest

  819. going in

  820. once a

  821. year.

  822. Here we

  823. see

  824. starting

  825. in verse

  826. 11.

  827. But when

  828. Christ

  829. appeared

  830. as a

  831. high priest

  832. of the

  833. good things

  834. that have

  835. come,

  836. then through

  837. the greater

  838. and more

  839. perfect tent

  840. not made

  841. with hands

  842. that is not

  843. of this

  844. creation,

  845. he entered

  846. once for

  847. all into

  848. the holy

  849. places,

  850. not by

  851. means of

  852. the blood

  853. of goats

  854. and of

  855. calves,

  856. by means

  857. of his

  858. own blood,

  859. thus securing

  860. an eternal

  861. redemption.

  862. For if

  863. the blood

  864. of goats

  865. and bulls

  866. and the

  867. sprinkling

  868. of defiled

  869. persons

  870. with the

  871. ashes of

  872. a heifer

  873. sanctify

  874. for purification

  875. of the

  876. flesh,

  877. how much

  878. more

  879. will the

  880. blood of

  881. Christ,

  882. who through

  883. the eternal

  884. spirit offered

  885. himself without

  886. blemish to

  887. God,

  888. purify our

  889. conscience from

  890. dead works

  891. to serve

  892. the living

  893. God.

  894. Jesus

  895. stands for

  896. us.

  897. In this

  898. amazing

  899. image,

  900. Jesus pulls

  901. together two

  902. different threads

  903. in the Old

  904. Testament imagery

  905. because he is in

  906. this image both

  907. the high priest

  908. and the

  909. sacrifice.

  910. And in case

  911. you ever

  912. wanted to

  913. wondered about

  914. this,

  915. this is part of

  916. the beauty

  917. and the complexity

  918. of seeing how

  919. the Old

  920. Testament points

  921. to the new.

  922. It's not a

  923. clean one-to-one

  924. correlation or

  925. correspondence.

  926. It's this rich

  927. tapestry of

  928. interwoven themes

  929. that point to

  930. Jesus.

  931. Jesus is also

  932. the temple,

  933. surprisingly.

  934. So, when you

  935. look at it,

  936. it's this

  937. beautiful picture.

  938. But here in

  939. these verses

  940. particularly,

  941. Jesus is both

  942. the high priest

  943. and the

  944. sacrifice.

  945. He offers

  946. not the blood

  947. of someone

  948. or something

  949. else,

  950. but he offers

  951. his very own

  952. blood,

  953. that is his

  954. very own

  955. life.

  956. Remember when

  957. we talked about

  958. the Old Testament

  959. sacrificial system

  960. and what it

  961. pointed to?

  962. That forgiveness

  963. is costly,

  964. that the penalty

  965. of sin is death,

  966. and a death

  967. must occur

  968. for sin to be

  969. forgiven?

  970. Friends,

  971. this is the

  972. kind of high

  973. priest that we

  974. have,

  975. because he

  976. has paid

  977. that cost

  978. for us.

  979. In Leviticus

  980. 16,

  981. the day of

  982. atonement,

  983. this offering,

  984. the human

  985. high priest

  986. would walk

  987. in with

  988. this offering.

  989. He had

  990. two offerings,

  991. one for

  992. himself,

  993. and then

  994. one for

  995. the people.

  996. And tradition

  997. has it

  998. that they

  999. would tie

  1000. bells to

  1001. the bottom

  1002. of his

  1003. garments

  1004. and tie a

  1005. rope around

  1006. his ankle

  1007. because if

  1008. his sins,

  1009. if his

  1010. sacrifices were

  1011. not acceptable

  1012. and his

  1013. sin before

  1014. God was

  1015. real and

  1016. uncovered,

  1017. it would

  1018. result in

  1019. his death.

  1020. And if the

  1021. bells stopped

  1022. jingling,

  1023. they would

  1024. pull the

  1025. body out

  1026. with the

  1027. rope.

  1028. I'm not

  1029. sure that

  1030. ever actually

  1031. happened,

  1032. but it's

  1033. the tradition

  1034. that we

  1035. hear about

  1036. that helps

  1037. us understand

  1038. the severity

  1039. of what

  1040. happens.

  1041. And when

  1042. Jesus comes

  1043. in,

  1044. when Jesus

  1045. says,

  1046. I am the

  1047. high priest

  1048. that will

  1049. stand before

  1050. God

  1051. for you

  1052. on your

  1053. behalf,

  1054. and I

  1055. will offer

  1056. a superior

  1057. sacrifice

  1058. of my

  1059. very own

  1060. life

  1061. for you.

  1062. Jesus is

  1063. no longer

  1064. simply

  1065. sympathizing

  1066. with us

  1067. in our

  1068. weakness,

  1069. but he

  1070. is solving

  1071. the question

  1072. that we

  1073. started with,

  1074. which is

  1075. how can a

  1076. man stand

  1077. before God?

  1078. God.

  1079. If we

  1080. stand before

  1081. God in

  1082. our sin,

  1083. it is our

  1084. death that's

  1085. required,

  1086. and there's

  1087. no performance,

  1088. no service,

  1089. no good

  1090. work that

  1091. can save

  1092. us from

  1093. that.

  1094. There's

  1095. no guilty

  1096. feelings,

  1097. no religious

  1098. penance,

  1099. not even

  1100. our religious

  1101. despair can

  1102. save us.

  1103. Jesus comes

  1104. and he

  1105. says,

  1106. I can do

  1107. what you

  1108. cannot do.

  1109. I will

  1110. be the

  1111. high priest

  1112. to offer

  1113. what you

  1114. need.

  1115. Jesus offers

  1116. his perfect

  1117. life of

  1118. obedience.

  1119. He was,

  1120. as we saw

  1121. in chapter

  1122. four,

  1123. without sin,

  1124. and so

  1125. he did

  1126. not stand

  1127. under the

  1128. curse of

  1129. death and

  1130. the judgment

  1131. of death

  1132. that we all

  1133. do.

  1134. Because he

  1135. was without

  1136. sin,

  1137. he had a

  1138. perfect life

  1139. to offer,

  1140. which meant

  1141. that he

  1142. did not

  1143. have to

  1144. die for

  1145. his own

  1146. sin,

  1147. so he

  1148. could die

  1149. for ours.

  1150. In his

  1151. humanity,

  1152. it meant

  1153. that he

  1154. could actually

  1155. stand in

  1156. our place.

  1157. Bulls and

  1158. goats can

  1159. only cover

  1160. temporarily,

  1161. can only

  1162. provide,

  1163. as it says,

  1164. the purification

  1165. of the

  1166. flesh.

  1167. But Jesus

  1168. in his

  1169. humanity

  1170. identifies with

  1171. us so

  1172. that the

  1173. sacrifice of

  1174. his life

  1175. is an

  1176. even,

  1177. an a fair,

  1178. and a

  1179. just

  1180. substitute.

  1181. That a

  1182. life of a

  1183. man was

  1184. taken for

  1185. the life

  1186. of a

  1187. man.

  1188. His

  1189. death is

  1190. taken on

  1191. our behalf.

  1192. And so

  1193. the judgment

  1194. of God

  1195. on our

  1196. sin falls

  1197. upon him.

  1198. And so

  1199. Jesus

  1200. stands to

  1201. intercede

  1202. for us.

  1203. As

  1204. Hebrews

  1205. 7,

  1206. 25

  1207. says,

  1208. consequently

  1209. he is

  1210. able to

  1211. save to

  1212. the uttermost

  1213. those who

  1214. draw near

  1215. to God

  1216. through him,

  1217. since he

  1218. always lives

  1219. to make

  1220. intercession

  1221. for them.

  1222. What is

  1223. that intercession

  1224. that he

  1225. makes?

  1226. He stands

  1227. before God,

  1228. and when we

  1229. come to

  1230. God,

  1231. Jesus

  1232. says,

  1233. I suffered

  1234. for his

  1235. sin.

  1236. I suffered

  1237. for her

  1238. sin.

  1239. sin.

  1240. They are

  1241. taken away.

  1242. I have

  1243. done that.

  1244. I have

  1245. done it

  1246. once for

  1247. all so

  1248. that I

  1249. never have

  1250. to go

  1251. back in

  1252. again.

  1253. I have

  1254. done all

  1255. that is

  1256. needed for

  1257. those sins

  1258. to be

  1259. forgiven.

  1260. And I

  1261. have risen

  1262. from the

  1263. dead to

  1264. defeat the

  1265. power of

  1266. sin and

  1267. death and

  1268. now stand

  1269. to eternally

  1270. intercede

  1271. for you

  1272. so that

  1273. the redemption

  1274. of those

  1275. who are in

  1276. Christ will

  1277. never fail

  1278. because he

  1279. will never

  1280. die and

  1281. his sacrifice

  1282. is enough.

  1283. And so

  1284. we have

  1285. such a

  1286. great high

  1287. priest who

  1288. has gone

  1289. and offered

  1290. what we

  1291. could not

  1292. offer to

  1293. give us

  1294. what we

  1295. could not

  1296. attain on

  1297. our own.

  1298. Acceptance

  1299. from God,

  1300. forgiveness,

  1301. life,

  1302. freedom of

  1303. living with

  1304. him, and

  1305. as we saw

  1306. in 914,

  1307. both the

  1308. purity of

  1309. our

  1310. consciences

  1311. and the

  1312. freedom from

  1313. dead works

  1314. to serve

  1315. the living

  1316. God.

  1317. We no

  1318. longer have

  1319. to live on

  1320. the hamster

  1321. wheel of

  1322. performance,

  1323. trying

  1324. desperately,

  1325. to be

  1326. good enough.

  1327. We can

  1328. spend all

  1329. of our

  1330. energy

  1331. instead

  1332. joyfully

  1333. serving

  1334. God

  1335. because he

  1336. has saved

  1337. us.

  1338. What great

  1339. work that

  1340. is.

  1341. Reminds me

  1342. of the hymn

  1343. Charles

  1344. Wesley.

  1345. Arise,

  1346. my soul,

  1347. arise.

  1348. Shake off

  1349. thy guilty

  1350. fears,

  1351. thy bleeding

  1352. sacrifice,

  1353. and my

  1354. behalf

  1355. appears.

  1356. Before the

  1357. throne,

  1358. my Savior

  1359. stands.

  1360. My name

  1361. is written

  1362. on his

  1363. hands.

  1364. He ever

  1365. lives above

  1366. for me to

  1367. intercede.

  1368. With his

  1369. redeeming love,

  1370. his precious

  1371. blood to

  1372. plead,

  1373. his blood

  1374. was spilt

  1375. for all

  1376. our race

  1377. and sprinkles

  1378. now the

  1379. throne of

  1380. grace.

  1381. Five bleeding

  1382. wounds he

  1383. bears,

  1384. received on

  1385. Calvary.

  1386. They pour

  1387. effectual

  1388. prayers.

  1389. They strongly

  1390. speak for

  1391. me.

  1392. Forgive him.

  1393. Oh,

  1394. forgive,

  1395. they cry.

  1396. Nor let

  1397. that ransom

  1398. sinner die.

  1399. Friends,

  1400. the priestly

  1401. office of

  1402. Jesus has

  1403. achieved our

  1404. salvation.

  1405. He stands

  1406. not only with

  1407. us, but for

  1408. us before

  1409. God so

  1410. that we

  1411. can know

  1412. him.

  1413. I pray,

  1414. I pray for

  1415. our church

  1416. regularly that

  1417. we would be

  1418. a church that

  1419. in light of

  1420. this would be

  1421. able to be

  1422. free, free

  1423. to confess

  1424. our sins and

  1425. our failures,

  1426. free to

  1427. forsake a

  1428. life of

  1429. performing and

  1430. looking good

  1431. on the

  1432. outside,

  1433. free to

  1434. come together

  1435. as a

  1436. community

  1437. with a

  1438. high priest

  1439. who sympathizes

  1440. with our

  1441. weakness,

  1442. and to

  1443. take hold

  1444. of this

  1445. salvation that

  1446. we have in

  1447. Christ,

  1448. so that we

  1449. might love

  1450. one another,

  1451. so that we

  1452. might serve

  1453. the living God

  1454. together,

  1455. not hiding,

  1456. not despairing,

  1457. but worshiping

  1458. and rejoicing,

  1459. resting in

  1460. Jesus, our

  1461. great high

  1462. priest.

  1463. Let's pray.

  1464. Father, we

  1465. do pray

  1466. with

  1467. thanksgiving for

  1468. the offering

  1469. you have made

  1470. of your

  1471. son, Lord,

  1472. that he

  1473. willingly gave

  1474. himself up for

  1475. us, and

  1476. Lord, we

  1477. thank you

  1478. that even

  1479. today he

  1480. ever lives

  1481. to intercede

  1482. for us,

  1483. that his

  1484. blood speaks

  1485. and covers

  1486. our sin.

  1487. For all who

  1488. have placed

  1489. their faith in

  1490. Christ, this

  1491. is great news.

  1492. God, I pray

  1493. this morning if

  1494. there's anyone

  1495. here who has

  1496. not placed their

  1497. faith in Jesus

  1498. Christ, has

  1499. not taken

  1500. hold of this

  1501. high priest to

  1502. be theirs,

  1503. has not

  1504. trusted in

  1505. this sacrifice

  1506. that he

  1507. offered of

  1508. his own

  1509. life.

  1510. Lord, I

  1511. pray that

  1512. they would

  1513. repent,

  1514. repent of

  1515. their performance

  1516. and their

  1517. good works,

  1518. repent and

  1519. believe in

  1520. this Jesus,

  1521. and know the

  1522. joy of his

  1523. salvation.

  1524. Lord, I

  1525. pray for us

  1526. as a church

  1527. community that

  1528. you might make

  1529. us a community

  1530. that does not

  1531. need to run

  1532. or hide, but

  1533. Lord, can

  1534. rest in the

  1535. finished work of

  1536. Christ for us,

  1537. that all has

  1538. been done for

  1539. us, and now

  1540. we may live,

  1541. Lord, a new

  1542. and a different

  1543. life for you.

  1544. Lord, not

  1545. hiding our

  1546. weaknesses, but

  1547. confessing our

  1548. sin to one

  1549. another, and

  1550. knowing that in

  1551. Christ we have

  1552. the joyful

  1553. forgiveness and

  1554. the cleansing

  1555. of our

  1556. consciences that

  1557. we need so

  1558. desperately.

  1559. We pray these

  1560. things in Jesus'

  1561. name.

  1562. Amen.

  1563. God bless you.
