  1. Great. Well, we are looking at the book of 2 Samuel tonight, chapter 16.

  2. So that's page 267 in the Black Pew Bibles in front of you.

  3. Let me invite you to turn there with me.

  4. We are working through a sermon series in the book of 2 Samuel.

  5. We got through chapter 15 last year, took a little break for the holidays,

  6. and then we'll finish it up by Easter time.

  7. And while you're turning there, let me point out too,

  8. in the pews in front of you is a new sermon card for the sermon series in the coming months.

  9. So you can take one of those home actually.

  10. You can stick it on your fridge or wherever you stick things in your life.

  11. You can take a picture of it and put it on your phone and then throw it away

  12. or whatever you do with things these days.

  13. You can follow along so you know it's coming up.

  14. So you can read the passage in the week and be prepared for Sundays.

  15. Once we're done with 2 Samuel, we're going to celebrate Easter

  16. and then we're actually going to be preaching through the middle portion of the Gospel of Luke

  17. and thinking about discipleship, discipleship in the real world.

  18. As Jesus leads his followers to Jerusalem in the Gospel of Luke,

  19. he teaches them about what it means to follow him.

  20. So that's kind of where we're going in the next few months.

  21. Tonight, we're looking at 2 Samuel.

  22. So as we approach this passage tonight, I think we'll find it fruitful if we pause first

  23. and think about a time in your life when maybe you were at a moment of weakness or vulnerability

  24. and someone actually took advantage of you or maybe even manipulated you, deceived you,

  25. or tricked you in some way, sort of took advantage of you in a moment of weakness.

  26. Or even think about a time when someone maybe unjustly accused you or criticized you

  27. for something that you didn't do or came at you in a way that was full of misrepresentations and untruth.

  28. Or think about a time even when maybe someone betrayed you,

  29. like a close friend or a colleague or even a spouse or a brother or sister.

  30. Or think about a time when someone that you loved and trusted betrayed your trust

  31. and abandoned you and worked for your hurt and not for your good.

  32. If you get a personal experience like that in mind, as unpleasant as it is,

  33. with all the emotion and all the anguish and all the anger and hurt that it brings up,

  34. then I think you'll be able to connect with our passage tonight.

  35. Because in our text tonight, David is experiencing all of those things.

  36. David in this chapter endures all sorts of unjust reproach and betrayal.

  37. At this point in his life's story, he's on the run from his son Absalom.

  38. He's fleeing the city of Jerusalem, the capital.

  39. And in chapter 15 that we looked at before the holidays,

  40. we found that David in his flight was greeted mostly by friends along the way.

  41. But now here in chapter 16, he's greeted not by his friends, but by his foes.

  42. And the chapter ends with him having been manipulated and cursed and betrayed.

  43. So as we dive into this chapter, I want us to think about three things, three questions.

  44. First, why does all this happen to David?

  45. And why do things like this happen to us?

  46. Second, how does David respond to this harsh reality?

  47. And then third, how can we today respond similarly?

  48. So that's where we're going.

  49. Let's read 2 Samuel chapter 16.

    2 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  50. When David had passed a little beyond the summit, that is the summit of the Mount of Olives,

  51. which was east of Jerusalem.

  52. David's, remember, on the run from his son Absalom.

  53. When David had passed a little beyond the summit, Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, met him

  54. with a couple of donkeys saddled bearing 200 loaves of bread and 100 bunches of raisins

  55. and 100 of summer fruits and a skin of wine.

  56. And the king said to Ziba, why have you brought these?

  57. Ziba answered, the donkeys are for the king's household to ride on, the bread and summer

  58. fruit for the young men to eat, and the wine for those who faint in the wilderness to drink.

  59. And the king said, and where is your master's son?

  60. Ziba said to the king, behold, he remains in Jerusalem.

  61. For he said, today the house of Israel will give me back the kingdom of my father.

  62. Then the king said to Ziba, behold, all that belonged to Mephibosheth is now yours.

  63. And Ziba said, I pay homage.

  64. Let me ever find favor in your sight, my lord, the king.

  65. When David came to Baharim, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul,

  66. whose name was Shimei, the son of Gerah.

  67. And as he came, he cursed continually.

  68. Then he threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David.

  69. And all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

  70. And Shimei said as he cursed, get out, get out, you man of blood, you worthless man.

  71. The Lord has avenged on you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned.

  72. And the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom.

  73. See, your evil is on you, for you are a man of blood.

  74. Then Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, said to the king, why should this dead dog curse my lord, the king?

  75. Let me go over and take off his head.

  76. But the king said, what have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah?

  77. If he is cursing because the Lord has said to him, curse David, who then shall say, why have you done so?

  78. And David said to Abishai and to all his servants, behold, my own son seeks my life.

  79. How much more may now this Benjaminite leave him alone and let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.

  80. It may be that the Lord will look on the wrong done to me and that the Lord will repay me with good for his cursing today.

  81. So David and his men went on the road with Shimei, while Shimei went along on the hillside opposite him and cursed as he went and threw stones at him and flung dust.

  82. And the king and all the people who were with him arrived weary at the Jordan.

  83. And there he refreshed himself.

  84. Now Absalom and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem and Ahithophel with him.

  85. And when Hushai the archite, David's friend, came to Absalom, Hushai said to Absalom, long live the king, long live the king.

  86. And Absalom said to Hushai, is this your loyalty to your friend?

  87. Why did you not go with your friend?

  88. And Hushai said to Absalom, no, for whom the Lord and the people and all the men of Israel have chosen,

  89. his I will be and with him I will remain.

  90. And again, whom should I serve?

  91. Should it not be his son?

  92. As I have served your father, so I will serve you.

  93. Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, give your counsel.

  94. What shall we do?

  95. Ahithophel said to Absalom, go into your father's concubines, whom he has left to keep the house.

  96. And all Israel will hear that you have made yourself a stench to your father and the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened.

  97. So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof and Absalom went into his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.

  98. Now in those days, the counsel that Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the word of God.

  99. So was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed both by David and by Absalom.

  100. Let's pray together.

  101. God, give us your spirit, we pray tonight, so that we might understand the message of this text,

  102. apply it well to our lives, so that we might live in line with the truth of your word,

  103. and the truth of your good news, the gospel.

  104. Help us, we pray.

  105. Amen.

  106. So as we said, David in this chapter experiences some of the hardest human relational experiences,

  107. I think, that we go through.

  108. He's tricked, he's cursed, and in the end he's betrayed.

  109. Now, at first, it's kind of hard to parse things out, but he's tricked, you see, by Ziba,

  110. the first one he meets.

  111. We met Ziba actually back in chapter 9.

  112. He was a servant in Saul's household, the king that preceded David,

  113. and David gave to Ziba the stewardship over what was left of Saul's house and his ancestral property,

  114. and in particular, David gave Ziba as a servant to Saul's remaining heir, Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth.

  115. And Mephibosheth, you remember, had been injured as a child and was lame in both of his feet.

  116. And at first glance, it seems like Ziba's doing David a great favor, right?

  117. Here he is providing tasty food and drink and transportation to David and his followers

  118. when they're weary and weak on their trek into the wilderness.

  119. But, you know, when we read the rest of the story of 2 Samuel,

  120. especially if you were to skip ahead and read chapter 19,

  121. we learn that Ziba's intentions here are not what they seem.

  122. Ziba claims that his master, Mephibosheth, has abandoned David and gone over to Absalom,

  123. but we'll find later that that's simply just not true.

  124. Mephibosheth has, it seems, remained loyal to David,

  125. and here Ziba is taking advantage of David's position of weakness and need,

  126. showing up with gifts,

  127. lying about his master,

  128. all in order to manipulate David into giving him the rights over Mephibosheth's property.

  129. The commentator Matthew Henry wrote,

  130. no longer content to be the manager,

  131. Ziba wants to be the master.

  132. And for the time being, it works.

  133. David believes the story,

  134. he receives the gifts,

  135. and is deceived.

  136. The next person David meets is Shimei,

  137. a descendant of Saul,

  138. who curses David.

  139. That is, he sort of calls down God's, you know, wrath upon his head,

  140. calling him a man of blood,

  141. saying that he deserves all that's happening to him

  142. because he butchered Saul's family on his way to being the king.

  143. Now, of course, if you've been following the story of 1 and 2 Samuel,

  144. you know, actually, that Shimei's accusation isn't true.

  145. David actually has dealt incredibly honorably towards Saul and his family.

  146. I mean, you remember all those times in 1 Samuel

  147. when David refuses to lift his hands against Saul.

  148. So this reproach that Shimei flings at David along with all the stones and all the dirt,

  149. it's all unjust, it's all undeserved.

  150. And then lastly here, there's the episode with Hushai and Ahithophel.

  151. Now, Hushai in these final paragraphs comes to Jerusalem

  152. actually as a spy on behalf of David.

  153. So the one guy that looks like he is selling David out

  154. is actually on David's side in this chapter.

  155. He's winning his way into Absalom's court,

  156. hoping to be something of kind of a fifth column

  157. to undermine Absalom,

  158. or at least to be sort of an inside pair of eyes and ears

  159. for David who's had to run into the wilderness.

  160. You can look back in chapter 15

  161. to see how David and Hushai sort of plotted

  162. this risky counterinsurgence maneuver

  163. that Hushai is all about here.

  164. And next week, we're going to see how that goes

  165. in chapter 17.

  166. But then there's this character of Ahithophel,

  167. who at one point was David's trusted and esteemed counselor,

  168. his right-hand man.

  169. And we find that Ahithophel sides with Absalom's insurrection.

  170. And he tells Absalom to do what?

  171. To go up on the roof and to sleep with David's concubines.

  172. And that that would be a sign to all of the city

  173. that Absalom is now in control of all that was David's,

  174. down to his very household, down to his very bedroom.

  175. Absalom owns it all.

  176. In other words, Ahithophel totally betrays David.

  177. Now, why does all this happen to David?

  178. And why does it happen to us?

  179. Live life for any length of time

  180. and you experience people who will try to trick you

  181. when you're weak, curse you when you're innocent,

  182. and even betray us because we're no longer useful to them

  183. when something better comes along, right?

  184. Now, you might ask, why?

  185. Why does that happen?

  186. Now, sometimes these things happen

  187. because of consequences for our own actions, right?

  188. David had blown it big time with Bathsheba,

  189. and he'd even blown it in his relationship

  190. with Absalom himself.

  191. And now, maybe we might think

  192. that David is reaping more of what he's sown.

  193. But you know, that doesn't explain all of it,

  194. either for David or for us,

  195. and it doesn't explain what's going on here in 16.

  196. I mean, think of it.

  197. Absalom's revolt is connected to David's failure and sin.

  198. There's no getting around that.

  199. We looked at that in chapter 15.

  200. David mourns for his sin.

  201. He experienced the Lord's discipline there.

  202. But you know, here in chapter 16,

  203. it's not like Ziba's trickery

  204. or Shimei's cursing

  205. or even Ahithophel's betrayal

  206. are necessarily the result of what David did.

  207. They're not logically connected to that

  208. in any intimate way.

  209. And so we need to see that sometimes

  210. we are going to undergo betrayal

  211. and cursing and even manipulation

  212. simply because we live in a fallen world.

  213. We live in a fallen world

  214. and it's full of people like ourselves

  215. who are fallen and who are sinful.

  216. Why does all this happen to David?

  217. Because tragically,

  218. this is kind of how life goes

  219. in the fallen world.

  220. We'll be sinned against.

  221. The life of the saint, you see, friends,

  222. will not be a rosy walk

  223. through fields and streams all the time

  224. smelling the glad roses.

  225. There will be descents.

  226. David is going down the Mount of Olives

  227. and figuratively,

  228. he's sort of heading down

  229. in all of these ways.

  230. There will be valleys of darkness and betrayal.

  231. And I think it's good to be reminded of this

  232. so we aren't taken so by surprise.

  233. You know, oftentimes in our spiritual life,

  234. I think that we're like a football player

  235. who's running with the ball down the field

  236. and then suddenly we get shocked

  237. that someone from the other team

  238. is trying to tackle us.

  239. What are they doing?

  240. Why is this happening to me?

  241. Why are they trying to crush

  242. every bone in my body?

  243. Well, that's just the reality

  244. of the game of football.

  245. When you got the ball,

  246. people are coming to get you.

  247. And friends, Jesus is very clear

  248. that there would be times

  249. when his followers would be ridiculed,

  250. falsely accused, and betrayed.

  251. In essence, Jesus tells his followers,

  252. look, if they rejected me,

  253. there will be times

  254. when you too are rejected.

  255. And I think that means that

  256. we shouldn't really sort of shake our fist at God

  257. when people do sinful things against us.

  258. Of course, we can and should

  259. lament and cry out to God.

  260. We should vent our emotions to him.

  261. We should do that.

  262. We should come to him

  263. with all that we're feeling

  264. and all that we're experiencing.

  265. And yet we should remember

  266. that God told us

  267. these things would happen

  268. and he's worked to prepare us.

  269. And that this is a sad and grim reality

  270. of living in a fallen world

  271. amidst fallen people

  272. just like ourselves.

  273. People will manipulate

  274. and curse and betray.

  275. And yet, friends,

  276. isn't it helpful to know

  277. that God's king,

  278. both then and now,

  279. isn't immune

  280. to knowing firsthand

  281. what that's like?

  282. You see,

  283. David could be

  284. the sort of king he was,

  285. compassionate and strong,

  286. understanding

  287. and yet full of vision.

  288. He could be the sort of king he was

  289. because he knew

  290. what it was like

  291. to suffer the worst from people,

  292. because he knew

  293. exactly what it was like

  294. to stand in the shoes

  295. of the people that he led.

  296. And friends,

  297. how much more

  298. do we have that sort of king

  299. today in the Lord Jesus

  300. who knows what it's like

  301. to walk in our shoes?

  302. And how much more

  303. can we trust him

  304. to be a faithful

  305. and knowing

  306. and loving

  307. and trustworthy king

  308. over us?

  309. So how should we respond then?

  310. If this is kind of

  311. an inevitable thing,

  312. how do we deal with it?

  313. This is the second thing

  314. that we see in our text here.

  315. And I think we see it most

  316. in David's response

  317. to Shimei.

  318. David's being unjustly cursed here.

  319. Insults, rocks, dirt

  320. all come raining down

  321. on David's head.

  322. And when this happens to us,

  323. I think our response

  324. is often more like Abishai

  325. than like David, right?

  326. What does Abishai say

  327. in verse 9?

  328. Essentially,

  329. how dare he?

  330. This guy's a dead dog.

  331. Now, if you were an Israelite,

  332. you didn't like dogs.

  333. They were filthy and mangy

  334. and they were sort of scavengers.

  335. And like doubly worse

  336. would be a dead dog

  337. because you weren't supposed

  338. to touch dead things

  339. as an ancient Israelite.

  340. So this guy is like

  341. the lowest of the low

  342. in Abishai's viewing.

  343. How dare this dead dog

  344. curse my lord, the king?

  345. And then what does Abishai say?

  346. I've got an easy way

  347. to fix this problem, David.

  348. Let me go over

  349. and take off his head.

  350. Done.

  351. No one's going to get hit

  352. with stones.

  353. No one's going to get

  354. with dirt.

  355. I'm just going to kill him.

  356. This seems to be Abishai's

  357. kind of MO,

  358. his standard way of operating.

  359. You remember back

  360. in our first Samuel series,

  361. Abishai was the guy

  362. who snuck into Saul's

  363. sleeping camp with David

  364. in the middle of the night

  365. and said,

  366. David, let me pin Saul

  367. to the ground

  368. with my spear

  369. while he sleeps.

  370. Trust me,

  371. I'm not going to have

  372. to throw twice.

  373. I'll hit him the first time.

  374. Right?

  375. So this is Abishai.

  376. But you know,

  377. isn't that how often

  378. we respond

  379. to criticism

  380. and reproach?

  381. If there's any amount

  382. of inaccuracy

  383. in the criticism,

  384. any amount

  385. of getting the facts wrong,

  386. okay,

  387. we don't literally

  388. take off their head.

  389. But don't we often think,

  390. how dare you?

  391. And then proceed

  392. maybe to figuratively

  393. take off their head?

  394. Think about it.

  395. The last time

  396. someone charged you

  397. with a failure

  398. or a shortcoming,

  399. the last time

  400. someone corrected

  401. or criticized you,

  402. how did you respond?

  403. Were you defensive?

  404. Did you lash back?

  405. Did you walk away

  406. in anger

  407. and refuse to listen?

  408. That's often how I do it.

  409. Did you think of all

  410. the stupid

  411. and wrong things

  412. that they were guilty of?

  413. But look how David responds.

  414. Two things.

  415. First,

  416. surprisingly,

  417. he listens.

  418. And he listens

  419. as if

  420. this could maybe

  421. be God's word

  422. to him.

  423. See that in verse 10

  424. and verse 11.

  425. David is open

  426. to the possibility

  427. that this cursing

  428. may have been prompted

  429. by the Lord.

  430. That is,

  431. that the Lord

  432. may have something

  433. for David

  434. to actually hear in it.

  435. Even though,

  436. and get this,

  437. even though,

  438. as David points out

  439. in verse 12,

  440. that it is

  441. an unjust accusation.

  442. Okay.

  443. Even though

  444. it's a wrong

  445. being done to him,

  446. David still

  447. attends to it

  448. as if there's still

  449. something for him

  450. to hear.

  451. Something that he

  452. needs to hear.

  453. Friends,

  454. I think this is how

  455. we ought often

  456. to approach

  457. even some of the

  458. most unjust

  459. criticism that we face.

  460. With the humility

  461. that even if

  462. it's loaded

  463. with hatred

  464. and falsehood,

  465. that there might

  466. still be something

  467. that God has

  468. for us in it.

  469. after all,

  470. think about it,

  471. David did not

  472. spill the blood

  473. of Saul's house.

  474. That was an unjust

  475. accusation.

  476. David did not

  477. deserve that curse,

  478. but

  479. did he not

  480. still

  481. spill

  482. innocent blood

  483. when he sent

  484. Bathsheba's husband

  485. Uriah

  486. to the front lines

  487. with a letter

  488. in his hand

  489. to Joab

  490. telling Joab

  491. to pull back

  492. the forces

  493. when you get

  494. into the thick

  495. of battle

  496. so that Uriah

  497. gets killed.

  498. David did have

  499. blood on his hands.

  500. He knew it

  501. to be true.

  502. So he heard

  503. the rebuke

  504. because he knew

  505. he was a sinner

  506. and he knew

  507. he wasn't perfect.

  508. Now friends,

  509. maybe you've been

  510. criticized.

  511. Are you willing

  512. to hear

  513. what's true

  514. in it?

  515. Even if it's

  516. surrounded

  517. by a lot

  518. of falsehood,

  519. even if a lot

  520. of it is

  521. ungrounded?

  522. Are you

  523. willing to

  524. listen to

  525. what God

  526. might be

  527. saying even

  528. through all

  529. the radio

  530. static and

  531. through all

  532. the stones

  533. and dirt

  534. that are

  535. falling down

  536. on your

  537. head?

  538. And what's

  539. the result?

  540. The result

  541. of David

  542. doing this

  543. is actually

  544. that he

  545. avoids

  546. more bloodshed

  547. by just

  548. receiving

  549. the rebuke.

  550. Abishai

  551. doesn't take

  552. off

  553. Shimei's

  554. head.

  555. Now,

  556. it's not

  557. that we

  558. shouldn't

  559. ever seek

  560. to correct

  561. misunderstandings

  562. or clarify

  563. what's true.

  564. We should

  565. do that.

  566. We should

  567. do it

  568. calmly,

  569. peaceably.

  570. But friends,

  571. how much

  572. more figurative

  573. bloodshed

  574. and back

  575. and forth

  576. and grudges

  577. and bitterness

  578. in our

  579. relationships

  580. and in our

  581. churches

  582. and our

  583. communities

  584. and in our

  585. marriages

  586. and in our

  587. friendships,

  588. how much

  589. of that

  590. would be

  591. avoided

  592. if we

  593. would learn

  594. to hear

  595. and listen

  596. to rebukes

  597. even if

  598. they happen

  599. to be a

  600. little unjust?

  601. You know,

  602. the next thing

  603. that David

  604. does in the

  605. face of all

  606. this is that

  607. he doesn't

  608. just listen.

  609. This is

  610. important.

  611. He also

  612. entrusts

  613. himself to

  614. God's

  615. justice,

  616. you see.

  617. Look at

  618. verse 12.

  619. David is

  620. confident

  621. that whatever

  622. unjust

  623. cursing he

  624. endures,

  625. the Lord

  626. will repay

  627. him with

  628. good for

  629. the evil

  630. that he's

  631. received.

  632. It reminds

  633. me of

  634. Jesus'

  635. teaching in

  636. the Sermon

  637. on the

  638. Mount,

  639. doesn't

  640. it?

  641. Matthew

  642. 5,

  643. 11.

  644. Jesus

  645. says,

  646. blessed

  647. are you

  648. when others

  649. revile you

  650. and persecute

  651. you and

  652. utter all

  653. kinds of

  654. evil against

  655. you falsely

  656. on my

  657. account.

  658. Rejoice

  659. and be

  660. glad,

  661. Jesus

  662. says.

  663. Why?

  664. For

  665. your

  666. reward is

  667. great in

  668. heaven.

  669. For

  670. so they

  671. persecuted

  672. the prophets

  673. who were

  674. before you.

  675. When we

  676. face this

  677. kind of

  678. unjust

  679. cursing,

  680. criticism,

  681. reproach,

  682. even betrayal

  683. or manipulation,

  684. you see,

  685. friends,

  686. we can

  687. respond with

  688. courage and

  689. with composure

  690. because we

  691. know that

  692. God will

  693. look at

  694. the wrong

  695. done to

  696. us and

  697. one day he

  698. will repay

  699. us with

  700. good.

  701. he will

  702. make things

  703. right.

  704. That is

  705. the sort

  706. of God

  707. he is.

  708. There is

  709. no hurt

  710. or no

  711. loss or

  712. no betrayal

  713. or no

  714. curse that

  715. has come

  716. down upon

  717. the head

  718. of the

  719. Christian

  720. that will

  721. not ultimately

  722. be made

  723. right and

  724. repaid with

  725. good in

  726. God's

  727. kingdom.

  728. God's

  729. God's

  730. resurrection.

  731. In other

  732. words,

  733. every cross,

  734. friends,

  735. will be met

  736. with a

  737. resurrection.

  738. Lastly,

  739. then,

  740. seeing how

  741. David responds,

  742. where in the

  743. world do we

  744. get the kind

  745. of emotional

  746. and spiritual

  747. wealth to

  748. do all

  749. this?

  750. How

  751. possibly can

  752. we listen

  753. and can we

  754. trust God's

  755. justice in all

  756. these ways?

  757. Where do we

  758. get the inner

  759. strength to

  760. respond this

  761. way?

  762. To not be

  763. like Abishai

  764. and want to

  765. just rip

  766. people's

  767. heads off?

  768. Or,

  769. on the other

  770. hand,

  771. right,

  772. or to

  773. respond in

  774. the opposite

  775. way by

  776. just giving

  777. up when

  778. we're

  779. criticized or

  780. when we're

  781. betrayed,

  782. by just

  783. crumpling and

  784. folding and

  785. refusing to

  786. go on.

  787. Notice that's

  788. not David's

  789. response either.

  790. He presses on

  791. to the Jordan

  792. in this text.

  793. He keeps

  794. going.

  795. He doesn't

  796. give up.

  797. Well,

  798. one of the

  799. great things

  800. about this

  801. chapter is

  802. that it's

  803. one of those

  804. episodes in

  805. David's life

  806. where we're

  807. actually given

  808. an inside

  809. look into

  810. David's heart,

  811. into David's

  812. spiritual life.

  813. And the

  814. place where

  815. we're given

  816. that is in

  817. the book of

  818. the Psalms,

  819. in Psalm

    Psalms 3 chapter mention

  820. chapter 3,

  821. which is

  822. attributed to

  823. this very

  824. moment in

  825. David's life.

  826. So let's

  827. look there

  828. actually.

  829. Turn with

  830. me.

  831. It's page

  832. 448 in

  833. the Pew

  834. Bible.

  835. Let's look

  836. at Psalm

  837. 3 together

  838. and see

  839. the sort

  840. of secret

  841. of David's

  842. composure

  843. in the

  844. midst of

  845. reproach.

  846. Psalm

  847. 3,

  848. page

  849. 448.

  850. Let me

  851. begin reading

  852. this for

  853. us.

  854. David

  855. writes,

  856. O Lord,

  857. how many

  858. are my

  859. foes?

  860. Many

  861. are rising

  862. against

  863. me.

  864. Many

  865. are saying

  866. of my

  867. soul,

  868. there's

  869. no salvation

  870. for God,

  871. for him

  872. and God.

  873. So what's

  874. David doing

  875. right off

  876. the bat?

  877. He's

  878. crying out

  879. to God.

  880. He's

  881. praying.

  882. And friends,

  883. that should

  884. tell us

  885. that prayer

  886. is not

  887. some sort

  888. of luxury

  889. activity

  890. for when

  891. we happen

  892. to get

  893. some free

  894. time and

  895. we're feeling

  896. sort of extra

  897. spiritual.

  898. Okay,

  899. I'll pray

  900. now.

  901. No,

  902. friends,

  903. prayer is

  904. a lifeline

  905. in the

  906. trenches

  907. of the

  908. warfare

  909. of life.

  910. And David

  911. lays it all

  912. out before

  913. God.

  914. He's not

  915. sugarcoating

  916. one thing.

  917. He says,

  918. Lord,

  919. how many

  920. are my

  921. foes?

  922. Verse 3,

  923. But you,

  924. O Lord,

  925. are a

  926. shield

  927. about me,

  928. my glory

  929. and the

  930. lifter

  931. of my

  932. head.

  933. I cried

  934. aloud to

  935. the Lord

  936. and he

  937. answered me

  938. from his

  939. holy hill.

  940. Now notice

  941. here,

  942. David's

  943. protection

  944. and David's

  945. security,

  946. his shield,

  947. right?

  948. That's what a

  949. shield is.

  950. His worth,

  951. his glory,

  952. his dignity

  953. and honor,

  954. the lifter

  955. of my

  956. head.

  957. His

  958. protection,

  959. his worth,

  960. his dignity,

  961. they're not

  962. in what people

  963. think of

  964. him,

  965. are they?

  966. They're not

  967. ultimately

  968. in how great

  969. David's

  970. circumstances

  971. are.

  972. Where then

  973. are they?

  974. You,

  975. O Lord,

  976. are my

  977. shield

  978. and my

  979. glory.

  980. Yeah?

  981. And as

  982. David cries

  983. to God

  984. in prayer,

  985. he says,

  986. God answered

  987. me.

  988. Now,

  989. God did

  990. not answer

  991. him by

  992. changing

  993. his

  994. circumstances,

  995. right?

  996. 2 Samuel 16,

  997. it's not like

  998. at the end,

  999. poof,

  1000. magically,

  1001. David's totally

  1002. vindicated.

  1003. Things get

  1004. bad.

  1005. Things are

  1006. going to

  1007. get a

  1008. little even

  1009. worse in

  1010. the story

  1011. here before

  1012. they get

  1013. better.

  1014. But still

  1015. God answers.

  1016. Deep in

  1017. David's soul

  1018. in this

  1019. moment,

  1020. he gets

  1021. a divine

  1022. assurance

  1023. that the

  1024. Lord is

  1025. with him.

  1026. In prayer,

  1027. God speaks

  1028. to his

  1029. heart and

  1030. comforts

  1031. him and

  1032. gives him

  1033. strength.

  1034. Look at

  1035. verse 5.

  1036. I lay

  1037. down and

  1038. slept.

  1039. I woke

  1040. again,

  1041. for the

  1042. Lord

  1043. sustained

  1044. me.

  1045. I will

  1046. not be

  1047. afraid of

  1048. many

  1049. thousands

  1050. of people

  1051. who have

  1052. set

  1053. themselves

  1054. against

  1055. me

  1056. all

  1057. around.

  1058. Arise,

  1059. O Lord,

  1060. save me,

  1061. O my

  1062. God,

  1063. for you

  1064. strike all

  1065. my enemies

  1066. on the

  1067. cheek.

  1068. You break

  1069. the teeth

  1070. of the

  1071. wicked.

  1072. Salvation

  1073. belongs to

  1074. the Lord.

  1075. Your

  1076. blessing be

  1077. on your

  1078. people.

  1079. David here

  1080. knows and

  1081. acknowledges and

  1082. prays and

  1083. recognizes that

  1084. God will not

  1085. allow evil to

  1086. triumph forever.

  1087. Salvation,

  1088. he says,

  1089. belongs to

  1090. the Lord.

  1091. It's part of

  1092. his essence.

  1093. It's part

  1094. of God's

  1095. nature to

  1096. be a

  1097. redeeming

  1098. God.

  1099. Belongs

  1100. to him.

  1101. Now,

  1102. friends,

  1103. if David

  1104. knew this,

  1105. deep in

  1106. his bones,

  1107. how much

  1108. more do

  1109. we,

  1110. or should

  1111. we?

  1112. You know,

  1113. David had

  1114. seen God

  1115. rescue him

  1116. time and

  1117. time again.

  1118. But haven't

  1119. you and I

  1120. seen God's

  1121. greatest act

  1122. of rescue?

  1123. Not just for

  1124. you and me

  1125. individually,

  1126. but for the

  1127. whole world

  1128. in Jesus

  1129. Christ.

  1130. Do we not

  1131. know the

  1132. king who

  1133. endured the

  1134. most unjust

  1135. reproach?

  1136. The king who

  1137. was truly

  1138. betrayed and

  1139. abandoned and

  1140. mocked and

  1141. scorned?

  1142. But unlike

  1143. David,

  1144. Jesus had no

  1145. sin and

  1146. there was no

  1147. ground for the

  1148. curses that he

  1149. received.

  1150. None whatsoever.

  1151. He was actually

  1152. completely innocent.

  1153. There was no

  1154. right for that

  1155. army of

  1156. shimmy eyes

  1157. who assaulted

  1158. Jesus in his

  1159. passion as

  1160. one after

  1161. another,

  1162. after another,

  1163. after another,

  1164. just flung

  1165. down curses

  1166. and rebuke

  1167. and reproach

  1168. on Jesus'

  1169. head when

  1170. he was arrested

  1171. and crucified.

  1172. And yet,

  1173. friends,

  1174. don't we know

  1175. that this

  1176. king who's

  1177. come and

  1178. born all

  1179. this unjust

  1180. cursing and

  1181. rebuke and

  1182. reproach,

  1183. don't we know

  1184. that he bore

  1185. these curses

  1186. for us?

  1187. The apostle

  1188. Paul writes

  1189. in the book

  1190. of Galatians,

  1191. Christ became

  1192. a curse

  1193. for us

  1194. so that we

  1195. might receive

  1196. God's blessing.

  1197. every curse

  1198. that you and

  1199. I deserved

  1200. because we're

  1201. sinners,

  1202. every curse

  1203. that the holy

  1204. law of God

  1205. would fling

  1206. and hurl

  1207. against us

  1208. righteously,

  1209. justly,

  1210. Christ himself

  1211. has absorbed

  1212. as our

  1213. substitute,

  1214. standing in

  1215. our place.

  1216. And Jesus

  1217. rose from the

  1218. grave to

  1219. prove that

  1220. that curse

  1221. had been

  1222. undone and

  1223. emptied.

  1224. And that

  1225. now,

  1226. instead of

  1227. God's curse

  1228. being upon

  1229. us,

  1230. it's God's

  1231. blessing that's

  1232. upon us.

  1233. Now God's

  1234. blessing is

  1235. for you

  1236. and for me

  1237. and for

  1238. everyone who

  1239. repents and

  1240. believes.

  1241. You see,

  1242. friends,

  1243. this is the

  1244. wellspring of

  1245. David's and

  1246. of our,

  1247. especially as

  1248. Christians.

  1249. This is the

  1250. wellspring of

  1251. it.

  1252. Now because of

  1253. what Jesus

  1254. has done,

  1255. the one

  1256. opinion that

  1257. actually matters,

  1258. the opinion of

  1259. God himself who

  1260. made you and

  1261. made me,

  1262. the opinion of

  1263. that God is

  1264. one of a

  1265. blessing over

  1266. us, of

  1267. approval and

  1268. love.

  1269. And now we

  1270. know that God

  1271. will always be

  1272. faithful to us

  1273. and never

  1274. betray us.

  1275. And that God

  1276. will always work

  1277. for our good and

  1278. never deceive us

  1279. or manipulate us.

  1280. and that God

  1281. will always

  1282. accept us

  1283. and never

  1284. curse us

  1285. no matter what

  1286. external circumstances

  1287. we might

  1288. experience.

  1289. Salvation

  1290. belongs to

  1291. the Lord.

  1292. Your blessing

  1293. be on your

  1294. people,

  1295. David says.

  1296. That's what

  1297. will give you

  1298. the inner

  1299. strength to

  1300. endure the

  1301. curses and

  1302. betrayals of

  1303. this life and

  1304. to respond in

  1305. humility and

  1306. courage when

  1307. they come.

  1308. David saw it

  1309. and tasted it

  1310. and experienced

  1311. it.

  1312. But you know,

  1313. in reality,

  1314. he did it from

  1315. afar.

  1316. He saw just

  1317. shadows of what

  1318. we know.

  1319. But we,

  1320. in Jesus Christ,

  1321. by the Holy

  1322. Spirit,

  1323. we see it up

  1324. close.

  1325. We see the

  1326. substance itself,

  1327. friends.

  1328. So why don't we

  1329. go to God in

  1330. prayer together

  1331. right now?

  1332. And let's ask

  1333. God to bury

  1334. the reality of

  1335. His salvation

  1336. deep in our

  1337. hearts so that

  1338. we can respond

  1339. like David did,

  1340. so that we

  1341. can respond

  1342. like people

  1343. of God's

  1344. kingdom,

  1345. so that we

  1346. can respond

  1347. like people

  1348. of the

  1349. King Jesus.

  1350. Let's pray

  1351. together.

  1352. Lord,

  1353. there's so

  1354. much that we

  1355. ought to be

  1356. bringing before

  1357. you in prayer

  1358. as we think

  1359. about this

  1360. text.

  1361. First,

  1362. God,

  1363. we want to

  1364. just pray

  1365. for your

  1366. comfort and

  1367. for your

  1368. strength to

  1369. be with those

  1370. of us who

  1371. are experiencing

  1372. some of the

  1373. realities that

  1374. David experienced

  1375. in this text.

  1376. Lord,

  1377. for those of

  1378. us who are

  1379. undergoing the

  1380. hurt of

  1381. betrayal or

  1382. of unjust

  1383. accusation,

  1384. for those who

  1385. have been

  1386. manipulated or

  1387. deceived,

  1388. God,

  1389. we ask for

  1390. your comfort

  1391. and your

  1392. strength to

  1393. be near to

  1394. them.

  1395. God,

  1396. we also pray

  1397. that you would

  1398. help us,

  1399. Lord,

  1400. in the midst

  1401. of those

  1402. trying times

  1403. to respond

  1404. with humility

  1405. and with

  1406. grace.

  1407. Lord,

  1408. not to

  1409. back down

  1410. from what's

  1411. true,

  1412. not to

  1413. shy away

  1414. from

  1415. clarifying

  1416. misunderstandings,

  1417. and yet,

  1418. God,

  1419. to approach

  1420. these things

  1421. with humility

  1422. and to

  1423. listen.

  1424. And,

  1425. God,

  1426. also to

  1427. trust

  1428. that you

  1429. will keep

  1430. account of

  1431. everyone

  1432. and make

  1433. all things

  1434. good in

  1435. the end.

  1436. God,

  1437. most of

  1438. all,

  1439. we pray

  1440. that what

  1441. is true

  1442. in Jesus

  1443. Christ,

  1444. for all

  1445. who believe,

  1446. that you

  1447. have loved

  1448. us and

  1449. blessed us,

  1450. God,

  1451. that you

  1452. are our

  1453. shield and

  1454. our glory

  1455. and the

  1456. lifter of

  1457. our heads.

  1458. Lord,

  1459. all that we

  1460. have in

  1461. you is so

  1462. rich and

  1463. so all

  1464. encompassing.

  1465. God,

  1466. that even

  1467. if we

  1468. experience

  1469. criticism

  1470. and reproach

  1471. and betrayal

  1472. Lord,

  1473. we have

  1474. a rock

  1475. that will

  1476. not move

  1477. because we

  1478. know Jesus

  1479. bore every

  1480. real curse

  1481. that could

  1482. ever undo

  1483. us.

  1484. Every curse

  1485. that could

  1486. really be

  1487. the end

  1488. of us,

  1489. he has

  1490. taken away

  1491. and the

  1492. blessing that

  1493. we need

  1494. is ours

  1495. in him.

  1496. Oh,

  1497. Father,

  1498. by your

  1499. spirit,

  1500. make these

  1501. things real

  1502. to us.

  1503. Help us

  1504. to sense

  1505. them and

  1506. know them

  1507. deep in

  1508. our bones.

  1509. And,

  1510. Lord,

  1511. help us

  1512. as a

  1513. community,

  1514. as a

  1515. church,

  1516. together,

  1517. to live

  1518. out this

  1519. kind of

  1520. peacemaking,

  1521. this kind

  1522. of humility.

  1523. Lord,

  1524. help it

  1525. to spread

  1526. beyond these

  1527. walls.

  1528. Help us

  1529. to be a

  1530. counterculture

  1531. in the

  1532. midst of

  1533. our

  1534. accusatory

  1535. culture

  1536. where

  1537. everyone's

  1538. fuse

  1539. seems to

  1540. be so

  1541. short.

  1542. Lord,

  1543. help us

  1544. to just

  1545. have a

  1546. wealth

  1547. of

  1548. patience

  1549. and

  1550. listening.

  1551. God,

  1552. help us

  1553. even to

  1554. endure

  1555. unjust

  1556. cursing

  1557. for the

  1558. sake of

  1559. your

  1560. kingdom.

  1561. knowing

  1562. that our

  1563. reward is

  1564. great in

  1565. heaven.

  1566. We look

  1567. to you,

  1568. Jesus,

  1569. for the

  1570. strength to

  1571. do this.

  1572. Thank you

  1573. that by

  1574. your spirit

  1575. you give

  1576. us just

  1577. that.

  1578. Amen.

  1579. Friends,

  1580. we're going

  1581. to continue

  1582. to respond

  1583. to God's

  1584. word by

  1585. singing and

  1586. praying and

  1587. praising together.

  1588. This song

  1589. that we're

  1590. going to

  1591. sing.
