  1. tonight.

  2. We're going to look at the end of 2 Samuel 19.

  3. That's page 271 in the Pew Bible. If you want to turn there, that'll be helpful.

  4. We'll kind of walk through this text together and see what God has for us here to learn

  5. tonight. Last week, Greg preached on 2 Samuel

  6. 18 and in the beginning of 19 where David mourned the death of Absalom. Tonight, we're going to

  7. look at the rest of that chapter. And what's going on in this chapter is

  8. this is 2 Samuel's account of David's return

  9. to Jerusalem after Absalom's rebellion has come to an end.

  10. In other words, David, the rightful king

  11. is coming home in this text.

  12. And the big question that's looming at this point in Israel's

  13. history is this. How will

  14. David restore unity and peace

  15. to the kingdom?

  16. How's he going to do that?

  17. The king of Israel, after all, was supposed to unify

  18. the nation of Israel in the praise of God.

  19. And actually,

  20. through Israel, the king was really

  21. supposed to unify and eventually unite

  22. all nations in the praise of God.

  23. But right now, at this point in the story,

  24. as we'll see in a second,

  25. David is not coming home to peace.

  26. He's coming home to a fragile

  27. and fractured

  28. and fearful people

  29. who are on the brink of chaos.

  30. My wife and I, as some of you know,

  31. have three young kids.

  32. And when I come home

  33. after work,

  34. when I come home,

  35. what I often find waiting for me

  36. when I step through the door is not peace,

  37. but chaos.

  38. The kids have been playing all day,

  39. so their toys are strewn all around the house.

  40. Dinner is cooking.

  41. Someone's crying.

  42. In short, the Lauer household

  43. around 5.15 p.m. is nuts.

  44. And my wife, Beth,

  45. she is very awesome.

  46. She's great with the kids.

  47. But, you know,

  48. I think anybody at the end of the day,

  49. you know,

  50. those three kids at the end of the day,

  51. they are just toast.

  52. They're ready to unravel.

  53. Of course,

  54. I would love for my kids

  55. to welcome me

  56. at the door

  57. and say,

  58. Oh, Daddy dearest,

  59. welcome home.

  60. We're so glad to see you.

  61. Look at how I've cleaned up all my toys

  62. and made all things ready

  63. for your arrival.

  64. Come, let me hand you

  65. your slippers.

  66. Take this warm cup of tea.

  67. Here's the newspaper.

  68. I shall not bother you

  69. until it be dinner time,

  70. Father.

  71. That, of course,

  72. is not how it goes.

  73. Isn't it the case

  74. that the fallen world

  75. that we live in

  76. does not naturally tend

  77. towards peace and wholeness?

  78. It tends towards

  79. fragmentation and chaos.

  80. I think that is a great sign

  81. of the fact

  82. that things are not the way

  83. they're supposed to be

  84. in our world.

  85. And David,

  86. when he returns,

  87. the kingdom is not stable

  88. and peaceful

  89. and unified.

  90. It's fragile

  91. and it's on the verge of chaos.

  92. So let's jump into this text.

  93. Let's read the first two paragraphs

  94. and let's see how David

  95. goes about making peace

  96. in this situation.

  97. End of verse 8.

  98. Now Israel.

  99. Now Israel had fled

  100. every man

  101. to his own home.

  102. Israel here refers

  103. to the northern tribes of Israel

  104. in the rest of this narrative.

  105. And they've fled

  106. to their homes

  107. because their army

  108. backing Absalom

  109. has just been crushed

  110. by David's army.

  111. So they've fled

  112. every man to his home.

  113. And all the people

  114. were arguing

  115. throughout all the tribes

  116. of Israel saying

  117. the king delivered us

  118. from the hand of our enemies

  119. and saved us from the hand

  120. of the Philistines

  121. and now he has fled

  122. out of the land from Absalom.

  123. But Absalom,

  124. who we anointed over us,

  125. is dead in battle.

  126. Now therefore,

  127. why do you say nothing

  128. about bringing the king back?

  129. You could hear them

  130. sort of arguing

  131. with one another.

  132. And King David

  133. sent this message

  134. to Zadok

  135. and Abiathar the priests.

  136. Say to the elders of Judah,

  137. these are the southern,

  138. this is the southern tribe,

  139. why should you be the last

  140. to bring the king

  141. back to his house

  142. when the word of all Israel

  143. has come to the king?

  144. David apparently

  145. has gotten word

  146. that the northern tribes

  147. are ready to bring him home.

  148. You are my brothers.

  149. You're my bone

  150. and my flesh.

  151. Why then should you

  152. be the last

  153. to bring back the king?

  154. And say to Amasa,

  155. are you not my bone

  156. and my flesh?

  157. God, do so to me

  158. and more also

  159. if you are not commander

  160. of my army from now on

  161. in place of Joab.

  162. And he,

  163. that is David,

  164. swayed the heart

  165. of all the men of Judah

  166. as one man

  167. so that they sent word

  168. to the king,

  169. return both you

  170. and all your servants.

  171. So the king came back

  172. to the Jordan

  173. and Judah came to Gilgal

  174. to meet the king

  175. and to bring him

  176. over to the Jordan.

  177. Okay, let's pause there.

  178. So we see the situation here.

  179. The people are scared.

  180. They're arguing

  181. as people who are scared

  182. often do.

  183. Some are obviously worried

  184. that if David comes back

  185. he'll punish them

  186. for rebelling.

  187. Others are probably thinking

  188. that if they don't

  189. welcome him back

  190. it will get even worse

  191. for them

  192. and they don't know

  193. what to do.

  194. And if you think about it

  195. on a broader

  196. sort of political level,

  197. the nation's

  198. in a pretty dangerous

  199. place right now.

  200. They're fragmented.

  201. They're alienated

  202. from their king

  203. who was basically

  204. the military leader

  205. at that time.

  206. They're in the aftermath

  207. of a civil war.

  208. This is just the sort of thing

  209. that an Egypt

  210. or Assyria

  211. or the Philistine armies

  212. would love

  213. to just come rumbling

  214. into Israelite territory

  215. and take advantage

  216. of their weakened condition.

  217. They're in a dangerous spot.

  218. And even Judah,

  219. David's own tribe here,

  220. is uncertain

  221. of what to do.

  222. They too, remember,

  223. went over to Absalom.

  224. But David here,

  225. not wanting

  226. the nation

  227. to be fractured,

  228. wanting them

  229. to be unified,

  230. appeals to Judah

  231. for them not to be

  232. left out or left behind

  233. when he returns

  234. to Jerusalem.

  235. Why should you be

  236. the last to welcome me back?

  237. Aren't we

  238. bone of bone

  239. and flesh of flesh?

  240. And then David

  241. does something

  242. really surprising.

  243. As a sign

  244. of what they can expect

  245. when he comes home,

  246. what does he do?

  247. He makes a guy

  248. named Amasa

  249. the head of his army

  250. in the place of Joab.

  251. Now, you're thinking,

  252. who the heck is Amasa?

  253. What is that?

  254. What difference

  255. does that make?

  256. Well, Amasa, remember,

  257. was just recently

  258. the head of Absalom's army.

  259. This was the opposing general

  260. on the other side

  261. of the civil war.

  262. These were the guys

  263. David was just fighting against,

  264. the ones who just staged a coup

  265. and tried to kill him.

  266. He says, look,

  267. I'm going to extend

  268. an olive branch.

  269. Amasa is general now

  270. in the place of Joab.

  271. David's not going

  272. to enact revenge.

  273. He's going to work

  274. to rebuild the nation,

  275. even if that means

  276. demoting his long-standing

  277. general, Joab,

  278. and putting Amasa

  279. in his place.

  280. Okay, now this,

  281. these paragraphs

  282. are pretty introductory, actually.

  283. This kind of sets up

  284. the rest of the chapter

  285. and what's going to happen.

  286. On his way

  287. back to the Jordan

  288. and back to Jerusalem,

  289. David is going to have

  290. three encounters

  291. that sort of encapsulate

  292. or give a concrete picture

  293. of how David

  294. is going to try

  295. to restore peace

  296. to the nation,

  297. how he's going to try

  298. to be a peacemaker

  299. in the midst

  300. of this really fragile

  301. and fractious situation.

  302. And he's going to do

  303. two things.

  304. On the one hand,

  305. he's going to show mercy

  306. to his enemies,

  307. and on the other hand,

  308. he's going to show kindness

  309. and loyalty

  310. to his friends.

  311. And what the narrator

  312. of 2 Samuel

  313. is trying to show us here,

  314. he's trying to show us

  315. that this is what

  316. a real king looks like.

  317. Not someone

  318. who's power hungry,

  319. not someone

  320. who's vengeful,

  321. not someone

  322. who's self-serving.

  323. No.

  324. A real king

  325. is a peacemaker

  326. who's willing

  327. to extend mercy

  328. to his enemies

  329. and maintain loyalty

  330. with his friends.

  331. So we're going to see

  332. three episodes.

  333. Two of them

  334. are episodes of mercy

  335. and one of them

  336. loyalty to friends.

  337. So let's look at

  338. the first episode

  339. in 16.

  340. Verse 16.

  341. And Shimea,

  342. the son of Gerah,

  343. the Benjaminite

  344. from Baharim,

  345. hurried to come down

  346. with the men of Judah

  347. to meet King David.

  348. And with him

  349. were a thousand men

  350. from Benjamin.

  351. And Ziba,

  352. the servant of the house

  353. of Saul,

  354. with his 15 sons

  355. and his 20 servants,

  356. rushed down

  357. to the Jordan

  358. before the king.

  359. And they crossed the ford

  360. to bring over

  361. the king's household

  362. and to do his pleasure.

  363. And Shimea,

  364. the son of Gerah,

  365. fell down before the king

  366. as he was about

  367. to cross the Jordan.

  368. And he said to the king,

  369. let not my lord

  370. hold me guilty

  371. or remember

  372. how your servant

  373. did wrong

  374. on the day

  375. my lord the king

  376. left Jerusalem.

  377. Do not let the king

  378. take it to heart

  379. for your servant

  380. knows that I have sinned.

  381. Therefore behold,

  382. I have come this day

  383. the first of all

  384. the house of Joseph

  385. to come down

  386. to meet my lord the king.

  387. Abishai,

  388. the son of Zeruiah,

  389. answered,

  390. shall not Shimea

  391. be put to death

  392. for this

  393. because he cursed

  394. the lord's anointed?

  395. But David said,

  396. what have I to do

  397. with you,

  398. you sons of Zeruiah,

  399. that you should this day

  400. be an adversary to me?

  401. Shall anyone

  402. be put to death

  403. in Israel this day?

  404. For do I not know

  405. that I am this day

  406. king over Israel?

  407. And the king said

  408. to Shimea,

  409. you shall not die.

  410. And the king

  411. gave him his oath.

  412. Okay,

  413. so you'll remember

  414. this guy,

  415. Shimei,

  416. or Shimea,

  417. or however you pronounce it,

  418. however you want to pronounce it.

  419. You'll remember this guy

  420. from chapter 16,

  421. right?

  422. This is the guy

  423. who when David

  424. was running away

  425. from Absalom

  426. on his way out of the city

  427. showed up

  428. and just started cursing him

  429. and casting dirt

  430. on his head

  431. and calling him

  432. a ruthless,

  433. bloody man

  434. and said,

  435. you're getting

  436. what you deserve,

  437. David.

  438. And now

  439. that it looks like

  440. David is still going

  441. to be king after all,

  442. lo and behold,

  443. here comes Shimei

  444. as fast as he can

  445. to ask for forgiveness.

  446. Did you notice

  447. how the narrator said

  448. he hurried down

  449. to the Jordan

  450. and then he didn't just wait there

  451. for David to cross the Jordan,

  452. he went over the Jordan

  453. to get to David

  454. as quickly as he possibly could.

  455. And he asks for forgiveness.

  456. And Abishai,

  457. one of David's soldiers,

  458. gives David the same advice

  459. that he gave to David

  460. back in chapter 16.

  461. Do you remember that?

  462. Abishai said in chapter 16,

  463. David,

  464. I've got an easy solution here.

  465. Let's just take this guy's head off.

  466. Done.

  467. And Abishai is sort of like,

  468. you know,

  469. he's kind of a one-track-minded guy.

  470. He's like,

  471. hey,

  472. here's another opportunity,

  473. David.

  474. He's back.

  475. Let's kill him.

  476. But David again

  477. doesn't listen to Abishai.

  478. And instead,

  479. what does David do?

  480. He refrains

  481. from executing harsh judgment

  482. and he grants Shimei mercy.

  483. Now,

  484. was Shimei guilty?

  485. Of course.

  486. He cursed David

  487. up one side

  488. and down the other

  489. on his way out of Jerusalem.

  490. Was Shimei's repentance

  491. and apology sincere

  492. here in chapter 19?

  493. I mean,

  494. he sincerely wanted

  495. to save his own skin.

  496. That's for sure.

  497. Right?

  498. And if David had lost

  499. the war with Absalom,

  500. one wonders whether Shimei

  501. would have been so contrite.

  502. So I think we can question

  503. whether he's really

  504. that sincere here.

  505. But for all that,

  506. David still extends mercy.

  507. He keeps his cool

  508. and he acts with prudence

  509. for the sake

  510. of making peace

  511. in the nation.

  512. Now,

  513. I don't know about you,

  514. but I think

  515. of just how rare

  516. that kind of thing is.

  517. If you and I

  518. are given the chance

  519. to prove someone wrong

  520. or to make someone

  521. pay for wronging us,

  522. I mean,

  523. we often do it,

  524. don't we?

  525. And yet,

  526. David refrains.

  527. He affirms

  528. that what Shimei did

  529. was wrong,

  530. but at least for now

  531. he doesn't make him pay.

  532. And you have to ask,

  533. what is it

  534. that allows David

  535. to respond that way?

  536. How is he,

  537. I mean,

  538. he has every right,

  539. all the authority,

  540. certainly all the power

  541. at this moment

  542. to do exactly

  543. what his young friend

  544. is telling him to do.

  545. And yet,

  546. what allows David

  547. not to respond that way?

  548. Look again

  549. at the end of verse 21.

  550. For do I not know

  551. that I am this day

  552. king over Israel?

  553. What is David saying there?

  554. In other words,

  555. David is saying

  556. that he doesn't have

  557. to prove himself

  558. in this moment.

  559. And he doesn't have

  560. to send a message

  561. to his enemies

  562. and he doesn't have

  563. to nurse his wounded pride.

  564. He tells his young friend,

  565. look,

  566. I know I am the king

  567. right now

  568. and I don't need

  569. to do anything

  570. to prove it.

  571. He is so certain

  572. and so secure

  573. in that fact

  574. that he extends

  575. mercy to this guy.

  576. And he knows

  577. that as the king,

  578. there is a bigger job

  579. to do

  580. than just evening

  581. the score

  582. and making this guy

  583. pay for what he did.

  584. David, you see,

  585. has got this bigger agenda

  586. and he wants there

  587. to be peace

  588. and wholeness

  589. and unity

  590. in the people of God.

  591. And for that end,

  592. he extends this guy mercy.

  593. And friends,

  594. I think the same

  595. will be true of us.

  596. As you and I grow,

  597. in our assurance

  598. of our identity,

  599. not obviously

  600. as God's king,

  601. but certainly

  602. as God's children,

  603. as you and I

  604. become more and more

  605. assured of the fact

  606. that God knows us

  607. and loves us

  608. and has chosen us

  609. in Christ,

  610. the more and more

  611. we will have

  612. a deep wellspring

  613. to pull from

  614. and the more and more

  615. we'll find

  616. that our lives

  617. are caught up

  618. in a much bigger agenda

  619. than just getting even

  620. with the people

  621. who happen to cross us.

  622. In other words,

  623. I think as we sort of

  624. root ourselves

  625. in our identity

  626. of who God has made

  627. us to be in Christ,

  628. we actually get the power

  629. to become peacemakers

  630. and extend mercy

  631. the way David did.

  632. Well, let's look at

  633. the next meeting

  634. that David has

  635. where he again

  636. extends mercy,

  637. but this time

  638. it looks a little different.

  639. Pick up the story

  640. in verse 24.

  641. The narrator says,

  642. And Mephibosheth,

  643. the son of Saul,

  644. came down to meet the king.

  645. He had neither

  646. taken care of his feet

  647. nor trimmed his beard

  648. nor washed his clothes

  649. from the day the king

  650. departed until the day

  651. he came back in safety.

  652. And when he came to Jerusalem

  653. to meet the king,

  654. the king said to him,

  655. Why did you not go with me,

  656. Mephibosheth?

  657. He answered,

  658. My lord, O king,

  659. my servant deceived me.

  660. For your servant said to him,

  661. I will saddle a donkey

  662. for myself

  663. that I may ride on it

  664. and go with the king.

  665. For your servant is lame.

  666. He, that is Ziba,

  667. has slandered your servant

  668. to my lord the king.

  669. But my lord the king

  670. is like the angel of God.

  671. Do therefore

  672. what seems good to you.

  673. For all my father's house

  674. were but men

  675. doomed to death

  676. before my lord the king,

  677. but you set your servant

  678. among those

  679. who eat at your table.

  680. What further right

  681. have I then

  682. to cry to the king?

  683. And the king said to him,

  684. Why speak any more

  685. of your affairs?

  686. I have decided.

  687. You and Ziba

  688. shall divide the land.

  689. And Mephibosheth

  690. said to the king,

  691. Oh, let him take it all

  692. since my lord the king

  693. has come safely home.

  694. If you look up

  695. before this paragraph

  696. in verse 17,

  697. we're told

  698. that a man named Ziba

  699. also came rushing down

  700. to the Jordan

  701. and crossed over

  702. to meet David.

  703. And you'll remember

  704. that like Shimei,

  705. David was also met

  706. by this guy named Ziba

  707. as he was fleeing

  708. Jerusalem from Absalom.

  709. and Ziba

  710. in that moment

  711. seemed to be

  712. a friend

  713. to David then.

  714. He gave him food

  715. and drink

  716. when David was tired

  717. and thirsty

  718. and hungry

  719. on his flight.

  720. But

  721. in that moment,

  722. if you look back there,

  723. that chapter,

  724. Ziba also sort of says

  725. that his master,

  726. Mephibosheth,

  727. Ziba is the servant

  728. of Mephibosheth.

  729. Ziba says,

  730. Oh, Mephibosheth,

  731. David,

  732. he's gone over

  733. with Absalom.

  734. He's totally abandoned you

  735. and betrayed you.

  736. And in that moment,

  737. David says,

  738. okay, Ziba,

  739. all of his property

  740. is yours.

  741. For your loyalty,

  742. you get his inheritance.

  743. But now,

  744. lo and behold,

  745. as David is coming

  746. back into the land,

  747. we get to hear

  748. Mephibosheth's side

  749. of the story.

  750. And David,

  751. in some sense,

  752. can see Mephibosheth's

  753. side of the story

  754. right before his eyes

  755. because Mephibosheth,

  756. the narrator says,

  757. is a total wreck.

  758. His feet are dirty,

  759. his beard is scraggly,

  760. his clothes are dirty.

  761. In other words,

  762. he's been in mourning,

  763. sadness,

  764. and grief

  765. since David left the nation,

  766. since he had to flee.

  767. And because of Mephibosheth's

  768. disability,

  769. he was lame

  770. in both of his feet,

  771. he couldn't actually

  772. make it out to David

  773. in time to go with him.

  774. He was stranded.

  775. It seems that his servant,

  776. Ziba,

  777. had betrayed him,

  778. kind of left him,

  779. and gone out

  780. and taken advantage

  781. of David

  782. while David

  783. was on the run.

  784. So,

  785. the question is,

  786. who's telling the truth?

  787. Is it Ziba

  788. or is it Mephibosheth?

  789. At this point,

  790. I mean,

  791. David is sort of confronted

  792. with a giant

  793. he said,

  794. she said,

  795. right?

  796. Of course,

  797. on the surface,

  798. it looks like Ziba

  799. is guilty.

  800. Mephibosheth's story

  801. certainly seems more plausible

  802. and he kind of

  803. looks the part too.

  804. But David doesn't rush

  805. to any conclusions here.

  806. Isn't it interesting

  807. that if David showed

  808. restraint

  809. in the episode

  810. right before this

  811. with Shimei

  812. not putting him

  813. to death immediately,

  814. David also shows

  815. some restraint here

  816. by not immediately

  817. reinstating Mephibosheth

  818. and punishing Ziba.

  819. Instead,

  820. David does something

  821. again that's very prudent.

  822. What does he do?

  823. He divides the property

  824. 50-50.

  825. And it's almost

  826. like a test.

  827. Do you remember

  828. when Solomon,

  829. David's son,

  830. first became king?

  831. What's one of the first things

  832. that Solomon has to do

  833. when he's king?

  834. Two women come to Solomon

  835. and these two women

  836. both had children.

  837. One of them died

  838. and one of them was alive

  839. and they both come to Solomon

  840. and say,

  841. my child's the alive one

  842. and the other child

  843. is the dead one.

  844. Right?

  845. And they're arguing it out.

  846. And what's Solomon

  847. going to do?

  848. It's a he said,

  849. she said kind of thing.

  850. So he says,

  851. well,

  852. you say one thing,

  853. you say another,

  854. cut the baby in half,

  855. and you each get to take

  856. one part of it home.

  857. And one woman says,

  858. great,

  859. fine by me,

  860. sounds like a good deal.

  861. And the other woman says,

  862. no,

  863. let her have it.

  864. And right away,

  865. everybody knows

  866. who the real mother is.

  867. The one who wanted

  868. the child to live

  869. even if she would lose him.

  870. And I think in some sense

  871. when David says,

  872. look,

  873. let's just cut the property

  874. 50-50,

  875. we get to see immediately

  876. where Mephibosheth's heart

  877. is at.

  878. Because in essence,

  879. what does Mephibosheth say?

  880. He says,

  881. you know what,

  882. David?

  883. Let Ziba have the whole thing.

  884. Why?

  885. Because if I have you,

  886. if you've come home

  887. and you're going to reign,

  888. then I've got everything I need.

  889. I don't need property,

  890. livelihood.

  891. I don't need that.

  892. You're here.

  893. That's what matters.

  894. Now pause,

  895. let's just pause

  896. on that for a minute.

  897. Friends,

  898. do you want to know

  899. whether or not

  900. you really get

  901. the gospel?

  902. Do you want to know

  903. whether you really grasp

  904. the heart of what

  905. Christianity is all about?

  906. So often at the heart level,

  907. what we're really saying

  908. spiritually is this.

  909. I'll follow Jesus.

  910. I will believe in him

  911. as long as that helps me

  912. get what I really want.

  913. Or,

  914. at least,

  915. I'll follow him at least

  916. if it doesn't get in the way

  917. of what I really want.

  918. But you know

  919. that you're really

  920. starting to get it.

  921. You know that your heart

  922. is really starting to change.

  923. When you start to say,

  924. you know,

  925. actually,

  926. the most important thing

  927. in my life

  928. isn't whether or not

  929. I get this particular thing.

  930. But the most important thing

  931. is to have Jesus himself.

  932. That's what really matters.

  933. To have him

  934. reigning in my life,

  935. it doesn't matter

  936. if I get this,

  937. that,

  938. or the other thing.

  939. I've got him.

  940. In other words,

  941. when your heart starts to see

  942. not Christ

  943. as a means to an end,

  944. but himself

  945. as the end,

  946. that's when you're

  947. starting to get it.

  948. When you start to see

  949. that being in a relationship

  950. with him,

  951. that's the greatest thing.

  952. And isn't that what

  953. Mephibosheth is saying here?

  954. David,

  955. look,

  956. the land is not the thing.

  957. You're the thing.

  958. To sit at your table,

  959. to be a part of your family,

  960. that's what I care about.

  961. So you can give Ziba

  962. the property,

  963. I don't really care.

  964. What I care is

  965. to be reconciled to you.

  966. That's the heart

  967. that really gets it.

  968. Friends,

  969. is that you tonight?

  970. It's a hard question.

  971. Or is something

  972. more precious to you

  973. than having God himself

  974. in Christ?

  975. Are you seeing

  976. your relationship with God

  977. as just a means to an end?

  978. Are you seeing it

  979. for what it is,

  980. the very end

  981. for which you were created?

  982. To know him

  983. and to love him

  984. and to be in fellowship

  985. with him.

  986. Is that the most

  987. precious thing to you?

  988. Let's look at David's

  989. last encounter here.

  990. And here we see David

  991. not dealing with his enemies

  992. like Shimei or Ziba,

  993. but he's dealing

  994. with a friend here.

  995. Let's pick up

  996. in verse 31.

  997. Now Barzillai,

  998. the Gileadite.

  999. That's a sweet name

  1000. by the way.

  1001. Anyone here expecting?

  1002. Barzillai.

  1003. Put that one

  1004. on your short list.

  1005. That's a good deal.

  1006. Barzillai,

  1007. the Gileadite,

  1008. had come down

  1009. from Rogalim

  1010. and he went on

  1011. with the king

  1012. to the Jordan

  1013. to escort him

  1014. over the Jordan.

  1015. Barzillai was

  1016. a very aged man,

  1017. 80 years old.

  1018. He had provided

  1019. the king food

  1020. while he stayed

  1021. at Mahanaim

  1022. for he was

  1023. a very wealthy man.

  1024. And the king

  1025. said to Barzillai,

  1026. come over with me

  1027. and I will provide

  1028. for you with me

  1029. in Jerusalem.

  1030. But Barzillai said

  1031. to the king,

  1032. how many years

1033. have I still to live

1034. that I should go up

  1035. with the king

  1036. to Jerusalem?

  1037. I am this day

  1038. 80 years old.

  1039. Can I discern

  1040. what is pleasant

  1041. and what is not?

  1042. Can your servant

  1043. taste what he eats

  1044. or what he drinks?

  1045. Can I still listen

  1046. to the voice

  1047. of singing men

  1048. and singing women?

  1049. Why then should

  1050. your servant

  1051. be an added burden

1052. to my lord the king?

  1053. Your servant

1054. will go a little way

  1055. over the Jordan

  1056. with the king.

  1057. Why should the king

  1058. repay me

  1059. with such a reward?

  1060. Please let your servant

1061. return that I might die

  1062. in my own city

  1063. near the grave

  1064. of my father

  1065. and my mother.

1066. But here is your servant

  1067. Kimham.

  1068. Let him go over

1069. with my lord the king

  1070. and do for him

  1071. whatever seems good

  1072. to you.

  1073. And the king answered

  1074. Kimham shall go

  1075. over with me

  1076. and I will do

  1077. for him

  1078. whatever seems

  1079. good to you

  1080. and all that you

  1081. desire of me

1082. I will do for you.

  1083. Then all the people

  1084. went over the Jordan

  1085. and the king

  1086. went over

  1087. and the king

  1088. kissed Barzillai

  1089. and blessed him

  1090. and he returned

  1091. to his own home.

  1092. The king went

  1093. on to Gilgal

  1094. and Kimham

  1095. went with him.

  1096. So here we see

  1097. that David

  1098. doesn't forget

  1099. the kindness

  1100. that this man

  1101. Barzillai

  1102. showed to him

1103. when he was in need.

  1104. And when Barzillai

  1105. refuses to accept

  1106. David's offer

  1107. of coming back

  1108. with him to Jerusalem

  1109. David doesn't

  1110. get offended.

  1111. Instead he finds

  1112. a way to honor

  1113. his old friend

  1114. nonetheless

  1115. by blessing

  1116. this young man

  1117. Kimham

  1118. in his place.

  1119. I think there's

  1120. a critical

  1121. actually lesson

  1122. in this paragraph.

  1123. Think about David.

  1124. David is putting

  1125. out fires

  1126. left and right

  1127. isn't he?

  1128. He's got huge

  1129. massive problems

  1130. to deal with.

  1131. The nation

  1132. is on the verge

  1133. of crumbling

  1134. and yet

  1135. he doesn't forget

  1136. and he doesn't

  1137. take for granted

  1138. the friends

  1139. who actually

  1140. stood by him

1141. when he was in need.

  1142. I think this is

  1143. a really good reminder.

  1144. You know it's important

  1145. to think about

  1146. how we treat

  1147. our enemies

  1148. and we've been seeing

  1149. how David

  1150. is an example

  1151. of prudence

  1152. and mercy

  1153. in that regard

  1154. but friends

  1155. we also need

  1156. to think about

  1157. how we treat

  1158. our friends.

  1159. Think about

  1160. the people

  1161. who are close

  1162. to you

  1163. who stand

  1164. by you

  1165. the people

  1166. who encourage

  1167. you

  1168. and who support

  1169. you

  1170. and who are there

  1171. for you

  1172. when you need

  1173. them.

  1174. Are you taking

  1175. them for granted?

  1176. being a peacemaker

  1177. being an agent

  1178. of God's kingdom

  1179. is just as much

  1180. about loving

  1181. our spouses

  1182. and showing

  1183. kindness

  1184. to our fellow

  1185. church members

  1186. and being grateful

  1187. to our friends

  1188. it's as much

  1189. about that

  1190. not taking

  1191. those people

  1192. for granted

  1193. working hard

  1194. at cultivating

  1195. those relationships

  1196. is as much

  1197. about that

  1198. as it is

  1199. about forgiving

  1200. our enemies.

  1201. And notice

  1202. how David

  1203. here is not

  1204. easily

  1205. deterred

  1206. his plan

  1207. A

  1208. doesn't work

  1209. Barzillai

  1210. declines

  1211. the offer

  1212. to come

  1213. to Jerusalem

  1214. and then

  1215. what does

  1216. David do?

  1217. Well fine

  1218. see you later

  1219. no

  1220. he gladly

  1221. goes along

  1222. with plan B

  1223. right

  1224. he'll show

  1225. kindness

  1226. to the servant

  1227. instead

  1228. bring him

  1229. along

  1230. I'll shower

  1231. blessings on him

  1232. for your sake

  1233. in other words

  1234. David's going

  1235. to show

  1236. loyalty

  1237. and gratitude

  1238. to his friend

  1239. and he's going

  1240. to do it

  1241. in a way

  1242. that matters

  1243. and that counts

  1244. to him

  1245. to Barzillai

  1246. not to David

  1247. friends

  1248. when you think

  1249. about showing

  1250. kindness

  1251. to those

  1252. who are

  1253. closest to you

  1254. to really

  1255. blessing them

  1256. to really

  1257. showing them

  1258. gratitude

  1259. are you

  1260. thinking about

  1261. what would

  1262. be meaningful

  1263. for that

  1264. person

  1265. or are you

  1266. doing it

  1267. sort of

  1268. according to

  1269. your own

  1270. agenda

  1271. and what

  1272. you think

  1273. they should

  1274. like

  1275. are you

  1276. like

  1277. Homer Simpson

  1278. who buys

  1279. Marge Simpson

  1280. a bowling ball

  1281. for her

  1282. birthday

  1283. oh

  1284. you're not

  1285. going to

  1286. use the

  1287. bowling ball

  1288. Marge

  1289. I'll take

  1290. it

  1291. friends

  1292. we should

  1293. rather be

  1294. ultimately

  1295. concerned

  1296. about what's

  1297. going to

  1298. show that

  1299. person

  1300. loyalty

  1301. and kindness

  1302. and gratitude

  1303. and bless

  1304. them

  1305. Barzillai

  1306. comes up

  1307. with this

  1308. plan

  1309. here's my

  1310. servant

  1311. take

  1312. this servant

  1313. boy to

  1314. Jerusalem

  1315. and shower

  1316. blessing

  1317. on him

  1318. that would

  1319. not have

  1320. been a

  1321. sexy

  1322. flashy

  1323. proposal

  1324. to David

  1325. would have

  1326. been much

  1327. more great

  1328. to take

  1329. this aged

  1330. old guy

  1331. to Jerusalem

  1332. and have

  1333. him sit

  1334. at his

  1335. table

  1336. and look

  1337. at how

  1338. great

  1339. that is

  1340. but no

  1341. David

  1342. says great

  1343. Barz life

  1344. that's what's

  1345. going to

  1346. bless you

  1347. bring him

  1348. along

  1349. I'll make

  1350. him one

  1351. of my

  1352. own

  1353. David's

  1354. ultimately

  1355. concerned with

  1356. what's going

  1357. to show

  1358. him

  1359. that he's

  1360. grateful for

  1361. his loyalty

  1362. and love

  1363. and I think

  1364. that's worthy

  1365. of our

  1366. imitation

  1367. but you know

  1368. friends for all

  1369. that when we

  1370. come to the

  1371. end of this

  1372. chapter we

  1373. see something

  1374. again that's a

  1375. little surprising

  1376. David has

  1377. done his

  1378. best at

  1379. this point

  1380. to repair

  1381. and restore

  1382. the nation

  1383. he's showing

  1384. mercy to his

  1385. enemies

  1386. he's showing

  1387. kindness to

  1388. his friends

  1389. he's being

  1390. prudent and

  1391. wise and

  1392. thoughtful

  1393. he's being

  1394. a good

  1395. king

  1396. but in

  1397. the end

  1398. it doesn't

  1399. seem to

  1400. have been

  1401. enough

  1402. let's pick

  1403. up with

  1404. the rest

  1405. of verse

  1406. 40

  1407. all the

  1408. people of

  1409. Judah

  1410. and also

  1411. half the

  1412. people of

  1413. Israel

  1414. brought the

  1415. king on

  1416. his way

  1417. then all

  1418. the men

  1419. of Israel

  1420. presumably

  1421. all those

  1422. who didn't

  1423. show up

  1424. came to

  1425. the king

  1426. and said

  1427. to the

  1428. king

  1429. why have

  1430. our

  1431. brothers

  1432. the men

  1433. of

  1434. Judah

  1435. stolen

  1436. you away

  1437. and brought

  1438. the king

  1439. and his

  1440. household

  1441. over the

  1442. Jordan

  1443. and all

  1444. David's

  1445. men

  1446. with

  1447. him

  1448. they're

  1449. accusing

  1450. them

  1451. of

  1452. going

  1453. behind

  1454. their

  1455. back

  1456. and

  1457. bringing

  1458. David

  1459. home

  1460. and not

  1461. letting

  1462. them

  1463. join

  1464. the

  1465. party

  1466. and all

  1467. the men

  1468. of

  1469. Judah

  1470. answered

  1471. the men

  1472. of

  1473. Israel

  1474. because

  1475. the

  1476. king's

  1477. our

  1478. close

  1479. relative

  1480. why

  1481. then are

  1482. you angry

  1483. over

  1484. this

  1485. matter

  1486. have

  1487. we

  1488. eaten

  1489. at

  1490. all

  1491. at

  1492. the

  1493. king's

  1494. expense

  1495. or

  1496. has

  1497. he

  1498. given

  1499. us

  1500. any

  1501. gift

  1502. the

  1503. implied

  1504. answer

  1505. there

  1506. is

  1507. no

  1508. we

  1509. haven't

  1510. gotten

  1511. any

  1512. profit

  1513. out

  1514. of

  1515. this

  1516. deal

  1517. and

  1518. the

  1519. men

  1520. of

  1521. Israel

  1522. answered

  1523. the

  1524. men

  1525. of

  1526. Judah

  1527. we

  1528. have

  1529. ten

  1530. shares

  1531. in

  1532. the

  1533. king

  1534. and

  1535. in

  1536. David

  1537. also

  1538. we

  1539. have

  1540. more

  1541. than

  1542. you

  1543. why

  1544. then

  1545. do

  1546. you

  1547. despise

  1548. us

  1549. were

  1550. we

  1551. not

  1552. the

  1553. first

  1554. to

  1555. speak

  1556. of

  1557. bringing

  1558. back

  1559. our

  1560. king

  1561. it

  1562. was

  1563. our

  1564. idea

  1565. in

  1566. the

  1567. first

  1568. place

  1569. but

  1570. the

  1571. words

  1572. of

  1573. the

  1574. men

  1575. of

  1576. Judah

  1577. were

  1578. fiercer

  1579. than

  1580. the

  1581. words

  1582. of

  1583. the

  1584. men

  1585. of

  1586. Israel

  1587. end

  1588. of

  1589. chapter

  1590. despite

  1591. all

  1592. of

  1593. David's

  1594. robust

  1595. peacemaking

  1596. activity

  1597. the

  1598. nation

  1599. still

  1600. descends

  1601. into

  1602. pettiness

  1603. and

  1604. tribalism

  1605. and

  1606. pride

  1607. and

  1608. it

  1609. ends

  1610. like

  1611. a

  1612. shouting

  1613. match

  1614. between

  1615. two

  1616. kids

  1617. on

  1618. the

  1619. playground

  1620. except

  1621. with

  1622. much

  1623. more

  1624. dire

  1625. consequences

  1626. because

  1627. as

  1628. we'll

  1629. see

  1630. in

  1631. the

  1632. next

  1633. chapter

  1634. as

  1635. a

  1636. result

  1637. of

  1638. this

  1639. fracturing

  1640. a

  1641. whole

  1642. other

  1643. rebellion

  1644. breaks

  1645. out

  1646. and

  1647. the

  1648. nation

  1649. again

  1650. descends

  1651. into

  1652. war

  1653. with

  1654. itself

  1655. so

  1656. what

  1657. does

  1658. it

  1659. mean

  1660. friends

  1661. I

  1662. think

  1663. it

  1664. means

  1665. that

  1666. not

  1667. even

  1668. great

  1669. David

  1670. can

  1671. finally

  1672. heal

  1673. the

  1674. divisions

  1675. that

  1676. tear

  1677. us

  1678. apart

  1679. the

  1680. chapter

  1681. ends

  1682. crying

  1683. out

  1684. with

  1685. the

  1686. need

  1687. for

  1688. an

  1689. even

  1690. greater

  1691. David

  1692. for

  1693. an

  1694. even

  1695. better

  1696. king

  1697. and

  1698. friends

  1699. that's

  1700. what

  1701. the

  1702. Bible

  1703. is

  1704. all

  1705. about

  1706. it's

  1707. about

  1708. one

  1709. who's

  1710. come

  1711. to do

  1712. just

  1713. that

  1714. you

  1715. know

  1716. when

  1717. Jesus

  1718. Christ

  1719. came

  1720. to

  1721. earth

  1722. one

  1723. of the

  1724. things

  1725. he taught

  1726. his

  1727. disciples

  1728. was this

  1729. blessed

  1730. are the

  1731. peacemakers

  1732. for they

  1733. shall be

  1734. called

  1735. the sons

  1736. of God

  1737. and in

  1738. some sense

  1739. that's what

  1740. we've been

  1741. thinking about

  1742. tonight

  1743. how to be

  1744. peacemakers

  1745. but you

  1746. know

  1747. at the end

  1748. of the day

  1749. Jesus

  1750. didn't come

  1751. just to

  1752. teach us

  1753. what we're

  1754. supposed

  1755. to do

  1756. he came

  1757. to

  1758. he came

  1759. to

  1760. do

  1761. what we

  1762. couldn't

  1763. do

  1764. he came

  1765. to

  1766. extend

  1767. a

  1768. mercy

  1769. and to

  1770. extend

  1771. a

  1772. kindness

  1773. to such

  1774. a degree

  1775. and to

  1776. such a

  1777. depth

  1778. that even

  1779. the most

  1780. violent

  1781. of our

  1782. divisions

  1783. can be

  1784. healed

  1785. in other

  1786. words

  1787. Jesus

  1788. Christ

  1789. came

  1790. not just

  1791. to teach

  1792. peace

  1793. but to

  1794. make

  1795. it

  1796. definitively

  1797. once and for

  1798. all

  1799. how

  1800. because you

  1801. see friends

  1802. for all

  1803. of those

  1804. men

  1805. and women

  1806. for everyone

  1807. who puts

  1808. their trust

  1809. in Christ

  1810. his death

  1811. on the cross

  1812. heals

  1813. the most

  1814. severe

  1815. division

  1816. that any

  1817. of us

  1818. ever

  1819. experience

  1820. the division

  1821. that exists

  1822. between us

  1823. as sinful

  1824. human beings

  1825. and our

  1826. holy

  1827. wise

  1828. and good

  1829. creator

  1830. God

  1831. and as

  1832. the son

  1833. of God

  1834. Jesus

  1835. came as

  1836. our

  1837. perfect

  1838. representative

  1839. fully

  1840. in the

  1841. flesh

  1842. living

  1843. a life

  1844. that we

  1845. should

  1846. have

  1847. lived

  1848. dying

  1849. a death

  1850. that we

  1851. deserve

  1852. to die

  1853. dying

  1854. in our

  1855. place

  1856. and then

  1857. rising

  1858. again

  1859. to prove

  1860. that the

  1861. penalty

  1862. for our

  1863. sins

  1864. have been

  1865. paid

  1866. in full

  1867. when we

  1868. trust

  1869. in him

  1870. and friends

  1871. the reality

  1872. is

  1873. is that

  1874. when we

  1875. come to

  1876. know

  1877. the

  1878. peace

  1879. of being

  1880. reconciled

  1881. to God

  1882. through

  1883. grace

  1884. something

  1885. that David

  1886. could never

  1887. do

  1888. no human

  1889. king

  1890. could reconcile

  1891. us to

  1892. God

  1893. but Jesus

  1894. can and

  1895. did

  1896. once we

  1897. come to

  1898. know

  1899. that

  1900. reconciling

  1901. grace

  1902. the apostle

  1903. Paul says

  1904. is that

  1905. then

  1906. we're

  1907. actually

  1908. reconciled

  1909. to one

  1910. another

  1911. that when

  1912. the wall

  1913. between

  1914. us and

  1915. God

  1916. came crashing

  1917. down

  1918. the wall

  1919. between

  1920. one

  1921. another

  1922. came

  1923. tumbling

  1924. down

  1925. with

  1926. it

  1927. David

  1928. did his

  1929. very best

  1930. to unite

  1931. the people

  1932. around his

  1933. kingship

  1934. but it's

  1935. still broke

  1936. and it's

  1937. still splintered

  1938. but when

  1939. Jesus Christ

  1940. was exalted

  1941. on the cross

  1942. our enmity

  1943. was finally

  1944. taken away

  1945. because before

  1946. the cross

  1947. we're all

  1948. equal

  1949. no matter

  1950. what our

  1951. tribe

  1952. no matter

  1953. what our

  1954. background

  1955. we're all

  1956. sinners

  1957. and we're

  1958. all recipients

  1959. of a steadfast

  1960. love and

  1961. grace like

  1962. we could

  1963. only imagine

  1964. and that

  1965. puts everything

  1966. else in

  1967. perspective

  1968. and friends

  1969. as we

  1970. the church

  1971. come to

  1972. grips with

  1973. that and

  1974. grasp that

  1975. and hold

  1976. tightly to it

  1977. in the power

  1978. of the Holy

  1979. Spirit

  1980. you know

  1981. what happens

  1982. the church

  1983. actually becomes

  1984. this great

  1985. signpost

  1986. of the

  1987. reconciling

  1988. power of

  1989. the cross

  1990. of Jesus

  1991. his own

  1992. reconciling

  1993. power

  1994. that today

  1995. as we

  1996. extend mercy

  1997. to our

  1998. enemies

  1999. as we

  2000. show kindness

  2001. to one

  2002. another

  2003. and to

  2004. our

  2005. friends

  2006. we're

  2007. actually

  2008. telling

  2009. the world

  2010. in our

  2011. life

  2012. together

  2013. that there's

  2014. finally a

  2015. king that

  2016. has come

  2017. who can

  2018. take away

  2019. our chaos

  2020. and give

  2021. us peace

  2022. who can

  2023. heal us

  2024. and make

  2025. us one

  2026. and take

  2027. away

  2028. these

  2029. divisions

  2030. that just

  2031. rip us

  2032. apart

  2033. and when

  2034. we're

  2035. living in

  2036. that

  2037. Jesus

  2038. says

  2039. blessed

  2040. are

  2041. the

  2042. peacemakers

  2043. for they

  2044. shall be

  2045. called sons

  2046. and daughters

  2047. of God

  2048. you see

  2049. may that

  2050. be true

  2051. of us

  2052. let's

  2053. pray

  2054. Lord

  2055. Jesus

  2056. we thank

  2057. you that

  2058. you are

  2059. the true

  2060. and better

  2061. David

  2062. who has

  2063. come

  2064. to unite

  2065. your people

  2066. into one

  2067. to forgive

  2068. all their

  2069. sins

  2070. and to

  2071. give us

  2072. a reconciling

  2073. mission

  2074. in the

  2075. world

  2076. and Lord

  2077. thank you

  2078. that you've

  2079. given us

  2080. your spirit

  2081. to dwell

  2082. permanently

  2083. in our

  2084. midst

  2085. and in

  2086. each one

  2087. of us

  2088. that we

  2089. might have

  2090. strength

  2091. energy

  2092. power

  2093. and guidance

  2094. to do

  2095. this

  2096. in the

  2097. world

  2098. today

  2099. so Lord

  2100. we thank

  2101. you for

  2102. your grace

  2103. we thank

  2104. you that

  2105. you've

  2106. healed

  2107. the great

  2108. divisions

  2109. between us

  2110. and God

  2111. and between

  2112. us

  2113. and each

  2114. other

  2115. we pray

  2116. Lord

  2117. that more

  2118. and more

  2119. we would

  2120. come to

  2121. love

  2122. and cherish

  2123. the reconciling

  2124. work that

  2125. you've done

  2126. for us

  2127. we pray

  2128. this in

  2129. your name

  2130. Lord

  2131. amen

  2132. friends

  2133. the music

  2134. team's

  2135. going to

  2136. come up

  2137. we're

  2138. going to

  2139. sing

  2140. one more

  2141. song

  2142. together

  2143. and just

  2144. meditate

  2145. on these

  2146. truths

  2147. a little

  2148. more

  2149. together

  2150. so let's

  2151. stand

  2152. and let's

  2153. sing

  2154. and let's

  2155. pray

  2156. together

  2157. thank you
