  1. 1 Corinthians 6, verses 12 through 20.

    1 Corinthians 6:12–20

  2. That's page 955 on the Pew Bible.

  3. Let me encourage you to turn there

  4. if you didn't bring a Bible this morning.

  5. 1 Corinthians 6, verses 12 through 20.

    1 Corinthians 6:12–20

  6. Let me read this text for us.

  7. All things are lawful for me.

  8. But not all things are helpful.

  9. All things are lawful for me.

  10. But I will not be dominated by anything.

  11. Food is meant for the stomach, and the stomach for food,

  12. and God will destroy both one and the other.

  13. The body is not meant for sexual immorality,

  14. but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

  15. And God raised the Lord,

  16. and will also raise us up by his power.

  17. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?

  18. Shall I then take the members of Christ

  19. and make them members of a prostitute?

  20. Never.

  21. Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute

  22. becomes one body with her?

  23. For as it is written, the two will become one flesh.

  24. But he who is joined to the Lord

  25. becomes one spirit with him.

  26. Flee from sexual immorality.

  27. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body.

  28. But the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

  29. Or do you not know that your body is a temple

  30. of the Holy Spirit within you,

  31. whom you have from God?

  32. You are not your own,

  33. for you were bought with a price.

  34. So glorify God in your body.

  35. Let's pray together.

  36. Our Father, how right it is to give you praise.

  37. Lord, all creation praises you.

  38. From the heavenly host down to the most microscopic

  39. plankton in the bottom of the sea.

  40. Lord, all is resounding with your praise.

  41. So as we come before your word this morning, Lord,

  42. we pray that you would free our minds from distraction

  43. and give us clarity by your spirit

  44. to listen to what this passage is saying,

  45. that we might join in the glorifying work

  46. of creation as your image bearers

  47. and as those who have been loved and redeemed by Christ.

  48. We ask this in his name.

  49. Amen.

  50. Let's talk about sex, baby.

  51. Let's talk about you and me.

  52. Let's talk about all the good things

  53. and the bad things that can be.

  54. Let's talk about sex.

  55. So sang Salt-N-Pepa right here on the New Haven Green

  56. just a couple summers ago.

  57. 15,000 people.

  58. Let's talk about sex.

  59. But in the church, it seems like sex has been something

  60. we haven't been so apt to talk about.

  61. If you've been watching the farewell season of Downton Abbey,

  62. think of the scene a couple weeks ago

  63. between the butler, Mr. Carson,

  64. and the cook, Mrs. Patmore.

  65. Mr. Carson is about to marry one Mrs. Hughes,

  66. and the anxious Mrs. Hughes has sent her good friend,

  67. Mrs. Patmore, to Mr. Carson to ask on her behalf

  68. if Mr. Carson wants a full marriage

  69. with all that that entails.

  70. And when Mrs. Patmore meets with Mr. Carson

  71. and finally beats around the bush long enough

  72. for him to catch her drift

  73. of what she actually wants to talk about,

  74. they both awkwardly turn away from each other

  75. in their chairs,

  76. speak about the subject in indirect references,

  77. and raise their eyes to the ceiling,

  78. wonderfully embarrassed.

  79. It's a well-played scene.

  80. But despite what many people think,

  81. when the Bible speaks about sex,

  82. and 1 Corinthians 6 is just one of many places,

  83. there is neither the glib casualness of pop music

  84. nor the stiff awkwardness of post-Victorian moralism.

  85. You see, in the Christian view of things,

  86. sex is neither a mere appetite to fulfill,

  87. so long as there are mutually consenting parties,

  88. nor is sex a taboo subject

  89. that should fill us with embarrassment.

  90. Rather, as we'll see in this passage,

  91. the Christian view of sex rooted in the Bible

  92. is full of glory.

  93. A divine gift of a good creator

  94. meant to show forth his kingdom

  95. to be used in the way he intends.

  96. And so, Paul will stay quite bluntly in verse 18.

  97. Flee sexual immorality.

  98. God's vision and purpose for sex

  99. are so good and glorious

  100. that you should run away

  101. if you find yourself tempted to pursue anything

  102. that falls short of it.

  103. Like Joseph in Genesis,

  104. sprinting away from the advances of Potiphar's wife,

  105. flee sexual immorality.

  106. But, of course, ours isn't the first period

  107. in human history

  108. that's experienced more than a bit of confusion

  109. surrounding sex.

  110. When you read a text like 1 Corinthians 6,

  111. I don't know about you,

  112. but it can be strangely comforting

  113. to realize

  114. that we're not the only ones

  115. who've been a bit muddled

  116. when it comes to understanding

  117. what sex is really for.

  118. In many ways,

  119. we still haven't caught up

  120. with the first century

  121. when it comes to muddledness.

  122. And so, there's no reason

  123. for the church today to freak out.

  124. The gospel was the power of God

  125. for salvation then,

  126. and it is still so today.

  127. But for all that,

  128. it does seem that the church in Corinth

  129. was seriously failing

  130. to grasp how the gospel

  131. ought to shape our view of sex.

  132. Verses 15 and 16 imply

  133. that there were Christians in Corinth

  134. who thought it was perfectly acceptable

  135. to visit the local temple prostitutes

  136. and not in order to introduce them to Jesus,

  137. mind you.

  138. But notice this.

  139. They were failing to grasp

  140. how the gospel shapes

  141. our view of sex

  142. because at a deeper level,

  143. they were failing to grasp

  144. what the gospel means

  145. for our bodies.

  146. Eight times in nine verses,

  147. Paul mentions the body.

  148. The whole passage will end,

  149. glorify God in your body.

  150. It's that positive vision

  151. of God's glory

  152. resounding through our bodily life

  153. that Paul leaves ringing in our ears.

  154. Yes,

  155. flee sexual immorality

  156. and do so

  157. because you've been called

  158. to something greater.

  159. Glorify God

  160. in your body.

  161. So what does the gospel

  162. have to say about our bodies

  163. that will help us

  164. think clearly

  165. about God glorifying

  166. sexual expression

  167. and empower us

  168. to live that way?

  169. I think we see four things

  170. in our text here before us.

  171. A four-point sermon this morning,

  172. not a three-point sermon.

  173. Changing things up.

  174. Four points in honor

  175. of the four quarters

  176. of the Super Bowl.

  177. Here we go.

  178. First,

  179. glorify God

  180. in your body

  181. because your body

  182. has a God-given purpose.

  183. We see this in verses 12 through 14.

  184. Explicitly at the end of verse 13.

  185. The body is not meant

  186. for sexual immorality

  187. but for the Lord.

  188. The body has a meaning.

  189. Now the passage begins

  190. with Paul quoting

  191. some slogans

  192. that some of the Corinthians

  193. would have bandied about.

  194. The first slogan

  195. sort of marked off

  196. in quotation marks there

  197. was,

  198. all things are lawful for me.

  199. In other words,

  200. you can hear the Corinthians

  201. thinking,

  202. we're not under the law anymore,

  203. we're under grace.

  204. So that means we have the right

  205. to do all things,

  206. right?

  207. But Paul immediately

  208. begins to sort of

  209. pick apart

  210. and deconstruct

  211. their slogan-based

  212. moral thinking.

  213. All things are lawful

  214. for me,

  215. you say,

  216. but not all things

  217. are helpful,

  218. are they?

  219. And certainly

  220. not all things

  221. are liberating.

  222. Some things

  223. will make you

  224. their slave.

  225. They will dominate you.

  226. The next slogan

  227. goes something like this,

  228. food is meant

  229. for the stomach

  230. and the stomach

  231. for food.

  232. Now in the Greek

  233. manuscripts

  234. of the New Testament,

  235. there wasn't

  236. any punctuation.

  237. So we have to

  238. actually decide

  239. based on the context

  240. and the language itself

  241. where these slogans

  242. kind of begin

  243. and end

  244. in the text.

  245. And many commentators

  246. think that the next line,

  247. and God will destroy

  248. both one and the other,

  249. actually ought to be

  250. included in the

  251. quotation marks too.

  252. And I actually think

  253. they're right.

  254. And so the Corinthian

  255. slogan really runs

  256. something like this,

  257. food is for the stomach

  258. and the stomach

  259. for food,

  260. and in the end

  261. it doesn't really matter

  262. because God's going

  263. to do away

  264. with all this

  265. bodily material stuff

  266. anyway.

  267. So you see then

  268. the underlying idea

  269. that they had.

  270. What we do

  271. with our bodies

  272. doesn't really matter.

  273. If you're hungry,

  274. you should eat.

  275. If you're lustful,

  276. you should have sex.

  277. It's just a bodily appetite.

  278. It doesn't really matter.

  279. After all,

  280. what God really cares about

  281. are our souls

  282. and all this bodily stuff

  283. is going to go away

  284. someday

  285. anyhow.

  286. And in many ways

  287. we can think similarly

  288. today,

  289. can't we?

  290. It's just sex.

  291. What's the big deal?

  292. Does God really care

  293. what I do

  294. with my body?

  295. I mean,

  296. we love each other.

  297. And here's where

  298. the gospel comes in.

  299. In light of what God

  300. has done in Christ,

  301. friend,

  302. your body

  303. is not

  304. meaningless.

  305. It's not just

  306. a collection

  307. of atoms

  308. and energy

  309. with no purpose

  310. and no future.

  311. Your body

  312. has a meaning.

  313. It's actually

  314. meant for something.

  315. And not just

  316. something,

  317. but more specifically

  318. someone.

  319. Just who exactly?

  320. The Lord.

  321. The body

  322. is not meant

  323. for sexual immorality,

  324. but for the Lord.

  325. That is

  326. the Lord Jesus.

  327. And then Paul

  328. goes one step further.

  329. And the Lord

  330. for the body.

  331. In other words,

  332. your body

  333. was created

  334. for the Lord

  335. to serve him,

  336. worship him,

  337. love him.

  338. And the Lord

  339. came for you,

  340. body and all.

  341. Think about

  342. the central message

  343. of the Bible.

  344. In the beginning,

  345. God created humanity,

  346. right?

  347. Bodily.

  348. And then

  349. after the fall

  350. had introduced

  351. death and decay

  352. and disordered desire

  353. into the world,

  354. when the fullness

  355. of time had come,

  356. Jesus in the incarnation

  357. took on a human

  358. body

  359. to show

  360. that God's

  361. redeeming purposes

  362. included our whole selves,

  363. bodies included.

  364. And in verse 14,

  365. Paul goes on

  366. and points

  367. to the resurrection.

  368. Just as God

  369. raised the Lord Jesus

  370. in the body,

  371. he will raise us

  372. to body and all.

  373. And so despite

  374. the Corinthian

  375. slogan,

  376. God

  377. won't

  378. simply destroy

  379. one and the other.

  380. He will raise

  381. them up.

  382. So it seems

  383. your body,

  384. Christian,

  385. has a glorious

  386. future.

  387. From creation

  388. to redemption

  389. to resurrection,

  390. our good God

  391. has a purpose

  392. for our bodies.

  393. One writer

  394. tells the story

  395. of a student

  396. friend of his

  397. who never bothered

  398. to buy a screwdriver.

  399. Instead,

  400. he just kept

  401. a couple of

  402. knives around,

  403. a big one

  404. and a small one.

  405. The big knife

  406. for the big screws,

  407. the small knife

  408. for the small screws,

  409. and they could

  410. pretty much

  411. get the job done

  412. when needed.

  413. Sounds like

  414. a classic

  415. graduate student.

  416. Except over time,

  417. the knives

  418. became bent

  419. and dull,

  420. losing their

  421. usefulness

  422. as knives.

  423. And one day

  424. when turning

  425. a particularly

  426. stubborn screw,

  427. the knife blade

  428. snapped

  429. in three pieces,

  430. cutting his

  431. friend's hand

  432. quite badly

  433. in the process.

  434. Knives are made

  435. with a purpose.

  436. There's a right way

  437. to use them.

  438. In this text,

  439. Paul's trying

  440. to get us

  441. to see

  442. what it means

  443. to use the human

  444. body in the right way

  445. for the right purpose.

  446. And that is a purpose

  447. that comes from God,

  448. the God who made us,

  449. who took on flesh

  450. to redeem us

  451. and will one day

  452. raise us in glory.

  453. And when we face

  454. temptation,

  455. and when we need

  456. to flee

  457. sexual immorality,

  458. whether it's

  459. the temptation

  460. to view pornography

  461. on the internet,

  462. whether it's

  463. the temptation

  464. to sleep

  465. with your boyfriend

  466. or girlfriend,

  467. whether it's

  468. the temptation

  469. to have an affair

  470. outside of your marriage,

  471. whatever it is,

  472. in the moment

  473. of temptation,

  474. it will do you,

  475. friends,

  476. much good

  477. to speak this

  478. very truth

  479. to your hearts.

  480. It's not

  481. what I'm

  482. meant for.

  483. These things

  484. are not

  485. what I'm

  486. meant for.

  487. I am the Lord's,

  488. the Lord is mine,

  489. and I have a purpose

  490. and a future

  491. that makes the

  492. fleeting pleasure

  493. of this temptation

  494. look no more

  495. desirable in comparison

  496. than lima beans

  497. to a third grader.

  498. I hated lima beans

  499. as a kid.

  500. I actually tried

  501. feeding them

  502. to my dog

  503. under the table.

  504. I got in really

  505. big trouble

  506. for that.

  507. But seriously,

  508. though,

  509. isn't it true

  510. that sometimes

  511. we give in

  512. to sexual sin

  513. just because

  514. we think

  515. we don't

  516. deserve better?

  517. We think

  518. we're failures,

  519. we think

  520. we're valueless,

  521. purposeless,

  522. meaningless,

  523. and so we just

  524. give in.

  525. Friends,

  526. it's not

  527. what you're

  528. meant for.

  529. You are the

  530. Lord's,

  531. and if you

  532. are His,

  533. one day

  534. in the resurrection,

  535. you will

  536. radiate with

  537. a beauty

  538. that if we

  539. could see it

  540. now in this

  541. life,

  542. we would be

  543. tempted to

  544. fall down

  545. and to

  546. worship you

  547. as a God.

  548. The psalm

  549. we read earlier,

  550. Psalm 16,

  551. was all about

  552. God not

  553. abandoning our

  554. souls and even

  555. our bodies

  556. to the grave,

  557. but rescuing

  558. them for glory,

  559. to be in

  560. communion with

  561. Him where

  562. there is

  563. pleasure

  564. forevermore.

  565. That's what

  566. you're meant

  567. for.

  568. So glorify

  569. God in

  570. your body

  571. because your

  572. body is full

  573. of God-given

  574. purpose.

  575. It's meant

  576. for the

  577. Lord.

  578. And that

  579. leads right

  580. into our

  581. next point.

  582. If our

  583. bodies are

  584. for the

  585. Lord and

  586. the Lord

  587. for our

  588. bodies,

  589. then that

  590. means that

  591. we won't

  592. just share

  593. a future

  594. union with

  595. Him,

  596. but that

  597. even now

  598. we have

  599. a present

  600. union with

  601. Him as

  602. well.

  603. And so the

  604. second point,

  605. verses 15

  606. through 17,

  607. glorify God

  608. in your

  609. body because

  610. your body

  611. is a

  612. member of

  613. Christ.

  614. Paul begins

  615. with a rhetorical

  616. question,

  617. do you not

  618. know?

  619. This is

  620. something they

  621. should know.

  622. Do you not

  623. know that

  624. your bodies

  625. are members

  626. of Christ?

  627. Now when we

  628. hear the word

  629. member today,

  630. we think of

  631. voluntary

  632. association in

  633. a social group

  634. or a political

  635. party or a

  636. mailing list,

  637. what have

  638. you?

  639. But when

  640. Paul uses

  641. the word,

  642. the image

  643. is much

  644. more intimate

  645. and much

  646. more graphic

  647. than that.

  648. It literally

  649. means a

  650. body part.

  651. You are

  652. the limbs

  653. and organs

  654. of Christ

  655. is how one

  656. commentator

  657. tries to

  658. capture the

  659. phrase.

  660. Paul will

  661. use this

  662. metaphor again

  663. in chapter

  664. 12 to talk

  665. about unity

  666. and honor

  667. in the

  668. church family.

  669. But here,

  670. Paul is making

  671. a point about

  672. sex.

  673. Now,

  674. in the

  675. Corinthian

  676. context,

  677. the particular

  678. issue was

  679. sex with

  680. temple

  681. prostitutes,

  682. as we

  683. mentioned

  684. earlier.

  685. And of

  686. course,

  687. there are

  688. all sorts

  689. of things

  690. that are

  691. wrong with

  692. prostitution.

  693. Paul gets

  694. that,

  695. we get

  696. that.

  697. But,

  698. the point

  699. that Paul

  700. wants to

  701. highlight here

  702. is specifically

  703. related to

  704. the meaning

  705. of sex

  706. itself.

  707. And that

  708. meaning is

  709. found in

  710. the one

  711. little phrase

  712. in our

  713. passage,

  714. one

  715. flesh.

  716. You see,

  717. friends,

  718. the biblical

  719. view of

  720. sex is

  721. that it

  722. exists for

  723. more than

  724. mere pleasure

  725. on the

  726. one hand,

  727. and for

  728. more than

  729. mere

  730. procreation

  731. on the

  732. other.

  733. Ultimately,

  734. sex is

  735. an expression

  736. and declaration

  737. and embodiment

  738. of a whole

  739. life union

  740. with another

  741. person.

  742. sex is

  743. a way

  744. of saying

  745. to another

  746. person,

  747. I'm committing

  748. my whole

  749. life to

  750. you,

  751. not just

  752. physically,

  753. but in

  754. every way,

  755. socially and

  756. spiritually,

  757. emotionally and

  758. financially and

  759. so on.

  760. As Paul quotes

  761. Genesis to

  762. say,

  763. the two will

  764. become one

  765. flesh.

  766. flesh.

  767. But there's

  768. another step

  769. in the line

  770. of Paul's

  771. thinking that

  772. we have to

  773. see.

  774. This one

  775. flesh,

  776. whole life

  777. union that

  778. sex is

  779. meant to

  780. signify and

  781. communicate

  782. is itself

  783. meant to

  784. be a

  785. reflection,

  786. a picture

  787. of something.

  788. Of what?

  789. of the

  790. deep,

  791. intimate

  792. union

  793. that Christ

  794. has with

  795. believers.

  796. Verse 17,

  797. he who is

  798. joined to

  799. the Lord

  800. becomes one

  801. spirit with

  802. him.

  803. That is

  804. inseparably,

  805. personally

  806. united.

  807. United in

  808. such a way

  809. that the

  810. union between

  811. a husband and

  812. a wife can

  813. only be a

  814. reflection.

  815. Paul will

  816. say as much

  817. again in

  818. Ephesians 5.

  819. Again,

  820. in speaking of

  821. marriage and

  822. sex,

  823. he'll quote

  824. Genesis 2,

  825. 24.

  826. A man shall

  827. leave his

  828. father and

  829. mother and

  830. hold fast to

  831. his wife and

  832. the two shall

  833. become one

  834. flesh.

  835. And then

  836. Paul says,

  837. this mystery

  838. is profound

  839. and I'm

  840. saying that it

  841. refers to

  842. Christ and

  843. the church.

  844. In other

  845. words,

  846. marriage and

  847. sex are

  848. meant to

  849. point beyond

  850. themselves to

  851. a much greater

  852. reality.

  853. to the

  854. unbreakable

  855. union between

  856. Christ and

  857. the church.

  858. So you

  859. see,

  860. this is why

  861. the biblical

  862. sex ethic

  863. is what it

  864. is.

  865. In

  866. redemption,

  867. God unites

  868. himself with

  869. that which is

  870. radically different

  871. than himself.

  872. Us,

  873. fallen and

  874. finite human

  875. beings.

  876. And that

  877. union is

  878. forged wholly,

  879. intimately,

  880. and permanently.

  881. And so in

  882. the Bible,

  883. human marriage

  884. is a display

  885. and picture

  886. of that

  887. redeeming love

  888. of God.

  889. Marriage is

  890. the union

  891. between two

  892. people who

  893. are different,

  894. male and

  895. female,

  896. and who

  897. give themselves

  898. to one

  899. another wholly,

  900. intimately,

  901. and permanently,

  902. as long as

  903. they both

  904. shall live,

  905. the old

  906. vows say.

  907. So why is

  908. sex with a

  909. prostitute so

  910. unthinkable in

  911. light of the

  912. gospel?

  913. Why is any

  914. sex outside of

  915. marriage so

  916. out of place

  917. in light of

  918. the gospel?

  919. Because only in

  920. marriage does

  921. sex say

  922. what it's

  923. supposed to

  924. say.

  925. That there is a

  926. God who loves

  927. us,

  928. and has given

  929. himself wholly

  930. for us,

  931. and will

  932. never,

  933. ever forsake

  934. us.

  935. If you want

  936. to dive deeper

  937. into the

  938. biblical vision

  939. for sex and

  940. sexuality and

  941. gender,

  942. friends,

  943. let me encourage

  944. you to come

  945. to this Sunday

  946. school class

  947. happening at

  948. nine o'clock

  949. on Sundays.

  950. Greg and

  951. others will be

  952. unpacking this

  953. over the next

  954. few months.

  955. But if what

  956. Paul is saying

  957. about sex here

  958. is true,

  959. that it's

  960. ultimately a

  961. sign,

  962. a display of

  963. the much

  964. greater union

  965. believers have

  966. with Christ,

  967. if that's

  968. true,

  969. then it means

  970. something very

  971. practical for

  972. those of us

  973. who are

  974. single.

  975. Our culture

  976. tells us that

  977. it's impossible

  978. to be a

  979. fulfilled,

  980. flourishing human

  981. person apart

  982. from active

  983. sexual expression.

  984. In other

  985. words,

  986. if I'm not

  987. having sex,

  988. I'm fundamentally

  989. missing out.

  990. Missing out not

  991. just on having

  992. a good time,

  993. but on being a

  994. whole human

  995. person,

  996. right?

  997. But in light

  998. of the gospel,

  999. you see the

  1000. single person

  1001. who is in

  1002. Christ,

  1003. the single

  1004. person who is

  1005. in Christ

  1006. already enjoys

  1007. what sex is

  1008. ultimately about.

  1009. God's

  1010. love.

  1011. It's like a

  1012. tourist standing

  1013. atop the great

  1014. wall of China

  1015. with the green

  1016. hills rolling

  1017. off in every

  1018. direction,

  1019. but staring

  1020. nose down,

  1021. face buried

  1022. in his or her

  1023. Rick Steve's

  1024. guidebook,

  1025. looking at a

  1026. picture of the

  1027. thing.

  1028. when it stands

  1029. right there

  1030. beneath their

  1031. feet,

  1032. if they just

  1033. lift their

  1034. gaze and

  1035. take it in.

  1036. Sex is a

  1037. glorious picture,

  1038. yes,

  1039. but it is still

  1040. a picture,

  1041. and you don't

  1042. need the picture

  1043. to enjoy the

  1044. thing itself.

  1045. Will you miss

  1046. out if you're

  1047. not having

  1048. sex?

  1049. No.

  1050. You don't

  1051. need sex to

  1052. be a whole

  1053. human person,

  1054. which is to

  1055. say sex is

  1056. not God

  1057. and never

  1058. can be.

  1059. And do you

  1060. want to know

  1061. what will help

  1062. you flee

  1063. sexual immorality?

  1064. Grow in

  1065. your intimacy

  1066. with the

  1067. thing itself,

  1068. with Christ

  1069. himself.

  1070. Why did he

  1071. give us the

  1072. scriptures?

  1073. So that we

  1074. could hear his

  1075. words again

  1076. and again,

  1077. and like

  1078. lovers we

  1079. could relish

  1080. every word

  1081. and know his

  1082. voice and

  1083. know his

  1084. presence.

  1085. Why did

  1086. Jesus give us

  1087. the Lord's

  1088. Supper?

  1089. So that we

  1090. could touch

  1091. and taste

  1092. and hold

  1093. something bodily

  1094. that would

  1095. speak powerfully

  1096. to our hearts

  1097. of what he's

  1098. done for us.

  1099. In the Old

  1100. Testament,

  1101. sharing a

  1102. meal was a

  1103. way to do

  1104. covenant renewal,

  1105. to renew the

  1106. promises and

  1107. intimacy of a

  1108. relationship.

  1109. And here at

  1110. this meal,

  1111. the Lord,

  1112. as it were,

  1113. renews his

  1114. covenant with

  1115. all who've

  1116. placed their

  1117. trust in him,

  1118. who've been

  1119. joined to him,

  1120. as verse 17

  1121. says,

  1122. through faith.

  1123. So here then,

  1124. friends,

  1125. is our second

  1126. point.

  1127. Glorify God in

  1128. your body,

  1129. because your

  1130. body is a

  1131. member of

  1132. Christ.

  1133. And the

  1134. third part

  1135. follows right

  1136. from it.

  1137. again,

  1138. our intimate

  1139. union with

  1140. Christ means

  1141. that we're

  1142. not just

  1143. inseparably

  1144. connected to

  1145. him,

  1146. but in a

  1147. mysterious way,

  1148. it means that

  1149. by the Holy

  1150. Spirit,

  1151. God dwells

  1152. in us.

  1153. In verses

  1154. 18 and 19,

  1155. then we have

  1156. the third

  1157. point.

  1158. Glorify God

  1159. in your body,

  1160. because your

  1161. body is a

  1162. temple of the

  1163. Holy Spirit.

  1164. Now,

  1165. everyone agrees,

  1166. if you look

  1167. down,

  1168. that verse

  1169. 18 is a

  1170. tricky verse.

  1171. On the

  1172. surface,

  1173. Paul seems to

  1174. be saying

  1175. that sexual

  1176. sins are

  1177. somehow worse

  1178. than other

  1179. sins.

  1180. But you know,

  1181. the rest of

  1182. the New

  1183. Testament proves

  1184. that that

  1185. can't be what

  1186. Paul is saying

  1187. here.

  1188. Just last

  1189. week,

  1190. we saw that

  1191. sexual

  1192. immorality

  1193. and greed

  1194. and reviling

  1195. and so on

  1196. are all

  1197. equally out

  1198. of place

  1199. in God's

  1200. kingdom.

  1201. So what

  1202. is Paul

  1203. saying?

  1204. Well,

  1205. if you look

  1206. at the

  1207. footnote

  1208. in the

  1209. ESV

  1210. there,

  1211. we could

  1212. legitimately

  1213. read the

  1214. first part

  1215. of the

  1216. verse to

  1217. simply be

  1218. saying,

  1219. every sin

  1220. a person

  1221. commits is

  1222. outside the

  1223. body.

  1224. And that

  1225. sounds a

  1226. lot like

  1227. some of

  1228. the

  1229. Corinthian

  1230. slogans

  1231. that Paul

  1232. was dismantling

  1233. earlier in

  1234. the passage.

  1235. In other

  1236. words,

  1237. what we do

  1238. in our

  1239. bodies

  1240. isn't

  1241. really that

  1242. spiritually

  1243. significant.

  1244. And many

  1245. commentators

  1246. have thought

  1247. just that,

  1248. that Paul

  1249. is quoting

  1250. and combating

  1251. here,

  1252. yet another

  1253. Corinthian

  1254. slogan.

  1255. But,

  1256. if that's

  1257. not the

  1258. case,

  1259. if the

  1260. ESV has

  1261. rendered the

  1262. verse properly

  1263. and many

  1264. translations do

  1265. it the same

  1266. way,

  1267. if this

  1268. isn't a

  1269. Corinthian

  1270. slogan,

  1271. then it would

  1272. seem that

  1273. Paul is not

  1274. saying that

  1275. sexual immorality

  1276. is worse

  1277. than other

  1278. sins,

  1279. sins.

  1280. But he

  1281. is saying

  1282. that it

  1283. has its

  1284. own sort

  1285. of seriousness.

  1286. It has

  1287. its own

  1288. particular

  1289. sort

  1290. of gravity.

  1291. Sex is

  1292. powerful.

  1293. Signifies the

  1294. whole life

  1295. union with

  1296. another

  1297. person.

  1298. Signifies the

  1299. redeeming union

  1300. of Christ

  1301. with his

  1302. church.

  1303. church.

  1304. church.

  1305. And it

  1306. does all

  1307. this through

  1308. a very

  1309. intimate and

  1310. vulnerable use

  1311. of our

  1312. God-given

  1313. bodies.

  1314. Perhaps this

  1315. verse is

  1316. simply Paul

  1317. being a

  1318. realist.

  1319. Sex is a

  1320. great and

  1321. powerful gift

  1322. and precisely

  1323. for that

  1324. reason,

  1325. its misuse

  1326. can bring

  1327. great harm.

  1328. A fire in

  1329. a fireplace

  1330. brings great

  1331. warmth and

  1332. joy to a

  1333. home.

  1334. But a

  1335. house on

  1336. fire brings

  1337. great sadness

  1338. and loss.

  1339. But in the

  1340. next verse,

  1341. Paul turns

  1342. toward the

  1343. positive.

  1344. Again with a

  1345. rhetorical,

  1346. do you not

  1347. know?

  1348. Do you not

  1349. know that your

  1350. body is a

  1351. temple of the

  1352. Holy Spirit?

  1353. Back in

  1354. chapter 3,

  1355. Paul called

  1356. the Corinthians

  1357. a temple of

  1358. the Holy Spirit

  1359. corporately,

  1360. as a church

  1361. together,

  1362. but now he

  1363. means it very

  1364. much personally.

  1365. Every individual

  1366. who believes in

  1367. Christ receives

  1368. the indwelling

  1369. presence of the

  1370. Holy Spirit and

  1371. as the end of

  1372. verse 19 says,

  1373. this comes as a

  1374. gift from

  1375. God.

  1376. It's not

  1377. something we

  1378. have to earn.

  1379. Notice Paul is

  1380. not saying here

  1381. in this passage

  1382. or anywhere

  1383. in his

  1384. writings.

  1385. You must be

  1386. moral so that

  1387. the Holy Spirit

  1388. can dwell in

  1389. you.

  1390. He's saying the

  1391. opposite.

  1392. The Holy Spirit

  1393. already dwells in

  1394. you by God's

  1395. grace.

  1396. Therefore,

  1397. be who you

  1398. are.

  1399. Your body is

  1400. a temple of

  1401. God's own

  1402. spirit now

  1403. already.

  1404. Now live as

  1405. if that's true.

  1406. And of course,

  1407. that means we

  1408. ought to seek

  1409. holy lives.

  1410. But at a

  1411. deeper level,

  1412. friends, it

  1413. means that we

  1414. ought to live

  1415. without being

  1416. haunted by

  1417. shame.

  1418. You see,

  1419. before you had

  1420. done one

  1421. thing right,

  1422. before you

  1423. had made

  1424. any progress

  1425. in righteousness

  1426. or holiness,

  1427. when you were

  1428. still utterly

  1429. dead in sin,

  1430. Christian brother

  1431. or sister,

  1432. God took up

  1433. residence within

  1434. you by his

  1435. Holy Spirit.

  1436. He looked at

  1437. you and said,

  1438. by virtue of

  1439. what Christ

  1440. my son has

  1441. done,

  1442. I'm coming to

  1443. live there

  1444. permanently.

  1445. I'm making it

  1446. my home.

  1447. And so he will

  1448. do for everyone

  1449. who trusts in

  1450. Christ.

  1451. Maybe you're here

  1452. this morning and

  1453. you've not been

  1454. fleeing sexual

  1455. immorality.

  1456. Maybe you've

  1457. fallen into it

  1458. time and

  1459. time and

  1460. time again.

  1461. And as a

  1462. result, shame

  1463. lingers in

  1464. every corner

  1465. of your life.

  1466. And you feel

  1467. that if someone

  1468. really saw you,

  1469. they wouldn't

  1470. love you.

  1471. And if someone

  1472. loved you,

  1473. they couldn't

  1474. have really

  1475. seen you.

  1476. But listen to

  1477. the good news

  1478. this morning.

  1479. No matter

  1480. how impure

  1481. and uninhabitable

  1482. you may feel,

  1483. if you've

  1484. placed your

  1485. trust in

  1486. Christ,

  1487. God himself

  1488. has taken

  1489. up residence

  1490. within.

  1491. You are

  1492. a temple

  1493. of the Holy

  1494. Spirit.

  1495. The same

  1496. Spirit who

  1497. when he

  1498. descended on

  1499. the Old

  1500. Testament

  1501. temple made

  1502. it so that

  1503. the priests

  1504. couldn't even

  1505. stand up

  1506. because his

  1507. presence was

  1508. so overwhelming

  1509. and so

  1510. glorious.

  1511. That's who's

  1512. in you.

  1513. That's who

  1514. you are.

  1515. Not a

  1516. mistake.

  1517. Not a

  1518. failure.

  1519. Not an

  1520. addict.

  1521. Not a

  1522. boarded up

  1523. home on

  1524. the edge

  1525. of town

  1526. where no

  1527. one wants

  1528. to live

  1529. but a

  1530. temple of

  1531. the Holy

  1532. Spirit.

  1533. So from

  1534. now on,

  1535. come live

  1536. that way.

  1537. Come live

  1538. that way.

  1539. Be who

  1540. you are.

  1541. Come clean

  1542. where you

  1543. need to

  1544. come clean.

  1545. There's no

  1546. shame here.

  1547. Break off

  1548. relationships

  1549. that you

  1550. need to

  1551. break off.

  1552. He'll

  1553. strengthen

  1554. you.

  1555. He'll be

  1556. with you.

  1557. Stop

  1558. living together.

  1559. It'll be

  1560. worth the

  1561. cost and

  1562. the weight.

  1563. get rid

  1564. of technology

  1565. where you

  1566. need to

  1567. get rid

  1568. of

  1569. technology.

  1570. You don't

  1571. really need

  1572. a smartphone

  1573. despite what

  1574. the world

  1575. might say.

  1576. Don't let

  1577. guilt and

  1578. shame and

  1579. fear hold

  1580. you in their

  1581. grip anymore.

  1582. glorify God

  1583. in your

  1584. body.

  1585. Your body

  1586. has a

  1587. God-given

  1588. purpose.

  1589. It's a

  1590. member of

  1591. Christ and

  1592. it's a

  1593. temple of

  1594. the Holy

  1595. Spirit.

  1596. But there's

  1597. one more

  1598. point that

  1599. Paul makes.

  1600. One more

  1601. reason to

  1602. glorify God

  1603. in our

  1604. bodies.

  1605. And this

  1606. fourth and

  1607. final reason

  1608. simply put

  1609. is the

  1610. cross.

  1611. you're

  1612. not your

  1613. own.

  1614. For you

  1615. were bought

  1616. with a

  1617. price.

  1618. So glorify

  1619. God in

  1620. your body.

  1621. You see

  1622. underneath the

  1623. Corinthian

  1624. attitude towards

  1625. sex and

  1626. the body

  1627. was the

  1628. belief that

  1629. at the

  1630. end of

  1631. the day

  1632. what they

  1633. did with

  1634. their bodies

  1635. was really

  1636. their own

  1637. business.

  1638. But when

  1639. we take

  1640. that attitude

  1641. and bring

  1642. it into

  1643. the light

  1644. of the

  1645. gospel we

  1646. see that

  1647. it just

  1648. can't be

  1649. so.

  1650. We don't

  1651. belong to

  1652. ourselves

  1653. anymore.

  1654. We belong

  1655. to Christ.

  1656. You see

  1657. because of

  1658. sin friends

  1659. we lived

  1660. under a

  1661. debt that

  1662. we could

  1663. never pay.

  1664. And that

  1665. debt grew

  1666. greater every

  1667. second of

  1668. every day

  1669. infinite upon

  1670. infinite upon

  1671. infinite.

  1672. A debt that

  1673. held us

  1674. wholly under

  1675. its power

  1676. body and

  1677. soul.

  1678. You might be

  1679. here this

  1680. morning living

  1681. under this

  1682. debt maybe

  1683. without even

  1684. realizing it and

  1685. you wonder why

  1686. there's a weight

  1687. on everything

  1688. you see and

  1689. experience and

  1690. know.

  1691. But there

  1692. is one who

  1693. came who

  1694. was able to

  1695. pay the

  1696. price to

  1697. lift the

  1698. debt and

  1699. he was not

  1700. just able but

  1701. willing to do

  1702. so.

  1703. To redeem

  1704. us he gave

  1705. up his own

  1706. body to

  1707. die on a

  1708. cross to

  1709. pay our

  1710. debt of

  1711. sin in

  1712. our place.

  1713. And now in

  1714. light of what

  1715. he's done

  1716. we're

  1717. gloriously not

  1718. our own

  1719. anymore.

  1720. He bought

  1721. us for

  1722. himself and

  1723. we belong

  1724. to him.

  1725. If you're

  1726. new to

  1727. Christianity

  1728. this is

  1729. really the

  1730. point around

  1731. which everything

  1732. else turns.

  1733. Christ

  1734. crucified.

  1735. God

  1736. the fact

  1737. that we

  1738. are so

  1739. sinful that

  1740. the perfect

  1741. son of

  1742. God had

  1743. to pay an

  1744. infinite price

  1745. for us his

  1746. own blood.

  1747. But the

  1748. fact that we

  1749. are so loved

  1750. and accepted

  1751. that he

  1752. gladly paid

  1753. it out.

  1754. Becoming a

  1755. Christian putting

  1756. your trust in

  1757. Jesus Christ

  1758. means embracing

  1759. these two

  1760. realities that

  1761. flow forth from

  1762. the cross that

  1763. we are

  1764. simultaneously sinful

  1765. and accepted.

  1766. And it means

  1767. entrusting your

  1768. whole life to

  1769. him.

  1770. The great

  1771. lifter of our

  1772. debt.

  1773. The great

  1774. purchaser of

  1775. our lives body

  1776. and soul.

  1777. And he

  1778. becomes the

  1779. Lord of your

  1780. life.

  1781. You listen to

  1782. what he says in

  1783. his word.

  1784. And by the

  1785. indwelling power

  1786. of the spirit

  1787. you're changed

  1788. more and more

  1789. to become like

  1790. him.

  1791. And you become

  1792. a part of his

  1793. people in the

  1794. world.

  1795. The family of

  1796. God.

  1797. The church.

  1798. Of course the

  1799. thought of being

  1800. no longer your

  1801. own as Paul

  1802. says at the end

  1803. of verse 19

  1804. can sound a bit

  1805. scary or

  1806. threatening can't

  1807. it?

  1808. And yet to come

  1809. under the

  1810. lordship of

  1811. Christ even

  1812. when it comes to

  1813. how we use our

  1814. bodies is the

  1815. most liberating

  1816. thing there is.

  1817. If it's true

  1818. that Jesus Christ

  1819. is our loving

  1820. creator and

  1821. redeemer then

  1822. surely belonging

  1823. to him and

  1824. doing what he

  1825. says and trusting

  1826. him is the most

  1827. liberating and

  1828. joyful thing we

  1829. could possibly

  1830. do.

  1831. Because he gave

  1832. his body for

  1833. us we can

  1834. gladly and

  1835. safely give our

  1836. bodies to him.

  1837. If he was

  1838. willing to go to

  1839. the cross for me

  1840. and love then

  1841. surely I can

  1842. trust him with my

  1843. everything body

  1844. included.

  1845. God's

  1846. God's

  1847. purpose.

  1848. Because it's a

  1849. member of

  1850. Christ.

  1851. Because it's a

  1852. temple of the

  1853. Holy Spirit and

  1854. ultimately because you

  1855. were bought with a

  1856. price because of all

  1857. that brothers and

  1858. sisters flee sexual

  1859. immorality and

  1860. instead glorify God

  1861. in your body.

  1862. flee sexual

  1863. immorality not

  1864. because sex

  1865. itself is awkward

  1866. or dirty or

  1867. taboo but because

  1868. God's vision and

  1869. purpose not just for

  1870. sex but for our

  1871. very bodies is so

  1872. much more glorious

  1873. and satisfying.

1874. And as we do so the

1875. world will see in us a

  1876. different way of

  1877. thinking about our

  1878. bodies.

1879. And the world will see

1880. in us a different way

  1881. of living as embodied

  1882. people in community.

1883. And by God's grace it

1884. will draw them to know

1885. and trust the risen Lord

  1886. Jesus for themselves.

1887. The one who gave up his

1888. body for us so that

  1889. our bodies might be

  1890. raised with his.

  1891. Let's pray.

  1892. Oh Father we come

  1893. before you this

  1894. morning having thought

  1895. about these words of

  1896. your Apostle Paul to

  1897. glorify you in our

  1898. bodies.

  1899. grace.

  1900. And we want to

  1901. pause and confess

  1902. this morning God

  1903. that that is often

  1904. so hard.

  1905. And Jesus we

  1906. recognize that there

  1907. is no difficulty,

  1908. no sin,

  1909. no temptation,

  1910. no hardship that you

  1911. yourself did not know

  1912. in its full measure

  1913. and full weight

  1914. of your grace.

  1915. During your earthly

  1916. ministry.

1917. And so we find in you

  1918. Lord our refuge

  1919. and our shield

  1920. and our strength.

1921. Fill us anew with your

  1922. Holy Spirit

1923. that we might live out

  1924. the vision of this

  1925. passage.

  1926. And God build us

  1927. into a community

  1928. of love and grace

  1929. and truth.

1930. Make us into a church

  1931. family where living

  1932. this kind of life

  1933. makes sense.

  1934. Where there is

  1935. fellowship and

  1936. friendship and

  1937. communion.

  1938. Where there is love

  1939. and acceptance.

1940. God I pray for those

  1941. who are undergoing

  1942. conviction of sin

  1943. this morning.

  1944. Areas of their life

1945. that they need to be

  1946. fleeing from.

1947. Oh God I pray that

  1948. you'd give them the

  1949. strength to do just

  1950. that.

  1951. Give them the courage

1952. to reach out to a

  1953. Christian friend

  1954. who can help them

  1955. in that fleeing.

  1956. And help them to

  1957. grasp the positive

  1958. vision that you have

  1959. for them.

  1960. Whether they be

  1961. single.

  1962. Whether they be

  1963. married.

  1964. Whether they expect

  1965. and hope one day

  1966. to be married.

  1967. Whether they expect

  1968. and realize that they

  1969. will live a life

  1970. of singleness all

  1971. their days.

  1972. Oh God help them

  1973. to see the glory

  1974. of living for you.

  1975. Help us to glorify

  1976. you God in our

  1977. bodies.

  1978. Amen.

  1979. Amen.

  1980. Amen.

  1981. Amen.

  1982. Amen.

  1983. Amen.
