  1. Thank you.

  2. Thank you.

  3. It astounds you to hear it.

  4. The shock and surprise is evident on all of your faces at this very moment.

  5. But it's true.

  6. Sometimes they lie to you.

  7. Now, we are even now in the middle of an election cycle.

  8. And I would wager if you pay close attention and keep both your eyes open and both of your ears open, you might catch a lie like this.

  9. You might catch one or two half-truths.

  10. A few exaggerations of fact.

  11. A few hyperbolic detours.

  12. Detours.

  13. A few taking of liberties.

  14. I know it surprises some of you.

  15. But for those of you who are not surprised by this, perhaps there are a few of you who came into church tonight knowing this particular secret already.

  16. Perhaps the greater surprise would be to hear that there may be a ruler who tells the truth.

  17. Perhaps you listen to the news every night.

  18. Perhaps on your way home or once at home.

  19. You listen to the news with your defenses held high.

  20. With thoroughgoing suspicion about all the words that come out of politicians' mouths.

  21. Now, if this more accurately describes you, then I suspect our text and this sermon tonight may actually surprise you.

  22. For this sermon is about a ruler who comes and causes to make, he causes his people to flourish.

  23. A ruler who rules in justice and righteousness.

  24. A ruler who keeps every promise he makes.

  25. If you were to find such a ruler, would you vote for him?

  26. Would you even campaign for him?

  27. Would you put a bumper sticker on your car about him?

  28. Would you put a lawn sign out about him?

  29. What precisely would you do if you found a ruler who never lied to you?

  30. Tonight, I want to speak with you about a ruler who keeps every promise he ever made.

  31. You won't find the stories about him in the newspaper.

  32. Instead, we have to go to a different text.

  33. The text we're going to look at to discover this ruler is 2 Samuel 23, verses 1 through 7.

    2 Samuel 23:1–7

  34. You can turn there with me.

  35. We'll be there the whole evening.

  36. 2 Samuel 23, 1 through 7.

  37. And my hope tonight is that as we read this text together, we'll see one major point.

  38. This is the one point.

  39. God's children celebrate when God's king is crowned.

  40. God's children celebrate when God's king is crowned.

  41. God's king is crowned.

  42. Let's look at the text.

  43. 2 Samuel 23, verses 1 through 7.

    2 Samuel 23:1–7

  44. Now, these are the last words of David.

  45. The oracle of David.

  46. The son of Jesse.

  47. The oracle of the man who was raised on high.

  48. The anointed of the God of Jacob.

  49. The sweet psalmist of Israel.

  50. The spirit of the Lord speaks by me.

  51. His word is on my tongue.

  52. The God of Israel has spoken.

  53. The rock of Israel has said to me,

  54. When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of God,

  55. he dawns on them like the morning light,

  56. like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,

  57. like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.

  58. For does not my house stand so with God?

  59. For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,

  60. ordered in all things and secure.

  61. For he will not cause,

  62. will he not cause to prosper all of my help and my desire?

  63. But worthless men are all like thorns that are thrown away.

  64. For they cannot be taken with the hand,

  65. but the man who touches them arms himself with iron

  66. and the shaft of a spear,

  67. and they are utterly consumed with fire.

  68. Now in order to understand this text before us this evening,

  69. a bit of context might be useful.

  70. This text tells us that these are the last words of David,

  71. which is a strange designation

  72. because after these last words of David,

  73. David keeps on talking.

  74. He's got plenty more to say after this.

  75. You could read this as a simple error by the narrator,

  76. but even if a cursory proofreading shows us that this is not the case,

  77. these are not in fact the last words of David,

  78. perhaps something else is intended.

  79. And I suggest that's exactly what is intended.

  80. These are not chronologically the last words of David.

  81. These are rather the culminating words of David.

  82. These words are supposed to describe in a capsule form the entirety of David's reign.

  83. They epitomize his rule.

  84. These words are presented to us as an oracle,

  85. which is a rare thing for David.

  86. An oracle or a prophetic utterance that David makes under the influence of the Spirit of God.

  87. Do you see that there?

  88. A long introduction.

  89. The oracle of David.

  90. The oracle of the man who was raised on high.

  91. And then in the second verse,

  92. the Spirit of the Lord speaks by me.

  93. These are not only David's words.

  94. These are God's words.

  95. David is looking back as a historian over his rule.

  96. But the Spirit might be saying something prophetic as well as historical.

  97. We'll come back to that toward the end.

  98. So there's a little context for what's going on here.

  99. The centerpiece of this passage is verses 3 and 4,

  100. where we find the reason that God's children rejoice when God's king is crowned.

  101. And that's where I want to spend most of our time this evening tonight,

  102. looking at 3 and 4.

  103. Look at these verses again.

  104. The God of Israel has spoken.

  105. The rock of Israel has said to me,

  106. when one rules justly over men,

  107. ruling in the fear of God,

  108. he dawns on them like the morning light,

  109. like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,

  110. like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.

  111. These words David speaks about himself.

  112. He is the Lord's anointed one in this passage.

  113. He is the one who deals justly with his people.

  114. Why?

  115. First off, because he fears God.

  116. He knows himself to be one who is himself under authority.

  117. And therefore, he is supposed to rule over those over whom he has authority with justice.

  118. And look at the metaphors that are used here for the reign of this king.

  119. He dawns on them like the morning light,

  120. the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,

  121. rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.

  122. These are metaphors of flourishing as in a garden,

  123. the things that are required to make the plants that this king is husbanding flourish,

  124. the unmitigated,

  125. unclouded sun,

  126. the mist of rain that waters this garden.

  127. This is a king who serves his people,

  128. who rules on behalf of his people.

  129. That's how you tell a good king,

  130. that he rules on behalf of the people over whom he has authority.

  131. He does not use the people over whom he has authority for his own purposes.

  132. He causes them to flourish.

  133. This flourishing metaphor,

  134. this garden metaphor,

  135. I don't think is accidental.

  136. Do you remember what man and woman's first task was?

  137. To go and have dominion,

  138. caring,

  139. husbanding of a garden.

  140. To bring forth the fruits of the earth.

  141. To cooperate with God in making the world flourish.

  142. To be his agents in the world,

  143. causing goodness and justice

  144. and beauty and love

  145. to reign over all the earth.

  146. This is what we were meant for.

  147. This was our first task.

  148. And the good king has not forgotten that.

  149. The good king remembers that he,

  150. as a descendant of Adam,

  151. is charged with the task of

  152. being God's agent in the world.

  153. Of causing the world to bring forth much fruit.

  154. To beautify the world.

  155. To cause it to abound with goodness.

  156. This is why

  157. God's children celebrate

  158. when God's king is crowned.

  159. Because God's king is one who knows

  160. that he is charged

  161. with bringing the earth to flourishing.

  162. And the people over whom he rules

  163. rejoice when they see the world

  164. righted from its wrongs,

  165. beautified from its ugliness,

  166. encompassed in love

  167. rather than wrapped in violence.

  168. How could God's children

  169. not celebrate

  170. that sort of thing?

  171. Now, you may be skeptical

  172. about this claim

  173. that freedom and flourishing

  174. come from submission

  175. to good authorities,

  176. rulers.

  177. I'm even using the word

  178. kings over and over.

  179. Those of us in the audience

  180. who are Americans,

  181. we are taught from our youth

  182. that kings are bad things

  183. and we're supposed to revolt against them.

  184. And here I am preaching to you

  185. about the goodness of a king,

  186. that we should indeed even celebrate

  187. when certain kings are around.

  188. Isn't that treasonous to my American citizenship?

  189. Well, I don't think so.

  190. I do think the American ethos

  191. does not train us well

  192. to sympathize with this idea.

  193. We think that freedom and flourishing

  194. mean doing what is right in our own eyes.

  195. But the Bible has something to say about this.

  196. Even this story,

  197. when we remember where this story is

  198. in the overall narrative of the Bible,

  199. we have reason to doubt

  200. our American idea

  201. that freedom and flourishing

  202. are doing whatever is right

  203. in our own eyes.

  204. Do you remember where this story begins?

  205. Even back before the king,

  206. in the book of Judges.

  207. Judges is one of those

  208. really depressing books

  209. over and over.

  210. They come into the land

  211. and it's racked in evil

  212. and a judge comes up

  213. and takes care of business.

  214. The judge dies

  215. and the text says

  216. there was no judge in Israel.

  217. Every man did what was right

  218. in his own eyes.

  219. We think this is a utopia.

  220. The Bible clearly depicts it

  221. as anarchy,

  222. violence.

  223. The poor and the weak

  224. are not taken care of

  225. when everyone does what he wants.

  226. Something is needed

  227. to solve the problem

  228. of human violence.

  229. And anarchy is not the answer.

  230. And that's where

  231. 1 and 2 Samuel come in.

  232. The people want a king.

  233. And God says,

  234. okay,

  235. you need a ruler.

  236. I want it to be your king.

  237. But if the people

  238. yearn so much for a king,

  239. Samuel,

  240. give them one.

  241. And at first,

  242. it seemed like it was going to work.

  243. Saul,

  244. this stalwart man

  245. who inspired hope

  246. and strength

  247. into his people,

  248. flourished for a while.

  249. And then he fell away.

  250. And David came.

  251. David,

  252. the good king,

  253. the man after God's own heart.

  254. Surely,

  255. he is the answer

  256. to the problems

  257. of the wickedness

  258. of his people.

  259. Except when you read

  260. the stories of David,

  261. it seems like

  262. he is wracked

  263. by the same wickedness

  264. of his people.

  265. We know the Bible,

  266. the narrative,

  267. the long arc

  268. of the Bible

  269. has said that somehow

  270. the answer to our problems

  271. is a king,

  272. but not Saul

  273. and not David.

  274. So who?

  275. At the beginning

  276. of 1 Samuel,

  277. the passage that brackets

  278. these ending songs

  279. in 2 Samuel,

  280. you see the woman

  281. named Hannah,

  282. a barren

  283. and lonely

  284. woman

  285. who pleads

  286. with God

  287. for deliverance

  288. for a child.

  289. And when God

  290. provides a child,

  291. she sings a song,

  292. a song of prophecy.

  293. And she says this,

  294. She sees the Lord

  295. is going to do something

  296. through one

  297. whom she calls

  298. the anointed.

  299. And here in this text,

  300. we see David

  301. takes this on

  302. for himself.

  303. Look there

  304. in verse 5,

  305. Does not my house

  306. stand so with God?

  307. David sees this

  308. as applying to himself.

  309. This is why

  310. he sings this song

  311. toward the end

  312. of his life.

  313. David is a historian

  314. chronicling

  315. his own reign.

  316. What's the grounds

  317. for him saying

  318. that this applies

  319. to his kingship?

  320. Verse 5 again,

  321. He has made with me

  322. an everlasting covenant,

  323. ordered in all things

  324. and secure.

  325. What's David's reason

  326. for saying this?

  327. What's the proof

  328. that God has made

  329. a covenant with him?

  330. Well, first off,

  331. God has spoken to him.

  332. Second and thirdly,

  333. David,

  334. over the course

  335. of the last several chapters,

  336. has destroyed

  337. the enemies of God.

  338. Something that today

  339. looks to us

  340. like a needless,

  341. senseless bloodbath.

  342. But here's what he's done,

  343. little by little.

  344. He has cleared out

  345. a space of peace

  346. for his son

  347. to construct the temple.

  348. Solomon will not need

  349. to marshal grand armies

  350. to defeat

  351. any more Philistines.

  352. David's already done that.

  353. Solomon can muster

  354. the strength of Israel

  355. to build the dwelling place

  356. of God.

  357. This is one of David's

  358. greatest feats.

  359. things.

  360. But,

  361. if we read this passage

  362. only as history,

  363. then it certainly

  364. must be

  365. pure mockery.

  366. For we've already seen

  367. the dreadful things

  368. that David has done.

  369. And this next chapter,

  370. after this one,

  371. will be no different.

  372. The list of his mighty men,

  373. those come next.

  374. The mighty men

  375. that did all these things,

  376. that won all these battles

  377. with David.

  378. Do you know who that last name

  379. in that list is?

  380. Uriah the Hittite.

  381. The narrator mentions last

  382. Uriah the Hittite,

  383. ensuring that no matter

  384. who else the listener

  385. remembers,

  386. what other names

  387. in this long list of names

  388. the listener remembers,

  389. he will remember

  390. Uriah the Hittite.

  391. What's so special

  392. about Uriah the Hittite?

  393. Well,

  394. this one

  395. of David's mighty men

  396. had the prestige

  397. of being killed

  398. by his king,

  399. of having his wife

  400. stolen by his king.

  401. David is guilty

  402. of the blood

  403. of Uriah the Hittite,

  404. and the narrator

  405. won't let us forget it.

  406. He puts his name

  407. right at the end

  408. of the list.

  409. And right after that,

  410. David will take a census,

  411. which shows his desire

  412. to trust in his own

  413. military strength

  414. rather than God,

  415. and God is angry

  416. about this

  417. and causes a pestilence

  418. to come and kill

  419. 70,000 of David's men.

  420. David is the one

  421. who rules

  422. in perfect uprightness.

  423. The narrator

  424. does not want us

  425. to read it

  426. so simply.

  427. When these two

  428. contradictory pieces,

  429. apparently contradictory

  430. pieces of information

  431. are presented to us

  432. side by side,

  433. the narrator

  434. wants us to think.

  435. On the one hand,

  436. the just one

  437. rules over men.

  438. This is David

  439. ruling in the fear of God,

  440. causing the people

  441. to flourish.

  442. On the other hand,

  443. he's imperfect

  444. at best.

  445. What the narrator,

  446. I think,

  447. wants us to see

  448. is this.

  449. That David

  450. in this passage

  451. is pointing

  452. beyond himself.

  453. Indeed,

  454. all of Samuel

  455. is pointing

  456. beyond itself.

  457. It ends

  458. and culminates

  459. with David,

  460. but it ends

  461. with David's failures

  462. as well as

  463. his successes.

  464. The Bible

  465. has told us

  466. that a king

  467. is necessary

  468. to restrain

  469. human wickedness

  470. and to cause

  471. the earth

  472. to flourish.

  473. But David's

  474. not a great,

  475. a perfect candidate

  476. for this.

  477. Do you remember

  478. what I said here?

  479. That David

  480. speaks not only

  481. as a historian,

  482. but in the Holy Spirit,

  483. speaks also

  484. as a prophet.

  485. David is looking

  486. forward to

  487. another king

  488. that is to come

  489. that rules

  490. in justice

  491. and righteousness.

  492. Look here

  493. in verse 5

  494. again.

  495. David says,

  496. God has made

  497. with him

  498. an everlasting

  499. covenant,

  500. ordered in all

  501. things

  502. and secure.

  503. more.

  504. Historically,

  505. we know

  506. that a united

  507. kingdom only

  508. lasted for about

  509. one more generation

  510. after David

  511. and the whole

  512. thing went to pot.

  513. How can this

  514. be said to be

  515. an everlasting

  516. covenant?

  517. Christians know

  518. the answer

  519. to this.

  520. The answer

  521. is that

  522. David was

  523. always supposed

  524. to point

  525. to somebody,

  526. the better

  527. David,

  528. the true

  529. king,

  530. who would

  531. truly cause

  532. justice

  533. to reign

  534. on the earth,

  535. who would

  536. restore the

  537. garden that

  538. once was lost,

  539. that would

  540. cause the

  541. earth and

  542. all the people

  543. in his care

  544. to flourish.

  545. And this

  546. king came

  547. in riding

  548. on a donkey,

  549. was crowned

  550. not in gold

  551. but in thorns,

  552. was lifted

  553. up not on a

  554. throne but on

  555. a cross,

  556. and did not

  557. live over his

  558. people but died

  559. for his people.

  560. How can this

  561. one be a

  562. king?

  563. Jesus can be

  564. a king because

  565. he did not

  566. stay dead.

  567. And after

  568. his death,

  569. he rose again,

  570. and after his

  571. resurrection,

  572. he ascended.

  573. He ascended

  574. not simply

  575. like a divine

  576. elevator bumping

  577. up into the

  578. basement of

  579. heaven.

  580. No, he

  581. ascended like

  582. a king ascends

  583. to a throne.

  584. And all the

  585. way back here

  586. in Samuel,

  587. hundreds and

  588. hundreds of

  589. years earlier,

  590. we have it

  591. foretold that

  592. a true king

  593. would come,

  594. God's chosen

  595. king would be

  596. crowned,

  597. and God's

  598. cherished children

  599. would celebrate.

  600. So when we

  601. read this,

  602. we ought not

  603. think only of

  604. it as the

  605. history of

  606. David's reign,

  607. but also as

  608. the prophecy

  609. of the coming

  610. king,

  611. the one who

  612. is the desire

  613. of all nations,

  614. the joy of

  615. every longing

  616. heart.

  617. what is in

  618. this text for

  619. us?

  620. What does

  621. this mean for

  622. us, who no

  623. longer search

  624. for kings,

  625. but nevertheless

  626. find ourselves

  627. to be in an

  628. election cycle?

  629. I think this

  630. text tells us a

  631. few things.

  632. First, for

  633. those who are

  634. in authority.

  635. Notice the

  636. way a just

  637. ruler exercises

  638. authority.

  639. authority,

  640. they exercise

  641. authority in

  642. such a way as

  643. to cause the

  644. earth to

  645. flourish.

  646. Again, these

  647. garden metaphors,

  648. restoring Eden,

  649. bringing the

  650. fullness of

  651. earth, the

  652. fullness of

  653. God's creation

  654. to blossoming.

  655. those of you

  656. who exercise

  657. authority in

  658. ways big or

  659. small, either

  660. in elected

  661. office or

  662. even in a

  663. parent, being

  664. a parent, or

  665. even in an

  666. office, do

  667. you have

  668. anybody in

  669. your life whom

  670. you serve over

  671. whom you have

  672. authority?

  673. If you do, you

  674. have the

  675. opportunity to

  676. work with

  677. God to cause

  678. the earth to

  679. flourish, to

  680. make it, like

  681. David for

  682. Solomon, easier

  683. for your

  684. children and

  685. those who

  686. come after

  687. you to

  688. worship God.

  689. That's a

  690. choice you

  691. have.

  692. Or, you

  693. can be like

  694. those in

  695. verse 6 and

  696. 7.

  697. Worthless men

  698. are like

  699. thorns that

  700. are thrown

  701. away.

  702. Do you

  703. remember what

  704. Adam's curse

  705. was in the

  706. garden?

  707. That his

  708. work would be

  709. marked by

  710. thistles and

  711. thorns.

  712. that now

  713. Eden would

  714. be overcome

  715. with these

  716. thorns.

  717. And here

  718. David speaks

  719. of worthless

  720. men as

  721. these thorns.

  722. The very

  723. thorns that

  724. the one who

  725. is to

  726. shepherd and

  727. husband the

  728. garden needs

  729. to cut down

  730. with iron and

  731. steel and

  732. throw into

  733. the fire.

  734. For those of

  735. us who exercise

  736. authority, this is

  737. our choice.

  738. To work with

  739. God in causing

  740. the earth to

  741. flourish or to

  742. be one of those

  743. thorns that needs

  744. to be pulled up

  745. and thrown into

  746. the fire.

  747. Use your

  748. authority,

  749. therefore, to

  750. cause the earth

  751. to flourish.

  752. To cause your

  753. children and

  754. your coworkers and

  755. your family and

  756. all those around

  757. you, over whom

  758. you have authority

  759. or not, to

  760. flourish.

  761. set an example

  762. in your life

  763. of justice

  764. and mercy

  765. and love.

  766. Ruling like

  767. this king in

  768. the fear of

  769. God.

  770. Is your life

  771. lived in the

  772. tangible fear

  773. of God, knowing

  774. that you will

  775. give an account

  776. one day to

  777. this king

  778. Jesus who

  779. now sits

  780. enthroned over

  781. heaven and

  782. earth?

  783. This choice

  784. is yours and

  785. David would

  786. beg you,

  787. exercise your

  788. authority in

  789. the fear of

  790. God, causing

  791. those around

  792. you to

  793. flourish.

  794. Pray for the

  795. people that

  796. surround you.

  797. Be a good

  798. example for

  799. them.

  800. Encourage them

  801. and strengthen

  802. them.

  803. What about

  804. those of us

  805. who don't have

  806. authority or

  807. who are under

  808. authority?

  809. None of us

  810. is president

  811. in this room

  812. and that means

  813. we are all at

  814. least under

  815. one authority.

  816. What should

  817. we do?

  818. What does

  819. this text teach

  820. us about how

  821. we are to

  822. behave under

  823. authority?

  824. The first

  825. thing it tells

  826. us is this.

  827. Do not be

  828. cynical.

  829. Do not be

  830. cynical about

  831. your leaders.

  832. A cynic is

  833. one who has

  834. given over to

  835. despair, who

  836. has thought our

  837. leaders are so

  838. corrupt that

  839. there is nothing

  840. for which to

  841. rejoice any

  842. longer.

  843. I will never

  844. get my hopes

  845. up.

  846. I won't be

  847. fooled again.

  848. men.

  849. But this

  850. passage talks

  851. about just

  852. rulers who

  853. bring flourishing

  854. to their

  855. people and

  856. worthless men

  857. who grow up

  858. like weeds and

  859. are fit only to

  860. be cut down

  861. and burned.

  862. This text thinks

  863. there is a real

  864. difference between

  865. these people.

  866. We should pray

  867. that God

  868. might send

  869. good rulers

  870. so that the

  871. lands in which

  872. we dwell might

  873. flourish like a

  874. garden, not

  875. wither like a

  876. desert.

  877. desert.

  878. We ought to

  879. pray to God

  880. that we have

  881. occasion to

  882. celebrate the

  883. crowning of

  884. one whom God

  885. has chosen to

  886. lead us.

  887. We cannot be

  888. despairing.

  889. The Christian is

  890. commanded to

  891. hope.

  892. Hope for what?

  893. Not that this

  894. world will be

  895. somehow transformed

  896. into heaven little

  897. by little.

  898. No.

  899. We cannot be

  900. given over to

  901. despair.

  902. So this text

  903. teaches us

  904. that we

  905. ought not

  906. despair.

  907. It also

  908. teaches us

  909. that we

  910. ought not

  911. follow false

  912. messiahs.

  913. Humans

  914. are hard

  915. wired to

  916. seek for

  917. messiahs.

  918. That's why

  919. we believe

  920. high-flying

  921. rhetoric every

  922. four years.

  923. But that

  924. rhetoric and

  925. those messiahs

  926. will always

  927. disappoint us.

  928. messiahs.

  929. Those

  930. messiahs share

  931. our sins.

  932. They

  933. participate in

  934. our flaws.

  935. You know,

  936. the only way to

  937. ensure that you

  938. will never be

  939. disappointed by

  940. your rulers is

  941. to plan to be

  942. disappointed by

  943. your rulers.

  944. The only way

  945. never to be

  946. disappointed by

  947. your rulers is

  948. to plan to be

  949. disappointed by

  950. your rulers.

  951. They won't let

  952. you down if you

  953. plan on them

  954. letting you down.

  955. don't make

  956. them into

  957. messiahs.

  958. We

  959. incline toward

  960. one of these

  961. directions,

  962. either being

  963. messianic about

  964. our favorite

  965. person, our

  966. favorite elected

  967. official, or

  968. being cynical.

  969. They're all the

  970. same.

  971. Crooks, thieves,

  972. bums, throw

  973. them out.

  974. We're tempted

  975. to think this

  976. way about all

  977. of those in

  978. authority over

  979. us.

  980. Our bosses,

  981. probably even

  982. more proximate

  983. to us than

  984. the president,

  985. are the

  986. particular objects

  987. of our

  988. scorn.

  989. Don't

  990. mess, don't

  991. make a

  992. messiah out

  993. of anybody

  994. above you.

  995. Don't be

  996. cynical claiming

  997. that there is

  998. no real

  999. justice in

  1000. this world.

  1001. Instead, pray

  1002. for your

  1003. leaders.

  1004. Pray for

  1005. your leaders.

  1006. Pray that

  1007. God would

  1008. give us the

  1009. occasion to

  1010. celebrate the

  1011. rule of

  1012. justice.

  1013. God would

  1014. send ones

  1015. to us who

  1016. would come

  1017. to us like

  1018. the morning

  1019. light, like

  1020. sun shining

  1021. forth on a

  1022. cloudless

  1023. morning and

  1024. rain that

  1025. makes the

  1026. earth bring

  1027. forth grass.

  1028. Be thankful

  1029. for the small

  1030. ways we see

  1031. that now.

  1032. Christians are

  1033. taught to

  1034. expect very

  1035. little from

  1036. the rulers of

  1037. this world.

  1038. God.

  1039. We are also

  1040. taught to

  1041. thank the

  1042. Lord for

  1043. every shred

  1044. of grace

  1045. that we

  1046. see.

  1047. And for

  1048. those who

  1049. have eyes

  1050. to see and

  1051. ears to

  1052. hear, there

  1053. are millions

  1054. of shreds

  1055. of grace for

  1056. which to be

  1057. thankful.

  1058. Do you

  1059. thank the

  1060. Lord when

  1061. you come

  1062. to a red

  1063. light, which

  1064. has prevented

  1065. you from

  1066. smashing into

  1067. another car,

  1068. coming in the

  1069. opposite direction?

  1070. There's a sign

  1071. of good

  1072. governance.

  1073. Do you

  1074. praise the

  1075. Lord with

  1076. eager rejoicing

  1077. when in the

  1078. middle of the

  1079. night, in a

  1080. thunderstorm, you

  1081. are awoken by

  1082. the scraping of

  1083. a snowplow out

  1084. on the street,

  1085. doing a job to

  1086. make sure you

  1087. can get to

  1088. work the next

  1089. day?

  1090. This is a

  1091. little shred

  1092. of grace.

  1093. Good governance

  1094. is happening.

  1095. When the mail

  1096. arrives at your

  1097. home, assuming

  1098. it doesn't

  1099. include only

  1100. bills, we

  1101. should rejoice.

  1102. Something has

  1103. gone right in

  1104. the world.

  1105. Today I was

  1106. not falsely

  1107. imprisoned.

  1108. There are

  1109. plenty of

  1110. countries in

  1111. which that's

  1112. not the

  1113. case.

  1114. We ought to

  1115. rejoice and

  1116. be thankful for

  1117. every shred of

  1118. grace we see.

  1119. In a world that

  1120. is given over to

  1121. cynicism, what

  1122. kind of people

  1123. would we be if

  1124. we were pervasively

  1125. thankful for all

  1126. of the shreds of

  1127. grace that we see?

  1128. we can in fact

  1129. in this world

  1130. get dim visions

  1131. of what it would

  1132. look like for

  1133. the dawn to

  1134. come on us

  1135. like a morning

  1136. light and for

  1137. the sun to rise

  1138. on cloudless

  1139. mornings and the

  1140. waters to water

  1141. the earth bringing

  1142. forth grass.

  1143. We can see

  1144. these things.

  1145. When we see

  1146. them we ought to

  1147. rejoice.

  1148. hope for the

  1149. coming king.

  1150. The king that

  1151. David himself

  1152. looked forward

  1153. to.

  1154. Because this

  1155. king is coming.

  1156. this king

  1157. has said behold

  1158. I am coming

  1159. quickly.

  1160. With a real

  1161. crown on his

  1162. head this time.

  1163. And a real

  1164. white horse upon

  1165. which he is

  1166. riding.

  1167. This king is

  1168. coming.

  1169. The flourishing

  1170. garden of Eden

  1171. that our parents

  1172. forsook will one

  1173. day flourish again.

  1174. And those who

  1175. love Christ can

  1176. live there.

  1177. There in this

  1178. garden in the

  1179. middle of the

  1180. city of the

  1181. new Jerusalem

  1182. where God

  1183. himself sits

  1184. enthroned.

  1185. This is the

  1186. king that our

  1187. hearts yearn for

  1188. every election

  1189. cycle.

  1190. Every campaign

  1191. promise we hear

  1192. that we allow

  1193. ourselves to

  1194. believe even

  1195. slightly is a

  1196. picture of our

  1197. yearning for this

  1198. good king.

  1199. The failures

  1200. and the

  1201. successes of

  1202. this world's

  1203. leaders are

  1204. are both

  1205. designed to

  1206. point our

  1207. minds to the

  1208. coming of God's

  1209. true anointed

  1210. one.

  1211. The successes of

  1212. these leaders

  1213. because they're

  1214. only a dim

  1215. picture of what

  1216. full flourishing

  1217. will look like

  1218. when Christ is

  1219. finally enthroned

  1220. and subdues all

  1221. of his enemies.

  1222. And the failures

  1223. of this world's

  1224. leaders ought to

  1225. cause us to

  1226. raise our eyes

  1227. higher up to

  1228. that divine

  1229. king as well

  1230. knowing that

  1231. he will never

  1232. let us down.

  1233. None who

  1234. trusted in the

  1235. Lord were ever

  1236. put to shame.

  1237. This Messiah

  1238. does not

  1239. disappoint.

  1240. This is the

  1241. ruler who keeps

  1242. every campaign

  1243. promise he's

  1244. ever made.

  1245. This is the

  1246. Messiah our

  1247. hearts truly

  1248. yearn for.

  1249. And this

  1250. Messiah is

  1251. coming.

  1252. And when

  1253. this chosen

  1254. king of God

  1255. comes, God's

  1256. children will

  1257. celebrate at his

  1258. coronation.

  1259. How will we

  1260. celebrate?

  1261. Well we are

  1262. told in the

  1263. Bible that not

  1264. only will this

  1265. king come and

  1266. rid the world of

  1267. his enemies, but

  1268. he will also wed

  1269. himself to his

  1270. bride.

  1271. This is a

  1272. king betrothed

  1273. to a bride.

  1274. And we who

  1275. are in his

  1276. church are

  1277. that bride.

  1278. The celebration

  1279. that will be

  1280. ours when

  1281. this king

  1282. comes is

  1283. a bridal

  1284. feast.

  1285. It's a

  1286. wedding supper.

  1287. It's a

  1288. meal.

  1289. With bread

  1290. and wine

  1291. there for

  1292. the taking

  1293. and union

  1294. with our

  1295. king.

  1296. What a

  1297. celebration

  1298. that will

  1299. be.

  1300. And that

  1301. celebration is

  1302. precisely what

  1303. we look forward

  1304. to now.

  1305. As we come to

  1306. the Lord's

  1307. table to

  1308. drink the

  1309. cup and

  1310. take the

  1311. bread.

  1312. So as we

  1313. come, think

  1314. on the fact

  1315. that this

  1316. king died

  1317. for us to

  1318. cleanse us of

  1319. our sins and

  1320. to give us

  1321. new life.

  1322. Think also

  1323. of that great

  1324. wedding feast

  1325. that it

  1326. foreshadows

  1327. to which

  1328. all those

  1329. who love

  1330. Jesus are

  1331. invited to

  1332. come.

  1333. Let's pray.

  1334. Lord, we do

  1335. thank you for

  1336. this promise that

  1337. you will come

  1338. and right all

  1339. of the world's

  1340. wrongs.

  1341. That when your

  1342. king is
