  1. Thank you.

  2. Thank you.

  3. It astounds you to hear it.

  4. The shock and surprise is evident on all of your faces at this very moment.

  5. But it's true.

  6. Sometimes they lie to you.

  7. Now, we are even now in the middle of an election cycle.

  8. And I would wager if you pay close attention and keep both your eyes open and both of your ears open, you might catch a lie like this.

  9. You might catch one or two half-truths, a few exaggerations of fact, a few hyperbolic detours, a few taking of liberties.

  10. I know it surprises some of you.

  11. But for those of you who are not surprised by this, perhaps there are a few of you who came into church tonight knowing this particular secret already.

  12. Perhaps the greater surprise would be to hear that there may be a ruler who tells the truth.

  13. Perhaps you listen to the news every night, perhaps on your way home or once at home.

  14. You listen to the news with your defenses held high with thoroughgoing suspicion about all the words that come out of politicians' mouths.

  15. Now, if this more accurately describes you, then I suspect our text and this sermon tonight may actually surprise you.

  16. For this sermon is about a ruler who comes and causes to make, he causes his people to flourish.

  17. A ruler who rules in justice and righteousness.

  18. A ruler who keeps every promise he makes.

  19. If you were to find such a ruler, would you vote for him?

  20. Would you even campaign for him?

  21. Would you put a bumper sticker on your car about him?

  22. Would you put a lawn sign out about him?

  23. What precisely would you do if you found a ruler who never lied to you?

  24. Tonight I want to speak with you about a ruler who keeps every promise he ever made.

  25. You won't find the stories about him in the newspaper.

  26. Instead, we have to go to a different text.

  27. The text we're going to look at to discover this ruler is 2 Samuel 23, verses 1 through 7.

    2 Samuel 23:1–7

  28. You can turn there with me.

  29. We'll be there the whole evening.

  30. 2 Samuel 23, 1 through 7.

  31. And my hope tonight is that as we read this text together, we'll see one major point.

  32. This is the one point.

  33. God's children celebrate when God's king is crowned.

  34. God's children celebrate when God's king is crowned.

  35. Let's look at the text.

  36. 2 Samuel 23, verses 1 through 7.

    2 Samuel 23:1–7

  37. Now, these are the last words of David.

  38. The oracle of David.

  39. The son of Jesse.

  40. The oracle of the man who was raised on high.

  41. The anointed of the God of Jacob.

  42. The sweet psalmist of Israel.

  43. The spirit of the Lord speaks by me.

  44. His word is on my tongue.

  45. The God of Israel has spoken.

  46. The rock of Israel has said to me,

  47. When one rules justly over men,

  48. ruling in the fear of God,

  49. he dawns on them like the morning light,

  50. like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning.

  51. Like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.

  52. For does not my house stand so with God?

  53. For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,

  54. ordered in all things and secure.

  55. For he will not cause,

  56. will he not cause to prosper all of my help and my desire?

  57. But worthless men are all like thorns that are thrown away.

  58. For they cannot be taken with the hand,

  59. but the man who touches them arms himself with iron

  60. and the shaft of a spear.

  61. And they are utterly consumed with fire.

  62. Now in order to understand this text before us this evening,

  63. a bit of context might be useful.

  64. This text tells us that these are the last words of David,

  65. which is a strange designation

  66. because after these last words of David,

  67. David keeps on talking.

  68. He's got plenty more to say after this.

  69. You could read this as a simple error by the narrator,

  70. but even if a cursory proofreading shows us

  71. that this is not the case,

  72. these are not in fact the last words of David,

  73. perhaps something else is intended.

  74. And I suggest that's exactly what is intended.

  75. These are not chronologically the last words of David.

  76. These are rather the culminating words of David.

  77. These words are supposed to describe in a capsule form

  78. the entirety of David's reign.

  79. They epitomize his rule.

  80. These words are presented to us as an oracle,

  81. which is a rare thing for David.

  82. An oracle or a prophetic utterance

  83. that David makes under the influence of the spirit of God.

  84. Do you see that there?

  85. A long introduction.

  86. The oracle of David.

  87. The oracle of the man who was raised on high.

  88. And then in the second verse,

  89. the spirit of the Lord speaks by me.

  90. These are not only David's words.

  91. These are God's words.

  92. David is looking back as a historian over his rule.

  93. But the spirit might be saying something prophetic

  94. as well as historical.

  95. We'll come back to that toward the end.

  96. So there's a little context for what's going on here.

  97. The centerpiece of this passage is verses 3 and 4,

  98. where we find the reason that God's children rejoice

  99. when God's king is crowned.

  100. And that's where I want to spend most of our time this evening tonight,

  101. looking at 3 and 4.

  102. Look at these verses again.

  103. The God of Israel has spoken.

  104. The rock of Israel has said to me,

  105. When one rules justly over men,

  106. ruling in the fear of God,

  107. he dawns on them like the morning light,

  108. like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,

  109. like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.

  110. These words David speaks about himself.

  111. He is the Lord's anointed one in this passage.

  112. He is the one who deals justly with his people.

  113. Why?

  114. First off, because he fears God.

  115. He knows himself to be one who is himself under authority.

  116. And therefore, he is supposed to rule over those

  117. over whom he has authority with justice.

  118. And look at the metaphors that are used here

  119. for the reign of this king.

  120. He dawns on them like the morning light,

  121. the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,

  122. rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.

  123. These are metaphors of flourishing as in a garden,

  124. the things that are required to make the plants

  125. that this king is husbanding flourish,

  126. the unmitigated, unclouded sun,

  127. the mist of rain that waters this garden.

  128. This is a king who serves his people,

  129. who rules on behalf of his people.

  130. That's how you tell a good king,

  131. that he rules on behalf of the people

  132. over whom he has authority.

  133. He does not use the people over whom he has authority

  134. for his own purposes.

  135. He causes them to flourish.

  136. This flourishing metaphor,

  137. this garden metaphor,

  138. I don't think is accidental.

  139. Do you remember what man and woman's first task was?

  140. to go and have dominion,

  141. caring husbanding of a garden,

  142. to bring forth the fruits of the earth,

  143. to cooperate with God in making the world flourish,

  144. to be his agents in the world,

  145. causing goodness and justice and beauty

  146. and love to reign over all the earth.

  147. This is what we were meant for.

  148. This was our first task.

  149. And the good king has not forgotten that.

  150. The good king remembers that he,

  151. as a descendant of Adam,

  152. is charged with the task of being God's agent in the world,

  153. of causing the world to bring forth much fruit,

  154. to beautify the world,

  155. to cause it to abound with goodness.

  156. This is why God's children celebrate

  157. when God's king is crowned.

  158. Because God's king is one who knows

  159. that he is charged with bringing the earth to flourishing.

  160. And the people over whom he rules

  161. rejoice when they see the world

  162. righted from its wrongs,

  163. beautified from its ugliness,

  164. encompassed in love rather than wrapped in violence.

  165. How could God's children not celebrate that sort of thing?

  166. Now, you may be skeptical about this claim

  167. that freedom and flourishing come from

  168. submission to good authorities, rulers.

  169. I'm even using the word kings over and over.

  170. Those of us in the audience who are Americans,

  171. we are taught from our youth

  172. that kings are bad things

  173. and we're supposed to revolt against them.

  174. And here I am preaching to you

  175. about the goodness of a king

  176. that we should indeed even celebrate

  177. when certain kings are around.

  178. Isn't that treasonous to my American citizenship?

  179. Well, I don't think so.

  180. I do think the American ethos

  181. does not train us well

  182. to sympathize with this idea.

  183. We think that freedom and flourishing

  184. mean doing what is right in our own eyes.

  185. But the Bible has something to say about this.

  186. Even this story.

  187. When we remember where this story is

  188. in the overall narrative of the Bible,

  189. we have reason to doubt

  190. our American idea

  191. that freedom and flourishing

  192. are doing whatever is right

  193. in our own eyes.

  194. Do you remember where this story begins?

  195. Even back before the king.

  196. In the book of Judges.

  197. Judges is one of those really depressing books.

  198. Over and over.

  199. They come into the land

  200. and it's racked in evil

  201. and a judge comes up

  202. and takes care of business.

  203. The judge dies

  204. and the text says

  205. there was no judge in Israel.

  206. Every man did what was right

  207. in his own eyes.

  208. We think this is a utopia.

  209. The Bible clearly depicts it as anarchy.

  210. Violence.

  211. The poor and the weak

  212. are not taken care of

  213. when everyone does what he wants.

  214. Something is needed

  215. to solve the problem

  216. of human violence.

  217. And anarchy is not the answer.

  218. And that's where

  219. 1 and 2 Samuel come in.

  220. The people want a king.

  221. And God says

  222. okay

  223. you need a ruler.

  224. I want it to be your king.

  225. But if the people

  226. yearn so much for a king

  227. Samuel give them one.

  228. And at first

  229. it seemed like it was going to work.

  230. Saul

  231. the stalwart man

  232. who inspired

  233. hope

  234. and strength

  235. into his people

  236. flourished for a while.

  237. And then he fell away.

  238. And David came.

  239. David

  240. the good king

  241. the man after God's own heart.

  242. Surely

  243. he is the answer

  244. to the problems

  245. of the wickedness

  246. of his people.

  247. Except when you read

  248. the stories of David

  249. it seems like

  250. he is racked

  251. by the same wickedness

  252. of his people.

  253. Samuel.

  254. We know the Bible

  255. the narrative

  256. the long arc

  257. of the Bible

  258. has said that somehow

  259. the answer to our problems

  260. is a king

  261. but not Saul

  262. and not David.

  263. So who?

  264. at the beginning

  265. of 1st Samuel

  266. the passage

  267. that brackets

  268. these ending

  269. songs

  270. in 2nd Samuel

  271. you see the woman

  272. named Hannah

  273. a barren

  274. and lonely

  275. woman

  276. who pleads

  277. with God

  278. for deliverance

  279. for a child.

  280. and when God

  281. provides a child

  282. she sings a song

  283. a song of prophecy

  284. and she says this

  285. the adversaries

  286. of the Lord

  287. shall be broken

  288. in pieces

  289. against them

  290. he will thunder

  291. in heaven

  292. the Lord

  293. will judge

  294. the ends

  295. of the earth

  296. he will give strength

  297. to his king

  298. and exalt

  299. the horn

  300. of his anointed.

  301. She sees

  302. the Lord

  303. is going to do

  304. something

  305. through one

  306. whom she calls

  307. the anointed.

  308. And here in this text

  309. we see David

  310. takes this on

  311. for himself.

  312. Look there

  313. in verse 5

  314. Does not

  315. my house

  316. stand so

  317. with God?

  318. David sees this

  319. as applying

  320. to himself

  321. this is why

  322. he sings this song

  323. toward the end

  324. of his life

  325. David is a historian

  326. chronicling

  327. his own reign

  328. What's the grounds

  329. for him saying

  330. that this

  331. applies to his kingship?

  332. Verse 5 again

  333. He has made with me

  334. an everlasting covenant

  335. ordered in all things

  336. and secure

  337. What's David's

  338. reason for saying

  339. this?

  340. What's the proof

  341. that God has made

  342. a covenant with him?

  343. Well first off

  344. God has spoken to him

  345. Second and thirdly

  346. David over the course

  347. of the last several

  348. chapters

  349. has destroyed

  350. the enemies of God

  351. something that today

  352. looks to us

  353. like a needless

  354. senseless bloodbath

  355. but here's what

  356. he's done

  357. little by little

  358. he has cleared

  359. out a space

  360. of peace

  361. for his son

  362. to construct

  363. the temple

  364. Solomon will not

  365. need to marshal

  366. grand armies

  367. to defeat

  368. any more Philistines

  369. David's already

  370. done that

  371. Solomon can

  372. muster the strength

  373. of Israel

  374. to build the

  375. dwelling place

  376. of God

  377. this is one of

  378. David's greatest

  379. feats

  380. but

  381. if we read this

  382. passage only as

  383. history

  384. then it certainly

  385. must be

  386. pure mockery

  387. for we've already

  388. seen the dreadful

  389. things that David

  390. has done

  391. and this next

  392. chapter after this

  393. one will be no

  394. different

  395. the list of his

  396. mighty men

  397. those come next

  398. the mighty men

  399. that did all

  400. these things

  401. that won all

  402. these battles

  403. with David

  404. do you know

  405. who that last

  406. name in that

  407. list is

  408. Uriah the

  409. Hittite

  410. the narrator

  411. mentions last

  412. Uriah the

  413. Hittite

  414. ensuring that

  415. no matter

  416. who else

  417. the listener

  418. remembers

  419. what other

  420. names

  421. this long

  422. list of

  423. names

  424. the listener

  425. remembers

  426. he will

  427. remember

  428. Uriah the

  429. Hittite

  430. what's so

  431. special about

  432. Uriah the

  433. Hittite

  434. well this

  435. one

  436. of David's

  437. mighty men

  438. had the

  439. prestige of

  440. being killed

  441. by his

  442. king

  443. of having

  444. his wife

  445. stolen

  446. by his

  447. king

  448. David

  449. is guilty

  450. of the

  451. blood

  452. of Uriah

  453. the Hittite

  454. and the

  455. narrator

  456. won't let

  457. us forget

  458. it

  459. he puts

  460. his name

  461. right at

  462. the end

  463. of the

  464. list

  465. and right

  466. after that

  467. David

  468. will take

  469. a census

  470. which shows

  471. his desire

  472. to trust

  473. in his

  474. own

  475. military

  476. strength

  477. rather than

  478. God

  479. and God

  480. is angry

  481. about this

  482. and causes

  483. a pestilence

  484. to come

  485. and kill

  486. 70,000

  487. of David's

  488. men

  489. David is

  490. the one

  491. who rules

  492. in perfect

  493. uprightness

  494. the narrator

  495. does not

  496. want us

  497. to read

  498. it so

  499. simply

  500. when these

  501. two

  502. contradictory

  503. pieces

  504. apparently

  505. contradictory

  506. pieces of

  507. information

  508. are presented

  509. to us

  510. side by

  511. side

  512. the narrator

  513. wants us

  514. to think

  515. on the one

  516. hand

  517. the just

  518. one

  519. rules

  520. over

  521. men

  522. this

  523. is

  524. David

  525. ruling

  526. in the

  527. fear

  528. of

  529. God

  530. causing

  531. the people

  532. to flourish

  533. on the

  534. other

  535. hand

  536. he's

  537. imperfect

  538. at best

  539. what the narrator

  540. I think

  541. wants us

  542. to see

  543. is this

  544. that David

  545. in this

  546. passage

  547. is pointing

  548. beyond

  549. himself

  550. indeed

  551. all of

  552. Samuel

  553. is pointing

  554. beyond

  555. itself

  556. it ends

  557. and culminates

  558. with David

  559. but it

  560. ends with

  561. David's

  562. failures

  563. as well

  564. as his

  565. successes

  566. the Bible

  567. has told us

  568. that a king

  569. is necessary

  570. to restrain

  571. human wickedness

  572. and to cause

  573. the earth

  574. to flourish

  575. but David

  576. is not a

  577. great

  578. a perfect

  579. candidate

  580. for this

  581. do you

  582. remember

  583. what I

  584. said

  585. here

  586. that David

  587. speaks

  588. not only

  589. as a

  590. historian

  591. but in

  592. the

  593. Holy Spirit

  594. speaks

  595. also

  596. as a

  597. prophet

  598. David

  599. is looking

  600. forward

  601. to

  602. another

  603. king

  604. that is

  605. to come

  606. that rules

  607. in justice

  608. and righteousness

  609. look here

  610. in verse

  611. five

  612. again

  613. David

  614. says

  615. God

  616. has made

  617. with him

  618. an everlasting

  619. covenant

  620. ordered in

  621. all things

  622. and secure

  623. historically

  624. we know

  625. that a

  626. united

  627. kingdom

  628. only lasted

  629. for about

  630. one more

  631. generation

  632. after David

  633. and the

  634. whole thing

  635. went to

  636. pot

  637. how can

  638. this be

  639. said to be

  640. an everlasting

  641. covenant

  642. Christians know

  643. the answer

  644. to this

  645. the answer

  646. is

  647. that David

  648. was always

  649. supposed to

  650. point to

  651. somebody

  652. the better

  653. David

  654. the true

  655. king

  656. who would

  657. truly

  658. cause

  659. justice

  660. to reign

  661. on the

  662. earth

  663. who would

  664. restore

  665. the garden

  666. that once

  667. was lost

  668. that would

  669. cause

  670. the earth

  671. and all

  672. the people

  673. in his

  674. care

  675. to flourish

  676. and this

  677. king came

  678. in

  679. riding

  680. on a

  681. donkey

  682. was crowned

  683. not in

  684. gold

  685. but in

  686. thorns

  687. was lifted

  688. up not

  689. on a

  690. throne

  691. but on

  692. a cross

  693. and did

  694. not live

  695. over his

  696. people

  697. but died

  698. for his

  699. people

  700. how can

  701. this one

  702. be a

  703. king

  704. Jesus

  705. can be a

  706. king

  707. because he

  708. did not

  709. stay

  710. dead

  711. and after

  712. his death

  713. he rose

  714. again

  715. and after

  716. his resurrection

  717. he ascended

  718. he ascended

  719. not simply

  720. like a

  721. divine elevator

  722. bumping up

  723. into the

  724. basement

  725. of heaven

  726. no he

  727. ascended

  728. like a

  729. king

  730. ascends

  731. to a

  732. throne

  733. and all

  734. the way

  735. back here

  736. in Samuel

  737. hundreds and

  738. hundreds of

  739. years earlier

  740. we have it

  741. foretold

  742. that a

  743. true king

  744. would come

  745. God's

  746. chosen king

  747. would be

  748. crowned

  749. and God's

  750. cherished

  751. children

  752. would celebrate

  753. so when we

  754. read this

  755. we ought not

  756. think only of

  757. it as

  758. the history

  759. of David's

  760. reign

  761. but also

  762. as the

  763. prophecy

  764. of the

  765. coming

  766. king

  767. the one

  768. who is

  769. the desire

  770. of all

  771. nations

  772. the joy

  773. of every

  774. longing

  775. heart

  776. what is

  777. in this

  778. text

  779. for us

  780. what does

  781. this mean

  782. for us

  783. who no

  784. longer search

  785. for kings

  786. but nevertheless

  787. find ourselves

  788. to be in an

  789. election cycle

  790. I think

  791. this text

  792. tells us a

  793. few things

  794. first for

  795. those who

  796. are in

  797. authority

  798. notice the

  799. way a

  800. just ruler

  801. exercises

  802. authority

  803. they exercise

  804. authority

  805. in such a

  806. way as to

  807. cause the

  808. earth to

  809. flourish

  810. again these

  811. garden metaphors

  812. restoring Eden

  813. bringing the

  814. fullness of

  815. earth

  816. the fullness

  817. of God's

  818. creation

  819. to blossoming

  820. those of you

  821. who exercise

  822. authority in

  823. ways big or

  824. small either in

  825. elected office or

  826. even in a

  827. parent being a

  828. parent or even

  829. in an office

  830. do you have

  831. anybody in your

  832. life whom you

  833. serve over whom

  834. you have

  835. authority

  836. if you do

  837. you have the

  838. opportunity

  839. to work with

  840. God to

  841. cause the

  842. earth to

  843. flourish

  844. to make it

  845. like David

  846. for Solomon

  847. easier for

  848. your children

  849. and those who

  850. come after

  851. you to

  852. worship God

  853. that's a

  854. choice you

  855. have

  856. or

  857. you can be

  858. like those in

  859. verse 6 and

  860. 7

  861. worthless men

  862. are like

  863. thorns that

  864. are thrown

  865. away

  866. do you

  867. remember what

  868. Adam's curse

  869. was in the

  870. garden

  871. that his

  872. work would

  873. be marked

  874. by thistles

  875. and thorns

  876. that now

  877. Eden would

  878. be overcome

  879. with these

  880. thorns

  881. and here

  882. David speaks

  883. worthless men

  884. as these

  885. thorns

  886. the very

  887. thorns that

  888. the one who

  889. is to

  890. shepherd and

  891. husband the

  892. garden needs

  893. to cut down

  894. with iron and

  895. steel and

  896. throw into the

  897. fire

  898. for those of

  899. us who

  900. exercise

  901. authority this

  902. is our

  903. choice

  904. to work

  905. with God

  906. in causing

  907. the earth

  908. to flourish

  909. or to be

  910. one of those

  911. thorns that

  912. needs to be

  913. pulled up

  914. and thrown

  915. into the

  916. fire

  917. use your

  918. authority

  919. therefore

  920. to cause

  921. the earth

  922. to flourish

  923. to cause

  924. your children

  925. and your

  926. co-workers

  927. and your

  928. family and

  929. all those

  930. around you

  931. over whom

  932. you have

  933. authority or

  934. not

  935. to flourish

  936. set an

  937. example in

  938. your life

  939. of justice

  940. and mercy

  941. and love

  942. ruling like

  943. this king

  944. in the fear

  945. of God

  946. is your

  947. life lived

  948. in the

  949. tangible

  950. fear of

  951. God

  952. knowing that

  953. you will

  954. give an

  955. account one

  956. day to

  957. this king

  958. Jesus who

  959. now sits

  960. enthroned

  961. over heaven

  962. and earth

  963. this choice

  964. is yours

  965. and David

  966. would beg

  967. you

  968. exercise

  969. your authority

  970. in the fear

  971. of God

  972. causing those

  973. around you

  974. to flourish

  975. pray for the

  976. people that

  977. surround you

  978. be a good

  979. example for

  980. them

  981. encourage them

  982. strengthen them

  983. what about

  984. those of us

  985. who don't have

  986. authority or

  987. who are under

  988. authority

  989. none of us

  990. is president

  991. in this room

  992. and that means

  993. we are all

  994. at least under

  995. one authority

  996. what should we

  997. do what does

  998. this text teach

  999. us about how

  1000. we are to

  1001. behave under

  1002. authority

  1003. the first thing

  1004. it tells us

  1005. is this

  1006. do not be

  1007. cynical

  1008. do not be

  1009. cynical about

  1010. your leaders

  1011. a cynic

  1012. is one who

  1013. has given

  1014. over to

  1015. despair

  1016. who has

  1017. thought our

  1018. leaders are

  1019. so corrupt

  1020. that there is

  1021. nothing for

  1022. which to

  1023. rejoice any

  1024. longer

  1025. I will never

  1026. get my hopes

  1027. up

  1028. I won't be

  1029. fooled again

  1030. but this

  1031. passage

  1032. talks about

  1033. just rulers

  1034. who bring

  1035. flourishing to

  1036. their people

  1037. and worthless

  1038. men who grow

  1039. up like weeds

  1040. and are fit

  1041. only to be

  1042. cut down

  1043. and burned

  1044. this text

  1045. thinks there's

  1046. a real difference

  1047. between these

  1048. people

  1049. we should pray

  1050. that God

  1051. might send

  1052. good rulers

  1053. so that the

  1054. lands in which

  1055. we dwell

  1056. might flourish

  1057. like a garden

  1058. not wither

  1059. like a desert

  1060. we ought to

  1061. pray to God

  1062. that we have

  1063. occasion to

  1064. celebrate

  1065. the crowning

  1066. of one whom

  1067. God has chosen

  1068. to lead

  1069. us

  1070. we cannot

  1071. be despairing

  1072. the Christian

  1073. is commanded

  1074. to hope

  1075. hope for what

  1076. not that this

  1077. world will be

  1078. somehow transformed

  1079. into heaven

  1080. little by little

  1081. no

  1082. we cannot

  1083. be given over

  1084. to despair

  1085. so this text

  1086. teaches us

  1087. that we ought

  1088. not despair

  1089. it also teaches

  1090. us that we

  1091. ought not

  1092. follow false

  1093. messiahs

  1094. humans

  1095. are hard

  1096. wired

  1097. to seek

  1098. for messiahs

  1099. that's why

  1100. we believe

  1101. high flying

  1102. rhetoric

  1103. every four

  1104. years

  1105. but that

  1106. rhetoric

  1107. and those

  1108. messiahs

  1109. will always

  1110. disappoint us

  1111. those messiahs

  1112. share our

  1113. sins

  1114. they participate

  1115. in our

  1116. flaws

  1117. you know

  1118. the only way

  1119. to ensure

  1120. that you

  1121. will never

  1122. be disappointed

  1123. by your

  1124. rulers

  1125. is to plan

  1126. to be

  1127. disappointed

  1128. by your

  1129. rulers

  1130. the only

  1131. way never

  1132. to be

  1133. disappointed

  1134. by your

  1135. rulers

  1136. is to

  1137. plan

  1138. to be

  1139. disappointed

  1140. by your

  1141. rulers

  1142. they won't

  1143. let you

  1144. down

  1145. if you

  1146. plan on

  1147. them

  1148. letting

  1149. you

  1150. down

  1151. don't

  1152. make them

  1153. into

  1154. messiahs

  1155. we

  1156. incline

  1157. toward one

  1158. of these

  1159. directions

  1160. either

  1161. being

  1162. messianic

  1163. about our

  1164. favorite

  1165. person

  1166. our

  1167. favorite

  1168. elected

  1169. official

  1170. or being

  1171. cynical

  1172. they're all

  1173. the same

  1174. crooks

  1175. thieves

  1176. bums

  1177. throw them

  1178. out

  1179. we're tempted

  1180. to think

  1181. this way

  1182. about all

  1183. of those

  1184. in authority

  1185. over us

  1186. our bosses

  1187. probably

  1188. even more

  1189. proximate

  1190. to us

  1191. than the

  1192. president

  1193. are the

  1194. particular

  1195. objects

  1196. of our

  1197. scorn

  1198. don't

  1199. mess

  1200. don't make

  1201. a messiah

  1202. out of

  1203. anybody

  1204. above you

  1205. don't

  1206. be

  1207. cynical

  1208. claiming

  1209. that

  1210. there

  1211. is

  1212. no

  1213. real

  1214. justice

  1215. in

  1216. this

  1217. world

  1218. instead

  1219. pray

  1220. for your

  1221. leaders

  1222. pray

  1223. for your

  1224. leaders

  1225. pray

  1226. that

  1227. God

  1228. would

  1229. give

  1230. us

  1231. the

  1232. occasion

  1233. to

  1234. celebrate

  1235. the

  1236. rule

  1237. of

  1238. justice

  1239. pray

  1240. that

  1241. God

  1242. would

  1243. send

  1244. ones

  1245. to

  1246. us

  1247. who

  1248. would

  1249. come

  1250. to

  1251. us

  1252. like

  1253. the

  1254. morning

  1255. light

  1256. like

  1257. sun

  1258. shining

  1259. forth

  1260. on a

  1261. cloudless

  1262. morning

  1263. and rain

  1264. that

  1265. makes

  1266. the earth

  1267. bring forth

  1268. grass

  1269. be

  1270. thankful

  1271. for the

  1272. small ways

  1273. we see

  1274. that now

  1275. Christians

  1276. are taught

  1277. to expect

  1278. very little

  1279. from the

  1280. rulers

  1281. of this

  1282. world

  1283. we are

  1284. also taught

  1285. to thank

  1286. the Lord

  1287. for every

  1288. shred

  1289. of grace

  1290. that we

  1291. see

  1292. and for

  1293. those who

  1294. have eyes

  1295. to see

  1296. and ears

  1297. to hear

  1298. there are

  1299. millions

  1300. of shreds

  1301. of grace

  1302. for which

  1303. to be

  1304. thankful

  1305. do you

  1306. thank the

  1307. Lord

  1308. when you

  1309. come to

  1310. a red

  1311. light

  1312. which has

  1313. prevented

  1314. you from

  1315. smashing

  1316. into another

  1317. car

  1318. coming in

  1319. the opposite

  1320. direction

  1321. there's a

  1322. sign of

  1323. good

  1324. governance

  1325. do you

  1326. praise

  1327. the Lord

  1328. with eager

  1329. rejoicing

  1330. when in

  1331. the middle

  1332. of the

  1333. night

  1334. in a

  1335. thunderstorm

  1336. you are

  1337. awoken

  1338. by the

  1339. scraping

  1340. of a

  1341. snowplow

  1342. out on

  1343. the

  1344. street

  1345. doing

  1346. a

  1347. job

  1348. to

  1349. make

  1350. sure

  1351. you

  1352. can

  1353. get

  1354. to

  1355. work

  1356. the

  1357. next

  1358. day

  1359. this

  1360. is

  1361. a

  1362. little

  1363. shred

  1364. of

  1365. grace

  1366. good

  1367. governance

  1368. is

  1369. happening

  1370. when the

  1371. mail

  1372. arrives

  1373. at your

  1374. home

  1375. assuming

  1376. it

  1377. doesn't

  1378. include

  1379. only

  1380. bills

  1381. we

  1382. should

  1383. rejoice

  1384. something

  1385. has

  1386. gone

  1387. right

  1388. in

  1389. the

  1390. world

  1391. today

  1392. I

  1393. was

  1394. not

  1395. falsely

  1396. imprisoned

  1397. there

  1398. are

  1399. plenty

  1400. of

  1401. countries

  1402. in which

  1403. that's

  1404. not

  1405. the

  1406. case

  1407. we

  1408. ought

  1409. to

  1410. rejoice

  1411. and

  1412. be

  1413. thankful

  1414. for

  1415. every

  1416. shred

  1417. of

  1418. grace

  1419. we

  1420. see

  1421. in a

  1422. world

  1423. that is

  1424. given

  1425. over

  1426. to

  1427. cynicism

  1428. what

  1429. kind

  1430. of

  1431. people

  1432. would

  1433. we

  1434. be

  1435. if

  1436. we

  1437. were

  1438. pervasively

  1439. thankful

  1440. for

  1441. all of

  1442. the

  1443. shreds

  1444. of

  1445. grace

  1446. that

  1447. we

  1448. see

  1449. we

  1450. can

  1451. in

  1452. fact

  1453. in

  1454. this

  1455. world

  1456. get

  1457. dim

  1458. visions

  1459. of

  1460. what

  1461. it

  1462. would

  1463. look

  1464. like

  1465. for

  1466. the

  1467. dawn

  1468. to

  1469. come

  1470. on

  1471. us

  1472. like

  1473. a

  1474. morning

  1475. light

  1476. and

  1477. for

  1478. the

  1479. sun

  1480. to

  1481. rise

  1482. on

  1483. cloudless

  1484. mornings

  1485. and

  1486. the

  1487. waters

  1488. to

  1489. water

  1490. the

  1491. earth

  1492. bringing

  1493. forth

  1494. grass

  1495. we

  1496. can

  1497. see

  1498. these

  1499. things

  1500. when

  1501. we

  1502. see

  1503. them

  1504. we

  1505. ought

  1506. to

  1507. rejoice

  1508. and

  1509. finally

  1510. this

  1511. text

  1512. teaches

  1513. us

  1514. to

  1515. hope

  1516. hope

  1517. for

  1518. the

  1519. coming

  1520. king

  1521. the

  1522. king

  1523. that

  1524. David

  1525. himself

  1526. looked

  1527. forward

  1528. to

  1529. because

  1530. this

  1531. king

  1532. is

  1533. coming

  1534. this

  1535. Jesus

  1536. has

  1537. said

  1538. behold

  1539. I

  1540. am

  1541. coming

  1542. quickly

  1543. with

  1544. a real

  1545. crown

  1546. on his

  1547. head

  1548. this

  1549. time

  1550. and

  1551. a

  1552. real

  1553. white

  1554. horse

  1555. upon

  1556. which

  1557. he

  1558. is

  1559. riding

  1560. this

  1561. king

  1562. is

  1563. coming

  1564. the

  1565. flourishing

  1566. garden

  1567. of Eden

  1568. that our

  1569. parents

  1570. forsook

  1571. will

  1572. one

  1573. day

  1574. flourish

  1575. again

  1576. and

  1577. those

  1578. who

  1579. love

  1580. Christ

  1581. can

  1582. live

  1583. there

  1584. there

  1585. in

  1586. this

  1587. garden

  1588. in

  1589. the

  1590. middle

  1591. of

  1592. the

  1593. city

  1594. of

  1595. the

  1596. new

  1597. Jerusalem

  1598. where

  1599. God

  1600. himself

  1601. sits

  1602. enthroned

  1603. this

  1604. is

  1605. the

  1606. king

  1607. that

  1608. our

  1609. hearts

  1610. yearn

  1611. for

  1612. every

  1613. election

  1614. cycle

  1615. every

  1616. campaign

  1617. promise

  1618. we hear

  1619. that we

  1620. allow

  1621. ourselves

  1622. to

  1623. believe

  1624. even

  1625. slightly

  1626. is a

  1627. picture

  1628. of our

  1629. yearning

  1630. for

  1631. this

  1632. good

  1633. king

  1634. the

  1635. failures

  1636. and the

  1637. successes

  1638. of this

  1639. world's

  1640. leaders

  1641. are both

  1642. designed

  1643. to point

  1644. our

  1645. minds

  1646. to the

  1647. coming

  1648. of

  1649. God's

  1650. true

  1651. anointed

  1652. one

  1653. the

  1654. successes

  1655. of these

  1656. leaders

  1657. because

  1658. they're

  1659. only

  1660. a dim

  1661. picture

  1662. of what

  1663. full

  1664. flourishing

  1665. will look

  1666. like

  1667. when

  1668. Christ

  1669. is

  1670. finally

  1671. enthroned

  1672. and

  1673. subdues

  1674. all of

  1675. his

  1676. enemies

  1677. and

  1678. the

  1679. failures

  1680. of this

  1681. world's

  1682. leaders

  1683. ought to

  1684. cause

  1685. us

  1686. to

  1687. raise

  1688. our

  1689. eyes

  1690. higher

  1691. up

  1692. to

  1693. that

  1694. divine

  1695. king

  1696. as

  1697. well

  1698. knowing

  1699. that

  1700. he

  1701. will

  1702. never

  1703. let

  1704. us

  1705. down

  1706. none

  1707. who

  1708. trusted

  1709. in

  1710. the

  1711. Lord

  1712. were

  1713. ever

  1714. put

  1715. to

  1716. shame

  1717. this

  1718. Messiah

  1719. does

  1720. not

  1721. disappoint

  1722. this

  1723. is

  1724. the

  1725. ruler

  1726. who

  1727. keeps

  1728. every

  1729. campaign

  1730. promise

  1731. he's

  1732. ever

  1733. made

  1734. this

  1735. is

  1736. the

  1737. Messiah

  1738. our

  1739. hearts

  1740. truly

  1741. yearn

  1742. for

  1743. and

  1744. this

  1745. Messiah

  1746. is

  1747. coming

  1748. and

  1749. when

  1750. this

  1751. chosen

  1752. king

  1753. of

  1754. God

  1755. comes

  1756. God's

  1757. children

  1758. will

  1759. celebrate

  1760. at his

  1761. coronation

  1762. how

  1763. will we

  1764. celebrate

  1765. well

  1766. we are

  1767. told

  1768. in the

  1769. Bible

  1770. that

  1771. not

  1772. only

  1773. will

  1774. this

  1775. king

  1776. come

  1777. and

  1778. rid

  1779. the

  1780. world

  1781. of

  1782. his

  1783. enemies

  1784. but

  1785. he

  1786. will

  1787. also

  1788. wed

  1789. himself

  1790. to

  1791. his

  1792. bride

  1793. this

  1794. is

  1795. a

  1796. king

  1797. betrothed

  1798. to

  1799. a

  1800. bride

  1801. and

  1802. we

  1803. who

  1804. are

  1805. in

  1806. his

  1807. church

  1808. are

  1809. that

  1810. bride

  1811. the

  1812. celebration

  1813. that

  1814. will

  1815. be

  1816. ours

  1817. when

  1818. this

  1819. king

  1820. comes

  1821. is

  1822. a

  1823. bridal

  1824. feast

  1825. it's

  1826. a

  1827. wedding

  1828. supper

  1829. it's

  1830. a

  1831. meal

  1832. with

  1833. bread

  1834. and

  1835. wine

  1836. there

  1837. for

  1838. the

  1839. taking

  1840. and

  1841. union

  1842. with

  1843. our

  1844. king

  1845. what

  1846. a

  1847. celebration

  1848. that

  1849. will

  1850. be

  1851. and

  1852. that

  1853. celebration

  1854. is

  1855. precisely

  1856. what

  1857. we

  1858. look

  1859. forward

  1860. to

  1861. now

  1862. as

  1863. we

  1864. come

  1865. to

  1866. the

  1867. Lord's

  1868. table

  1869. to

  1870. drink

  1871. the

  1872. cup

  1873. and

  1874. take

  1875. the

  1876. bread

  1877. so

  1878. as

  1879. we

  1880. come

  1881. think

  1882. on

  1883. the

  1884. fact

  1885. that

  1886. this

  1887. king

  1888. died

  1889. for

  1890. us

  1891. to

  1892. cleanse

  1893. us

  1894. of

  1895. our

  1896. sins

  1897. and

  1898. to

  1899. give

  1900. us

  1901. new

  1902. life

  1903. think

  1904. also

  1905. of

  1906. that

  1907. great

  1908. wedding

  1909. feast

  1910. that

  1911. it

  1912. foreshadows

  1913. to

  1914. which

  1915. all

  1916. those

  1917. who

  1918. love

  1919. Jesus

  1920. are

  1921. invited

  1922. to

  1923. come

  1924. let's

  1925. pray

  1926. Lord

  1927. we

  1928. do

  1929. thank

  1930. you

  1931. for

  1932. this

  1933. promise

  1934. that

  1935. you

  1936. will

  1937. come

  1938. and

  1939. right

  1940. all

  1941. of

  1942. the

  1943. world's

  1944. wrongs

  1945. that

  1946. when

  1947. your

  1948. king

  1949. is

  1950. coronated

  1951. your

  1952. children

  1953. will

  1954. celebrate

  1955. thank

  1956. you

  1957. that

  1958. you

  1959. have

  1960. put

  1961. before

  1962. us

  1963. the

  1964. possibility

  1965. of

  1966. real

  1967. joy

  1968. no

  1969. the

  1970. promise

  1971. of

  1972. real

  1973. joy

  1974. promises

  1975. from

  1976. a

  1977. king

  1978. who

  1979. never

  1980. broke

  1981. a

  1982. promise

  1983. stir

  1984. our

  1985. hearts

  1986. with

  1987. eager

  1988. longing

  1989. for

  1990. your

  1991. reign

  1992. Lord

  1993. Christ

  1994. even

  1995. now

  1996. as we

  1997. come

  1998. to

  1999. your

  2000. table

  2001. I

  2002. pray

  2003. these

  2004. things

  2005. in the

  2006. name

  2007. of

  2008. Jesus

  2009. Amen
