  1. If you're looking at the new Bible, that is page 956.

  2. We are resuming our series in 1 Corinthians after taking a short break around Easter time.

  3. But we'll be plowing ahead, entering into the second half of this book.

  4. So let's read together 1 Corinthians chapter 8, reading the whole chapter this morning.

    1 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  5. Now concerning food offered to idols.

  6. We know that all of us possess knowledge.

  7. This knowledge pops up, but love builds up.

  8. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know.

  9. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.

  10. Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that an idol has no real existence

  11. and that there is no God but one.

  12. For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords.

  13. Yet for us, there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist.

  14. And one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

  15. However, not all possess this knowledge.

  16. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol,

  17. and their conscience being weak is defiled.

  18. Food will not commend us to God.

  19. We are no worse off if we do not eat and no better off if we do.

  20. But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.

  21. For if anyone who sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple,

  22. will he not be encouraged if his conscience is weak to eat food offered to idols?

  23. And so by your knowledge, this weak person is destroyed.

  24. The brother from whom Christ died.

  25. Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.

  26. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

  27. Well, the topic of today's sermon is food sacrificed to idols.

  28. At least that's the headache of the ESV.

  29. If you were raised in a Western culture, that topic might seem completely irrelevant.

  30. You might wonder, why does Paul spend the next three chapters discussing this issue?

  31. What, if anything, does this have to do with me?

  32. You know, a few years ago, somebody actually admitted to me that they had looked at the sermon card

  33. and read the passage that we were going to be preaching on

  34. and decided that it just wasn't worth coming to church that day.

  35. So I'm glad you didn't do that.

  36. I'm wondering for you, don't tune out.

  37. Here's a couple reasons why this passage is relevant.

  38. At first, the issue of food offered to idols is still relevant in many cultures.

  39. Recently, I was talking to another pastor who had preached for 1 Corinthians to his church.

  40. And the members of his church were mostly African and Caribbean immigrants.

  41. And he said, you know, a whole section about sex and marriage, chapters 6 and 7.

  42. I thought that could be controversial, but pretty much everyone seemed to agree,

  43. in principle at least, with what Paul was saying.

  44. But then we got the food offered to idols.

  45. And this was the most controversial section of the whole book.

  46. One person said, whenever I go home and my mom puts a meal,

  47. she'll pour out some of the food on an image that sits in our front yard

  48. as a way of warding off evil spirits.

  49. Or maybe you're from an Asian culture.

  50. What about the traditional meals eaten in honor of ancestors?

  51. Or is it in worship of ancestors?

  52. Are they harmless cultural traditions?

  53. Are they pagan religious rituals?

  54. Should Christians not make a big deal out of them?

  55. Or should Christians completely refrain from participating in them?

  56. You know, if you go into most of the Thai restaurants in New Haven,

  57. you may notice that in the entryway, there's often a little statue of the Buddha.

  58. And there's often a little food placed right in front of you.

  59. So for some of you, these may be very real issues

  60. that have potential to cause a lot of tension in your family

  61. or among your close friends who follow a different religious tradition.

  62. And the question there is, how do I remain loyal to Christ

  63. without unnecessarily offending people who are close to me?

  64. Where do I draw the line between cultural expressions and religious practices?

  65. How do I show respect to people who I love

  66. without endorsing practices that don't reflect God's will?

  67. So we'll try to address some of those questions over the next few weeks,

  68. especially when we get to chapter 10.

  69. But before we go on, let me just point out

  70. that in every culture there are some biblical teachings

  71. that deeply resonate with our intuitions.

  72. They make total sense to us.

  73. And we say, that's true wisdom.

  74. That's beautiful.

  75. There are other biblical teachings that sound strange and countercultural

  76. and we inherently tend to resist them.

  77. Now from the Bible's perspective, that makes sense

  78. because we're all created in the image of God

  79. and yet we're all deeply flawed and corrupted by sin.

  80. But since every culture and every person is different,

  81. the parts of the Bible that you most struggle with

  82. that seem most implausible to you

  83. may be the parts that are most obviously true

  84. and uncontroversial and make intuitive sense

  85. from someone else's perspective or someone else's culture.

  86. You know, it's helpful to realize this.

  87. Your own doubts and questions are largely determined

  88. by your cultural background

  89. and the historical moment in which you live.

  90. That doesn't mean you should simply dismiss them or ignore them.

  91. But it does mean you shouldn't see them as absolute,

  92. unchangeable objections which every reasonable person would share.

  93. If you're really struggling with any biblical teaching,

  94. it's helpful to ask,

  95. what is it that I'm assuming

  96. that makes it so hard for me

  97. to accept what the Bible says in this particular area?

  98. Well, so food offered to idols is a concern for many Christians today.

  99. Second, the second reason why this is relevant

  100. is Paul's primary concern in this section

  101. is not actually just whether you should eat food offered to idols.

  102. If that was Paul's only concern,

  103. he could have skipped chapter 8, chapter 9,

  104. most of chapter 10 and gone right to chapter 10,

  105. verse 21 and 25 and 27,

  106. where he finally answers that question.

  107. And if you want to know Paul's answer,

  108. should you eat food sacrificed offered to idols,

  109. his answer is this.

  110. Number one, don't participate in religious feasts

  111. which involve idol worship.

  112. That's 1021.

  113. But second, if you're in the marketplace

  114. or you're at somebody's house,

  115. you can eat whatever you want

  116. as long as it's not explicitly associated

  117. with promoting idolatry.

  118. As long as by eating you're not actively promoting it.

  119. Now, we'll get to untangling that in a couple of weeks.

  120. So for Paul, eating food offered to idols,

  121. in the context of pagan religious feasts,

  122. it's not actually simply a matter of opinion

  123. over which Christians may differ.

  124. Sometimes people think that this passage

  125. is talking about the same thing as Romans 14,

  126. which talks about opinions or disputable matters.

  127. There's actually a difference.

  128. Romans 14 does not mention food offered to idols.

  129. It's talking more about flea and unclean foods,

  130. which is sort of a different issue.

  131. And so Paul agrees with Acts 15,

  132. the decree of the Jerusalem Council,

  133. and Revelation 2,

  134. where the Apostle John warns against Christians

  135. eating food offered to idols.

  136. So the New Testament is actually consistent

  137. on this issue,

  138. which is something I didn't always realize.

  139. But that's, I think,

  140. the best way to put things together.

  141. Now, if that's the answer,

  142. why does Paul spend three whole chapters on this topic?

  143. And the reason is Paul's more concerned

  144. with a bunch of bigger issues that are related.

  145. So three of the issues Paul's concerned with

  146. in these chapters are,

  147. one, how should the Christian church

  148. relate to the outside unbelieving world?

  149. Second, how should Christians

  150. with different social backgrounds

  151. and different opinions

  152. relate to one another?

  153. Third, how does your freedom in Christ

  154. relate to your responsibility

  155. to other people in the body of Christ?

  156. So these are three of the issues

  157. that Paul will be dealing with

  158. in these next three chapters.

  159. He doesn't just want to draw the boundaries

  160. and say you can do this,

  161. you can't do that.

  162. He wants to address this at the level

  163. of our motivations and our identity.

  164. Say, who are you?

  165. Who do you belong to?

  166. You know, a lot of Christian answers

  167. to ethical questions only make sense

  168. if you start with, who are you?

  169. Who do you belong to?

  170. You're a human being created in God's image

  171. or someone who's called to belong to Jesus Christ.

  172. A lot of Christian ethical answers

  173. only make sense in the context

  174. of the Christian worldview.

  175. So that's what Paul's doing all along

  176. in 1 Corinthians.

  177. He's addressing all kinds of different issues

  178. by bringing them back to the message

  179. of Christ crucified and risen.

  180. Now before we jump into chapter 8,

  181. take out your bulletin

  182. and look at the insert.

  183. We're about halfway through 1 Corinthians,

  184. so I wanted to do a little bit

  185. of a big picture

  186. where we come from,

  187. where we're going.

  188. And particularly,

  189. I just want to point out

  190. some patterns in 1 Corinthians.

  191. 1 Corinthians is not just sort of

  192. a random assortment of issues

  193. that Paul's dealing with one by one.

  194. There's actually some patterns

  195. in how he addresses each issue

  196. in light of the gospel of Christ.

  197. And particularly,

  198. he begins by warning against

  199. divisions and pride in section 1,

  200. against sexual immorality and greed

  201. in section 2,

  202. which we just finished.

  203. And here against idolatry

  204. and selfishness.

  205. All of those things destroy the church.

  206. But he follows the warnings

  207. with a positive vision

  208. of what it looks like,

  209. practically speaking,

  210. to build up the church

  211. to display the glory of God

  212. in this world.

  213. In chapter 3, verse 16,

  214. Paul said,

  215. you are the temple of God.

  216. God's dwelling place on earth,

  217. the visible display of God's glory

  218. in this broken world.

  219. So he says,

  220. live in such a way

  221. as to build up that temple.

  222. That language of building up

  223. is very,

  224. you'll see a lot

  225. in the next half of 1 Corinthians,

  226. especially 12 through 14.

  227. But building up on another.

  228. The image Paul has in mind

  229. that the church is God's temple,

  230. God's dwelling place

  231. where His presence and glory dwell

  232. in this world.

  233. And Paul says,

  234. build up that temple.

  235. Don't tear it down.

  236. And don't hurt

  237. the parts of the building

  238. that are weak.

  239. Rather,

  240. come alongside them

  241. and strengthen them.

  242. chapter 8 through 10,

  243. there's a pattern.

  244. Same as 12 through 14,

  245. he begins with some general principles,

  246. which we'll look at today.

  247. Chapter 8,

  248. he then seems to digress.

  249. He seems to address

  250. a different topic.

  251. Chapter 9 doesn't mention

  252. food offered titles at all.

  253. And Paul seems to go

  254. a totally different direction,

  255. but actually,

  256. that's the heart of Paul's message.

  257. And then he comes back

  258. to food offered titles,

  259. chapter 10.

  260. It's the same thing,

  261. 12, 13, 14,

  262. with spiritual gifts

  263. and then love.

  264. Right?

  265. That chapter gets read

  266. at weddings all the time.

  267. It's not just about marriage,

  268. it's not primarily about marriage,

  269. it's about love

  270. for your brothers and sisters

  271. in the church.

  272. And why that's the key

  273. to understanding

  274. spiritual gifts.

  275. The key to understanding

  276. spiritual gifts

  277. is understanding

  278. what it means to love

  279. as Christ has loved us.

  280. And the key to understanding

  281. food offered to idols

  282. is understanding

  283. what it means to

  284. be willing to lay down

  285. our rights

  286. and our freedoms

  287. and our privileges

  288. for the good

  289. of others.

  290. Alright,

  291. so that's a little bit

  292. of where we're going.

  293. Let's dive in.

  294. Chapter 8, verse 1.

  295. Now concerning food

  296. offered to idols.

  297. If you look back

  298. at chapter 7, verse 1,

  299. Paul uses the same phrase.

  300. Now concerning the matters

  301. about which you wrote.

  302. So the Corinthians

  303. had written to Paul,

  304. we don't have a copy

  305. of their letter,

  306. but they had written

  307. a letter to Paul,

  308. probably asking his advice

  309. on certain matters.

  310. Most likely,

  311. this was one of them.

  312. In verse 1 and verse 4,

  313. Paul seems to be quoting,

  314. perhaps from their letter,

  315. that they sent him.

  316. Now the ESV puts

  317. those things in quotes.

  318. All of us possess knowledge.

  319. An idol has no real existence.

  320. There is no God but one.

  321. So it seems like,

  322. if you look at the context

  323. of these chapters,

  324. it seems like here's what

  325. the Corinthians wrote to Paul.

  326. Dear Paul,

  327. some members of our church

  328. have become upset

  329. because others have accepted

  330. invitations to dinners

  331. held in idol temples

  332. and freely eat food

  333. that has been offered

  334. to idols.

  335. But all of us possess knowledge

  336. that an idol has no real existence

  337. and that there is no God but one.

  338. So there is no such thing

  339. as idol food,

  340. just food.

  341. But these weak people

  342. are frightened.

  343. They think we are promoting

  344. idolatry.

  345. They question our right

  346. to eat whatever we want.

  347. We are trying to build them up

  348. so they too can enjoy

  349. freedom in Christ

  350. and eat any food.

  351. That's probably something like

  352. what the Corinthians wrote

  353. to Paul.

  354. If you want to understand

  355. how I came up with that,

  356. I'm happy to explain

  357. more later.

  358. But this is,

  359. I think this will make sense

  360. of what we're reading

  361. in chapter 8.

  362. Now, what we'll see here

  363. is Paul doesn't immediately

  364. take sides.

  365. He doesn't immediately say,

  366. I agree with you,

  367. I disagree with you.

  368. He takes a step back

  369. and addresses some

  370. bigger picture issues.

  371. And in this chapter

  372. in particular,

  373. he focuses on knowledge

  374. and love.

  375. He says,

  376. you know, you're saying

  377. you know all these things.

  378. Well, let's talk about knowledge.

  379. And let's also talk about love.

  380. What does it mean

  381. to love one another

  382. in the body of Christ?

  383. So there are three paragraphs.

  384. In chapter 8,

  385. we'll take them in turn.

  386. Paragraph 1,

  387. verse 1 through 3,

  388. how knowledge relates to love.

  389. Paragraph 2,

  390. verse 4 through 6,

  391. what we know as Christians.

  392. And paragraph 3,

  393. how Christians should love.

  394. Verse 7 through 13.

  395. So first,

  396. knowledge and love,

  397. how they relate together.

  398. What Paul does in verse 1 through 3,

  399. is he points out

  400. the dangers of knowledge

  401. and the priority of love.

  402. He says,

  403. this knowledge

  404. puffs up,

  405. but love

  406. builds up.

  407. If anyone imagines

  408. that he knows something,

  409. he does not yet know

  410. as he ought to know.

  411. Now,

  412. we should rip that verse

  413. out of context.

  414. Paul is not against

  415. knowledge.

  416. Paul himself

  417. was very well educated.

  418. Paul also wasn't

  419. a radical skeptic.

  420. he wasn't saying

  421. the only thing

  422. we can ever know

  423. is that we don't

  424. know anything.

  425. What Paul was saying

  426. is that there's

  427. an inherent danger

  428. in accumulating

  429. knowledge.

  430. Particularly when

  431. that knowledge

  432. is limited

  433. or distorted.

  434. And he's concerned

  435. that some of the

  436. Corinthian Christians

  437. were falling

  438. into this trap.

  439. Their knowledge

  440. was puffing them up

  441. with pride

  442. and arrogance.

  443. They were very

  444. confident in their

  445. knowledge,

  446. but they were

  447. using their knowledge

  448. as a weapon

  449. to defend themselves

  450. rather than

  451. as a tool

  452. to build up

  453. the community.

  454. But they perhaps

  455. didn't even realize

  456. that they were

  457. doing this.

  458. I don't think

  459. they were out

  460. to,

  461. I don't think

  462. they were malicious

  463. people

  464. that Paul was

  465. writing to

  466. who were out

  467. to hurt the weak

  468. in their community.

  469. They were simply

  470. very confident

  471. in their knowledge,

  472. blind about

  473. some of their,

  474. the ways that

  475. they were affecting

  476. other people

  477. and not realizing

  478. the harm

  479. they were causing them.

  480. And so Paul's

  481. trying to help them.

  482. And he's trying

  483. to help us

  484. get our priorities

  485. straight.

  486. So he wants to say

  487. true knowledge

  488. of God

  489. and of ourselves

  490. should express itself

  491. in love for God

  492. and love for Naaman.

  493. Jesus said

  494. that's the first

  495. and greatest commandment.

  496. What we read

  497. from Deuteronomy,

  498. to love the Lord

  499. your God

  500. is all your heart

  501. and soul

  502. and mind

  503. and strength.

  504. The second is like it

  505. to love your neighbor

  506. as yourself.

  507. Paul says

  508. knowledge pops up.

  509. It's like a balloon.

  510. You know,

  511. kids are always excited

  512. when they get balloons,

  513. aren't they?

  514. Right?

  515. But the balloon

  516. never lasts

  517. more than a few days.

  518. It deflates.

  519. It shrivels up.

  520. It doesn't last

  521. in a church

  522. that's built

  523. on knowledge

  524. and pride

  525. but lacks

  526. love and humility.

  527. It's like balloon.

  528. It may look

  529. very impressive

  530. for a while

  531. and elevated

  532. and large

  533. but it can fall apart

  534. just as quickly.

  535. But Paul says

  536. love

  537. builds up.

  538. Love creates

  539. something

  540. substantial

  541. and enduring

  542. and solid

  543. that can't be

  544. quickly blown away

  545. by the wind.

  546. When a Christian community

  547. is characterized

  548. by steadfast

  549. enduring

  550. love

  551. it can withstand

  552. all kinds

  553. of external pressures

  554. and stresses

  555. without falling apart.

  556. That's why Proverbs

  557. says love covers

  558. over a multitude

  559. of sins.

  560. Love is

  561. very important.

  562. Now of course

  563. love for God

  564. and love for one another

  565. matures

  566. through growing knowledge.

  567. Philippians 1

  568. Paul prays

  569. it is my prayer

  570. that your love

  571. may abound

  572. in knowledge

  573. and with all discernment

  574. so that you may

  575. prove what is excellent

  576. and be pure

  577. and plainly.

  578. So Paul's not saying

  579. knowledge is unimportant.

  580. He's saying

  581. our knowledge

  582. needs to be rooted

  583. in love

  584. and it needs to be

  585. expressed

  586. in love.

  587. Now verse 3

  588. right

  589. if that's the main

  590. point of the paragraph

  591. we might expect

  592. Paul to say

  593. if anyone

  594. loves God

  595. that person

  596. is the one

  597. who truly knows God

  598. right

  599. because if you

  600. truly know God

  601. then you'll

  602. have love

  603. for God

  604. but interestingly

  605. Paul gives us

  606. a little surprise

  607. he says

  608. if anyone

  609. loves God

  610. he is known

  611. by God.

  612. What Paul

  613. wants to leave us

  614. with in this paragraph

  615. is the most

  616. important kind

  617. of knowledge

  618. is not any

  619. knowledge that you

  620. have

  621. it's that

  622. God

  623. knows

  624. you

  625. and when the

  626. Bible talks

  627. about God

  628. knowing

  629. us

  630. it doesn't

  631. just mean

  632. he knows

  633. about us

  634. just like

  635. he knows

  636. about everything

  637. else in the rest

  638. of the world

  639. and everything

  640. else there is

  641. to know

  642. when the Bible

  643. says God

  644. knows you

  645. that refers to him

  646. choosing us

  647. to be his own

  648. before the foundation

  649. of the world

  650. uniting himself

  651. to us

  652. intimately

  653. in covenant

  654. faithfulness

  655. through Christ

  656. when we're

  657. known by God

  658. it means we're

  659. loved by God

  660. it means

  661. we're

  662. wrapped

  663. in his

  664. embrace

  665. it means

  666. we respond

  667. by knowing

  668. and loving

  669. him in return

  670. it means

  671. we're drawn

  672. in

  673. to the

  674. Father

  675. Son

  676. and Holy

  677. Spirit

  678. in that

  679. community

  680. of love

  681. and knowledge

  682. now before

  683. we go on

  684. to the next

  685. section

  686. the next

  687. paragraph

  688. let me give

  689. a few brief

  690. applications

  691. about the

  692. dangers

  693. of knowledge

  694. and the

  695. priority

  696. of love

  697. first

  698. college

  699. students

  700. and this

  701. applies

  702. to high

  703. school

  704. and middle

  705. school

  706. students

  707. but you

  708. live in

  709. an environment

  710. that's oriented

  711. around increasing

  712. your technical

  713. knowledge

  714. and critical

  715. thinking skills

  716. and those

  717. skills can be

  718. very valuable

  719. and very

  720. worthwhile

  721. but beware

  722. the tendency

  723. of knowledge

  724. to puff

  725. you up

  726. with pride

  727. I mean

  728. it's pretty

  729. easy

  730. if you go

  731. to Yale

  732. it's easy

  733. right

  734. it's pretty

  735. easy

  736. to look

  737. around

  738. and find

  739. somebody

  740. else

  741. that seems

  742. to be

  743. pumped up

  744. with all

  745. their knowledge

  746. but the

  747. false question

  748. is

  749. look at

  750. ourselves

  751. is that

  752. happening

  753. to us

  754. too

  755. and second

  756. we're

  757. supposed to

  758. pursue

  759. love

  760. with as

  761. much

  762. diligence

  763. and energy

  764. as you

  765. pursue

  766. knowledge

  767. and by

  768. love

  769. I don't

  770. mean

  771. romance

  772. necessarily

  773. by love

  774. I mean

  775. things like

  776. learning to

  777. listen

  778. well

  779. learning to

  780. be a good

  781. friend

  782. regardless

  783. of whether

  784. you're a good

  785. networker

  786. learning to

  787. relate to

  788. people who

  789. are very

  790. different than

  791. you

  792. or who

  793. seem to

  794. have nothing

  795. to offer

  796. you

  797. learning to

  798. speak the

  799. truth in

  800. love to

  801. people who

  802. have offended

  803. or wronged

  804. you

  805. learning to

  806. forgive as

  807. God has

  808. forgiven you

  809. this is the

  810. kind of love

  811. that our

  812. world desperately

  813. needs

  814. resolve to

  815. pursue love

  816. and harness

  817. your knowledge

  818. toward the

  819. end of

  820. loving others

  821. more effectively

  822. it takes

  823. time to

  824. develop

  825. that kind

  826. of love

  827. it's not

  828. something that

  829. comes naturally

  830. to us

  831. Paul says

  832. it's a fruit

  833. of the

  834. Holy Spirit

  835. working in

  836. us

  837. so if

  838. your student

  839. resolves

  840. to pursue

  841. love

  842. with as

  843. much

  844. diligence

  845. and energy

  846. as you

  847. are pursuing

  848. knowledge

  849. second

  850. if you're

  851. in divinity

  852. school

  853. or thinking

  854. about going

  855. to seminary

  856. or divinity

  857. school

  858. one of the

  859. major spiritual

  860. dangers of

  861. enrolling

  862. full time

  863. especially in

  864. seminary or

  865. div school

  866. is that your

  867. knowledge about

  868. God and

  869. the Bible and

  870. theology and

  871. church history

  872. is almost

  873. always growing

  874. faster than

  875. your love

  876. for God

  877. and for

  878. your name

  879. and so many

  880. people don't

  881. realize this

  882. but seminary

  883. or div

  884. school can

  885. be as

  886. much of a

  887. spiritual

  888. battlefield

  889. as anywhere

  890. else in the

  891. world

  892. some people

  893. think it will

  894. be a spiritual

  895. paradise

  896. I can just

  897. go and learn

  898. about the

  899. Bible for

  900. two or

  901. three years

  902. it's not

  903. just that

  904. because the

  905. dangers are

  906. more hidden

  907. if you're a

  908. div school

  909. student you

  910. need the

  911. broader body

  912. of Christ

  913. the local

  914. church not

  915. just the

  916. div school

  917. community and

  918. not just the

  919. div school

  920. chapel

  921. because being

  922. part of the

  923. larger body

  924. of Christ

  925. will constantly

  926. challenge you

  927. to love

  928. people who

  929. are different

  930. than you

  931. people who

  932. haven't read

  933. any of the

  934. books you're

  935. reading and

  936. might not

  937. really care

  938. about them

  939. it'll push

  940. you to

  941. consider how

  942. the material

  943. you're learning

  944. actually applies

  945. to people

  946. in their

  947. real daily

  948. lives

  949. it will

  950. humble you

  951. and you

  952. probably need

  953. that

  954. on a regular

  955. basis

  956. okay third

  957. group

  958. I've been in

  959. all these

  960. groups by the

  961. way

  962. okay

  963. third group

  964. if you're

  965. really into

  966. reform theology

  967. okay maybe

  968. you came to

  969. Trinity

  970. because you

  971. found us on

  972. 9 March

  973. and the

  974. gospel coalition

  975. and you

  976. read our

  977. recommended

  978. book list

  979. on the

  980. website

  981. and you

  982. thought this

  983. is the

  984. church for

  985. me

  986. some of you

  987. are like I

  988. don't even

  989. know what

  990. any of those

  991. things are

  992. that's fine

  993. okay there's a

  994. danger of

  995. being pumped up

  996. with reform

  997. theology

  998. just as much

  999. as any other

  1000. kind of

  1001. college

  1002. but think

  1003. about what

  1004. reform theology

  1005. says

  1006. it says this

  1007. it says God

  1008. doesn't owe

  1009. you anything

  1010. because he's

  1011. sovereign over

  1012. everything he

  1013. chose you in

  1014. Christ before

  1015. the world

  1016. began you

  1017. had nothing

  1018. to do with

  1019. that and

  1020. your salvation

  1021. is by grace

  1022. alone not by

  1023. your good

  1024. works not by

  1025. your intellect

  1026. and not because

  1027. you have your

  1028. theology all

  1029. right so if

  1030. you really

  1031. understand that

  1032. the harder

  1033. performed theology

  1034. you'll become

  1035. increasingly humble

  1036. and willing and

  1037. even wanting to

  1038. receive correction

  1039. from others in

  1040. the body of

  1041. Christ whether

  1042. or not they

  1043. understand what

  1044. performed theology

  1045. is or call

  1046. themselves

  1047. performed or

  1048. don't know or

  1049. don't care

  1050. and you will

  1051. become increasingly

  1052. grateful and

  1053. generous and

  1054. joyful and

  1055. reverent that's

  1056. the kind of love

  1057. that understanding

  1058. the biblical gospel

  1059. produces

  1060. and finally the

  1061. knowledge we

  1062. should treasure

  1063. more than

  1064. anything else

  1065. as I said is

  1066. the knowledge

  1067. that God

  1068. knows us

  1069. that he has

  1070. loved us and

  1071. received us

  1072. through Christ

  1073. that he knows

  1074. us better than

  1075. we know ourselves

  1076. and yet he loves

  1077. us through and

  1078. through

  1079. he's called us

  1080. by name

  1081. you know there's

  1082. an amazing promise

  1083. in Revelation 2

  1084. 17

  1085. Jesus says to

  1086. the one who

  1087. overcomes that

  1088. is the one who

  1089. perseveres in

  1090. faith I will

  1091. give you a

  1092. white stone

  1093. with a new

  1094. name written

  1095. on the stone

  1096. that no one

  1097. knows except

  1098. the one who

  1099. receives it

  1100. Jesus knows

  1101. you better than

  1102. you know yourself

  1103. and one day in

  1104. heaven he's going

  1105. to give you a

  1106. new name

  1107. and apparently

  1108. he's just going

  1109. to be he knows

  1110. you so intimately

  1111. and personally

  1112. and individually

  1113. that no one

  1114. will know that

  1115. name except

  1116. him and you

  1117. and maybe you

  1118. can share with

  1119. everybody else

  1120. because I guess

  1121. we'll have a

  1122. complete knowledge

  1123. in heaven I

  1124. don't know how

  1125. that all works

  1126. but the point

  1127. is he knows

  1128. your name

  1129. and he has

  1130. called you by

  1131. name and he

  1132. has a name

  1133. that he's going

  1134. to give you

  1135. because he knows

  1136. you so well

  1137. and sees all

  1138. that he's going

  1139. to do in you

  1140. that's an amazing

  1141. promise

  1142. alright so that's

  1143. the first thing

  1144. priority of love

  1145. and the dangers

  1146. of knowledge

  1147. second thing

  1148. what we should

  1149. know as Christians

  1150. this is verse 4

  1151. through 6

  1152. again Paul's

  1153. not putting

  1154. down knowledge

  1155. that's why he

  1156. talks about it

  1157. in verse 4

  1158. through 6

  1159. Paul goes back

  1160. to some of

  1161. the Corinthian

  1162. slogans

  1163. an idol has

  1164. no real existence

  1165. there's no God

  1166. but one

  1167. this is a reference

  1168. to what we read

  1169. earlier in Deuteronomy

  1170. it's called the

  1171. Shema

  1172. it's the confession

  1173. of faith

  1174. that the Jewish

  1175. people have

  1176. recited for centuries

  1177. the Lord our God

  1178. the Lord is one

  1179. you shall love

  1180. the Lord your God

  1181. with all your heart

  1182. with all your soul

1183. and with all your might

  1184. now some of the

  1185. people in the

  1186. Corinthian church

  1187. were saying

  1188. well idols aren't

  1189. real

  1190. it's only one

  1191. through God

  1192. so we can just

  1193. go into pagan

  1194. temples

  1195. and eat meat

  1196. offered to idols

  1197. it doesn't really

  1198. matter

  1199. idols just aren't

  1200. real

  1201. we just know

  1202. it's all a charade

  1203. they might believe

  1204. it's real

  1205. but as long as

  1206. you know it's

  1207. fake

  1208. then it doesn't

  1209. matter

  1210. well let's

  1211. challenge that

  1212. attitude

  1213. because at one

  1214. level there was

  1215. a self-serving

  1216. attitude

  1217. the primary

  1218. reason people

  1219. would have been

  1220. motivated to go

  1221. into idol temples

  1222. and eat food

  1223. offered to idols

  1224. is because that

  1225. is where a lot

  1226. of the more

  1227. socially prominent

  1228. Corinthians often

  1229. gathered

  1230. for both religious

  1231. rituals as well

  1232. as social occasions

  1233. and so if you

  1234. got an invitation

  1235. to dine at the

  1236. temple of Asclepion

  1237. there was a

  1238. potential social

  1239. cost to refusing

  1240. it

  1241. or to showing

  1242. up and abstaining

  1243. from some of the

  1244. foods that the

  1245. host provided

  1246. and so Paul has

  1247. a challenge

  1248. their attitude

  1249. and sort of their

  1250. desire for social

  1251. advancement at all

  1252. costs

  1253. but Paul does this

  1254. first by saying

  1255. remember what we

  1256. know as Christians

  1257. again Paul's

  1258. stepping back

  1259. he doesn't just

  1260. say yes

  1261. no

  1262. he doesn't just

  1263. get right in their

  1264. face right away

  1265. but he steps back

  1266. and says think

  1267. about knowledge

  1268. and think about

  1269. love and then

  1270. think about what

  1271. we know as

  1272. Christians

  1273. verse 6

  1274. for us there is

  1275. one God the

  1276. Father from whom

  1277. are all things

  1278. and for whom we

  1279. exist and one

  1280. Lord Jesus Christ

  1281. through whom are

  1282. all things and

  1283. through whom we

  1284. live

  1285. now notice what

  1286. Paul points out

  1287. Paul points out

  1288. three things in

  1289. that simple verse

  1290. three things beyond

  1291. there is no God

  1292. beyond a simple

  1293. affirmation of

  1294. monotheistic faith

  1295. so first he points

  1296. out we exist for

  1297. God

  1298. one God for whom

  1299. we exist

  1300. in other words

  1301. you don't exist

  1302. for yourselves

  1303. God is not only

  1304. the origin of

  1305. everything he's

  1306. also the purpose

  1307. and end for which

  1308. we were created

  1309. and as Paul

  1310. will get into

  1311. this later on

  1312. one of the major

  1313. problems is that

  1314. some of the

  1315. Corinthian Christians

  1316. were being selfish

  1317. and self-promoting

  1318. and they were

  1319. acting as if

  1320. God exists

  1321. so that we can

  1322. do what we want

  1323. and Paul says

  1324. oh no

  1325. we exist for God

  1326. that's a fundamental

  1327. truth

1328. from him and for him

  1329. we have to start

  1330. there

  1331. second

  1332. we come to God

  1333. the Father

  1334. through Jesus

  1335. Christ

  1336. it says

  1337. through whom

  1338. are all things

  1339. and through

  1340. who we exist

  1341. now

  1342. that last phrase

  1343. is literally

  1344. it says

  1345. the ESV

  1346. translated

  1347. through who

  1348. we exist

  1349. which is very

  1350. legitimate translation

  1351. but it literally

  1352. just says

  1353. we through him

  1354. it says

  1355. from whom

  1356. are all things

  1357. and we for him

  1358. and then one more

  1359. Jesus Christ

  1360. through whom

  1361. are all things

  1362. and we through him

  1363. so I think

1364. the end of the verse

  1365. is not just saying

  1366. we exist

  1367. because of Jesus Christ

  1368. but it's saying

  1369. that it's through

  1370. Jesus Christ

  1371. that we

  1372. achieve the end

  1373. for which we were

  1374. created

  1375. it's through

  1376. Jesus Christ

  1377. that we realize

  1378. our purpose

  1379. and destiny

  1380. as human beings

  1381. and it's through

  1382. Jesus in particular

  1383. who came

  1384. and died

  1385. on the cross

  1386. that we're

  1387. reconciled to God

  1388. we can know

  1389. God as our Father

  1390. again

  1391. Paul just mentions

  1392. these theological

  1393. truths here

  1394. but these are the

  1395. truths

  1396. that he's going

  1397. to really dig into

  1398. because even later

  1399. in this chapter

  1400. he's going to say

  1401. your brother

  1402. is the one

  1403. for whom

  1404. Christ died

  1405. it is through

  1406. the sacrificial

  1407. death of Christ

  1408. that you

  1409. and your brother

  1410. and your sister

  1411. can come freely

  1412. before God

  1413. so again

  1414. Paul's sort of

  1415. laying the groundwork

  1416. for what he's going

  1417. to dig into

  1418. deeper

  1419. later on

  1420. third thing

  1421. Paul says

  1422. Jesus Christ

  1423. is Lord

  1424. and God

1425. now this is a side note

  1426. but if you take

  1427. a New Testament

  1428. class

  1429. at a secular

  1430. university

  1431. or if you watch

  1432. a PBS special

  1433. on early Christianity

  1434. you may hear

  1435. people say

  1436. the earliest

  1437. followers of Jesus

  1438. did not actually

  1439. worship him

  1440. or proclaim

  1441. his divinity

  1442. this belief

  1443. developed gradually

  1444. and later on

  1445. just like the

  1446. larger than life

  1447. legends

  1448. that develop

  1449. around great

  1450. historical figures

  1451. long after they're

  1452. gone

  1453. the problem

  1454. with that view

  1455. well this verse

  1456. among many other

  1457. things

  1458. creates a problem

  1459. for that view

  1460. because 1 Corinthians

  1461. is one of the

  1462. earliest pieces

  1463. of Christian literature

  1464. that we have

  1465. written only 20 years

  1466. after Jesus' death

  1467. and resurrection

  1468. and when Paul says

  1469. Jesus Christ

  1470. is not only

  1471. the Messiah

  1472. but also

  1473. the one

  1474. Lord

  1475. Paul's identifying

  1476. Jesus with

  1477. the one God

  1478. that Jews

  1479. had worshipped

  1480. for centuries

  1481. it's a strong

  1482. statement

  1483. of the deity

  1484. of Jesus Christ

  1485. and Paul states

  1486. this as if

  1487. everyone knows

  1488. this

  1489. this is one of

  1490. the few statements

  1491. in 1 Corinthians

  1492. that it's not

  1493. at all controversial

  1494. the Corinthians

  1495. got this right

  1496. Jesus Christ

  1497. is God

  1498. they knew it

  1499. Paul agreed

  1500. with them

  1501. he didn't have

  1502. to convince them

  1503. there's all kinds

  1504. of other things

  1505. he was trying

  1506. to convince them

  1507. of

  1508. but this was

  1509. already established

  1510. it's even

  1511. possible

  1512. that Paul

  1513. was quoting

  1514. an early

  1515. Christian

  1516. pre

  1517. an early

  1518. Christian

  1519. summary of the

  1520. faith

  1521. confession of faith

  1522. that was based

  1523. on the Jewish

  1524. confession of faith

  1525. in Deuteronomy

  1526. but expanded

  1527. to explain

  1528. that we not only

  1529. believe in one God

  1530. but we believe

  1531. in the one Lord

  1532. Jesus Christ

  1533. our Savior

  1534. so it's simply

  1535. not the case

  1536. that the deity

  1537. of Jesus Christ

  1538. is a belief

  1539. that appears

  1540. more prominently

  1541. in later

  1542. Christian writings

  1543. it's right there

  1544. from the start

  1545. and it's crystal

  1546. clear

  1547. and for Paul

  1548. and the Corinthians

  1549. that wasn't

  1550. even controversial

  1551. so that's

  1552. what Christians

  1553. should know

  1554. third section

  1555. of how we're

  1556. called to love

  1557. verse 7

  1558. to 13

  1559. now the main

  1560. point of this

  1561. paragraph

  1562. is verse 9

  1563. and the reason

  1564. I can say

  1565. it's the main

  1566. point is because

  1567. it's the only

  1568. command

  1569. in this passage

  1570. and actually

  1571. in the whole

  1572. chapter

  1573. verse 9

  1574. is really the

  1575. message

  1576. the takeaway

  1577. that Paul

  1578. wants us to

  1579. go away with

  1580. take care

  1581. that this

  1582. right of yours

  1583. does not

  1584. somehow become

  1585. a stumbling

  1586. block

  1587. through to

  1588. the week

  1589. for the week

  1590. so in this

  1591. paragraph

  1592. Paul's addressing

  1593. the people

  1594. who claim

  1595. to possess

  1596. knowledge

  1597. and who claim

  1598. that because

  1599. they have this

  1600. knowledge

  1601. we should all

  1602. feel free to

  1603. eat any food

  1604. we want

  1605. anytime we

  1606. want

  1607. and who are

  1608. sort of

  1609. probably

  1610. complaining to

  1611. Paul

  1612. saying these

  1613. weak people

  1614. who still

  1615. think that

  1616. isles are

  1617. real are

  1618. preventing us

  1619. from living

  1620. out our

  1621. freedom in

  1622. Christ

  1623. and Paul

  1624. says wait

  1625. a minute

  1626. he says

  1627. consider how

  1628. the display

  1629. of your

  1630. knowledge

  1631. and Paul

  1632. is using

  1633. knowledge

  1634. a bit

  1635. ironically

  1636. in this

  1637. whole chapter

  1638. but anyway

  1639. he says

  1640. consider how

  1641. the display

  1642. of your

  1643. knowledge

  1644. will affect

  1645. your brothers

  1646. and sisters

  1647. in Christ

  1648. those whom

  1649. you consider

  1650. weak

  1651. verse 8

  1652. he says

  1653. food won't

  1654. commend us

  1655. to God

  1656. well they

  1657. would have

  1658. agreed with

  1659. him

  1660. so yeah

  1661. food doesn't

  1662. matter

  1663. that's not

  1664. how you're

  1665. made right

  1666. with God

  1667. so therefore

  1668. we should be

  1669. able to eat

  1670. anything we

  1671. want

  1672. whatever we

  1673. want

  1674. and Paul

  1675. says

  1676. but we're

  1677. no worse

  1678. off if we

  1679. don't eat

  1680. and no

  1681. better off

  1682. if we

  1683. do

  1684. he actually

  1685. says the

  1686. opposite of

  1687. what they

  1688. want

  1689. they want

  1690. him to

  1691. say

  1692. we're

  1693. no worse

  1694. off if

  1695. we eat

  1696. and no

  1697. better off

  1698. if we

  1699. don't

  1700. Paul says

  1701. if you don't

  1702. eat the

  1703. food

  1704. you'll be

  1705. just fine

  1706. with the

  1707. end

  1708. and if

  1709. you do

  1710. eat

  1711. it doesn't

  1712. get you

  1713. any closer

  1714. to God

  1715. you already

  1716. have everything

  1717. you need

  1718. in Christ

  1719. Christ

  1720. died for

  1721. you to

  1722. bring you

  1723. to God

  1724. so you're

  1725. not only

  1726. free to

  1727. partake

  1728. you're also

  1729. free to

  1730. abstain

  1731. you see

  1732. having

  1733. freedom

  1734. in Christ

  1735. to eat

  1736. all foods

  1737. as long

  1738. as they're

  1739. received

  1740. with

  1741. thanksgiving

  1742. which at

  1743. one level

  1744. Paul doesn't

  1745. agree with

  1746. doesn't mean

  1747. you are

  1748. compelled to

  1749. eat all

  1750. foods to

  1751. prove how

  1752. free you

  1753. are

  1754. Paul doesn't

  1755. want them

  1756. eating food

  1757. in the context

  1758. of a

  1759. pagan

  1760. idolatrous

  1761. feast

  1762. because he

  1763. doesn't want

  1764. them promoting

  1765. idolatry

  1766. we'll look

  1767. up to that

  1768. chapter 10

  1769. jumping ahead

  1770. Paul's saying

  1771. to have

  1772. freedom

  1773. doesn't mean

  1774. you have

  1775. to indulge

  1776. you can

  1777. have freedom

  1778. to drink

  1779. alcohol in

  1780. moderation

  1781. and you

  1782. can choose

  1783. for various

  1784. reasons

  1785. that you

  1786. don't want

  1787. to do

  1788. that

  1789. and you're

  1790. still free

  1791. in Christ

  1792. that's one

  1793. expression of

  1794. freedom in

  1795. Christ

  1796. so in this

  1797. circumstance

  1798. Paul argues

  1799. you need to

  1800. prioritize love

  1801. for your weak

  1802. brothers and

  1803. sisters in

  1804. Christ over

  1805. your own

  1806. rights to

  1807. eat and drink

  1808. whatever you

  1809. want whenever

  1810. you want

  1811. so he says

  1812. take care

  1813. you know

  1814. think about

  1815. what if one of

  1816. your brothers

  1817. or sisters in

  1818. Christ used to

  1819. worship at the

  1820. temple of

  1821. Aphrodite

  1822. and they

  1823. hear that

  1824. you're going

  1825. to the

  1826. festival there

  1827. and you're

  1828. going to

  1829. pick out

  1830. and you're

  1831. just going

  1832. to have a

  1833. great time

  1834. and that's

  1835. where they

  1836. used to

  1837. worship idols

  1838. and commit

  1839. sexual immorality

  1840. do all kinds

  1841. of things that

  1842. they're just

  1843. trying to

  1844. move away

  1845. from

  1846. because they've

  1847. just come to

  1848. faith in

  1849. Christ

  1850. how will that

  1851. affect them

  1852. if you're

  1853. publicly going

  1854. and saying

  1855. hey why

  1856. don't we get

  1857. a roof

  1858. from the

  1859. church

  1860. to go

  1861. along

  1862. Paul says

  1863. their conscience

  1864. will be

  1865. defiled

  1866. that is

  1867. they'll be

  1868. persuaded

  1869. to do

  1870. something

  1871. that they

  1872. are convinced

  1873. is a

  1874. compromise

  1875. of their

  1876. loyalty to

  1877. Jesus

  1878. and Paul

  1879. says that's

  1880. never a

  1881. good pattern

  1882. to be

  1883. urging a

  1884. fellow believer

  1885. to do

  1886. something

  1887. that they

  1888. are convinced

  1889. for biblical

  1890. reasons

  1891. is displeasing

  1892. to God

  1893. now

  1894. there are

  1895. other places

  1896. in scripture

  1897. especially

  1898. Romans 14

  1899. where Paul

  1900. sometimes

  1901. challenges

  1902. some of

  1903. the weak

  1904. people

  1905. right

  1906. who are

  1907. Paul's

  1908. concerned

  1909. some of

  1910. these

  1911. weak

  1912. people

  1913. are

  1914. becoming

  1915. actually

  1916. legalistic

  1917. and sort

  1918. of wanting

  1919. to add

  1920. all these

  1921. rules

  1922. and enforce

  1923. them on

  1924. everybody

  1925. else

  1926. in the

  1927. Christian

  1928. community

  1929. and in

  1930. that case

  1931. Paul says

  1932. no

  1933. you can't

  1934. do that

  1935. you can't

  1936. add rules

  1937. that aren't

  1938. in the

  1939. Bible

  1940. but here

  1941. Paul's

  1942. focus is

  1943. on the

  1944. quote unquote

  1945. strong

  1946. people who

  1947. think hey

  1948. we can do

  1949. whatever we

  1950. want

  1951. Paul challenges

  1952. them here

  1953. verse 11

  1954. Paul has

  1955. some very

  1956. strong words

  1957. by your

  1958. knowledge

  1959. which you

  1960. boast about

  1961. so much

  1962. this weak

  1963. person is

  1964. being

  1965. destroyed

  1966. that is

  1967. not just

  1968. personally

  1969. offended

  1970. but spiritually

  1971. torn apart

  1972. led into

  1973. sin by

  1974. you

  1975. and this

  1976. weak person

  1977. is the

  1978. brother or

  1979. sister for

  1980. whom Christ

  1981. died

  1982. Christ laid

  1983. down his

  1984. life for

  1985. him and

  1986. you're not

  1987. even willing

  1988. to give

  1989. up a meal

  1990. for his

  1991. or her

  1992. good

  1993. verse 12

  1994. Paul says

  1995. you're not

  1996. only sinning

  1997. against your

  1998. brothers or

  1999. sisters you're

  2000. sinning against

  2001. Christ because

  2002. Christ said

  2003. whatever you do

  2004. to the least

  2005. of these my

  2006. brothers and

  2007. sisters you've

  2008. done it to

  2009. me

  2010. and Jesus

  2011. said whoever

  2012. causes one

  2013. of these

  2014. little ones

  2015. who believe

  2016. in me that

  2017. is a

  2018. vulnerable

  2019. believer

  2020. to sin

  2021. it would be

  2022. better for that

  2023. person to have

  2024. a great

  2025. stone

  2026. fastened

  2027. around his

  2028. neck and

  2029. to be drowned

  2030. in the

  2031. depth of the

  2032. sea

  2033. Matthew 18

    Matthew 18:6

  2034. verse 6

  2035. and 7

  2036. so Paul's

  2037. conclusion in

  2038. verse 13

  2039. is if food

  2040. makes my

  2041. brother or

  2042. sister stumble

  2043. I'll never

  2044. eat meat

  2045. again

  2046. hey I'm

  2047. willing to

  2048. give it

  2049. all up

  2050. so I'm

  2051. willing to do

  2052. whatever it

  2053. takes

  2054. to love

  2055. and build

  2056. up my

  2057. brothers and

  2058. sisters in

  2059. Christ

  2060. especially those

  2061. who are

  2062. weak or

  2063. vulnerable in

  2064. some way or

  2065. other

  2066. in the

  2067. Corinthian

  2068. context

  2069. the people

  2070. who are

  2071. strong

  2072. are the

  2073. people who

  2074. are probably

  2075. better off

  2076. economically

  2077. that's why

  2078. they're receiving

  2079. invitations to

  2080. the temples

  2081. anyway

  2082. the poor

  2083. didn't get

  2084. invited to

  2085. those kind

  2086. of feasts

  2087. they were

  2088. people who

  2089. possessed

  2090. knowledge

  2091. perhaps were

  2092. more sophisticated

  2093. more nuanced

  2094. who were

  2095. self confident

  2096. probably too

  2097. self confident

  2098. the weak

  2099. were probably

  2100. people who

  2101. were financially

  2102. poor

  2103. not as well

  2104. educated

  2105. not as

  2106. sophisticated

  2107. maybe new

  2108. converts to

  2109. Christianity

  2110. who had just

  2111. begun following

  2112. Jesus

  2113. and Paul says

  2114. if you're in

  2115. this category

  2116. be careful

  2117. that the

  2118. exercise of

  2119. what you

  2120. feel are

  2121. your rights

  2122. and freedoms

  2123. doesn't actually

  2124. cause this

  2125. group of

  2126. people to

  2127. stumble

  2128. or to

  2129. turn away

  2130. from God

  2131. are we

  2132. willing to

  2133. prioritize

  2134. loving our

  2135. weaker

  2136. brothers and

  2137. sisters in

  2138. Christ even

  2139. if it means

  2140. limiting our

  2141. rights and

  2142. privileges

  2143. this is the

  2144. theme Paul's

  2145. going to go

  2146. into in

  2147. chapter 9

  2148. he's going to

  2149. address it from

  2150. a totally

  2151. different angle

  2152. but it's the

  2153. main point

  2154. so we'll get

  2155. into this

  2156. more in the

  2157. next two

  2158. weeks

  2159. but that's

  2160. the main

  2161. point Paul

  2162. wants to

  2163. leave us

  2164. with

  2165. are we

  2166. willing to

  2167. limit our

  2168. own freedoms

  2169. and rights

  2170. for the sake

  2171. of loving

  2172. our brothers

  2173. and sisters

  2174. and the

  2175. reason he

  2176. wants to

  2177. leave us

  2178. with this

  2179. is of course

  2180. because this

  2181. is what

  2182. Christ has

  2183. done for

  2184. us

  2185. that Christ

  2186. limited his

  2187. freedoms and

  2188. rights

  2189. by coming

  2190. to earth

  2191. by taking

  2192. on the

  2193. limitations

  2194. of human

  2195. nature

  2196. by facing

  2197. temptation

  2198. and resisting

  2199. it to the

  2200. end

  2201. by loving

  2202. his disciples

  2203. by laying

  2204. down his

  2205. life on the

  2206. cross

  2207. this is what

  2208. Christ has

  2209. done for

  2210. us

  2211. this is why

  2212. we're brothers

  2213. and sisters

  2214. in Christ

  2215. this is why

  2216. we can come

  2217. to the table

  2218. and share

  2219. in the Lord's

  2220. supper together

  2221. because while

  2222. we were still

  2223. weak

  2224. Christ died

  2225. for the

  2226. ungodly

  2227. while we

  2228. were still

  2229. sinners

  2230. Christ died

  2231. for us

  2232. Paul says

  2233. now we're

  2234. all part of

  2235. the body

  2236. of Christ

  2237. and later

  2238. on in

  2239. chapter 12

  2240. he says

  2241. those parts

  2242. of the body

  2243. that seem

  2244. to be

  2245. weaker

  2246. are actually

  2247. indispensable

  2248. so if you're

  2249. hurting your

  2250. brothers or

  2251. sisters or

  2252. ignoring your

  2253. brothers or

  2254. sisters who

  2255. are poor

  2256. or who are

  2257. maybe more

  2258. easily offended

  2259. perhaps more

  2260. difficult to

  2261. deal with

  2262. even

  2263. if you're

  2264. brushing them

  2265. to the side

  2266. you're hurting

  2267. them by the

  2268. way you

  2269. express your

  2270. knowledge

  2271. Paul says

  2272. you're hurting

  2273. a member of

  2274. Christ's own

  2275. body who is

  2276. indispensable

  2277. so we're

  2278. going to come

  2279. to the Lord's

  2280. table this

  2281. morning

  2282. celebrate the

  2283. unity that

  2284. we have in

  2285. Christ

  2286. sacrifice

  2287. Christ made

  2288. for us

  2289. let me read

  2290. chapter 10

  2291. verse 16

  2292. and 17

  2293. Paul says

  2294. the cup of

  2295. blessing that

  2296. we bless

  2297. is it not a

  2298. participation in

  2299. the blood of

  2300. Christ

  2301. and the bread

  2302. that we break

  2303. is it not a

  2304. participation in

  2305. the body of

  2306. Christ

  2307. Christ

  2308. because there's

  2309. one bread we

  2310. who are many

  2311. are one body

  2312. for we all

  2313. partake of

  2314. one bread

  2315. so as we

  2316. come to the

  2317. Lord's supper

  2318. there's two

  2319. things I want

  2320. to remind us

  2321. of

  2322. as we take

  2323. the cup

  2324. remember

  2325. Christ's blood

  2326. that was shed

  2327. for us

  2328. we confess that

  2329. the blood of

  2330. Christ that was

  2331. shed on the

  2332. cross cleanses

  2333. us from all

  2334. sin

  2335. and this

  2336. blood

  2337. the cup is a

  2338. sign and a

  2339. seal of God's

  2340. new covenant

  2341. promise in

  2342. Jesus Christ

  2343. if you have

  2344. confessed your

  2345. sin

  2346. turned to Jesus

  2347. as your Savior

  2348. and Lord

  2349. that you are

  2350. clean

  2351. you are forgiven

  2352. you are set

  2353. apart

  2354. to belong to

  2355. God

  2356. you've been

  2357. born again

  2358. right

  2359. cry out with

  2360. love and joy

  2361. the blood of

  2362. Christ

  2363. cleanses us

  2364. from sin

  2365. Paul also

  2366. says we

  2367. are made in

  2368. the body of

  2369. Christ

  2370. represented by

  2371. the bread

  2372. and in this

  2373. context what

  2374. Paul means is

  2375. that when you

  2376. take this bread

  2377. remember that

  2378. you are united

  2379. with every other

  2380. person in this

  2381. room and every

  2382. other Christian

  2383. throughout the

  2384. world who

  2385. takes this bread

  2386. by faith in

  2387. Jesus Christ

  2388. and who drinks

  2389. this cup

  2390. so as we come

  2391. to the Lord's

  2392. table

  2393. there's two

  2394. things that it

  2395. calls us to do

  2396. one is to

  2397. remember that

  2398. we are cleansed

  2399. and forgiven

  2400. by the blood

  2401. of Christ

  2402. and so if

  2403. there is a

  2404. sin that God

  2405. has brought to

  2406. mind that you

  2407. realize you need

  2408. to confess to

  2409. the Lord in

  2410. your life

  2411. there's a way

  2412. you've been

  2413. living that

  2414. isn't pleasing

  2415. to God

  2416. confess that to

  2417. the Lord

  2418. ask his forgiveness

  2419. as the elements

  2420. are being passed

  2421. out and then

  2422. take the cup

  2423. remembering Christ

  2424. shed his blood

  2425. for you

  2426. and as the bread

  2427. is being passed

  2428. out think about

  2429. one another

  2430. is there anyone

  2431. in this church

  2432. or any other

  2433. Christian

  2434. with whom you

  2435. are not

  2436. reconciled

  2437. because when you

  2438. eat this bread

  2439. what you're saying

  2440. is we are

  2441. reconciled to

  2442. each other

  2443. through Christ

  2444. so if you need

  2445. to repent

  2446. if you need

  2447. to forgive

  2448. someone else

  2449. if you need

  2450. to lovingly

  2451. confront someone

  2452. else

  2453. if you need

  2454. to listen

  2455. to someone

  2456. else

  2457. let this

  2458. spur you

  2459. on to do

  2460. that

  2461. without any

  2462. delay

  2463. with those

  2464. who are coming

  2465. to serve

  2466. communion this

  2467. morning

  2468. up to the front

  2469. Paul writes

  2470. for I received

  2471. from the Lord

  2472. what I also

  2473. deliver to you

  2474. that the Lord

  2475. Jesus on the

  2476. night when he

  2477. was betrayed

  2478. took bread

  2479. and when he

  2480. had given

  2481. thanks he

  2482. broke it

  2483. and said

  2484. this is my

  2485. body which

  2486. is for you

  2487. do this

  2488. in remembrance

  2489. of me

  2490. in the same

  2491. way also

  2492. he took the

  2493. cup after

  2494. supper

  2495. saying this

  2496. cup is the

  2497. new covenant

  2498. in my blood

  2499. do this

  2500. as often

  2501. as you

  2502. drink it

  2503. in remembrance

  2504. of me

  2505. Tyler would you

  2506. give thanks

  2507. for the bread

  2508. of me

  2509. I have

  2510. that

  2511. I have

  2512. that

  2513. I have

  2514. that

  2515. went

  2516. back

  2517. to the

  2518. end

  2519. in remembrance

  2520. of me

  2521. achieve

  2522. that

  2523. I am

  2524. not

  2525. by

  2526. in remembrance

  2527. of me

  2528. as fala

  2529. of me

  2530. Moham

  2531. name

  2532. the

  2533. female

  2534. May

  2535. but

  2536. the

  2537. other
