  1. Good evening, church.

  2. First of all, happy Mother's Day to all our moms here tonight.

  3. I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day so far.

  4. Preparing a sermon for a total rookie preacher like me can be a daunting task.

  5. But this week, I am so grateful to God because He has given me so much grace.

  6. First of all, I just stumbled upon this wonderful book by Paul Miller.

  7. And the book is called Love Walked Among Us.

  8. And I found a lot of resources in this book, just purely by accident.

  9. I picked up this book and I just found a lot of resources that, you know, helped me prepare for tonight's sermon.

  10. And secondly, you know, I am grateful to our pastors because they've been very supportive and also very encouraging.

  11. So, you know, for somebody who just preached like two, three times in his whole life, it can be a very nerve-wracking task.

  12. But with a lot of support and a lot of encouragement from our pastors, you know, the task can be also a lot less daunting.

  13. So, I thank my pastors.

  14. And, you know, as we were called to encourage one another, I also, you know, gently urge all of us to, as we encourage one another, don't forget to encourage our pastors.

  15. Last Sunday, Pastor Greg taught us about how Jesus met oppositions.

  16. As he cast out demons, there were people saying, oh, he must be the prince of demons.

  17. And they were demanding, you know, heavenly signs.

  18. And Jesus said, there is no sign for you except the sign of Jonah.

  19. Somebody greater than Jonah is here, but, and yet, you guys still refuse to believe.

  20. And tonight, we continue.

  21. So, Jesus, after, you know, telling the group, the people that there is no sign other than Jonah,

  22. he resumes his teaching by talking about the parable of light.

  23. Now, the interesting thing about this parable is just a couple of chapters before, in Luke chapter 8,

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  24. he told them the exact same parable about the light.

  25. And this parable is also found in Mark chapter 5, and also found in Matthew chapter 5, verses 14 and 16.

Mark 5 chapter mention Matthew 5:14

  26. So, this parable must be important and significant for Jesus to repeat all over again.

  27. So, tonight's passage, we'll look at from Luke chapter 11, verses 33, all the way to chapter 12, verses 1 to 3.

    Luke 11:33

  28. But I'd like to look at the first three verses, and also the last three verses first.

  29. Because I believe it's a continuous teaching of Jesus about the parable of light.

  30. But in the middle, he is interrupted by Pharisees, because one of the Pharisees invite him to a meal.

  31. So, let's turn to Luke chapter 11.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  32. It's found on page 870 in your pew Bible.

  33. We'll read chapter 11, verses 33 to 36, and then we'll skip to chapter 12, verses 2 and 3.

  34. No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand,

  35. so that those who enter may see the light.

  36. Therefore, your eye is the lamp of your body.

  37. When your body is healthy, your whole, I'm sorry, when your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light.

  38. But when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.

  39. Therefore, be careful, lest the light in you be darkness.

  40. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright.

  41. As when a lamp with its rays gives you light.

  42. Now, we're going to chapter 12, verses 2 and 3.

  43. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed or hidden that will not be known.

  44. Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light.

  45. And whatever you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

  46. Now, just quickly go back a few chapters to Luke chapter 8, verses 16 and 17.

    Luke 8:16

  47. It's on page 8, 865.

  48. Chapter 8, verses 16 and 17.

  49. No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed,

  50. but puts it on a stand so that those who enter may see the light.

  51. For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.

  52. So, I mean, this sounds like a very, you know, pretty common sense, right?

  53. Who puts the lamp under a basket or hides the light?

  54. The whole purpose of light is to illumine in the room.

  55. But why is Jesus...

  56. Talks about this parable over and over, and all three Gospels record this parable.

  57. What is the significance and what is the importance about this parable?

  58. So, what is this light that Jesus is talking about?

  59. Or could it be who is Jesus talking about when he talks about this light?

  60. Now, in John chapter 3, Jesus, you know, Jesus told us,

    John 3 chapter mention

  61. the light has come into the world.

  62. But people did not like the light.

  63. Because when the light came, the things that were done in darkness,

  64. all their evil deeds, their sinful nature was revealed.

  65. So, what Jesus is telling us here is,

  66. when you receive me, when you have Jesus in you,

  67. when you have the Gospel, when you have Jesus' mission in you,

  68. now you bear the light.

  69. In Matthew chapter 5, the same parable,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  70. Jesus tells us, you are the city on the hill.

  71. Cannot be hidden.

  72. So, I will just read from John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  73. You don't have to go there.

  74. The light has come into the world,

  75. and people love the darkness rather than the light,

  76. because their works were evil.

  77. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light,

  78. and does not come to the light,

  79. lest his works should be exposed.

  80. But whoever does what is true comes to the light,

  81. so that he may be clearly seen

  82. that his works have been carried out in God.

  83. So, in this first three verses of tonight's passage,

  84. Jesus tells us,

  85. you are the light.

  86. If you receive me,

  87. and do what I tell you to do,

  88. you are like the light

  89. that's supposed to be standing on a lampstand.

  90. Not be hidden, not be covered,

  91. but to make the room bright,

  92. chasing away all the darkness.

  93. And in chapter 12, verse 2,

  94. you know, verse 8,

  95. it was in,

  96. it was one, you know,

  97. he talks about the lamp,

  98. and then he says,

  99. nothing will be hidden.

  100. In this chapter,

  101. it was broken up

  102. in chapter 11 and chapter 12,

  103. like I said,

  104. because before he even finished

  105. telling the disciples

  106. what he said in verse 2 and 3,

  107. he was invited to have a meal

  108. with the Pharisee.

  109. So,

  110. Jesus is keep telling his disciples and us,

  111. you guys are the light,

  112. and you guys are supposed to

  113. shine the light

  114. by,

  115. you know,

  116. obeying my words

  117. and do

  118. what I tell you to do.

  119. And then we will explore

  120. more of that

  121. when we come back

  122. after we

  123. study the next section.

  124. So now,

  125. let's look at

  126. Luke chapter 11,

    Luke 11:37–53

  127. verses 37

  128. to

  129. 53.

  130. So as Jesus is

  131. having a meal

  132. at this Pharisee's house,

  133. he also exposes

  134. their hypocrisy.

  135. The same

  136. account,

  137. the more detailed

  138. and more expanded account

  139. of this,

  140. this parallel

  141. account,

  142. my kids are laughing right now,

  143. because

  144. every time I say

  145. the word parallel,

  146. they think

  147. I don't pronounce it correctly.

  148. So,

  149. sometimes,

  150. you know,

  151. they'll sit me down

  152. and say,

  153. Dad,

  154. this is how you say

  155. the word parallel,

  156. parallel.

  157. So,

  158. every time I use

  159. the word parallel,

  160. they are laughing.

  161. They're picking on

  162. their poor immigrant dad.

  163. So,

  164. the same

  165. account

  166. is also found

  167. in Matthew

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  168. chapter 23.

  169. We're not going to go there.

  170. If you want to look at it later,

  171. it is much

  172. more detailed

  173. account of

  174. what Pharisees

  175. and the lawyers.

  176. So,

  177. basically,

  178. the Pharisees,

  179. if you're not familiar

  180. with the term,

  181. these were the religious leaders

  182. at the time.

  183. They were the Bible teachers

  184. and the lawyers

  185. because it was

  186. during the theocratic society.

  187. The lawyers,

  188. pretty much,

  189. they're the religious law experts.

  190. So,

  191. Pharisees and the religious law experts,

  192. they are watching

  193. what Jesus is doing

  194. and they are just basically

  195. kind of trying to see

  196. what he says

  197. to,

  198. you know,

  199. trap him.

  200. verse 37.

  201. While Jesus was speaking,

  202. a Pharisee asked him

  203. to dine with him.

  204. So,

  205. he went in

  206. and reclined

  207. at the table.

  208. The Pharisee was

  209. astonished

  210. to see that

  211. he did not first

  212. wash

  213. before

  214. dinner.

  215. So,

  216. they must have said,

  217. you know,

  218. to themselves,

  219. look at him.

  220. He doesn't even wash.

  221. What kind of teacher

  222. is he?

  223. So,

  224. Jesus knew

  225. what they were thinking.

  226. Verse 38.

  227. And the Lord said to him,

  228. now you Pharisees

  229. cleanse the outside

  230. of the cup

  231. and of the dish,

  232. but inside

  233. you are full

  234. of greed

  235. and wickedness.

  236. So,

  237. these so-called

  238. religious leaders,

  239. experts in Bible,

  240. they were so focused

  241. on how they appear

  242. in public.

  243. In other parts

  244. of the gospel,

  245. you know,

  246. they make these

  247. long prayers.

  248. They would like

  249. to pray in public.

  250. They want people

  251. to see how they pray,

  252. what they pray.

  253. There was one

  254. incident where,

  255. you know,

  256. this Pharisee

  257. is just praying

  258. to God

  259. and he sees

  260. a tax collector

  261. who couldn't even

  262. raise his head

  263. and yet he says,

  264. thank God,

  265. you know,

  266. I am not

  267. like this tax collector.

  268. I fast,

  269. I do this,

  270. I do that,

  271. thank God,

  272. I am not like him.

  273. So,

  274. the Pharisees

  275. were so,

  276. so,

  277. it's almost like

  278. they're just

  279. image driven.

  280. as long as

  281. they appear

  282. holy and,

  283. you know,

  284. righteous

  285. in front of the people

  286. and yet,

  287. inside,

  288. Jesus said,

  289. you guys are just

  290. full of

  291. wickedness

  292. and greed.

  293. Verse 30,

  294. verse 39,

  295. and the Lord,

  296. I'm sorry,

  297. verse 40,

  298. you fools,

  299. did not him

  300. who made the outside

  301. make the inside also,

  302. but give as elms

  303. those things

  304. that are within

  305. and behold,

  306. everything is

  307. clean for you.

  308. But woe to you,

  309. Pharisees,

  310. for you tithe

  311. mint

  312. and rue

  313. and every herb

  314. and neglect justice

  315. and the love of God.

  316. These you ought

  317. to have done

  318. without neglecting

  319. the others.

  320. So,

  321. even giving offering

  322. or tithe,

  323. giving one tenth,

  324. they are so careful

  325. whatever they grow

  326. in their garden,

  327. whether it's a mint,

  328. any kind of herb,

  329. they are so careful

  330. to even give

  331. ten percent

  332. of that.

  333. And I sometimes

  334. wonder whether

  335. they did that

  336. so they can say,

  337. oh,

  338. look at so and so.

  339. they consume

  340. all their vegetables,

  341. their gluttons.

  342. Look at me.

  343. I give tenth

  344. of everything

  345. including

  346. all the things

  347. that I grow

  348. in the garden.

  349. I wonder if they missed

  350. the real,

  351. what God really wants

  352. from us is

  353. heart of David.

  354. King David said,

  355. everything came

  356. from you,

  357. from what we have

  358. received from your hand,

  359. we give back.

  360. So,

  361. it's almost like

  362. returning

  363. a portion.

  364. Do we really

  365. give something

  366. to God

  367. or are we just

  368. simply returning

  369. some portion

  370. of it

  371. that we

  372. receive from God?

  373. Apostle Paul says,

  374. God loves

  375. cheerful giver.

  376. So,

  377. these Pharisees,

  378. sometimes I wonder

  379. whether they

  380. did this

  381. so methodically

  382. to look good,

  383. to appear,

  384. I am so holy.

  385. Everything

  386. that I grow,

  387. even the little

  388. herbs,

  389. I give tenth

  390. back,

  391. you know,

  392. as a tide.

  393. And Jesus

  394. says,

  395. but you guys

  396. neglect

  397. looking after

  398. the poor.

  399. giving to the poor.

  400. You guys

  401. do all these

  402. things,

  403. but you

  404. neglect justice

  405. and you

  406. neglect to

  407. look after

  408. the poor.

  409. Verse 43,

  410. woe to you

  411. Pharisees,

  412. for you love

  413. the best seat

  414. in the synagogues

  415. and greetings

  416. in the marketplaces.

  417. Again,

  418. they like

  419. to be

  420. revered,

  421. I'm sure

  422. they were.

  423. because people

  424. probably looked

  425. up to them

  426. because they

  427. were,

  428. you know,

  429. religious leaders

  430. and because

  431. they constantly

  432. kept up this

  433. image of being

  434. holy and

  435. righteous.

  436. I'm sure a lot

  437. of people,

  438. they looked up

  439. to them.

  440. But Jesus

  441. said,

  442. you guys

  443. are looking

  444. for greetings

  445. in a marketplace.

  446. Probably,

  447. you know,

  448. they enjoy being

  449. called rabbi,

  450. teacher.

  451. when people

  452. called them

  453. rabbi,

  454. when people

  455. greeted them,

  456. when they

  457. were sitting

  458. at the best

  459. seat in the

  460. synagogue,

  461. they were

  462. probably just

  463. gloating.

  464. But,

  465. is that,

  466. is that the

  467. attitude

  468. Jesus had?

  469. Did Jesus

  470. come

  471. to be

  472. respected,

  473. honored,

  474. seated at the

  475. best seat in

  476. the synagogue?

  477. Basically,

  478. did he come

  479. here to be

  480. served?

  481. served.

  482. It was

  483. totally

  484. opposite.

  485. Jesus

  486. came to

  487. serve,

  488. instead of

  489. being served.

  490. But the

  491. Pharisees

  492. here,

  493. it sounds

  494. like,

  495. they just

  496. want to be

  497. served,

  498. instead of

  499. serving.

  500. They want

  501. to be greeted

  502. at a marketplace,

  503. be called

  504. teachers,

  505. rabbis.

  506. verse 44,

  507. woe to

  508. you,

  509. for you

  510. are like

  511. unmarked

  512. graves,

  513. and people

  514. walk over

  515. them without

  516. knowing it.

  517. In the

  518. Old Testament,

  519. if you

  520. come in

  521. contact with

  522. the dead

  523. body or

  524. grave,

  525. you are

  526. considered

  527. unclean

  528. for seven

  529. days.

  530. So,

  531. people are

  532. very careful

  533. not to

  534. touch the

  535. dead body

  536. or touch

  537. the grave.

  538. But what

  539. Jesus is

  540. saying is,

  541. you guys

  542. are like

  543. unmarked

  544. graves.

  545. People

  546. may

  547. associate

  548. with you

  549. not knowing

  550. what's inside

  551. of you.

  552. You may

  553. appear holy

  554. and righteous

  555. on the

  556. outside,

  557. but inside,

  558. because you

  559. are full

  560. of greed

  561. and arrogance

  562. and wickedness,

  563. it's almost

  564. like you

  565. caused them

  566. to sin.

  567. If the

  568. graves were

  569. marked,

  570. people would

  571. not have

  572. touched

  573. it.

  574. But because

  575. Pharisees were

  576. like unmarked

  577. graves,

  578. people stumble

  579. upon them.

  580. And verse

  581. 40,

  582. 45,

  583. now one of

  584. the lawyers

  585. answered him,

  586. teacher,

  587. in saying

  588. these things,

  589. you insult

  590. us also.

  591. And he

  592. said,

  593. woe to

  594. your lawyers

  595. also,

  596. for you

  597. load

  598. people

  599. with

  600. burdens

  601. hard to

  602. bear,

  603. and you

  604. yourselves

  605. do not

  606. touch the

  607. burdens

  608. with one

  609. of your

  610. fingers.

  611. Woe to

  612. you,

  613. for you

  614. build the

  615. tombs of

  616. the prophets

  617. whom your

  618. fathers killed.

  619. So you

  620. are witnesses

  621. and you

  622. consent to

  623. the deeds

  624. of your

  625. fathers,

  626. for they

  627. killed them

  628. and you

  629. build their

  630. tombs.

  631. so now

  632. the religious

  633. law experts

  634. are offended.

  635. So they

  636. say,

  637. Jesus,

  638. why are you

  639. offending

  640. us?

  641. And Jesus

  642. said,

  643. because you

  644. guys make

  645. these incredible

  646. demands.

  647. You have to

  648. do this,

  649. this,

  650. this,

  651. this.

  652. You make

  653. these demands

  654. on people

  655. and you

  656. don't even

  657. lift your

  658. finger to

  659. help them.

  660. And then

  661. he also

  662. talks about

  663. your

  664. forefathers

  665. have killed

  666. all these

  667. prophets.

  668. And then

  669. you build

  670. the tomb,

  671. the monuments,

  672. so you're

  673. basically

  674. consenting to

  675. it.

  676. So in

  677. Matthew

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  678. chapter 23,

  679. these lawyers

  680. tell Jesus,

  681. well,

  682. the lawyers

  683. have this

  684. thing,

  685. they say,

  686. well,

  687. if we

  688. lived in

  689. our

  690. ancestors'

  691. time,

  692. we would

  693. have never

  694. done that.

  695. They say,

  696. if we

  697. lived during

  698. our ancestors'

  699. time,

  700. we would

  701. have never

  702. killed those

  703. prophets.

  704. So again,

  705. they have

  706. this self-righteous

  707. attitude.

  708. And Jesus

  709. keeps pointing

  710. these out.

  711. Verse

  712. 52.

  713. I'm

  714. sorry,

  715. verse 49.

  716. Therefore,

  717. also the

  718. wisdom of

  719. God said,

  720. I will

  721. send them

  722. prophets and

  723. apostles,

  724. some of

  725. whom they

  726. will kill

  727. and persecute,

  728. so that the

  729. blood of all

  730. the prophets

  731. shed from

  732. the foundation

  733. of the world

  734. may be

  735. charged against

  736. this generation.

  737. from the

  738. blood of

  739. Abel to

  740. the blood

  741. of Zechariah,

  742. who perished

  743. between the

  744. altar and

  745. the sanctuary.

  746. Yes,

  747. I tell you,

  748. it will be

  749. required of

  750. this generation.

  751. So

  752. throughout

  753. the Old

  754. Testament,

  755. you'll see

  756. how when

  757. prophets

  758. come,

  759. so prophets

  760. are like

  761. the light.

  762. they come

  763. and they

  764. tell the

  765. nation,

  766. you guys

  767. are doing

  768. wrong.

  769. You guys

  770. are worshipping

  771. idols,

  772. you need to

  773. turn from

  774. worshipping

  775. idols,

  776. you need to

  777. turn to

  778. God.

  779. So

  780. they are

  781. lights

  782. pointing

  783. people to

  784. God,

  785. but so

  786. many of

  787. the prophets,

  788. they were

  789. killed.

  790. So many

  791. kings,

  792. when you

  793. read the

  794. kings and

  795. the

  796. chronicles,

  797. when they

  798. don't like

  799. what they

  800. hear,

  801. they will

  802. put prophets

  803. in prison

  804. or kill

  805. them altogether.

  806. So

  807. Jesus is

  808. saying,

  809. you

  810. ancestors

  811. and you

  812. guys are

  813. guilty of

  814. this.

  815. And

  816. isn't that

  817. true,

  818. how they

  819. continue to

  820. do that?

  821. And

  822. eventually

  823. they kill

  824. Jesus.

  825. Verse 52,

  826. woe to

  827. you lawyers

  828. for you

  829. have taken

  830. away the

  831. key knowledge,

  832. key of

  833. knowledge.

  834. You did

  835. not enter

  836. yourselves

  837. and you

  838. hindered

  839. those who

  840. are,

  841. who were

  842. entering.

  843. I believe

  844. the key

  845. knowledge

  846. that they

  847. were sort

  848. of putting

  849. behind while

  850. they were

  851. loading people

  852. with these

  853. burdensome

  854. rituals and

  855. the laws

  856. they demand.

  857. The key

  858. knowledge,

  859. I believe,

  860. is love

  861. the Lord

  862. your God

  863. with all

  864. your heart,

  865. with all

  866. your soul,

  867. with all

  868. your might,

  869. and love

  870. your neighbor.

  871. Instead of

  872. pointing the

  873. people to

  874. God and

  875. his kingdom,

  876. these law

  877. experts

  878. would just

  879. keep laying

  880. down these

  881. rules and

  882. laws.

  883. So they,

  884. instead of

  885. focusing on

  886. what's really

  887. important and

  888. crucial,

  889. they are

  890. just focusing

  891. on these

  892. other things.

  893. so in

  894. chapter 10

  895. verses 12

  896. to 20,

  897. this is what

  898. God told

  899. his people.

  900. And now

  901. Israel,

  902. what does

  903. the Lord

  904. your God

  905. require of

  906. you?

  907. God,

  908. but to

  909. fear the

  910. Lord

  911. your God,

  912. to walk

  913. in all

  914. his ways,

  915. to love

  916. him,

  917. to serve

  918. the Lord

  919. your God

  920. with all

  921. your heart

  922. and with

  923. all your

  924. soul,

  925. and to

  926. keep the

  927. commandments

  928. and statutes

  929. of the

  930. Lord,

  931. which I

  932. am commanding

  933. you today

  934. for your

  935. good.

  936. Behold,

  937. to the

  938. Lord your

  939. God belong

  940. heaven and

  941. the heaven

  942. of heavens,

  943. and the earth

  944. with all that

  945. is in it.

  946. Yet the

  947. Lord set

  948. his heart

  949. in love

  950. on your

  951. fathers and

  952. chose their

  953. offspring after

  954. them.

  955. You above

  956. all peoples,

  957. as you are

  958. this day,

  959. circumcise

  960. therefore the

  961. foreskin of

  962. your heart

  963. and be no

  964. longer stubborn.

  965. For the

  966. Lord your

  967. God is

  968. God of

  969. gods and

  970. Lord of

  971. lords,

  972. the great,

  973. the mighty,

  974. and the

  975. awesome God,

  976. who is not

  977. partial and

  978. takes no

  979. bribe.

  980. He

  981. executes

  982. justice for

  983. the fatherless

  984. and the

  985. widow and

  986. loves the

  987. sojourner,

  988. giving him

  989. food and

  990. clothing.

  991. Love the

  992. sojourner,

  993. therefore,

  994. for you are

  995. sojourners in

  996. the land of

  997. Egypt.

  998. You shall

  999. fear the

  1000. Lord your

  1001. God,

  1002. you shall

  1003. serve him

  1004. and hold

  1005. fast to

  1006. him,

  1007. and by

  1008. his name

  1009. you shall

  1010. swear.

  1011. So God

  1012. told his

  1013. people to

  1014. love me,

  1015. and then

  1016. have

  1017. compassion

  1018. on

  1019. fatherless,

  1020. the widow,

  1021. the sojourners,

  1022. basically people

  1023. who can be

  1024. marginalized in

  1025. society.

  1026. And yet,

  1027. the scribes,

  1028. the lawyers,

  1029. and the

  1030. Pharisees,

  1031. it sounds

  1032. like they

  1033. completely

  1034. ignored this,

  1035. and they

  1036. were so

  1037. busy

  1038. putting

  1039. themselves

  1040. in public,

  1041. having the

  1042. form of

  1043. holiness,

  1044. but inside,

  1045. it was all

  1046. just their

  1047. greed,

  1048. wickedness,

  1049. neglecting the

  1050. poor.

  1051. In other

  1052. parts of the

  1053. gospel,

  1054. Jesus rebukes

  1055. lawyers,

  1056. because they

  1057. were swallowing

  1058. up,

  1059. probably,

  1060. with those

  1061. properties,

  1062. using their

  1063. technicality to

  1064. take up

  1065. with those

  1066. properties.

  1067. So,

  1068. what can

  1069. we learn

  1070. from,

  1071. you know,

  1072. all this

  1073. exposed

  1074. hypocrisy

  1075. of Pharisees

  1076. and lawyers?

  1077. are we

  1078. to just

  1079. say,

  1080. oh,

  1081. you know,

  1082. those are

  1083. terrible

  1084. people,

  1085. they're a

  1086. bunch of

  1087. hypocrites?

  1088. I think

  1089. we,

  1090. we need

  1091. to also,

  1092. you know,

  1093. examine

  1094. ourselves,

  1095. reflect upon

  1096. this.

  1097. The book

  1098. that I just

  1099. mentioned,

  1100. Love Walked

  1101. Among Us,

  1102. he mentions

  1103. three interesting

  1104. things.

  1105. He says,

  1106. judging,

  1107. blocks

  1108. compassion.

  1109. Judging

  1110. blocks

  1111. compassion.

  1112. Self-righteousness

  1113. blocks

  1114. compassion.

  1115. Legalism

  1116. blocks

  1117. compassion.

  1118. And I

  1119. would like

  1120. to just

  1121. share

  1122. a couple

  1123. of points

  1124. from that

  1125. book.

  1126. Paul

  1127. Miller

  1128. says,

  1129. we are

  1130. remarkably

  1131. perceptive

  1132. of

  1133. others'

  1134. shortcomings

  1135. and sins,

  1136. but curiously

  1137. blind

  1138. to our

  1139. own.

  1140. We are

  1141. remarkably

  1142. perceptive

  1143. of others'

  1144. shortcomings

  1145. and sins,

  1146. but curiously

  1147. blind

  1148. to our

  1149. own.

  1150. people.

  1151. We'll

  1152. often notice

  1153. things wrong

  1154. with people,

  1155. but does

  1156. that initial

  1157. look lead

  1158. to compassion

  1159. and helping

  1160. or to

  1161. judging

  1162. and

  1163. distance?

  1164. We'll

  1165. often notice

  1166. things wrong

  1167. with people,

  1168. but does

  1169. that initial

  1170. look lead

  1171. to compassion

  1172. and helping

  1173. or to

  1174. judging

  1175. and distance?

  1176. When we

  1177. realize that

  1178. we don't

  1179. have it

  1180. all together,

  1181. we can

  1182. care for

  1183. people because

  1184. we no longer

  1185. feel morally

  1186. superior to

  1187. them.

  1188. Consequently,

  1189. we are

  1190. quicker to

  1191. help than

  1192. to give

  1193. advice,

  1194. quicker to

  1195. listen than

  1196. to lecture.

  1197. Lastly,

  1198. Paul Miller

  1199. says,

  1200. our helplessness

  1201. is the door

  1202. to the knowledge

  1203. of God.

  1204. without

  1205. changing

  1206. the heart,

  1207. obsessing

  1208. over rules

  1209. is like

  1210. spray painting

  1211. garbage.

  1212. I think

  1213. we all

  1214. are guilty

  1215. or at

  1216. least have

  1217. done this

  1218. to others,

  1219. whether

  1220. we have

  1221. done this

  1222. to our

  1223. family members,

  1224. our

  1225. coworkers,

  1226. our friends,

  1227. or even

  1228. in our

  1229. church

  1230. community.

  1231. that we

  1232. judged.

  1233. We felt,

  1234. hey,

  1235. I am,

  1236. I never

  1237. do that.

  1238. This,

  1239. I am

  1240. holier than

  1241. thou kind

  1242. of attitude,

  1243. this arrogance.

  1244. And maybe

  1245. sometimes we

  1246. really push

  1247. that legalism.

  1248. so,

  1249. if I can

  1250. make a

  1251. contrast

  1252. between

  1253. the

  1254. platform

  1255. that

  1256. Pharisees

  1257. and the

  1258. scribes

  1259. were standing

  1260. on,

  1261. it was

  1262. judging.

  1263. It was

  1264. self-righteousness

  1265. and arrogance

  1266. and the

  1267. legalism.

  1268. Now,

  1269. Jesus,

  1270. on the other

  1271. hand,

  1272. he's standing

  1273. on this

  1274. platform

  1275. that is

  1276. abundantly

  1277. mercy,

  1278. love,

  1279. compassion,

  1280. and forgiveness.

  1281. What a

  1282. contrast.

  1283. Now,

  1284. in John

    John 8 chapter mention

  1285. chapter 8,

  1286. there is

  1287. this

  1288. woman

  1289. who was

  1290. caught

  1291. in the

  1292. middle of

  1293. adultery.

  1294. So,

  1295. they brought

  1296. this woman,

  1297. you know,

  1298. in that

  1299. time,

  1300. in that

  1301. society,

  1302. it was

  1303. lawful

  1304. to stone

  1305. this woman

  1306. to death.

  1307. And they

  1308. brought her

  1309. to Jesus

  1310. and they

  1311. start

  1312. asking Jesus,

  1313. Moses told

  1314. us to stone

  1315. someone like

  1316. this who

  1317. was committing

  1318. adultery.

  1319. What do you

  1320. say?

  1321. And Jesus

  1322. wrote something

  1323. on the ground

  1324. and then

  1325. he told

  1326. the crowd,

  1327. those of

  1328. you who

  1329. have never

  1330. sinned,

  1331. throw the

  1332. first stone.

  1333. And then

  1334. one by

  1335. one,

  1336. the Bible

  1337. says,

  1338. starting from

  1339. the old

  1340. to young,

  1341. they dropped

  1342. the stone

  1343. and then

  1344. they walked

  1345. away.

  1346. at the

  1347. end,

  1348. it was

  1349. just

  1350. the woman

  1351. and Jesus.

  1352. And Jesus

  1353. asked the

  1354. woman,

  1355. woman,

  1356. where are

  1357. they?

  1358. Has no

  1359. one condemned

  1360. you?

  1361. She said,

  1362. no one,

  1363. Lord.

  1364. And Jesus

  1365. said,

  1366. neither do I

  1367. condemn you.

  1368. Go

  1369. and sin

  1370. no more.

  1371. No more.

  1372. instead of

  1373. having

  1374. judgmental,

  1375. I am

  1376. better than

  1377. you,

  1378. I am

  1379. holier than

  1380. you,

  1381. or being

  1382. so caught

  1383. up in

  1384. legalism,

  1385. can we

  1386. be,

  1387. can we

  1388. be like

  1389. Jesus?

  1390. Neither

  1391. do I

  1392. condemn

  1393. you.

  1394. Jesus

  1395. had every

  1396. right,

  1397. to

  1398. condemn

  1399. this

  1400. woman.

  1401. Jesus

  1402. had

  1403. every

  1404. right

  1405. to

  1406. judge

  1407. her,

  1408. punish

  1409. her,

  1410. and

  1411. condemn

  1412. her.

  1413. But

  1414. Jesus

  1415. didn't.

  1416. The

  1417. mercy,

  1418. the

  1419. forgiveness,

  1420. the

  1421. compassion,

  1422. Jesus

  1423. said,

  1424. I do

  1425. not

  1426. condemn

  1427. you

  1428. either.

  1429. Go

  1430. and

  1431. sin

  1432. no

  1433. more.

  1434. How

  1435. quickly

  1436. we

  1437. judge

  1438. our

  1439. brothers

  1440. and

  1441. sisters.

  1442. How

  1443. quickly

  1444. we

  1445. judge

  1446. our

  1447. co-workers,

  1448. our

  1449. family

  1450. members.

  1451. And how

  1452. often we

  1453. feel,

  1454. hey,

  1455. I,

  1456. just like

  1457. the scribe,

  1458. the lawyers

  1459. said,

  1460. if we

  1461. lived during

  1462. our

  1463. ancestors'

  1464. time,

  1465. we would

  1466. have never

  1467. killed those

  1468. prophets,

  1469. never.

  1470. And how

  1471. often we

  1472. have that

  1473. same attitude.

  1474. Oh,

  1475. I would

  1476. have never

  1477. done that.

  1478. I would

  1479. have never

  1480. done that.

  1481. and how

  1482. quickly we

  1483. apply.

  1484. Well,

  1485. that's against

  1486. the law,

  1487. that's against

  1488. the Bible,

  1489. that's against

  1490. this.

  1491. Using the

  1492. legalism

  1493. to put

  1494. others down.

  1495. And I

  1496. would also

  1497. like to

  1498. ask,

  1499. I'm sure

  1500. some of

  1501. us here

  1502. tonight

  1503. were hurt

  1504. in the

  1505. past,

  1506. or maybe

  1507. still hurting

  1508. from these

  1509. remarks,

  1510. or people

  1511. passed,

  1512. you know,

  1513. judgment on

  1514. you,

  1515. or people

  1516. pressed you

  1517. with legalism.

  1518. Maybe you

  1519. were taught

  1520. in a

  1521. such a,

  1522. in a very

  1523. legalistic

  1524. you know,

  1525. teachings.

  1526. Whatever it

  1527. is,

  1528. if you

  1529. are carrying

  1530. such a

  1531. burden,

  1532. or wounds

  1533. from the

  1534. past,

  1535. bring it

  1536. to Jesus,

  1537. where is

  1538. he's waiting.

  1539. He's waiting

  1540. for us

  1541. with

  1542. mercy,

  1543. compassion,

  1544. love,

  1545. and

  1546. forgiveness.

  1547. People may

  1548. have

  1549. hurt you

  1550. in the

  1551. past,

  1552. with this

  1553. Pharisee-like,

  1554. scribe-like

  1555. teachings and

  1556. attitude,

  1557. but what

  1558. Jesus is

  1559. saying is,

  1560. come to

  1561. me.

  1562. I do

  1563. not condemn

  1564. you.

  1565. Come

  1566. and receive

  1567. healing,

  1568. receive

  1569. mercy,

  1570. receive my

  1571. love,

  1572. my compassion.

  1573. now,

  1574. chapter 12,

  1575. verse 1.

  1576. In the

  1577. meantime,

  1578. when so

  1579. many thousands

  1580. of people

  1581. had gathered

  1582. together,

  1583. that they

  1584. were trampling

  1585. one another,

  1586. he began

  1587. to say to

  1588. his disciples

  1589. first,

  1590. beware of

  1591. the leaving

  1592. of the

  1593. Pharisees,

  1594. which is

  1595. hypocrisy.

  1596. nothing is

  1597. covered up

  1598. that will

  1599. not be

  1600. revealed,

  1601. or hidden

  1602. that will

  1603. not be

  1604. known.

  1605. Therefore,

  1606. whatever you

  1607. have said

  1608. in the

  1609. dark

  1610. shall be

  1611. heard in

  1612. the light,

  1613. and what

  1614. you have

  1615. whispered in

  1616. private rooms

  1617. shall be

  1618. proclaimed on

  1619. the housetops.

  1620. Verse 3 was

  1621. a little bit,

  1622. it was a little

  1623. bit tricky.

  1624. what is he

  1625. saying that

  1626. all this

  1627. hypocrisy

  1628. will be

  1629. revealed,

  1630. or is he

  1631. saying,

  1632. you have

  1633. light in

  1634. you,

  1635. and proclaim

  1636. the gospel.

  1637. Now,

  1638. next week,

  1639. Pastor Matt

  1640. is going to

  1641. continue

  1642. chapter 12

  1643. where Jesus

  1644. talks about,

  1645. do not fear

  1646. the man,

  1647. acknowledge

  1648. me before

  1649. man.

  1650. So,

  1651. I wonder

  1652. if

  1653. verse 3,

  1654. chapter 12

  1655. verse 3

  1656. is

  1657. Jesus

  1658. leading

  1659. people,

  1660. his

  1661. disciples

  1662. saying,

  1663. proclaim

  1664. the gospel.

  1665. Do not

  1666. fear

  1667. man,

  1668. acknowledge

  1669. me before

  1670. man.

  1671. Now,

  1672. now,

  1673. now,

  1674. now,

  1675. now,

  1676. now,

  1677. now,

  1678. now,

  1679. now,

  1680. now,

  1681. now,

  1682. now,

  1683. now,

  1684. now,

  1685. now,

  1686. now,

  1687. the light,

  1688. going back

  1689. to the light,

  1690. parable of

  1691. light,

  1692. I will

  1693. read this

  1694. parable from

  1695. chapter 5,

  1696. verses 14

  1697. to 16,

  1698. and listen

  1699. to what

  1700. Jesus is

  1701. telling all

  1702. of us

  1703. to do.

  1704. You are

  1705. the light

  1706. of the

  1707. world,

  1708. a city

  1709. set on

  1710. a hill

  1711. cannot

  1712. be hidden,

  1713. nor do

  1714. people light

  1715. a lamp

  1716. and put

  1717. it under

  1718. a basket,

  1719. but on

  1720. a stand,

  1721. and it

  1722. gives light

  1723. to all

  1724. in the

  1725. house.

  1726. In the

  1727. same way,

  1728. let your

  1729. light shine

  1730. before others

  1731. so that

  1732. they may

  1733. see your

  1734. good works

  1735. and give

  1736. glory

  1737. to your

  1738. Father

  1739. who is

  1740. in

  1741. heaven.

  1742. heaven.

  1743. So,

  1744. do you

  1745. have

  1746. Jesus'

  1747. light in

  1748. you?

  1749. And are

  1750. you

  1751. let the

  1752. light

  1753. shine

  1754. so that

  1755. people

  1756. around

  1757. you

  1758. can be

  1759. drawn

  1760. to that

  1761. light?

  1762. Or are

  1763. we still

  1764. in the

  1765. darkness

  1766. like the

  1767. Pharisees

  1768. and the

  1769. law

  1770. experts

  1771. because

  1772. we're so

  1773. busy

  1774. judging

  1775. and we

  1776. feel that

  1777. we are

  1778. doing okay,

  1779. holy,

  1780. better than

  1781. others?

  1782. Oh,

  1783. I keep

  1784. the law.

  1785. I read

  1786. the Bible

  1787. and I

  1788. follow the

  1789. Bible.

  1790. Are we

  1791. all just

  1792. wrapped up

  1793. in that

  1794. which is

  1795. basically

  1796. darkness?

  1797. Or are

  1798. we like

  1799. Jesus

  1800. where

  1801. the light

  1802. shines

  1803. and the

  1804. mercy

  1805. and love

  1806. and compassion

  1807. and forgiveness

  1808. just flows

  1809. out

  1810. to others?

  1811. In a

  1812. minute,

  1813. we're going

  1814. to sing

  1815. a song

  1816. that talks

  1817. about

  1818. there is

  1819. a fountain

  1820. and this

  1821. fountain

  1822. consists of

  1823. Jesus'

  1824. blood.

  1825. Come to

  1826. the fountain

  1827. and receive

  1828. the light

  1829. so that

  1830. we can

  1831. be the

  1832. light of

  1833. the world.

  1834. Whatever it

  1835. is,

  1836. bring it

  1837. to Jesus.

  1838. whatever

  1839. that was

  1840. you're

  1841. struggling

  1842. in the

  1843. darkness,

  1844. when you

  1845. receive

  1846. Jesus

  1847. and when

  1848. he is

  1849. the source

  1850. of light

  1851. in you,

  1852. it will

  1853. clear away

  1854. the darkness.

  1855. Every

  1856. corner of

  1857. the room

  1858. will be

  1859. illumined.

  1860. So,

  1861. we are

  1862. the light

  1863. of the

  1864. world

  1865. and let

  1866. our light

  1867. shine

  1868. before others

  1869. so that

  1870. they may

  1871. see our

  1872. good works

  1873. and give

  1874. glory to

  1875. our Father

  1876. who is

  1877. in heaven.

  1878. Let us

  1879. pray.

  1880. Amen.

  1881. Amen.

  1882. Amen.

  1883. Lord Jesus,

  1884. thank you

  1885. for

  1886. coming

  1887. to this

  1888. world

  1889. and thank

  1890. you for

  1891. being the

  1892. light

  1893. that chases

  1894. away all

  1895. the darkness

  1896. and Lord

  1897. we pray

  1898. that we

  1899. will have

  1900. you,

  1901. the gospel,

  1902. your mission

  1903. in us

  1904. like a

  1905. bright light

  1906. that shines

  1907. so that

  1908. others

  1909. can see

  1910. the light

  1911. and be

  1912. equally

  1913. be blessed

  1914. and all

  1915. that we

  1916. do,

  1917. Lord,

  1918. help us

  1919. to do

  1920. for the

  1921. glory of

  1922. God.

  1923. In Jesus

  1924. name we

  1925. pray.

  1926. Amen.

  1927. Let's

  1928. stand

  1929. together

  1930. and let's

  1931. sing.

  1932. there's

  1933. a fountain

  1934. filled with

  1935. our

  1936. drawn from Emmanuel's hand,

1937. and sinners' plans beneath and blood lose all.
