  1. Well, good morning.

  2. As if you are visiting here this morning, you may know, may not know that we typically

  3. preach through books of the Bible.

  4. And we are in the middle of the book of 1 Corinthians.

  5. We're actually at chapter 12.

  6. If you want to turn there in your pew Bibles, it's page 959 in those Bibles.

  7. And we will be looking today at the first 11 verses of chapter 12.

  8. And so let me give you a moment to get there.

  9. And as you look, I want to say again to all of you who are celebrating either this weekend

  10. or some other weekend before or after celebrating some kind of graduation or commencement, we

  11. are so glad to celebrate that with you.

  12. 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verses 1 through 11.

    1 Corinthians 12:1–11

  13. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.

  14. You know that when you were pagans, you were led away to mute idols, however you were led.

  15. Therefore, I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says

  16. Jesus is accursed.

  17. And no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit.

  18. Now there are a variety of gifts, but the same Spirit.

  19. There are varieties of service, but the same Lord.

  20. And there are varieties of activities.

  21. But it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

  22. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

  23. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom.

  24. To another, the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit.

  25. To another, faith by the same Spirit.

  26. To another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit.

  27. To another, the working of miracles.

  28. To another, prophecy.

  29. To another, the ability to distinguish between Spirits.

  30. To another, various kinds of tongues.

  31. To another, the interpretation of tongues.

  32. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit who apportions to each one individually as He wills.

  33. Will you pray with me as we consider this passage.

  34. Lord, we this morning invite this one Spirit who you have told us in this passage is at work among your people.

  35. Oh Spirit, will you work in us this morning.

  36. Lord, open our hearts.

  37. Lord, to your work in our lives.

  38. To encourage us.

  39. To strengthen us.

  40. To challenge us.

  41. Lord, open our minds that we may understand you rightly.

  42. And so worship you rightly.

  43. Lord, this morning use this passage in our hearts, in our lives, we pray.

  44. In Jesus' name.

  45. Amen.

  46. Amen.

  47. So, one of the things I love about having little kids is the way they interact.

  48. Particularly in a city like New Haven.

  49. Last year, my kid went to, my oldest one went to a school with 17 children.

  50. He was the only Caucasian in the class.

  51. And he didn't know it.

  52. And it was a beautiful thing.

  53. And by that I mean, it just didn't occur to him that his classmates had a different color skin.

  54. Or a different kind of hairstyle.

  55. Or a different kind of.

  56. He just experienced the diversity of his friends as other people that he knew.

  57. And he cared about them and played with them.

  58. And it didn't make a difference.

  59. And I love that about little kids.

  60. I love the way they don't see those things.

  61. But of course, as a normal course of developmental psychology, as we grow up, we begin to notice these things.

  62. We begin to notice these differences.

  63. And interestingly, so easily at that point, we begin to take those differences.

  64. And rather than exploring them as wonderful things that God has created.

  65. We explore.

  66. We instead end up using them.

  67. They become a pretext for separation between me and you.

  68. We find ourselves walking into a room and thinking, who are the social groupings?

  69. Where do I fit in?

  70. Where do I fit on the pecking order in this room?

  71. Who are the people like me?

  72. Who are my people?

  73. And who are them?

  74. Who are the other people in this room?

  75. We admire some.

  76. We disparage others.

  77. And in fact, one of the things that is exposed in our hearts is that we're actually uncomfortable

  78. with who we are.

  79. We walk into a room and we think, I don't know how I fit in.

  80. Am I going to be accepted?

  81. Am I going to be loved?

  82. And so we find, we gravitate towards these things.

  83. These people who are like us.

  84. And we create these barriers around people who are different than us.

  85. Because we feel insecure.

  86. And in doing so, we also become unable to accept others as they are.

  87. And to value them.

  88. This is a common dynamic.

  89. Our sermon this morning is not about race relations or things like that.

  90. Our sermon is about spiritual gifts.

  91. And isn't it true that as we think about our spiritual lives, we do the same thing?

  92. Last week, Pastor Greg talked about the problem in the Corinthian church where they gathered

  93. for the Lord's Supper and yet separated and divided according to socioeconomic class.

  94. Around here, we might do it for education.

  95. For race.

  96. For all sorts of other reasons.

  97. We might do it for what is perceived to be spiritual maturity.

  98. Oh, he's really smart.

  99. I think he's really spiritual.

  100. I'm not very spiritual.

  101. I don't know where I fit in here.

  102. It seems like this is what was going on in the Corinthian church too.

  103. Way back when, when we preached through chapters one through four, we saw that there were divisions

  104. among them.

  105. They were connecting to particular kinds of leaders.

  106. They were exalting particular kinds of spiritual wisdom that would separate some from others.

  107. They were exalting spiritual experiences.

  108. And their apparent triumphalism looked down on those who were weak.

  109. Those who were needy.

  110. Those who were less in the eyes of the world.

  111. And these divisions created this competitive community in the Corinthian church.

  112. It was characterized by arrogance, disunity, disarray.

  113. I think maybe it sounded like, I don't know if you were ever in a high school rock and roll band.

  114. I wasn't, but my brother was.

  115. And I saw them practice.

  116. And when you get four teenage kids together to worship,

  117. do you know what they all want to do all the time?

  118. They want to do their solos.

  119. They want to do their thing.

  120. And so the four of them are not playing together as a band.

  121. They're playing four of them all wanting to be lead at the same time.

  122. And that kind of competition, I think, is what so easily infects our society

  123. and what so easily infects the church of Jesus Christ.

  124. This kind of things.

  125. And it's not what God called us to be.

  126. It's so easy for us to exalt the service we do

  127. and to begrudge others who don't do the same thing.

  128. It's so easy to resent the people who don't help in the ways that we do

  129. and to look down on the people who don't have the gifts that we do.

  130. And rather than rejoicing and valuing the differences,

  131. we can ignore or dismiss them.

  132. We'll see as the book goes on.

  133. For those of you who will be around for a while,

  134. when we get to chapter 14, we'll see the real issue has to do with speaking in tongues

  135. and the place that speaking in tongues played in that church.

  136. But we won't get to that today.

  137. Because as we see in 1 Corinthians, as we saw in chapters 8 through 10,

  138. there's this structural move that Paul does.

  139. He begins to address an issue and he instantly jumps not to the answer to the question that's being asked,

  140. but he jumps to a higher principle.

  141. And so all of chapter 12 is about spiritual gifts,

  142. the broad category of speaking in tongues.

  143. And all of chapter 13 is about love,

  144. which is about the character of how we hold our spiritual gifts,

  145. before he gets to chapter 14

  146. and before he actually answers the question that the Corinthian church has asked.

  147. And the question that they're really asking is,

  148. what does it look like to be truly a spiritual person?

  149. What does it look like to really have the Spirit of God working in you?

  150. Does it have this competitive one-upness,

  151. this I have this gift and you don't kind of characteristic or not?

  152. In fact, that's what we see in verses 1 through 3 of our passage.

  153. As we're launching into it,

  154. look with me with that just for beginning.

  155. He begins,

  156. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers,

  157. and I want you to look down at the bottom of the page,

  158. if your eyesight is better than mine,

  159. you can read that footnote without glasses.

  160. And that footnote says,

  161. Spiritual Persons.

  162. It's unfortunate that the ESV titled this as Spiritual Gifts,

  163. because I think that Paul is actually saying

  164. something more profound than just what is the gifting that we have.

  165. He wants them to understand what it means to be a person of the Spirit,

  166. a person who has the Spirit of God working in them.

  167. So in verse 2 he says,

  168. You remember what it was like when you worshipped other gods,

  169. and you didn't have the Spirit.

  170. Those other gods were mute.

  171. They couldn't help you.

  172. They couldn't gift you.

  173. They didn't actually do things for you, did they?

  174. And then in verse 3 he says,

  175. But,

  176. here's what you need to remember.

  177. If you claim to be a Christian,

  178. if you claim to

  179. profess Jesus Christ as Lord,

  180. then you have

  181. the Spirit of God in you.

  182. It is not these gifts,

  183. it's not all these other things,

  184. it is simply that

  185. appropriation and reception

  186. of the gospel

  187. that Jesus is Lord.

  188. He's recalling what he said in Romans 14 about,

  189. or Romans 10,

  190. where he says,

  191. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord

  192. and believe in your heart

  193. that God raised Him from the dead,

  194. you will be saved.

  195. This is the core message of the Christian life,

  196. is it not?

  197. That we who,

  198. in our sin,

  199. are helpless before God

  200. to ever be righteous enough

  201. to earn His acceptance,

  202. have had God do something amazing for us.

  203. He has sent Christ,

  204. and Christ has lived

  205. the life without sin

  206. that we ought to have lived.

  207. And He died the death

  208. that we deserved

  209. because of our sin.

  210. And He rose from the dead

  211. to new life

  212. so that He might

  213. show that He has conquered sin

  214. and that our sins can be forgiven.

  215. And He has conquered death.

  216. And now He offers us

  217. a new spiritual

  218. and eternal life

  219. that is always His.

  220. And He says,

  221. If you confess Jesus Christ as Lord,

  222. then the Spirit of God is in you.

  223. If you reject Him,

  224. if you curse Jesus,

  225. then you don't.

  226. But He's saying,

  227. being a spiritual person

  228. is fundamentally having

  229. the Spirit of God.

  230. And then He goes on

  231. and He talks about

  232. how the Spirit of God

  233. works in His people.

  234. And that's what I want to focus on

  235. for the rest of our time this morning.

  236. The main thing that I want us to learn,

  237. the big idea of this passage,

  238. is that God has given various gifts

  239. as manifestations

  240. of His one Spirit

  241. for the good of all people.

  242. And we're just going to go through that

  243. one at a time.

  244. God has given various gifts

  245. because of one Spirit

  246. for the good of all.

  247. So let's look at those things in turn.

  248. The various giftings

  249. that God gives

  250. to His people.

  251. I want to step back

  252. briefly

  253. and try to give

  254. a bit of a context for this.

  255. Because one of the things

  256. that I think we struggle with

  257. in the Christian church

  258. as we're talking about

  259. spiritual giftings

  260. is that

  261. we come here

  262. day after day,

  263. week after week,

  264. year after year,

  265. and we think about

  266. what are we about?

  267. We're about the gospel.

  268. We're about the work

  269. of God's work in us,

  270. transforming us

  271. to be like Christ

  272. and God's word

  273. going out from us

  274. to bring light

  275. into the darkness

  276. of the world

  277. that we live in.

  278. Right?

  279. And often,

  280. we do all these things

  281. and we're learning

  282. about Christian growth

  283. and we're learning

  284. about mission

  285. and all these things.

  286. And then,

  287. then we get to Christian,

  288. to spiritual gifts

  289. and it's like we step

  290. out of the main room

  291. and into this little side room.

  292. And we sort of talk about it

  293. like it's this,

  294. its own little category

  295. that's completely disconnected

  296. from the rest of spiritual,

  297. from the rest of our normal church life

  298. and Christian life.

  299. But Paul is trying to say,

  300. no, no, no.

  301. Do you see,

  302. even from the very beginning?

  303. Right?

  304. It is those who profess

  305. Jesus as Lord

  306. who have the Spirit.

  307. And the thing about

  308. the spiritual gifts

  309. is that it is the Spirit

  310. who is giving God's people

  311. the ability

  312. to do spiritual good

  313. to other people.

  314. Look with me

  315. at verses 4 through 6 again.

  316. There are variety gifts

  317. but the same Spirit.

  318. Varieties of service

  319. but the same Lord.

  320. And varieties of activities

  321. but it is the same God

  322. who empowers.

  323. them all

  324. in everyone.

  325. The emphasis here

  326. is that

  327. it is God

  328. who is working

  329. in the midst of these people

  330. to do things.

  331. It is not like

  332. it is not some special thing

  333. like an add-on package

  334. to your software.

  335. It's not an optional side thing.

  336. It is actually an integral part

  337. of how it is

  338. that God wants to work

  339. in His people.

  340. Now what are these giftings?

  341. What do they look like?

  342. Now here again

  343. we run up to

  344. a whole host

  345. of really difficult

  346. questions

  347. or misunderstandings

  348. maybe

  349. because one of the things

  350. is we think

  351. well

  352. you know

  353. these gifts here

  354. seem pretty supernatural.

  355. when you look at the list

  356. when you look at the list in 7 through 11

  357. a lot of them seem pretty

  358. like healing

  359. and miracles

  360. and prophecy

  361. like wow

  362. these are really special.

  363. These are somehow

  364. really different

  365. than our normal

  366. everyday lives.

  367. But friends

  368. I want to

  369. want to just point out

  370. to you

  371. that chapter 12

  372. and chapter 13

  373. are next to each other

  374. and we'll dive into it

  375. later.

  376. But let me ask you this

  377. is it more supernatural

  378. to see someone healed

  379. or to actually love

  380. your enemy?

  381. Is it more supernatural

  382. to speak

  383. a spontaneous word

  384. from the Lord

  385. or is it more supernatural

  386. for you to be patient

  387. and kind

  388. with someone

  389. who is hard to live with?

  390. As we'll see

  391. Paul sees all of this

  392. as the work of the Spirit

  393. in our hearts.

  394. So we need to make sure

  395. we don't exalt gifts

  396. to some special place

  397. that isn't a normal part

  398. of the Christian life

  399. or somehow separate

  400. from Christian character

  401. and conduct.

  402. It's not a separate room

  403. whereby we do ministry

  404. according to gifting

  405. differently

  406. than what we do

  407. on a day-to-day basis.

  408. It's meant to be integrated.

  409. And you see this

  410. when you look at

  411. the other list of gifts

  412. in other places

  413. in the New Testament.

  414. There's one at the end

  415. of 1 Corinthians 12.

  416. There's one in Romans 12.

  417. There's one in Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  418. chapter 4.

  419. There's one in 1 Peter.

  420. These are the normal...

  421. And when you look

  422. through these lists

  423. you will see more broadly

  424. that those lists

  425. include some things

  426. that seem very supernatural

  427. or paranormal

  428. as one of the commentators use.

  429. But some of them

  430. seem very mundane.

  431. The gift of giving.

  432. The gift of administration.

  433. The gift of service.

  434. But friends,

  435. the only reason

  436. why we stumble over those

  437. is because we have

  438. in our mind

  439. the idea that gifting

  440. is something else

  441. other than

  442. the Spirit of God

  443. helping people

  444. to serve others

  445. for their good,

  446. for their spiritual good.

  447. and it may look more

  448. or less spectacular

  449. but it is good.

  450. Sometimes I think

  451. we think of spiritual gifts

  452. as like superheroes.

  453. You know?

  454. I want to be Iron Man.

  455. I want to be Spider-Man.

  456. I want to be Thor.

  457. You know?

  458. And I have this particular gift

  459. that I can do

  460. that nobody else can do.

  461. And instead

  462. God is saying

  463. no, no, no, no, no.

  464. Look,

  465. you're all on the same team.

  466. And God is going to give you

  467. particular ways

  468. in which you can serve

  469. one another.

  470. What are some of those ways?

  471. What about the gifts

  472. that he lists here?

  473. I'm going to try

  474. really briefly

  475. to give a definition

  476. for each one of these gifts

  477. because he blows through them

  478. really quickly.

  479. Right?

  480. He just says

  481. oh yeah,

  482. an utterance of wisdom

  483. and an utterance of knowledge

  484. and prophecy

  485. and tongues

  486. and you think

  487. what in the world

  488. does that mean?

  489. Let me try.

  490. Let me try.

  491. And as we look at it

  492. I want to say

  493. two things about it.

  494. One is that

  495. the gifts may

  496. or may not be

  497. spontaneous.

  498. By that I mean

  499. some gifting

  500. may exert itself

  501. in the moment

  502. without preparation.

  503. Some gifts

  504. may exert themselves

  505. with preparation

  506. and forethought

  507. and planning.

  508. Some gifts

  509. may be

  510. work in both ways

  511. at different times

  512. or in different people.

  513. So let's make sure

  514. that we don't think

  515. that it has to be spontaneous.

  516. The other thing

  517. we need to see

  518. and we'll explore this more

  519. in chapter 14

  520. is that spiritual gifts

  521. are not infallible.

  522. And so one who might

  523. have the gift of healing

  524. I don't believe

  525. will always heal someone

  526. that they pray for.

  527. And someone who has

  528. a gift of prophecy

  529. will have that gift

  530. of prophecy

  531. weighed by the elders

  532. in the corporate setting.

  533. It is not that

  534. these giftings

  535. are again

  536. like super powers

  537. that are infallible.

  538. They are

  539. the spirit's enabling

  540. of us.

  541. And we know

  542. that we don't

  543. always do it right.

  544. That we don't

  545. always get it right.

  546. We don't always

  547. handle it right.

  548. So as we explore

  549. this thing

  550. we recognize

  551. that with humility

  552. we recognize

  553. God may use us

  554. graciously.

  555. We never take

  556. a sense of ownership

  557. of these gifts

  558. as they are

  559. for ourselves.

  560. Alright.

  561. So here we go.

  562. You ready?

  563. If you're taking notes

  564. we're going to go

  565. through this fast.

  566. The utterance

  567. of wisdom

  568. is the ability

  569. to give guidance

  570. that is consistent

  571. with Christ's stress

  572. on self-sacrifice

  573. and the well-being

  574. of others.

  575. The utterance

  576. of knowledge

  577. is a message

  578. or a word

  579. spoken

  580. marked by theological

  581. understanding

  582. or insight.

  583. The gift

  584. of faith

  585. is

  586. not

  587. the gift

  588. of faith

  589. that is given

  590. to all believers

  591. on the basis

  592. of their trusting

  593. in the work

  594. of Christ

  595. for their salvation

  596. which is the

  597. fundamental faith

  598. that all believers

  599. share.

  600. The gift

  601. of faith

  602. is an extraordinary

  603. God-given confidence

  604. in his saving power

  605. and presence

  606. and that he is now

  607. presently acting.

  608. so it's someone

  609. who has the ability

  610. to see

  611. and discern

  612. and believe

  613. that God

  614. is at work

  615. in something.

  616. Healing

  617. is a privilege

  618. of being

  619. the channel

  620. of physical

  621. healing

  622. in someone else.

  623. Miracles

  624. the privilege

  625. of serving

  626. as a channel

  627. for the in-breaking

  628. of God's

  629. final rule

  630. his eschatological rule

  631. into the present age

  632. in a particular way

  633. that overcomes

  634. sin

  635. or the fall.

  636. I was,

  637. well,

  638. did you get that?

  639. What it means

  640. is that

  641. God is going

  642. to use

  643. a particular person

  644. to bring in

  645. the power

  646. that he will

  647. ultimately exert

  648. over all the world

  649. when he returns

  650. and establishes

  651. his kingdom fully

  652. where all things

  653. work according

  654. to his will.

  655. So it might be

  656. he has power

  657. over nature.

  658. It might be

  659. he has power

  660. over,

  661. he can stop

  662. the sun in the sky.

  663. He can stop

  664. an army in its tracks.

  665. He can do

  666. all of these things.

  667. He doesn't do it

  668. all the time

  669. but there are times

  670. when he does it

  671. and he does it

  672. sometimes through people.

  673. Prophecy.

  674. We looked at this

  675. last week.

  676. Nick mentioned it

  677. in chapter 14

  678. verse 3.

  679. There's a really

  680. good definition

  681. of it.

  682. One who speaks

  683. to people

  684. for their upbuilding

  685. and encouragement

  686. and consolation.

  687. Not foretelling,

  688. although that's possible,

  689. but that's not

  690. the heart of it,

  691. but telling forth

  692. what is true

  693. about God

  694. in a way

  695. that helps

  696. other people.

  697. the distinguishing

  698. of spirits

  699. is the special

  700. ability

  701. to evaluate

  702. the origin,

  703. authority,

  704. and application

  705. particularly

  706. of prophetic messages.

  707. Speaking in

  708. different kinds

  709. of tongues,

  710. I'm going to punt

  711. on this one

  712. a little bit

  713. just so you know

  714. because we're going

  715. to deal with it

  716. in chapter 14

  717. in a lot of detail

  718. and so we'll get

  719. back to it,

  720. but tongues

  721. is the ability

  722. to speak

  723. in an unlearned

  724. human,

  725. possibly angelic

  726. language.

  727. I know that begs

  728. all the questions

  729. if anyone's been

  730. exposed to it

  731. and I'm just going

  732. to punt on it.

  733. Hang in there,

  734. come back,

  735. listen to the sermon

  736. in four weeks,

  737. we'll get to it.

  738. And the interpretation

  739. in tongues

  740. is the ability

  741. to translate

  742. or interpret

  743. what was said

  744. to God

  745. through the gift

  746. of tongues.

  747. So it's related

  748. to that.

  749. Alright,

  750. so that's what

  751. those mean.

  752. Okay?

  753. What I want you

  754. to see

  755. is that

  756. as you pull

  757. them together,

  758. what are they?

  759. They are,

  760. in this particular

  761. list,

  762. focusing on

  763. there are

  764. words

  765. spoken to

  766. the congregation

  767. for their good,

  768. for their spiritual

  769. good,

  770. or their actions

  771. that display

  772. a confidence

  773. in

  774. or a work

  775. of God

  776. as he

  777. continues the work

  778. in his world

  779. of building

  780. his kingdom.

  781. That's what's

  782. happening with

  783. spiritual gifting

  784. in this list.

  785. This list doesn't

  786. have some of the

  787. other ones like

  788. administration and

  789. service and mercy.

  790. When we preach

  791. through Romans,

  792. we'll get to those.

  793. But a few other

  794. things you want

  795. to see is that

  796. the emphasis here,

  797. as you see Paul

  798. talking through it,

  799. is that there's a

  800. variety of gifts.

  801. To one is given

  802. this,

  803. to another is given

  804. this,

  805. to another is given

  806. this,

  807. to another is given

  808. this.

  809. The gifting is going

  810. to be different

  811. among us.

  812. And the way that we

  813. find ourselves in

  814. this is not a

  815. checklist.

  816. It's not a

  817. closed list of

  818. which one do I

  819. have?

  820. There are 14

  821. gifts,

  822. there are 17

  823. gifts,

  824. there are 18

  825. gifts in the

  826. New Testament.

  827. Which one do I

  828. have?

  829. I actually think

  830. that that's not

  831. the right way to

  832. see them.

  833. But in fact,

  834. we need to

  835. recognize that

  836. these are gifts

  837. that are sovereignly

  838. given by God.

  839. And as they're

  840. sovereignly given

  841. by God,

  842. we want to seek

  843. to simply recognize

  844. where God is

  845. working in us

  846. and where God is

  847. working in others

  848. and to rejoice in

  849. both of them.

  850. And to humbly

  851. receive them

  852. and to see the

  853. difference among

  854. them.

  855. And to be

  856. thankful for

  857. that.

  858. Part of what

  859. I want you to

  860. hear is that God

  861. has given each

  862. of you who

  863. claim Jesus as

  864. Lord, he has

  865. given you his

  866. spirit.

  867. And his spirit

  868. has gifted you

  869. for service in

  870. his church and

  871. in this world.

  872. world.

  873. And to not be

  874. like the rock

  875. and roll band

  876. competing with

  877. one another,

  878. but to see

  879. what's my part

  880. to play

  881. and how do I

  882. value all the

  883. other gifts that

  884. all these other

  885. people have.

  886. Because otherwise

  887. we end up

  888. dividing ourselves,

  889. don't we?

  890. the differences

  891. become divisions.

  892. So, the first

  893. thing I want you

  894. to hear this

  895. morning is that

  896. God has gifted

  897. you by his

  898. spirit in

  899. various ways.

  900. second thing, he's

  901. gifted you by his

  902. one spirit.

  903. You know, it's

  904. interesting.

  905. Did the

  906. Corinthians really

  907. believe there

  908. were different

  909. spirits empowering

  910. different people in

  911. the church?

  912. Or that some

  913. had the spirit of

  914. God and others

  915. didn't?

  916. Probably not quite

  917. that extreme.

  918. My guess is that

  919. some of them

  920. thought they had

  921. more of the

  922. spirit of God

  923. than others and

  924. that they were

  925. using their

  926. spiritual gifts

  927. to puff up

  928. their ego and

  929. their place in

  930. the body?

  931. And Paul says,

  932. don't you know,

  933. you all have

  934. one and the

  935. same spirit.

  936. Do you see how

  937. often he says

  938. it?

  939. The same spirit,

  940. the same Lord,

  941. the same God,

  942. in verses 4

  943. through 6.

  944. Then in verses

  945. 7 and 8,

  946. or verses 8

  947. and following,

  948. through the

  949. spirit,

  950. the same spirit,

  951. and the same

  952. spirit again,

  953. and the one

  954. spirit,

  955. and the same

  956. spirit again,

  957. every time he

  958. mentions it,

  959. he says,

  960. you all have

  961. the same

  962. one.

  963. Brings to

  964. mind what

  965. Paul said in

  966. Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  967. 4 as he

  968. encouraged unity

  969. in the body.

  970. He said,

  971. there is one

  972. body and one

  973. spirit just as

  974. you were called

  975. to one hope

  976. that belongs

  977. to your call,

  978. one Lord,

  979. one faith,

  980. one baptism,

  981. one God and

  982. Father of us

  983. all,

  984. who is over

  985. all and through

  986. all and in

  987. all.

  988. The unity

  989. of God's

  990. people

  991. is based

  992. on the

  993. unity

  994. of

  995. worshiping

  996. one God.

  997. And the

  998. diversity of

  999. God's people

  1000. in its

  1001. beautifulness,

  1002. in its beauty,

  1003. in its majesty,

  1004. is to display

  1005. the diversity

  1006. of the

  1007. triune God.

  1008. This is what

  1009. we see in

  1010. 4 through 6,

  1011. right?

  1012. God is gifting

  1013. them,

  1014. but then he

  1015. makes an

  1016. explicit

  1017. appeal to

  1018. see.

  1019. Do you see?

  1020. It's the

  1021. Father and

  1022. the Son and

  1023. the Holy Spirit

  1024. who are all

  1025. working in

  1026. this gifting

  1027. and in

  1028. this manifestation.

  1029. It is one

  1030. God who's at

  1031. work in you

  1032. in this

  1033. variety of

  1034. ways.

  1035. So do you

  1036. see how

  1037. the unity

  1038. and diversity

  1039. of the way

  1040. that we

  1041. hold our

  1042. spiritual gifts

  1043. is an

  1044. incredible gift

  1045. and incredible

  1046. stewardship

  1047. because it

  1048. is how

  1049. the church

  1050. displays

  1051. the very

  1052. nature of

  1053. God.

  1054. It is

  1055. parallel to

  1056. what Paul

  1057. said at the

  1058. beginning of

  1059. chapter 11

  1060. about how

  1061. gender

  1062. is a way

  1063. to display

  1064. the diversity

  1065. and the

  1066. beauty of

  1067. God.

  1068. And yet

  1069. it's the

  1070. same reason

  1071. why in

  1072. the second

  1073. half of

  1074. chapter 11

  1075. Paul rails

  1076. against them

  1077. for their

  1078. divisions

  1079. according to

  1080. socioeconomic

  1081. lines.

  1082. This unity

  1083. and diversity

  1084. is a part

  1085. of the

  1086. high

  1087. calling

  1088. of the

  1089. church

  1090. to

  1091. display

  1092. the

  1093. character

  1094. of

  1095. God

  1096. in

  1097. the

  1098. world.

  1099. And

  1100. friends,

  1101. we just

  1102. need to

  1103. see it

  1104. for what

  1105. it is.

  1106. We don't

  1107. need to

  1108. make this

  1109. up.

  1110. We don't

  1111. need to

  1112. create

  1113. unity

  1114. out of

  1115. something

  1116. else.

  1117. The beauty

  1118. of it

  1119. is that

  1120. God has

  1121. said the

  1122. unity

  1123. exists.

  1124. The unity

  1125. is there

  1126. because God

  1127. is one

  1128. and because

  1129. God has

  1130. now gifted

  1131. you as

  1132. his people.

  1133. We don't

  1134. have to

  1135. make up

  1136. the unity.

  1137. We simply

  1138. have to

  1139. acknowledge

  1140. it and

  1141. live in

  1142. light of

  1143. it.

  1144. Friends,

  1145. when we

  1146. do this,

  1147. it makes

  1148. all the

  1149. difference.

  1150. when we

  1151. don't do

  1152. this,

  1153. when we

  1154. fight and

  1155. backbite,

  1156. when we

  1157. compete and

  1158. compare,

  1159. when we

  1160. divide and

  1161. disparage one

  1162. another,

  1163. we look a

  1164. whole lot

  1165. like any

  1166. other human

  1167. organization in

  1168. the world.

  1169. And there's

  1170. no difference.

  1171. But when

  1172. we do

  1173. this,

  1174. when we

  1175. live out

  1176. this unity

  1177. and diversity,

  1178. when we

  1179. do it

  1180. well,

  1181. then God

  1182. is in

  1183. our

  1184. midst.

  1185. And God

  1186. is at

  1187. work.

  1188. And not

  1189. only will

  1190. we see

  1191. it and be

  1192. encouraged,

  1193. but the

  1194. world will

  1195. see it.

  1196. And we'll

  1197. be drawn

  1198. to ask

  1199. why.

  1200. How could

  1201. this be?

  1202. And that's

  1203. why spiritual

  1204. gifting isn't

  1205. this extra

  1206. room on the

  1207. side, but

  1208. it's woven

  1209. into the

  1210. warp and

  1211. woof of

  1212. how we're

  1213. supposed to

  1214. live.

  1215. Because as

  1216. we hold it

  1217. properly, we

  1218. display the

  1219. nature of

  1220. God.

  1221. Third thing

  1222. is that not

  1223. only do we

  1224. do it, not

  1225. only are there

  1226. diverse gifts,

  1227. a variety of

  1228. gifts, not

  1229. only is there

  1230. one spirit, but

  1231. that there's a

  1232. purpose for

  1233. this.

  1234. We do this

  1235. for the

  1236. common good.

  1237. God, in

  1238. his great

  1239. wisdom and

  1240. in his great

  1241. power and

  1242. his gracious

  1243. work in

  1244. our lives, has

  1245. given us

  1246. gifts, but

  1247. he's not

  1248. given them

  1249. gifts to

  1250. us for

  1251. our sake.

  1252. We are

  1253. not the

  1254. terminal

  1255. end point

  1256. of the

  1257. gifting so

  1258. that we can

  1259. think highly

  1260. of ourselves

  1261. about what

  1262. our wonderful

  1263. gifts are, or

  1264. so that we

  1265. can think,

  1266. well, now I

  1267. know what my

  1268. gift is, so

  1269. my job is

  1270. simply to

  1271. exercise my

  1272. gift without

  1273. any concern

  1274. for the

  1275. people of

  1276. God.

  1277. instead it

  1278. is this.

  1279. Look with

  1280. me in verse

  1281. seven, you'll

  1282. see it again.

  1283. Each is

  1284. given the

  1285. manifestation of

  1286. the spirit for

  1287. the common

  1288. good.

  1289. And the

  1290. common good is

  1291. the goal that

  1292. God has given

  1293. for all of

  1294. these things.

  1295. The spirit is

  1296. at work in

  1297. us, not for

  1298. our sake, but

  1299. for others'

  1300. sake.

  1301. We will see

  1302. this as we

  1303. go through the

  1304. rest of chapter

  1305. 12 and

  1306. chapter 13 and

  1307. chapter 14.

  1308. It is the

  1309. subtext of it

  1310. over and over

  1311. and again.

  1312. How is it,

  1313. brothers and

  1314. sisters, that

  1315. you are loving

  1316. others by

  1317. your gifting

  1318. and by your

  1319. service?

  1320. This is the

  1321. goal.

  1322. So how do we

  1323. do this

  1324. practically?

  1325. How do we

  1326. live this out?

  1327. How do we

  1328. respond to

  1329. this idea of

  1330. try to give

  1331. in a few

  1332. minutes, just

  1333. a few minutes,

  1334. a few practical

  1335. ideas?

  1336. First, how do

  1337. we discern our

  1338. spiritual gifts?

  1339. I hate to

  1340. say it, I

  1341. don't think the

  1342. inventories are

  1343. that helpful.

  1344. You can go

  1345. online and

  1346. take a test.

  1347. I think they

  1348. tend to be

  1349. self-determining.

  1350. You tend to

  1351. end up having

  1352. the gift that

  1353. you think you

  1354. have or the

  1355. one that you

  1356. want to have.

  1357. You can still

  1358. look at them,

  1359. they're still

  1360. helpful for you

  1361. to think through

  1362. them.

  1363. But you know

  1364. the best way

  1365. to discern what

  1366. your spiritual

  1367. gift is?

  1368. Go serve.

  1369. Go serve

  1370. others.

  1371. Be obedient to

  1372. the opportunities

  1373. that God gives

  1374. you to love

  1375. one another.

  1376. Don't wonder

  1377. if I don't

  1378. think I can

  1379. do that, I

  1380. don't have the

  1381. ability to do

  1382. it.

  1383. Try it anyways.

  1384. Often, the

  1385. Spirit of God

  1386. seems to work

  1387. through people

  1388. who don't think

  1389. that they can

  1390. do it.

  1391. Like Moses, I'm

  1392. not very eloquent.

  1393. Well, I'm going

  1394. to send you to

  1395. be my spokesman

  1396. to the people

  1397. of Egypt.

  1398. That's often

  1399. what God

  1400. does.

  1401. So go serve.

  1402. Go find a

  1403. place.

  1404. Get over

  1405. yourself.

  1406. If you feel

  1407. like you have

  1408. to perform

  1409. perfectly or be

  1410. completely competent

  1411. something before

  1412. you try it.

  1413. Because when

  1414. you do that,

  1415. you don't leave

  1416. room for the

  1417. Spirit to

  1418. actually enable

  1419. you and to

  1420. see God

  1421. work.

  1422. Recognize that

  1423. as you keep

  1424. serving, and

  1425. as you keep

  1426. asking your

  1427. brothers and

  1428. sisters, where

  1429. do you see

  1430. God using me?

  1431. That's the

  1432. best way that

  1433. you will know

  1434. how you are

  1435. gifted.

  1436. If you're

  1437. wondering that,

  1438. ask the people

  1439. who know you

  1440. best.

  1441. Ask your

  1442. small group.

  1443. Ask your

  1444. roommates.

  1445. Ask your

  1446. husband or

  1447. wife.

  1448. Come talk to

  1449. the elders.

  1450. We probably

  1451. have less

  1452. view than

  1453. many others,

  1454. but we'll

  1455. try.

  1456. We'll try to

  1457. help you think

  1458. through it, if

  1459. that would be

  1460. helpful.

  1461. Trust and

  1462. believe that

  1463. God will

  1464. use you, and

  1465. that he has

  1466. gifted you, and

  1467. then go serve.

  1468. Secondly, what

  1469. about our

  1470. attitudes and

  1471. spiritual gifts?

  1472. Paul's rebuking

  1473. the Corinthians

  1474. for what we

  1475. see in chapter

  1476. four, verse

  1477. seven.

  1478. He says, what

  1479. do you have

  1480. that you did

  1481. not receive, and

  1482. if you then

  1483. received it, why

  1484. do you boast as

  1485. if you did not

  1486. receive it?

  1487. So easily, we

  1488. think of spiritual

  1489. gifts as something

  1490. that becomes a

  1491. badge of honor

  1492. for us.

  1493. And instead,

  1494. what we want to

  1495. do is to see

  1496. them as gracious

  1497. gifts from God.

  1498. One of the ways

  1499. that this plays

  1500. itself out, and

  1501. this is one of

  1502. the fun things, and

  1503. one of the

  1504. challenging things

  1505. about the

  1506. co-pastorate model

  1507. that we live in

  1508. here, is that we

  1509. have three of us

  1510. who are differently

  1511. gifted, and there

  1512. are times when we

  1513. don't always see

  1514. eye to eye, and

  1515. there are times

  1516. when we think,

  1517. what in the world

  1518. are you thinking?

  1519. And there are

  1520. times when we

  1521. have to work, and

  1522. it is in those

  1523. moments when, by

  1524. God's grace, I

  1525. respond well, that

  1526. I am able to

  1527. say, what is the

  1528. gift that that

  1529. person is bringing

  1530. to this conversation

  1531. right now?

  1532. It's actually been

  1533. really helpful for

  1534. me, because in

  1535. that conflict, instead

  1536. of saying, I just

1537. want to be right, and

  1538. I just want to win, I

  1539. start thinking, how

  1540. is it that this

  1541. person is contributing

  1542. something different to

  1543. the conversation?

  1544. conversation, and how

  1545. can I value that?

  1546. Oh, we still

  1547. disagree, but we

  1548. get along, because

  1549. of that, I think.

  1550. That kind of

  1551. humility, trying to

  1552. figure out how to

  1553. honor one another, is

  1554. seeing that the

  1555. people who maybe

  1556. most rub you the

  1557. wrong way around

  1558. here are the

  1559. people who have the

  1560. very gift that you

  1561. need exercised in

  1562. your life by

  1563. someone else.

  1564. Third thing, we've

  1565. talked about this a

  1566. little bit, how does

  1567. the, how does

  1568. spiritual gifting fit

  1569. into our greater

  1570. calling of the Great

  1571. Commission to go and

  1572. make disciples of all

  1573. nations?

  1574. What does it look

  1575. like?

1576. Let me, let me run it

  1577. through this grid for

  1578. you.

  1579. If the Great Commission

  1580. is about two things,

  1581. evangelism, that is

  1582. sharing the good news

1583. of what God has done

  1584. with people outside the

  1585. church, and

  1586. discipleship, developing

  1587. people in Christ

  1588. likeness and growth

  1589. and maturity inside

  1590. the church, recognize

1591. this, if you have the

  1592. gift of service, your

  1593. evangelism, your

  1594. outreach to others is

  1595. going to look different

  1596. than someone who has

  1597. the gift of teaching.

1598. But you both can do

  1599. it.

1600. You both can reach out

  1601. to your neighbor in

  1602. love.

1603. One might start a Bible

  1604. study, one might mow

  1605. their neighbor's lawn,

1606. but the end goal is

1607. still to say, do you

1608. know what God has done

  1609. for you in Jesus?

1610. Doing this is not, I

  1611. know there's a gift of

  1612. evangelism, and those are

  1613. wonderful people, we love

1614. to see them, and it's

  1615. someone who God

  1616. specially uses people to

  1617. explain and to make

  1618. Christ known to other

  1619. people.

1620. We praise God for them,

1621. but that doesn't let the

1622. rest of us off the hook.

1623. But we need to make sure

1624. we don't think, well it

1625. has to look like that for

1626. me to be doing it.

1627. We need to say, how is it

1628. that in the gifting that I

1629. have, in the way that God

1630. has made me, that I can

  1631. share this precious

  1632. message with others?

  1633. And similarly, with

  1634. discipleship.

1635. What is it going to look

1636. like if you have the gift

  1637. of administration, and

  1638. you're discipling someone?

  1639. How different is that

1640. going to be from someone

1641. who has the gift of

  1642. mercy?

  1643. Well, probably wildly

  1644. different, right?

1645. But both of them are

  1646. going to have great

1647. input into the lives of

  1648. their fellow brothers and

  1649. sisters.

  1650. So recognize that

  1651. spiritual gifts are then

1652. run through, maybe this is

1653. a way to say it, they are

  1654. the lenses through which

  1655. the fundamental and core

1656. callings on our lives are

  1657. lived out as believers.

  1658. believers.

1659. So for us to take hold of

1660. that and to think about how

  1661. does that work?

  1662. Well, because it's

  1663. graduation weekend, I want

1664. to recognize some of you are

  1665. moving on.

1666. What I want you to hear is

  1667. this.

1668. Know that the Spirit has

1669. gifted you, and as you go,

1670. go find the place that God

1671. wants to use you and the

1672. gifts that He has given you

1673. for the building up of His

  1674. kingdom and for the

1675. building up of His church.

1676. Wherever you go, find a

1677. church and serve in it.

  1678. Bless them by your

  1679. gifting.

  1680. Recognize that you need

  1681. them.

  1682. Recognize that in the

1683. diversity of gifts and in

1684. the diversity of the church

  1685. world, and recognize even

  1686. that, like, I think

  1687. denominations sometimes are

  1688. gathered around certain

  1689. spiritual gifts.

1690. You may go to a church that's

  1691. going to feel really

  1692. different than Trinity, but

1693. that feel may or may not be

  1694. an important thing.

1695. You may go to a church where

1696. you're going to learn all

  1697. sorts of very different

1698. things, but if they uphold

1699. the Word of God, if they

1700. preach the true gospel of

  1701. Jesus Christ and Him

  1702. crucified, if they recognize

1703. their call to be a part of

  1704. the Great Commission, think

1705. about how you can invest and

1706. learn in a church that may be

  1707. very different from this.

1708. And see how you can bless it

1709. and bring what you may have

1710. learned here to that church

  1711. as well.

1712. For all of us, the message is

  1713. actually similar.

1714. For those of us who aren't

1715. going along, for those of us

1716. who are staying here, know

1717. that God has gifted you to

  1718. bless this church, Trinity

1719. Baptist Church, to bless this

  1720. city, New Haven.

1721. And take up this call.

1722. Take up this call to not be

1723. the rock band who competes, but

1724. let us be instead the symphony

1725. where the woodwinds and the

1726. brass and the strings and the

1727. percussion all take their role.

1728. And as the great conductor

1729. plays the music of the gospel

1730. among us, may there be this

1731. great display of the diversity

1732. of our instruments and the

1733. unity of our music for the

  1734. glory of God.

  1735. Let us do that.

  1736. Let's pray.

1737. Lord, we thank you for your

1738. spirits and we pray that we

1739. would today, Lord, be both

  1740. humbled and encouraged.

  1741. Humble, Lord, because these

1742. giftings come from you and our

1743. lives are meant to be about you.

1744. And by extension about others, that

1745. we would worship you and love

1746. others for your namesake in our

  1747. gifting.

1748. Lord, encourage us that you want

1749. to use us in those ways.

1750. And Lord, we pray that in the

1751. diversity and unity of our body,

1752. that we would display you for your

  1753. glory.

1754. We pray in Jesus' name.

  1755. Amen.
