  1. We're looking at the Bible, page 873, and we're going to read chapter 14, verses 1 to 24.

  2. There are three stories we're looking at tonight, but they all have one main point.

  3. So, they all happen in the same place, and at the same time, Jesus is eating dinner on

  4. Sabbath, probably after going to synagogue worship for the service this morning, somebody

  5. invited them over for lunch, and the leaders, and this is where the conversation happened.

  6. So, let's read chapter 14.

  7. One Sabbath, when Jesus went to dine in the house of the ruler of the Pharisees, they were

  8. not too good to care for him.

  9. And behold, there was a man before him, and a drop seat.

  10. And Jesus responded to the Lord's comparison, saying, Is it all the people of the Sabbath

  11. were not?

  12. They were made of silence.

  13. Then he took him and healed him, and said, Quick.

  14. And he says to them, Which of you, having a son or an aunt, who is only in the well, except

  15. that they have not immediately blown out, and they have not replied to these things?

  16. Now, he told him, there are a lot of those who were invited.

  17. He noticed how they took a place of honor, saying to them, When you are invited by someone

  18. to a wedding feast, don't sit down in the place of honor.

  19. By someone who are distinguished, then you be invited by.

  20. And he would invite you to go, He will come and say to you, Give your place to this person,

  21. and then you will be with shame, to take the lowest place.

  22. Go anywhere, and write him to the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to

  23. you, Friend, who have fire, and will be honored.

  24. And the brethren who have said, He will give you, For everyone who exalts himself will

  25. be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

  26. He also said to the men who have invited him, When you give a dinner or a banquet, don't

  27. invite friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also divide you in

  28. return and you be your king.

  29. For when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will

  30. be blessed, because they did not pay.

  31. For you will be with the resurrection of the house.

  32. And one of those who would find a table with him heard these things, he said, Blessed is

  33. everyone, will eat bread in the kingdom of God.

  34. But Jesus said to him, A man once gave a great banquet, and quite a minute.

  35. And at the time of the banquet, he sent his servants to say to those who have been invited,

  36. not for him, and he is now ready, but they all alike can't make excuses.

  37. The first said, I bought a field, and I must have bought a field, and I said, please have

  38. any excuses.

  39. And another said, I bought five yoke boxes, and I go to the center, and please have any excuses.

  40. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

  41. So the servant came and reported to this, and he was a master.

  42. So then the master of the house became angry, and said to the servant, go out quickly to the

  43. streets and lay in the city and bring in the floor and purples of wine and laying.

  44. I realized that the wife was unlisted.

  45. So it was a little, that was a little, okay, okay, okay, cool.

  46. I'm just coming over again.

  47. Let's look back a few minutes.

  48. Thank you.

  49. Thank you.

  50. Thank you.

  51. Thank you.

  52. Thank you.

  53. of Luke is the song of Mary.

  54. And Mary says this.

  55. Mary says, He has scattered the crowd

  56. and come off their hearts.

  57. He has brought down the mighty from their thrones

  58. and exalted but lifted up

  59. those who have humbled the state.

  60. He has filled a hundred good things

  61. and richly extenciated.

  62. So that's Mary's opening song

  63. that's where he opens the book of Luke.

  64. And then, if you look at the first

  65. sermon that Jesus

  66. preaches in the Gospel of Luke,

  67. this is what Jesus says, chapter 4.

  68. Jesus says, The Spirit of the Lord is

  69. upon you because he has appointed me to proclaim

  70. good news to the poor.

  71. He will claim liberty

  72. to the captains and the

  73. poverty of sight to the blind. He said that the

  74. people who are oppressed and

  75. claim to hear the Lord's favor.

  76. So we've already got a hint

  77. by those two things.

  78. The first public

  79. proclamation

  80. that the whole

  81. Gospel is going to be about God

  82. bringing down the crowd and

  83. praise and how it's

  84. for the poor and

  85. love.

  86. And that's what we see

  87. tonight.

  88. So let's look section by section.

  89. The first section of the story

  90. we see Jesus is

  91. on the brain

  92. healing

  93. for the afflicted.

  94. Verse 1-6.

  95. And we

  96. want you to

  97. count it to the

  98. news for this man

  99. with dropsy.

  100. Now, dropsy

  101. is a word that means

  102. swelling

  103. due to excess fluid in the body.

  104. It's usually a problem with your heart

  105. or your kidneys.

  106. We can't be a process of fluid.

  107. And so

  108. it's a sad condition

  109. because you're always thirsty.

  110. But the more you drink,

  111. the more bloated

  112. and so

  113. your body

  114. becomes.

  115. Right?

  116. And back in Jesus' day,

  117. some people

  118. think

  119. people didn't

  120. quite know about

  121. that condition.

  122. And some people thought,

  123. well, maybe that condition

  124. is caused by

  125. excessive

  126. craving

  127. for physical

  128. pleasures.

  129. And so people thought,

  130. maybe that's

  131. that's why

  132. you have this

  133. this experience

  134. where many people

  135. kept their distance

  136. from people

  137. with dropsy

  138. and swelling.

  139. But what we see

  140. with Jesus

  141. is that

  142. he was different.

  143. He was actively

  144. compassionate.

  145. It says he took him

  146. and healed him

  147. and sent him away.

  148. Now,

  149. that word

  150. sent him away

  151. is actually

  152. the best translation

  153. because literally

  154. it means

  155. to release him.

  156. So it would mean

  157. he sent him away

  158. but it would also

  159. just be

  160. he sent him free.

  161. It's actually

  162. the same word

  163. that was used

  164. back in chapter 13

  165. when Jesus healed

  166. as a woman

  167. who had been

  168. punched over

  169. for 18 years

  170. that she straightened

  171. down.

  172. And he talked

  173. about Jesus

  174. as a blue circle

  175. instead of free.

  176. So in both

  177. of these situations

  178. Jesus brings

  179. healing and freedom

  180. to someone

  181. who's been afflicted

  182. by disease

  183. for a long time.

  184. And, you know,

  185. it's actually

  186. not an accident.

  187. And Luke

  188. really likes him

  189. to put two stories

  190. next to each other.

  191. He does a lot.

  192. Two characters

  193. right next to each other

  194. of confidence

  195. one man

  196. and one woman.

  197. So here's a woman

  198. who's healed

  199. in the synagogue

  200. on the Sabbath

  201. in chapter 13

  202. and now here's a man

  203. who's healed

  204. after the worship

  205. of the synagogue

  206. also on the Sabbath.

  207. And Luke

  208. has a lot of these

  209. pairs

  210. throughout his gospel

  211. so like Mary

  212. and Zachariah

  213. and St.

  214. talking praise

  215. and the beginning

  216. and the beginning

  217. or Simeon and Dan

  218. are both standing

  219. in the temple.

  220. Mary and Joseph

  221. together obey

  222. God's commands.

  223. And it's interesting

  224. to notice this pattern.

  225. I think there's two things

  226. this is just a bit

  227. of a side note

  228. but I think there's

  229. two things

  230. that Luke is doing

  231. with this.

  232. One is

  233. there's the principle

  234. of two witnesses

  235. establish a valid testimony.

  236. In the Old Testament

  237. it says every man

  238. must be established

  239. by a testimony

  240. of two or three witnesses.

  241. And so Luke often

  242. gives us

  243. two people

  244. often men

  245. who went side by side

  246. who are both

  247. testifying to

  248. in this case

  249. the healing

  250. and liberating

  251. power of Jesus.

  252. And that's a reminder

  253. of how

  254. God originally

  255. made human beings

  256. in his image

  257. male and female

  258. and Jesus

  259. comes to restore

  260. and heal

  261. male and female

  262. alike.

  263. So I think

  264. that's why we see

  265. these pairs

  266. in the gospel.

  267. So we see

  268. there's good news

  269. for the conflicted man.

  270. We also see

  271. in this section

  272. there's bad news

  273. for the passive

  274. Pharisees, right?

  275. Notice the Pharisees

  276. what they do

  277. in this section.

  278. In verse 1 it says

  279. they were watching

  280. and careful

  281. but then they

  282. don't do anything

  283. and they don't say anything.

  284. And most likely

  285. they invited this guy

  286. with swelling

  287. in his body

  288. to test Jesus.

  289. Most likely

  290. they probably

  291. wouldn't have

  292. invited him

  293. to their house

  294. otherwise

  295. they wanted

  296. to put him there

  297. and they said

  298. watch with Jesus

  299. carefully.

  300. Oh, right in front

  301. of Jesus

  302. there's this man.

  303. Right?

  304. They're testing him.

  305. And then Jesus

  306. asks them a question.

  307. He says,

  308. Paul,

  309. is it right to get

  310. on the seventh

  311. or not?

  312. They can't

  313. really say anything.

  314. And then Jesus

  315. reminds them

  316. and he reminds them

  317. of something

  318. that the law said

  319. in New York

  320. it says,

  321. you shall not

  322. see your brother's

  323. donkey or ox

  324. fallen down

  325. by the way

  326. and be born

  327. and you shall

  328. help him

  329. to lift him up

  330. again.

  331. Because of the man

  332. in the Old Testament

  333. law

  334. and Jesus

  335. reminding him

  336. that we have to say

  337. well,

  338. would you obey

  339. that command

  340. on the Saturday?

  341. And how much more

  342. should I lift

  343. someone up

  344. who has been

  345. afflicted

  346. and marginalised

  347. and lift them

  348. up again?

  349. Isn't that what

  350. the Sabbath

  351. is about to restore

  352. and heal

  353. God through creation

  354. especially God's people?

  355. And in the end,

  356. I can't say a thing.

  357. There's nothing

  358. they can say.

  359. They're sort of

  360. in order

  361. because Jesus

  362. has been faithful

  363. to the scriptures

  364. and they just

  365. can't say anything

  366. against him.

  367. So,

  368. for each of these sessions

  369. I'm going to draw

  370. one point.

  371. One practical

  372. discipleship point

  373. because it makes,

  374. as we said,

  375. this whole session

  376. include Jesus

  377. teaching us

  378. how to be his followers

  379. what he used to be

  380. in disciples.

  381. So the point

  382. I'm going to draw

  383. from this section

  384. is Jesus

  385. teaching his disciples

  386. that he shows

  387. active compassion

  388. rather than

  389. passive indifference

  390. when he sees people

  391. have faith.

  392. He sees people

  393. grow afloat.

  394. And he wants

  395. his disciples

  396. to learn from them

  397. and share that

  398. same heart

  399. of active compassion

  400. rather than

  401. passive indifference.

  402. That's the first section.

  403. Second section.

  404. Second section,

  405. I mean,

  406. second section

  407. is actually

  408. 7 through 14.

  409. There's two parts

  410. to this.

  411. In verse 7

  412. it says,

  413. Jesus told a parable

  414. to those who were

  415. invited,

  416. that is to the guest.

  417. then you look at verse 12

  418. it says,

  419. he also says

  420. to the man

  421. who had invited him

  422. presumably the host.

  423. So Jesus had

  424. verse of the guest

  425. in 7 to 11

  426. and verse of the host

  427. in verse 18.

  428. And they're talking

  429. about

  430. sacred and evil.

  431. So we see this section,

  432. the first section

  433. we saw

  434. giving for the afflicted

  435. and here we see

  436. honor for the humble.

  437. So

  438. going through this section

  439. in verse 7

  440. it's interesting

  441. in the beginning

  442. it says people

  443. were watching Jesus

  444. carefully

  445. but he was also

  446. watching them carefully.

  447. He noticed

  448. that some of them

  449. chose the best seats

  450. and they wanted to sit

  451. at the end of the table

  452. and they wanted to sit

  453. next to the host

  454. that was really

  455. the best seat

  456. because then the host

  457. would introduce you

  458. to his best friends

  459. and he would sort

  460. of make connections.

  461. That's what he would do

  462. at these inner parties.

  463. That's why

  464. a lot of people

  465. would have these parties

  466. and attend these parties

  467. because he wanted

  468. to make connections

  469. and he wanted

  470. to sort of advance

  471. your social status

  472. without that.

  473. So I'm going to buy

  474. some of his house

  475. I'll go there

  476. maybe I'll meet

  477. somebody else

  478. maybe I'll help

  479. you get a better job

  480. maybe I'll connect

  481. with so-and-so

  482. right as the ancient

  483. version of networking

  484. is going to these

  485. dinner parties

  486. and people

  487. of course

  488. were trying

  489. to touch

  490. what they could

  491. to get as close

  492. to the top

  493. as they could

  494. and Jesus challenged

  495. them.

  496. He says

  497. don't promote

  498. yourself

  499. it's better

  500. to take a worse seat

  501. and be invited

  502. to move up

  503. than take the best seat

  504. and be embarrassed

  505. to have to move down.

  506. Now at first

  507. that advice

  508. seems

  509. it almost seems

  510. calculated

  511. right?

  512. You know

  513. it's sort of like

  514. well

  515. you may know

  516. you might get

  517. a little boosted

  518. you may be too high

  519. you might get

  520. to come down

  521. so you don't need

  522. to come down

  523. now that's sort of

  524. proverbial advice

  525. in a lot of

  526. cultures

  527. Proverbs

  528. 25

  529. 6

  530. 7

  531. but Jesus

  532. is actually

  533. verse 11

  534. Jesus is actually

  535. going to eat

  536. so I'm just

  537. saying

  538. well

  539. okay

  540. so

  541. put yourself

  542. in a lower

  543. place

  544. and most

  545. most

  546. will serve

  547. on God

  548. and that'll

  549. make you better

  550. right?

  551. Jesus says

  552. everyone

  553. who exalts

  554. himself

  555. and promotes

  556. himself

  557. to become

  558. brought down

  559. and the one

  560. who promos

  561. himself

  562. to be exalted

  563. and in that

  564. verse

  565. Jesus is speaking

  566. in what is

  567. sometimes called

  568. the divine

  569. acid

  570. so it's a

  571. passive voice

  572. basically saying

  573. the active voice

  574. would be saying

  575. God will humble

  576. those who exalt

  577. himself

  578. Jesus just says

  579. everyone who exalts

  580. themselves

  581. they will be

  582. humbled

  583. the question is

  584. by who?

  585. and the

  586. application is

  587. by God

  588. right?

  589. so if there was

  590. a common fact

  591. speaking

  592. and you were

  593. speaking

  594. they will be

  595. humbled

  596. they will be

  597. exalted

  598. and you knew

  599. oh he speaks

  600. about God

  601. and that's

  602. what Jesus

  603. is speaking

  604. about in

  605. verse 11

  606. and so what

  607. he's really

  608. challenging us

  609. to say

  610. is where

  611. do you get

  612. your honor

  613. and security?

  614. are you trying

  615. to sort of

  616. advance

  617. a level

  618. by your

  619. connection

  620. to other

  621. people

  622. or are you

  623. seeking

  624. the honor

  625. that comes

  626. from God?

  627. and he's

  628. really telling

  629. me

  630. the Pharisees

  631. because the Pharisees

  632. as we've seen

  633. in other parts

  634. try to exalt

  635. themselves

  636. and try to

  637. appear

  638. as rulers

  639. and models

  640. and Jesus

  641. warning them

  642. you're trying

  643. to exalt

  644. yourself

  645. about a

  646. holy

  647. but we see

  648. that Jesus

  649. confident in

  650. his identity

  651. from God

  652. Jesus

  653. is willing

  654. to humble

  655. himself

  656. Jesus

  657. had this

  658. complete security

  659. and so he

  660. could humble

  661. himself

  662. in the lowest

  663. place

  664. without despairing

  665. addressing

  666. that God

  667. would exalt him

  668. so this is

  669. the discipleship

  670. point from

  671. this section

  672. which he is

  673. teaching his

  674. disciples

  675. he's reminding

  676. us

  677. again

  678. who he is

  679. that he is

  680. willing to

  681. follow himself

  682. and in

  683. his resurrection

  684. he will be

  685. a father

  686. but he's

  687. saying

  688. as followers

  689. of Jesus

  690. we call

  691. to humble

  692. ourselves

  693. instead of

  694. promote

  695. ourselves

  696. because

  697. we will be

  698. secure

  699. in who we

  700. are in

  701. Jesus

  702. part of

  703. following

  704. Jesus

  705. is learning

  706. to be

  707. comfortable

  708. in being

  709. who you

  710. are

  711. and not

  712. try to be

  713. somebody else

  714. because

  715. you're secure

  716. in who you're not

  717. being

  718. and you're

  719. comfortable

  720. being

  721. that person

  722. because

  723. you know

  724. that comes

  725. to me

  726. and you

  727. know

  728. that's

  729. God's

  730. child

  731. and you

  732. know

  733. that he's

  734. never

  735. going to

  736. take

  737. more

  738. for

  739. safety

  740. so you

  741. can be

  742. secure

  743. and strong

  744. and so you

  745. can humble

  746. yourself

  747. without losing

  748. yourself

  749. and then

  750. Jesus

  751. goes on

  752. verse 12

  753. 14

  754. he's

  755. applying

  756. the same

  757. principle

  758. honor

  759. for the

  760. humble

  761. and he

  762. applies

  763. that to

  764. the

  765. host

  766. right

  767. he's

  768. talking

  769. to

  770. the

  771. guests

  772. 7-11

  773. now he

  774. talks

  775. to the

  776. host

  777. of

  778. 14

  779. and

  780. I mean

  781. just imagine

  782. this

  783. Jesus

  784. has been

  785. invited

  786. to this

  787. man's

  788. house

  789. and here's

  790. what he

  791. says

  792. to the

  793. man

  794. who

  795. invites

  796. him

  797. when you

  798. have a

  799. dinner

  800. go and

  801. invite

  802. friends

  803. or your

  804. brothers

  805. or your

  806. relatives

  807. or rich

  808. neighbors

  809. let's

  810. say

  811. you

  812. invite

  813. you

  814. to

  815. return

  816. go

  817. when you

  818. get

  819. a

  820. feast

  821. invite

  822. the

  823. poor

  824. cripple

  825. the

  826. name

  827. and

  828. the

  829. lion

  830. and

  831. you'll

  832. be

  833. blessed

  834. as

  835. a

  836. can

  837. evade

  838. you

  839. now

  840. that was

  841. like

  842. the

  843. opposite

  844. advice

  845. of

  846. what

  847. almost

  848. anyone

  849. else

  850. will

  851. give

  852. right

  853. why

  854. don't

  855. throw

  856. a

  857. heartache

  858. I

  859. throw

  860. a

  861. heartache

  862. to

  863. hang

  864. up with

  865. people

  866. they

  867. like

  868. and

  869. then

  870. they'll

  871. invite

  872. them

  873. to

  874. their

  875. house

  876. or

  877. you

  878. can

  879. invite

  880. them

  881. strategically

  882. so you

  883. can network

  884. and connect

  885. with them

  886. maybe get

  887. associated

  888. with people

  889. you want to

  890. associate

  891. with so you

  892. can feel

  893. a little

  894. bit more

  895. secure

  896. and Jesus

  897. says

  898. don't

  899. look

  900. back

  901. I

  902. would

  903. just

  904. imagine

  905. saying

  906. have

  907. had

  908. somebody

  909. saying

  910. that

  911. to

  912. the

  913. person

  914. who

  915. invited

  916. them

  917. for

  918. dinner

  919. like

  920. don't

  921. invite

  922. all

  923. people

  924. you

  925. just

  926. invite

  927. them

  928. invite

  929. the

  930. poor

  931. the

  932. people

  933. of

  934. the

  935. women

  936. of

  937. money

  938. what do you

  939. say

  940. right

  941. what do you

  942. say

  943. for those

  944. who are

  945. like

  946. whoa

  947. who is

  948. this

  949. guy

  950. now

  951. doesn't

  952. Jesus

  953. mean

  954. that we

  955. should

  956. literally

  957. never

  958. invite

  959. friends

  960. family

  961. or

  962. wealthy

  963. people

  964. for

  965. dinner

  966. no

  967. I

  968. think

  969. sometimes

  970. Jesus

  971. uses

  972. hyperbole or overstated

  973. to make a point. You look down in verse 26

  974. Jesus talks about

  975. you have to hate your father and mother

  976. and in order to follow me.

  977. Now that does not mean

  978. that you should hate your mother and father.

  979. That's what Bible says. Honor your mother and father.

  980. But it means you should love Jesus more

  981. than anyone else.

  982. Right? And so Jesus

  983. needs to be a strong language

  984. to make a point.

  985. Right? That we need to love him

  986. more than anyone else. And so he

  987. needs to be a strong language here to make a point.

  988. I think one of the reasons Jesus

  989. uses strong language is that if he states

  990. everything more politely, he would

  991. just politely ignore it.

  992. And so he says it strongly so that we

  993. have to deal with it

  994. and have to really

  995. press with what he's saying.

  996. So Jesus is saying, but what he's saying

  997. in Paul 14 is he's saying you should

  998. love people generously

  999. and trust God and take him back.

1000. You should love people without calculating

1001. how much they can pay you back

1002. and what benefits they can give you

1003. if you're connected to them.

1004. You should love people without

  1005. measuring any of that.

1006. And trust that God will repay you again

1007. in the resurrection of the righteous.

  1008. That's a challenge.

1009. I think it's really easy to get into a rut and

1010. basically default into living as if this world is

  1011. mostly all there is.

1012. You think, oh yes, you believe in eternal life,

1013. I guess we'll sort of figure out what that's like

  1014. when you get there.

1015. But I want to try to make as much of this life

  1016. as I can, but I haven't.

  1017. Jesus is saying,

1018. my kingdom is about loving people generously

1019. and trusting God and bring faith in the end.

1020. And then there will be a resurrection

  1021. and that will be,

1022. that will outweigh everything else

1023. on the scales of history.

1024. That will outweigh everything else.

1025. What I think Jesus is trying to teach us

  1026. as his disciples

  1027. is something like this.

  1028. Invite people

1029. who can't pay for themselves,

  1030. who can't pay back,

1031. men who can't get there on their own,

1032. you need to go and pick them up.

1033. I've been through a blind person like that,

1034. but I think it's something to lead them

  1035. wherever the party is.

1036. People who you can't imagine

  1037. how associated with them

1038. would help you advance in society

1039. and might those people be your parties.

  1040. You see, Jesus, Jesus,

1041. I think a lot of us think,

  1042. well, okay,

  1043. showing compassion to people

  1044. who are indeed beings,

1045. that's sort of part of my work.

1046. But when I want to have fun,

1047. I'm going to go have fun with my friends.

1048. And people might all have to be burdened

  1049. with their difficulties.

  1050. And Jesus says,

  1051. actually,

1052. you're going to have fun.

1053. Invite people who have partners.

1054. Invite people who are part.

1055. Invite people who are crippled.

1056. Invite people who are blind.

1057. Invite people nobody else would invite.

1058. Because God will be made for that.

1059. He will be blessed by God.

1060. Because you will be acting like God.

1061. Isn't that what Jesus came to do?

  1062. To come to earth

  1063. and give his blessings

1064. to all of us who are spiritually speaking,

  1065. not just poor, crippled,

  1066. and lame and blind,

1067. but far worse than that.

  1068. Rebels against God.

  1069. Messed up, twisted, broken.

1070. And Jesus came to our work

  1071. to raise his hands.

1072. He is a sign of them.

1073. To show them what that means.

  1074. Go and love people.

1075. You can't think of any benefit

1076. that they will be able to give you to this.

  1077. And just love them.

1078. Pour out your love on them.

  1079. And you might,

1080. they might never pay back.

1081. They might never pay back financially.

1082. They might never pay back socially.

1083. They might never pay back in another way.

1084. But you will be empowered

  1085. by the Holy Spirit

  1086. to do that

1087. if you do what you would say to Jesus.

  1088. So,

  1089. this is a man

  1090. I think we don't talk a lot about,

1091. but I think we should have,

1092. we should take Jesus literally here

  1093. when he says,

1094. invite people who are poor,

  1095. blind,

  1096. and they are rich.

  1097. You know,

  1098. and there's other people

  1099. who are vulnerable

1100. by the kind of those passages,

  1101. but really thinking,

1102. how can we do this quite?

  1103. The next time

1104. the Bible comes over for dinner,

1105. or planning to go to a party,

1106. can you bring some light on them?

  1107. And sometimes,

1108. I think it will teach you

  1109. a kind of joy

1110. that you wouldn't even expect.

  1111. And,

  1112. and all the time

  1113. you realize that

1114. the people that you talk to

1115. will help you in any way

  1116. are actually helping you

1117. in all kinds of ways

  1118. that only God

1119. could have known in advance

  1120. by the people.

  1121. and so,

  1122. there's a blessing

1123. that comes with the resurrection,

  1124. but sometimes,

1125. I think God will give you

1126. that blessing ahead of time.

  1127. So,

  1128. Jesus is saying,

  1129. don't just show compassion

1130. out of pity or duty

1131. as a party of work.

  1132. Show compassion

  1133. in sharing joy.

1134. And why should we do this?

  1135. because

  1136. these are the people

  1137. who God has invited

  1138. in his manger.

  1139. So,

1140. now we go to the third part.

  1141. You see,

  1142. healing from the afflicted,

  1143. on earth,

  1144. and humble.

  1145. And third,

  1146. hospitality,

  1147. leading outcasts.

  1148. Verse 15,

  1149. 24.

1150. And this is sort of

  1151. the concluding parable

  1152. of the section.

  1153. And Jesus

  1154. tells the story

  1155. of a great manger.

  1156. And it begins with

  1157. a guy who's behaved

  1158. like a typical host.

  1159. Right?

  1160. He invites his friends.

  1161. And as you'll see,

  1162. the friends he invites,

  1163. they own property,

1164. one of them has got married,

1165. they're sort of doing well.

  1166. Five goat coxin,

  1167. that means he probably

  1168. got at least

  1169. a hundred acres

  1170. five goat coxin

1171. to plow by the field.

  1172. So,

  1173. we have the host

  1174. when he sort of

  1175. starts off

  1176. in the story

  1177. behaving like

  1178. a typical host

  1179. back then.

  1180. He compares the meal,

  1181. sends out the service

  1182. with a reminder

  1183. and then disaster.

  1184. Everyone

  1185. rejects the invitation

  1186. and no show.

  1187. He can't do it

  1188. at the last time.

  1189. Every single

  1190. last one of them.

  1191. Bad news

  1192. for the host

  1193. who only invites

  1194. his friends and relatives

  1195. and rich neighbors.

  1196. But then the host

  1197. actually changes

  1198. his plan

  1199. verse 21 to 23.

  1200. And he invites

  1201. everyone.

  1202. The poor,

  1203. the poor,

  1204. the blind,

  1205. the language,

  1206. even people

  1207. outside the city gates,

  1208. the people sleeping

  1209. under the bridges.

  1210. people that nobody

  1211. else will think

  1212. they invited.

  1213. And he takes

  1214. special initiatives

  1215. to include the ones

  1216. who would be

  1217. normally left out.

  1218. It's interesting.

  1219. At first,

  1220. he just sends out

  1221. invitations

  1222. and sends his servants

  1223. to tell people

  1224. to come in.

  1225. But in verse 21,

  1226. he doesn't just say,

  1227. well,

  1228. will he then invite

  1229. the poor,

  1230. the little blind,

  1231. the blind.

  1232. And he says,

  1233. bring them in.

  1234. Right?

  1235. They'll need help

  1236. if somebody's crippled.

  1237. They'll need a hand

  1238. to actually get there.

  1239. You can't just go

  1240. to a cripple man

  1241. and say,

  1242. hey,

  1243. come to the parties

1244. a mile or two away.

  1245. He says,

  1246. okay,

  1247. I'll give you a ride.

  1248. And in verse 23,

  1249. he says,

1250. go out to the highways

  1251. and headsets,

  1252. that is,

1253. the end of the earth,

  1254. and compel people

  1255. to come in.

  1256. Now,

  1257. that word compels

  1258. a little confusing.

  1259. It doesn't actually mean

  1260. use force

  1261. and force people

  1262. to come in

  1263. against their will.

1264. That's not what it means.

  1265. Now,

  1266. people visit her

  1267. from the Adam

  1268. and the middle agents

1269. and that was a test.

1270. But what it does mean

  1271. is it's the images

  1272. of someone coming

  1273. and taking the hand

  1274. of somebody

  1275. who feels hesitant

  1276. or afraid

  1277. and saying,

  1278. come with me.

  1279. Yes.

1280. Because it goes to people

  1281. right back then

  1282. if you would invite,

1283. if you were a rich person

  1284. and you invited someone

  1285. who was poor

  1286. at nothing,

  1287. right,

  1288. they only have clothes

  1289. on their back

  1290. and those clothes

  1291. weren't really good,

  1292. they would say,

  1293. oh no,

  1294. I can't do two hands.

  1295. Oh no,

1296. I would be too embarrassed.

1297. I don't have the right clothes on.

  1298. Right?

  1299. Sometimes you believe

  1300. you go this way

  1301. about church,

  1302. right?

  1303. You don't have,

  1304. you don't have,

  1305. you know,

  1306. fleets out of clothes

1307. that look sort of nice.

  1308. Sometimes people like,

  1309. I don't know,

  1310. I can't make sure

  1311. of something else.

  1312. And so what does

  1313. the guy do

  1314. is he says,

  1315. I'm calling to come

  1316. and that is

  1317. take their hand

  1318. and if they're afraid

  1319. or ask them,

  1320. say,

  1321. come with me

  1322. and I'll read it

1323. and I'll walk in with you.

  1324. you know,

  1325. it takes more effort

  1326. than initiative

  1327. to bring in

  1328. some type of people

  1329. into God's kingdom

  1330. but Jesus says

  1331. that is worth it.

  1332. This guy goes

  1333. for about 15 years

  1334. to worship

  1335. at the Columbus House.

  1336. His name is

  1337. Ken Bergen

  1338. and he's part

  1339. of their outreach

  1340. and engagement team.

  1341. So you see

  1342. those who like,

  1343. when it's

  1344. 10 below zero

  1345. on the coldest

  1346. night of the year,

  1347. he's out

  1348. going under

  1349. the bridges

  1350. and where people

  1351. are sleeping out

  1352. in tents

  1353. and he goes

  1354. to find people

  1355. who would never

  1356. commit to a shelter

  1357. otherwise

  1358. and he goes

  1359. out there

  1360. with his team

  1361. of people

  1362. and basically

  1363. just tries to

  1364. bring as many

  1365. people in

  1366. to safety

  1367. and warmth

  1368. as possible.

  1369. And he's probably

  1370. saying people

  1371. fly away.

  1372. I don't know,

  1373. I haven't heard

  1374. all the stories

  1375. of the big break

  1376. and you never know

  1377. what would happen

  1378. otherwise

  1379. but he goes

  1380. in great lengths

  1381. to bring people

  1382. in who

  1383. are generally

  1384. resistant to

  1385. coming in

  1386. and don't want

1387. to be in a shelter

  1388. but really need

  1389. a warm and safe

  1390. place to be.

  1391. And I think

  1392. that's a picture

  1393. of the kind

  1394. of what it means

  1395. to be

  1396. one of Jesus'

  1397. disciples

  1398. inviting people

  1399. in history

  1400. is to have

  1401. that kind

  1402. of perseverance

  1403. and willingness

  1404. to go

  1405. wherever it takes

  1406. and to meet

  1407. people wherever

  1408. they are

  1409. and to take

  1410. the time

  1411. and play

  1412. the need

  1413. and to be

  1414. not just

  1415. throwing out

  1416. an invitation

  1417. and saying

  1418. hey,

  1419. if you ever

  1420. want to come

  1421. you can come

  1422. but to

  1423. come alongside

  1424. people

  1425. and to bring

  1426. them in

  1427. to not see

  1428. them to his

  1429. bank of

  1430. people.

  1431. So

  1432. the point

  1433. of this

  1434. parable

  1435. parable

  1436. of the great

  1437. night

  1438. is good news

  1439. for the guests

  1440. who would never

  1441. normally be invited

  1442. and bad news

  1443. for the guests

  1444. who refuse the invitation

  1445. to take for granted.

  1446. Jesus says

  1447. there's a place

  1448. where I need

  1449. for everyone

  1450. no one

  1451. is excluded

  1452. the only people

  1453. who don't make

  1454. it in are people

  1455. who exclude themselves

  1456. and are refusing

  1457. the invitation.

  1458. Now one last

  1459. thing

  1460. notice the excuses

  1461. that people make

  1462. sometimes we

  1463. read these excuses

  1464. and we sort of

  1465. think well

  1466. aren't they all

  1467. sort of lame excuses

  1468. I feel

  1469. you know

  1470. I have to go

  1471. out and see

  1472. it

  1473. bought some

  1474. oxygen

  1475. to test

  1476. it

  1477. well you should

  1478. probably test

  1479. the oxygen

  1480. before you

  1481. buy it

  1482. so I test

  1483. drive the car

  1484. before you

  1485. buy it

  1486. rather than say

  1487. I just bought

  1488. a car

  1489. you can test

  1490. drive it

  1491. sounds lame

  1492. okay you want

  1493. to test

  1494. it

  1495. okay you want

  1496. to drive

  1497. your car

  1498. that's fine

  1499. that just

  1500. sounds like

  1501. a lame excuse

  1502. for you know

  1503. ditching the

  1504. party

  1505. at the last

  1506. minute

  1507. and bagels

  1508. are normally

  1509. only in the

  1510. evening

  1511. so we're

  1512. going to

  1513. actually be

  1514. able to

  1515. inspect

  1516. the field

  1517. if it's

  1518. almost keeping

  1519. so on one hand

  1520. basically seems

  1521. sort of lame

  1522. but the third

  1523. excuse

  1524. is

  1525. best of all

  1526. because there's

  1527. a verse in

  1528. New Robby

  1529. that says

  1530. if you just

  1531. get married

  1532. it says

  1533. when a man

  1534. is going to be

  1535. married

  1536. he shall not

  1537. grow out

  1538. before he can

  1539. be liable

  1540. for any

  1541. other

  1542. mother

  1543. do

  1544. he shall

  1545. be free

  1546. at home

  1547. one year

  1548. and be

  1549. happy

  1550. with his

  1551. wife

  1552. and be

  1553. a saint

  1554. so basically

  1555. in ancient

  1556. Israel

  1557. if you just

  1558. don't marry

  1559. you have

  1560. a free

  1561. pass

  1562. for all

  1563. military

  1564. and civic

  1565. duties

  1566. not bad

  1567. and so you

  1568. know what

  1569. that's about

  1570. the best

  1571. you should

  1572. come up

  1573. with

  1574. to refuse

  1575. an invitation

  1576. to a dinner

  1577. because

  1578. you don't have

  1579. anything else

  1580. you have

  1581. all year

  1582. you just

  1583. be happy

  1584. be happy

  1585. with your

  1586. new spouse

  1587. but what's

  1588. the point

  1589. that Jesus

  1590. is talking

  1591. about something

  1592. more important

  1593. than military

  1594. more important

  1595. than serving

  1596. a club

  1597. office

  1598. more important

  1599. than anything

  1600. else

  1601. that commands

  1602. our attention

  1603. more important

  1604. even that

  1605. marriage

  1606. makes this

  1607. you can center

  1608. our marriage

  1609. Jesus is

  1610. talking about

  1611. being invited

  1612. to God's

  1613. faith

  1614. invited into

  1615. the relationship

  1616. with God

  1617. to become part

  1618. of God

  1619. and he said

  1620. that's more

  1621. important

  1622. that takes

  1623. priority

  1624. over anti-excuses

  1625. and so even

  1626. the best

  1627. experiences

  1628. not just

  1629. the really

  1630. laid ones

  1631. it sounds

  1632. like somebody

  1633. made a lot

  1634. but even

  1635. the best

  1636. experiences

  1637. are not

  1638. good

  1639. so Judas

  1640. is inviting

  1641. us to be

  1642. part of a

  1643. banquet

  1644. that lasts

  1645. forever

  1646. and then

  1647. in the end

  1648. he says

  1649. I tell you

  1650. none of these

  1651. men to invite us

  1652. will taste

  1653. my

  1654. banquet

  1655. very interesting

  1656. he starts

  1657. as the guest

  1658. at this man's

  1659. house

  1660. he talks to

  1661. the guest

  1662. he talks to

  1663. the host

  1664. and he tells

  1665. this story

  1666. about being

  1667. invited to a

  1668. great banquet

  1669. and then at the

  1670. end he talks

  1671. about it as

  1672. my banquet

  1673. saying I'm

  1674. actually the host

  1675. I'm actually

  1676. inviting you

  1677. to come

  1678. to God's

  1679. banquet

  1680. table

  1681. and I'm

  1682. making way

  1683. that you can

  1684. come in

  1685. and I come

  1686. to find you

  1687. wherever you

  1688. are

  1689. wherever you

  1690. are

  1691. I come

  1692. to shower

  1693. God's love

  1694. upon you

  1695. and bring you

  1696. to welcome you

  1697. home

  1698. don't refuse

  1699. the invitation

  1700. don't make

  1701. an excuse

  1702. however important

  1703. it may seem

  1704. don't miss out

  1705. on the banquet

  1706. that Jesus

  1707. calls us to

  1708. we have

  1709. the description

  1710. of the banquet

  1711. that Jesus

  1712. calls us to

  1713. this is

  1714. Isaiah

  1715. to this

  1716. and on this

  1717. mountain

  1718. the Lord

  1719. goes to

  1720. make all

  1721. people

  1722. a feast

  1723. of richly

  1724. a feast

  1725. of well

  1726. each one

  1727. richly

  1728. full of

  1729. marrow

  1730. and deep

  1731. fine

  1732. well refined

  1733. and he

  1734. will swallow

  1735. up

  1736. upon this

  1737. mountain

  1738. the covering

  1739. that is

  1740. passing

  1741. for all

  1742. the

  1743. people

  1744. call

  1745. death

  1746. forever

  1747. and the

  1748. Lord

  1749. God

  1750. will widen

  1751. away

  1752. his

  1753. eyes

  1754. from

  1755. all

  1756. faces

  1757. and the

  1758. corruption

  1759. is

  1760. he

  1761. will

  1762. take

  1763. away

  1764. from

  1765. all

  1766. the

  1767. earth

  1768. and the

  1769. Lord

  1770. is

  1771. going

  1772. to

  1773. him

  1774. and he

  1775. will

  1776. be

  1777. sent

  1778. on

  1779. him

  1780. and he

  1781. will

  1782. this

  1783. is

  1784. our

  1785. God

  1786. we have

  1787. waited

  1788. for him

  1789. that he

  1790. might

  1791. save

  1792. us

  1793. this is

  1794. the

  1795. Lord

  1796. we have

  1797. waited

  1798. for him

  1799. that he

  1800. brought

  1801. glad

  1802. and rejoiced

  1803. his

  1804. salvation

  1805. you see

  1806. this

  1807. is the

  1808. invitation

  1809. of

  1810. this is

  1811. this is

  1812. what makes

  1813. the

  1814. disciple

  1815. more

  1816. next

  1817. thing

  1818. else

  1819. is to

  1820. receive

  1821. the

  1822. invitation

  1823. of

  1824. Jesus

  1825. to the

  1826. great

  1827. way

  1828. of

  1829. God

  1830. and say

  1831. yes

  1832. we

  1833. conquer that

  1834. kingdom

  1835. and then

  1836. then you

  1837. can extend

  1838. that

  1839. invitation

  1840. and then

  1841. you can

  1842. extend

  1843. that

  1844. love

  1845. without

  1846. any

  1847. boundaries

  1848. because

  1849. of the

  1850. word

  1851. of

  1852. any

  1853. of

  1854. hearts

  1855. thanking

  1856. for

  1857. coming

  1858. while

  1859. you

  1860. państwo

1861. How do you stand through?

1862. Lay through what doesn't satisfy you.

1863. Come eat what is good.

  1864. In Jesus' name,

1865. you made a way for us to come.

1866. You made a way for us to come. You made a way for you.

1867. Your death on the cross and through your resurrection.

1868. Thank you that you have defeated death.

  1869. Until one day

1870. you've got to be swallowed up through.

  1871. Swallowed up in victory.

  1872. In your victory.

1873. Lord, we pray that you would give us joy.

1874. Give us joy in the morning

1875. that you've invited us to the banquet

  1876. and that we have

  1877. said yes to you.

1878. That we are included among

  1879. your disciples

  1880. and your followers.

1881. We have a glorious future ahead of us.

1882. Resurrection of the righteous that be.

1883. A way to long for.

1884. Lord, we pray that you would

  1885. help us to extend

1886. your healing to the afflicted.

  1887. To give honor

  1888. to the humble.

1889. To go to stay here in hospitality

  1890. even to the outcasts.

  1891. Lord, we,

1892. because you have done that for us,

1893. you would come and give us

  1894. and give us honor

  1895. and

1896. welcome us in your kingdom

1897. because of what you have done for us.

  1898. So we thank you.

  1899. Jesus, we pray.

  1900. Amen.

  1901. Amen.

  1902. Amen.

  1903. Amen.

  1904. Amen.

  1905. Amen.

  1906. Amen.

  1907. Amen.

  1908. Amen.

  1909. Amen.

  1910. Amen.

  1911. Amen.

  1912. Amen.

  1913. Amen.

  1914. Amen.

  1915. Amen.

  1916. Amen.

  1917. Amen.

  1918. Amen.

  1919. Amen.

  1920. Amen.

  1921. Amen.

  1922. Amen.

  1923. Amen.

  1924. Amen.

  1925. Amen.

  1926. Amen.

  1927. Amen.

  1928. Amen.

  1929. Amen.

  1930. Amen.

  1931. Amen.

  1932. Amen.

  1933. Amen.

1934. We can move and sing.
