  1. and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

  2. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men, but to God.

  3. For no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the spirit.

  4. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people

  5. for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.

  6. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself,

  7. but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

  8. Now I want you all to speak in tongues,

  9. but even more to prophesy.

  10. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues

  11. unless someone interprets so that the church may be built up.

  12. Now brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues,

  13. how will I benefit you?

  14. Unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching.

  15. If even lifeless instruments such as the flute or the harp

  16. do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played?

  17. And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound,

  18. who will get ready for battle?

  19. So with yourselves.

  20. If with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible,

  21. how will anyone know what is said?

  22. For you will be speaking into the air.

  23. There are doubtless many different languages in the world,

  24. and none is without meaning.

  25. But if I do not know the meaning of the language,

  26. I will be a foreigner to the speaker,

  27. and the speaker a foreigner to me.

  28. So with yourselves.

  29. Since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit,

  30. strive to excel in building up the church.

  31. So this morning we're looking at two spiritual gifts

  32. that Paul describes.

  33. The gift of tongues and the gift of prophecy.

  34. And as we look at those gifts,

  35. we're going to consider the two commands that Paul gives.

  36. One at the beginning of this passage and one at the end.

  37. He says,

  38. earnestly desire the spiritual gifts in verse 1.

  39. And in verse 12 he says,

  40. strive to excel in building up the church.

  41. Now this is a challenging topic.

  42. Let me say that outright.

  43. Because Christians who believe the Bible and love Jesus

  44. haven't always agreed on what these gifts are

  45. and how we should use them.

  46. I grew up in a Pentecostal church

  47. which encouraged everyone to speak in tongues.

  48. And they said that speaking in tongues

  49. was the initial sign of being fully empowered

  50. by the Holy Spirit.

  51. Then for two years in college,

  52. I went to a Presbyterian church.

  53. The Presbyterian church's leaders believed

  54. that the spiritual gifts of prophecy in tongues

  55. ended after the New Testament was completed.

  56. And then I came to Trinity.

  57. By then I wasn't quite sure what to believe.

  58. Maybe you can relate to some part or other of that.

  59. Some of you, like me,

  60. may have come to know Jesus

  61. and follow him in a Pentecostal or charismatic church.

  62. Maybe you've benefited from tongues and prophecy

  63. and you wish that more Christians

  64. would experience and know the blessing of these gifts.

  65. On the other hand,

  66. I know that some of you have had bad experiences

  67. in Pentecostal and charismatic services.

  68. You might have seen people who place more value

  69. on their word from the Lord

  70. than on the word of the Lord, the scriptures.

  71. Or maybe you've seen worship services

  72. that seem to just become chaotic

  73. or even emotionally manipulative.

  74. Maybe you've been there, done that,

  75. and don't want to go back.

  76. Now for others of you,

  77. all this might seem just a bit unfamiliar.

  78. Right?

  79. Maybe you grew up in a wonderful church

  80. that just said prophecy in tongues

  81. were for the first century

  82. and that was just fine back then

  83. and we don't really need them now.

  84. And maybe you're just not sure what to think

  85. because you haven't seen or experienced them

  86. either one way or the other.

  87. Now whatever your church background

  88. or lack thereof,

  89. I'm convinced that Paul's instructions

  90. in this passage can be very helpful

  91. for all of us.

  92. Because Paul was also writing

  93. to a group of people

  94. in the church at Corinth

  95. who didn't all have the same experience

  96. of these gifts

  97. and who weren't all on the same page.

  98. It seems that some of the Corinthians

  99. loved to speak in tongues.

  100. They felt it was a sign

  101. of how spiritually advanced they were,

  102. that they could speak in heavenly languages.

  103. And they did it frequently,

  104. especially when they gathered together.

  105. Other people, it seems,

  106. were into prophesying

  107. and some of these prophets

  108. like to go on and on and on and on.

  109. And if anyone tried to stop them,

  110. they would say,

  111. but the Holy Spirit is speaking through me.

  112. I can't stop.

  113. Other people in the church at Corinth

  114. were not so impressed.

  115. Some people felt alienated

  116. by all the tongue speaking

  117. that they couldn't understand

  118. or they felt like second class Christians

  119. because they hadn't experienced that gift.

  120. It's possible some people were frustrated

  121. and wanted to just get rid

  122. of these things altogether.

  123. Church would be a lot simpler

  124. if we didn't have to deal

  125. with all this prophesying

  126. and tongue speaking.

  127. And so,

  128. the Christians in Corinth

  129. appealed

  130. to their beloved apostle Paul

  131. for some guidance.

  132. Now,

  133. as we've seen

  134. over the last few weeks,

  135. Paul didn't immediately launch

  136. into

  137. instructions about

  138. these particular gifts.

  139. We're in the middle of a section.

  140. In chapter 12,

  141. Paul began by

  142. sort of painting the big picture.

  143. He says,

  144. first of all,

  145. we need to understand

  146. we're all part of the body of Christ.

  147. And in a body,

  148. there's many different parts,

  149. but we're all connected together

  150. and we're all united together.

  151. And so,

  152. we need to recognize

  153. we'll all have different gifts

  154. and we need to use those

  155. to build each other up.

  156. And we need each other.

  157. And then,

  158. in chapter 13,

  159. he said,

  160. I'm going to show you

  161. the most excellent way.

  162. The way of love.

  163. Love.

  164. Verse 1 to 3

  165. of chapter 13,

  166. he said,

  167. even if you have all the spiritual gifts

  168. in the world,

  169. if you don't have love,

  170. if you don't have love for God,

  171. if you don't have love

  172. for your brothers and sisters,

  173. you're empty.

  174. You're nothing.

  175. And then he described

  176. what love is,

  177. how it's tender

  178. and kind

  179. and patient,

  180. how it's truthful

  181. and how it's tenacious,

  182. how it holds on.

  183. And then,

  184. at the end of chapter 13,

  185. he says,

  186. spiritual gifts like prophecy

  187. and tongues and knowledge,

  188. on the day when we see

  189. Jesus face to face,

  190. we won't need those gifts anymore.

  191. But love is going to continue

  192. into eternity.

  193. And it will never cease.

  194. And so Paul says,

  195. pursue love.

  196. Notice that at the beginning

  197. of verse 1.

  198. Before we jump into prophecy

  199. and tongues,

  200. I want you to notice that.

  201. Pursue love,

  202. Paul says.

  203. That means run hard after it.

  204. Don't miss out on it.

  205. We need to hear that command

  206. loud and clear,

  207. to be patient and kind

  208. with one another.

  209. Not to boast

  210. or puff ourselves up

  211. with pride

  212. before we jump into

  213. these topics.

  214. Because sometimes people

  215. have either fixated

  216. on certain spiritual gifts

  217. or they have loudly

  218. proclaimed their views

  219. about them

  220. one way or the other

  221. and forgot about love.

  222. And Paul says,

  223. remember love.

  224. So having said that,

  225. let's jump in.

  226. We're going to look

  227. at tongues first

  228. and then we'll look

  229. at prophecy.

  230. And for each of them,

  231. we're going to look

  232. at what it is,

  233. what benefits

  234. Paul says it has,

  235. and then what dangers

  236. there might be.

  237. So the nature,

  238. the benefits,

  239. the dangers.

  240. First tongues,

  241. then prophecy.

  242. So tongues.

  243. Let's look down,

  244. verse 2.

  245. Paul talks about

  246. the nature of tongues.

  247. He says,

  248. one who speaks in a tongue

  249. speaks not to people

  250. but to God.

  251. In other words,

  252. speaking in tongues

  253. is not an encrypted message

  254. for another person.

  255. It's a form of prayer

  256. or praise

  257. or thanksgiving to God.

  258. If you look down

  259. in verse 14 to 17,

  260. Paul reaffirms that

  261. and uses some of those words.

  262. Now verse 2 continues.

  263. Paul says,

  264. if someone speaks in tongues,

  265. no one understands him.

  266. He utters mysteries

  267. in the spirit.

  268. Paul's assumption

  269. throughout this chapter

  270. is if someone

  271. is speaking in tongues,

  272. that person won't understand

  273. what he's saying

  274. and the people around him

  275. won't understand

  276. what he's saying either

  277. unless someone has

  278. the gift of interpretation.

  279. Now at the same time,

  280. I think Paul's saying

  281. that speaking in tongues

  282. is not just

  283. meaningless gibberish.

  284. Paul says he utters

  285. mysteries in the spirit.

  286. That could mean

  287. he utters hidden

  288. or secret truths of God

  289. or it could simply mean

  290. he speaks to God

  291. in a mysterious way,

  292. in a way that isn't

  293. obviously understandable

  294. by others.

  295. Now many people have wondered

  296. when Paul speaks

  297. about tongues,

  298. is he talking about

  299. speaking in

  300. another human language,

  301. is he talking about

  302. speaking in a heavenly language

  303. or something else?

  304. And in answer

  305. to this question,

  306. I don't think

  307. we can be certain

  308. because Paul doesn't define

  309. what kind of tongue

  310. or languages

  311. he's talking about precisely.

  312. In fact,

  313. if you look at

  314. 1 Corinthians 12 verse 10,

    1 Corinthians 12:10

  315. Paul refers to

  316. various kinds

  317. of tongues.

  318. Now in the book of Acts,

  319. if you look in the book of Acts

  320. in chapter 2,

  321. the believers,

  322. the disciples of Jesus

  323. were praying in the upper room,

  324. the Holy Spirit

  325. came upon them,

  326. they started speaking

  327. in tongues,

  328. and people

  329. from other parts

  330. of the world

  331. who were there

  332. in Jerusalem

  333. on the day of Pentecost

  334. heard them speaking

  335. in their own languages.

  336. In that instance,

  337. God miraculously

  338. empowered believers

  339. to speak in

  340. foreign human languages

  341. that they had never learned,

  342. but other people

  343. understood perfectly.

  344. That also seems to be

  345. what happened

  346. in Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  347. when Cornelius,

  348. the first Gentile convert,

  349. came to faith in Jesus.

  350. It says,

  351. people heard him

  352. speaking in tongues

  353. and extolling God.

  354. So in Acts,

  355. we see that

  356. this was a sort of reversal

  357. of the confusion

  358. that resulted from

  359. the Tower of Babel

  360. when people in their pride

  361. tried to build a tower

  362. to heaven

  363. and God confused

  364. their languages

  365. and when God sent

  366. the Holy Spirit

  367. as people were praying

  368. and humbly waiting on God,

  369. there was a reversal

  370. of that curse

  371. and a sign of the gospel

  372. going to all nations.

  373. Now that seems to be

  374. what's going on

  375. with tongues

  376. primarily in the book of Acts

  377. because when people

  378. speak in tongues

  379. in the book of Acts,

  380. you don't see

  381. every single Christian

  382. speaking in tongues

  383. in the book of Acts,

  384. but you do see

  385. as the gospel moves outward

  386. in Jerusalem

  387. on the day of Pentecost,

  388. then to Samaria,

  389. then to the Gentiles,

  390. then to the province

  391. of Asia and Ephesus,

  392. you see groups of people

  393. who speak in tongues

  394. as an expression

  395. of the Holy Spirit's work.

  396. So in Acts,

  397. it seems to be

  398. speaking in human languages

  399. that people haven't learned.

  400. But is that always

  401. what tongues is?

  402. And the answer

  403. would seem to be no.

  404. If you look again

  405. at 1 Corinthians 13,

    1 Corinthians 13:1

  406. verse 1,

  407. Paul refers to

  408. the tongues of men

  409. and of angels.

  410. Now that's the only reference

  411. to speaking in

  412. angelic languages

  413. in Scripture

  414. so we shouldn't

  415. build too much

  416. on one reference,

  417. but it seems to be

  418. at least a possibility

  419. in Paul's mind.

  420. And also,

  421. in this chapter

  422. we're reading,

  423. 1 Corinthians 14,

  424. Paul's writing

  425. to a church

  426. that included people

  427. from many different

  428. languages

  429. and cultural backgrounds.

  430. But he doesn't say,

  431. sure,

  432. go ahead and speak

  433. in tongues

  434. because maybe

  435. your international neighbor

  436. will understand you

  437. speaking in their own language.

  438. Paul assumes

  439. that if someone

  440. speaks in tongues,

  441. probably nobody's

  442. going to understand them

  443. unless somebody has

  444. what he calls

  445. a gift of interpretation.

  446. So Paul doesn't

  447. seem to be assuming

  448. that tongues

  449. are always

  450. foreign human languages.

  451. It seems like

  452. they could be

  453. human languages,

  454. they could be

  455. some kind of

  456. heavenly languages,

  457. or perhaps even

  458. something else.

  459. There's one other verse

  460. that makes a similar point

  461. in the New Testament

  462. that believers

  463. can at times

  464. communicate to God

  465. in prayer,

  466. in the power

  467. of the Holy Spirit

  468. in a way that

  469. goes beyond

  470. normal human language.

  471. If you look at Romans

    Romans 8:26

  472. chapter 8,

  473. verse 26,

  474. Paul says,

  475. likewise,

  476. the Spirit,

  477. the Holy Spirit

  478. helps us

  479. in our weakness.

  480. For we do not know

  481. what to pray for

  482. as we ought,

  483. but the Spirit himself

  484. intercedes for us

  485. with groanings

  486. too deep

  487. for words.

  488. Now groanings

  489. isn't exactly

  490. the same thing

  491. as tongues,

  492. but it's similar.

  493. It's the idea

  494. that in our human weakness,

  495. in our perplexity,

  496. when we don't know

  497. what to pray,

  498. the Holy Spirit

  499. can prompt us

  500. to pray to God

  501. in a way that goes

  502. beyond normal

  503. human words.

  504. Sometimes we might

  505. not understand

  506. exactly what we're

  507. praying for

  508. or what we need,

  509. but God hears

  510. and God knows.

  511. And we put it all

  512. in his hands.

  513. So I think

  514. that's what tongues is.

  515. Speaking to God

  516. in a language

  517. that's not

  518. normally understood

  519. by the person

  520. who's speaking

  521. or the people

  522. who might be hearing.

  523. Second,

  524. the benefits

  525. of speaking in tongues.

  526. Paul describes

  527. some benefits

  528. of speaking in tongues

  529. in this chapter.

  530. Verse 4,

  531. he says,

  532. the one who speaks

  533. in a tongue

  534. builds up himself.

  535. Some people have wondered,

  536. is Paul being sarcastic there?

  537. All you people

  538. speaking in tongues,

  539. you're just building

  540. yourself up,

  541. puffing yourself up,

  542. rather than building

  543. up the church.

  544. But I don't think

  545. that's what Paul's doing.

  546. In Jude,

  547. actually,

  548. Jude 20,

  549. says,

  550. build yourselves up

  551. in your most holy faith

  552. and pray in the Holy Spirit.

  553. And in the very next verse,

  554. verse 5,

  555. Paul says,

  556. I want you all

  557. to speak in tongues.

  558. Now,

  559. that was a favorite verse

  560. when I was growing up

  561. in the Pentecostal church.

  562. I want you all

  563. to speak in tongues.

  564. I heard a few sermons

  565. on that one.

  566. Now,

  567. the emphasis

  568. is actually

  569. the second half

  570. of the verse

  571. where Paul says,

  572. but even more,

  573. to prophesy.

  574. And it's also possible

  575. to translate verse 5,

  576. I'm willing

  577. or I'm happy

  578. for you all

  579. to speak in tongues.

  580. Paul isn't saying

  581. that every Christian

  582. must speak in tongues.

  583. But he is saying

  584. that speaking in tongues

  585. can be personally edifying.

  586. In fact,

  587. in verse 18,

  588. Paul says,

  589. I speak in tongues

  590. more than you all do.

  591. He wouldn't say that

  592. if he thought

  593. that speaking in tongues

  594. was just foolish

  595. and useless.

  596. So it's true,

  597. tongues can be abused

  598. or overemphasized

  599. or wrongly made

  600. into the measure

  601. of spiritual maturity.

  602. That was happening

  603. in Corinth,

  604. but Paul's response

  605. was not

  606. to prohibit tongues

  607. and get rid of them.

  608. In fact,

  609. in verse 39,

  610. he says,

  611. don't forbid

  612. speaking in tongues.

  613. So let me encourage you,

  614. if you've had bad experiences

  615. in the charismatic movement,

  616. don't react

  617. by throwing everything out,

  618. throwing the baby out

  619. with the bathwater,

  620. as they say.

  621. All right,

  622. Paul says,

  623. don't forbid

  624. speaking in tongues.

  625. Now,

  626. some of you might say,

  627. well,

  628. but help me understand,

  629. how could it be

  630. spiritually beneficial

  631. to pray

  632. in a way that

  633. I don't even know

  634. what I'm saying?

  635. Well,

  636. let me say this.

  637. it seems that God may

  638. and sometimes does

  639. edify individual believers

  640. in ways that transcend

  641. our rational,

  642. cognitive processes.

  643. And that our spirits,

  644. indwelt by the Holy Spirit,

  645. can sometimes respond to God

  646. in ways that

  647. can't completely fit

  648. in our rational,

  649. cognitive processes

  650. through groanings

  651. that words can't express

  652. or tongues

  653. that our minds

  654. can't understand.

  655. And maybe this is meant

  656. to humble us,

  657. just to remind us

  658. that God is far greater

  659. than our minds

  660. can conceive.

  661. Sam Storms,

  662. who happens to be

  663. the new president

  664. of the Evangelical

  665. Theological Society,

  666. no scholarly lightweight,

  667. wrote about his experience

  668. of praying in tongues.

  669. And he said,

  670. I found this gift

  671. profoundly helpful

  672. to my prayer life.

  673. It doesn't diminish

  674. one's capacity

  675. for rational thought

  676. or one's commitment

  677. to the authority

  678. of the written word

  679. of God.

  680. It has served only

  681. to deepen my intimacy

  682. with the Lord Jesus Christ

  683. and to enhance

  684. my zeal

  685. and joy

  686. in worship.

  687. Those are some benefits

  688. of speaking in tongues.

  689. But Paul also points out

  690. some dangers

  691. of speaking in tongues.

  692. This is what Paul addresses

  693. in verses 6 to 11.

  694. Verse 6,

  695. he says,

  696. If I come to you

  697. speaking in tongues,

  698. how will I benefit you?

  699. It seems like some

  700. of the Corinthians

  701. wanted Paul to come

  702. and basically put on a show

  703. to show how spiritual

  704. he was by displaying

  705. his gift

  706. of speaking

  707. in tongues.

  708. And Paul

  709. had refused.

  710. Paul said back

  711. in 1 Corinthians 2,

  712. When I came to you,

  713. I didn't come

  714. proclaiming to you

  715. the mystery of God

  716. with lofty speech

  717. or wisdom.

  718. And he didn't come

  719. and stand up front

  720. and put on a public display

  721. of all his speaking

  722. in tongues.

  723. He said,

  724. I came and I proclaim

  725. Christ and him crucified

  726. with weakness

  727. and fear

  728. and trembling.

  729. You see,

  730. in this whole chapter,

  731. Paul places no restrictions

  732. on speaking in tongues

  733. privately.

  734. But he says,

  735. There are some things

  736. that are wonderful

  737. to do when you're alone,

  738. but aren't always

  739. so helpful

  740. when you're gathered

  741. with God's people.

  742. Sometimes,

  743. several years ago,

  744. I used to drive

  745. up to Boston a lot.

  746. I was taking seminary

  747. classes part-time up there.

  748. And before my wife

  749. and I were married,

  750. she was living up there.

  751. And sometimes,

  752. I would be driving

  753. back late at night.

  754. And sometimes,

  755. I would sing and pray

  756. at the top of my lungs

  757. in my car.

  758. It helped me stay awake.

  759. It helped me intercede

  760. for people.

  761. I was probably releasing

  762. all kinds of emotions

  763. to God.

  764. And I wasn't bothering

  765. anybody.

  766. I was edifying myself.

  767. But if I walked

  768. into church

  769. and immediately started

  770. yelling at the top

  771. of my lungs,

  772. prayer and praise to God,

  773. I wouldn't be loving you all.

  774. Paul wants us all

  775. to ask the question

  776. that he asked in verse 6.

  777. How can I benefit you?

  778. And this is a principle

  779. that applies much more

  780. broadly than tongues.

  781. Not, Paul's saying,

  782. the question is not,

  783. how can I display

  784. my gifts in the church

  785. and be recognized

  786. for them?

  787. The question is,

  788. how can I benefit you

  789. even if that means

  790. restraining myself

  791. in some ways?

  792. And so,

  793. Paul's point here

  794. is that speaking in tongues

  795. without interpretation

  796. publicly

  797. isn't beneficial

  798. because the hearers

  799. won't benefit

  800. from what they can't understand.

  801. Verse 7 to 11,

  802. Paul uses three analogies

  803. to make the point.

  804. Musical instruments

  805. only produce pleasing melodies

  806. if they're played

  807. according to some kind

  808. of orderly pattern, right?

  809. If the musicians

  810. all came up here

  811. and just started playing

  812. on their own

  813. without listening to each other,

  814. we would not have

  815. a very pleasant worship service

  816. this morning.

  817. The Corinthian church

  818. sort of sounded like that,

  819. like the sympathy orchestra

  820. when they're all tuning

  821. their instruments

  822. before the conductor

  823. comes on stage.

  824. They're all doing

  825. their own thing,

  826. making a ton of noise

  827. and nobody quite knows

  828. what's going on.

  829. Verse 8,

  830. Paul says,

  831. the military trumpet

  832. only works

  833. in rousing the troops

  834. to battle

  835. if the sounds are distinct

  836. and isn't that part

  837. of why we gather together

  838. as a church?

  839. You know,

  840. we're fighting

  841. a spiritual battle

  842. every day of our lives

  843. and part of why

  844. we come together

  845. is to be equipped

  846. and empowered

  847. to fight that battle

  848. for Christ

  849. and know the power

  850. of the Holy Spirit

  851. being with us.

  852. So Paul says,

  853. we need to hear

  854. a clear and distinct message

  855. in order to be equipped

  856. for that.

  857. Verse 10, 11,

  858. Paul uses the analogy

  859. of foreign languages.

  860. You know,

  861. if I suddenly start

  862. preaching in French,

  863. just because I happen

  864. to know French

  865. and I think French

  866. is a beautiful language,

  867. I'll alienate most of you

  868. right away.

  869. Paul says,

  870. so with yourselves.

  871. We are brothers

  872. and sisters in Christ.

  873. In the world,

  874. we're foreigners

  875. and aliens.

  876. You might feel out of,

  877. I mean,

  878. we should feel out of place

  879. in this world.

  880. But Paul says,

  881. when we come together

  882. as a church,

  883. this is our home.

  884. This is a foretaste

  885. of where our true home

  886. is in heaven.

  887. And when we come to church,

  888. we should help each other

  889. and remind each other

  890. that you belong.

  891. If you believe in Christ,

  892. you belong.

  893. So Paul says,

  894. don't alienate each other

  895. by how you're behaving.

  896. Again,

  897. this principle applies

  898. much more widely

  899. than speaking in tongues.

  900. There's all kinds of ways

  901. you can speak

  902. in ways that people

  903. can't understand

  904. even if you speak in English.

  905. church.

  906. And Paul wants you

  907. to ask,

  908. how can I speak

  909. in a way that can benefit

  910. you,

  911. whoever you're speaking to

  912. or speaking with?

  913. That's why Paul says,

  914. strive to excel

  915. in building up the church.

  916. You know,

  917. when we gather together

  918. here,

  919. the reason we've come together,

  920. it's not like

  921. we're all supposed

  922. to come here

  923. and sit here

  924. and get out our phones

  925. and connect to the same website

  926. and be really excited

  927. that we're connected

  928. to this really cool website.

  929. Okay,

  930. we're not,

  931. we haven't come here

  932. to have 200 individual

  933. private experiences

  934. of the same God.

  935. We've come here

  936. to actually be together

  937. in the presence of God

  938. and build one another up.

  939. Like,

  940. just like the deacons

  941. are looking at those walls

  942. that have had some roof leaks

  943. and they've arranged

  944. to fix the roof leaks,

  945. thankfully,

  946. so there's no,

  947. the plaster's not going

  948. to keep breaking down,

  949. but they,

  950. some of them come in

  951. on Saturday night

  952. and make sure

  953. that there isn't plaster

  954. that's going to fall down

  955. as you're walking down

  956. the right aisle on Sunday.

  957. Right,

  958. they're keeping,

  959. keeping track

  960. of the facilities

  961. and helping to build up

  962. the,

  963. keep the facilities moving well

  964. so we can meet here

  965. and Paul says,

  966. build up the church community.

  967. Right,

  968. just as the building deacons

  969. build up,

  970. take care of the building,

  971. Paul says,

  972. we should all take care

  973. of each other.

  974. Let me give one example

  975. of this before we go

  976. on to prophecy

  977. that I experienced recently.

  978. A few weeks ago

  979. I was at a Bible study

  980. and a few of us

  981. were praying in turn

  982. for someone who had shared

  983. a particular need

  984. with a group

  985. and one person began praying

  986. and in the middle

  987. of her prayer

  988. she launched into

  989. praying in tongues

  990. and I happen to know

  991. that this person

  992. is pretty passionate

  993. about praying in tongues

  994. but immediately

  995. she said,

  996. someone say something,

  997. someone else go ahead

  998. and pray.

  999. This person felt

  1000. the freedom

  1001. to pray in tongues

  1002. as she was interceding

1003. for a sister in Christ.

  1004. In the context

  1005. I thought that was

  1006. a good thing

  1007. but she was also

  1008. immediately aware

  1009. that it would be

  1010. unhelpful for her

1011. to just go on and on

  1012. praying in a way

  1013. that no one else

  1014. could understand

  1015. and so she was

  1016. immediately asking

  1017. for someone else

  1018. to jump in

  1019. and pray

  1020. in a way that

  1021. everyone could understand

  1022. while she continued

  1023. praying in tongues

  1024. quietly

  1025. and unobtrusively.

  1026. I think that's

  1027. an example

  1028. I think it looks

  1029. different in different

  1030. places

  1031. but I think that's

  1032. an example

  1033. of someone

  1034. who loves

  1035. speaking in tongues

  1036. but who had learned

  1037. and was learning

  1038. to consider

  1039. the others around

  1040. them

  1041. and be loving

  1042. to them.

  1043. Alright,

  1044. so that's tongues

  1045. now we go on

  1046. to prophecy

  1047. again prophecy

  1048. we'll look at

  1049. the nature of prophecy

  1050. the benefits

  1051. and the dangers

  1052. so the nature

  1053. of prophecy

1054. go back to verse 3

  1055. Paul says

  1056. the one who prophesies

  1057. speaks to people

  1058. tongues is primarily

  1059. directed toward God

  1060. a form of prayer

  1061. prophecy is primarily

  1062. directed toward people

  1063. verse 3

  1064. Paul explains

  1065. the purpose of prophecy

  1066. for building us up

  1067. as a united people

  1068. of God

  1069. for emboldening

  1070. and equipping us

  1071. for every good work

  1072. and for consoling

  1073. or comforting

  1074. people who are

  1075. grieving

  1076. or depressed

  1077. or hurting

  1078. now I think

  1079. it's likely

  1080. that when Paul

  1081. talks about prophecy

  1082. in this chapter

  1083. he's using it

  1084. sort of as shorthand

  1085. for various kinds

  1086. of intelligible

  1087. speaking gifts

  1088. instead of every time

  1089. saying prophecy

  1090. teaching revelation

  1091. or knowledge

  1092. he just says prophecy

1093. but it's sort of meant

  1094. to have a broader

  1095. reference

  1096. because if you look

  1097. at verse 1

  1098. he says

  1099. desire especially

  1100. that you may prophesy

1101. but then in verse 6

  1102. he says

1103. how will I benefit you

  1104. unless I bring you

  1105. some revelation

  1106. or knowledge

  1107. or prophecy

  1108. or teaching

  1109. I don't think

  1110. Paul is saying

  1111. desire especially

  1112. to prophesy

  1113. and not so much

  1114. to teach

  1115. or speak words

  1116. of knowledge

  1117. he's contrasting

  1118. prophecy

  1119. that is intelligible

  1120. speech

  1121. with tongues

  1122. that is unintelligible

  1123. speech

  1124. and Jesus is pleased

  1125. if we speak intelligible

  1126. understandable words

  1127. to one another

  1128. whether they fall

  1129. into the category

  1130. of prophecy

  1131. or teaching

  1132. or knowledge

  1133. or wisdom

  1134. I think the reason

  1135. Paul refers

  1136. to those different gifts

  1137. is that speaking

  1138. to one another

  1139. in an edifying

  1140. and encouraging

  1141. and comforting way

  1142. takes a variety

  1143. of different forms

  1144. right

  1145. it can be prepared

  1146. you can prepare

  1147. you can prepare

  1148. a teaching

  1149. or you might have

  1150. a thought that comes

  1151. to mind spontaneously

  1152. that's helpful

  1153. and edifying

1154. to share with somebody else

  1155. it could be

  1156. focused on explanation

  1157. teaching seems to be

  1158. focused more on explanation

  1159. or could be more

  1160. of an occasional

  1161. exhortation

  1162. having said

  1163. so I think

  1164. these words

  1165. can apply more broadly

  1166. to a variety

  1167. of speaking gifts

  1168. but having said that

1169. let me say a few words

  1170. about prophecy

  1171. in particular

  1172. as compared

  1173. to other speaking gifts

  1174. like teaching

1175. so when the New Testament

  1176. talks about teaching

  1177. it mostly means

  1178. preserving sound doctrine

  1179. protecting the church

  1180. against false

  1181. and harmful ways

  1182. of thinking

  1183. and living

1184. and so a good teacher

  1185. can explain

  1186. what Christians believe

  1187. and how Christians

  1188. should live

  1189. and where that's found

  1190. in the Bible

  1191. now prophecy

  1192. is a little different

  1193. what seems to be

  1194. distinct about prophecy

  1195. compared to teaching

  1196. or other speaking gifts

1197. is that it's based on

  1198. what Paul calls

  1199. a revelation

  1200. if you look down

  1201. at verse 30

  1202. he talks about that

  1203. and by revelation here

  1204. he means

  1205. an insight

  1206. given

  1207. by the Holy Spirit

  1208. so a few examples

  1209. of New Testament prophecy

  1210. sometimes

  1211. it's an insight

  1212. into another person's

  1213. spiritual condition

1214. if you read in Acts 13

  1215. Paul perceived

  1216. by the power

1217. he said he was full

  1218. of the Holy Spirit

  1219. he perceived

  1220. that this guy

  1221. Elymas

  1222. a magician

  1223. was full of deceit

  1224. and wickedness

  1225. and so he gave

  1226. a strong rebuke

  1227. and God used

  1228. that word of rebuke

  1229. sometimes prophecy

  1230. excuse me

  1231. is an insight

  1232. of an upcoming

  1233. danger

  1234. so the prophet Agabus

  1235. in Acts 11

  1236. warned of an upcoming

  1237. imminent famine

  1238. and the believers

  1239. responded by sending

  1240. material help

  1241. to the believers

  1242. in Jerusalem

  1243. who are going to

  1244. experience that famine

  1245. at other times

  1246. it's an insight

  1247. into what exactly

  1248. the body of Christ

  1249. needs

  1250. to hear

  1251. at a particular

  1252. time

  1253. in a particular

  1254. place

  1255. so in his commentary

  1256. on 1 Corinthians

  1257. John Calvin wrote this

  1258. he said

  1259. prophets

  1260. were those who were

  1261. blessed with the

  1262. unique gift

  1263. of dealing with

  1264. scripture

  1265. not only by

  1266. interpreting it

  1267. but by making it

  1268. meet the needs

  1269. of the hour

  1270. they were endowed

  1271. with extraordinary

  1272. wisdom for recognizing

  1273. the immediate need

  1274. of the church

  1275. and speaking the

  1276. right words

  1277. to meet it

  1278. you see the church

  1279. needs Bible teachers

  1280. who can explain

  1281. and expound

  1282. the scriptures

  1283. the church also

  1284. needs prophets

  1285. who can discern

  1286. the particular

  1287. needs of our times

  1288. and speak directly

  1289. and powerfully

  1290. in accordance

  1291. with the scripture

  1292. to them

  1293. some of the benefits

  1294. of prophecy

  1295. Sam Storm

  1296. summarizes these

  1297. so he says

  1298. prophetic utterances

  1299. can

  1300. as verse 3 says

  1301. edify

  1302. exhort

  1303. and console

  1304. they may bring

  1305. conviction

  1306. as the secrets

  1307. of a sinner's heart

  1308. are exposed

  1309. verse 24 and 25

  1310. in this chapter

  1311. they may teach

  1312. verse 31

  1313. says we can learn

  1314. from prophecies

  1315. they may give

  1316. direction for ministry

  1317. Acts 13

  1318. 1-3

  1319. they may contain

  1320. warnings

  1321. Acts 21

  1322. 10-11

  1323. or present

  1324. opportunities

  1325. for ministry

  1326. they may even

  1327. identify and impart

  1328. spiritual gifts

  1329. 1 Timothy 4-14

  1330. if you want those

  1331. references I can

  1332. give them to you

  1333. later

  1334. so you see

  1335. Paul is saying

  1336. prophecy has

  1337. many benefits

  1338. and that's why

  1339. he's so eager

  1340. for us

  1341. he says

  1342. earnestly desire

  1343. the spiritual gifts

  1344. especially

  1345. that you may

  1346. prophesy

  1347. earnestly desire

  1348. them because

  1349. God earnestly

  1350. desires to bless

  1351. his church

  1352. with them

  1353. in the Old Testament

  1354. Moses longed for

  1355. the day

  1356. he said

  1357. I wish that

  1358. all the Lord's

  1359. people

  1360. were prophets

  1361. and the prophet

  1362. Joel looked forward

  1363. to the day

  1364. Joel said

  1365. one day

  1366. I will pour out

  1367. my spirit

  1368. on all flesh

  1369. and your sons

  1370. and daughters

  1371. will prophesy

  1372. both men and

  1373. women

  1374. and your old men

  1375. will dream dreams

  1376. and your young men

  1377. will see visions

  1378. young and old

  1379. even on my servants

  1380. both male and

  1381. female

  1382. servants were

  1383. sort of

  1384. the poor

  1385. in that day

  1386. the lowest class

  1387. the least well

  1388. educated

  1389. Paul said

  1390. I'm going to

  1391. speak through

  1392. all my people

  1393. so that

  1394. my people

  1395. can be built up

  1396. and my name

  1397. can be praised

  1398. in the world

  1399. and on the day

  1400. of Pentecost

  1401. Peter proclaimed

  1402. that prophecy

  1403. has been fulfilled

  1404. when the Holy Spirit

  1405. was poured out

  1406. on the church

  1407. Paul wants us

  1408. to desire these

  1409. earnestly desire

  1410. these gifts

  1411. because God

  1412. has promised

  1413. to give them

  1414. to us

  1415. for our good

1416. so let me say this

  1417. let me challenge us

  1418. especially

  1419. if you've come

  1420. from

  1421. let's say

  1422. a non-Pentecostal

  1423. charismatic background

  1424. right

  1425. or in a

  1426. church like Trinity

  1427. that's

  1428. that's not

  1429. a Pentecostal

  1430. church

  1431. right

  1432. do we earnestly

  1433. desire the spiritual

  1434. gifts that Paul

  1435. describes here

  1436. do we desire

  1437. especially to prophesy

  1438. that is

  1439. or more broadly

  1440. to speak

  1441. edifying

  1442. encouraging

  1443. comforting

  1444. words to one

  1445. another

  1446. do we pray

  1447. that the Holy Spirit

  1448. would give us insight

  1449. when we see someone

  1450. who needs encouragement

1451. or when we see someone

  1452. a brother or sister

  1453. in Christ

  1454. who's

  1455. falling into sin

  1456. or when we

  1457. are facing a difficult

  1458. situation

  1459. we just don't know

  1460. what to do

  1461. do we pray

  1462. Holy Spirit

  1463. give us the insight

  1464. that we need

  1465. of course

  1466. part of how

  1467. the Holy Spirit

  1468. does that

  1469. is pointing us

  1470. to the scriptures

  1471. but sometimes

  1472. there are things

  1473. that the Holy Spirit

  1474. can sort of highlight

  1475. as being particularly

  1476. beneficial for us

  1477. at a given moment

  1478. you know

  1479. if you're teaching

  1480. in a Bible study

  1481. pray that the Lord

  1482. would not only

  1483. give you insight

  1484. into the scriptures

  1485. but also insight

  1486. into what your group

  1487. needs to hear

  1488. at the present time

  1489. in order to more

  1490. effectively glorify God

  1491. James 4 says

  1492. sometimes

  1493. he says

  1494. James 4 says

  1495. you don't have

1496. because you don't ask God

  1497. and that can sometimes

1498. be true of spiritual gifts

  1499. yes the Lord

  1500. sovereignly distributes

1501. the gifts as he pleases

  1502. but he also says

1503. ask for what we need

1504. ask for what would be

  1505. most beneficial

  1506. so I think

  1507. Richard Hayes says this

  1508. the church that ponders

  1509. 1 Corinthians 14

  1510. seriously

1511. will be led to pray

1512. for the gift of prophecy

  1513. and to welcome it

  1514. when it's given

  1515. so those are some

  1516. of the benefits

  1517. of prophecy

  1518. finally

  1519. dangers

  1520. of prophecy

1521. this is the last section

  1522. I know it's hot

  1523. hang in there

  1524. we said early

  1525. I'm sweating too

  1526. we said earlier

  1527. that prophecy

  1528. is based on

  1529. a revelation

  1530. that is an insight

1531. given by the Holy Spirit

1532. but here is the danger

1533. and we need to hear

  1534. this danger

  1535. a genuine insight

  1536. given by God

  1537. may be combined

  1538. with erroneous

  1539. human assumptions

  1540. for an example

  1541. of this

  1542. you can look at

  1543. Acts 21

  1544. now we preached

  1545. on Acts 21

  1546. about a year ago

  1547. I'm not going to

  1548. repeat the whole sermon

  1549. you can read it

1550. you can listen to it

  1551. on the website

  1552. but in Acts 21

    Acts 21:4

  1553. verse 4

  1554. it says

  1555. through the spirit

  1556. the Christians

  1557. Christians at Tyre

  1558. were urging Paul

  1559. not to go on

  1560. to Jerusalem

  1561. and if you read

  1562. the passage

  1563. what's going on

  1564. is they rightly

  1565. discerned

  1566. I think this is

  1567. the insight

  1568. from the Holy Spirit

  1569. that there would be

  1570. danger awaiting

  1571. Paul in Jerusalem

  1572. they wrongly

  1573. concluded

  1574. that because

  1575. there would be

  1576. danger

  1577. therefore Paul

  1578. should not go

  1579. and Paul rightly

  1580. disregarded

  1581. there

  1582. what they

  1583. would have thought

1584. was a word of prophecy

  1585. so it's interesting

  1586. the apostle Paul

  1587. did not always listen

  1588. to everyone

  1589. who said

  1590. I have a word of prophecy

  1591. for you

  1592. in fact

  1593. sometimes he did

  1594. the opposite

  1595. he used discernment

  1596. there's only one place

  1597. where the Holy Spirit

  1598. has revealed himself

  1599. through human

  1600. spokespersons

  1601. and without human error

  1602. and that is

  1603. in this book

  1604. in the scriptures

  1605. and the scriptures

  1606. are our final authority

  1607. in faith

  1608. and practice

  1609. and so prophecy

  1610. in the sense

1611. that I'm using the word

  1612. in the sense

  1613. that I think

1614. Paul is using the word

  1615. in 1 Corinthians 14

  1616. and in the sense

  1617. that it seems

1618. to be most commonly used

  1619. throughout the New Testament

1620. is not the same thing

  1621. as

  1622. God's word

  1623. without error

  1624. and infallible

  1625. okay

  1626. and this is why

  1627. the New Testament

  1628. tells us

  1629. we need to test

  1630. prophecies

  1631. it doesn't say

  1632. just listen to anyone

1633. who claims to be a prophet

1634. or even who has spoken

  1635. a word of prophecy

  1636. before

  1637. that has come true

  1638. 1 Thessalonians 5

  1639. don't despise prophecies

  1640. again

  1641. don't rule them out

  1642. but test everything

  1643. hold fast

  1644. what is good

  1645. and abstain

  1646. from every form

  1647. of evil

  1648. so prophecies

  1649. or more broadly

  1650. any word of advice

  1651. or warning

  1652. or encouragement

  1653. from a fellow believer

  1654. must be carefully

  1655. evaluated

  1656. and discerned

  1657. so let me speak

  1658. to you briefly

1659. if you have the gift

  1660. of prophecy

  1661. some people have

  1662. the gift of prophecy

1663. and they don't call it prophecy

  1664. but perhaps

  1665. the Lord

  1666. seems to give you

  1667. insight

  1668. into spiritual dangers

  1669. or ministry opportunities

  1670. or even into

1671. what seems to be going on

  1672. in someone's heart

  1673. like we see

1674. in the book of Acts

  1675. that can be

  1676. a genuine

  1677. and very useful gift

  1678. from God

  1679. but be careful

  1680. because recognize

1681. that while the Holy Spirit

  1682. may give you insights

  1683. you might not always

  1684. see the whole picture

  1685. and so submit

  1686. the way you can

  1687. express it helpfully

  1688. is submit your insights

  1689. to the discernment

  1690. of godly spiritual leaders

  1691. and the Christian community

  1692. as a whole

  1693. if you are on

  1694. the receiving end

1695. of a word of prophecy

1696. or a strong word of advice

  1697. or warning

  1698. from a fellow believer

  1699. take it seriously

  1700. consider

  1701. if there are important

1702. insights from the Holy Spirit

1703. that you should take to heart

  1704. but test it

  1705. against God's word

  1706. someone else's advice

  1707. even someone else's prophecy

1708. is not the same thing

  1709. as an absolute command

  1710. from God

1711. if you look in this chapter

  1712. verse 37

  1713. Paul distinguishes

  1714. prophecy

  1715. from

  1716. what

  1717. what he's

  1718. from his writings

  1719. which he says

1720. are a command of the Lord

  1721. now let me say

  1722. one other thing

  1723. about prophecy

  1724. before we conclude

  1725. sometimes Christians

  1726. experience very similar things

  1727. but call them

  1728. by very different names

  1729. so some Christians

  1730. will say

  1731. I had a revelation

  1732. the Lord gave me

  1733. a word for you

  1734. I think the Lord

  1735. was speaking to me

  1736. other Christians

  1737. might say

  1738. I had a feeling

1739. or I had an impression

  1740. I felt a conviction

  1741. or an urge

  1742. or a burden

  1743. or a resolution

1744. or I was reading scripture

  1745. and this passage

  1746. just

1747. I just wanted to share

  1748. this passage with you

  1749. now the language

  1750. seems very different

  1751. but the experience

  1752. is sometimes

  1753. more similar

  1754. than we realize

  1755. right

  1756. if you're in a Pentecostal

  1757. coming from a Pentecostal

  1758. background

  1759. you might say

  1760. I have a revelation

  1761. right

  1762. I've got a word

  1763. if you're coming from

  1764. a Presbyterian

  1765. or a traditional

  1766. Baptist background

  1767. you won't say that

  1768. right

  1769. but it doesn't mean

  1770. that the Holy Spirit

1771. isn't doing the same things

  1772. because every Christian

  1773. Pentecostal

  1774. Presbyterian

  1775. Baptist

  1776. on denomination

  1777. or whatever you are

  1778. has the Holy Spirit

  1779. living in us

  1780. and the Holy Spirit

  1781. working through us

  1782. well we've talked a lot

  1783. about how prophecy

  1784. edifies the church

  1785. but one more pattern

1786. I think we can see

  1787. is that gifts

  1788. like prophecy

  1789. and miracles

  1790. and healings

  1791. are often most prevalent

  1792. when the gospel

  1793. is moving outward

  1794. when God's people

  1795. are crossing

  1796. cultural

  1797. national

  1798. and social boundaries

  1799. when we're

  1800. going to unfamiliar

  1801. even dangerous places

1802. for the sake of Christ

  1803. when we're engaging

  1804. people from cultures

  1805. and backgrounds

  1806. that are hostile

  1807. to Christianity

  1808. when we get stretched

  1809. to the limits

  1810. of our human capacities

  1811. we feel our dependence

  1812. on the Lord

  1813. more acutely

1814. we know that we need

  1815. the Lord

  1816. we need his presence

  1817. we need his power

  1818. we need his wisdom

  1819. otherwise we know

1820. it's all going to flop

  1821. and so we pray

  1822. more earnestly

  1823. and fervently

  1824. maybe even with groans

  1825. that words can't express

1826. and in those very situations

1827. the Lord tends to show up

  1828. in unmistakable ways

1829. he gives us the words

  1830. we need to speak

1831. he gives us the patience

  1832. to endure opposition

  1833. he demonstrates his glory

  1834. through deeds of power

1835. because what he's doing there

  1836. is he's not just

  1837. building the church

  1838. with the people

  1839. who are already here

1840. but he's building the church

  1841. by bringing people in

1842. who are going to become

  1843. part of it

1844. let me close with one story

  1845. about how God uses

  1846. the gift of prophecy

  1847. or something like it

  1848. in a situation where

  1849. I think people wouldn't have

  1850. even called it that

1851. or realized what was happening

1852. but God used it powerfully

1853. to bring someone to himself

1854. and he even used kids

1855. let me close with this story

  1856. several years ago

  1857. I was a counselor

1858. at a Christian hockey camp

  1859. during the summers

  1860. one of the coaches

1861. was a guy named Bill Butters

1862. he had played in the NHL

  1863. for a few years

  1864. in the 70s

1865. and he was what is known

1866. in hockey as an enforcer

  1867. which means he had

  1868. far more penalty minutes

  1869. for roughing and fighting

  1870. than goals or assists

1871. he was a tough guy

  1872. he was angry

  1873. he was volatile

  1874. he had no interest

  1875. in religion

1876. he had some terrible experiences

  1877. in churches

1878. when he was a kid

1879. but one of his buddies

  1880. invited him to volunteer

1881. at this Christian hockey camp

1882. the first Christian hockey camp

  1883. in the United States

  1884. back in 1980

1885. and at first he said

  1886. I have no interest

  1887. in this Christian stuff

  1888. first he said

1889. how much are you going to pay me

  1890. the guy said

  1891. well it's a Christian camp

  1892. the coaches all volunteer

  1893. and he said

1894. you've got to be kidding

1895. the guy just kept pestering him

  1896. and he came

  1897. because he literally

  1898. he said

  1899. I don't even know why I came

1900. I literally had nothing to do

1901. now right before he came

  1902. to the camp

  1903. he didn't tell anybody

  1904. this at the camp

  1905. except I think

  1906. his close friend knew

1907. but he didn't tell anybody

1908. else at the camp this

1909. he had just got cut

  1910. from his team

  1911. told he wouldn't play

  1912. pro hockey ever again

1913. his marriage was falling apart

  1914. mostly because

1915. he had become an alcoholic

1916. and he had anger issues

1917. so he goes to the camp

  1918. first he says

1919. I'm just doing the on ice staff

  1920. forget the chapel stuff

1921. so that works for two or three days

1922. then one of the kids

1923. invites him to come to chapel

  1924. he goes to chapel

  1925. had an experience there

  1926. I'll skip that part

1927. but after the evening chapel

1928. the 12 year old boys

  1929. say

  1930. Coach Bill

1931. would you come to our huddle group

1932. this is where they would

  1933. like discuss

  1934. what was shared

  1935. at the chapel service

1936. and have a little bible discussion

1937. do a little prayer time

  1938. they say

1939. would you come with us

1940. of course you can't refuse

  1941. 12 year old kids

1942. at the end of the huddle group

  1943. he said

1944. each boy began to pray for me

1945. one prayed for a job

  1946. he had no idea

1947. I had just been cut from my team

1948. one prayed for peace in my life

  1949. he had no idea

1950. that my marriage was breaking apart

1951. one prayed that I might find joy

  1952. and happiness

  1953. he had no idea

1954. that I had turned to alcohol

  1955. in my despair

  1956. and finally

1957. one 12 year old boy

1958. prayed that I could know

  1959. Jesus Christ

1960. as my personal Lord and Savior

  1961. that night

1962. I got down on my knees

  1963. and asked Christ

  1964. into my life

1965. you see how the Holy Spirit

  1966. can use

  1967. 12 year old boys

  1968. probably don't even

  1969. wouldn't even call it

  1970. the gift of prophecy

1971. but he gave them insight

1972. into what to pray for

  1973. and use them

  1974. to lead this

  1975. tough

  1976. hardened

  1977. NHL player

  1978. to Christ

  1979. and then he worked

  1980. for this ministry

  1981. for the last

  1982. 30 years

1983. that's how I got to know him

  1984. let's pray

  1985. that the Lord

1986. would pour out his spirit

  1987. upon us

  1988. so this church

  1989. would be built

  1990. Holy Spirit

1991. we pray that you would

  1992. pour out

  1993. your presence

  1994. among us

  1995. and your gifts

  1996. among us

  1997. Lord we want to

  1998. earnestly desire them

  1999. we want to earnestly

  2000. desire every good gift

  2001. that you give

2002. for the good of your church

  2003. and for the glory

  2004. of your name

2005. we pray that you would

  2006. protect us

  2007. and forgive us

2008. for ways that we have

  2009. used gifts

  2010. in selfish

  2011. or self-promoting ways

  2012. or unedifying ways

  2013. Lord give us love

  2014. give us the love

  2015. that would

  2016. make us strive

  2017. to excel

  2018. in building up

  2019. your church

  2020. and we pray

  2021. that you would

  2022. use these gifts

  2023. Lord not only

  2024. to build up

  2025. one another

  2026. who are gathered here

  2027. but to bring in

  2028. the people

  2029. who would one day

2030. become part of your kingdom

  2031. and who would

  2032. worship you forever

  2033. and who would

  2034. join their voices

  2035. in the song

  2036. of praise

  2037. to Jesus Christ

  2038. the Lamb of God

  2039. pray these things

  2040. in Jesus name

  2041. Amen

  2042. Amen

  2043. Amen
