  1. Good evening, friends.

  2. We have before us this evening a difficult passage,

  3. so I'd like to invoke the Lord's help before we begin.

  4. Let's pray.

  5. Lord, I do pray that you would speak to us from your word

  6. and that you would clarify our confusions

  7. and that you would lead us into a deeper love of you

  8. through your words this evening.

  9. And I pray that you do with me

  10. the meditation of my heart and the words of my mouth

  11. would be acceptable to you.

  12. In the name of Jesus, I pray these things.

  13. Amen.

  14. Amen.

  15. How's it?

  16. Yeah.

  17. Hi, everybody.

  18. So, our passage this evening is Luke 14, verse 25 to 32.

    Luke 14:25–32

  19. You can turn there with me if you would.

  20. Luke 14, verses 25 through 32.

    Luke 14:25–32

  21. When I was a little boy and then in my teenage years as well,

  22. I had this vivid memory of living in this old sort of farmhouse.

  23. I moved from the city to a farmhouse.

  24. And no matter where we lived, every time I would go to bed at night,

  25. I remember one last thing.

  26. This was my dad walking around the house to lock all of the doors.

  27. And he would rattle every single door.

  28. And when I was young enough,

  29. I thought this was just the most heroically brave thing I could possibly imagine.

  30. This man not only locked up our house,

  31. but even locked up his office, which was in the dark out there.

  32. He went out every single night and locked up all of the doors.

  33. And then he'd come back in.

  34. And I understood this to be something like the epitome of fatherliness.

  35. To go around and make sure all of the entrances

  36. by which somebody could come in undesired were closed and secured.

  37. This to me was a down payment of my dad's love for his family

  38. and his desire that we'd be secure.

  39. He went around and he looked at all of the vulnerabilities in the house

  40. and secured them.

  41. The passage before us tonight is Jesus telling us to count the cost of following him.

  42. And I think another way of asking this question

  43. or thinking about this question of the cost of following Jesus

  44. is asking this question of,

  45. where are the vulnerabilities in our souls?

  46. Those things that we are particularly tempted toward?

  47. Where are the dangers that we ought to be on guard against?

  48. Because from those sides, danger might come.

  49. What are the things that we would be willing to trade Christ for?

  50. This is the question I want to have in the back of our minds as we read this text.

  51. Luke 14, verse 25 through 33.

    Luke 14:25–33

  52. Now great crowds accompanied him.

  53. And he, Jesus, turned and said to them,

  54. If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters,

  55. yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

  56. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

  57. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost,

  58. whether he has enough to complete it?

  59. Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish,

  60. all who see it begin to mock him, saying,

  61. This man began to build and was not able to finish.

  62. Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war,

  63. will not sit down first and deliberate,

  64. whether he is able with 10,000 to meet him who comes against him with 20,000.

  65. And if not, while the other is yet a great way off,

  66. he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

  67. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

  68. As I said, these are hard words.

  69. I think the main point of this passage

  70. is that we are to count the cost of following Jesus.

  71. So here's how I think this passage is working, just a broad overview.

  72. Jesus has got, notice, great crowds with him,

  73. and he says harsh words to great crowds.

  74. He's not interested only in getting a large audience.

  75. He's interested in people following him for the right reasons

  76. and understanding what it will cost them.

  77. So great crowds accompany him,

  78. and he turns and says to them,

  79. if anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife

  80. and children and brothers and sisters,

  81. yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

  82. The first thing, hate your family.

  83. We'll come back to that.

  84. Second thing, take up your cross and follow me.

  85. I think these two things are the things that are necessary for following Christ.

  86. And the rest of the passage is examples.

  87. So the foundation, the tower,

  88. is about preparing yourself beforehand before you begin a task.

  89. And the going to war against the other king

  90. is about preparing yourself beforehand before you go and undo a task.

  91. It's about making sure you're ready to do the thing you're going to commit to doing.

  92. And I think one of the ways we can judge our hearts

  93. and see if we're willing to pay the price of following Christ

  94. is to ask,

  95. what's the price we would pay to abandon him?

  96. Where are we most tempted to abandon him?

  97. Temptation.

  98. Temptation comes in all shapes and sizes

  99. and not every temptation is effective on every person.

  100. So I'll ask you the question,

  101. which door of your soul

  102. is the one through which the danger would come?

  103. The danger being forsaking Christ.

  104. What's that temptation?

  105. I think Jesus has an idea here

  106. of two big categories of temptations.

  107. Reasons we would be inclined to abandon and not follow Christ.

  108. I want to look at those two broad categories,

  109. say what it is that we have to give up in order to follow him,

  110. and then say how we can use these categories of things

  111. actually to wing our way toward God,

  112. to encourage us in our following of him.

  113. Okay?

  114. So, I suggest there are two main things

  115. that Jesus says gets in the way of our following him.

  116. Pleasures and pains.

  117. The pleasures of life,

  118. I think, are represented by the things

  119. Jesus tells us to hate.

  120. Look at the things he tells us.

  121. Mother and father,

  122. wife,

  123. children,

  124. even your own life.

  125. The natural question is,

  126. what's wrong with these things?

  127. And the correct response is,

  128. nothing's wrong with them.

  129. They're good things.

  130. They're joys.

  131. They are pleasures.

  132. But then why does Jesus tell us to hate them?

  133. I think it's because this is one direction from which danger might come.

  134. We might be tempted to enjoy these pleasures more than we enjoy Christ.

  135. Look also at the parable above ours here.

  136. Beginning in verse 15 there,

  137. you see this parable of a man who invites his friends to a banquet.

  138. And all of his friends give reasons why they can't come to this banquet.

  139. They say,

  140. oh, I've taken a wife and I can't do it.

  141. Oh, I have to do some business ventures and I can't do it.

  142. Again,

  143. these are all good things.

  144. So the question is,

  145. what's Jesus got against mother and father

  146. and brother and sister

  147. and children?

  148. I think he's aware that one of the dangers

  149. that would incline us away from following him

  150. is our pleasures.

  151. And the second category of things comes in the verse right afterwards.

  152. Take up your cross and follow me.

  153. If anyone's not willing to take up his cross,

  154. he can't follow me.

  155. Now,

  156. this phrase,

  157. take up your cross,

  158. has become a relatively common one.

  159. When we hear this phrase,

  160. take up your cross,

  161. we realize that we're talking in religious vocabulary.

  162. And I want to sort of get away from that idea a little bit.

  163. I want to give you a sense of just how strange this might sound

  164. to Jesus's hearers.

  165. Remember when Jesus said these words,

  166. he wasn't crucified yet.

  167. The cross didn't have any religious significance whatsoever.

  168. So read it like this.

  169. If anyone is not willing to take up,

  170. to strap himself into an electric chair,

  171. he won't follow me.

  172. If any man's not willing to blindfold himself

  173. in front of a firing squad,

  174. he can't follow me.

  175. If anyone's not willing to kneel down

  176. on the executioner's block

  177. before a person with an enormous sword

  178. is going to decapitate you,

  179. he's not ready to follow me.

  180. These are the sort of things that Jesus says

  181. are necessary for following him.

  182. I think what's going on here is Jesus is aware

  183. that one of the dangers

  184. from the other side

  185. is the danger of pains.

  186. The dangers of pleasures

  187. and the dangers of pains.

  188. These, I think, are the two broad categories

  189. that Jesus sees

  190. as being able to turn our affections

  191. away from him.

  192. What does it mean

  193. to hate these good things

  194. and to be willing to take up

  195. these bad things?

  196. Here's what I think it means.

  197. The life of following Jesus

  198. means that nothing else

  199. can evermore hold our highest allegiance.

  200. Nothing.

  201. Not family, not country,

  202. not political party,

  203. not even allegiance to our own life.

  204. Nothing.

  205. And the corollary,

  206. the implication of that is

  207. we cannot have lives designed

  208. to flee at all costs from pain.

  209. We cannot have lives

  210. that seek only the good

  211. of other allegiances

  212. and we cannot have lives

  213. that flee away from pain.

  214. If anyone would not take up his cross,

  215. he cannot be my disciple.

  216. If anyone does not hate his family,

  217. he cannot be my disciple.

  218. We have the problem of pleasures

  219. and the problem of pain.

  220. Jesus tells us

  221. that we are to count the cost

  222. of these things.

  223. And so what I want to do

  224. for the rest of our time together

  225. is ask the question,

  226. how can we use pleasures and pains

  227. in such a way

  228. that they do not steer us away from God,

  229. but steer us toward God?

  230. That's the question I want to spend

  231. the rest of our time together on.

  232. So, the questions of pleasures.

  233. Jesus says,

  234. hate your mother and father

  235. and brother and sister,

  236. wife, children,

  237. even his own life.

  238. What does this mean?

  239. This is certainly

  240. the most difficult passage

  241. in our verse,

  242. in our passage for tonight.

  243. Here's what I don't think it means.

  244. I don't think it means

  245. really hating our family members.

  246. Which is to say,

  247. I don't think it means

  248. what it pretty clearly seems to mean.

  249. Why do I not think it means that?

  250. Well, for the simple reason

  251. that it doesn't make a lot of sense

  252. of other parts of the Bible.

  253. If we say that the part,

  254. the essential feature

  255. of being a Christian

  256. is that we hate our family members,

  257. there's a lot of the Bible

  258. that seems not to make any sense anymore.

  259. For example,

  260. Jesus says,

  261. the first commandment of the law,

  262. the most important one,

  263. love the Lord your God.

  264. The second one,

  265. love your neighbor as yourself.

  266. Well,

  267. if we are to hate our neighbors,

  268. hate our family,

  269. we can no longer

  270. obey that second commandment.

  271. This introduces

  272. all kinds of strangeness

  273. if we interpret this passage

  274. as literally saying

  275. that we ought to hate our family.

  276. Or again,

  277. in the book of 1 John,

  278. where we learn that love,

  279. not hate,

  280. is the defining feature

  281. of the Christian.

  282. John says,

  283. Beloved,

  284. let us love one another

  285. for love is from God

  286. and whoever loves

  287. has been born of God

  288. and knows God.

  289. Anyone who does not love

  290. does not know God

  291. because God is love.

  292. That seems to fly in the face

  293. of what's being said here.

  294. We have a straightforward

  295. contradiction

  296. and so what we have to do

  297. in order to make sense

  298. of this contradiction

  299. is follow

  300. an old rule

  301. in scriptural interpretation.

  302. Almost as old

  303. as the Bible itself

  304. and the rule is this.

  305. Christians interpret

  306. the difficult pieces

  307. of scripture

  308. in light

  309. of the easy pieces

  310. of scripture.

  311. It's a nice rule.

  312. It goes back

  313. as old as the church fathers.

  314. They recognize

  315. there are some ambiguities

  316. and difficulties

  317. in the text

  318. and what we're to do

  319. is we're supposed

  320. to interpret

  321. those difficulties

  322. through the lens

  323. of the easier texts.

  324. I think doing that

  325. with this passage

  326. ends us up

  327. with this interpretation.

  328. We ought to be

  329. so committed

  330. in our love

  331. for Jesus

  332. that in comparison

  333. the love

  334. of family

  335. and indeed

  336. of our own lives

  337. looks like

  338. hatred.

  339. hatred.

  340. We ought to be

  341. so in love

  342. with Jesus

  343. that in comparison

  344. all of our other

  345. loves look like

  346. hatreds.

  347. It's a comparative

  348. claim

  349. that he's making here.

  350. Some examples

  351. of this.

  352. How do you love

  353. Jesus in a way

  354. that makes

  355. your love of family

  356. look like

  357. hatred?

  358. A big one

  359. I can think of

  360. is converting

  361. away from a religion

  362. that has been

  363. in your family

  364. for decades

  365. and is against

  366. Christ.

  367. Some of you

  368. may have stories

  369. or your parents

  370. may have stories

  371. like this.

  372. I know mine

  373. do.

  374. When my parents

  375. became Christians

  376. and went in their

  377. excitement to tell

  378. their parents

  379. their parents

  380. first response was

  381. what's wrong

  382. with the way

  383. I raised you?

  384. They thought

  385. they were hated

  386. by my parents

  387. because my parents

  388. knew love

  389. for Jesus.

  390. Now my grandparents

  391. never tried to

  392. kill my parents.

  393. In some parts

  394. of the world

  395. that's precisely

  396. what happens

  397. when you abandon

  398. the family's religion.

  399. Your love

  400. for Christ

  401. makes your other

  402. loves look like

  403. hatreds.

  404. Or what does it

  405. mean to love Christ

  406. so much that it

  407. looks like your

  408. own life is hated?

  409. How about

  410. martyrdom?

  411. the idea that

  412. I will not

  413. abandon Christ

  414. even if it

  415. costs me

  416. my own life.

  417. Again

  418. so many

  419. examples

  420. of ways

  421. that our

  422. love for Christ

  423. reorients

  424. our other

  425. loves.

  426. You see

  427. I don't think

  428. this text

  429. means that

  430. we're supposed

  431. to love our

  432. families less

  433. than we do.

  434. I think this

  435. means we're

  436. supposed to

  437. love our

  438. families and

  439. our own

  440. lives better

  441. than we do.

  442. And how

  443. does a

  444. Christian

  445. do this?

  446. The Christian

  447. loves his

  448. own life

  449. and the

  450. lives of

  451. the people

  452. around him

  453. by ordering

  454. his loves

  455. rightly.

  456. Ordering your

  457. loves rightly.

  458. Here's an easy

  459. example of this.

  460. It's good

  461. to eat a

  462. hamburger.

  463. It is

  464. also good

  465. to save

  466. a drowning

  467. child.

  468. but it's

  469. not good

  470. to eat

  471. a hamburger

  472. while the

  473. child is

  474. drowning.

  475. Right?

  476. So there

  477. are two

  478. good things

  479. that you

  480. ought to

  481. love doing

  482. but they

  483. ought to

  484. be ordered

  485. in a

  486. particular

  487. way.

  488. Such that

  489. if you

  490. have to

  491. pick one

  492. of them

  493. don't pick

  494. the hamburger

  495. over the

  496. drowning

  497. child.

  498. Now you're

  499. not going to

  500. forget this.

  501. Alright.

  502. Here I think

  503. is what Jesus

  504. is trying to

  505. tell us.

  506. That the

  507. love for

  508. God

  509. orders the

  510. rest of

  511. our

  512. loves.

  513. That the

  514. love of

  515. our family

  516. or indeed

  517. of our

  518. own lives

  519. over him

  520. results in

  521. idolatry.

  522. And all

  523. our other

  524. loves

  525. will end up

  526. being skewed

  527. in service

  528. of our

  529. highest love.

  530. If you

  531. love your

  532. career more

  533. than anything

  534. else

  535. then everything

  536. you have

  537. will be

  538. skewed

  539. in the

  540. direction of

  541. career advancement.

  542. And if you

  543. love money

  544. more than

  545. anything else

  546. then everything

  547. in your

  548. life will

  549. be skewed

  550. in terms

  551. of how

  552. you can

  553. get more

  554. money.

  555. So on

  556. for fame

  557. and so on

  558. for your

  559. own safety

  560. for good

  561. health.

  562. Notice

  563. this.

  564. This is

  565. the way

  566. we work.

  567. We love

  568. so many

  569. different

  570. things

  571. but that

  572. thing we

  573. put in

  574. our position

  575. of highest

  576. love

  577. has a

  578. tendency

  579. to attract

  580. all of

  581. our other

  582. loves

  583. to it.

  584. There's

  585. an implication

  586. for what

  587. we put

  588. at our

  589. highest

  590. love

  591. on the

  592. rest of

  593. our

  594. loves.

  595. perhaps

  596. you

  597. might

  598. know

  599. a

  600. woman

  601. or a

  602. man

  603. a

  604. child

  605. or a

  606. parent

  607. who

  608. loves

  609. their

  610. child

  611. more than

  612. anything

  613. else in

  614. the world.

  615. And the

  616. result is

  617. that that

  618. child is

  619. not loved

  620. well

  621. that child

  622. is turned

  623. into an

  624. idol.

  625. Or again

  626. a person

  627. who loves

  628. their spouse

  629. more than

  630. anything else

  631. in the

  632. world

  633. is turned

  634. into an

  635. idol.

  636. You can't

  637. see it

  638. properly.

  639. You can't

  640. relate to

  641. it well.

  642. You turn

  643. it into

  644. an

  645. idol.

  646. But the

  647. claim of

  648. Jesus here

  649. is that

  650. when we

  651. put God

  652. in that

  653. position

  654. of our

  655. first love

  656. then that's

  657. the only

  658. right way

  659. to order

  660. all of the

  661. rest of

  662. our loves.

  663. God

  664. when we

  665. love God

  666. we love

  667. everything

  668. for God's

  669. sake.

  670. So we

  671. love our

  672. wife and

  673. husband and

  674. children and

  675. parents,

  676. brothers and

  677. sisters,

  678. even our

  679. own lives

  680. for the

  681. sake of

  682. loving God.

  683. What might

  684. this mean?

  685. Well,

  686. it means that

  687. we ought to

  688. love everything

  689. in our

  690. life

  691. in so

  692. far as

  693. it helps

  694. us love

  695. God

  696. and in

  697. such a way

  698. as to

  699. help them

  700. love God.

  701. There is

  702. plenty of

  703. confusion in

  704. the world

  705. about what

  706. love is.

  707. And the

  708. dominant idea

  709. seems to be

  710. something like

  711. leaving people

  712. alone to do

  713. whatever they

  714. want.

  715. That's just

  716. not the

  717. Christian idea

  718. of love.

  719. The Christian

  720. idea of

  721. love is to

  722. love everyone

  723. around us

  724. in such a

  725. way that

  726. their highest

  727. joy would

  728. be found

  729. in God.

  730. So what

  731. does it

  732. mean to

  733. love your

  734. neighbor or

  735. your mother or

  736. your sister or

  737. your brother or

  738. your child?

  739. Well,

  740. it means to

  741. love them in

  742. such a way as

  743. to always point

  744. them to

  745. God.

  746. Not to

  747. allow them to

  748. indulge in

  749. destructive

  750. behaviors,

  751. behaviors,

  752. but rather

  753. to point

  754. them toward

  755. the thing

  756. that will

  757. truly make

  758. them happy.

  759. Sometimes

  760. this will

  761. look like

  762. hatred,

  763. as it does

  764. when a

  765. parent pulls

  766. their child's

  767. hand away

  768. from the

  769. stove,

  770. intervening

  771. in their

  772. desires,

  773. not allowing

  774. them to do

  775. what they

  776. want to do.

  777. Surely you

  778. must hate

  779. a person

  780. like that.

  781. No,

  782. you love

  783. a person.

  784. And so

  785. you love

  786. them by

  787. pointing

  788. them to

  789. the highest

  790. good.

  791. When the

  792. loves of

  793. the Christian

  794. are ordered

  795. properly,

  796. the Christian

  797. then goes

  798. out to

  799. try to

  800. help all

  801. other

  802. fellow

  803. Christians

  804. order

  805. their

  806. loves

  807. properly.

  808. So the

  809. way we

  810. use the

  811. pleasures

  812. of other

  813. people is

  814. we use

  815. people in

  816. such a way

  817. that we

  818. might help

  819. them on

  820. their way

  821. to God.

  822. consider

  823. some things

  824. that the

  825. writer of

  826. Hebrews

  827. says.

  828. The writer

  829. of Hebrews

  830. says,

  831. let us

  832. consider

  833. how to

  834. stir

  835. one up

  836. one another

  837. to love

  838. and good

  839. works,

  840. not neglecting

  841. to meet

  842. together as

  843. is the

  844. habit of

  845. some,

  846. but encouraging

  847. each other

  848. all the more

  849. as you see

  850. the day

  851. drawing near.

  852. We love

  853. each other

  854. not by

  855. forgetting

  856. about each

  857. other and

  858. letting each

  859. other do

  860. whatever we

  861. desire,

  862. but rather

  863. by stirring

  864. each other

  865. up to love

  866. and good

  867. works.

  868. Or consider

  869. again the

  870. words of

  871. C.S.

  872. Lewis in

  873. a sermon

  874. called

  875. The Weight

  876. of Glory,

  877. which I

  878. recommend to

  879. you if

  880. you've

  881. never read

  882. it.

  883. He says

  884. this,

  885. it is a

  886. serious

  887. thing to

  888. remember

  889. that the

  890. dullest

  891. and most

  892. uninteresting

  893. person you

  894. can talk

  895. to will

  896. one day

  897. be a

  898. creature

  899. which if

  900. you saw

  901. it now

  902. you would

  903. be strongly

  904. tempted to

  905. worship

  906. or else

  907. it would

  908. be a

  909. horror

  910. and a

  911. corruption

  912. such as

  913. you now

  914. meet if

  915. at all

  916. only in

  917. a nightmare

  918. and all

  919. day long

  920. we in

  921. some degree

  922. are helping

  923. each other

  924. to one

  925. or other

  926. of these

  927. destinations.

  928. There are

  929. no ordinary

  930. people.

  931. You have

  932. never talked

  933. to a mere

  934. mortal.

  935. You have

  936. never talked

  937. to a mere

  938. mortal and

  939. every interaction

  940. with every

  941. person you

  942. meet is

  943. helping them

  944. become a

  945. lover of

  946. God or

  947. a lover

  948. of

  949. themselves.

  950. And

  951. Jesus

  952. says

  953. counting

  954. the cost

  955. of following

  956. him

  957. means

  958. loving

  959. everything

  960. in this

  961. world

  962. in such

  963. a way

  964. that we

  965. help

  966. that thing

  967. move

  968. toward God

  969. that person

  970. move

  971. toward God

  972. that we

  973. love even

  974. our own

  975. selves

  976. only as

  977. we move

  978. ourselves

  979. toward God.

  980. This is

  981. the way

  982. we use

  983. the pleasures

  984. around us.

  985. We use

  986. them to

  987. wing us

  988. on our

  989. way up

  990. to God.

  991. We cannot

  992. follow Jesus

  993. and make

  994. the pleasures

  995. of this

  996. world into

  997. idols.

  998. We can

  999. follow Jesus

  1000. and make

  1001. the pleasures

  1002. of this

  1003. world

  1004. signposts

  1005. that point

  1006. to his

  1007. goodness.

  1008. There's a

  1009. temptation I

  1010. think among

  1011. some of

  1012. loving the

  1013. world too

  1014. much.

  1015. It's a good

  1016. temptation.

  1017. When you

  1018. love the

  1019. world too

  1020. much,

  1021. that's

  1022. called

  1023. idolatry.

  1024. Or if

  1025. you love

  1026. the world

  1027. wrongly,

  1028. it's called

  1029. idolatry.

  1030. But if

  1031. you look

  1032. at the

  1033. words of

  1034. Jesus

  1035. in the

  1036. Gospels,

  1037. it seems

  1038. like he

  1039. actually

  1040. loves this

  1041. world.

  1042. He's

  1043. come to

  1044. redeem it,

  1045. that he

  1046. loves it,

  1047. that he

  1048. sees that

  1049. there are

  1050. good things

  1051. in it,

  1052. that he

  1053. desires

  1054. to save.

  1055. If we

  1056. can see

  1057. each other

  1058. and the

  1059. things of

  1060. this world

  1061. through his

  1062. eyes,

  1063. to see

  1064. those things

  1065. as they're

  1066. good in

  1067. themselves,

  1068. that is

  1069. the way

  1070. we can

  1071. love each

  1072. other and

  1073. the things

  1074. of this

  1075. world in

  1076. such a way

  1077. as to

  1078. encourage us

  1079. on our

  1080. way to

  1081. God.

  1082. So,

  1083. the use

  1084. to be made

  1085. of pleasures

  1086. in following

  1087. the Lord

  1088. is not

  1089. to make

  1090. them into

  1091. idols,

  1092. but to

  1093. use them

  1094. as sign

  1095. posts

  1096. that

  1097. point

  1098. to the

  1099. beauty

  1100. of God.

  1101. To

  1102. understand

  1103. ourselves

  1104. as fellow

  1105. pilgrims

  1106. on the

  1107. way

  1108. moving

  1109. up

  1110. to

  1111. heaven,

  1112. we

  1113. ought

  1114. to

  1115. encourage

  1116. each

  1117. other

  1118. on

  1119. our

  1120. way

  1121. there.

  1122. That's

  1123. the use

  1124. to be

  1125. made

  1126. of

  1127. pains.

  1128. What

  1129. about

  1130. the use

  1131. to be

  1132. made

  1133. of

  1134. pleasures?

  1135. What

  1136. about

  1137. the use

  1138. to be

  1139. made

  1140. of

  1141. pains?

  1142. We'll

  1143. see there

  1144. in verse

  1145. 27,

  1146. Jesus

  1147. says,

  1148. whoever

  1149. does not

  1150. bear

  1151. his own

  1152. cross

  1153. and come

  1154. after

  1155. me

  1156. cannot

  1157. be

  1158. my

  1159. disciple.

  1160. whoever

  1161. does not

  1162. willingly

  1163. accept

  1164. some

  1165. pains

  1166. in this

  1167. world

  1168. cannot

  1169. be

  1170. my

  1171. disciple.

  1172. Indeed,

  1173. the person

  1174. who is

  1175. not

  1176. willing

  1177. to lay

  1178. down

  1179. his

  1180. or her

  1181. very

  1182. life

  1183. cannot

  1184. be

  1185. my

  1186. disciple.

  1187. So

  1188. pain

  1189. is

  1190. normal

  1191. for the

  1192. life

  1193. of a

  1194. Christian.

  1195. Which

  1196. means

  1197. if you

  1198. have

  1199. organized

  1200. your

  1201. life

  1202. in such

  1203. a

  1204. way

  1205. as

  1206. to

  1207. avoid

  1208. as

  1209. strongly

  1210. as

  1211. possible

  1212. any

  1213. possible

  1214. pains,

  1215. you're

  1216. going to

  1217. have

  1218. difficulty

  1219. following

  1220. the

  1221. Lord.

  1222. Because

  1223. he

  1224. says

  1225. taking

  1226. up

  1227. crosses

  1228. and

  1229. following

  1230. him

  1231. is

  1232. just

  1233. part

  1234. of

  1235. the

  1236. deal.

  1237. So

  1238. then

  1239. if we

  1240. can't

  1241. flee

  1242. from

  1243. pain

  1244. at

  1245. any

  1246. cost,

  1247. how

  1248. do

  1249. we

  1250. use

  1251. pains?

  1252. How

  1253. do

  1254. we

  1255. use

  1256. pains

  1257. in

  1258. our

  1259. life

  1260. of

  1261. following

  1262. Christ?

  1263. we

  1264. should

  1265. see

  1266. them

  1267. I

  1268. think

  1269. as

  1270. bearing

  1271. the

  1272. cross.

  1273. The

  1274. phrase

  1275. that

  1276. Jesus

  1277. uses

  1278. here

  1279. bearing

  1280. the

  1281. cross

  1282. and

  1283. following

  1284. me.

  1285. There's

  1286. religious

  1287. meaning

  1288. in this

  1289. now.

  1290. It

  1291. wasn't

  1292. clear what

  1293. this meant

  1294. when he

  1295. first said

  1296. it.

  1297. But

  1298. what we

  1299. know

  1300. after

  1301. this

  1302. story

  1303. is that

  1304. Christ

  1305. himself

  1306. came

  1307. to

  1308. bear

  1309. the

  1310. cross.

  1311. was

  1312. that

  1313. suffering

  1314. meaningless?

  1315. Absolutely

  1316. not.

  1317. But

  1318. through

  1319. that

  1320. suffering

  1321. God

  1322. was

  1323. redeeming

  1324. the

  1325. entire

  1326. world.

  1327. And

  1328. now

  1329. he

  1330. says

  1331. bear

  1332. your

  1333. cross

  1334. as

  1335. well.

  1336. What

  1337. he

  1338. does

  1339. by

  1340. saying

  1341. that

  1342. your

  1343. pains

  1344. are

  1345. a

  1346. cross

  1347. is

  1348. he

  1349. redeems

  1350. them

  1351. and

  1352. gives

  1353. them

  1354. meaning.

  1355. Now

  1356. our

  1357. suffering

  1358. in the

  1359. way

  1360. of

  1361. following

  1362. Jesus

  1363. is

  1364. not

  1365. just

  1366. unfortunate.

  1367. It's

  1368. not

  1369. just

  1370. frustrating.

  1371. It's

  1372. redemptive.

  1373. It

  1374. means

  1375. something.

  1376. We

  1377. are

  1378. on

  1379. our

  1380. way

  1381. to

  1382. glory

  1383. following

  1384. in

  1385. the

  1386. footsteps

  1387. of

  1388. Christ.

  1389. Our

  1390. master

  1391. has

  1392. borne

  1393. a

  1394. cross

  1395. and

  1396. we

  1397. must

  1398. too

  1399. bear

  1400. crosses.

  1401. Think

  1402. about

  1403. the

  1404. way

  1405. Paul

  1406. talks

  1407. about

  1408. this.

  1409. His

  1410. own

  1411. pains

  1412. going

  1413. around

  1414. in

  1415. his

  1416. missionary

  1417. endeavors.

  1418. To

  1419. the

  1420. Colossians

  1421. he

  1422. says

  1423. this.

  1424. I

  1425. rejoice

  1426. in

  1427. my

  1428. sufferings

  1429. for

  1430. your

  1431. sake

  1432. and

  1433. in

  1434. my

  1435. flesh

  1436. I

  1437. am

  1438. filling

  1439. up

  1440. what

  1441. is

  1442. lacking

  1443. in

  1444. Christ's

  1445. afflictions

  1446. for

  1447. the

  1448. sake

  1449. of

  1450. his

  1451. body

  1452. that

  1453. is

  1454. the

  1455. church.

  1456. I

  1457. am

  1458. filling

  1459. up

  1460. the

  1461. afflictions

  1462. of

  1463. Christ.

  1464. The

  1465. suffering

  1466. that

  1467. Christ

  1468. suffered

  1469. I

  1470. am

  1471. participating

  1472. in

  1473. that

  1474. suffering

  1475. in

  1476. order

  1477. to

  1478. bring

  1479. the

  1480. church

  1481. to

  1482. its

  1483. fullness.

  1484. Paul

  1485. talks

  1486. like

  1487. this

  1488. all

  1489. the

  1490. time.

  1491. In

  1492. Philippians

  1493. he

  1494. says

  1495. I

  1496. desire

  1497. to

  1498. depart

  1499. and

  1500. be

  1501. with

  1502. Christ

  1503. but

  1504. I

  1505. know

  1506. that

  1507. to

  1508. stay

  1509. here

  1510. and

  1511. labor

  1512. is

  1513. going

  1514. to

  1515. be

  1516. difficult

  1517. but

  1518. I'll

  1519. do

  1520. it.

  1521. I'm

  1522. going

  1523. to

  1524. labor

  1525. painfully

  1526. with

  1527. you

  1528. not

  1529. because

  1530. pain

  1531. is

  1532. good

  1533. in

  1534. itself

  1535. not

  1536. because

  1537. my

  1538. pain

  1539. is

  1540. meaningless

  1541. because

  1542. I

  1543. can

  1544. share

  1545. in

  1546. the

  1547. sufferings

  1548. of

  1549. Christ.

  1550. This

  1551. suffering

  1552. with

  1553. Christ

  1554. is

  1555. what

  1556. we

  1557. picture

  1558. when

  1559. we

  1560. baptize

  1561. people.

  1562. We

  1563. are

  1564. buried

  1565. with

  1566. Christ

  1567. and

  1568. we

  1569. are

  1570. raised

  1571. again

  1572. with

  1573. Christ.

  1574. This

  1575. is

  1576. the

  1577. mark

  1578. of

  1579. initiation

  1580. into

  1581. the

  1582. people

  1583. of

  1584. God.

  1585. It's

  1586. so

  1587. unavoidably

  1588. a part

  1589. of

  1590. the

  1591. Christian

  1592. life

  1593. that

  1594. it's

  1595. the

  1596. drama

  1597. we

  1598. play

  1599. out

  1600. when

  1601. we

  1602. welcome

  1603. a

  1604. new

  1605. person

  1606. into

  1607. the

  1608. life

  1609. of

  1610. the

  1611. church.

  1612. When

  1613. a

  1614. person

  1615. becomes

  1616. a

  1617. believer

  1618. and

  1619. enters

  1620. into

  1621. the

  1622. church

  1623. we

  1624. baptize

  1625. them.

  1626. We

  1627. tell

  1628. them

  1629. guess

  1630. what

  1631. death

  1632. and

  1633. resurrection

  1634. is

  1635. part

  1636. of

  1637. the

  1638. deal.

  1639. You

  1640. don't

  1641. get

  1642. in

  1643. without

  1644. death

  1645. and

  1646. resurrection.

  1647. Both

  1648. Jesus'

  1649. and

  1650. our

  1651. own.

  1652. But

  1653. notice

  1654. what this

  1655. does

  1656. with our

  1657. sufferings.

  1658. It

  1659. means

  1660. we

  1661. embrace

  1662. them.

  1663. Not

  1664. because

  1665. we're

  1666. masochists.

  1667. Not

  1668. because

  1669. we love

  1670. suffering.

  1671. Because

  1672. we realize

  1673. that our

  1674. sufferings

  1675. are bearing

  1676. crosses.

  1677. There's

  1678. redemption

  1679. happening.

  1680. Paul tells

  1681. us in

  1682. Romans 8

  1683. that the

  1684. pangs of

  1685. this world

  1686. are not the

  1687. pangs of

  1688. death,

  1689. but the

  1690. pangs of

  1691. birth.

  1692. The sort

  1693. of pains

  1694. that you

  1695. willingly

  1696. undertake

  1697. because new

  1698. life comes

  1699. out of

  1700. them.

  1701. pangs of

  1702. following

  1703. Christ

  1704. means there

  1705. will be

  1706. pleasures

  1707. and pains.

  1708. The

  1709. pleasures

  1710. can

  1711. distract

  1712. us

  1713. or they

  1714. can

  1715. help

  1716. us

  1717. on our

  1718. way

  1719. up

  1720. to

  1721. loving

  1722. him.

  1723. The

  1724. pains

  1725. can

  1726. drive

  1727. us

  1728. away

  1729. from

  1730. him

  1731. or

  1732. they

  1733. can

  1734. be

  1735. redeemed

  1736. by

  1737. him.

  1738. The

  1739. use

  1740. to be

  1741. made

  1742. of

  1743. pleasures

  1744. and

  1745. pains

  1746. if

  1747. we're

  1748. not

  1749. going

  1750. to

  1751. allow

  1752. them

  1753. to

  1754. distract

  1755. us

  1756. from

  1757. following

  1758. him.

  1759. The

  1760. use

  1761. of

  1762. pleasures

  1763. and

  1764. pains

  1765. is

  1766. the

  1767. same.

  1768. We

  1769. offer

  1770. our

  1771. pleasures

  1772. up

  1773. to

  1774. God

  1775. as

  1776. worship.

  1777. We

  1778. offer

  1779. our

  1780. pains

  1781. up

  1782. to

  1783. God

  1784. as

  1785. participating

  1786. in

  1787. his

  1788. sufferings.

  1789. Think

  1790. about

  1791. this.

  1792. Think

  1793. of a

  1794. little

  1795. pure

  1796. joy

  1797. you've

  1798. experienced

  1799. recently.

  1800. For

  1801. me

  1802. it

  1803. was

  1804. eating

  1805. ice

  1806. cream

  1807. at

  1808. this

  1809. new

  1810. ice

  1811. cream

  1812. store.

  1813. There's

  1814. a

  1815. way

  1816. of

  1817. making

  1818. that

  1819. ice

  1820. cream

  1821. into

  1822. an

  1823. idol.

  1824. There

  1825. is.

  1826. Or

  1827. there's

  1828. a

  1829. way

  1830. of

  1831. making

  1832. that

  1833. ice

  1834. cream

  1835. into

  1836. an

  1837. occasion

  1838. for

  1839. worship.

  1840. There's

  1841. a

  1842. way

  1843. of

  1844. making

  1845. the

  1846. sunshine

  1847. outside

  1848. an

  1849. occasion

  1850. for

  1851. worship.

  1852. There's

  1853. a

  1854. way

  1855. to

  1856. make

  1857. the

  1858. beauty

  1859. of

  1860. stained

  1861. glass

  1862. windows

  1863. into

  1864. occasions

  1865. for

  1866. worship.

  1867. God

  1868. is

  1869. lavishing

  1870. his

  1871. joy

  1872. upon

  1873. us

  1874. through

  1875. the

  1876. thousands

  1877. of

  1878. pleasures

  1879. we

  1880. experience

  1881. each

  1882. day

  1883. that we

  1884. don't

  1885. even

  1886. realize.

  1887. They're

  1888. occasions

  1889. for our

  1890. worship.

  1891. And God

  1892. is also

  1893. doing

  1894. something

  1895. in every

  1896. one of

  1897. the pains

  1898. that we

  1899. experience

  1900. as we

  1901. follow

  1902. him.

  1903. he's

  1904. doing

  1905. something.

  1906. Our

  1907. pain

  1908. is not

  1909. meaningless

  1910. to him.

  1911. Listen to

  1912. the way

  1913. Paul

  1914. talks

  1915. in

  1916. Galatians

  1917. 2.

  1918. He

  1919. says,

  1920. I've

  1921. been

  1922. crucified

  1923. with

  1924. Christ.

  1925. Stop.

  1926. I've

  1927. been

  1928. crucified

  1929. with

  1930. Christ.

  1931. I've

  1932. been

  1933. killed

  1934. by the

  1935. firing

  1936. squad

  1937. with

  1938. Christ.

  1939. I've

  1940. been

  1941. lethally

  1942. injected

  1943. with

  1944. Christ.

  1945. I've

  1946. been

  1947. beheaded

  1948. with

  1949. Christ.

  1950. I've

  1951. been

  1952. electric

  1953. chaired

  1954. with

  1955. Christ.

  1956. Think

  1957. of the

  1958. language

  1959. he's

  1960. using

  1961. here.

  1962. It's

  1963. vivid.

  1964. I

  1965. have

  1966. been

  1967. crucified

  1968. with

  1969. Christ.

  1970. It

  1971. is

  1972. no

  1973. longer

  1974. I

  1975. who

  1976. live,

  1977. but

  1978. Christ

  1979. who

  1980. lives

  1981. in

  1982. me.

  1983. And

  1984. the

  1985. life

  1986. I

  1987. now

  1988. live

  1989. in

  1990. the

  1991. flesh,

  1992. I

  1993. live

  1994. by

  1995. faith

  1996. in

  1997. the

  1998. Son

  1999. of

  2000. God

  2001. who

  2002. loved

  2003. me

  2004. and

  2005. gave

  2006. himself

  2007. for

  2008. me.

  2009. Jesus

  2010. says

  2011. that the

  2012. way

  2013. to

  2014. follow

  2015. him

  2016. is

  2017. to

  2018. give

  2019. up

  2020. the

  2021. things

  2022. that

  2023. we

  2024. have.

  2025. To

  2026. willingly

  2027. embrace

  2028. pain

  2029. and

  2030. to

  2031. find

  2032. that

  2033. by

  2034. giving

  2035. up

  2036. the

  2037. things

  2038. that

  2039. we

  2040. have

  2041. we

  2042. receive

  2043. them

  2044. all

  2045. back

  2046. again.

  2047. And

  2048. that

  2049. by

  2050. willingly

  2051. embracing

  2052. pain

  2053. we

  2054. find

  2055. that

  2056. pain

  2057. not

  2058. to

  2059. be

  2060. mere

  2061. meaningless

  2062. suffering

  2063. but

  2064. to

  2065. be

  2066. working

  2067. out

  2068. redemption

  2069. for

  2070. us.

  2071. If

  2072. we

  2073. would

  2074. flee

  2075. away

  2076. from

  2077. using

  2078. pleasure

  2079. like

  2080. this

  2081. or

  2082. flee

  2083. away

  2084. from

  2085. using

  2086. pain

  2087. like

  2088. this

  2089. we

  2090. can't

  2091. be

  2092. followers

  2093. of

  2094. Christ.

  2095. But

  2096. what

  2097. we

  2098. find

  2099. in

  2100. following

  2101. Christ

  2102. is

  2103. that

  2104. he

  2105. has

  2106. won

  2107. for

  2108. us

  2109. all

  2110. of

  2111. the

  2112. pleasures

  2113. we

  2114. could

  2115. ever

  2116. need.

  2117. Do

  2118. you

  2119. remember

  2120. the

  2121. story

  2122. of

  2123. Abraham

  2124. and

  2125. Isaac?

  2126. Abraham's

  2127. asked to

  2128. sacrifice

  2129. Isaac

  2130. shows

  2131. that he's

  2132. willing

  2133. to go

  2134. ahead

  2135. and do

  2136. it.

  2137. And

  2138. what

  2139. happens

  2140. afterwards

  2141. stunningly

  2142. he receives

  2143. Isaac

  2144. back

  2145. again.

  2146. All

  2147. of the

  2148. things

  2149. he was

  2150. willing

  2151. to

  2152. sacrifice

  2153. because

  2154. God

  2155. commanded

  2156. him

  2157. to

  2158. he

  2159. received

  2160. back

  2161. again.

  2162. If

  2163. any

  2164. man

  2165. loses

  2166. his

  2167. life

  2168. for

  2169. my

  2170. sake

  2171. he

  2172. will

  2173. gain

  2174. it.

  2175. This

  2176. is

  2177. what

  2178. Jesus

  2179. says.

  2180. How

  2181. do

  2182. we

  2183. know

  2184. this

  2185. is

  2186. true?

  2187. How

  2188. do

  2189. we

  2190. know

  2191. that

  2192. our

  2193. pleasures

  2194. are

  2195. redeemed

  2196. and

  2197. our

  2198. pains

  2199. are

  2200. redeemed?

  2201. We

  2202. know

  2203. them

  2204. because

  2205. we

  2206. are

  2207. following

  2208. in

  2209. the

  2210. footsteps

  2211. of

  2212. Jesus.

  2213. Jesus

  2214. suffered

  2215. these

  2216. pains

  2217. to bring

  2218. us to

  2219. glory.

  2220. Jesus

  2221. bore

  2222. his

  2223. cross

  2224. to

  2225. take

  2226. us

  2227. into

  2228. the

  2229. kingdom.

  2230. Consider

  2231. some

  2232. of these

  2233. things

  2234. that he

  2235. says

  2236. about

  2237. our

  2238. pleasures.

  2239. And

  2240. our

  2241. pains.

  2242. He

  2243. says

  2244. this

  2245. in

  2246. Luke

  2247. 12

  2248. 13

  2249. Fear

  2250. not

  2251. little

  2252. flock.

  2253. It

  2254. is your

  2255. father's

  2256. good

  2257. pleasure

  2258. to

  2259. give

  2260. you

  2261. the

  2262. kingdom.

  2263. Notice

  2264. that.

  2265. It's

  2266. your

  2267. father's

  2268. good

  2269. pleasure

  2270. to

  2271. give

  2272. you

  2273. the

  2274. kingdom.

  2275. What

  2276. follows

  2277. afterwards?

  2278. Therefore

  2279. sell your

  2280. possessions

  2281. and give

  2282. the

  2283. needy.

  2284. Provide

  2285. yourselves

  2286. with

  2287. money

  2288. bags

  2289. that

  2290. do

  2291. not

  2292. grow

  2293. old.

  2294. With

  2295. a

  2296. treasure

  2297. in

  2298. the

  2299. heavens

  2300. that

  2301. does

  2302. not

  2303. fail

  2304. where

  2305. no

  2306. thief

  2307. approaches

  2308. and

  2309. no

  2310. moth

  2311. destroys.

  2312. Do you

  2313. see?

  2314. The

  2315. father

  2316. wants to

  2317. give

  2318. you

  2319. the

  2320. kingdom.

  2321. Therefore

  2322. sell

  2323. the

  2324. junk

  2325. you

  2326. have

  2327. and

  2328. store

  2329. up

  2330. your

  2331. treasures

  2332. in

  2333. heaven.

  2334. Seek

  2335. out

  2336. for

  2337. yourselves

  2338. true

  2339. pleasures.

  2340. Or

  2341. again

  2342. in

  2343. John

  2344. I

  2345. have

  2346. come

  2347. he

  2348. says

  2349. that

  2350. you

  2351. may

  2352. have

  2353. life

  2354. and

  2355. life

  2356. to

  2357. the

  2358. fullest.

  2359. Life

  2360. abundantly.

  2361. Life

  2362. full of

  2363. ice cream

  2364. and

  2365. sunshine.

  2366. He

  2367. did

  2368. this

  2369. he

  2370. purchased

  2371. these

  2372. gifts

  2373. for

  2374. us

  2375. by

  2376. enduring

  2377. the

  2378. pains

  2379. of

  2380. the

  2381. cross

  2382. and

  2383. purchasing

  2384. for

  2385. us

  2386. every

  2387. good

  2388. pleasure.

  2389. In

  2390. Ephesians

  2391. 4

  2392. Paul

  2393. says

  2394. when

  2395. Christ

  2396. ascended

  2397. on

  2398. high

  2399. he

  2400. led

  2401. a

  2402. host

  2403. of

  2404. captives

  2405. and

  2406. he

  2407. gave

  2408. gifts

  2409. to

  2410. men.

  2411. Like

  2412. a

  2413. conquering

  2414. general

  2415. after

  2416. he

  2417. returned

  2418. from

  2419. battle

  2420. he

  2421. brought

  2422. all

  2423. this

  2424. loot

  2425. with

  2426. him

  2427. and

  2428. he

  2429. gives

  2430. it

  2431. out

  2432. to

  2433. his

  2434. people

  2435. lavishly

  2436. but

  2437. the

  2438. cross

  2439. comes

  2440. before

  2441. the

  2442. crown

  2443. and

  2444. those

  2445. who

  2446. would

  2447. follow

  2448. him

  2449. would

  2450. take

  2451. up

  2452. their

  2453. cross

  2454. knowing

  2455. that

  2456. after

  2457. death

  2458. follows

  2459. resurrection

  2460. and

  2461. the

  2462. way

  2463. we

  2464. use

  2465. our

  2466. pleasures

  2467. and

  2468. pains

  2469. now

  2470. is

  2471. a

  2472. foretaste

  2473. of

  2474. that

  2475. resurrection

  2476. when

  2477. you

  2478. look

  2479. into

  2480. the

  2481. face

  2482. of

  2483. one

  2484. who

  2485. loves

  2486. you

  2487. when

  2488. you

  2489. eat

  2490. ice

  2491. cream

  2492. cone

  2493. you

  2494. are

  2495. tasting

  2496. the

  2497. very

  2498. very

  2499. smallest

  2500. little

  2501. pleasure

  2502. of

  2503. heaven

  2504. and

  2505. when

  2506. you

  2507. suffer

  2508. for

  2509. Christ's

  2510. sake

  2511. you

  2512. get a

  2513. sense

  2514. of

  2515. the

  2516. new

  2517. life

  2518. that

  2519. will

  2520. come

  2521. once

  2522. these

  2523. pangs

  2524. of

  2525. birth

  2526. are

  2527. completed

  2528. everything

  2529. in your

  2530. life

  2531. in the

  2532. service

  2533. of

  2534. Christ

  2535. has

  2536. meaning

  2537. your

  2538. pleasures

  2539. and

  2540. your

  2541. pains

  2542. are

  2543. doing

  2544. something

  2545. because

  2546. Christ

  2547. has

  2548. won

  2549. that

  2550. for

  2551. us

  2552. Christ

  2553. has

  2554. won

  2555. that

  2556. our

  2557. pains

  2558. would

  2559. not

  2560. be

  2561. foretastes

  2562. of

  2563. hell

  2564. Christ

  2565. has

  2566. won

  2567. for

  2568. you

  2569. the

  2570. fact

  2571. that

  2572. your

  2573. heart

  2574. break

  2575. is

  2576. not

  2577. a

  2578. foretaste

  2579. of

  2580. hell

  2581. that

  2582. your

  2583. bad

  2584. health

  2585. is

  2586. not

  2587. a

  2588. foretaste

  2589. of

  2590. hell

  2591. that

  2592. the

  2593. sin

  2594. that

  2595. so

  2596. easily

  2597. besets

  2598. you

  2599. is

  2600. not

  2601. a

  2602. foretaste

  2603. of

  2604. hell

  2605. those

  2606. pains

  2607. are

  2608. going

  2609. to

  2610. end

  2611. and

  2612. he

  2613. has

  2614. purchased

  2615. for

  2616. you

  2617. all

  2618. of

  2619. your

  2620. pleasures

  2621. are

  2622. foretastes

  2623. of

  2624. heaven

  2625. this

  2626. is

  2627. the

  2628. use

  2629. we

  2630. made

  2631. of

  2632. pleasures

  2633. and

  2634. pains

  2635. in

  2636. the

  2637. way

  2638. of

  2639. following

  2640. Jesus

  2641. if

  2642. we

  2643. would

  2644. seek

  2645. not

  2646. to

  2647. have

  2648. these

  2649. pains

  2650. we

  2651. will

  2652. not

  2653. have

  2654. the

  2655. redemption

  2656. that

  2657. comes

  2658. afterwards

  2659. if

  2660. we

  2661. would

  2662. seek

  2663. to

  2664. have

  2665. pleasures

  2666. first

  2667. we

  2668. will

  2669. not

  2670. finally

  2671. have

  2672. pleasures

  2673. at

  2674. all

  2675. but

  2676. rather

  2677. by

  2678. organizing

  2679. our

  2680. loves

  2681. putting

  2682. Christ

  2683. at

  2684. the

  2685. top

  2686. everything

  2687. else

  2688. falls

  2689. into

  2690. place

  2691. now

  2692. in

  2693. our

  2694. passage

  2695. Jesus

  2696. doesn't

  2697. give us

  2698. an

  2699. incentive

  2700. for

  2701. why

  2702. we

  2703. ought

  2704. to

  2705. do

  2706. this

  2707. he

  2708. doesn't

  2709. make

  2710. it

  2711. clear

  2712. why

  2713. we

  2714. ought

  2715. to

  2716. follow

  2717. him

  2718. in

  2719. this

  2720. way

  2721. take

  2722. up

  2723. our

  2724. electric

  2725. chair

  2726. and

  2727. follow

  2728. him

  2729. he

  2730. just

  2731. doesn't

  2732. say

  2733. that's

  2734. lived

  2735. out

  2736. in

  2737. his

  2738. life

  2739. and

  2740. the

  2741. chapters

  2742. to

  2743. come

  2744. Jesus

  2745. will

  2746. show

  2747. that

  2748. he

  2749. loves

  2750. us

  2751. by

  2752. going

  2753. to

  2754. the

  2755. cross

  2756. and

  2757. therefore

  2758. when we

  2759. love

  2760. Christ

  2761. more

  2762. than

  2763. anything

  2764. else

  2765. we

  2766. love

  2767. the

  2768. one

  2769. who

  2770. loves

  2771. us

  2772. more

  2773. than

  2774. anything

  2775. else

  2776. he

  2777. has

  2778. given

  2779. us

  2780. ample

  2781. reason

  2782. to

  2783. love

  2784. him

  2785. through

  2786. the

  2787. death

  2788. and

  2789. resurrection

  2790. that

  2791. he

  2792. endured

  2793. through

  2794. the

  2795. joy

  2796. that

  2797. he

  2798. won

  2799. for

  2800. us

  2801. meditate

  2802. on

  2803. these

  2804. things

  2805. little

  2806. flock

  2807. do

  2808. not

  2809. worry

  2810. the

  2811. father

  2812. desires

  2813. to

  2814. give

  2815. you

  2816. the

  2817. kingdom

  2818. what

  2819. are

  2820. these

  2821. pennies

  2822. compared

  2823. to

  2824. that

  2825. and

  2826. so

  2827. be

  2828. willing

  2829. friends

  2830. by

  2831. meditating

  2832. upon

  2833. the

  2834. beauty

  2835. of

  2836. Christ

  2837. to

  2838. love

  2839. him

  2840. more

  2841. than

  2842. pleasures

  2843. to

  2844. love

  2845. him

  2846. in

  2847. such

  2848. a

  2849. way

  2850. that

  2851. you

  2852. will

  2853. endure

  2854. pains

  2855. because

  2856. he

  2857. has

  2858. gone

  2859. before

  2860. us

  2861. in

  2862. enduring

  2863. these

  2864. pains

  2865. and

  2866. winning

  2867. for

  2868. us

  2869. these

  2870. pleasures

  2871. let's

  2872. pray

  2873. together

  2874. lord i

  2875. pray that

  2876. as we

  2877. think of

  2878. you

  2879. and meditate

  2880. on the

  2881. sacrifice

  2882. that you

  2883. made

  2884. for us

  2885. we

  2886. would

  2887. come

  2888. to

  2889. see

  2890. the

  2891. rest

  2892. of

  2893. these

  2894. things

  2895. in

  2896. life

  2897. as

  2898. cheap

  2899. in

  2900. comparison

  2901. to

  2902. you

  2903. that

  2904. once

  2905. we

  2906. give

  2907. them

  2908. up

  2909. for

  2910. you

  2911. and

  2912. you

  2913. give

  2914. them

  2915. back

  2916. to

  2917. us

  2918. we

  2919. can

  2920. use

  2921. every

  2922. one

  2923. of

  2924. them

  2925. as

  2926. occasions

  2927. for

  2928. worship

  2929. we

  2930. thank you

  2931. that you

  2932. loved

  2933. us

  2934. and gave

  2935. yourself

  2936. for us

  2937. that you

  2938. took up

  2939. your cross

  2940. so that

  2941. our

  2942. sufferings

  2943. will now

  2944. become

  2945. not

  2946. meaningless

  2947. but

  2948. cross

  2949. shaped

  2950. and we

  2951. know

  2952. from your

  2953. example

  2954. that after

  2955. the cross

  2956. comes

  2957. the

  2958. resurrection

  2959. so as

  2960. we

  2961. endure

  2962. sufferings

  2963. and

  2964. enjoy

  2965. pleasures

  2966. we

  2967. look

  2968. forward

  2969. to that

  2970. day

  2971. when

  2972. pleasure

  2973. will

  2974. be

  2975. forever

  2976. more

  2977. and

  2978. every

  2979. tear

  2980. will

  2981. be

  2982. wiped

  2983. away

  2984. we

  2985. pray

  2986. come

  2987. Lord

  2988. Jesus

  2989. in

  2990. his

  2991. name

  2992. we

  2993. pray

  2994. amen

  2995. to

  2996. up

  2997. to
