  1. No? There we go. Hey, how about that?

  2. Woo! There we go.

  3. Well, if you all will pray with me as we look into God's Word together, that'd be great.

  4. Father, we come to you tonight thankful that you are God who has not left yourself unknown and unknowable,

  5. but you have revealed yourself and you have given us your Word, this book, the Bible, to speak to us.

  6. And Lord, we praise you tonight for the story that we are going to read together

  7. and for the way it reveals the kind of God you are.

  8. Lord, I pray tonight that by your Spirit we might see these things rightly.

  9. And as we see them rightly, we might also rejoice in them and embrace them and make them our own.

  10. God, we know that only your Spirit can do this, so we ask for your help tonight.

  11. Lord, I ask for your help. Give me words to speak.

  12. We pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen.

  13. What does God think of you?

  14. Have you ever asked yourself that question?

  15. I don't know about you, but when I think about it, the first thing that comes to my mind is,

  16. I know my stuff.

  17. I know the moments when I saw the ugly of my heart rise up and just spew out the people around me.

  18. I know the times when I've used my words to crush those around me.

  19. The times when anger or rage has just exploded like Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens

  20. when he just takes his lightsaber and smashes all the machinery in his control room.

  21. Times when your selfishness exerted itself at the expense of those you cared about.

  22. Or the times when you fell in again into those destructive patterns that you've worked so hard to try to escape.

  23. Your mess.

  24. What the Bible calls sin.

  25. Our own willful sin and the effect of the sin of mankind that affects us in so many ways.

  26. Does it haunt you?

  27. Does me?

  28. Does it ever make you think, can God ever accept me?

  29. Could I ever come back to God?

  30. Could he ever really welcome me?

  31. The passage we're looking at tonight is for people like us who wonder those questions,

  32. who think about those things.

  33. We're going to look at three parables.

  34. It's a fairly long chapter, so we're going to look at it in two chunks.

  35. But three parables that reveal God's heart and reveal something of our own heart as well.

  36. And then the big idea, what I want you to hear,

  37. what I want to hear myself in the depths of my heart,

  38. is that God is a God who celebrates when repentant sinners are returned to him.

  39. And God doesn't just accept us, but he celebrates when people turn back to him,

  40. acknowledging how much they've messed up.

  41. And that's the kind of God that we see in this passage tonight.

  42. So if you have been coming here, you know we're preaching through the book of Luke,

  43. the central part of it from chapter 9 to chapter 19.

  44. We're in Luke 15, which is a very well-known chapter.

  45. The three parables are well-known.

  46. The third one particularly is the parable of the prodigal son.

  47. And so that's what we're going to look at tonight.

  48. As we look at it, you can turn.

  49. Do we have a page number in our pew Bibles?

  50. I don't know what it is.

  51. 8-7-4.

  52. Thank you.

  53. Thank you.

  54. This is crowd participation tonight.

  55. So 8-74, Luke 15.

  56. As we look at this, what we've seen is that Jesus in chapter 9 turned his face towards Jerusalem.

  57. And he's headed.

  58. He's headed to his death.

  59. He's headed to the height of conflict with the world.

  60. And conflict particularly with the religious leadership of Israel in that day.

  61. And yet in the height of that conflict where he dies,

  62. he also accomplishes the purpose for which he had come.

  63. To die on the cross for the sins of humanity.

  64. To somehow do a work whereby God might reconcile us to himself.

  65. Where he might make a way back to God when we had no way.

  66. And so this is what Jesus is heading towards.

  67. And as he's heading towards that, he's teaching and he's clarifying the nature of his mission.

  68. And he's doing so with increasing conflict.

  69. To those around him.

  70. As we read, I want to just point out before we start reading.

  71. Notice verses 1 and 2 because it sets up the context of who is his audience and who he's talking to.

  72. So let's read.

  73. We're going to start by reading verses 1 through 10.

  74. And we're going to talk about those for a while.

  75. And then we'll talk about 11 through the end of the chapter.

  76. And that's what we'll see.

  77. So let's read together.

  78. Luke chapter 15 starting in verse 1.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  79. Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him.

  80. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying,

  81. This man receives sinners and eats with him.

  82. So he told them this parable.

  83. What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?

  84. And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders rejoicing.

  85. And when he comes home, he calls his friends together and his neighbors, saying to them,

  86. Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.

  87. Just so I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

  88. Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it?

  89. And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.

  90. Just so I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

  91. Typically, when we read parables, parables are stories that have one main point.

  92. Sometimes they have auxiliary things.

  93. Sometimes we see that happening.

  94. But typically, they have one point.

  95. And the point here seems to be so clear.

  96. He's telling these stories.

  97. And then in verse 7 and verse 10, he gives the point.

  98. And there's a pattern that you see in both of these stories, in both of these parables.

  99. Something of value has been lost.

  100. The one who is responsible for the thing that has been lost then goes and seeks to find it.

  101. And when he finds it, he then gathers his friends and neighbors around and says,

  102. Let's rejoice and celebrate because the thing that is lost has now been found.

  103. And then in verses 7 through 10, Jesus says,

  104. And this is the point.

  105. This is what God does when sinners,

  106. And by that he means people who recognize that they have rejected God,

  107. That they have lived outside of his laws and his commandments,

  108. And also they have lived outside of a real living relationship with him.

  109. Those who have lived outside of that and sought to live independently of him,

  110. When they return,

  111. The heart of God is like the heart of the shepherd and the heart of the woman.

  112. It is full of joy and celebration.

  113. And this is the main central point of these parables.

  114. And they're fairly straightforward.

  115. There isn't a whole lot more to say.

  116. Some people have read these parables and think,

  117. Well, how is God like the woman?

  118. Or how is God like a shepherd?

  119. And you know, we could get into how those metaphors might point us to particular aspects of God.

  120. But that's not the point of the parable.

  121. The parable is saying,

  122. Hey, you know how a shepherd is, right?

  123. A shepherd, when he loses his sheep, he goes to find it.

  124. And similarly, you know how it's like,

  125. If you lose a silver coin,

  126. What are you going to do?

  127. You'll turn your house upside down to find it.

  128. Because that silver coin is precious and worthwhile.

  129. And when you find it,

  130. You will throw a party.

  131. Because the thing you've regained

  132. Brings great joy to your heart.

  133. And that's the way God is.

  134. God is like that.

  135. He celebrates.

  136. Now, it's really interesting.

  137. If you notice, look with me at verse 7.

  138. Because he says a little bit more than just that.

  139. Verse 7,

  140. Just so I tell you,

  141. There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.

  142. Okay, that's the point overall.

  143. But then he goes on and he says,

  144. Then over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

  145. Now, who is he talking about here?

  146. Because the Bible will tell us in other places,

  147. And clearly we see that Jesus,

  148. Throughout his ministry,

  149. Said that there is no one who is without sin in the world.

  150. No one who lives a perfect life.

  151. No one who relates perfectly to God.

  152. So what is he talking about here?

  153. Well, it's very similar to what happens in Luke 5.

  154. If you go back to Luke 5,

  155. Jesus is calling his disciples and he calls a man named Levi.

  156. Now, Levi is a tax collector.

  157. And as a tax collector,

  158. He is the rejected of the rejected.

  159. Because he's a traitor.

  160. He's a Jewish man who's working for the Roman oppressors.

  161. And he probably is stealing money from his Jewish neighbors along the way.

  162. He's pretty much a wretch and a lout.

  163. And you would never, ever do anything with him if you could avoid it.

  164. You would want to avoid him.

  165. And Jesus calls him to say,

  166. Come and follow me.

  167. And he gets up and he leaves his tax collection booth and follows Jesus.

  168. In fact, they go back and they have a party at Levi's house.

  169. And the Pharisees and the Sadducees, the religious leaders of the day, say this.

  170. The Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples saying,

  171. Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?

  172. Those are the unacceptable people in the minds of these people.

  173. Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?

  174. And Jesus answered them,

  175. Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

  176. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  177. This is a similar theme that you see throughout the scriptures.

  178. Where Jesus responds incredibly graciously and welcome, with great welcome,

  179. to people who know their neediness.

  180. Who know that they can't do it on their own.

  181. Who know that their own righteousness is never enough to please God.

  182. But,

  183. but,

  184. to those who think

  185. that by their religious duty,

  186. by their good deeds in the world,

  187. by their striving to be the best person they can be,

  188. by whatever your standard is of trying to be as good as you can be,

  189. if you think that by doing that,

  190. you are good enough for God,

  191. what Jesus says is,

  192. you don't even know what you need.

  193. You don't need my salvation,

  194. because you think you can save yourself.

  195. And that's a scary place to be.

  196. Jesus doesn't celebrate over those people.

  197. But for those who know that they need him,

  198. for those who come,

  199. turn away from this life of independence,

  200. and this life of sin,

  201. and this life apart from God's commands,

  202. and his instructions,

  203. Jesus says,

  204. come,

  205. I'm going to throw a party.

  206. I'm going to throw a celebration.

  207. Think.

  208. I want you to think for a minute.

  209. What is it that we do in our culture

  210. when we really,

  211. truly celebrate?

  212. Right?

  213. It happens in,

  214. I think there's some,

  215. there's some unique circumstances in our culture today,

  216. where you see real celebrations.

  217. I was rooting for the Golden State Warriors,

  218. but when the Cleveland Cavaliers

  219. won the NBA championship a few weeks ago,

  220. when they arrived home on their plane from California,

  221. thousands,

  222. literally thousands of people

  223. were waiting for them at the airport,

  224. on the runway,

  225. waiting to cheer for them.

  226. And when they emerged from their plane,

  227. people erupted with joy.

  228. with shouts of praise,

  229. with gladness in their hearts.

  230. The poor people of Cleveland

  231. who've been waiting over 50 years

  232. for some championship to celebrate.

  233. And finally,

  234. LeBron James,

  235. the Savior,

  236. came back and gave them one,

  237. and they celebrated.

  238. And they had a huge party.

  239. And they went from the airport

  240. to a ticker tape parade

  241. in downtown Cleveland.

  242. And they worshipped

  243. the Cleveland Cavaliers.

  244. And it's the same thing that happens

  245. when Beyonce gets up in a concert.

  246. It's honestly the same thing that happens

  247. at a Donald Trump rally.

  248. This celebration.

  249. Now, let me say this.

  250. None of these things are celebrations

  251. that have their object placed

  252. in something worthy

  253. of what they're giving.

  254. Right?

  255. All of these celebrations

  256. are giving praise and glory

  257. and rejoicing in something

  258. far less important.

  259. But I want you to see

  260. that when we use this to celebrate,

  261. sometimes we can be so stayed in church.

  262. We think, well, you know,

  263. those people out there can be crazy,

  264. but we have to be sort of,

  265. you know,

  266. buttoned up and all serious

  267. about worship.

  268. You know?

  269. And worshipping God

  270. should be a celebration

  271. because the God that we serve

  272. celebrates.

  273. And what you see humanly

  274. expressed in our culture

  275. is something that we will do

  276. even much more greater in heaven

  277. and what we can do

  278. even now on this earth.

  279. This is what God does.

  280. And this is God's heart.

  281. This is what he thinks

  282. when one sinner

  283. turns from their sin,

  284. repents,

  285. changes their mind

  286. and says,

  287. I'm not going to live that way anymore.

  288. I'm going to come to God.

  289. God's heart is rejoicing.

  290. What a wonderful thing it is

  291. when someone who is lost

  292. is found spiritually.

  293. This leads us to the third parable.

  294. As Jesus takes this point

  295. and he expands on it more.

  296. And one of the things

  297. that's so beautiful about this

  298. is Jesus is a masterful storyteller.

  299. And he takes this core concept

  300. and he pushes it even further

  301. into the hearts

  302. of those who are listening

  303. and hopefully into our hearts as well.

  304. Let's look at it together

  305. and read the rest,

  306. the third parable

  307. starting in verse 11.

  308. Let's look at it together.

  309. And he said,

  310. there was a man

  311. who had two sons

  312. and the younger of them

  313. said to his father,

  314. father,

  315. give me the share,

  316. the property

  317. that is coming to me.

  318. And he divided his property

  319. between them.

  320. Not many days later,

  321. the younger son

  322. gathered all he had

  323. and took a journey

  324. into a far country

  325. and there he squandered his property

  326. in reckless living.

  327. And when he had spent everything,

  328. a severe famine arose

  329. in that country

  330. and he began to be in need.

  331. So he went

  332. and hired himself out

  333. to one of the citizens

  334. of that country

  335. who sent him

  336. into his fields

  337. to feed pigs.

  338. And he was longing

  339. to be fed

  340. with the pods

  341. that the pigs ate

  342. and no one

  343. gave him anything.

  344. But when he came

  345. to himself,

  346. he said,

  347. how many of my father's

  348. hired servants

  349. have more than enough bread?

  350. But I perish here

  351. with hunger.

  352. I will arise

  353. and go to my father

  354. and I will say to him,

  355. father,

  356. I have sinned

  357. against heaven

  358. and before you.

  359. I am no longer worthy

  360. to be called your son.

  361. Treat me as one

  362. of your hired servants.

  363. And he rose

  364. and came to his father.

  365. But while he was still

  366. a long way off,

  367. his father saw him,

  368. felt compassion,

  369. and ran

  370. and embraced him

  371. and kissed him.

  372. And the son said to him,

  373. father,

  374. I have sinned

  375. against heaven

  376. and before you.

  377. I am no longer worthy

  378. to be called your son.

  379. But the father

  380. said to his servant,

  381. bring quickly

  382. the best robe

  383. and put it on him

  384. and a ring on his hand

  385. and the shoes

  386. on his feet

  387. and bring the fattened calf

  388. and kill it

  389. and let us eat

  390. and celebrate

  391. for this is my son

  392. who is dead.

  393. For this my son

  394. was dead

  395. and is alive again.

  396. He was lost

  397. and is found

  398. and they began

  399. to celebrate.

  400. Now,

  401. his older son

  402. was in the field

  403. and as he came

  404. and drew near

  405. to the house,

  406. he heard music

  407. and dancing.

  408. And he called

  409. one of the servants

  410. and asked

  411. what these things meant.

  412. And he said to him,

  413. your brother has come

  414. and your father

  415. has killed

  416. the fattened calf

  417. because he received

  418. him back safe

  419. and sound.

  420. But he was angry

  421. and refused

  422. to go in.

  423. His father came out

  424. and entreated him.

  425. But he answered

  426. his father,

  427. look,

  428. these many years

  429. I have served you.

  430. I have never

  431. disobeyed your command.

  432. Yet you never

  433. gave me a young goat

  434. that I might celebrate

  435. with my friends.

  436. When this son

  437. of yours

  438. came

  439. who has devoured

  440. your property

  441. with prostitutes,

  442. you killed

  443. the fattened calf

  444. for him.

  445. And he said to him,

  446. son,

  447. you are always

  448. with me

  449. and all that is mine

  450. is yours.

  451. It was fitting

  452. to celebrate

  453. and be glad

  454. for this your brother

  455. was dead

  456. and is alive.

  457. He was lost

  458. and is found.

  459. So you see

  460. that the principle

  461. is the same.

  462. There is a celebration

  463. about one

  464. who was lost

  465. who is now found.

  466. But,

  467. Jesus,

  468. the master storyteller,

  469. put some twists

  470. in here

  471. and in doing so

  472. he digs into our heart

  473. a little bit more.

  474. First thing

  475. I want you to see

  476. is that

  477. the thing

  478. that was lost,

  479. a son,

  480. wasn't just misplaced.

  481. He didn't just

  482. wander off

  483. like a sheep.

  484. It wasn't just

  485. dropped under the counter.

  486. The son

  487. was culpable.

  488. He was responsible

  489. for being lost.

  490. And not only

  491. was he responsible

  492. for it,

  493. he was reprehensible

  494. in it.

  495. When he comes,

  496. when you go

  497. to your father

  498. in this culture

  499. and you ask him

  500. for your inheritance

  501. now,

  502. it's like saying,

  503. Dad,

  504. I wish you were dead.

  505. I just want your stuff.

  506. I wish you were dead.

  507. It is an act

  508. of disowning your family

  509. and simply

  510. in a mercenary way

  511. wanting to get

  512. your inheritance

  513. without anything else.

  514. Not only did he then

  515. take that inheritance,

  516. but then he showed himself

  517. to be a wretch.

  518. He went and he squandered it

  519. in the worst possible way.

  520. And then,

  521. at the end of it,

  522. this good Jewish boy

  523. ends up in a field

  524. feeding pigs.

  525. Now,

  526. you may not know much

  527. about Jewish culture,

  528. but pigs were unclean animals,

  529. unacceptable to be eaten.

  530. You wouldn't touch them.

  531. You wouldn't raise them.

  532. You wouldn't have anything

  533. to do with them.

  534. The fact

  535. that he was

  536. feeding pigs

  537. made him

  538. the most

  539. pitiable

  540. and the most

  541. despisable person

  542. in the story.

  543. And as you're hearing

  544. this story

  545. as a Jewish person,

  546. you're thinking,

  547. I don't want him

  548. to be saved.

  549. I don't want him

  550. to be found.

  551. He doesn't deserve it.

  552. He's left himself.

  553. He's made his bed

  554. and he should lie in it.

  555. And so,

  556. when the son

  557. comes to his senses,

  558. when the son

  559. in his heart

  560. repents

  561. of his sin

  562. and turns back

  563. and physically

  564. turns his way around

  565. and walks

  566. the long road

  567. back home,

  568. there's this

  569. anticipation

  570. that the other two stories

  571. don't pull out.

  572. How will the father respond?

  573. Will it be the same

  574. or will it be different?

  575. Will it be,

  576. well,

  577. you got what's coming

  578. to you,

  579. didn't you?

  580. Isn't that what

  581. you would expect

  582. from God

  583. at this point?

  584. But no.

  585. The son even

  586. prepares himself

  587. to humble himself.

  588. The son comes back.

  589. His repentance

  590. is true.

  591. He doesn't come back

  592. not in a demanding

  593. sense of entitlement

  594. like,

  595. I'm your son.

  596. I know I blew it

  597. but you should take me back

  598. and treat me

  599. like I'm your son.

  600. He knows he blew it.

  601. His repentance

  602. is real

  603. and his heart

  604. is broken

  605. and he's just hoping

  606. that he might get

  607. undeserved favor

  608. from his father

  609. in the form of

  610. at least treat me

  611. like your servant.

  612. At least give me

  613. food to eat

  614. so that I won't starve.

  615. There's a reality

  616. about his repentance.

  617. But we still don't know

  618. how the father

  619. will respond.

  620. Till we get to,

  621. where is it?

  622. Let's look at it together.

  623. Verse 20.

  624. He arose

  625. and he came

  626. to his father

  627. but while he was still

  628. a long way off

  629. his father saw him

  630. and ran

  631. and embraced him

  632. and kissed him.

  633. The father's love

  634. is the same

  635. celebrating love

  636. that we saw

  637. in the first two parables.

  638. He comes

  639. and he runs out

  640. and the son

  641. begins his speech.

  642. I know I've blown it.

  643. I know I'm not doing it.

  644. He doesn't even get

  645. to give his request

  646. to treat me

  647. as a servant.

  648. The father

  649. cuts him off

  650. in the middle

  651. of his speech

  652. and says,

  653. no, no, no.

  654. I'm going to treat you

  655. like a son.

  656. The robe

  657. and the ring

  658. and the sandals

  659. are all symbols

  660. of being accepted

  661. in the family.

  662. You are now

  663. an honored part

  664. of this family.

  665. the son

  666. doesn't just say,

  667. yeah, you can come

  668. and live

  669. in the garage

  670. apartment.

  671. I'm not going to

  672. really let you

  673. in the house

  674. but you can at least

  675. get close.

  676. But he says,

  677. yes, it's a full

  678. embracing of the son.

  679. And he lavishes

  680. upon him

  681. these tokens

  682. of acceptance

  683. and of belonging

  684. in the family

  685. and then he lavishes

  686. on them

  687. the celebration

  688. of killing

  689. a fatted calf.

  690. Something that they

  691. would have raised

  692. for a special occasion.

  693. It wasn't just a,

  694. well, you're back.

  695. Here's your hamburger

  696. helper for the day.

  697. He pulled out

  698. all the stops.

  699. They went to Pepe's.

  700. They didn't go

  701. to Papa John's.

  702. You know,

  703. he pulled out

  704. all the stops

  705. to get the best

  706. celebration

  707. for that.

  708. And you would think,

  709. wow,

  710. God's love,

  711. his joy

  712. over the return

  713. of a repentant sinner

  714. is so great.

  715. You think,

  716. that's great.

  717. That's the end

  718. of the story,

  719. right?

  720. No.

  721. Jesus has one more

  722. twist for us.

  723. One more exploration

  724. into our heart

  725. as he looks

  726. into this.

  727. Because if you look

  728. in verse 25,

  729. you realize

  730. there's not one story

  731. in the story

  732. of the prodigal son.

  733. There are two sons.

  734. And the older son,

  735. who has always

  736. stayed at home,

  737. who has always

  738. been dutiful,

  739. who has always

  740. done what is right,

  741. but has clearly

  742. not quite acted

  743. like a real son.

  744. when he comes,

  745. he has the emotion

  746. that maybe many

  747. of us had

  748. when you think

  749. about the younger son.

  750. He doesn't deserve it.

  751. He should be

  752. thrown out.

  753. The wretch,

  754. he ruined our family,

  755. took half of our fortune.

  756. He embodies

  757. that heart

  758. when he hears

  759. about what has happened.

  760. It's interesting.

  761. The father then,

  762. just as he ran

  763. to the older,

  764. the younger son

  765. as he was returning,

  766. now again,

  767. the father goes

  768. out of the house

  769. to the older son,

  770. doesn't he?

  771. He goes out

  772. to him

  773. in an attempt

  774. to bring him in.

  775. He says,

  776. your brother

  777. is back

  778. and we're

  779. throwing a party.

  780. Come on in.

  781. verse 28,

  782. but he was angry.

  783. Look,

  784. this many years

  785. I've served you

  786. and I never disobeyed you.

  787. You never gave me anything.

  788. It almost seems like

  789. the older brother,

  790. like the younger brother,

  791. wanted his father

  792. more for the stuff

  793. than for the relationship.

  794. That the older brother

  795. wanted all the perks

  796. of being the dude

  797. and the things

  798. that he had earned

  799. by doing the right thing,

  800. not a relationship

  801. with the father,

  802. but the status

  803. and the position

  804. and the privilege

  805. and the stuff

  806. that comes with

  807. being that dutiful father.

  808. And then verse 30,

  809. you see the depth

  810. of his heart.

  811. But when this son

  812. of yours,

  813. right,

  814. I have disowned him.

  815. He is not part

  816. of my family.

  817. This son of yours

  818. come back.

  819. You celebrated.

  820. And he says,

  821. I am not going to do that.

  822. And the parable ends

  823. not with a conclusion,

  824. but with a hanging storyline

  825. because it ends

  826. with the father saying,

  827. son,

  828. you are always with me.

  829. It has always been.

  830. You've always had everything

  831. that I've had,

  832. but it was fitting

  833. to celebrate

  834. your son,

  835. your brother.

  836. You notice how

  837. the father calls him

  838. your brother,

  839. not my son,

  840. but your brother.

  841. Your brother who was lost

  842. is now found.

  843. You,

  844. it is fitting

  845. to celebrate that.

  846. And there is

  847. an inherent invitation

  848. at the end

  849. of this parable

  850. because it doesn't resolve.

  851. If you know anything

  852. about storytelling,

  853. this doesn't wrap up.

  854. This is the climax

  855. of this part of the story.

  856. The tension is raised

  857. to this point.

  858. The question is,

  859. how will

  860. the younger brother

  861. or the older brother

  862. respond?

  863. How will he respond

  864. to his father's expression

  865. of welcome and embrace?

  866. And the story ends.

  867. And I think,

  868. remember how I told you

  869. that in the audience

  870. there were two kinds

  871. of people.

  872. There were the tax collectors

  873. and sinners

  874. and there were the Pharisees.

  875. And what Jesus is saying

  876. in this story

  877. is that God's heart

  878. for all people,

  879. both the people

  880. who know

  881. that they've completely

  882. blown it

  883. and wonder if God

  884. could ever accept them again

  885. and the righteous people

  886. who think

  887. they don't need God,

  888. think that they have

  889. earned his favor

  890. by the way

  891. that they have lived,

  892. think that they are

  893. good enough

  894. on their own.

  895. The Father goes out

  896. to both of them

  897. in love

  898. and calls both of them

  899. to repent.

  900. To repent

  901. of your wild,

  902. sinful living

  903. and to repent

  904. of your best righteousness

  905. and to say,

  906. come in.

  907. Repent from your sinful

  908. self-justification

  909. and come in

  910. to the family.

  911. Come in

  912. to the household

  913. and come be a part

  914. of the celebration

  915. because I am a God

  916. who celebrates

  917. things that were lost

  918. that have now been found.

  919. I am the God

  920. who celebrates

  921. sinners

  922. who repent

  923. and come back

  924. and turn

  925. to me.

  926. Which, of course,

  927. leaves us

  928. with a question.

  929. Who are we

  930. in this story?

  931. Who are you

  932. in this story?

  933. Have you wandered

  934. off to a far land?

  935. Far from God?

  936. Doing your own thing?

  937. Wasting your life?

  938. There is a God

  939. who is calling you

  940. to turn to Him

  941. and to return to Him.

  942. He is ready

  943. to run to you

  944. and to embrace you

  945. and bring Him back.

  946. Or are you

  947. the religious

  948. dutiful type?

  949. You have done

  950. everything right.

  951. You cannot quite

  952. understand

  953. why life

  954. is not working well.

  955. Maybe you are one

  956. who hates

  957. to be corrected

  958. and can never

  959. be wrong.

  960. Thinks that God

  961. agrees with you

  962. all the time.

  963. These were the

  964. Pharisees of the day

  965. who thought

  966. that by their

  967. obedience

  968. by their

  969. descendants

  970. from Abraham

  971. because of their

  972. position in society

  973. because of their

  974. religious observance

  975. that they were

  976. acceptable.

  977. It's so easy

  978. isn't it

  979. in our culture

  980. today maybe

  981. to think that

  982. if I'm a good

  983. church goer

  984. if I go to church

  985. and I give my money

  986. and I try to be

  987. a good person

  988. isn't that enough?

  989. Doesn't God

  990. accept me

  991. because I am

  992. those things?

  993. And what Jesus

  994. tells us is

  995. no

  996. no

  997. you need to

  998. repent of those

  999. good things

  1000. as much as

  1001. the wild

  1002. profligate

  1003. has to repent

  1004. of their sin

  1005. but the heart

  1006. of the Father

  1007. is the same

  1008. if you repent

  1009. and come to me

  1010. I will accept you.

  1011. but friends

  1012. Jesus doesn't

  1013. explain it fully

  1014. in this story

  1015. he doesn't

  1016. tell us

  1017. exactly how

  1018. but in the

  1019. storyline of Luke

  1020. we know why Luke

  1021. has put this here

  1022. in this story

  1023. because where is

  1024. Jesus headed?

  1025. He's headed to

  1026. Jerusalem

  1027. and what is he

  1028. going to do

  1029. in Jerusalem?

  1030. He is going to

  1031. go be crucified

  1032. on a cross

1033. and up on that cross

  1034. he's going to

  1035. cry out

  1036. my God

  1037. my God

  1038. why have you

  1039. forsaken me?

  1040. Father

  1041. into your hand

  1042. I commit my spirit

  1043. this perfect son

  1044. who did actually

  1045. live the perfect

  1046. life of obedience

  1047. who was the

  1048. older brother

  1049. for all of humanity

  1050. by his perfection

  1051. he

  1052. was cast

  1053. out

  1054. of the house

  1055. so to speak

  1056. he

  1057. was removed

  1058. from the

  1059. father's favor

  1060. and the

  1061. father's embrace

  1062. as he hung

  1063. on the cross

  1064. taking the

  1065. judgment

  1066. for our

  1067. sin

  1068. this

  1069. Jesus

  1070. as he's

  1071. heading towards

  1072. that event

  1073. is telling

  1074. this story

  1075. so that

  1076. us

  1077. and all

  1078. who heard

  1079. him

  1080. when we

  1081. when

  1082. now looking

  1083. back

  1084. we saw

  1085. what Jesus

  1086. was going

  1087. to do

  1088. now we

  1089. know what

  1090. he has

  1091. done

  1092. he has

  1093. died

  1094. and he

  1095. has risen

  1096. from the

  1097. dead

  1098. and he

  1099. now has

  1100. removed

  1101. all of the

  1102. offense

  1103. of both

  1104. our

  1105. wild living

  1106. and

  1107. our

  1108. self

  1109. righteousness

  1110. he has

  1111. died for

  1112. both of

  1113. these things

  1114. and risen

  1115. from the

  1116. dead

  1117. so that

  1118. he might

  1119. be the

  1120. firstborn

  1121. of a

  1122. whole

  1123. family

  1124. of God

  1125. and so

  1126. he is

  1127. not ashamed

  1128. to call

  1129. us

  1130. brother

  1131. and sister

  1132. as we

  1133. repent

  1134. of our

  1135. sin

  1136. and come

  1137. to the

  1138. foot of

  1139. the cross

  1140. and celebrate

  1141. what Jesus

  1142. has done

  1143. for us

  1144. because

  1145. through

  1146. this

  1147. now the

  1148. father

  1149. opens

  1150. wide

  1151. his

  1152. embrace

  1153. and says

  1154. come

  1155. to me

  1156. come

  1157. to me

  1158. and be

  1159. my son

  1160. my daughter

  1161. in my

  1162. family

  1163. forever

  1164. friends

  1165. this is

  1166. the good

  1167. news

  1168. of the

  1169. gospel

  1170. and this

  1171. is the

  1172. hope

  1173. that we

  1174. have

  1175. and this

  1176. is what

  1177. Luke 15

  1178. is telling

  1179. us about

  1180. the heart

  1181. of the

  1182. father

  1183. let's

  1184. pray

  1185. Lord we

  1186. thank you

  1187. we thank you

  1188. for this

  1189. beautiful

  1190. parable

  1191. and for

  1192. the power

  1193. that it

  1194. has

  1195. for it

  1196. reminds us

  1197. Lord

  1198. of our

  1199. self

  1200. righteousness

  1201. it points

  1202. to how

  1203. easily

  1204. we try

  1205. to justify

  1206. ourselves

  1207. Lord

  1208. and it

  1209. points us

  1210. to you

  1211. and to the

  1212. kind of God

  1213. you are

  1214. that you

  1215. celebrate

  1216. us

  1217. Lord

  1218. that you

  1219. rejoice

  1220. when we

  1221. are lost

  1222. and then

  1223. are found

  1224. by you

  1225. Lord

  1226. because

  1227. you are

  1228. a great

  1229. God

  1230. who delights

  1231. to save

  1232. your

  1233. creation

  1234. Lord

  1235. we praise

  1236. you for

  1237. that

  1238. Lord

  1239. help

  1240. us

  1241. I pray

  1242. tonight

  1243. to know

  1244. Lord

  1245. that this

  1246. is what

  1247. you think

  1248. of us

  1249. that you

  1250. know

  1251. our

  1252. sin

  1253. you know

  1254. how bad

  1255. we are

  1256. and Lord

  1257. you even

  1258. know how

  1259. good we

  1260. are and

  1261. see how

  1262. far short

  1263. it falls

  1264. but Lord

  1265. you love

  1266. us

  1267. and you've

  1268. opened up

  1269. your embrace

  1270. for us

  1271. in Christ

  1272. Lord

  1273. may we

  1274. repent

  1275. and turn

  1276. to you

  1277. tonight

  1278. we pray

  1279. this in

  1280. Jesus name

  1281. amen

  1282. well friends

  1283. we have

  1284. the privilege

  1285. and the honor

  1286. of

  1287. it's fitting

  1288. isn't it

  1289. to celebrate

  1290. the Lord's

  1291. table

  1292. Lord's

  1293. supper

  1294. after this

  1295. after looking

  1296. at this

  1297. story

  1298. we have

  1299. the joy

  1300. of being

  1301. able to

  1302. think of

  1303. this

  1304. as we

  1305. come to

  1306. the Lord's

  1307. table

  1308. what the

  1309. Lord's

  1310. table

  1311. is

  1312. a

  1313. remembrance

  1314. remembrance

  1315. a remembrance

  1316. of what

  1317. Jesus

  1318. has done

  1319. for us

  1320. a remembrance

  1321. of

  1322. a reminder

  1323. for us

  1324. on a regular

  1325. basis

  1326. this is why

  1327. as the church

  1328. we celebrate

  1329. the Lord's

  1330. supper

  1331. on a regular

  1332. basis

  1333. so that

  1334. we can

  1335. so that

  1336. we can

  1337. remember

  1338. because when

  1339. we remember

  1340. we are shaken

  1341. out of our

  1342. self-righteousness

  1343. we are

  1344. freed

  1345. from

  1346. the shame

  1347. that might

  1348. keep us

  1349. from coming

  1350. to God

  1351. because this

  1352. reminds us

  1353. that at

  1354. the cross

  1355. God dealt

  1356. with our

  1357. sin

  1358. decisively

  1359. forever

  1360. if you are

  1361. here tonight

  1362. and you have

  1363. placed your

  1364. faith in

  1365. Jesus Christ

  1366. as your

  1367. Lord and

  1368. Savior

  1369. then this

  1370. table is

  1371. for you

  1372. maybe you've

  1373. been wandering

  1374. a little

  1375. maybe you've

  1376. been convicted

  1377. tonight that

  1378. you've had a

  1379. heart of

  1380. self-righteousness

  1381. and tried to

  1382. please God

  1383. and be acceptable

  1384. in your own

  1385. but if you've

  1386. placed your

  1387. faith in

  1388. Jesus Christ

  1389. repent of

  1390. those sins

  1391. and receive

  1392. these elements

  1393. receive them

  1394. as an act

  1395. of grace

  1396. and a reminder

  1397. of God's

  1398. grace to you

  1399. if you're

  1400. here tonight

  1401. and you

  1402. haven't made

  1403. that decision

  1404. if you have

  1405. not placed

  1406. your faith

  1407. in Christ

  1408. then what we

  1409. ask is that

  1410. you wouldn't

  1411. take these

  1412. things

  1413. because they're

  1414. by taking

  1415. them

  1416. it's an

  1417. expression

  1418. of faith

  1419. and belief

  1420. we don't

  1421. want you

  1422. to do

  1423. that

  1424. lightly

  1425. so if

  1426. you haven't

  1427. placed your

  1428. faith in

  1429. Christ

  1430. we ask

  1431. just let

  1432. it pass

  1433. by

  1434. and instead

  1435. consider

  1436. consider what

  1437. we've talked

  1438. about tonight

  1439. consider this

  1440. parable

  1441. consider

  1442. Jesus

  1443. invitation

  1444. instead of

  1445. taking these

  1446. things

  1447. maybe you

  1448. in your

  1449. heart of

  1450. hearts

  1451. as you pray

  1452. before the

  1453. Lord

  1454. would take

  1455. Christ

  1456. to be your

  1457. savior

  1458. tonight

  1459. that would

  1460. be a

  1461. wonderful

  1462. thing

  1463. apostle Paul

  1464. writes this

  1465. for I

  1466. receive from

  1467. the Lord

  1468. what I

  1469. also

  1470. deliver to

  1471. you

  1472. that

  1473. the Lord

  1474. Jesus

  1475. on the

  1476. night

  1477. when he

  1478. was

  1479. betrayed

  1480. took bread

  1481. and when he

  1482. given thanks

  1483. he broke

  1484. it and said

  1485. this is my

  1486. body which

  1487. is for you

  1488. do this

  1489. in remembrance

  1490. of me

  1491. we'll pass

  1492. out the

  1493. bread

  1494. together

  1495. and then

  1496. you can

  1497. hold on

  1498. to it

  1499. and we'll

  1500. eat it

  1501. together

  1502. and as

  1503. we do

  1504. so we

  1505. can

  1506. continue

  1507. to

  1508. worship

  1509. so
