  1. all may learn and all be encouraged. And the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.

  2. For God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,

  3. the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should

  4. be in submission as the law says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them

  5. ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

  6. Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached?

  7. If anyone thinks that he is a prophet or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing

  8. to you are a command of the Lord. If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.

  9. So my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy and do not forbid speaking in tongues,

  10. but all things should be done decently and in order.

  11. Well, friends, I don't know about you, but this week I've been particularly struck by how much

  12. chaos there seems to be in the world. For weeks we've been hearing about the chaotic events in the UK,

  13. the Brexit vote, and now the turmoil over choosing a new prime minister.

  14. And much closer to home, we've been witnessing even more chaos, it seems,

  15. with the tragic shootings in Texas and Minnesota and Louisiana.

  16. On and on it seems to come.

  17. And you know, these are just the chaotic things that happen to hit the headlines.

  18. How much more are we not reading about in other parts of the world, in other cities of our country,

  19. even behind the closed doors of our own neighborhoods?

  20. Confusion, disorder, chaos.

  21. And here we gather this morning, the church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  22. And what should characterize our gathering?

  23. Should the church just be more of the same?

  24. Another place where chaos is boiling below the surface,

  25. ready to break out at any moment, like water bursting through a rusty pipe.

  26. Too often, you know, this has been the case.

  27. Too often the church has looked just like the world in this regard.

  28. A place of enmity and strife and confusion and chaos.

  29. But our text this morning speaks to us in both challenging and inviting words.

  30. The church should be a place, we read here, not of chaos, but of order.

  31. An order that not just the church, but our world so desperately needs.

  32. You'll remember if you've been with us over the last few weeks,

  33. that Paul here is coming to the conclusion of his instruction to the church here in Corinth

  34. on the topic of spiritual gifts.

  35. And in verse 39 through 40, at the very end of the text, Paul, hopefully, sums it up as clearly as he possibly can.

  36. Here's the big idea that he's been sort of working towards this whole chapter.

  37. You ready?

  38. Here it is.

  39. Earnestly desire to prophesy.

  40. That is, to speak timely, insightful, spirit-led words of encouragement and upbuilding.

  41. Don't forbid speaking in tongues.

  42. Okay, don't totally rule that out.

  43. But all things should be done decently and in order.

  44. Or as another translation puts it,

  45. everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

  46. So when it comes to spiritual gifts and public worship,

  47. Paul says the bottom line is,

  48. all things should be done decently and in order,

  49. in a fitting and orderly way.

  50. Order!

  51. Okay.

  52. But why?

  53. Are we talking here about order just for order's sake?

  54. Is Paul just sort of being a stick in the mud here?

  55. A little nervous about things getting out of hand?

  56. Like the school principal who walks into the noisy lunchroom and tells everyone to quiet down and stop having a good time.

  57. This is school after all.

  58. No, you see, that's not it at all.

  59. You see, if the public worship of the church is not meant to be a sort of chaotic frenzy on the one hand,

  60. neither is it meant to be a dry and stiff formalism on the other.

  61. I mean, think about it, friends.

  62. Nothing about the worship of the one true God ought to be boring and dry.

  63. We are worshiping God, after all.

  64. The creator of galaxies and quarks and canyons and everything that takes your breath away.

  65. The author behind all poetry and music and every beauty you've ever seen.

  66. The one we're told in the book of Hebrews is a consuming fire.

  67. There ought to be nothing boring here.

  68. And forgive us, preachers, if sometimes we bore you.

  69. We're falling short of our calling.

  70. Order for order's sake, not quite.

  71. So what is the reason?

  72. Why orderly worship of all the things that Paul could drive home?

  73. Well, our text gives us three reasons.

  74. And the first one is this.

  75. Do all things decently and in order because orderly worship, Paul seems to say,

  76. lets everyone take part.

  77. Jump back to the beginning of our passage.

  78. The vision here is of an incredibly participatory worship, is it not?

  79. The way Paul would have it, corporate worship is not a spectator sport.

  80. It's not like showing up to see a movie at a movie theater where you sit back,

  81. eat some popcorn, and hope to be sort of mildly entertained for the next hour and a half or two hours.

  82. You hope not two hours, right, when you come to church.

  83. No, the way Paul would have it, the way the New Testament would have it,

  84. corporate worship is more like showing up at one of those murder mystery dinners

  85. where everyone has a role to play in the unfolding drama.

  86. You show up and you're expected to participate.

  87. And if you don't, well, you just don't have that much fun, do you?

  88. Everyone comes with something to share.

  89. You see that in verse 26.

  90. And for Paul, that's a good thing.

  91. Paul doesn't say, oh, you came with a hymn.

  92. No, no, no, no, no.

  93. You're just supposed to come with your popcorn bucket so you can sit back and enjoy the show.

  94. Okay.

  95. Now, if that's the case, if everyone comes with something to share,

  96. if this is meant to be a participatory gathering,

  97. at first, a little bit of chaos might seem like the best way to let everybody jump in.

  98. Why have any guidelines or structure or order or service leaders?

  99. Why not just let the spirit move?

  100. Won't that ensure that everyone gets a chance to participate?

  101. But, you know, the reality is that's almost never how it works out in practice.

  102. Chaos almost always ends up meaning that the strong and the domineering are the ones who steal the show.

  103. And they run roughshod over the humbler and the quieter ones.

  104. You know, if the teacher in the classroom never says,

  105. why don't we hear from someone who hasn't shared yet?

  106. It's always going to be that obnoxious kid in the front row who blurts out the answers to all the questions.

  107. Isn't it?

  108. I know, because I was too often that kid.

  109. So, you see, order in corporate worship ensures that the loudest voices,

  110. the most domineering, pushy personalities, don't monopolize the meeting,

  111. which seems to be what was taking place at Corinth.

  112. In other words, an orderly service ensures that the quieter, humbler voices that we need to hear

  113. can also be heard.

  114. So then, in verses 27 through 31, Paul gives us some ground rules.

  115. Only let two or three speak in tongues or in prophecy.

  116. And make sure they speak in turn, not over each other, okay?

  117. Take note of how Paul is implying self-control here.

  118. If you want to do, if you can't happen to do what you want to do at this gathering,

  119. just wait for another opportunity.

  120. And by the way, tongues, speakers, you need an interpreter.

  121. If no interpreter is present, stay silent.

  122. Oh, and prophecy, speakers, look,

  123. you can wait till someone is done speaking before you start speaking.

  124. And don't blab on and on and on and on and on and on.

  125. That seems to be what verse 32 is all about.

  126. It's a bit confusing on the surface.

  127. The spirit of prophets are subject to prophets.

  128. I think what Paul means there is that you, prophet, whoever you might be,

  129. you, speaker, you are in control of your own spirit.

  130. That is, you don't just have to blurt something out

  131. because there's something on your heart or in your spirit to say.

  132. You can wait.

  133. You can exercise self-control here.

  134. But now note, even if you're not speaking,

  135. Paul seems to be very strongly seeing that you're still participating.

  136. You may be quiet, but you're not passive.

  137. The tongue speakers are still speaking to themselves and God.

  138. Those who are not prophesying are weighing what is said.

  139. The vision here is of a gathering where everyone is engaged in heart and mind

  140. with all that's being said.

  141. Okay, fair enough.

  142. Now, at this point, you might be thinking,

  143. wait a minute.

  144. I've been coming to Trinity for fill in the blank.

  145. Three months, three years, 30 years.

  146. Our Sunday morning services don't look anything like this.

  147. Right?

  148. Does that mean we have it completely wrong?

  149. Are we missing the mark here?

  150. Next Sunday, should we just set up a microphone in the middle of this stage

  151. stage and say, okay, who's got a word?

  152. Well, I think there are a few things to say to that.

  153. First, we would actually love to see Sundays as a time

  154. where more people are sharing encouraging words

  155. to the congregation up front.

  156. And not just when someone becomes a member or gets baptized,

  157. as great as those times of sharing are.

  158. But also, maybe when the Lord is just teaching you something

  159. that will be edifying to share with the whole congregation.

  160. What might that look like?

  161. Well, the Lord's been teaching you something

  162. that you think might be edifying to share with the whole congregation.

  163. Come talk to one of the elders

  164. so that we can pray about the best means

  165. of actually communicating that to your church family

  166. so we can help you discern the best means of building up your body.

  167. Okay, the second thing to say

  168. is that this gathering on Sundays

  169. isn't the only gathering of our church.

  170. There are different sorts of gatherings

  171. that can have different sorts of purposes

  172. and that give us different opportunities

  173. to use our gifts in different sorts of ways.

  174. In the church where I became a Christian,

  175. there was a midweek service on Wednesday nights.

  176. How many people here went to a church growing up

  177. that was like Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night?

  178. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.

  179. Some of you are like,

  180. why would you ever go to church three times a week?

  181. That's nuts.

  182. Okay, well, the church I went to,

  183. we had this midweek service, right?

  184. And I'll tell you,

  185. that midweek service looked a bit like 1 Corinthians 14.

  186. Instead of the songs being planned ahead of time,

  187. people would call out hymn numbers.

  188. And then we'd hope the pianist kind of knew that one.

  189. Then there was an open time

  190. when what we called testimonies were given.

  191. And when prayers were prayed.

  192. And when scripture passages were shared and taught.

  193. And you know, here at Trinity,

  194. if you become a part of a midweek small group,

  195. you might see something a lot more like 1 Corinthians 14.

  196. In fact, I will say from personal experience,

  197. I have seen the gift of prophecy at work

  198. all the time in my small group.

  199. I don't think the members of my small group

  200. would have necessarily called it that.

  201. But if we understand prophecy,

  202. as we've been saying over the last few weeks,

  203. as timely, insightful, spirit-filled words

  204. that apply the truths of scripture

  205. to a specific situation,

  206. then I've seen that again and again and again.

  207. Someone struggling with a sin

  208. and a brother or sister shares a word

  209. that's very encouraging and challenging.

  210. Someone wrestling with anxiety or fear

  211. and someone saying,

  212. I've struggled with that too.

  213. Here's how the Lord has helped me.

  214. Someone just over our Bible study time

  215. sharing something

  216. that seems to hit the nail on the head

  217. for all of us

  218. and it ends up being woven through

  219. a lot of our prayers

  220. later in our time together.

  221. I've seen the gift of prophecy at work

  222. in our small group again and again and again.

  223. No one has spoken in tongues yet.

  224. I don't think anyone has the gift of interpretation

  225. that I know of,

  226. so, you know, we're good there.

  227. We don't need to go there.

  228. But it could happen, right?

  229. And then we'd say,

  230. does anybody have the gift of interpretation?

  231. And maybe someone would.

  232. Who knows?

  233. But the point is

  234. that these smaller gatherings

  235. provide good context

  236. to exercise gifts in different ways.

  237. Now, it's also clear from the New Testament,

  238. if you look at the book of Acts

  239. or the pastoral epistles, for example,

  240. that biblical preaching and teaching,

  241. sustained exposition of the Bible,

  242. and encouraging one another

  243. through song and scripture readings

  244. and taking up a collection,

  245. these are also part of a healthy,

  246. public worship life at the church.

  247. And our Sunday morning gatherings

  248. seem like a good time

  249. to devote to those things.

  250. Now, of course,

  251. we could do all of those things

  252. in one big service.

  253. But with 200 to 300 people here on a Sunday,

  254. that would probably make for a really long service.

  255. Right?

  256. And fortunately,

  257. lots of people would probably be too intimidated

  258. to speak up and exercise their gifts.

  259. So,

  260. we meet more than once.

  261. And we meet in lots of different ways.

  262. We meet in different forms

  263. so that we can embody the breadth

  264. of what a healthy church gathering looks like.

  265. Okay, one more point to be made

  266. as we think about the sort of,

  267. maybe dissonance

  268. between what we see in 1 Corinthians 14

  269. and what we see here.

  270. And that point is that

  271. as we think

  272. of how our Sunday morning service

  273. is compared to what we see here

  274. in 1 Corinthians 14,

  275. I think it's true

  276. that orderly worship,

  277. which is what Paul's big idea is here,

  278. orderly worship,

  279. even in a large meeting

  280. like this,

  281. orderly worship

  282. still facilitates

  283. the participation

  284. and mutual edification

  285. that Paul really wants.

  286. in other words,

  287. even if things don't look identical

  288. on the surface,

  289. the principles are still

  290. being embodied.

  291. Orderly worship

  292. allows everyone

  293. to take part

  294. in what's happening.

  295. This is one of the reasons

  296. why we have an order of service.

  297. So that when we come together,

  298. we're not just spectators

  299. of what's happening

  300. up on stage,

  301. but so that we can enter

  302. into

  303. the worship service itself

  304. with our spirits

  305. and with our minds,

  306. as Paul says back

  307. in verses 14 through 15.

  308. And we put a lot of thought

  309. into making the order of service.

  310. It's not just a random string

  311. of songs and reading and prayer,

  312. but something that actually

  313. takes us,

  314. if you notice,

  315. week in and week out

  316. on a journey

  317. through the gospel narrative.

  318. This is what we're hoping to do

  319. with our order of service.

  320. We begin,

  321. did you notice,

  322. it's right there in your bulletin,

  323. with a time of adoration.

  324. Right?

  325. Praising God for who he is.

  326. And then we move, what,

  327. to a time of confession.

  328. Acknowledging our sin

  329. and our need of a savior.

  330. And then we move to the cross.

  331. And we sing and we speak

  332. of what Jesus has done

  333. for all who believe.

  334. Paying the penalty for our sin.

  335. Rising again to give us new life.

  336. And then after we've

  337. adored God for who he is

  338. and we've celebrated

  339. what Christ has done for us

  340. to forgive our sins,

  341. having celebrated God's grace

  342. in that way,

  343. we move to a time of sharing

  344. what God's been doing

  345. in our lives.

  346. And particularly,

  347. coming to God

  348. as our heavenly father

  349. who knows our needs

  350. even before we ask them.

  351. and pouring out our hearts

  352. to him

  353. with our needs

  354. and our petitions

  355. and our prayers.

  356. So you see,

  357. we're moving

  358. through the narrative

  359. of the gospel.

  360. God,

  361. we adore him.

  362. We're sinners

  363. and we need to confess

  364. that before him.

  365. Christ has done something

  366. once and for all for us

  367. and that opens up

  368. a new kind of relationship

  369. and response to God.

  370. God,

  371. we're shaping our services

  372. around the message,

  373. the story of the good news.

  374. Why do we do that?

  375. Friends,

  376. so that week in

  377. and week out

  378. in a hundred different ways,

  379. we can participate together

  380. in the celebration

  381. of the gospel

  382. of Jesus Christ.

  383. Which 1 Peter tells us

  384. even angels

  385. long to look at

  386. and look into

  387. with wonder.

  388. the gospel is something

  389. that will never grow old

  390. for all eternity.

  391. So every Sunday,

  392. we want to come before it

  393. and in the hundreds

  394. of different ways

  395. in which we can celebrate it,

  396. we want to be

  397. diving into it together.

  398. So I hope

  399. that our orderly service

  400. and our order of service

  401. empowers your meaningful

  402. participation.

  403. You know,

  404. this is another reason

  405. why

  406. we also

  407. don't just have

  408. an order of service,

  409. but

  410. we print out

  411. the sermon text

  412. ahead of time

  413. on the sermon cards

  414. so that we can be

  415. engaging with the text

  416. together

  417. before we come

  418. on Sundays

  419. and so that we can be

  420. praying for the message.

  421. Just this week,

  422. I actually heard

  423. of a student

  424. in our youth group

  425. who uses the sermon text

  426. each week

  427. as part of his quiet time.

  428. I think that's

  429. a great example

  430. for all of us.

  431. I guarantee you

  432. that you will get

  433. more out of Sunday mornings,

  434. you will feel more engaged

  435. if you read

  436. and you meditate

  437. on the text

  438. ahead of time

  439. and pray for the message

  440. on Sunday.

  441. Pick up a good study Bible

  442. like the ESV study Bible

  443. or there's others out there,

  444. you don't have to get that one.

  445. But that will be

  446. a good help to you

  447. as you study the passage

  448. during the week

  449. and get your bearings in it

  450. and start to meditate on it

  451. to help you delve into it.

  452. But you know,

  453. it's not just leading up

  454. to the service

  455. but in the time

  456. following the service.

  457. You know,

  458. what we do

  459. after the benediction

  460. here

  461. is still very much

  462. part of our

  463. gathered worship.

  464. We engage

  465. with one another

  466. over the text.

  467. I know some of the

  468. small groups

  469. are actually using

  470. the sermon text

  471. as part of their

  472. weekly small group discussion

  473. to be carrying

  474. what we're doing here

  475. into their one anothering

  476. throughout the week.

  477. That gives them a way

  478. to connect

  479. what's happening

  480. on Sundays

  481. to their mutual teaching

  482. and edifying

  483. of one another

  484. in their small group.

  485. So there are lots of ways

  486. in which

  487. our services

  488. through being orderly

  489. are actually encouraging

  490. this kind of mutual

  491. full-on participation

  492. that we're all engaged

  493. in what's happening here.

  494. Okay, let's keep moving.

  495. I hope you see

  496. that the first big reason

  497. why orderly worship

  498. is so important

  499. is because

  500. chaos can't produce

  501. and maintain

  502. a culture

  503. of mutual participation

  504. and mutual building up.

  505. But Paul says

  506. orderly worship can.

  507. Okay.

  508. Now,

  509. let me say a few words

  510. about verses 34 and 35.

  511. Ah,

  512. when was he going to

  513. start talking about that?

  514. Okay,

  515. here we go.

  516. These verses

  517. in the text of our passage

  518. seem to come out of nowhere,

  519. right?

  520. So much so

  521. that some commentators

  522. have even speculated

  523. whether they were added

  524. to the manuscript

  525. at some later date.

  526. Some people have wondered

  527. maybe there was a scribe

  528. who just sort of wrote

  529. that in the margins

  530. and eventually

  531. just kind of got stuck in.

  532. Okay.

  533. The reality is

  534. that these verses

  535. are in every single manuscript

  536. of 1 Corinthians

  537. that we have.

  538. So it seems that Paul

  539. actually did write them.

  540. So,

  541. what do they mean?

  542. You know,

  543. it's very important

  544. when we run across

  545. a passage like this,

  546. ones that at first

  547. are very arresting

  548. and seem very unclear

  549. and on the surface

  550. maybe seem a little offensive

  551. or on the surface

  552. seem a lot offensive.

  553. Okay.

  554. It's important

  555. to interpret

  556. the less clear parts

  557. of Scripture

  558. in light of the more

  559. clear parts of Scripture.

  560. and when we do that

  561. we realize pretty quickly

  562. that there's one thing

  563. that this text

  564. cannot be saying.

  565. This text cannot be saying

  566. that women

  567. should never ever

  568. participate verbally

  569. in public worship.

  570. How do we know that?

  571. Well, look,

  572. if you go back

  573. three chapters

  574. to 1 Corinthians 11

  575. we see there

  576. very clearly

  577. that women

  578. are praying

  579. and prophesying

  580. in the church

  581. and Paul has

  582. zero problem with it.

  583. He just wants

  584. to make sure

  585. that they respect

  586. their husbands

  587. as they do so.

  588. That's the deal

  589. with head coverings.

  590. So unless Paul

  591. is hopelessly

  592. contradicting himself

  593. he can't mean

  594. that women

  595. should never ever

  596. pray or speak

  597. in church.

  598. So whatever Paul

  599. means by keep silent

  600. that can't be it.

  601. Okay.

  602. So what does Paul

  603. mean then?

  604. Well here commentators

  605. go in all sorts

  606. of different directions

  607. and if you're interested

  608. in the nitty gritty details

  609. you can come talk

  610. to me afterwards

  611. and we can have

  612. a long conversation

  613. about all the crazy ways

  614. in which scholars

  615. try to put these pieces

  616. together.

  617. But here's another principle.

  618. If we should always

  619. interpret the less clear

  620. parts of scripture

  621. by the more clear parts

  622. we should also

  623. always look at texts

  624. in their context.

  625. And what's the context

  626. of these verses?

  627. Verses 34 and 35.

  628. Not just

  629. speaking in church

  630. in general.

  631. The immediate context

  632. in verses 29 through 33

  633. is what?

  634. The giving

  635. and the weighing

  636. of prophecy.

  637. Now

  638. as we just pointed out

  639. from 1 Corinthians 11

  640. and as we actually see

  641. all across

  642. the New Testament

  643. women

  644. were

  645. most certainly

  646. giving words of prophecy

  647. and sharing all sorts

  648. of encouraging words

  649. in the church.

  650. So

  651. the best bet

  652. seems to be

  653. that verses 34

  654. to 35

  655. have something

  656. to do

  657. with the weighing

  658. of prophecy.

  659. That is

  660. the evaluation

  661. of prophecy.

  662. And at this point

  663. it seems

  664. there are broadly

  665. two directions,

  666. two interpretations

  667. that could make sense.

  668. And here's where

  669. some commentators

  670. go with this.

  671. One reading

  672. would seem

  673. to understand

  674. these verses

  675. to be saying

  676. that married women

  677. shouldn't publicly

  678. evaluate and question

  679. the prophecies

  680. of their husbands.

  681. Instead

  682. they should talk

  683. to their husbands

  684. at home

  685. lest

  686. they run the risk

  687. of dishonoring

  688. their husbands

  689. and undermining

  690. the special relationship

  691. that exists

  692. in a marriage

  693. between a husband

  694. and wife

  695. that's meant

  696. to mirror

  697. Christ in the church.

  698. And so

  699. in this reading

  700. Paul isn't saying

  701. that women

  702. shouldn't speak

  703. at all

  704. but again

  705. in the context

  706. of weighing prophecies

  707. they shouldn't speak

  708. in evaluation

  709. of their husbands.

  710. Okay

  711. that's the first way

  712. of reading the passage

  713. and that would understand

  714. verses 34

  715. through 35

  716. as relating

  717. to a particular

  718. relationship

  719. right?

  720. To the relationship

  721. of marriage.

  722. The second way

  723. we could understand

  724. these verses

  725. is to see them

  726. referring

  727. not necessarily

  728. to a particular

  729. relationship

  730. marriage

  731. but relating

  732. to a particular

  733. office

  734. in the church.

  735. That is

  736. the office

  737. or the role

  738. that was responsible

  739. for giving

  740. the final

  741. public evaluation

  742. of anything

  743. that was formally

  744. taught

  745. in the church assembly.

  746. and held up

  747. as true doctrine.

  748. Think of it this way

  749. when the first century

  750. New Testament church

  751. gathered

  752. as Paul says

  753. each one had a hymn

  754. each one had a lesson

  755. each one had a revelation

  756. a word of prophecy

  757. an interpreted tongue

  758. who was entrusted

  759. with the final

  760. buck stops here

  761. Jesus is going

  762. to judge us for it

  763. responsibility

  764. to weigh

  765. and evaluate

  766. and make sure

  767. that whatever

  768. was being held up

  769. as true doctrine

  770. in the church

  771. aligned

  772. with

  773. the apostles

  774. teaching

  775. and the deposit

  776. of the faith

  777. once for all

  778. delivered to the saints

  779. who was going

  780. to make sure

  781. that the teaching

  782. was going to be upheld

  783. in that life giving way

  784. and we see that

  785. in the New Testament

  786. that responsibility

  787. was entrusted

  788. to the office

  789. of the elders.

  790. Yes, every believer

  791. is meant to test

  792. and weigh

  793. what's being taught

  794. in good

  795. Berean-like

  796. open your Bibles

  797. and study the scriptures

  798. fashion.

  799. If you have no idea

  800. who the Bereans are

  801. I'm sorry for that

  802. esoteric reference

  803. come talk to me afterwards.

  804. They were Christians

  805. in the city of Berea

  806. who really sort of

  807. dug into the Bible

  808. and understood

  809. the apostles' teaching.

  810. Okay.

  811. Every believer

  812. is meant to be doing that

  813. but

  814. the responsibility

  815. of overseeing

  816. and preserving

  817. the faithful teaching

  818. in the congregation

  819. falls especially

  820. to the office

  821. of the elders.

  822. Who are the elders?

  823. We see from the New Testament

  824. that the elders

  825. are those men

  826. whom the congregation

  827. formally recognizes

  828. as being able

  829. to faithfully teach

  830. and defend

  831. the biblical

  832. apostolic teaching

  833. and whose character

  834. consistently conforms

  835. to the image of Christ.

  836. Look at 1 Timothy chapter 3

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  837. if you want to see

  838. a description of elders.

  839. So what does this mean?

  840. Paul in verses 34

  841. through 35

  842. of our text

  843. isn't saying

  844. that women

  845. shouldn't speak at all.

  846. But in the context

  847. of weighing prophecies

  848. he's saying

  849. that they shouldn't speak

  850. in the place

  851. of an elder.

  852. And I think

  853. if we were to push Paul

  854. on this

  855. he would also say

  856. non-elder males

  857. shouldn't be

  858. speaking in the place

  859. of an elder either.

  860. Because this isn't

  861. an office that just

  862. goes to every male

  863. indiscriminately

  864. but those whom

  865. the congregation

  866. all of us

  867. have seen

  868. and tested

  869. and approved

  870. to occupy

  871. that office

  872. for us.

  873. Okay.

  874. There are two readings.

  875. Maybe none of them

  876. seem satisfying to you

  877. but there they are.

  878. Which one is it?

  879. Well again

  880. I think both

  881. are somewhat plausible.

  882. And the reality is

  883. we don't want to be

  884. overly dogmatic

  885. or close fisted

  886. about the meaning

  887. of text

  888. that pretty much

  889. everyone recognizes

  890. are really tricky

  891. to discern

  892. the exact meaning of.

  893. Every single

  894. honest commentator

  895. who looks at these

  896. verses will say

  897. man it's hard to know

  898. exactly what Paul

  899. has in mind here.

  900. Personally

  901. I find the second

  902. reading to make

  903. the most sense

  904. in light of the rest

  905. of the New Testament.

  906. But

  907. we don't want to

  908. lose the forest

  909. for the trees here

  910. friends.

  911. This passage

  912. is helping us

  913. see the importance

  914. of orderly worship.

  915. And part of

  916. orderly worship

  917. means at times

  918. deferring to others.

  919. Look at verse 28.

  920. Those who speak

  921. in tongues

  922. should defer

  923. when there isn't

  924. an interpreter around.

  925. They too

  926. should keep silent.

  927. In verse 30

  928. those who prophesy

  929. should defer

  930. when another prophet

  931. stands up to speak.

  932. And all of that

  933. is for our good.

  934. And so friends

  935. we can trust too

  936. that whatever

  937. Paul has in mind here

  938. whether it's

  939. regarding the relationship

  940. between husband and wives

  941. or whether it's

  942. regarding the office

  943. of the elder

  944. that God

  945. intends this too

  946. for our good

  947. and for our freedom

  948. and for the

  949. upbuilding of the church.

  950. Okay

  951. we've seen then

  952. that orderly worship

  953. lets everyone

  954. play their part.

  955. If you want to come

  956. talk to me about

  957. this passage

  958. after the service

  959. please come

  960. I'd love to talk

  961. more about it.

  962. But there are more

  963. reasons that Paul

  964. gives for the

  965. importance of

  966. orderly worship.

  967. And the next big

  968. reason is this.

  969. He tells us to do

  970. all things decently

  971. and in order

  972. because orderly worship

  973. is the Lord's command.

  974. Look at verse 36.

  975. Paul here is sort of

  976. picking up the line

  977. of thinking

  978. from verses 32

  979. and 33.

  980. And in verse 36

  981. he seems to be

  982. responding to a

  983. potential question

  984. or a potential

  985. sort of pushback

  986. from the Corinthians.

  987. They were probably

  988. thinking something like

  989. look Paul

  990. won't this order

  991. of yours

  992. quench the spirit?

  993. I mean

  994. what if the spirit

  995. gives me a word

  996. that just has

  997. to be said?

  998. Do you really

  999. want me to wait?

  1000. You surely

  1001. don't think

  1002. I should just

  1003. refuse

  1004. the leading

  1005. of the spirit?

  1006. Won't that stifle

  1007. God's work

  1008. in our midst?

  1009. Not to mention

  1010. squander the spirit's

  1011. gifts?

  1012. And Paul sort of

  1013. replies to that

  1014. critique or criticism

  1015. with a little bit

  1016. of sarcasm

  1017. doesn't he?

  1018. Oh really?

  1019. Does the word

  1020. of God

  1021. come from you?

  1022. Are you the only

  1023. ones with the word

  1024. of God?

1025. Do you have a corner

  1026. on how God's word

  1027. ought to work?

  1028. Are you the authorities

  1029. on this matter?

  1030. No

  1031. Paul says

  1032. Jesus is

  1033. he's the Lord

  1034. and his word

  1035. is what we ought

  1036. to do

  1037. and his word

  1038. is that we ought

  1039. to do things

  1040. in an orderly way

  1041. and defer to one

  1042. another

  1043. and exercise

  1044. self-control

  1045. in our meetings

  1046. at the end

  1047. of verse 37

  1048. Paul says

  1049. the things

  1050. I'm writing

  1051. to you

  1052. are a command

  1053. of the Lord

  1054. and in Paul's

  1055. writings

  1056. the Lord

  1057. almost always

  1058. means

  1059. the Lord

  1060. Jesus

  1061. Jesus

  1062. himself

  1063. Paul is saying

  1064. wants worship

  1065. to be orderly

  1066. and friends

  1067. if that's true

  1068. if this is something

  1069. that Jesus

  1070. wants for us

  1071. isn't that enough?

  1072. If the one

  1073. who loved us

  1074. and gave himself

  1075. for us

  1076. and who rose

  1077. again conquering

  1078. death

  1079. and who sits

  1080. at the Father's

  1081. right hand

  1082. interceding for us

  1083. and one day

  1084. will come again

  1085. in glory

  1086. if that Jesus

  1087. says

  1088. when you

  1089. gather for

  1090. worship

  1091. do things

  1092. in an orderly

  1093. way

  1094. that should

  1095. be enough

  1096. if I happen

  1097. to get lost

  1098. in the woods

  1099. and suddenly

  1100. out of nowhere

  1101. Bear Grylls

  1102. comes down

  1103. on a line

  1104. and lands

  1105. next to me

  1106. and says

  1107. I'm not going

  1108. to try a British

  1109. accent

  1110. you can fill

  1111. one in

  1112. hey

  1113. if we do

  1114. things this

  1115. way

  1116. we'll find

  1117. our way

  1118. again

  1119. and we'll

  1120. make it

  1121. home

  1122. so trust

  1123. me

  1124. and let's

  1125. do it

  1126. this way

  1127. look

  1128. what am

  1129. I going

  1130. to do

  1131. I'm probably

  1132. not going

  1133. to say

  1134. well look

  1135. Bear

  1136. you're Bear

  1137. Grylls

  1138. and all

  1139. but I mean

  1140. really

  1141. do you think

  1142. that's what

  1143. we should

  1144. do

  1145. why

  1146. give me

  1147. ten good

  1148. reasons

  1149. why

  1150. I should

  1151. follow

  1152. your

  1153. advice

  1154. no

  1155. I am

  1156. immediately

  1157. going to

  1158. trust him

  1159. and do

  1160. what he

  1161. says

  1162. he's Bear

  1163. Grylls

  1164. do you know

  1165. who Bear

  1166. Grylls

  1167. is

  1168. if you

  1169. don't

  1170. go google

  1171. him

  1172. afterwards

  1173. he's a

  1174. stud

  1175. he knows

  1176. what he's

  1177. talking

  1178. about

  1179. friends

  1180. how much

  1181. more

  1182. ought we

  1183. to trust

  1184. the words

  1185. of the

  1186. risen

  1187. Lord

  1188. Jesus

  1189. when we

  1190. kind of

  1191. lose

  1192. our way

  1193. when it

  1194. comes to

  1195. what we

  1196. ought to

  1197. do

  1198. when we

  1199. gather

  1200. together

  1201. for

  1202. worship

  1203. it's

  1204. his

  1205. church

  1206. it's

  1207. his

  1208. world

  1209. he

  1210. rules

  1211. and reigns

  1212. it

  1213. in his

  1214. good

  1215. loving

  1216. merciful

  1217. patient

  1218. just

  1219. way

  1220. we

  1221. should

  1222. listen

  1223. to

  1224. what

  1225. he

  1226. says

  1227. and of

  1228. course

  1229. the million

  1230. dollar

  1231. question

  1232. is

  1233. well where

  1234. exactly

  1235. do we

  1236. find the

  1237. words

  1238. of

  1239. Jesus

  1240. today

  1241. in

  1242. verses

  1243. 37

  1244. through

  1245. 38

  1246. actually

  1247. point

  1248. us

  1249. to

  1250. where

  1251. we

  1252. ought

  1253. to

  1254. look

  1255. Paul

  1256. says

  1257. if

  1258. anyone

  1259. thinks

  1260. he

  1261. is

  1262. a

  1263. prophet

  1264. or

  1265. spiritual

  1266. he

  1267. should

  1268. acknowledge

  1269. that

  1270. the

  1271. things

  1272. I

  1273. am

  1274. writing

  1275. to

  1276. you

  1277. are

  1278. a

  1279. command

  1280. of

  1281. Lord

  1282. do

  1283. you

  1284. see

  1285. what

  1286. the

  1287. text

  1288. is

  1289. implying

  1290. here

  1291. the

  1292. commands

  1293. of

  1294. the

  1295. Lord

  1296. Jesus

  1297. the

  1298. words

  1299. of

  1300. our

  1301. risen

  1302. savior

  1303. and

  1304. the

  1305. head

  1306. of

  1307. the

  1308. church

  1309. how

  1310. do

  1311. they

  1312. come

  1313. to

  1314. us

  1315. today

  1316. where

  1317. do

  1318. we

  1319. find

  1320. them

  1321. through

  1322. the

  1323. teaching

  1324. and

  1325. the

  1326. writing

  1327. of

  1328. Jesus

  1329. appointed

  1330. representatives

  1331. the

  1332. ones

  1333. he

  1334. entrusted

  1335. to

  1336. speak

  1337. and

  1338. teach

  1339. his

  1340. words

  1341. to

  1342. the

  1343. church

  1344. that

  1345. is

  1346. the

  1347. apostles

  1348. then

  1349. Paul

  1350. says

  1351. something

  1352. really

  1353. bold

  1354. if

  1355. anyone

  1356. doesn't

  1357. recognize

  1358. this

  1359. he

  1360. is

  1361. not

  1362. recognized

  1363. that

  1364. is

  1365. not

  1366. recognized

  1367. by

  1368. God

  1369. now

  1370. that

  1371. would

  1372. be

  1373. the

  1374. most

  1375. insanely

  1376. audacious

  1377. thing

  1378. in the

  1379. world

  1380. to

  1381. say

  1382. if

  1383. Jesus

  1384. himself

  1385. hadn't

  1386. said

  1387. the

  1388. exact

  1389. same

  1390. thing

  1391. during

  1392. Jesus

  1393. earthly

  1394. ministry

  1395. when

  1396. he

  1397. sent

  1398. out

  1399. his

  1400. apostles

  1401. to

  1402. teach

  1403. you

  1404. see

  1405. this

  1406. in

  1407. Luke

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  1408. chapter

  1409. 10

  1410. for

  1411. instance

  1412. Jesus

  1413. told

  1414. them

  1415. this

  1416. to

  1417. his

  1418. apostles

  1419. to

  1420. those

  1421. chosen

  1422. twelve

  1423. that

  1424. he

  1425. appointed

  1426. for

  1427. this

  1428. task

  1429. whoever

  1430. hears

  1431. you

  1432. hears

  1433. me

  1434. and

  1435. the

  1436. one

  1437. who

  1438. rejects

  1439. you

  1440. rejects

  1441. me

  1442. and

  1443. the

  1444. one

  1445. who

  1446. rejects

  1447. me

  1448. rejects

  1449. him

  1450. who

  1451. sent

  1452. me

  1453. so

  1454. you

  1455. see

  1456. Jesus

  1457. himself

  1458. the

  1459. historical

  1460. Jesus

  1461. himself

  1462. is

  1463. drawing

  1464. a

  1465. direct

  1466. link

  1467. between

  1468. God

  1469. the

  1470. father

  1471. and

  1472. himself

  1473. and

  1474. his

  1475. apostles

  1476. do

  1477. you

  1478. want to

  1479. know

  1480. what

  1481. God

  1482. has

  1483. to

  1484. say

  1485. listen

  1486. to

  1487. his

  1488. son

  1489. do

  1490. you

  1491. want

  1492. to

  1493. know

  1494. what

  1495. the

  1496. son

  1497. has

  1498. to

  1499. say

  1500. listen

  1501. to

  1502. the

  1503. apostles

  1504. that

  1505. he

  1506. appointed

  1507. to

  1508. teach

  1509. and

  1510. preach

  1511. in

  1512. his

  1513. name

  1514. and

  1515. where

  1516. do

  1517. we

  1518. find

  1519. the

  1520. teaching

  1521. of

  1522. Jesus

  1523. appointed

  1524. apostles

  1525. today

  1526. in

  1527. the

  1528. new

  1529. testament

  1530. friends

  1531. that's

  1532. why

  1533. the

  1534. bible

  1535. is

  1536. our

  1537. well

  1538. spring

  1539. that's

  1540. why

  1541. Sunday

  1542. after

  1543. Sunday

  1544. we

  1545. open

  1546. it

  1547. up

  1548. and

  1549. we

  1550. read

  1551. it

  1552. and

  1553. we

  1554. try

  1555. to

  1556. teach

  1557. the

  1558. message

  1559. of

  1560. the

  1561. scriptures

  1562. here

  1563. we

  1564. have

  1565. the

  1566. words

  1567. Jesus

  1568. himself

  1569. gave

  1570. to

  1571. his

  1572. church

  1573. through

  1574. his

  1575. apostles

  1576. in

  1577. the

  1578. new

  1579. testament

  1580. and

  1581. through

  1582. his

  1583. prophets

  1584. in

  1585. the

  1586. old

  1587. testament

  1588. too

  1589. and

  1590. this

  1591. apostolic

  1592. word

  1593. that

  1594. Jesus

  1595. entrusted

  1596. is

  1597. preserved

  1598. in

  1599. scripture

  1600. for

  1601. the

  1602. church

  1603. and

  1604. isn't

  1605. that

  1606. good

  1607. news

  1608. that

  1609. instead

  1610. of

  1611. wondering

  1612. where

  1613. we

  1614. can

  1615. hear

  1616. the

  1617. voice

  1618. of

  1619. our

  1620. Lord

  1621. he

  1622. says

  1623. here

  1624. it

  1625. is

  1626. it

  1627. is

  1628. for

  1629. you

  1630. so

  1631. you

  1632. can

  1633. always

  1634. have

  1635. his

  1636. words

  1637. so

  1638. we

  1639. can

  1640. always

  1641. have

  1642. his

  1643. voice

  1644. leading

  1645. us

  1646. and

  1647. guiding

  1648. us

  1649. and

  1650. correcting

  1651. us

  1652. and

  1653. comforting

  1654. us

  1655. we

  1656. often

  1657. think

  1658. that

  1659. having

  1660. an

  1661. authoritative

  1662. bible

  1663. is

  1664. this

  1665. huge

  1666. problem

  1667. but

  1668. in fact

  1669. it's

  1670. this

  1671. great

  1672. gift

  1673. that

  1674. we

  1675. don't

  1676. have

  1677. to

  1678. make

  1679. things

  1680. up

  1681. on

  1682. our

  1683. own

  1684. that

  1685. we

  1686. don't

  1687. have

  1688. to

  1689. create

  1690. God

  1691. in

  1692. our

  1693. own

  1694. image

  1695. that

  1696. we

  1697. don't

  1698. have

  1699. to

  1700. guess

  1701. what

  1702. Jesus

  1703. says

  1704. but

  1705. he

  1706. 38

  1707. is

  1708. that

  1709. truly

  1710. spiritual

  1711. worship

  1712. places

  1713. the

  1714. apostolic

  1715. words

  1716. of

  1717. Jesus

  1718. which

  1719. we

  1720. have

  1721. preserved

  1722. for

  1723. us

  1724. in

  1725. scripture

  1726. at

  1727. the

  1728. center

  1729. of

  1730. everything

  1731. in

  1732. other

  1733. words

  1734. they're

  1735. the

  1736. order

  1737. underneath

  1738. the

  1739. order

  1740. that's

  1741. why

  1742. our

  1743. orderly

  1744. worship

  1745. seeks

  1746. to be

  1747. just

  1748. saturated

  1749. with

  1750. the

  1751. words

  1752. of

  1753. scripture

  1754. our

  1755. songs

  1756. and

  1757. prayers

  1758. and

  1759. testimonies

  1760. and

  1761. sermons

  1762. we

  1763. want

  1764. them

  1765. to

  1766. be

  1767. infused

  1768. with

  1769. the

  1770. bible

  1771. why

  1772. because

  1773. we

  1774. don't

  1775. have

  1776. anything

  1777. else

  1778. better

  1779. to

  1780. say

  1781. yeah

  1782. we

  1783. don't

  1784. have

  1785. anything

  1786. else

  1787. better

  1788. to

  1789. say

  1790. than

  1791. what

  1792. God

  1793. is

  1794. saying

  1795. in

  1796. his

  1797. word

  1798. Beth

  1799. and I

  1800. recently

  1801. started

  1802. making

  1803. cold brew

  1804. coffee

  1805. at

  1806. home

  1807. do you

  1808. know

  1809. what

  1810. cold brew

  1811. coffee

  1812. is

  1813. the

  1814. process

  1815. is

  1816. really

  1817. easy

  1818. actually

  1819. you

  1820. grind

  1821. up

  1822. some

  1823. coffee

  1824. you

  1825. put

  1826. it

  1827. in

  1828. a

  1829. container

  1830. of

  1831. water

  1832. and

  1833. then

  1834. you

  1835. just

  1836. put

  1837. it

  1838. in

  1839. your

  1840. fridge

  1841. for

  1842. 12

  1843. hours

  1844. rich

  1845. super

  1846. caffeinated

  1847. beverage

  1848. to

  1849. jump

  1850. start

  1851. your

  1852. day

  1853. or

  1854. you

  1855. can

  1856. go

  1857. to

  1858. Starbucks

  1859. and

  1860. pay

  1861. like

  1862. six

  1863. bucks

  1864. for

  1865. one

  1866. we'll

  1867. make

  1868. ours

  1869. at

  1870. home

  1871. okay

  1872. friends

  1873. that's

  1874. sort

  1875. of

  1876. what

  1877. we

  1878. want

  1879. to

  1880. happen

  1881. with

  1882. public

  1883. worship

  1884. we

  1885. want

  1886. the

  1887. scriptures

  1888. to

  1889. so

  1890. saturate

  1891. everything

  1892. we

  1893. do

  1894. that

  1895. you

  1896. can't

  1897. help

  1898. but

  1899. get

  1900. a

  1901. good

  1902. strong

  1903. rich

  1904. dose

  1905. of

  1906. Jesus

  1907. life

  1908. giving

  1909. words

  1910. on

  1911. Sunday

  1912. which

  1913. is

  1914. why

  1915. if

  1916. you

  1917. have

  1918. a

  1919. friend

  1920. who

  1921. is

  1922. seeking

  1923. God

  1924. or

  1925. if

  1926. you

  1927. yourself

  1928. are

  1929. feeling

  1930. far

  1931. from

  1932. God

  1933. bring

  1934. them

  1935. to

  1936. a

  1937. gathering

  1938. where

  1939. the

  1940. scriptures

  1941. are

  1942. being

  1943. explained

  1944. and

  1945. read

  1946. and

  1947. talked

  1948. about

  1949. and

  1950. prayed

  1951. and

  1952. preached

  1953. because

  1954. God

  1955. is

  1956. speaking

  1957. through

  1958. his

  1959. word

  1960. and

  1961. it

  1962. also

  1963. means

  1964. that

  1965. if

  1966. we

  1967. want

  1968. to

  1969. grow

  1970. in

  1971. our

  1972. maturity

  1973. of

  1974. using

  1975. our

  1976. spiritual

  1977. gifts

  1978. in

  1979. worship

  1980. the

  1981. best

  1982. thing

  1983. that

  1984. we

  1985. can

  1986. do

  1987. is

  1988. pray

  1989. earnestly

  1990. which

  1991. Paul

  1992. says

  1993. a

  1994. number

  1995. of

  1996. times

  1997. in

  1998. this

  1999. passage

  2000. and

  2001. immerse

  2002. ourselves

  2003. in

  2004. scripture

  2005. so

  2006. let me

  2007. ask

  2008. friends

  2009. do

  2010. you

  2011. have

  2012. a

  2013. way

  2014. of

  2015. doing

  2016. that

  2017. what

  2018. steps

  2019. are

  2020. you

  2021. taking

  2022. to

  2023. soak

  2024. in

  2025. the

  2026. scriptures

  2027. and

  2028. to

  2029. fill

  2030. your

  2031. mind

  2032. with

  2033. the

  2034. mind

  2035. of

  2036. Christ

  2037. showing

  2038. up

  2039. to

  2040. public

  2041. worship

  2042. is

  2043. the

  2044. first

  2045. best

  2046. step

  2047. but

  2048. are

  2049. you

  2050. taking

  2051. advantage

  2052. of

  2053. other

  2054. means

  2055. maybe

  2056. you

  2057. have

  2058. tried

  2059. reading

  2060. through

  2061. the

  2062. Bible

  2063. in

  2064. a

  2065. year

  2066. and

  2067. have

  2068. totally

  2069. failed

  2070. okay

  2071. I have

  2072. done

  2073. that

  2074. like

  2075. a

  2076. thousand

  2077. times

  2078. somewhere

  2079. around

  2080. you

  2081. know

  2082. Deuteronomy

  2083. if you are

  2084. really having

  2085. a good

  2086. year

  2087. you

  2088. peter

  2089. out

  2090. right

  2091. let me

  2092. offer

  2093. another

  2094. strategy

  2095. if that

  2096. one

  2097. hasn't

  2098. worked

  2099. for

  2100. you

  2101. pick

  2102. one

  2103. book

  2104. of

  2105. the

  2106. Bible

  2107. like

  2108. the

  2109. book

  2110. of

  2111. Ephesians

  2112. it's

  2113. short

  2114. or

  2115. the

  2116. Gospel

  2117. of

  2118. Mark

  2119. it's

  2120. also

  2121. kind

  2122. of

  2123. short

  2124. pick

  2125. one

  2126. book

  2127. and

  2128. read

  2129. it

  2130. over

  2131. and

  2132. over

  2133. and

  2134. over

  2135. again

  2136. and

  2137. pray

  2138. through

  2139. it

  2140. and

  2141. journal

  2142. about

  2143. it

  2144. and

  2145. outline

  2146. it

  2147. and

  2148. memorize

  2149. key

  2150. verses

  2151. and

  2152. talk

  2153. to

  2154. a

  2155. friend

  2156. about

  2157. what

  2158. you're

  2159. learning

  2160. from

  2161. that

  2162. one

  2163. book

  2164. just

  2165. soak

  2166. in

  2167. that

  2168. one

  2169. book

  2170. until

  2171. you

  2172. feel

  2173. like

  2174. you

  2175. know

  2176. it

  2177. really

  2178. well

  2179. like

  2180. the

  2181. living

  2182. room

  2183. of

  2184. your

  2185. house

  2186. until

  2187. it

  2188. feels

  2189. like

  2190. it's

  2191. inside

  2192. of

  2193. you

  2194. maybe

  2195. that'll

  2196. take

  2197. a few

  2198. months

  2199. maybe

  2200. it'll

  2201. take

  2202. six

  2203. months

  2204. for

  2205. a

  2206. longer

  2207. book

  2208. it might

  2209. take

  2210. a whole

  2211. year

  2212. but

  2213. just

  2214. inhabit

  2215. that

  2216. book

  2217. and

  2218. only

  2219. then

  2220. move

  2221. on

  2222. to

  2223. another

  2224. book

  2225. and

  2226. do

  2227. the

  2228. same

  2229. thing

  2230. in

  2231. other

  2232. words

  2233. instead

  2234. of

  2235. going

  2236. a

  2237. mile

  2238. wide

  2239. and

  2240. an

  2241. inch

  2242. deep

  2243. go

  2244. an

  2245. inch

  2246. deep

  2247. and

  2248. a

  2249. mile

  2250. wide

  2251. and

  2252. I

  2253. guarantee

  2254. you

  2255. you

  2256. will

  2257. not

  2258. be

  2259. so

  2260. orderly

  2261. worship

  2262. then

  2263. is

  2264. Jesus'

  2265. command

  2266. and

  2267. we

  2268. want

  2269. his

  2270. words

  2271. to

  2272. be

  2273. at

  2274. the

  2275. center

  2276. of

  2277. all

  2278. that

  2279. we

  2280. do

  2281. but

  2282. there's

  2283. one

  2284. last

  2285. point

  2286. that

  2287. our

  2288. text

  2289. holds

  2290. up

  2291. for

  2292. us

  2293. as

  2294. we

  2295. consider

  2296. orderly

  2297. worship

  2298. and

  2299. it's

  2300. this

  2301. this

  2302. is

  2303. a

  2304. short

  2305. point

  2306. do

  2307. all

  2308. things

  2309. decently

  2310. and

  2311. in

  2312. order

  2313. because

  2314. orderly

  2315. worship

  2316. displays

  2317. God's

  2318. character

  2319. to

  2320. the

  2321. world

  2322. look

  2323. back

  2324. at

  2325. verse

  2326. 33

  2327. do

  2328. all

  2329. this

  2330. Paul

  2331. says

  2332. for

  2333. God

  2334. is

  2335. not

  2336. a

  2337. God

  2338. of

  2339. confusion

  2340. but

  2341. of

  2342. peace

  2343. in

  2344. our

  2345. worship

  2346. in

  2347. our

  2348. life

  2349. together

  2350. whether

  2351. we

  2352. like

  2353. it

  2354. or

  2355. not

  2356. we

  2357. are

  2358. saying

  2359. something

  2360. about

  2361. the

  2362. character

  2363. of

  2364. God

  2365. so

  2366. what

  2367. do

  2368. people

  2369. see

  2370. when

  2371. they

  2372. join

  2373. us

  2374. do

  2375. they

  2376. see

  2377. chaos

  2378. do

  2379. they

  2380. see

  2381. people

  2382. just

  2383. trying

  2384. to

  2385. one

  2386. up

  2387. each

  2388. other

  2389. and

  2390. show

  2391. off

  2392. or

  2393. do

  2394. they

  2395. see

  2396. something

  2397. different

  2398. not

  2399. just

  2400. in

  2401. what

  2402. said

  2403. but

  2404. how

  2405. our

  2406. life

  2407. together

  2408. is

  2409. functioning

  2410. do

  2411. they

  2412. see

  2413. the

  2414. God

  2415. of

  2416. peace

  2417. listen

  2418. to how

  2419. Paul

  2420. describes

  2421. it

  2422. in

  2423. his

  2424. letter

  2425. to

  2426. the

  2427. Ephesians

  2428. he

  2429. says

  2430. remember

  2431. that

  2432. you

  2433. were

  2434. at

  2435. that

  2436. time

  2437. separated

  2438. from

  2439. Christ

  2440. alienated

  2441. from

  2442. the

  2443. commonwealth

  2444. of

  2445. Israel

  2446. strangers

  2447. to

  2448. the

  2449. covenants

  2450. of

  2451. promise

  2452. having

  2453. no

  2454. hope

  2455. and

  2456. without

  2457. God

  2458. in

  2459. the

  2460. world

  2461. but

  2462. now

  2463. in

  2464. Christ

  2465. Jesus

  2466. you

  2467. who

  2468. were

  2469. once

  2470. far

  2471. off

  2472. have

  2473. been

  2474. brought

  2475. near

  2476. by

  2477. the

  2478. blood

  2479. of

  2480. Christ

  2481. for

  2482. he

  2483. himself

  2484. is

  2485. our

  2486. peace

  2487. who

  2488. has

  2489. made

  2490. us

  2491. both

  2492. one

  2493. and

  2494. has

  2495. broken

  2496. down

  2497. in

  2498. his

  2499. flesh

  2500. the

  2501. dividing

  2502. wall

  2503. of

  2504. hostility

  2505. by

  2506. abolishing

  2507. the

  2508. law

  2509. of

  2510. commandments

  2511. expressed

  2512. in

  2513. ordinances

  2514. that

  2515. he

  2516. might

  2517. create

  2518. in

  2519. himself

  2520. one

  2521. new

  2522. man

  2523. in

  2524. place

  2525. of

  2526. the

  2527. two

  2528. so

  2529. making

  2530. peace

  2531. and

  2532. might

  2533. reconcile

  2534. us

  2535. both

  2536. to

  2537. God

  2538. in

  2539. one

  2540. body

  2541. through

  2542. the

  2543. cross

  2544. thereby

  2545. killing

  2546. the

  2547. hostility

  2548. Paul

  2549. goes on

  2550. he says

  2551. and he

  2552. came

  2553. and he

  2554. preached

  2555. peace

  2556. to

  2557. you

  2558. who

  2559. are

  2560. far

  2561. off

  2562. and

  2563. peace

  2564. to

  2565. those

  2566. who

  2567. are

  2568. near

  2569. for

  2570. through

  2571. him

  2572. we

  2573. both

  2574. have

  2575. access

  2576. in

  2577. one

  2578. spirit

  2579. to

  2580. the

  2581. father

  2582. could

  2583. there

  2584. be a

  2585. more

  2586. sweeping

  2587. vision

  2588. for

  2589. how

  2590. what

  2591. Jesus

  2592. has

  2593. done

  2594. on

  2595. the

  2596. cross

  2597. not

  2598. just

  2599. reconciles

  2600. us

  2601. to

  2602. God

  2603. but

  2604. reconciles

  2605. us

  2606. to

  2607. one

  2608. another

  2609. it

  2610. makes

  2611. peace

  2612. one

  2613. with

  2614. God

  2615. and

  2616. one

  2617. with

  2618. one

  2619. another

  2620. the

  2621. dividing

  2622. wall

  2623. of

  2624. hostility

  2625. that

  2626. separates

  2627. Jew

  2628. and

  2629. Gentile

  2630. and all

  2631. the

  2632. races

  2633. for that

  2634. matter

  2635. and rich

  2636. and poor

  2637. and male

  2638. and female

  2639. and all

  2640. these things

  2641. that divide

  2642. us

  2643. has been

  2644. ripped

  2645. down

  2646. through the

  2647. death

  2648. and the

  2649. resurrection

  2650. of Jesus

  2651. because we

  2652. all come

  2653. to God

  2654. on equal

  2655. terms

  2656. through him

  2657. and he

  2658. now is our

  2659. righteousness

  2660. and our

  2661. peace

  2662. not anything

  2663. else

  2664. peace

  2665. friends

  2666. the

  2667. God

  2668. we

  2669. worship

  2670. is the

  2671. God

  2672. of

  2673. peace

  2674. and our

  2675. gatherings

  2676. ought to be a

  2677. glorious

  2678. display of

  2679. that peace

  2680. and in the

  2681. Bible

  2682. peace is not

  2683. static

  2684. and it's not

  2685. lifeless

  2686. the biblical

  2687. concept of

  2688. peace is rich

  2689. and dynamic

  2690. it replaces

  2691. enmity and

  2692. conflict and

  2693. hostility

  2694. not with the

  2695. mere absence

  2696. of those

  2697. things

  2698. but with the

  2699. presence of

  2700. something positive

  2701. of harmony

  2702. and of right

  2703. relationship

  2704. and of the

  2705. world healed

  2706. and put back

  2707. the way it's

  2708. supposed to be

  2709. imagine a

  2710. highway where

  2711. everyone is

  2712. driving however

  2713. they see fit

  2714. what would that

  2715. look like

  2716. there would be

  2717. accidents and

  2718. chaos everywhere

  2719. and biblical

  2720. peace is not

  2721. just getting

  2722. everyone off the

  2723. road and

  2724. making an

  2725. empty highway

  2726. no biblical

  2727. peace is all

  2728. the cars of

  2729. all kinds

  2730. flowing seamlessly

  2731. to their

  2732. destination

  2733. and so friends

  2734. orderly worship

  2735. isn't necessarily

  2736. going to look

  2737. the same

  2738. everywhere

  2739. it's going to

  2740. take different

  2741. forms and

  2742. different rich

  2743. expressions

  2744. orderly worship

  2745. for our

  2746. Anglican

  2747. brothers and

  2748. sisters will

  2749. look different

  2750. from orderly

  2751. worship among

  2752. our Pentecostal

  2753. brothers and

  2754. sisters right

  2755. and they could

  2756. both be

  2757. upholding

  2758. Paul's

  2759. principle here

  2760. because biblical

  2761. peace displaying

  2762. the God of

  2763. peace biblical

  2764. peace is like a

  2765. great dance

  2766. where the

  2767. dynamic inner

  2768. life of our

  2769. triune God

  2770. Father Son and

  2771. Holy Spirit

  2772. begins to be

  2773. reflected in our

  2774. life together

  2775. so that where

  2776. once we just

  2777. tried to show

  2778. off our gifts

  2779. and pretend and

  2780. perform and make

  2781. ourselves look good

  2782. and as a result

  2783. there was conflict

  2784. and strife

  2785. now because of

  2786. what Jesus has

  2787. done and through

  2788. his spirit

  2789. we care more

  2790. about coming

  2791. together and

  2792. building each

  2793. other up

  2794. and there's

  2795. concord and

  2796. there's compassion

  2797. and there's even

  2798. deference

  2799. and of course

  2800. another name for

  2801. all this is love

  2802. and that's what

  2803. 1 Corinthians 12

  2804. through 14 has

  2805. really been all

  2806. about

  2807. hasn't it

  2808. with chapter 13

  2809. beating like a

  2810. heart in the

  2811. middle of it

  2812. all love a

  2813. love that issues

  2814. in peace and

  2815. friends isn't

  2816. that the gospel

  2817. as James said

  2818. earlier that God

  2819. so loved us that

  2820. he came and he

  2821. paid the penalty

  2822. for our sins to

  2823. give us eternal

  2824. life to give us

  2825. unending peace

  2826. peace and

  2827. friends in our

  2828. chaotic world

  2829. that may be the

  2830. hardest thing

  2831. to come by

  2832. we are hard

  2833. pressed to even

  2834. get a glimpse

  2835. of peace

  2836. but the vision

  2837. here is that in

  2838. our life together

  2839. as the church

  2840. that here

  2841. there's actually

  2842. a foretaste

  2843. of it

  2844. that here

  2845. the hurting

  2846. world can actually

  2847. see something

  2848. different

  2849. they can actually

  2850. see God's

  2851. peace on display

  2852. that they can

  2853. find a people

  2854. of peace

  2855. displaying

  2856. the God

  2857. of peace

  2858. the God

  2859. who made

  2860. peace for his

  2861. enemies through

  2862. his own death

  2863. on a cross

  2864. and of course

  2865. Paul's vision

  2866. isn't just that

  2867. they'd see it

  2868. on Sunday

  2869. mornings

  2870. but as we

  2871. go out from

  2872. here they'd

  2873. see it in

  2874. all that we

  2875. do

  2876. in our

  2877. families

  2878. in our

  2879. work

  2880. in our

  2881. relationships

  2882. with our

  2883. neighbors

  2884. that there

  2885. would just

  2886. be an aroma

  2887. of something

  2888. different

  2889. of peace

  2890. so you see

  2891. friends orderly

  2892. worship isn't

  2893. just order for

  2894. order's sake

  2895. ultimately

  2896. at its highest

  2897. end it's a

  2898. reflection of

  2899. God's own

  2900. character

  2901. it's a

  2902. reflection of

  2903. that character

  2904. out into the

  2905. world God

  2906. has made

  2907. this world

  2908. that God

  2909. aims to

  2910. restore and

  2911. to renew

  2912. does that

  2913. seem stunning

  2914. to you

  2915. could something

  2916. as small

  2917. as our

  2918. public worship

  2919. gathering

  2920. really play

  2921. that big

  2922. of a part

  2923. in God's

  2924. purposes in

  2925. the world

  2926. giving people

  2927. a glimpse

  2928. of who God

  2929. is

  2930. hands down

  2931. the Bible

  2932. would say

  2933. yes

  2934. yes it

  2935. does

  2936. and let's

  2937. pray that

  2938. our worship

  2939. gatherings

  2940. and our

  2941. life together

  2942. do the

  2943. same thing

  2944. let's pray

  2945. together

  2946. God we

  2947. praise you

  2948. as the

  2949. God of

  2950. peace

  2951. and we

  2952. ask that

  2953. we would

  2954. be a

  2955. people of

  2956. peace

  2957. Lord not

  2958. just in how

  2959. we conduct

  2960. ourselves on

  2961. Sunday but

  2962. in all of

  2963. our

  2964. relationships

  2965. we need

  2966. your spirit

  2967. to make

  2968. this happen

  2969. God so

  2970. often we

  2971. have fallen

  2972. short as

  2973. your church

  2974. but thank you

  2975. that you have

  2976. not left us

  2977. but you've

  2978. given us your

  2979. holy spirit

  2980. to work out

  2981. this peace

  2982. that you've

  2983. granted us

  2984. so God

  2985. heal us

  2986. make us a

  2987. loving people

  2988. and help

  2989. this world

  2990. that you love

  2991. our city

  2992. that you love

  2993. so much

  2994. to see

  2995. peace

  2996. in and

  2997. through us

  2998. we pray

  2999. this in your

  3000. name Jesus

  3001. our prince of

  3002. peace

  3003. amen

  3004. well friends

  3005. the music team

  3006. is going to

  3007. come up and

  3008. lead us in a

  3009. final hymn

  3010. and let's

  3011. use the

  3012. words of

  3013. this hymn

  3014. as a means

  3015. of just

  3016. meditating on

  3017. and reflecting

  3018. and taking

  3019. into our

  3020. hearts the

  3021. message of

  3022. our passage

  3023. this morning

  3024. would you

  3025. stand

  3026. beneath the

  3027. cross of

  3028. Jesus

  3029. I find a

  3030. place to

  3031. stand

  3032. and wonder

  3033. at such

  3034. mercy

  3035. that

  3036. upholds

  3037. me

  3038. as I

  3039. am

  3040. for

  3041. hands

  3042. that should

  3043. discard

  3044. me

  3045. hold

  3046. wounds

  3047. which tell

  3048. me

  3049. come

  3050. beneath

  3051. the cross

  3052. of

  3053. Jesus

  3054. my

  3055. undirty

  3056. soul

  3057. is

  3058. beneath

  3059. the cross

  3060. of

  3061. Jesus

  3062. his

  3063. family

  3064. is

  3065. my

  3066. own

  3067. what

  3068. strangers

  3069. chasing

  3070. selfish

  3071. dreams

  3072. of

  3073. the grace

  3074. of

  3075. how

  3076. could

  3077. I

  3078. now

  3079. dissout

  3080. the

  3081. ones

  3082. that

  3083. you

  3084. have

  3085. known

  3086. beneath

  3087. the cross

  3088. of

  3089. Jesus

  3090. see

  3091. the

  3092. children

  3093. call

  3094. my

  3095. God

  3096. love

  3097. beneath

  3098. the cross

  3099. of

  3100. Jesus

  3101. above

  3102. before

  3103. the

  3104. cross

  3105. we

  3106. follow

  3107. in

  3108. his

  3109. footsteps

  3110. where

  3111. the

  3112. promise

  3113. to

  3114. his

  3115. heart

  3116. how

  3117. great

  3118. the

  3119. joy

  3120. before

  3121. us

  3122. to

  3123. be

  3124. his

  3125. perfect

  3126. God

  3127. beneath

  3128. the

  3129. cross

  3130. of

  3131. Jesus

  3132. we

  3133. will

  3134. bear

  3135. in

  3136. the

  3137. lives

  3138. friends

  3139. hear the

  3140. benediction

  3141. now may

  3142. the

  3143. God

  3144. of

  3145. peace

  3146. who

  3147. brought

  3148. again

  3149. from

  3150. the

  3151. dead

  3152. our

  3153. Lord

  3154. Jesus

  3155. the

  3156. great

  3157. shepherd

  3158. of

  3159. the

  3160. sheep

  3161. by

  3162. the

  3163. blood

  3164. of

  3165. the

  3166. eternal

  3167. covenant

  3168. equip

  3169. you

  3170. with

  3171. everything

  3172. good

  3173. that

  3174. you

  3175. may

  3176. do

  3177. his

  3178. will

  3179. working

  3180. in

  3181. us

  3182. that

  3183. which

  3184. is

  3185. pleasing

  3186. in

  3187. his

  3188. sight

  3189. through

  3190. Jesus

  3191. Christ

  3192. to

  3193. whom

  3194. be

  3195. glory

  3196. forever

  3197. and

  3198. ever

  3199. amen

  3200. friends

  3201. go

  3202. in

  3203. peace

  3204. you

  3205. you

  3206. Thank you.
