  1. Well, tonight we're looking at Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  2. So if you want to turn there in a Bible, that would be great.

  3. Looking at one of Jesus' parables.

  4. Last week we looked at the parable of the persistent widow,

  5. teaching us that we should pray always and not lose heart.

  6. Jesus talks about his people who cry out to him day and night.

  7. So that parable encourages us to pray and to keep on praying.

  8. And this parable that we're looking at tonight teaches us how to pray,

  9. the attitude with which we should come before God.

  10. In particular, humbling ourselves and exalting God rather than vice versa.

  11. So Luke 18 verse 9 to 14, let me read this parable for us.

    Luke 18:9–14

  12. 18, Luke 18.

  13. Yep, page 877 in the Pew Bible.

  14. There we go.

  15. Luke 18, beginning at verse 9.

  16. He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous

  17. and treated others with contempt.

  18. Two men went up into the temple to pray.

  19. One a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

  20. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus,

  21. God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers,

  22. or even like this tax collector.

  23. I fast twice a week.

  24. I give tithes of all I get.

  25. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven,

  26. but beat his breast, saying,

  27. God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

  28. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other.

  29. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,

  30. but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.

  31. This is God's word.

  32. Well, appearances can be deceiving.

  33. Recently, I was looking on Craigslist

  34. because I was trying to help somebody who was looking for a new apartment.

  35. And I've never had to use Craigslist to find an apartment,

  36. but maybe you have,

  37. or maybe you've done that along with somebody else.

  38. And if you've done that, you know that the photos posted

  39. and the descriptions listed

  40. do not always match the reality of the property.

  41. So, some experiences I've had,

  42. a friend of mine said,

  43. oh, I saw this house that's posted for rent.

  44. And it happened to be a block down from where we used to live.

  45. But in front of the house was a for sale sign.

  46. He said, but no, on Craigslist, it says it's for rent,

  47. not for sale.

  48. Well, it was a scam.

  49. It was a complete scam.

  50. It wasn't for rent at all.

  51. The person who was posting on Craigslist

  52. didn't even own the house.

  53. Another one, my wife and I,

  54. this didn't involve Craigslist,

  55. but my wife and I, several years ago,

  56. were just sort of looking at houses in New Haven.

  57. And we weren't even really wanting to buy one,

  58. but we just wanted to sort of see what was out there.

  59. And so, we talked to a realtor.

  60. And the realtor said,

  61. here's a few houses.

  62. Let me take you this one.

  63. So, we walk up to the second floor.

  64. And literally, from one side of the room to the other,

  65. you could almost slide down.

  66. Like, there was at least a two-foot difference in height,

  67. and there was no steps.

  68. The floor was, the house had settled into the ground.

  69. And so, the floors had become completely warped.

  70. Of course, you would never know that from any description

  71. that was posted about it.

  72. But even the realtor said, after looking at that,

  73. you don't want to buy that house.

  74. I could go on, but you get the point.

  75. Now, what we see in this passage

  76. is that appearances can be deceiving in church as well.

  77. The Pharisee, there's two,

  78. this parable's pretty simple, right?

  79. There's the Pharisee and the tax collector.

  80. Two guys, they both go up to the temple,

  81. they both stand there praying,

  82. and the Pharisee had an appearance of righteousness.

  83. Now, if you've read the Bible a lot,

  84. or if you've been in church for a long time,

  85. and you hear the word Pharisee,

  86. you might think that means a hypocrite.

  87. Someone who just pretends to be religious,

  88. but they really aren't.

  89. But in Jesus' day, that's not what people would have thought.

  90. So, the Jewish historian Josephus said,

  91. the Pharisees are, described the Pharisees as,

  92. a class of Jews, a group of Jews,

  93. who consider themselves the godliest of the nation,

  94. and the most rigorous followers of the law.

  95. For the most part, that's who they sought to be.

  96. The name Pharisee means either separated ones or holy ones.

  97. And that's what they sought to be,

  98. is separated and holy unto God.

  99. So, the Pharisees knew the Bible,

  100. and they studied it very carefully.

  101. Unlike the Sadducees, who was another Jewish group at that time,

  102. the Sadducees only believed in the first five books of the Bible,

  103. the books of Moses.

  104. The Pharisees believed in the whole Scripture,

  105. the whole Old Testament,

  106. all 39 books.

  107. The Pharisees, unlike the Sadducees,

  108. believed in the resurrection.

  109. They believed in angels.

  110. They believed in demons,

  111. because the Bible talks about them.

  112. They believed in all those things.

  113. They could explain to you all those things.

  114. They could explain to you about God's sovereignty,

  115. and human responsibility,

  116. and how they fit together.

  117. And they had good explanations for that.

  118. And they not only adhered carefully to all the Scriptures,

  119. but they also knew the history of,

  120. the interpretation of them.

  121. And they followed the oral traditions of the rabbis.

  122. Besides that, the Pharisees were honest,

  123. and law-abiding citizens,

  124. unlike the Zealots,

  125. who were violent revolutionaries.

  126. They were well-respected in the broader community,

  127. unlike the Herodians,

  128. another group who were sort of involved

  129. in corrupt political schemes.

  130. Right?

  131. The Pharisees, it seemed like they were the best group of them all.

  132. They were honest, law-abiding, upstanding citizens.

  133. They knew the Bible.

  134. They believed in God.

  135. This Pharisee was faithful in his marriage.

  136. He says, I'm not an adulterer.

  137. He paid his workers.

  138. He said, I'm not an extortioner.

  139. He, um,

  140. and he didn't just do the minimum that God's law required.

  141. He went over and beyond.

  142. He fasted twice a week.

  143. Now, the law only required people to fast once a year,

  144. on the Day of Atonement.

  145. But the Pharisees had developed a practice of fasting

  146. on Mondays and Thursdays,

  147. and praying,

  148. as part of their devotion to God.

  149. And he says,

  150. I tithe on everything I get.

  151. Now, again, strictly speaking,

  152. the law only required tithing on flocks, crops, wine, and oil.

  153. Sort of the main things.

  154. But the Pharisees even tithe from their herbs.

  155. Right?

  156. They'd pick their mint from their plant,

  157. and they'd make sure to tithe.

  158. One piece of mint for every ten pieces they took for,

  159. you know, nine pieces they took for themselves.

  160. Right?

  161. They were very careful.

  162. They did all these things.

  163. The Pharisee seems quite confident and comfortable

  164. coming into the temple to pray.

  165. He stands.

  166. He prays.

  167. He walks confidently.

  168. He feels comfortable when he comes in.

  169. Right?

  170. So if you think of a Pharisee,

  171. you think of like a regular churchgoer,

  172. someone who lives a moral life,

  173. someone who has a good reputation,

  174. someone who goes above and beyond

  175. what God's law requires in some ways.

  176. He's the kind of person that you would look at and think,

  177. if anybody is a righteous man,

  178. that would be a righteous man.

  179. On almost everyone's definition.

  180. Now, contrast,

  181. the tax collector.

  182. So the tax collector would have worked for the government.

  183. And back then,

  184. the government was the Roman Empire,

  185. and everyone agreed.

  186. There was no disagreement.

  187. Everyone agreed the Roman Empire was oppressive and unjust.

  188. And the tax collector's profits came from extorting,

  189. the extortion of their own people.

  190. The way that many tax collectors' jobs worked was,

  191. their boss would say,

  192. you have this area of land,

  193. from Jerusalem,

  194. to Bethlehem,

  195. to Nazareth,

  196. or wherever.

  197. Right?

  198. These three cities,

  199. and the area in between them.

  200. And at the end of the year,

  201. you need to deliver to me

  202. 10,000 denarii,

  203. or whatever.

  204. Right?

  205. You know, a million bucks.

  206. So you go collect your taxes.

  207. And your salary is whatever you collect,

  208. on top of that.

  209. And so the tax collectors,

  210. many of them became very rich,

  211. because they found ways

  212. to get a lot of money from the people.

  213. And so,

  214. you know,

  215. there were lots of things that the different,

  216. the different Jewish groups,

  217. the different Jewish rabbis,

  218. disagreed on.

  219. But one thing they all agreed on,

  220. in Jesus' time,

  221. the rabbis agreed that it was okay

  222. to lie and deceive tax collectors,

  223. because they were considered so corrupt.

  224. And they were in the same category

  225. as thieves and murderers.

  226. Like, tax collectors,

  227. thieves,

  228. and murderers.

  229. Those kind of people.

  230. You don't,

  231. you don't even have to tell them the truth,

  232. because they're so corrupt,

  233. and so unreliable,

  234. and so wrong.

  235. Wrong.

  236. So,

  237. a Jewish man who collected taxes

  238. would have been expelled from his synagogue,

  239. disqualified from being a witness in court,

  240. and seen as a disgrace to his family.

  241. Tax collectors were despised and hated.

  242. So, let me just give you a few modern examples,

  243. some of them might resonate more with you than others,

  244. about what a tax collector might have looked like.

  245. So, think about the owner of a strip club,

  246. or the CEO of a casino

  247. that intentionally seeks to make money off compulsive gamblers,

  248. or a slum lord,

  249. or a slum lord,

  250. who never fixes up his rat and roach infested houses,

  251. and just wants to make a lot of money off him,

  252. or a drug dealer,

  253. who runs the streets in the hood,

  254. or the big dude,

  255. who owns the pawn shop,

  256. who's probably connected with the mafia.

  257. Yeah.

  258. That's what a tax collector would have been like.

  259. He was working for a shady business,

  260. and he was benefiting from it.

  261. And when this guy walked into the temple,

  262. you can see he wasn't used to being there.

  263. I mean, if this was the temple,

  264. this isn't a temple,

  265. it's just where we meet together,

  266. but if this was the temple and he walked in,

  267. he would have sat in the back right behind that pillar,

  268. where nobody would see him,

  269. and nobody would notice him,

  270. because he felt like,

  271. I don't belong here,

  272. and I'm not used to being here.

  273. Now, that's why the end of Jesus' parable is so surprising.

  274. Look at verse 14.

  275. Jesus says,

  276. I tell you,

  277. this man,

  278. the tax collector,

  279. went down to his house justified.

  280. That means righteous.

  281. That means right with God.

  282. That means forgiven.

  283. That means accepted into God's family.

  284. Having God's stamp of approval.

  285. That's what justified means.

  286. Rather than the other.

  287. Jesus is saying,

  288. at the end of the day,

  289. the tax collector was righteous before God,

  290. and the Pharisee was not.

  291. You see how surprising,

  292. and even scandalous of a story this would have been,

  293. for Jesus' hearers.

  294. Right?

  295. Especially for any who were Pharisees.

  296. Now, why?

  297. Why does Jesus say this?

  298. Jesus sees the reality that goes deeper than the appearance.

  299. See, if you look at what the Pharisee prays,

  300. his prayer is all about himself.

  301. He starts with the word God.

  302. God, I thank you.

  303. And then he just starts talking about himself.

  304. Do you notice how many times he says,

  305. I?

  306. God, I thank you that I

  307. am not like other men.

  308. I fast twice a week.

  309. I give tithes of all I get.

  310. God, I thank you that I am.

  311. It's all about how,

  312. what he does

  313. makes him better

  314. than everybody else.

  315. Verse 11 could even be translated,

  316. it could be translated,

  317. the Pharisee standing by himself,

  318. prayed,

  319. or it could be translated,

  320. the Pharisee standing,

  321. prayed to himself.

  322. right it's interesting the pharisee's prayer puts himself in the center and god on the edges

  323. the tax collector's prayer is the opposite

  324. tax collector humbles himself in light of a holy god

  325. he says god be merciful to me a sinner

  326. now the pharisee's prayer is much longer than the tax collector's tax collector's prayer is very short

  327. and it's not wordy he's probably not used to praying a lot but he gets right to the point of it

  328. god be merciful to me a sinner

  329. and he uses a very interesting word when he says be merciful it's the word that is usually

  330. translated god make atonement for me it's the word that was used to describe what the high priest did

  331. when he went into the holy place once a year and he offered a sacrifice to cleanse the people of

  332. israel from all their sins and he went and he offered that sacrifice before what was called

  333. the mercy seat called the hilasterion and that's the same word that's called the mercy seat sort of where

  334. god

  335. offered his forgiveness to the people through the sacrifice that the priest offered on their behalf

  336. and the people received mercy as a result and that's what the tax collector says god make atonement for me

  337. make a sacrifice for me to make me clean

  338. she doesn't come parading his own accomplishments he has he knows that he has nothing to offer to god

  339. he comes simply empty-handed saying god have mercy on me that's the only way i can come before you

  340. is if you have mercy and if you cover over my sins by a sacrifice

  341. and at the end of the day jesus said he went home

  342. justified before god

  343. he was right with god at the end of the day and jesus i mean how amazing is that jesus doesn't say

  344. well at the end of the day the tax collector was a little closer than the pharisee

  345. no he doesn't say at the end of the day the tax collector had made a couple steps in the right

  346. direction and maybe if he kept on making steps in the right direction then he would be approved and

  347. accepted and forgiven by god no he says he went down to his house when he left that temple

  348. god he was right with god

  349. and the pharisee despite all the good things he did

  350. wasn't

  351. now

  352. what do we take away from this

  353. i want to say three things

  354. three applications three things that we can take away from this passage number one

  355. it's a word of warning

  356. it says jesus told this parable

  357. to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and treated others with contempt

  358. and so this parable is perhaps primarily a warning

  359. it's not just what you do that matters it also matters why you do it

  360. you know there are many things that can motivate people

  361. to act in ways that look good and appear righteous

  362. two of those things are pride

  363. wanting to preserve your own reputation

  364. and fear of other people

  365. wanting to please others

  366. and wanting their approval

  367. and if you combine both of those things

  368. those two things put together can motivate you to do a lot of

  369. good things

  370. well

  371. because you know if there's something that's

  372. you're tempted to do

  373. that's bad

  374. but you think that you'll be found out

  375. and it'll be embarrassing

  376. then you're not going to do it

  377. because you don't want to be embarrassed

  378. or if you think people will look at you

  379. in a more negative light

  380. you won't do it

  381. because you think

  382. somebody's not going to think so well of me

  383. I mean if you put just those two things together

  384. pride and the fear of man

  385. fear of other people

  386. that can motivate all kinds of good things

  387. it can motivate fasting and praying

  388. it can motivate tithing

  389. right especially the way the Pharisees did it very publicly

  390. so that everybody knew

  391. it can motivate you to come to church

  392. maybe not so much here in New England

  393. right you don't get a lot of social props from coming to church here

  394. but in some places

  395. right that's the respectable thing to do on Sunday

  396. sometimes people come up here from other parts of the country

  397. and that's really the reason they went to church

  398. their family did it

  399. or

  400. most of their friends did it

  401. or

  402. you know

  403. it just sort of feels like the right thing to do

  404. and you

  405. you know

  406. and then you come

  407. to a place like this

  408. and you have to examine your motives

  409. you have to say

  410. why do I come here

  411. see it's not just what you do that matters

  412. it also matters why you do it

  413. and this is also sometimes

  414. why people who seem to be

  415. very good and moral upstanding citizens

  416. sometimes get caught

  417. with horrible things

  418. whether it's a crime that lands them in jail

  419. or a secret sin

  420. that nobody knows about

  421. or a pattern of

  422. abusive or controlling behavior

  423. behavior that

  424. lies under the surface

  425. it's because

  426. the things that are motivating

  427. to do all the good things

  428. all the things that make them appear good

  429. in some circumstances

  430. let's say if

  431. if somebody gets

  432. if they get criticized

  433. they're gonna blast you off

  434. because don't you dare criticize me

  435. right

  436. or maybe you get the silent treatment as a result

  437. so there's a warning

  438. it's possible to do everything the Pharisee did

  439. and go home

  440. not right with God

  441. and facing ultimately God's judgment

  442. and punishment

  443. and that's a

  444. that's a

  445. a serious warning

  446. now how can we know

  447. well I'll get to that later

  448. how can we know if we're

  449. if we're falling into that Pharisee trap

  450. I'll get to that in a minute

  451. so it's a word of warning

  452. but it's also a word of hope

  453. it's a word of hope for

  454. people like the tax collector

  455. if you feel like

  456. when you come to church

  457. or when you hang out with Christians

  458. if there's some part of

  459. if there's a big party that feels like

  460. I just feel like I don't quite belong here

  461. I don't

  462. I know that I don't measure up

  463. and some other people

  464. you look at them

  465. and they're clearly more mature than I am

  466. and I just

  467. I just don't know

  468. whether I really belong here

  469. and so maybe some days

  470. you don't come to church

  471. because you really feel that

  472. and so you stay away

  473. or you don't pursue Christian friendships

  474. because you feel that shame

  475. and you know deep down inside

  476. you're not worthy

  477. to come before God

  478. and come among his people

  479. there's a word of hope

  480. for you

  481. because Jesus said

  482. the tax collector went down to his house

  483. justified before God

  484. that God looked upon him with favor

  485. and mercy

  486. and grace

  487. and that word justified

  488. it's a

  489. it's like the judge's gavel

  490. right

  491. if you ever had to deal with the courts

  492. or if you've gone with people to court

  493. what happens the first time you go to court

  494. they continue it

  495. then what happens the second time

  496. they continue it again

  497. right

  498. and again

  499. and it's not unusual to have

  500. right

  501. five six seven eight court dates

  502. dealing with the same thing

  503. because they

  504. take a long time to make decisions

  505. that word justified

  506. is as if you walk into court before God

  507. and the judge slams the gavel down

  508. and says you are not guilty

  509. you can go free

  510. I mean

  511. how liberating that is

  512. if you come into God's presence

  513. and you know that you don't deserve to be there

  514. and you know that you're actually guilty

  515. and yet you hear

  516. in Jesus Christ

  517. God the Father

  518. saying to you

  519. Jesus Christ has made atonement for you

  520. and so

  521. I will have mercy on you

  522. it's the most liberating thing in the world

  523. I mean it's amazing if

  524. if you've ever been in a court case

  525. and you've

  526. or you know someone who's been there

  527. right

  528. and they've been under the weight

  529. of this fear

  530. of what's going to happen

  531. am I going to get thrown in jail

  532. am I going to have to pay a fine

  533. how am I going to pay the fine

  534. I don't have any money anyway

  535. and you get that verdict

  536. not guilty

  537. set free

  538. how much more

  539. if that is the verdict

  540. that you have before the God

  541. who created all things

  542. before the judge

  543. of the universe

  544. and that's what Jesus says

  545. we can have

  546. through him

  547. so there's a word of hope

  548. for tax collectors

  549. I mean

  550. just consider

  551. some of the people we consider

  552. great leaders in the Bible

  553. just three

  554. Moses

  555. well when Moses was young

  556. and impulsive

  557. he killed an Egyptian

  558. he murdered someone

  559. who was beating up

  560. on his fellow Hebrew

  561. now yes

  562. was he trying to do justice

  563. yeah

  564. but did he murder someone

  565. yeah he murdered someone

  566. and so he had to run away

  567. for 40 years

  568. he had to face

  569. some of the consequences

  570. of that

  571. but God wasn't done with him

  572. and God took Moses

  573. who was prone to

  574. impulsive anger

  575. and made him into

  576. the leader of God's people

  577. or think about David

  578. when he was middle aged

  579. and

  580. didn't have quite enough

  581. what to do

  582. and he fell into adultery

  583. with Bathsheba

  584. and then he

  585. arranged for her husband

  586. to be killed

  587. great King David

  588. a man after God's own heart

  589. and that's what he did

  590. a horrible

  591. evil

  592. thing

  593. or Paul

  594. who had persecuted Christians

  595. and when Stephen was being stoned

  596. he stood there

  597. giving his approval

  598. personally

  599. you know nearly all of the great leaders

  600. in the Bible

  601. had some pretty serious character flaws

  602. and or

  603. moral failures

  604. nearly all of them

  605. but what happened

  606. what's the difference

  607. I mean the Bible says

  608. the wages of sin is death

  609. but what happened

  610. so that their sin

  611. did not result

  612. in death

  613. and judgment

  614. if you look at King David

  615. King David wrote a psalm

  616. Psalm 51

  617. he wrote the psalm I quoted

  618. Psalm 32

  619. that I quoted at the beginning of the service

  620. but he also wrote Psalm 51

  621. and if you look back there

  622. Psalm 51

  623. page 474

  624. in the Pew Bible

  625. the psalm begins this way

  626. well it's

  627. the title says

  628. the psalm

  629. a psalm of David

  630. when Nathan the prophet

  631. went to him

  632. Nathan had confronted him

  633. after he had gone into Bathsheba

  634. after he had committed adultery

  635. with Bathsheba

  636. and David said

  637. have mercy on me

  638. oh God

  639. according to your steadfast love

  640. according to your abundant mercy

  641. blot out my transgressions

  642. wash me thoroughly

  643. from my iniquity

  644. and cleanse me

  645. from my sin

  646. David didn't make any excuses

  647. he didn't come to God

  648. and say

  649. but God

  650. I've been a pretty good king

  651. I've been a really good king

  652. I mean

  653. you know

  654. when Saul was coming after me

  655. I didn't kill him

  656. I mean

  657. yeah

  658. I sort of

  659. messed up here

  660. but

  661. but you know

  662. I've still done a lot of good

  663. I really deserve to be

  664. blessed for all the good I've done

  665. no

  666. he doesn't do any of that

  667. he says

  668. have mercy on me

  669. oh God

  670. according to your

  671. steadfast love

  672. and he goes on

  673. I know my transgressions

  674. my sin is ever before me

  675. against you

  676. and you only

  677. have I sinned

  678. have I sinned

  679. and done what is evil

  680. in your sight

  681. so that you may be justified

  682. in your words

  683. and blameless in your judgment

  684. he goes on

  685. he doesn't hide his sin

  686. he doesn't excuse it

  687. he doesn't explain it away

  688. he has both

  689. a general sense

  690. of his sinfulness

  691. and a specific

  692. concrete

  693. understanding

  694. of his specific

  695. concrete

  696. failures

  697. what I want to end with is

  698. my third point of application

  699. it's a word of warning

  700. it's a word of hope

  701. but what's the difference

  702. what's the difference

  703. between the Pharisee

  704. and the tax collector

  705. right

  706. and how can we tell

  707. how can we

  708. how can we have

  709. how can we

  710. see

  711. in our own hearts

  712. what that looks like

  713. and I think

  714. one thing we see

  715. in

  716. in David's psalm

  717. and in the tax collector

  718. is

  719. he has both

  720. he has a sense of

  721. his own sin

  722. both generally

  723. and specifically

  724. now some people

  725. have a sense of their own sin

  726. generally

  727. so they'll say

  728. oh yes

  729. I'm a sinner

  730. you know

  731. yeah I'm not perfect

  732. I acknowledge that

  733. but then if you actually

  734. ask them

  735. so

  736. are there any

  737. but if you

  738. if you listen to them

  739. they never actually admit

  740. any particular things

  741. that they've done wrong

  742. if you ask them

  743. you know

  744. are you a sinner

  745. before God

  746. they'll say yes

  747. I am

  748. but if you confront them

  749. about something specific

  750. they've done wrong

  751. then they'll say

  752. but

  753. well I had a reason

  754. for doing that

  755. and I have an explanation

  756. for this

  757. and really

  758. no it wasn't that

  759. now other people

  760. are the reverse

  761. other people

  762. will sort of

  763. reluctantly admit

  764. that they have

  765. committed sin

  766. in very specific areas

  767. but in general

  768. they would say

  769. but generally

  770. I'm a good person

  771. I just

  772. okay

  773. I did

  774. I admit it

  775. I lied

  776. I was wrong

  777. I shouldn't have said that

  778. but

  779. generally

  780. I'm a good person

  781. David has both

  782. a sense of his

  783. general

  784. sinfulness

  785. he says

  786. against you

  787. have I sinned

  788. even from my mother's womb

  789. I've been born in sin

  790. but he also

  791. confesses

  792. yes

  793. I committed adultery

  794. yes

  795. I did that

  796. that's one of the

  797. ways we can

  798. see

  799. that the Holy Spirit

  800. is actually bringing

  801. conviction to our hearts

  802. and shining his light

  803. in our hearts

  804. is that

  805. we have both a general

  806. and a specific sense

  807. of our sin

  808. okay

  809. if you look at the tax

  810. collector in the parable

  811. he calls himself

  812. a sinner

  813. right

  814. he has a general

  815. sense of sin

  816. and then if you look

  817. at Zacchaeus

  818. in the next chapter

  819. who's also a tax

  820. collector

  821. he confesses

  822. a very specific

  823. sin

  824. you know

  825. if I've defrauded

  826. anyone

  827. I will pay them

  828. back

  829. he's actually

  830. willing to

  831. make amends

  832. so

  833. if you combine

  834. those two

  835. you see both

  836. but I think

  837. that's one way

  838. we can tell

  839. the Holy Spirit

  840. is working in our hearts

  841. when we have

  842. both a general

  843. and specific

  844. sense of sin

  845. second thing

  846. the Holy Spirit

  847. produces

  848. is

  849. the fear

  850. of the Lord

  851. and that

  852. word

  853. the fear

  854. of the Lord

  855. is used

  856. throughout

  857. a lot

  858. of the Bible

  859. and it doesn't

  860. just mean

  861. being afraid

  862. of God

  863. and it doesn't

  864. mean being

  865. terrified

  866. by God

  867. and running

  868. away from him

  869. it means having

  870. it means

  871. having God

  872. at the center

  873. of our picture

  874. and living in

  875. reverent obedience

  876. before him

  877. but it also

  878. means

  879. Psalm 130

  880. the end of

  881. Psalm 130

  882. sorry the middle

  883. of Psalm 130

  884. Psalm 130

    Psalms 130:4

  885. verse 4

  886. verse 3 and 4

  887. says

  888. if you oh Lord

  889. should mark

  890. iniquities

  891. oh Lord

  892. who could stand

  893. in other words

  894. if God kept

  895. a list

  896. of all our

  897. sins

  898. no one

  899. would pass

  900. the test

  901. but he says

  902. but with you

  903. there is

  904. forgiveness

  905. that you

  906. may be

  907. feared

  908. so the fear

  909. of the Lord

  910. is the kind

  911. of fear

  912. it's like

  913. the kind

  914. of fear

  915. that

  916. a child

  917. would have

  918. if they were

  919. wandering

  920. into a busy

  921. street

  922. and their

  923. parents

  924. suddenly

  925. snatched

  926. them out

  927. of traffic

  928. and they

  929. realized

  930. that if

  931. their parent

  932. hadn't

  933. snatched

  934. them out

  935. of traffic

  936. the bus

  937. would have

  938. run over

  939. them

  940. and so

  941. what do

  942. they do

  943. after that

  944. they start

  945. listening

  946. to their

  947. parent

  948. they start

  949. obeying

  950. their parent

  951. they start

  952. trusting

  953. their parent

  954. even when

  955. they don't

  956. understand

  957. what their

  958. reason

  959. for their

  960. parents

  961. commands

  962. they have

  963. a right

  964. kind of

  965. fear

  966. of their

  967. mother

  968. or father

  969. and that's

  970. the kind

  971. of fear

  972. of the

  973. Lord

  974. that the

  975. Bible

  976. is talking

  977. about

  978. that's

  979. the kind

  980. of fear

  981. of the

  982. Lord

  983. the tax

  984. collector

  985. had

  986. he stood

  987. at a

  988. distance

  989. he beat

  990. his

  991. breast

  992. and the

  993. way

  994. those

  995. verbs

  996. are

  997. written

  998. it's

  999. an

  1000. ongoing

  1001. action

  1002. it's

  1003. not

  1004. just

  1005. a

  1006. one

  1007. time

  1008. demonstration

  1009. but it's

  1010. an ongoing

  1011. posture

  1012. of repentance

  1013. and confessing

  1014. his sin

  1015. and acknowledging

  1016. he's unworthy

  1017. to stand

  1018. before God

  1019. so he has

  1020. a kind

  1021. of a

  1022. fear

  1023. of the

  1024. Lord

  1025. knowing

  1026. who he

  1027. is

  1028. in light

  1029. of God's

  1030. holiness

  1031. and then

  1032. knowing

  1033. who he

  1034. is

  1035. in light

  1036. of God's

  1037. mercy

  1038. so sin

  1039. general and

  1040. specific

  1041. fear of

  1042. the

  1043. Lord

  1044. and

  1045. three

  1046. our

  1047. attitude

  1048. our

  1049. attitude

  1050. towards

  1051. prayer

  1052. and other

  1053. good works

  1054. let me

  1055. end with

  1056. you can

  1057. turn to

  1058. Philippians

  1059. I want to

  1060. end with a

  1061. verse from

  1062. Philippians

  1063. because

  1064. Paul

  1065. in

  1066. Philippians

  1067. chapter

  1068. three

  1069. page

  1070. 981

  1071. if you're

  1072. looking

  1073. at a

  1074. pew

  1075. bible

  1076. Paul

  1077. describes

  1078. himself

  1079. as a

  1080. Pharisee

  1081. that

  1082. was

  1083. the

  1084. school

  1085. that

  1086. was

  1087. the

  1088. apostle

  1089. Paul

  1090. was

  1091. trained

  1092. in

  1093. he

  1094. would

  1095. have

  1096. fit

  1097. the

  1098. description

  1099. of

  1100. this

  1101. guy

  1102. who

  1103. came

  1104. to

  1105. the

  1106. temple

  1107. fasting

  1108. twice

  1109. a

  1110. week

  1111. giving

  1112. tithes

  1113. of

  1114. all

  1115. I

  1116. get

  1117. he

  1118. knew

  1119. the

  1120. scriptures

  1121. he

  1122. was

  1123. an

  1124. upstanding

  1125. citizen

  1126. of course

  1127. he persecuted

  1128. Christians

  1129. because he

  1130. thought that

  1131. he should

  1132. at one

  1133. point

  1134. but

  1135. but this

  1136. is what

  1137. he says

  1138. in

  1139. Philippians

  1140. chapter

  1141. three

  1142. verse

  1143. seven

  1144. and on

  1145. he says

  1146. whatever gain

  1147. I had

  1148. in other

  1149. words

  1150. whatever

  1151. gain

  1152. I

  1153. had

  1154. whatever

  1155. privileges

  1156. I

  1157. had

  1158. from

  1159. being

  1160. born

  1161. into

  1162. a

  1163. certain

  1164. family

  1165. whatever

  1166. moral

  1167. accomplishments

  1168. I

  1169. had

  1170. as a

  1171. Pharisee

  1172. whatever

  1173. gain

  1174. I

  1175. had

  1176. I

  1177. counted

  1178. as

  1179. loss

  1180. for the

  1181. sake

  1182. of

  1183. Christ

  1184. indeed

  1185. I

  1186. counted

  1187. I

  1188. count

  1189. everything

  1190. as

  1191. loss

  1192. because

  1193. of

  1194. the

  1195. surpassing

  1196. worth

  1197. of

  1198. knowing

  1199. Christ

  1200. Jesus

  1201. my

  1202. Lord

  1203. for

  1204. his

  1205. sake

  1206. I

  1207. have

  1208. suffered

  1209. the

  1210. loss

  1211. of

  1212. all

  1213. things

  1214. and

  1215. count

  1216. them

  1217. as

  1218. rubbish

  1219. and

  1220. here's

  1221. where

  1222. it

  1223. is

  1224. not

  1225. having

  1226. a

  1227. righteousness

  1228. of

  1229. my

  1230. own

  1231. that

  1232. comes

  1233. from

  1234. the

  1235. law

  1236. but

  1237. that

  1238. which

  1239. comes

  1240. through

  1241. faith

  1242. in

  1243. Christ

  1244. the

  1245. righteousness

  1246. from

  1247. God

  1248. that

  1249. depends

  1250. on

  1251. faith

  1252. you

  1253. see

  1254. the

  1255. apostle

  1256. Paul

  1257. found

  1258. righteousness

  1259. from

  1260. God

  1261. not

  1262. by

  1263. his

  1264. efforts

  1265. and

  1266. his

  1267. works

  1268. but

  1269. by

  1270. faith

  1271. in

  1272. the

  1273. work

  1274. of

  1275. Jesus

  1276. who

  1277. had

  1278. died

  1279. on

  1280. the

  1281. cross

  1282. for

  1283. him

  1284. and

  1285. who

  1286. had

  1287. been

  1288. raised

  1289. from

  1290. the

  1291. dead

  1292. he

  1293. found

  1294. justification

  1295. before

  1296. God

  1297. just

  1298. like

  1299. this

  1300. tax

  1301. collector

  1302. you

  1303. see

  1304. at

  1305. the

  1306. end

  1307. of

  1308. the

  1309. day

  1310. Jesus

  1311. is

  1312. not

  1313. saying

  1314. that

  1315. you

  1316. have

  1317. to

  1318. become

  1319. like

  1320. a

  1321. tax

  1322. collector

  1323. and

  1324. join

  1325. the

  1326. mafia

  1327. or

  1328. work

  1329. for

  1330. a

  1331. shady

  1332. business

  1333. or

  1334. do

  1335. all

  1336. kinds

  1337. of

  1338. crazy

  1339. things

  1340. or

  1341. go

  1342. to

  1343. jail

  1344. right

  1345. Jesus

  1346. is

  1347. not

  1348. saying

  1349. you

  1350. need

  1351. to

  1352. do

  1353. that

  1354. what

  1355. he's

  1356. saying

  1357. is

  1358. you

  1359. need

  1360. to

  1361. have

  1362. that

  1363. same

  1364. humility

  1365. that

  1366. that

  1367. tax

  1368. collector

  1369. showed

  1370. I

  1371. mean

  1372. isn't

  1373. it

  1374. amazing

  1375. that

  1376. Paul

  1377. the

  1378. Pharisee

  1379. right

  1380. Jesus

  1381. is

  1382. saying

  1383. the

  1384. tax

  1385. collector

  1386. went

  1387. home

  1388. justified

  1389. and

  1390. the

  1391. Pharisee

  1392. didn't

  1393. but

  1394. yet

  1395. Jesus

  1396. saved

  1397. Paul

  1398. the

  1399. Pharisee

  1400. man

  1401. who

  1402. was

  1403. good

  1404. in

  1405. all

  1406. kinds

  1407. of

  1408. ways

  1409. and

  1410. who

  1411. obeyed

  1412. the

  1413. law

  1414. and

  1415. yet

  1416. he

  1417. brought

  1418. him

  1419. to

  1420. his

  1421. knees

  1422. at

  1423. the

  1424. foot

  1425. of

  1426. the

  1427. cross

  1428. so

  1429. that's

  1430. the

  1431. point

  1432. of

  1433. this

  1434. parable

  1435. as

  1436. Jesus

  1437. says

  1438. in

  1439. the

  1440. end

  1441. everyone

  1442. who

  1443. exalts

  1444. himself

  1445. will

  1446. be

  1447. humbled

  1448. but

  1449. the

  1450. one

  1451. who

  1452. humbles

  1453. himself

  1454. will

  1455. be

  1456. exalted

  1457. let's

  1458. pray

  1459. Lord

  1460. Jesus

  1461. we

  1462. thank

  1463. you

  1464. for

  1465. this

  1466. parable

  1467. and

  1468. we

  1469. pray

  1470. that

  1471. you

  1472. would

  1473. help

  1474. us

  1475. by

  1476. your

  1477. Holy

  1478. Spirit

  1479. to

  1480. take

  1481. it

  1482. to

  1483. heart

  1484. as

  1485. a

  1486. word

  1487. of

  1488. warning

  1489. against

  1490. trusting

  1491. in

  1492. our

  1493. own

  1494. righteousness

  1495. and

  1496. treating

  1497. others

  1498. with

  1499. contempt

  1500. as

  1501. a

  1502. result

  1503. but

  1504. Lord

  1505. that

  1506. we

  1507. would

  1508. receive

  1509. it

  1510. also

  1511. as

  1512. a

  1513. word

  1514. of

  1515. hope

  1516. and

  1517. promise

  1518. Lord

  1519. this

  1520. is

  1521. what

  1522. you

  1523. came

  1524. to

  1525. do

  1526. you

  1527. came

  1528. to

  1529. lay

  1530. down

  1531. your

  1532. life

  1533. for

  1534. sinners

  1535. like

  1536. us

  1537. and

  1538. everyone

  1539. who

  1540. comes

  1541. to

  1542. you

  1543. can

  1544. know

  1545. that

  1546. forgiveness

  1547. that

  1548. the

  1549. tax

  1550. collector

  1551. knew

  1552. and

  1553. Lord

  1554. I pray

  1555. that

  1556. every

  1557. person

  1558. in this

  1559. place

  1560. would

  1561. not

  1562. leave

  1563. here

  1564. without

  1565. knowing

  1566. what the

  1567. tax collector

  1568. knew

  1569. being justified

  1570. before

  1571. God

  1572. Lord we

  1573. call out to you

  1574. have mercy on us

1575. and make us so that we do

1576. so that we're aware of our sin

1577. and so that we do all the good works that you've called us to do out of a fear of the Lord

  1578. more and more

1579. Lord not to promote ourselves not to

1580. bring our accomplishments before you but

1581. simply to say thank you for what you've done for us

1582. we pray this in your name

  1583. amen
