  1. Okay. A couple of pieces of business before we get started. First of all, it's hot. Second of all,

  2. there are ways to deal with that. One is if you're not sitting in a fan zone and you need a fan,

  3. get up, move to a place where you can feel the breeze of the fans in the sanctuary.

  4. Secondly, if you are dying of heat, there is cold water in pitchers downstairs as well as a water

  5. fountain in the back with cups. Go avail yourself. Don't feel like I'll be offended. I am telling you

  6. all this because my hope is that you will be able to pay attention and hang in there because we have

  7. a wonderful passage to look at this morning. And so if you need to go downstairs, it is slightly cooler

  8. down there. And there is a speaker down there. Please be respectful of one another who may be

  9. listening to the sermon while you're down there. So those are your options. And as I have an 87 point

  10. outline here for you, we're going to... No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding. We're going to look at the

  11. passage. We're going to be looking at 1 Corinthians, continuing our series, and we'll be looking at that

  12. in just a minute. I also want to just say on a personal note, it is good to be back. Thank you

  13. to the church for giving me a leave in the month of July. It was a good break. It was good to be with

  14. my kids and good to step away from some of the daily demands of life and ministry.

  15. It is interesting though because what I experienced during my leave has helped me think about what

  16. we're talking about this morning in 1 Corinthians. As I was on vacation with my family, my mom has

  17. developed some new health issues that are a little more significant than they have been. She's 80 years

  18. old as of January and is the most remarkably vibrant and active 80-year-old you would know. And so facing

  19. this is the first time when we've really had to wrestle through with her, how she's doing. And as

  20. we've had to face in a new way with the family, two of the great unchangeable realities of human

  21. existence, and that is that we are getting older and that one day we will die. It's not a very happy

  22. topic to talk about. In fact, we're not very good at it. One of my readings for this week was a book

  23. called Being Mortal. It is not written by a Christian. It is not from a Christian perspective,

  24. but it is a remarkable book talking about how much our society and our culture does not like to face

  25. or to talk about. And in fact is ill-equipped to face and to talk about the realities of aging and

  26. of death. As a matter of fact, I want to read to you a passage. He is a surgeon. He is the son of two

  27. doctors. And he realized as he entered into his practice how ill-equipped he and the medical system

  28. that had trained him was to actually help people face and walk through some of these issues.

  29. So he says, this is a book about the modern experience of mortality, about what it's like

  30. to be creatures who age and die, how medicine has changed the experience and how it hasn't,

  31. and where our ideas about how to deal with our finitude have got the reality wrong. As I pass a

  32. decade in surgical practice and become middle-aged myself, I find that neither I nor my patients find

  33. our current state tolerable, but I have also found it unclear what the answer should be,

  34. or even whether any adequate ones are possible. He's exposing what's a reality for us in our culture

  35. and often in our own lives, that we don't really know how to face the end of life.

  36. He goes on and talks about how the whole medical system right now is primarily trained to help fix

  37. things and make you better and prolong your life. And that's good and right. That's what they should do.

  38. But in doing so, it hasn't always equipped us as a society to think about how to face the end well.

  39. One more side note before I go on. I'm really thankful that in our congregation, we have some

  40. resources of people who know how to think about these things well. John Dunlop and Lydia Dugdale

  41. are both physicians who in different ways have been thinking through these things,

  42. not only from a human perspective, but especially as well from a Christian perspective.

  43. John's book, Finishing Well to the Glory of God, is worth your read. Whether you are 65 or whether

  44. you are 16, it is worth your read to think about what does it look like to face these things well.

  45. But the challenge is very real. Think about how in our culture things have changed. In 1945,

  46. most people in America died at home. According to the statistics in the book, 17% of people died at

  47. home in 1980. He said there's been a swing back since then a little bit. But think about how much

  48. that changes. How many of you have actually seen a dead body? How many of you have seen someone die,

  49. walked through that? Some of you have. Some of you haven't.

  50. But we live in a culture that wants to ignore it as much as possible.

  51. As probably many of you know, as I walked with my late wife Brandy through the last three and a half

  52. years of her life, we faced these questions. We faced the questions of how do you live knowing your

  53. probably going to die, but not know when? How much do you focus on living for today and making the most of it?

  54. How much do you prepare for what's coming ahead? How do you face the end? How do you navigate the

  55. feelings of hopelessness and of hope that swirl in your heart? How do you walk through those things?

  56. We weren't particularly prepared for that. It wasn't on our plan when we got married to be facing what we did.

  57. We were unaccustomed to the process, unfamiliar with the questions, ignorant of the patterns, and we were unprepared.

  58. Now, I'm sure some of you have walked through this process already with someone you love.

  59. Maybe some of you are facing this process yourself. You're feeling the aging and thinking through,

  60. how do I walk through this well? Some of you may not be there yet. Maybe you haven't walked through it,

  61. but you're starting to see that it's more downhill than uphill from here in your life.

  62. Some of you, my guess is, have never thought about it at all.

  63. That was true of me for many, many years. Until my dad passed away, it didn't even cross my mind.

  64. Even when some of my really good friends had loved ones die, I didn't have any clue.

  65. How do we face aging and dying and death?

  66. What do we do with that?

  67. Well, friends, that's what our passage this morning speaks to, I believe.

  68. And it gives us a mind-blowing picture of what God has done for us

  69. and how we, who know Christ, can respond to these questions.

  70. And so, in light of that, we're going to look at 1 Corinthians 15, verses 50 through 58.

    1 Corinthians 15:50–58

  71. If you want to turn there in your pew Bible, what's the page? I forgot.

  72. 9.62. Page 9.62.

  73. We're going to read this together, and then I will pray, and then we will continue.

  95. Let's pray together.

  96. Lord what sweet and precious words

  97. These are that speak to our hope

  98. And Lord lay for us

  99. Channel markers

  100. Lord through the dizzying currents

  101. And the bewildering winds of

  102. Death and dying

  103. Lord thank you for these channel markers

  104. These points of reference

  105. That can lead us through well

  106. Lord I pray this morning you would give us

  107. Your grace to hear your word

  108. Lord to know the hope

  109. That you have given us in Christ

  110. Lord I pray for those who are here this morning

  111. Who are exploring Christianity

  112. Lord that they would hear

  113. Lord of the great hope

  114. That is for all

  115. Who are joined with Christ

  116. In resurrection and eternity

  117. Lord I pray

  118. That you would help us in this heat

  119. To sustain and endure

  120. Lord I pray you would give us ears to hear

  121. What you have to speak to us this morning

  122. By your spirit

  123. Through your word

  124. We pray in Jesus name

  125. Amen

  126. As we come to this passage this morning

  127. I want to remind you of the context

  128. Paul has been writing to the Corinthians

  129. And in the church in Corinth

  130. And in chapter 15

  131. He has come back to

  132. After 14 chapters

  133. Of a lot of ethical instruction

  134. This is how you ought to live

  135. This is how you ought to be

  136. He comes back and he reminds them

  137. He says now I want to remind you

  138. Of what is of first importance

  139. This is the very core

  140. Of the Christian message

  141. This is the very core of the gospel

  142. That Jesus Christ

  143. Died for your sins

  144. And was raised from the dead

  145. He wants us to have that central

  146. It is

  147. Christianity is not about

  148. Being a good person

  149. Christianity is not about

  150. About performing well in the world

  151. It's not about improving our society

  152. It's not about all of those things

  153. In fact it's not about us

  154. First and foremost at all

  155. It's about what God has done

  156. For us in Jesus Christ

  157. That he has come

  158. And by his death

  159. And by his resurrection

  160. He has wrought a work

  161. In the world

  162. A work of redemption

  163. That changes everything

  164. He then goes on

  165. In verses 12 through 34

  166. To address a question

  167. That seemed to be swirling

  168. In the Corinthian context

  169. Which is

  170. But I don't think

  171. That the resurrection

  172. That doesn't make any sense to me

  173. And maybe you understand that

  174. Because in our scientific world

  175. People who die are dead

  176. That's very sort of

  177. Tautological right?

  178. People who die are dead

  179. That's all they do

  180. And this idea of resurrection

  181. Seems very odd to us

  182. And so he attacks this idea

  183. And he says

  184. No, we who are Christians

  185. Must believe

  186. That there is a resurrection

  187. From the dead

  188. Because Christ

  189. Has been raised from the dead

  190. And there is good evidence

  191. Historically

  192. To know that that is true

  193. There is good effect

  194. To remember that

  195. That resurrection

  196. Changes everything

  197. Then he goes on

  198. In verses 35

  199. Through the end of the chapter

  200. Which is the last

  201. We're reading the last part today

  202. And he shifts from the question

  203. Of can there be a resurrection

  204. Or not

  205. To what kind of resurrection body

  206. Would it

  207. Is it going to look like?

  208. What does that really look like?

  209. We're unfamiliar with this idea

  210. Of a resurrected person

  211. So what does it really look like

  212. To be raised from the dead?

  213. And let me just say

  214. My brothers who have preached

  215. On this for the last four weeks

  216. Have done a wonderful job

  217. And if you have missed out

  218. On the last four weeks

  219. Please

  220. Go to our website

  221. Sign up for the podcast

  222. Download the messages

  223. Listen to them

  224. There is much

  225. That I will not get to say

  226. About Jesus Christ

  227. And his resurrection today

  228. Because they've already said it

  229. With much more eloquence

  230. Than I can summarize

  231. So go back and read those

  232. Or listen to those

  233. And be blessed by them

  234. But at the core of it

  235. This section

  236. How Paul responds to that is

  237. Oh what will the resurrection body

  238. Look like?

  239. Well

  240. It will look like

  241. Something more glorious

  242. More fitting

  243. More right

  244. More heavenly

  245. More ideal

  246. Than you could ever imagine

  247. Nick used the analogy

  248. Last week of

  249. If you look at an acorn

  250. And think of what

  251. A beautiful oak tree is like

  252. We in our mortal bodies

  253. Right now

  254. Are that ugly little acorn

  255. And what is coming to us

  256. Is this picture

  257. Of abundant beauty

  258. And glory

  259. Beyond what we could imagine

  260. And that leads us

  261. To our passage this morning

  262. And in our passage this morning

  263. Paul gives us two more

  264. Key perspectives

  265. About the resurrection

  266. And what it means

  267. For us today

  268. How Christ's resurrection

  269. And his victory over death

  270. Means that we too

  271. Can face death

  272. And live life

  273. With certainty

  274. And with hope

  275. So we're going to break it down

  276. We're going to look at three sections

  277. The first one is

  278. The hope of a coming transformation

  279. The second one is

  280. The present reality

  281. Of Christ's victory

  282. And the third is

  283. The exhortation

  284. To draw on that strength

  285. To live lives now

  286. In light of the future resurrection

  287. So that's what we're going to look at

  288. This morning

  289. First one

  290. Verses 50 through 53

  291. Excuse me

  292. He starts out by saying this

  293. I tell you this brothers

  294. Flesh and blood cannot inherit

  295. The kingdom of God

  296. Nor does the perishable

  297. Inherit the imperishable

  298. The Corinthians

  299. It seems like we're thinking

  300. This

  301. This flesh

  302. This ugliness

  303. With all of its warts

  304. And

  305. And

  306. And

  307. And extra pounds

  308. And

  309. And all the other things

  310. That I have

  311. And

  312. And the

  313. The ugly elbows

  314. And my misshaped nose

  315. This thing

  316. This mortal body

  317. This thing that's decaying

  318. How can this

  319. Be a part of eternity

  320. How can this

  321. Be a part of God

  322. And his kingdom

  323. How is it possible

  324. That that is true

  325. Imagining that is like saying

  326. A two year old

  327. Is able to fly

  328. An F-16

  329. Or a cricket

  330. Should be able to pull

  331. The queen's carriage

  332. Through the streets of London

  333. It just doesn't make sense

  334. It doesn't fit

  335. This mortal body

  336. Isn't fit

  337. For the future

  338. That is to come

  339. And Paul says

  340. Oh no

  341. Oh no friends

  342. Your imagination

  343. Is too small

  344. This mortal body

  345. You were right

  346. This mortal body

  347. Cannot inherit

  348. Those things

  349. But this mortal body

  350. Isn't going to inherit

  351. Those things

  352. Because God

  353. Is going to do something

  354. In us

  355. In the resurrection

  356. That is wonderful

  357. Look with me

  358. Verses 52-53

  359. Or 51-52

  360. Behold I tell you

  361. A mystery

  362. And a mystery

  363. Isn't some esoteric thing

  364. It's simply something

  365. That wasn't known before

  366. But now

  367. In light of the resurrection

  368. Of Christ

  369. Is now known

  370. And revealed to us

  371. I tell you a mystery

  372. We will not all sleep

  373. Which is a metaphor

  374. For dying

  375. But we will all

  376. Be changed

  377. In a moment

  378. In a twinkling

  379. Of an eye

  380. At the last trumpet

  381. For the trumpet

  382. Will sound

  383. And the dead

  384. Will be raised

  385. Imperishable

  386. And we shall

  387. Be changed

  388. This is the great hope

  389. That he's pointing us to

  390. Yes of course

  391. This mortal body

  392. Won't go to heaven

  393. But what God

  394. Has done for us

  395. In Christ

  396. Means that

  397. For all who are in him

  398. Who are joined

  399. With Christ in faith

  400. There is a day

  401. That is coming

  402. In the future

  403. Where this will be

  404. Transformed

  405. Where this flesh

  406. In blood

  407. Will be transformed

  408. Not into a spirit

  409. That doesn't have

  410. A body

  411. And not into a zombie

  412. Or a walking dead

  413. Or some other

  414. Modern conception

  415. Of what it might be

  416. To come back

  417. From the dead

  418. Friends

  419. The greatest sense

  420. We have

  421. Of what that

  422. Imperishable

  423. And immortal

  424. Body

  425. Might look like

  426. Is from the

  427. Accounts in the

  428. Gospels

  429. Where we see

  430. Jesus

  431. Risen from the

  432. Dead

  433. And he's real

  434. And he's physical

  435. And he eats bread

  436. And he touches people

  437. And they can touch him

  438. And he speaks

  439. And yet

  440. There are things

  441. In the gospel

  442. Account

  443. That don't make sense

  444. He seems to be able

  445. To go through walls

  446. He seems to be able

  447. To suddenly appear

  448. And disappear

  449. And you know what

  450. Friends

  451. I have no idea

  452. How to put all that

  453. Together

  454. I'll be honest

  455. With you

  456. I don't know

  457. What this body

  458. Is going to look like

  459. But it will be

  460. Imperishable

  461. And it will be

  462. Immortal

  463. And all the things

  464. That we think

  465. About our bodies

  466. Now

  467. We don't realize

  468. How deeply

  469. We have

  470. Presumed on that

  471. It will all be

  472. Changed

  473. And we will be

  474. Fit

  475. For heaven

  476. And it's not

  477. A process

  478. It's not an

  479. Organic

  480. Or developmental

  481. Thing where we

  482. Suddenly move

  483. Slowly from this

  484. Mortality

  485. To an immortality

  486. Did you see

  487. How Paul describes it

  488. It's going to happen

  489. In a moment

  490. In a twinkling

  491. Of an eye

  492. At the last trumpet

  493. And the trumpet

  494. Is picturing

  495. Christ's triumphant

  496. Return

  497. Where he comes

  498. Back to the earth

  499. To establish

  500. His reign fully

  501. And it is not

  502. Going to be

  503. A process

  504. It will be

  505. Instantaneous

  506. He will come

  507. And we will

  508. Be transformed

  509. Into something

  510. That we've never

  511. Seen before

  512. And can only

  513. Begin to

  514. Imagine

  515. Friends

  516. This is better

  517. Than prolonging

  518. This life

  519. This is better

  520. Than simply

  521. Seeking to get

  522. The most

  523. We can

  524. Out of this

  525. Mortal body

  526. And then

  527. Dying

  528. Like the

  529. Existentialists

  530. Say

  531. This is better

  532. Than fluffy

  533. Clouds

  534. And cherubim

  535. On hearts

  536. What we have

  537. Waiting for us

  538. In this

  539. Immortal

  540. And imperishable

  541. Body

  542. Is going to be

  543. An existence

  544. That will be

  545. More glorious

  546. Than you could

  547. Ever

  548. Imagine

  549. We will be

  550. Fit

  551. For God's

  552. Kingdom

  553. We will be

  554. Fit

  555. For His

  556. Presence

  557. There will be

  558. No shame

  559. There will be

  560. No guilt

  561. There will be

  562. No weakness

  563. There will be

  564. No getting

  565. Old

  566. And no getting

  567. Tired

  568. But we will

  569. Live

  570. With Him

  571. Forever

  572. In the

  573. Richness

  574. Of His

  575. Presence

  576. And His

  577. Glory

  578. And we

  579. Will be

  580. Fit for

  581. That

  582. Because of

  583. The resurrection

  584. From the

  585. Dead

  586. You know

  587. It's

  588. Helpful

  589. To think

  590. About this

  591. I don't know

  592. If you've

  593. Thought about

  594. This

  595. And I've

  596. Shared this

  597. I think

  598. Before

  599. But you

  600. Know

  601. One of

  602. Things

  603. That's

  604. Reality

  605. Is

  606. That

  607. Good

  608. Theology

  609. Is really

  610. Helpful

  611. And in

  612. This

  613. Light

  614. Good

  615. Theology

  616. Has been

  617. Particularly

  618. Really

  619. Helpful

  620. For my

  621. Kids

  622. After

  623. Brandy

  624. Died

  625. I brought

  626. Them

  627. Out to

  628. The hospice

  629. To see

  630. Her

  631. Because I

  632. Wanted them

  633. To see

  634. The body

  635. That was

  636. Left behind

  637. I wanted

  638. Them to

  639. See that

  640. Her spirit

  641. Was no

  642. Longer

  643. There

  644. I wanted

  645. Them to

  646. See

  647. Death

  648. But I

  649. Wanted them

  650. To see

  651. That in

  652. Light of

  653. All the

  654. Things that

  655. We had

  656. Talked

  657. About

  658. With

  659. Them

  660. Over

  661. The

  662. Years

  663. Leading

  664. Up

  665. To

  666. That

  672. About

  685. That

  686. That

  687. That body

  688. Though

  689. It

  690. Failed

  691. Will

  692. Be

  693. Raised

  694. One

  697. It

  698. Will

  699. Be

  700. Glorious

  701. That

  703. That

  756. Our

  761. As

  762. We

  764. These

  766. Paul

  767. Goes

  769. And

  770. He

  774. Is

  775. It

  776. True

  777. That

  778. As

  779. We

  780. Are

  810. We

  814. A

  815. Victory

  816. Over

  817. The

  819. Enemies

  820. Of

  821. Humanity

  822. Paul

  826. 26

  827. Of

  828. Chapter

  836. Enemy

  837. I

  838. Don't

  839. Know

  840. If

  841. You

  842. Have

  843. Thought

  844. About

  845. It

  846. But

  847. How

  848. Much

  849. Of

  850. Our

  851. Life

  852. Is

  853. Driven

  854. By

  855. The

  856. Fact

  857. That

  858. We

  859. Are

  860. Only

  861. Here

  862. For

  863. A

  864. Little

  865. Period

  866. Of

  867. Time

  868. How

  869. Much

  870. Of

  871. Our

  872. Life

  873. Is

  874. Shaped

  875. By

  876. The

  877. Fact

  878. That

  879. We

  880. We're

  881. Going

  882. To

  883. Put

  884. On

  885. These

  886. Things

  887. And

  888. He

  889. Says

  890. But

  891. When

  892. We

  893. Put

  894. Them

  895. On

  896. Then

  897. It

  898. Shall

  899. Come

  900. To

  901. Pass

  902. What

  903. Was

  904. Said

  905. Death

  906. Is

  907. Swallowed

  908. Up

  909. In

  910. Victory

  911. And

  912. He's

  913. Quoting

  914. From

  915. Isaiah

  916. 25

  917. And

  918. It's

  919. A

  920. And

  921. So

  922. And

  923. He's

  924. Saying

  925. Of

  926. And

  927. And

  928. And

  929. So

  930. Being

  931. Swallowed

  932. Up

  933. Like

  934. A

  935. Little

  936. Shadow

  937. Is

  938. Swallowed

  939. Up

  940. By

  941. The

  942. Brilliance

  943. Of

  944. A

  945. Bright

  946. Sun

  947. As

  948. It

  949. Breaks

  950. Over

  951. The

  952. Horizon

  953. So

  954. Too

  955. Death

  956. Will

  957. Be

  958. Swallowed

  959. Up

  960. By

  961. The

  962. resurrection of Christ on that day. In fact, Paul is so confident and so joyful about this

  963. that in the next verse, he actually turns to a taunt. This is how we ought to read verse 55.

  964. Death, where is your victory? Come on, I don't see it. Where is it? Jesus rose from the dead.

  965. I don't see it. He's taunting death. It's fascinating. What he does actually is,

  966. he's quoting from Hosea 13, and in Hosea 13, it's actually a summons. It's in the context of a

  967. judgment against one of the nations that's been oppressing God's people, and it's a call for death

  968. to come and exert its sting and exert its power on those people because they have been disobedient

  969. to the Lord. And so Paul is acknowledging that humanity has always seen that death has had a

  970. sting and has had a power over humanity. But he now, rather than quoting that and inviting that,

  971. he is now taunting that power. He's saying, death, we thought you had that, but you don't.

  972. You don't have that power anymore. The sting of death is gone

  973. because death has been swallowed up in victory.

  974. And then in typical Pauline writing in verse 56, he takes a little excursus into his great theology of

  975. salvation, right? Because as we understand from the scriptures, death has come from sin. Sin entered

  976. the world, and because of sin. Death. The first man, Adam, sinned, and so we all inherited that sin,

  977. and because of that sin, we all experience death, and there is no escaping that

  978. until Jesus rose from the dead and death was defeated. And it talks about how Jesus defeated that.

  979. This, he talks about how the power of sin is the law, because what the law does, that is the regulations

  980. about how we ought to live in light of God. Simply demonstrate for us that we can't do it. That's

  981. what the law does for all of humanity. It says, you will never be good enough to make it to God on your

  982. own. You will never be able to put on imperishability by being a better person in this world. You will

  983. never be able to put on immortality by trying harder or doing great things in this world.

  984. The hope that you have is that there is one who has done these things for you. Jesus Christ came, and

  985. he lived a perfect life that fulfilled the law in every way. And then he offered himself up, not needing

  986. to die for his own sins. He offered himself in our place, taking the penalty of sin, which is death,

  987. upon himself, and therefore satisfying the requirements of the law. And so suddenly we see

  988. that Jesus has swallowed up death in victory when he rose from the grave.

  989. Friends, join with Paul and with me in verse 37. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God who gives us the

  990. victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the great hope, not just that Jesus has risen from the

  991. dead, but for all who have put their faith in him, who are trusting in him for their salvation.

  992. We gain that victory too. We will be with him. We will be raised up with him to this newness of life

  993. and this eternal life that will be greater than all.

  994. Some of you are familiar with John Dunn's great poem, Death Be Not Proud.

  995. I almost brought it to quote to you, but it's a little tricky to work through. And I thought I'd save us some of the

  996. 400-year-old English. But I did find

  997. an updated version where someone, a contemporary songwriter, has turned it into

  998. a song that I think, and the lyrics capture what John Dunn is saying, but with a little more modern English.

  999. So let me read her version of it to you. This is the taunt, this is the attitude of those who get the victory

1000. in Christ. Death be not proud, though the whole world fear you. Mighty and dreadful you may seem,

1001. but death be not proud, for your pride has failed you. You will not kill me,

1002. though you may dwell in plague and poison. You're a slave to fate and desperate men.

1003. So death, if your sleep be the gates to heaven, why your confidence?

1004. Friends, it is so hard for us to wrap our mind around this truth that death will one day no longer

1005. shape our lives. Death will one day no longer be the end point which defines everything that we do.

1006. But when we are raised with Christ, who has won the victory over death,

1007. friends, there is nothing left but praise to God and taunting that old enemy that we were so afraid of

1008. once, but not anymore. Finally, having put forth to us that we will be transformed as we are caught up

1009. with him. He who has won the victory so that we no longer need to fear death but can be filled with

1010. thanksgiving. Paul then says, therefore, how do we live? Therefore, be steadfast, immovable,

1011. always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

1012. He says, because we know these things about death, we can face it honestly. And how do we live in the

1013. meantime? How do we live in light of that? Two things. One, be like the rock of Gibraltar. Don't

1014. be like a beach ball on the edge of the shore that is pushed by every wave of fear about death. Don't allow

1015. yourself to be pushed around by our culture that tries to ignore death, by our culture that tries

1016. to minimize death, by our culture that tries to give platitudes to make us feel better without

1017. actually addressing it. But recognize that in the gospel, in the resurrected Christ, you can be a rock of

1018. Gibraltar where the waves of death. Be steadfast and immovable in light of death. Don't let it rule you

1019. and don't let it fear you. But instead, do what? Always abound in the work of the Lord. Rather than

1020. the prospect of death causing you to go into your shell and simply shrivel up and succumb to it.

1021. He says, no. Face the reality of your death and then go and abound in the work of the Lord. What does

1022. he mean by the work of the Lord? I think it could be many things. It could be simply what he started the

1023. chapter with, which is his own ministry of proclaiming the very core of the gospel. Certainly, this is a

1024. work of the Lord that we would share this hope with others. That we would not have to be confused and

1025. without hope in the face of death, but that we would have these anchor points that can help us navigate

1026. even the greatest questions of life. But you know, I also think that Paul wrote this at the end of his

1027. book, this letter to this church, to say, this is what's going to fuel all the other things.

1028. When I told you to embrace humility and weakness and brokenness in your leaders and not pride and

1029. arrogance and a dismissive and self-exalting attitude. When I told you to think about how you

1030. control your bodies, in the way you live out your sex life for the glory of God, how you manage yourself

1031. and your relationships with one another in the church, how you navigate your culture and the questions

1032. of idolatry and your freedoms, and how you are called to love one another well, how you worship, and how you

1033. exercise your spiritual gifts. These are all, in Paul's mind, the abundance of doing works for the Lord.

1034. As we follow his instructions and all that we've been teaching on in 1 Corinthians,

1035. Paul says, abound in these things

1036. because there is a future and there is a hope that we have.

  1037. I don't need to exalt myself and be self-promoting and self-exalting

1038. because one day I will be changed into imperishability and I will be in glory with him.

1039. I don't need to do that now because he will do that for me.

1040. I don't want to use my body to live in patterns of sin that lead to death

1041. when I have been saved for a life that will be eternal and more satisfying and more glorious

1042. than the greatest of physical pleasure in this world.

1043. I don't want to use my freedom to try to give my life meaning in this era, in this age,

1044. but I want to lay it down as a servant for others because I know that one day I will have the

1045. greatest freedom of all, freedom from sin and freedom from death. All this because Christ has won

1046. the victory. And he finished it saying, abound in these things because you know that your labor in

1047. the Lord is not in vain. Friends, recognize that the resurrection of Christ is the most important

1048. thing that has ever happened in the world. It is the turning point of all history. It is the centerpiece

1049. of all Christian theology. It is the thing that gives us hope and makes our life not vain,

1050. not empty, not fruitless. We may or may not see the fruit of our labor. We may or may not see the

1051. good results of our attempts to follow God's instructions on how we ought to live.

1052. But friends, we will not live in vain in Christ because we will not die, but we will be raised with

1053. him imperishable and immortal. And what a great hope this is. You know, last week as I was sitting in

1054. the pew listening to Nick preach on this glorious hope of what our bodies will look like, I actually

1055. had a picture in my mind. I had a picture of Brandy, how she might be sipping the best cup of tea that

1056. she's ever had. How her body and her life are renewed. And like a seed that turns into the lushness of a

1057. garden. All, all of the beautiful things that she was in this world and all the best of who she was

1058. to us, to us, and all the weakness and all the suffering and all the pain that she endured,

1059. those things are like a little seed that have now burst in glory for her.

1060. And I think, I want to hold on to that hope for her because it means I don't despair for her.

1061. For me. Because it means I don't want to give up. And for you. Because I pray that you too will pray

1062. that God will help you to see what God has prepared beforehand for you. No eye has seen,

1063. no ear has heard, and no mind has ever imagined what God has prepared for those who love him

1064. are called according to his purpose. What a great hope we have in Christ. Let's pray.

1065. Lord, thank you for this hope. Thank you that Jesus is risen from the dead.

1066. Lord, we pray that you would help us to come awake.

1067. And Lord, to live in light of this great hope.

1068. Lord, we pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen.

1069. Amen. We're going to close our time together by singing a great hymn. I don't know if you've noticed,

1070. but all of our songs this morning have touched on and brought forth the centrality of the resurrection

1071. of the dead and the hope that it brings. So, we will sing. You'll hear the echoes.

  1072. Thank you.
