  1. All right, well, friends, imagine one day you come home and waiting for you at your door is a package.

  2. It's a gift from a friend, you notice, on the mailing label, and it's a big box.

  3. So you drag it inside, and you open up this big box, and out come the pieces of a brand new bicycle.

  4. Plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop.

  5. And you can tell it's a pretty nice bike, right?

  6. It's got this ultralight titanium frame.

  7. It's got these slick wheels.

  8. It's top of the line.

  9. But as you kind of sort through the pieces of this incredible surprise gift that your thoughtful friend sent you, you realize that something's missing.

  10. There are no instructions on how to put the thing together.

  11. You know that this bike is supposed to be state-of-the-art.

  12. You can practically feel the wind whipping through your hair as you look at the pieces on the floor.

  13. But you have no idea how it all fits together.

  14. Or imagine you've been given an even greater gift.

  15. Imagine that some forgotten distant relative dies and leaves you an inheritance.

  16. And it's a piece of lakefront property.

  17. And not just a piece of property, but on that property are all the materials to build a vacation home.

  18. Apparently, they were hoping to build this home but couldn't complete the project.

  19. And so you head out to your newly inherited piece of property, and you see there all the materials stacked and stored and covered.

  20. But lo and behold, as you look through everything, there's no blueprint.

  21. There's nothing that tells you how this gift is meant to be put together.

  22. There's nothing that tells you how it's meant to be built.

  23. Now, why do I start with this illustration?

  24. Because spiritually, Christianity is about receiving a surpassingly great gift.

  25. About receiving the gift of what we call salvation in Christ.

  26. But you know, we live in a world where there are competing frameworks and competing worldviews and competing pictures of the good life.

  27. There are lots of options out there for you if you're out to construct the good life.

  28. So it's not as if we've just sort of lost the instructions, but there are lots of instructions that fall out of the box.

  29. And we're not really sure which one to pick.

  30. And it seems that what we need, as those who have received this incredible gift of salvation in Christ,

  31. what we need is something like a blueprint.

  32. Something like a blueprint for how this gift is meant to be put together.

  33. For how its pieces all connect.

  34. For what it looks like and what it feels like when it gets lived out.

  35. And not just individually, but in our life together as the church.

  36. And the book that we're going to be studying this fall, we're starting a new sermon series tonight.

  37. The book that we're going to be studying this fall and actually on into the winter and into the spring.

  38. The book of Ephesians is actually just that.

  39. The book of Ephesians is something like a spiritual blueprint.

  40. So if you want to understand what the core of Christianity is all about.

  41. If you want to see how a lot of its pieces fit together.

  42. If you want to know how to build your life in light of what Christianity is all about.

  43. If you're curious just what Christianity is and what it does.

  44. Then Ephesians is a great book to study.

  45. And that's what we're starting today.

  46. So if you haven't done so already, turn with me to the book of Ephesians.

  47. That's page 976 in the Black Pew Bibles there.

  48. Page 976, the book of Ephesians.

  49. Now as you turn there, you'll see right off that the letter of Ephesians, the book of Ephesians is a letter of Paul the Apostle.

  50. And if you kind of scan over it quickly, if you just flip the page, you see that it's pretty short.

  51. It's just six chapters.

  52. It's something you could probably read in one sitting.

  53. If you had a good stiff cup of coffee and you were awake, you could probably just plow right through it.

  54. But tonight we're just going to look at the opening couple of verses.

  55. You'll see in the sermon card, the little blue card in your pew that we're going to kind of walk through.

  56. You'll see how we'll break it down in the coming weeks if you want to sort of follow along week by week.

  57. But tonight we're just going to look at Paul's opening verses.

  58. His greeting in verses 1 and 2.

  59. So let me read this for us.

  60. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God.

  61. To the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus.

  62. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  63. Well, let's pray together as we consider this passage.

  64. Father, we do pray for just that, your grace and your peace as we come to your word now.

  65. Lord, many of us here have been students of the scriptures for some time.

  66. Lord, some of us perhaps are completely new.

  67. But God, we thank you that because you're a living and active and real God, you can meet us and teach us and show us wonderful things.

  68. And what you've given us here in the Bible.

  69. So we pray that tonight that you'd help us to understand.

  70. And in understanding to know you, God, and in knowing you to be really changed in our relationship with you.

  71. And we ask this in Jesus' name.

  72. Amen.

  73. Okay.

  74. Well, okay.

  75. This opening is roughly how all of Paul's letters begin, if you were to scan through.

  76. And this is actually how most ancient letters in general began.

  77. From so-and-so to so-and-so and then some kind of blessing, right?

  78. But you know, the more that you study Paul's letters in particular, the more you realize that Paul packs into his opening lines often some of the main concerns or the main themes of what he's going to say in the rest of the letter.

  79. And in just a minute, we're going to spend, you know, the bulk of our time tonight looking just at how Paul does that here in these opening verses to get a sense of what the book of Ephesians is all about.

  80. But before we do that, you know, it's worth pointing out that if we were to go ahead and we were to sort of read the rest of the letter, we would actually notice something a bit peculiar about the book of Ephesians.

  81. The first thing that we would notice that's a bit peculiar is that this letter does not seem to be addressing a particular need or a particular crisis in this particular church.

  82. Now, if you've read some of the other in the New Testament, think about some of Paul's other letters.

  83. In Galatians, he's battling some false teachers.

  84. In Philippians, he's responding to a generous gift that the church has sent him, who are partners with him in ministry.

  85. In 1 and 2 Thessalonians, he's answering some questions about the Lord's return.

  86. In 1 and 2 Corinthians, he's dealing with all sorts of issues and problems.

  87. If you want a little snapshot into that, you can check out the podcast from our morning service over the last year.

  88. We looked at 1 Corinthians and all of the crises and issues that Paul dealt with there.

  89. But what's very interesting is that here in Ephesians, there doesn't seem to be a crisis.

  90. There doesn't seem to be a pressing need that he has to address.

  91. Rather, it seems that the content of this book is...

  92. Well, I hesitate to say it's general because general sounds really boring, right?

  93. And Ephesians is anything but boring.

  94. Rather, the content of Ephesians is...

  95. I mean, how are we going to put it?

  96. It's universal.

  97. It's like the core of everything.

  98. In fact, if you're a student of Paul's letters, you notice that Ephesians is very carefully constructed.

  99. It's sort of written in beautifully wrought language.

  100. It doesn't feel like something that's polemical that Paul's just ripping off to meet a need.

  101. No, it seems like he's taken his time to construct this thing.

  102. It feels sort of like a beautiful blueprint.

  103. And the second thing you notice if you read through the rest of the book that's kind of peculiar...

  104. ...is that Paul doesn't seem to let on that he has any intimate knowledge of the church in Ephesus.

  105. He makes very little mention here of his relationship with them.

  106. And again, that's very unlike many of Paul's letters.

  107. Often, Paul is addressing particular people by particular names throughout his letter.

  108. I plead with Euodia and Syntyche to agree in the Lord.

  109. That's Philippians.

  110. I mean, that's pretty direct, right?

  111. That shows a pretty intimate knowledge of the people in the congregation.

  112. And it's particularly surprising here in Ephesus that he doesn't make any kind of personal mention

  113. because we know from the book of Acts, chapter 19, that Paul actually spent literally years

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  114. ministering in Ephesus before he wrote this letter.

  115. He had an ongoing, long-term relationship with this church.

  116. And yet, you would read this letter and it feels like it could be written to anyone.

  117. Third peculiar thing about this book.

  118. And it's actually found in the second half of verse 1.

  119. Look back at the second half of verse 1.

  120. We read there,

  121. To the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus.

  122. Now, notice, there's a little number 1, superscript 1, next to faithful there in our text of the ESV.

  123. Do you see that?

  124. That's telling you to look down in the footnote.

  125. And if you look down in the footnote, you read there that in some of the New Testament manuscripts

  126. that we have of this book, the words in Ephesus are omitted.

  127. They're not there.

  128. And in fact, it's that way in some of the oldest manuscripts that we have.

  129. Okay, well, what does that mean?

  130. Well, I think as we put all these peculiar pieces together,

  131. and many New Testament scholars have come to the same conclusion,

  132. it seems pretty likely that this book of Ephesians originated as something like a circular letter.

  133. Something that Paul composed not just for one church, but for many churches.

  134. And that's why there isn't just one name there.

  135. That there are copies that exist without a city name,

  136. because they could be sent to any city.

  137. Now, if that's true, if Ephesians is some sort of circular letter that Paul wrote

  138. to be distributed broadly among the cities, that's a really cool idea.

  139. And here's why.

  140. Because if that's true, then what we have in the book of Ephesians

  141. is the Apostle Paul, one of the greatest minds of the early church,

  142. trying to distill the essence of his message,

  143. trying to get to the heart of Christianity,

  144. trying to get down to the bare bones of the gospel,

  145. and fit it into a power-packed letter,

  146. this short, explosive letter that churches all over could benefit from.

  147. In other words, he's writing a blueprint,

  148. not just for the church in Ephesus, but for all of us.

  149. To the saints who are in New Haven,

  150. and are faithful in Christ Jesus.

  151. So let's take a few minutes then,

  152. and see how these opening verses highlight some of the important themes

  153. that we're going to see in the rest of the letter,

  154. this letter that was meant not just for Ephesus, but for all of us.

  155. First, our blueprint for Christian life and doctrine in the book of Ephesus

  156. opens with the will of God.

  157. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus,

  158. by the will of God.

  159. Over and over and over in this book,

  160. we're going to learn about God's purpose,

  161. God's plan,

  162. God's will.

  163. In other words, what God desires,

  164. what God brings about.

  165. Ephesians is going to take us from eternity past,

  166. before the foundation of the world,

  167. on through the present,

  168. and into eternity to come.

  169. And along the way,

  170. Paul is going to show us what God's heart is.

  171. What the one true creator,

  172. God's unfailing purpose is.

  173. His sovereign plan.

  174. His fatherly will.

  175. And what we're going to see is that God's purpose,

  176. his plan,

  177. his will,

  178. is not some cold,

  179. abstract,

  180. distant thing.

  181. That it's not just the decree

  182. of some far-off deity.

  183. But it's the burning desire of God

  184. to express his glorious grace

  185. in the redemption of his lost children.

  186. Think about Paul.

  187. As a young man,

  188. who was Paul?

  189. If we were to read a news article about Paul,

  190. the young man,

  191. do you know what we would call him?

  192. We'd probably call him a terrorist.

  193. He was a murderer,

  194. a religious zealot,

  195. whatever you want to use,

  196. whatever words.

  197. He hated Christ,

  198. and he hated Christians,

  199. and yet,

  200. what we read here in verse one

  201. is that the will of God,

  202. the purpose,

  203. the plan of God,

  204. intervened.

  205. And the persecutor of Christ

  206. was transformed in the proclaimer of Christ.

  207. The persecutor of Christians

  208. became the pastor of Christians.

  209. Friend, I wonder,

  210. do you think it's possible

  211. for people to change?

  212. Or will we always be stuck

  213. in the same old ruts,

  214. in the same old bad habits,

  215. in the same old spiritual deadness?

  216. And not just personally,

  217. how about our city?

  218. Do you think that things can change

  219. in New Haven

  220. or whatever neighborhood you live in?

  221. Do you think that we could see

  222. our city become a place

  223. where God's name is honored

  224. and loved and praised,

  225. and people are freed

  226. from the darkness

  227. and selfishness

  228. and sin

  229. and self-destruction

  230. that we're trapped in?

  231. It's easy to lose hope,

  232. isn't it?

  233. It's easy to think

  234. that we'll never see renewal

  235. or change,

  236. either personally

  237. or communally.

  238. And you know,

  239. in ourselves,

  240. in our own strength,

  241. in our own will,

  242. it is impossible.

  243. But not for God's will.

  244. What we're going to see

  245. in our journey

  246. through this book

  247. is that God takes

  248. the things that are dead.

  249. Not just weak,

  250. not just faltering,

  251. not just in need of help,

  252. but the things that are dead

  253. and makes them alive.

  254. And God takes the things

  255. that are far off,

  256. that are strangers,

  257. that feel like they're lost

  258. and gone forever,

  259. and he brings them home.

  260. God's will.

  261. I hope you want to learn more

  262. about God's purpose

  263. and God's plan

  264. and God's will

  265. because,

  266. whether you like it or not,

  267. it's coming in this book.

  268. But friends,

  269. it's awesome.

  270. And you want to see it.

  271. But let's keep moving.

  272. In the rest of verse 1,

  273. this blueprint speaks

  274. not just about God's will,

  275. but it speaks about

  276. our identity.

  277. To the saints

  278. who are in Ephesus,

  279. who are faithful

  280. in Christ Jesus,

  281. Paul writes.

  282. Notice here

  283. that we're called saints.

  284. And in the New Testament,

  285. that word doesn't mean

  286. the extra holy

  287. and righteous Christians.

  288. Saints in the New Testament

  289. are not the super Christians

  290. who do everything right.

  291. No.

  292. Saints is a term

  293. that Paul uses

  294. for all Christians.

  295. It's something that's true

  296. of all of us.

  297. For everyone

  298. who's put their trust in Christ,

  299. you are a saint,

  300. according to the New Testament.

  301. And a saint,

  302. biblically speaking,

  303. is someone

  304. who's been set apart

  305. for a noble purpose.

  306. Someone who's been set apart

  307. for a noble purpose.

  308. And where have they been set apart

  309. for this noble purpose?

  310. In Ephesus.

  311. See right there,

  312. Paul says saints

  313. who are in Ephesus.

  314. Or we could even read

  315. saints who are in New Haven.

  316. Right here.

  317. Set apart by God

  318. for a noble kingdom purpose

  319. right in this city.

  320. There's a mission here,

  321. you see.

  322. We have a calling

  323. to inhabit our city,

  324. our neighborhoods,

  325. our colleges

  326. as those who have been set apart

  327. for a noble purpose.

  328. To shine the light of Christ

  329. into the darkness.

  330. To call the dead to life.

  331. To help bring the strangers home.

  332. And to love

  333. with the love of Christ.

  334. So on the one hand,

  335. we're saints

  336. in fill-in-the-blank

  337. Ephesus.

  338. But we're also faithful

  339. in Christ Jesus.

  340. We inhabit the city.

  341. Yes, we're in New Haven.

  342. We're in Ephesus.

  343. But we also inhabit Christ.

  344. We are in Christ Jesus.

  345. We are in Him.

  346. We're united

  347. and one with Him.

  348. How?

  349. How are we united

  350. to Christ?

  351. How are we in Him?

  352. We get how we're in Ephesus.

  353. We sort of live here.

  354. We pick up the language

  355. of New Haven.

  356. Right?

  357. Which is one of the things

  358. you pick up

  359. if you live in New Haven

  360. long enough.

  361. You say right

  362. at the end of all

  363. of your sentences.

  364. But how do we inhabit?

  365. How do we dwell

  366. in oneness with Christ?

  367. Well,

  368. Paul says here,

  369. it's by faith.

  370. Faithful in Christ Jesus.

  371. And faithful here

  372. means not so much.

  373. Paul's not talking so much

  374. about our trustworthiness

  375. or our reliability

  376. to do or to accomplish things.

  377. rather it's as if he's saying,

  378. he's talking about

  379. those who have placed

  380. their trust in Christ.

  381. Those who are believers

  382. in Christ Jesus.

  383. Faith,

  384. trust,

  385. belief,

  386. they're all sort of

  387. the same word

  388. and concept

  389. in the New Testament.

  390. So he's talking about

  391. those who have been

  392. united to Christ

  393. through trust,

  394. through faith.

  395. who are you?

  396. Who am I?

  397. Aren't these some of the most

  398. foundational questions

  399. we can ask?

  400. And our blueprint here

  401. is saying right from the start

  402. that first and foremost,

  403. you are through faith

  404. in Christ Jesus.

  405. And in Christ Jesus

  406. through faith,

  407. not works,

  408. not family background,

  409. not wealth,

  410. not status.

  411. No.

  412. Through the simple gift

  413. of faith,

  414. you are united

  415. to the king.

  416. And being united to him,

  417. you are a saint

  418. with a mission

  419. to inhabit your city

  420. as an ambassador.

  421. So friends,

  422. when you wake up

  423. in the morning

  424. and before the flood

  425. of your to-do list

  426. comes crashing

  427. into your brain,

  428. this week,

  429. first thing,

  430. try reminding yourself

  431. of this

  432. before your feet

  433. even hit the floor.

  434. Remind yourself

  435. that you are a child

  436. of a king

  437. and that you have been

  438. set apart

  439. for a noble purpose

  440. in this place

  441. and in this time.

  442. And that first

  443. and foremost,

  444. you are not

  445. what your education level

  446. says you are

  447. and not what your job title

  448. says you are

  449. and not what your bank account

  450. amounts to.

  451. You are first

  452. and foremost,

  453. if you've placed

  454. your trust in Jesus,

  455. you are beloved

  456. in him.

  457. and this book,

  458. as we peel back

  459. the layers,

  460. is going to unpack that.

  461. It's going to unpack

  462. what it means

  463. to be in Christ

  464. and it's going to do that

  465. in stunning ways.

  466. I guarantee you

  467. that if you haven't studied

  468. the book of Ephesians before,

  469. you are going to be shocked

  470. by what this book says

  471. is true of you

  472. and true of the church

  473. in Christ.

  474. I guarantee it.

  475. And if you have studied

  476. the book of Ephesians before

  477. and you haven't been shocked,

  478. you haven't understood

  479. what you've been reading,

  480. this book is going to

  481. blow your mind

  482. about who God has made you

  483. in his son.

  484. Third thing,

  485. last.

  486. This blueprint

  487. is about God's will,

  488. it's about our identity,

  489. and last,

  490. it's about grace.

  491. Grace to you

  492. and peace

  493. from God our Father

  494. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  495. Grace.

  496. Friends,

  497. what is grace?

  498. In the Bible,

  499. grace is undeserved favor.

  500. It's favor

  501. that you've done

  502. nothing to deserve.

  503. And you know,

  504. this whole book

  505. is structured

  506. according to the deep logic

  507. logic of grace.

  508. It's structured around it.

  509. It's a blueprint

  510. of God's grace.

  511. And I want to show you

  512. how the whole book

  513. is structured

  514. before we wrap up.

  515. How Paul put this

  516. whole book together.

  517. He wrote it actually

  518. in two halves.

  519. And in chapter 1,

  520. verse 3,

  521. look there,

  522. we read,

  523. blessed be the God

  524. and Father

  525. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  526. This is chapter 1,

    Isaiah 1:3

  527. verse 3.

  528. Who has blessed us

  529. in Christ

  530. with every spiritual blessing

  531. in the heavenly places.

  532. Now,

  533. next week,

  534. we're going to unpack

  535. that verse

  536. in a little more detail.

  537. But for now,

  538. notice that that verse

  539. is all about

  540. what God has done

  541. for us

  542. in Christ.

  543. And for the next

  544. three chapters,

  545. Paul's going to unfold

  546. all that God

  547. has done for us.

  548. What he's accomplished

  549. in Christ

  550. on our behalf.

  551. That's chapters 1,

  552. 2,

  553. and 3,

  554. the first half

  555. of the book.

  556. Now look at chapter 4,

  557. verse 1.

  558. Paul writes,

  559. I therefore,

  560. a prisoner for the Lord,

  561. urge you to walk

  562. in a manner worthy

  563. of the calling

  564. to which you have been called.

  565. And that begins

  566. the second half

  567. of the letter.

  568. Where Paul,

  569. having laid this foundation

  570. of what God

  571. has done for us

  572. in Christ,

  573. now tells us

  574. what our life

  575. should look like

  576. in response.

  577. How do we walk?

  578. How do we live

  579. as those who have received

  580. every spiritual blessing

  581. in Christ?

  582. And that's chapters 4,

  583. and 5,

  584. and 6.

  585. So you see how

  586. this whole thing

  587. is put together?

  588. Chapters 1,

  589. 2,

  590. and 3

  591. tell us what's true.

  592. And chapters 4,

  593. 5,

  594. and 6

  595. tell us now

  596. what to do.

  597. And as I said,

  598. that, friends,

  599. is the deep logic,

  600. the deep pattern

  601. of the gospel of grace.

  602. This is the blueprint

  603. at its most

  604. foundational level.

  605. First,

  606. God's grace.

  607. Then,

  608. in response,

  609. are works.

  610. You know,

  611. we go through

  612. most of life

  613. thinking this way.

  614. Most of our life

  615. we go along

  616. thinking that

  617. if I obey,

  618. then God

  619. will accept me.

  620. We put works

  621. first,

  622. then God's favor.

  623. And that is

  624. the blueprint

  625. that nearly all of us

  626. build our lives on

  627. by default,

  628. isn't it?

  629. If I'm good enough,

  630. then I'll be blessed.

  631. Then I'll be accepted.

  632. Recently,

  633. I was at my

  634. son's preschool.

  635. We had this little

  636. end-of-year picnic

  637. back in May.

  638. And one of the ladies

  639. there,

  640. she's a real cool lady,

  641. she had this t-shirt on

  642. that said,

  643. no yoga,

  644. K-N-O-W,

  645. no yoga,

  646. no peace.

  647. So if you do yoga,

  648. bam,

  649. you get peace.

  650. It's that easy.

  651. But isn't that

  652. kind of the logic

  653. that we all live by,

  654. right?

  655. If you devote yourself

  656. to the practice,

  657. if you do the work,

  658. if you exercise,

  659. if you try hard,

  660. then as a result

  661. of the work

  662. that you put in,

  663. you'll know peace.

  664. Now,

  665. I'm not just picking

  666. on yoga

  667. because that's what

  668. happens in every

  669. area of our life.

  670. In our work,

  671. in our relationships,

  672. whatever,

  673. we are programmed

  674. to think that my

  675. acceptance is based

  676. on my performance.

  677. If I get a good grade,

  678. I'll get a good job.

  679. If I make her laugh,

  680. I'll get a second date,

  681. right?

  682. That's how it works.

  683. And on and on and on.

  684. But Paul is showing us here

  685. that Christianity

  686. is completely different.

  687. That the message

  688. of Christianity

  689. is that God

  690. accepts us

  691. by grace

  692. first,

  693. apart from our performance,

  694. and then,

  695. as a result,

  696. we obey.

  697. Look again

  698. at chapter 4,

  699. verse 1.

  700. Therefore,

  701. Paul says,

  702. I urge you,

  703. da-da-da-da-da-da-da.

  704. What's the therefore

  705. referring back to?

  706. All of chapters 1 and 3.

  707. The grace of God

  708. that brings us

  709. peace with God.

  710. Grace

  711. and peace.

  712. And of course,

  713. the great question is,

  714. how is God able

  715. to accept us

  716. apart from our works?

  717. How is God able

  718. to come to us

  719. and accept us

  720. wholly apart

  721. from our performance?

  722. Why would God,

  723. who is holy and just,

  724. extend to you and me

  725. grace and peace?

  726. Well, again,

  727. the answer is right here

  728. in these opening lines

  729. in verses 1 through 2.

  730. In each of these

  731. three little lines

  732. that we've read,

  733. what do we see

  734. again and again?

  735. Or rather,

  736. who do we see

  737. again and again?

  738. Who is it that Paul

  739. just can't help

  740. but mention

  741. as he speaks

  742. of God's will

  743. and our identity

  744. and God's grace?

  745. Who's at the center

  746. of this blueprint

  747. that Paul has

  748. constructed for us?

  749. Who is it that we

  750. should build our lives

  751. around and upon?

  752. Who is it that this

  753. building ultimately

  754. is meant to display?

  755. Three times

  756. in three breaths

  757. he's mentioned here.

  758. Look again.

  759. Christ Jesus.

  760. An apostle of Christ Jesus.

  761. Faithful in Christ Jesus.

  762. Grace and peace to you

  763. from God our Father

  764. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  765. Because of what God

  766. has done in Jesus,

  767. we are made partakers

  768. of his grace,

  769. his undeserved favor.

  770. When we were sinners

  771. under God's wrath,

  772. Christ came

  773. and stood in our place

  774. and died for our sins

  775. and was raised again.

  776. God unleashing him

  777. from the power

  778. of death and sin

  779. and unleashing everyone

  780. who trusts in him

  781. from sin

  782. and from death.

  783. friend,

  784. is there any

  785. better gift

  786. that you could

  787. imagine

  788. receiving?

  789. Bicycles are great.

  790. A nice piece of

  791. lakefront property

  792. would be even better.

  793. But you and I both know

  794. that those gifts fade.

  795. they grow old,

  796. they lose their splendor,

  797. and eventually

  798. we long for something else.

  799. Even if we get

  800. what our hearts desire

  801. in earthly things,

  802. sooner or later,

  803. it's not enough.

  804. But this gift,

  805. the gift of God

  806. in Christ Jesus,

  807. this gift of grace

  808. and peace,

  809. this gift of knowing God

  810. will know no end.

  811. It will never lose

  812. its splendor,

  813. and it will never lose

  814. its power to thrill us.

  815. And instead of growing

  816. older and older

  817. with time,

  818. it grows newer

  819. and newer

  820. into all eternity.

  821. And what we see

  822. right here

  823. in Ephesians

  824. is that this gift

  825. is available

  826. right now

  827. for all

  828. who come to God

  829. through Jesus Christ

  830. and put their trust

  831. in Him.

  832. Friend,

  833. do you have that gift?

  834. And if you have it,

  835. do you know

  836. what to do with it?

  837. In the coming months,

  838. this book is going

  839. to show us

  840. what it is

  841. and what to do with it.

  842. So keep coming back

  843. and we'll keep unfolding

  844. this blueprint together.

  845. Okay?

  846. Let's pray.

  847. Lord Jesus,

  848. we began our service

  849. tonight

  850. by confessing

  851. that we are

  852. forgetful people.

  853. But Lord,

  854. we also confess

  855. that there are many things

  856. we haven't learned

  857. about you

  858. and about your gift

  859. of grace.

  860. So we thank you

  861. for the book of Ephesians

  862. that teaches us

  863. the ins and the outs

  864. and the foundation

  865. of what it is

  866. we stand on.

  867. Lord,

  868. bless our journey

  869. through this book

  870. this coming year

  871. and help us to grow

  872. more and more

  873. to the praise

  874. of your glorious grace,

  875. we pray.

  876. In Jesus' name,

  877. Amen.

  878. Amen.

  879. Amen.

  880. Amen.

  881. Amen.

  882. Amen.

  883. Amen.

  884. Amen.

  885. Amen.
