  1. that? 1241. Good. All right. Now you all have no excuse but to turn there. Oh, 976. Okay.

  2. So if you turn to 1200 and you just get a list of like metric conversions from old ancient things,

  3. you know, you've got the wrong addition, according to Jonathan. Thanks, Jonathan. Thanks, Eric.

  4. Great. All right. Hey, we are in Ephesians chapter 1 verses 3 through 14. Let me read this text for us.

    Ephesians 1:3–14

  5. Paul writes,

  6. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every

  7. spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the

  8. world that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons

  9. through Jesus Christ according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace with

  10. which he has blessed us in the beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness

  11. of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us in all wisdom and

  12. insight, making known to us the mystery of his will according to his purpose, which he set forth

  13. in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time to unite all things in him, things in heaven and

  14. things on earth. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according

  15. to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the

  16. first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word

  17. of truth, the gospel of your salvation and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

  18. It was the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it to the praise of his glory.

  19. Well friends, imagine you're visiting a new city for the first time. Let's say it's New York City.

  20. You've never been there. You're visiting for the first time and after you do some sightseeing around

  21. town, you decide to take an elevator up to the top of one of the great skyscrapers. Maybe it's the

  22. Empire State Building or maybe it's Rockefeller Center, say, and imagine that at each floor as you go up,

  23. you could sort of take a look out the window. So, well then, you'd say maybe 10 stories up,

  24. you could look out and you could maybe see around the whole city block. And then as you went up maybe

  25. 20 or 30 stories, maybe you could start to see the whole neighborhood. And then 40 or 50 stories up,

  26. maybe you could see the whole borough, maybe you could see all of Manhattan. But then as you kept

  27. going 60, 70, 80 stories up, well from there you can probably see the whole city or most of it

  28. stretching out in every direction. And from that height, you get to see things you never noticed

  29. before when you were down on the ground. You start to see how all those streets and avenues,

  30. which just felt like a jumbled mess down below, now sort of make this beautiful grid of intersecting

  31. lines and pathways. And you get to see how all those green spaces and parks, which before just sort

  32. of felt randomly tucked here and there, now they sort of dot the landscape and they add margin and they

  33. add nature to what you're seeing, almost like brushstrokes from an artist all around the city.

  34. In other words, you're able to kind of take in the whole of it from that height and the whole

  35. actually starts to become gloriously more than all of its parts. And for a moment, as you're standing

  36. up there sort of taking the whole thing in, you're in awe. It's actually a bit breathtaking

  37. to stand up there and to see the scope, to see the grandeur of this city as it kind of stretches out.

  38. Well, in our passage tonight that we just read, it's as if we've taken an elevator up,

  39. as it were, to the 80th or the 90th floor so that we can see the grand scope, not merely of some

  40. earthly city, but to see the grand scope of God's eternal plan of redemption.

  41. And when we take it in, as Paul sort of pushes us up to the heights, as we take it in from this

  42. kind of dizzying height, we're meant to be awestruck. We're meant for a moment to have our breath taken

  43. away. We're meant to be swept up in worship and praise of God. That's how this whole section begins

  44. in verse 3, right? Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now the word blessed here is

  45. just another word for praise, an expression of praise, of delight, of wonder. Blessed be this God.

  46. Now chapter 1 as a whole is actually structured very simply. Verses 3 through 14 are praise to God,

  47. and then verses 15 through 23, prayer to God. Very simple chapter. But you know, it's worth pointing

  48. out that this praise of God in verses 3 through 14, that kind of extends for like a whole column

  49. in our English Bibles. In the Greek, in the language that Paul actually wrote it in, it's actually one

  50. long, intricate sentence. It's one long, 12 verses worth of one long, unbroken, unfolding,

  51. firework display of praise to God. This is the kind of long sentence that your composition teachers

  52. would say, fail, too long, cut it up. But no, for Paul it's this long, unfolding thing.

  53. Now in the next three coming weeks, we're actually going to look a little more closely

  54. at each section of it. But you know, even if we do sort of break it down in that way in the coming

  55. weeks, I want us to see tonight that we're meant to view it all as one piece. We're meant to actually

  56. sort of take it all in together to get the kind of rooftop view of the whole thing. Because if you

  57. read the sentence in the original, as we just said, Paul almost doesn't let you stop reading.

  58. He doesn't stop the sentence. You're actually driven further and further and richer and richer

  59. until you step out onto that 80th floor observation deck and then gasp in wonder at who God is and what

  60. God has done. Now, as we sort of stand up here, viewing at this sort of skyline view of God's

  61. redemption, I think Paul wants us to see, and I think we can at least take in four things.

  62. First, something about God's nature. Second, something about God's story. Third, God's goal.

  63. And then fourth, our participation in all of this, our way in. So first, let's take a look at God's

  64. nature. Scan your eyes over the whole of this text. And although it is one long sentence, you kind of

  65. discern a three-fold structure here, do you not? Verses 3 through 6 speak mostly of the Father who

  66. chose us. Verses 7 through 10 focus on the Son who redeems and unites us. And then verses 11 through

  67. 14 highlight the work of the Holy Spirit who seals us for an eternal inheritance. Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

  68. Look again closely at verse 3. It's actually right there from the start if you kind of have eyes to see it.

  69. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us in Christ the Son with

  70. every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. And most commentators will point out that the word

  71. spiritual there is actually a pointer at least to the work of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, as verse 14 says.

  72. So you see, in the unfolding of God's grand work of redemption,

  73. we see an expression of his eternal nature as the triune God. That this one God has existed

  74. eternally in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  75. Now, of course, if you were to grab your concordance or if you would go online and jump on Bible Gateway and

  76. do a search for the word Trinity, you would find it nowhere in your Bible.

  77. It wasn't until the third century that Christians started using that word Trinity with frequency.

  78. But it is a word that captures and summarizes a very basic biblical truth about God.

  79. So it's a very helpful word. It's a very helpful language for us to describe a biblical reality.

  80. You know, if you were able to kind of go back in time and ask the Apostle Paul or the Apostle Peter or the Apostle John

  81. and you would sort of pull them aside and say, hey, Paul, do you believe in the Trinity?

  82. Paul would probably say, what the heck is the Trinity?

  83. And then you would say, well, here's what we mean.

  84. We mean that there's one true God, but he's eternally existed in three persons, the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  85. And then Paul would say, oh, yeah, that's exactly what I believe.

  86. In fact, that's a pretty good way of talking about it. I wish I would have thought of that.

  87. And in fact, you know, this idea of God being by nature triune is something that Jesus himself actually taught.

  88. After his resurrection, Jesus instructs the church to go make disciples and baptize them, do you remember,

  89. in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

  90. Notice very carefully the language that Jesus uses there.

  91. In the name, singular, not names, but the name, one name, one God,

  92. but three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  93. In fact, in the book of Ephesians, you see God's triune nature coming up actually all over the place.

  94. It's like water in the ground that just keeps seeping through all the cracks.

  95. Look down at chapter 2, verse 18.

  96. Skip ahead another chapter.

  97. So we've seen it in chapter 1.

  98. Now look at chapter 2, verse 18.

  99. Paul's speaking of our peace with God and our peace with one another that comes through the work of Jesus' cross.

  100. And he says, through him, through Jesus the Son,

  101. we both, that is Jews and Gentiles, have access in one spirit to the Father.

  102. Through the Son, by the Spirit, to the Father.

  103. And at the end of chapter 3, look at the end of chapter 3, verses 14 through 19.

  104. Paul prays now for spiritual strength and insight.

  105. And again, it's unmistakably Trinitarian.

  106. He says,

  107. And it keeps going on and on and on and on through this book.

  108. I'd actually encourage you this week, take some time, read through this whole book of Ephesians in a sitting or two,

  109. and take note of how many times you see this kind of Trinitarian shape or structure to Paul's thinking.

  110. And then note the context.

  111. What's the context in which Paul is saying?

  112. Is he talking about redemption?

  113. Is he talking about prayer?

  114. Is he talking about ethics?

  115. And you'll see that it just colors everything.

  116. That for Paul, God's nature matters for almost everything.

  117. Once you start looking for it, it's all over the place.

  118. Now, why is God's triune nature so important?

  119. Who cares, in other words?

  120. Well, there are a lot of things that we could say here.

  121. If you're looking for a good book recommendation, I'm going to recommend a book.

  122. So, this is a book by a guy named Fred Sanders called The Deep Things of God.

  123. How the Trinity Changes Everything.

  124. A friend of mine gave me this book, and I probably wouldn't have read it otherwise, but I read it, and it's really good.

  125. So, if you're looking for a good book to just start to get your toes wet in this understanding of God as Trinity, that's a good one.

  126. The Deep Things of God by Fred Sanders.

  127. He's a theologian out of Biola in California.

  128. But, let's stick to our text tonight.

  129. What is Paul doing here?

  130. He's praising God for his work of redemption.

  131. And we see here that the work of the Father, and the work of the Son, and the work of the Holy Spirit are like unbroken links in a chain.

  132. That they can't be divided, or separated, or staved off from one another.

  133. Augustine, the great church father, put it this way.

  134. He said, the external works of the Trinity are undivided.

  135. In other words, what God does in creation as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit can't be broken up into bits.

  136. What the Father does can't be cut off from what the Son does.

  137. And that can't be separated from what the Spirit does.

  138. And you see that in our text, don't you?

  139. The Father chose.

  140. But if the Father chose, then certainly the Son will redeem those that the Father chose.

  141. And if the Son has redeemed those that the Father chose, then certainly the Spirit will seal those that the Son has redeemed.

  142. They can't be broken, and they can't be divided.

  143. What the Father plans, the Son accomplishes.

  144. And what the Son accomplishes, the Spirit applies and brings it to completion.

  145. And friends, that means that God's very nature, who He is from all time, ensures that the whole of our salvation is complete.

  146. That it will be done.

  147. You know, I often have plans that never come to completion.

  148. I began a project painting the exterior of my house this summer.

  149. And it started out as a plan.

  150. I chose the wall of my house that was going to get painted.

  151. Because I knew I wasn't going to get the whole thing done.

  152. So I just picked one side.

  153. And then it took me a few weeks to go out and purchase the materials to redeem them from Sherwin-Williams to get the job done.

  154. And then I worked on it for a few weeks.

  155. And the summer got busy.

  156. And I still haven't brought that project to completion.

  157. I got the primer coat on and all the sanding done.

  158. But I still need to actually put the final coat of paint on the thing.

  159. And at this rate, I'm hoping just to get it done before Christmas.

  160. Before it snows.

  161. And then it's too cold to paint.

  162. And it won't dry.

  163. Now friends, how many of our best laid plans are like that?

  164. The best laid plans of mice and men often go wry.

  165. Wrote the Scottish poet Robert Burns.

  166. That's true of us.

  167. Often our best laid plans go wry.

  168. But friends, what's true of us is not true for God.

  169. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  170. The one true God.

  171. His plans will not be thwarted.

  172. They will not go awry.

  173. What he plans, he performs.

  174. And what God performs, he perfects.

  175. You see.

  176. It's in the very nature of God.

  177. In saving you, Christian.

  178. Brother and sister.

  179. It's in the very nature of God.

  180. In saving you.

  181. To save you all the way.

  182. God's not going to stop halfway and get distracted.

  183. He's not going to leave off three quarters of the way.

  184. He's not going to purchase a salvation for you in Christ.

  185. And then wait around to see if you're going to get it.

  186. He's going to make sure that it sees you the whole way home.

  187. He's not going to leave us until he's done.

  188. He cannot.

  189. It's in his very nature.

  190. Friends, I wonder if we meditated on that fact.

  191. How much of our anxiety and our worry and our fear would start to subside.

  192. To know that what God plans, he performs.

  193. And what he performs, he will perfect.

  194. Well, let's move on to the second thing that we see.

  195. As we take in this skyline view of God's redemption.

  196. What do we notice here?

  197. We notice.

  198. We notice God's story.

  199. Take a look again at the movement from father to son to Holy Spirit here.

  200. And you'll see that it's also a movement from election.

  201. Which is just another word for choosing, by the way.

  202. To elect, to choose in verse 4.

  203. It moves from election in verse 4.

  204. To redemption in verse 7.

  205. To inheritance in verse 11.

  206. Election, God chooses his people for his very own.

  207. Redemption, God sets them free.

  208. Purchasing them from slavery.

  209. And then inheritance, God gives them a home.

  210. Gives them a place where they can dwell with him forever.

  211. Where they can have this intimate relationship with him.

  212. Now, if we were to keep those three movements in mind.

  213. And we were to go back to the very beginning of the Bible.

  214. Go back to the very beginning of the Old Testament.

  215. And we were to just start reading the story.

  216. What would we find?

  217. That this is exactly the story of Old Testament Israel.

  218. God chose them.

  219. First Abraham, then Isaac, then Jacob.

  220. Then all of Jacob's family, Israel.

  221. God chose them.

  222. And then what happened?

  223. God redeemed them from slavery in Egypt.

  224. Well, that one happened.

  225. God gave them an inheritance in the promised land.

  226. God chooses and he redeems.

  227. And he gives them a home.

  228. But you know, the Old Testament was actually just the first movement of the symphony.

  229. This is a story that God's been telling from the very beginning.

  230. But in the Old Testament, we just sort of get the first movements.

  231. The first sort of melody line of the great symphony that God's telling.

  232. In the New Testament, that melody starts to just blow open into full shape.

  233. And suddenly, all the instruments are playing.

  234. And all the harmonies.

  235. And all the transpositions are added.

  236. It's being played in this higher key.

  237. With full orchestration.

  238. And suddenly, we find in the New Testament, as the gates are sort of opened up,

  239. that it wasn't just about Abraham's family.

  240. But it was about men and women from all nations.

  241. And it wasn't just about redemption from Egypt.

  242. But it was about redemption from sin and redemption from death.

  243. And it wasn't just about an inheritance in Palestine.

  244. But it was about an inheritance in the new creation.

  245. And the whole earth made new.

  246. Paul says, church, this is your story.

  247. You know, friends, whether you like it or not,

  248. you're actually living your life according to some story.

  249. There's some plot.

  250. There's some narrative that's running at a deep level in your heart

  251. that shapes your thinking and your feeling and your acting.

  252. You might not have thought of it that way.

  253. But I guarantee you it is true.

  254. Have you ever taken a moment and just examined what that story is?

  255. Have you ever taken some time to reflect and ask deep down,

  256. what is the narrative that's shaping my life?

  257. What story do I see myself a part of?

  258. Am I a collection?

  259. Of just time and chance and energy?

  260. A big pile of chemicals and stimulus and response?

  261. And is the best that I can hope to do

  262. is leave things a little better than I found them

  263. and hopefully get a little happiness

  264. before my brief spark is extinguished

  265. and we all return into nothingness?

  266. Well, that's a bit existential for most of us.

  267. That's probably not the story we think we're living by.

  268. Most of our stories are a bit more mundane, aren't they?

  269. Get a good job.

  270. Earn a decent wage.

  271. Find the right person.

  272. Live comfortably.

  273. And hopefully when my life ends,

  274. well, I don't really want to think too much about that.

  275. What's the story for you?

  276. Friends, the Bible here is inviting us

  277. into a whole new story.

  278. It's actually inviting us into God's story.

  279. The true story of everything that is

  280. that begins with God's creation

  281. and ends with God's new creation.

  282. In fact, the way Paul would tell it here,

  283. it begins in eternity past

  284. with God's burning desire

  285. to redeem his people.

  286. It begins with creation

  287. and ends in new creation.

  288. In the middle,

  289. in the middle of that story,

  290. in the face of our rebellion against God

  291. and in the face of the death and decay

  292. that it brings,

  293. this story tells us of a God

  294. who chooses and redeems

  295. at the price of the blood of his own son

  296. and who seals and secures us

  297. by the person of his own spirit.

  298. And if you lived in that story,

  299. it would begin to change

  300. your view of everything.

  301. And it wouldn't just change

  302. your view of everything again.

  303. It would change how you feel

  304. and how you think

  305. and how you act.

  306. You know, suddenly,

  307. the material world that we inhabit

  308. isn't just raw material

  309. to be used and manipulated.

  310. No.

  311. This world is a gift of God

  312. to be cared for

  313. and to be cultivated

  314. if we're living by God's story,

  315. the one true story of all that is.

  316. And suddenly, your job,

  317. your job isn't just a means

  318. of building wealth,

  319. but your job is an avenue

  320. to serve others

  321. and to play a part

  322. of shining God's kingdom

  323. into the world.

  324. And suddenly,

  325. your relationships

  326. don't just exist

  327. for a little mutual pleasure

  328. and a little mutual help,

  329. but suddenly,

  330. they become these opportunities

  331. to call forth in one another

  332. the image of God.

  333. And they become opportunities

  334. to exercise forgiveness

  335. and grace

  336. and on and on and on.

  337. Suddenly,

  338. nothing gets untouched

  339. when you begin to live

  340. into God's story.

  341. And Paul's inviting us.

  342. We're being invited

  343. to step into it

  344. and to realize

  345. how much better it is

  346. than so many of the parodies

  347. that we try to live our lives by.

  348. Third thing.

  349. Third thing we see

  350. in this skyline view

  351. of God's redemption

  352. is God's goal.

  353. Now,

  354. what's the end

  355. that God

  356. is after here?

  357. Why is God doing all this?

  358. Why does the Father,

  359. Son,

  360. and Holy Spirit

  361. choose and redeem

  362. and steal for an inheritance?

  363. What is God doing?

  364. What is his chief end,

  365. his ultimate goal

  366. in doing all this?

  367. Well,

  368. again and again

  369. it came through

  370. that refrain.

  371. Did you catch it

  372. when we read it earlier

  373. in the service?

  374. Again and again

  375. we read

  376. to the praise

  377. of his glory.

  378. To the praise

  379. of his glory.

  380. In other words,

  381. God does

  382. all things

  383. to put on display

  384. how beautiful he is.

  385. to communicate

  386. his infinite

  387. splendor

  388. to his creation.

  389. Now,

  390. at first this sounds

  391. a bit strange,

  392. doesn't it?

  393. It sounds a bit,

  394. I don't know,

  395. how would you put it?

  396. It sounds a bit

  397. kind of egocentric

  398. of God,

  399. doesn't it?

  400. I mean,

  401. think about it.

  402. If you did something

  403. noteworthy,

  404. let's say you gave

  405. a very generous donation

  406. to a charity

  407. of some kind

  408. and a news reporter

  409. found out about this

  410. and they came to your door

  411. and they asked you,

  412. hey,

  413. why did you give such this,

  414. why did you give

  415. such a generous gift?

  416. That was really amazing.

  417. What would people think

  418. if you answered

  419. and said,

  420. well,

  421. I did it to show

  422. how incredibly glorious

  423. I am?

  424. I guarantee you

  425. that social media

  426. would explode

  427. with people calling you

  428. a self-centered jerk

  429. and all sorts of other names.

  430. You would be trending

  431. on Facebook

  432. but not in a very positive way.

  433. But you see,

  434. friends,

  435. it's very different

  436. with God.

  437. And it's different

  438. with God

  439. because,

  440. well,

  441. because God is God.

  442. A number of years ago,

  443. my wife and I

  444. took a trip to Italy

  445. and in Rome,

  446. as it turns out,

  447. there are a number

  448. of museums

  449. that you have to get

  450. tickets to

  451. like weeks in advance.

  452. And even if you have

  453. a ticket to these museums,

  454. you have to wait hours

  455. in line to get in.

  456. Now,

  457. why?

  458. Some of you are thinking,

  459. I would never wait hours

  460. to see a bunch of dead art.

  461. That sounds dumb.

  462. Why do people

  463. wait hours

  464. and plan weeks,

  465. months in advance

  466. to be able to get in

  467. to see these things?

  468. Because the things inside

  469. are worthy

  470. to be beheld.

  471. Because they're beautiful

  472. and they're worthy

  473. to be taken in

  474. and experienced

  475. and enjoyed.

  476. But friends,

  477. if that's true

  478. of human works

  479. of art,

  480. of just artifacts

  481. that we've made

  482. in our finite

  483. human capacities,

  484. how much more

  485. infinitely is it true

  486. of God

  487. to see God

  488. in his beauty,

  489. to really get a glimpse

  490. of God's splendor.

  491. You know,

  492. oftentimes,

  493. the psalmist

  494. had it right.

  495. I'd rather sit

  496. in the house of God

  497. and behold the beauty

  498. of God

  499. than do anything else.

  500. God's splendor

  501. and what Paul

  502. is saying here

  503. is that God

  504. has blown

  505. open the doors

  506. and he's done

  507. something

  508. to put

  509. his heart-thrilling,

  510. his soul-satisfying

  511. glory

  512. on display

  513. for everyone

  514. to see

  515. and to savor

  516. and to know

  517. and to enjoy.

  518. So you don't need

  519. a ticket

  520. and you don't need

  521. to wait hours

  522. to get in.

  523. God's goal

  524. is the praise

  525. of his glory

  526. and that's really

  527. good news

  528. because praising

  529. God's glory,

  530. savoring his beauty,

  531. knowing his just

  532. manifold splendor,

  533. that's the thing

  534. our hearts were made for.

  535. It's what we're

  536. starving for,

  537. really.

  538. It's the thing

  539. that haunts us

  540. every time

  541. we encounter

  542. some finite beauty,

  543. whether it's

  544. beholding nature

  545. or a piece of art

  546. or taking in

  547. a breathtaking

  548. city skyline.

  549. In each of these things

  550. there's an echo

  551. of a voice

  552. that says

  553. there's a deeper

  554. beauty to be had.

  555. A beauty

  556. that won't fade

  557. and that won't

  558. grow old

  559. because behind

  560. these finite

  561. encounters

  562. with beauty

  563. stands the glory

  564. of the

  565. infinite creator.

  566. And this

  567. infinite creator

  568. has put

  569. his glory

  570. on display

  571. in redemption.

  572. salvation.

  573. And he says

  574. anyone now

  575. can come

  576. and they can

  577. drink without

  578. price.

  579. And that leads us

  580. to our last point.

  581. We've seen

  582. God's nature

  583. and God's story

  584. and God's goal

  585. but then how do we

  586. participate in all of this?

  587. What's our entry

  588. point into this

  589. thing?

  590. How do we get

  591. in?

  592. There's a new

  593. candy store

  594. on Chapel Street

  595. I forget what

  596. it's called

  597. but when I walk

  598. by it with my

  599. kids

  600. it's like a

  601. magnet

  602. and we're just

  603. stuck to the

  604. window

  605. staring at these

  606. stacks and

  607. stacks and

  608. stacks of

  609. sugary

  610. confectionery

  611. beauties.

  612. And we never

  613. go in

  614. because they'll

  615. never take a

  616. nap if they

  617. eat all that

  618. sugar

  619. but there we

  620. are sort of

  621. standing at it

  622. and it's like

  623. bright pink

  624. and we can't

  625. get away.

  626. But friends

  627. is that us

  628. with respect

  629. to God?

  630. Are we always

  631. looking through

  632. the window

  633. at God's

  634. glory and

  635. redemption?

  636. Always out

  637. on the street

  638. never partaking

  639. always just

  640. separated and

  641. one step off?

  642. What's our

  643. way in?

  644. Look again

  645. at verse 3

  646. Blessed be the

  647. God and Father

  648. of our Lord

  649. Jesus Christ

  650. who has

  651. blessed us

  652. in Christ

  653. with every

  654. spiritual

  655. blessing

  656. in the heavenly

  657. places.

  658. Now we've

  659. just been

  660. rehearsing

  661. those spiritual

  662. blessings

  663. and we're

  664. going to

  665. unpack them

  666. in the weeks

  667. to come

  668. to be chosen

  669. by the

  670. Father

  671. to be

  672. redeemed

  673. by the

  674. Son

  675. to be

  676. sealed

  677. by the

  678. Spirit

  679. to have

  680. our hearts

  681. unleashed

  682. in the

  683. praise of

  684. God's

  685. glory

  686. and how

  687. does all

  688. of that

  689. come to

  690. us?

  691. In

  692. Christ

  693. He has

  694. blessed us

  695. in Christ

  696. with every

  697. spiritual

  698. blessing

  699. in the

  700. heavenly

  701. places.

  702. In other

  703. words,

  704. all that

  705. heaven has

  706. to give,

  707. every

  708. spiritual

  709. blessing

  710. that never

  711. fades

  712. and never

  713. decays

  714. and never

  715. grows old

  716. has been

  717. gifted to

  718. us free

  719. of charge

  720. in Christ.

  721. Christ.

  722. Do you

  723. notice how

  724. many times

  725. that phrase

  726. in Christ,

  727. in Him,

  728. through Him

  729. occurs in

  730. verses 3

  731. through 14?

  732. That's almost

  733. a dozen

  734. times.

  735. In Him,

  736. in Him,

  737. in Him.

  738. Christ is

  739. the mediator,

  740. the channel

  741. of all

  742. these blessings.

  743. God hasn't

  744. left us

  745. out on the

  746. street forever

  747. staring through

  748. the window.

  749. No,

  750. He's come

  751. out to

  752. us and

  753. He's put

  754. His arm

  755. around us

  756. and He's

  757. led us

  758. personally

  759. inside and

  760. He said,

  761. welcome,

  762. it's all

  763. yours.

  764. Friend,

  765. if you are

  766. in Christ,

  767. if you have

  768. united your

  769. life to

  770. Him in

  771. faith,

  772. then you

  773. are chosen,

  774. redeemed,

  775. sealed.

  776. Every

  777. blessing

  778. in the

  779. heavenly

  780. places

  781. is yours.

  782. Not a

  783. single

  784. one

  785. has God

  786. withheld

  787. from you

  788. in His

  789. Son.

  790. Every

  791. spiritual

  792. blessing.

  793. And of

  794. course,

  795. that's so

  796. much better

  797. than every

  798. material

  799. blessing in

  800. the earthly

  801. places,

  802. isn't it?

  803. I remember

  804. studying this

  805. book quite

  806. some time

  807. ago and

  808. coming across

  809. verse 3 and

  810. thinking,

  811. that's great,

  812. every spiritual

  813. blessing in

  814. the heavenly

  815. places.

  816. What about

  817. some material

  818. blessing once

  819. in a while,

  820. right?

  821. But you

  822. know,

  823. God doesn't

  824. promise us

  825. that in

  826. Christ.

  827. He doesn't

  828. promise us

  829. material

  830. blessings in

  831. the earthly

  832. places.

  833. But what He

  834. promises us is

  835. so much

  836. better.

  837. And why is

  838. it so much

  839. better?

  840. Well,

  841. lots of

  842. reasons and

  843. we could

  844. enumerate

  845. them all,

  846. but I

  847. mean,

  848. just to

  849. get right

  850. down to

  851. it,

  852. to put it

  853. bluntly,

  854. because

  855. material

  856. blessings

  857. won't

  858. make you

  859. happy.

  860. They

  861. might for

  862. a little

  863. while,

  864. don't get

  865. me wrong,

  866. if your

  867. car breaks

  868. down,

  869. a new

  870. car will

  871. make you

  872. happy.

  873. I get

  874. that,

  875. right?

  876. They

  877. might make

  878. you happy

  879. for a little

  880. while,

  881. but not

  882. for long,

  883. not in a

  884. lasting

  885. way.

  886. And of

  887. course,

  888. God isn't

  889. against

  890. material

  891. blessings.

  892. He wants

  893. us to

  894. care about

  895. economic

  896. injustice.

  897. He wants

  898. us to

  899. care about

  900. the poor.

  901. It's not

  902. what this

  903. verse is

  904. about.

  905. But friends,

  906. you and I

  907. both know

  908. that if your

  909. bank account

  910. is full

  911. and your

  912. heart is

  913. empty,

  914. that you

  915. would cash

  916. out the

  917. bank account

  918. in an

  919. instant to

  920. fix your

  921. empty

  922. heart.

  923. You would

  924. cash it

  925. out in an

  926. instant to

  927. find someone

  928. who loves

  929. you and

  930. who looks

  931. at you

  932. with all

  933. of your

  934. flaws and

  935. chooses you

  936. and who

  937. would lay

  938. down their

  939. life for

  940. you and

  941. who would

  942. stick by

  943. you to

  944. the end

  945. no matter

  946. how many

  947. times you

  948. screw up.

  949. You would

  950. cash out

  951. your bank

  952. account in

  953. a second

  954. for someone

  955. like that.

  956. And don't

  957. you see,

  958. friends,

  959. that's exactly

  960. what God

  961. has done

  962. for you

  963. in Christ.

  964. He has

  965. looked at

  966. you,

  967. he has

  968. loved you,

  969. he has

  970. bled and

  971. died for

  972. you,

  973. and he

  974. has promised

  975. to be

  976. with you

  977. to the

  978. very end

  979. and let

  980. nothing

  981. tear you

  982. away.

  983. And you

  984. know now

  985. in him,

  986. whether you

  987. have material

  988. blessings or

  989. not,

  990. your heart

  991. is full.

  992. And that

  993. means that

  994. if you

  995. get material

  996. blessings,

  997. they won't

  998. rule you.

  999. And if you

  1000. don't get

  1001. them,

  1002. it doesn't

  1003. crush you.

  1004. You're free

  1005. because you

  1006. have every

  1007. spiritual

  1008. blessing in

  1009. the heavenly

  1010. places.

  1011. every

  1012. spiritual

  1013. blessing in

  1014. the heavenly

  1015. places in

  1016. Christ

  1017. Jesus our

  1018. Lord.

  1019. Friends,

  1020. are you in

  1021. him?

  1022. Or are you

  1023. still outside

  1024. looking in?

  1025. God has

  1026. unleashed from

  1027. heaven.

  1028. We've been

  1029. staring out the

  1030. 80th floor

  1031. observation tower

  1032. out at God's

  1033. plan of

  1034. redemption,

  1035. and there's

  1036. God's nature,

  1037. and there's

  1038. God's story,

  1039. and there's

  1040. God's goal,

  1041. but at the

  1042. end of the

  1043. day,

  1044. it all comes

  1045. down on

  1046. this razor's

  1047. edge that

  1048. is pointed

  1049. directly at

  1050. each one of

  1051. us.

  1052. Are you

  1053. in him?

  1054. God has

  1055. unleashed from

  1056. heaven every

  1057. spiritual blessing

  1058. in Christ.

  1059. There's not a

  1060. single one he's

  1061. withheld right

  1062. there in his

  1063. son.

  1064. And all you

  1065. have to do

  1066. is lay down

  1067. your pride and

  1068. lay down your

  1069. despair and

  1070. trust in him

  1071. and take hold

  1072. of him.

  1073. And suddenly

  1074. God's goal

  1075. becomes the

  1076. thrill of your

  1077. heart and

  1078. God's story

  1079. becomes your

  1080. story and

  1081. God's nature

  1082. becomes the

  1083. one that you

  1084. get to

  1085. commune with

  1086. for all

  1087. eternity.

  1088. Blessed be

  1089. the God and

  1090. Father of our

  1091. Lord Jesus

  1092. Christ who

  1093. has blessed

  1094. us in Christ

  1095. with every

  1096. spiritual blessing

  1097. in the heavenly

  1098. places.

  1099. Let's pray.

  1100. God, thank you

  1101. tonight that we

  1102. can draw near to

  1103. you and call

  1104. you our

  1105. Father because

  1106. of our Lord

  1107. Jesus Christ

  1108. and because of

  1109. your spirit.

  1110. Lord, help us

  1111. tonight to

  1112. really believe

  1113. these things that

  1114. you tell us in

  1115. your word.

  1116. And give us,

  1117. as Paul will

  1118. pray later in

  1119. this letter,

  1120. give us

  1121. strength in

  1122. our inner

  1123. being by

  1124. your Holy

  1125. Spirit to

  1126. really grasp

  1127. Jesus in

  1128. all of the

  1129. manifold,

  1130. unrelenting

  1131. love that you've

  1132. given us in

  1133. Christ.

  1134. God, wake up

  1135. our hearts

  1136. because they're

  1137. so sleepy.

  1138. Remind us

  1139. because we're

  1140. so forgetful.

  1141. Lord, even

  1142. for some of

  1143. us here

  1144. tonight, call

  1145. us forth from

  1146. death into

  1147. life.

  1148. For those who

  1149. are far off,

  1150. God, bring

  1151. them near.

  1152. Bring them

  1153. near in

  1154. Christ so

  1155. that we might

  1156. live to the

  1157. praise of

  1158. your glory.

  1159. Amen.
