  1. Turn with me in your Bible to Daniel chapter 8, wonderful hymn of assurance, and that's

    Daniel 8 chapter mention

  2. actually where the book of Daniel is going to get to in chapter 12, is the promise of

  3. resurrection.

  4. We won't see that explicitly in today's passage, but that's the hope that the book is leading

  5. up to.

  6. Daniel chapter 8, page 745 in a pew Bible.

    Daniel 8 chapter mention

  7. We'll read the whole chapter together.

  8. In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after that

  9. which appeared to me at the first.

  10. And I saw in the vision, and when I saw, I was in Susa, the citadel, which is in the province

  11. of Elam.

  12. And I saw in the vision, and I was at the Ulai Canal.

  13. I raised my eyes and saw, and behold, a ram standing on the bank of the canal.

  14. It had two horns, and both horns were high, but one was higher than the other, and the

  15. higher one came up last.

  16. I saw the ram charging westward and northward and southward.

  17. No beast could stand before him, and there was no one who could rescue from his power.

  18. He did as he pleased and became great.

  19. As I was considering, behold, a male goat came from the west across the face of the whole

  20. earth without touching the ground, and the goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes.

  21. He came to the ram with the two horns, which I had seen standing on the bank of the canal,

  22. and he ran at him in his powerful wrath.

  23. I saw him come close to the ram, and he was enraged against him and struck the ram and

  24. broke his two horns, and the ram had no power to stand before him, but he cast him down to

  25. the ground and trampled on him, and there was no one who could rescue the ram from his power.

  26. Then the goat became exceedingly great, but when he was strong, the great horn was broken,

  27. and instead of it there came up four conspicuous horns toward the four winds of heaven.

  28. Out of one of them came a little horn, which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward

  29. the east, and toward the glorious land.

  30. It grew great even to the host of heaven, and some of the host and some of the stars it

  31. threw down to the ground and trampled on them.

  32. It became great, even as great as the prince of the host.

  33. And the regular burnt offering was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was

  34. overthrown, and a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering

  35. because of transgression, and it will throw truth to the ground, and it will act and prosper.

  36. Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who spoke,

  37. For how long is the vision concerning the regular burnt offering, the transgression that makes

  38. desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and host to be trampled underfoot?

  39. And he said to me, For 2,300 evenings and mornings.

  40. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.

  41. When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it.

  42. And behold, there stood before me one having the appearance of a man.

  43. And I heard a man's voice between the banks of the Ulai, and it called Gabriel,

  44. Make this man understand the vision.

  45. So he came near where I stood.

  46. And when he came, I was frightened and fell on my face, but he said to me, Understand,

  47. O son of man, that the vision is for the time of the end.

  48. And when he had spoken to me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground,

  49. but he touched me and made me stand up.

  50. He said, Behold, I will make known to you what shall be at the latter end of the indignation,

  51. for it refers to the appointed time of the end.

  52. As for the ram that you saw with the two horns, these are the kings of Media and Persia,

  53. and the goat is the king of Greece.

  54. And the great horn between his eyes is the first king.

  55. As for the horn that was broken, in place of which four others arose,

  56. four kingdoms shall arise from his nation, but not with his power.

  57. And at the latter end of their kingdom, when the transgressors have reached their limit,

  58. a king of bold face, one who understands riddles, shall arise.

  59. His power shall be great, but not by his own power.

  60. And he shall cause fearful destruction, and shall succeed in what he does,

  61. and destroy mighty men and the people who are the saints.

  62. By his cunning he shall make deceit prosper under his hand,

  63. and in his own mind he shall become great.

  64. Without warning he shall destroy many,

  65. and he shall even rise up against the prince of princes,

  66. and he shall be broken, but by no human hand.

  67. The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true,

  68. but seal up the vision, for it refers to many days from now.

  69. And I, Daniel, was overcome, and lay sick for some days.

  70. Then I rose and went about the king's business,

  71. but I was appalled by the vision, and did not understand it.

  72. How do you deal with disappointment?

  73. Last Saturday I was talking with a few guys at the men's breakfast.

  74. We were talking about how we can encourage one another,

  75. and build each other up,

  76. and we were talking about why do we need encouragement as Christians.

  77. And it struck me as we were talking that,

  78. especially the longer you live on this earth,

  79. the more that we face disappointment.

  80. Now, disappointment can take a variety of forms.

  81. Sometimes it involves losing loved ones,

  82. or ending relationships.

  83. Sometimes it involves remaining in a relationship,

  84. a marriage, or a friendship, or a family relationship,

  85. but knowing that right now it's not what you hoped it would be,

  86. and it doesn't seem to be getting fixed soon.

  87. Maybe you feel like your career path has hit a dead end.

  88. You're stuck in a job you don't like with a boss who doesn't like you.

  89. Maybe you've seen the inside of ugly church conflicts,

  90. or moral failures of church leadership.

  91. Maybe you're disillusioned with our national political scene,

  92. and the way our culture seems to be trending.

  93. How do we deal with disappointment without losing hope,

  94. and without latching on to false hopes?

  95. Because false hopes only increase our sense of despair

  96. when they don't come to pass.

  97. I think this is one of the questions that our passage today is addressing.

  98. And what we'll see in this passage is that God is shaping his people's expectations

  99. for the future,

  100. preparing them to face some very trying and difficult circumstances,

  101. but at the same time reassuring them

  102. that he's still on the throne,

  103. and he's going to triumph in the end.

  104. Now, we've been going through the book of Daniel.

  105. We've finished chapters 2 through 7.

  106. If you remember, that's the central section of the book

  107. that was written in Aramaic,

  108. the international trade language of the Persian Empire.

  109. That section had a broader view.

  110. It was sort of addressed to the whole world,

  111. introducing the world to the one true God

  112. who rescues, reveals, and rules.

  113. But at the beginning of chapter 8,

  114. the language shifts back to Hebrew.

  115. The local language of Judah and Jerusalem.

  116. And the focus of the rest of the book

  117. shifts to the particular concerns

  118. of the exiled people of God at the time.

  119. They were asking questions like these.

  120. Will God bring us back home

  121. to the land that he promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?

  122. Will God provide for the rebuilding of his house,

  123. the temple in Jerusalem, his city?

  124. Will our nation exiled and scattered because of sin

  125. be gathered together under God once again?

  126. And the answer that God gives in these chapters,

  127. chapters 8 through 12,

  128. is on the one hand very hopeful,

  129. and on the other hand very sobering.

  130. On the one hand, he says,

  131. yes, I will bring you home,

  132. just as I promised in Jeremiah 29.

  133. Yes, the temple and the city will be rebuilt.

  134. Verse 11 through 14 of this chapter

  135. only makes sense if there is a temple in Jerusalem.

  136. And yes, I will gather you together

  137. as my people once again.

  138. On the other hand,

  139. the answer God gives here is very sobering.

  140. The world will continue to be dominated

  141. by beastly empires

  142. and arrogant rulers who do not acknowledge God.

  143. Some of these rulers will specifically

  144. persecute God's people

  145. and profane God's temple.

  146. Even after you get back home,

  147. you will face great suffering

  148. and prolonged opposition.

  149. The road ahead is not going to be smooth or easy.

  150. This is what Daniel is saying,

  151. what God's saying to his people

  152. through this vision of Daniel.

  153. He's giving them a hopeful message,

  154. but he's also giving them a very sobering

  155. and realistic picture of the future.

  156. Now, if you think back to the beginning of Daniel,

  157. the people of Israel had just been taken into exile.

  158. They were brought away from their land,

  159. put in the middle of enemy territory.

  160. And many of them in that kind of situation

  161. could have been tempted to despair

  162. and just give up hope

  163. and just decide to abandon their identity

  164. as the people of the one true God.

  165. Perhaps they could have thought,

  166. we've just blown it.

  167. God's given us over to our enemies.

  168. He's done with us.

  169. He's going to wipe us out.

  170. But if you look at what God says to them

  171. at the beginning of the exile,

  172. in passages like Jeremiah 29

  173. or even the first four chapters of Daniel,

  174. it's a message of encouragement.

  175. And God says, I'm right here with you.

  176. God gives Daniel and his friends wisdom

  177. and understanding and favor,

  178. even with the king of Babylon.

  179. God says, yes, you've been exiled because of your sin,

  180. but don't despair.

  181. Don't think that everything's just going downhill from here.

  182. Don't think that there's no hope,

  183. that it's no good trying anymore at all.

  184. I'm with you.

  185. There's hope in the midst of your exile.

  186. But here in chapter eight,

  187. the time of their exile was coming to an end.

  188. And within only a few years,

  189. large numbers of Israelites

  190. would be heading back to Jerusalem

  191. and beginning to resettle the land

  192. and rebuild the city of Jerusalem

  193. and eventually rebuild the temple.

  194. And in that situation,

  195. many of them could have been vulnerable

  196. to embrace false hopes

  197. or unrealistic expectations

  198. that the future would now be easy and smooth.

  199. And so God's preparing his people

  200. for the reality that

  201. it's going to be more complicated than that.

  202. There's a bumpy road ahead.

  203. And there's a long road ahead.

  204. So this brings us to the vision of chapter eight.

  205. Now, this is the third

  206. of four major prophetic visions

  207. in the book of Daniel.

  208. I've included a bulletin insert

  209. to help you see a little bit

  210. about how some of these visions fit together.

  211. So on this side,

  212. you can see the visions of chapter two

  213. and chapter seven, right?

  214. At the beginning and the end of the Aramaic section,

  215. they correspond to each other.

  216. They both have four successive kingdoms

  217. followed by the everlasting kingdom of God.

  218. I've listed two of the most common ways

  219. that scholars have connected

  220. the four kingdoms of Daniel's visions

  221. to historical empires.

  222. Honestly, you can make a good case

  223. for either one.

  224. We can talk later if you're interested

  225. in putting those together.

  226. But then the visions of chapter eight

  227. and chapter 11 in this Hebrew section

  228. focus more narrowly on the trials of God's people

  229. under a particularly hostile ruler

  230. who appears in chapter eight as the little horn.

  231. And we'll get to that.

  232. But they focus specifically

  233. on the Persian and Greek periods.

  234. Now what I want to do today

  235. is walk through Daniel's vision in chapter eight

  236. and its interpretation.

  237. Thank you, Evan.

  238. And just walk through Daniel's vision in chapter eight

  239. and then consider some implications for us today.

  240. All right, so let's go through this.

  241. Verse two, start at the beginning of the chapter.

  242. Verse two, Daniel sees himself in Susa, the citadel.

  243. Susa was 220 miles east of Babylon.

  244. It had been conquered by the Medes

  245. and it would become one of the four capital cities

  246. of the Persian empire under Cyrus.

  247. So it's a fitting location for Daniel's vision

  248. which begins with the empire of the Medes and Persians

  249. represented by the ram.

  250. According to verse 20.

  251. And then later on the kingdom of Greece

  252. which arises later.

  253. Now Daniel wasn't necessarily physically in Susa

  254. but that's where he saw himself in the vision.

  255. Is this city that would become central

  256. in the Persian empire.

  257. And Daniel sees two animals.

  258. A ram and then a goat.

  259. And both would have been recognized symbols of power.

  260. Powerful animals representing powerful rulers

  261. in the ancient near east.

  262. Verse three and four.

  263. The ram has two horns.

  264. Representing Media and Persia.

  265. Now the Medes arose first

  266. in what is now northwestern Iran.

  267. They became prominent after the fall of the Assyrian empire

  268. in 612 BC.

  269. But the Persians were stronger

  270. even though they came later.

  271. Cyrus the Persian who was also of Median descent

  272. defeated the Median king

  273. and united the Medes and Persians

  274. in a single empire in 550 BC.

  275. That's the picture of two horns.

  276. One horn comes up later.

  277. The second horn is the stronger.

  278. And the Persian empire dominated the near east

  279. for 200 years.

  280. So verse four.

  281. See that picture.

  282. The ram charging west, north, south.

  283. Seemingly unconquerable.

  284. He did as he pleased.

  285. He became great.

  286. But then in verse five.

  287. The goat.

  288. Behold.

  289. A male goat came from the west.

  290. Now verse 21.

  291. I'm sort of working with Daniel's vision

  292. and the interpretation.

  293. We're going through both at the same time.

  294. So verse 21.

  295. You see that.

  296. The goat is the king of Greece.

  297. Verse five.

  298. Describes the goat's rapid descent to power.

  299. Coming from the west across the face of the earth

  300. without touching the ground.

  301. He's sort of rapid, rapidly moving.

  302. And he's marked by a conspicuous or prominent horn

  303. between his eyes.

  304. Which verse 21 identifies as the first king of Greece.

  305. Now if you've studied your ancient history,

  306. it's pretty obvious that this is talking about

  307. Alexander the Great.

  308. 336 BC.

  309. He became the ruler of Greece.

  310. For the next 12 years, he expanded his empire

  311. from Greece into North Africa,

  312. through the Middle East,

  313. and all the way to Western India.

  314. He was undefeated in battle.

  315. He is seen as one of the greatest military generals

  316. who ever lived.

  317. Verse six to seven says,

  318. he destroyed the ram and stomped on him.

  319. He took over the former Median Persian empire.

  320. He was not only great like the ram,

  321. but verse eight, exceedingly great.

  322. But then, same thing happens to him that happened to the ram.

  323. When he was strong, the great horn was broken.

  324. Alexander the Great fell ill and died suddenly

  325. at the age of only 32 while he was in Babylon.

  326. After his death, his kingdom was divided

  327. between four of his military generals.

  328. They fought over it for a while,

  329. and then eventually it sort of settled into four pieces.

  330. Verse 22 refers to those.

  331. And those four kingdoms endured for 150 years.

  332. And Daniel's vision in chapter 11 focuses in more detail

  333. on two of those four kingdoms,

  334. which he calls the king of the north

  335. and the king of the south,

  336. who were the Seleucids in Mesopotamia

  337. and the Ptolemies in Egypt,

  338. who were right next to the promised land

  339. and had the most impact on that.

  340. So, now, before we go on,

  341. and before you get lost

  342. in all those ancient history details,

  343. let me make two brief observations so far.

  344. First, this is an unstable picture.

  345. Kingdoms rise up, they seem invincible,

  346. they last for a long time,

  347. and then they fall just as quickly as they arose.

  348. Second, this is a very scary vision.

  349. Beastly empires,

  350. arrogant rulers,

  351. dominating the world through violence and intimidation,

  352. seeking to make themselves great,

  353. one after another.

  354. And if you notice,

  355. there's no divine intervention in this vision.

  356. There's no word of guidance from heaven.

  357. There's no comforting word of assurance,

  358. at least not yet.

  359. And then in verse 9 to 12,

  360. the scariest part of it all.

  361. Out of one of them came a little horn.

  362. Daniel spends more time describing this little horn

  363. in verse 9 through 14 and 23 through 25

  364. than either the ram or the goat.

  365. Now, if you remember,

  366. in chapter 7,

  367. there was also a little horn.

  368. So, turn back a page.

  369. Chapter 7, verse 8,

  370. Daniel sees a terrifying beast

  371. with ten horns.

  372. And then verse 8,

  373. I considered the horns,

  374. and behold,

  375. there came up among them another horn,

  376. a little one,

  377. before which three of the first horns

  378. were plucked up by the roots.

  379. And behold,

  380. in this horn

  381. were eyes like the eyes of a man

  382. and a mouth

  383. speaking great things.

  384. And then verse 25

  385. of chapter 7

  386. goes on to describe

  387. the work of this little horn,

  388. this ruler.

  389. And it says,

  390. he shall speak words

  391. against the Most High.

  392. Chapter 7, verse 25,

  393. and shall wear out

  394. the saints of the Most High

  395. and shall think to change

  396. the times and the law

  397. and they shall be given

  398. into his hand

  399. for a time times

  400. and half a time.

  401. So this little horn,

  402. as an arrogant guy,

  403. but he's not just

  404. an arrogant ruler,

  405. there's plenty of those,

  406. he specifically attacks

  407. God

  408. and God's people

  409. and God's law.

  410. And for a time,

  411. he succeeds

  412. in doing so.

  413. Now turn ahead

  414. to chapter 8.

  415. This little horn

  416. appears again.

  417. And again,

  418. he's characterized

  419. by extreme arrogance.

  420. Verse 9, 10, 11,

  421. and 25

  422. talk about

  423. he grew exceedingly great.

  424. Verse 10,

  425. it grew great

  426. even to the host of heaven.

  427. He's sort of challenging

  428. the angels of God.

  429. Verse 11,

  430. he became great

  431. even as great

  432. as the prince of the host.

  433. That is God himself.

  434. Verse 25 says,

  435. he shall even rise up

  436. against the prince of princes.

  437. Isaiah 14

  438. had used similar language

  439. when Isaiah was describing

  440. the king of Babylon.

  441. Isaiah said this,

  442. Isaiah said,

  443. you said in your heart,

  444. I will ascend to heaven.

  445. Above the stars of God,

  446. I will set my throne on high.

  447. I will ascend above

  448. the heights of the clouds.

  449. I will make myself

  450. like the most high.

  451. Then of course,

  452. Isaiah says,

  453. but God's going to bring you down.

  454. And so this little horn

  455. is described

  456. in a very similar way,

  457. rising up against God

  458. and in his arrogance

  459. attacking the people of God,

  460. the worship of God

  461. and the truth of God.

  462. Verse 10,

  463. some of the host

  464. and some of the stars

  465. it threw to the ground

  466. and trampled on them.

  467. And verse 12 says,

  468. and a host

  469. will be given over to it

  470. together with

  471. the regular burnt offering.

  472. Now,

  473. these verses

  474. are a bit tricky

  475. to understand.

  476. Okay,

  477. because usually

  478. the word host,

  479. the word host

  480. just means an army.

  481. Okay,

  482. it doesn't mean,

  483. it's not a hospitality word here.

  484. Right?

  485. It means an army.

  486. And so it's usually referring

  487. to either the stars in the sky

  488. or the angels of heaven.

  489. But here,

  490. it seems to actually be referring

  491. to God's people on earth.

  492. There's a connection,

  493. and we'll see this

  494. in a bit again,

  495. but there's a deep connection

  496. between God's people on earth

  497. and God's armies in heaven.

  498. And Daniel shows us

  499. that they're connected together

  500. even in how they're described.

  501. it's not that

  502. it's not that this guy

  503. actually conquers angels,

  504. but that he's attacking

  505. God's people

  506. who are being protected

  507. and who are linked

  508. to the armies of heaven.

  509. Okay?

  510. Verse 11,

  511. so he's attacking the people,

  512. the host of God.

  513. Then,

  514. verse 11,

  515. he attacks the worship of God.

  516. The regular burnt offering

  517. was taken away

  518. and the place of his sanctuary

  519. was overthrown.

  520. In other words,

  521. he takes over

  522. the temple of God

  523. in Jerusalem

  524. where burnt offerings

  525. were offered

  526. every morning and evening.

  527. That was a sign

  528. of total devotion to God.

  529. That was the people

  530. coming before God

  531. every day and saying,

  532. God,

  533. we are seeking

  534. your kingdom first.

  535. We love you.

  536. You are the one

  537. and only true God.

  538. And he takes it away.

  539. He banishes the worship of God.

  540. Verse 12 says,

  541. it will throw truth

  542. to the ground.

  543. He attacks the people of God,

  544. the worship of God,

  545. and the truth of God.

  546. And verse 12 says,

  547. this little horn

  548. will act and prosper.

  549. Now,

  550. if the ram is Median Persia,

  551. if the goat is Greece,

  552. then who fits the description

  553. of the little horn?

  554. Now,

  555. there are a lot of things

  556. that scholars disagree about

  557. when you look

  558. at the book of Daniel

  559. and read different commentaries.

  560. But everyone pretty much agrees

  561. on this one.

  562. Everyone pretty much agrees

  563. the little horn

  564. of chapter 8

  565. is primarily referring

  566. to a man named

  567. Antiochus IV.

  568. He was the Seleucid ruler

  569. who reigned over Syria

  570. and Palestine

  571. and Egypt

  572. from about 175

  573. to 164 BC.

  574. He is also known

  575. as Antiochus Epiphanes,

  576. which is the Greek word

  577. for manifest

  578. or displayed.

  579. On his coins,

  580. there was an impression

  581. of his head

  582. with a star on his head

  583. and the words,

  584. King Antiochus,

  585. God manifest,

  586. bearer of victory.

  587. Now,

  588. why does Daniel's vision

  589. focus so much

  590. on this one guy?

  591. Right?

  592. This vision spans

  593. 400 years

  594. and yet he focuses

  595. much of his vision

  596. on this one man,

  597. this little horn.

  598. And the answer is,

  599. the reason why,

  600. is Antiochus

  601. was not just one

  602. among many arrogant

  603. and proud rulers.

  604. He,

  605. specifically,

  606. more than anyone else,

  607. in this 400 year period,

  608. he attempted to wipe out

  609. the people of God,

  610. the worship of God,

  611. and the truth of God.

  612. So what did Antiochus do

  613. just a little bit?

  614. 169 BC,

  615. Antiochus invaded Jerusalem.

  616. He needed some cash

  617. for his military campaigns.

  618. So he took

  619. the valuable vessels

  620. from the temple of God.

  621. And then he went back home.

  622. You think,

  623. well,

  624. that's pretty bad,

  625. but Nebuchadnezzar did it too.

  626. But then two years later,

  627. it gets much worse.

  628. 167 BC,

  629. he came back

  630. determined

  631. to wipe out

  632. the monotheistic faith,

  633. biblical faith,

  634. of the Jews,

  635. and

  636. determined to make Jerusalem

  637. into a pagan Greek city.

  638. He plundered

  639. and burned Jerusalem,

  640. killed thousands

  641. of Jews,

  642. invaded the temple,

  643. halted the daily sacrifices,

  644. dedicated the temple

  645. to the Greek god Zeus,

  646. offered a pig

  647. on the altar,

  648. burned copies

  649. of the scriptures,

  650. executed people

  651. found in possession

  652. of them,

  653. outlawed circumcision,

  654. put to death mothers

  655. who had circumcised

  656. their sons,

  657. compelled Jews

  658. to offer sacrifice

  659. to idols,

  660. and eat unclean meat

  661. on pain of death.

  662. If you ever read

  663. the books of

  664. 1st and 2nd Maccabees,

  665. they're in what we call

  666. the Apocrypha,

  667. they describe these events

  668. in more detail.

  669. It was the most

  670. intense persecution

  671. that God's people

  672. had faced,

  673. perhaps ever

  674. in their history,

  675. and certainly

  676. since the exile

  677. to Babylon.

  678. Many caved

  679. into the pressure

  680. to deny their faith,

  681. many others

  682. were killed

  683. or fled,

  684. and in the middle

  685. of it,

  686. it seemed

  687. that God

  688. did nothing

  689. to stop it.

  690. How could a pagan

  691. idol worshiper

  692. walk into

  693. the holiest place

  694. on earth

  695. that God had said,

  696. I will put my name here,

  697. I will dwell here

  698. with you,

  699. this is my holy place,

  700. how could he

  701. walk in there,

  702. abolish God's commandments,

  703. set up worship

  704. of idols,

  705. and get away

  706. with it?

  707. Seeing a vision

  708. like this

  709. or experiencing

  710. events like these

  711. can provoke

  712. many questions.

  713. Now many of us

  714. haven't experienced

  715. that kind of

  716. persecution

  717. or opposition

  718. to our faith

  719. or trauma

  720. in our lives.

  721. One question

  722. that comes

  723. that might be

  724. asked is why.

  725. Some of the Psalms

  726. ask this question,

  727. Psalm 22,

  728. my God,

  729. my God,

  730. why have you

  731. forsaken me?

  732. Why are you

  733. so far

  734. from the words

  735. of my groaning?

  736. I say to God,

  737. my rock,

  738. why have you

  739. forgotten me?

  740. Why do I go

  741. mourning

  742. because of the

  743. oppression

  744. of the enemy?

  745. Sometimes that's

  746. a question

  747. that comes up.

  748. Maybe you've

  749. been through

  750. trauma

  751. of some kind.

  752. Maybe you

  753. can understand

  754. what it's like

  755. to be attacked

  756. and persecuted

  757. in some form

  758. or other.

  759. But the question

  760. that's asked here

  761. in verse 13

  762. is how long,

  763. which is also

  764. a common question

  765. in the Psalms.

  766. Psalm 13,

  767. how long,

  768. O Lord?

  769. Will you

  770. forget me

  771. forever?

  772. How long

  773. will you

  774. hide your

  775. face from me?

  776. How long

  777. must I

  778. take counsel

  779. in my soul

  780. and have

  781. sorrow in my

  782. heart?

  783. All the day,

  784. how long

  785. shall my

  786. enemy be

  787. exalted

  788. over me?

  789. O Lord,

  790. Psalm 94,

  791. O Lord,

  792. how long

  793. shall the

  794. wicked triumph?

  795. God,

  796. in the midst

  797. of torment

  798. and injustice

  799. and persecution

  800. and mistreatment,

  801. the God of the

  802. Bible permits

  803. his people to

  804. ask such

  805. questions.

  806. And in fact,

  807. by teaching us

  808. to pray through

  809. the Psalms,

  810. God teaches us

  811. to include

  812. those questions

  813. in our prayers

  814. and to identify

  815. with fellow believers

  816. who cry out

  817. in pain

  818. and under

  819. persecution,

  820. to call out

  821. to God

  822. when his word

  823. is twisted

  824. and thrown

  825. to the ground

  826. and when his

  827. people are

  828. forcibly

  829. prevented

  830. from worshiping

  831. and praying

  832. together.

  833. How long?

  834. But the

  835. striking thing

  836. here is

  837. look at who

  838. asked this

  839. question.

  840. It's not

  841. Daniel who

  842. asked this

  843. question.

  844. It's not

  845. a human

  846. being who

  847. asked this

  848. question.

  849. It is a

  850. holy one.

  851. That is a

  852. heavenly being

  853. who calls

  854. out on behalf

  855. of God's

  856. suffering and

  857. mistreated

  858. people.

  859. When the

  860. people of God

  861. are attacked,

  862. when the

  863. worship of God

  864. is forcibly

  865. stopped,

  866. when the

  867. truth of God

  868. is thrown

  869. to the ground,

  870. heaven takes

  871. notice,

  872. and the

  873. holy ones

  874. cry out

  875. on our

  876. behalf,

  877. how long?

  878. If you

  879. have ever

  880. been or

  881. will be

  882. persecuted,

  883. mistreated,

  884. opposed,

  885. for the

  886. name of

  887. Christ,

  888. know that

  889. you are

  890. not alone.

  891. Even if

  892. you have

  893. no human

  894. companions,

  895. the heavenly

  896. host is

  897. watching and

  898. crying out to

  899. God on

  900. your behalf.

  901. And in

  902. verse 14,

  903. the answer

  904. comes,

  905. how long?

  906. For

  907. 2,300

  908. evenings and

  909. mornings.

  910. Then the

  911. sanctuary shall

  912. be restored to

  913. its rightful

  914. state.

  915. In other

  916. words,

  917. violent

  918. hostility

  919. against God's

  920. word,

  921. God's

  922. people,

  923. and God's

  924. worship will

  925. last for a

  926. while,

  927. but it

  928. won't last

  929. forever.

  930. Antiochus took

  931. over the

  932. temple in

  933. 167 BC.

  934. About three

  935. years later,

  936. in 164 BC,

  937. he ended up

  938. provoking a

  939. violent revolt.

  940. And Judas

  941. Maccabeus retook

  942. the city of

  943. Jerusalem with

  944. his army,

  945. rededicated the

  946. temple to

  947. Yahweh, to

  948. the God of

  949. the Bible,

  950. and restored

  951. the worship

  952. of God.

  953. Now,

  954. scholars go

  955. back and

  956. forth about

  957. these 2,300

  958. evenings and

  959. mornings.

  960. Is it 2,300

  961. evening and

  962. morning sacrifices

  963. or 1,150

  964. days?

  965. Close to,

  966. but not quite,

  967. the amount of

  968. time between

  969. the stopping of

  970. the sacrifices

  971. in 167 and

  972. the rededication

  973. of the temple

  974. in 164.

  975. Is it 2,300

  976. days?

  977. Just about the

  978. amount of

  979. time between

  980. the murder of

  981. the legitimate

  982. high priest in

  983. 171 to the

  984. rededication of

  985. the temple in

  986. 164.

  987. But I think

  988. it's not meant

  989. to be an exact

  990. number.

  991. I think it's

  992. best to see

  993. 2,300 evenings

  994. and mornings as

  995. a symbolic or

  996. representative number

  997. for a significant

  998. but limited

  999. period of time.

  1000. time.

  1001. Just as Daniel

  1002. talked about

  1003. time, times,

  1004. and half a

  1005. time in

  1006. chapter 7,

  1007. verse 25.

  1008. The point is,

  1009. the persecution

  1010. is going to

  1011. last for a

  1012. while, not

  1013. just for a

  1014. day or two,

  1015. but it's

  1016. also not

  1017. going to

  1018. last forever.

  1019. And at the

  1020. end of this

  1021. frightening vision

  1022. in verse 14

  1023. and verse 26

  1024. and verse 25

  1025. and verse 26,

  1026. there's finally

  1027. a word of

  1028. comfort.

  1029. the sanctuary

  1030. shall be

  1031. restored.

  1032. Verse 14

  1033. and the end

  1034. of verse 25,

  1035. he shall be

  1036. broken.

  1037. This little

  1038. horn shall be

  1039. broken, but

  1040. by no human

  1041. hand.

  1042. Antiochus

  1043. died not

  1044. when Judas

  1045. Maccabeus took

  1046. Jerusalem, but

  1047. in the next

  1048. year.

  1049. He died in

  1050. 163 B.C.

  1051. So here's the

  1052. point.

  1053. Arrogant nations

  1054. will eventually

  1055. collapse.

  1056. Those who

  1057. fight against

  1058. God's people

  1059. will finally

  1060. perish.

  1061. This was

  1062. true of

  1063. Antiochus in

  1064. the second

  1065. century B.C.,

  1066. perhaps the

  1067. greatest threat

  1068. that God's

  1069. people faced

  1070. over the

  1071. course of

  1072. several

  1073. centuries.

  1074. And

  1075. throughout

  1076. history,

  1077. it has

  1078. also been

  1079. true of

  1080. many other

  1081. arrogant

  1082. rulers who

  1083. have

  1084. targeted

  1085. God's

  1086. people,

  1087. who have

  1088. prohibited

  1089. God's

  1090. worship,

  1091. and who

  1092. have

  1093. suppressed

  1094. God's

  1095. word.

  1096. They have

  1097. prospered

  1098. for a

  1099. while,

  1100. but none

  1101. of them

  1102. has

  1103. lasted

  1104. forever.

  1105. None of

  1106. their

  1107. empires

  1108. have

  1109. lasted

  1110. forever.

  1111. They have

  1112. eventually

  1113. been

  1114. brought

  1115. down.

  1116. Now,

  1117. what do we

  1118. take away

  1119. from this

  1120. vision?

  1121. Well,

  1122. let's look

  1123. at Daniel's

  1124. response

  1125. himself in

  1126. verse 15

  1127. to 18

  1128. and verse

  1129. 27.

  1130. First off,

  1131. Daniel's

  1132. confused.

  1133. Verse 15,

  1134. he says,

  1135. when I saw

  1136. the vision,

  1137. I sought

  1138. to understand

  1139. it.

  1140. And God

  1141. sends an

  1142. angel,

  1143. Gabriel,

  1144. first time

  1145. Gabriel appears

  1146. in the

  1147. Bible by

  1148. name,

  1149. but God

  1150. sends an

  1151. angel to

  1152. explain the

  1153. meaning of

  1154. the vision

  1155. to him.

  1156. But even

  1157. after Gabriel

  1158. explains it

  1159. in verse 27,

  1160. the end of

  1161. verse 27,

  1162. he says,

  1163. I still

  1164. didn't

  1165. understand it.

  1166. Now,

  1167. isn't that

  1168. interesting?

  1169. Even when

  1170. God himself

  1171. gives a

  1172. vision about

  1173. the future

  1174. to one of

  1175. his most

  1176. faithful and

  1177. intelligent and

  1178. humble servants,

  1179. even when

  1180. God sends

  1181. an angel

  1182. to explain

  1183. the vision

  1184. to him,

  1185. Daniel still

  1186. doesn't

  1187. fully

  1188. understand it.

  1189. You see,

  1190. the future

  1191. is always

  1192. going to be

  1193. somewhat

  1194. veiled

  1195. to us.

  1196. That's why

  1197. you should

  1198. be suspicious

  1199. of anyone

  1200. who claims

  1201. to understand

  1202. all the

  1203. prophecies

  1204. in the

  1205. Bible

  1206. with perfect

  1207. clarity

  1208. and has

  1209. detailed

  1210. predictions

  1211. of exactly

  1212. what's going

  1213. to happen

  1214. in the future

  1215. leading up

  1216. to the return

  1217. of Christ.

  1218. That's not

  1219. how we're

  1220. meant to

  1221. respond to

  1222. these visions.

  1223. Even as

  1224. they reveal

  1225. some things,

  1226. they also

  1227. keep some

  1228. things mysterious.

  1229. How,

  1230. when,

  1231. exactly what

  1232. it's going

  1233. to look

  1234. like.

  1235. So Daniel's

  1236. confused.

  1237. His understanding

  1238. is limited.

  1239. But second,

  1240. he's utterly

  1241. overwhelmed.

  1242. Verse 17.

  1243. He's

  1244. frightened

  1245. and fell

  1246. on my

  1247. face.

  1248. He fainted

  1249. with fear.

  1250. Verse 18.

  1251. I fell

  1252. into a deep

  1253. sleep with

  1254. my face

  1255. to the

  1256. ground.

  1257. He's

  1258. completely

  1259. overcome.

  1260. Verse 27.

  1261. Even

  1262. after it's

  1263. interpreted,

  1264. he was

  1265. sick in

  1266. bed for

  1267. many days.

  1268. And even

  1269. after he

  1270. got up

  1271. and went

  1272. back to

  1273. work,

  1274. he says,

  1275. I was

  1276. appalled

  1277. by this

  1278. vision.

  1279. You see,

  1280. God doesn't

  1281. usually pull

  1282. back the

  1283. curtain on

  1284. the future

  1285. as he did

  1286. with Daniel

  1287. because it

  1288. would be

  1289. too much

  1290. for us

  1291. to handle.

  1292. I mean,

  1293. it would be

  1294. too much

  1295. for most

  1296. of us

  1297. to handle

  1298. if God

  1299. just showed

  1300. us some

  1301. of our

  1302. own personal

  1303. future and

  1304. what our

  1305. life is going

  1306. to look like

  1307. one,

  1308. two,

  1309. three,

  1310. four,

  1311. five years

  1312. down the

  1313. line.

  1314. Most of

  1315. us wouldn't

  1316. be able

  1317. to handle

  1318. it.

  1319. And so

  1320. 99.99%

  1321. of the time

  1322. God wisely

  1323. keeps it

  1324. concealed from

  1325. us and

  1326. gives it

  1327. to us

  1328. one moment

  1329. at a time.

  1330. But every

  1331. once in a

  1332. while,

  1333. God pulls

  1334. back the

  1335. curtain and

  1336. gives some

  1337. insight into

  1338. the future

  1339. to one of

  1340. his servants

  1341. because he

  1342. wants us to

  1343. know that

  1344. the future

  1345. is in his

  1346. hands just

  1347. as the past

  1348. and the

  1349. present are

  1350. in his

  1351. hands.

  1352. He wants

  1353. us to

  1354. know that

  1355. when everything

  1356. seems chaotic

  1357. and out of

  1358. control and

  1359. unfair and

  1360. overwhelming,

  1361. overwhelming,

  1362. when the

  1363. world seems

  1364. dominated by

  1365. arrogant

  1366. beasts,

  1367. when God's

  1368. people are

  1369. persecuted and

  1370. attacked,

  1371. and when there

  1372. doesn't seem to

  1373. be any divine

  1374. intervention

  1375. that you can

  1376. see.

  1377. God wants us

  1378. to know he's

  1379. still on the

  1380. throne and

  1381. evil won't

  1382. triumph in the

  1383. end.

  1384. And he wants

  1385. us to know

  1386. that God

  1387. isn't surprised

  1388. by all that's

  1389. happening to

  1390. us.

  1391. He even

  1392. gave us a

  1393. heads up

  1394. beforehand that

  1395. it was going to

  1396. be difficult,

  1397. but he's bigger

  1398. than the trial

  1399. we're experiencing

  1400. and he's going

  1401. to bring us

  1402. through the

  1403. darkness into

  1404. the light

  1405. once again.

  1406. Most of us,

  1407. if we've lived

  1408. in this country,

  1409. haven't experienced

  1410. the kind of

  1411. persecution that

  1412. the Jewish

  1413. people did

  1414. under Antiochus

  1415. Epiphanes.

  1416. We're quite

  1417. far away from

  1418. that.

  1419. But whatever

  1420. the nature of

  1421. the opposition

  1422. or being

  1423. personally attacked

  1424. for no apparent

  1425. reason,

  1426. whatever the

  1427. suffering and

  1428. trials you may

  1429. be going through,

  1430. whatever the

  1431. things that are

  1432. disappointments

  1433. that threaten

  1434. to kill your

  1435. hope and lead

  1436. you to just

  1437. despair and

  1438. give up,

  1439. God wants to

  1440. say,

  1441. I'm with

  1442. you.

  1443. It's not

  1444. going to

  1445. last forever.

  1446. You know,

  1447. we can also

  1448. find comfort

  1449. in something

  1450. that Daniel

  1451. only saw

  1452. from a

  1453. distance.

  1454. Daniel saw

  1455. a holy one,

  1456. a heavenly

  1457. being calling

  1458. out on behalf

  1459. of God's

  1460. suffering and

  1461. mistreated

  1462. people.

  1463. But we see

  1464. in Jesus

  1465. Christ,

  1466. the true

  1467. God

  1468. manifest.

  1469. We see

  1470. the holy

  1471. God,

  1472. God,

  1473. who became

  1474. a human

  1475. being and

  1476. who entered

  1477. into our

  1478. pain and

  1479. suffering and

  1480. took upon

  1481. himself the

  1482. consequences of

  1483. our sin and

  1484. guilt and who

  1485. called out when

  1486. he hung on the

  1487. cross,

  1488. my God,

  1489. my God,

  1490. why have you

  1491. forsaken me?

  1492. And yet he

  1493. wasn't saying

  1494. that in defiant

  1495. rejection of God,

  1496. he was saying

  1497. that in humble

  1498. trust.

  1499. God,

  1500. because one of

  1501. the next words

  1502. he said is,

  1503. Father,

  1504. into your

  1505. hand,

  1506. I commit

  1507. my spirit.

  1508. Jesus faced

  1509. every one of

  1510. our worst

  1511. fears,

  1512. every one of

  1513. our greatest

  1514. disappointments,

  1515. every one of

  1516. the things that

  1517. threatened to

  1518. crush our

  1519. faith and

  1520. hope and

  1521. love once

  1522. and for

  1523. all,

  1524. and he came

  1525. up on the

  1526. other side.

  1527. he rose

  1528. again three

  1529. days later

  1530. and he

  1531. promises what

  1532. we just sang

  1533. about in that

  1534. great hymn,

  1535. Jesus lives

  1536. and so shall

  1537. I.

  1538. Jesus lives

  1539. and so shall

  1540. I for

  1541. eternity and

  1542. Jesus lives

  1543. and so shall

  1544. I today and

  1545. tomorrow and

  1546. this week and

  1547. through whatever

  1548. we have to

  1549. endure during

  1550. the time that

  1551. we're on this

  1552. earth.

  1553. on the night

  1554. before he was

  1555. crucified,

  1556. Jesus said to

  1557. his disciples,

  1558. the world is

  1559. going to hate

  1560. you because

  1561. they hated

  1562. me first.

  1563. If they

  1564. persecuted me,

  1565. they'll persecute

  1566. you too.

  1567. If they kept

  1568. my word,

  1569. they'll also

  1570. keep yours.

  1571. And then he

  1572. said, I've said

  1573. all these things

  1574. to you to

  1575. keep you from

  1576. falling away,

  1577. to keep you

  1578. from falling

  1579. into despair

  1580. when life

  1581. doesn't turn

  1582. out the way

  1583. you hoped,

  1584. when the

  1585. road is

  1586. longer and

  1587. bumpier and

  1588. harder than

  1589. you ever

  1590. imagined.

  1591. And to

  1592. keep you from

  1593. embracing a

  1594. false hope that

  1595. your life will

  1596. always be easy

  1597. and smooth,

  1598. that's not what

  1599. Jesus ever

  1600. promised.

  1601. But he said,

  1602. I've also said

  1603. these things to

  1604. you so that

  1605. you might have

  1606. peace.

  1607. In the world

  1608. you will have

  1609. trouble,

  1610. but take heart.

  1611. I have

  1612. overcome the

  1613. world.

  1614. Jesus gives

  1615. us a very

  1616. sobering and

  1617. realistic picture

  1618. of what to

  1619. expect,

  1620. but he also

  1621. gives us a

  1622. very hopeful

  1623. word.

  1624. Take heart.

  1625. I have

  1626. overcome the

  1627. world.

  1628. Let us

  1629. pray.

  1630. Amen.

  1631. Father, we

  1632. thank you for

  1633. this vision of

  1634. Daniel.

  1635. We thank you,

  1636. Lord, for the

  1637. courage that you

  1638. have given to

  1639. your people in

  1640. years and

  1641. centuries past,

  1642. those who have

  1643. stood firm and

  1644. who have endured

  1645. great trials and

  1646. who are that

  1647. great cloud of

  1648. witnesses that

  1649. Hebrews speaks

  1650. about that

  1651. surround us.

  1652. and even in

  1653. revelation,

  1654. call out to

  1655. you, how

  1656. long, O

  1657. Lord?

  1658. And yet,

  1659. Lord, we

  1660. thank you above

  1661. all for Jesus

  1662. Christ, the

  1663. author and

  1664. perfecter of our

  1665. faith, who for

  1666. the joy set

  1667. before him

  1668. endured the

  1669. cross, scorning

  1670. its shame, and

  1671. sat down at the

  1672. right hand of

  1673. God.

  1674. Lord, we pray

  1675. that we would

  1676. consider him who

  1677. endured such

  1678. hardship so that

  1679. we would not grow

  1680. weary and lose

  1681. heart.

  1682. Lord, we pray

  1683. that you would

  1684. make us a

  1685. people who are

  1686. hopeful, not

  1687. because we embrace

  1688. false hopes, not

  1689. because we live by

  1690. wishful thinking,

  1691. but a people who

  1692. have our hope

  1693. firmly rooted in

  1694. you, our

  1695. crucified and

  1696. risen Savior.

  1697. And Lord, that

  1698. you would give us

  1699. faith and courage

  1700. to live for you

  1701. day by day.

  1702. We thank you in

  1703. Jesus' name.

  1704. Amen.
