  1. Am I on? No, I've got to turn it on. No, no. Good. How about now? Can you hear me? Yes.

  2. Good. Alright. Hey, we're looking at Daniel chapter 9 this morning, continuing our series

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  3. in the Old Testament book of Daniel.

  4. So lately Beth and I have been doing quite a bit of pre-marriage counseling, which we

  5. love doing with couples. And one of the topics that we always cover is the topic of expectations.

  6. What expectations, preconceived ideas, assumptions, hopes are you bringing with you into this

  7. relationship? We try to uncover those. Because nothing can cause conflict or disappointment.

  8. Or even despair in a relationship that seems faster than unarticulated and unaddressed expectations.

  9. So you need to talk about them. And more often than not, couples need to adjust them to reality.

  10. But you know, the same is true in spiritual life. What sort of expectations ought we to

  11. have in our life with God? This is actually something of vital importance because much like a young,

  12. nice couple with unbeautical expectations, we can end up in disappointment or turmoil or frustration

  13. or even despair. But thankfully we have texts like the one we're looking at this morning.

  14. Daniel chapter 9, which helps us to be moving on the way, which helps us to shape the right

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  15. expectations for what our life with God will look like as we pursue His kingdom as a church

  16. in the midst of the kingdoms of this world. So if you haven't done so already, turn to

  17. Daniel chapter 9. It's page 747 in the Pew Bible. If you look there, you'll notice that the outline

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  18. of Daniel 9 is actually quite simple. It shows us first a prayer that we need to pray, and

  19. then it will show a second an answer that we need to hear. A prayer that we need to pray,

  20. and an answer we need to hear. So let's dive in first. A prayer we need to pray. Let's read

  21. the first half of chapter 9, starting in verse 1 and heading in verse 19. In the first year

  22. of Darius, the son of Hoshveros, by descent Amid, who is made king over the realm of the

  23. Calvians, in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number

  24. of years that according to the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet must pass before

  25. the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely 70 years. Then I turned my face to the Lord

  26. God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. I pray

  27. to the Lord my God in made confession, saying, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps

  28. covenant and steadfast love of those who love him and keep his commandments. We have sinned

  29. and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules.

  30. We have not listened to your servants and prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes,

  31. and our fathers, and all the people of the land. To you, O Lord, belongs righteousness,

  32. but to us hope and shame. As at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  33. and to all Israel, those who are near and those who are far away, and all the lands to which

  34. you have driven them because of the treachery that they have committed against you. To us,

  35. O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we

  36. have sinned against you. To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we've

  37. rebelled against him and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in

  38. his walls, which he set before us by his servants and prophets. All Israel has transgressed your

  39. law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice. And the curse and oaths that are written

  40. in the law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned

  41. against them. He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against our rulers

  42. who rule us by bringing upon us a great calamity. For under the whole heaven there has not been

  43. anything done like what has been done against Jerusalem. As it is written in the law of Moses,

  44. all this calamity has come upon us. Yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our

  45. God, turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. Therefore the Lord has

  46. kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us. For the Lord our God is righteous in all

  47. the works that he has done. And we have not obeyed his voice. And now, O Lord our God,

  48. who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and have made a name

  49. for yourself as at this day, we have sinned, we have done wickedly. O Lord, according to

  50. all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city, Jerusalem,

  51. your holy hill, because of our sins and for the iniquities of our fathers. Jerusalem and your

  52. people have become a byword among all who are around us. Now, therefore, O God, listen

  53. to the prayer of your servant who is pleased from her seat. And for your own sake, O Lord,

  54. make your face to shine upon your sanctuary which is desolate. O my God, incline your ear

  55. and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations in the city that is called by your name. For

  56. we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great

  57. mercy. O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. Delay not for your own sake,

  58. O my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.

  59. Amen. A few years ago, the writer, Anne Lamott, wrote a little book on prayer called Help,

  60. Thanks, Wow, The Three Essential Prayers. And of course, those three prayers are certainly

  61. essential. It's not a bad way of capturing their essence either. Help, the prayer of supplication

  62. and petition, asking God for what we and others need and realizing our dependence upon

  63. him. Thanks, the prayer of thanksgiving and gratitude, acknowledging that every good gift

  64. comes from God and giving him the credit that says do. And then, of course, wow, the prayer

  65. of adoration to God. The prayer of loving all simply for who God is. But you know, in Lamott's

  66. catalog of prayer, actually, something's missing. A prayer that's actually utterly essential

  67. to having a real, vital relationship with God. And that prayer is the prayer of confession.

  68. Of admitting our sin before God and asking for mercy. Now, maybe you have a hard time with

  69. the idea of confession. On one hand, if you come from a religious background, maybe the thought

  70. of confession conjures up the thought for you of sitting in a tight wooden stall, a confessional,

  71. talking through a screen, praying great prayers, and doing a lot of anti-religious activity.

  72. Well, who's all that? On the other hand, maybe the idea of confession just makes you think

  73. of being pummeled down with a bunch of false guilt. And of course, there is such a thing as

  74. false guilt, to be sure. Like when we take responsibility for things that are beyond our control.

  75. Like a parent who blames him or herself for the waywardness of their child, even though

  76. they've been faithful to the parent. Or more often, false guilt comes when we constantly

  77. compare ourselves to others. And then we beat ourselves up, thinking that we should have

  78. or be able to do what we see others around us doing. And so we feel guilty of making them

  79. accuse ourselves because we're measuring ourselves up to these human standards.

  80. But you know, none of this is what the Bible has in mind when it calls us to confession,

  81. to repentance. It's not an empty ritual. It's not wallowing in false guilt. No.

  82. It's actually the God-given means of dealing with our broken relationship with God and then

  83. with one another. Confession, you see, is the path to reconciliation and to change.

  84. After all, if there is such a thing as false guilt, there's also such a thing as real guilt.

  85. As the great angelic prayer of confession puts it, most merciful God, we confess that

  86. we have sinned against you and fought word and deed by what we have done and by what we

  87. have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbors

  88. as ourselves. You know, if we're honest, and if you and I are through with playing spiritual

  89. games, none of us can say that we have no need of confession. I'm reminded here of C.S.

  90. Lewis' opening chapter of your Christianity where he says that we've all broken the rule

  91. all. And then he says in the tongue-in-cheek, now if there are any exceptions among you, I apologize

  92. to them. They had better read some other book. You had better listen to some other servant.

  93. For nothing I am going to say concerns them. And now, turning to the ordinary human beings

  94. who are left. Indeed. Turning to us ordinary human beings who realize that we need a prayer

  95. confession. But who also need help in learning how to pray it. We come to Daniel 9. Let's look

  96. at these verses again. In verse 1, the scene opens in 539 B.C. The Babylonians have just

  97. fallen to the Persian Empire. Darius the Mede pulls over the city of Babylon. And in verse

  98. 2, Daniel, reading the prophet Jeremiah, realizes that the time of exile is about to come to an

  99. end. Now what would Daniel have been reading in the book of Jeremiah? I want to be able

  100. to think of that. Well, think of a verse like Jeremiah 25 and 11 and 12. Jeremiah says,

  101. In the people of Israel, you shall serve the king of Babylon 70 years. And after 70 years

  102. are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation for their indignity, he declares

  103. the Lord. And perhaps Daniel would have also been meditating on Jeremiah 29. Listen to verses

  104. 10 through 14. For thus says the Lord, when 70 years are completed for Babylon, I will visit

  105. you. And I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place where I know

  106. the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans for welfare and not for evil to give you

  107. a future and a hope. That verse sounds familiar, doesn't it? Then you will call upon me and come

  108. and pray to me and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all

  109. your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord. And I will restore your fortunes

  110. and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I've driven you, declares

  111. the Lord. And I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

  112. Amazing. Decades before, Jeremiah 3, God's world were new and settled in this period of exile.

  113. And here is the Lord reading these promises from God's word, knowing that the time is near,

  114. and he responds by praying. Which is something Daniel does a lot of in this book, doesn't

  115. he? He's always praying. He's praying when he needs wisdom. He's praying when he's in

  116. trouble. He's praying regularly three times a day he prays. But why does he pray a prayer

  117. of confession here? Why not a prayer of adoration? God, you're going to do it. It's here. Why

  118. not a prayer of thanksgiving? Yes, the end has finally come. No, it's a prayer of confession.

  119. Daniel prays that way because ultimately it wasn't Babylon that put Israel in that God.

  120. It was God. This is how the whole book of Daniel begins, you remember, because Israel broke

  121. God's gracious covenant again and again. Chapter 1, verse 2, the Lord gave them into Nebuchadnezzar,

  122. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. As we'll see in a minute, the law of Moses warned the

  123. people that if they broke faith with God, he would drive them into exile, hand them over

  124. to their enemies. You can look up Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28. There God warns Israel

  125. the curses that would fall on them if they preached the covenant. But God also promised, again

  126. in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 30 and in 1 Kings 8 when Solomon dedicates the first

  127. temple. And from the text of Jeremiah we just read, God promises that in exile the people

  128. would turn to him in confession and repentance and he would forgive their sins and bring them

  129. home. And so here is Daniel living in the middle of this unique moment in redemptive history

  130. on the cusp of God bringing his people home from captivity. But even though Daniel's situation

  131. is unique, you know, his prayer is still instructive for us. It's still here to teach us. So what

  132. then does a genuine prayer of confession look like? I think we see three parts here in verses

  133. 3 through 19. Let's look at them each briefly. First, a genuine prayer of confession looks

  134. like acknowledging the truth about God and about us. This is verses 4 through 10. Look at how

  135. Daniel speaks of God here. Great and awesome. Verse 4, if you haven't King James, great and

  136. terrible. He keeps covenant and steadfast love. Verse 4, to him belongs righteousness. Verse 7,

  137. 14, 16. To him also belongs mercy and forgiveness, verse 8 and 19. And for the first time in the

  138. whole book of Daniel, which is really surprising, for the first time in the whole book of Daniel,

  139. in this chapter alone, God is called upon, is spoken of by his covenant name. By the name that he

  140. revealed to Moses and the burning bush out of the Lord. Capital L, R-D in our English translations.

  141. I am who I am. Verse 4, 8, 10, 13, 13. You see, it all begins with a right view of God.

  142. The God of the Bible, the one true God, friends, is no doting or an apparent. The God who created

  143. us is no cosmic therapist that we pay to ask us questions and merely affirm us. No, this

  144. God, the true God, is the consuming fire. The perfection of righteousness. The perfection

  145. of mercy. Calvin in the opening of the Institute says that so often the reason we think that

  146. we aren't sinful in need of grace is because we spend so much time merely comparing ourselves

  147. to other people. If we spend all our time only contemplating earthly things, if we only look

  148. for theملider and truly accept aged 12 years later. And then we would like to see the

  149. examine our body, when we can see how state that it looks at us. But when we get a glimpse

  150. of the white, hot blaze of the sun, when we lift our gaze to see the radiance of holiness

  151. and righteousness that is God, then our condition is seen for what it is. Suddenly what once appeared

  152. it is.

  153. Suddenly, what once

  154. appeared bright

  155. is seen murky

  156. and in the of the insane.

  157. Look then at how Daniel speaks

  158. of us.

  159. We have sinned,

  160. verse 5, 8, 11, 15, 16.

  161. That is, we've fallen short in God's purposes

  162. for us. We've done wrong,

  163. verse 5. We've acted wickedly,

  164. verse 5 and 15.

  165. We've rebelled, verses 5

  166. and 9. We've turned

  167. aside, we've gone astray for God's

  168. commandments and rules. We've not

  169. listened to the prophets and obeyed God's

  170. voice, verse 6, 10, 11, 14.

  171. We're guilty of treachery, verse 7.

  172. Transgression, verse 11.

  173. Iniquity, verse 13 and

  174. 16.

  175. To us belongs open

  176. shame, verses 6 and

  177. 9.

  178. It's quite a picture of that.

  179. A heart one to swallow, perhaps.

  180. Pretty bleak.

  181. But you know, the reason why

  182. the picture is so grim

  183. is because of what God

  184. originally created

  185. us to be.

  186. You see, God

  187. created

  188. every human being

  189. in His own image,

  190. worthy of dignity

  191. and honor

  192. and value.

  193. And that's true of each

  194. one of us,

  195. regardless of race

  196. or gender

  197. or class

  198. or age

  199. or ability.

  200. Humans are the high point

  201. of God's creation

  202. in Genesis 1.

  203. The crowning moment

  204. of God's creation

  205. in the earth.

  206. And that is why

  207. our fallen condition

  208. is so wretched.

  209. We are full of dignity,

  210. God's blown image

  211. bearers,

  212. and yet we rebel

  213. against God.

  214. We ignore God

  215. and the world He has made.

  216. And as a result,

  217. we ruin

  218. our relationships

  219. to one another,

  220. the world,

  221. and even to ourselves.

  222. Friends, look.

  223. Look at the wreckage

  224. we've made

  225. of God's

  226. good world.

  227. Blaise Pascal once said,

  228. in brutal

  229. but honest words,

  230. humans are the glory

  231. and the garbage

  232. of the universe.

  233. And note that Daniel

  234. includes himself

  235. in this picture,

  236. doesn't he?

  237. We have sinned,

  238. he says.

  239. Now think about it.

  240. Daniel is one of the few

  241. figures in the Old Testament

  242. of whom some massive failure

  243. is not reported.

  244. Count all through your mind

  245. most of the main figures.

  246. Abraham,

  247. oops,

  248. there's that whole deal

  249. with Satan,

  250. with Agar,

  251. Jacob,

  252. he didn't really come off

  253. so clean,

  254. did he?

  255. David,

  256. and on and on and on and on.

  257. And yet,

  258. Daniel,

  259. man,

  260. he seems to be

  261. a pretty good guy.

  262. But as we see

  263. in verse 20,

  264. Daniel knows himself

  265. to be guilty as well.

  266. He cannot exclude himself

  267. from this condition.

  268. And he makes

  269. no intent

  270. to excuses.

  271. And that brings us

  272. to the second part

  273. of this prayer,

  274. verses 4 through 10.

  275. Verses 4 through 10

  276. show us that

  277. a genuine confession,

  278. a genuine prayer

  279. of confession

  280. acknowledges

  281. the truth about God

  282. and ourselves.

  283. But then in verses

  284. 11 through 14,

  285. the next section,

  286. the genuine prayer

  287. of confession

  288. leads us to confess

  289. the rightness

  290. of God's judgment.

  291. Throughout this section,

  292. 11 through 14,

  293. Daniel affirms

  294. that God

  295. was not arbitrary

  296. or capricious

  297. in sending

  298. the people in exile.

  299. God had clearly

  300. warned them

  301. of the law of Moses.

  302. He had sent

  303. the prophets

  304. of them again

  305. and again

  306. to remind

  307. and plead

  308. and warn

  309. the people

  310. of what the law

  311. said.

  312. Generation

  313. after generation,

  314. God was patient

  315. and forbearing

  316. and loving.

  317. And so when judgment

  318. finally came,

  319. Daniel could say

  320. in verse 14,

  321. the Lord our God

  322. is righteous

  323. in all the works

  324. he has done.

  325. Now it's one thing

  326. to admit that God

  327. is holy

  328. and we are sinful.

  329. It's another thing

  330. to admit that God

  331. is just

  332. to judge our sin.

  333. And yet friends,

  334. this is what

  335. real confession

  336. looks like.

  337. It makes no excuses.

  338. It doesn't try

  339. to justify

  340. or minimize

  341. what we've done.

  342. How often

  343. have you heard

  344. of an apology

  345. like that?

  346. I'm sorry

  347. if I hurt you.

  348. I'm sorry

  349. if you do

  350. offense at that.

  351. I'm sorry

  352. that this bad

  353. thing happened.

  354. And yet none

  355. of that

  356. is saying

  357. I was wrong.

  358. A genuine

  359. prayer for confession

  360. puts the reality

  361. full in the face.

  362. You know,

  363. too often

  364. we see sin

  365. as a collection

  366. of missteps

  367. or mistakes.

  368. And deep down

  369. we think

  370. we're basically

  371. good.

  372. Deep down

  373. we're good

  374. in these faults

  375. or flaws

  376. that word

  377. of anger,

  378. that look

  379. of lust,

  380. that spike

  381. of jealousy.

  382. Well,

  383. that's just

  384. me having

  385. a bad day.

  386. I was feeling

  387. under some pressure.

  388. I skipped

  389. breakfast.

  390. But you know,

  391. friends,

  392. the truth

  393. is

  394. that anger,

  395. that lust,

  396. that jealousy,

  397. they're not

  398. some mere mistake

  399. of your true character.

  400. They're actually

  401. a symptom

  402. of a deep

  403. heart condition.

  404. Now they overflow

  405. of the heart

  406. and the mouth

  407. speaks.

  408. All these things

  409. are a symptom

  410. that our hearts

  411. rebelled against God.

  412. And God

  413. is completely

  414. within his rights

  415. to end our

  416. rebellion.

  417. But that's not

  418. where the prayer

  419. ends.

  420. Third,

  421. verses 15

  422. through 19,

  423. a genuine

  424. prayer of confession

  425. leads us

  426. to appeal

  427. for mercy.

  428. And notice

  429. on what grounds

  430. Daniel appeals

  431. for forgiveness.

  432. Look at the end

  433. of verse 18.

  434. We do not present

  435. our pleas

  436. before you

  437. because of

  438. our righteousness

  439. but because of

  440. your great

  441. mercy.

  442. Friends,

  443. why do we go

  444. to God

  445. in confession?

  446. Is the act

  447. of confession

  448. itself

  449. some sort

  450. of righteous

  451. act that God

  452. will reward

  453. with forgiveness?

  454. I've screwed

  455. up all this

  456. other stuff

  457. but at least

  458. I can do

  459. this one

  460. thing.

  461. I can do

  462. this act

  463. of forgiveness

  464. and then

  465. God will

  466. reward me

  467. on the basis

  468. of that act

  469. and then

  470. he'll

  471. forgive me.

  472. No!

  473. Not even

  474. our act

  475. of confession

  476. is something

  477. that God

  478. rewards.

  479. Rather,

  480. and so much

  481. more freeingly,

  482. we go to

  483. God in confession

  484. because we

  485. know that

  486. God is

  487. great

  488. in mercy.

  489. that we

  490. can't

  491. and we

  492. don't

  493. need

  494. to bring

  495. our

  496. unrighteousness

  497. because God

  498. is great

  499. in mercy.

  500. This is what

  501. we've been

  502. studying in the

  503. evening service

  504. in the book

  505. of Ephesians

  506. for the last

  507. couple of

  508. weeks.

  509. In chapter 2,

  510. John has been

  511. preaching about

  512. these opening

  513. verses where

  514. the apostle

  515. Paul says

  516. that we're

  517. spiritually dead

  518. because of

  519. our sins,

  520. but God,

  521. he says,

  522. being rich

  523. in mercy

  524. because of

  525. the great

  526. love with

  527. which he

  528. loved us,

  529. even when

  530. we were

  531. dead in

  532. our trespasses,

  533. made us

  534. alive together

  535. with Christ.

  536. By grace

  537. we have been

  538. saved.

  539. Because of

  540. God's

  541. great

  542. mercy.

  543. And you

  544. see,

  545. friends,

  546. this is what

  547. separates

  548. biblical faith

  549. from pretty

  550. much everything

  551. else.

  552. Because when

  553. you see it,

  554. when you pray

  555. a genuine

  556. prayer of

  557. confession,

  558. you realize

  559. that the

  560. answer to

  561. our problem

  562. isn't found

  563. in our

  564. own

  565. righteousness.

  566. It's not

  567. in our

  568. own

  569. resources,

  570. our own

  571. intentions,

  572. our own

  573. efforts,

  574. our own

  575. resolutions,

  576. not even

  577. in our

  578. own

  579. confession

  580. and

  581. repentance,

  582. but

  583. wonderfully

  584. and amazingly

  585. our answer

  586. comes solely

  587. and totally

  588. and sufficiently

  589. abundantly

  590. from God's

  591. own

  592. great

  593. mercy.

  594. And this

  595. makes genuine

  596. biblical

  597. prayers of

  598. confession,

  599. the prayers

  600. of confession

  601. very different

  602. from all

  603. else too.

  604. Why?

  605. Because even

  606. though the

  607. biblical picture

  608. of our sin

  609. and guilt

  610. are dire

  611. indeed,

  612. and that

  613. makes us

  614. very humble

  615. and very

  616. contrived,

  617. yet we can

  618. also approach

  619. God with

  620. an unheard

  621. of assurance

  622. and confidence

  623. that He will

  624. accept us

  625. and forgive

  626. us

  627. because He

  628. is great

  629. in mercy.

  630. Daniel was

  631. very confident

  632. in God's

  633. mercy in

  634. verse 15,

  635. if you look

  636. at that

  637. verse,

  638. because this

  639. was His

  640. name God

  641. who had

  642. delivered His

  643. people once

  644. already.

  645. This is a

  646. God who had

  647. shown His

  648. steadfast love.

  649. When the

  650. people were

  651. in captivity

  652. in Egypt,

  653. God rescued

  654. them in

  655. the Exodus.

  656. For the

  657. sake of His

  658. great name,

  659. that is to

  660. make known

  661. to all the

  662. world how

  663. great and

  664. awesome He

  665. is.

  666. God's already

  667. done this,

  668. He's already

  669. extended to us

  670. His steadfast love.

  671. And so now

  672. Daniel can call

  673. upon God

  674. knowing that

  675. God has done

  676. it already,

  677. delay not.

  678. For your own

  679. sake, O my

  680. God, for your

  681. city and your

  682. people are called

  683. by your name.

  684. In other

  685. words, let

  686. everyone know

  687. that you're not

  688. like these other

  689. gods.

  690. Let everyone

  691. see how great

  692. glorious you

  693. are.

  694. Let everyone

  695. see how

  696. merciful and

  697. faithful you

  698. are.

  699. Act,

  700. God, for

  701. the glory of

  702. your great

  703. name.

  704. Hear,

  705. forgive,

  706. act.

  707. And friends,

  708. if Daniel

  709. can pray for

  710. mercy with

  711. such urgency

  712. and with

  713. such confidence,

  714. how much

  715. more can we

  716. today?

  717. Daniel looked

  718. back to the

  719. Exodus.

  720. But as

  721. John mentioned

  722. earlier in

  723. her service,

  724. we look back

  725. to the cross.

  726. In the

  727. Exodus, you

  728. remember when

  729. the final plague

  730. came upon

  731. Egypt, when

  732. every firstborn

  733. was going to

  734. die.

  735. The people of

  736. Israel were

  737. told to

  738. sacrifice a

  739. lamb.

  740. And when

  741. God's judgment

  742. came, that

  743. lamb would

  744. serve as a

  745. substitute, the

  746. place of the

  747. firstborn, and

  748. the plague would

  749. pass them

  750. over, and

  751. they would

  752. be saved.

  753. Friends, in

  754. the same way

  755. when Jesus

  756. died on the

  757. cross, he

  758. died as our

  759. substitute, as

  760. the true

  761. lamb of God

  762. for our

  763. sins, so

  764. that we

  765. might be

  766. safe when

  767. God's

  768. judgment

  769. passes by.

  770. That the

  771. blood of the

  772. lamb has

  773. been spilled

  774. for us.

  775. That the

  776. judgment has

  777. been poured

  778. away.

  779. And now

  780. we can

  781. be right,

  782. and can

  783. be safe,

  784. and can

  785. be accepted.

  786. And so

  787. our

  788. goal for

  789. mercy can

  790. be made

  791. with even

  792. greater

  793. confidence

  794. and pain.

  795. Because we've

  796. seen the

  797. fullness of

  798. God's great

  799. mercy on the

  800. cross, where

  801. the love of

  802. God was

  803. expressed

  804. fully when the

  805. Son of God

  806. died for us.

  807. And not just

  808. that, but being

  809. raised from the

  810. dead on the

  811. third day, Jesus

  812. now lives to

  813. intercede for

  814. us.

  815. Who could

  816. possibly condemn

  817. us?

  818. Paul writes

  819. in Romans 8,

  820. 34, Christ

  821. Jesus is the

  822. one who died,

  823. more than that,

  824. who was raised,

  825. who is at the

  826. right hand of

  827. God, who is

  828. indeed interceding

  829. for us.

  830. Before you

  831. even pray a

  832. prayer of

  833. confession, the

  834. Almighty Savior

  835. has been praying

  836. for you.

  837. So friends, as we

  838. wrap up this

  839. first point, the

  840. prayer we're going

  841. to pray, let me

  842. ask.

  843. Are you

  844. regularly praying

  845. this sort of

  846. prayer to God?

  847. Is this part of

  848. your regular

  849. communion with

  850. God, this sort

  851. of prayer?

  852. Are you taking

  853. your sins and

  854. failures to God,

  855. admitting that

  856. they deserve just

  857. judgment, and

  858. then pleading and

  859. resting in God's

  860. great mercy, that

  861. they have been

  862. forgiven for his

  863. name's sake because

  864. of the crisis of

  865. God?

  866. We're not

  867. talking about

  868. groveling in

  869. guilt, you see.

  870. We're talking

  871. about dealing

  872. with guilt.

  873. Actually dealing

  874. with it.

  875. We're talking

  876. about experiencing

  877. the reconciling

  878. power of the

  879. cross of Christ on

  880. a daily basis, and

  881. feeling the burden

  882. lift, and knowing

  883. our conscience is

  884. clean.

  885. God.

  886. Friends, if this is

  887. not characterized

  888. with regular

  889. communion with

  890. God, start

  891. now.

  892. God.

  893. God.

  894. And do you make

  895. this prayer not

  896. just for yourself, but

  897. for the church

  898. in the whole?

  899. Daniel prayed for

  900. God's old covenant

  901. people.

  902. We too should pray

  903. for God's new

  904. covenant people, the

  905. church.

  906. There are many

  907. sins that we must

  908. corporately confess,

  909. you know.

  910. We can make a long

  911. list of them this

  912. morning, I'm sure.

  913. Pride, self-righteousness,

  914. racism, sexism, a

  915. coldness to the

  916. mission of God,

  917. lethargy, on and

  918. on and off you can

  919. list them out.

  920. Friends, do you

  921. join your voice with

  922. the whole church and

  923. pray for God's mercy

  924. upon us as people, as

  925. a body?

  926. Or do you excuse

  927. yourself?

  928. And think yourself

  929. better than your

  930. brothers and sisters

  931. in Christ.

  932. Well, I'm not like

  933. that.

  934. I'm a little more

  935. than Daniel,

  936. sock of the

  937. spectrum.

  938. Friends, a prayer

  939. for confession is a

  940. great gift.

  941. In fact, it's one of

  942. the marks of genuine

  943. vital Christianity.

  944. One writer put it

  945. this way, what

  946. distinguishes us

  947. from the world is

  948. not that we are

  949. less wicked.

  950. What distinguishes

  951. us from the world is

  952. not that we are

  953. less wicked.

  954. but that by the

  955. grace of God we

  956. have learned to see

  957. our wickedness for

  958. what it is and that

  959. we confess our sins.

  960. The church is the

  961. only body on earth

  962. that confesses sins.

  963. Where the confession

  964. of sin dies out, the

  965. church is no longer

  966. the church.

  967. church.

  968. This is one reason

  969. why Sunday after

  970. Sunday we have a

  971. prayer of confession.

  972. So that we can

  973. constantly come back

  974. to the very heart of

  975. the gospel that our

  976. sins are great.

  977. But the mercy of God

  978. in Christ is even

  979. greater.

  980. Well, let's move

  981. into our second and

  982. our last point.

  983. the answer we need

  984. to hear.

  985. Let's read the

  986. second half of the

  987. chapter, verses 20

  988. to 27.

  989. While I was speaking

  990. and praying, confessing

  991. my sin and the sin of

  992. my people Israel,

  993. presenting my plea

  994. before the Lord my

  995. God from the holy

  996. hill of my God, while

  997. I was speaking in

  998. prayer to thank

  999. Gabriel whom I had

  1000. seen in the vision

1001. of the first, came to

1002. me in swift flight at

  1003. the time of the

  1004. evening sacrifice.

  1005. He made me

  1006. understand speaking

  1007. with me and saying,

  1008. O Daniel, I have

1009. now come out to give

  1010. you insight and

  1011. understanding.

  1012. At the beginning of

  1013. your please or

  1014. mercy a word went

  1015. out and I have

  1016. come to tell it

  1017. to you for you

  1018. are greatly loved.

  1019. Therefore, consider

  1020. the word and

  1021. understand the

  1022. vision.

  1023. Seventy weeks are

  1024. to grieve about

  1025. your people and

  1026. your holy city to

  1027. finish the

  1028. transgression, to

  1029. put an end to

  1030. sin, to atone for

  1031. iniquity, to bring

  1032. an everlasting

  1033. righteousness, to

  1034. seal both vision

  1035. and prophet and to

  1036. anoint a most holy

  1037. place.

  1038. Know therefore and

  1039. understand that from

  1040. the going out of

  1041. the word to restore

  1042. and build Jerusalem

  1043. to the coming of

  1044. an anointed one

  1045. of prince, there

  1046. shall be seven

  1047. weeks.

  1048. Then for sixty-two

  1049. weeks it shall be

  1050. built again with

  1051. squares and

  1052. open in a

  1053. troubled time.

  1054. And after the

  1055. sixty-two weeks an

  1056. anointed one shall

  1057. be cut off and

  1058. shall have nothing.

  1059. And the people of

  1060. the prince who is

  1061. to come shall

  1062. destroy the city

  1063. and the sanctuary.

  1064. Its end shall

  1065. come with a flood

  1066. and to the end

  1067. there shall be war.

  1068. Desolations are

  1069. decreed.

  1070. And he shall make

  1071. a strong covenant

  1072. with many for one

  1073. week and for half

  1074. of the week he

  1075. shall put an end

  1076. to sacrifice and

  1077. offering.

  1078. And on the wing

  1079. of abomination

  1080. shall come one

  1081. who makes desolate

  1082. until the decreed end

  1083. is poured out

  1084. on the desolator.

  1085. So God sends Daniel

  1086. in answer to his

  1087. prayer through the

  1088. angel Gabriel.

  1089. And at first the

  1090. answer we need to

1091. hear is a word of

  1092. comfort.

  1093. Verses twenty

  1094. through twenty-three

  1095. Gabriel comes in

  1096. swift flight with a

  1097. word of mercy

  1098. telling Daniel you

  1099. are greatly loved.

  1100. And friends that is

  1101. a word of comfort

  1102. for everyone who

  1103. confesses their sins.

  1104. God is eager to

  1105. listen and respond

  1106. to his people's

  1107. prayers for mercy.

  1108. Isaiah 65 24 says

  1109. before they call I

  1110. will answer.

  1111. While they speak I

  1112. will hear.

  1113. Psalm 139 4

  1114. even before a word

  1115. is of my tongue

  1116. oh Lord you know

  1117. it all together.

  1118. Think of Jesus'

  1119. parables of Luke 18

  1120. that we read earlier.

  1121. If the unjust judge

  1122. grants a persistent

  1123. plea how much more

  1124. our heavenly father.

  1125. And when the two

1126. men go up to the

  1127. temple to pray it's

  1128. not the righteous

  1129. Pharisee but the

  1130. contrite tax collector

  1131. who confesses his

  1132. sins and Jesus says

  1133. wait then he goes

  1134. home justified.

  1135. Right.

  1136. He goes like.

  1137. So friends let these

  1138. words sink in.

  1139. These words to

  1140. Daniel.

  1141. Let them sink in

  1142. your own heart.

  1143. You are

  1144. greatly loved.

  1145. So it's a word

  1146. comfort.

  1147. But the answer

  1148. we need to hear

  1149. is also a word

  1150. great promise.

  1151. We see this in

  1152. verse 24.

  1153. Now.

  1154. Verses 24

  1155. through 27

  1156. are a notoriously

  1157. tough passage

  1158. to interpret.

  1159. Some of you

  1160. have just been

  1161. drumming your fingers

  1162. waiting for me

  1163. to talk about

  1164. verses 24

  1165. through 27

  1166. and now you're

  1167. thinking oh my

  1168. gosh this

  1169. sword's gotta end

  1170. soon.

  1171. What is he doing?

  1172. Okay.

  1173. These verses are

  1174. very tough to

  1175. interpret.

  1176. This is one of

  1177. those passages

  1178. where scholars

  1179. love to pontificate

  1180. how challenging

  1181. they are.

  1182. But the reality

  1183. is lots of good

  1184. careful faithful scholars

  1185. have read these

  1186. verses in a variety

  1187. of different ways

  1188. so we want to

  1189. be generous

  1190. and we certainly

  1191. don't want to

  1192. be overly

  1193. dogmatic here.

  1194. If someone comes

  1195. to me and says

  1196. I know exactly

  1197. what the end of

  1198. Daniel 9 means

  1199. you should be

  1200. suspicious.

  1201. And certainly

  1202. with the time we

  1203. have we won't be

  1204. able to go into

  1205. all the fine

  1206. details and

  1207. differences of

  1208. those readings

  1209. this morning.

  1210. If you're

  1211. interested in

  1212. doing that

  1213. grab a cup of

  1214. coffee and meet

  1215. me in the

  1216. fellowship hall

  1217. downstairs

  1218. after the service.

  1219. I'll hang out

  1220. down there and I'll

1221. be happy to dive into

  1222. all the eschatology

  1223. and apocalyptic

  1224. eschatology you

  1225. want to.

  1226. We can throw it

  1227. in.

  1228. That'd be fine.

  1229. I'd be happy to

  1230. do that.

  1231. That'd be fine.

  1232. Come do it.

  1233. But what I'm

  1234. going to try to

  1235. do with the time

  1236. that we have left

  1237. is I'm going to

  1238. just try to capture

  1239. the big idea here

  1240. because very often

  1241. we will lose the

  1242. force for the

  1243. trains.

  1244. And if you

  1245. understand this

  1246. passage differently

  1247. great.

  1248. You might be

  1249. right.

  1250. This is one of

  1251. those passages

  1252. where we're not

  1253. going to get too

  1254. uptight if we

  1255. put the pieces

  1256. together differently.

  1257. Well that

  1258. preface let me

  1259. say that verse

  1260. 24 is a word

  1261. of great promise.

  1262. Imagine yourself

  1263. in Daniel's shoes

  1264. for a moment.

  1265. He's just seen

  1266. the Babylonian

  1267. empire fall.

  1268. Jeremiah's

  1269. prophesied 70

  1270. years are almost

  1271. up.

  1272. His expectations

  1273. must be running

  1274. high right?

  1275. God is going to

  1276. fulfill his promises

  1277. soon.

  1278. We're going to go

  1279. home.

  1280. All that stuff that

  1281. the prophets

  1282. talked about is

  1283. going to be now.

  1284. It's happening.

  1285. But with verse

  1286. 24 God tells

  1287. Daniel that the

  1288. ultimate fulfillment

  1289. of his redemptive

  1290. plan isn't going

  1291. to happen at the

  1292. end of this 70

  1293. years with the

  1294. return from exile

  1295. but at the end

  1296. of 70 times

  1297. 7 years.

  1298. The margin of

  1299. the ESV helpfully

  1300. lets you know that

  1301. the phrase translated

  1302. 70 weeks could

  1303. also be translated

  1304. 70 seconds.

  1305. Now remember how

  1306. this part of the

  1307. book of David works.

  1308. Daniel is writing

  1309. in a style,

  1310. in a genre,

  1311. that we call

  1312. apocalyptic literature.

  1313. That is,

  1314. it's literature that's

  1315. heavy with symbolism

  1316. and figurative language.

  1317. Why?

  1318. What's the use of

  1319. that kind of literature?

  1320. Well not ultimately

  1321. so that PhD students

  1322. in late night prophecy

  1323. hour radio shows

  1324. can have endless

  1325. debates about exactly

  1326. who, what, when,

  1327. where, and why

  1328. all these little

  1329. details will sort of

  1330. take place.

  1331. No.

  1332. God employs this

  1333. kind of symbolic

  1334. figurative literature

  1335. because it helps us

  1336. feel the truth

  1337. of this stuff

  1338. rightly.

  1339. When we read about

  1340. the four beasts

  1341. in chapter 7

  1342. we're supposed to

  1343. feel a bit frightened.

  1344. And when we think

  1345. about a goat and a

  1346. ram in chapter 8

  1347. we're meant to feel

  1348. the swift power

  1349. and at the same

  1350. time the fragility

  1351. of these earth

  1352. lating notes.

  1353. And when we hear

  1354. 70 times

  1355. we're supposed to

  1356. feel something too.

  1357. But what?

1358. Well I think in order

  1359. to know what we're

  1360. supposed to feel

  1361. we're meant to hear,

  1362. we're meant to see

  1363. an echo

  1364. in this phrase

  1365. of an earlier passage

  1366. of scripture.

  1367. And that earlier passage

  1368. is Leviticus 25.

  1369. In Leviticus 25

  1370. God institutes

  1371. the year of Jubilee.

  1372. This is what

  1373. Leviticus 25 says.

1374. Let me know if this

  1375. sounds familiar.

  1376. You shall count

  1377. seven weeks of years.

  1378. Seven times seven years

  1379. until the time

  1380. of the seven weeks

1381. of years shall give you

  1382. 49 years.

  1383. Then you shall sound

  1384. the loud trumpet

  1385. on the day,

  1386. on the tenth day

  1387. of the seventh month.

1388. On the day of atonement

1389. you shall sound the trumpet

  1390. throughout all your land

  1391. and you shall proclaim

  1392. liberty throughout the land

  1393. to all its inhabitants.

1394. It shall be a jubilee

  1395. for you.

  1396. The jubilee year

  1397. was supposed to be

  1398. every seven times

  1399. seven years.

  1400. And on the day

  1401. of atonement

  1402. when God took care

  1403. of Israel's sin

1404. and the holy of always

  1405. they were to blow

  1406. a trumpet

  1407. and they were to

  1408. set everyone free.

  1409. And they were to

  1410. release everyone

  1411. from them.

  1412. And they were to

1413. give back all the land

  1414. of the original families

  1415. who had lost it.

1416. And they were to let

  1417. the whole land

  1418. rest from the earth.

  1419. You know,

  1420. I don't know if Israel

  1421. ever actually did that.

  1422. We don't know

  1423. from history.

  1424. It's unlikely they did.

  1425. Could you imagine

  1426. how radically

  1427. countercultural

  1428. that would be

  1429. economically,

  1430. sociopolitically

  1431. to institute

  1432. in the middle

  1433. of a regular

  1434. economic and political

  1435. life such a

  1436. wildly

  1437. generous

  1438. and gracious

  1439. act of liberation.

  1440. And friends,

  1441. if that's what

  1442. was supposed to happen,

  1443. if that's what

  1444. was supposed to

  1445. take place

  1446. every seven times

  1447. seven,

  1448. then what

  1449. will God do

  1450. when it's

  1451. seventy times

  1452. seven?

  1453. Not just

  1454. forty-nine years,

  1455. but four hundred

  1456. and ninety years.

  1457. Do we make it

  1458. tenfold

  1459. jubilee

  1460. or not?

  1461. You see,

  1462. Daniel's using

  1463. these numbers

  1464. symbolically

  1465. to speak

  1466. of something

  1467. great.

  1468. That's

  1469. God.

  1470. And the rest

  1471. of the verse

  1472. tells us

  1473. what God

  1474. will accomplish.

  1475. He'll finish

  1476. transgression.

  1477. He'll put an

  1478. end to sin

  1479. and atone

  1480. for iniquity.

  1481. Imagine that.

  1482. Sin done away

  1483. with once

  1484. and for all.

  1485. Every spiritual

  1486. burden that

  1487. weighs us down,

  1488. that attacks

  1489. our soul,

  1490. that steals

  1491. our true

  1492. happiness,

  1493. that wrecks

  1494. our relationship,

  1495. that damages

  1496. our world,

  1497. all of it

  1498. will be put

  1499. to an end.

  1500. And there

  1501. will be an

  1502. atonement made

  1503. so great,

  1504. so lasting,

  1505. that it never

  1506. needs to be

  1507. repeated.

  1508. Friends,

  1509. that would

  1510. be an

  1511. unruly.

  1512. That would

  1513. be a real

  1514. return from

  1515. exile.

  1516. That would

  1517. be jibily.

  1518. But it

  1519. doesn't stop

  1520. there.

  1521. God will

  1522. bring in

  1523. everlasting

  1524. righteousness.

  1525. He will

  1526. seal,

  1527. that is,

  1528. he will

  1529. authenticate,

  1530. he will

  1531. fulfill all

  1532. that the

  1533. prophets had

  1534. spoken about

  1535. and he

  1536. would anoint

  1537. the most

  1538. holy place.

  1539. Can you

  1540. imagine a

  1541. world where

  1542. everything is

  1543. right?

  1544. Where nothing

  1545. is as

  1546. it is

  1547. meant to

  1548. be.

  1549. Where perfect

  1550. justice rolls

  1551. down like

  1552. waters,

  1553. like an

  1554. ever-flowing

  1555. stream.

  1556. Where every

  1557. relationship

  1558. and the

  1559. order of the

  1560. whole creation

  1561. is fitting

  1562. and beautifully

  1563. just like

  1564. it's house.

  1565. When the

  1566. prophets had

  1567. visions of

  1568. that,

  1569. they would

  1570. sometimes speak

  1571. of the whole

  1572. creation bursting

  1573. out in song,

  1574. of hills and

  1575. trees resounding

  1576. with joy.

  1577. And if

  1578. Revelation 21

  1579. and 22

  1580. give us

  1581. any help

  1582. here,

  1583. then we

  1584. can understand

  1585. that the

  1586. ultimate

  1587. anointing

  1588. of a

  1589. most holy

  1590. place is

  1591. nothing less

  1592. than the

  1593. new heavens

  1594. and the

  1595. new earth.

  1596. Whereas

  1597. another

  1598. Old Testament

  1599. prophet,

  1600. Zachariah,

  1601. says everything

  1602. has become

  1603. whole to the

  1604. Lord,

  1605. because the

  1606. Lord is

  1607. there in

  1608. all of

  1609. his

  1610. fullness,

  1611. dwelling in

  1612. the midst

  1613. of his

  1614. people.

  1615. God's

  1616. God's

  1617. God's

  1618. telling

  1619. Daniel

  1620. and us

  1621. in verse

  1622. 24.

  1623. He's

  1624. telling us

  1625. that these

  1626. 70 years

  1627. of exile

  1628. and the

  1629. return to

  1630. Jerusalem

  1631. in 538

  1632. B.C.,

  1633. those are

  1634. really just

  1635. a foretaste

  1636. of something

  1637. even greater

  1638. to come.

  1639. That God's

  1640. redemptive plan

  1641. is unfolding

  1642. towards a

  1643. climax that

  1644. will make

  1645. the great

  1646. jubilee

  1647. years of

  1648. the Old

  1649. Testament

  1650. look like

  1651. a backyard

  1652. birthday party

  1653. in comparison.

  1654. Small

  1655. in comparison

  1656. to the

  1657. celebration

  1658. of liberty

  1659. that's on

  1660. its way.

  1661. But with

  1662. this word

  1663. of great

  1664. promise in

  1665. verse 24

  1666. comes a

  1667. word of

  1668. preparation

  1669. in verses

  1670. 25 and

  1671. 27.

  1672. The

  1673. 77s will

  1674. unfold in

  1675. three periods,

  1676. Daniel's

  1677. told.

  1678. And note

  1679. how each

  1680. period increases

  1681. in turmoil.

  1682. The first

  1683. period,

  1684. the 7

  1685. 7s,

  1686. verse 25,

  1687. the first

  1688. part of that

  1689. verse seems

  1690. quite calm.

  1691. The second

  1692. period,

  1693. the 62

  1694. 7s,

  1695. the second

  1696. half of

  1697. verse 25

  1698. is a

  1699. troubled

  1700. time,

  1701. God says.

  1702. And the

  1703. third period,

  1704. the last

  1705. 7,

  1706. verses 26

  1707. and 27,

  1708. is full

  1709. of all

  1710. out of

  1711. war and

  1712. desolation.

  1713. But then,

  1714. when it

  1715. seems like

  1716. the desolations

  1717. couldn't get

  1718. any worse,

  1719. God's

  1720. decree

  1721. is poured

  1722. out.

  1723. And evil

  1724. is judged

  1725. and put

  1726. away with

  1727. once and

  1728. for all.

  1729. Now,

  1730. a ton of

  1731. ink has

  1732. been spilled

  1733. trying to

  1734. determine and

  1735. figure out the

  1736. exact time frame

  1737. of these three

  1738. periods and

  1739. trying to

  1740. identify the

  1741. various figures.

  1742. And roughly

  1743. speaking,

  1744. there are three

  1745. big views.

  1746. Some would

  1747. see all the

  1748. details of

  1749. verses 25

  1750. through 27

  1751. as being

  1752. fulfilled in

  1753. the second

  1754. century B.C.

  1755. when the

  1756. Syrian ruler

  1757. Antiochus

  1758. Epiphanes

  1759. attacked

  1760. Jerusalem

  1761. and defiled

  1762. the temple.

  1763. Others would

  1764. see everything

  1765. as being

  1766. fulfilled in

  1767. the first

  1768. century A.D.

  1769. when Jesus

  1770. came as

  1771. the Messiah,

  1772. was crucified

  1773. and risen,

  1774. and the

  1775. Romans

  1776. destroyed

  1777. Jerusalem.

  1778. Others would

  1779. see a

  1780. fulfillment of

  1781. these verses

  1782. partially in

  1783. Jesus'

  1784. day,

  1785. but would

  1786. see verse

  1787. 27 especially

  1788. as referring to

  1789. events yet to

  1790. come,

  1791. just before

  1792. Christ returns.

  1793. And so we

  1794. ask,

  1795. well,

  1796. which is it?

  1797. Is this about

  1798. Antiochus?

  1799. Is this about

  1800. the Romans?

  1801. Is this about

  1802. the end times?

  1803. And I think

  1804. the answer,

  1805. friends,

  1806. is all three.

  1807. We know from

  1808. the context of

  1809. the book of

  1810. Daniel that the

  1811. Antiochus crisis

  1812. is at least

  1813. alluded to here.

  1814. There are

  1815. enough similarities

  1816. to chapter 8

  1817. that we looked

  1818. at last week

  1819. and chapter 11

  1820. that we'll look

  1821. at in a couple

  1822. weeks to see

  1823. a connection.

  1824. But at the

  1825. same time,

  1826. any of the

  1827. details don't

  1828. quite fit with

  1829. that.

  1830. Antiochus didn't

  1831. destroy the city

  1832. for one.

  1833. And his

  1834. downfall certainly

  1835. didn't put an

  1836. end to sin

  1837. once and for

  1838. all and bring

  1839. it out of

  1840. last righteousness.

  1841. Fact,

  1842. we know from

  1843. the New Testament,

  1844. is what Jesus

  1845. accomplished in

  1846. his personal

  1847. work.

  1848. So our

  1849. sites rightly

  1850. look through

  1851. this text beyond

  1852. the 2nd century

  1853. and on to the

  1854. 1st century AD

  1855. where Jesus is

  1856. the true

  1857. important one who

  1858. has come.

  1859. He really

  1860. does atone

  1861. for sin.

  1862. He really

  1863. does anoint

  1864. the true

  1865. holy places

  1866. in heaven

  1867. with the

  1868. sacrifice of

  1869. his own

  1870. self,

  1871. as the

  1872. letter to

  1873. the

  1874. Eucharist

  1875. tells us.

  1876. It's very

  1877. interesting,

  1878. Jesus himself

  1879. in Matthew

  1880. 25 and

  1881. 13 tells us

  1882. that the

  1883. so-called

  1884. abomination

  1885. that makes

  1886. desolate,

  1887. that you see

  1888. here in

  1889. 927.

  1890. We saw

  1891. back in

  1892. 13,

  1893. you see

  1894. in 1131,

  1895. Jesus says

  1896. that that will

  1897. find its

  1898. ultimate fulfillment

  1899. when the

  1900. Romans under

  1901. Tyrus destroy

  1902. the temple

  1903. in his own

  1904. day in

  1905. 17,

  1906. just after

  1907. his own

  1908. resurrection.

  1909. But still,

  1910. as we let

  1911. the cosmic

  1912. scoop of

  1913. the promises

  1914. of verse 24

  1915. sink into

  1916. us,

  1917. it seems to

  1918. push us even

  1919. further still

  1920. to the

  1921. consummation of

  1922. all things

  1923. and the

  1924. final conflict

  1925. with evil

  1926. that will

  1927. happen when

  1928. Christ returns

  1929. in the

  1930. second time.

  1931. So what we

  1932. have here in

  1933. Daniel 9 is

  1934. an example of

  1935. Old Testament

  1936. prophetic

  1937. literature having

  1938. multiple

  1939. horizons of

  1940. fulfillment.

  1941. Think of

  1942. Isaiah 40,

  1943. comfort my

  1944. people,

  1945. a voice crying

  1946. in the

  1947. wilderness.

  1948. We know

  1949. that was

  1950. about the

  1951. exile,

  1952. the return

  1953. from exile

  1954. on one

  1955. hand,

  1956. but also

  1957. it was

  1958. about

  1959. Jesus.

  1960. And the

  1961. New Testament

  1962. as Mark

  1963. tells us,

  1964. two things

  1965. at once,

  1966. it's the

  1967. same here in

  1968. Daniel 9.

  1969. Multiple

  1970. horizons.

  1971. There are

  1972. multiple

  1973. crises on

  1974. the horizon

  1975. for God's

  1976. people.

  1977. And so

  1978. God gives

  1979. Daniel and

  1980. us a

  1981. message of

  1982. preparation.

  1983. Preparation

  1984. as the

  1985. Apostle Paul

  1986. said in

  1987. the early

  1988. churches in

  1989. Acts 14,

  1990. 23,

  1991. that it's

  1992. for many

  1993. tribulations

  1994. that we

  1995. must enter

  1996. the kingdom

  1997. of God.

  1998. And as

  1999. Jesus taught

  2000. his disciples

  2001. after the

  2002. last supper

  2003. in John

  2004. 15,

  2005. 20,

  2006. remember

  2007. the

  2008. word that

  2009. I said

  2010. to you.

  2011. A servant

  2012. is not

  2013. greater than

  2014. his master.

  2015. If they

  2016. persecute me,

  2017. they will

  2018. also persecute

  2019. you.

  2020. Like the

  2021. New Testament

  2022. does over

  2023. and over

  2024. again,

  2025. Daniel 9

  2026. is giving

  2027. us the

  2028. right

  2029. expectations.

  2030. On the

  2031. one hand,

  2032. there is the

  2033. fullness of

  2034. forgiveness and

  2035. mercy.

  2036. Every prayer

  2037. of confession

  2038. is met

  2039. with a

  2040. speedy

  2041. word of

  2042. comfort.

  2043. And there

  2044. is a

  2045. great future

  2046. ahead for

  2047. the people

  2048. of God

  2049. in God's

  2050. world.

  2051. But on the

  2052. other hand,

  2053. becoming a

  2054. Christian,

  2055. knowing God's

  2056. mercy and

  2057. grace,

  2058. will not

  2059. automatically

  2060. result in

  2061. an easy

  2062. life.

  2063. All of

  2064. your troubles

  2065. and problems

  2066. will disappear.

  2067. Today, as

  2068. Matt mentioned,

  2069. is the

  2070. International Day

  2071. of Prayer

  2072. for the

  2073. Persecuted

  2074. Church.

  2075. Friends,

  2076. many of our

  2077. brothers and

  2078. sisters worldwide

  2079. are experiencing

  2080. some of this

  2081. deep,

  2082. unknown reality.

  2083. Hatred,

  2084. violence,

  2085. arrest,

  2086. imprisonment,

  2087. even death.

  2088. And like

  2089. the persistent

  2090. widow in

  2091. Luke 18,

  2092. friends,

  2093. may we lift

  2094. our voices

  2095. to God

  2096. and pray

  2097. for His

  2098. justice to

  2099. come speak

  2100. to me.

  2101. Because

  2102. Daniel 9 also

  2103. gives us one

  2104. more expectation

  2105. as well.

  2106. Not only will

  2107. there be

  2108. trouble,

  2109. but all

  2110. these times

  2111. are in

  2112. God's

  2113. hands.

  2114. Daniel's not

  2115. speaking chronologically

  2116. here,

  2117. but chronographically.

  2118. He's painting

  2119. a picture for

  2120. us with

  2121. numbers of

  2122. symbols.

  2123. The 70

  2124. times 7

  2125. is a way

  2126. of saying

  2127. that God

  2128. is in

  2129. control of

  2130. history.

  2131. He orders

  2132. the events

  2133. and days.

  2134. He has

  2135. appointed a

  2136. decree end

  2137. for all

  2138. suffering and

  2139. injustice and

  2140. violence and

  2141. oppression.

  2142. These things

  2143. will be cut

  2144. short in

  2145. God's perfect

  2146. heart.

  2147. And that

  2148. means we

  2149. can live

  2150. with courage,

  2151. with confidence.

  2152. God has

  2153. not only

  2154. forgiven our

  2155. sins in

  2156. personal,

  2157. but one

  2158. day he

  2159. promises to

  2160. bring an

  2161. everlasting

  2162. righteousness

  2163. and justice

  2164. to make

  2165. all things

  2166. better.

  2167. Let's pray.

  2168. God, we do

  2169. ask that you

  2170. would give

  2171. us the

  2172. humility and

  2173. the strength

  2174. for the

  2175. living of

  2176. these days.

  2177. Lord, we

  2178. thank you

  2179. for your

  2180. great mercy.

  2181. We thank

  2182. you for the

  2183. great comfort,

  2184. the great hope

  2185. that we have,

  2186. but we also

  2187. thank you that

  2188. no matter what

  2189. trials we face

  2190. in this life,

  2191. your victory

  2192. is secure.

  2193. We pray this

  2194. in Jesus' name.

  2195. Amen.
